Tourism Essay – Tourism is a major economic activity that has developed significantly over the years. It’s an activity that can be recognized in both developed and developing nations. In general terms, tourism is the movement of a person from one place to another to visit and mesmerize the beauty of that place or to have fun. Moreover, the concept of traveling is considered a luxury and only people with higher income can afford this luxury.

The Growth of Tourism

Earlier our ancestors used to travel by sea routes as it was a convenient and most affordable medium but it was time taking. Due to, technological advancement we can now easily travel to any place without wasting time we can travel thousands of miles within a few hours. Technological advancement has shrunk the earth into a global village. Besides, the modern modes are much safer than the modes that our predecessors used.

Effect of Tourism on a Country

For any country, tourism generates a lot of money especially a country like India. Due to the Taj Mahal (one of the seven wonders of the world) every year the government raise a huge sum of revenue. Also, because of tourism other industries also bloom. Such industries include transportation, wildlife, arts and entertainment, accommodation, etc.

Moreover, this ultimately leads to the creation of job and other opportunities in the area. But there are some drawbacks too which can affect the lifestyle and cultural value of the country.

Importance of Tourism

Traveling is a tiring and difficult thing and not everyone is able to travel. But at the same time, it’s a fun activity that takes your tiredness away. Travelling adds flavor to life as you travel to different places that have a different culture and lifestyle. Also, it’s an easy way to learn about the culture and tradition of a place. Besides, for many areas, tourism is their main source of income.

India- A Tourist Attraction

The Taj Mahal is not the only destination in India that attract tourist. Likewise, there are hundreds of tourist destination that is spread over the Indian plateau. India has a large variety of Flora and Fauna. Besides, the equator divides the geographical land of India into almost two equal halves that make India a country where six seasons occurs.

Moreover, in almost every city of India, there is a historical monument made by the rulers in their time period.

Benefits of Tourism

Tourism not only benefits the government but also the people that live in the local area. It also creates a business as well as employment opportunities for the local people which ultimately help the government to earn income.

Benefits Due to Tourism

As we know that tourism contributes a lot to the revenue of the country. Also, the government uses this income for the growth and development of the country. Likewise, they construct dams, wildlife sanctuaries, national parks, Dharamshala and many more.

In conclusion, we can say that tourism is a very productive activity both for the tourist and the government. As they support each other simultaneously. Also, the government should consider improving the conditions of the country as more and more number of tourist visit their country.

Above all, tourism is one of the fastest-growing industry in the world that has changed the scenario of the world.

Describing a Tourist Attraction

In the IELTS Speaking Part 2 , you may be asked to describe a place. In fact, this is a very common thing to see on the cue card . One of the common topics is being asked to describe a tourist attraction. It may be someplace you wish to visit, or someplace you have already visited. But how can you describe a tourist attraction?

The Cue Card

For this part of the test, you will be given a cue card. On the cue card there will be things for you to talk about. You must talk about each of these items, with the total speech lasting 1-2 minutes. You have one minute to prepare. Your IELTS Speaking Part 2 cue card may look like this:

Describe a tourist attraction that you have visited. You should say What the attraction was When you visited it Why you went there And say whether you enjoyed the visit or not

It may be different, so pay attention to the exact words used. You need to talk about all parts, so don’t forget anything. It is helpful to make notes about each section if you have time – maybe just a word of vocabulary you want to remember.

Choosing a Subject to Talk About

One of the hardest things for an IELTS student is quickly choosing a subject to talk about in the IELTS Speaking Part 2. Honestly, even a native speaker might find this difficult! If someone asked me a really obscure question, it might take me a long time to plan out a good response! However, the key to success in this part of the exam is making a quick choice and then planning a talk accordingly.

For topics like travel and places, you should have no difficulty choosing. Think of some famous locations around the world :

the Eiffel Tower
London Bridge
the Acropolis
the Pyramids
the Great Wall of China

and so on…

Just pick one that you can think of and then plan your talk. Don’t waste time choosing a place.

