We looked at quotes from various companies for a 10-day trip to Mexico in September 2024. The traveler was a 55-year-old woman from Florida who spent $3,000 total on the trip, including airfare.

On average, the price of each company’s most basic coverage plan was $126.53. The costs displayed below do not include optional add-ons, such as Cancel For Any Reason coverage or pre-existing medical condition coverage.

But it can be a good choice for travelers who are satisfied with trip cancellation and interruption coverage of $2,500 or less, do not need rental car damage protection, find the limits to be sufficient and do not need coverage for certain more adventurous activities.

Tin Leg’s Basic plan came in at $134 for our sample trip, adding about $8 onto the average basic policy cost. Note that you’ll pay a lot more if you shop for the most comprehensive coverage, and there are eight plans to choose from for trips abroad.

The multitude of plans can help you find coverage that fits your needs, but with so many to choose from, deciding can be daunting.

The only real way to figure out your ideal plan is to compare them all, look at the plan details and decide which features and coverage suit you and your travel style best.

Best for booking travel with points and miles: TravelSafe

Best for group travel insurance: HTH Insurance

As you shop for travel insurance, you’ll find many of the same coverage categories across numerous plans.

Trip cancellation

This covers the prepaid costs you make for your trip in cases when you need to cancel for a covered reason. This coverage helps you recoup upfront costs paid for flights and nonrefundable hotel reservations.

Trip interruption

Trip interruption benefits generally involve disruptions after you depart. It helps reimburse costs incurred for flight delays, cancellations and plenty of other covered disruptions you might encounter during your travels.

This coverage can cover the costs for you to return home or reimburse unexpected expenses like an extra hotel stay, meals and ground transportation.

Trip delay coverage helps cover unexpected costs when your trip is delayed. This is another coverage that helps offset the costs of flight trouble or other travel disruptions.

Note that many policies have a total amount a traveler can claim, with caps on per diem benefits, too.

Cancel For Any Reason

Cancel For Any Reason coverage allows you to recoup some of the upfront costs you paid for a trip even if you’re canceling for a reason not otherwise covered by your standard travel insurance policy.

Typically, adding this protection to your plan costs extra.

Baggage delay

This coverage helps cover the costs of essential items you might need when your luggage is delayed. Think toiletries, clothing and other immediate items you might need if your luggage didn’t make it on your flight.

Many travel insurance plans with baggage delay protection will specify how long (six, 12, 24 hours, etc.) your luggage must be delayed before you can make a claim.

Lost baggage

Used for travelers whose luggage is lost or stolen, this helps recoup the lost value of the items in your bag.

You’ll want to make sure you closely follow the correct procedures for your plan. Many plans include a maximum total amount you can claim under this coverage and a per-item cap.

Travel medical insurance

This covers out-of-pocket medical costs when travelers run into an emergency.

Because many travelers’ health insurance plans don’t cover medical care overseas, travel medical insurance can help offset out-of-pocket health care costs.

In addition to emergency medical coverage, many plans have medical evacuation or repatriation coverage for costs incurred when you must be taken to a hospital or return to your home country because of a medical situation.

Most travel insurance plans cover many trip protections that can help you be prepared for unexpected travel disruptions and expenses.

These coverages are generally aimed at protecting the money you put into your trip, expenses you incur because of travel trouble and costs incurred if you have a medical emergency overseas.

On top of core coverages like trip cancellation and interruption and travel medical coverage, some plans offer add-on options like waivers for pre-existing conditions, rental car collision damage waivers or adventure sports riders. These usually cost extra or must be added within a specified timeframe.

Typical travel insurance policies offer coverage for many unforeseen events, but as you research to select a plan, consider your needs. Though every plan differs, there are some commonly excluded coverages.

For instance, you typically can’t get coverage for a named storm if you bought the coverage after the storm was named. In other words, if you have a trip to the Caribbean booked for Sept. 25 and on Sept. 20 a hurricane develops and is named, you generally won’t be able to buy a travel insurance plan Sept. 21 in hopes of getting your money back.

Many plans also don’t cover activities performed under the influence of drugs or alcohol or any extreme sports. If the latter applies to you, you might want to consider a plan with specific coverages for adventure-seekers.

For numerous plans, a few other situations don’t qualify as an acceptable reason to cancel and make a claim, such as fear of travel, medical tourism or pregnancies (unless you booked a trip and bought insurance before you became pregnant or there are complications with the pregnancy). This is where a Cancel For Any Reason add-on to your coverage can be helpful.

You can also run into trouble if you give up on a trip too soon: a minor (or even multihour) flight delay likely isn’t sufficient to cancel your entire trip and get reimbursed through your plan. Be sure to review what requirements your specific plan has when it comes to canceling a trip, claiming trip interruption, etc.

Travel insurance costs vary widely. The final price of your plan will fluctuate based on your age, length of trip and destination.

It will also depend on how much coverage you need, whether you add on specialized policies (like Cancel For Any Reason or pre-existing conditions coverage), whether you plan to participate in extreme sports and other factors.

