Now, you  could spend a fat chunk of $$$ on the WRONG present for someone. Wrong size hiking boots, wrong fit backpack, wrong shape sleeping bag… As any adventurer will tell you, gear is a personal choice.

So give the adventurer in your life the gift of convenience: buy them an REI Co-op gift card!  REI is The Broke Backpacker’s retailer of choice for ALL things outdoors, and an REI gift card is the perfect present you can buy from them. And then you won’t have to keep the receipt. 😉

The best travel wallet for one person isn’t necessarily the best travel wallet for the next person in the queue. So which is the best travel wallet for you? Here are a few points to take note of when working out which of our top picks might be the best for you.

Most of the travel wallets in our review list are made from water-resistant synthetic materials, which are ideal for anyone worried about getting caught in the rain (or even ruined by a splash of spilt coffee). But we’ve also covered a few travel wallets made in faux or real leather, for that extra look of sophistication!

Do you want your travel wallet to contain RFID-protection ? Firstly, let’s explain exactly what RFID stands for: Radio-Frequency Identification Devices. Basically, the wallets that promise RFID-protection stop electronic pickpockets from stealing your data by scanning the data stored on credit cards, identity cards, and even in passports, which could then be used to spend, spend, spend, or even duplicate your identity. You have been warned!

Frequency of use

If you’re only going to use your travel wallet once or twice a year, you’re probably going to be looking for a travel wallet at the lower end of the price bracket. However, if you’re a regular traveler, you definitely do get what you pay for, so keep this in mind when working out how to choose the best travel wallet for you!

Still have some questions? No problem! We’ve listed and answered the most commonly asked questions below. Here’s what people usually want to know:

What makes a travel wallet so different?

Travel wallets need to be more durable and offer more organisation than normal wallets. In the best case, they’re also made from cut-proof material.

Are there wallets that fit passports?

Yes, the Tuscall Travel Wallet fits all of your cards, money and even your passport. It’s obviously not the size that you can put into your pocket, but to keep all of your valuables together, it’s perfect.

What is the safest travel wallet?

The Lifeventure RFID Multi-pocket Waist Wallet is a great anti-theft wallet. It is fully RFID-protected, meaning data thieves are unable to scan your credit card or ID details.

What is the overall best travel wallet?

Our favorite is the Pacsafe V50 RFID Blocking Bi-Fold Wallet . It offers plenty of compartments which makes organisation a breeze.

We found travel wallets that are great for navigating old cities around the clock, and travel wallets that can handle all sorts of rugged adventures. We curated all our travel wallets with durability and design in mind, but we also considered features that make each wallet unique in and of its own. The one quality you'll find in each travel wallet? They all are sized to hold an American passport nice and snug. After all, it wouldn't be a travel wallet if it didn't hold your most important papers.

Pioneer's Passport Wallet is wonderfully simple in design and tough as nails thanks to its waterproof ripstop fabric construction. In fact, we found the waterproof ripstop fabric is great for handling humid environments, staying dry and and stiff, as opposed to getting all slimy and flimsy as other travel wallets can become in these climates. As far as stroage goes, it comes with a full length cash pocket, pockets to store up to 8 cards, and a 3D molded passport pocket designed to fit an American passport perfectly snug.

Due to this wallet's construction. look, and function, we found it to be our favorite pick when taking to warm weather vacation and cold weather trips. The material is simply just too good, and you never have to worry about any of the contents sliding out. Simply put, the Pioneer Passport Wallet is capable of all kinds of trips and adventures. This is a quality investment we'd recommend over and over again.

Bellroy makes several great travel wallets, but the wallet we found most like the wallet you probably already carry is the bifold Travel Wallet. It's got a fine all leather make and will hold a passport, cash, train tickets, and up to 10 cards. What's cool is the wallet comes with a micro pen that hangs inside the wallet's spine, which we found to be useful when wanting to write down recommendations of places to visit from friends and other travelers.

Looks can be deceiving due to the wallet's traditional bifold design. It measures 3.8-inches tall by 6-inches wide, so it is big. Overall we find it to be a great minimalist travel wallet with a classic style that blends in nicely in all environments.

This reasonably priced wallet from Fjallraven is made with a durable waxed waterproof canvas and a YKK zippered closure to protect all your documents and cards from the elements. Inside are 5 card pockets, 2 cash pockets, and 1 zippered coin pouch. Looking for the passport pocket? That would be behind the coin pouch—it's a nice and discrete design note, we know.

If you're looking for a rugged wallet with waterproofing and protection but don't want to pay over $100, this is a solid option. Fjallraven fans will see this wallet has the same quality construction like the brand's other gear, which is a great sign because the maker is one of the best valued outdoor brands out there.

The design of a good AirTag wallet is still being perfected, but that doesn't mean we don't like what's already on the market. If you're looking for a travel wallet you can store your AirTag in, this one from Lumberjack Plaid is our latest favorite.

It comes in a sleek and stylish leather (3 colors available) and features a passport pocket, a long pocket for tickets and cash, and 3 card slots. You get all this for $40, which is an excellent value for such a quality wallet. Just be aware the leather can show scratches pretty easily; most notably on the dark leather.

Made to fall in line with all your other Tumi luggage, the Passport Case comes in a sleek, all-black look with more interior space than one might think. We're talking a passport pocket, a billfold compartment, an ID window, 2 slip pockets, and 8 card pockets. You get the best of both worlds with this wallet: great style and high functionality. Well done Tumi, well done.

We get it, many of us aren't jet-setting out of the U.S. several times in a year. Nonetheless it's important to have a passport wallet even if you're only getting out of the country once in a blue moon. For overseas trips that are few and far between, this RFID-blocking leather travel passport case for under $30 on Amazon will do the job. It will also give off style points, as the leather has a nice rich look to it that holds up well when used sparingly.

Due to the stitching and overall quality of the materials we'd say this wallet might not be suitable for high levels of use. But because it carries a high durability and functionality for the price, we recommend it as a great travel wallet for those who might need to take a passport with them only once or twice in a year.

If you want to go with a more secure wallet, this thin travel pouch can be strapped around the waist and hold your passport, cash, cards, and more. The pouch itself has RFID tech built-in so you get another level of safety. Plus the pouch is made from water-resistant ripstop, so you won't have to worry about any of your items getting soaked from rain.

One note to point out is even though the price point of this belt is incredibly good, we believe the thin fabric could wear down faster over time than some of the other wallets on this list.

The Apex wallet is made with fine leather that's heat bonded instead of being stitched. The result is a unique design that, when closed, fully encases the inner contents of the wallet from the outside elements. The Apex will hold a passport, cash, and 2-4 cards. And just like the Travel Wallet, you get a small micro pen that can be stored inside on the wallet's spine.

Handcrafted from USA heritage leather, Shinola's Utility Passport Wallet is truly made to age like fine wine. When opening up the wallet, one side contains a passport pocket while the other has 5 faille-lined pockets for your cards. It's not the most feature-loaded travel wallet on this list, and it's certainly not the cheapest, but if you're looking for something simple and timeless then this is the one.

