Phuket's longest beach was also once its most beautiful, until development and tourism turned it into a bustling hub of activity rather than a retreat from the world. Still, Patong is great for people-watching, and part of the fun of Thailand is that (in addition to being a land of smiles) it is one of contrasts.

You may not be able to find a quiet spot on Patong to read and contemplate life, but you'll find plenty of water sports to keep you entertained. You can try everything here, from flyboarding, jet skiing, and parasailing to stand up paddleboarding and banana boat rides.

Fringed with casuarinas and palms, Kata Beach is a lovely, curving bay hugged by lush hillsides at either end. Although it's still touristy, it's more peaceful than Patong Beach with fewer hawkers. A tiny islet sits just offshore, and the beach itself is broad, with soft, white sand and decent snorkeling spots at either end.

If you're hungry, you can grab a papaya shake or a snack at one of the beachfront stalls, and larger restaurants are within walking distance.

At the southern end of the beach sits The Boathouse Phuket , a luxury boutique hotel that is one of the only resorts fronting the sand. If you want an even quieter slice of shoreline, head south to adjacent Kata Noi Beach .

Less developed than the popular Patong Beach, about 15 minutes away, Karon Beach is a 3.5-kilometer-long strand of squeaky, golden sand and sapphire sea that attracts many couples and families.

When the weather is calm, it's a beautiful spot for a swim, but when the winds whip up, big waves pound the wide-open shoreline here, so take care if you are swimming during these times.

Restaurants and resorts are spread out opposite the beach along the busy road, but a few four-star resorts offer direct beach access, including adults-only Beyond Resort Karon and the luxury bungalows of the nearby Marina Phuket Resort at the southern end of the beach. It's a peaceful spot to take time out from your day. Prayer flags flutter in the breeze, and you'll hear the tinkling of small bells. You can take a taxi or tuk-tuk up the windy six-kilometer road to the hilltop, but you have to climb a steep flight of stairs to the monument.

Look north from the viewpoint over one of the island's most iconic views, with a little bit of everything that makes this island so picturesque: emerald hillsides, blue seas, and white surf. This is one of the island's most photographed vistas.

You can reach the viewpoint by traveling along the branch road in front of Kata Noi Beach in a southwesterly direction toward the southern tip of the island.

Wat Chalong is the largest, most popular, and arguably the most beautiful of all Phuket's 29 temples. It is dedicated to two highly respected monks, Luang Pho Chaem and Luang Pho Chuang, and you can see life-size wax models of them and other figures in the exhibition home.

The Grand Pagoda protects a fragment of Lord Buddha's bone and features murals depicting images from the Buddha's life story.

As you wander through the complex, notice the many golden buddhas in various poses, and make sure you dress respectfully; visitors are not allowed to wear shoes inside the temple, and women must cover their shoulders and knees.

Located within the Khao Pra Theaw Non-Hunting Area, the Gibbon Rehabilitation Center is a great place to learn more about these intelligent creatures and support important work at the same time. The center's mission is to rescue, rehabilitate, and return gibbons to their natural environment.

Many of these animals were poached from their mothers as babies and sold as pets or used in the tourist trade. Visitor contact with animals suitable for release is limited, so they don't become habituated to humans; however, you'll have a chance to meet some of the animals that live full-time at the sanctuary and hear stories about their miraculous rescues.

The center does not charge an entrance fee, but you need to pay to enter the park. You can support the center's important work by making a donation or sponsoring a gibbon. Another way to help their efforts is to refuse requests to pose for pictures with wild animals that are held captive so that their owners can make money from tourists.

After visiting the center, trek through the lush tropical forest to the Bang Pae waterfall for a refreshing dip in the pools.

If you're looking for indoor places to visit during a particularly hot day, the Phuket 3D Museum is a great option. You'll even be able to add a few zany vacation photos to share with your friends and family back home.

This interactive 3D art gallery allows you to look as though you are part of more than 95 trompe-l'œil-style paintings created by clever Korean artists. Formerly called Nai Yang National Park, Sirinat National Park reveals a quieter side of this touristy isle. The 90-square-kilometer coastal park sits on the island's northwest coast and is largely made up of marine areas, including four relatively unspoiled beaches.

Two of these, Hat Nai Yang and Hat Mai Khao, are the only two beaches in Phuket where leatherback turtles come ashore at night to lay their eggs. The best time to see them is from November to February, when locals patrol the beaches and help protect their eggs.

Wat Phra Thong is steeped in local lore. It houses a half statue of Buddha that was broken during a Burmese invasion.

Legend has it that a boy was minding a water buffalo, which he tethered to a piece of metal protruding from the ground using a hemp rope. Suddenly, the boy died, but he later appeared to his father in a dream and told him about the piece of metal. The father began to dig and came upon a statue of Buddha cast in pure gold. The Buddha could not, however, be completely excavated and so a temple was built on the site in 1785.

When the Burmese conquered Thalang, a second attempt was made to dig up the statue, but it broke in two. One half disappeared, and the other still stands in the temple today.

Besides the half Buddha statue, things to see here include the rich carvings on the gables and windows of the temple buildings and a little museum displaying historical artifacts.

Markets are a must-visit when you're in Phuket. You can tantalize your tastebuds with some sizzling street food, listen to live music, pick up some souvenirs, and practice your bargaining skills all in one visit.

A good place to start your market adventure is at the Sunday Walking Street Market . This is one of Phuket Island's biggest attractions, set in the heart of the historical part of town. As the name suggests, this is a Sunday-only market, which runs from 4 to 9pm. It's vibrant, full of lights, busy, and loud — a perfect way to end the week surrounded by beautiful old buildings, stalls selling arts and crafts, and tons of lip-smacking good food. Make sure you wander down the side streets, too. More treasures await off the main strip.

Located on Sai Kor Road, the well-designed indoor Banzaan Fresh Market is a good place to discover exotic fruits, pick up some fresh vegetables and seafood, or try a glass of refreshing coconut water or sugarcane juice. Don't forget to check out the stalls selling gifts and accessories on your way to the big food court upstairs.

If you're after more typical Thai souvenirs, curios, or some cheap T-shirts, the Phuket Weekend Night Market is the place to be. 3. Climb to Big Buddha of Phuket

Number 2 on our list of best things to do in Phuket is the Big Buddha, an iconic 45-meter tall white marble statue sitting at the top of Nakkerd hill in the south of the island. The construction of this statue, entirely from donations, started in 2002. You can contribute too by sponsoring one small white marble tile and signing your name on it. It’s a great thing to do; your name will be there forever. Remember that Big Buddha is more than just a landmark; it is a religious place. You should respect it by dressing appropriately: if you wear shorts or skirts above the knee , you will need to wear a sarong provided by security at the entrance. It would be best if you also tried to keep your voice down, which unfortunately is not very well understood by tourists.

The road to get up there is steep but well-paved, and the panoramic view from the top is worth the climb. To the north, you can see the whole of Chalong Bay to Phang Nga; in the south, you will see Kata Beach. But this fame comes with a price, and Phi Phi may have become too popular. How to get there : Book it in advance if you plan to stay overnight. You can book a ferry or speedboat once in Phuket if you only want to go for the day, but day trips usually allow you such a short time on Phi Phi you won’t have much time for exploration. Bangla Road might not be to everyone’s taste, but judging by the enormous crowd walking up and down Patong walking street every night, Bangla is on many people’s must-see list. Unlike what most people believe, Soi Bangla is not a Sin City for Single Men. It’s a colourful and vibrant street full of life, restaurants, shops, bars and dancing girls. When to go there : Bangla is lively all year round. Nothing happens during the day, and the street closes to traffic around 7 pm. However, the party atmosphere only kicks in after 9 or 10 pm.

