On my first visit to Kashmir: A ticket to heaven

If you are a professional and cannot spare more than 4-5 days for your trip, even then kashmir can be a perfect destination for you. here's why..

Most of us have grown up listening, ‘Kashmir is heaven on Earth.’ But how many of us have actually visited this heaven? Most of you would agree that Kashmir in our minds has been synonymous to terrorism and this image takes over the charm of the Valley, whenever one thinks of visiting Kashmir. I too had some apprehensions but after this trip, I’m glad they have been busted.

Born and brought up in Punjab, I always wanted to visit this heaven at least once. My visit to Kashmir came in the most unique way with just me and a friend- two girls leaving for Kashmir darshan. If you are a professional and cannot spare more than 4-5 days for your trip, even then Kashmir can be a perfect destination for you. Here’s why:

Srinagar city serves as the central point with major attractions like Pahalgam, Gulmarg, Yousmarg etc.

In Srinagar, gardens like Shalimar, Nishat and Chashme Shahi take you to the royal landscapes of Mughal era. However nothing can beat Shikara ride in Dal Lake.

This lake is the heart of Kashmir visit which will leave you mesmerised. A floating Post office – the only one in India – stands witness to the legacy of Dal Lake along with a floating market. From seeds of black roses to miniature wooden Shikara boats, you can buy some interesting Kashmir special stuff with a lot of bargaining. The grandeur of Dal Lake lies in majestic mountains opposite the lake also housing the Pari Mahal and Botanical Garden. Pari Mahal offers a grand view of Dal Lake from its top. For the shopaholics, Lal Chowk market is the perfect stop to roam around in the evenings. Book your date with Dal Lake for an evening as floating shikaras with sunset in backdrop will make you realise why Srinagar is indeed the heart of Kashmir.

Through the apple and apricot orchards and scenic lakes, Yousmarg is one of the most peaceful places to visit in Kashmir. On the way, apple laden trees will convince you to take multiple halts and peep into the orchards. A picturesque valley, Yousmarg is a place where you can sit quietly for hours under chinar and deodar trees. Hire a horse for not more than Rs 700-800 and visit Doodhganga- banks of a small river uphill with waters as white as milk. Pahalgam

This place can be your best memory in the entire Kashmir trip. The sound of crystal clear blue water touching the rocks and hills gleaming like gold will follow you throughout your road trip in Pahalgam. There is not a single point where waters stop following you. If that is not enough, visit Betaab Valley- where Sunny Deol starrer ‘Betaab’ was shot and you would feel like never coming back. Green waters of Betaab with snow-clad peaks of Amarnath shrine in the background is like a dream. With its separate taxi union, you have to hire taxi from Pahlagam taxi stand for visiting Betaab valley, Aru valley, Chandanwari etc. Lidder river banks are equally mesmerising.

35 kms from the holy cave of Amarnath, Chandanwari is known for its ice glacier which however has turned brown from white due to human settlements. One can visit Chandanwari and enjoy a cuppa and snacks at small cafes aside glacier but if you are on a short trip and time is gold, then Chandanwari can be skipped. Betaab valley is a must.

On the way to Chandanwari, among the multiple breathtaking views is the one where three water streams converge at a point. Also, the view of Betaab valley while on way to Chandanwari is to die for.

Valley of flowers – is what I will describe Gulmarg as. If you are visiting Gulmarg in non-snowing season, like me, blossoms in purple and white with misty hills and chinars in background will take your heart away. It is the only place where you can feel a little chilled so a light warmer, shawl or jacket will help. Gondala ride- world’s second highest cable car works in two phases. You can book your tickets in advance on government website instead of falling in net of guides there.

If an adventure buff, you will love the snow on phase 2 which however requires a lot of hard work to climb the slippery rocks and mini heart attacks. If not, you can enjoy ride till phase 1. On the downhill are the two must visit places- a small church in Gulmarg valley is where the opening shot of Yash Chopra’s ‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’ was shot. The church offers a 360 degree view of Gulmarg valley. Either hire a horse or take your vehicle through pucca route to reach the church. Also nearby is a small Rani Temple which the last Kashmir ruler Raja Hari Singh built in memory of his wife.

Food, dhabas and saffron

Being a Punjabi, you cannot live without desi food for long. Don’t worry because a hub of Punjabi dhabas like ‘Punjab Di Rasoi’, ‘Dilli Kitchen’, ‘Krishna Dhaba’ etc offer sumptuous Punjabi north Indian food near Dal Lake. While Kashmir special food is a paradise for non-veg lovers, if you are a veggie like me- the best deal is to go for special Rajma chawal and Kashmiri Dosa- the best Kashmir street food. You can cherish Rajma rice in Kashmiri flavors while Kashmiri pulav loaded with dry fruits is a must-try for people with sweet tooth. Instead of buying saffron from markets, head to village Pampore, known for saffron farming and get pure saffron from farmers straight from the fields.

On foot, me and my friend lost our way while coming back from a church in Gulmarg. It was almost 8 pm and the valley was quiet with the footsteps of just two of us breaking the silence and a few grazing animals. An old uncle, driving his Maruti and sporting a skull cap- proved to be messiah and dropped us back. “Are you children mad? Roaming in the valley at this hour on foot,” he chided us in a fatherly tone. Our taxi driver on tour- Nazir- was equally helpful along with some Punjabis- Balwinder and Sonu- we met there and they helped us cross the swampy muddy patches in valleys. Please carry proper shoes with hard sole in Kashmir.

