The 8 best safari day trips and weekends from Cape Town

Track down the elusive ‘Big Five’, and have a whale of a time doing it

Alicia Erickson

Can you go on a safari from Cape Town? It’s a question often asked by curious travellers thinking of planning a trip to the Mother City, unsure of whether they’ll be able to catch a glimpse of various fantastic creatures. Happily, the answer is a big ‘Yes indeed.’ Cape Town’s charm extends far beyond the urban centre, and one of its most alluring elements – beyond the mesmerising mountain views and glimmering Atlantic Seaboard – is its proximity to nature.

South Africa is renowned for its wildlife, and while the Western Cape may be a little more under-the-radar in this arena than other regions, it still has its fair share of nature reserves. Just a short drive from Cape Town you can spot the ‘Big Five’ (that ’s:  lions, leopards, rhinos, elephants and African buffaloes) roaming the veld, learn about conservation efforts and spot whales breaching from the Atlantic Coast. For those wanting to take a walk on the wild side, here are the best lodges and reserves for a safari day trip from Cape Town.

The best safaris near Cape Town

Aquila Game Reserve

1.  Aquila Game Reserve

At just under a two-hour drive from the city, Aquila Game Reserve has certainly earned a name for itself as a top safari experience near Cape Town. The reserve helped reintroduce the Big Five to the Western Cape and is rooted in wildlife rehabilitation, land protection and community support. Whether you opt for a day trip or book a couple of nights, you can take a traditional safari in an off-road vehicle or choose to search for the Big Five from a quad bike. If you’re lucky, you may just spot the elusive Cape mountain leopard. After a day of wildlife thrills, soak in the infinity pool, refuel with some traditional South African cuisine or treat yourself to a spa afternoon. Accommodation ranges from rustic digs to plush cottages.

Inverdoorn Game Reserve

2.  Inverdoorn Game Reserve

A Big Five game reserve located around a two-and-a-half-hour drive from Cape Town, Inverdoorn Game Reserve is a wild escape into the arid plains of the vast, dessert-like Karoo region. A home to lions, elephants, giraffe, zebras, hippos and wildebeest, Inverdoorn also hosts a cheetah rescue and rehabilitation centre. This conseration-focused establishment offers an opportunity to disconnect in the wilderness while searching for some of South Africa’s most exciting creatures. Rest your head in cosy, tented camps and relax in a pool with views over the veld and golden mountains on the horizon.

Fairy Glen Private Game Reserve

3.  Fairy Glen Private Game Reserve

One of the closest safari experiences to Cape Town, Fairy Glen Private Game Reserve is set against the craggy foothills of the Brandwacht Mountains. Just over an hour from the city by car, Fairy Glen transports visitors to a magical, rustic setting, with options for both day and overnight safaris. Count yourself extra lucky if you spot a leopard, but elephants, lions and other creatures roam the plains in relative abundance. Stay overnight in the self-catering accommodation to maximise your chances of spotting various fantastic beasts at sunrise and sunset.

Goudkop Bush Camp

4.  Goudkop Bush Camp

This simple and underrated wildlife destination is found two hours north of Cape Town. Goudkop Bush Camp is a quiet cattle and sheep farm on Skrik van Rondom Farmstall, set in the heart of the Sandveld Nature Reserve. Stay in a thatched roof hut tucked into the slopes of the valley, hike along rocky trails, look for elk and other wildlife on a game drive, or simply unwind and do nothing in this slice of nature. The on-site restaurant and farm shop will keep you happily fed and watered during your stay.

Sanbona Wildlife Reserve

5.  Sanbona Wildlife Reserve

Stretching across 58,000 hectares, Sanbona Wildlife Reserve is a pristine and unparalleled experience in the South African wilderness. A three-and-a-half-hour drive from Cape Town – taking in the stunning scenery of the R62 tourist route along the way – will get you to Sanbona, situated in the rugged and beautiful valley of the Little Karoo, just outside Montagu. Treat yourself to a weekend of wildlife viewings rooted in conservation, while unwinding in luxury safari tents or manor houses among the still plains. Elephants, lions and giraffes are all in the mix when you’re on a nature walk or a safari drive through the rolling hills and dramatic rock formations. If you fancy tracking down some visual wonders that are even easier to locate, the stargazing here is also pretty spectacular.

Gondwana Private Game Reserve

6.  Gondwana Private Game Reserve

Situated along the Garden Route in Mossel Bay, Gondwana Private Game Reserve is a little further from Cape Town (a four-and-a-half-hour drive), but certainly worth the journey if time is on your side. Eco-friendly camps and villas ooze luxury safari aesthetic, while also blending into the towering green hills. From spotting elephants wandering the reserve and lions napping in the sun, to learning about the native fynbos species and searching for sunbirds, falcons and cranes on a bird-centric safari, a weekend at Gondwana promises to be a wild ride.

Grootbos Nature Reserve

7.  Grootbos Nature Reserve

Grootbos Nature Reserve embodies the meaning of ‘where the mountains meet the sea.’ Throw some forests into the equation, and you’ve got a spectacular eco-reserve. Just over two hours from Cape Town, Grootbos transports its guests deep into nature and offers an experience that’s notably different from a typical safari weekend. Set out from the elegant accommodation on a botanical walk to learn about endangered plants, look for over 20 species of mammal (including many types of antelope) and don’t forget to keep an eye out for whales appearing along the coast.

Hermanus

8.  Hermanus

Formerly a small fishing village, Hermanus has blossomed into a charming harbour town that attracts visitors from far and wide. Whale watching is what brings the crowds here, as Hermanus is graced with migrating southern right whales from June through to December. Try and spot them from the wind-swept beaches or join a boat tour and spend a day experiencing the splendour of these mighty marine mammals. Hop in your car, make that 90-minute journey from Cape Town and stay for a day or two in this whale watching paradise.

Top Five Game Reserves for Safaris Near Cape Town

south africa safari near cape town

Cape Town is known around the world for its stunning scenery, world-class restaurants, and fascinating cultural landmarks (including Robben Island and Bo-Kaap ). However, what many visitors don't know is that the city is also a convenient base for exploring some of the finest game reserves in the Western Cape. If you don't have time to head north to major South African reserves like Kruger or Mkhuze , don't worry; you can also look for safari animals in Cape Town's backyard. All of the reserves listed in this article are within a few hours' drive of the Mother City. They're also malaria -free.

Note: Driving times given below are based on departure from central Cape Town near the V&A Waterfront and may be considerably shorter or longer if you're staying in the suburbs. For the quickest travel times, make sure to plan your journey around off-peak traffic hours.

