Sims 4 Realm of Magic: How to Get to the Magic Realm

Image of Tom Hopkins

The new Sims 4 expansion pack is all about the wizarding world. There’s a new world to explore and spells to cast. So that you can explore everything the pack has to offer, here’s everything you need to know about how to get to the Magic Realm in Sims 4 Realm of Magic .

A big part of the new Sims 4 pack is the new world, Glimmerbrook. From here, you’re able to get to the world where all the magic happens.

Getting to the Magic Realm in Sims 4

The Magic Realm can be accessed from the new Glimmerbrook world. If you haven’t been before, it’s a basic, forest-y world that has space for five lots. However, its basic exterior is all smoke and mirrors as it hides a magical secret.

If you head to the area behind the Watch lot in the new town, you’ll spot a portal right at the edge of a waterfall. All you have to do to reach the Magic Realm is jump through it.

After a few seconds and all the flashing lights you’d expect from a portal, you’ll be in the world where all the magic happens.

Once you get there, you’ll need to actually become a spellcaster before you can do anything.

All you need to do is head over to one of the three sages: Simeon, who is the Sage of Practical Magic, L. Faba who is the Sage of Mischief Magic, or Morgyn who is the Sage of Untamed Magic, ask them to make you a spellcaster, and follow the tasks they set you.

Once all that’s done and you’ve become a spellcaster in Sims 4’s new pack, you’ll be given a Glimmerstone that sits in your inventory. This allows you to automatically transport over to the Magic Realm whenever you want.

That’s everything you need to know about how to get to the Magic Realm in Sims 4 Realm of Magic . For more tips and tricks on the game, be sure to search for Twinfinite .

While your Sim is out and about they may just stumble across something a little unusual. Are they brave enough to find out what is the other side?

The Sims 4 Realm of Magic: Welcome to Glimmerbrook & The Magic Realm!

Go on! Go see what is through the portal.

The Magic Realm

The portal grants your Sims access to The Magic Realm. It really is a world away from Glimmerbrook.

The Magic Realm is made up of several different floating islands. These islands have been subject to a vortex that has slowly been destroying the world. With the help of the three Sages, they worked together instead of against one another to help protect the world and keep the islands as together as possible.

The Sims 4 Realm of Magic: Welcome to Glimmerbrook & The Magic Realm!

When you first leave the Portal, your Sim will arrive at the HQ. This is the main hub for Spellcasters and you’ll usually find a variety of them hanging out here.

Your Sims can also find the three Sages at the HQ. They will be able to tell you more about magic and help you become a Spellcaster if your Sim isn’t already.

While you are at the HQ, you will notice that there are three other portals located on the island. These will allow you to travel to the other islands.

The Sims 4 Realm of Magic: Welcome to Glimmerbrook & The Magic Realm!

The HQ is a 40×40 lot that isn’t editable via Build Mode. However, you can enter the cheat bb.enablefreebuild which will allow you to refurbish and remodel the lot to your desire. You will not be able to change the lot type from Magic HQ.

The Gardens

The Sims 4 Realm of Magic: Welcome to Glimmerbrook & The Magic Realm!

The Gardens are located just to the South of the main island. Here you will find a conservatory that has definetly seen better days as well as a few collectible spawn points and a fishing spot.

Casters Alley

The Sims 4 Realm of Magic: Welcome to Glimmerbrook & The Magic Realm!

Casters Alley is located to the East of the main island and is the must-visit place for any Spellcaster. The shops have everything they ever need from ingredients, Tomes, brooms, wands and more!

Juan’s Wonderful One-Stop Wand Warehouse is where you will find a variety of Familiar’s, wands and Tomes.

The Sims 4 Realm of Magic: Welcome to Glimmerbrook & The Magic Realm!

Brooms, Baubles and Beyond is the place to go for all your Crystals and Brooms.

Questionable quacks emporium is where you will find a wide variety of potion ingredients..

There really is no other place you need to visit!

Dueling Grounds

Whether you want to Duel for artifacts, ingredients, knowledge or just for fun, the Dueling Grounds is the place to go while you are in The Magic Realm.

You will find the portal to the Dueling grounds located to the North of the main Island behind the HQ.

The Sims 4 Realm of Magic: Welcome to Glimmerbrook & The Magic Realm!

Much like Glimmerbrook, The Magic Realm also has some spectacular views and some beautiful locations that your Sims can explore and practice Magic.

The Magic Realm [ ]

When visiting the neighborhood, Sims are taken to the "Magic HQ" [1] , where the three spellcaster sages reside. Other spellcasters will visit this building as well.

Each NPC sage represents one of the schools of magic. They can tutor spellcasters in their respective school, and they all have the highest spellcaster rank, Virtuoso. They can also turn normal Sims into spellcasters through providing a quest. By default, the sages are Simeon Silversweater as the Sage of Practical Magic, L. Faba as the Sage of Mischief Magic, and Morgyn Ember as the Sage of Untamed Magic.

The "Magic HQ" consists of three above-ground floors (though only two are accessible) and two basement floors. The first floor foyer has doors to other areas in the building and stairs leading down to a small dueling area. Other rooms on the first floor include a kitchen, a bathroom, a study and a library. The second floor has three rooms with cauldrons, presumably one for each of the sages, as well as a meeting area. The basement includes another library, another bathroom, and a bar.

Neighborhood amenities [ ]

Casters alley [ ].

One of the floating islands in The Magic Realm is home to a marketplace for spellcasters, known as Casters Alley. There are three vendor stalls to purchase from: one for wands , spell tomes and familiars , one for magic brooms and crystals , and one for alchemy ingredients. Each stall is staffed by an "Astral Projection Vendor", who have the appearance of ghosts but are not actually ghosts. Casters Alley may be a spoof of Diagon Alley from Harry Potter .

Dueling grounds [ ]

The dueling grounds can be found on another floating island. Spellcasters can specifically challenge each other to a magic duel at the dueling grounds, rather than just at a nearby clearing.

