Stone Town Lukmann's restaurant

Stone Town, or Zanzibar City, is the capital of the island of Zanzibar. Any trip to Zanzibar will start in Stone Town which is full of rich history, architectural wonders, and culture. It was the port of trade between east and west in olden times, as well as the hub for slave trading to the Middle East.

Most people skip Stone Town, electing to visit the beautiful beach resorts that Zanzibar has to offer. However, if you have time, I would recommend at last a day or two in Stone Town to visit the sights here!

In addition, make sure to read my comprehensive guide on traveling Zanzibar if you are planning to visit!

History of Stone Town

Stone Town’s history is absolutely fascinating. The first accounts of Arab traders in the 9th century referred to Zanzibar as the land of Zenj or the “coast of black people”. Its strategic location in the center of East Africa led it to be the ultimate fusion of Arab, Indian, European, and African cultures that you still see to this day.

Stone Town Freddy Mercury

The island became famous as a slave auction port of Africans that became hugely profitable. The island changed hands throughout the ages but came under the control of the Omani sultanate for most of the 18th and 19th century where slave trading still dominated.

The British eventually took control of the island outlawing slave trading. It was in this time at the end of the 19th century that the trade of spices became the dominant economic engine.

Stone Town  gets its name from the ornate houses built with local  stone  by Arab traders and slavers during the 19th Century. It is estimated that around 600,000 slaves were sold through  Zanzibar  between 1830-1863.

Is Stone Town Safe to Walk Around?

Stone Town streets

The first thing that people may ask is whether Stone Town is safe for tourists to visit. You can read here that  yes, it is safe.  Stone Town is the capital of Zanzibar and is packed with people. There is very little if any violent crime against tourists. Like anywhere else in the world, just have your wits about you when it comes to your possessions.

Stone Town streets

During the day and night, I walked around everywhere by myself without any issue. I never felt unsafe at any point. There are plenty of people that will go up to you to hustle tours and souvenirs but that is just part of the whole process.

Do girls have to cover up?

Stone Town is probably the most traditional part of the island when it comes to observing Muslim traditions. It’s advised that women and men wear longer clothing to respect local traditions.

Nevertheless, as someone who sweats profusely in high heat, I only wore tank tops while walking around Stone Town. No one ever gave me looks about it. I saw plenty of girls that wore shorter clothing and don’t think they had much issue either. I think if you want to be fully respectable to local customs, wear something to cover up the knees and shoulder. If you don’t do it, nothing will happen to you either.

Walking through Stone Town

Now that you know Stone Town is perfectly safe to walk around, it’s time to explore.

Stone Town fort

Walking around Zanzibar’s famous Stone Town is an architecture buff’s delight – the variety of building styles on view provides a whistle-stop tour of the island’s long and varied history. Arab mansions with high, blank white walls sit next to the lacy wooden balconies and colourful stained glass windows of grand Indian residences.

If you look hard enough, you’ll even be able to glance further back in history and find some remnants of the heyday of the Swahili civilisation, which ruled supreme in this part of Africa as long ago as the 10th century.

Stone Town markets

For most visitors Zanzibar Town means Stone Town, the historic quarter where you can wander for hours through a maze of narrow streets, easily losing yourself in centuries of history.

Visiting the night market of Forodhani

Faradhani Market Stone Town

Without a doubt, one of the most popular things to do in Stone Town is to visit the Forodhani night market. Located across the street from the old fort on the pier, this area in the park transforms into a night market serving out BBQ Seafoods, Schwarmas, juices, fruits, and Zanzibar pizza.

Faradhani Market Stone Town

It spans a large square and you will see the lights and smell the fresh food from far away. It’s not nearly as big as I had thought as I was picturing something like the outdoor hawker markets in Singapore.  It attracts a mix of locals and tourists but in high season, expect mostly tourists coming here. The prices are high in comparison to what you get elsewhere so make sure to know what prices to expect before going (and bargain!)

There are numerous stalls and they are all essentially serving the same things. Among the seafood stalls, you’ll see fresh kebabs (mishkaki) of seafood like prawns, calamari, fish etc. You’ll also have chicken, beef, lamb and many other varieties. Some stalls will have lobster or crabs in addition to all of this. To top it off, you’ll have numerous options like rice, chips, and chapatis to choose from. You can choose whatever you want and they will grill everything to serve to you on a plate.

Faradhani Market Stone Town

There are five or six different schawarma stands that serve chicken or beef on a vertical spit. From what it seemed, they are mostly the same.