Buffelsfontein Game Reserve

Although safari purists may balk at the idea of a reserve that keeps its carnivores in separate enclosures, Buffelsfontein Game Reserve is nevertheless the most convenient option for those with limited time to spare. As a 1,600-hectare converted cattle ranch, the park is just over an hour's drive from central Cape Town and is home to four of the Big Five (lion, leopard, buffalo, and white rhino). Guests will also have the opportunity to spot cheetah , giraffe, zebra, and several iconic antelope species on a half or full guided game drive.

The half drive lasts for 1.5 hours, while the full drive takes around three hours and departs at 9 a.m. or 2 p.m. If you book an afternoon full drive on any day except Sunday, you'll also get to see the park's carnivores being fed. For a totally different safari experience, consider booking a mountain bike safari instead. If you do have time to extend your stay, there are a variety of accommodation options, from bush camps and self-catering chalets for budget travelers to more luxurious four-sleeper cottages. There's a restaurant, swimming pool, and bar on-site.

Aquila Private Game Reserve

Located a two-hour drive northeast of Cape Town, Aquila Private Game Reserve  is a 4-star park offering half-day, full-day, and overnight safari options. The 10,000-hectare conservancy is home to the Big Five including rhino, elephant, lion, leopard, and buffalo. All five of these species have been reintroduced to the Western Cape after being driven to the brink of extinction by the big game hunters of the past. The park is also home to the Aquila Animal Rescue and Conservation Centre , which provides a sanctuary for rescued safari animals that are no longer able to survive in the wild.

If the idea of a traditional safari vehicle is a little too tame, consider booking a horse-ride or quad bike safari instead. Although the park is close enough for a day trip from Cape Town, overnight accommodations include a luxury lodge and several exquisite chalets. The chalets offer indoor fireplaces and outdoor showers, allowing you to fully appreciate the magic of life in the bush. Other useful amenities include a bar, a restaurant, an infinity pool, and a spa. Aquila also offers transfers from Cape Town hotels via mini-bus, private vehicle, airplane, or helicopter.

Inverdoorn Game Reserve

Half an hour beyond Aquila Private Game Reserve lies  Inverdoorn Game Reserve , another 10,000-hectare protected area in the Klein Karoo. Inverdoorn achieved Big Five status in 2012 with the introduction of a herd of elephants. It is also home to non-profit organization Western Cape Cheetah Conservation and visitors are given the opportunity to see these magnificent predators up close. Since 2018, the reserve has implemented a strict no-touch policy in accordance with the latest ethical conservation practices.

The park also offers a choice of 4- and 5-star accommodation options. There's a tented camp and a series of well-appointed chalets, while the multiple-room guest houses are perfect for families or friends traveling together. For the last word in luxury, opt for a night in the exquisite Ambassador Suite. Overnight guests are invited to join a walking safari at sunrise, when the animals of the reserve are at their most active. The route to Inverdoorn takes you through the Cape Winelands ; consider stopping for a tasting along the way.

Sanbona Wildlife Reserve

From Cape Town, you can drive to Sanbona Wildlife Reserve in approximately three hours. Nestled at the foot of the Warmwaterberg Mountains, the reserve is a Klein Karoo paradise known for its indigenous wildlife and ancient rock art . Measuring some 54,000 hectares, it is also made special by its vast, sprawling landscapes. You'll find the Big Five here, as well as cheetah and smaller native mammals including the rare riverine rabbit. The wide range of activities on offer include birdwatching, nature walks, rock art tours, and stargazing. Boat safaris on Bellair Dam offer a different game-viewing perspective.

Since game drives take place at sunrise and sunset, most visitors to Sanbona Wildlife Reserve opt to stay overnight. There are three luxury lodges to choose from, including a tented camp with spa baths, private decks, and a fine-dining restaurant. If you want to experience Africa at its most authentic, consider a walking safari with a stay at the back-to-basics Explorer Camp. A kids' program , childminding services, and a dedicated family lodge make this the ideal choice for those traveling with children.

Grootbos Private Nature Reserve

When you've ticked the Big Five off your bucket-list, consider taking a two-hour drive southeast of Cape Town to coastal  Grootbos Private Nature Reserve . Located at the meeting point of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans, the reserve is the ultimate destination for spotting the Marine Big Five: namely, great white sharks, southern right whales, bottlenose dolphins, African penguins, and Cape fur seals. The lodge offers coastal safaris in association with Dyer Island Cruises . Cage diving with great white sharks , whale-watching tours, horse-riding, nature walks, and botanical safaris are also offered.

The reserve, which measures 2,500 hectares, is home to almost 800 different plant species; 100 of which are endangered and six of which were discovered for the first time on site. Its protected milkwood forests are over 1,000 years old. In order to have enough time to explore its wonders, you can stay overnight either at the Garden Lodge, the Forest Lodge, or in a private luxury villa. Each eco-friendly option is designed to complement the reserve's incredible natural beauty. Amenities range from tranquil swimming pools to organic 5-star dining.

4 South African Safari Destinations You Can Get to from Cape Town

By Mary Holland

Aquila Private Game Reserve

With the launch of United Airlines’ new direct flight to Cape Town from Newark this December, getting to South Africa’s seaside city is becoming significantly less arduous. Previously, a trip to Cape Town usually involved a layover in Johannesburg , which meant travelers to South Africa would often split their time between Cape Town in the southwest and a safari in the Kruger National Park in the northeast. But just because you can now fly straight to Cape Town doesn’t mean you have to pick between a safari experience and a waterfront one. Travelers who are tight on time and vacation days can find great game-watching near Cape Town , where a number of wildlife and nature reserves offer excellent excursions. Bonus: they’re all malaria-free.

Sanbona Wildlife Reserve

Sanbona Wildlife Reserve , about 3.5 hours from Cape Town, is one of the only reserves in the world where free-roaming white lions can be spotted in the wild, alongside cheetahs, elephants, and zebras. Located in the arid Little Karoo at the base of the Warmwaterberg Mountains, the 143,000-acre reserve has four lodges to choose from (we recommend Dwyka Tented Lodge , a chic tented camp set in a rock amphitheater). With so much open space and so few lodges, Sanbona is the perfect place to disconnect.

Sanbona Wildlife Reserve Dwyka

A view of one of the four camps at Sanbona Wildlife Reserve

Aquila Private Game Reserve

If time is short, Aquila Private Game Reserve , a quick two-hour drive inland from Cape Town, offers visitors half- or full-day safaris. For a better chance of seeing the Big Five (that's lions, leopards, rhinos , elephants, and Cape buffalos), checking in overnight at the unfussy thatched Aquila Lodge is recommended. Visitors can also spend time with rehabilitated animals at the Animal Rescue Centre on the reserve.

Grootbos Private Nature Reserve

At Grootbos Private Nature Reserve, about two hours south along the coast, you won’t see lions or cheetahs. Instead, you’ll be immersed in flora and marine life. Located on 6,200 acres of flawless wilderness that runs along the coast towards Gansbaai, you'll want to spend a day or two here, as opposed to the quick Aquila trip. Guests staying at the reserve’s modern Forest Lodge can spot over 800 types of plant species (like proteas and other fynbos that can be found nowhere else on earth), as well as antelope and whales calving in the nearby bay (whale season is usually from June to November).

