Sue Smith Stable Tour

By Harry Walter

Sue Smith

There must be something in the air at Sue and Harvey Smith’s Craiglands Farm nearly 1,000 feet up on the edge of Baildon Moor near Bingley.

It’s not just the extraordinary pensioners in this windswept expanse of West Yorkshire moorland that keep coming back season after season but also a merry band of staying chasers who have a toughness and resolution instilled in them by what at times can be a harsh environment.

Survival of the fittest is the motto in these parts and fit horses are what you get with nearly three miles of all-weather gallop weaving its way through the rugged terrain.

The Smiths are patiently waiting for the soft ground many of their troops require and it is hoped some of the younger brigade can fill the void left by the retirement of 12-year-old Cloudy Too – who has been found a “wonderful home to go hunting” – and the injury setback to I Just Know, who looks likely to miss the rest of the season following a fall at Kelso on Saturday.

“We have a few horses for the novice chase category and although that might not win you as much money on a Saturday, hopefully they’ll become those types if not this season then the next,” says the trainer.

Smith racked up 40 winners and a little more than £600,000 in prize-money last term with Midnight Shadow capping a highly respectable campaign with victory in the Scottish Champion Hurdle .

“Hopefully we can have that and a little bit more this time,” Smith adds.

Midnight Shadow is being readied for a crack at the Greatwood Hurdle and ambitions of a second Grand National success for the stable rest with lionhearted chaser Vintage Clouds.

Absolutely Dylan

Five-year-old gelding

Scorpion (sire) – Cash Customer (dam)

Owner: Trevor Hemmings

Form figures: 32178-1

Racing Post Ratings: 108c Official rating: –

Made a smashing chase debut on his comeback at Sedgefield, jumping his rivals into submission. He’s quirky at home but did his job properly. He won over hurdles last season and then drifted away but has come back a man. We’ll find a novice handicap chase next and you’d think he’ll progress.

6g Black Sam Bellamy – Art Series

Jacqueline And John Conroy

RPR 119h OR 118h

Harvey bought him out of Emma Lavelle’s and he’s done smashing for us. He’s not the quickest and I’m not whether he’ll develop into a Saturday horse but he’s a scopey jumper who will keep finding for you. He’ll start out over fences at Sedgefield today.

BLACK ART

10g Presenting – Smashing Leader

Mrs Jacqueline Conroy

RPR 140c OR 123c

A fragile horse who only ran twice last season but has been sound this time. His comeback at Carlisle might have looked disappointing but he wants softer ground. He’s in very good order at the moment.

6g Westerner – Autumn Beauty

Trevor Hemmings

RPR 107c OR 120c

Won three novice hurdles last term and made his chasing debut at Carlisle over a trip probably a bit short. He needs to get his jumping together and it might take a bit longer to educate him but hopefully we’ll be able to step him up in class in time.

If I could sum up last season in one word . . .

Cracking Find

7g Robin Des Pres – Crack The Kicker

Mrs A Ellis

RPR 136c OR 129c

A consistent horse who is not overly big but is a fantastic jumper. He ran his heart out at Wetherby last time and hopefully he’ll be one for the better handicaps later on. His breeding suggests he wants good ground and his ideal trip looks to be 2m4f.

Delusionofgrandeur

8g Mahler – Olivia Rose

Mcgoldrick Racing 3

RPR 148c OR 140c

Pulled up in the Grand National but that’s not his cup of tea. He likes to bowl along in smaller fields and is at his best on a flat, galloping track. He’s a difficult horse to place due to his rating but is set to start off over 2m3½f at Wetherby on Friday. We might then look at the Anne Duchess of Westminster Chase at Bangor in two weeks.

De Vous A Moi

10g Sinndar – Dzinigane

Mrs J Morgan

RPR 141c OR 132c

The old boy has been a great servant, winning races every year. He loves Newcastle – he won there on his last start back in January – so we’ll look to head back there. We’re just waiting on the ground turning for him.

Hill Sixteen

5g Court Cave – Chasers Chic

RPR 90 (ptp) OR –

An exciting horse who won a point in Ireland. He’s a lovely model, a big scopey type who is going to be a stayer. We’ll run him first time over hurdles over 2m and he has entries at Wetherby and Carlisle this week, but we just need some rain.

Informateur

5g Maresca Sorrento – Isarella

Mrs J M Gray & G R Orchard

RPR 124h OR –

We were pleased with his first run back at Hexham when just beaten by a good horse in Simply The Betts. We’ll look for softer ground and find another novice hurdle over a similar two-mile trip. The penny has dropped and we’re looking forward to him.

