How to make a claim

Policyholders

Making a claim

If you are a Lloyd’s policyholder and you have any questions or concerns about your policy or the handling of a claim you should, in the first instance, contact the firm or individual that sold the insurance to you. Please refer to your policy wording for the relevant contact details, in most cases this information will be at the back of your policy documentation.

To help you find the right contact at Lloyd’s you can also consult our market directory which will allow you to search by the type of insurance and country.

Need help finding the right person

Whilst Lloyd’s is not involved in processing claims, our dedicated team may be able to put you in touch with the right person to help you. Please provide us with all the information you do have regarding your policy.

Making a claim on your travel insurance

This advice applies to England. See advice for See advice for Northern Ireland , See advice for Scotland , See advice for Wales

Travel insurance can give you extra protection if your holiday doesn't go as planned. This is very important if you are travelling independently because you may find yourself stranded with no way to get home and no rep to help sort out your holiday problem.

Read this page to find out more about what you need to do if you have to make a claim on your travel insurance policy.

Remember to take your travel insurance policy number and emergency contact telephone number with you when you travel

if a problem happens while you're away, keep receipts for everything you need to buy to support your claim

if possible, get your insurer to agree to medical treatment before it's carried out

always tell your insurer about an existing health problem before you take out insurance, or you may not be covered

report lost or stolen belongings to the local police within 24 hours of them going missing. If this isn't possible tell the person in charge where they went missing.

Making a claim while you're travelling

Make sure you take your insurance policy number and the emergency contact details away with you. This is so you know exactly who to speak to first if you have a problem and it can be dealt with as quickly as possible. If you're travelling abroad, check you've got the right phone number.

Making a claim when you get home

If you need to make a claim on your travel insurance policy when you get home, check the following things before you send off your claim:

you're within the time limits for making a claim

you're covered for what you're claiming for

how much the excess is. The excess is the amount of money that your insurer will take off the claim. It may not be worth making a claim if the amount you're claiming for is less than this

the small print . Make sure there's nothing in the terms and conditions that prevents you from claiming

whether it's a new for old policy. If it isn't, the amount you get for items you're claiming for will be less than the cost of replacing them. This is because the insurer takes off money for wear and tear.

Contact your insurer as soon as possible and ask them to send you a claim form. They may be able to email this to you to speed things up. Complete the claim form carefully and keep a copy for yourself.

You'll need to include copies of all paperwork that will help your claim, including receipts or medical certificates. You should also keep copies of the originals in case your claim is queried or refused.

Your insurer may ask if you have other insurance that may cover the claim. You'll need to let them know if you have other insurance that may also offer cover, for example, home contents insurance.

Making a claim for lost, stolen or damaged items or luggage

You're expected to take reasonable care of your belongings while you're travelling. The insurer will want to see evidence that you did this.

If your belongings are lost or stolen, you should tell the local police within 24 hours of the items going missing. If this isn't possible, tell someone else such as your tour rep, hotel manager or transport provider and get a written report.

If you have to replace essential items, such as toiletries or emergency clothing, ask for receipts to send as evidence with your claim.

Making a claim for medical emergencies and personal injury

If you need medical treatment while you're away, try to contact your insurer straightaway and get them to agree to the treatment. You should do this before it's carried out, although this may not be possible in an emergency.

You may have to pay up-front for medical treatment and claim it back when you get home. Always make sure you get receipts for any treatment or medication you're given.

If you did not tell your travel insurer about an existing health problem before you took out the insurance, you may not be covered if you need treatment  for this while you're away.

You may not be able to claim for the cost of any medication that you usually need and may have to take while you're travelling.

If you're a UK resident and have a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), you can still use it to get healthcare in EU countries until it expires.

If you don't have an EHIC or it has expired, you can apply for a UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) on the NHS website. You can use a GHIC to get healthcare in EU countries at a reduced cost or sometimes for free.

If you’re visiting Norway you can use your UK passport to get medically necessary healthcare there. Some countries have agreements with the UK to give free emergency treatment.

Travel insurance should cover you for pregnancy if you are in normal health. However, some airlines won't let you fly if your baby is due within a few weeks.