Finally, there are the Zanzibar pizza stations which are essentially dough stuffed with veggies, meat/seafood, cheese, and topped with an egg. They’re grilled on a pan and served sliced up. I actually really liked these things.

Faradhani Market Stone Town

I tried a little bit of everything at these stalls and to be honest, the best thing were the schawarmas. I just think the seafood is a bit overpriced for what it is and the quality is questionable because who knows what they do with unsold food of the night!

What do things cost at Forodhani Market?

tour guide stone town zanzibar

Some of the items have prices already listed like Schwarma’s and Zanzibar pizza. Schwarma is 3500 TZS (~$1.5) and Zanzibar pizzas are anywhere from 5000 TZS to 10000 TZS depending on the filling ($2 to $4).

Seafood on the other hand is all negotiable. I paid roughly 8000 TZS for a kebab of prawns, 500 TZS for a small beef mishkaki, 2000 TZS for a stick of chicken. Everything is negotiable within reason of course. If they didn’t like my price, I just simply walked to the stall next to it and they came running back.

Is it worth a visit?

Yes I absolutely think the night market is worth a visit at least for a night. Yes it’s mostly for tourists, but it’s a cool experience and the food is decent.

I came here on both nights I was in Stone Town because I very much liked it. In the end, I think the seafood is average at best. I have no idea how long it’s been sitting out and it didn’t taste astounding or anything. I would not get the seafood again.

However, I thought the schwarma’s were absolutely delicious. I ended up eating these most of the time because they were tasty and cheap. I tried numerous schwarma’s from different stands and they are mostly of similar taste. Of course, I love fresh sugarcane juice which reminds me of the hawker markets in Singapore.

Lukmann’s Restaurant

tour guide stone town zanzibar

If the loud and hectic Faradhani night market is not your thing, then pay a visit to Lukmann’s restaurant down the street. This is a large open air restaurant that serves all the local dishes that you’ll find at the night market. The prices here are fixed so you don’t need to bargain or worry about being taken advantage of.

lukmann restaurant zanzibar

They have the same schawarma, seafood, mishkaki, curries, fruits, juices etc. as the night market but in a restaurant form. This restaurant attracts a good number of locals and tourists alike with prices that are mostly reasonable.

I came here for lunch and had a little bit of everything while enjoying my beer on their terrace overlooking the town. Not bad!

Emerson Tea House

In the heart of Stone Town is a beautifully restored hotel that once was the home of one of the richest men in the Swahili Empire – Mr Tharia Topan, who served as the principal financial advisor to Sultan Bargash.

Emerson Tea house

It underwent a huge renovation in the 20th century and now is one of the most popular hotels in Zanzibar. They have two buildings, but the one to visit is the tea house on Hurumzi.

emerson tea house

Walk to the top of this building and you’ll be at the highest point in Stone Town. The tea house which offers drinks, tea, and delicious Swahili cuisine, has 360 degree of the city. It’s a traditional sit on the floor with comfortable Arabian style cushions type of restaurant and is the perfect place to enjoy a sundowner.

In peak season, this place is packed for lunch and dinner so make sure to make reservations ahead of time. The cost was $15 for a lunch tasting and reasonable prices for drinks in addition

Slave Market Museum

Slave museum stone town

Another must see attraction in Stone Town is a visit to the old slave market. Zanzibar, unfortunately, has some dark history to it and used to be one of the largest markets for trading slaves back in the 18th century. Africans would be rounded up from all around the continent, some even thousands of miles inland, and would be brought to Zanzibar to be auctioned off before being shipped off to likely the colonies in the Americas.

As soon as we arrived, it felt creepy, like you could almost feel that monstrosities were performed here at one point. There’s a lot of reading material here and everything is absolutely fascinating. I remember learning all about the dark period in man’s history known as colonialism and where I was standing was one of the main hubs of it.

A statue monument dedicated to the slave pits.

On our drive from Arusha to Dar Es Salaam, we drove through the town of Bagamoyo which served as an important stop in the slave trade as this would be the last stop before slaves were taken to Zanzibar where they were sold. Bagamoyo is swahili and translates to “lay down your heart” because it was here that slaves would abandon any remaining hope of freedom or escape. The ones that were fit enough to make it here would then be crammed like sardines in boats bound for Stone Town.