In our examples above, for instance, the 35-year-old traveler taking a $2,000 trip to Italy would have spent an average $76 for a basic plan to get coverage for things like trip cancellation and interruption, baggage protection, etc. That’s a little less than 4% of the total trip cost — lower than average.

If there were multiple members in a traveling party or if they were going on, say, a rock-climbing or bungee-jumping excursion, the costs would go up.

On average, travel insurance comes to about 5% to 10% of the trip cost. However, considering many of the plans reimburse up to 100% of the trip cost (or more) for disruptions like trip cancellation or interruption, it can be a worthwhile expense if something goes wrong.

It depends. Consider the following factors that might affect your decision: You’re young and healthy, all your bookings are refundable or cancelable without a penalty, your flights are nonstop, you’re not checking bags and a credit card you carry offers some travel protections . In that case, travel insurance might not be necessary.

On the other hand, if you prepaid a large chunk of money for a nonrefundable African safari, you’re going on a Caribbean cruise in the middle of a hurricane season or you’re going somewhere where the cost of health care is high, it’s not a bad idea to buy a travel insurance plan. Here’s how to find the best travel insurance coverage for you.

If you’re thinking of booking a trip and not planning to buy travel insurance, you may want to consider at least booking refundable airfare and not prepaying for hotel, rental car and activity reservations. That way, if something goes wrong, you can cancel without losing any money.

Selecting the best travel insurance policy comes down to your needs, concerns, preferences and budget.

As you book, take a few minutes to consider what most concerns you. Is it getting stranded because of flight trouble? Having the ability to cancel for any reason you see fit without losing money? Getting sick or injured right before departure and needing to postpone the trip? Injuring yourself or falling ill while overseas?

Ultimately, you want a plan that protects you, your money and the large investment in your trip — but doesn’t cost too much, either.

Medical coverage. If your priority is having adequate medical coverage abroad, you might want to look for plans with high limits for medical emergencies and medical evacuation.

Complex travel itinerary. If your itinerary has lots of flight connections, prepaid hotels and deposits for activities you can’t get back, prioritizing a plan with the best coverage for trip cancellations or interruptions may land at the top of your list.

Travel uncertainty. If you’re on the fence about a trip and have nonrefundable reservations, you may want to select a plan with a Cancel For Any Reason coverage option, which can help you recoup about 50% to 75% of the costs. This helps provide peace of mind, placing the decision on whether to travel entirely in your hands.

Car rentals. If you’re renting a car, a collision damage waiver is often worth looking into.

In general, buying travel insurance within a few days to two weeks of prepaying or making an initial deposit for your trip is your best bet. Assuming you’re not booking last-minute, this will provide you with access to the widest possible range of coverage options. It also helps prevent any medical conditions or storms that pop up between booking and buying a plan from ending up as excluded situations, which won’t be covered by your plan.

But, generally, many plans do allow you to buy coverage quite close to your departure date.

To get the most out of your travel insurance plan, buy it soon after making your initial prepayment or deposit to ensure you have access to the biggest menu of plans possible.

Select a plan that’s comprehensive enough to cover the travel scenarios you’re most concerned about or likely to encounter but not too expensive or laden with protections you’d never likely need.

Whatever your coverage, thoroughly review the plan so you understand what’s covered and what’s not, plus how to adhere to the plan’s rules for making a claim.

Travelers frequently use phrases like “trip insurance” and “travel insurance,” as well as “trip protection,” interchangeably, but they do mean different things, according to Stan Sandberg, founder of insurance comparison site TravelInsurance.com.

Trip insurance, or trip protection, generally refers to predeparture (or preevent) coverage if you need to cancel. You may see these plans sold by airlines, online travel agencies or even ticketed event sellers.

“You could refer to it as the portion that protects the investment in the trip,” Sandberg says.

A travel insurance plan typically includes that — plus more comprehensive benefits to protect you during your trip, from medical coverage to trip delay and lost baggage protections, and many more elements, depending on the plan.

Though travel insurance is typically not required for international trips, your personal circumstances will play a key role in whether it’s a good investment.

For instance, young, healthy travelers with few prepaid trip expenses embarking on a relatively risk-free trip may not see a need to buy a plan.

Older travelers with complicated itineraries who are visiting destinations where they could potentially fall ill or get injured — or who could encounter bad weather or some other disrupting factor along the way — may want to buy coverage.

Consider a few key questions:

How well would your health insurance plan cover you if you needed to visit a hospital overseas?

How much did you prepay for a hotel or rental car?

How much money would you be out if weather or some other flight issue derailed your itinerary?

The average household spent more than $2,000 a year on travel before the pandemic. As traveling rebounds and you’re ready to plan your next trip, a trip cancellation policy can give you peace of mind. But it’s important to understand what trip cancellation insurance does and does not cover.  

What is trip cancellation insurance?

Trip cancellation insurance is a type of travel insurance designed to reimburse you for prepaid, nonrefundable travel expenses when you cancel your trip because of a reason listed in your policy. 