Gardens [ ]

The third floating island is home to gardens and a destroyed greenhouse. Sims cannot enter the greenhouse, but the outside has plenty of plants and resources to harvest for potion brewing. Mandrake and Valerian plants naturally occur here.

  • The Magic Realm could be named and based on The Other Realm from the TV series Sabrina The Teenage Witch and the Netflix series Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina .

The Sims 4: Realm Of Magic Complete Guide

Fans of magic and Harry Potter should check out this expansion pack for The Sims 4 that allows Sims to learn spells and potions

The Sims 4: Realm of Magic is the eighth game pack of The Sims 4 franchise and takes players on a magical journey to a new realm of spells and sorcery. Released on September 10, 2019, it introduces a new magical world where players can become spellcasters and learn new spells and potions. Players can create their own magical Sims and explore the world of Glimmerbrook, complete with hidden secrets and magical creatures. With the ability to choose their own magical path, players can become either good or evil spellcasters and use their powers to help or harm others, or a bit of both. This pack offers a unique experience for players who are drawn to the fantasy and mystical elements of occult gameplay .

In Realm of Magic , players will experience a focus on magic and enchantment as they explore the new magical world. It builds on previous packs like The Sims 3: Supernatural , The Sims 2: Apartment Life , and The Sims: Makin' Magic , all of which featured magical elements. The game pack provides players with a unique way to live their Sims' lives as spellcasters, with various abilities and interactions that allow them to immerse themselves in a world of magic. Players can create their own magical Sims, complete with unique magical powers, familiars, and personalities. They can then learn new spells and potions, and even unlock a magical realm where they can gain access to new magical items and ingredients. Additionally, the pack includes new objects and clothing items that are perfect for creating a magical and mystical atmosphere. While game packs offer fewer features compared to expansion packs , Realm of Magic provides an engaging and immersive gameplay experience for players who enjoy the fantasy genre.

Spellcasters

The Sims 4: Realm of Magic game pack adds a new supernatural species to the game - Spellcasters, which share similarities with the witches from previous Sims games. This pack invites players to create their own magical Sim and immerse themselves in a world of spellcasting, potion brewing, dueling, and even summoning familiars.

Players can advance their spellcasting abilities and become masters of the magical arts by unlocking a variety of skills and abilities as they progress through a rank system, similar to vampires or werewolves. Unlike other occult species, Spellcasters do not have a secondary form. In addition, if players have installed the Paranormal Stuff pack, Spellcasters will gain the medium skill at a faster rate than regular Sims.

Becoming A Spellcaster

In Realm of Magic , there are several ways for Sims to become spellcasters . Players can create a spell caster directly in the CAS screen, granting access to occult customization options like pointed ears, eyes, and teeth for a unique appearance. Children can also become natural-born spellcasters if one of their parents is a spellcaster, with a 50% chance if one parent is a non-spell caster and a guaranteed chance if both parents are spellcasters. Children will not display their abilities until their teen years. Additionally, spellcasters can inherit one of three bloodline traits (weak, strong, ancient) based on their family line, with older bloodlines having an easier time mastering magic.

Related: The Sims 4: Realm of Magic - Ultimate Spellcaster Guide

To become a spellcaster, normal Sims can complete a quest from one of the three sages in the Magic Realm and perform the "Rite of Ascension" ritual. Alternatively, Virtuoso Spellcasters can learn the "Rite of Ascension" spell from the Sage of Practical Magic, which can instantly turn other Sims into spellcasters. Sims can stop being spellcasters by asking for the "Rite of Dissolution" from the sages, but they will lose their magic abilities. If they want to become a spellcaster again, they can regain their abilities, rank, and talent points.

Spells And Potions

Realm of Magic offers a vast array of spells and potions for Sims to explore and experiment with. With a total of 24 spells that can be learned, Sims can unlock various abilities like teleportation through Transportable, cleaning or repairing quickly with Scruberoo or Repairo respectively. Spellcasters have a unique meter called "Charge," which needs to be replenished to perform spells. In terms of visuals, it is similar to Werewolves' fury meter. This bar affects the power of spells, and when it's over 50%, magic is more potent but with the risk of overcharging and even death by spellcaster overload. Otherwise, they don't have different needs compared to the human Sims.

Spellcasters have three schools of magic: Practical, Mischief, and Untamed, and they can learn any spell by practicing within the respective school, reading tomes or asking a Sage to teach them. They are not limited to picking only one school of magic and every spellcaster can unlock each spell. The Spellcaster skill tree allows players to level up their powers and unlock new abilities, with some spells only becoming available once the spellcaster reaches a particular rank. Backfires are possible, depending on the spellcaster's ranking, and each school possesses an ultimate spell, which a spellcaster can only learn by reaching the Virtuoso rank and asking the respective Sage to teach them.

In addition to spells, there are 15 potions available in the Realm of Magic that can produce various magical effects, including need restoration and anti-aging. To avoid confusion, these potions are categorized under Alchemy in the Spellcaster book. Alchemy ingredients can be obtained through standard collection methods like gardening and fishing, but they can also be purchased at a market stall in The Magic Realm or won in magic duels. The Cats & Dogs expansion pack can also be useful for collecting items as pets can be bound as familiars and send for foraging. While some new spellcaster plants have been added, a majority of the required items are already available in the base game. Potions, like spells, can backfire and potentially curse the Sim. In summary, Realm of Magic may not offer new skills or significant gameplay features beyond spellcasters themselves, but their immense power and few drawbacks make them arguably the strongest occult. This is largely due to the addition of practical spells and potions.

Perks And Curses

As spellcasters progress through the ranks, they earn talent points that can be spent to unlock new perks, similar to the systems in Vampires and Werewolves. Unlike Vampires, however, there are no downsides or conflicting options in this system. Spellcasters can choose from a total of 24 perks, all of which are available as long as the player has the appropriate ranking. These perks significantly enhance spellcaster abilities, such as reducing the chance of backfire, providing curse immunity, and improving alchemy-related benefits.