7. Explore Phuket Old Town

It’s hard to resist those old Sino-Portuguese streets with beautiful shophouses and magnificent mansions. Phuket’s old town is perfect for a half-day, with many small cafes, bakeries, and eateries along the way. You can reach there by tuk-tuk or even with the local blue bus that stops at the city market, then walk to Thalang Road, the most popular of the old streets of Phuket Town. 8. Visit Chalong Temple

Chalong Temple (locally called Wat Chalong), built at the beginning of the 19th century, is the largest and the most visited Buddhist temple in Phuket. The most iconic building on the temple grounds is a 60-meter-tall stupa sheltering a fragment of bone from Buddha. Inside the building, beautiful paintings and illustrations on the walls and ceilings narrate the life of Lord Buddha, and each floor is full of donated golden statues. You can also climb stairs to reach a terrace and enjoy a panoramic view. How to get there : most people use their cars or bikes to get to Maikhao beach. It seems that some local agencies offer a ride there. Read how to go there by yourself.

When to go there : Please remember that planes land over the beach only during the high season (November to May) when the wind blows east to west! During the low season, planes will land from the other side, over the main road. This is just an indication; that wind can change according to the weather.

Can you go? : Technically, it is not allowed to be under the plane’s path, but no one seems to care.

28. Be Amazed by the Similan Islands

But these are only open from November to May and are a bit far, 100 km northwest of Phuket in the Andaman Sea. If you get a chance, you should go. Planning Your Trip

Best time to visit : Plan your trip between mid-October to mid-February; the “winter” months coincide with a cool, dry climate caused by northeast monsoon winds blowing in from Siberia.
Language: Central (standard) Thai is widely spoken throughout Phuket, though southern Thai is the local mother tongue. A fair number of Phuket locals can manage basic English, but don’t expect them to manage sustained conversation. These are a few useful phrases to learn when traveling in Phuket.

Where to Stay

The vast majority of hotels and resorts in Phuket are located around the west coast, as Phuket’s top beaches can be found there. One exception is Phuket Town, whose affordable hotels are offset by its considerable distance from the beaches.

The graceful Sino-Portuguese buildings, cheap food, and activities around Phuket Town make it an excellent choice for history nerds and foodies. Meanwhile, budget travelers and partygoers should look for accommodations around Patong, home to the island’s hottest nightlife scene and most affordable budget hotels. Hotels around Karon Beach offer a happy medium for tourists who like staying close to the beach, but abhor Patong’s congestion and party-happy atmosphere. The relaxed energy around Karon appeals to families, couples, and seniors.

Getting There

Some 16 million people fly into Phuket International Airport from all over Asia and Europe. Located at the northern end of Phuket, the airport sits over 20 miles from the island’s main tourist stretches. If you’re flying in during Phuket’s peak season, be aware that it will take over an hour to get to or from your Phuket resort, so plan accordingly.

Phuket is connected by bridge to the Thai mainland, allowing domestic travelers to take the bus from cities around Thailand to the island. Most cross-country buses arrive and depart to/from Phuket Bus Terminal 2 on Thepkasattri Road in Ratsada.

Despite Phuket’s relatively low crime rate, some risks remain for visitors to the island. The beaches hide dangerous riptides and jellyfish, whereas locals might also take offense to fighting words or undue talk about politics or religion.

When hanging around the beaches, keep the following threats in view.

Beware of riptides. During monsoon season, Phuket’s beaches hide a nasty secret: deadly riptides that can pull you out to the open sea, or pull you under to drown. Patong, Karon, and Kamala beaches are notorious for these. If you see red flags flying on any Phuket beach, do not go into the water.
Listen for tsunami warnings. The 2004 Boxing Day tsunami hit Phuket hard, killing over 5,000 people. Today, an advanced tsunami warning system watches over Phuket; warnings will be sent via broadcast media and SMS on local cellphones, giving you plenty of time to head to higher ground.

Thai locals are some of the most easygoing people on earth, but remember that their patience can be severely tested, too. Here’s how to stay on locals’ good side—and how to stay out of trouble otherwise:

Never get angry or aggressive . Avoid conflict wherever possible. Thais do not go for pranks or humiliating jokes at their expense, and they also look down on Westerners picking fights. You should also avoid political talk—Thailand has a lese majeste law that penalizes insulting talk about their royal family, so steer clear of that topic in polite conversation.
Don’t do drugs. Thailand has extremely punitive laws against drug trafficking and use. You can spend years in prison if caught with even a small amount of prohibited drugs, or get the death penalty at worst.
Keep your eyes open for scams . Tourist locations tend to attract a fair number of scammers, and Phuket is no exception.

Money Saving Tips

Even as luxe hotels and Michelin-starred restaurants have taken over, they haven’t crowded the backpackers out yet—budget travelers can still find plenty of ways to stretch their dollar. Follow these simple rules to get the most value out of your Phuket trip:

Eat the way locals do. Get a meal at a Patong food hall, or hunker down to street food in Phuket Town. The cheapest meals can be found at wet markets in your vicinity, where you can get rice, meat, and a drink for no more than 100 baht ($3.30).
Use local transportation. Look up the songthaew routes around your hotel and your preferred destinations, and ride them whenever possible. Tuk-tuks and motorcycle taxis will also let you haggle the price down to a certain extent.
Visit Phuket in the low season. Between May and October, Phuket gets the brunt of the monsoon season. Prices are at their lowest for both accommodations and transportation, though, which can save you money in what is arguably Thailand’s priciest town.
Get a local SIM card for your phone. Assuming your phone is compatible with the local networks, buying a prepaid SIM card will let you surf the web and call home without breaking the bank. You have your choice of three brands: AIS , DTAC , and TrueMove . All are available at the airport, or at any convenience store on the island.
Drink Thai-made beers. Chang, Leo, and Singha beers are much cheaper than Australian or European beers around Phuket—and they’re arguably just as good.

If you’re in Phuket Old Town, one of the best things to do is to walk around and sample the food. We did an amazing Phuket Food Tour with A Chef’s Tour , where the guide Nam took us to sample different flavors of Thai, Malay, Burmese, and Chinese cuisine.

With everything within walking distance and even the possibility of providing some vegetarian substitutes where available, it was an unforgettable culinary experience that I would recommend everybody tries.

Another well-known temple to see absolutely in Phuket: the Big Buddha.

This 25m tall white marble statue on top of a hill can be seen for miles around. It quickly became one of the most popular tourist attractions in Phuket!

Apart from the statue, which I must admit is quite impressive, you can get a beautiful 360° view of the island and the beaches.

As I was saying, most people who travel to Phuket come here mainly to enjoy its beaches.

So what are the most beautiful beaches in Phuket?

Freedom Beach, with its white sands and turquoise waters. Only accessible by boat from Patong beach or by walking (but sometimes the path is closed).
Kata Beach, a vast stretch of sand, as popular as Patong, with restaurants and cafes everywhere
Karon beach, the second largest beach on the island
Nai Harn Beach is located in a sheltered bay, surrounded by greenery
Laem Singh Beach, a beautiful strip of fine sand bordered by palm trees
Ya Nui beach renowned for snorkelling activities
Kamala beach, ideal for families

It is impossible to visit Phuket and not explire the most famous island of Thailand, Koh Phi Phi!

The island is located between Phuket and Koh Lanta and is ideal fpr a day trip from Phuket.

The island is famous for being home to the Maya Bay beach, which was discovered by the whole world in the movie “The Beach” with Leonardo di Caprio. Since then, any good itinerary in Thailand must include a visit to Koh Phi Phi.

Unfortunately, the having nearly 5,000 visitors per day and hundreds of boats had severely damaged corals and the ecosystem. The beach was closed a few years before being reopened.

It may be closed occasionally a few months a year, but in this case you can see Maya Bay from the boat.

Every day, trips leave from Phuket and you can explore several islands in 1 day including Koh Phi Phi, Bamboo Island, Khai Island and Maiton Island. There are also stops at Monkey Beach, Pi Leh Cove and Viking Cave.

During your stay in Phuket, you must spend an evening to attend a Muay Thai boxing fight.

It is the national sport of Thailand and all the cities have a stadium where the fighting takes place several times a week.

In Phuket, it’s at the Bangla Boxing Stadium in Patong. For almost 4 hours, you can watch a succession of fights (children, women, men) in a charged atmosphere , punctuated by musicians who mark the hits.

