Top airlines flying from victoria to seattle.

It was much better than expected. Short flight and smaller plane so no entertainment or food.

It took around two hours to depart. Just sitting in the tamarack waiting. It impacted my traveling plans in a very dramatic way. When we returned, it took around two hours for us to be able to get our luggage. Ridiculous!!

I thought every thing was good with the acceptation of the long layover between Seattle and the Tampa trip.

While the flight and the legroom was good boarding took a long time. The different groups Boarding made no sense as those in the back of the flight boarded last causing delays as people try to find room for their luggage in the upper bins. While there were plenty of seats on the flights We were spaced so that some rows were filled and others were empty. My first flight was very crowded and uncomfortable. On the way back both flights did not have Wi-Fi nor the entertainment package. We were only made aware of this a few hours before the flight. Since the flight was in the morning, I was asleep and was not able to download Books or other media to my phone. This is my first time flying Alaska airlines and I will admit to thinking twice before I do so again.

Our flight was delayed by six hours, our plane never left Portland the night before but the airline didn’t inform anyone till two hours before a six am flight. The plane, our plane never left the west coast! No plane no flight, simply let folks know when you know, not hours and hours later. No one apologized, no one said much of anything, we were just expected to wait quietly and await instructions.

The staff were great and the layover times were excellent no multiple hours. I just hate the Boxed Water. So you really have to purchase high price water in the airport.

Both flights were delayed. We sat on the tarmac on Boise for 3 hours with little updates

This flight was significantly affected by poor wifi connections. I couldn’t get my work done because the wifi kept dropping. Even texts were not going through. There is no seat power in premium class either. I fly a lot. Today was my 10th flight in 4 weeks. This was by far the only flight that was sub par.

4 out of 4 flights cancelled or delayed. 5th trip with similar experience

On time, comfortable seats with plenty of leg room, nice staff. Pretty good!

My flight from Victoria was late taking off and then I was rebooked on a new flight from Vancouver to SFO without my knowledge the next day. I actually made it to the gate on time so I could have boarded my flight but Air Canada rebooked me instead. Completely unprofessional and unpleasant experience with no grace from the Air Canada staff. I will not fly Air Canada again

Headphones for the movies have too much bass and can't be adjusted. Almost impossible to hear. Great movie selections but can't really watch them because you can't hear them. Also the system is very slow.

There was no entertainment at our seats. The flight was comfortable and we had leg room. The snack we had was really good.

Economy seats were surprisingly comfortable, and snacks not too bad. Checked luggage arrived at destination without problems. It was annoying to wait until last to board as lowest-tier seats but understand it’s difficult to gauge when loading a full plane At least checked carryon luggage seemed to come off first. Annoying to have to use app to order food/drink when wifi availability didn’t allow time for it. Advance communication would have helped Food on menu seemed highly processed and unpalatable, overpriced and over packaged. So maybe a good thing to have missed chance to order

As is pretty much the norm with Air Canada now, we left late from the gate (45 minutes late). This is my 12th flight with AC in the last 12 months and 10 of those flights were either late or cancelled. AC essentially has a monopoly in Canada so they have carte blanche to charge exorbitant rates now and give poor service, with no repercussions.

They did not have any meal options left on the menu. Only snacks.

The crew suki/zuki is very rude. The zoning is only being announce once and there’s no way we will know what is currently allowed to board. I’m zone 5 (currently it was zone 3 but hich I didn’t know coz i went to the restroom). I saw a guy (zone 4) start boarding also. Then my husband (zone 5) started boarding also. But when it’s my turn, he said that i have to wait coz it’s still zone 3 and I questioned him why was my husband allowed when we are both zone 5 and i pointed to him my husband who’s boarding already and he told me to be attentive next time. And i told him he was so rude u like the other lady staff who is nice. The lady is the one who allowed the man (zone 4) and my husband to start boarding. There were 2 lines (the lady and suki)

The original connecting flight from Vancouver to Portland was canceled and then delayed. I ended up waiting for almost seven hours instead of three.

Air Canada was great and boarding was fine. The issue was that we received an email from Air Canada to check in (we were directed to Air Canada’s website). When we tried to check in online we couldn’t. So we decided to go to Air Canada check-in desks at the airport. When we arrived there they said that we needed to check in with United Airlines (which was in a different terminal and required an air train or long walk to get there). There was no indication during the booking process that we needed to check in with United so it was impossible to know. Hopefully this can be fixed going forward to travelers know which airline is processing their check-in. Seems like a basic thing that should be communicated during the check-in process. Other than that, everything else went well.

Poor communication, when they chose to change my airlines to Alaska when entering back in the US. Even gate agents were confused.

How To Get From Seattle To Victoria On The Clipper Ferry

FRS Clipper the Seattle to Victoria ferry leaving the harbour.

The Clipper Ferry , launched back in 1986, has been serving up quick trips from downtown  Seattle to downtown Victoria for decades now.

In fact the Victoria Clipper V is the fastest ship in their fleet & the only ferry that goes directly from Seattle to Victoria.  Making it the best way to travel to Victoria, BC Canada in my opinion.

Operating a year-round service you can take this high-speed passenger ferry round-trip up to 2 times per day, depending on the season . Making it easy to pop by Victoria for a day trip, or longer.

How to Book Tickets

Booking your tickets for the Seattle to Victoria ferry is as easy as pie!

⛴️ You can buy ferry tickets online , but do it ahead of time to ensure you get your preferred seating and sailing schedule.

You can also buy them from the Seattle Terminal the day of the sailing, if there’s enough room.

While you can do a day trip, I recommend at least a long weekend in Victoria.

With the ferry schedule, you’ll be pretty limited to what you can see and do, as you’ll only have about 5 hours on a day trip. But if you’re thinking of just sticking close to downtown or visiting the Butchart Gardens, it can be done.

LOCAL TIP: For the best price book at least 7 days in advance and travel during the week. Fri/Sat departures from Seattle and Sun departures from Victoria are $10USD more expensive.

Fare and Seating Options

travel victoria to seattle

1. Economy Fare (Main Cabin / Lower Deck)

Looking for the most budget friendly option? Then the main cabin economy fare is your best bet. As the ride is only 2 hours and 45 minutes long, we found the economy section wasn’t the end of the world.