Spellcasters are vulnerable to curses which can harm their needs or magic abilities. Curses are the only source of harm for these Sims and occur when a feat of magic, such as a spell or potion, fails. Spellcasters can have up to three curses at once out of a possible ten options, which appear in the spellcaster's needs panel. However, curses can be easily dispelled by using the Decursify spell or the Potion of Curse Cleansing. Strong spellcasters can remove curses quickly. Additionally, the Hexproof perk can prevent curses altogether, as long as the spellcaster has no existing curses.

In Realm of Magic , players have the option to acquire magical familiars which can assist in spell casting. Familiars can be obtained from the Magic Realm shop, by finding them in the magical realm or dueling for them. If the player owns the Cats & Dogs expansion pack, their pets can also be bound as familiars. Children of spellcasters can own a familiar, but they cannot use magic until they grow up.

Players can bind and name multiple familiars, but only one can be summoned at a time. Familiars are highly beneficial to Spellcasters, assisting them in magical interactions and encouraging them in their progress. They can also provide positive moodlets to the Spellcaster Sim and even prevent their death. While there are various familiar options, they do not differ in abilities, except for pet familiars which can gather collectibles for the Spellcaster Sims.

Glimmerbrook

Glimmerbrook is a charming and enchanting world, perfect for Sims who enjoy a whimsical and magical experience. The world is a picturesque forest, filled with towering trees, a sparkling creek, and magical flora. The architecture is inspired by rustic cabins and old-world charm, with a cozy feeling throughout. The neighborhood is relatively small, consisting of only four residential lots and one community lot. There is also a secret lot with a magical portal that leads Sims to the Magic Realm. Glimmerbrook is an ideal place for spellcaster Sims to live, as it is the primary location for magical gameplay in The Sims 4 .

Related: The Sims 4: All The Worlds In The Game, Ranked

Glimmerbrook introduces the Magic Realm, a unique lot that is inspired by Harry Potter franchise. It includes a magical school and a shopping area resembling Hogsmeade . Although it is not exclusive to spellcaster Sims, it is a great place for them to spend time as they can interact with other spellcasters and the three Sages, which allows Sims to learn new spells and potions much more quickly. In addition, Sims can purchase magical items such as wands, brooms, familiars, and potion materials.

Spellcraft & Sorcery Aspiration

The first of the two aspirations introduced in the Realm of Magic is the Spellcraft and Sorcery aspiration. Although there is some overlap between the two aspirations, as both require the spellcaster to reach the highest rank of Virtuoso, this aspiration focuses more on learning and practicing spells and participating in duels. It is relatively easy to complete since the Sim only needs to know 10 spells at the highest level of the task, and reaching a higher spellcaster rank is not too time-consuming if players focus on it.

Upon completing the Spellcraft and Sorcery aspiration, Sims receive the Slinger of Spells reward trait, which reduces the amount of charge that spells build up when casting, thus lowering the risk of overcharging and preventing the Sim from dying while practicing magic. It is a recommended aspiration to complete for any Spellcaster Sim.

Purveyor Of Potions Aspiration

The second aspiration introduced in the pack is the Purveyor of Potions, which centers on alchemy. In addition to advancing as spellcasters, Sims pursuing this aspiration must learn how to craft potions. While the task of brewing potions can be more challenging than casting spells because it necessitates Sims to possess certain ingredients, it is not excessively difficult, as many of these ingredients can be obtained from the overworld or purchased. Additionally, the potion-brewing task does not require Sims to craft numerous different potions, allowing them to brew a single, simple potion five times if they so choose.

Upon completing the Purveyor of Potions aspiration, Sims will be rewarded with the master mixer bonus trait, which decreases the chance of failure when Sim drinks a potion they have brewed. This trait can be especially beneficial for potions made with rare or difficult-to-obtain ingredients. The Purveyor of Potions aspiration is not as essential as the Spellcraft and Sorcery aspiration, unless players frequently rely on potions for their Spellcaster's personal use.

New CAS And Build/Buy Items

The Sims 4: Realm of Magic pack adds a variety of new CAS items that match the pack's magical and mystical theme. Players can now customize their Sims with a range of wizard-inspired clothing, hairstyles, and accessories that allow for endless outfit combinations. While surprisingly no pointy hats were added, there still are plenty of options for players to choose from. In addition to clothing, the pack also introduces new makeup options that allow players to give their Spellcaster Sims a unique magical look. Whether players prefer a classic witch or wizard style or a more modern twist, the Realm of Magic pack offers a range of options to suit any player's taste.

This pack also introduces over 80 new Build/Buy items that are perfect for Sims who love all things magical and mystical. This pack includes a cauldron that can be used to brew magical potions, as well as brooms that can be used for transportation. The pack also includes a range of wands that can be used by spellcasters to cast spells and perform magic. The pack also offers a range of whimsical and magical items that can be used to decorate any Sim's home. These items include stained-glass windows, doors, and magical-looking rugs that can give any home a touch of magical charm. Overall, the Realm of Magic pack provides a great way to add some magical flair to any Sim's home, regardless of whether they are a spellcaster or not.

The Sims 4 is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S

The Sims 4 Realm of Magic: Spellcasting Guide

Playing a "witch" and using spells in the sims 4.

A Spellcaster in The Sims 4 Realm of Magic

A Spellcaster takes a hit from a Sage as they duel in the Magic Realm's dueling area.

Players demanded a witchcraft or magic system for The Sims 4, and Maxis have delivered. The new Spellcaster system allows players to make their Sim into a new life state that can use magic. There are a few differences between Spellcasters and normal Sims, so let's outline them here and give you some information to get started playing them.

Becoming a Spellcaster

There are a total of three ways to become a spellcaster in The Sims 4 Realm of Magic. Let's start with the way that will probably be used by most people new to the pack, which is accessible to any existing Sim Teen or up: Ask one of the three Sages in the Magic Realm.

A Sim becomes a Spellcaster in The Sims 4 Realm of Magic

A Sim becomes a Spellcaster. A Sage has given her the power after a simple fetch quest.