Joke Dancer

5g Authorized – Missy Dancer

Mrs Aafke Clarke

RPR 128h OR 128h

Had a wind operation and won’t be out before Christmas. He won three times last season and you couldn’t ask for more from a horse that needed his wind doing. A big scopey type who jumps well, he should be a good horse to go novice chasing.

JOKE DANCER

Rival to watch

Dan Skelton. He goes everywhere in the search for winners and means business whenever he comes up north.

Just Georgie

8g Kayf Tara – Just Kate

Mrs M B Scholey

RPR 124c OR 117c

Won only one chase and has been a bit disappointing. He’s a full-brother to useful mare The Govaness, but hasn’t come to the fore quite like he could have done. He has got to have very soft ground.

Lough Derg Farmer

6g Presenting – Maryiver

Mrs S Smith

RPR – OR 128c

A lovely horse from the sales who showed good form for Nicky Henderson. I spoke to Nicky about him and he’s been A1 to train and jumps particularly well. He made his first start for us over hurdles but we’re switching to fences at Sedgefield today.

Lough Legend

4g Watar – Gibboghstown

Broadway Racing Club 15

RPR 111h OR –

A big horse who finished third in both his bumpers and returned with a good run over hurdles at Carlisle in a warm novice. He’s a big horse who looks sure to win this season.

Midnight Shadow

5g Midnight Legend – Holy Smoke

RPR 141h OR 141h

I think he’s very special. He won the Scottish Champion Hurdle having not long come out of novices and we were delighted with his comeback at Wetherby on ground that was possibly a bit fast for him. He’s come out of it very well and his next target is the Greatwood Hurdle at Cheltenham where we’re hoping for some rain. The idea is to keep him over hurdles and see if he can improve again. We’ll see how he fares in the Greatwood and then decide whether to stick to the plan or go chasing as he’s a very good jumper.

MIDNIGHT SHADOW

Notonebuttwo

11g Dushyantor – Daiquiri

Neil Taylor

RPR 92c OR 85c

An older horse for our conditional Kane to ride – he belongs to his family. He returned with a corking second at Hexham and then finished fourth at Bangor on Tuesday, where Kane said the trip was on the sharp side.

Oscar Wilde

4g Oscar – Deep Supreme

Formulated Polymer Products Ltd

RPR 72 (ptp) OR –

A huge horse for a four-year-old – he’s 17 hands. He has no form in his point-to-points but is coming along lovely. If he can run well over hurdles then he’s going to be a nice prospect for chasing next season.

Rare Clouds

4g Cloudings – Rare Vintage

A full-brother to Vintage Clouds bred by Trevor. He’s a feisty type who will bully his way through. We haven’t schooled him yet as he will possibly run in a bumper. He’s only four but we like him a lot.

4g Multiplex – Lemon Queen

Related to Son Of Flicka – a good horse for Donald McCain – and looks the type to run well in a bumper. We’re very pleased with him and he’ll be ready soon.

Sharp Response

7g Oscar – Lambourne Lace

RPR 140c OR 135c

A smart horse who has won over hurdles and fences. Everyone was very pleased with his win at Carlisle last week. Danny said he’s a lot more relaxed this year and he jumped particularly well. We’ll see what the handicapper does before deciding his next target, but he’s one to look forward to.

Silva Eclipse

5g Multiplex – Linen Line

RPR 124h OR 122h

Bred similarly to Stagecoach Pearl and Rattlin, who both did well for us. He’s a stayer who should take to fences but we’ll stick to hurdles for now. He’s in grand order and just wants some rain.

Race in focus

The Grand National is the target for Vintage Clouds, who narrowly missed the cut last season. We’ve won it once and we’d like to win it again.

Straidnahanna

9g Medaaly – Sue’s Song

RPR 142c OR 135c

Pulled up for the third time in the Scottish National and I doubt we’ll go for that again. He’s a sensitive horse who is not suited to big fields. You can take him anywhere but he does love Catterick – he’s unbeaten in four starts there. He’s in good form and will be out soon.

Thelongwayaround

5g Fruits Of Love – Brass Neck

RPR 93h OR –

A new purchase from the Doncaster sales, he’s a lovely, big horse who will be a chaser in time. He won a point-to-point over 3m but we started over 2m at Kelso last Saturday. He acted well on the better ground and jumped pretty good, so we were very pleased with him.

5g Gold Away – Didn’t I Tell You

D G Pryde & D Van Der Hoeven

RPR 125c OR 121c

An exciting horse to go over fences with. He was in need of his run at Carlisle last week but performed well and jumped great. He’ll come on an awful lot for it and should improve next time out. He’s a big, bold jumper and we think quite highly of him.

