Background [ ]

On October 25, 2012, in partnership with ABC News on the prime-time TV special All Access Nashville with Katie Couric – A Special Edition of 20/20, Swift announced that she would be launching a North American stadium and arena tour in early 2013 in support of her fourth studio album, Red . During a radio interview with WRVW, Swift mentioned that "It's nothing like any other tour before."

Swift told Billboard : "Of course, you know the tour will be a big representation of this record," Swift tells Billboard . "I'm so excited to see what songs the fans like the most and which ones jump to the forefront, because that's the first step. We always see which songs are really the passionate songs and the ones the fans are freaking out over the most, and those are the ones that are definitely in the set list. I can't wait for that."

Swift used Tom Petty's " American Girl " as her entrance song on her previous tour but now takes the stage to Lenny Kravitz's version of "American Woman". She sings a cover of The Lumineers's "Ho Hey" nightly, intertwined with her own "Stay Stay Stay".

Her meet and greet room for the tour was called Club Red .

The stage for the Red tour is when Swift really started getting creative with her stage designs and therefore, add a more evolved look to her live shows. In fact, the shape of the Red Tour stage is very unique, it is in a U shape, with two pits, divided by a catwalk within the U stage. This permitted for fans to feel closer to Taylor during the show and have many interactions.

The main stage catwalk also had a crane that Swift went on during " Treacherous " and " We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together " for the show encore.

There was also a B stage at the back of the venue, with a round-shaped platform that lifted up. Swift would perform the surprise song of the set on this stage.

During the shows in Asia, the stage was been modified with several cuts, including:

  • The U stage was completely removed and replaced by a standard T-shaped catwalk
  • The overhead screen above the stage were removed, and there was only one back screen, not three.
  • Many lighting were reduced.
  • The crane at catwalk, the lifted platform on B stage and floating constellation during " Sparks Fly " was removed.

How these Manitobans managed to get tickets to Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour

Taylor Swift

A group of Manitobans is living their wildest dreams after managing to score tickets to Taylor Swift’s wildly-anticipated Eras Tour in Toronto.

Earlier this month, fans all across the country signed up for Ticketmaster’s verified fan codes to get a shot at buying the tickets.

Pamela Vega was one of the lucky Winnipeggers who got a code and ticket. She’s already attended three Eras tour concerts so far – in Denver, Minneapolis, and Mexico – so she knew the drill and made several Ticketmaster accounts to increase her chances.

“Out of those eight codes that I registered for I got waitlisted on seven, so I only got the one for the first sale for that Nov. 14 date,” she said.

At the end of last week, the code recipients logged into Ticketmaster to try to purchase tickets for one of Swift’s six Toronto shows, which are scheduled for November 2024.

Coral Bateman, another Manitoban who is heading to Toronto next year for the concert, said the process of getting tickets was stressful.

She said everything went wrong the morning she had to buy the tickets, including her daughter telling her the wrong time to get the tickets, as well as her credit card verification code being sent to her husband who was away at work.

“[The tickets are] for my daughter really,” Bateman said.

“I’ve got a 14-year-old daughter who’s a huge fan. I didn't think there was any way we would actually be able to secure the ticket. So I'm kind of just blown away that it all worked out.”

Vega was able to get a floor ticket, while Bateman said she will be in section 106.

“I think it will be a little bit of an obstructed view. We’re kind of beside the stage from the looks of the map,” Bateman said.

“We’re kind of beside and behind the stage from the looks of the map. But, by the time I got those tickets, I wasn't even looking at sections or prices.”

Vega, who is originally from Mexico, has loved Swift for many years and grew up with her music.

She said it won’t be her first time seeing Swift in concert in Toronto as during her first-ever visit to Canada in 2013, she saw the Red Tour at the Rogers Centre.

“That first time I visited Canada I was like, ‘I want to move here one day. I want to come study here.' I’ve been following her for years,” she said.

For Bateman, this will be her first time at a concert and her first visit to Toronto. She said she’s been listening to Swift since around the time her daughter was born.

“Later on, [my daughter] became a fan herself and so [Swift] has kind of been along with us through this little journey, if you will,” she said.

“So it just worked out great. But that’s going to be our first concert and together.”

As for what they’re most excited to hear at the concert, Vega said she can’t wait for the surprise songs.

“It’s always my favourite part,” she said.

For Bateman, she said she’s excited for it all.

“We’re just so excited for the experience. There’s very few of her songs that we don’t know and love and so we’re just excited,” she said.

Taylor Swift law class at Queen’s University making shock waves

Taylor Swift

A first of its kind entertainment law course centred on Taylor Swift will be offered this fall at Queen’s University.