Heading to the Magic Realm via the portal in Glimmerbrook, go into the main "Magic HQ" building. There, you can click a Sage and 'Ask How to Use Magic'. Sages have glowing symbols floating over their heads, so they're very easy to spot. They'll give you a quest - a super simple one to pick up glowing magical motes - and when you complete this quest, you'll officially be a spellcaster. Just head over to the Sage to turn them in. You might want to grab a few more while they're visible in case they turn out to be useful!

You can also make a Spellcaster via Create-a-Sim just like any other Occult. You'll start out at Apprentice rank just like a Sim who did the quest.

The finally way to become a caster is to be born one. It may be that you still need to do the quest via one of the Sages or ask your super powerful parents to endow you with magical ability. If you have a Sim born to spellcaster parents, you'll get the Magical Birthright trait. This ensures that you get more Spellcaster Perk Points on rank up and may have some other effects. Maxis have said that Magical Birthright actually grows in power the more generations of Spellcaster a Sim has in their ancestry.

Sims 4 Realm of Magic Features Review

A summary of the Maxis Realm of Magic Deep Dive, held just before the release of The Sims 4's latest game pack. Includes extensive info on spellcasters, curses, familiars, learning magic, alchemy... and on and on.

The Sims 4 Video

Spellcaster Charge - Not a Typical Mana System

The main difference between Spellcasters and regular Sims is found on the needs panel. There's a new Spellcaster Charge meter up top. Using magic increases charge, causing your Sim to be utilizing more energy when they cast. This growing energy devotes more power to spells they cast but comes with a price - increased failure rates. Each spell you cast adds to the charge, and the amounts may vary depending on the difficulty of the spell (speculation).

Aside from failure rates and increased spell potency, there's a second thing about Spellcasters and the charge meter - when it's full, your Sim is in danger of a new Death by Overcharge . This new death type results in a Ghost with a Trait that makes them immune to another death by overcharge. This may be useful in some cases, meaning the leash is off when a Spellcaster has left the realm of the living.

Spellcaster Charge depletes naturally over time, but you can take perks that help you to manage it. Additionally we know there's a Discharge spell that causes a Sim to release this built up energy. This may be useful if you're near full on charge and want to continue casting. However we don't know if there are any drawbacks to this yet.

Spellcaster Ranks

sims 4 how to travel to magic realm

Spellcasters can purchase a number of Perks, which impact magical ability, wizard duels and alchemy. You must gain more than one point on level up, else how could you buy a total of 24 with 4 ranks?

It looks like there are at least 6 Ranks to the Spellcaster system in Realm of Magic. The new system gives you perk points when you rank up, and experience is generated by doing magical witchy stuff like casting spells, dueling, creating or drinking potions.

It's possible to learn every perk if you are devoted enough, as you can overmax Spellcaster. There are 24 separate Perks you can buy with talent points. 15 of these are the type that require prerequisites, while 9 do not.

Familiars help your witch or wizard and protect them from death in The Sims 4 Realm of Magic

Two familiars are seen in this shot taken from the Realm of Magic Official Gameplay Trailer.

Familiars are little floating cutesies that follow your Sim around as a protective presence. They come as objects and disappear when you've bound them. While you can collect as many familiars as you want (and even have duplicates) you can only have one active at a time. I assume they are jealous of one another, the creeps.

While you have a familiar active, it is capable of preventing your wizard's death one time, though they need to recharge afterward. Just don't die twice in a row and you'll probably be OK. I guess because of how protective they are, having a familiar active gives your Sim a little positive moodlet.

Players who own Cats and Dogs can tag any of their .. dogs, or cats, as a familiar. They joked and indicated you could have the traditional black cat or a golden retriever. Go for a chihuahua if you want. Anyway, these forms of familiar are able to be sent after magical ingredients which will surely help your potion-crafting.. so go for the pet familiar if you want! We don't know how summoning them works just yet but hopefully you access them the same way once they're bound - via the Magic menu you get when you click your Sim.

Wands and Brooms

Central to playing a spell user, you'd want to have a wand, right? Well, Realm of Magic has both wands and brooms. Even though you don't really call these casters Witches, you do get to ride about like one. Brooms and Wands can both be favorited by your inventory, so you can tell your Sim to always use this or that wand or broom. Also, you're able to collect them and know that they only take up 1 slot in your Sim's inventory. Wands do not differ except in appearance, and their role is to really decide which casting animation your Sim will use. Brooms do have an actual function - transportation. Higher level casters are better at using them. You can set a broom to an always use broom for transportation mode, too!

Schools of Magic

There are 3 schools of magic in The Sims 4 Realm of Magic

There are three gurus, and three magical disciplines (other than Alchemy) in the Game Pack.

A sim learns a magic spell in The Sims 4 Realm of Magic

A Sim learning a spell in Realm of Magic.

In addition to spells, Sims can learn a total of 15 distinct potion recipes. Many of these are cures or have functions that already exist in game. For instance there is a potion that cures curses, and another that replenishes needs.

Alchemy requires use of a cauldron, purchasable by Sims at home. You can also find cauldrons at the Magic HQ - several of them. You'll need ingredients in order to make a potion, which takes a bit of time. Up to four Sims can work together to speed up the process, or you can take the Blender Arm Perk to improve crafting times.

You can give other Sims potions or drink them yourself, though be wary - potions can fail and will likely do some horrid things to your Sims, like turn them green or give them a curse.

Curses result from failed magical acts, including drinking potions, failing to cast a spell, or during the Alchemy process. There are a number of cursees, and a Sim can have up to three at one time. Unlike Get Famous' fame quirks or Vampire weaknesses, it's not required that your Sim have curses and they can be cured. You'll definitely want to seek a cure from a potion or spell, as curses do not wear off automatically and can be extremely annoying.

Just wondering, do you know if it is possible to become a sage?

Gravatar

I’ve read a couple places that it’s been confirmed that you can’t become a sage. Yet another missed opportunity for interesting gameplay

Gravatar

But it seems you CAN learn the spell that initiates a sim into being a spellcaster, so there's that.

So my sim learned Decursify, but I tried to cast it while she was charged, and it backfired. So now she has a second curse, and the new one makes it so she's always at like 10% Energy but can't go to sleep. Decursify has a long cooldown, but I don't know how long. I just know it's been at least 10 hours and I can't cast it yet.