10g Kendor – Village Rainbow

RPR 136c OR 130c

Coming back following an injury after he struck into himself when just beaten by The Dutchman in a novice chase at Wetherby in November 2016. Danny’s keen to continue chasing and he’ll definitely win some races if the old legs stand up.

Star quality

Vintage Clouds

8g Cloudings – Rare Vintage

RPR 149c OR 143c

Missed the Grand National by one spot but it could be a blessing in disguise as I think he’s really ready now to go and contest the big one. A grand jumper who always gives you his very best, he did us proud last season finishing placed in most of the major staying chases. He just gave a cough or two but he’s back into full work now and we’re waiting for some softer ground. Trevor likes to go to the Welsh National so that is a possibility but we need to find a nice race for him beforehand. Hopefully he can win a good staying handicap and go up the weights, and then it will be on to Aintree.

VINTAGE CLOUDS

9g Westerner – Chanson Indienne

M B Scholey & The Late R H Scholey

RPR 157c OR 148c

A tiny horse with a big heart. Finds life hard as everywhere he goes he has to lug around topweight. A cracking jumper, he likes flat, galloping tracks and won the Sky Bet Chase at Doncaster last term after just being beaten in the Rowland Meyrick at Wetherby . He’ll have a similar campaign and we’re waiting for softer ground.

What’s The Scoop

8g Presenting – Dame D’Harvard

RPR 119c OR 123c

Harvey paid a goodly sum [£32,000] at the sales and he came from Nicky Henderson’s yard. He’s known for trying to run off the course at Sandown but he ran lovely for us back in February. He picked up a little knee injury but is back now. He’s a cracking prospect.

Saturday racing tips: Five horses to follow on Sky Sports Racing at Newcastle, Doncaster and Hereford

Four meetings to follow on Sky Sports Racing this Saturday with action from Doncaster, Hereford, Newcastle and Wolverhampton; watch every race live from 11.40am

Friday 15 December 2023 19:08, UK

Rare Edition impressed in victory at Kempton on Boxing Day

Senior form analyst Jamie Lynch reveals his runners to keep onside from Doncaster, Hereford and Newcastle, all live on Sky Sports Racing this Saturday.

1.20 - Newcastle

The Frankel in Franberri is starting to come out, that and lessons learnt from last time the reasons why she can reverse form with Quantum Cat, beyond the 2 lb turnaround at the weights.

Each of her last three furlongs were faster than Quantam Cat's, but the game was already done, dropped out off a steady pace, on top of her lingering naivety, just four races into a career which only began in August.

Jack Mitchell, who won on her at this track earlier in November, is back aboard now and no rider has a better strike-rate than him at Newcastle (22 per cent) in the last three years.

The worry, looking at the likely pace, is that there again won't be much of a gallop, but that's where Mitchell's nous comes into play, along with Franberri's hardening experience edges. A mark of 79 won't be anything like her limit.

Cerendipity

2.05 - Doncaster

Full racecards

Watch racing live on Sky Sports

A corner turned for the Sue Smith stable was marked by Cerendipity at Wetherby, as there has been a further four winners (and two seconds) from a handful of runners since, a crest of a wave which Cerendipity can continue to ride, basically just getting going in life.

He needed this trip of 19 furlongs to win as a hurdler so it's reasonable to assume he'll improve a lot rather than a little for returning to it now, following his last-time win that probably wasn't so workmanlike as it looked, especially as the 'two-mile' distance at Wetherby is much closer to 15 furlongs than 16.

A big horse who has been minded in his early days, Cerendipity is the sort of classic Sue Smith chaser who'll keep finding in races and in ratings for a while yet.

Western Zephyr

2.13 - Hereford

His two goes over fences so far, both on stiff tracks, have been in races that have been 4.06 minutes and 4.04 minutes in their completion: this one on good ground at Hereford will be sub-4 minutes, a decisive difference to him.

All three of his hurdling wins were in contests that took between 5 and 15 seconds less than 4 minutes, and so it was a bit of a surprise that Carlisle and Sandown were chosen for his first phase of chasing, 13 lengths clear of the rest when giving Xcitations a race latterly.

Whizzing around Hereford will be right up his street and, even with top-weight, he should be too good for this lot.

Rare Edition

2.40 - Doncaster

The Grade 1s passed him by in a blur at the Cheltenham and Aintree Festivals, but it meant that no damage was done to his mark, a mark (of 136) for his handicap debut which looks lenient based on his Boxing Day defeat of Rubaud, now rated 149.