You're not going to find another travel wallet like this one, and that's the point. Texas boot-maker Tecovas went and took the same authentic American alligator leather it uses for its boots and crafted the material into a passport case. The result is a one-of-a-kind piece with a passport pocket and 4 exterior card pockets. What's cool is you can even monogram it.

Of course the price point on this wallet is almost like buying a luxury good, but really the only qualm we have with the wallet is its availability. Sometimes it's popularity gets the best of it, and so you might have to turn to the Ostrich Passport Case or the original Passport Case —two excellent alternatives, no less.

Malbon Golf Yacht Club Passport Holder

Yacht Club Passport Holder

The streetwear-inspired golf brand Malbon Golf has been turning out tons of cool pieces this year. One of its products that has flown under-the-radar is this pebbled leather passport holder. We were surprised to open it up and see tons of card space to go with the passport pocket. And as far as style goes, it comes with cool embossments on the front and inner pocket and is available in three colors.

Tanner Goods Leather Passport Travel Wallet

Leather Passport Travel Wallet

If you liked the full leather of the Shinola travel wallet but wished it had a different interior configuration, then this travel wallet from Tanner Goods is a great alternative. Inside is a passport pocket with a small card pocket on top of the passport flap, plus two additional card slots on the other side.

The wallet might not hold a lot, but if you want a minimalist leather wallet with great style and a thin silhouette, then you'll be happy with this choice.

Zero Grid Travel Wallet Passport Holder

Travel Wallet Passport Holder

Similar to the belted travel wallet we featured earlier, this passport holder can be used as a sling bag and is made with waterproof ripstop and covered with RFID blocking material. What's cool is it zips shut, closing in the passport and up to 10 cards that can fit on the inside. You also get a small stylus that you can hang on the wallet's spine.

Buying a quality travel wallet is going to look a lot like buying your everyday wallet, but the two are not the same. Here's what you need to know.

  • Durability: Making sure your travel wallet is tough and made of good materials is of utmost importance. After all, this is your last line of defense to your passport—the most important document you need when traveling overseas. This prior notion is why we loved reviewing travel wallets made from tear-resistant and water-resistant materials (like the Pioneer Travel Wallet). Premium leather is also a good material to protect your passport, as the leather provides a thick layer to keep moisture and dust from getting to your papers.
  • Security Features: Some travel wallets comes with RFID (radio-frequency identification) lining to help prevent RFID theft. It's true this type of crime doesn't happen a lot, but it is possible, and so buying a travel wallet with RFID lining does add a level of security to your essentials. Another security feature to look for are zippered or snap closures that help keep your passport and cards sealed off. We like these closures because it helps limit the chances of any items accidentally falling out when traveling—which happens more than one might think.
  • AirTag Tracking: Although we only have one AirTag travel wallet we like right now, we anticipate more of these types of wallets to hit the market in the coming year. AirTag wallets have become a huge hit thanks to their tracking abilities, and so any travel wallet that can incorporate an AirTag in a slimming and discrete way should be considered on your shortlist of what travel wallets to buy.

Can You Use a Passport Covers as A Wallet?

commerce breaker

Travel wallets, also sometimes referred to as passport wallets, are the best possible choice for carrying your passport and your cash and cards. Travel wallets are not to be confused with passport covers, which are simply covers you can slide over your passport to add a level of protection.

Passport covers do theoretically have space where you could slide some cash plus 1-2 cards inside, but those spaces oftentimes make your valuables prone to falling out. A passport cover is not designed to hold anything more than a passport, and so whatever else you put in there is going to be like trying to fit a square peg into a round hole. Stick to a travel wallets for cash, card, and passport carry.

Why Trust Us

In order to keep up with new new designs and releases, the MH tech and gear team is continually testing all of the latest everyday carry accessories to make sure our recommendations reflect the top products within each space.

When it comes to travel wallets, we acquire and call in the latest releases to test, and then we take them out into the real world. At any given point, writers and editors in our office are traveling, and so we plan accordingly whenever we are going to be up in the air to take one or two travel wallets with us to see how they perform. Lastly, we take a hands-on look at the travel wallets up close. We inspect everything from the material to the build of the wallet to determine it's durability and whether or not the price point reflects the overall quality.

How We Selected

Our MH commerce team thoroughly researched and tested dozens of the best travel wallets, from budget to designer to premium, gift-worthy models. We noted everything from how snug the wallet fit an American passport to how the interior card slots were organized. We also considered fabric quality (especially when it came to leather) and price. The list above represents our honest picks for the best travel wallets of 2023.

We looked for travel wallets with room for all the essentials and stylish designs, as well as those that reduce the risk of identity fraud

Our Top Picks

Ted Baker safar art print travel wallet

First things first – yes, this wallet is larger than most, but it’s surprisingly slim, and every millimetre of space has been put to good use. In other words, it’s large enough to hold all the essentials for a trip abroad – passports, paperwork, medical certificates and currency – but compact enough to prevent it being cumbersome.

Lifeventure RFID mini travel wallet

This wallet has seven card pockets, including one covered by transparent plastic. Our advice? Use this one to stash ID cards, such as a driver’s licence – you can flash it without having to remove it from the wallet.

Fjällräven kånken travel wallet

How Fjällräven managed to squeeze so many pockets into such a compact wallet, we’ll never know. We had plenty of room for our passport, vaccination documentation and foreign currency, which we placed inside the wallet, while we kept our boarding passes in the extra-wide exterior pocket on the wallet’s rear.

Keela travel ID wallet.jpg

To begin with, we were sceptical about the simplicity of this wallet but we’re now total converts. In recent years, partly because of the extra documentation required for travel (whether it’s vaccination paperwork or visa forms, much of which isn’t required to check in for a flight) we’ve taken to carrying our passport in a separate wallet, simply so we can produce it without riffling through irrelevant paperwork. Our top tip? Before entering the airport, place your boarding pass and passport in this transparent wallet (which slips neatly under jackets or T-shirts) and simply whip them out as and when required.

Jack Wolfskin cashbag wallet

We love the name of this RFID wallet – if only because it brings to mind an accessory stuffed with thick wads of cash. That wasn’t the case where we were concerned, to be clear, although we did find the extra-wide pocket useful for quickly stashing a wad of 1,000 Indian Rupees (don’t get excited – this equates to just £9.89).

Katie Loxton travel wallet

This is definitely one of the simpler travel wallets, but it’s perfect for the essentials – we used it for our passport and boarding passes, which were kept secure courtesy of the press-stud fastening. Subtle gold accents – namely the press stud and the lettering spelling out ‘Yay for vacay’ – earns extra points in the style stakes, and there are options to have the wallet personalised, too. We were seriously impressed to find that it was made from PU (polyurethane), given its leather-like feel.

Go Travel RFID organiser

Identity theft is no longer an invisible threat that brands merely use to convince us to part with extra cash. Well, some brands might still take this approach, but Go Travel, which is known for its top-quality RFID travel wallets, definitely isn’t one of them, and this wallet is a case in point. Despite its slimline design, it’s stuffed with pockets, to hold everything from passports (our rigorous testing proved that there was more than enough room for four) to boarding passes, which we placed in the extra-wide pockets beneath the ones designed to hold passports. Unlike with similar products, the RFID tech has added minimal bulk, and its clamshell design, with zips that opened on three sides of each half of the wallet, meant refreshingly easy access to the contents.