Also, I wondered why the house I downloaded, that was made specifically for Glimmerbrook, had a bunch of pet stuff in it! Now my petite blonde witch has an enormous Newfie as a familiar.

Gravatar

Curses last until your sim removes them. Guide to Curse Types, Effects and how to Cure Them

Right, I know curses don't go away on their own. The spell to get rid of them has a long cooldown on it though. While it's on cooldown, it's grayed out and mousing over it tells you that it "takes a lot of energy, and you won't be able to cast it for a while." Curse of the Night Wraith prevented me from going to sleep, so I used my loooong night to experiment till I finally learned the potion.

Gravatar

I wonder if I could create potions and open an alchemy shop through the retail store panel? Perhaps? Thoughts?

You can pretty much sell anything through a retail store, just fill the shelves with your items, click on them and set them as being for sale. I've tried retail stores a couple times and found them to not be worth the aggravation though. You're doing good if you're 100 simoleans ahead at the end of the day, when you could just craft stuff and click the sell box for much more.

Currently potions are worthless but he QA devs have this marked as a bug so hopefully this will be fixed soon. But yes, once the devs fix the pricing it will be possible to make a potion shop.

Gravatar

How do you find out if another sim is a Spellcaster (besides probably seeing them in the Magic Realm)?

Well, it's a dead giveaway if you see them getting around on a broom, and I have seen it happen in public places. I haven't paid attention to see if it comes up on their thumbnail when you're talking to them, the way most other occult types do.

Gravatar

If you have get together, you can try forming a club with requirement spellcaster and see all who qualify.

Gravatar

I agree with everything you pointed out in this video with only one exception... I am a “Story maker”, but not a happy one. Too many details to explain why! All I can say is “All Sims Are Alike” In real life we are not!

Gravatar

Hey is that possible to be sages ? And how to learn the last spell of each type magic (untamed, practical, mischief) ?

No your played Sim can not be a Sage, learn the last spells by asking each type of Sage to teach you.

Gravatar

Can I make my Alien a spellcrafter?

Gravatar

I actually found out that when you bind a pet as a familiar, they stay in your family and roam around as normal! Also, if you do the testingcheats true and use the Cheat Need: Make Happy, it completely reduces your spellcaster charge to normal !

Gravatar

You know I've spent a lot of time Dueling in the Magic Realm from Phone calls and I just thought I'd offer my 2c, It appear that if you select a "normal" spell (e.g. Inferinate) while in the middle of a cast animation for a duel it at the very least significantly raises your chances of winning over (f.e.) waiting for the anim to finish.

Just be sure to cancel the queue'd spell after the duel unless you want to damage your relationship with the sim who's dueling you :P

Gravatar

Should sims be able to do magic outside of the magic realm? the menu doesn't pop up when my spellcaster sim is at home in Henford...

The Sims 4 Spellcasters guide on how to become a Spellcaster in the Realm of Magic expansion

How to explore Glimmerbrook and become a Spellcaster in the magic-focused expansion.

Looking for wizards and witch shenanigans? The Sims 4 Spellcasters are one of the major new additions to Realm of Magic, the late 2019 game pack that brought magic into the mundane in The Sims 4 .

Smaller than a full expansion but larger than a stuff pack, The Sims 4 game packs are new to this generation of the franchise, and each one introduces a single complete new mechanic to the game.

As you probably guessed, Realm of Magic introduces magic - a dark horse mechanic since the days of 2003's The Sims: Makin' Magic - to the fourth generation of Sims games.

It wouldn't be a supernatural Sims add-on without a new creature type, and Realm of Magic does not disappoint. If you want to practice magic in the world of The Sims 4, you'll need to transform yourself into what's now called a Spellcaster : a catch-all term covering aspects of several magical creature types from previous Sims games.

On this page:

  • What are Spellcasters and how do they work?
  • Where to find Glimmerbrook
  • Where to find the Sages and become a Spellcaster
  • How to turn a Spellcaster back into a human
  • Other ways to get Spellcasters

Looking for more The Sims 4 help? Read how to become a Werewolf in The Sims 4 as well as our The Sims 4 cheats page to help fast track you to various aspects of the game.

What are Spellcasters in The Sims 4 and how do they work?

Technically, Spellcasters are a completely separate life state from vanilla 'human' Sims, although the degree of humanity (or inhumanity) in your magical Sim's appearance is up to you.

The downside to this is that it means your Vampires , Mermaids , Aliens, Werewolves, and Ghosts will need to renounce their existing supernatural affiliation in order to become spellcasters, since The Sims 4 doesn't allow for hybrid creature types.

sims 4 how to travel to magic realm

Spellcasters primarily look and behave like witches and wizards from older games; there's also some overlap with the fairy life state introduced in The Sims 3: Supernatural.

Unlike most other creature types in The Sims 4, Spellcasters have no alternative form with which to conceal or reveal their supernatural nature.

However - like the titular characters from the Vampires game pack - Spellcasters have a huge branching skill tree, featuring a satisfyingly wide range of abilities to learn and powers to gain.

sims 4 how to travel to magic realm

Most importantly, though, Spellcasters can cook a twelve-person serving of macaroni and cheese in a giant bubbling cauldron, a talent well worth surrendering your humanity for even on its own.

There are four schools of magic available to your Sims - not to be confused with the four famous houses at a certain magical school, mind you.

The kind of Spellcaster your Sim will become is determined by what they choose to study:

  • Practical magic (which helps ease the burden of everyday tasks)
  • Mischief magic (which aims to cause discomfort and embarrassment to others)
  • Untamed magic (concerned with the acquisition of the most powerful spells)
  • And alchemy (a potions-based discipline more grounded in the physical world than the other schools)

Meanwhile, Realm of Magic introduces two new aspirations for your Sims: 'Spellcraft & Sorcery', which is a Knowledge aspiration; and 'Purveyor of Potions', which is a Nature aspiration.

sims 4 how to travel to magic realm

You don't need to have one of these aspirations to become a Spellcaster, but if you really want to dive into everything the new pack has to offer they're a good focal point, and there are helpful pointers contained in the goal text.