The Economy Panoramic Class seating upgrade guarantees a window seat. Definitely choose a window seat if you can. The views are much better.

We found it to be still comfortable, and you can still purchase local food, alcohol, and other  beverages. Or try out the gift shop, for some unique west coast souvenirs.

2. Vista Class Fare (Upper Deck)

Upgrade for about $30 USD extra per way for all the benefits of economy, plus spectacular panoramic views, leather seating with additional leg room, and table or group seating options in certain areas.

This does require walking up stairs though.

A Vista Panoramic Class premium seating upgrade guarantees a window seat.

3. Comfort Class (Upper Deck)

Comfort Class costs about an extra $60 USD each way.

I recommend the Comfort VIP class, if money isn’t tight.

It’s located on the front upper level of the vessel, and this section does get to board before other classes. Last time we splurged for comfort class & got a complimentary glass of prosecco and free access to the snack bar.

These seats offer greater leg room and excellent views of the front of the vessel.

The Comfort VIP premium seats upgrade gives you a window or front row seat.

As Comfort Cabins are on the upper deck, you will need to be able to walk up stairs to reach this area as well.

LOCAL TIP: Clipper Vacations offers 20% or more off of their ticket price & special hotel rates if you purchase a vacation hotel package through them directly, at specific Victoria hotels. They also have the option to add on activities such as Victoria whale watching , or the world-renowned Butchart Gardens etc. If you are planning a short trip, this can save you some time, and hassle.

Sailing Schedules and Frequency

The passenger-only ferry from Seattle to Victoria runs 1 or two times a day depending on the season / month.

Victoria Clipper ferry ride :

  • Ferry leaves Seattle at 8 am and arrives in Victoria at 11 am if there’s only one sailing.
  • Ferry leaves Seattle at 7:30 am or 3:15 pm and arrives in Victoria at 10:45am or 6pm if there’s two sailings that day.

As times can change it’s best to check out their schedule online .

Onboard the FRS Clipper Ferry

A couple of quick tips I’ve learned over multiple trips:

  • While the ferry is heated, I found it can get pretty cold with the doors being opened and closed throughout the trip. Make sure you bring a cozy sweater, jacket or even a blanket with you.
  • Carry-on your luggage for the quickest boarding & getting off the ferry and through customs.
  • The Clipper rate (must use their voucher) for the Bell Street Garage in Seattle is a reasonable $10 / day. I’ve had friends even park their car overnight the night before, when coming to visit us, as it’s cheaper than hotels & other garages in the area.
  • Vista class gets you on the upper level, without the higher price of Comfort Class. Once on board, you can sometimes sit in another seat (if one is available).

Amenities & Services Onboard

Well, it’s more than just a ride—it’s a mini vacation on the water! If you’re lucky you may even get to do some impromptu west coast whale watching .

Once aboard, you’ll find plenty of amenities to make your journey comfy and entertaining.

  • Peckish? They’ve got a snack bar serving up breakfast items, light meals and snacks. Everything from yogurt parfaits & pastries, to sandwiches, salads and Seattle’s own  Chocolate Truffle Bars. I love those truffle bars.
  • Need to stay connected? There’s WiFi on board, although it might be a tad slower than your home connection. Plenty of outlets to keep your gadgets charged on the journey too.
  • Looking for gifts? Try their gift shop on the main deck for stuffed animals, mugs, clothing and more.
  • And duty-free shopping? Yep, they’ve got a selection of those too. US & International Travelers 19+ can purchase one litre or one bottle per person travelling into Canada.

So kick back, relax, and enjoy your mini cruise —Clipper Ferry’s got you covered!

Bringing Pets Aboard Clipper Vacations

Cat in soft pet carrier for travelling.

Yes pets can be brought aboard the Victoria Clipper vessel. They must have the appropriate vaccinations, be in a pet carrier, and accompanied by their human (no pets as cargo).

Tips for bringing your pet on the Clipper from Seattle to Victoria:

  • While they don’t take pet reservations in advance you should let them know via their their contact page here so they can note it on your reservation.
  • Pet fee is $30 USD each way
  • Small Pets: If you have a smaller pet and want to bring it onto the passenger cabin for the ferry crossing, it must fit a 20”x11”x11” enclosed carrier (duffel bag/soft crate style with handles), and be 15lbs or less.
  • Check out all their pet info here.

Boarding & Luggage

The Victoria Clipper ferry allows you to check two pieces of luggage for $20.00 USD / $25.00 CAD each the day of your travels. As long as it weighs under 50lbs. Extra charges apply for more weight.

LOCAL TIP: They only allow you to pay for your luggage with a credit card, no cash, so make sure you are prepared for that. I found that out the hard way one time, luckily my travelling companion was more prepared.

Carry on allowance is one piece of luggage ( no more than 20 lbs &  24” x 16” x 10” including wheels and frame) and one personal item.

There’s storage racks on the lower deck of the vessel for carry-ons. I recommend using the racks by the rear exit, as the center racks are harder to get at and retrieve your luggage while everyone is disembarking.

⭐️ Also make sure you arrive at least one hour prior to departure, to leave enough time for checking in, boarding etc. The final boarding call is 20 minutes prior to departure.

LOCAL TIP: We find the waiting room in Victoria a bit crowded, so it’s not easy to bring strollers in, if you have littles.

Immigration Procedures

As you’ll be travelling between the US and Canada you will need to bring approved ID (Passport, Passport Card, Enhanced Driver License, from certain provinces or states, Nexus Card  or an Enhanced ID Card (EDL/ID).

Children aged 15 and under only need proof of their Canadian or US citizenship with an original or photocopy of a birth certificate or citizenship card.

A Visa may be required depending on your country of origin, or wherever your passport is from.

You will pass through Customs and Border Control.

⭐️ For more details check out all the ID & entry requirements. Make sure you follow US & Canada Custom requirements.

Inner Harbour Victoria wiht snow capped mountains in back.

Arriving in Victoria via the Clipper Ferry

The Clipper ferry from Seattle to Victoria docks right in Inner Harbour.