Vocabulary for Tourist Attractions

If you have chosen a building to discuss, then you should take a look at my guide to vocabulary for buildings and structures as it should be very helpful. Make sure that you are able to describe the basic features of a building adequately. Think about its physical features as well as its location. What about colours? How about some adjectives to describe the impression it left on you or you think it would leave:

magnificent
overwhelming
fascinating

Of course, don’t just describe what the building was like (or is like). Remember that you need to devote your time to the exact instructions on the cue card. If it is asking you just for your experiences, then perhaps you may not need to do much description of the actual place. Also, remember that a tourist attraction may not be a building! It could describe a waterfall, a beach, or a river.

Examine the Question

In all parts of the IELTS Speaking Exam it is really important that you pay attention to the question and answer appropriately. Don’t think, “It’s about a tourist attraction!” and then freely talk about tourism. You need to answer the question exactly as it was intended.

Let’s look at the question again, and highlight key features:

Ok, so what are we being asked to do? We need to talk about a tourist attraction (ie a famous building, a museum or gallery, or a place of natural beauty). We need to firstly explain it – and this is where you can give some details. Then you should talk about the actual visit – when and why. Finally, explain whether you enjoyed it or not.

Sample Answer

A few years ago I was fortunate enough to visit Victoria Falls. This is a giant natural waterfall in Africa, considered one of the greatest sights in the world. It’s located on the border of Zimbabwe and Zambia, so you can view it from either side. I travelled through Zimbabwe by train in order to reach it. The journey took a long time but it was worthwhile. I had heard about Victoria Falls during my childhood and always wanted to visit because it seemed so magnificent to me. You often see it in books and movies, and it appears like this magical place that couldn’t possibly exist in the real world. When you are about fifty miles away you can already see and hear it because it is so loud and the water vapor goes so high into the atmosphere. Nearby, it is just stunning to be close to this phenomenal spectacle . I really enjoyed my time there, but actually it was very expensive. That didn’t ruin my experience, but it would have been nicer to enjoy it without worry about the cost so much.

Can anyone give feedback on my writing. Today more and more tourists are visiting places where conditions are difficult, such as the Sahara desert or the Antarctic. What are the advantages and disadvantages for tourists who visit such places? It is generally said that humans are always striving to enrich their learnings through exploring new places. It may be the reason that more people tend to visit remote places where living conditions are harsh with difficult accessibility. There are advantages and disadvantages in this approach. Exploration of these places equips humans with realities and true meaning of their lives. One may learn his own capabilities and limitations. They may also satisfy their self-actualization needs and get to know themselves. Siberia is such example, where despite of difficult situations people tends to visit and upon returning, they contribute more positively to their own communities. When large number of people come to these places, it is also good for their local economy. Many businesses grow with influx of tourism industry and it brings positive impact of lives of residence. For example, there are now many tour operator companies are going to launch their business in Sahara Desserts and many new jobs are created in area. Some disadvantages are also associated with this, if more people are visiting these places than it becomes difficult for Government to ensure their safety. As these area lacks basic infrastructure hence more lives are put in danger. Most people are not fully experienced to survive in these brutal conditions and they add more burden on local services. Secondly, most visitors don’t take care of local customs and annoy local communities. To conclude, we may say that when tourists visit to isolated lands, it improvises themselves and brings positive changes of local community. But at the same it brings challenges for local community.

Nowadays, scientists and tourists can travel to remote natural environments such as the South Pole. What are advantages and disadvantages of this development? Over the past few years , there seems to have been a significant increase in tourist trips to the places where conditions are difficult or unbearable such as the Sahara desert or Antarctic, This type of tourism is expected to become more popular in the upcoming coming years. But like any emerging phenomenon, it also has several advantages and disadvantages. I will try my best to elaborate on each of them briefly. Let’s take a look at the advantageous of traveling to Sahara or Antartica: Based on the latest statistics from Columbia University which was done on 300 volunteers, it was concluded that traveling to remote areas can be extremely dangerous due to various reasons. In fact, trip to difficult and remote areas such as Sahara desert or Antarctic can reduce the stress and anxiety of tourists. In addition, tourists can challenge their will and power by going to these areas. Dr. LeoFang ( 2009 ) , who is a psychologist at the Wolford Clinic in Tennessee, conducted several scientific studies which published the results in the American Psychological Association shows that people are frustrated with life after traveling to difficult and remote areas feel more empowered in life an increase life expectancy in them. Traveling to remote areas has some drawbacks: Traveling to remote areas such as Sahara desert or Antarctic can be extremely deadly to the traveler because the harsh nature of these areas contrasts with the urban spirit and comfort that tourists are accustomed to. Besides, any injuries or damage to the body due to the distance from the hospital can be dangerous for the injured person. another problem with such trips is that they are limited to natural attractions. Tourists cannot enjoy other aspects of tourist trips such as shopping malls and historic centers and Etc. In conclusion, traveling to the desert, which is becoming more and more popular among tourists every day, has some advantages and disadvantages that tourists can pay attention to them when deciding to make such trips to have a more comfortable and pleasant trip.

