Each piece of luggage is evaluated by experts in the Lab as well as consumer testers on the go. In the Lab, we look at factors like durability, ease of use and more. We also pack each suitcase with a standard load to see how much it can hold and how easy the compartments are to access. Consumer testers come into the Lab to use the luggage in an obstacle course, where they weigh in on handle comfort, wheel performance, maneuverability and more. Finally, we send luggage out with travelers into the real world for firsthand feedback.

You can learn more about how we test luggage and what to consider as you shop — including how to decide between hardside and softside luggage — but first, here's everything you need to know about our top-tested luggage brands.

Samsonite earns our top spot for the best luggage brand because it has a wide assortment for every preference — from business travelers to vacationers — and has continuously proven to be high quality as we've tested it over the years.

In particular, it stands out for its durability and ease-of-use features: There's been no struggling to open and close the cases, and packing them has been a breeze , thanks to the functional compartments that maximize space. It's certainly not inexpensive, but as direct-to-consumer luggage brand prices have skyrocketed, Samsonite's have remained fairly consistent.

Both hardside and softside styles from the brand have excelled in our tests. We've also been impressed by each of the sizes, including carry-ons, checked bags and underseat luggage. Some of our favorite models include the Freeform hardside (pictured here), the Solyte DLX softside and the Stryde Glyder , which is a checked case that's wide instead of tall so it's less likely to tip over.

If you're on a budget or you don’t use luggage regularly — i.e., it doesn’t need to be the most durable and you don’t need all the bells and whistles — American Tourister offers competitive pricing and an excellent variety to choose from . There are a lot of options if you prefer bright colors and fun prints, plus there are cases for the entire family, including a Disney collection . Between the designs and versatile offerings, the models are fun, functional and especially ideal for vacationers.

Just note that while luxury hardside cases are usually made of polycarbonate, American Tourister typically uses ABS plastic, which is more affordable but more prone to scratches. Still, it gets high ratings from online reviewers who note that the bags are surprisingly spacious. Another perk: The brand offers luggage sets for an even better value, especially if you need to purchase multiple pieces. Pictured here is the Pop Max Softside set , which at $150 for a set of three, is less than other single cases.

Away is one of the most popular luggage brands on the market, and our testing shows it actually lives up to its hype. Though the brand has a wide range of offerings, we especially love the hardside carry-on.

It's made of 100% polycarbonate that proved to be durable and lightweight in our evaluations — even lighter than some fabric bags we’ve tested. It was also surprisingly spacious and held a full packing load in our review. The company offers a 100-day return policy on unused items; it also offers a lifetime limited warranty on its suitcases that covers any "functional damage."

Besides the main Carry-On model , it comes in variations like a Bigger Carry-On (which the brand says can hold 20% more) and a Carry-On Flex (which has an expandable zipper). We also love the brand's Everywhere Bag , which is a stylish and surprisingly spacious weekender.

Briggs & Riley

Briggs & Riley bags are pricey — a carry-on can cost over $600 — but they come with a lifetime guarantee that will cover all repairs if the luggage ever gets broken or damaged. They also come with innovative features, such as the brand's signature compression packing system. Bags that have this feature expand to let you pack and then compress down after they're filled. In fact, one of our testers said she packed a week's worth of summer clothes for two people into a compact carry-on, and it easily fit into an airline's overhead bin.

The suitcases also use top-notch construction and timeless designs in a range of styles, including hardside, softside, carry-ons and checked bags. The Baseline Global Carry-On Spinner (pictured here in the 21-inch version) has been a selected as GH Family Travel Award winner for the past two years after travel testers gave it perfect scores across the board. Its nylon fabric also aced our Lab's abrasion tests.

It’s hard to find good luggage for under $100, but Amazon’s luggage does not disappoint. There are softside and hardside styles to choose from, plus garment bags , duffels and more. Amazon also boasts extensive testing to make sure their products will hold up, and though the luggage might not the absolute best quality out there, the price can’t be beat.

We were impressed with its hardside 20-inch spinner carry-on (pictured here) when we tested it on our Lab. Our analysts found it to be exceptionally easy to pack, though the ABS material wasn't as scratch-resistant as other models in our tests. Still, consumer testers liked the maneuverability and wheel performance. This style also comes in two other sizes (24 and 28 inches) and can be purchased as a two- or three-piece set.

This luxury brand is on the pricey side but has timeless designs — from hardside to tweed fabric — that never go out of style. In fact, the brand’s marketing and aesthetics are focused heavily on its heritage. It has been a top performer in our tests, thanks to its spacious interior that's easy to pack and its wheels and handles that make it smooth and comfortable to maneuver.

The hardside cases have earned high scores in our tests — especially standing out for being scratch-resistant, lightweight and spacious — but we also love the softside Legend collection (pictured here), which is made of durable tweed fabric and leather trim.

This fashionable yet functional travel brand was founded by actress Shay Mitchell and incorporates smart features designed to make traveling easier. It also has a stunning aesthetic, including monochromatic color schemes in which the handles and hardware match the case.

Pictured here is the Carry-On Roller, its best-selling case that comes in a range of neutral and fun hues. It was spacious for packing and easy to maneuver in our tests, and though it did scuff during use, it resisted dents well during our Lab's drop tests. Another popular style is its Mini Weekender , which can be used as a personal item that fits underneath the airplane seat in front of you.

READ OUR FULL REVIEW: Experts Weigh In on Buzzy Travel Brand Béis

a photo of the beis carry on luggage and beis weekender bag

The Béis carry-on and compact weekender bag being used as a travel set.

This company was founded by a pilot, and it makes luggage specifically for airline personnel who travel for a living. Still, it's just as functional for business and leisure travelers.

The brand primarily sells softside luggage, though it does have some hardside options available. There’s excellent attention to detail that makes frequent flying easier, like cushioning around the handles for comfort, self-aligning wheels that let you roll the luggage in any direction and abrasion-resistant nylon fabric.

The Platinum Elite softside luggage (pictured here) stood out in our Lab tests. Not only was it durable, but it was also spacious enough to hold our entire load with room to spare. The downside was that it was heavier than others, but it's a fair tradeoff for the top-of-the-line features.

This brand increases the fun factor and makes it easier to spot your luggage in a sea of solid colors. There are adorable animal sets for kids' luggage , animal prints for adults and more. There are also options for licensed teams and art (like Britto, shown here), making your suitcase a playful yet functional accessory.

When it comes to materials, most Heys suitcases are hardside and made of polycarbonate and ABS composite. This means it's mostly ABS plastic but has a polycarbonate coating on the outside for added protection. The brand wasn't the most durable in our tests, it but earned high ease-of-use scores.

Style is certainly important when it comes to luggage — it's an accessory, after all — but you don't want to sacrifice quality and functionality. Calpak's cases are both well-made and have unique designs. Though its assortment is tailored with fewer models than some of the big brands, Calpak still has a wide range of materials to choose from, including sleek hardside polycarbonate, printed ABS/polycarbonate blends and ripstop polyester.

Calpak's Ambeur carry-on (pictured here) was one of our testers' favorites; they especially loved the easy-to-use telescopic handle and metallic color. We also found it to be easy to pack and though it wasn't as scratch-resistant as some others we tested (which is expected for ABS composites), it still withstood dents and damage from our durability drop test.

Tumi

Rolling TUMI luggage through the airport is like a status symbol; the brand is highly recognized for its upscale products for both business and leisure travelers.

In addition to its suitcases , it makes accessories like briefcases and backpacks and has components that make traveling easier, like an anti-slip strap on carrying bags and an extra hook on rolling bags so you can wheel multiple items at once. On top of that, the brand stands out for its unique service offerings, like repairs and luggage registration to help you find lost bags.

We especially love Tumi's Alpha collection (pictured here is the Alpha carry-on ) with its durable materials and removable garment sleeve. One GH analyst who has been using a backpack in this collection appreciates that it fits more than you'd expect and has a versatile design for travel, work and beyond.

L.L.Bean

If you’re going away for weeks or just have lots to pack, L.L.Bean’s duffels are roomy enough to stuff in everything you need. There are options with or without wheels and lots of sizes to choose from (the Adventure Rolling Duffel , shown here, is incredibly durable and one of our go-to picks for vacations with kids).

The flexible shape of the duffel also allows it to store easily under your bed, so it’s perfect for college students or anyone tight on storage space. It’s also made of sturdy, water-resistant nylon fabric that's made to last no matter where your travels take you — in fact, one of our experts says it's lasted for years without signs of wear. She does note that it's a little more cumbersome to pull than four-wheel spinner luggage and it's spaciousness makes it easy to go over the 50-pound weight limit for airlines, but says it's perfect for packing for two kids.

Monos

Monos says its design philosophy is "less is more," — meaning the bags are made to be simple and timeless to avoid passing trends and high quality so they can stand the test of time. Most of its hardside bags are entirely polycarbonate, though some combine polycarbonate and aluminum for increased durability. They also have useful packing features like wide compression straps to help you fit more in the case.

The Check-In Large was a winner of last year's GH Family Travel Awards because of its spacious interior and maneuverability. Testers said it was easy to roll and they loved the sleek appearance. It's also worth noting that the brand has a 100-day return period so you can get a refund if it's not a good fit.

Eagle Creek

Eagle Creek

Whether you’re backpacking internationally or exploring a national park, Eagle Creek gives you both the convenience and durability you need in a bag. Some have various compartments so you can stay organized (or store shoes and dirty laundry separately), and some bags have backpack straps if you need to be hands-free.

We especially love the Cargo Hauler Duffel for shorter trips: It’s affordable, spacious, lightweight and folds up into a small pouch for easy storage. For longer getaways, the Migrate Wheeled Duffel (pictured here) is larger and has two wheels with a telescopic handle. It also opens wide so you can easily access the contents.

