Tom Cruise reprised his hilarious Tropic Thunder alter ego, Les Grossman, at the MTV Movie Awards last night, for a scene-stealing performance with Jennifer Lopez.

Mr Cruise launched himself into the high-energy choreographed routine alongside Jen , who was performing her single, Get Right.

Dressed in a barely-there sparkly mini dress and silver thigh-high boots, Jen wowed the crowds , while Tom, as Les Grossman opted for less than flattering high waisted tuxedo trousers and braces. Nice!

Katie Holmes was spotted laughing and cheering from the front row as the pair shook their booty and had the audience in stitches.

The dramatic routine ended when Tom gamely attempted (but didn't quite make) the splits.

Tom Cruise, we salute your hip-hop moves

M aybe we weren't ready for Destiny's Child's jelly, but, my God, we were for Tom Cruise's. And at last, the world got it at the MTV awards this weekend when the Cruisemeister took to the stage and shook his money-maker, giving Jennifer Lopez a run for her jelly-shaking money as the two of them jutted and wiggled to that booty-bumping anthem Get Back by Ludacris for, frankly, no discernible reason.

While some celebrities get more rightwing, plastic or fond of being photographed drunk with college girls as they age, the once-freakishly-controlled Cruise has taken the more unexpected route of becoming a big old extrovert. Perhaps it's the love of a good woman. Perhaps his thetan told him that jumping on Oprah's sofa, reprising a tune from Damn Yankees with Katie Holmes and grinding with J-Lo was the way to reach a higher plain.

Whatever, not since Risky Business has the world been treated to such exposure of the Cruise tush in action as it was this Sunday, interspersed with some distinctly – and I'm using this phrase with caution – camp mincing.

Ostensibly, Cruise was making a homage to his character from Tropic Thunder, replete with fake bald spot and tux'n'trainers combo. But seeing as that film came out two years ago, and judging from the expression of joy on Cruise's face as he high-kicked with Lopez, this was just something he wanted to do.

For devoted Cruise fans, this is all just brilliant. Once it was hard to justify the Cruise love when he was best known offscreen for his rants about psychiatry (anti) and Scientology (pro). But how can anyone not love a 47-year-old man who does hip-hop splits while wearing a bald headpiece and clearly doesn't give a damn how he looks? As Ludacris says in the song, "Get back, you don't know me like that." Well Tom, now we do.

Cruise and J. Lo’s ‘We’re Relevant!’ Dance

After a red-carpet show full of young, relevant stars (and Jersey Shore cast members — three cheers for the awesome first ten minutes of season two !), the MTV Movie Awards started with a pre-filmed segment featuring a bald, fat, hairy Tom Cruise, dressed in his Les Grossman movie-producer costume from Tropic Thunder . Cruise, whose Knight and Day opens June 25, was clearly trying to appeal to the moviegoing kiddies by reprising his most subversive role, one that cleansed the public’s palate of much of his couch jumping and Scientology ranting and actually seemed pretty cool and funny at the time. (Plus, it involved lots of swearing, which is clearly the best way to the youngsters’ hearts.) But Tropic Thunder came out in August of 2008, nearly two years ago, so seeing Cruise in costume from that movie felt stale and somewhat odd. Did the teenagers watching instantly remember who he was? Did the adults? Robert Downey Jr. in blackface is the iconic lasting visual from Tropic Thunder , so the synapses fired by Cruise’s appearance were more, “Oh, wait, I think I remember: Is that the character from that movie with Robert Downey Jr. in blackface?”

A bit later on in the show, The Hangover ’s Ed Helms and Ken Jeong appeared to perform a comedic song and interpretive dance, but were interrupted by Cruise as Grossman (the conceit being that Grossman was the one producing the awards and felt that the Helms-Jeong song wasn’t worthy of airtime). Cruise appeared live onstage as Grossman called a beat from Ludacris and began an elaborately choreographed hip-hop dance, with callback moves from the closing credits of Tropic Thunder — you know, that movie with Robert Downey Jr. in blackface? Suddenly, from behind a see-through screen appeared Jennifer Lopez, in a head-to-toe “Jenny From the Block” getup (complete with a bejeweled walking stick), and she and Cruise-as-Grossman proceeded to shimmy in tandem for what seemed like hours. Lopez, even more so than Cruise, is a star in need of some younger-fan (or any fan, really) love, so the pairing of these stars together — choreographed with walking sticks, of all things! — fully reinforced the manic, semi-desperate PR strategy behind the skit: They were like a super-team of nineties stars attempting to do whatever possible to get back in the young buying public’s good graces. But one question remains: Why did Christina Aguilera opt to sing alone rather than join these two? Strength in numbers!