Gondwana Private Game Reserve

While Gondwana Private Game Reserve might be further afield (around four hours away from Cape Town), the picturesque drive along the coastal Garden Route is certainly part of the journey. Once there, guests can check into Kwena Lodge , a collection of modern huts, or the solar-powered tented camp , where you can glamp among the fynbos. Safari drives to see the Big Five are a highlight, but other fun activities on offer include mountain biking and hiking.

Best Safaris Near Cape Town

Cape Town, the city of sun-kissed beaches and magnificent mountains, also offers opportunities to embark on the adventure of a lifetime with a safari near Cape Town.

  • 19.38K views
  • ~ mins read

Any trip to South Africa is incomplete without a tour of Cape Town – the city of sun-kissed beaches and magnificent mountains. There are plenty of things to do in South Africa , and Cape Town has a lot to offer. For the ultimate holiday in the country, take a tour that offers the cosmopolitan experience of Cape Town combined with an unbeatable African bush safari in the famous Kruger National Park or one of the excellent game reserves or national parks around.

However, if flying to the country’s north-eastern end for a safari in Kruger is not feasible, you can still get the best of both worlds while in Cape Town. Although there is no comparison of the wilderness of the South African national parks to the more tamed safari destinations around Cape Town, the fact that a safari is possible just a few hours’ drive from the city is exciting and convenient. There are many opportunities to embark on the adventure of a lifetime with a safari near Cape Town.

Below we have listed the 7 best safaris near Cape Town in order of distance from the city. Some of these destinations also avail possibilities of sighting the Big 5 animals.

They have an on-site animal rescue center as well as leopard research facilities.

This reserve offers two safari tours daily, each lasting roughly 2–3 hours. One departs in the early morning and the other in the late afternoon, since these are the times the animals are the most active. On the tour, you are likely to spot four out of the Big 5; lions, rhinos, elephants, and buffalos. You can also see giraffes, zebras, various antelope species, and free-roaming cheetahs. Overnight guests are offered sunrise and sunset safaris along with a tour of the reptile center which houses 28 different snake species, Nile crocodiles, and tortoises.

  • Distance from Cape Town: 3 hours 40 minutes (350km) east of Cape Town in the village of Albertinia. It is possible to do as a day town from Cape Town, but it’s probably more comfortable to stay the night.
  • Accommodation available: Room options in the 3-star lodge range from standard rooms, to family and luxury suites, to honeymoon chalets. Full restaurant with terrace dining is on site.
  • Other activities: Families traveling with kids will love the 'Kids on Safari' option which allows children to explore and learn about the reserve under the guidance and supervisor of a field ranger. 3. Inverdoorn Game Reserve

Safari in Cape Town at Inverdoorn Game Reserve

As self-proclaimed “luxury” safari, Inverdoorn may not be the cheapest on the list, but it’s certainly one of the most catered and comfortable. The reserve sits on 10,000 hectares in the arid Klein Karoo region. The grounds teem with birds and wildlife, including the Big 5, giraffes, zebras, hippos, impalas, springboks, and more. Inversdoorn is one of the most popular safaris in South Africa due to the high level of service provided by the staff and proximity to Cape Town.

Inverdoorn goes to great lengths to protect and preserve the animals that call their reserve home. RhinoProtect, a pricey security and research program specifically designed for the reserve’s resident rhinos, goes above and beyond to keep the animals safe from poachers. The Cheetah Sanctuary is another highlight. Visitors can view the fastest animal on earth partaking in running exercises that ready them for their release into their natural environment on the reserve.

  • Distance from Cape Town: 2 hours 30 minutes (200km) northeast of Cape Town in Breede River.
  • Accommodation available: The 3-star Izibi Safari Lodge has stylish guest houses, up-scale chalets, and posh suites. Relaxation is the name of the game here with first-class culinary dining and poolside lounging.

Sanbona is the biggest reserve on the list with 58,000 sprawling hectares. Situated at the foot of the Warmwaterberg Mountains, the impressive landscape and some unique and rare wildlife are what sets Sanbona apart from the others. Another unique selling point is the ancient rock art that can be viewed in the reserve. Dating back 3,500 years, the fascinating drawings depict the rituals and spiritual beliefs of the ancient tribes, the San and the Khoi-Khoi.

Safaris take place at sunrise and sunset and last for roughly 3 hours. Visitors can experience multiple landscapes and habitats as well as the chance to see the Big 5, iconic white lions, cheetahs, and rare riverine rabbit. Sanbona also offers boat safaris, creating a new and innovative way to tour the reserve.

  • Distance from Cape Town: 3 hours 15 minutes (256km) east of Cape Town in the town of Montagu. Unfortunately, due to the sheer size of the reserve, the establishment doesn't entertain day trips. Hence, spending the night is mandatory.

  • Other activities: Birdwatching, walking and hiking trails, rock art tours, and one of the best stargazing in South Africa. For those traveling with children, there’s a kids program that caters to little ones’ interests while educating them on the importance of conservation.

The Best Safaris Near Cape Town

south africa safari near cape town

With both leafy suburbs and glossy skyscrapers wrapped around Table Mountain, Cape Town is a city that manages to hypnotize guests with its whimsical charm and progressive energy. Situated at the southern tip of Africa, the city offers unlimited options for travelers looking to fill their days with activities. Whether it’s winetasting or watersports, you won’t need to go far to immerse yourself in idyllic life as a local. Although Cape Town offers a treasure trove of centrally-located things to do, South Africa’s spectacular wildlife is best experienced beyond the pristine peninsula.  At Extraordinary Journeys, we encourage travelers to spend a few days against the backdrop of the Indian and Atlantic oceans heading to South Africa’s finest safaris from Cape Town .

The Greater Kruger National Park is one of South Africa’s most iconic safari destinations. Known for its abundance of big game and diverse birdlife (over 500 species), it has earned its stripes amongst nature enthusiasts. With a direct flight from Cape Town in the south to Limpopo and Mpumalanga in the northernmost part of the country, it’s a surprisingly quick and convenient way to go on safari from Cape Town .

Once your two-hour flight touches the tarmac, it’s a short 40-minute and 50-min transfer to two of the Kruger’s most sought-after safari lodges.

Saseka Tented Camp

south africa safari near cape town

Catch your mid-morning flight from Cape Town International Airport to Hoedspruit, and you’ll reach Saseka Tented Cape in time for a delicious salad-bowl lunch overlooking Thornybush Private Nature Reserve . Set within the Greater Kruger National Park, Saseka Tented Camp is a superb choice for couples and honeymooners looking for an ultra-luxurious and polished safari experience near Cape Town .