On the other hand, Muay Thai is considered one of the most violent sports in which almost all strikes are allowed, so it’s not for the faint-hearted.

You have to buy your ticket early to get a seat, the Thai people love it and the stadium is often full.

During your walk in Phuket Town, you can also visit Monkey Hill.

As the name suggests, this hill is inhabited by entire colonies of monkeys. The monkeys are used to people, and there are dozens of them on the road waiting for one thing, to be fed! And Thai people have a good business sense, there are banana and groundnut sellers all over the place.

Remember to put all your food and things inside your bag, as they love trying to steal from you. And don’t think they are pets. Even though they are used to humans, they are still wild animals and can be aggressive.

If you are trying to monkey around by taunting them with food, don’t be surprised at how quickly they react by trying to scratch or bite you. Follow basic principles of caution and all will be well!

At the top of the hill , accessible only by foot or scooter, you can admire a panoramic view of Phuket from here.

The Bang Pae waterfall is one of the most popular places in Phuket among the local population.

It is a little neglected by tourists because it is located to the north-east of the island, in the least touristy part. To get there, you will have to rent a scooter or a car.

At 18m tall, it is the largest waterfall in Phuket. It takes about 10 minutes on foot along a river to get there. When we visited there, the place was filled with Thai people who came to spend a some time with their family and swim.

Bang Pae is part of the Khao Phra Thaeo National Park, so you will have to pay 200 Bahts per person to enter it.

The waterfall itself is not exceptional , people go there mainly to visit the gibbon rehabilitation centre (Gibbon Rehabilitation Project). Run by volunteers, it hosts gibbons that were once abused or adopted by families who got rid of them when they grew too big.

The goal is to try re-settle them into their environment gradually . You can support the project by sponsoring a gibbon.

I’m telling you about Coral Island to dissuade you from going there!

The island is less than 30 minutes away by boat from Phuket and is filled with tourists. Every day, boats line up in front of the beach and the people flood out.

And all these people are just splashing around in one place. Add to this the incessant drone of water activities and boat engines, and you will get to see the negative side of some places in Thailand.

Not to mention that the beach is not very clean and the facilities (sunshades, deckchairs) are not on their last legs!

So there are a lot of better things to do in Phuket!

As with Coral Island, there is Racha Island, 30 minutes away from Phuket speed boat .

The island is renowned for its seabed , ideal for snorkelling, but unfortunately, diving with dozens of people means seeing more legs and orange vests in the water than fish!

And the island is unfortunately included in all the tours organised for Chinese tourists, you will see hordes of them landing from 10:30 am.

In short, there are other ways to find a more peaceful experience on beaches in Phuket. I thought I should warn you!

It is held every year during the ninth lunar month for 9 days and as its name indicates, it involves of not eating meat during that time. Nothing too original so far.

But things get a little tricky during the processions, where some participants begin to mutilate themselves and pierce their cheeks with various objects, ranging from a single needle to several swords. Very impressive to see.

As I said in the section dedicated to Patong, Bangla Road is the place to go out in Phuket. There is something for all styles and tastes: gogo-bars, lounge bars, live music… And if you’re looking for a night club where you can dance all night long, head for the Illuzion , Phuket’s trendiest nightclub.

To attend a traditional dance show or one with actors and dancers , you can go to the Simon Cabaret Show or the Siam Niramit.

However, you must avoid the Phuket Fantasea show where elephants take part and where you can take pictures with baby tigers before the show.

I haven’t been there, but we all know how animals are treated at these kinds of attractions. Not to mention the 4,000-seater dining room where you can dine before for an exorbitant price. And it’s notorious for not being that good, far from the quality of Thai food.

The best things to do around Phuket?

After touring the attractions I discussed in the best things to see, you must continue your stay in Thailand by exploring one or more islands around Phuket.

The islands of Koh Yao Noi and Koh Lanta are easily accessible from Phuket but deserve a minimum of 2-3 days and not just a day trip.

As for Krabi , although it is not an island, the region is a good base for visiting the surrounding islands.

Koh Yao Noi is just a 30-minute boat ride from Phuket. And it is much quieter!

Forget the crowded beaches and the noise, Koh Yao Noi is a really soothing island. It is the ideal island for relaxing holidays and enjoying nice beaches.

From Koh Yao Noi you can also book boat trips to explore the islands of Ko Pak Bia, Ko Lao Lading, Ko Hong or James Bond Island. You will have the opportunity to catch up if you haven’t had time to see it from Phuket.

This is clearly my favourite island to visit near Phuket!

Another well-known island that you must visit around Phuket: Koh Lanta.

To reach there, it takes about 4 hours by boat , usually with a change at Koh Phi Phi. If you didn’t visit Koh Phi Phi, it is rather nice because the boat makes a stop to see Maya Bay beach.

On Koh Lanta, you can enjoy beautiful sandy beaches, which are also less touristy than those in Phuket.

You must also visit the 4 islands of Koh Chueak, Koh Waen, Koh Muk and Koh Ngai . Snorkelling stops are planned at various places and there are lots of fish to watch.

From Phuket, Krabi is located on the other side of the Andaman Sea.

The Krabi area is known for its huge karst peaks and its small and pretty islands like Turtle Island or Chicken Island. You can discover them via boat trips . Click here to book.

20 km from the city, you can visit the Ao Nang beach , which is just 10 minutes away from a heavenly spot in Thailand and the region: Railay .

Bordered by large karst cliffs , the place is truly magnificent. The cliffs are also paradise for climbers, with nearly 700 routes.

The best things to do in Phuket with children?

To organise your family trip to Phuket, here is a list of all things to do:

Enjoy the beaches , and you will be spoilt for choice in Phuket
Spend a day with elephants
Attend a show with traditional dances and songs
Take a tour of the night markets to browse souvenirs
Feed monkeys at Monkey Hill (be careful)
Picnic at the Bang Pae waterfall and seeing gibbons

Spend the day at the Andamanda water park, Thailand’s largest water park, which opened in 2022.

To visit Phuket and its nearby spots , you must plan at least 3 days.

You can of course spend a week or more enjoying the beaches and make several day –trips in boats to visit the islands.

If you have a day to visit Phuket , you can spend the day in Patong , the island’s main tourist area:

Enjoy the beach
Walk along Bangla Road
Do some shopping at the night market
Watch a show at Simon Cabaret or a Muay Thaï Boxing Fight

If you have 2 days in Phuket, you can continue from the schedule for the first day and add:

A walk through the streets of Phuket Town
Climb to Monkey Hill to see the monkeys
Go to the Khao Rang Hill view-point
End the day at the beach

In 3 days in Phuket, you can continue from the schedule for the first two days and then you have 4 options:

1. Discover the South of the island:

Visit Wat Chalong
Go to see the Big Buddha
Admire the view at Karon View Point
Stop at Nai Harn Beach
Visit Windmill Viewpoint and Yanui Beach
Watch the sunset at Promthep Cape

2. One morning in an elephant sanctuary + 1 afternoon zip-lining

3. Bang Pae waterfall in the Khao Phra Thaeo National Park or a cooking class + afternoon on one of the western beaches: Surin, Bangtao, Laem Sing or Kamala

4. A day trip with a choice of:

Great, you have time to do all the things I recommend in this guide!

Continue with my circuits for days 1 and 2. For the other days, everything is given for day 3 , you can do everything without having to choose!

And if you’re tired of Phuket then head for another island in the Andaman Sea: Koh Yao Noi or Koh Lanta are waiting for you 😊

If you want to be in the middle of the action, I have prepared a selection of accommodation on the Patong side:

Lub D Phuket Patong: Youth Hostel 5 minutes from Patong Beach and 10 minutes from Bangla Road. Modern and very clean dormitory bed from €12. Strong points: huge swimming pool, common areas with even a boxing ring, design, cleanliness. This is the best hostel in Phuket!
Mazi Design Hotel by Kalima: Located 5 minutes from the night market and 10 minutes from Bangla Road. Spacious designer double room from €35 per night, breakfast at €7. Strong points: swimming pool, location, comfort of the rooms. It’s my favorite for its excellent value for money in Patong.
Holiday Inn Express Phuket Patong Beach Central: Located opposite the beach. Modern and warm double room with balcony from €72, breakfast included. Strong points: outdoor facilities, swimming pool, welcoming atmosphere and the friendliness of the staff.
Phuket Marriott Resort Spa, Merlin Beach: 5-star hotel complex located 2 miles from Patong, right on Tri-Trang beach. Warm and comfortable double room with private balcony or terrace from €110, breakfast at €19. Strong points: sea-side location, private beach, quiet, playground for children, setting. This is my recommendation for a luxury stay in Phuket!