Trip cancellation insurance is often part of a comprehensive travel insurance plan, but it can also be purchased separately. 

You can typically purchase trip cancellation insurance up to the day before your scheduled departure. It’s best, however, to buy a travel insurance plan as soon as you make your first trip deposit. You won’t be charged extra for buying a plan earlier, and you will be covered for a longer period of time.

What trip cancellation insurance covers

Trip cancellation insurance can reimburse you for 100% of your nonrefundable and prepaid trip costs if you cancel for a covered reason, which may include: 

  • Death of your travel companion, business partner or family member (policies differ on who is considered a family member).
  • Injury or illness of you or a travel companion (documented by a doctor).
  • Complications from pregnancy for you or your travel companion.
  • Traffic accident en route to departure.
  • Mechanical breakdown or other failure of your transportation.
  • Mandated shutdown of an airport or air traffic control system.
  • Air traffic control or airport shutdown due to fire or power outage.
  • Mandatory evacuation due to an unforeseen natural disaster.
  • Severe, sudden weather.
  • Your home or your trip lodging is uninhabitable due to a natural disaster, vandalism or burglary.
  • Hurricane warning or hurricane watch (you must have purchased the policy before the storm was named).
  • Terrorist attack.

What trip cancellation insurance does not cover

While trip cancellation policies differ, most plans will not cover incidents that could be foreseen or planned around. For instance, most trip cancellation policies will not cover cancellations resulting from:

  • Alcohol or substance use.
  • Committing a felony.
  • Dental treatment or elective procedures.
  • Harm resulting from dangerous activities such as skydiving or bungee jumping.
  • Mental or nervous health disorders.
  • Normal pregnancy and childbirth.
  • Participation in amateur or professional sporting events.
  • Self-harm. 

What is “cancel for any reason” coverage?  

If you want to be able to cancel your trip for any reason, not only those specified in your policy, consider buying “cancel for any reason” (CFAR) coverage. This premium upgrade will add about 50% to the cost of your trip cancellation insurance but will give you greater flexibility with your plans.  

CFAR coverage typically reimburses up to 75% of your nonrefundable trip costs when you cancel a trip. But you have to cancel at least 48 hours before your scheduled departure if you hope to file a successful CFAR claim. 

How much does trip cancellation insurance cost?

A basic travel insurance policy with trip cancellation coverage typically costs between 5% and 10% of the total cost of your trip. That means if you take a $5,000 safari trip to Tanzania, your travel insurance might cost between $250 and $500. 

How much you pay for trip cancellation insurance will depend on the travel insurance company, the plan and level of coverage you choose, the number of travelers in your party and their ages, your trip length and trip expenses. 

How to get trip cancellation insurance

Comprehensive travel insurance policies usually include trip cancellation benefits, but you can also buy a standalone trip cancellation policy. 

To shop for trip cancellation insurance, follow these steps. 

  • Check if your credit card has travel insurance. If your credit card provides trip cancellation benefits when you pay for trip expenses with that card, you may opt to skip buying a separate trip insurance policy.
  • Compare quotes. Choose a travel insurance company by comparing travel insurance plans and quotes online . 
  • Buy the plan you want. You can buy travel insurance online. Be prepared to enter your travel dates and destination, the total value of your trip and information about your travel companions.
  • Review your plan . After buying travel insurance, you typically have a free look period of 14 or 15 days. If you read the details of your plan and decide it’s not a good fit, you can cancel and request a refund during that period.

  • Coverage: CFAR insurance enhances the trip cancellation reasons not covered by standard travel insurance policies. This includes things such as personal reasons, work-related issues, or just changing your mind.
  • Flexibility: Using CFAR insurance can give you exceptional flexibility if you’re concerned about plan changes or unforeseen events. You can cancel your trip and be eligible for reimbursement even if the reason doesn’t meet the criteria specified by regular travel insurance.
  • Timeframe: You typically need to purchase CFAR insurance within a specified period of making the initial trip deposit, usually within 10 to 21 days, depending on the insurance provider. It’s typically available as an optional comprehensive travel insurance policy add-on.
  • Reimbursement: While you’ll get reimbursed for prepaid nonrefundable trip expenses if you cancel, you shouldn’t expect full reimbursement. Depending on the policy, CFAR travel insurance reimbursement typically offers 50% to 75%.
  • Policy Conditions: Cancellation reasons are extremely flexible, but you’ll still need to meet policy requirements to avoid denying your claim. For example, you usually need to cancel within an allowable time frame, such as at least 2 days before your trip. You’ll need to read your policy carefully to understand limitations and exclusions.

Cancel for Any Reason travel insurance typically doesn’t cover points and miles reimbursement. However, the nonrefundable fees and taxes you must pay can be covered. You can also be reimbursed for fees associated with redepositing the miles or rebooking fees. But travel insurance, even Cancel for Any Reason travel insurance, generally does not insure the retail value of the ticket or your rewards — only your nonrefundable cash outlay.