It wasn't even close between them at Kempton, seven lengths the margin at the line, in a time only 1.7 seconds slower than Constitution Hill in the Christmas Hurdle a couple of hours later.

He's still in the deep end in the sense goes straight into a well-contested handicap for his reappearance, but he won first time out in both his previous seasons, plus he's 1/1 at Doncaster, and Bradley Roberts effectively reduces his mark to 131, which undersells him by some way.

Bertie Wooster

2.48 - Hereford

This is his first marathon, but it might be what Bertie Wooster has wanted all along, still a maiden but placed in every handicap he's contested and going closest last time over the longest trip he's tackled, here at Hereford.

A strong finish saw him beaten just a nose by the thriving Mactavish, the pair some 26 lengths clear of the rest, leaving the handicapper little option but to put him up another 6 lb, maybe insufficient, and he still gets 4 lb in the handicap from Norton Hill.

The same day at Hereford, Norton Hill won over this distance, though neither his jumping nor the time were impressive, and Bertie Wooster may be in the right place at the right time for once.

SUE SMITH STABLE TOUR

Here’s a great piece about SUE SMITH and what she has in store for her string

It has been yet another highly productive season so far for Sue Smith and husband Harvey at Craiglands Farm in Bingley with 34 winners to date and the not inconsiderable total of over £445,000 in prize money.

Chief contributor has been the rising star Wakanda who won three listed handicap chases including the £100,000 Sodexo Silver Cup at Ascot and looks in the mould of the likes of The Last Fling, Mr McGoldrick and Grand National winner Auroras Encore who all had the established Smith badge of progress and longetivity.

Lackamon has shown his love of longetivity with the landmark 1000th success for the stable when landing the North Yorkshire Grand National at Catterick last month and Cloudy Too put himself in the mix for a possible second Aintree National success for the stable when making his mark in the Peter Marsh Chase at Haydock.

Delusionofgrandeur looks the type the stable will excel with in long distance chases in the future and with the likes of Vendor and Smooth Stepper at her disposal there looks plenty of more exciting days ahead for Sue and her team.

Sue said: “We are pleased with the way the season has been going. We don’t have a huge amount of horses but they have all been going along quite nicely and we hope that continues as it has been.”

Sue kindly spoke to Tony Elves of ATR about the horses she will have in action in the next few months.

ABSOLUTE 5 b g Danehill Dancer – Beyond Belief Placed in two of his 3 starts in novice hurdles. Finished runner-up, beaten 18 lengths, to Master Jake at Hexham (2m) in November. “He is a little horse Harvey bought off the Flat. We have had a few issues with his feet and things but he is about ready to go but the handicapper hasn’t given him a mark yet.”

BENNYS WELL 10 b g Beneficial – Alure Winner of six of his 41 starts. Finished third, beaten 17 lengths, to My Friend George off his current mark of 104 over fences at Sedgefield (2m 5f) this month. “He hasn’t run a lot this Winter purely as a result of the ground. We ran him at Sedgefield recently and he finished third over a trip a little bit short of his best but the old lads in great form and we will crack on with him now. He is a nice horse for the local meeting like Sedgefield and Hexham – he can handle soft ground but he needs it a fraction better than very heavy ground.”

BLAKEMOUNT 8 br g Presenting – Smashing Leader Winner of two of his 8 starts. Third in two chases this season at Carlisle (3m 1/2f) in November at Kelso (2m 7 1/2f) beaten five and three quarter length by One For Arthur. Currently rated 132 over fences. “He just had a small wind operation which is why he hasn’t been out. He is about ready to roll now there is a possibility I might give him a run over hurdles at Carlisle next meeting then he will be back chasing.”

CLOUDY TOO 10 b g Cloudings – Curra Citizen Winner of eight of his 32 starts. Returned to form with a vengeance in the Grade 2 Peter Marsh Chase at Haydock (3m) in January when slamming Virak 15 lengths off a mark of 139. Currently rated 149 over fences. “He won the Peter Marsh at Haydock well and I do have him entered in the Grand National Trial at Haydock but I’m not sure he goes yet. He is in good form and he loves this heavy ground. He has to have soft ground and loves these long distance staying chases.”

DARTRFORD WARBLER 9 b/br g Overbury – Stony View Winner of six of his 28 starts. Runner-up, beaten eight lengths, to Cultram Abbey in a handicap chase at Wetherby (2m 3 1/2f) in January off his current mark of 122. “He has gone really well this season and won over hurdles and fences. He ran a very good race down at Ascot where the ground was just a bit lively for him and just short of his trip. We ran him again at Wetherby the meeting before last and he finished second and will be out again soon.”

