Former Middlebury Nordic Skier Sophia Laukli wins “Final Climb” of Tour de Ski race in Val di Fiemme

Nordic Focus

On Jan. 7, 2023, former Middlebury Nordic athlete Sophia Laukli became the youngest American to win an individual cross-country World Cup race and the first to win the “Final Climb” of the Tour de Ski race in Val di Fiemme, Italy.

Laukli suited up as a Panther for the 2019–2020 season before transferring to the University of Utah to graduate as a member of the class of 2023 there. While at Middlebury, Laukli dominated the Eastern region, earning the top spot in both freestyle and classic events, playing a critical role in Middlebury’s winning 3x5 relay team in the Williams Carnival, and taking four straight victories over three Carnival competitions.

She was named the Eastern Intercollegiate Ski Association (EISA) Rookie of the Year in 2020 and received her first of five career All-American recognitions that same year. While at Utah, she was a critical part of two NCAA Championship-winning teams and bagged the 2022 individual title in women's 15K freestyle.

Since her World Cup debut as a member of the U.S. Ski Team in 2021, Laukli has transitioned smoothly from her impressive NCAA career and made an excellent impression on the World Cup circuit. Most recently, she made waves by completing the seven-stage Tour de Ski: a multi-stage competition akin to the Tour de France that takes place as part of the International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) Cross-Country World Cup. The race is among the most prestigious in the sport and includes a variety of individual sprints, pursuit races and mass starts, with the overall winner determined by the total points earned throughout the tour.

If the other stages of the Tour de Ski are hard, then the stage at Val di Fiemme is downright Herculean. A grueling 3.6 km climb preceded by seven kilometers of flat terrain and pitching up to grades of 28%, the “Final Climb,” as it has come to be known, is the crown jewel of the race. The stage may be daunting for some, but as an honest test of cardiovascular endurance, the stage was perfect for Sophia Laukli. This was her third career start at Val Di Fiemme, undoubtedly aiding her confidence at the start of the race and her hunger to win a track that seamlessly played to her strength in uphill sections.

“I was equally nervous and pretty stressed on the start line,” Laukli said. “But I think it was mostly because I was just excited to see what I could do–in the back of my mind, I knew that on a really good day, I had a chance to win the stage.”

As the gap widened between Laukli and her competition in the final leg of the race, she pushed across the finish line with an unrelenting effort to find the top of the podium. Within 500 meters of the finish line, her endurance allowed her to leave Norwegian leader Heidi Weng in the dust and use the remainder of her energy to carry her toward victory.

Winning the final stage by 17.1 seconds with a time of 38:16.5, Laukli landed 14th overall in the Tour de Ski, which places her in 22nd place overall among women in the World Cup standings and third among American skiers, behind Jessie Diggins (No. 1) and Rosie Brennan (No. 3).

Laukli described the feeling of her victory, citing the first several minutes before the weight of her achievement had sunk in. “It is such a unique race and any first World Cup win takes a while to sink in, but I do know it will be one of my most memorable races,” she said.

From an outstanding performance in a truly gritty event, Laukli has certainly solidified herself as a contender for top finishes in all skate and classic distance races. Going forward, she is hoping to channel this momentum gained from her first World Cup victory into a successful rest of her World Cup season, which will continue through March.

Next, the World Cup schedule will bring Laukli closer to home for competitions in Canmore, Canada and Minneapolis beginning on Feb. 9.