Kashmir is never going to disappoint you. It is a lot more than blasts, blood and terrorism.

On a Solo Trip to Kashmir, a Mother Discovers the Joy of Time That Is All Her Own

The day was clear flying into Kashmir, and the plane flew so close to the powder-coated mountains that they felt almost within reach. I’d been battling guilt about this solo trip, leaving my husband back in Bombay to tend to our older teenager who was recovering from a stomach flu. Leaning into the window, I caught a fleeting glimpse of the oneness that India's mystics and yogis spoke about and knew immediately there was nowhere else I’d rather be. Kashmir’s otherworldly beauty is what has continued to draw me back, time and time again.

It was in my forties that I discovered the joy of traveling alone . While young people often travel this way to find themselves, doing the same at my age is more for reclaiming and rediscovering who I once was; enjoying my own company unencumbered by domesticity and motherhood felt thrilling and at times wrong. Seven years prior, I had booked my first solo trip to Kashmir, despite this northwest region near Pakistan being in ferment and with police presence everywhere. Yet, something about the frozen valley had spoken to my soul. In the heart of Srinagar, a riverside city of great beauty , sailing in a yellow-roofed traditional shikara boat on the cold blue waters of the lakes surrounded by glistening white mountains, I’d found a space to breathe, alone. Since then, Kashmir, which has regained some sense of calm and normalcy since that first visit, has remained my sanctuary.

I arrived in the city during c hillai kalan , Persian for “deep cold,” and the toughest winter period in the region. It was shrouded in fog, with a veil of gray skies and silent, empty houses with pink and green roofs standing tall amidst the leafless poplar trees. I was the only guest at Dar-Es-Salam, a simple hotel that sits on the edge of Lake Nigeen.

Savoring the stillness, I would gaze out at the serene lake from my window each morning. It was liberating to suddenly have all the hours of the day to myself. But I found ways to fill them that suited my schedule and desires entirely.

On a drizzly morning, I arranged for a boat ride on the Dal lake with the formidable Zabarwan mountains to the east and the Shankaracharya Hill to the west. My elderly boatman, whose face and blue eyes reminded me of a Steve McCurry portrait, helped me into the shikara and offered me a blanket and a wicker basket of kangdi , or hot coals. to hold between my hands.

We sailed along the floating gardens and markets, and stopped by the tea seller’s shikara for a cup of saffron tea. Anchored along the serene waters of the Dal were houseboats with names like Queen's Lap, Lucifer, Manhattan, Sydney, and Jannat (meaning paradise) to cater to global tastes, and also the world's only floating post office. The stillness in the dead of winter created a particular tether to the place.

Yet, traveling alone has its ways of finding company. On a previous trip, I was befriended by a local family, the Mirs, who this time invited me over for lunch. We sat on floor mats, warmed by kangdi, eating a vegetarian meal of haak, a local leafy green, nadru, or lotus stems, dried cauliflower, and pickles with rice. Their friendship helped me to get even deeper into the destination, in a way I perhaps wouldn't have been able to with travel companions. They brought me to one of the oldest historic places in Kashmir valley—the shrine of Imambara Zadibal, which was constructed in 1518 using elements of Persian architecture. The brightly colored decor was such a display of artistry, that then and there, I decided to spent the rest of the afternoon with the artisans who maintain this very specific Kashmiri craft, including brothers Ali and Hussain Mohammed. As they painted intricate designs on wood, Ali remarked that art had been a source of sustenance for Kashmiri families for generations, even through the region’s decades of militancy and curfews.

“We turned to art to keep ourselves occupied and to make a living through it,” Hussain explained. However, he also opened up about the toll that the years of confinement had taken on people's mental health, and as he spoke, I could see an unspeakable sadness in his eyes.

And yet the kindness is pervasive. Some days after, I slept on a traditional houseboat with walnut wood carvings, rich handwoven carpets, and four poster beds. The staff—three men in their seventies who fussed over me like doting aunties—ensured I was never long between servings of rich and aromatic ristaa, goshtaba, and rogan josh, each savored indulgently at my own pace. On a rainy day, I watched these men serve kehwa, a type of green tea, to soaked vendors hawking shawls and jewelry in their shikaras,

On my final day, a notification that weather had postponed my flight pinged on way to the airport: snowfall was predicted in Srinagar, and all flights would likely be canceled. I asked my taxi driver to take me to The Lalit Grand Palace , a hotel that was once the grand palace of the Maharaja of Kashmir. Sitting inside its bar, overlooking the elaborate gardens and the lake beyond it, I watched in eager anticipation of snow. The possibility of another night spent away from home thrilled me. I was grateful for my family, but I couldn't help but feel a pang of longing for a few more days of independence.

Kashmir Travelogue – A Few Days in Paradise

This article, and the next ones in the series, are an account of my first visit to Kashmir. While writing this Kashmir Travelogue, I am really hoping to give you a true picture of how you can plan a trip here, things you should keep in mind, places you must explore, and experiences that you must gain.

Forbidden paradise is what I was calling it before the trip actually. My thoughts on Kashmir were the same as the rest of the world. The very idea of visiting Kashmir makes people nervous and it did the same with me.

But then things changed when I went and spent some time there, rode my bike through its valleys, and got talking to its people. My trip to Kashmir was much more than enjoying the lush green mountains and clicking numerous photos. It was an experience in itself, one that I will cherish for the rest of my life.