House of Disaster animal-print travel wallet.jpg

We were instantly smitten with the flash of pink (courtesy of the strap) against the monochrome animal print, but the interior of this wallet was just as impressive. A zippered pocket was perfect for stashing loose change, while we used the shallow card pockets for hotel room keys and business cards. The highlight, however, was the main compartment, with its four dividers, clearly labelled (in chic gold font, nonetheless) to indicate separate pockets for passports, tickets, documents and ‘other’. Full disclosure, we were initially concerned by its larger size, but a trip to India, which involved multiple internal flights (read: lots of tickets), visas and vaccination documentation meant we easily filled this particular wallet.

In recent years, the paperwork required to jet from one country to another has increased dramatically, whether it’s paperwork relating to tests and vaccinations or additional visas.

Luckily, some of our favourite travel accessory brands have risen to the challenge, producing fantastic travel wallets that not only have room for all the essentials, but look incredibly stylish and reduce the risk of identity fraud, too.

We strongly recommend opting for RFID (radio-frequency identification) wallets, which use nickel and copper-coated material (usually polyester) to reduce the risk of identity fraud, by blocking the electromagnetic signals emitted from your bank cards.

Take the time to think about what you’re going to be using your wallet for – if you’re going to fill it to capacity, we’d recommend opting for a zip closure, but if easy access is a priority, don’t write off the humble magnet or press-stud closure.

We’re also huge fans of wallets that have clamshell openings – ones that open fully, like a book, rather than requiring you to extract your essentials through tiny openings.

How we tested.

Our recent trips involved a lot of paperwork (including visas, proof of negative Covid tests and currency in various denominations) as well as essentials such as our passport (obviously), boarding passes and bank cards. We had plenty of opportunities to put these wallets to the test during these trips, whether it was before we’d even entered the airport (in India, a recent destination, all passengers must produce airplane tickets before being allowed into the terminal) or at visa checkpoints. In a nutshell? We truly put these wallets through their paces, and they all passed with flying colours. That said, certain ones have been clearly designed with specific additional purposes in mind, which is why we’ve highlighted the areas in which they excel below. Happy travels!

Ted Baker safar art print travel wallet

  • Best: Overall
  • Material : Shell: 100 per cent polyurethane; lining: 100 per cent cotton

It’s also one of the most stylish travel wallets we’ve come across, thanks to the abstract floral design featured on its hard-wearing (but surprisingly leather-like) polyurethane exterior.

An internal, removeable card holder, a wide zippered purse and plentiful pockets meant there was more than enough room for our various travel accoutrements, and we were impressed by the ultra-strong magnetic closure.

Lifeventure RFID mini travel wallet

  • Best: For bells and whistles
  • Material : Nickel- and copper-coated polyester

Larger slip pockets – placed beneath the smaller ones – are ideal for boarding passes and passports, and we used the pocket made from mesh to stash our iPhone. It’s another RFID wallet, which relies on nickel- and copper-coated polyester fabric to reduce the risk of identity theft.

Call us fickle but we loved the choice of four colourways, too (we recommend the merlot-red “plum” hue).

Fjällräven kånken travel wallet

  • Best: For easy access
  • Material : 65 per cent polyester, 35 per cent cotton

There’s an incredible sense of toughness to the kånken (thanks, partly, to the water-resistant G-1000 fabric), and we loved how the concertina-like strip of material between the wallet’s two halves meant we could open the wallet fully – no fumbling around through narrow openings to extricate essential documents.

Keela travel ID wallet

  • Best: For simplicity
  • Material : Unspecified

Jack Wolfskin cashbag wallet

  • Best: Compact travel wallet
  • Material : Shell: 100 per cent polyamide; lining: 100 per cent polyester

It’s one of the smallest travel wallets in our selection, but that’s precisely why we love it – although it might not be large enough for your passport, it’s got more than enough room for currency, boarding passes and paperwork, and its size means it slips easily into the smallest of pockets.

Katie Loxton travel wallet

  • Best: For style
  • Material : Polyurethane

Go Travel RFID organiser

  • Best: RFID wallet
  • Material : Polyester

House of Disaster animal-print travel wallet

  • Best: Large travel wallet
  • Material : Vegan-friendly ‘leather’, faux dalmation fur, cotton lining

The verdict: Travel wallets

We’ll be honest – we’d book a holiday just for the opportunity to show off Ted Baker’s safar art print travel wallet , which is an absolute essential for stylish jet-setters who like to keep all their travel essentials in one place. Fjällräven’s kånken travel wallet is a sturdy, stylish piece of kit that stands up to serious amounts of wear and tear, while Lifeventure’s RFID travel wallet is a great example of a product that proves opting for extra security doesn’t require going down the supersized route.

Preparing for your next trip, staycation or holiday just got a whole lot easier with these packing cubes that will keep your suitcase organised

Ireland Packing List: 17 Essentials You Actually Need for 2023

Ireland Packing List Featured

Even if you have no Irish ancestry, Ireland is a destination that calls out to many people. Blessed with beautiful countryside, compelling history and folklore, and a good presence in pop culture, Ireland is probably among the most well-known countries for American travelers.

Having visited many times myself, I can unequivocally state that Ireland lives up to the hype. I’ll never forget the rolling green fields or the sheep wandering down narrow two-lane roads.

The fish and chips I had along the Wild Atlantic Way were so exquisitely good, they tasted like the first fish and chips I ever ate. Even a monsoon-like downpour that limited visibility and soaked me through couldn’t dampen my spirits about Ireland.

If you’re planning a trip to Ireland, you might be curious about what to pack for Ireland. You may plan the most wonderful vacation, but it’s not going to be as enjoyable if you don’t have the right items. I’m here to help with your Ireland packing list, but first…

This post was first written in 2018 and last updated in January 2023.

Table of Contents

Tips for Packing for Ireland

What’s the weather like in ireland.

travel ireland without a car

Ireland has four distinct seasons, which is both a blessing and a curse. It’s a blessing because you can pack exactly what you need given the season you’re visiting; it’s a curse because you have to try and figure out which season you’ll be in and risk bringing the wrong items if the weather doesn’t cooperate.

Here’s a quick breakdown of the weather each season so you’ll know what to bring to Ireland:

  • Spring in Ireland is from March through May. Average temperatures in this season range from lows around 39°F (4°C) in March to highs around 59°F (15°C) in May. This is a pretty big swing, so it’s best to assume that March weather is a bit more winter-like (thus you pack more winter items) and May is a bit more summer-like (thus pack summer items). Visiting Ireland in April ? Good luck!
  • Summer in Ireland is from June to September . The weather is typically sunny, and average temperatures range from 63-69°F (17-19°C). By the end of September, temperatures are starting to drop, so don’t assume it will be as warm on September 30th as it was on September 1st.
  • Autumn in Ireland is from late September to November. Temperatures start to drop, from the 60s°F (15°C) to the 40s°F (10°C). You can also expect the weather to turn a bit damper, though to be honest, Ireland gets rain year-round in certain parts of the country.
  • Winter in Ireland is from December to February.  Get ready for temperatures in the 30s-40s°F (10°C and colder) on average, and some of the rainier months of the year. Some parts of the country will even see snow! ❄️ Pack layers to stay warm and rain gear to stay dry during these months!