Once they reached Stone Town, they were put in stone cellars about 30 square meters (300 square feet), where they would stuff about 50 or 60 of them with NO windows. Many would die before they were even put on sale. They estimate that 50,000 slaves were sold here a year, and another 50,000 died while trekking through Africa on their way to Zanzibar and estimate something like a hundred million people were either sold or died as slaves until its abolishing in 1876. All in all, a great tour to do. It took about 4-5 hours in total but was totally worth the 35$ for everything that we learned and saw.

Having a drink at the Six Degrees Bar

six degrees stone town

Stone Town is faces west so you can expect some spectacular sunsets to be had. L9cated on the water nearby to the Park Hyatt is the six degrees bar. This restaurant has a rooftop terrace with beautiful views of the sunset.

six degrees stone town

The bar is cozy and has bar seating as well as lounge chairs. The drinks here are very well priced at only $4-5 for a cocktail during their happy horus (5pm-7pm). The food is also decent but I spent most of my time eating schwarmas at the Faradhani food market anyhow.

Where to stay in Stone Town

There are no shortage of accommodation options in Stone Town. As it’s the capital of Zanzibar, expect all budget options to be available here.

If you’re looking for beautiful beaches, palm trees, and idyllic tropical getaways, Stone Town is not where you’ll want to be. There is a small beach here near the Park Hyatt Zanzibar but it’s not that pretty. I would spent a night or two to explore the town, but leave the nice beach part to somewhere like Nungwi or Paje . These are the places that you think of when Zanzibar comes to mind.

Park Hyatt Zanzibar

I would elect to stay in the city center if possible so you can walk everywhere. It will make staying here much more enjoyable.

High end hotels

  • Park Hyatt Stone Town : Probably the nicest hotel in the city. It was the former palace for the sultan of Oman when he controlled Zanzibar over a century ago. It’s traditional but luxurious at the same time. It’s also centrally located and within walking distance to all the sights.
  • Emerson Spice Hotel: The same hotel from the above section about the Emerson Tea house. This hotel is another traditional house that’s been renovated to accommodate guests.

Ultimate Guide to Visiting Stone Town in Zanzibar

Ultimate Guide to Visiting Stone Town in Zanzibar

Stone Town is a special old neighborhood located in Zanzibar City off the coast of mainland Tanzania. This was my first destination during my trip and I can absolutely say it is an amazing place that you shouldn’t skip (like most tourists do)!

I recommend you stay in Stone Town for at least a day or two before heading to the beautiful beaches of Zanzibar like Nungwi . These areas are much more touristic so it’s nice to experience a little slice of a more traditional side of Zanzibar first.

Before you head off, there are some important things you should know about Stone Town. So here’s your ultimate guide to visiting Stone Town in Zanzibar to help you fully enjoy your experience.

Things to Know Before Visiting Stone Tone in Zanzibar

Only bring ‘new’ us dollars & don’t exchange them.

Colorful market in Stone Town, Zanzibar featuring fresh produce.

This piece of advice applies to the whole island of Zanzibar, not just Stone Town, and it’s very useful.

I knew I had to bring dollars, but I had no idea that nobody accepts bills from any series older than the year 2000 .  There’s also no need to exchange your money to Tanzanian shillings as everyone actually prefers dollars .

Prepare to get lost in the maze

The first thing I thought about Stone Town in Zanzibar was that it felt like Medina in Marrakesh . The streets are narrow and winding and I never knew exactly where I was heading .

I was met with vendors inviting me to shop at their stalls on every corner, but thankfully they weren’t pushy when I politely declined.

On my first day, I decided to take a walking tour simply so I wouldn’t get lost and I think it was the best idea I ever had. Not only did it help me to get my bearings a little bit but I also avoided being approached by every man in town as a solo woman walking around.

A narrow winding street where you can easily get lost if you don't have a guide for visiting Stone Town in Zanzibar

Prepare to pay more than the original price on the spot

Unfortunately, Zanzibar is no different than any other place when it comes to bargaining. The island isn’t cheap, the prices are actually comparable to the US . On top of this, you can never be sure how much you’re going to end up paying for everything.

For instance, I was meant to take a shared boat trip to Prison Island for $30. However, when I arrived the guy demanded more money because the other people didn’t show up (I don’t think they were ever going to).

I had a similar situation with my transportation to Nungwi. Despite pre-paying $20 for a shuttle, right before departure I was told that there weren’t enough people and I needed to pay another $10. My advice: no matter what anyone tells you about leaving a deposit, do NOT pay anyone anything in advance, but pay in full on the spot .

Don’t book any tours in advance

I really wanted to make sure that I managed to see and do everything I wanted to do during my time in Zanzibar, so I scheduled a dolphin tour with Zanzibar Ecoculture Tours.