Eligibility for CFAR coverage varies depending on the insurance provider and policy terms. But generally, you’ll need to purchase coverage within a certain timeframe, your trip must meet the criteria, and you must cancel within the allowed period, usually providing documentation to support the cancellation.

In addition to the cancellation timeframe, insurance providers may have other requirements that need to be met for CFAR coverage. These requirements can vary, so it’s essential to review the terms and conditions of the policy carefully. Some examples of additional requirements specified by insurers may include:

  • CFAR Purchase Timeframe: Depending on the insurer, you can typically only purchase CFAR coverage within a specific period of your initial trip deposit, usually between 10 to 21 days. It’s essential to check the policy details and ensure you meet the deadline for purchasing CFAR coverage.
  • Coverage Criteria: Your trip must meet eligibility for CFAR coverage with eligibility factors such as your residency, age, trip duration, and the total trip cost. 
  • Cancellation Timeframe: There’s usually a deadline you must cancel your trip by to be eligible for CFAR reimbursement, typically at least 48 hours from your scheduled departure. 
  • Documentation: An insurer may require you to provide documentation supporting your trip cancellation, such as medical certificates, official letters, or other evidence related to the reason for cancellation. 

State regulations restrict CFAR travel insurance in New York, requiring that travel insurance policies provide coverage for specific enumerated risks — which usually excludes CFAR coverage. If you live in New York and want CFAR coverage, you may need to work with an out-of-state insurance provider.

Cancel for Any Reason Travel Insurance Costs

Policy costs for CFAR vary depending on the insurance provider, specific policy, trip cost, and age of those being insured. You should expect CFAR coverage to cost about 10% to 50% more than the base travel insurance policy. For example, on a standard travel insurance policy that costs $200, you should expect to pay $20 to $100 more to add CFAR coverage.

Getting quotes for CFAR insurance from multiple insurance providers is a good idea to compare the costs and coverage based on your specific travel details and requirements.

Is Cancel for Any Reason Coverage Standard?

CFAR travel coverage isn’t standard on most travel insurance policies and is usually offered as an add-on to a standard travel insurance policy.

With a standard travel insurance policy, you generally have specific allowed reasons for trip cancellation, such as illness, injury, or the death of a family member. There are typically predefined criteria and limitations for reimbursement. 

CFAR coverage enhances the reasons for cancellation, allowing you to cancel your trip for any reason and still receive partial reimbursement. However, you should expect to pay more for this coverage than standard travel insurance. 

Some credit cards offer travel insurance as a cardholder benefit, especially travel credit cards. But don’t expect CFAR coverage with credit card travel insurance, as it doesn’t come standard, and you usually can’t customize credit card travel insurance coverage.

Consider these factors as you compare the best CFAR policy:

  • Availability: CFAR travel insurance isn’t available with all providers. Ensure the policy you’re considering includes a CFAR option, either as a standalone policy or as an add-on to standard travel insurance plans.
  • Eligibility Requirements: Some CFAR policies restrict age, trip duration, and preexisting conditions, so be sure you and your trip meet the requirements.
  • Percentage of Reimbursement: Review the CFAR policy before you book to confirm how much you’ll be reimbursed if you need to cancel. CFAR policies usually reimburse 50% to 75% of the trip cost.
  • Purchase Deadline: You’ll usually need to purchase your CFAR coverage within a certain period of booking your trip, so be sure you’re buying your policy within that timeframe.
  • Cancellation Window: Confirm how many days before your trip you need to cancel to be eligible for reimbursement, and be sure you understand the cancellation window the policy specifies. 
  • Refund Method: Find out how the insurance company will refund you if you need to cancel your trip. You might get cash or travel credits.
  • Exclusions: Read the policy to understand what’s excluded under CFAR coverage, such as reimbursement limitations related to terrorism, natural disasters, or preexisting conditions.
  • Policy Cost: You should expect to pay more for CFAR than standard trip cancellation coverage. Always compare policy costs across at least a few providers.