With this in mind, let’s dive into the travel essentials for Ireland that you need.

What You Actually Need on Your Ireland Packing List

I’ll be honest: I pretty much pack 90% of the same things over and over… and I bet you do too.

Most packing lists are about 90% of those same things, right? So instead of giving you an Ireland packing list that’s 90% of what you already know or are already planning to pack ( yes, you do need one pair of underwear for each day… ) , here’s a packing list that’s 100% of things you need specifically for making a packing list for Ireland.

In addition to the list of things to bring to Ireland, you might add other things based on the activities you plan to enjoy. For example, if you’re doing a lot of hiking, you might want to swap out the waterproof hiking boots I recommend for a heartier pair you’ve already broken in. If you plan to take a tip in the Atlantic Ocean, you’ll need a swimsuit (and a brave soul!).

No matter what, though, these items won’t take up unnecessary space in your bag. Here are my specific recommendations on how to pack for Ireland.

1. The  Lonely Planet  Ireland Travel Guide

Ireland LP Guide

I love the feeling of a guidebook in my hands, ready to be opened for the first time to start helping me plan my trip.  Whether you need restaurant recommendations or pro tips on scenic viewpoints, the  Lonely Planet guide to Ireland is a worthwhile investment when wondering what to bring when traveling to Ireland. You can read it on the plane over too!

Other good options for helpful guidebooks include Fodor’s Essential Ireland as well as my favorite travel guide Rick Steves Ireland. You can put sticky notes on all the pages of interest as you read through it and go back to create your finalized itinerary later.

Make sure to book your car rental in advance! I love using Discover Cars when I travel.

2. Wind-Proof Umbrella

Wind proof Umbrella

Did you know that in some parts of Ireland, it rains up to 255 days per year?! It depends on the time of year you visit, but that means, on average, you can expect rain two days out of every three you’re in Ireland, especially when you visit Ireland in November and later into the winter season.

I don’t typically travel with an umbrella, but I was so glad to have one when I was in Dublin in the winter . It’s nice not to be dripping wet when stepping into a pub after an afternoon of exploring!

To combat this, invest in a good umbrella that can withstand the weather and won’t break the first second you step out to admire the view on the Wild Atlantic Way. They come in a variety of different colors if you want your umbrella to stand out from the others. It’s one of the must haves for Ireland travel so you don’t get soaked, especially if you’re visiting Ireland without a car .

3. Raincoat

Black Rainshell

Similarly, you’re more than likely going to need a solid raincoat while traveling in Ireland. A good rain shell keeps out rain, dries quickly, and packs up small… because we don’t check luggage around these parts! The key is to get one that’s waterproof so you don’t end up getting your clothes underneath soaked.

This one also comes in a delightful Irish green if you want to be totally on-brand with the Emerald Isle when considering what to take to Ireland.

4. Green Blanket Scarf

Green Scarf

You already know I love scarves while traveling, and a scarf is essential for what to bring on a trip to Ireland. This Irish scarf is perfect for travel in Ireland for several reasons:

  • It’s a blanket scarf you can wrap up to stay warm.
  • It has green.
  • It also has orange and white, giving it a distinctly Irish vibe.

With black as the base color, you can get away with wearing this every day of your trip, and it’ll look great. There are a variety of colors you can choose from if you want something a little different.

5. Waterproof Boots

Waterproof Boots

I cannot rave enough about these boots from Teva . I bought a pair a few years back, and they have held up so well . They are water-resistant, have great traction, and are comfortable, making them perfect for any adventure. They also have stylish boots to wear out at night or tall boots to wear on colder days.

They can handle whatever you throw at them, from plodding through soggy clover fields to hiking along the Cliffs of Moher or on the Giant’s Causeway. (Note: Teva has redesigned these boots, so they may look different when you click through.) They’re essential for visiting Ireland for 7 days .

6. Moisture-Wicking Socks

Dickies Socks

Wet socks suck, and so do sweaty socks. I always bring multiple pairs of Merino wool socks everywhere I go so I have warm, dry feet, whether I’m hiking around Dublin or just exploring the city on a rainy day.

These moisture-wicking socks will help keep your feet warm even if you step in a deep puddle or get a bit of rainwater inside your boots. I also love recommending socks because they’re my #1 most forgotten-at-home item!

7. Sunglasses

ireland packing list sunglasses

I know it seems weird to recommend sunglasses right after all that rain gear, but you’ll thank me. When you get to the Atlantic coast, and the sun comes out for two minutes and blinds you with its glare, you’ll be glad you included this in your summer packing for Ireland. Sunglasses also take up zero room in your bag.

If you tend to lose sunglasses on trips, you can always stock up on a few cheaper pairs so you won’t be upset if you break them or forget them somewhere.

8. Universal Adapter

Universal Adapter

Unless you live in the U.K., you will need an adapter to plug in your electronics. You’ll especially want this if you have a big day of photographing landmarks in Ireland and will need a fully charged camera.

I’m a huge sucker for multi-use anything, and this universal adapter is perfect. It has USB ports and receives any kind of plug – plus, it has the necessary “Type G” prongs for Ireland. You can also buy one with multiple ports so you can charge all your gadgets at the same time.

If you’re confused about voltage converters vs. travel adapters, read all about voltage in Ireland .

9. Phone Transmitter

travel wallets ireland

If you’re a good reader taking all of my advice and planning to travel by taking a 10-day Ireland road trip , this will be your saving grace. This adapter plugs into the car, connects via Bluetooth and allows you to crank up your favorite Spotify playlist anywhere (may I suggest this Ireland Roadtrip playlist ?). It also has a USB charger!

10. Irish Wool Sweater

travel wallets ireland

Okay, so this one isn’t one of the things to pack for Ireland that’s absolutely necessary, but I would recommend leaving space in your bag for it if you don’t bring a sweater.

Irish wool sweaters are known the world over for their warmth and comfort. You can buy one when out traveling, or check out The Irish Store for a bigger selection!

These sweaters are also perfect if you’re looking for Irish gift ideas to get others.

What to Pack for Ireland: On the Plane

Now that we’ve talked about what to pack for Ireland when you’re there, let’s talk about a few Ireland travel essentials for the plane ride.

11. Travel Backpack

travel backpack

I started traveling with a travel backpack years ago and haven’t looked back. If you’ve ever had a trip where you got to the plane with your backpack, only to have everything in a jumbled mess when you open it, you won’t have to worry about that with this pack.

There are numerous compartments to organize absolutely everything, from your laptop to books to snacks to travel documents. You’ll love putting this on your Ireland packing list so you’re ready to hit the road as soon as you land.

12. Noise-Cancelling Headphones

noise cancelling headphones

Chances are you’ll have a long flight to get here, so you’ll want to ensure you’re comfortable.

I’ve used these noise-canceling headphones for years, whether I’m waiting in the airport or working at a coffee shop on my travels. They’re so comfortable, block out a good portion of noise, and fold up to save space.