No matter where you're going or how often you travel, luggage can make or break your trip. It helps with planning, packing, and staying organized while away — and sometimes determines whether you can bring back souvenirs. There's a wide range of checked suitcases, carry-on bags, duffels, weekenders, underseat bags, and backpacks on the market. Beyond that, you've got hardside and softside options with various organizational features. Amid what you might call the Golden Age of luggage, it can be hard to sift through your offerings.

To figure out what brands stand out from the rest, our Travel + Leisure team has tested more than 450 pieces of luggage ranging from carry-ons and checked suitcases to duffels, weekenders, garment bags, and other types of travel bags — assessing capacity, maneuverability, durability, and design through a series of tests and simulations. We've rolled suitcases through obstacle courses, threw them off tables, and hit them with baseball bats to see how well they'd perform in different travel scenarios like rough baggage handlers. We even recreated an airplane set in our New York City lab to lift bags into real overhead bins and underneath seats. We continue testing each bag in our real-life travels for a minimum of six months to make sure it stands up to planes, trains, automobiles, and anything else life may throw at it.

Our team has tested bags from many different brands, and below you'll find our current favorites. We will continue to update this article as we test even more luggage brands and new bags.

Best Overall

Backed by a 10-year warranty, Samsonite luggage is compact yet spacious, easy to maneuver, and exceptionally durable.

Because Samsonite has such a wide variety of designs and price points, some bags perform better than others.

After our most recent set of luggage tests, Samsonite has risen to the top as our favorite overall luggage brand. Samsonite luggage is generally lightweight and compact on the outside, with spacious interiors to maximize packing and a variety of styles to choose from. We especially love the brand for its versatility, with an impressive variety of bags at different price points so you can find whatever suits you whether you're looking for something affordable or luxurious.

The Samsonite Freeform Hardside Expandable Carry-on holds the spot as the best overall carry-on we've ever tested, while the Samsonite Winfield 2 Hardside takes the cake as our favorite checked suitcase . The Samsonite Bartlett Carry-on Softside Spinner earned perfect scores during our tests, impressing us as a solid softside suitcase for under $100. We also loved the organizational features — including multiple tech sleeves and included packing cubes — of the Samsonite Just Right Carry-on Spinner .

Almost all of the suitcases sustained hardly any damage after we hit them with a baseball bat and shoved them off a table. Samsonite luggage also maneuvers without a fuss, even on carpeted floors and gravel. Prices are more than reasonable, and while you'll have to make any returns within 30 days, the brand backs its products with a 10-year warranty.

Best Overall, Runner-up

The suitcases are durable, smooth-rolling, and spacious, and the brand has a generous 100-day return policy.

Some are harder to pull on two wheels, and the checked models are a bit heavy.

All Travelpro luggage we tested earned high scores for maneuverability, durability, capacity, and overall design. The brand's hardside and softside models were a hit in the T+L lab, and there are both carry-on and checked options with spacious interiors and expandable capacities. We also appreciated the various organizational features, like zipper panels, cross straps, and pockets.

With self-aligning spinner wheels and sturdy telescoping handles, Travelpro luggage is also easy to maneuver on hard floors, carpet, and even gravel (though some suitcases are slightly harder to roll on two wheels than four, especially when packed full). We particularly love the Travelpro Platinum Elite Carry-On Expandable Hardside Spinner with its sleek wheels and a textured handle that helps maintain a comfortable grip, and we think the Travelpro x Travel + Leisure Large Check-In Trunk Spinner makes a stylish investment piece if you're looking for something large, durable, and built to last. Even Travelpro's rolling garment bag impressed with its high capacity for the size. And, while the carry-ons are generally lightweight, one thing to note is that the larger checked models weigh almost twice as much when empty.

After shoving the suitcases off a table and whacking them with a baseball bat, we were pleasantly surprised by their durability. We only noticed a couple superficial marks — no scratches or dents, and nothing that wouldn't wipe clean. Travelpro offers a generous 100-day return policy and backs its luggage with warranties ranging from 10 years to a lifetime, though it can be difficult to connect with their customer service department to initiate returns or repair requests at times.

Best for Staying Organized

Away Travel

Beyond aesthetic appeal, Away flaunts plenty of pockets and compartments that keep all of your items in place.

The hardside suitcases might scratch under heavy use.

Away luggage has a minimalist-modern aesthetic and a sophisticated yet practical appeal. We're huge fans of the brand's suitcases and weekenders and particularly love The Everywhere Bag that's perfect for overnight trips, quick weekend adventures, and use as a personal item on longer trips. The checked baggage and hardside carry-on luggage pieces are light yet durable and easy to wipe clean. They didn't sustain any dents from our baseball bat tests, but there were a few scratches after we shoved them off a table. There are so many sizes to choose from, including one of our favorite trunks we've ever tested. We liked the dual main compartments, compression systems, expanders, and dirty laundry satchels of the roller bags.

The suitcases were a breeze to maneuver on their 360-degree spinner wheels, and carrying The Everywhere and The Garment Bag was comfortable with the padded shoulder straps. The Garment Bag also has interior padding that keeps all of your longer clothing items protected and helps to minimize wrinkles. Away is certainly not the cheapest luggage brand out there, but it's also far from the most expensive. Considering the 100-day return window, lifetime warranty, and stylish designs, we wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to pretty much any traveler.

The Details: 100 day return policy | Lifetime warranty

A perfect choice for organized travelers, Paravel luggage has lots of added features and a sophisticated appeal.

The suitcases don't expand, and the lighter colors are prone to scuffing.

Perfect for organized travelers , Paravel takes the cake for additional features. We loved the dual compartments, many pockets, dividers, and removable laundry bags. While the suitcases don't expand, the compression pads make fitting everything a cinch. The Paravel Aviator Carry-on Plus was one of our top carry-on bags thanks to its sleek design, roomy interior that makes packing a breeze, and slick wheels that were great on every surface. We also love the super cute Paravel Mini Fold-up Backpack that earned perfect scores in every category, as well as our pick as best overall mini backpack . Not only does the bag fold up small so you can pack it in larger bags, but it also has a high capacity that can even fit a tablet, making it the perfect eye-catching style to wear on any vacation.

Most Paravel luggage pieces held up well during our durability tests, though the lighter-colored hardside models are prone to scuffing. The suitcases are also easy to pull, push, and roll over various flooring materials. What's more, Paravel luggage is undeniably stylish with a sophisticated appeal and a cool mid-century flair. Prices are somewhat steep, but in the end, we think it's worth the investment.

Most Spacious

Delsey Paris

The brand's large-capacity suitcases are impressively spacious yet lightweight, with built-in expanders and smooth-rolling wheels.

The hardside models are prone to scuffing.

Delsey is a go-to for large-capacity luggage . This brand carries both hardside and softside suitcases, including surprisingly spacious carry-ons and checked baggage in multiple sizes so you can find the best design for your needs. We were thrilled by how much they fit, noting that they could easily pack all items on our packing list with room to spare, even without expansion functions.

The suitcases maneuver well on their four spinner wheels, even over carpet, cracks, and bumps. Most models are also lightweight, so lifting them into an overhead bin is no problem. We checked the Chatelet Air 2.0 Carry-on and matching Chatelet Air 2.0 Medium Checked bag on four different long-haul international flights and each time they made it to the luggage carousel with only minor scuffs that were easily wiped away. We appreciate Delsey's accessible price points, plus the brand backs its luggage with warranties ranging from five to 10 years.

Best Colors

They come in both neutrals and so many colorful designs, including limited-edition options.

Some of the carry-ons are on the smaller size.

You’ll feel like a kid in a candy store with all of the colorful suitcase options from July — and if you tend to gravitate toward neutrals, July has those, too. After we tested over a dozen bags in our lab on on our airplane set, some of our favorites included the July Carry On (includes a portable charger), the July Checked Plus (the largest suitcase in July’s range), the July Checked Plus Light (a great lightweight option), and the July Trunk Set (a stylish, zipperless two-piece set).

We found the bags to be very durable against our baseball bat tests, although we noticed that the bags with aluminum corner bumpers tended to scuff more easily specifically on the corners. One of our favorite features was that some bags, including the Carry On Pro SnapSleeve , feature a multi-stop telescopic handle that you can adjust to 20 different heights, when many suitcase handles only stop at three heights.

Different bag styles are available in different colorways, and you can choose from delightful shades of blues, greens, pinks, reds, shadow lavender, plum, yellow, sand, and more, most of which will easily stand out on any baggage carousel. We did notice that some of the carry-ons tend to be much more spacious than others, so be sure to check the dimensions to find a size that will fit everything you need.

The Details: 100 day return policy | Limited lifetime warranty on luggage; 5-year warranty on soft bags and accessories; 2-year warranty on small leather goods

Best for Smaller Bags

Calpak luggage is compact yet still spacious enough to hold the essentials, and maneuvering it is a piece of cake.

The two-year warranty is substantially shorter than most other brands.

If you're looking for something you can stash in the overhead bin or under the seat in front of you, Calpak might be your best bet. We loved the duffles, backpacks, and suitcases with a particular appreciation for the Hue Mini Carry-on Luggage , our best overall underseat bag . We love that it glides smoothly, has a sturdy exterior, and can even fit a laptop, making it perfect for weekend getaways or even business trips.

Even when packed full, we found each Calpak suitcase to roll beautifully on both two wheels and four. We also like the Compakt Small Garment Bag , which is perfect to transport of one or two formal pieces inside a carry-on suitcase. The Stevyn Duffel Bag was very comfortable to tote with its shoulder strap and features a separate shoe compartment to keep your items clean if you're in the market for something smaller. Though the two-year warranty is shorter than most other brands, we think Calpak's prices are more than fair.

Best Budget

Amazon basics.

Amazon's luggage is not just budget-friendly but also lightweight and sturdy with unexpectedly large capacities.

Color options are limited, and the suitcases don't have USB ports or other smart features.

We can confidently tell you there's much more to love about Amazon Basics luggage than a budget-friendly price tag. The Amazon Basics Hardside Spinner also landed on our list of the best lightweight luggage after earning a perfect score in all categories. We especially love that even though it is a light suitcase, it's sturdy with wheels that easily maneuver over gravel and carpeting. More pockets would have been appreciated, but both the carry-on and checked models easily fit everything on our packing list without the expanders, which adds another 15 percent to the capacity.