Kashmir Travelogue

The first time I landed in Srinagar was about a decade ago while returning from Ladakh. Was I nervous back then? Yes definitely. I stayed in the city for a night and got out first thing the next morning.

The same routine followed in the coming years as well. Kashmir was just a stopover while we went riding to Ladakh. The only place I visited in all these years was Dal Lake in Srinagar city and that was pretty much it. Never did it occur to me to spend some time in Kashmir itself and visit the place that is known as a Jannat for its scenic beauty.

But after exploring the Himalayan regions of Uttarakhand, Himachal, Ladakh, and Spiti for years, Kashmir was bound to happen sooner or later.

Where to Go?

It all really started with a simple idea and that too several months in advance. A close friend of mine, Shoaib, and I were talking about how it had been a long time since we were out on a long trip together. We agreed we must plan a trip to someplace new sometime soon.

We talked about a few places and I suggested Kashmir, which neither of us had really been to. After that, there was not really much of a discussion and we both immediately agreed.

Next came the question of when. Through my blog, I met a Srinagar Local a few years ago. Faisal runs a motorcycle rental agency in the city. I called him and he suggested that we should plan for either August or September as it would be all lush green then.

Neither Shoaib nor I could afford to be away from work in September, and visiting Kashmir before or around the 15th of August did not sound like a good idea. Hence 3rd week of August was finalized.

How and When?

After that came “for how long”. This one proved to be a really short discussion because 9 days were all that we could afford, including 2 weekends.

Last but not least was the question of how to go. First, we thought about traveling by my Thar. But that meant 2 days spent going to Srinagar from Delhi, and then 2 days coming back home. So out of 9 days, we will spend 4 days just going to and coming back from Kashmir.

Hence, we dumped the idea of driving and decided to book a flight instead. That way, we could just fly in and out of Srinagar and rent bikes from Faisal for traveling locally. We will be able to dedicate all 9 days to exploring as much as possible.

Now all this was happening several months in advance. Our trip was finalized for late August and we booked our tickets in early May, about 4 months before the travel dates.

Then in early June, It just so happened that I was talking to another close friend of mine, Lavish, on a different topic when the idea of asking him about coming along occurred.

Shoaib, Lavish, and I had been on several trips together before and I was actually surprised that I did not ask him sooner. When I mentioned the plan to Lavish, he too agreed. After about half an hour of getting his leaves approved, his flight ticket too was booked.

The only difference was that Shoaib and I were both in Delhi. Lavish however would have to first travel from Dehradun to Delhi and then fly to Srinagar.

After numerous discussions and taking inputs from Faisal (and after multiple changes), the following itinerary was decided. This however was just the initial plan. I was certain that the actual travel will turn out to be completely different.

• Arrive in Srinagar and head straight to Gulmarg – Day 1
• Travel from Gulmarg to Doodhpathri and reach Srinagar by evening – Day 2
• Srinagar local sightseeing – Day 3
• Srinagar to Pahalgam – Day 4
• Pahalgam to Aharbal and Srinagar by evening – Day 5
• Srinagar to Gurez – Day 6
• Gurez to Sonamarg – Day 7
• Sonamarg to Srinagar – Day 8
• Fly Out of Srinagar – Day 9

I wanted to rent motorcycles for the entire duration of the trip. But Faisal had prior bookings he had to keep up with.

So for the first 2 days, it was decided that we would rent a cab and then take the handover of motorcycles from Faisal on Day 3. The driver would pick us up from the airport and take us to Gulmarg.

After this, it was pretty much just the wait for D-Day to arrive and getting the travel plan ready. We literally counted the days to the day of the trip and all 3 of us were quite excited.

Final Itinerary

I kept changing the itinerary multiple times trying to find the best way to explore the best that I could. Faisal of course was my primary source of information. I really thank the guy for being so patient with my wild amount of questions.

However, here I’m gonna talk about summer only.  A friend  (Santosh/ Bablu)  recently   asked me for tips on the best places in Kashmir to visit in summer. So, this piece is dedicated to him. 

Yes, Kashmir indeed is heaven on earth. I know it’s cliche, but I can’t help it; this is what comes to my mind first while thinking about Kashmir. I would actually go a step further to say that heaven might actually look like Kashmir, rather than Kashmir resembling heaven. Because Kashmir is for real, while heaven is imaginary! No wonder then that it’s the most sought after natural-destination in India.

Though Kashmir is an all-season destination, summer is when it receives the most visitors, because it’s the most pleasant during that time.  While writing this article on the best places in Kashmir for summer,  I draw mostly from experiences of my summer 2017 family trip.

Kashmir is indeed heaven on earth

If you are a landscape lover, or a nature lover, there is perhaps no better place than Kashmir. From overwhelming heights of the Himalayas to pleasing meadows, from snow-clad white mountain views to lush green hills, from charming lakes to beautiful gardens, it’s a complete paradise. 

Apart from Lakshadweep, Kashmir is the only place where Muslims have a majority in India. What this means is that a more than thousand-year old thriving Islamic culture to explore. Their food, clothes, craft, dance, music and language are all very unique partly and partly inspired by the middle-east.

However, in this article, I’m presenting only the natural beauty of Kashmir with a focus on the best places in Kashmir to visit in summer.

Is Kashmir safe for travellers?

First things first. The first question on the mind of first-time travellers to Kashmir is whether Kashmir is safe to travel. 