If you prefer to stay in Phuket Town, here is my selection of hotels:

Baan Baan hostel: Hostel located in Phuket Old Town. Dormitory bed from €8, breakfast included. Strong points: helpful staff, cleanliness, location, calm atmosphere. The best youth hostel to stay in Phuket Town!
Ritsurin Boutique Hotel: Located 600 metres from Thalang Street. Clean and well-equipped double room from €28. Strong points: location, cleanliness, friendly staff.
The Malika Hotel: Located 1.8 km from the old town. Double room with very comfortable bedding and balcony from €38, breakfast at €6. Strong points: swimming pool, quiet atmosphere, friendly staff, ideal location to take the boat to Koh Phi Phi. It’s my favorite for its excellent value for money in Phuket Town!
Casa Blanca Boutique Hotel: Located in the old town. Double room decorated with great taste from €50 per night, breakfast at €7. Strong points: excellent location, friendly staff, right next to the night market.
Novotel Phuket Phokeethra: Located 1 mile away from the old town. Super spacious double room, modern design from €85, breakfast at €15. Strong points: setting, comfort, ideal to visit the old town, close to the boat to the islands of Koh Phi Phi and Koh Lanta. This is my recommendation for an upscale stay in Phuket Town!

Phuket Marriot Resort & Spa - Hôtel de luxe à Phuket

To have a meal in Phuket and everywhere in Thailand, you can’t do better than a night market and its numerous food stalls. Everyone can eat whatever they want and this avoids arguments about the choice of the restaurants (it happens to all of us!)! 😆

Alternatively, you’ll find plenty of restaurants all over Phuket, whether near the beaches or on Bangla Road. However, as the area is very touristy, the prices are often higher than elsewhere in Thailand and the quality is not always there. It is always better to go a bit further away from the busiest streets.

If you want a “real” restaurant with a little more class and a nice view, then I recommend the Mum Tri’s Kitchen. It is located in the bay of Kata. The meals are good and well presented but you will have to pay around €18 per person, which is very expensive for Thailand.

To discover authentic Thai cuisine, your best option is a food tour by a local guide.

The visit I have selected will give you the opportunity to taste fifteen dishes including: a Burmese curry, samosas , naans , exotic fruits, shrimps cooked in banana leaves, noodles, pork kebabs…

Needless to say, it is better to go there on an empty stomach! The dishes are really good and the fact that there is a an upper limit of 8 people is great.

To get around and visit Phuket, you have several options:

Scooter: the ideal way to be independent and stop where you want. But you still need to be capable of driving and be really careful. Most of the hotels or guesthouse in Phuket offer one for rent. Don’t forget to wear your helmet.
Car: you can rent a car to get around Phuket. You should compare prices on Rentalcars.com.
Bus / Song Thaew: convenient to travel to/from Phuket Town and to beaches. However, it takes long enough to go from one beach to another because most of the times you will travel through the city and have to change buses. Buses generally stop around 5:00 or 6:00pm.
Tuk-tuks: a small special feature of Phuket, the price of a tuk-tuk trip is not really negotiable, the latter having agreed on the prices! And of course it’s very expensive, and even more so at the end of the day when the buses don’t run anymore.
Taxi: the same as for tuk-tuks, it is impossible to negotiate and no driver will want to set the metre on (apart from those at the airport, if you are lucky). You will therefore have to pay 700 Bahts for less than 30 minutes!
Private taxi: to combat the taxi mafia, you can book a private car or a minibus with a driver. They will drive you everywhere and wait for you every time. You must book online by clicking here to get an assured price.

How to get to Phuket

To reach Phuket, you have several option.

Phuket has an international airport, so you can land there directly or arrive on a national flight from Bangkok, Chiang Mai or Chiang Rai.

Flights are therefore the quickest way to get to Phuket.

The airport is located to the north of the island.

Do not hesitate to compare the flight prices to Phuket using our comparator in the next section.

To avoid getting ripped off by a taxi or the stress of taking the bus , once you arrive at Phuket airport, you can book your transport back to your accommodation in advance. The driver will wait for you with a name-sign. You can also choose your vehicle (4 to 8 seats).

You can also go to Phuket by bus , from Bangkok for example.

The journey takes at least 12 hours and the fares start from 640 Bahts.

From Bangkok, the other option is to take the train to Surat Thani (8 hours ) + 1 bus to Phuket (add 5 hours).

From Krabi, Koh Lanta and Koh Phi Phi , you can go by boat to Phuket.

You can choose between speed boats (faster but more expensive and – less comfortable) or ferries . You will disembarked at the Rassada port , 3 km from Phuket Town.

10 Best Places to Visit in Phuket

Beaches of extraordinary beauty are the star attractions of Thailand’s largest island and wealthiest province. Served by the second largest airport in Thailand and connected to the mainland by road bridges, Phuket’s easily accessible location on the western shore of the Andaman Sea attracts holiday travelers from around the world. Stretches of white sand arcing around blue lagoons aren’t the island’s only appealing features. Phuket also boasts a broad array of cultural and entertainment attractions, ranging from the clubs of lively Patong to national parks, serene temples and engaging museums.

There’s plenty of active adventures to experience in Phuket too, including deep-sea diving, snorkeling and hikes into the island’s mountainous interior. An abundance of pampering resorts, hotels and restaurants means that visitors don’t have to sacrifice comfort to enjoy all the sights and activities Phuket has to offer. An overview of the best places to visit in Phuket:

10. Hat Mai Khao [SEE MAP]

Hat Mai Khao is a beach on the northwestern coast of Phuket. It’s also known as Airport Beach, as it’s very close to the airport. The northern portion is known as Hat Sai Khao, a long sandy beach with groves of Casuarina trees along the shore. The area around Mai Khao is still very quiet and undeveloped as it is part of the Sirinat National Park.

On quieter days it is still possible here to walk for kilometers without seeing a single person. A short distance out into the water, there is a sharp drop off into the Andaman Sea, making swimming dangerous from May to November.

9. Cape Panwa [SEE MAP]

The cape that stretches out from the southeastern corner of Phuket is home to a number of attractions worth visiting, including Khao Khat, or Panwa Beach. While the sand is rougher than beaches elsewhere on the island, few places in Phuket are as untouched by urbanization as Panwa.

While there are few facilities on the beach itself, a stay in one of the seaside villas offers travelers the chance to enjoy a quiet and peaceful holiday in perfect comfort. Nearby is the recently renovated Phuket Aquarium where visitors can stroll through a long underwater tunnel for up-close looks at marine life ranging from sharks to sting rays.

8. Hat Nai Han [SEE MAP]

Often referred to as Hat Nai Harn, Nai Han is a secluded beach located at the southernmost tip of Phuket Island. As home to the Nai Han monastery, this tranquil beach has escaped overdevelopment, although there are several fine resort hotels along the shoreline as well as anchorage for visiting yachts.

Hat Nai Han is also close to Phromthep Cape, one of the Phuket’s most popular viewpoints. Each evening, travelers from all over Phuket come to watch the sunset. Adventurous visitors climb down a rocky trail to the edge of the promontory to enjoy the best view.

7. Hat Kamala [SEE MAP]

Located to the north of Patong, Hat Kamala is a tranquil, picturesque beach that’s ideal for swimming, snorkeling and sunbathing. The north end of Hat Kamala has a coral reef that invites undersea adventures while the rest of the beach features a sandy sea floor that’s perfect for wading.