Families and small groups aren’t left out in the cold either.  Little Saseka is a spacious sole-use tented suite with high-end furnishings and antique African-inspired decor. It provides the perfect platform to enjoy an exclusive take-over with a bonus of your own private chef and game-viewing vehicle.

Sabi Sabi Earth Lodge

south africa safari near cape town

Experience the safari of tomorrow at Sabi Sabi Earth Lodge in Sabi Sands, an avant-garde property set within the southwestern area of the Greater Kruger National Park. A two-hour flight from Cape Town to Skukuza, followed by a 50-minute transfer, will see you welcomed at this new-age lodge with warmed towels and even warmer smiles by noon.

Situated in the heart of the world-famous national reserve, Earth Lodge has a revolutionary yet discerning aesthetic that doesn’t compromise the splendor of a traditional safari. Where there is water, there is wildlife, and this private concession occupies prime property at the junction of the Sabie and Sand Rivers, a magnet for all creatures, great and small.

Eastern Cape

The lesser-known Eastern Cape province of South Africa is often overlooked in favor of more customary or recognizable luxury locations. Lying roughly 477 miles from Cape Town , this safari region offers significant benefits to travelers looking to kick off their bushveld break from the Mother City. Not only is the Eastern Cape closer to Cape Town, but it’s also malaria-free, making it the ideal destination for guests looking to spend less time in transit, particularly those with young children. The province boasts several private game reserves, a few of which our team recently visited. Besides teeming with Big Five game and various antelope, here are more reasons to visit these top Eastern Cape safaris near Cape Town .

Kwandwe Private Game Reserve

south africa safari near cape town

Situated on 22,000 hectares of aloe and spekboom-carpeted land, Kwandwe is a large reserve with intimate appeal. The short one-hour and 30-minute flight from Cape Town to Gqeberha (formerly known as Port Elizabeth) is followed by a comfortable drive of roughly the same duration. Thanks to a tarred Category 3 private airstrip, guests also have the option to charter a direct flight from Cape Town to the reserve and touch down in tranquility.

Extensive accommodation options make Kwandwe an attractive safari destination for couples, families, and friends traveling on safari from Cape Town . Nine intimate suites, each with its own private plunge pools, let couples staying at Great Fish River Lodge enjoy a personal safari experience in the company of like-minded guests. Further onto the expansive wilderness, properties like the sophisticated Melton Manor and charming Uplands Homestead allow guests traveling with children to be harmonious with nature—and each other.

Shamwari Riverdene Family Lodge

south africa safari near cape town

You may know Shamwari from its self-titled Netflix documentary—Shamwari Untamed—a docu-series which takes viewers behind the guest-facing curtain of conservation on the 25,000-hectare property.

Just an hour by road from the port city of Gqeberha, Riverdene Family Lodge is where children—and parents—can enjoy an ‘untamed’ vacation of their own. Shamwari’s Kids on Safari Adventure Centre gives little ones a chance to run as wild as the Big Five in a mind-blowing outdoor play park.

Kid-focused guides ensure that young minds are enriched, while visits to the Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre and Born Free Big Cat Rescue and Education Centre foster their compassionate and conservation-focused spirits from small. Riverdene Family Lodge is an exceptional holiday destination where both the young and young at heart are as free as the wildlife that roams the reserve.

HillsNek Safari Camp, Amakhala Game Reserve

south africa safari near cape town

With just 30 miles separating Amakhala Private Game Reserve from Shamwari, it’s easy to see why the Greater Addo region of the Eastern Cape is considered safari-central. HillsNek is an intimate camp where you and your loved ones are welcomed as family. Each of the four luxury safari tents has raised wrap-around wooden decks from where you can take in uninterrupted views of the indigenous Eastern Cape wilderness.

But these panoramic views serve as just an appetizer for the magic that Amakhala serves up. In addition to bush walks and twice-daily game drives, boat cruises along the Bushman’s River, the lifeblood of the reserve, propel you from land to water-based game viewing. Nature enthusiasts will also love the chance to survey antelope, zebra, and giraffes at eye level on a horseback safari. At HillsNek Safari Camp , it’s not only the short transit from Cape Town that will make you feel closer to nature but the authentic Amakhala ambiance itself.

Southern Kalahari

South Africa is a land of contrasts, and the southern Kalahari is proof of the patchwork of panoramas within its borders. This semi-arid desert dominates Botswana, eastern Namibia and stretches down into the northernmost part of South Africa. Despite poor rainfall and extreme temperatures, the sandy savannah is rich with wildlife, from meerkats and black-maned lions to wildebeest and African wild dogs.

Despite the remoteness, guests can expedite their arrival at the region’s signature property, one of the best safaris in South Africa , thanks to a two-hour direct charter flight from Cape Town with ExecuJet Aviation.

Tswalu Kalahari Reserve

south africa safari near cape town

At 111,000 hectares, Tswalu is South Africa’s largest privately-owned reserve. Accommodating only 40 guests in three high-end safari camps, this exclusive property boasts one of the lowest guest-to-wilderness ratios in the country.

Unlike other properties of its caliber, you’re granted a private vehicle, guide, and tracker for the duration of your stay, regardless of the camp you’re booked at. Activities are as diverse as the dramatic landscape: spend a morning watching habituated meerkats bask in the warming sun, join a guide on foot in search of African Rock Pipit, or hop on board a specialized photographic safari vehicle to capture wildlife against the striking backdrop of brick-shaded dunes.

Guests anticipate the evening dining experience with even more enthusiasm (and patience) as catching sight of an elusive brown hyena on a game drive. Restaurant Klein JAN is the creation of South Africa-born Michelin star chef Jan Hendrik van der Westhuizen. This destination kitchen, strategically camouflaged with its natural surroundings,  is part of what draws guests from all corners of the globe to this isolated yet wondrous savannah

What’s the best safari from Cape Town?

The country’s reliable flight schedule and fair road network make South Africa ‘s best safari destinations easily accessible from Cape Town . Whether you choose to spend time at the Eastern Cape’s top trio of properties or travel further north to Tswalu and the selection of private concessions within the Greater Kruger National Park, the short travel distance from Cape Town will encourage you to add a few more nights to your South Africa itinerary.

Situated along Route 62, in the arid Warmwaterberg Mountains of the Klein Karoo region, Sanbona is not only luxurious in its accommodation options, but also environmentally-friendly. Sanbona Safari Packages

South africa holiday, 10 days – from $4500.

For this memorable South Africa holiday, we have combined staying in Cape Town with a malaria-free Big-5 game safari, not far from Cape Town too, plus some fantastic activities that are unique to the area including a helicopter flight over the Cape Peninsula and wine tasting at a wine farm. 5* hotels and lodge for this luxurious stay.