DE BOITRON 12 b g Sassanian – Pondiki Winner of eight of his 56 starts. Best effort this term in a handicap hurdle at Haydock (1m 7 1/2f) in November when third, beaten seven and three quarter lengths, to Baby King off a mark of 125. Currently rated 129 over fences and 122 over hurdles. “He has been a good old servant and he had one run over hurdles and ran quite well. We are just waiting for a fraction better ground for him and he wants that ground over fences. He is going to alternate between hurdles and fences when the ground settles down a little bit but he is in very good form.”

DELUSIONOFGRANDEUR 6 b g Mahler – Olivia Rose Winner of two of his 6 starts. Beaten only two lengths when third to O O Seven in the Albert Bartlett Scottish Trial (Novices Hurdle) at Musselburgh (3m) this month. Currently rated 133 over hurdles. “He has been a smashing horse this season and I think he could have been a lot closer to them at Musselburgh the other day if it had been a bit stiffer track. He has done nothing wrong and we don’t have an out and out target as, again, he wants softish ground. He is going to be a smashing chaser next season.”

DE VOUS A MOI 8 b g Sinndar – Dzinigane Winner of three of his 21 starts. Scored by six lengths from Indian Temple in a handicap chase at Wetherby (2m 3 1/2f) in November when last seen out. Currently rated 130 over fences. “He went really well and won at Wetherby in November and has a small problem which we have had to give him time for. He is back on track and he will probably be out in another three weeks. We will keep him in novice handicaps this season.”

FLEMERINA 7 b m Flemensfirth – Ballerina Laura Winner of one of his 6 starts. Off the mark at Sedgefield (2m 1f) in January when beating Question Of Faith half a length of a mark of 86. Currently rated 91 over hurdles. “She won last time out at Sedgefield and she doesn’t mind a bit of soft ground. A trip is what she has been wanting and she seems to be improving into a nice mare.”

FRIENDLY ROYAL 7 b g Royal Anthem – Friendly Girl Winner of two of his 12 starts. Successful in a novices handicap chase at Hexham (2m 4f) in October off a mark of 100 and at Uttoxeter (2m 6 1/2f) in November off a mark of 106. Currently rated 122 over fences. “We could never have a lot of luck with him over hurdles but since he has gone over fences he has run really really well. I am very pleased with him and at Wetherby we upped him in grade and it was just short of his trip. He wants a step up to 2m 6f/three miles and we will see him to good effect again.”

GLENCOUNTESS 9 b m Pilsudski – Countessdee Winner of seven of her 25 starts. Last success at Haydock (2m 3f) in May off a mark of 115. Pulled up in a handicap chase at Wetherby (3m) last week off current mark of 120 over fences. “She has been rated too high and we had to pop her in there last week. She is a tiny little thing and carries topweight in 0-120’s and she couldn’t handle the ground in a 0-130 at Wetherby last week. We will have to see how she comes in.”

GOOD VIBRATION 5 gr g Saddler Maker – Queenhood Runner-up in four of his 5 starts under Rules. Beaten eight lengths by Captain Redbeard in a handicap hurdle at Sedgefield (2m 4f) at the end of January off his current mark of 110. “He is a smashing horse and run well in all his novice hurdles. We are just giving him a short break now and he will probably come back and run in a handicap hurdle in three weeks time.”

HAINAN 5 gr g Laveron – Honor Smytzer Winner of two of his 13 starts. Scored by four and a half lengths from Iron Butterfly in a handicap hurdle at Catterick (3m 1 1/2f) this month off a mark of 115. Currently rated 125 over hurdles. “He won at Catterick recently and we had been looking to step him up in trip and he duly won quite well. Hopefully, he can run in that Challenger Series and that is what we are aiming for.”

JUST GEORGIE 6 b g Kayf Tara – Just Kate Placed in three of his four hurdles. Finished fourth, beaten 25 lengths, to Wade Harper at Catterick (2m 3 1/2f) this month off a mark of 115. Currently rated 113. “He is going to be much more a chaser than he would be a hurdler but he has done nothing wrong this year. He didn’t really seem to handle the track at Catterick last time but still didn’t disgrace himself. We are really looking for him more as a chaser next season.”

LACKAMON 11 b g Fleetwood – Pearlossa Winner of eight of his 43 starts. Winner of the Durham National at Sedgefield in 2013 and runner-up in two subsequent runnings of the race. Scored by half a length from Alto Des Mottes in the North Yorkshire Grand National at Catterick (3m 6f) off a mark of 125 in January. Currently rated 133. “He finished second in the Durham National again and loves Sedgfield, He won the North Yorkshire National at Catterick and he has an entry in the Eider Chase. He does love a longer trip and enjoys himself doing that.”