The hardside suitcases have extra-thick thermoplastic shells that passed our durability tests with flying colors — no scratches or dents in sight. They were generally easy to maneuver, too, albeit a little more difficult on gravel. Color options are limited, and while most Amazon Basics carriers don't have TSA locks or smart features, the designs exceeded our expectations.

The Details: 30 day return policy | 3-year warranty

Best Splurge

This splurge-worthy luggage brand boasts expandable main compartments, ample pockets, impact-resistant exteriors, and smooth spinner wheels.

The price might be hard to justify, and the checked bags are somewhat heavy when empty.

If you want the crème de la crème of luggage, Tumi is where it's at . The suitcases and underseat bags fared better than the duffel we tested, but all in all, we were impressed. Our favorite by far is the Alpha International Expandable 4-wheeled Carry-on that looks compact but includes plenty of organizational compartments and even comes with its own removable garment bag. There was plenty of space to pack everything on our list in every Tumi bag, even without the expanders. This brand also stands out for its organizational, smart, and security features. We're talking ample pockets, removable garment bags, laptop sleeves, USB ports, lockable zippers, and TSA-approved locks.

Whether you go softside or hardside, you can count on reliable durability — we even jumped on the bags and rode on top of them and not one feature broke or dented. We observed virtually no scuffs or scratches after whacking the bags with a baseball bat. Tumi luggage is easy to maneuver, thanks to the spinner wheels, but bear in mind the checked sizes are pretty heavy when empty. If you can swing the steep price, we think the brand is an excellent choice for long trips, frequent fliers , and those who like to stay organized.

Most Durable

Briggs & riley.

Briggs & Riley

With ballistic nylon or shock-absorbing polycarbonate exteriors, Briggs & Riley suitcases can really take a beating.

This is one of the more expensive brands, and the checked models are slightly heavy when empty.

The most durable luggage we tested comes from Briggs & Riley . The brand carries softside suitcases with ballistic nylon exteriors that resist premature wear and tear, as well as hardside models like the Sympatico Domestic Carry-on Expandable Spinner with shock-absorbing polycarbonate shells that promise to protect your cargo from getting crushed. We were impressed by how well they stood up to our shoves and bat swings — no dents or scratches to speak of.

Durability aside, Briggs & Riley suitcases roll effortlessly on hard floors and carpet, over bumps, and around tight corners. They also have decent capacities, many with built-in expanders. This is one of the more expensive luggage brands, but it's backed by a lifetime guarantee. We wouldn't be surprised if the suitcases last 10 or more years. Not only that, but there are a few options for remedying potential damage, including self-repair kits, authorized repair centers, or shipping back to Briggs & Riley for a tune-up.

Best Design

Thoughtfully designed, each Béis bag we tried comes with extra, often removable, features so you can customize your packing.

These are large bags and we had a hard time fitting some weekenders under airplane seats.

Shay Mitchell's luggage brand quickly won our hearts with each bag's thoughtful design, customizable inserts, and removable compartments. The bags are certainly large and can fit everything you need for a long vacation or quick weekend getaway — just be mindful that not all of the duffel-style bags will work as personal items. The Weekender is one of our favorites: like Mary Poppins' bag of wonders, this tote seems to expand as you pack it, fitting every item on our list.

When it comes to rolling bags, the 29-inch Large Check-in Roller is our best checked bag for organization . Similar to its weekenders, carry-on bags, and backpacks, Béis' check-in bag is huge and can fit everything you need and more. All of the Béis suitcases we tested also sported durable wheels that smoothly navigated different types of surfaces without gettings tuck, as well as easy-to-use handles that make running through the airport a breeze.

Other Luggage Brands We Liked

Even though these brands did not make our main list, they still have some worthwhile suitcases and bags to consider.

Monos :  Monos items have a nice, sleek look that are generally easy to maneuver. However, when we tested its large check-in suitcase, we found that it carried less items than some of its competitors.

Arlo Skye :  We love this brand's smooth design and stand-out colors, but considering the higher price-point, these bags don't roll quite as smoothly as some other brands.

Roam : We're big fans of Roam's The Check-in hardside suitcase as well as the designs of other Roam bags; however, after one-month of real-world travels, we found these luggage pieces to be more prone to scratching than other brands we tried.

The T+L team has tested more than 450 pieces of luggage, including carry-ons, checked suitcases, duffels, weekenders, garment bags, backpacks, and more in our New York City testing facility. We've tried at least six models from many top-rated brands, performing a range of assessments to evaluate the capacity, maneuverability, durability, design, and overall value. We weighed each bag, then packed it with enough clothes and personal items to get through a four-day trip (more for the larger checked bags).

To see how the luggage would perform in a real-life environment, we rolled them on different flooring materials, across gravel and carpets, over bumps, and around corners. We also threw each piece off a table and whacked it a few times with a metal baseball bat to test for potential wear and tear and how prone it was to scratching or denting. In addition, we recreated an airplane set in our lab, where we hoisted the carry-on suitcases into real overhead bins and stuffed them underneath seats to see how easy they were to lift and how portable they felt.

After lab testing, each suitcase and bag was sent out for real-world testing, and our T+L editors brought the bags on vacations, weekend trips, and overnighters. To test each bag's true durability, convenience, and longevity, we tested each bag on planes, trains, buses, and even cruise ships, checking in after one month, three months, and six months to give our feedback. Considering standout features, size, and price, we created categorized ranked lists of every luggage piece we tested. The luggage brands with the highest average ratings were ultimately chosen for this list of our favorites, which we will continue to update as we test eve more luggage.

How We Chose These Brands

The T+L team tested at least six bags per brand on our winners list to ensure a broad sample size. We tested underseat luggage , checked luggage, and carry-on luggage as well as duffel bags, garment bags, and backpacks, and gave each individual bag a score based on its capacity, design, durability, maneuverability, and overall value.

Next, we created rankings based on the total average scores of all the bags we tested for that brand. We also thoroughly read through all of the tester insights on each luggage item from these three tests to evaluate each bag's details and features. Finally, we determined whether or not we would recommend a bag and its overall brand.

Tips for Buying Luggage

Get to know the brand.

When it comes to researching a new luggage brand, you're already well on your way. For more information on a specific brand, you can check out its website, read customer reviews on products you like, or even take a peek at the items in person. Buying new luggage (whether a singular piece or luggage set ) can be a pricey investment, so be sure you like a brand's style, warranty options, and overall quality before you make that purchase. This is especially important when it comes to splurging on luxury luggage pieces .

Know your organizational preferences

Material and size are important, but some of the best luggage brands stand out for their organizational features. This may include dual main compartments, various pockets, a shoe separator, zippered sections, a toiletry bag , a removable laundry bag, a garment bag, a laptop sleeve, and maybe even a USB port with a power bank pouch — some Arlo Skye luggage includes the power bank itself. While it's not a top priority for all travelers, this can make packing and accessing your belongings much easier.

Look for durability

The best luggage stands up to wear and tear for several years to come. Both softside and hardside luggage options can be very durable. It's really a matter of whether you want to safeguard your packed items from getting crushed or protect the exterior of the suitcase from superficial blemishes (though many softside and hardside models we tested check all the boxes).

Think about mobility

You should also think about maneuverability. When you're running into the airport to check your bags before heading to security, you'll want a suitcase that doesn't hold you back. Four-wheel spinner suitcases tend to be easier to pull and push over different surfaces compared to suitcases with just two wheels, and they're even better if they have a sturdy telescoping handle. Grab handles and padded straps are ideal for other types of luggage, and a lightweight design will make your travel experience much easier.

You'll see a range of hardside and softside models when browsing luggage, and many of the best brands offer both. What you purchase really comes down to personal preference. Some people appreciate how crush-resistant hardside suitcases protect their belongings. They're also easy to wipe clean and have a sleek, modern appearance.

On the other hand, softside suitcases are typically (but not always) lighter in weight and more flexible, so you can often pack more in them. After testing both types, we can tell you they're often just as durable as hardside options, and they won't dent like hardside bags do. Although a textile exterior might be trickier to clean, it can be better at concealing scuffs and dirt. Regardless of the type of luggage, you can find several effective products to clean suitcases available.

Size limits for carry-on luggage vary among airlines . That said, most allow suitcases no larger than 24 inches tall, 16 inches wide, and 10 inches deep. Some are a little more strict, with limits set around 22 x 14 x 9 inches. Keep this in mind if your suitcase has an expander, as the additional inch or two could put it over the allowed size limit. We recommend checking the airline's website if you're not sure whether your luggage will pass as a carry-on.

The Best Travel Jewelry Cases Byrdie Editors Never Pack Without

Take your organization game up a notch.

travel case name

Byrdie / Kristin Kempa

The last thing anyone wants to do while getting ready (especially on vacation) is spending time untangling a necklace . If you don’t have a well-organized travel jewelry case, chances are you find yourself in this situation more often than not. Since jewelry is an important part of a travel capsule wardrobe , it's just as important to invest in a quality jewelry case that'll keep your precious pieces protected and organized.

We put more than two dozen to the test to find the best option for you, evaluating each one based on its design, capacity, ease of use, performance, and value. We filled them up with a variety of jewelry, shook them around to see how the contents held up and tested what’s it like to use them. From affordable and compact options to personalized picks and more, we’re rounding up the travel jewelry cases that impressed us the most, and therefore, we believe are worth your money.

  • What to Look For

Why Trust Byrdie

Best overall, calpak jewelry case.

Material: Faux leather and faux suede | Dimensions: 7" x 5" x 2.5" | Color Options: Black, Caramel + more

If minimalism is not your M.O. when it comes to jewelry, this travel case is for you. It comes with tons of storage options—from necklace hooks and a 28-hole earring card to a ring rod and a large pouch lined with pockets. You can take multiple pieces of each jewelry type with you, and we love that the large drawstring bag attached to the case is lined with pockets for extra storage and organization. We found that it was easy to pack and unpack, and everything remained in place when we shook it around. Though we wish it was a bit slimmer for more compact and lightweight packing, the design is pleasing and functional, and it’s not overly heavy. An added bonus is that it comes in neutral shades and limited-edition pops of color.