Introducing the Sanbona Safari Lodges

The old farmhouse, Tilney Manor, consists of six spacious open plan suites, styled to the needs of the modern traveller in muted tones, each of which has its own private veranda. Similar in style is the thatched Gondwana Family Lodge, made up of suites of interconnecting rooms ideal for families. With a nod to this, there’s a children’s playroom inside, and another play area outside, along with a child-friendly pool.

Nine luxury tents make up the year-round Dwyka Camp, with a further location, the Explorers Camp, available during the summer months of October to April. Dwyka’s tents offer an incredible array of facilities, from en suite bathrooms to heated Jacuzzis with decked area, while the Explorers Camp is a little more basic, with shared bathroom facilities, for those looking to experience the Little Karoo in greater depth.

Tilney Manor

Sanbona’s turn of the century farmhouse, Tilney Manor, has been fully and luxuriously renovated to provide six airy open plan suites complete with private verandas looking out onto the stunning Karoo mountain landscape and indigenous garden.

Tilney Manor

The richly decorated suites expertly echo the peace and tranquillity they seek to provide, allowing guests total relaxation between game drives and activities, whether from the outdoor dining facilities, shared therapy rooms, or the wooden deck that encloses the rim-full pool.

Dwyka Tented Camp

Magically blended into the surrounding landscape in a horseshoe-shaped bend in a dry riverbed for a truly authentic yet secluded ambiance. Tranquillity is taken to another level at the Relaxation Retreat, while a splendid boma provides a shared space in which to dine and share stories across the campfire.

Dwyka Tented Camp comprises just nine luxury canopies. While seven of the nine are furnished with king-sized beds (the remaining two offer twin accommodation), each has amenities that make a stay more than special – such as the private deck areas and heated Jacuzzis in addition to indoor and outdoor showers.

Gondwana Family Lodge

This spacious thatched lodge has incredible views across to the Anysberg Mountains and over the Bellair Dam, while providing families and groups all the comforts of the modern world inside.

GONDWANA FAMILY LODGE

The 12 authentically styled suite of rooms are interconnecting, while children are specifically catered for in the indoor and outdoor play areas as well as the child-friendly pool, ensuring the whole family can make the most of this stunning setting.

Explorers Camp

The fully-qualified guides that lead the walk are there to point out the smallest of details while leading the two-day trail. The camp can be experienced between South Africa’s summer months of October and April, with departures every Friday.

Part of a walking tour that explores the lesser visited areas of the Karoo, this season camp is made up of luxury tents on a shaded riverbed using shared bathroom facilities.

Shared Spaces

An indigenous garden of endemic plants adds color and interest to Sanbona’s proximity, while the rim-full swimming pool and lounge area is a perennial favorite with guests. To take full advantage of the reserve’s five-star experience guests can also opt for spa sessions at Relaxation Retreat, while a boma provides a shared space in which to dine outdoors and share stories of the day’s adventures with fellow guests.

Safari Experience

The 58,000 hectares that make up Sanbona provide ample space for all the region’s wildlife. The expertise of the trained guides means guests are sure to experience the wonder of encountering majestic elephant and regal lion, to mention just two species, within their natural habitats, a guarantee that is hard to match in larger game reserves.

Sanbona Near Cape Town

There are daily game drives taking in the reserve in search of its free roaming animals, as well as nature walks through the surrounding bushveld, a particular highlight for bird lovers of all ages. Learn more about the night sky around the campfire as night falls, and then jump into a boat for a very special waterborne safari come daybreak.

Aquila Game Reserve, Cape Town

Aquila Safari Reviews

Aquila Private Game Reserve has a 3.5-star rating on Tripadvisor with over 350 excellent reviews and over 200 very good reviews from a total of over 950 reviews.

Even though Aquila is lauded for its excellent service and sustainability (in terms of social responsibility, wildlife conservation, and energy efficiency) some visitors rate it poorly.

Many visitors who rate Aquila poorly say the game reserve is too much like a zoo. It is important to note that this is a relatively new and small game reserve.

If you expect the quintessential rolling grasslands of Africa when you visit Aquila, you are likely to be disappointed.

The game reserve is ideal for first-time safari-goers, travellers with limited time, and budget travellers who want to see African animals in the bush, instead of in zoo cages.

To get a better sense of what Aquila is like, visit Aquila on Facebook and Aquila on Instagram .

2. Inverdoorn Game Reserve

Inverdoorn is an excellent Big 5 safari option for two reasons: the proximity of the game reserve to Cape Town and its relatively large size. The 2.5-to-3-hour drive from Cape Town makes Inverdoorn Game Reserve easily accessible for an overnight safari or weekend getaway.

Safari activities at Inverdoorn include morning and afternoon 4x4 game drives, guided bush walks with giraffes (depending on conditions), visits to the Cheetah Rescue & Rehabilitation Centre (no animal interactions allowed), and stargazing in the Klein Karoo.

For families with young children, Inverdoorn offers babysitting services and welcomes guests with kids at their 4-star lodges. Children over the age of 4 years are allowed on game drives.

Inverdoorn Game Reserve is not open to day visitors and self-drive safaris are not permitted. This limits your options somewhat but it also makes the safari experience in Inverdoorn more exclusive and crowd-free.

For this reason, Inverdoorn is not the cheapest Cape Town safari destination, but the quality of the Big 5 safari experience in Inverdoorn Game Reserve is worth the little extra spend.

The Cape Town Safari Experience

Cape Town is situated in the Western Cape Province of South Africa, with the Atlantic Ocean along the western shoreline and the Indian Ocean to the east. The climate is distinctly Mediterranean and the region is home to the unique fynbos biome which boasts incredible biodiversity found nowhere else in the world.

Whilst spectacular in its own right, the Cape Peninsula is very different from the typical African savannah that your average lion would generally call home. The Western Cape of South Africa is better known for its rich marine life and fynbos. This coastal region (in and around Cape Town) is a global hotspot for viewing the  Marine Big 5 animals  (whale, shark, seal, penguin, and dolphin) in the wild. The Western Cape is also home to over 500 species of birds, including 42 of South Africa's 53 endemic bird species.

Reflections on our first safari near cape town.

Last updated: 2 September 2023

Updated 15 April 2023. If you’re planning a visit to South Africa for the first time and looking to experience something truly epic then you can’t go past a safari near Cape Town on South Africa’s Western Cape. The memory of what we saw and experienced during our safari still stays with us today and we hope that the below article explains all the reasons why.

Choosing a Game Reserve near Cape Town

Juggling full time work and our busy schedules meant that for our trip to Cape Town we only had 11 days, including travel days and a multi-day wedding, to explore the Western Cape. As much as I wanted to discover Kruger National Park near Johannesburg or Addo Elephant Park near Port Elizabeth doing so would be at the expense of discovering Cape Town. It just wasn’t going to happen this trip.