Cross-country skiing: Frida Karlsson wins ‘Tour de Ski’ after final climb thriller in Val di Fiemme (Italy) 1 min read

tour de ski val di fiemme final climb

Frida Karlsson has won the ‘ Tour de Ski ‘ 2023, the prestigious touring event that takes place at the turn of the year and includes six stages, also valid for the World Cup in cross-country skiing. The 23-year-old Swede took the lead at the last event, with the favour of prediction and an advantage of 1’12” over Norway’s Tiril Udnes Weng and 1’27” over Finland’s Kerttu Niskanen. The ascent of Cermis was the only real threat, an effort that Karlsson had never before undergone in her career: the Swede took the climb in the lead and dictated the pace precisely to avoid any surprises, even impressing along a stretch with an average gradient of 26.5%. At one point Karlsson, Frenchwoman Delphine Claudel (later stage winner) and Weng remained in the lead. With 1.2 kilometres to go, Karlsson went into deep crisis: Weng and Niskanen attacked her, trying to make up the minute’s gap in the standings and attempting to overturn the overall ‘Tour de Ski’ ranking in its closing stages. Karlsson went into a blackout in the last 700 metres and arrived exhausted at the finish line, but still managed to win the ‘Tour de Ski’ with a lead of 33″ over Niskanen and 47″ over Weng. Karlsson collapsed to the ground shortly after the finish line and was attended to by the medical staff, struggling to get up and failing to make it to the podium ceremony: a malaise caused by the great effort made on the Cermis and which caused some concern.

Tour de Ski 2024: All the Dates, Distances and Facts.

7 stages in 9 days and 3 locations. On the menu there are races of all sorts: skate, classic, sprint, distance, and the iconic brutal climb up Alpe Cermis in Val di Fiemme (ITA).

The Tour de Ski is an annual highlight for many racers, but in a season with no major international championships, the prestigious stage race becomes even more important.

The schedule for the 18th edition of the FIS cross-country stage race features 7 stages in 9 days and as with all the previous 17 editions of the Tour de Ski, there will be blood, sweat, tears, duels and drama before the overall winners receive their trophies.

See complete schedule day by day below

The Tour de Ski is designed to be the ultimate test of skills, versatility, endurance and perseverance. Over the course of the various stages, skiers face both sprints, distance races, mass start and individual start events in both skate and classic technique. It all leads to the brutal finish of the competition with the infamous final stage up the alpine run Alpe Cermis.

For several of the Madshus racers, the Tour de Ski carries a little extra novelty:

Harald Østberg Amundsen (NOR), who was ninth overall in his first Tour de Ski two years ago, is super excited about the upcoming stage race.

“In my head, the Tour de Ski is super important. It's a concept that I find really exciting, and the Tour schedule for this season should fit my strengths to a T. The first time I did the Tour, I was ninth overall, but that's two years ago and I've come a long way since then,” says the 25-year-old, and continues:

“In order to excel in the Tour de Ski, you have to handle everything from sprints to distance events, and all the different formats. I have done pretty well in sprint races lately, and I've improved my classic technique a lot, two areas that I've put a lot of effort into and that are key in order to challenge the overall favorites. I think I'm in a position to do that now, and that fires me up a lot.”

Ben Ogden (USA) posted his best-ever result in a World Cup individual race during the Tour de Ski last year. In brutal conditions on day three of the 2023 Tour de Ski, the 22-year-old from Vermont was 6th in the 10-kilometer classic race in Oberstdorf (GER).

And finally, Edvin Anger (SWE) is looking at his first go at the Tour de Ski. Last year, the 21-year-old was named to the Swedish team to the 2023 World Championships just days before the Tour. He therefore opted to sit out the stage race in order to prepare for his first major championship at the elite level.

All about the final climb of Alpe Cermis The brutal Alpe Cermis signature stage of the Tour de Ski has been a part of the stage race since the very first Tour de Ski edition, back in 2007.

The final stage of the 2024 Tour de Ski is a little more than eight kilometers. The course starts at the World Cup stadium in Val di Fiemme. After a lap on the World Cup trails, the course joins the Marcialonga trail for about five kilometers down the valley before making a hard left. During the final 2.5 kilometers of the stage, the course climbs more than 400 meters.

Here is what you need to know The 2024 Tour de Ski starts in Toblach (ITA) on December 30, and concludes in Val di Fiemme (ITA) on January 7.