Best for Short Trips

Cuyana travel jewelry case.

Material: Italian pebbled leather and suede | Dimensions: H 1.25" x W 5" x D 3.5" | Color Options: Black, Soft Rose + more

When we first got our hands on it, we didn’t imagine that such a small case would be all that useful—but we were wrong. The compact design isn’t just chic and adorable, but it’s also quite functional for storing a few pieces of jewelry for a quick trip. It has detachable ring and earring holders (which makes putting jewels in and taking them out fast and easy), as well as two pockets to hold bracelets or other pieces. The ring rod can also be used to hang necklaces, though we do wish it provided necklace storage that was a bit better at keeping them in place. Overall, it’s compact and well-designed, and the leather and suede materials feel smooth and durable.

Best for Everyday Pieces

Levenger mini jewelry organizer.

Material: Pebbled leather | Dimensions: 4 ¼" W x 1" D x 4 ½" H | Color Options: Grape, Chilli Pepper + more

If you’re someone that doesn’t stray from your go-to jewelry pieces, there’s no need to add bulk to your bag by getting a large jewelry case. This one is perfect for minimalists because it’s ultra-compact. But don’t let the tiny design fool you, it provides excellent organization and protection for your jewelry.

It has removable panels for earrings and rings that feature secure snaps, snap hooks to prevent necklaces from getting tangled, an open pouch for chunkier pieces, and a zipper pouch. It’s very simple to pack and grab your pieces out of it on the go, and we were impressed by how well everything stayed in place. It’s also made with pebbled leather which resists scratches and scuffs, and the mini wallet-like design is easy to pop into your purse or even your makeup bag .

Best Budget

Bagsmart jewelry organizer bag.

Material: Polyester | Dimensions: 9.8'' L x 6.1'' W x 1.9'' H | Color Options: Lake Blue, Black + more

Amazon has tons of travel and storage items, and this travel jewelry case is a great one for anyone on the hunt for an affordable and accessible option. It’s spacious without being too clunky or heavy, and it features different storage options. It has snap hooks to keep necklaces straight, ring rods, an earring card, and plenty of pockets. It kept everything organized and in place during our test, and while it doesn’t feel the most durable or extravagant as others we tested, the functionality and price point make it easy for us to recommend.

Best Personalized

Mark & graham small travel jewelry case foil debossed.

Mark & Graham

Material: Pebbled vegan leather | Dimensions: 4.5" W x 4.5 D" x 2.25" H | Color Options: Black, Orchid + more

This option is best for short trips or minimalists, and we think it’s a fantastic gifting option for birthdays, bridesmaids, or that friend that seems to always be on another trip. It can be customized with a name or monogram in a few different fonts and in gold or silver lettering. The case also comes in tons of colors—everything from black and caramel to vibrant shades of orange and green.

As for the design itself, we like how compact it is while still offering various storage options. It has cushioned rows to store earrings, small sections for rings, and hooks for necklaces. It’s definitely better for storing small pieces like rings and earrings, though you can fit one or two bracelets and necklaces in it. We also appreciate that it has a built-in divider with a mirror and the materials feel durable.

Kendra Scott Medium Travel Jewelry Case

Kendra Scott

Material: Polyurethane, 100% polyester Lining | Dimensions: 8"L x 5.5"D x 2.5"H | Color Options: Lilac, Taupe + more

Another option for those planning on traveling with a lot of jewelry, this one from Kendra Scott is great for storing earrings, rings, bracelets, and chunky necklaces that aren’t prone to tangling. We wish it had better storage to keep necklaces from knotting up, but we do love how much storage there is for everything else. There are tons of rows to place earrings, and the separate compartments at the bottom are nice for keeping medium and large pieces organized. We also appreciate that it comes with a removable pouch and the design is sturdy and easy to pack and unpack. It’s just a bit heavy for traveling with (especially for storing in carry-on luggage), but it’s a nice option if you have a lot of jewelry and accessories to take with you. It’s also fitting if you want a case to organize your jewelry at home—the design is simple and would look nice on your dresser.

  • Byrdie/Leticia Almeida

Vee & Co. Small Travel Jewelry Case

Material: Vegan leather | Dimensions: 3.94" D x 3.94" W x 1.97" H | Color Options: Blue, White + more

If you’re looking for an affordable and compact travel jewelry case that will keep your collection super organized, we highly recommend checking out this one. Though it’s small, it’s well-designed to fit earrings, rings, necklaces, and bracelets—they all have a designated place. We do appreciate that the earring card features a mirror in the center which is convenient to have on hand while traveling. We had no issues with the jewelry moving around during our shake test, and we felt that it was intuitive to pack and easy to get the pieces out when needed.

What to Look for in a Travel Jewelry Case

  • Organizational features: All travel jewelry cases have some storage organizational features, but some are far better than others. The right one for you will largely depend on what type of jewelry you wear and how much you’ll be taking with you, but generally, it’s wise to look for things like ring rods, earring cards, and necklace hooks.
  • Size: Consider the size of a jewelry case wisely—especially when it’s for travel. You’ll want something that can fit everything you want to bring, but you’ll want to avoid options that are unnecessarily bulky or heavy.

This answer depends on what type of jewelry you’re traveling with, but in general, it’s wise to secure each piece in a travel case rather than throwing it all in a loose bag or compartment which will likely lead to damage and tangles. For necklaces specifically which are prone to knotting, look for a travel case that has snap hooks to keep them straight.

It’s always wise to pack your jewelry in your travel tote or carry-on luggage that way you can ensure you know where it is at all times—especially if it’s expensive or sentimental. If you pack it in your checked bag, you take the rise that the airline loses your bag along with the jewelry inside.

The 11 Best Jewelry Travel Cases, Tested and Reviewed

Guaranteed to make it through that airplane turbulence.

We’re going to go on a whim here and say, you didn’t spend a good chunk of your paycheck on your jewelry collection just to have it wrestle and tangle in your suitcase — you want to look glitzed and glammed in Italy, not asymmetrical with mismatched earrings due to one getting squashed under the blow dryer. But these mishappenings can easily be avoided if you properly store your accessories in a jewelry travel case.

Before your thoughts trail into worrying about your luggage space (or lack thereof), let us reassure you that out of the 25 jewelry cases we tested, we found plenty of options that took up minimal space — some were even small enough to fit into our purses and carry-ons. As a matter of fact, we found a diverse assortment of jewelry travel case shapes and sizes — ones that rolled, ones that folded like a book, and ones that looked like boxes. So whatever the occasion (or size of the suitcase), we ensure you that there is a jewelry travel case for you. We found the most practical and durable travel cases that not only protected even the daintiest fine jewelry pieces but fit into our luggage no-problemo.

Best Overall: Cuyana Travel Jewelry Case

Buy at Cuyana.com

What We Love: It’s so small we could fit it into a purse and carry around everywhere.

What We Don’t Love: Necklaces can get tangled inside the provided pouch.

We selected this Cuyana travel jewelry case as our best overall option, not because of any fancy or unique compartments, but because of its versatility. Everyone will find something to like about it, thanks to its compact size (it’s barely bigger than the palm of our hand), minimalist design, and easy storage. At first, we wondered how such a small item could possibly fit all of our jewelry, but upon placing our rings and necklaces inside their designated slots, we were stunned to see it miraculously (and easily) fit — the interior design maximizes every inch, never wasting any space. In total, we were able to transport nine rings, one bracelet, three necklaces, and five earring sets. On both sides of the interior, we found two pouches fit for our necklaces. On one side we looped our rings into the provided row, and on the other, we hooked our earrings in. We did find that while our rings and earrings were perfectly secure, our necklaces got a little tangled inside the pouch. It’s also impossible to fit any chunky jewelry, so this is distinctly for dainty little everyday pieces.

But unless you’re a serious jewelry enthusiast and need to have dozens of pieces to choose from at all times, you won’t need a bigger case than this — trust us, you’ll be able to bring all your favorites on your one-week trip to Paris. Since it’s the size of a wallet, it fit into any normal-sized purse easily, when the suitcase is stuffed to the brim.

What We Love: There’s a compartment for everything, and none of it gets tangled.

What We Don’t Love: The earring card can’t hold any hoops, so those need to be placed in the pouches.

Just because the case was affordable, doesn’t mean your jewelry needs to match that price range — you can easily store expensive pieces here and rest easy that they will feel protected. jewelry it protects needs to be. Color us impressed, this bag fit all of the accessories we owned and still laid completely flat. We loved how the zipper went all the way around, allowing us to open the pouch like a book and get a full view of our prized jewelry. We adored the little purse handle on this bag. It was easy to carry it from room to room on our pinky along with the other million things we transported. As a matter of fact, it carried everything so well and organized that we continued to use it even at home.

There were also compartments for absolutely everything — hooks for necklaces (and an accompanying strap to keep any pendants flat against the bag), bands for rings, a panel to clip in earrings, and two zippered pouches for any other miscellaneous items. Our only complaint was that the earring panel only really worked for studs. Hoops needed to be placed in the pouch, but thanks to their hard nature they didn’t get tangled with each other. During our throw test (yes, we flung this thing around like it was a push-up bra after a long day’s wear), all of our jewelry pieces maintained relatively well put. It did look like it went through some turbulence, which honestly, was to be expected with a $20 bag, but nothing inside tangled.

Best Splurge: Paravel Jewelry Case

Buy at Tourparavel.com

What We Love: You can add a custom engravement.

What We Don’t Love: It’s quite large and chunky, so it takes up a lot of luggage space.