After a week of exchanging emails and arranging my pick-up at 6 am, the guide didn’t show up! I sent many emails afterward but the company never responded so you probably shouldn’t book any tours with them.

I’m even more surprised about the whole situation because I was meant to work with them on press coverage. If I paid for this tour in advance I would have been really angry!

Book your accommodation in advance

A lot of tourists seem to come to Stone Town without reservations with the hope that they will find a hotel upon arrival. During the low season finding a room will be possible without any trouble but you’re still going to overpay a lot .

I stayed in the beautiful Jafferji House located just 5 minutes from the harbor and can highly recommend it. Scroll down to read more about my stay or check out some of my other recommendations for where to stay in Stone Town below.

Things to Do in Stone Town in Zanzibar

1. admire the zanzibari doors.

Why am I recommending that you admire doors? Don’t worry, I’m not crazy – the doors in Stone Town are absolutely marvelous.

You can find three types of doors in town: those influenced by Indians, Arabs, and mixed . All of them are beautiful but you can recognize which is which by looking at their unique characteristics such as flower motifs and studs (once used as a defense against charging war elephants) on the Indian doors and chains on the Arab doors.

During my walking tour , my guide explained a lot about the city’s history and that the chain symbolizes slavery which was a big part of Stone Town’s past.

2. See the House of Wonders

The House of Wonders in Zanzibar was once the biggest building in Stone Town but sadly collapsed in 2020 and now stands in ruins .

What is so special about this house is that at one time it was the most modern building in all of East Africa being the first building to have an elevator and electricity .

The House of Wonders also has a huge entrance for the sultan and his elephant, and incredibly high ceilings. You can see it from the outside but don’t try to get inside, as the building is currently under renovation and its floors and walls are falling down. Nobody knows when it’s going to be finished, but I hope it will be soon.

3. Plan a Visit to Prison Island

Prison Island might not seem like an attraction that everyone would want to see because as the name suggests, it used to be a prison. But today it’s definitely a must-see thing in Zanzibar. Why? This little island located just 30 minutes by boat from Stone Town is home to over a hundred tortoises that you can interact with for as long as you want.

I wasn’t really sure what to expect since I’d already seen a lot of gigantic turtles in the Galapagos Islands , but this was a completely different experience. I was able to hang out with these tortoises for as long as I wanted, massage them, and take lots of photos… including a selfie!

4. Eat at the Night Market in Forodhani Gardens

Instead of eating in your hotel, take a stroll through the Forodhani Gardens located near the port.

From 6 pm onwards the place is full of vendors ready to serve you fresh seafood, Zanzibar pizza, and other amazing delicacies .

When you are looking at all the stalls you will notice that many have menus and prices while some of the seafood stalls do not. Try to avoid eating at stands that do not have prices as they will most likely try to scam you into paying ridiculous prices for your meal.

Recommended Tours:  Food Markets and Street Food Walking Tour Stone Town Night Tour – from Darajani Market till Forodhani

5. Visit the Palace Museum

If you love looking at old, historical buildings then the Palace Museum should be next on your list. Once the Sultan’s residence, the Palace Museum offers a glimpse into the life of Zanzibar’s royal family .

This grand building has a great location along the seafront and inside you can explore a vast collection of artifacts, including furniture, sultan’s robes, and gifts from foreign dignitaries.

6. Learn at the Slave Market

A visit to the Slave Market site in Stone Town is quite a sad experience but as Stone Town was once home to one of the largest Slave markets in the world , it’s important not to look away from the dark history of the East African slave trade.

The site includes the Slave Chambers, where slaves were held before auction, and the Anglican Cathedral, built on the location of the former slave market. The cathedral’s altar marks the exact spot of the whipping post.

7. Explore the Fort of Zanzibar

Built in the 17th century to defend against Portuguese attacks, the Old Fort of Zanzibar is a Stone Town heritage landmark and now serves as a cultural hub for visitors.

Inside, you can find an open-air amphitheater hosting live performances, shops selling local crafts, and art galleries . It’s also a great spot to enjoy panoramic views of the ocean and town.

Anna standing in front of the clear blue waters of Stone Town, Zanzibar

8. Wander around the Hamamni Persian Baths

Don’t get too excited for relaxation as these baths are no longer in use but they are still interesting enough to look at.