Like all aspirations in The Sims 4, they can either be selected during character creation or swapped out on an existing Sim at any time using the Simology panel.

sims 4 how to travel to magic realm

Unlike with many other creature types in The Sims games, becoming a Spellcaster in Realm of Magic is just the very beginning of your magical journey, not an end goal.

As such, the steps you need to take to get started are pretty simple, requiring only a little exploration. However, if you're keen to get right into the action - or if you're not playing with one of the new magic aspirations and so aren't receiving any in-game guidance - read on to learn where to go to become a Spellcaster and what to do once you get there.

Where to find Glimmerbrook in The Sims 4 Realm of Magic

Your journey into mystery begins with a trip to the new world of Glimmerbrook, the gateway to the titular Realm of Magic. Like most of the worlds added with previous game packs, Glimmerbrook is on the smaller side, and is made up of a single neighbourhood.

sims 4 how to travel to magic realm

Glimmerbrook is an attractive place in its own right, but the key feature of the town is the Mystical Portal: the one place in all the Sims' homelands where anyone can travel freely between the mundane and magical worlds.

Since you need to travel to the Realm of Magic in order to become a Spellcaster, you need to find the portal.

The Mystical Portal isn't a selectable location on the world map, although the map illustration features a pretty strong clue as to where you want to head. (Hint: it's just about the only detail on one-third of the map screen; look to the left-hand side.)

sims 4 how to travel to magic realm

The Mystical Portal can be found by the waterfall on the western edge of town. Since there's no lot nearby to fast travel to, the only way to reach it is on foot: fortunately, The Sims 4 allows you to explore its neighbourhood environs freely.

Head either to Glimmerbrook Watch (the empty lot) or Rock Ridge Canyon (home to the EA-created Charm family); the path to the waterfall and the Mystical Portal runs roughly between them. There's even a faint dirt track heading from the border of Glimmerbrook Watch directly towards the portal in case you get turned around.

sims 4 how to travel to magic realm

Once you find it, simply click on the portal and select 'Travel to The Magic Realm'. Your Sim will be given a pop-up prompt to either 'Enter the Portal' or 'Turn Back' - and since you've made it this far, I'm going to assume you want to choose the first one.

sims 4 how to travel to magic realm

Brave the swirling vortex and you'll emerge on the other side in a secret area not shown on the map. This is the Realm of Magic and, as a twenty-year veteran of the franchise, I can confirm it to be the coolest location I think I've ever seen in a Sims game - aesthetically it's a cross between the Void from Dishonored and a copyright-friendly Harry Potter homage. (Anyone up for a shopping trip to the legally distinct 'Casters Alley'?)

Where to find the Sages and become a Spellcaster in The Sims 4 Realm of Magic

The Realm of Magic is made up of a series of four islands seemingly free-floating in the void of extra-dimensional space. You can travel between them using portals like the one that brought you here from Glimmerbrook.

Luckily, though, if it's your first trip here and you just want to get on with becoming a Spellcaster, you're already on the right island: the portal from Glimmerbrook deposits you in the courtyard outside of the imposing mansion known as Magic HQ.

sims 4 how to travel to magic realm

Head inside and you'll find the three Sages: L. Faba, the Sage of Mischief Magic; Simeon Silversweater, the Sage of Practical Magic; and Morgyn Ember, the Sage of Untamed Magic.

Sages are the only ones who can bestow magical powers onto other Sims in a ritual known as the Rite of Ascension. To make these Sages easier to spot, they each have a brightly coloured rune floating above their heads, corresponding to the school of magic they represent.

sims 4 how to travel to magic realm

Introduce yourself to any of the three Sages. Once you're acquaintances, you can click on them and select the Friendly social interaction 'Ask How to Use Magic'. Another pop-up prompt will let you choose between starting the quest immediately or leaving it for later.

Accepting the quest starts a (very forgiving) timer, so it might be worth making sure that your Sim's needs - especially Energy - are high before you begin.

sims 4 how to travel to magic realm

Your mission, once you choose to accept it, is to collect seven Magical Motes and deliver them back to the Sages. In order to do this, you'll be granted a Focused moodlet called 'Mote Sight' that allows you to see and retrieve motes.

sims 4 how to travel to magic realm

Mote Sight is only active for eight in-game hours before it wears off. Fortunately, Magical Motes are abundant throughout the Realm of Magic, especially in the area around Magic HQ.

Appearing as purple-blue orbs with a swirling pink core, they can be found on almost every path on the main island, and are pretty hard to miss.

sims 4 how to travel to magic realm

Clicking on one will give you the option to collect it. Collected orbs will be stacked in your Sim's inventory, and once you have all seven you won't be able to pick up any more, so it's time to check back in with the Sages.

Select the 'Turn In Motes' Friendly social interaction on any Sage to complete the quest and automatically trigger the Rite of Ascension.

sims 4 how to travel to magic realm

NOTE: You don't need to hand your Magical Motes to the Sage who started the quest for you; any Sage will accept them, provided you've introduced yourself. It's also worth knowing that your magical school isn't determined by the alignment of the Sage(s) you interact with as part of the quest; instead, you get to choose your specialisation for yourself later on.

sims 4 how to travel to magic realm

One simple magical transformation later and your Sim is now a fully-fledged Apprentice Spellcaster, with a Spellbook and skill tree of their very own that can be accessed via the Needs tab on the Simology panel.

Your Spellcaster's needs panel looks quite different from a regular Sim's, and includes new features unique to spellcasters: the Charge metre, Rank metre, Talent Points tracker, and Perks Panel (which grants access to the Spellbook).

You'll also receive a Glimmerstone in your inventory, which allows you to fast travel to the Realm of Magic from anywhere in the game.

sims 4 how to travel to magic realm

Now you have everything you need to begin the real business of being a Spellcaster.

You can start learning spells and potions by asking the Sages for advice, or by reading the books generously provided around Magic HQ; or visit Casters Alley to buy yourself ingredients and a magic wand, a broomstick for easier travel, or even an adorable magical familiar!