In the starting paragraph with this statement people believe that the importance of the tourism in the developing countries is more instead of poorer countries. Initially, although, tourism is liked just for enjoyment by certain people still some individuals think that they adapt to new knowledge by travelling .for example when individuals go to any cultural place,they can know about culture and moral values along with history.as a result, they can explore their knowledge.what is another factor? apparently,during the travel time individuals meet with new people.various kinds of language are learned by person because when they meet with new people they try to speak language of them.consequently, they enhance their communication skills. On the other hand, if developing countries give more important on tourism, the life experiences would increase because when person go to another country l.they not only learn about new language but also adapt diverse kinds of things such as how to treat with another and learn many kinds of traveling experience. hence, the tourism have positive effect on them. The cynics of the aforementioned notion, on the other hand, oppose the view, they are of the opinion that if the most people travel from one country to another country. the environment pollution would rise with it because they would travel on any vehicle not by walking.therefore, people would reduce the tourism. To epitomise, indeed somehow I strongly believe that tourism is beneficial for exploring knowledge still devastating effects it had on environment are such that neglecting them would be considered folly.

Pros and Cons of International Tourism

International tourism has brought enormous benefit to many places. At the same time, there is concern about its impact on local inhabitants and the environment. Do the disadvantages of international tourism outweigh the advantages? In some countries, tourism plays a big role in keeping their economy stable. Places like Greece, Maldives, and Malta rely heavily on international visits due to the fact that other industries have not been much developed in those areas. Although it dose pose a concerning risk environmentally and locally, I would say that the benefits are far greater than the disadvantages. To begin, international tourism brings a lot of money to the country. Plane tickets, visas, and other accommodations brings income to the country in the form of tax, this supports the economic growth, allowing more money to circulate in the market. Furthermore, as tourist needs a lot of services, it opens a lot of business prospects to the locals. Places like hotels, villas, and restaurants are needed for the guests, these places are also a way to decrease unemployment rate as they need a lot of human resources to run. International tourists are also beneficial as they can promote the various tourism spots to other people. Publication of the areas can lead to more visits allowing popularity to rise. Tourists may also experience the cultural differences, allowing it to be more well-known internationally. Of course not everything in international tourism is beneficial, the minus point is it increases the risk of environment damage and interference in local communities. Pollution, excessive land-use, and waste are some of the threats coming from the guests. This can disturb local residents as they are the ones who will have to bear the consequences of this damaging behavior. In conclusion, international tourism poses great advantages to both the government and local communities. However, to eliminate the downside, strict rules and punishments are needed to ensure the environment and people living in the area are not being disturbed.

The Northern Lights as Tourist Attraction Essay

Natural phenomena have mystified people throughout history, and the northern lights (otherwise called aurora borealis) are one of them. The northern lights have been a source of curiosity for travelers and scientists alike, and they became the foundation for several legends. Today, a tourist can choose between many places to see this phenomenon, including on-foot hikes to the coldest regions of the planet, as well as leisure-based hotels and cruises.

The northern lights occur every day, but they are still difficult to catch due to the unpredictability of the weather. This natural phenomenon occurs when sun particles meet the Earth’s upper atmosphere and magnetic field (Waldek). At the particles are directed toward the planet’s poles, they turn into colorful waves. The name – Aurora Borealis – was given to it by Galileo Galilei, and it describes the nature of this occurrence. “Aurora” was a goddess of dawn, and “Boreas” was a god of the north wind (Waldek). Therefore, it becomes clear that the northern lights can be best seen near the North pole at night.