Fine jewelry might require a little more TLC during travel, in which case something with a sturdy hard cover, such as this piece from Paravel, is ideal. No amount of tossing and dumping caused any scratches on the exterior of the case, which is made of ecocraft canvas that’s spill-proof and stain-repellent. Leather details throughout the case also add a touch of elegance and durability. In true Paravel fashion, there’s the option to add a personalized engravement as well.

We were a little surprised to see how large this jewelry case was. The main compartment, made up of a removable pouch, was big enough for us to drop larger items like chunky bracelets and watches — a perk typically missing in jewelry boxes that cater to small dainty pieces. There were also pockets lining the interior of the pouch where we could separate our necklaces and keep them from getting tangled.

The whole case does take up a good amount of space in our luggage, though, so we prefer using it in checked bags rather than carry-ons. At ten ounces, it’s about the weight of two shirts as well. As an alternative, we could remove the main (soft) pouch and simply use it on its own, but we would miss out on the protective hard shell and the ring and earring holders attached to the box, where we carried ten rings and three sets of studs.

Best for Long Trips: Calpak Jewelry Case

What We Love: There are further pockets inside the big drawstring pouch.

What We Don’t Love: It’s very large, so it takes up a lot of luggage space.

This Calpak Jewelry Case is for anyone with a lot of jewelry to carry. From small and dainty to  big and chunky, it carries it all, which is why it is also a favorite of Libby Rasmussen, social media director at luxury hotel Yours Truly DC. “The case has dedicated compartments for rings, bracelets, watches, and earrings, as well as a dust bag for an added extra layer of protection against dust and damage.” The case is fairly large, so you’ll definitely want to reserve it for longer trips and checked luggage, but at least you don’t have to bring all your jewelry in two separate cases. There are four clipped hooks where we looped in our necklaces before letting them dangle into the pouch beneath them. We kept our rings in the clipped bar right next to it. During our toss test, the ring clip did undo itself unfortunately, but nothing broke or tangled.

The main compartment features a large drawstring pouch, with little side pockets inside as well. We kept our dangly bracelets in them and any other larger accessories. Lastly, a 28-hole earring card came with the pouch, which was more than enough to carry all of our favorite earrings. All in all, it’s the jewelry case we’d turn to for big trips and lots of outfits. There’s nothing this jewelry case can’t carry.

Best for Personalization: Mark & Graham Small Travel Jewelry Case Foil Debossed

What We Love: There is a little mirror inside the case.

What We Don’t Love: It’s too small to carry any chunky pieces.

We love any excuse to personalize our belongings. For an additional $13, this jewelry case allows you to add a printed monogram (either written out name or initials), as well as choose from 28 different colors and patterns. The likelihood that someone would have the exact same jewelry case, therefore, is very minimal.

The hard-case box is made of vegan leather, for those of you against using animal products, and it’s small enough to fit in any carry-on luggage. But it’s almost too small to pack any chunky jewelry. (You’ll have to leave  any big watches or costume necklaces at home.) However, if your collection mainly consists of dainty little chains and rings, then you’ll find it has more than enough space. As someone whose main accessory is rings, this box offered more than enough slots for all our pieces. There were also three hooks for necklaces, as well as a little pouch to hold the dangling pendants in place. In the four open compartments, we kept our earrings and hoops. Thanks to the attached mirror, it was easy (and fun) to put all our earrings on.

What We Love: It’s not time consuming to organize our pieces, and the provided pouch allows us to bring our jewelry on shorter trips as well.

What We Don’t Love: There are no hooks for necklaces.

As much as we love having a plethora of compartments, can we all agree it takes ages to organize everything? That’s where this Kendra Scott jewelry case comes in — it’s great for anyone who likes to throw everything together last minute. With nine ring slots, it had just the right amount of space with room to spare for additional hoops. The surrounding four open boxes allowed us to drop in our studs and bracelets, too, while a flat pouch laid on top. Because the eight-inch box is on the larger side, we removed the included pouch and dropped in our earrings for shorter trips with less luggage.

The jewelry case does not have any hooks or sacks for necklaces, so it’s not ideal for separating delicate chains, although we didn’t notice any tangling during use. We were, on the other hand, able to fit all of our earrings — from hoops to studs to chunky statement pieces. When we threw this jewelry case around, we found that the cushioned interior did a fantastic job at protecting all our precious jewelry. The exterior, however, is made of polyurethane designed to look leathery, which did end up picking up some scuff marks during the tumble.

Best for Necklaces: Pottery Barn Mckenna Personalized Jewelry Binder

Buy at Potterybarn.com

What We Love: Despite its slim nature, it’s extremely sturdy and protective.

What We Don’t Love: We wish there were a few more hooks for necklaces.

The hardest jewelry to travel with might just be necklaces. Thanks to this binder’s slim yet long nature that opens up like a booklet, it became ideal for necklaces — they didn’t need to be bunched up in a tiny compartment box or left loose at the bottom of a bag. Instead, we could easily hook them in the four loops, and protect any pendants in the pouch at the bottom of the binder. Would we have liked more hooks? Sure, but any remaining necklaces with less delicate chains were gently placed in the four zipped compartments on the flap in the middle of the case. We also stored some additional bracelets and chunky earrings in them. On the left side of the booklet, there was one long rod fit for hooks and rings, and another long band for studs.

We mostly loved how slim this case was, taking up far less space in our suitcases. Thanks to its sturdy hardcover, everything in the interior was properly protected when we, get this, stepped on and kicked it. We feel confident that nothing could get broken while in the safe protection of this case.

Best Roll: BAGSMART Travel Jewelry Organizer Roll

What We Love: You can fit a ton of pieces without taking up too much luggage space.

What We Don’t Love: There’s no hard cover on the exterior, so perhaps it’s not the option for dainty fine jewelry.

If you plan to take nearly your entire jewelry wardrobe with you yet have limited luggage space, you need an organizer roll. We were impressed with how much this jewelry travel case could hold; There seemed to be a compartment for absolutely everything — a zippered pocket for watches, rods for rings and hoops, a compartment for studs, multiple pouches for bracelets or chunkier accessories, and hooks for necklaces with accompanying sockets for pendants. Nothing — and we do mean nothing — needed to be left behind on our trip. Thanks to its small size and albeit, flimsy exterior, it takes up minimal space in our luggage. The lack of hardcover naturally makes it less protective than other options, but we could rely on cushioning it in between shirts and pants to keep anything from breaking. And because of all the designated slots, nothing ever got tangled, even when we shook the pouch pretty rigorously. For $20, that’s pretty impressive, if you ask us.

Best with Mirror: WOLF Caroline Zip Travel Jewelry Case

Buy at Nordstrom.com

Buy at Bloomingdales.com

What We Love: The mirror in the middle also works as a protective divider.

What We Don’t Love: It’s not big enough for chunky jewelry or a wrist watch.

With multiple piercings, it can be difficult to put your earrings in the exact hole you want without a mirror — we’re definitely guilty of that. In order to streamline your bejewelment session (which by the way, can feel as therapeutic as a skincare routine), we recommend having a little mirror included in your case, because let’s be real, being on the road means not always having easy access to a reflection. The mirror in the middle also worked as a divider to further keep any pieces from tangling. We were able to fit four small earrings, three dainty necklaces, and seven rings in the provided boxes, hooks, and slits. Unfortunately, it’s not big enough to carry any large costume jewelry or wristwatches, but it was perfect for fine jewelry and short trips.

We adored how elegant this stitched leather box felt; the hard case with a leather suede interior amply protected everything inside. Tossing the box around did almost nothing to what was inside — just a little shaken up jewelry that did not cause any chaotic damage.

Best Mini: Vee & Co. Small Travel Jewelry Case

What We Love: Despite the small size, you can pack a lot of jewelry and customize to your needs.

What We Don’t Love: The mirror gets scratched from the jewelry.

Tiny, but mighty, this Vee travel case leaves no space unused. To begin, there’s a mirror on the inside that flaps forward and stands upright for easy access. Around the framing of the mirror were holes for us to store away studs. Then in the main compartment, we found seven slits for rings on the right and an opening with — get this — removable dividers for us to customize how much space and how many compartments we wanted on the left. This made it easy for us to fit even our chunkier pieces. When we wanted to store away our dainty pieces, we placed the suede dividers in again. At the back of the clamshell opening box, three hooks to keep our necklaces separated were found. For something less than four inches wide, it packed a lot of accessories, with options to customize to your needs.

The only con? There’s nothing that separates the mirror from the jewelry when it’s closed. We worry it could get scratched or even broken during the trip.

Best Leather: Levenger Carrie Mini Jewelry Organizer

Buy at Levenger.com

What We Love: It’s small enough to fit in a purse, and quality enough to protect fine jewelry.

What We Don’t Love: You can’t fit a ton in there.

This jewelry organizer is like a wallet for accessories, fit for purses or small weekenders. We appreciate the pebbled leather that was sturdy and tough against any distressors. We loved how compact, portable, and easy it was to carry around our prized possessions – keyword: prized, as it’s too small to fit any clunky costume jewelry. Think of this for your top favorite fine jewelry pieces, the ones you want to keep separate from the more affordable everyday jewelry.

At most, we fit three rings, two pairs of earrings, two dainty necklaces, and a few slinky bracelets and tiny accessories in the middle pouch. The microsuede interior created a safe space for all our luxury pieces from getting scratched. All around, the ergonomics and materials felt superior and exceptional. Buttons were easy to snap and didn’t come undone under any circumstances. This is truly the most ideal jewelry case for fine diamonds or weekend getaways because we felt confident that the tough outer will keep our valuables safe.

Other Options You Might Like

Vlando Viaggio Small Jewelry Case Box : We had to include this option for its extremely unique build. The cylindrical jewelry case opens up in a cool spiral staircase format, with three little bucket compartments for jewelry. Is it very practical in the sense that you can compartmentalize rings from necklaces to earrings? No, you simply have to dump it all together in the three boxes. But, did it make us feel like a Hollywood star with our jewelry on a cool display? Absolutely. When not in use, the case can be rolled up and packed for easy transportation. While we don’t think it’s the best option for fine jewelry, it certainly is great for costume accessories.