If I had one criticism, it would be that disembarking is a bit of barely controlled chaos as everyone rushes to clear customs. And even if you pay for Comfort Class, they don’t let you off first. So it’s a bit of a free for all.

You can easily walk anywhere in the downtown core from the ferry terminal. Or take a taxi or public transportation to your hotel, or sites.

Check out our list of favourite fun things to do in Victoria for all ages, from the Royal BC Museum, and High Tea at the Empress, to wandering Inner Harbour, taking a seaplane tour & having seafood lunch to go from Red Fish Blue Fish, and more.

🏨 Here are our favourite Family Hotels in Victoria Canada that we recommend to our friends and family to stay at too.

LOCAL TIP : Luggage can be stored at the Victoria side year-round (10am – 5pm) at the FRS Clipper Victoria Terminal. The cost is $15 CAD per bag (credit card only). Which we find super handy if you want to explore the city before you can check into your hotel. Or before catching the ferry back to Seattle.

Entrance to the Clipper fast ferry to Seattle.

Return Journey – Victoria to Seattle

The return ferry from Victoria to Seattle leaves one to two times daily depending on the season, and more often during holiday weekends.

You can check the ferry schedule here as the times change depending on which day of the week, and month.

Catch this international ferry at the Belleville Street Terminal. Be sure to leave extra time as we’ve found that customs takes longer on this leg of the journey.

Other Ferry Options from Seattle to Victoria

travel victoria to seattle

If you want to take your car from Seattle to Victoria, the 90 minute MV Coho Ferry from Port Angeles, WA to downtown Victoria is one option . They also allow walk-on & bicycle passengers.

There is something so charming about the Coho Ferry, and I’ve taken it a few times, both as a foot passenger & with a car. However it is a longer trip, especially if you take public transit.

But this ferry crossing is the more budget friendly option . Run by Black Ball Ferry Line, it will take about 2.5 hours to drive from Seattle to downtown Port Angeles.

Reservations are highly recommended. However they do put aside some space on a first come, first served basis.

  • Arrive at least 60 minutes prior to your sailing time.

Drive from Seattle to Vancouver, BC & Take the BC Ferry

Woman from behind facing the wake of the ferry near Tsawwassen Ferry Terminal.

Nothing quite compares to the journey through the Pacific Northwest’s lush landscapes, complete with vibrant, sprawling cityscapes, crisp coastal air, and an abundance of marine life sightings.

My brother just did this route last month, as it was about the same time as taking the Coho Ferry route (2.5 hours driving time). He wanted to show his son some more of Canada, and said it was quick and easy.

Here’s how you’ll navigate your way from the Emerald City to the City of Gardens via Vancouver, BC, aboard the remarkable BC Ferries.

Embark on a Road Trip to Vancouver

Fasten your seatbelts, friends, because we’re hitting the road for an adventure that’s just as thrilling as the destination!

Remember, you’ll be crossing the US-Canadian border, so bring proper identification (like a valid passport, passport card etc.).

US and Canadian citizens can use their NEXUS card for faster border crossing.

Here is a quick overview of Seattle to Tsawwassen Ferry terminal and the BC Ferries to Victoria.

You won’t actually be driving through downtown Vancouver itself. So if you want to sightsee, plan extra time, and a little detour.

  • The main route is I-5 North f rom downtown Seattle for 115 miles (185km). Heading past Bellingham to the Peace Arch border crossing between Blaine, Washington, and Surrey, British Columbia.
  • Once on the Canada side  stay on BC-99 N and follow signs for Delta. Once in Detta. BC you’ll be taking the exit onto BC-17 for about 16 miles (26 kilometres) until you see signs for the Tsawwassen Ferry Terminal.
  • You’ll know you’re close because of the salty air. Pull into the terminal, purchase your ticket (or use your pre-booked one), and then wait for the next ferry to the Swartz Bay Ferry Terminal in Victoria.

Keep in mind, driving times can really depend on traffic and border crossing times. It’s always best to give yourself lots of extra time just in case.

BC Ferries overview

  • Origin and Destination: Travelling between Tsawwassen and Swartz Bay
  • Duration of the Journey: 95 minutes
  • Bicycles allowed : Yes. No extra cost.
  • Pets Allowed: Yes, in your vehicle or the designated pet areas.
  • Sailing Frequency: Every hour or two, season dependent

A few Local Travel Tips we’ve found after 100s of ferry rides for a smooth sailing trip:

  •  ⭐️ Make a reservation for BC Ferries during peak travel times to ensure you secure a spot. There may be multiple sailing waits during the busy times without one.
  • Always keep an eye on traffic and border updates. Unexpected delays can happen!
  • Remember that you’ll be crossing an international border, so research any visa or entry requirements that may apply to you.
  • Travel with water and refillable bottles for you and your pets.
  • Check out the BC Ferries schedule and the current conditions / if there’s any wait times
  • The weather can be unpredictable in the Pacific Northwest, so dress in layers and carry a waterproof jacket.

Enjoy this Seattle to Victoria via Vancouver adventure, from bustling city centres to coastal ocean passages. So buckle up, breathe in the salty sea air, and let the journey unfold!

This two-day Seattle to Victoria trip itinerary includes some of the best things to do in the city, including visiting historic sites, taking in the views, and tasting some of the local food and drink. We’ve also provided plenty of alternative activity options for around the city, in case you want to switch it up or choose to stay an extra day. Enjoy!

How to Get From Seattle to Victoria

Getting to Victoria from Seattle is quite easy, as these two coastal cities are just across the Salish Sea from one another. You’ll need to either take the ferry or book a flight between Seattle and Victoria.

The Victoria Clipper Ferry is our favorite way to travel between Seattle, Washington and Victoria, Canada. It’s relaxing, scenic, and not too expensive. You don’t have to wait in an airport and it drops you off right in downtown Victoria. Plus, you’ll get incredible views of Puget Sound, the Strait of Juan de Fuca, and Victoria’s Harbour along the way!

If you choose to take the Victoria Clipper Ferry, you’ll be departing from Pier 69 in downtown Seattle and arriving at the Belleville Terminal in downtown Victoria. A one-way ride on the ferry will take about 2 hours and 45 minutes.