Baby rhino at Aquila Safari near Cape Town

So we went in search of a safari  near Cape Town, something that was located only a few hours drive away to fit in with our other plans to discover the region. This being our first safari, there was a convenience factor of game reserves near Cape Town would provide a good introduction and a chance to spot the Big Five.

There are numerous game reserves on the Western Cape so finding one that suits your needs and budget is important. The not-so-good news is that the game parks close to Cape Town are generally smaller with less diversity and numbers than the more famous game reserves of Mpumalanga and Limpopo on South Africa’s Eastern Cape.

Nevertheless, there is a silver lining that game parks in the Western Cape are all malaria free, unlike Kruger National Park and many of the bigger reserves which come with a higher risk in malaria season.

I always appreciate local intel and a recommendation from a friend, even better when it’s both! The bride for the wedding we were attending is Capetonian, so we heeded her advice and spent one night at the Aquila Private Game Reserve.

If you’re looking for a day trip from Cape Town to the Aquila Game Reserve without staying overnight then this might be a good option for your trip.

Safari at Aquila Private Game Reserve near Cape Town

Just two hours by car we found ourselves at Aquila. We booked a one-night safari in a luxury cottage, which included 2 game drives (one afternoon, and one at dawn), meals of lunch, dinner & breakfast noting this isn’t all-inclusive as any drinks needed to be paid for.

Facilities at Aquila included two swimming pools, one with a swim-up-bar, day spa, gift shop and children’s area.

Elephants at Aquila Safari near Cape Town

The check-in process was a civilized affair at a permanent open-air building constructed from wood, stone and a thatched roof. We arrived promptly at noon when check-in opened, keen to discover what safari was all about. The process was relatively seamless with a complimentary glass of South African sparkling wine or sparkling apple juice upon arrival and the usual forms to complete. Rooms weren’t available until 2pm so we headed over to the onsite restaurant for lunch.

Giraffe on the plain at Aquila Safari near Cape Town

Food at Aquila comes in the form of a buffet. A vast array of mixed salads, chafing dishes filled with hot options of curry, casserole and a carving station for roast meat. As smoking was permitted outside, we opted for an inside table beside the window, overlooking the pool and onto the reserve. In the distance we had our first glimpse of what was to come. Three giraffes made their way across the plain.

The little girl inside me squealed with delight. This wasn’t a dream, we were REALLY on safari!

Rooms at Aquila Private Game Reserve

Before long it’s 2pm and we grabbed the keys to our luxury cottage. We had some time to unpack before our afternoon sunset safari.

Our luxury cottage was a semi-detached bungalow with a thatched roof. There’s a private patio, a corner bath and a rather funky outdoor open-air rock shower. An elephant made from towels greeted us as we entered and it instantly brought a smile to my face. A safari had been on my bucket list for years and I loved every moment up to that point and the anticipation was only building for what was to come.

Room on the Karoo Cottage at Aquila Safari near Cape Town

Our patio overlooked the reserve. It had potential to be rather impressive with the patio providing a private view of these glorious animals in their own habitat although natural undulations in the earth mean we see nothing more than a small mound and trees so it feels oddly familiar, like the extended backyard of a mates house in Australia.

I grabbed a quick nap on our incredibly comfy bed and move Ellie , our towel elephant, to the side of the room. I don’t have the heart to unfold her.

Sunset Safari at Aquila Private Game Reserve

At check-in we were given a map of the grounds and told to meet at spot B for our safari.  As always, we’re very early and overly eager for what’s to follow. It didn’t occur to me at the time that 50 other people had the same idea and I became instantly anxious about how the process was to unfold with just one safari jeep in sight which seemed to seat 25. There was no orderly British queuing but rather a huddle of enthusiastic people all jostling to be first on.

More jeeps eventually turned up and all was right in the world.  Always conscious of my nausea I popped some of my trusty motion sickness tablets to keep the queasiness at bay, just in  case the safari route went completely off-road. I was to thank myself later for this!

Jeep on the plain at Aquila Safari near Cape Town

Our sunset game drive was a two-and-a-half hour adventure that would take us all around the reserve. I realised my knowledge of desert dwellers was hugely challenged by this experience, aside from the obvious of rhino, lions, hippos and giraffe, I really didn’t know what I should expect to see.

Lions yawning at Aquila Safari near Cape Town

We set off into the dry arid landscape of the reserve, and before long we’re up close and personal with some of the wildlife. First up was the reserves two resident elephants, a curious ostrich, a herd of springbok, eland, and wildebeest.

Wilderbeest on the plain at Aquila Safari near Cape Town

Russ and I sat together on one side of the jeep, and as the safari 4×4 approaches the animals. I expect the driver to spin it around to ensure that both sides of the jeep get a view of the wildlife, however this doesn’t happen. Despite having a large telephoto lens, I was frustrated I couldn’t get the shots I wanted, and the jeep jerks a lot over the bumpy rocky path, I was mentally thanking myself for my earlier pill popping otherwise I’d have been very green and feeling quite ill.

Further into the game drive we spotted rhinos in the distance and zebras, both of which we’re told we’ll see closer in the morning.

Springbok at Aquila Safari near Cape Town

About 90 minutes into the game drive, we stopped to get out at a dedicated purpose-built rest area for a drink. Drinks of alcoholic and soft drinks were provided along with some small sweet snacks. I must admit even the bathrooms were surprisingly modern for the middle of the desert. There’s not much to see or do at the rest stop, I sipped on my sparkling apple juice and people-watched as fellow visitors took photos in the afternoon sun.

Plain at Aquila Safari near Cape Town

We jumped back in our jeep and headed to our final stop as the sun began to set, we were off to the lion enclosure At Aquila, the pride of lions are segregated from the rest of the reserve with a fenced enclosure about ten percent of the total property size.

I was excited and really keen to see these glorious big cats in their own environment, as to date I’ve only ever seen them in a zoo. As is often typical, they’re lazy creatures and we found them resting and snoozing not far from our entry gate.

They seemed entirely unfazed by our intrusion into their sanctuary. Opening one eye or lifting their head to scope us out and nothing more. I don’t want to disturb them, but as we depart I hope they’ll be more active for our dawn safari the following morning.

Male lion at Aquila Safari near Cape Town

Returning to the camp our jeep pulled up nearby to our cottage. I dropped all my camera equipment off before we head to the main lodge in time for dinner.

It’s another buffet slightly bigger than that of lunch. Again much of the same, meat, salads, and a rather uninspiring dessert selection. There’s a cheese board which caught my eye and brought a smile to my face, but on closer inspection it’s less appealing with numerous flies crawling over it. I immediately lost my appetite and passed at the thought of my favourite savoury dessert being contaminated by flying insects.