Though I have forgotten the name of our driver for the trip, I would never forget his words. He said in Hindi mixed with  Kashmiri dialect:  “ Saheb, Kashmir se jyada khaetirdari aur mehmannawazi aapko duniya mein kahin nahi milegi “, meaning: “Sir, you won’t experience better hospitality and warmth  anywhere in the world  than in Kashmir”. He further added, “ Haan humare masle kai saare hain, par hum apne mehmanon ko isme nahi uljhate hain. Sine pe goli kha lenge, magar apne mehmanon ko kuchh na hone denge “, meaning: “Yes, we have our issues, but we never bother our guests with any of them. We can take the bullets on our chest rather than harming our guests”.

He echoed exactly how we felt while visiting across the state. Everywhere we went, from hotels to shops, from people on the street to officials, everyone was welcoming, and helpful through out. I don’t remember even one unpleasant incident anywhere.

While he shared his anger and disenchantment regarding the political situation in the state (I don’t want to share his specific views here), he was particularly courteous in explaining to us their predicament.

Political violence doesn’t affect tourists

While political violence in Kashmir  has a long history, one would rarely hear about violence against or involving tourists. There are two main reasons for this. First, Kashmiris in general (and people of hills all over) are naturally warm and lovable; they take their hospitality very seriously. Two, economy of Kashmir heavily depends on tourism.  So, they take special care that tourists have a safe time there.

So, tourists are safe and happy in Kashmir. No need to worry. Just keep normal precautions like one would generally keep while travelling anywhere else. Keep your eyes and ears open. Don’t argue with people, especially avoid political arguments. Yes, you may try to listen to them, and their side of the story, and do respect their views. It actually helps. Moreover, it can actually change your perspective.

A summer experiencing the best places in Kashmir

In my younger days, I have heard my mom say many a times that she wanted to visit Kashmir at least once in life. At last, she had the opportunity of visiting her dream destination. In fact, Kashmir perhaps is a dream destination for all Indians. 

In the summer of 2017, we decided to visit Kashmir for the first time along with the family of a childhood friend. We were seven of us: I, Parina and maa (mom), and four of my friend’s family- Asha, Manas and their two kids. It was a five-day trip covering five places: Srinagar, Pahalgam, Gulmarg, Sonmarg and Doodhpathri. 

Five Best Places in Kashmir to visit in summer

Kashmir is beautiful through out the year. It’s pleasant in summers, and bone chilling cold in the winters. However, a lot of people visit there in the winter for snow-sports and enjoying the views of white mountainous landscape. In this article though, I’m going to share my experiences of the best places in Kashmir to visit in summer.

Every inch of Kashmir is so beautiful that I find it difficult to pick the best places in Kashmir. So, it’s only for a practical travel-planning purpose that I’m sharing my experiences of the five best places in Kashmir. Each of these five places is different from the other with a special character of its own.

While Srinagar is the capital city and is especially famous for its iconic Dal lake, Gulmarg is a great place for snow-experience. Pahalgam has the best meadows and valley views. If you want to feel a glacier under your feet, Sonmarg is the place for you. Last but not the least, if you want peaceful idyllic charm of a river flowing in a valley, Doodhpathri is the best place.

There are quite a few other wonderful places in Kashmir, but for a first-timer, especially in summer, these are the best places to choose.

If you want to have a plan:

In case you are a first time traveller, and a five day trip makes sense for you, here’s a suggestive plan:

• Day-1: Arrive in Srinagar, check in; explore the iconic gardens; evening at  Dal lake
• Day-2: Pre-lunch: local Srinagar (gardens and mosques); post-lunch: Doodhpathri
• Day-3: Pahalgam; pony ride to Baisaran valley
• Day-4:   Visit Gulmarg, take the gondola ride, relax on the meadows  
• Day-5: Visit Sonmarg, relax on the meadows; hike up to Thajiwas glacier.

For your planning convenience, here’s an indicative map marked with the best places in Kashmir to visit in the summer.

Without shadow of a doubt, Srinagar is the most beautiful city in India, and one of the best places in Kashmir to visit any time of the year. The capital city offers the most number of things to do. However, the three quintessential things that Srinagar is known for are the picturesque Dal Lake, the iconic gardens and its beautiful mosques. 

Not to forget the rich history and cultural heritage of the city as well. Established at least 1500 years ago, the city has passed through a number of distinct cultural phases, and still retains some of those characters. I park the idea of a detailed presentation of the city for a later article. Here I’m just giving a snapshot of the best places/ experiences not to miss.

Shikara ride in Dal Lake:

I always love a boat ride in the calm waters of a lake. From the backwaters of Alleppey to the lake city  Udaipur  and the hill station of  Nainital , lakes are at the center of all tourist attractions. Dal lake is no exception. But for me, the charm of a shikara (small boat) ride in Dal lake is unmatchable. 

With the great Himalayas in the backdrop, the calm blue waters of the lake make for a spectacular sight. The colourful shikars took us around the lake, first to a peaceful part, and then through the floating markets of Dal lake. I found the shikara-vendors selling kahwa (a Kashmiri hot beverage), and other craft products to be a very interesting sight. However, riding a boat through the floating shops  mostly   selling Kashmiri hand-made textile products was absolutely fascinating.  

Another memorable experience at the lake was visiting the Gulshan Book-Cafe. Do ask your shikara rider for the cafe and spend an hour there.

Houseboats of Dal Lake:

Though people call them houseboats, I prefer calling them boat-houses as they are not boats in real meaning of the term. Unlike boats, they don’t really float around the lake; they float, but are stuck to the ground on the bank of the lake. They are bigger than the houseboats of Alleppey in  Kerala , and give an experience of a resort.