13. Portable Phone Charger

portable power bank

You will be taking so many quick photos and videos with your phone, as well as using it for directions. That means it’ll die quickly, which is the worst when you’re traveling. You’ll want to make sure your phone is fully charged and ready to go as soon as you get off the plane.

I learned the hard way that not every airline has a charger in its seat, so be prepared with this portable phone charger . I’ve been using this one for years and love it. Just recharge it when you get to your hotel for the night so you’re ready for the next day.

14. Travel Wallet

travel wallet

This travel wallet is one of the top items my readers buy because it’s so cute plus handy. It comes in over 40 different colors (I have rose gold) and has organized slots for your ID, credit cards, and cash.

You can also put your passport and a pen in it for when you have to fill out forms at customs, so this is a must for your Ireland packing list to ensure you’re prepared as soon as you land. I’ve used this for years and never looked back.

Optional Items to Consider Packing for Ireland

I’ve put together a weekend packing list to help you see some of the basics I pack for every trip. However, here are a few suggestions for what to pack for a trip to Ireland.

I tend to wear my tennis shoes during the day to explore, but sometimes these get dirty or just don’t fit the fancier restaurant I want to go to later. My travel backpack is often with me during the day, so I love having a pair of flats in it that I can quickly throw on to dress up my outfit.

It’s also comfortable to let my feet relax after a day of adventures. I love Rothy’s for both travel and every day because they’re stylish, plus they’re machine washable.

16. Winter Coat

winter coat

While I listed a raincoat as something to bring anytime you visit Ireland, a winter coat is a must when exploring Dublin during Christmastime or anytime during that general season. It can get really chilly during this time of year, particularly when you’re on the coast and the wind is biting.

If you think you’ll wear it often, I recommend investing in a brand like Columbia . I’ve had their jackets for years, whether I’m hiking or traveling, and they always keep me warm.

17. Packing Cubes

packing cubes

I used to think packing cubes were a waste of money, but I got them at my wedding as a gift and decided to use them for our European honeymoon (which ended in Ireland, in fact!). When you’re bringing a lot of clothes for a longer trip, these are crucial for helping you organize everything.

Sometimes I travel and only stay in one city for a night or two before moving on to the next, so these allow me to keep some items like socks and underwear in the smaller cubes without having them get lost in the sea of other clothes. I consider these essentials for traveling to Ireland if you like being organized like I do!

Additionally, here are a couple of tips to help you know what to pack for a trip to Ireland:

  • What you pack for Ireland will vary a lot based on the season you visit. Ireland’s summer months are noticeably drier and warmer than the winter months. As such, you may find you don’t need to pack as many long trousers or waterproof items. Be sure to check the forecast before you start packing for Ireland – and throw in a rain shell anyway because it never hurts to have one!
  • Don’t want to pack a guidebook? Snag a digital copy. Lonely Planet offers ebook versions of all their guidebooks, usually at the same price or cheaper. Here’s the link for the Ireland ebook .
  • Adjust your Ireland packing list based on how long you’re traveling.  Whether you’re only spending one day in Dublin to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day or making a Northern Ireland road trip to accomplish your Ireland bucket list , add one more top for every two days of travel, and one more pair of trousers for every 3 days. Don’t forget extra undergarments and socks!
  • Pack for travel in Europe. Dublin and other Irish cities have a base level of fashion that’s slightly less casual than in the U.S. You can’t go wrong with black pieces and classic items from your wardrobe.
  • Visiting Ireland for St. Patrick’s Day? I have a special packing list for St. Patrick’s Day !

We are just starting to plan a trip to Ireland in June, and I stumbled across your website. I am very impressed with it, and plan to use it as an important resource . Thank you for all the information! For the backpacks, would you recommend the larger or smaller on?

I like smaller ones for day bags personally.

Not to be dramatic, but losing a passport or other travel documents can be a huge nightmare while traveling. To safeguard passports, credit cards, and boarding passes, we recommend using a passport wallet to keep everything organized in one spot.

We researched and tested 16 passport wallets in various sizes and materials to recommend options that fit the needs of all types of travelers. We paid close attention to traits like capacity, durability, functionality, and organizational features to ensure smooth travels. Keep reading to find out which ones surpassed our expectations during testing.

Best Overall

Paravel cabana passport case.

  • Capacity 5 /5
  • Ease of Use 5 /5
  • Quality 5 /5

It has a functional and stylish design to get the best of both worlds for traveling.

We wish it had a zippered pocket.

Parevel’s Cabana Passport Case offers a variety of organizational features to protect not only your passport, but other important travel documents and cash, too. While the case itself looks like a regular passport cover, the button clasp opens up to reveal a wallet with pockets and slots for a passport, credit cards, and cash. We wish there was one zippered pocket for coins, but it’s not a deal breaker by any means since we love the slim design of the wallet (even with a passport inside).

The interior is lined with a soft recycled vegan leather material and the outer material is the brand’s EcoCraft canvas, which is made of post-consumer plastic bottles. The contrast of the canvas and leather complement one another perfectly in any of the four color options available, making it one of the most chic and stylish cases we tested.

Bellroy RFID Travel Wallet

The wallet easily fits in a back pocket.

The wallet will be bigger if it’s packed full and may not fit then.

Minimalist travelers will appreciate the sleek and simple design of Bellroy’s RFID Travel Wallet. We dubbed it our favorite slim option since it can fit virtually anywhere, including in a back pocket (just be sure to take it out of your pocket before going through security). Made out of a soft and durable leather, it never scuffed or scratched while traveling and it looks premium on the outside. The wallet has pockets for a passport, cash, credit cards, and plane tickets, and we love that there aren’t so many pockets that items get disorganized or lost in the void. The best part is that it opens like a standard wallet so we could quickly grab our passports and credit cards while traveling.

Best for Families

Valante premium family travel document organizer capacious rfid passport holder wallet.

  • Ease of Use 4.5 /5

It has pockets for multiple passports, plane tickets, and cash.

The large capacity might be too big for solo travelers.

Family travel can be hectic, so we recommend this spacious wallet that can keep all of your family’s important documents in one safe spot. Designed to store multiple passports, credit cards, plane tickets, and more, there are tons of pockets to place items neatly. There’s even a key leash, two zippered pockets, a pen holder, and two designated slip pockets for boarding passes in the front of the wallet. Because the wallet is on the larger side, we love that it comes with a wrist strap to hold onto it while going through customs or the TSA security line. The size might be too large for solo or minimalist travelers, but it works perfectly for staying organized while traveling in groups.

Price at time of publish: $24

Best Faux Leather

Melsbrinna waterproof rfid-blocking travel wallet.

The PU leather material feels just as soft and durable as regular leather.

The clear plastic window pockets could scratch over time.

Similar to our overall pick, this passport wallet isn’t made out of genuine leather, but it has the same premium look and feel. Made with layers of PU leather, there is a piece of RFID-blocking fabric sandwiched between the material for extra protection while traveling with chipped documents. This sleek wallet comes with all of the standard pockets for a passport, credit cards, and boarding passes, but there were several other features that made it stand out in testing. We are big fans of the two SIM card slots and two plastic window pockets for extra organization for international travelers. Our only concern is that the plastic might scratch or wear over time, but it depends on how often you use the wallet and care for it.