After dinner there was stargazing offered on the front lawn. When I heard that they offered it, I expected the stars to be the brightest I’ve ever seen, with no light pollution from nearby cities or towns there’s nothing between us and the stars above. That is unless you’re unlucky like us and your night at Aquila coincides with thick cloud cover. The night of our stay there was nothing to see through the giant telescopes, so much for nothing between us and the stars above. Alas no stargazing for us.

We head back to our little cottage and called it a night before our early start the following day.

Giraffe at Aquila Safari near Cape Town

Dawn Safari at Aquila Private Game Reserve

It’s rare for me to be up early, especially before the sun rises. It has to be something pretty special, like a safari, to get me out of bed that early. So the next morning we’re up before sunrise for our second, and final, game drive.

Again there’s a large group of eager people milling about the assembly point for pick up. We’re offered granulated coffee which I just can’t stomach ever, let alone before dawn comes. I long for an espresso as I sit on a rock awaiting our 4×4 safari jeep.

Jeep at Aquila Safari near Cape Town

A similar crowd huddles together as the vehicles arrive. We’ve scored a different seat in the jeep, a few familiar faces from the day before and a different drive/guide who was quite obviously not as interested in providing us any detail about the landscape, animals, or the safari park, a retrogression from the previous day.

Jeep at Aquila Safari near Cape Town

In an attempt at being strategic, we chose the opposite side of the jeep from the previous day, thinking it would yield a better view of the wildlife. In actual fact, it did not. And the seat was noticeably smaller making it more challenging to swivel to get the shots I wanted, while Russ sat half on a metal bar throughout – not exactly comfortable over those rocky roads!

The wildlife was very active in the morning, rhinos, including the baby white rhino calf which was born in December 2018, were very curious by our presence and keen to play with one another and their mummas.

Baby rhinos at Aquila Safari near Cape Town

Our jeep stopped near a little lake on the property, not much to see at first glance until our driver spotted some hippos submerged in the water who proved to be quite elusive for the camera. Our driver got out of the vehicle, disturbing the still water of the lake to get some attention of the hippos.

Hippos at Aquila Safari near Cape Town

Our final stop for the dawn safari was back to the lion enclosure. To my delight they were slightly more active than the day before, rather than sleeping they’re engaging with one another, but ignoring us entirely.

Our morning game drive lasted 90 minutes although the discomfort from sitting on a metal bar made it feel like an age.

Jeep at Aquila Safari near Cape Town

Once we’re back at the base, it was time to pack our bags, have breakfast and check out.

Given the two uninspiring buffets we experienced so far, we didn’t bother with breakfast and quickly make our way back to Cape Town.

How to get to Aquila

I would highly recommend you hire a car when visiting the Western Cape. Discovering this region is easier and hassle-free with your own transfers. However if you don’t/can’t drive then there are some game reserves, like Aquila, which offer transfers from Cape Town.

Road near Aquila Safari near Cape Town

Activities other than Safari

In between game drives there is quite a bit of downtime. Those content to have a swim or read from sun chairs overlooking the reserve will be relaxed and calm, there is a day spa for offering treatments to up your relaxation.

For those seeking more lively activities, Aquila offers additional pursuits like horse riding or ATV/quad bike for those with a more generous schedule.

The Verdict

For our first safari there was a lot that was new in terms of experiences. The safari experience itself was amazing, I loved being able to see these animals in their natural environment at a safari near Cape Town without having to travel to the main game reserves on the Eastern Cape. Also, our luxury cottage accommodation was lovely, very private and quiet.

However, if you’re not staying at Aquila but interested in organising a day trip from Cape Town to the Aquila Game Reserve then that can be easily booked and organised .

Acknowledging this is my first safari experience, so I have nothing to compare it to, I found the food to be disappointing and, quite frankly, rather basic for a property that markets itself as four star. There is room for improvement here.

The size of the jeeps, the size of seats and those god-awful metal bars, the fact that they’re packed with people and the challenge to get the photos you desire does impact some of the ‘wow’ factor.

I will safari again because it was truly amazing seeing all the animals in their own environment, but I will ask more questions next time now that I have an understanding of what to expect on a safari adventure.

I also had a short time in South Africa and chose Aquila for its close proximity to Cape Town. I’m so glad I did. I had the most amazing time. 100% recommend.

Hey, Jenn. Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment, it’s much appreciated. We’re so glad that you were able to maximise your time in Cape Town and head to Aquila for a safari. Thrilled to hear that you had an amazing time too!!

How does it work that the lions were in their own ‘section’ – how do they feed them, or are smaller animals (food) in that area with them? I don’t really understand why they do this, it seems more like a safari park you could visit in the UK, than a reserve where the animals are free to come and go…

TBVH Katie, I wasn’t overly impressed by the segregation. We didn’t see the lions feasting so not 100% sure how they’re fed, I’d hope they hunt, but I can’t be sure. They looked pretty comfortable by the entrance gates and seem very unperturbed by our presence

Cape Town Travel Guide: Where To Stay, Eat Drink And Safari In The South African City

C ape Town is a cultural melting pot, increasingly celebrated for its art, food and fashion, as well as being a natural wonder, home to stunning scenery - mostly associated with the ever-dominating Table Mountain that looks out over the city - incredible land and ocean wildlife, which offer the opportunity to get up close with safari options and beautiful beaches just a stone's throw from the metropolis.

Though it is a 12-hour flight from London, it has just a one-hour time difference meaning that it is far enough away to feel like you're exploring somewhere totally different and yet there is no jet lag to acclimatise to. This makes it an ideal long-haul location , especially if you're wanting to escape when the temperatures drop in the UK and start heating up in Cape Town (the hottest months of the year are January to March). Plus, there's no visa requirements for UK citizens.

All in all, it's very straightforward as far as far-away adventures go. Unlike other long haul trips where you might opt for multi-destination holidays to justify the lengthy travel time, there isn’t the need to do this in Cape Town. It has everything - food, beach, nature, adventure and wine - all within a short radius.

Sold yet? You're not the only one. It’s no surprise that in the aftermath of the pandemic, people have flocked to the African city, with January to June 2023 exceeding pre-pandemic levels by 104%, welcoming 1.4 million international visitors. Most visitors come from the UK, with an estimated 70,000 British tourists opting for Cape Town as their holiday destination in the first four months of 2023 alone.

Here's everything you need to know, from hotels to restaurants to safari in Cape Town:

Hotels in Cape Town

The Silo Hotel

Found in the trendy V&A waterfront area of the city, this former grain factory offers stunning 360° views of Table Mountain to across the water of Robben Island. An ideal city hotel, the rooms have everything you need and its delicious breakfast is first-class, setting you up perfectly for a day of sightseeing and exploring. The rooftop sky terrace is a must-visit for guests. In the winter, enjoy the view while cosying up with a blanket and glass of wine from the bar. In the summer, make use of the pool, which can also be found up there.