Though we didn’t have the opportunity of staying in the houseboats, I’m sure that watching sunrises and sunsets must be special experiences from those houseboats. Moreover, they look fascinating enough from within the lake to go around them.

Gardens of Srinagar:

Srinagar has to be the city with maximum number of beautiful gardens in India.  Though Bangalore,  Ooty , Kodaikanal and  Delhi  would give it a stiff competition, still Srinagar would win it hands down! In fact, t he gardens of Srinagar are easily comparable to and often better than those in Europe (see:  Paris  |||  Geneva  |||  Amsterdam ).

Among the most beautiful gardens in Srinagar, the three Mughal Gardens come to my mind first:  Nishat Bagh  | Shalimar Bagh | Chasme Shahi Garden . Nishat Bagh is the largest one, and the most impressive. Situated on the foothills of Zabarwan mountains (part of Pir Panjal range of Himalayas) on one side, and Dal lake on the other, one cannot ask for better views! The terraced garden is a feast to the eyes with hundreds of varieties of flowers, and the magnificent Chinar trees (that resemble maple trees). It has been enchanting the visitors since 1633!

Apart from the Mughal Gardens, the other must-visit gardens are:  Pari Mahal  |  Indira Gandhi Tulip Garden  (Asia’s largest tulip garden) |  Nehru Memorial Botanical Garden | Harwan Garden | Naseem Bagh, in descending order of my favorites list. 

For want of time, if you want to prioritize, at least visit the ones in bold letters above. Pari Mahal gives the best panoramic view of the Dal lake.  Please note that the Tulip garden opens only from end-March to April, the spring-summer season.

Popular Muslim shrines in Srinagar:

Irrespective of whether you want to visit the shrines of Srinagar for reasons of faith or not, they are absolutely worth visiting for their architectural beauty. The two most important Muslim shrines in Srinagar are the Hazratbal Shrine and the Jamia Masjid.

Hazratbal shrine: 

Built in the 17th century, this is one of the most important Muslim shrines in India as it hosts strands of hair of the Prophet Muhammed himself! The shrine, also known as Dargah Sharif, is as much popular among locals as among travellers. It has a long and quite interesting history  (click to read).  For a long time, it has been a symbol of Kashmir’s communal harmony. 

We spent an evening at the shrine and loved the experience. From the shrine’s campus, the panoramic view of the lake with a backdrop of the mountains was quite a spectacle. We sat there at the steps leading to the lake for more than an hour.

Jamia Masjid:

The most important mosque in Srinagar, Jamia  Masjid  was first built in 1402. Afterwards, it was rebuilt by the Mughals. I loved its architecture especially because of its novelty. Instead of the regular dome structure, it has a pyramidal shape, mostly inspired by Persian architectural style, with some resemblance with Buddhist Pagodas. 

Enamored by its unique design (by seeing in pictures), I had decided to definitely visit this mosque. On the last day of our trip, while coming back from Sonmarg to catch our flight, we were actually running a little late. Still then, I requested our driver to make a quick stop at the mosque. 

In spite of suffering severe damages due to major fires three times in its history, it still dazzles as ever, and can host up to 33000 worshippers at a time. 

Doodhpathri

For me, the second in the list of best places to visit in Kashmir in summer is Doodhpathri (literally: milky-rock). Though many visitors give it a miss, we made it a point to spend a good part of a day here. In fact, not having a large crowd was a major reason for enjoying the views and tranquility even more. Could you believe, i t’s just about 45 kms from Srinagar, but still is a hidden gem!

We loved its enchanting meadows and the valley with river Shaliganga flowing through milky white rock beds.  The valley has two major points of attraction: the meadows and the river valley. 

First we headed to the river point where we crossed over to the other side over a small wooden bridge. Indeed, true to its name the rock bed looked milky white, and the water too looked white! Shaliganga river flowing through the pine forests over the white rock bed made for a painting-like scenery.

While coming back, we stopped over at the meadows. What a pleasant sight that was! With very few tourists around, we went up to a picnicking local family to strike a nice chat. I loved having conversation with a local shepherd who was attending to his sheep grazing at the meadow. Whenever next time I’m in Srinagar, I’ll try to revisit this charming place.  

Pahalgam (90 kms from Srinagar) is famous for its stunning valleys like Betaab valley, Aru valley and Baisaran valley. On reaching Pahalgam, we realized that not all the valley are reachable by car. From Pahalgam, there are two routes. While one goes towards Betaab valley and Chandanwadi, the other takes you to Aru valley and Lidder river valley. One of Kashmir’s most beautiful treks, the  Tarsar-Marsar lake trek  begins from Aru.

However, to reach the most stunning beauty of them all- the Baisaran valley, one must take a pony ride. On that ride only, they take you to a few more view points like Dabyan, Deno valley and Kashmir valley. 

We took that difficult pony ride across the hills to the Baisaran valley, which people fondly call ‘Mini Switzerland’. It was raining a bit before we reached Pahalgam. So, the narrow pathway up the hill was slippery, which made the ride even more difficult. However, it was okay, as even my mom could take the ride. In fact, she enjoyed the challenge of that trecherous ride. As they say, the best views come after the hardest journey.

Once we reached the Baisaran valley, one view of the hidden meadow, and all our pain was gone! It was a stunning sight with snow-capped mountains (Pir Panjal range) and deep green pine forests surrounding the valley. We spent more than half a day there walking around the lush green grounds and taking pictures with rabbits and pigeons. 