Rellery Jet Set Case Rouge Red : The wallet format of this jewelry makes it easy to squeeze into luggage. We found the exterior to be properly thick and sturdy, so we weren’t surprised when the pieces remained protected during our throw test. Considering it's made of vegan leather, it looks very luxurious and well-constructed. However, it only fit a handful of items before it became too bulky. With the rings and necklaces stacked on top of each other while closed, the whole case became rounded out, which we simply didn’t love.

Our Testing Process

In order to find the best jewelry travel cases, we pulled 25 of the most popular and well-rated jewelry cases and brought them into our testing lab. From there, our team of beauty experts were given three necklaces, four sets of earrings, three rings, two bracelets, and a watch to fill the cases. We then observed whether there was any space available for more jewelry, and took note of how easy it was to pack everything. Once the case was closed, we tossed the case in the air and onto the ground, and checked for any exterior damage. Upon opening the case, we checked on the state of our jewelry — whether things were broken, disorganized, or fell out of place. Only those that remained sturdy and effective made it onto this list.

What to Keep in Mind

Material plays an important role in keeping your valuables safe. For the interior, Carolyn Addison, head of product at luxury travel agency Black Tomato, says to pick jewelry cases with “anti-tarnish technology or tarnish-resistant fabric, like velvet or suede, as they help to protect your silver and golds from oxidation and discoloration.” On top of ensuring that your jewelry won’t tarnish, suede and velvet are “also known for their durability, making them withstand frequent opening and closing without losing their softness and causing damage to the jewelry.” Plenty of options here, like the Cuyana Travel Jewelry Case and the Kendra Scott Medium Travel Jewelry Case use suede in the interior.

The exterior material is less vital to the safety of the jewelry and comes down to preference. Addison recommends “materials, like leather, or hard-shell plastic, to withstand the wear and tear of regular travel,” like the WOLF Caroline Travel Jewelry Case . However, it’s not always the most compact option. Those who want something vegan will likely prefer the Mark & Graham Small Travel Jewelry Case .

Size and Shape

Remember that this jewelry case will need to be packed, so consider how much precious space you’re willing to give up for your jewelry. Janie Marshall, head of brand at fine jewelry brand Clean Origin explains that “a good travel case strikes a balance between being compact enough to fit easily into a bag, yet spacious enough to accommodate various pieces.” Typically, the larger the case the more you can fit, but that also means you’ll have to sacrifice more luggage space. If you’re off on a long trip and packing a checked bag, then go ahead and opt for something more robust (you know how those suitcases get handled during transit) — think BAGSMART Jewelry Organizer Bag or Calpak Jewelry Case . If you’re off to a weekend getaway, picking a smaller case will work just fine. The Vee Small Travel Jewelry Case and the WOLF Caroline Travel Jewelry Case will safely carry your favorite dainty pieces while fitting in a purse or a carry-on.

Remember that not all come with a hard shell. While this makes them less protective, they do carry more items at once and take up less luggage space. Anything that doesn’t require special handling will do just fine with such options. Consider the BAGSMART Travel Jewelry Organizer Roll , for example.

Type of Jewelry

Are you more of an earring person or a necklace person? Do you prefer big and bold or delicate and dainty? Would you consider yourself a budget-find person or are your pieces well in their thousands? These are all things you’ll want to consider before committing to a jewelry case. Anyone hoping to transport their long necklaces (the jewelry most likely to tangle) should consider a case that has hooks for their necklaces and pouches for the pendants to rest in. Calpak Jewelry Case , Mark & Graham Small Travel Jewelry Case , and Pottery Barn Mckenna Personalized Jewelry Binder all have such spaces. If you’re sporting fine jewelry well in the thousands, you need extra protection to ensure nothing gets broken or tangled. Marshall stresses “the importance of a case that provides secure closures, like zippers or clasps, to ensure jewelry stays in place during travel.” We found that the Paravel Jewelry Case and Mark & Graham Small Travel Jewelry Case did a fantastic job at protecting everything that’s inside, no matter how roughly we handled it.

Your Questions, Answered

How many compartments should i look for.

The question of how many truly depends on how much jewelry you own or hope to bring on your trip. In general, a travel jewelry case should have a spot for necklaces, rings, studs, hoops, watches, and a section for miscellaneous items. Rasmussen, for example, loves the Calpak Jewelry Case specifically for the large pouch big enough to carry watches and other chunky jewelry. If you have a lot of necklaces, look for hooks that lead into sockets that properly separate dainty chain from dainty chain. (The Pottery Barn Mckenna Personalized Jewelry Binder is a perfect example of this.) Addison wants you to consider “cases that have removable pouches or rolls for added flexibility,” like the Paravel Jewelry Case .

What is the best jewelry case for fine jewelry?

Yes, fine jewelry needs to be treated a little differently than everyday jewelry. The good news is that fine jewelry tends to be smaller in size, so you don’t need a chunky case that takes up far too much luggage space. Addison stresses the importance of proper closures “such as zippers to prevent accidental openings and potential loss or damage.” As for the interior, softness is key, says Marshall. “I suggest a velvety or silk satin lining, which maintains the luster and quality of fine jewelry, ensuring it remains in pristine condition while in transit.” Instead of jewelry cases with large openings or zippered pouches for miscellaneous items, look for a case that has very clear dedicated spaces for every single one of your pieces.

Cameras are still essential travel gear, but unlike flip-flops and toiletries, cameras require special handling and, ideally, a dedicated camera case. If you’re hitting the road (or tarmac) with expensive camera gear, it’s worth investing in a camera-specific travel bag or case that not only protects your investment but has a home for each camera, lens, and accessory you might bring along.

To help you find the perfect travel camera case, we had more than a dozen testers get hands-on with 21 of the most popular camera-specific travel cases and narrowed it down to our nine favorites. We reviewed bags on their design, layout, comfort when carrying, and even tested the waterproofing on bags that advertised it. These nine travel camera cases fit different niches within the category, giving you a wide range of options since not all photographers and videographers travel the same.

Our favorite camera bag overall was the Thule Aspect because of its smart design and layout and its minimalist, streamlined style in a size that should work for most photographers on the go. And because it doesn’t scream “photo case,” it can be used as an everyday pack even when leaving the camera gear at home. Read on for more about the Aspect and the eight other camera cases our testers found were worthy of your consideration.

Why Trust TripSavvy

Best overall, thule camera bag backpack.

Camera accessible while wearing

The understated design doesn't scream "camera bag"

Fits under airline seats

No cover, not fully waterproof

While they’re not an endemic camera brand and are probably best known for their ubiquitous roof racks and bike carriers, Sweden’s Thule makes exceptional camera luggage. Their XX-liter Aspect strikes an outstanding balance of simplicity and functionality and is unassuming enough to work great as an everyday carry pack even if your camera stays at home. The primary camera and lens storage area has a convenient side entry zip and enough space for a DSLR body with a lens attached and two to three additional lenses and accessories. Our testers loved the placement of this side access compartment because it’s accessible without removing the pack to unzip and pull the camera out quickly if needed.

You can easily rearrange the padded internal dividers to fit your specific gear needs, and there’s a mesh zippered pocket on the inside of the opening flap to hold loose items such as extra batteries and cables close at hand. The top-access compartment provides a separate area to carry extra equipment if you’re gear-heavy or miscellaneous non-camera gear, such as layers, snacks, and water. The laptop sleeve holds up to 15-inch laptops or tablets and is roomy enough that you don’t have to fight to get your device in properly, like some similar sleeves. Like most camera bags, your tripod storage is along the side and uses a mesh pocket and strap to secure it.

The Aspect is water-resistant, not waterproof, but stood up to direct water exposure in our testing. It also wears like a standard daypack and has a sternum strap and substantial hip belt if you fully load the pack. The hip belt also has mesh quick-storage built-in, so you don’t have to overload pockets with things like lens caps and batteries when you’re in the thick of shooting. There’s plenty of room for gear for your average photographer, but the size and shape are small enough to fit under most airplane seat storage areas, so you don’t have to worry about contents shifting during flight.

Best Overall, Runner-Up

Peak design everyday backpack 20l.

Peak Design

Innovative design touches

On-body access

Pricier than similarly sized bags

Peak Design started as a Kickstarter launch, and their camera bags and accessories are now some of the most sought-after camera equipment. Their Everyday Backpack (now in its second iteration) isn’t just another camera backpack and has loads of intelligent design features you’d expect from Peak Design. Our tester appreciated the ambidextrous side access that lets you into the main compartment from either side by removing one arm from the shoulder strap and slinging the bag around to your front. Inside, Peak’s innovative, origami-like FlexFold dividers keep your camera items from bumping into each other.

The side-access panels have zippers, but the top flap closes with a dead-quiet MagLatch closure that can clamp down less or more depending on how full that compartment is. The laptop sleeve holds up to a 16-inch size but can be adjusted for smaller computers so they don’t fall down, making them harder to dig for. We tested the 20-liter model, but for a modest additional $20, you can get the same pack in a 30-liter version if you carry more gear than average. If you occasionally need even more capacity, stowaway external carry straps permit multiple configurations for lashing things like jackets, tents, or whatever your adventures call for. There are smart travel features as well. The pack’s back has a sleeve that slides over a roller bag’s handle, and there’s a quick stash top pocket for miscellanies such as phones, chargers, and passports.

Best Budget

Bagsmart photo camera backpack.

Stylish non-techy look

Built-in rain cover

The top compartment lacks padding

Despite being one of the few bags we tested that retails for less than $100, this is a stylish backpack you could use for everyday carry without anyone knowing you're wearing a camera pack. Our tester said, "It looks like a nice, modern backpack that doesn't scream, 'I have expensive equipment in here!'" Inside the water-resistant canvas, however, is a large lower compartment with padded dividers that holds a camera with a lens attached and three to four additional lenses or other gear items. And like more expensive camera bags, there's a side access pocket that lets you quickly grab your camera while keeping the bag slung on one shoulder.