MR MOONSHINE 12 b g Double Eclipse – Kinross Winner of six of his 37 starts Rated 144 when pulled up in the Skybet Chase at Doncaster when last seen out in January of last year. “He is well back into work now and I am possibly looking for an entry for him at Haydock this weekend. We will start him off over hurdles but he does have an entry in the Grand National. After he’s had a run over hurdles we will have a look and see if there is a possibility of him running in a Veterans Chase at Newbury but it all depends on how he comes out of Haydock.”

MWALESHI 11 b g Oscar – Roxy River Winner of seven of 33 of his starts. Finished fourth, beaten 13 lengths, to Firth Of Clyde at Sedgefield (2m 3 1/2f) in January off a mark of 125. Currently rated 122. “He has been a good little horse for us but we haven’t just managed to hit the spot with him so far this season. He has run well in defeat and he is getting on a bit but hopefully we can pick up a race with him somewhere along the line.”

NO PLANNING 9 b g Kayf Tara – Poor Celt Winner of nine of his 32 starts. Last win in a handicap hurdle at Haydock (2m 7f) when beating Alternatif a length off a mark of 135. Best effort over fences this term when third, beaten 13 lengths, to Vieux Lion Rouge at Haydock (3m) in November. Currently rated 132 over fences. “We haven’t found the right race with him this year. We did go over the big fences at Aintree but that didn’t work and he fell. We ran him in the Great Yorkshire Chase and he pulled up there but he seems to be in good form and we will just get him back round Wetherby or Haydock – places he loves going too. He stays three miles and we will find one for him before the end of the season.”

NOT A BOTHER BOY 8 b g Flemensfirth – Cab In The Storm Winner of three of his 12 starts. Completed a hat trick when winning a handicap hurdle at Southwell (3m) in December off a mark of 103. Runner-up in two subsequent starts over fences at Market Rasen and Sedgefield. Rated 117 over fences and 112 over hurdles. “He couldn’t win a hurdle race with him but this season round these small tracks he’s won three and finished second in the Lincolnshire National. He has done nothing wrong at all and stays forever and jumps pretty well. We are looking forward to winning one or two of those long distance races next season with him.”

OPTICAL HIGH 7 b g Rainbow High – Forsweets Winner of one of his 17 starts. Beaten only a neck by Snuker in handicap hurdle at Sedgefield (3m 3f) this month off his current mark of 90. “He won a little race at Market Rasen for one of our young lads and stays pretty well. He just got touched off at Sedgefield last week and there is a possibility we will get him over fences now.”

PALM GREY 8 gr g Great Palm – Lucy Cooper Winner of two of his 13 starts. Last win in a handicap hurdle at Market Rasen (2m 4 1/2f) in December when beating Pixiepot a length and three quarters off a mark of 112. Currently rated 111 over fences and 114 over hurdles. “He was a bit disappointing on his last run but won first time out at Market Rasen and then had a first run over fences with one of our young lads on. He jumped very well and just stayed on. He is just about ready to come out again but we are not sure whether to go back over hurdles or stay to fences.”

SMOOTH STEPPER 7 b g Alflora -Jazzy Refrain Winner of three of his 14 starts. Finished third, beaten eight and three quarter lengths, to King’s Odyssey in a novices’ handicap chase off his current mark of 130 at Cheltenham in January. “He has been nice this season. I feel he’s been a better horse over fences even though he won over hurdles. He won at Newcastle over two miles and seven and then fell at Doncaster. He went down to Cheltenham in January and ran an absolute corker to finish third to King’s Odyssey. He has an entry in the Novice Chase at the Eider meeting.”

SPECIAL WELLS 7 ch g Alflora – Oso Special Winner of one of his 15 starts. Rated 111 over fences. “He is not an easy horse to work out – whether he gets three miles or not. He has run some good races and some moderate ones. He seems in good form and was hampered badly at Catterick last time so we have to forgive that run. He has an entry back at Haydock on Grand National Trials day.”

STRAIDNAHANNA 7 gr g Medaaly – Sue’s Song Winner of three of his 19 starts. Runner-up, beaten a length, to Gold Futures in a handicap chase at Kelso (3m 2f) in October off a mark of 127. Currently rated 128 over fences and won a handicap chase off that rating at Catterick (3m 1f) in February “He was a little bit disappointing at Kelso and although Danny Cook is adamant that the horse wants better ground, he managed to win on soft (g/s places) at Catterick last time.