The Clipper is the most direct ferry route between Seattle and Victoria, but it only takes foot passengers. If you need your vehicle, you’ll need to take the Black Ball Ferry Line between Port Angeles and Victoria. Likely, you won’t need a vehicle though — most of Victoria’s highlights are within walking distance!

On the Victoria Clipper, you’re allowed up to two checked bags ($15 per bag) and one free carry-on item. Once you arrive in Victoria, you should either drop your bags off at your hotel (if they offer luggage storage) or store them at the FRS Clipper Victoria Terminal for $10.

Tips for Crossing the US-Canada Border Between Seattle to Victoria

While it may seem daunting to cross the border, if you have all your paperwork in order, you’ll be fine! Make sure that you check the official United States and Canadian government websites before your trip for up-to-date requirements for border crossings.

Here are some tips for crossing the US-Canada border between Seattle and Victoria:

  • Bring a passport (or other valid forms of identification ) to cross the US-Canada border. Make sure your passport isn’t expired (or close to expiring) before you make travel plans!
  • Any visitors to Canada over 12 years old must be fully vaccinated , with proof of vaccination and no COVID-19 symptoms. You need two doses of any accepted COVID-19 vaccines, at least two weeks before crossing the border. If you don’t meet these requirements, you will be turned away. Luckily, you no longer need a pre-entry COVID-19 test to enter Canada. A mask isn’t mandatory on the ferry but is required when going through customs in Victoria.
  • You must complete ArriveCAN within 72 hours before entering Canada. It’s best to finish your application before you arrive at the ferry terminal in Seattle. We recommend using the ArriveCAN app on your phone to fill out your application.
  • There are rules about what you can and cannot bring into the US and Canada . You’ll have to declare any of these restricted or prohibited items if you do bring them, and they may be confiscated. Even food items, like fruit, vegetables, and animal products, are heavily regulated. For this reason, it’s easiest to buy food when you arrive in Canada. There are plenty of grocery stores and restaurants close to the ferry terminal in Victoria.
  • Bringing your pets across the border? Make sure you bring all their documents with you. You’ll need a rabies vaccination and certificate of health signed by your veterinarian, as well as proof of ownership (e.g. adoption papers). Pet food is also regulated — you’re more likely to be able to bring pet food across the border if it’s unopened. Onboard the Clipper Ferry, your pet needs to be in a carrier and you’ll be charged an extra fee per pet.

Throughout downtown Victoria, you’ll find several historic squares, full of local vendors, boutique shops, popular restaurants and pubs, quaint cafes, and street entertainers. For those who love shopping or tasting local foods, these squares are a great stop on your travels in Victoria.

The charming Bastion Square is located in the heart of Victoria’s Old Town and is rich with history. Once the site of Fort Victoria, this vibrant area now has hip restaurants, shops, cafes, and a public market (Thursday – Sunday), featuring local artisans selling handcrafted goods.

For those who believe in the supernatural, Bastion Square is also known as the “Heart of Haunted Victoria”. Surrounded by haunted buildings, this historic square is one of the best stops on the Ghostly Walking Tours around downtown Victoria.

Bastion Square isn’t the only plaza you can stop at, though! Other squares that you might want to check out in downtown Victoria are Market Square and Centennial Square.

The beautiful coastline of Victoria along Dallas Road

Some of Victoria’s most spectacular coastline is found along Dallas Road, just south of Beacon Hill and downtown Victoria. Here, you’ll find oceanside cliffs, rugged shoreline, and cobble beaches, perfect for an afternoon of exploring.

One of the best ways to see this coastline is by walking the Dallas Road Waterfront Trail. This paved pathway starts near Ross Bay Beach and goes all the way to the Ogden Point Breakwater. You can walk any part of the walkway that you’d like.

Some of the highlights along the Dallas Road Waterfront Trail include Clover Point Park, Finlayson Point, and Spiral Beach. There are several spots where you can access Spiral Beach, but the best is at the end of Cook Street.

Top Travel Tips & Resources for Victoria, BC

  • Travel Insurance – If you’re travelling internationally, travel insurance is a must for any trip. Being covered by insurance is especially important when you’re going to an adventure-filled place like British Columbia. If you injure yourself while adventuring, you want to have insurance! We recommend using SafetyWing for international travel insurance. They are affordable and have great policies for travellers, digital nomads, and remote workers. Also, SafetyWing provides COVID-19 coverage, which many other insurance companies don’t cover.
  • Car Rental – We find the best deal on vehicle rental prices using RentalCars.com . They compare the prices for different car rental companies so you can find the best deals out there!
  • Accommodations – We prefer booking all of our hotels, hostels, and other accommodations through Booking.com because they have a flexible cancellation policy. Also, there are lots of different options on their platform, from hotels to vacation homes. Alternatively, Expedia and Hotels.com are good for booking accommodations. For vacation home rentals, VRBO is an excellent choice (they have lower fees than Airbnb, many of the same properties, and are more ethical).
  • Flights – You’ll find many good flight deals on Skyscanner or Google Flights. You can book flights through these websites and they’ll help you find the best prices and flight times. If you fly at less popular times (e.g. mid-week or red-eye flights), you can also save some money.
  • Tours – Get the most out of your vacation by taking a guided tour! This is a great way to see the city, adventure to exciting new locations, and learn about the local culture. Viator or GetYourGuide are great options for booking tours.

More options : The Victoria Express offers passenger-only, daily sailings in summer between Port Angeles and Victoria and Friday Harbor (on San Juan Island) and Victoria, www.victoriaexpress.com or 360-452-8088.

From Bellingham, Victoria/San Juan Cruises offers daily passenger-only summertime sailings to Victoria’s Inner Harbour, a mini-cruise that includes a buffet dinner. www.whales.com or 800-443-4552.

The quickest and most scenic — and probably the priciest — way to get between Seattle and Victoria is by floatplane; Kenmore Air offers frequent flights each day from Lake Union in downtown Seattle and from Kenmore at the north end of Lake Washington to Victoria’s Inner Harbour. Check its Web site for Internet Specials for the hourlong flight: www.kenmoreair.com or 866-435-9524. There’s also conventional air service between Sea-Tac Airport and Victoria, including nonstops on Horizon Air, but given airport check-in time and high fares it’s not a good way to go for most vacationers.