As stated above, aurora borealis can be seen in the northern hemisphere, closer to the pole. A specific “auroral zone” includes a radius of approximately 1,5 thousand miles around the North Pole (Waldek). Several countries are located in this area, including Canada and the United States, Iceland, Greenland, and Norway (Bloom). Moreover, the closest spot where a person can view the northern lights is the North Pole, which is located on a group of islands that shift and move in the Arctic Ocean (Bloom). However, this location is for the most adventurous travelers as it requires much experience and courage to survive the cold temperatures and the lack of any urban life.

For those who wish to see this phenomenon without losing some level of comfort, the tourist industry has developed a number of opportunities. For example, several northern regions of Canada constitute about 80% of all territories in the “auroral zone” (Waldek). Such locations as Yellowknife in Northwest Territories, Yukon, and Nunavut have spas, chalets, hotels, and hot spring resorts (Bloom; Waldek). Alaska is another spot for viewing the northern lights that offer many travel options, as the state has made the viewing of aurora borealis a part of its tourism economy (“Alaska Wildlife Guide”). The northern coast of Norway and the south of Iceland are other options for traveling in Europe (White et al. 102739.). Overall, several continents offer the ability to see the northern lights, and one’s preferences and budget dictate the best spot.

Apart from picking the right location to see the aurora borealis, one also has to choose the best time. According to experienced guides and scientists, the northern lights are best seen in the night sky when it is dark and clear of clouds (Waldek). Therefore, winter is the preferable season when the chance to see the northern lights is the highest (Waldek). As northern winters are defined by long, extremely cold nights, they create the best environment for observing this natural phenomenon.

Aurora borealis continues to attract tourists from all parts of the world, and the modern tourism industry has adjusted to offer many tours and experiences. This natural phenomenon can be seen near the North Pole, in a special “auroral zone” covering Canada, Norway, Iceland, and more. Alaskan resorts offer one of the most exciting experiences, and visiting these destinations during winter months gives one the best chance to see the northern lights.

Some 50 years ago, the architect and writer Peter Blake put himself on trial in the pages of The Atlantic . In a dramatic monologue equal parts polemic and confession, he pled guilty to having once upheld what he had come to see as the false precepts of architectural modernism: the insistence that a building’s design should express its function; the utopian faith in urban planning, giant public-housing towers, and prefabricated houses; even the presumption that cities—in new costumes of glass, steel, and concrete—would be the sites of an improved future civilization. A modernist by training, Blake believed that the movement had failed to produce either a more beautiful or a more equitable world in the postwar decades—and this failure necessitated a reconsideration of modernism’s basic tenets. Did form really follow function, or was that just a shibboleth? “The premises upon which we have almost literally built our world are crumbling,” he wrote, “and our superstructure is crumbling with them.”

The disillusionment had set in gradually. Blake, originally Blach, was born in 1920 to a Jewish family in Berlin. Following the rise of National Socialism, he, his mother, and his father all separately made their way to the United States; the Nazis eventually murdered many of their family members and neighbors. Before deploying in the war, Blake apprenticed as an architect in Philadelphia and began freelancing for Architectural Forum . In New York, the magazine’s headquarters, he became acquainted with the avant-garde: not just architects but painters, writers, furniture designers, and more.

Already there was grumbling about modernism. In 1948, responding to a takedown of the movement by The New Yorker ’s architecture critic, Lewis Mumford, the young Blake sat on a Museum of Modern Art panel posing the question “What is happening to modern architecture?” A number of luminaries (all men) presented their case, but the report published in the museum’s bulletin concluded that the problem “remained unsolved.”

The issue became even more pressing in the next two decades as cities embraced programs of “urban renewal.” City officials, attracted by a veneer of novelty and efficiency, turned to modernist structures as a way to rehabilitate deteriorating low-income tracts of land—neighborhoods to which Black tenants were steadily relegated as the postwar federal government focused on subsidizing home ownership for white citizens. Public-housing projects, built on slum land that planners cleared using federal money, became avatars of modern design. (See the “tower in a park” units that became one of the prime targets of Blake’s 1974 polemic.)