Built in the late 19th century with detailed tile and beautiful architecture , the Hamamni Persian baths were once a popular spot for relaxation. Today you can explore the network of rooms, including the hot and cold baths, steam room, and massage areas, learning about the traditional bathing rituals that were an essential part of Swahili life.

9. Shop the Markets for Souvenirs

Exploring the markets of Stone Town should be a must-do during your visit to this intriguing city. There are many different markets to explore but Darajani Market is the heart of Stone Town’s bustling scene , offering an authentic slice of Zanzibari life.

Get ready to haggle over a wide range of souvenirs, from hand-carved wooden items and colorful fabrics to spices and locally-made jewelry.

10. See the Freddie Mercury House

What you might not know is that the legendary Queen frontman Freddie Mercury is actually from Stone Town and you can visit his childhood home .

The house has since been turned into the Freddie Mercury Museum showcasing artifacts from his life and telling the story of his international upbringing and journey to becoming one of the world’s biggest musicians.

11. Cruise in a Dhow

Being so close to the water I am sure you will probably see plenty of dhows which are traditional Arabian boats .

Once used for trade across the Indian Ocean, Dhow boats now take you on scenic tours around the island giving you a different perspective of this beautiful place.I recommend taking a sunset cruise as the sky certainly puts on a show in Stone Town each evening.

Recommended Tours:  Traditional Dhow Sunset Cruise Dhow Sailing Island Tour with BBQ Lunch

12. Check Out St. Joseph’s Cathedral

One last (but not least) architectural marvel to see in Stone Town is St. Joseph’s Cathedral. Built by French missionaries in the late 19th century , the cathedral features beautiful stained glass windows and a towering spire.

Inside you’ll find intricate wood carvings and peaceful prayer areas. But if you want to experience a unique blending of cultures, try to attend a mass here where you will get to listen to some beautiful Swahili hymns.

Where to Stay in Stone Town, Zanzibar

As I already mentioned, I can recommend the beautiful hotel Jafferji House located just 5 minutes from the harbor. This place offers romantic and authentic Zanzibarian decor and looks like a miniature palace .

There are only 10 suites but every single one of them is unique and I had the pleasure of staying on the 2nd floor which has the most spectacular views of the entire house. My room even had a bathtub on a private terrace. If I’m ever back in Stone Town I’d stay there again without a doubt!

Regal decorations of a room in the Jafferji House which is recommended in this guide to visiting Stone Town in Zanzibar

But if Jafferji House is already booked out for your dates or you just need some additional recommendations, here are some other great hotels in Stone Town, Zanzibar.

Park Hyatt Zanzibar – A beachfront luxury hotel that blends modern amenities with traditional Swahili architecture. It offers spacious rooms with ocean views, an infinity pool overlooking the sea, and a spa for relaxation.

Zanzibar Serena Hotel – Located in a restored historic building with breathtaking views of the Indian Ocean, the Zanzibar Serena is known for its exceptional service, serene courtyard pool, and easy access to Stone Town’s landmarks.

Emerson Spice Hotel – Set in a beautifully restored merchant’s house that dates back to the 19th century, each room here is uniquely decorated, blending antique furnishings with Swahili culture. The hotel is also famous for its rooftop tea house, which offers panoramic views of Stone Town and serves a fusion of Zanzibari and international cuisine.

Nice blog and some great tips, I think some of the comments are a bit harsh based on one off experiences. Suggesting people don't book any tours in advance based on your experience of one company I think is very hasty. I've been to Zanzibar many times and every time I've booked a tour in advance and had an amazing experience. So maybe just refer to an individual company and warn people to be careful of booking tours in advance rather than disregarding the hundreds of companies on the island.

Stone Town (Tanzania)

Guide to Stone Town, Zanzibar

tour guide stone town zanzibar

TripSavvy / Christopher Larson

Stone Town is one of the oldest living Swahili towns in East Africa . It's unique winding, narrow streets are adorned with (some crumbling) beautiful buildings. Established by Arab slave and spice traders in the early 19th century, Stone Town is the cultural heart of Zanzibar. It's a UNESCO World Heritage site which has enabled some of the beautiful houses to get a much-needed renovation. It's right on the Indian Ocean and faces Tanzania 's mainland and commercial capital, Dar es Salaam .

Stone Town History

Stone Town gets its name from the ornate houses built with local stone by Arab traders and slavers during the 19th Century. It is estimated that around 600,000 slaves were sold through Zanzibar between 1830-1863. In 1863 a treaty was signed to abolish the slave trade, agreed to by the British and the Omani Sultans that ruled Zanzibar at this time. Stone Town was also an important base used by many European explorers including David Livingstone. The ornate trellises and balconies on some of the buildings reflect this later European influence.

