The United States government has imposed restrictions on Zimbabwean citizens working on cruise ships, following a series of incidents that have raised concerns about a potential ‘migration risk’. These restrictions have come as a shock to many Zimbabweans who have been relying on these jobs as a source of income amidst the economic crisis in their home country.

Effective from 20 February 2023, the US government has mandated that all Zimbabweans arriving in Miami on celebrity cruise ships must possess a return flight ticket in order to board any ship sailing into the country’s shores. The reason behind this requirement, as stated by the Celebrity Cruise company, is a significant increase in the desertion of Zimbabwean crew members from multiple cruise lines.

The Impact on Zimbabweans Seeking Employment

According to Lungelo Siziba, director with Team Cruise Limited, a local company that has been assisting Zimbabweans secure jobs on cruise ships, an average of 100 locals are recruited on a monthly basis. This new restriction is expected to drastically impact the employment prospects of these individuals, many of whom are already struggling to find work in their home country.

While the wages offered by cruise ship jobs may seem average by global standards, they provide significant financial relief to workers from Zimbabwe, where the public and private sectors are troubled. Consequently, the restrictions are expected to exacerbate the economic hardships already faced by many in the country.

Previous Incidents Leading to the Restriction

The recent restrictions follow a series of incidents involving Zimbabwean workers on cruise ships. There have been cases of workers failing to return to the ships after docking in Miami, leading to their subsequent disappearance. Such incidents have led to the United States government labeling Zimbabwean workers as a ‘migration risk’.