After the war, criticism of modernism festered. Mumford found the modernists cold and impersonal; their buildings were too much like machines, neglecting “the feelings, the sentiments, and the interests of the person who was to occupy” them, he wrote . In 1961, Jane Jacobs, Blake’s former colleague at Architectural Forum , accused misguided planners of alienating cities from their “everyday diversity of uses and users” in The Death and Life of Great American Cities . Her field-upheaving book became the bible for skeptics of urban uniformity. “Does anyone suppose,” she wrote, “that, in real life, answers to any of the great questions that worry us today are going to come out of homogeneous settlements?”

In his 1974 essay for The Atlantic , Blake echoed Jacobs’s preference for density—and especially her disdain for the wide-open plazas that typically accompanied modern corporate skyscrapers. “The one sure way to kill cities,” he wrote, “is to turn their ground floors into great, spacious expanses of nothing.” But he also went further than Jacobs. In the essay’s final section, he wondered whether cities themselves were necessary to the future of humanity. In wealthy countries, he pointed out, developing technologies were rendering “many face-to-face communications unnecessary.” This wasn’t the world he was sure he desired, but in atoning for his generation’s sins, he pushed himself to the rhetorical limit:

Pretty soon the majority of Americans, and of people in other, industrialized nations, will be living in vast suburban tracts … our old downtown areas will become tourist attractions, probably operated by Walt Disney Enterprises, and kept much cleaner and safer and prettier by the Disney people than our present bureaucracies maintain them now.

His hypothetical became only more feverish:

They will become quaint historic sites, like Siena and Carcassonne and the mad castles of Ludwig of Bavaria, visited by suburbanites on package tours conducted by tape-recorded tourist guides. Rockefeller Center and other beauty spots will be viewed as quaint shrines erected by earlier and more primitive civilizations; and the only housing in these vacation spots will be Hilton Hotels or Howard Johnson’s Motor Inns, plus a few ghettos containing workers needed to clean the sidewalks and change the light bulbs.

Blake’s assault on modernism coincided with New York City’s economy teetering on the edge of collapse. The city had indebted itself precariously for years to balance the budget, but its then-mayor, Abe Beame, was running the city’s credit further into the ground with a spree of short-term borrowing. In November 1974, soon after The Atlantic published Blake’s essay, Beame announced the largest round of city-employee layoffs since the Great Depression .

Remarkably, Beame found time to personally respond to Blake. In a letter published in The Atlantic ’s November 1974 issue , he expressed exasperation with several of Blake’s arguments. But Beame saved his greatest ire for Blake’s broader pessimism about cities. Electronic technology would never fully replace face-to-face communication, Beame knew from the regular walks he took around his neighborhood. “You can’t get that kind of human contact and enrichment out of a tube!”

Blake’s essay reflected the panicked condition of New York; it also marked the frenzied peak of a decades-long critique of modernism. In the years that followed, the movement’s shortcomings were deployed to justify the demolition of welfare programs, city planning, and (in the most literal sense) public housing . In his attempt to resuscitate New York’s economy, Beame’s successor, Ed Koch, poured money into private development, subsidizing the construction of luxury apartment buildings and corporate high-rises, some of which became New York’s classically “postmodern” structures .

More recently, some politicians in New York State have been debating legislation they hope will spark a construction boom akin to that of the modernist postwar decades; one recent bill proposes the creation of a “social housing” authority that would prioritize affordable units. In New York City, the linked crises of housing and homelessness are as pressing as ever, and many of the questions Blake and Jacobs wrestled with remain: Is more housing supply the way out? If so, who will build it? If private developers, can Americans trust them with our tax dollars?

Lingering as well is the question contained in the arc of Blake’s career: What does one find after turning away from the vision of an ideal city? In a memoir near the end of his life, Blake wrote fondly, if apprehensively, of the political idealism of the 1930s and 1940s, reserving his criticism for the excesses of corporate capitalism (to which some modern architects, he believed, had fallen prey) and authoritarianism (which he had come to see, in postwar-liberal fashion, as a symptom of idealism itself). By the end of his career, Blake was more than prepared to forfeit the dream of a perfectly built world in favor of reality’s chaotic and diverse one. He often invoked this paraphrase of Mumford: “Life is really more interesting than utopia.”