  • Allianz Global Assistance : If you’ve purchased a OneTrip Prime or OneTrip Premier travel insurance policy, you can add Cancel Anytime to your policy as an upgrade. It reimburses up to 80% of your lost nonrefundable trip costs if you cancel your trip for a reason your plan doesn’t already cover. Allianz CFAR is unique as it allows you to cancel as late as your day of departure — as long as you haven’t left yet.
  • AXA Assistance USA : When you buy a Platinum Plan travel insurance policy from AXA Assistance USA, you can get an optional benefit of Cancel for Any Reason with up to 75% of your trip cost reimbursed if you need to cancel. You must purchase coverage within 14 days of your initial trip deposit.
  • Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection : You can upgrade a Berkshire Hathaway ExactCare or LuxuryCare plan with a Cancel for Any Reason upgrade. It provides reimbursement for up to 50% of your nonrefundable trip payments if you have to cancel your trip for a reason not listed in the ExactCare description of coverages.
  • IMG Global : Cancel for Any Reason coverage is available to IMG Global travel insurance policyholders. On the iTravelInsured Travel LX plan, you can purchase Cancel and Interruption for Any Reason coverage as an optional upgrade, which covers 75% of your nonrefundable insured trip cost.
  • Seven Corners : You can add Cancel for Any Reason coverage to most Seven Corners Trip Protection plans. Seven Corners also offers Interruption for Any Reason coverage as an add-on. Both offer up to 75% reimbursement for your nonrefundable trip expenses.
  • Tin Leg : Using Tin Leg Gold coverage, you can add Cancel for Any Reason as an upgrade to get partial — 75% — reimbursement for prepaid and nonrefundable trip payments if your trip is canceled for a reason not already covered by your main policy.
  • Travelex Insurance Service : As long as you cancel up to 48 hours before your scheduled departure date, you can get up to 75% of your insured trip costs — up to $7,500 — reimbursed with a Travelex Insurance Service Cancel for Any Reason upgrade.
  • Travel Insured International : On Travel Insured International Worldwide Trip Protection policies, you can add Cancel for Any Reason coverage for up to 75% reimbursement on qualifying travel expenses. Travel Insured International also offers Interrupt for Any Reason coverage.
  • USI Affinity Travel Insurance Services : With Travel Insurance Select plans from USI Affinity Travel Insurance Services, you can add Cancel for Any Reason or interruption for any reason coverage — with up to 75% reimbursement for qualifying expenses.

With CFAR travel insurance, you can cancel your trip and receive reimbursement for nearly any reason, even if standard travel insurance policies do not usually cover it. Your cancellation should be covered no matter your reason for cancellation as long as you meet policy requirements, such as canceling at least 48 hours before your scheduled departure. 

These are some common examples of covered reasons for trip cancellation under CFAR insurance:

  • Change of Heart: You can cancel your trip for personal reasons, such as no longer wanting to travel, fear, or choosing a different destination. 
  • Work-related Issues: Whether you’ve lost your job, can’t take time off as scheduled, or have another work conflict, you can get reimbursed for trip cancellation using CFAR insurance.
  • Family Events: Family obligations such as a wedding, the birth of a child, or a family member’s illness can be covered with CFAR insurance.
  • Personal Health Issues: CFAR insurance can cover trip cancellation if you have an unexpected illness or injury that prevents you from traveling — though you’ll need to cancel your trip within the timeframe required by the policy.
  • Natural Disasters: Hurricanes, earthquakes, or severe weather conditions that may make your destination unsafe or inaccessible are covered by CFAR insurance.
  • Political Unrest: CFAR insurance may cover trip cancellation due to political instability or civil unrest at your destination.

While CFAR travel insurance covers almost any reason you might have to cancel your trip, you should review your policy details carefully to ensure you’re covered. Understand the conditions and limitations, such as cancellation deadlines and reimbursement packages.

Denial of CFAR Coverage

While specific reasons for denial of Cancel for Any Reason coverage may vary depending on the insurance provider and policy terms, here are a few examples of potential reasons for denial:

  • Failure To Meet the Purchase Timeframe: If you fail to purchase CFAR coverage within the specified timeframe after making your initial trip deposit, the insurance provider may deny your claim. Make sure to review the policy details and adhere to the deadline for purchasing CFAR coverage.
  • Preexisting Medical Conditions: Some insurance policies may exclude coverage for preexisting medical conditions. If you or a covered individual has a preexisting medical condition that leads to trip cancellation, the CFAR coverage may be denied. It’s essential to carefully review the policy terms to understand any exclusions related to preexisting conditions.
  • Known Events: You’re typically not covered by CFAR if the reason for the cancellation was a “known event” when you purchased the policy. Known events are ones that are widely publicized and occurred before you bought the CFAR policy. For example, purchasing a policy after a hurricane was predicted to make landfall and then canceling for the storm may not be covered.
  • Canceling Too Late: You must cancel your trip within a specific timeframe before your scheduled departure date and will be denied if you cancel after this date.
  • Insufficient Documentation: You must provide the specific documentation required to support your claim, such as medical certificates or official letters. Your coverage may be denied without the necessary documentation. 
  • Failure To Meet Policy Criteria: Some policies have specific criteria for CFAR coverage, such as residency, age, trip duration, and total trip cost. You may not qualify for a CFAR policy if your trip doesn’t meet the criteria, or your claim may be denied if you get a policy but don’t meet the criteria.

You can often add CFAR travel insurance as an optional add-on to a comprehensive travel insurance policy — if your insurance carrier offers it. If you already have travel insurance for your trip, check with your insurance provider about the availability and cost of CFAR travel insurance. 

If your current travel insurance provider doesn’t offer CFAR coverage or you haven’t purchased travel insurance for your trip yet, you can look for a CFAR policy as standalone coverage. Research CFAR travel insurance providers and compare policies to find a policy that works for you. 

Let’s walk through adding CFAR coverage to a standard Seven Corners travel insurance policy.