Professor of business law at Queen’s University, Mohamed Khimji, will be teaching the course this September. He told CRFA Live on Newstalk 580 CFRA Sunday Swift’s high influence on the public will make the class more relatable to the world we live in.

The idea came “spontaneously” to his mind about a month ago.

“I was just chatting with one of my colleagues (who’s) also a fan and we were just going through her recorded albums and debating which one was better, the Taylor’s version or the original version of that,” he said.

His colleague then asked “why did (she) record her albums?”

To answer that question, the professor started explaining the business and legal reasons associated with Swift’s recordings.

“It made me think, my students would be interested in this as well,” he added.

That was when he started doing research on the singer’s various interactions with the law. In the process, he figured that he can actually structure an entire entertainment law course, consisting entirely of examples from her career to illustrate the business and legal reasoning behind her moves.

Swift for popularity, history, legal business deals

The Kingston, Ont. university’s professor says Swift is worthy of study for being a social phenomenon.

“Taylor Swift is everywhere in NFL, in football and NHL. It’s kind of incredible – her reach in pop culture,” Khimji said.

"She dominates the pop culture to such a degree that we would struggle to find the historical comparison. Right now, the prime ministers of Singapore and Thailand are fighting over which country has the exclusive right to host the Eras Tour around that part of the world. It’s just astonishing."

In addition to the fun Swift law course offers, the business lessons are big in terms of copyrights, trademarks and various legal subjects, he notes.

"It seemed like it was a practice area. It touches on various legal subjects like contracts and the negotiation of record deal, specifically, in her case, (it) touches on copyright, but that’s the legal regime that governs ownership of creative work,” he said.

He adds that that specific example from her career has a practical impact on how business deals are now negotiated, citing her lawyers who negotiate these deals.

Taylor Swift club at Ontario public school calls urgent meeting. On the agenda? Her latest album

30 students are part of anderdon public's taylor swift club.

taylor swift red tour winnipeg

This public school has a Taylor Swift Club. And they called an urgent meeting today

Social sharing.

Even though it was a school night, like many Swifties Amherstburg student Keianna Ronayne stayed up to listen to Taylor Swift's new album — The Tortured Poets Department — which dropped at midnight.

"I just listened to it all night," she told CBC News.

Despite it being a long night, Keianna came to school prepared to discuss the release with her fellow Swifties.

She and about 29 of her peers called an urgent meeting of their Taylor Swift Club at Anderdon Public School to break it all down.

"I thought [the album] was really good," said Keianna, who was wearing a Swift shirt and a wristful of friendship bracelets.

A hand that is colouring a picture of Taylor Swift.

The group, which has been meeting for the last six weeks, has students from grades 4 to 6.

And all of them, are Taylor Swift superfans.

"Once I became a really crazy and obsessed Swiftie, I was really hoping that like there would be a club for me to join and once I found out that there would be a club at this school, I really wanted to join it because I knew there would be lots of fun things to do," said 10-year-old Olivia Rettig.

Andrea Maziak, who teaches Kindergarten at Anderdon Public, started the group.

"We get together to celebrate all things Taylor Swift," she said, adding that it's also an opportunity for them to reflect on what the superstar stands for.

"We like to really think about the values that she brings forward, and so we do things that kind of align with that, it's a safe space for these kids to get together, bond over something that they all love so much," Maziak said.

  • Group Chat Where does The Tortured Poets Department fit in the story Taylor Swift is telling?
  • Taylor Swift's new album apparently leaks, causing social media chaos

For example, Maziak recently had a worksheet for the students around Swift's song "Shake it Off."

It prompted the kids to write about things that weren't "serving" them and how they wanted to "shake it off."

"I think it's a difficult time in their development and I think just to have that safe space to talk about things and talk about their troubles," she said.

A woman stands with students sitting behind her at desks and a bookshelf to one side of her.

When the club meets, it keeps busy with Taylor-themed trivia, designs Taylor-inspired outfits and album covers and takes part in sing-a-longs to her albums. Maziak says it's also planning to do some charity work for cats — an animal that Taylor loves.

One student in the group said she eventually wants to be a clothing designer and draws outfits inspired by Swift.

"I've been watching the Eras Tour and I'm seeing all these dresses and all these bodysuits that impress me," said 9-year-old Amelia Young.

She said she specifically likes the Fearless dress that Taylor wears during her tour.

School band plays 'Shake it Off'

And the Taylor energy was so infectious at Anderdon Public School Friday, that even their school band — taught by Tim Beneteau — joined in on the fun and played Swift's hit Shake it Off.