Price at time of publish: $14

Best Color Options

Lucrin geneva passport travel wallet.

The sleek and spacious wallet comes in over 21 colors and five leather texture options.

The premium materials come with a higher price.

One of our favorite leather passport wallets we tested, this one from Lucrin impressed us with a variety of color and texture options to please any and all travelers. There are over two dozen color options available and five different leather textures to choose from, including smooth, granulated, square granulated, vegetable tanned, and crocodile patterned. Once you narrow down your desired color and texture, we’re confident travelers will love the luxurious feel of the premium leather and generous capacity of the snap-closure wallet. It features several slip pockets, thirteen credit card slots, and a large zippered pocket for storing smaller items like coins or a pen. While the price is on the higher end, we believe you get what you pay for with this made-to-last passport wallet.

Price at time of publish: $239

Best Crossbody

Pacsafe rfidsafe v150 rfid-blocking compact organizer.

It comes with a removable strap to keep the wallet attached to your body.

The strap isn’t adjustable.

A lost passport can put a huge damper on a trip, so we recommend the Pacsafe RFID-blocking wallet with a removable crossbody strap for keeping your travel documents attached at the hip (literally). You can wear the strap across your body, on your wrist, or through a belt to ensure the wallet is securely fastened on the go. Besides the ability to wear the wallet as a purse, we love all of the slip and zippered interior pockets for a passport, credit cards, cash, or coins, which will keep you plenty organized. The nylon material is water-resistant with a thick and durable feel, so we expect this wallet will stand the test of time.

Price at time of publish: $60

Best Budget

Tigari passport and vaccine card holder combo.

The high-quality materials and functionality of this wallet are unbeatable for the low price.

It feels a bit big to carry around.

If you’re trying to build a luggage capsule for traveling, this budget-friendly passport wallet makes a useful addition for all types of travelers. Although the wallet comes at a lower price, it doesn’t lack durability and quality of materials. The PU faux leather case comes in a variety of neutral and bright colors, and it has sleek embossed wording on the front. The case opens up to reveal tons of organizational features for one passport, four credit cards, two SIM cards, and a slip pocket for cash. All of the pockets make it easy to grab travel documents quickly and the larger case keeps everything safe from damage during transit. The wallet is on the bigger side, so it might not fit in smaller purses, but it should fit in a backpack or personal item without any issues.

Best Organization

Baphity genuine leather passport holder.

There are a variety of slip and zippered pockets available.

The card slots can be tight at first.

This genuine leather passport wallet is the best option for travelers prioritizing organization. Designed to store a passport, vaccine card, cash coins, boarding passes, and SIM cards, the wallet is bursting with pockets to efficiently organize items. After we filled it with travel documents, we were impressed with how slim and compact the wallet remained. The leather material is high-quality and durable, and we think the wallet has an excellent value for the construction and price-point. We ran into slight issues with the card slots being a bit tight at first, but the material loosened up with more use, which made it easier to pull the cards in and out quickly.

Price at time of publish: $18

Best AirTag-compatible

Normest airtag travel wallet.

  • Capacity 4.5 /5

The wallet has a designated pocket for storing an Apple AirTag for tracking and locating.

  It has a smaller capacity.

Tracking devices can be a game-changer if your luggage gets lost, so we recommend this AirTag-compatible wallet. While the AirTag is sold separately, the wallet does come with a secure slot on the outside to discreetly store the tracking device. The genuine leather material is sleek and soft, and the wallet has a slim design that makes it easy to place it in a back pocket or small bag. It can fit a passport, three credit cards, and some cash before running out of room, so if you’re looking for a spacious wallet, this isn’t the best option. However, sometimes it’s better to be safe than sorry, so this is a great option for AirTag enthusiasts.

Price at time of publish: $140

Best Zip-around

Leatherology zip around travel rfid wallet.

The exterior zipper adds an extra layer of security to keep passports and credit cards safe while traveling.

It might be too large to fit in a smaller purse or sling bag.

Technically, this wallet is for traveling, but we love its sleek and versatile design that works for various uses. While most passport wallets we tested have a snap-closure, this one has a zipper that wraps around the entirety of the wallet to ensure passports, credit cards, cash, and coins remain safely tucked away in transit. The wallet is also very spacious and can easily hold multiple passports, up to eight credit cards, cash, and coins without feeling bulky or cumbersome to carry. There’s even an exterior pocket for storing boarding passes so you don’t have to worry about opening up the wallet. It might be too big to fit in small purses, but the sleek leather look and larger size makes it possible to carry it as a clutch or place into a backpack or tote bag, if needed.

Other Passport Wallets We Liked

There were several passport wallets that almost made our list of winners, but we ran into some slight issues during testing.

Royce Vaccine Card and Passport Wallet : The wallet has a simple and functional design, but the price is fairly high for the smaller capacity and lack of extra organizational features.

Walnew AirTag Passport Holder : It has plenty of room to fit all necessary travel documents and it comes with an AirTag leash, but we liked that the other tracking device-compatible wallet we tried holds the tracker more discreetly.

We researched and selected 16 passport wallets to test out while traveling and in everyday scenarios. From busy TSA security lines to shopping and sightseeing, we made sure the best wallets make it easy to pull out passports, credit cards, IDs, and cash when you’re in a hurry. We paid close attention to the capacity and noted how efficient the organizational features are for storing essential travel documents. Since travel can take a toll on luggage and accessories, we judged the overall quality of the materials and stitchwork to gauge the longevity of each wallet.

Tips for Buying a Passport Wallet

Check the dimensions of the wallet.

Passports from around the world feature the same design and size, but you’ll still want to make sure a passport wallet fits your size needs. Some wallets are designed to just be slightly larger than a passport and others will be large enough to fit the length of a boarding pass. It depends on the space you’ll have in a bag, pocket, or backpack, so you’ll want to consider how to store the wallet while traveling before making the purchase.

Decide how many compartments you need

Passport wallets are typically designed to hold a passport and a few credit cards, but some are equipped with more organizational features. The bigger the wallet, the more room and storage options there will be for multiple passports, credit cards, cash, and boarding passes. Extra features to look for include interior zippered pockets for coins, SIM card holders, and plastic window sleeves for IDs or vaccine cards.

Look for additional security features

Sometimes it’s better to be safe than sorry, so you may want to consider getting a passport wallet with an AirTag holder (AirTags are usually sold separately) to track the wallet in case it goes missing. Other security measures can include a wrap-around zipper to ensure passports and credit cards are secure and layers of RFID-blocking fabric to prevent cyber pick-pocketing.

Security and customs lines can be stressful, so it’s important to have your passport and other necessary documents out of any wallets or cases and ready to go. This will save time and make it easier to hand the documents over to an agent to speed up the process and eliminate unnecessary stress while traveling.