First, I entered travel information to get travel insurance options. I was offered Trip Protection Basic or Trip Protection Choice. At the bottom, notice both have the option to add CFAR coverage.

I selected Trip Protection Basic and then went forward to the optional coverage option. I was offered both Cancel for Any Reason and Interruption for Any Reason (IFAR) coverage. IFAR is far lower than CFAR , so it’s not a bad idea to add if you’re worried you might run into issues after your trip starts and can no longer use your CFAR coverage.

As demand for travel soars and everything from weather to staffing issues leads to higher prices and cancellations, it's more important than ever to protect your trip arrangements with travel insurance .

However, it's not always easy figuring out which type of plan to pick. There are standard policies that cover general delays, interruptions and cancellations; "cancel for any reason" plans that account for personal whims in addition to unforeseen circumstances; and lesser-known annual options.

In this article, I'll go over what you need to know about the third type: annual travel insurance coverage.

What is annual travel insurance?

Annual travel insurance plans (also known as multi-trip plans) last for one year and generally cover all trips taken within that period until either the policy expires or the maximum payout amounts are reached. The policy usually kicks in for trips that take you more than a certain distance from home.

For example, my Allianz AllTrips Prime annual plan remains in effect for one year following the purchase date of my policy. I'm covered on all trips during which I'm at least 100 miles from my residence.

This differs from standard travel insurance, which is purchased on a per-trip basis and covers only one specifically insured journey per policy. Standard policies begin when travel for the insured trip begins and end when the insured trip ends, rather than covering multiple travel experiences within a specific period of time.

What does annual travel insurance cover?

Coverage depends on the plan you purchase. There are usually several tiers from which to choose, with the lowest offering the least coverage and the highest offering the most.

Using my policy as an example, I'm covered for up to $3,000 per year in trip interruption expenses, including hotel room coverage at $250 per night, which I used when I was recently isolated for 10 days after testing positive for COVID-19.

My policy also offers a $3,000 annual trip cancellation benefit, $20,000 in emergency medical coverage, $100,000 in emergency transportation (including medevac services), $45,000 in rental car theft and damage protection, $25,000 in travel accident coverage and $1,000 for essentials in the event of baggage loss or damage, along with a handful of other small benefits.

Note that many annual policies do not include things like "cancel for any reason" coverage or trip interruption benefits. If those items are important to you, check with your provider before making a purchase.

How much is an annual travel insurance policy?

Sure, an annual travel insurance policy may sound great, but how much does one cost? I was surprised to find that insuring your trips for a whole year with an annual policy is often not much more expensive than insuring one or two trips individually, depending on the options you select.

A decent annual travel insurance plan will likely set you back a couple hundred dollars. The more coverage you add, the more expensive the plan will become. The cost also changes depending on variables like your age and where you live.

The best thing to do is contact your preferred provider for a quote or check out an aggregator like InsureMyTrip to compare premiums.

Which companies offer annual travel insurance plans?

The Points Guy recommends the following travel insurance providers , all of which sell annual or semi-annual policies:

  • Allianz Travel Insurance .
  • Seven Corners .
  • Travel Guard .
  • World Nomads .

When should I purchase annual travel insurance?

There are several reasons why annual travel insurance might be better for you than separate policies for individual trips. If you travel a lot — more than two or three times annually — it could be more cost-effective than purchasing separate policies for each journey.

For me, it makes sense because I travel for a living, often taking a dozen or more trips each year. Also, much of my travel is comped, which makes insurance more difficult to acquire. (If I haven't paid for a cruise, flight or hotel, I can't attach a dollar amount to it and, therefore, often can't insure it. I also wouldn't be able to provide purchase receipts in the event something went wrong and had to file a claim.)

Other factors to consider include your health, how adventurous your travels might be, whether you have coverage as a credit card perk and how much your travel arrangements cost versus how much coverage you can get with an annual plan versus individual policies.

Another consideration right now is COVID-19. For me, the annual plan made sense because most of Allianz's individual plans don't cover issues linked to COVID-19. However, the annual coverage I purchased does.

Other things to know about annual travel insurance policies

Here are a few additional tidbits I learned after filing a trip interruption claim under my annual travel insurance policy. Keep them in mind when deciding if an annual policy is right for you.

  • Before committing to the purchase of any travel insurance plan, make sure to inquire about specific components that are important to you. For me, those were COVID-19 coverage, trip interruption benefits and medevac coverage.
  • Know that your coverage does not reset each time you travel when you opt for an annual policy. So, if you have a trip that goes awry, you file a claim and you max out the benefit allowed by your plan, you won't have that benefit available to you for the remainder of your policy year.
  • Depending on your policy, you might have to return home between travel sessions in order for each trip to be covered. Taking several back-to-back trips could prevent them from qualifying for coverage under your annual insurance plan, so be sure to read the fine print, and plan accordingly.
  • If you purchase annual or multi-trip travel insurance, keep your policy card and provider phone number with the other important documents you bring when you travel so they're easily accessible in a pinch.
  • If you find yourself in a covered situation for which you'd like to seek reimbursement, keep all receipts and take photos that will help to support your claims when they're submitted.
  • Don't assume all your expenses will be reimbursed, even if you think they'll be covered. It doesn't hurt to try, but in my case, my Allianz plan only partially covered the hotel expenses I submitted.