Located at the south end of this uncrowded beach is Wat Baan Kamala, a Buddhist temple, which includes images and statues depicting the Buddha’s life. With theatrical productions showcasing the legends and myths of Thailand, the nearby Phuket Fantasea theme park is a great place for families to explore the country’s cultural heritage.

6. Hat Surin [SEE MAP]

For an upscale beach vacation in Phuket, it’s hard to beat the amenities offered at the luxury resorts located among the gorgeous homes on the island’s so-called Millionaire’s Row. High-end resorts in the area offer everything from spa treatments and Thai cooking classes to elephant rides.

Lined with gently swaying casuarina trees, the west coast beach features beautifully groomed sand and crystal-clear water. For most of the year, Hat Surin’s calm waters make it ideal for snorkeling and kayaking. Strong currents during the off season, however, can make swimming treacherous.

5. Hat Rawai [SEE MAP]

Despite the fact that Hat Rawai was the first tourist beach established on Phuket, it’s better known today as a jump-off point for island-hopping tours. The southern-facing beach is primarily used as a harbor for long-tail, speed boats and fishing boats. A recently built pier invites leisurely strolls, but it’s the Sea Gypsies Fish Market situated next to it that makes a visit to Hat Rawai worthwhile.

Fishermen hawk a wide selection of freshly caught seafood. Across the road is a line of family-run restaurants that will cook the purchased fish. There are few better places than Hat Rawai to experience Phuket’s seafood cuisine.

4. Phuket Town [SEE MAP]

Phuket’s capital and largest city offers visitors the chance to step back in time and explore the island’s rich history. Tin mining made Phuket a boom town during the 19th century, and much of the city’s charm comes from the splendid Sino-Portuguese architecture built during this prosperous era.

3. Hat Kata [SEE MAP]

Known as Hat Karon’s sister beach, Hat Kata is situated to the south of its sibling and features two stretches of golden sand separated by a rocky headland. On the northern side, the clear waters and relatively safe swimming conditions of Hat Kata Yai make it a family favorite.

Multiple resorts, restaurants and shops are located across the road next to the beach. The more secluded Kata Noi Beach is a small cove nestled among forested hills. Challenging waves attract surfers to Kata Noi during the monsoon season, and the gorgeous scenery draws visitors year round.

Located just a short drive south of bustling Patong, Karon Beach is the second most popular place to visit in Phuket. With large resorts lining the shoreline, Hat Karon attracts visitors who want comfortable accommodations that make it easy to relax and enjoy the sun, sea and sand.

From lazy strolls along the island’s third longest beach to snorkeling and diving adventures among the coral reefs located at the southern end of the sand, activities in Hat Karon revolve around the water. An array of excellent seafood restaurants adds to Hat Karon’s appeal.

More than 50 years of continual development has transformed Hat Patong from a secluded beach into a holiday destination best known for its dusk-to-dawn nightlife. Located on Phuket’s west coast, the city of Patong is jam-packed with hundreds of restaurants, discos, bars and clubs, most of which are centered around Bangla Road.

Quieter sections of the city feature upscale shops and one-of-a-kind boutiques. Despite the city’s growth, with its scenic crescent-shaped bay and wide sandy shoreline, the beach remains one of the prettiest in Thailand.

Best Time to Visit Phuket, Thailand

Karon, Kata and Kata Noi Beach in Phuket, Thailand

During the dry season, which runs from November to April, you can expect clear skies, warm temperatures, and minimal rainfall, making it an ideal time for beach activities, water sports, and exploring the island’s attractions. Due to the excellent weather, December to February are the best times to visit.

The wet season in Phuket lasts from May to October, with the highest rainfall between June and September. Although the weather can be unpredictable during this time, it also brings lush green landscapes and fewer crowds. You’ll also find excellent deals on accommodations in Phuket and fewer tourists, although outdoor activities may be limited due to the weather.

The dry season is the ideal time to visit for the best weather. If you don’t mind the occasional rain shower and want to avoid the crowds, the wet season can offer a more budget-friendly and peaceful experience.

Each beach and surrounding area also has its own personality to match. Head to Kata or Karon Beach for some of the prettiest stretches of beach, or Kamala Beach for a quiet, chilled getaway.

Why Go To Phuket

Pure white sands, aquamarine waters and limestone cliffs await travelers who visit Thailand's southwestern island of Phuket. Surrounded by the Andaman Sea and about an hour by plane from Bangkok , this island is a little piece of paradise, which comes with a relatively low price tag for everything from its accommodations to spa treatments and boat tours . But along with its tropical appeal, Phuket beckons to travelers wanting to experience its flavorful cuisine (think: lemongrass, lime leaves, chillies) and its rich culture, heavily influenced by its reigning religion: Buddhism.

The best time to visit Phuket is between November and April when weather conditions are ideal for beach activities, such as swimming and boating . The six months between May and October are monsoon season, and although accommodation prices are much lower this time of year, the water conditions can be dangerous.

What You Need to Know

Learn the beach flags There are drownings every year in Phuket – not to mention daily rescues – so pay attention to the flags posted in the waters. Red means "no swimming," yellow means "be careful," and a pair of half-red half-yellow flags denote that you should swim in between the two flags.

Barter with the tuk-tuks Make sure you agree upon the price of your tuk-tuk ride before you get in to avoid being overcharged when you reach your destination.

Avoid the tap water Buying and drinking bottled water will help you avoid any water-induced stomach woes.

How to Save Money in Phuket

Book your hotel in advance You'll pay a premium if you're booking your hotel on arrival, especially during the peak season months of December and January.

Find the best exchange rate Skip the airport when you want to exchange your U.S. dollars for Thai baht. The off-brand kiosks in the main streets of popular beach towns usually offer the best rates.

Check the hotel perks Some hotels offer a complimentary shuttle service to and from the airport, as well as between popular beaches, so check out the property's perks before shelling out your baht for other modes of transport.

Culture & Customs

Thai is the official language of Thailand and its island Phuket, but you'll find that most tourist operators speak proficient English. Still, you might want to carry along a Thai phrasebook just to be safe. Some phrases you might want to memorize include: "hello," sa wat dee ; "how are you?," sa baai dee reu ; and "thank you," kòp kun mâak . When you're communicating with various taxi or tuk-tuk drivers, you might want to show them the address of your destination in Thai, especially if you're traveling to places that are off the beaten track.

Thailand's currency is the baht. One U.S. dollar is equal to about 33 Thai baht, but the exchange rate fluctuates, so be sure to check it before you go . Travelers can exchange their money at the airport, but moneychangers in various cities on Phuket offer the best exchange rates.

Buddhism is the official religion in Thailand, and the island hosts many attractions, such as Big Buddha and Wat Chalong , which reflect its predominant religion. When visiting these places, it's important that visitors respect the dress code, including wearing shorts or skirts that come to the knee and shirts that cover shoulders and midriffs.

What to Eat

Phuket's cuisine is an extension of the culinary delights found on the mainland. Tom yum goong (a soup with shrimp), som tam (a papaya salad) and green curry are all mainstays on the menus in Phuket. For an upscale Thai experience, visitors should book a table at Thong Dee The Kathu Brasserie , which earns high marks among recent travelers for its friendly and accommodating staff and consistently delicious meals. For a cheap but nonetheless delicious experience, travelers should head to O-Oh Farm Ta-Eiad in Phuket Town.

To get a deeper understanding of the local cuisine, travelers may want to book a cooking class, many of which are taught in English. The Kata Thai Cooking Class by Sally , located in Kata Beach, and Phuket Town's Phuket Thai Cookery School are both traveler-approved. At classes like these, chefs coach travelers on how to make traditional Thai foods, such as prawn soup and green curry, among other dishes. These cooking classes charge the equivalent of about $60 to $90 per person.

One of the biggest safety concerns you'll run into on a Phuket vacation are the dangerous rip tides and undertows at the beach, especially during monsoon season, which stretches from June to October. Make sure to pay attention to lifeguard warnings and all of the posted beach flags. For instance, a red flag means "no swimming," a yellow flag means "be careful," and a pair of half-red half-yellow flags signal that you should swim in between the two flags.