How to turn a Spellcaster back into a human in The Sims 4

Of course, your Sim may not want to stay a Spellcaster forever. (Admittedly we can't conceive of why you wouldn't want that: being a Spellcaster is super cool and has basically no downsides... but I'm not here to judge!)

Here's how to undo the effects of your magical initiation. Travel to the Realm of Magic and find any Sage. Introduce yourself to them if you haven't already, then click on them and choose "Ask for Rite of Dissolution" from the Magic social category.

sims 4 how to travel to magic realm

The Sage will perform a slightly grim (but still pretty cool looking) spell that extracts your magical powers from you, and you'll get a pop-up informing you that your Sim is no longer a Spellcaster.

sims 4 how to travel to magic realm

You can still use the portals to travel to and from Glimmerbrook and around the Realm of Magic, and participate in any non-magical activities on offer there (including cooking at the mac and cheese cauldron, so don't worry!).

And of course you can always start the whole process again if you change your mind.

Our The Sims 4 cheats can help you fast travel your way to all sorts of bonuses in the game. Meanwhile, if you have expansions, we can help with becoming a werewolf , Fabrication in Eco Living , Tiny Living , how to become a Mermaid , how to become a Spellcaster , High School and attending prom and University Degrees and Distinguished Degrees . In June 2020, we also saw the free addition of ladders in The Sims 4 .

Other ways to get Spellcasters in The Sims 4

If you're looking to quick-start a game with a Spellcaster character, there are two methods of skipping the Rite of Ascension and getting your Sim their magical powers without needing to wait.

Create a Spellcaster using Create-A-Sim

Like most creature types in The Sims 4, Spellcasters can be made in Create-A-Sim when you start a new game or create a new household within an existing save.

Unless you take the Story Mode character creation quiz and get lucky with its randomly generated questions, your starting CAS Sim will be a regular human.

To start building your Spellcaster, click 'Add Character' in the lower left hand corner of the screen, and choose 'Add Occult Sim' from the pop-up menu. A second pop-up menu sprouts from the first one showing you the full range of occult life states your installed add-ons have to offer; click on 'Add Spellcaster'. A new character will be added to your family, complete with magical powers.

sims 4 how to travel to magic realm

(If you don't want a muggle in your household, you can mouse over the original randomised character's icon and click on the cross to delete them.)

Unlike most other creatures in The Sims 4, Spellcasters don't have a 'dark form' to hide their true nature from unenlightened human eyes; meaning that there's only one appearance you need to customise.

A Spellcaster can look just like a regular human Sim if you want them to, but you can add a hint of eeriness with an extensive range of new supernatural eye colours, or give full reign to your Spellcaster's eccentricity with some witchy/wizardly new cosmetic and clothing options. Good news if you've always known you were a Goth Hufflepuff on the inside.

sims 4 how to travel to magic realm

Sadly, there's nothing you can do to convert your existing favourite Sims into Spellcasters while in Create-A-Sim - short of painstakingly recreating them from scratch.

So if you want to import a character from your library or the Gallery and make them a Spellcaster, you have two options: making it happen in-game, using the Sages' quest method detailed above; or using cheats for instant gratification.

Using Spellcaster cheats in The Sims 4

Cheat codes: a kind of magic all on their own. If you're really keen to get right to the good part, you can use a cheat code to instantly turn your Sim into a Spellcaster.

NOTE: You might notice a slight change in terminology between regular gameplay and the cheats console in Realm of Magic. While magical Sims are officially referred to as 'Spellcasters', the cheats console only recognises the term 'Witch'.

Don't worry, though: using this cheat will get you the hidden 'Spellcaster' trait, and everything in-game will work the same.

To become a Spellcaster using cheats, follow the steps below:

  • Open the cheats console. (See our The Sims 4 cheats page for details on how to do this.) The console appears on the upper left hand of the screen
  • Type and enter testingcheats on or testingcheats true (either will work) to enable debugging cheat.
  • With your would-be-Spellcaster as your active character, enter the following cheat: Traits.Equip_Trait Trait_Occult_WitchOccult

sims 4 how to travel to magic realm

If you enter the cheat correctly, you'll notice that a silver bar (indicating that the active Sim is a supernatural creature) will instantly pop into existence, encircling their plumbob.

sims 4 how to travel to magic realm

You're now every bit as much a Spellcaster as those who undertook the Sages' quest, and can commence your magical career as normal.

You can also de-witchify (or should that be un-Spellcaster-ate..?) yourself using cheats, by following the instructions above and substituting 'Remove' for 'Equip' in the cheat code.

As ever, beware that debug cheats don't always play nicely with all aspects of your game, and there is a risk that using them will cause glitches or corruption - so always be sure to save your game first.

Now that you have a full toolkit of Spellcaster creation methods at your fingertips, the real magic is just beginning. So go forth, explore the new worlds, and cast spells to your heart's content!

How to Become a Witch in The Sims 4: Realm of Magic

Image of Serhii Patskan

The latest content update for The Sims 4 , titled Realm of Magic , is out now, and it introduces a brand-new set of spellcasting abilities for your characters. However, not everyone can become a witch in The Sims 4 , as this ability can only be acquired by teens , young adults , adults , and elders .

Also, the process of becoming a spellcaster may seem a bit daunting to new players. That’s why you can save your time by following a simple step-by-step guide on how to become a witch below.

Step 1: Speak to a Sage in Magic HQ

In order to get to Magic headquarters in The Sims 4, you need to travel through a portal located at the waterfall on the edge of the new Glimmerbrook town .

When you arrive at the Magic HQ, you need to find a sage. There are three of them in the headquarters:

  • Simeon Silversweater : Sage of Practical Magic
  • L. Faba : Sage of Mischief Magic
  • Morgyn Ember : Sage of Untamed Magic

It doesn’t matter who you speak to first, as all of them are capable of turning your character into a witch. When you find one of them, follow these steps:

  • Start a conversation
  • Introduce yourself
  • Click on “ Friendly Interactions “
  • Choose “ Ask How to Use Magic “
  • Click on “ I was born ready ” option in the next menu

Step 2: Collect Magical Orbs

As a result of your conversation with one of the sages, you will be given a task to collect seven magical orbs scattered around the Magic HQ.