The expandable top compartment captures the rest of your stuff with a water-resistant cinch top beneath the canvas flap that closes securely with belt-like leather straps. Side pouches with elastic hold water bottles or tripods, and the laptop sleeve keeps your computer up to 15 inches secure against your back. The canvas is water-resistant but also has a pull-out cover in case the weather takes a serious turn.

Peak Design Everyday Sling

Easy on-body access

High durable exterior

Collapsible for travel

Not fully waterproof

If you want to travel light with a stripped-down camera gear kit, a bag or pack can be overkill, making it harder to access what you need. For situations like this, I’ve used an earlier version of Peak Design’s 6-liter Everyday Sling for years, and it’s durable enough that it still looks like new. The updated version remains largely unchanged but comes in additional sizes (you can get it in 3-, 6-, or 10-liter versions) and new color options. The latest version also adds more durable zippers and uses recycled materials. The 6-liter is only big enough to hold a tablet, but you can use the external carry straps to bring a tripod when necessary.

The collapsible sling is thick, padded, and fairly stiff and can flatten enough to store inside a larger suitcase. Alternatively, you could pack the smaller sling sizes with your gear and place it inside other luggage to keep your equipment protected in transit and ready to be deployed for lighter trips at your destination. Our tester loved carrying the smaller pack when traveling, taking just enough equipment, and quickly swinging it around to access gear.

Capacity: 3-liter, 6-liter (tested), 10-liter | Weight: 1.72 pounds | Maximum Laptop Carry Capacity: 11-inch tablet | Materials: 400D recycled plastic canvas

Most Durable

Neewer rolling camera backpack.

Three carry options

Large capacity

Attached rain cover

Shoulder straps aren't removable

If you carry a lot of gear, many travel camera packs can make you feel cramped trying to fit Speedlites, large telephotos, and extra camera bodies. Not an issue with Neewer’s luggage-style roller bag that converts to a backpack and also has a regular suitcase carry handle and plenty of interior room and is rated to handle over 120 pounds of gear. The non-removable wheels and telescoping handle give your back a break when navigating airports and city streets, but the backpack straps (including a waist belt) let you go off-road when needed.

Our tester loved the solid structure and substantial padding to protect their gear and felt the bag could withstand drops and other abuse in transit. The exterior is made from waterproof nylon but has an attached rain cover, just in case. This extra-large backpack is just small enough to fit in overhead storage on a plane, but our tester found a few downsides. Because of the size and weight, it’s not the most comfortable for long-term wear as a backpack, and the backpack straps aren’t removable to prevent snagging when used as a roller bag.

Capacity: 60-kilogram weight-rated | Weight: 9.43 pounds | Maximum Laptop Carry Capacity: 15-inch | Materials: Nylon

Best Organization

Think tank photo airport security.

Extra-durable exterior

Lots of interior space

Meets carry-on size requirement

You expect durability with “tank” in the brand name, but this airline-ready roller carry-on bag should withstand nearly anything with ballistic-grade waterproof nylon outside and heavy padding. Think Tank designed this bag to meet US and international carry-on requirements, but there’s still tons of room inside, and our tester loaded it up with two bodies and large lenses and still had about 20 percent of the volume left unused. Think Tank’s highest-capacity roller bag accommodates up to 600 millimeters of telephoto lenses.

There’s a laptop compartment that will hold up to a 17-inch device, but otherwise, the bag is essentially one giant equipment compartment with tons of dividers, giving you maximum flexibility to arrange the bag to hold your specific gear configuration. While you could fit smaller tripods inside, the bag has tripod-specific straps for exterior carry and a TSA-approved padlock and cable lock for theft prevention. Our tester loved the build and durability, but the downside is that the pack is heavy, which gets magnified when fully loaded, so you’ll want to use the rolling wheels whenever possible to avoid carrying the total weight.

Capacity: Not listed | Weight: 12.76 pounds | Maximum Laptop Carry Capacity: 17-inch | Materials: 1680D ballistic nylon

Most Comfortable

Lowepro protactic 450 aw.

Armored build

Lots of available accessories to attach

Ergonomic build for all-day comfort

For long days shooting in the field, you want a comfortable, ergonomic backpack, and it’s no surprise that a brand with backpacking roots makes our Most Comfortable pick. Colorado-born Lowe Alpine made the first internal frame backpacking pack, and they’ve been making camera-specific years for over 50 years. The ProTactic 450 AW is for adventurous photographers who need to keep their pack on over countless miles and long days with ActiveZone support that uses firm but supportive padding that leaves room for airflow against your back. Our tester specifically called out the extra-wide waist strap for putting the weight on their hips where it belongs instead of the shoulders. Beyond simple padding, the ProTactic 450 employs FormShell construction lands it somewhere between a backpack and hard-sided luggage.

Everything about the ProTactic 450 AW says “tactical,” and its webbing-wrapped exterior permits attachment of LowePro’s many sold-separately SlipLock accessories, such as pouches for water bottles, phone, and other accessories. Included straps and a tripod cup securely attach to the outside. Despite being stiff and armored, there are four ways into the main compartment for easy access to your gear, no matter where the pack is.

Best Storage

Nomatic mckinnon camera pack.

High volume

Very expensive

Helpful accessory pouches not included

Salt Lake City-based luggage company Nomatic likely paired with popular YouTube photographer/videographer Peter McKinnon partly because of his massive following, but the 35-liter McKinnon Camera Pack has developed a loyal following of its own. The pack stands out for its ruggedly urban looks and enormous storage capacity, expandable up to 42 liters to accommodate lots of content creation gear but a few days' worth of clothes and basics. The TPU-coated 900D nylon is rugged and waterproof, forming a durable armor that's still flexible enough to feel like a backpack and retain some flexibility despite ample padding everywhere.

We tested the Nomatic pack in the field, and both testers appreciated how the pack forms to your back and the extra padding in the shoulder straps to ease the weight when fully loaded. Like an excellent backpacking pack, the shoulder straps also have load-lifter straps to help position the weight on your shoulders, and sternum and waist straps help distribute the weight more evenly. The pack is heavy compared to backpacking packs, and it needs to be to pad and protect your equipment, but it's light for its capacity compared to other high-volume camera bags we tested. Even for such a nice pack, the price is high, so we wished Nomatic threw in a few helpful accessory pouches and packing cubes that are part of the McKinnon camera gear line.

Capacity: 35 liters (expands to 42L) | Weight: 5.75 pounds | Maximum Laptop Carry Capacity: 16-inch | Materials: EVA back panels, 900D TPU-coated nylon  exterior, Hypalon lashing points

Our testers loved the Thule Aspect and the Peak Design Everyday 20L packs for their streamlined profiles and photography-specific builds packed with many innovative features. While the Peak Design bag has tons of unique features we loved, the Thule Aspect edged it out just barely by having a more accessible price point, making it an excellent option for pros and casual photographers alike. We also got most of the same features out of the surprisingly capable Bagsmart Photo Camera Backpack, which has most of the features we loved in pricier packs but was the only one of our picks that retails for less than $100.

Thule Covert 32L Camera Pack : This well-designed, high-capacity pack is an excellent option for balancing personal and camera gear storage via a removable camera pod that works as a sling. However, we felt Thule Aspect was a better option for most travelers, thanks to a much lower price point. Pros who want more storage and versatility should consider the Covert if they find the Aspect too small or simplistic.

Manfrotto Advanced III Rolling Camera Bag : This basic camera roller bag ticks most of the boxes on paper, but our tester found the padding lacking and expected more storage from a carry-on-sized piece of luggage.

Think Tank Photo Airport Accelerator Backpack : Our tester loved this bag's size and build quality, but other options in this category edged it out by having more carry options to ease the burden of carrying a higher volume of gear.

Boundary Prima System : We loved the design and modularity of this pack and its components but wished there wasn't an extra charge to make it waterproof and that they included more parts of their system.

Manfrotto MB MA2-BP-GM Advanced² Gear M Camera and Laptop Backpack : We appreciated the comfort and design of this pack despite lacking a hip belt, but felt it was a bit small for travel since there isn't much space dedicated to clothes and personal items.

Wandrd PRVKE : We tested the 21-liter size, and our professional photographer tester felt there wasn't enough gear storage for most pros. We also felt the price was high, especially considering the additional cost of including the "essential" photography bundle.

Brevite The Jumper Camera Backpack : This stylish, small backpack scored high marks from our tester for being lightweight and easy to carry. It comes in many bright solid colors and could be an excellent choice for someone with a streamlined kit.

Hex Ranger DSLR Sling V2 : This is a more modestly priced sling than our Best Sling pick from Peak Design that could be an excellent option for photographers that don't want to spend over $100 on a camera sling. Compared to the Peak Design sling, it lacks some structure and durability but is about half the cost.

Bellroy Venture Sling 10L: This oversized sling got high marks from our NY-based tester, who loved the quality, design, and ease of use while walking around for street photography.

Tenba DNA 16 Pro Messenger Ba g: If you prefer the ease of access of a shoulder-slung bag like this, the Tenba may be a great fit as a day trip bag, though our tester wished it was a tad smaller.

Lo & Sons Claremont : While it's not for everyone, this shoulder bag looks like an oversized purse and has some basic camera-specific design touches—an excellent choice for someone who wants a camera bag that's a bit chic.

ONA The Bowery Messenger Bag : Another stylish, purse-like shoulder camera bag. Our tester loved the style and could fit her entire kit inside but felt the price was too high.

Gatta Rae Noir : Another leather purse/shoulder bag option. Stylish and reasonably priced but bulky for travel and better-suited for day shoots closer to home for photographers that want a stylish bag.

Poler Elevated Camera Cooler: A fun, lunch tote-style camera bag that converts to a light-duty lunch cooler after removing the padded dividers. A more unisex option for folks that want a shoulder carry day bag for a small camera kit.

More than a dozen recreational and professional testers took 21 camera bags out around their home bases and on road and air travel trips. Testers spent time customizing the travel bag’s organization and trying different configurations. They then took the bags into the field, testing for ease of use and accessibility of gear while worn and comfort in transit.