Stone Town's Attractions

All of Stone Town's attractions are within walking distance. You shouldn't miss:

  • Beit-El-Ajaib or 'House of Wonders' - built in the 1870s for Sultan Barghash; it's grand, ornate and imposing. Plans are afoot to turn this into a National Museum.
  • The Anglican Cathedral , built in 1873 by the British on the site of the old slave market.
  • The Nasur NurMohamed Dispensary , built in 1887 by Thaira Thopen, Zanzibar’s richest man at the time. One of the first buildings to get renovated in Stone Town.
  • The Market - hectic and fascinating bazaar, similar to those found in North Africa.

Stone Town Tours

If you don't feel comfortable wandering around Stone Town on your own there are tours available as well as sunset cruises on a Dhow (traditional sailboat used all along the east coast of Africa). Many tours of Stone Town can also be combined with a visit to nearby Spice plantations. Here are some sample tours:

  • Zanzibar Stone Town Tour - run by Utalii Safaris.
  • Day Tour of Stone Town - from Zanizbar Magic
  • Evening Stone Town Tour

Stone Town Hotels

The best hotels in Stone Town are those that have renovated traditional Swahili style homes into small, intimate hotels:

  • Zanzibar Palace Hotel -- Luxury, boutique hotel with lots of style in the heart of Stone Town, has 9 unique rooms.
  • Zanzibar Coffee House -- One of the oldest buildings in Zanzibar in the heart of Stone Town, beautifully renovated, the hotel offers 8 rooms at a mid-range price.
  • Dhow Palace Hotel - A good mid-range hotel with 28 bright airy rooms, furnished with antiques.
  • Zenji Hotel -- One of the best budget options in Stone Town, rates start at $35 for a single. There are 6 unique rooms.

Getting to Stone Town

There are several daily high-speed ferries from the port of Dar es Salaam to Stone Town. The trip takes about an hour and a half and tickets can be bought on the spot from the ticket office (or touts) for US Dollars. You need your passport as authorities will ask to check it.

Several regional airlines will also get you to Zanzibar (the airport is just 3 miles (5km) from Stone Town):

  • ZanAir offers flights from around Tanzania to Zanzibar.
  • Precision Air offers flights to and from the Serengeti area (northern Tanzania) to Zanzibar.

The highlight of the tour for me was visiting the local markets and trying all of the delicious street food. I highly recommend tours-zanzibar.com for anyone looking for an authentic and unforgettable experience in Stone Town.

MY ULTIMATE GUIDE TO EXPLORING STONE TOWN, ZANZIBAR

by Lee Litumbe in Guides

Spiritedpursuit_leelitumbe_stonetown_zanzibar_tanzania-1-4 copy.jpg

If ever you find yourself in Zanzibar, Stone Town is likely where you'll start. And while some travelers choose to skip spending much time here in favor for Zanzibar's more well known and gorgeous beaches (I made the same mistake the first time I visited a few years ago), I highly recommend you spend at least two days exploring this beautifully enchanting old town.

What I found most intriguing about this UNESCO World Heritage site was how rich the culture and history is. Once a flourishing trade hub (which unfortunately included slave trade), it continues to be a melting pot of traditional African, Arab, Indian and some European cultures. As you walk through the narrow, winding streets, you're bound to experience some sensory overload: children playing football in the narrow alleyways, early morning calls to prayer and Hindu ritual bells, an intoxicating smell of spices lingering in the air, beautifully and colorfully dressed women, and men deeply engaged in mancala.  What's not to love about that?

But don't take my word for it - I encourage you to go experience Stone Town in all it's glory for yourself. I hope this guide will help you fall in love with Stone Town as I did and see why it's one of my favorite African cities.

Spiritedpursuit_leelitumbe_stonetown_zanzibar_tanzania-27.jpg

SOME GENERAL TIPS:

Always haggle and negotiate  when buying anything in the market. Never accept the first price given to you.

Cash is king.  As with most African cities, always carry cash (in local currency), however USD and Euro are also widely accepted.

Languages spoken  are mostly English and Swahili, though most tour guides and operators speak a wider range of other languages.

For women, keep your shoulders and legs covered.  Since this is a predominantly muslim country, cultural norms and practices should be observed so as not to not draw unwanted attention to yourself, so definitely be careful in your outfit choices.