From Seattle to Vancouver, B.C.

You’ll need some kind of wheels to get between the two cities — car, train or bus. You could fly from Sea-Tac Airport, but that can end up taking longer, and cost much more than driving or taking the train.

It’s a straight shot north on Interstate 5 to the U.S.-Canada border at the Peace Arch at Blaine and then onward to Vancouver on Highway 99. Driving time is about three hours, more if the border is congested (as it often is on weekends).

Signs on the highways near the border give wait times. If the main crossing at the Peace Arch is busy, head to the nearby Pacific Highway border crossing (also called the Truck Crossing but open to all vehicles) just a few minutes drive east. The turnoffs are clearly marked on both sides of the border (State Route 543 on the Washington side; Highway 15 in B.C.)

Another option is the border crossing to the east at Lynden on State Route 539, also called Guide Meridian Road (Aldergrove and Highway 13 on the B.C. side). Get more border-crossing information, including wait times and Webcams, at www.wsdot.wa.gov/Traffic/border /

Amtrak has two round-trip trains a day between Seattle and Vancouver, B.C. It’s a scenic ride, with long stretches along waterfront, that takes about four hours. Get information and make reservations at www.amtrakcascades.com or phone 800-872-7245.

QuickShuttle goes from Sea-Tac Airport and downtown Seattle to various Vancouver stops, including the airport, downtown hotels and cruise-ship dock: www.quickshuttle.com or 800-665-2122. Greyhound offers about four round trips daily between the two cities, www.greyhound.com or 800-231-2222.

Bus travel time is about 3 ½ to four hours each way, depending on the number of stops and border congestion. (Buses between Seattle and Vancouver can be booked through Amtrak at www.amtrak.com .)

Vancouver to Victoria

The Georgia Strait separates the two major cities of British Columbia. The capital city of Victoria is on Vancouver Island while the city of Vancouver is on the mainland. The only way to get between them is by ferry or air.

B.C. Ferries : Ferries shuttle between the Tsawwassen ferry terminal (south of Vancouver and about a half-hour drive north of the U.S.-Canada border) and the Swartz Bay terminal on Vancouver Island, about a half-hour from Victoria. There are more than a dozen round-trip sailings daily; crossing time is 1 ½ hours. Reservations can be made for vehicles; for those who don’t want to take a car, most sailings have a bus aboard that carries passengers to downtown terminals. www.bcferries.com or 888-223-3779. (B.C. Ferries also sails from Horseshoe Bay, north of Vancouver, to Nanaimo on Vancouver Island about 70 miles north of Victoria.)

Prince of Whales : For a very different shipboard experience, combine a whale-watching tour and Vancouver-Victoria transport. The 74-passenger Ocean Magic vessel makes a summertime daily trip (four hours one way) between downtown Vancouver and downtown Victoria, slowing down to see orcas around B.C.’s Gulf Islands and Washington’s San Juans: www.princeofwhales.com or 888-383-4884.

Flights : Two companies offer frequent floatplane flights between downtown Vancouver and Victoria, a scenic, quick — about a half-hour flying time — but expensive way to go. Harbour Air offers more than 20 round trips daily, www.harbourair.com or 800-665-0212. West Coast Air has similar service, www.westcoastair.com or 800-347-2222.

For an exotic trip between the two cities, Helijet International flies helicopters from the downtown Vancouver waterfront to Victoria. Look for their daily standby specials for the half-hour flight at www.helijet.com or phone 800-665-4354.

6 Ways to Get from Seattle to Victoria, BC

kenmore air seaplane flying into victoria inner harbour

While Victoria is closer to American soil than its British Columbia mainland, it feels a bit like traveling to Europe. (It’s 75 miles from the Emerald City and just 28 miles from the closest US town, Friday Harbor.) Sure, the watery border can make you think twice about the best way to get to Victoria BC.

But if you know your options, getting there can be just as much fun as being there. The following outlines the six top ways to travel between this Vancouver Island metropolis and Washington’s high-tech hub — including a scenic seaplane flight!

How to Get from Seattle to Victoria, BC

Parliament Buildings in Victoria BC

Flights from Seattle to Victoria

1. kenmore air seaplane flight from seattle to victoria, bc.

A seaplane flight direct from Seattle to downtown Victoria is the fastest way to reach the British Columbia capital. (And, we happen to think the most beautiful as well.) Flights depart from both Kenmore Air’s Lake Union terminal and the Kenmore Air Lake Washington terminal .

Flight time is roughly 45 minutes and delivers passengers directly to Victoria’s Inner Harbour, right beside the iconic BC Parliament Buildings and Fairmont Empress. Lines are nearly non-existent. The Customs and Border Protection process is easily the most friendly and simple you’ll ever experience. And, the terminals offer beautiful views.

REQUIRED: A valid passport is required for all seaplane passengers traveling from the United States. If a passenger arrives at check-in without a valid passport, they will need to reschedule their flight.

2. Kenmore Air Express Flight from Boeing Field to Victoria International Airport

While other commercial airlines fly from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) to Victoria International Airport (YYJ), you can also catch a Kenmore Air ground shuttle to Boeing Field and enjoy our Kenmore Air Express service from Boeing Field to YYJ for a more executive experience. The actual flight time is roughly an hour and a half.

REQUIRED: An acceptable form of identification. (Passports are recommended, as these are the only reliable and universally-accepted travel and identification documents for international travel).

Seattle to Victoria Ferry Options

3. black ball ferry from port angeles.

The Black Ball company’s MV Coho ferry boat sails between Port Angeles and Victoria at least two times a day (except when out of service due to annual maintenance). At 341.6 feet long, the boat can carry just over 100 vehicles. The total time at sea is roughly 90 minutes from dock to dock.

However, reaching the MV Coho’s driving from Seattle to Port Angeles takes roughly 2.5 hours without traffic. And, that doesn’t include the time spent waiting in the ferry line.

REQUIRED: An acceptable form of identification. (Passports are recommended, as these are the only reliable and universally-accepted travel and identification documents for international travel).