Pahalgam undoubtedly, has to be there in the top five best places in Kashmir to visit in the summer.

Next on the list of best places to visit in Kashmir in summer has to be Gulmarg, 50 kms away from Srinagar.  It offers the best winter sports avenues in India. However, w inter is a difficult time for me to tolerate the chilling cold. So, even t hough Gulmarg is a round-the-year destination, I prefer the summer.  

In summer, one can take the gondola (cable car) ride up to the snow point, and enjoy some skiing as well. Moreover, the large meadow with a small hill, atop which there is a small Shiva temple makes for a gorgeous sight. From near this central meadow, one has to take the gondola.

The Gondola ride:

For us, the most awaited activity of the trip was taking this gondola ride.  We reached there late in the morning, and took the gondola right away to the snow point. We had to wear those long boots and extra-jackets that we got from a vendor. However, I don’t think it was really necessary. Maybe the boot was a bit helpful, but the jacket was not required (the normal jacket that we were wearing, would have been enough). 

The view from the gondola was wonderful, and the ride was exciting, to say the least. At the top, walking over the snow, the smile on the face of my mother was very special to me. She was so happy! Parina did some skiing, but I don’t like trying out these things for 30 minutes!

The gondola ride has two phases. We rode up to phase-1 only. From the end of phase-2, one can trek up to (5 kms) the Alpather lake, beyond which is the Apharwat peak.

Once back to the central meadows, we took a pony ride around the meadow. The snow-clad mountains overlooking the green meadow was a stunning sight! There is a small market near the meadows, where we had our modest lunch, and left for Srinagar to reach before the evening.

Things to do in Gulmarg:

• Gondola ride to snow point; enjoy snow sports up there
• Walk around the central meadow and hike up to the Shiva temple
• Trekking to Alpather lake; the lake remains partially frozen even in the summer. Alternately, one can take a pony ride, or gondola ride to reach there.
• Ride a pony up to Khilanmarg (only 5 kms away)
• Play golf at the golf course just on the outskirts of Gulmarg

Last but not the least, Sonmarg has to be there on the list of best places in Kashmir to visit in summer. We visited this gorgeous valley on the last day of our trip. It’s about 90 kms from Srinagar, and takes about 2 hrs to reach.  When we drove up to Sonmarg in May, the roads were cut through thick layers of snow! So, the route doesn’t open till late April or May; and they close in late October.

Because this route goes towards  Ladakh , the view of snow-clad mountains gets more frequent on this route. All over the route, the sight of small streams formed out of the glaciers, flowing between two mountains makes the route picture perfect!

Sonmarg is famous for the lakes and the treks. We were a big group with my mom being part of it. So, trekking was out of question. However, we did hike up to the Thajiwas glacier (9186 ft), the origin of Sind river. Standing on the awe-inspiring glacier was an amazing experience.

• If you have time, you may explore the nearby areas of Baltal valley and Zoji La pass. Sonmarg is especially popular among trekkers in the summer for it offers some of the most amazing trek routes in India.

Treks in Sonmarg:

• Kashmir Great Lakes Trek: Sonmarg is the base location for this famous, but difficult trek. The lakes on the trek (in sequence) are:  Vishansar lake –  Krishansar lake –  Gadsar lake –   Satsar lake –  Gangabal lake –   Nandkol lake. Read a useful article on the  detailed trek route . 
• Other major treks: Amarnath peak | Machoi peak | Sirbal peak | Kalahoi peak.

Beyond the best places in Kashmir

Of course, there are some more wonderful destinations in Kashmir beyond my list of best places in Kashmir to visit in the summer. 

• Gurez Valley: Kishanganga river | Wular lake | Razdan pass | Dawar swamp | Habba Khatoon peak
• Yusmarg: It’s believed that Jesus visited this valley. Major attractions: Sang-e-safed (white rocks) | Pakharpora shrine | Nilang lake

• Anantnag: Martand sun temple | Jhelum river.

Best Places in Kashmir: Travel Tips

Best time to visit:.

• For pleasant weather: April to September (though roads to northern Kashmir open only in May)
• For winter sports/ snow view: December to March.

How to reach:

• The best way is to reach Srinagar by air
• Nearest railway station, Udhampur is more than 200 kms away! Jammu Tawi (270 kms) is also an important station
• Regular bus services from Jammu, Delhi and Chandigarh.

• First check  safety tips  from the J&K police 
• Carry your documents- identity cards, address proof, etc.
• Keep the phone always with location feature turned on
• Don’t start discussing politics; even if it starts somehow, don’t argue with them
• Carry your woolens, even in the summer
• Also carry your rain jacket and umbrella; it can rain in the summers
• Having good quality shoes for rough terrains is a good idea
• Be ready to live without phone for a while, if network issues arise.

Concluding thoughts on the best places in Kashmir

One cannot ‘experience’ all that Kashmir has to offer in five days. But our trip had a bit of everything: from boat rides to gondola rides, from romancing the tranquil waters of the lake to encountering the snowy mountains, we had it all. Whenever people have asked me about my favorite landscape experience, Kashmir has always sprung up in my mind first. It’s just picture perfect. Even if you take a picture with your eyes closed, you won’t be disappointed with the output.  

However, I remember Kashmir not only for its natural beauty.