Be careful where you get your henna applied.  In the bustling markets, vendors may try to cut costs by switching up the mixture so always do a small test patch first to check for an allergic reaction. I believe the red henna is of higher quality here, but always assess your surroundings and the actual henna before you get painted.

Where to stay

The best hotels in Stone Town are those that have renovated traditional Swahili style homes into small, intimate hotels. I highly recommend Emerson Spice or Emerson on Hurumzi for this, though Park Hyatt is also a great option for a modern and luxurious experience.

where to eat

Lukmaan Restaurant came highly recommended when I asked the staff at my hotel where they like to go for lunch. It's great for a taste of authentic Zanzibari food for very cheap - you can eat a feast for under $10 - and I love that both locals and travelers eat here casually. You'll have to be a bit assertive when ordering though, because it can get pretty chaotic during the lunch or dinner rush.

The Silk Route was incredible for Indian food. It's just around the corner from Forodhani Gardens and was sensational experience.

Forodhani Gardens in the evenings to try all the local delicacies and dishes on offer from a wide array of market vendors. This is where you can try everything from a sweet or savory Zanzibari pizza to a fresh sugar cane/lime/ginger juice. There are several stalls to choose from, so be sure to walk around the whole market and look around before you commit anywhere. Eat where the locals are or at stalls with a long line to get the freshest food and avoid food poisoning (the meat and seafood are not always fresh). It's also one of the best places in Stone Town to people watch, so definitely dedicate an evening here.

Rooftop Tea House Restaurant at Emerson Spice or Emerson on Hurumzi .  Food is a bit of an event at both properties, and they always incorporats seasonal and local foods. The rooftop Tea House restaurants at both properties are slightly different. The one at Emerson Spice has a table and chair setting, while the restaurant at Emerson on Hurumzi offers seated cushions on Persian rugs, with a "shoes off" policy. Another bonus of the rooftop dinners was the live music from a local band. For both restaurants, I highly recommend you call ahead and make reservations because they are very popular and fill up quickly. Dinner typically is served promptly at 7pm, but make sure you get there at around 6pm to watch the sunset with a cocktail and make the most of the experience.

A Spice Workshop. I had the opportunity to take go on a Spice tour as a guest of Destination Zanzibar and Zanzibar Different where I visited a local spice farm and learn some traditional recipes and culinary practices from a husband and wife duo. After learning about all of the most popular spices Zanzibar produces, it was great to make a delicious meal that I otherwise would never have had.

Spiritedpursuit_leelitumbe_stonetown_zanzibar_tanzania-37.jpg

Get lost in the alleyways , strolling around and taking in the culture, admiring the beautiful (yet crumbling) architecture, and daily life. While I'm all for self discovery and getting intentionally lost, it’s also great to have a guided walking tour of Stone Town see highlights you might otherwise overlook and learn about it's history. Avoid anyone on the street offering to show you around and go with an organized guide from either Destination Zanzibar or your hotel.

Shop. Some of my favorite places were Daranjani market for super cheap produce and woven goods, Moto + Dada Shop which is a run and operated by a women's cooperative, and Abeid Curio Shop for beautiful and ornate wooden chests.

A day trip to Chumbe Island or Prison Island . Prison Island is known for being home to over a hundred gigantic tortoises that you can interact closely with, while Chumbe Island is a small private island known for its ecological innovation and exceptional coral reefs.

Visit the landmarks. You can visit the former slave market and learn about it's very sobering history, or any one of the other historical sites like the Old Fort, Old Dispensary, Palace Museum, or St. Joseph's Cathedral.

Watch the young boys do acrobatics into the water at sunset. It's become somewhat of a tradition, and groups of people (locals and visitors alike) crowd around to watch as they each fling themselves off the clifftrying to outdo the other with flips, dives and twists. The joy and laughter paired with the beautiful African sunset is something I find hard to put into words. It's truly a special scene.

Spiritedpursuit_leelitumbe_stonetown_zanzibar_tanzania-43.jpg

Market GOODS TO BUY

It wouldn't make sense for you to come to Stone Town and not buy a few market goodies. A few items I would highly recommend are:

A Kofia or other traditional garb

Brass, copper, and other beaded jewelry

Traditional towels or hand carved wooden chests

Local Spices and Handmade Soaps

Organic hand-mixed mosquito repellant

Woven baskets, fans, and totes

Self-Guiding Free Walking Tour through Stone Town, Zanzibar

A self-guiding free walking tour through stone town, zanzibar. explore by foot (walking tour)..