4. BC Ferry from Tsawwassen in Vancouver, BC

If you’d like to have your personal vehicle while exploring Victoria and Vancouver Island, your other choice is to take a BC Ferry from Vancouver. The BC Ferry system’s Spirit of British Columbia provides regular service to Victoria’s Swartz Bay.

The boat is 547.9 feet and can carry up to 358 vehicles. Total sail time is rough 95 minutes, but this does not include the more than 2-hour drive from Seattle to the Tsawwassen ferry terminal or the time spent waiting for the ferry.

5. Victoria Clipper Passenger Ferry from Seattle

The Victoria Clipper is the only commercial vessel that offers direct service from Victoria to Seattle. Departing from Pier 69 in downtown Seattle and sailing directly to the Belleville Terminal in Victoria’s Inner Harbour, it is also the fastest water route. The total sail time is 2 hours and 45 minutes.

However, keep in mind this is a passenger-only Seattle to Victoria ferry. Bikes are permitted for a small handling fee. (Bike space is limited and there are limitations on the types of bikes permitted aboard. If you plan to bring your bike, be sure to book in advance and coordinate with the Clipper.)

REQUIRED: An acceptable form of identification. (Passports are recommended, as these are the only reliable and universally accepted travel and identification documents for international travel).

6. Washington State Ferry from Anacortes (currently not available)

Prior to the pandemic, the Washington State Ferries offered a seasonal route from Anacortes to Sidney, BC — a small harbor town located less than 30 minutes from downtown Victoria. Due to the pandemic, this route has been halted and will resume during the summer of 2023, at the earliest.

If you are interested in sailing to Victoria from Anacortes, we recommend monitoring the Washington State Ferries website for new information . Additionally, keep in mind that this Seattle to Victoria ferry option also requires a nearly 1.5-hour drive from downtown Seattle (assuming there’s no traffic) and waiting in the ferry line.

BONUS: Kenmore Air’s Convenient Flights Friday Harbor to Victoria, B.C.

Kenmore Air Express (the wheeled plane division) offers 20-minute scenic flights directly from Friday Harbor Airport to Victoria International Airport (YYJ). This is the only way to connect directly to the greater Victoria area and Vancouver Island, other than chartering a private flight or boat trip. Connecting flights are available flying out of Paine Field and Boeing International Airport.

How to Get to Victoria, BC, by Boat or Plane

By Allison Williams June 28, 2022

Despite sitting just 75 miles northwest of Seattle, British Columbia 's island city feels distinctly foreign. A Canadian capital with European flair, Victoria's signatures include fancy tea, a walkable downtown, horse-drawn carriages—and a giant body of water to cross from the mainland. We broke down the best ways to travel to the quaint Vancouver Island metropolis; don't forget your passport (or other appropriate border-crossing materials).

Black Ball Ferry from Port Angeles

Three times a day, the MV Coho sets sail from downtown Port Angeles on the Olympic Peninsula for a 90-minute trip to Victoria Harbour. The Black Ball company traces its roots to the nineteenth century and eventually sold most of its fleet to the state to form the Washington State Ferries. Today this route can carry just over 100 vehicles ($70 plus fees for most cars), making reservations ($11–16) recommended on weekends and hard to nab on holidays.

Reaching the American terminus from Seattle involves either a Washington State Ferries ride (say, Seattle to Bainbridge) or a drive over the Tacoma Narrows bridge. Given the middle-of-town end point in Victoria—the MV Coho docks practically on the front lawn of the famous parliament buildings—tourists can leave cars in Port Angeles and walk on the ferry ($21 plus fees).

BC Ferries from Tsawwassen

British Columbia's busiest port sits south of Vancouver, the name Tsawwassen coming from a First Nation whose traditional territory stretched from the Gulf Islands to the Fraser River. Giant ferries perform the 95-minute crossing across the Salish Sea around a dozen times per day, often departing on the hour, and each boat can take up to 350 cars ($62 CAD plus fees) and near-endless walk-ons ($18 CAD plus fees), though reservations ($17 CAD) can be hard to score at busy times.

Notably, this ferry superhighway doesn't reach all the way to Victoria proper. BC Ferries dock at Swartz Bay on Vancouver Island, about 20 miles north of the city. BC Transit busses run into the heart of the city (and Tsawwassen has several parking lots to leave a car overnight), but this route is less convenient for carless travel. Don't forget to factor in the U.S.-Canadian border crossing time en route to the Tsawwassen terminal.

Victoria Clipper Passenger Ferry from Seattle

The fastest water route to Victoria departs from Belltown, at Pier 69. Since the 1980s, the Clipper catamarans have run the trip, a little less than three hours, in comfort that bridges a sightseeing trip with straight-up transportation. The passenger-only  Clipper V has two decks, and therefore several class options; the lower deck has airplane-style seating, with the upper deck featuring leather seating, tables, and complimentary snacks. One-way fares start at $99 in winter and go up to $119 in the high summer season, and advance reservations are a must during busy times—but round-trip purchases come with as much as a $39 discount.

Clipper passengers step off the boat onto a Victoria Harbour dock, walking distance to many hotels and a short taxi ride to others. The city's one big out-of-town attraction, Buchart Gardens , sits 13 miles north on Vancouver Island, but both Clipper packages and other operators offer bus rides to the famed flower extravaganza.

Kenmore Air Floatplane from Seattle

Sea travel? In this century? Flights into Victoria shrink travel time significantly, especially given the seaplanes Kenmore Air sends from Lake Union directly to Victoria Harbour. Two or three scheduled flights (starting at $212 one way in summer) take off per day, the ride just 45 minutes and a thrill unto itself. Like the Clipper ferries, the downtown-to-downtown experience makes for an easy, carless vacation; the seaplanes land directly in front of the Fairmont Empress.

Note that while Washington's enhanced driver's license, passport card, or NEXUS card can be good for passage through land and sea borders, a full passport is required for all fliers. Oh, and Alaska Air also flies from Sea-Tac to Victoria's land airport near the Swartz Bay ferry terminal in normal, wheeled planes—but where's the fun in that?