Making a claim if you have to cancel or shorten your trip

If you need to make a claim because you've cancelled or shortened your trip, your insurer will only accept your claim if you have a good reason for doing this. Reasons may include:

unexpected death, illness or injury of you, your partner or people travelling with you

a fire, burglary or unexpected damage happens to your home

you're made redundant

you're pregnant and are advised not travel after you took out the insurance

you're called for jury service or as a witness in court.

If you have to come home early, your insurer will usually only refund any extra travelling costs and the cost of any unused time in your holiday accommodation.

Lloyds Banking Group updates on customer support measures

travel insurance claim lloyds bank

16 June 2020

  • Bank to contact more than one million customers coming to the end of mortgage, card and loan repayment holidays
  • Branch colleagues called more than 500,000 local customers to check on their well-being during lockdown
  • Over 97% of branches open and hours extended as lockdown restrictions ease

Lloyds Banking Group continues to support its customers during the pandemic.

Support for older customers, the vulnerable, and key workers

  • We set up dedicated new phone lines for the over 70s and for NHS workers. We’ve now taken over a quarter of a million calls across the two services since the end of March, allowing us to prioritise supporting these customers with their urgent needs.
  • In addition, our branch colleagues have proactively made over half a million well-being calls to customers local to them, explaining the support available during the outbreak and, where appropriate, signposting to local community organisations and voluntary groups.
  • Through our new partnership with WeAreDigital, a specialist phone line has been introduced to help customers access the internet and learn new skills such as online shopping and connecting virtually with family and friends.
  • The number of over 70s registering for internet banking has tripled compared to the same period last year. We’ve also added new colleague video guides to our websites showing customers how to meet many of their most common banking needs online.
  • For those needing face-to-face support with their urgent financial needs, over 97% of our branches are open, and we’ve recently extended opening hours from 10am – 2pm to 9.30am – 3.30pm, Monday to Friday.

Payment holidays

  • More than one million customers have now had payment holidays approved for mortgages, personal loans, credit cards and car finance. Customers can apply for a repayment holiday using our simple online forms.
  • We are already contacting customers who are reaching the end of their repayment holidays to support them in restarting payments. For those who may not yet be in a position to restart their payments we’ll be able to work with them to identify suitable options. For mortgage customers this may include applying to extend their current payment holiday.
  • We are also proactively contacting customers who have cancelled direct debits so they understand the options available to them and to ensure they are aware of the consequences of stopping a direct debit versus requesting a payment holiday.

Current accounts and overdrafts

  • Customers who are facing travel disruption are benefiting from the additional insurance and support provided with packaged back accounts including the Halifax Ultimate Reward Current Account and Lloyds Bank Platinum account. More than 35,000 travel insurance claims have been processed and 100,000 queries answered.
  • All customers can now access a new travel disruption tool on our websites, to help them understand the best options available in managing cancelled or rearranged trips, including advice on reclaiming spent funds.
  • Packaged bank account customers with breakdown cover have had their policies extended at no extra cost in June to ensure they can benefit from the AA’s home start service. Tens of thousands of customers using their cars for the first time in weeks have benefitted already from this extension.
  • More than nine million personal current account customers with arranged overdrafts can benefit from fee-free overdraft borrowing up to £500 until 9 July.

Easier payments and access to cash

  • More than 14 million contactless card transactions have been made for values of between £30 and £45 since April. This means 14 million fewer chip and PIN touchpad transactions since the contactless limit was increased. Contactless now accounts for more than 70% of all face-to-face debit card transactions.
  • Over the past month our customers have deposited an average of 146,000 cheques per week using our mobile cheque deposit service. This is up by almost 50% compared to pre-lockdown levels.

Vim Maru, Retail Director, Lloyds Banking Group, said: “Our colleagues are working tirelessly to support customers as we all continue to deal with the impact of the pandemic. We want to be there for our customers when they need us and that’s why we’re proactively contacting anyone coming to the end of a payment holiday, to ensure they are fully supported, and understand the options available. We’ve also extended our branch opening hours to ensure more customers have access to face-to-face help should they need it.”

Lloyds Bank Travel Insurance Review

Mr. Travel

Everything you need to know before you buy travel insurance from Lloyds Bank!