VENDOR 8 gr g Kendor – Village Rainbow Winner of four of his 24 starts. Solid effort when runner-up, beaten only two lengths, to Shrewd in a listed handicap hurdle at Musselburgh (1m 7 1/2f) off his current mark of 138. “He is a horse that Harvey bought out of Doncaster Sales in May and he has gone very well for us so far. He ran an absolute corker at Musselburgh last week and it’s a possibility he may have an entry at Newcastle or an entry in the Imperial Cup at Sandown. He is definitely going the right way and is going to be a smashing two mile chaser next season.”

VINTAGE CLOUDS 6 gr g Cloudings – Rare Vintage Winner of two of his eight starts. Scored by nine lengths from Baratineur in a novices hurdle at Haydock (2m 3f) in November and runner-up in two similar events at that course since. Currently rated 132 over hurdles. “He is a lovely horse that Trevor Hemmings bred. He won a bumper for us and has won a hurdle for us and ran very well in all his hurdles so far. He gets an entry in the Albert Bartlett novices hurdle at Haydock.”

WAKANDA 7 b g Westerner – Chanson Indienne Winner of six of his 12 starts. Completed a hat trick in listed handicap chases when beating Virak a length in the Sodexo Silver Cup at Ascot (3m) in December off a mark of 151. Earlier successful at Newcastle (2m 7 1/2f) and Wetherby (2m 3 1/2f) Pulled up behind Smad Place in a Grade 2 event at Cheltenham latest start and currently rated 155 over fences. “He won his first three races this season and has been a little star. He went to Cheltenham and couldn’t handle the ground at all as it was very holding. He does provisionally have an entry in the big handicap chase at Kempton. He is a grand little horse and he’s tough.”

THE KNOWLEDGE BLAKEMOUNT – small wind operation could see him fulfil his undoubted potential. CLOUDY TOO – winner of the Peter Marsh and can find success in similar events. DELUSIONOFGRANDEUR – found Musselburgh too sharp last time and plenty of more success can come his way where stamina is a premium. SMOOTH STEPPER – solid effort in a novices handicap chase at Cheltenham last time and can soon rediscover the winning thread. VINTAGE CLOUDS – could prove a different proposition when stepped up in trip. WAKANDA – tough handicapper whose jumping will always stand him in good stead.

everybody gets to a certain point in life when circumstances and your own inner thoughts and the lessons learned throughout our lives have managed to shape our own self belief and acceptance that to have true inner peace and some say enlightenment or transcending higher plains of reality into tranquility and peace of mind but meditation and relaxation are the key to accepting that your the one thats really in control of your own destiny and not life controlling your circumstances to a destiny you cannot stop, only change by random choices and lets be honest life is just an ongoing serious of choices we have to make and just hope and pray that more good choices are made than bad as right and wrong are only words that are used to scare the god fearing people and keep a difference between us fear and unknown just need to be accepted and understood by all people and believes. the secret is compassion and selflessness towards others. thats me and i believe in karma good people can get good karma but first one has to be totally selfless and put other people first and foremost before yourself , do that and good karma will come to you in more ways than you can imagine be a selfish person and think only of yourself then you deserve what awaits you thats a fact what goes around comes around

Wandering Eyes

Smith racked up 40 winners and a little more than £600,000 in prize-money last term with Midnight Shadow capping a highly respectable campaign with victory in the Scottish Champion Hurdle.

“Hopefully we can have that and a little bit more this time,” Smith adds.

Midnight Shadow is being readied for a crack at the Greatwood Hurdle and ambitions of a second Grand National success for the stable rest with lionhearted chaser Vintage Clouds.

Five-year-old gelding

Scorpion (sire) – Cash Customer (dam)

Owner: Trevor Hemmings

Form figures: 32178-1

Racing Post Ratings: 108c Official rating: –

Made a smashing chase debut on his comeback at Sedgefield, jumping his rivals into submission. He’s quirky at home but did his job properly. He won over hurdles last season and then drifted away but has come back a man. We’ll find a novice handicap chase next and you’d think he’ll progress.

6g Black Sam Bellamy – Art Series

Jacqueline And John Conroy

RPR 119h OR 118h

Harvey bought him out of Emma Lavelle’s and he’s done smashing for us. He’s not the quickest and I’m not whether he’ll develop into a Saturday horse but he’s a scopey jumper who will keep finding for you. He’ll start out over fences at Sedgefield today.

Black-Art.jpg

Joke-Dancer.jpg

Rival to watch

Dan Skelton. He goes everywhere in the search of winners and means business whenever he comes up north.