Washington State Ferry from Anacortes

Finally, one last way to Vancouver Island—the Washington State Ferries  system, with its once rare stop in Sidney, BC. The Anacortes-San Juans ferry route used to include a seasonal side detour to this port near Swartz Bay, but service halted due to the pandemic and now will not resume until summer 2023 at the earliest due to staff and boat shortages.

Did you know that the Washington State Ferry System is the largest ferry system in the United States and the third-largest in the world?

If you’re feeling crabby, take the ferry to Victoria and feast on some fresh seafood while enjoying the scenic ride.

There are vessels that operate on the waterways for transportation services and offer an exciting experience for passengers. These aquatic transport alternatives serve a wide array of purposes, including commercial, recreational and emergency rescue missions.

Ferries are unique vessels that operate on waterways, usually over a short distance, to transport people, cargo or vehicles across rivers or other bodies of water. They vary in sizes from small boats to huge ocean liners, offering passengers an unparalleled view of the beauty of nature while traveling between destinations.

The unique feature of ferries is their ability to transport several cars and heavy-duty trucks across the waters effortlessly. Modern ferries also provide different amenities such as shops, restaurants and cafes to their patrons during transportation, which are overlooked by other modes of transportation such as airplanes.

Interestingly, some state-of-the-art ferries are moving towards more sustainable fuels like liquefied natural gas (LNG) resulting in lower carbon emissions and pollution levels.

Washington State Ferries: Drive to Anacortes, Washington, and take the ferry to Sidney, British Columbia. From there, it’s a 30-minute drive to downtown Victoria. This scenic 2-hour ferry ride offers stunning views and the chance to spot wildlife along the way.

BC Ferries: Cross the US-Canada border and drive to Tsawwassen Ferry Terminal near Vancouver, British Columbia. Hop on a BC Ferries sailing to Swartz Bay, just a 30-minute drive from Victoria. If you’ve ever dreamed of flying and sailing at the same time, seaplanes give you the best of both worlds – and a little bit of turbulence to keep you on your toes.

The amphibious planes that are capable of landing and taking off on both land and water surfaces are commonly known as aircraft that can take to the skies after a splash in the water. Used mainly for recreational flying, seaplanes have an edge over other modes of transportation due to their maneuverability in coastal areas and remote islands.

Seaplanes provide more accessible travel as they eliminate the need for runways, making it easier to reach destinations with limited infrastructure. The smooth landing required by seaplanes helps ensure minimal damage to delicate ecosystems such as coral reefs. Additionally, some models have retractable landing gear, allowing pilots to transition between water and land operations quickly.

Offering daily seaplane flights between downtown Seattle’s Lake Union and Victoria’s Inner Harbour, Kenmore Air provides a thrilling and efficient travel option. The 45-minute flight showcases stunning aerial views of the region, making it a memorable part of your adventure.

Pro Tip: Seaplane travel provides a unique opportunity for eco-friendly tourism and exploring hard-to-reach areas with speed and agility.

Driving a car is like playing a video game, except the stakes are higher and you can’t just hit ‘reset’ when you crash.

For a luxurious and speedy trip, book a seat on a Helijet helicopter. Departing from Seattle’s Boeing Field, Helijet transports passengers to Victoria’s Inner Harbour in just 35 minutes. With comfortable seating and unmatched views, this option adds a touch of glamour to your journey.

Cars and Buses

It is interesting to note the multitude of transportation options available today. Many people prefer the convenience and familiarity of Cars and Buses. These two modes of transportation have proved to be incredibly useful in various settings, including commuting to work or school, traveling long distances or carrying large goods.

Cars have become a staple form of transportation, providing relative ease of access and privacy. With the luxury of sitting indoors, many people are sheltered from an exposed experience with harsh weather conditions. Moreover, cars provide more autonomy than public transport as drivers can select their preferred route at any time they wish.

Buses offer a more affordable and eco-friendly alternative to cars, particularly for travel where longer routes are concerned. They often run on cleaner fuels, producing fewer greenhouse emissions and providing less traffic congestion on roads commonly used by commuters. Additionally, buses promote public safety as they reduce fatigue driving on long trips without getting lost or tired.

When deciding between a bus or car for long trips; however, it could be advantageous to factor in the comfort, noise levels, time efficiency and environmental concerns when rationalizing your desired mode of transportation.

The year was 1968 with new changes in legislation allowing women to join the workforce drove up demand for personal automobile ownership significantly . While there were very few owning cars back then, automobiles enabled women access to numerous work opportunities that otherwise would not have been possible before.

Crossing the border is like a game of Russian roulette – you never know if you’ll get stopped or if you’ll make it through unscathed.

Crossing the Border

The US-Canada Border Crossing

When traveling from Seattle to Victoria, crossing the US-Canada border can be a hassle, but careful planning can make it seamless. Ensure that you have all required travel documents, including a valid passport, visa, and entry permits. To avoid long delays, choose to travel during off-peak commute hours. Avoid carrying prohibited items such as cannabis, firearms, and agricultural products without obtaining permission from the authorities.

Furthermore, be prepared for a thorough border inspection, including an interview, document check, and vehicle inspection. Follow the instructions of the border officials, answer their questions truthfully, and remain patient. Any discrepancies or inconsistencies may result in further questioning or even denial of entry.

For added convenience, consider using a trusted traveler program such as NEXUS or Global Entry to expedite the border crossing process. These programs offer a dedicated lane for pre-screened travelers, allowing for quicker processing and reducing wait times.

To ensure a hassle-free experience when crossing the US-Canada border, it’s important to plan ahead and know the rules and regulations. By following these tips and being prepared, you can make your journey from Seattle to Victoria a smooth and enjoyable one.

Don’t forget your passport and visa, unless you want to spend your vacation stuck at the border like a sad, lost puppy.

Passport and Visa Requirements

For international travel, it is imperative to possess all the necessary travel documents. The pre-requisite for crossing borders is having a valid passport and visa , keeping in mind the specific requirements of each country.

When travelling internationally, passport and visa requirements must be adhered to at all times. Passports must have a minimum validity of six months from the date of entry into foreign countries. Visa applications should be submitted well in advance to avoid any last-minute hassle.