The experts say:

Lloyds Bank's Retail Platinum travel insurance has been highly rated by Which?, scoring 70%, and ranking 42nd out of all 71 providers. It offers superior Covid cover, with a medical expenses limit of £10,000,000 - impressive! Airline failure is covered as standard, and there is a generous baggage cover of £2,500 and cancellation cover of £5,000. Unfortunately the excess payable on medical claims is not known, and the Fairer Finance Rating is also not available. All in all this looks like a great policy for those wanting comprehensive coverage at a reasonable price.

What Lloyds Bank customers are saying right now:

  • 👍 Lloyds has friendly and helpful staff.
  • 😃 Good customer service is offered at the bank.
  • 💪 Lloyds has been reasonable over the 36 years they have been around.
  • 🙌 They have provided simple explanations to customers.
  • 🤩 The interest rates have increased this year.
  • 🤬Lloyds refuses to change mortgages from a tracker rate to a fixed rate, resulting in soaring repayments.
  • 😡They employ money laundering as an excuse to refuse service.
  • 😤Staff are incompetent and have appalling attitudes with customers.

Lloyds Bank customer reviews summary

Lloyds Bank travel insurance has been receiving mixed reviews, with customers citing disappointment in the 'random sampling' feature that can increase premiums without warning. Customers also report a lack of English-speaking staff and long waiting times, as well as having to provide personal data to receive refunds. On the other hand, some customers have praised the helpfulness of Lloyds Bank staff and their willingness to explain details clearly. Despite this, it is clear that customers should proceed with caution when considering Lloyds Bank travel insurance. Overall score: 6/10

A shared vision of using technology to engage customers

Both companies said they are committed to supporting their customers and clients, “supplying them with propositions that are always relevant to their specific and evolving needs”.

Tim Tozer, CEO at Allianz Partners UK, said the companies share the vision of using technology to make it easier for customers to engage with them.

“We are investing heavily in our systems and working closely alongside Lloyds Banking Group to ensure that both of our customer journeys are seamlessly integrated.”

Allianz Partners UK said it is drawing from the global capability of its parent company, delivering technology driven, user friendly experiences for Lloyds Banking Group customers.

This will enable policyholders to access information about their cover, manage their account, request assistance, and submit claims via their online account or banking app.

Improving claiming handling efficiency and communication

Not only will this integrate the travel insurance product into Lloyds Banking Group’s services, it will also improve the efficiency of current claims and communication processes, making a broader range of contact channels available to customers at the touch of a button.

Lee Taylor, Chief Sales Officer at Allianz Partners UK said:

“Although we have seen consumers start to take advantage of online services for some time, the rate of this shift has really accelerated over the past year as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.

“With social distancing measures in place at bank branches and strict ‘stay at home’ guidelines enforced, even the least tech-savvy consumers have become more familiar with online banking.

“We are pleased to have been able to capture and incorporate these trends into our detailed offering to Lloyds Banking Group so that the brand is able to continue its strategic journey going forward, this being to remain at the forefront of digitalised delivery of quality customer service.”

Allianz Partners to underwrite Lloyds travel insurance

Uk-based lloyds banking group has selected allianz partners uk to underwrite and administer its travel insurance offering.

Allianz Partners UK already supplies home emergency cover to Lloyds Banking Group customers, making this contract for travel insurance a significant broadening of the commercial relationship between the two companies. Under the recently signed contract, Allianz Partners UK will provide travel cover for holders of Added Value Accounts and Ultimate Reward Current Accounts for Lloyds Bank, Bank of Scotland and Halifax, including the transfer of these customers from the current supplier.

“We are very pleased to extend our partnership with Lloyds Banking Group,” commented Tim Tozer, CEO at Allianz Partners UK. “Not only does Lloyds Banking Group share our customer-first operational focus, we also share the vision of using technology to make it easier for customers to engage with us. We are investing heavily in our systems and working closely alongside Lloyds Banking Group to ensure that both of our customer journeys are seamlessly integrated. We look forward to helping Lloyds Banking Group deliver the high levels of service quality that it is renowned for to its customers.”

Accessing travel coverage via the online banking app

Allianz Partners UK is drawing from the global capability of its parent company, delivering technology-driven, user-friendly experiences for Lloyds Banking Group customers. This will enable policyholders to access information about their cover, manage their account, request assistance and submit claims via their online account or banking app. Not only will this integrate the travel insurance product into Lloyds Banking Group’s services, it will also improve the efficiency of current claims and communication processes, making a broader range of contact channels available to customers at the touch of a button.