Because of the threat of the Zika virus, the Centers for Disease Control & Protection recommends that pregnant women and couples – or those hoping to become pregnant –

refrain from traveling to Thailand. All travelers can ward against mosquito bites by wearing bug repellant and skin-protective clothing, such as high-tech fitness wear.

There are some areas of Phuket that are known as hotbeds for sex trafficking, prostitution and drugs. For instance, Patong, which is known for its wild nightlife, is a center for such activity. Take care to be aware of your surroundings, especially in the evenings in areas like Patong.

Getting Around Phuket

The best way to get around Phuket is by tuk-tuk, though occasionally you might have to rely on another mode of travel, such as a taxi or rental car, if you want to travel beyond the town in which you're basing your vacation. Not only is a tuk-tuk (a small yellow or red truck) the most atmospheric of all transportation options, it's also one of the most convenient – they're absolutely everywhere. Still, they can be expensive for trips outside of town, and a metered taxi, songthaew or rental car might be a better option.

To reach Phuket, most travelers fly into Phuket International Airport (HKT), which is located at the island's northern end. Most of the accommodations are congregated in the south around Patong, Kata, Karon and Phuket Town. Travelers should check if their hotel offers an airport shuttle, and if not, they can hop in an airport bus, which takes travelers to Phuket Town. A taxi is probably the easiest and most efficient way to traverse the distance between the airport and accommodations. Although there are vans and minibus operators that offer rides from the airport to these southern locations, it can be hard to decipher which ones are reputable. If your hotel does not offer a shuttle service, ask if the concierge can recommend any reputable van or minibus operators.

Golden beaches, numerous offshore islands, upbeat markets, a high-octane nightlife, and thrilling watersports characterize Phuket. It is also one of the fastest-accessible beach destinations in Thailand.

Phuket has more than 40 stunning beaches. Beaches like Surin and Kata cater to families and individuals with eccentric tastes. Patong Beach caters to all those who like it cheap, loud, and crazy, even after the sun sets. Bangla Road, with its numerous bars and street food vendors, comes alive as the night ages. Those who shy away from dizzy bright lights and alcohol will find themselves at the Cabaret shows or even at the ever-popular street markets. The Phuket Walking Street or Phuket Weekend markets are places where one can spend hours sifting through various clothes, souvenirs, and novelty items. Aside from all the glitz and swankiness, Phuket offers many traditional activites and experiences. Enjoying tropical weather all year round, the waters of Phuket come to life, brimming with marine habitats from November to February. Activities like snorkeling and scuba diving can be done at popular and scenic locations such as Phi Phi Islands and Similan Islands, which make for day trips by speedboat. Phuket is also the starting point for visiting many islands like James Bond Island. Hidden in plain sight is also an immersive experience of Thai culture. Phuket Town heavily retains its Chinese influence and Sino-Portuguese history via its cuisine, cooking styles, architecture, and historical museums and buildings. Chalong Wat, a Buddhist temple, and Jui Tui Shrine, an important Chinese place of worship, embody how various religions and cultures coexist. Phuket caters to all types of travelers - families, individuals, couples, or groups, across all budgets. With many high-end resorts along most beaches, hotels, luxury shopping outlets, and spas, Phuket is a haven for those looking to splurge big on their vacation and look good while doing it. One of the most visited islands in Thailand, it is relatively small and very easy to explore - most attractions in Phuket are just a tuk-tuk ride away.

Must Know Before You Travel to Phuket

Sim: A booth or a kiosk at the Phuket airport baggage claim area gives out a free Thai sim card. You can also pre-purchase a Thai sim card online or at one of the local shops on the island.
Transport: The traffic and winding roads make getting around Phuket difficult. Hire a car or a motorbike only if you are confident about your driving skills. Tuk-tuks are not the safest and cheapest option, but most preferable for short distances.
Dress appropriately when visiting the Big Buddha. Cover your shoulders and knees.
Snorkeling: Avoid booking cheap tours from local agencies that take over 100 people in one speedboat and insist on knowing the exact number of guests on the boat. Private companies providing small group tours are few and can only be booked directly.
Booking Day Trips & Tours: Apart from online booking, you can easily book tours from one of the tour booths spread across Phuket. You can also book with your hotel. However, for a private cruise or catamaran, etc, it is best to book in advance.
Phuket Airport to your Hotel: Renting a private pickup van is the most comfortable and best option if you are more than 2 people. The local bus is the cheapest option but it may take a long time to reach your hotel. Uber does not exist in Phuket anymore, and Grab taxis will not pick you up from the airport. But you can find a meter taxi at Phuket airport, which is cheaper than the transfer provided by any of the hotels.
Scam: Some establishments in touristy areas have double menus - a normal and overpriced menu. If the price of something looks suspiciously high (like TBH 500-TBH 1000 for a cocktail), you are mostly overcharged.
Avoid the club promoters in nightlife areas like Patong, who offer incredibly attractive drink offers. A decent amount of these is scams.
Beware of pickpockets when walking around tourist areas at night.
Stay Safe: The tourist police are better than the Thai police, who do not speak much English. Dial 1155 to contact the tourist police in case of any emergency.

Patong Beach is the most famous beach in Phuket and offers a variety of water activities such as jet skiing, parasailing and banana boat rides. However, it can be crowded, so many locals prefer to go to nearby beaches such as Freedom Beach or Paradise Beach, both of which are equally as appealing.

Karon is known for being family-friendly area, with a range of activities suitable for all ages. These include water sports, elephant sanctuaries, and cultural activities such as Thai cooking classes.

Karon Park is an area a short walk away from the beach, which offers jogging and cycling paths, as well as a large lake with pedalos.

For children, Dino Park offers a chance to play crazy golf in a prehistoric setting.

Karon has a beautiful beach, with crystal-clear water and white sand.

There are also several smaller, less crowded beaches nearby, such as Kata Yai and Kata Noi Beach (see the next on this list).

But on an island as big and with so many beaches as Phuket, deciding the beach area where you want to stay can be a real headache. You will mainly have to decide if you want to stay on a beach with a lot of nightlife –and in this case your option would be Patong–, or on a quieter beach, as practically the rest of the island’s beaches are, although with notable differences. Most of the beaches that we mention below are on the west coast, which concentrates the best beaches on the island, but we start first with the only option that is not a beach but also deserves to be taken into account: the city of Phuket.

Patong is the hub of tourism on the island that is currently overcrowded and taken over by massage therapists, vendors, jet skis, and beach activities of all kinds. Kata Yai is a wide and beautiful beach, famous for being an excellent place to surf during the rainy season. There is a lot of atmosphere both day and night, with a good choice of restaurants on the seafront. Despite the fact that there are many resorts, few have direct access to the beach: most are on the second line, although some of them are somewhat elevated and enjoy views of the sea. 3️⃣ Kata Noi Beach

Located immediately south of the previous one, Kata Noi is a smaller, quieter and more beautiful beach than its older sister, Kata Yai. The nightlife is much smaller. Kata Noi is ideal for those looking for a hammock, sun and peace in a good resort, for example the fantastic 5* Katathani Phuket Beach Resort, although only available to those traveling with a large budget.

4️⃣ Karon Beach

It is a long beach almost 3 km long, and it is one of the ones with the most resorts, although most of them do not have direct access to the beach –although they do have views of the sea–, since they are behind the road. For those traveling on a tight budget, in Karon there are also hostels with good prices. Despite being quite quiet, it is a beach with good infrastructure and a wide range of restaurants, and it is very close to Patong.

5️⃣ Kamala Beach

Kamala is located in the center of the west coast, and it is a good place to stay for those looking for a quiet beach without giving up all kinds of infrastructures and services. It has a very nice medium-sized beach, which has a lot of beachfront resorts, as well as other types of medium and low-priced accommodation.