Midnight-Shadow.jpg

Vintage-Clouds.jpg

9g Westerner – Chanson Indienne

M B Scholey & The Late R H Scholey

RPR 157c OR 148c

A tiny horse with a big heart. Finds life hard as everywhere he goes he has to lug around topweight. A cracking jumper, he likes flat, galloping tracks and won the Sky Bet Chase at Doncaster last term after just being beaten in the Rowland Meyrick at Wetherby.

Barrel racer finds herself ahead of schedule in return to NFR

Barrel racer Sue Smith fully believed she would make a return appearance to the National Finals Rodeo at the Thomas Mack Center. Just not this soon.

Sue Smith rounds the barrel during day three of the National Finals Rodeo at the Thomas & M ...

The sprint down the covered aisle, into the open air and bright lights of the arena. The noise of the Las Vegas crowd cheering loudly. The buckskin-colored drums with Coors logos waiting in a cloverleaf pattern.

Sue Smith has often visualized a run at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. The veteran barrel racer and horse trainer fully believed she would make a return appearance to the Thomas &Mack Center soon.

Just not this soon.

“I honestly was just trying to get set up for next year. I was planning on making a run for it then,” Smith said after qualifying for her first Wrangler NFR in more than a decade. “I was just trying to be in the top 30 so I could get into the winter rodeos, and I wanted to do good in my circuit so maybe I could go to the NFR Open and set myself up for next year. In doing that, I just accidentally made the Finals this year.”

Over the course of the 2023 regular season, the Blackfoot, Idaho, native had enough success on her two horses, Centerfold and Heff, to earn $105,644 and place 14th in the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association barrel racing standings. She previously reached the Finals in 2009 and 2011.

Smith’s path for an unintentional return to Las Vegas started eight years ago, during some early training with Centerfold, now a 12-year-old sorrel mare. The pair were in Arizona taking part in futurity events when Smith made the decision to send her home. The 4-year-old was fast on the sprints but needed more training on how to turn in barrels.

When she sent Centerfold back to Idaho, Smith made the decision to inseminate her and remove the embryo seven days later, placing it in a recipient mare. About 11 months later, Heff was born while Centerfold was in Arizona competing in futurity events. And that birth was immediately a good omen.

“We won second in the slot race at Diamonds and Dirt that afternoon,” Smith recalled.

Fast forward to 2023 and Smith found herself with two high-quality horses from legacy bloodlines that were drawing interest from other rodeo competitors. Smith wasn’t ready to part with either, so she decided it was time to start competing a little more to see how they would fare.

Centerfold set the tone early with several wins, none bigger than her run in late July at the Cheyenne (Wyoming) Frontier Days. An outdoor arena known for its longer runs and big prizes, Smith reached the finals and watched as fellow barrel racer Summer Kosel rewrote the arena record with a blazing time of 16.97 seconds, the first run under 17 seconds in Frontier Days history.

“When Summer goes out there and sets an arena record, I was just like, ‘Well, there’s always second place.’ I thought it was done — I guess Centerfold didn’t feel that way, thank goodness,” Smith said as the duo clocked 16.89 seconds to reset the record and claim more than $22,000 at the rodeo.

Shortly after that record-setting performance, Centerfold suffered a setback that kept her from competing the past few months. The injury forced Smith to change her approach, moving Heff from a back-up horse — seeing competition at smaller rodeos — to primary mount.

While there is a chance Centerfold returns during the NFR, Smith believes in each horse. She had already planned on running both in some form at the event, but she just wasn’t sure how it would all play out.

At the Cinch Playoffs in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, in September, Smith got a boost of confidence in Heff as he sprinted to a time of 13.96 seconds in the first round to place third. While his second run led to an aggregate total that didn’t advance the pair to the semifinals, the 7-year-old had given Smith what she needed.

“At Sioux Falls, the arena dimensions and the setup are similar to the NFR, and he ran really well there. I felt a lot more positive and have a lot more confidence in him having run there now,” Smith said. “A lot of times, you’ll take those young horses and kind of put that pressure on them, and they either fall apart or they step up. He, thank goodness, stepped up to the plate for me.”

Smith has one check so far this week, taking third in the third go-round to pocket $18,325, and she’s obviously hoping for a little more on these final two nights. But more than a decade removed from her last visit as a competitor in Las Vegas, Smith isn’t fretting about which horse is available each night. After all, she never really intended to be here — at least this year.

And Smith plans to fully savor the unexpected moment.

“So many people are there rooting for you, and it’s just an extraordinary experience. This year, I’m going to enjoy it, whatever happens,” Smith said. “I’m not going to say I’m not going to try to win some money, because there’s great money there. But no matter what, I’m going to try to have fun this year and not be too worried about everything.”