It was not only rejuvenating for the battered soul, but also enriching for the hungry mind. I always wanted to experience that mystical land that is heaven on one hand and the center of many a controversies/ conflicts on the other. I haven’t shared much of my interactions with the locals and their viewpoints for obvious reasons. But those conversations were indeed an eye-opener.

A Trip to Kashmir Essay

Read this article to know about an interesting trip to Kashmir which is paradise on earth not only because of its natural beauty but because of the beauty of Kashmiris’ hearts.

As it was planned to return back to home we started our journey early in the morning. It was my first ever trip in which I was the only one to drive the car. We had planned to return back from Peer Ki Gali. However, on the way, we decided to take tea in Shopian.

When we were about to reach our destination, the car stopped suddenly and was totally jammed. We were stunned to find the car in such a situation. The joy of such a pleasant journey vanished away. The only thing that relieved us was the hospitality of the passers-by. A number of people stopped near us to inquire about the matter.

One of them told us about the location of the mechanic. I and Sajid went to the workshop. On the way I found slogans like “Burhan is Alive”, “Pakistan Zindabad”, “We want freedom”, “Hizbul Mujahideen Area”  inscribed on the walls. I had never seen this in my life.

We reached the workshop. The mechanic was busy with someone else’s car so the owner came and started talking to us. He told us that he is there since last two years but was never scolded by army living beside his workshop. He also said that a normal Kashmiri neither desires Pakistan nor chaos.

The mechanic went with us and tried for about two hours but could not even move the car. He then called another mechanic who came shortly and after inspecting the car told that the gearbox has sealed and jammed the car. Then he freed the tires and took the car to his garage.

Seeing our depressed faces, all the 3-4 mechanics left their work and started operating upon the gearbox. We were still worried as we had neither money nor enough time to return back. The owner of this workshop was even more friendly. To divert our worry, he took all of us on a drive. The gearbox was finally repaired. The work was of about 8000/- but the owner charged only 3500/-

It was getting evening and we came to know that curfew had been imposed in Shopian. A person offered us to stay at his lodge. We thanked him and thought of going to Srinagar instead. We also came to know that the person was SSP of Shopian. We never saw such a friendly behaviour of any Police Officer.

We left for Srinagar. On the way, we saw stone pelters and requested them to let us go. To our surprise, they were quite friendly only our car was allowed to go. We reached Srinagar and after visiting Hazrat Gal Shrine, booked a hotel.

The owner neither asked for any identity proof nor any such information. Neither of us had eaten anything since morning and our lunch became dinner.

Having driven the car for a full day, I exhausted and fell asleep at once. The next day we began our journey early. We took breakfast at Shopian. The shopkeeper told us something which was quite new for us and for every Indian who thinks that a Kashmiri is a born terrorist.

He said that a few years back some soldiers who were probably in search of terrorists peeped into a house, beat the old man to death and assaulted his daughter as well. His son who was not at home returned back and after knowing the truth was enraged and became thirsty for the revenge.

Later on, a friend of his influenced him to take the weapon in his hands and take revenge. Thus he became a terrorist and was killed later on. The story taught us something which our media never dared to tell.

He also told another story that made us love our soldiers as well.

He told us that once some militants who had some enmity with an Imam, went into the mosque to kill him. They went into the Mosque with guns and without taking off their shoes. Without waiting for the imam to finish his prayer, they shorted him to death and went away.

Soon after, the army came to Mosque. They took off their shoes and went into the Mosque with due respect to inquire about the murder. They assured people to kill the accused and the very next day all of the militants were killed by them with the help of Kashmiris. This story was equally surprising.

Having taken our breakfast we resumed our journey.

One may ask why Indians hate Kashmiris?

Recently about 7 seven Amarnath Yatris were killed and every person who had a human heart condemned this act. But it was not terrorists who were responsible for their death but the mistake (intentional or unintentional) of the driver, police, army and Yatris as well contributed to their death.

The news channels without knowing the whole truth started using all types of abuses for Kashmiris. One journalist went to the extent in his speech that it is wrong to say that terrorism has no religion, instead a terrorist is always a Muslim. No media channel showed how Kashmiris helped all the injured Yatris in hospitalising them.

Problem with we people is that we believe in Indian media which has left the path of truth for the sake of money and which condemns Kashmiris and tries to defame them. We never dare to appreciate their hospitality, their respect for every religion, their hearts filled with love, fraternity and respect. We never try to kill the reasons that force people to choose bloody life.

The politics of subcontinental countries over Kashmir has ruined the prosperity of Kashmir. However, I think that no one can ever understand the love as well as sorrows of Kashmiris.

Whether a Kashmiri wants freedom or not, I don’t know, but I can say with full confidence that he wants peace, love, sympathy and equal rights.

We returned back with a heavy heart with something which we won’t be able to forget.

Essay on Tourism in Jammu and Kashmir!

The practice of holiday-making away from one’s normal place of residence is known as tourism. Tourists are defined as people visiting a place other than that in which they normally reside, for a period including an overnight stay, for any reason other than following an occupation remunerated in the place visited.

This operational definition, therefore, includes certain people travel­ling for reasons other than holiday-making, (e.g., conference participants, pilgrims) but it is normally impracticable to exclude them when data are col­lected. The distinction between Recreation and Tourism is that recreation involves leisure activities of less than 24 hours’ duration away from home, whereas tourism involves a longer time scale and therefore, requires more in­frastructure in the form of accommodation provision.