  • Travellers must have underlying travel insurance in place with a minimum of £7,500 cancellation cover per person**.
  • Available to those who are UK, Isle of Man and Channel Island domiciled.
  • UK is defined as – England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
  • Channel Islands is defined as – Jersey, Guernsey, Sark, Alderney and Herm.
  • Can be endorsed for most countries.

Available to travellers aged up to 70 years and in good health at the start date of the policy.

Trip Limits

As long as the underlying policy provides cover, high Value Cancellation does too.

  • Pre-existing physical, psychological or medical conditions.
  • Pregnancy or any related problems.
  • Financial causes, fraud, misrepresentation or concealment by the Proposer.
  • Contractual dispute including wilful breach of a contract by the insured.
  • Any act of terrorism (unless additional cover is provided and the additional premium paid).

In the event of any circumstances or incidents which could give rise to a claim under this Insurance, the Insured will: -

i) give notice immediately on becoming aware of any circumstance or incident.

ii) confirm the facts in writing as soon as possible, with as much information as is available.

iii) make no admission of liability or promise of payment without the prior written consent of Underwriters or their appointed representatives.

iv) take all steps to minimise or avoid any loss hereunder and act upon the instructions of Underwriters or their representatives.

v) provide Underwriters or their appointed representatives with: -

a. all necessary assistance in a timely manner.

b. all information requested.

c. all documentation and records necessary to evaluate and establish indemnity hereunder.

d. copies or extracts of any documents that may be required by Underwriters or their appointed representatives. without expense to Underwriters.

vi) not include the premium or any costs incurred in the preparation of any claim made under this Insurance.

vii) forward immediately to Underwriters or their representatives any letter, writ, or other documentation received in connection with any claim made under this Insurance.

viii) disclose any other insurance effected by or on behalf of the Insured covering all or any part of the same Insured Trip.

ix) in the event of loss or damage by theft or dishonesty give immediate notice to the police and keep record of same with the appropriate police reference attached.

For this analysis, quotes were collected from the U.S. News ranking of the 12 best travel insurance companies to determine average insurance costs for a variety of trip types

This research can give you an idea of your next trip’s insurance costs and what you should consider when purchasing a travel insurance policy.

The average cost of travel insurance across all 12 of the providers analyzed is $53. This is based on a basic travel insurance policy for a 40-year-old male traveling for 14 days from New York to Mexico.

Many factors affect the insurance price, including your age, the destination, the duration of your trip and the travel insurance company. You will find that different insurance companies and their quotes can vary from one to the next.

Below are the quotes that were acquired during this study. The prices are based on a travel insurance policy for a 40-year-old male traveling from New York to Mexico for 14 days from June 1st 2024.

Trawick International offered the most cost-efficient insurance policy for a trip costing $1,000 in Mexico at a cost of $25.04 for a basic policy, while AIG Travel Guard’s policy costs the most at $82.71.

Getting quotes from several insurance companies can determine the best-priced policy for you - although this study received a low price from one company, you may find another insurance firm will quote you less.

The study shows that travel insurance costs increase for older policyholders, and the lowest prices favor those aged between 20 and 39 with an average cost of $41.

People aged 80 years and older have the most expensive insurance costs when traveling; the average cost was $163 for those in this age group.

Data note: This analysis looked at the average cost of travel insurance for a person of each age traveling from New York to Mexico for 14 days from June 1st, 2024, based on a trip cost of $1,000, with no pre-existing health conditions.

Travel insurance costs by trip cost

This study analyzed the travel insurance trip costs in-depth, getting quotes from 12 insurance companies.

The cheapest quote received was $24.56 from Trawick International to cover a 14-day excursion of a trip that cost $500.

Data note: Travelex and Allianz only offered premium insurance policies for trips costing $20,000 or more, while quotes for all other trip lengths and from other providers offered a choice between basic or premium insurance policies.

The average travel insurance price is 5.3% of your total trip cost - for example, if your trip costs $1,000 in total, then $53 would cover your travel insurance policy.

The average travel insurance price ranges from 4.3% to 8.4% of the total trip cost. The price of insurance as a percentage of total trip cost is highest for trips costing $500 and lowest for trips costing $5,000.

The cost of travel insurance by trip length

The length of a trip is a factor in travel insurance costs - the longer the duration, the higher the insurance price, although the difference in average price by trip length was fairly small. This study reviewed insurance quotes from 12 travel companies on policies that cover 3-days, 7-days, 10-days, and 14-days.

This study found that the average cost of travel insurance was the lowest for a 3-day trip at $46, and highest for a 14-day trip at $54. The lowest price for two weeks’ travel insurance was $25.04 compared to the highest, which came to $82.71, showcasing a wide range from one company to the next.