Radio frequency identification or RFID is technology commonly used in credit cards and passports to locate information and data quickly. It is possible to steal data from RFID documents, but there are some passport wallets with a fabric layer to block radio waves from transmitting. Although it’s uncommon for data to be stolen via RFID, the layer of fabric offers extra security and is designed to prevent criminals from taking information while traveling.

The Best Passport / Travel Wallets

Travel wallets have quickly become a must when traveling long distances. Wherever you’re going on holiday or away for business it really helps to keep all your important documents, cash and cards together in a way where you can easily access everything in an easy and systematic way.

Before we continue let’s quickly discuss what a passport or travel wallet actually is and the pros and cons of getting one. The first thing we should talk about is their size. Passport wallets are not small. They actually are one of the largest wallets available on the market today down to the simple fact is they must accommodate room for a passport. The standard size of a passport is 125 mm × 88 mm so it’s crazy to assume they’d have to be quite large.

Passport wallets also need to have added security. I’ve used passport wallets in the past which were not good quality. This caused the wallet to slowly deteriorate very quickly while abroad and I actually found myself having to buy a new one. When this did happen I also lost my passport in the process as the wallet felt to bits. This ties into the second must-have. The quality of the wallet. As mentioned if the wallet is not of sufficient quality then there’s a chance it could fall to bits and you could easily end up losing important documents in the process.

My Holiday in America

In September of 2019 I dedicated to bite the bullet and book a cross country trip from Los Angeles to New York. Traveling by van we stopped in many amazing places including Los Vegas, Zion National Park and The Grand Canyon.

As much as this was a holiday I took this as an opportunity to try out my travel/passport wallets along the way as this epic journey would take me at least 2 months to complete. While I was on my travels I ended up trying more than 30 passport wallets – some good and some not so good. With this information I narrowed it down to the top 5 and this is how I formed this list. So without further ado, let’s take a look at the best Passport wallets for 2020 and beyond.

travel wallets ireland

Fjällräven Passport Wallet

I think we’ve all been introduced to the Fjällräven brand at some point with the success of their famous backpack. But I was more intrigued by their passport wallet that ticked all the criteria for me in a good travel wallet. The full zip around travel wallet is compact in size and has many of the features you’d come to expect from a wallet like this.

Practical and durable travel wallet in durable G-1000 HeavyDuty Eco with G-1000 Eco inside. This material is perfect for people who are traveling more outdoors as it can take any mud or stains quite easily. The slim format for travel with room for a passport (max. measurements 125 x 90 mm) and open pockets for banknotes, credit cards. It also includes a small zippered pocket for coins on the inside which is perfect as you always end up with way too much shrapnel when on holiday.

Environmental Info: Organic, Recycled

Height: 16 cm

Material: G-1000® HeavyDuty Eco: 65% polyester, 35% cotton

Size Range: One size

Weight: 140 g

Width: 11 cm

At a price tag of $60.00, the Fjällräven is at a mid-range price tag. It’s a great all-around travel wallet and I like it for its strong build quality and complete zip-around design. For more information on the Fjällräven check out their website by clicking below.

Wingback Travel Wallet

The latest offering from Wingback offers one of the most premium travel wallets and the ability to easily store your passport. Wingback is all about premium quality, and that’s reflected with the leather choice and their high level of craftsmanship. Wingback wallets are made from a full-grain vegetable-tanned Tuscan leather, that has a beautiful thick hide and amazing smell. You can guarantee the Wingback Travel Wallet or any wallet from their range, will develop a beautiful patina over time.

In terms of features and layout, The Wingback Travel Wallet has a very strong design. It can hold anywhere between 4 – 12 credit/debit cards, up to 2 passports, and around 20 notes of all currency sizes. The positioning of card slots is very pleasing with everything laid out and spaced out for maximum utility and ease of access. The only downside, compared to other passport wallets, is the wallet can’t accommodate things like tickets or larger paper items. But the benefit of not having this is the wallet is a smaller size coming in at 100mm x 154mm x 10mm.

One final note, as all Wingback Wallets are handmade to order, in London, which gives them the opportunity to customize your wallet to your liking. Wingback offers an inscription (or monogram) inside or outside the wallet of up to 20 to 130 characters. At a price of £130.00 (or $166.00), the Wingback Travel Wallet isn’t cheap, but you pay for the quality you get. For more information check out their official website using the link below.

Harber London Travel Wallet

Haber London has done a fantastic job of creating a brand full of fun, creative, and innovative leather goods. From wallets, phone cases though to bags and accessories, Harber London does it all with a stance of good quality and affordability. One such offering from Harber London is their range of Travel Wallets. Today we’re going to focus on their RFID Protection wallet that’s designed in a long style bifold style. The wallet itself is made from full-grain leather that has a fantastic appearance with deep rich colors. That being said, the leather hasn’t the thickest hide meaning it can feel quite flimsy in the hand and not as higher quality as other wallets on this list.

Functionality wise the Harber London packs a punch with many great features not present on other wallets of its kind. This includes the inclusion of a quick access (pull tab) for easy access to cards and a dedicated slot for storage of tickets and other travel documents. Along with this, the Harber London can carry up to 12 cards easily and has enough room to accommodate a range of currencies what whatever country you’re traveling to.

Haber London provides a halfway house between price and quality and does a great job of providing innovative functionality in a still small and compact wallet. At a price tag of $112.00, The Harber London is a fair price tag and coupled with a great warranty and speed shipping it might be a great option for you. Check out Harber London’s official website by clicking the link below.

The best overall travel wallet

Made from Fjallraven’s own blend of incredibly durable G-1000 fabric, this travel wallet is no exception to their commitment to producing quality outdoor and travel gear; and the reviewers certainly agree, with many of them commenting on the toughness of the fabric. The only negative is the price - but let’s not forget you get what you pay for.

The best versatile travel wallet

If you’re looking for a travel wallet that blends style with substance, we think we’ve found the one. Yes, it’s PU leather not real leather and that slight disappointment is reflected in the reviews, but if you take a look at its neat envelope design and its variety of pockets, you’ll find that there isn’t too much to complain about.

The best smart travel wallet

Ekster makes a line of voice-activated wallets, including this relatively traditional-looking credit card holder. However, beneath the handcrafted leather look is some serious tech. It's also compatible with Alexa and Google Home, which using a Chipolo tag can make your wallet emit a ring when you ‘say “where’s my wallet?” - pretty cool right!

1. Fjallraven Travel Wallet

Specifications, reasons to buy, reasons to avoid.

Made from Fjallraven’s own blend of incredibly durable G-1000 fabric, this travel wallet is no exception to their commitment to producing quality outdoor and travel gear; and the reviewers certainly agree, with many of them commenting on the toughness of the fabric.

Inside the nifty travel wallet, passports, boarding passes, cash, cards and even a pen can all be safely tucked away. The only negative is the price - but let’s not forget you get what you pay for.

  • Back to the top ⤴

2. Zoppen Travel Wallet

Your passport, boarding passes, money, phone and even your foreign sim card will be kept safe in its pockets, which, although for some, are on the tight side, will fit all your essentials for a compact travel companion.