I based this walking tour through Stone Town on my last trip which included Zanzibar, Tanzania. Visiting Stone Town, we wanted to experience a little bit more through the eyes of a local. We browsed online for a free walking tour, paid walking tours and Airbnb Experiences, but unfortunately, we weren’t able to find something that sounded appealing to us (and within our price range).

After some online research, we created our walking route. When we were heading to the Forodhani Gardens, a tour guide from a tour company walked up to us and tried to sell us a walking tour. It was his lucky day, and we decided to go with him as we didn’t always feel comfortable when discovering the maze by ourselves. This tour did cost us around $20 a person (private and 1,5 hours). To us, this is worth it, as we received some information about the history and we walked around more comfortably.

However, discovering Stone Town by foot is still the best – and only – option and it is surely doable by yourself. Therefore, I’ll share this “Walking Route through Stone Town, Zanzibar” with you to inspire you when visiting Stone Town.

Broadly, below there is an overview of the different highlights we passed. We did walk more of the maze Stone Town is and didn’t walk the exact path that is stated below. I would advise you to sometimes just wander before you look for the next part of the route. For the route, we started at our hostel (zLife) and walked to the Forodhani Food Stalls nearby. Unfortunately, life is not always available anymore, but Spice Palace Hotel was also on our list of great hotels to stay! Click here to check out all hotels in Stonetown.

Are you further exploring Zanzibar after your stay in Stonetown, don’t forget to check out my article about great places to stay in Zanzibar.

Walking Tour Route, Stonetown

1 || Starting the stone town walking tour at Forodhani Gardens

Start at the square where the food stalls are placed in the evening. This is one of the central points in Stone Town and the point where we had our tour guide walking up to us, in case you decide to continue the tour with some guidance instead of by yourself 😉

tour guide stone town zanzibar

2 || House of wonders

The House of Wonders is one of the most prominent buildings in Stone Town. The house did host the Museum of History, however, the building is closed because of disrepair. This also means you shouldn’t expect too much, as it is severely broken down.

House of Wonders, Stonetown

3 || Emerson spice hotel

Our guide took us past the Emerson Spice Hotel and recommended the dining experience (Emerson Spice Tea House or Emerson Spice on Harumzi ). Online, we already read about this experience that can’t be missed, so we decided to book the dining experience straight away (check out the website for more information) . I can’t recommend it more, so if you are passing during the day, don’t forget to make that reservation!

4 || The Swahili house

The Swahili House is a hotel , but, with a rooftop! This rooftop is also the reason the walking route brings you here,  as it rewards you with nice views over the whole city. You can also spot the Zanzibar Coffee House from the rooftop – a nice place to go for a coffee later.

View from the Swahili House, Zanzibar

5 || Darajani market - A local gem in Stone Town

The most local part of the walk! You’ll exit the maze and walk into a local market where they sell fruit, veggies and of course: spices. They will try to sell you spices for touristy prices, but else, just soak it in and enjoy the experience.

Darajani Market, Stonetown, Zanzibar

6 || Stone Town fish market

Have a quick peek at the fish market. Be warned: it SMELLS.  I don’t know if you will like fish better after your visit, but it is an experience for sure.

Fish Market, Stonetown

7 || slave chambers

Close to the market, you’ll find the slave chambers, that zoom in on the horrible history. Visiting the slave chambers gives you an impression of how the slaves were kept.

8 || hammam baths

Entry fees to the former hammam (hammam) baths are around €5. However, we liked the streets better than actually spending our time inside of these sights, so we decided to just walk on.

Hammam baths in Stonetown

9 || Explore the friendly mix of cultures

Our guide brought us to a small look-through that shows how different cultures and religions live closely together in Stone Town. Aren’t these pictures great?!

How cultures come together in Stonetown

10 || Jaws corner - Where the locals hang in Stone Town

Next on the list is Jaws Corner. A man-only square where locals come together to hang out and play games. Because of this, we just quickly passed together with our guide, because we felt out of place straight away. No girls allowed.

Jaws Corner, Stonetown, Zanzibar

11 || freddie mercury's house

You might know that Freddie Mercury grew up in Zanzibar., which leads to the presence of Freddie Mercury’s house in Stone Town. When you are a massive fan, you’ll probably want to enter or pass this place.

Freddy Murcury's House, Stonetown

12 || The final stop of the stone town walking tour: old fort

Lastly, enter the old fort. The oldest building of Stone Town and seen as a massive tourist attraction. It is now seen as a cultural centre and you’ll find several tourist stalls.