We also tested the weatherproofing of the bags when present by taking them out in bad weather when possible and spraying them down at home to gauge how well they keep gear dry. Testers examined zippers, fasteners, pockets, storage compartments, and special features for durability and ease of use.

What to Look for When Buying a Travel Case for Camera

Camera bag makers use various materials to achieve their design goals, and there’s no “best” material to watch when evaluating your camera bag options. Some bags use fabrics such as nylon, and many employ coatings such as DWR or rubbery TPU to give them weather resistance. Many manufacturers will list the Denier rating of fabric, and if durability is important to you, look for exterior materials with higher Denier numbers. However, remember that higher Deniers are usually heavier, bulkier, and less flexible.

Most backpacks and camera bags measure storage volume in liters, which can be a useful way to compare the size of different bags when shopping online. We tested some slings 10 liters or less in volume, and most packs fell between 20 and 40 liters. While you can undoubtedly buy camera bags and cases larger than this, they become too big to carry on and fall more into the luggage category than travel bags. When choosing a bag size for your travels with camera gear, consider not only the amount of camera gear you need to transport but any personal items, such as clothing, computers, hard drives, water, snacks, etcetera, that you’ll want to include to estimate the volume that’s right for you.

Additional Features

With most photographers operating in the digital world, most camera bags have a slot for a laptop, and we’ve included the maximum laptop size for any bags with that feature. If you usually employ a tripod, look for bags with a dedicated tripod storage solution. More advanced bags will often have special, smaller compartments for odds and ends that photographers carry, such as memory cards, hard drives, batters, filters, and more.

All but one of our picks above cost over $100, and camera bags are generally more expensive than comparably sized backpacks and bags because they include extra features and materials used to organize and protect your gear. You can expect to pay $150 up to $400 for a high-quality, higher-volume camera-specific pack though smaller bags and slings will generally cost less.

Cleaning and care for camera bags will vary from model to model and brand to brand, but your best bet is to spot clean whenever possible. Waterproof bags can be easier to clean as they repel water, resist stains more readily, and can also be sprayed down if they get dirty. A few bags are machine-washable, but always consult manufacturer recommendations on how to clean individual bags.

Smaller bags can qualify as personal items, and several of our picks will meet size requirements for carry-ons for domestic flights. Because these requirements can vary depending on your location, destination, and airline carrier, it always makes sense to consult your airline’s specific requirements and fees before you fly.

When traveling with camera gear, bringing any equipment you might need for a particular trip or a photo shoot is a good idea. While no one wants to lug around more gear than they expect to use, it can be expensive, difficult, or even impossible to replace items you didn’t bring when you’re far from home. If you’re like me and prefer to overpack camera gear, get a bigger pack than you think you need.

Also, anticipate your non-camera needs, such as extra clothes, personal electronics, and food/beverage considerations. If you want one pack to hold everything, choose a camera bag that holds more than just camera gear. Especially when dealing with food and liquids, it’s a good idea to have separate compartments for personal and camera items.

Over 15 years as a professional photographer and videographer, Justin Park has tested and owned dozens of camera bags and cases for both work and play. He has employed and destroyed slings, backpacks, and hard cases filming Olympic games and backcountry sporting events such as mountain bike races and ultramarathons, including Colorado’s Leadville 100.

Middle East latest: Israeli president says 'last thing region wants is war' but will 'defend its people' after Iran attacks

Israeli military spokesman Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari said aircraft are still patrolling the skies. Meanwhile, President Joe Biden said the US military helped Israel "take down nearly all of the drones and missiles" fired by Iran.

Saudi Arabia has called for calm over last night's attacks by Iran on Israel.

"The ministry for foreign affairs expresses Saudi Arabia's deep concern over the military escalation in the region and its serious repercussions," a statement read.

"[It] urges all parties to exercise maximum restraint and to protect the region and its people from the dangers of war."

The kingdom restored relations with Iran in March last year - and reports indicate that Riyadh may have asked Tehran not to attack Israel ahead of time.

Israeli President Isaac Herzog spoke to our  Middle East correspondent  Alistair Bunkall   a short time ago (see 3.37pm post).

Speaking in his first interview since last night's attacks by Iran, the president said it felt "like a war" had begun - before insisting that Israel wants peace.

You can watch his full interview here...

Israel now has the chance to form a strategic alliance against Iran, the country's defence minister has said.

"We have an opportunity to establish a strategic alliance against this grave threat by Iran which is threatening to mount nuclear explosives on these missiles, which could be an extremely grave threat," Yoav Gallant said in a statement.

The Israeli war cabinet met a short time ago to discuss next steps, after Iran launched some 300 missiles and drones at targets across Israel.

Iran's attack last night makes Israel feel like it is at war with Tehran, President Isaac Herzog has told Sky News.

"There is an empire of evil in Tehran, which has its proxies, led all over the region and [with] all cells all over the world," he said.

"They're spending billions of dollars just in undermining stability in the region," he added.

He said proportionally, last night's attack would look like 3,500 drones and missiles fired if the attack was aimed at the UK.

"What would [the British government] do [in that scenario]?"

"We were attacked last night from four corners of the Middle East with proxies shooting at us, firing missiles and ballistic missiles, drones and cruise missiles.

"This is like a real war. I mean, this is a declaration of war," he said, before adding that Israel would exercise restraint.

Our Middle East correspondent Alistair Bunkall then asked the Israeli president whether he agreed with the comments of Western allies this morning - which called for calm to prevail.

"The last thing that Israel is seeking in this region since its creation is to go to war, we are seeking peace.

"We are peace-seekers," he answered, before adding that Hamas and Iranian proxies had made it almost impossible.

"Unfortunately, [it] all started on the 7 October when another proxy of Iran, Hamas, led an unbelievably brutal massacre against Israeli citizens and the rest is history," he said, before calling on the world to put Israel's actions within this context.

"Naturally, we always listen to our partners... we are also always reviewing all our options and will take whatever it takes to protect and defend our people," he said.

Israel will think twice before striking Iranian targets after last night's drone and missile attack, an Iranian professor has said.

Professor Seyed Mohammad Marandi of the University of Tehran told Sky News that Iran's attack on Israel was not unprovoked, rather a direct response to Israel's strike on the Iranian embassy in Damascus at the start of this month.

"The Israeli regime bombed an Iranian embassy, murdering people," he said.

Israel has never claimed responsibility for the 1 April airstrike -  which killed Brigadier General Mohammad Reza Zahedi, a senior commander in the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps' overseas Quds Force, and six other officers - as they attended a meeting in the Damascus embassy compound.

"The reason why Iran has such a powerful missile and drone capability... is because Iran has to protect itself [against] these sort of aggressive actions [by Israel]," Professor Marandi said.

He said that the US would surely stop Israel from continuing hostilities with Iran, claiming that the IDF's performance in Gaza shows it is not capable of standing up to Iran.

"If they can't take the small Gaza Strip, that doesn't say much for the [Israeli] regime - Iran is the most important country in Western Asia... [so] if the Israeli regime chooses to continue this conflict, they will pay a heavy price.

"I think there are enough sane people in Washington who recognise that [Israel would lose a confrontation with Iran], so I don't think we'll have war."

Joe Biden has told Benjamin Netanyahu the US would not participate in any Israeli counterattack against Iran,  according to reports.

CNN and the Wall Street Journal cited senior US officials as saying Mr Biden told the Israeli prime minister a response was unnecessary.

The US will continue to help Israel defend itself, but does not want war with Iran, White House national security spokesperson John Kirby told ABC News.

"We don't seek escalated tensions in the region. We don't seek a wider conflict," he said.

The Syrian foreign ministry has called Iran's attack a "legitimate right to self-defence".

Yemen's Houthis movement also said it was a legitimate act in response to a suspected Israeli strike on the Iranian consulate in Damascus on 1 April.

A Houthi spokesman added the group had been in direct confrontation with Israel since 7 October.

The Israeli minister for national security has said Israel must go "berserk" in response to Iran's attack.

Security minister Itamar Ben Gvir said Israel "must not be wimpish".

"The concepts of containment and proportionality, these concepts became obsolete on 7 October.

"In order to establish deterrence in the Middle East, you must show them that you've gone berserk and completely lost it."

The first direct attack on Israel by Iran has shaken Israelis and left them fearful a bigger war is looming.

Iranian weapons and interceptors could be seen flashing over the sky at night.

"I think it was quite scary when in the middle of the night we started hearing booming and we didn't know what it was, I mean we knew what it was, we didn't know to what extent it would be," said Jerusalem resident Cecile Smulowitz.

"But thank God the Israeli army came through, and so far it's quiet and we hope it would continue that way."

Some Israelis said they did not want an escalation but with the stakes so high they were nervous.

"I really hope there won't be a big war, none of us in Israel wants a big war so I hope that's it, and I hope Iran would stop now," said Jeremy Smith, 60, a resident of Tzur Hadassah.

"I imagine Israel will respond because I mean, our whole country was covered in missiles and drones. So what can you do? But we have to stop it somehow."

Jerusalem resident Amy Friedlang Morgans, 71, said: "We don't want a war with Iran, somehow they can't accept Jewish people living here. This is our homeland, it's written in the Bible."

Some further Israeli reaction to last night's attacks by Iran, with war cabinet minister Benny Gantz promising a response.

Mr Gantz, himself a retired army general, said that Israel would exact a price from Iran in a manner and time "that's right for us".

"Yesterday, Iran launched an attack on Israel - and met the strength of the Israeli security system," he said in a statement - just ahead of an expected war cabinet meeting.

He described Iran as a "global problem" as well as a regional challenge.

"This event is not over - the strategic alliance and the regional cooperation system that we built and stood its significant test need to be strengthened precisely now," he added.

He said that Israel had proven itself "an anchor of military and technological power" and of security in the region.

"Faced with the threat of Iran - we will build a regional coalition and collect the price from Iran, in the way and at the time that suits us," he said.