Go outside and find all seven orbs; they are very easy to see since the sage will give you a special ability for that purpose.

Go back to the sage and give him the orbs. As a reward, your character will be turned into a witch.

The Sims 4: Realm of Magic Has Arrived

And we’ve got the perfect beginner’s guide.

On this day, Simmers and Sages gather together to perform the savoriest of Spells, concoct perfectly precious potions, and find formidable familiars in  The Sims™ 4: Realm of Magic* .

Spellcasters, unearth The Beginner’s Guide to the Realm of Magic, an ancient – albeit digital – time for aspiring Spellcasters navigating the world beyond the portal. Read on to find answers to many practical questions before your Sim tries their hand at practical magic.

Chapter 1: Making Magic Happen

Alright, young Spellcaster. Here are two ways to, you know, become a Spellcaster.

  • Start from Create A Sim: Select the option through the “Add A Sim” button and off you go!
  • Ask one of the three Sages in the Magic Realm to grant you the Right of Ascension. Sounds like a risk you’re willing to take, right? Here’s how to do it:
  • Travel to Glimmerbrook
  • Find the Magic Portal that will take you to the Magic Realm (eeeeek!)
  • Talk to one of the three Sages, who are designated by magic runes above their heads
  • Ask one of them how to use magic, and they’ll grant your Sim temporary Mote Sight
  • Walk around The Magic Realm and collect seven Motes a.k.a. Floating Purple Orbs
  • Once collected, return to any of the three Sages and Turn in the Motes – it’s like Spellcasting homework, but better!
  • The Sage will perform the Right of Ascension and your Sim will now be a Spellcaster

Chapter 2: Get in Spellcaster, We’re Going Shopping

Any good magic-maker needs items and supplies to level up their spells and potions. But, where do you find them? Casters Ally is  the  place for your Sims to purchase items that will assist them on their Spellcaster journey. There, you’ll find three shops, each with their own unique items that rotate each day. Let’s drink the Potion of the Nimble Mind and learn more about each shop, shall we?

  • Wands, Tomes, and Familiars: This shop offers your Sim unique wands each day for their Sim as well as Familiars that will help protect them from Death, as long as they are summoned. Players will also find Magical Tomes here, that can help start them off in building their Spellbook.
  • Brooms and Crystals: This shop offers your Sim unique brooms and crystals each day. Brooms can be used to get around the world in a timely fashion. The crystals will be a vital ingredient if your Sim wants to brew potions on the cauldron.
  • Potion Ingredient Shop: Having trouble finding a certain ingredient for a potion? Be sure to visit the potion shop. They sell everything, from death flowers to dragon fruit.

Chapter 3: Getting Familiar

Familiars are powerful entities that can protect your Sim from death and give them confidence. You can purchase a powerful dragon, wise owl, or elusive bunnerfly from Casters Ally. With the Familiar Orb in your Sim’s inventory, bind them to your Sim by clicking on the orb itself. Once bound, click on your Sim to summon them. Then name them whatever your magical heart desires!

Chapter 4: Well, Aren’t You Perky?

The more your Sim practices, the more Perks they’ll unlock. Read on to learn about different kinds of Perks. The best perks for leveling fast:

  • Experimenter: This lets your Sim build Spellcaster XP much faster.
  • Spellcaster Socialite: This will allow your Sim to discuss Magic with other Spellcasters. Each social awards your Sim with a bit of Spellcaster XP allowing you to level up quickly.
  • Mote Hound: This grants your Sim permanent Mote Sight, giving them the ability to collect Magical Motes in the world. Your Sim can now Absorb the motes for Spellcaster XP.

The best perks for heavy potion brewing:

  • Blender Arm: A great early perk, it makes potions brew much faster.
  • Incredible Forager: If you are an Alchemist, you are also probably playing the gardening game. This means you receive extra harvestables from your plants.
  • Potent Potables: The last perk in the Alchemy track, it allows you to Hex your potions so they always result in the failure outcome of the potion.

The best perks for heavy Spell use:

  • Discharge: The early perk for a Spellcaster who wants to use a lot of Spells, making it possible for your Sim to drain their Spellcaster Charge to avoid exploding from overcharge.
  • Charge Control: This allows your Sim to cast more spells before they might overcharge.
  • Magical Resonance: Help your Sim avoid Death by Overcharge completely. They will still explode, but will no longer run the risk of actually dying as long as they are in The Magic Realm.

  Chapter 5: Potion Commotion

What do these potions do, anyway?

  • Potion of Plentiful Needs: The potion maxes all the needs on any Sim who drinks it. Be careful not to consume too many potions at once, or you might get a curse!
  • Potion of Forced Friendship: Tired of grinding that Relationship Bar with Sims? This potion will be just the trick. The Sim that consumes this potion unlocks a new interaction called “Use the Power of Forced Friendship.” This will instantly max out a Friendly Relationship with any Sim.
  • Potion of Immortality: Whoever drinks this one will never die of old age.

Chapter 6: Do You Even Spell?

Here are some Spells to make your Sims’ lives just a little bit easier:

  • Copypasto – Copy any small object! Perfect for any potion crafter. Why harvest ingredients when you can just duplicate them?
  • Burgliate – Make mischief by swiping objects in the world. Combined with the Spectral Reach perk, your Sim will never be caught stealing again.
  • Duplicato – Sims can make a temporary copy of themselves and have them clean, cook, or even just socialize. Dev team, can we get this IRL?

And so ends the Beginner’s Guide to the Realm of Magic! We hope this “book” of spellbinding secrets helps your Sim on their quest to becoming the best Spellcaster in Glimmerbrook. The Sims 4: Realm of Magic is now available on PC, Mac, Xbox One, and PlayStation®4. Chat with fellow community members on The Sims 4  Forums , follow us on  Twitter  and  Instagram , like us on  Facebook , and subscribe to our  YouTube  channel.