6️⃣ Mai Khao Beach

Mai Khao is the northernmost beach in Phuket, and also the longest: you can walk 11 km without practically meeting anyone. Pure tranquility except in its southern end, which is next to the Phuket International Airport and where there is an excellent viewpoint to observe the takeoff and landing of the planes by the sea. It is not a perfect beach, but on sunny days it looks really pretty.

7️⃣ Banana Rock Beach

The small beach of Banana Rock is one of our favorites: a small almost virgin cove less than 200 meters long. To access it, you have to park on the road and walk down for about 50 meters. The road that leads to it is not bad either. It is the best of Phuket! It is a little known beach and its access is somewhat more difficult than in the previous ones, so it is usually less crowded and quieter.

8️⃣ Nai Harn Beach

It is a very beautiful beach where despite having a large resort there is an atmosphere of a quiet, isolated beach in a natural environment. Highly recommended! From May to October, the rainy season, it is a very popular beach with surfers. There is some offer of accommodation, but little. What there are usually are beach umbrellas for those who come to enjoy this very quiet beach.

Government has huge plans to turn Phuket into a world-class tourism hub

The Thai government plans to invest heavily in transforming Phuket into a world-class tourism hub, according to thansettakij.com news website.

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin's team visited Phuket and Phang Nga for the second time on September 29, just a month after their initial visit on August 25-26. This signals a clear commitment to expedite various projects with a budget in trillions of baht, aiming to elevate Phuket to a global city, stimulate tourism, and become a centre for spreading prosperity to the Andaman region, Thansettakij reported.

The strategy to elevate Phuket to a global city in the 2023-27 Provincial Development Plan focuses on diversifying the local economy, and not relying solely on tourism as in the past. Before the Covid-19 pandemic in 2019, Phuket had welcomed 14.5 million foreign tourists, generating revenue of 422 billion baht, ranking second after Bangkok. The province's gross domestic product was 251 billion baht. However, the pandemic inflicted a severe blow on Phuket, as 97% of its revenue came from tourism. Although tourism in Phuket is expected to recover rapidly and potentially reach 100% recovery in 2024, the lessons learned from Covid-19 led to a shift in Phuket's tourism strategy.

The five-year plan focuses on seven key objectives to generate new income for Phuket:

1. Become a global culinary hub (city of gastronomy)

2. Be a centre for global health and medical tourism (medical & wellness hub)

3. Sports tourism development (sport tourism)

4. Be an international education hub

5. Create value through digital technology (smart city)

6. Become a hub for marine tourism (marina hub)

7. Be a centre for processing and trading tuna in the Asean region, as well as generate revenue from MICE (meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions) activities.

Additionally, the plan aims to promote wellness tourism under the Andaman International Health and Wellness Centre project, a collaboration between the International Health College, Songklanagarind Hospital (Phuket), and the Digital Dental Center of Songklanagarind. The project received a budget approval of 5.1 billion baht on October 11, 2022, with an urgent need to expedite the allocation of funds for the project, Thansettakij said.

Infrastructure development plays a crucial role in achieving these goals. Prime Minister Srettha has been continuously overseeing the acceleration of the transportation infrastructure development plan, which includes seven projects with a combined investment of 148 billion baht, both short-term and long-term, focusing on promoting Andaman tourism.

One of the urgent projects is the "new city - Koh Kaew island - Patong tunnel project”. The budget for this project is 14.67 billion baht, divided into land and construction costs of 5 billion baht and tunnel construction costs of 8.89 billion baht.

The project was initially open to private sector participation, but due to lack of interest the government has decided to invest in the civil works portion of the project. The government will coordinate this project with the "new city - Koh Kaew - Kathu" expressway project, which has been studied, designed, and is currently undergoing legal procedures. This project will require a budget of approximately 35 billion baht to address traffic issues, Thansettakij reported.

Projects related to the handling capacity of three Andaman coast airports include:

1. Expanding the Phuket International Airport (2nd phase). This project will increase the airport’s capacity to handle passengers from 12.5 million to 18 million people a year. An investment of 6.21 billion baht is required, and it is expected to be completed by 2027.

2. Expanding the Krabi International Airport. This project focuses on increasing passenger capacity to 17 million people annually, from the current 5 million with an investment of 2.7 billion baht.

3. Construction of Phang Nga International Airport. Also known as Andaman International Airport, this project is located in Tambon Kok Kloy, Amphur Takua Thung, Phang Nga province, covering an area of about 2,372 acres. It involves diverting a significant portion of the land previously used for government purposes. The airport is designed to handle 40 million passengers a year and requires an investment of 80 billion baht. According to the plan, land expropriation will be completed within 18 months. Airports of Thailand Plc is expected to take approximately seven years to construct the airport.

This comprehensive plan aims to transform Phuket into a diversified and sustainable economy, not solely reliant on tourism, ensuring long-term economic stability for the province, Thansettakij said.

8 Best Beaches Around Phuket, Thailand

D ubbed the “Pearl of the Andamans,” Thailand’s largest island, Phuket, has an abundance of gorgeous coastlines and spectacular beaches to enjoy. The island is, after all, Thailand’s top holiday destination.

Phuket has over 30 beaches, each with something different to offer, with the best on the Andaman Sea-facing west coast. Many have accommodations, activities, and entertainment in their immediate vicinity, making them one-stop holiday destinations. Starting in the southwest corner, this best beach guide for Phuket includes a few personal favorites.

1. Nai Harn

Nai Harn has become a popular beach destination on the southern end of Phuket’s west coast. With feather-soft sand and shallow clear blue waters, it’s no wonder visitors and locals head to this beach haven. Finding a comfy spot to spread your towel is easy and the small stalls beyond the beach’s casuarina tree line mean refreshments, tasty snacks, and street food are on hand. Another plus is the on-duty lifeguards during the high season.

With only a handful of hotels dotting the surrounding green hills, Nai Harn retains its authentic local atmosphere. As a sheltered bay, yachts and fishing boats anchor here in the high season’s calm waters. The nearby Nai Harn Lake, another shady respite, is popular with locals during Thai festival celebrations like Loi Krathong in November.

Pro Tip: Before returning to your hotel at the end of the day, take a 2-mile detour up to nearby Cape Phrom Thep — Phuket’s most famous sunset viewpoint.

2. Kata Beach

Kata Beach is the next major beach destination heading north from Nai Harn. There are two Kata beaches: the smaller and less congested Kata Noi to the south and the pandanus and tropical almond-tree-lined Kata Yai to the north, where most of the action can be found. Both beaches are outstanding.

The shallow seas off Kata Yai allow more accessible, safer snorkeling in the nearby coral reefs off the northern and southern ends of the beach. You can also enjoy surfing, stand-up paddle boarding, diving, and swimming. Pu Island sits just offshore of Kata Yai, adding another element to your sunset viewing and photography. Parallel to the beach, Kata Road hosts most of Kata Yai’s bars, restaurants, hotels, and resort offerings. Everything you need is in the immediate vicinity.

Pro Tip: Some of Phuket’s most spectacular viewpoints are along the winding hilltop road between Nai Harn and Kata Beach. Above Kata Noi, several hillside bars and restaurants with spellbinding Andaman Sea views offer excellent Thai food and refreshing beverages.

3. Karon Beach

Positioned between Kata and Patong Beaches, Karon Beach is almost perfectly straight, with 2 miles of the typical soft, golden sand this region is famous for. The overall vibe is easygoing, with long stretches of beach free of crowds.

A popular venue for watersports like windsurfing, parasailing, wakeboarding, and waterskiing, Karon’s compact sands are also well-suited for beach volleyball and it’s often used for international championship matches. The “sport” of relaxing is similarly easy on Karon.

Karon has a great selection of hotels and resorts to suit most budgets. The beach road adjacent to the southern and central sections offers a good selection of Thai eateries and seafood restaurants. Everything you need is in the neighborhood, making Karon particularly appealing to families.

4. Freedom Beach

Rated as one of Phuket’s most beautiful beaches, Freedom Beach is a hidden gem. It is only accessible via a 10-minute, long-tail boat ride from neighboring Patong or Karon, or a hike along a rough forest trail across private land.