As well as boasting its own art collection - you can also have a private guided art tour by their in-house resident expert - the hotel is found on top of the Zeitz Museum Of Contemporary Art Africa, which is home to a stunning collection of art from across South Africa and the continent.

The One & Only

The Cape Town edition of the luxury chain has more of a resort feel (some rooms are accessible via a bridge over the canal where a resident otter lives), which is a great choice for travellers who like to add an element of R&R to their city escape. The rooms are minimalist, but with clear African influences on its design, such as printed curtains, beaded ornaments and natural wood decor.

Outside of the room, you can unwind in the spa, found on its own man-made island, where a pre or post-flight massage is definitely encouraged or visit the resort's wine studio for a private wine tasting session by their own expert sommelier sampling the best wine in the Cape Town region, accompanied by a delicious charcuterie board. For dining, the all-day food and drink site, Vista Bar, sits directly opposite Table Mountain for unparalleled views. The One & Only also boasts a Nobu restaurant, which until recently was the only posting of the famed Japanese eatery on the continent (Chef Nobu and Robert De Niro opened up their second African restaurant in Marrakech in spring 2023). The concierge can help arrange activities with excursions, including whale watching, hikes and even shark dives offered.

Restaurants in Cape Town

Cape Town has really put itself on the map for its dining options in recent years, with a huge variety of restaurants. From modern takes on South African cuisine to full gastronomic experiences, the city has something for everyone. As a pescatarian, there's a huge amount of non-meat options, too. Plus, Ubers are a super reliable, cheap and easy way to navigate the city and fit in as many eateries as possible.

New for 2023 is Salon , the sister restaurant of the world-renowned Pot Luck Club (and found just one floor below), which offers incredible multi-course tasting menus based on all the places across the world where chef Luke Dale-Roberts has worked. Salon's take on the Singapore Chilli, Malaysian Laksa and twist on the traditional South African Malva pudding to finish off our dinner are highlights.

Another must-visit restaurant for a full multi-course and wine-paired culinary experience is the exclusive Salsify at the Roundhouse (recently named Africa's best landmark restaurant by the World Culinary Awards), whose setting overlooks Camps Bay in one direction (which is worth a visit in itself. Head to the beach just before sunset for stunning views of the ocean in this quaint surfer setting) and Lion's Head in the other. Salsify offers a lengthy ten-course chef's menu (we loved the line fish), where for every course one of the kitchen's chefs will bring it to your table and talk you through the dish.

For a lunch or dinner option in one of the cooler parts of the city, try the new spot Club Kloof . The Italian-inspired menu specialises in small plates with Mediterranean influence. We recommend the Mac and Cheese Arancino and Mozarella-Stuffed Pizza Fritta paired with an Aperol Spritz, of course. The brightly-tiled interiors make for a dreamy dining setting, too.

Speaking of interiors, Upper Union is another eatery where the food is elevated by the stylised decor of the building. In the heart of Cape Town’s Kloof Street district, it is an interiors lover's dream thanks to the emerald, black and gold modern twist on the traditional Victorian heritage building. At Upper Union, you can opt for the chef's menu of a big main meal with sides (headed up by chef Amori Burger) or a sharing-style menu. Whichever you choose, pair it with a cocktail from the mixologist's menu of bespoke drinks.

Day trips from Cape Town

There is so much to see and visit in Cape Town. So much so that you probably won't get to do it all. But here are some of the essentials that you should try to tick off if possible.

You will see Table Mountain wherever you go and should definitely try and get up there to view the Mother City from the best view possible. There are cable cars which go to and from Table Mountain and we recommend downloading the app to double check the cable cars are running as they don't if there is poor visibility or difficult weather conditions. If you'd prefer to hike, there are a variety of routes to take, differing in length and ability.

A hugely important trip from Cape Town is to Robben Island, where a ticket includes the ferry over to the island where former president and anti-apartheid leader Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for 27 years, along with countless other citizens who were held as political prisoners for their fight against the apartheid. The tour guides on Robben Island are former inmates, making the visit profoundly impactful as they present the squalid conditions where they were forced to sleep, eat and work, often with very limited outside visitation while being held under strict rules and regulations, including being forbidden from speaking to to other inmates. As well as seeing Mandela's cell, you are also shown the areas where he wrote (and hid around the prison) manuscripts for his memoir, Long Walk To Freedom.

Another day trip about an hour's drive away from the CBD (central business district) centre is the Cape of Good Hope, the most south-western point of the African continent. It's also where the Indian Ocean meets the Atlantic Ocean so be prepared for breathtaking scenery of lush green mountains and crashing waves on the pebbled beaches.

Have a pit stop at Kalk Bay en route to the Cape of Good Hope, for kitsch coffee shops and souvenir spots, as well as sampling the fish and chips on the waterfront before taking a stroll to where seals will be found happily sunbathing.

Another must-visit is Boulders Beach , home to the famous colony of African penguins. Adorable.

Vineyards near Cape Town

There's the option to spend day trips visiting some of the many vineyards in the nearby wine region (some are as close as 30 minutes away) or you can extend your stay with a night or two there. In which case, you will likely end up in the beautiful town of Stellenbosch.

We opted to spend a night at the majestic Lanzerac Estate, a five-star country hotel with traditional décor full of beautiful quirky china antiques. Surrounded by mountains with a grand tree-lined driveway, the estate is home to rows of lush vines. We recommend heading to the deli for a wine tasting session. Try a glass of the rosé pinotage, a cross between the Pinot Noir and Hermitage grape, which originated at Stellenbosch University.

For a gorgeous dining experience in Stellenbosch where, of course, the wine is just as good too (there are 130 bottles on offer), we recommend the appropriately named The Wine Glass restaurant.

Safari near Cape Town

Of course, safari is a must when heading to South Africa. While the more widely known Kruger National Park is located further north nearer Johannesburg and Pretoria, it's incorrect to assume there aren't beautiful safari options nearer Cape Town, too.

Gondwana game reserve is a four and a half hour drive away from Cape Town. It's an easy drive, essentially one straight long road once out of Cape Town (stop off at Tredici bakery in Swellendam en route).

Gondwana is home to the big five: lion, elephant, rhino, hippo and buffalo, as well as herds of zebra, impala, cheetah, giraffe, monkeys and more. Guests are usually taken out for a morning and late afternoon safari. Thanks to the incredibly knowledgeable and passionate safari guides, highlights range from seeing a baby rhino crossing the path with his mother, a herd of giraffes having their morning breakfast and a post-hunt pride of lions chomping on their prey.

Though it is centrally about the wildlife and ensuing unforgettable experiences you make, the experience of Gondwana is heightened by the luxury accommodation. There are a range of options for your stay, from Ulubisi House, the staffed three-bedroom private lodge with a private pool, to the Kwena Lodge suites with a shared pool, sky lights for stargazing, and a range of indoor and outdoor restaurants offering incredible food.