The International Association of Scientific Experts on Tourism (AIEST) has defined tourism as the sum of phenomena and relationships arising from the travel and stay of non-residents, in so far as they do not lead to permanent residence and are not connected with any earning activity. The essence of the tourist economy is that the tourist spends, in the cho­sen holiday area, money that has been earned elsewhere.

Charistaller (1964) has pointed out that tourism is a very important free-market agent of the spatial redistribution of wealth. In any economy, tourism acts as an export sector, bringing money into the area, setting up both income multipliers cre­ating jobs.

The history of tourism is as old as the human society itself. The early tourism can be traced from the period when man set sail and attempted to know the immediate world around. His inherent zeal for enchanted un­known lands and curiosity for new world culminated into early travels.

At the start of the present century, travel and tourism were confined only to af­fluent few, i.e., rich, religious zealots, conquerors, the well educated and the elites who were fascinated by the enchanting beauty and mysteries of un­known land. Tourism has, however, grown from the pursuits of a privileged few to a mass movement of people; with the urge to discover the unknown places and to seek change in environment and to undergo new experiences.

The dramatic transformation of rudimentary tourism into a giant phe­nomenon has resulted from a set of physico, socio-economic, political, psychological and aesthetic factors. Modern tourism upsurged after the Sec­ond World War commencing with a spurt in human mobility and intensive application of mechanization. In the ending part of the 18th century, indus­trialization resulted into commercialism and urbanization.

Consequently, the standard of living of the people went up and there was a concomitant rise in leisure hours compelling people to adopt travel and recreation as an inevitable lifestyle. Also, within a short span, human members increased tre­mendously particularly in the urban centres. All these factors culminated into ushering a new wave of migration, typically termed as ‘Mass Tourism’.

At present, touring and outdoor recreation have become a genuine social, economic and psychological need, not for individuals alone but also for our entire society and economy. Tourism development holds immense appeal because of anticipated economic benefits of income and employment. In terms of employment, it is the largest industry that provides jobs to about one in every 16 workers worldwide. It helps in removing the regional dis­parities, particularly in underdeveloped and backward areas.

Kashmir is one of the most beautiful tourist destinations of the world. It used to attract enormous number of domestic and international tourists be­fore 1989. The period between 1989 and 1998 is a lean period from the tourists point of view.

The unstable political situation of the state, the mili­tancy and slogan of Azadi (independence) discouraged the tourists and recreation-seekers. Tourism, however, is a dominant economic activity in the state. Moreover, about 20 per cent of the workforce of the state is di­rectly or indirectly dependent on tourism.

After agriculture, tourism is the main economic activity in the state. The Jammu and Kashmir state is quite rich in renewable resources (water, forest and fresh air) and scenic beauty. Its lush green forests, rich wildlife, snow-clad peaks, mountainous gorges, giant glaciers, rich fishing grounds, lofty skiing grounds, carpet green turfs, perennial rivers, gushing fountains, floating gardens in Dal Lake, hissing springs, cool breeze, shimmering lakes, invigorating climate, apple-almond orchards, saffron fields and benevolent and kind hearted folk are well known all over the word. In the absence of basic mineral (iron-ore, copper, coal, petroleum, etc.), its productive fields, valuable forests, water and invigorating climate are the great bounties of na­ture.

My grandmother's house in my village has often been one of my favourite places to be. Everyone has always held a special place in their hearts for their grandmother's home. We spent numerous summers with our granny when we were younger. Her home appeared to stand out from the rest in some way that made it special.

Enjoyment time

I enjoy playing outside while picking fresh fruits from the trees and eating freshly prepared vegetables. Frequently, I help my grandmother sow seeds in the garden. There are several reasons why I value this place so highly. There is something incredibly unique about the house. I feel at ease and relaxed here.

Why I Love My Grandmother’s House

First of all, the atmosphere at my grandmother’s house is distinctly different. I am at peace here. There is no noise or pollution because it is in a village. Additionally, there are no traffic jams here. I always wake early so that I can go for a walk and take in some fresh air. My body and mind are both revitalised by the fresh air. My grandmother makes me a delicious breakfast. In the evening, my whole family gathers to share our life stories as our grandfather makes tea.

My grandparents' home also has a small garden with grass that is a vibrant green colour. In the garden, there are swings as well. There, we also like playing entertaining games with our relatives, including water fights. We frequently spend the evenings sitting on the roof, looking up at the stars.

Holidays At Grandmother’s House

Over the holidays, there is always a lot of laughing and playing games at grandma’s house. Uncle's loud, recognisable giggle may be heard for miles. My aunt never misses an opportunity to comment on his laughter. The living room of our grandmother's home is where she regularly can be seen sitting and gazing out the window, close to the front entrance. She sits at this location to read the newspaper daily and sip on her old-fashioned steaming black coffee.

She can lose hours watching the birds fly to the feeder next to the window in her living room. Most birds have names that our grandmother is familiar with and recognises. She never skips a chance to observe the squirrels. Everything blossoms, and there are fresh flowers everywhere throughout the summer. In our town, the natural beauty is at an all-time high, and it's impossible to keep your eyes off the stunning surroundings. A pond is located behind the house. My cousins and I go fishing in the pond.

The village's residents lead simple, healthy lives. People care for one another and are always available. They make a lot of effort to maintain the facility's cleanliness because they care about it. We always look forward to our summer vacation so we may visit Grandma and Grandpa. Anyone who has met them will attest to their humility. All of this adds up to why I love my grandparents house and why it is my favourite place.