Given the extra effort required to access the 330-yard-long secluded cove, this little touch of heaven is relatively quiet — crowd and noise-wise. People come to Freedom to swim, snorkel, and laze on the soft white sand, away from the bustle of the main beaches. You can eat on the sand at one of the street food stalls or drop into the third-generation Barefoot Bistro and organic farm at the end of the beach.

Pro Tip: The return long-tail boat rides typically cost 200 THB (less than 6 USD). Simply tell the boat driver a pickup time and he will return. Sea access is only available during the high season.

5. Patong Beach

Patong is Phuket’s most famous beach, and at 1.77 miles long, there is room for everyone. With a distinct party vibe, it’s the place to see and be seen. Bustling Patong Beach is activity central with jet skiing, surfing, or parasailing available off the beach. Roving vendors sell snacks, drinks, and sarongs, or you can get a massage in Salas under the trees separating the beach and Thaweewong Road.

As well as the water activities, Patong is Phuket’s number-one party zone with multiple attractions, restaurants and bars, and the famous (or infamous) busy night scene on Bangla Road. An abundance of accommodation options can be found in the streets around the beach, from budget to all-inclusive hotels and luxury resorts.

Pro Tip: While consistently busy, Patong can be even more crowded in the late afternoon as visitors from around the island descend to watch the Sun sink below the horizon. For a quieter and equally spectacular sunset spot, pop over to nearby Kamala.

6. Kamala Beach

Head north from Patong along the cliff-edged millionaire’s row to the long (just under 2 miles), wide, and soft pale sands of Kamala Beach. Fringed by casuarina and coconut trees, the beach offers plenty of space for those seeking a more low-key beach experience. And as the sea is clear and shallow, with no sudden drop-off, it is popular with couples and families. For surfers, Kamala also boasts beginner and intermediate surf breaks.

Kamala has excellent Thai and international restaurants on the beach’s edge; ideal for daytime grazing or dinner under the stars. The beach road at Kamala’s southern end hosts budget hotels plus a busy bar and restaurant scene. Novotel Kamala and the upmarket InterContinental Phuket Resort have prime beachfront locations at the beach’s northern end.

Pro Tip: Those seeking an Ibiza-style beach club experience will find Café Del Mar on Kamala Beach the ideal spot. Just steps from the sand, comfortable lounge chairs surround a stunning swimming pool with onsite dining and the opportunity to party well into the night.

7. Surin Beach

Surin Beach’s exceptional water clarity makes it popular for swimming and snorkeling in the high season. This once-famous party beach was cleared of illegally erected restaurants, bars, and beach clubs almost 10 years ago. Surin’s natural beauty now shines with turquoise water, impeccable sand, and palm trees, complemented by just a handful of restaurants and massage salons.

Motorized watersports are rare around Surin Beach, with kayaks and surfboards more common. People watching and celebrity spotting is a new beach sport, thanks to nearby high-end resorts like Amanpuri and The Surin.

8. Nai Yang Beach

Further north, near Phuket International Airport , is the beachside Sirinath National Park. Bordering this park on the southern side is Nai Yang Beach — one of my favorites in Phuket. The casuarina-shaded beach gives a glimpse of what Phuket may have been before mass tourism — and there’s a lot to like.

Safe, shallow, clean water is ideal for families, plus the quiet green of the national park beachfront campgrounds adds to the restive nature of Nai Yang Beach. This 1.5-mile sandy crescent also offers toes-in-the-sand restaurants and bars, plus the usual complement of beach massage and other vendors.

The Slate and Marriott Nai Yang are luxury resort accommodation options, along with a good selection of affordable hotels and resorts a little further from the beach. Nai Yang is a beautiful hideaway but with enough to do to not feel isolated.

When To Visit

Phuket is open to visitors year-round. You will never be cold in its tropical climate, with the coolest nights dropping a very comfortable 77 degrees Fahrenheit and the hottest days peaking around 93 degrees Fahrenheit.

May to October are monsoon seasons, and although accommodation and other holiday-related prices are very enticing, the ocean can be rough with currents and undertows, plus poor water visibility.

The best time to visit Phuket is the high season between November and April when weather conditions are ideal for beach activities like swimming, water sports, and boating. Notably, the island is big enough to not feel overly crowded during the high season. I recommend visiting when your beach experience is at its best.

China’s Outbound Tourism Rebounds with Visa-Free Boom and Surge in Middle East Travel

2024 may be the first “back to normal" year for China's outbound travel since the pandemic, and Chinese tourists are leaning towards destinations with simpler visa processes.

Chinese outbound tourism is steadily rebounding from the effects of the pandemic, with projections indicating a return to pre-pandemic levels by the end of 2025.

Research conducted by Dragon Trail International suggests that China’s outbound tourism is expected to reach approximately 80% of pre-pandemic levels by the end of this year.

According to China’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism, there were 3.6 million outbound trips taken during the Chinese new year period, which is just 57% of 2019’s 6.3 million trips.

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is emerging as a key destination for Chinese travelers, alongside traditionally popular outbound markets like Thailand and Malaysia, according to data from online travel agencies Ctrip, Tongcheng, Tuniu, Mafengwo, and Zuzuche.

“The UAE’s visa-free policy for Chinese visitors, coupled with robust flight connections, contributes to its appeal,” said Sienna Parulis-Cook, director of marketing and communications of Dragon Trail.

Chinese actress Liu Yifei was appointed as the tourism ambassador for UAE capital, Abu Dhabi, last year. The Abu Dhabi Department of Culture and Tourism showcased a promotional video featuring Liu on China’s equivalent of Twitter, Weibo. In a week, the video garnered 7.9 million views and was shared 32,000 times.

Mafengwo’s list of top 20 outbound destinations with increasing demand for Chinese New Year compared to one year earlier includes the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Egypt, and Morocco. All of these five countries offer visa-free entry or visas on arrival to Chinese citizens.

Qunar reported that outbound orders for the UAE, Egypt, and Morocco were three times higher than the year before, with a 10-fold increase for Dubai.

Fliggy reported that travel orders for Egypt increased by 15 times year on year. And Zuzuche’s top 10 outbound destinations with the highest growth rates for car rentals included Abu Dhabi and Riyadh.

Research by Oxford Economics suggests that outbound travel from China will nearly double in 2024 compared to the previous year, with the Middle East expected to lead the global recovery in Chinese inbound tourism.

ForwardKeys’ data indicates that Chinese arrivals to the Middle East have already surpassed 2019 levels, with Cairo experiencing a notable increase in arrivals.

The Arabian Travel Market in Dubai taking place from May 6 anticipates twice the number of Chinese exhibitors and travel professionals, compared to its 2019 show.

Visa Relaxation

Furthermore, the relaxation of visa requirements in Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand has also contributed to increased Chinese tourist arrivals during the Chinese New Year break, as noted by Dragon Trail.

“While 2023 was the year when China reopened following the Covid-19 pandemic lockdown, it was only in 2024 that the country celebrated its first Chinese New Year with no pandemic-related restrictions on outbound travel,” Cook said.

During the recent Chinese New Year period, data from Tourism Authority of Thailand showed that over 1 million international tourists visited Thailand, of which more than 200,000 were from China.

Average spending by Chinese tourists increased by 15% from 2019 and the top visited cities in Thailand were Bangkok, Phuket, Chonburi, Chiangmai and Krabi.

Similarly, Singapore and Malaysia saw a surge in travel bookings following the implementation of visa-free policies.

Online travel agency Qunar reported that bookings for travel to Singapore were 29 times greater than in 2023, with bookings to Malaysia up by 20 times.

Flight data reported by ForwardKeys showed a 24% year-on-year growth for Chinese arrivals to Kuala Lumpur.

The Next Big Holiday Season

While outbound trips taken during the new year period were just 57% of 2019 numbers, the domestic trips this year, surpassed pre-pandemic levels by 19%.

Looking ahead, the upcoming five-day Labor Day holiday that begins from May 1 and the summer travel season are expected to further drive Chinese outbound tourism, with summer being the most popular time for international travel, according to Tongcheng.