Although travel insurance prices got gradually higher as the length of the trip increased, the price per day is much better value on longer trips, costing an average of $3.81 per day on a 14-day trip, compared to $15.40 for a 3-day trip.

Various factors affect the price of travel insurance, including the destination, policyholder's age, trip length, and the total trip cost.

If you’re traveling for a longer duration and paying more for your vacation, then that will also impact the insurance - it will cost the company more to keep you covered; if they need to pay for a cancellation then the more expensive accommodation will cost more for them to compensate.

Age can also alter the cost of trip insurance - with the price often hiking up for seniors. This is probably because older explorers are more likely to be at risk of illnesses or accidents.

Here are some of the key factors that directly affect your travel insurance costs:

Destination

Each destination has a different cost for medical facilities and treatments, subsequently impacting the cost of travel insurance.

The longer the trip, the more it will cost to cover your travel insurance; it’s no surprise that the price increases when traveling for longer.

The longer an expedition or vacation, the more costs the insurance will have to cover, and there’s an increased chance of accidents or illnesses.

With the previous taken into account, you can expect the trip length to impact the cost of your travel insurance directly.

The trip cost will make your insurance more expensive. A pricey vacation will have a bigger risk for the insurance company.

If there’s a cancellation or other issues, it will cost more to rectify. There’s a clear correlation between trip cost and travel insurance prices.

The older you are, the more costly your policy will be. Insurance gets more expensive, especially for those 60 years and above.

Our research exhibits a pattern; the older a policyholder is, the higher the insurance costs.

If you’re covering insurance for a family rather than one person, then you will most likely get a more expensive price.

With that said, you could be saving money by doing this. It’s often a better option than taking out separate policies for each individual.

Compared to scuba diving or mountain extravaganzas, a general vacation is quite the contrast.

Some activities require specialist insurance. Be sure that you’re covered for everything you’re doing.

Lots of travel insurance companies will be able to protect you, but if you are getting involved in active sports, the cost will rise.

Reduce travel insurance costs by ensuring savvy decisions and not paying for cover that you don’t need.

Here are some of our tips for saving money on travel insurance.

  • Get annual coverage - Lots of insurance companies will cover you for the entire year. This is only worth it for travelers who frequent countries abroad multiple times a year. If you plan two or more trips in the same year, it’s worth exploring the annual insurance options.
  • More than one traveler - If you’re traveling with family or somebody else, rather than taking out several policies, you could save money with a multi-policy or family travel insurance.
  • Check if you are covered - Before filling in the policy details, see whether your bank or house insurance already covers you. Some companies will cover you for free. But often, it provides you with basic insurance. There are lots of credit cards now offering complimentary travel insurance all year round. Check to see if you’re already covered or if it makes sense to use a credit card for your travel insurance.
  • Don’t pay for cover you don’t need - There’s no need to get premium travel insurance if you only require basic needs. Check the policy and what it covers. You can ensure you pay for what you need rather than wasting money on insurance you don’t need.
  • The length of your trip - Long vacations or travel periods will likely result in a more costly travel insurance document. This is something to take into account, if you book for less time then the insurance will also be more affordable. However, when calculated by cost against trip length, you get more for your money. The average quote cost for seven days in this study was $49 compared to $55 for 14 days.
  • Try different companies - Use our study to find out what prices were quoted but don’t allow that to deter you from getting a full range of quotes. One company may offer our policy the lowest price but present you with your highest quote. Get different quotes and evaluate them, not only for price but for coverage, and value-for-money and check that they’re a reputable insurance firm.

What’s required for travel insurance

When filling out the forms for your travel insurance, you will need personal details like your name, date of birth, and email address. You’ll also need information regarding your travel plans like where you’re traveling to and the duration of your trip.

There are lots of different terms and types of policies to be aware of; here are some of the things you should check that your insurance policy covers:

  • Medical Expenses : Ensure that all injuries and illnesses are covered, if you require medical attention or treatments, you want them covered in your insurance.
  • Personal Injury : Cover accidents caused by you, whether you injure yourself or somebody else; you will want all accidents and emergencies within your travel insurance.
  • Lost or Stolen Belongings : If your items are damaged, stolen, lost or delayed, you want to be protected. Delayed baggage will result in small compensation, and lost or damaged items will be replaced.
  • Missed Departure : In case of missing a flight or having a trip canceled, you can ensure that you get a new flight as well as any expenses you incur paid for by the insurance firm.
  • Cancel Any Time : This isn’t necessarily a must. However, some insurance companies have a Cancel for Any Reason coverage that will allow you a partial reimbursement if you cancel your trip.

For the age breakdown, the same method was used, changing only the age of the profile when gathering the quotes.

To find the breakdown by trip cost, the 40-year-old male base profile was used, changing the trip cost for each quote. For Travelex and Allianz, only premium insurance policies were available for trips costing $20,000 and over.