Lee Taylor, Chief Sales Officer at Allianz Partners UK, noted: “Although we have seen consumers start to take advantage of online services for some time, the rate of this shift has really accelerated over the past year as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. With social distancing measures in place at bank branches and strict ‘stay at home’ guidelines enforced, even the least tech-savvy consumers have become more familiar with online banking. We are pleased to have been able to capture and incorporate these trends into our detailed offering to Lloyds Banking Group so that the brand is able to continue its strategic journey going forward, this being to remain at the forefront of digitalised delivery of quality customer service.”

Allianz Partners has recently rolled out enhancements to its travel insurance products that provide coverage to customers who become ill with Covid-19.

The move is a strategic alignment between two of the UK’s most prestigious brands;  Lloyds Banking Group as Britain’s preferred financial partner and Allianz Partners UK, a provider of market-leading travel insurance solutions and part of Munich-based Allianz, the  Interbrand Best Global Brands report ’s number 1 insurance brand globally. Llloyds Bank insurance not adequate

Cool Cruiser

I'm sure this has been covered in the past but can't seem to find it. We have insurance with lloyds bank but from the wording it looks like we are not covered for repatriation due to covid. I've got a quote from holiday Extras via p&o website but it's come back as over £200 for our 2 week cruise. Just wondered if anyone can advise what they did in a similar situation. I seem to remember there was a top up policy for a lot less? Thanks for any help

Apologies please ignore. Weve phoned the bank and we are covered for this. They are emailing us a certificate

Thanks for the post!

I am utterly confused as to buying travel insurance. MSC says it must cover cancellation, interruption, repatriation expenses, quarantine, medical assistance and related expenses, as well as hospitalization.

Does your insurance through the bank cover you for that word for word? And if not, what does it say it you don't mind me asking? Thanks!

Hi. My other half rang bank and read the p&o requirements to them. They said yes we were covered. Apparently existing customers only. We have a platinum account. We'll study the documentation when it arrives of course. I agree, so confusing.

The Lloyds policy is with Allianz who are acknowledged as one of the market leaders.  However be aware of the following:

Quarantine payments are limited to £1,000

Basic cruise cover is included but there is no cover for things like missed ports (some cruises are currently have a lot of port alterations).

I have this policy attached to my Halifax (part of Lloyds group) account and researched it very thoroughly last year.  Due to the complexity of some of my travel arrangements I purchased a new policy with very detailed cruise and covid cover from, on this occasion the Post Office.  I'm 66 years old with a few minor existing medical conditions to declare and a full worldwide policy with every bell and whistle cost £330.  I have literally every add on you can think of for that price.

Hi Megabear. Thanks for the info. I do remember you researching all aspects of insurance.

We're not bothered about missed ports. Just happy to be on the ship but I can understand others feeling frustrated. We'll have a look at the policy wording when it arrives. Thanks for info about post office.

Our insurance was with Lloyds Bank until last April.  We were assured everything that was needed to cruise last year was covered but DH did ask them to put that in writing clearly - the policy document did not state that all needs were covered.  So we turned up to cruises with that extra wording, plus the policy document with certain things highlighted.  Not sure if that wording has changed now.

We have changed to another insurance when the length of individual holidays went down after their change of underwriter (possibly not the right word, please excuse if not).   I think it reduced from about 45 days to 30 days, which is not adequate for us, otherwise no problems with them as insurers, other than we recently had to pay for our account, c.f. the previous free situation if we kept to a certain minimum balance.

We now have cover for hols up to 60 days, but have lost the disruption insurance which was good, though in the current climate we will be sticking to packages or will have holidays put together by an agent, e.g. Kuoni who have put together a couple of individual long haul hols for us previously at good prices and service/hotels were brilliant, (we were upgraded in most hotels).

Thanks Tring. We have now received the letter from Lloyd's and it is adequate. It is 31 days which is fine for us.

The bank's shares fell 2% in early trading, compared with a 0.3% dip in the FTSE 100. Lloyds said higher operating costs were partly to blame for the profit fall, including a new sector-wide Bank of England levy on lenders and a 100-million-pound additional charge to cover employee severance after a recent round of layoffs.