It’s important to note that different countries might have unique exceptions and prerequisites for tourists or long-term travellers. To make sure you’re fully prepared, review the most up-to-date information provided by the country’s consulate or embassy before travelling .

To ensure a seamless crossing experience, always follow instructions carefully and arrive early at border crossings . Check with your airline regarding visa and passport policies before departure.

Following these guidelines will assist in ensuring a smooth cross-border experience while also complying with various laws and regulations .

“Crossing the border is like playing Russian roulette, but instead of a bullet, you’re hoping your paperwork is in order when you’re face-to-face with Customs and Border Protection.”

Customs and Border Protection

Protection at the Cross-Border

Numerous nations have Customs and Border Protection agencies to handle immigration issues. They are responsible for guaranteeing that every individual crossing their borders follows all necessary procedures. These agencies keep the country safe from unlawful activities by screening inbound and outbound things.

Customs and Border Protection agencies operate sophisticated technologies like facial identification, biometrics, and other state-of-the-art innovations in border control. Through these technologies, they can perform quick background checks on individuals. However, rigorous physical inspection of travel baggage remains the primary technique.

One essential role of Customs and Border Protection agencies is to keep track of who is crossing the borders and why. They also try to ensure that drugs, restricted goods, weapons, or violent individuals do not enter the country. Customs agents use sniffing dogs to detect illegal substances or explosives hidden in luggage.

Once a woman asked a Santa Claus doll for Christmas from her daughter residing in Canada; however, when she opened her package containing an adorable teddy bear with red fur wrapped in cotton that had an odor – which indicates smuggling activity- in a customs facility initially made her panic but was relieved later after authorities verified there were no irregularities.

Crossing any nation’s border necessitates adherence to strict regulations and guidelines dictated by Customs and Border Protection agencies such as authentic passports coupled with important documents related to one’s travel itinerary. Failure to meet these guidelines could lead to confiscation or imprisonment. Which depicts how crucial it is for individuals traveling across boundaries should comply with these policies so that lawful interaction between two countries prevails democratically.

If you’re traveling on a weekend, make a reservation and get there early.

Since we were taking our car, we needed to factor in the driving time to the ferry dock in Swartz Bay, located about 30 to 45 minutes outside of Victoria.

BC Ferries serves travelers from all around Vancouver Island and the lower mainland of British Columbia. Weekends are typically busy, and popular sailings can sell out.

Traffic is also busier on the weekends , so give yourself plenty of time and arrive at least 30 minutes in advance.

I recommend booking a reservation online to guarantee your spot on a specific sailing. Reservations cost an extra 20 CAD, but I think it's well worth it.

Even if you have a ferry reservation, know that there's a chance your ferry can get canceled or delayed due to weather conditions — forcing you to take the next sailing in one or two hours.

There are gorgeous views throughout the ride, which made up for the lack of Wi-Fi.

One of the things I love about taking the 90-minute boat from Victoria to Vancouver is the incredible scenery and ocean views . If the weather is decent, I recommend sitting outside.

There are picturesque islands covered in lush forests, and you may even spot a pod of whales or dolphins if you're lucky.

But if you plan on catching up on your favorite shows, download content before the ferry departs. There were no Wi-Fi options on board.

Since mobile reception is also spotty, I used the trip to catch up on work using offline apps and take in the scenery.

There’s a restaurant on the ferry, and it's actually decent.

Surprisingly, I don't mind the ferry food, even though it tends to be pretty expensive. If you're not sure what to get, skip the prepackaged salads and get the poutine.

At about 7 to 8 CAD, it's one of the cheapest things on the menu, and it's tasty and filling.

But if you don't want to deal with lines or crowds, you should bring your own meals.

The arrival process is pretty straightforward.

The crew makes an announcement asking passengers to return to their cars 15 minutes before docking. That's when I usually sneak in a last-minute trip to the restroom before heading down to the car deck.

We spent about 10 minutes in the car waiting for the boat to dock before driving off.

We made our way to the Peace Arch Border Crossing.

If possible, avoid driving into Seattle during rush hour.

Traffic jams are also common on what should be a two-and-a-half-hour drive from the border crossing to Seattle, especially as you get closer to the city.

We opted to stay overnight in Seattle.

It's technically possible to go to Seattle for the day via the car ferry, but we wanted more than a few hours in the city before turning around and catching the last ferry home at 10 p.m .

On this trip, we booked a one-night stay at The Edgewater — an iconic Seattle hotel with a storied history of hosting legendary musicians like the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, and Pearl Jam.

Our room cost 329 CAD, and we loved the incredible waterside views, the central location, and the easy car access.

I kind of wish I didn't have my car in Seattle.

Since we stayed in downtown Seattle, we were within walking distance of Pike Place Market , the Nordstrom flagship store, and buzzy dining options in Belltown.

We also spent an afternoon exploring the trendy Capitol Hill neighborhood, located a 10-minute drive from downtown. But we ended up taking an Uber because we knew it'd be easier than finding our own parking on the weekend.

The city has a public transit system that includes a light rail, a monorail, and streetcars, so it's pretty easy to get around without a car.

When I compare the time and money spent, I wish I’d left the car at home.

In addition to the roundtrip ferry fare (with corresponding fees and taxes), my friend and I spent about 82 CAD on gas, bringing our total transport costs for the weekend trip to 323 CAD, not including the hotel stay .

I've taken the Victoria Clipper passenger ferry to Seattle for past trips, and although it's more expensive (344 CAD per adult, roundtrip), I found it to be a much more relaxing experience.

Our car-ferry journey took about five and a half hours, start to finish. But on the passenger ferry, I've boarded the boat at 5 p.m. and made it to my Seattle hotel by 8:15 p.m.

As a single woman who'd rather spend her weekend exploring one of her favorite cities than sitting in traffic, the passenger ferry is my preferred mode of transportation.

With that said, the car ferry has its advantages.

If you're traveling as a family or group, it's considerably cheaper than the passenger ferry. A roundtrip for a family of four on BC Ferries costs around 231 CAD, whereas the same trip on the Victoria Clipper would be around 866 CAD.

Additionally, if you plan on doing a lot of shopping or any outdoor activities outside of Seattle, it usually makes sense to have a car.