Jennifer Lopez: Tom Cruise Was “Intense, Crazy” Dancing at MTV Awards

Looks like Katie Holmes isn't the only woman impressed with Tom Cruise 's daring dance moves at Sunday's MTV Movie Awards.

So is his dancing partner Jennifer Lopez !

"Working with Tom was amazing!" Lopez, 40, gushes to Extra . "I'm such a hard worker, and I'm kind of intense about my job. It's great to work with someone who is just as intense and passionate and crazy about getting everything right."

A month before the show, the 47-year-old Cruise ­- who dressed as his potbellied film producer Les Grossman for the act — called the singer personally to convince her to join him on stage.

The new Us Weekly reports the two rehearsed together for the first time just two days before the show.

"I said OK, we'd do a little mash-up of [Ludacris' 'Get Back' and Lopez's 'Get Right']," Lopez recalls. "I come out and sing a little and then we dance together. But [I told him] you have to learn this cane dance that I do n the video.

"That is one of the hardest routines. But he did it," she adds. "He really, really did it. And he did a great job! I was really proud of him."

On Thursday, Paramount Pictures and MTV Films announced that a movie centering on Grossman is in the works. Grossman was first introduced in the 2008 Ben Stiller comedy Tropic Thunder .

"Les Grossman's life story is an inspiring tale of the classic human struggle to achieve greatness against all odds," Stiller, who will co-produce the film, tells Us in a statement. "He has assured me he plans to quote, 'F**king kill the sh*t out of this movie and make Citizen f**king Kane look like a piece of crap home movie by the time we are done.' I am honored to be working with him."

From Tom Cruise breakdancing to Spice Girls reuniting, reports from Victoria Beckham's bash capture imagination

Tom Cruise breakdancing, a Spice Girls reunion and tons of A-list celebrities gathering in one location have social media and the general public in awe over Victoria Beckham's 50th birthday party.

Beckham, who celebrated half a century over the weekend, posted about the luxurious soiree Sunday on Instagram.

But some of the most buzzworthy moments went intentionally unrecorded.

"I don’t think I’ve ever felt as loved as I did last night," Beckham's post said. "Thank you all for coming from near and so far!! X"

In the post, Beckham shared pictures of her with actor Eva Longoria, celebrity Chef Gordon Ramsay, her husband, soccer star David Beckham and some of the couple's children.

In another Instagram post, Beckham shared a picture of her and the four other members of the English pop group, the Spice Girls.

"The best gift to be reunited!! Thank you to all my friends and family for celebrating with me. Kisses! xxx," Beckham's post about the Spice Girls said.

Guests 'absolutely dumbfounded' by Tom Cruise's dancing, reports say

Not included in either post were other famous attendees who came to celebrate with the Beckhams at Oswald’s, a private member’s club owned by Robin Birley in London's Mayfair district.

Oswald's is strict about taking photos and allowing social media within the venue , according to the club's member's privacy notice.

Actors Tom Cruise and Salma Hayek both made an appearance at Beckham's party and while one left an impression with their outfit, the other left it all on the dance floor, the Daily Mail reported.

Cruise, who turned 61 in July 2023, stunned guests when he began demonstrating "a series of breakdancing moves, culminating in splits," the outlet said.

"People were absolutely dumbfounded," one guest told the Daily Mail.

Social media reacts to Tom Cruise's 'split mania' and not receiving an invite to Victoria Beckham's party

While no photos or videos of Cruise dancing exist online, social media users continue to poke fun at the expense of the "Mission Impossible" movie star. An X user who goes by @Douggernaut_2 posted a clip of actor Mike Myers dancing in the film "Austin Powers" and said, "Tom Cruise arriving at Victoria Beckham's bday."

Several social media users hearkened back to when Cruise played the Les Grossman character in the 2008 comedy movie "Tropic Thunder." Cruise would hilariously reprise the character during the 2010 MTV Movie Awards and dance to rapper Ludacris' song "Get Back."

"Remember when Tom Cruise did this," X user @charletty_ said Monday in a post reacting to the video of Cruise's full dance routine at the awards show.

During the routine with singer and actress Jennifer Lopez, Cruise does a split on stage. X user @danilo_parks said Monday in a post, "It's real Tom Cruise does the splits mania out there today."

In addition to seeing Cruise do splits and the Spice Girls perform, guests also received goody bags full of Beckham's branded products, including a candle and a fragrance, the Telegraph reported.

All the fun has people wondering where their invite was to Beckham's birthday party, including X user @StaceyVaselaney who said, "I’m sitting here shaking my head wondering why wasn’t I invited to Victoria Beckham’s 50th birthday party."