3. Ekster Parliament Slim Leather Wallet

Losing your valuables is one of the biggest fears while travelling. Can technology help? Ekster makes a line of voice-activated wallets, including this relatively traditional-looking credit card holder. However, beneath the handcrafted leather look is some serious tech; as well as space for nine cards, six of which can be protected by a layer of RFID-block, but the wallet is also compatible with Alexa and Google Home, which using a Chipolo tag can make your wallet emit a ring when you ‘say “where’s my wallet?”

Funded within three hours on Kickstarter, this Ekster wallet also offers worldwide traceability via a smart card so you can tell you where it was last seen on a map. That’s the same technology used by FedEx to track its containers. What’s more, it’s all solar-powered and doesn’t run out of charge for two months.

The best practical travel wallet

4. snugpak grab a5.

If you’re an outdoors type who’s just as likely to find themselves in the wild as in an airport, you’re going to want a travel document holder with special skills. Cue the Grab A5 from sleeping bag-maker Snugpak. As well as documents, the Grab A5 – with is, naturally, the size of A5 paper, so fairly compact – has room for a pen holder and many other items in its small pockets (there’s even a dedicated phone pocket). The document storage section has a waterproof cover, which will add peace of mind if you go out on a hike. Zipped all around, it’s also got a small carry handle.

The best cheap travel wallet

5. campteck travel wallet & organiser pouch.

Thoroughly affordable and with plenty of storage, this travel passport wallet can fit four passports and up to six cards, and is plenty big enough for storing boarding passes, too. Unlike most of its rivals, this product includes space for extras; inside are two pen holders, a zippered mesh pocket for notes and coins, and even a tab for attaching keys. It's also got RFID-blocking technology built-in to protect everything inside the wallet, which zips shut along three sides. It’s not particularly stylish, but it is very cheap.

The best minimalist travel wallet

6. travando slim wallet.

This clever bi-fold wallet is crafted in Germany, and it shows. It’s organised so well; there are seven card slots – six on the inside and one on the outside – but despite that it’s a mere 11.9x8.3x1.6 cm. Unlike most modern travel wallets, it’s designed to carry cash, with a stainless steel money clip integrated into the interior that securely grasps bank notes. The Travando is also constructed to protect against data theft by RFiD scanners.

The best travel wallet for RFID protection

7. pacsafe rfidsafe v200 travel wallet.

If you’re looking for a no frills travel wallet that that keeps your cards, cash and receipts safe, this Pacsafe wallet could serve you well. While you can see from the design that there is room enough for up to 8 cards, there’s also a window pocket each for your passport and driver’s license and plenty of room for loose change.

The manufacturer promises protection against identity theft, while the bracelet with its handy loop acts as a handy mechanism to prevent you from dropping it in the middle of the airport concourse.

The best waterproof travel wallet

8. lifeventure rfid protected document wallet.

RFID protected and featuring waterproof fabric and zip, this lifeproof travel document holder is the perfect practical solution to carrying around your documents. One side of the wallet is dedicated to travel money and cards, with 9 slots providing enough room for IDs, credit cards, debit cards and travel money cards.

Thanks to its RFID protection, you don’t need to worry about identity fraud, especially if you’re travelling to areas where that kind of thing is rife, and with a smartphone stash pocket, too, you can make sure all of your necessities are safely tucked away, yet completely accessible for when you need them.

The best compact travel wallet

9. lifeventure rfid mini travel wallet.

When you’re travelling, you’re going to be on a budget and if you’re planning on backpacking off the beaten track, Lifeventure has made sure this travel wallet is prepared for all circumstances.

Find yourself waist deep in a river? It’s waterproof. Find yourself going through some sketchy looking areas? It protects against Radio-Frequency Identification devices. It boasts pockets for your passport, boarding passes, cash, cards and even your smartphone. It's the perfect compact travel wallet and for the price, and reviewers agree, you can’t beat it.

The best multi pocket travel wallet

10. go travel document organiser.

This travel document holder is the perfect contender for the most amount of pockets featured in a small space competition. There’s several card slots, an ID slot, a travel money zipped pocket, a slot to put your boarding passes and enough slots for several passports, if you’re travelling as a family.

It’s also good to note that this travel wallet provides RFID protection, so you can be completely sure that your identification is safe. Comments suggest that it’s fairly bulky in size, and therefore needs a large pocket for storing it away, aside from that, it’s the perfect practical travel companion.

How to buy the best travel wallet for you

Your choice of travel wallet will partly depend on style. Leather screams ‘sophisticated businessman’, while durable, waterproof materials will appeal to those who only entertain travel-grade products that will last much longer than the air miles you collect.

Having space for passports and cards is standard, but not all travel document holders have space for keys, pens, and cash, and even some electronics.

You can find small travel wallets for single travellers, slightly bigger versions for couples, and whopping great A4-sized versions for large families and tour group leaders. They can be pocket-sized, or rucksack-sized, depending on your requirements. There are other things to think about, too.

Another aspect to consider is whether you want your travel wallet to provide protection against Radio-Frequency Identification devices (RFiD). Although rare, identification theft is an issue, and something you may or may not be worried out. Some of the best travel wallets block these devices, while others don’t, so it’s worth bearing it in mind when choosing. Ditto worldwide tracking, which adds even more peace of mind in case of theft.

When it comes to the best travel wallets, you get what you pay for. There’s nothing wrong with being cheap and cheerful, but if you want a wallet to become your faithful travel companion, you’re going to have to stretch that budget.

If you have a travel document holder, it's usefulness can spread beyond airports. Always take the same credit card when you travel? If you do have cards and documents that you only use when you travel – principally your passport, of course – a travel document holder is the ideal place to store them all when you are at home. Ditto emergency cash; no-one should go anywhere without at least US$50 in emergency cash (dollars are always better than pounds, especially when travelling outside Europe), and a travel document holder is the ideal place to keep it when you're at home as well as on your travels.

TripSavvy / Chloe Jeong

A travel purse is an important investment with many roles to fulfill: it must secure your belongings, make them accessible while going through airport security , and keep them organized while sightseeing. The best travel purses allow you to move through your journey hands-free while offering aesthetic versatility.

When choosing a travel purse, look for anti-theft features such as RFID-blocking technology and locking compartments. A bag worn across the body is inherently more secure than a shoulder pick, and thoughtful organization keeps your belongings accessible and away from would-be pickpockets.

Whether you’re looking for a budget-friendly option or a worthy splurge for a lifetime investment, here are the best travel purses.

What to Look for in a Travel Purse

Anti-theft protection.

Chances are, you’re getting a travel purse because you want the extra security features it offers when you’re on the go. So look for travel purses incorporating RFID-blocking technology so scammers can’t swipe your credit card details from afar and locking compartments to keep valuables where they belong.

Some bag types are inherently more secure than others. Shoulder bags, for example, can be a little easier to swipe because they’re so easy to yank off. On the other hand, messenger bags and crossbody bags are harder to remove and run with. They also keep your valuables closest to your body.

When it comes to travel purses, external compartments are handy for keeping items you need to access easily, like phones and car keys. However, these are also extremely easy for thieves to grab, especially if the pockets aren't secure. Think carefully about how you use your purse. If having external pockets makes you nervous, you can always throw your need-to-haves into a pouch in a deeper tote bag.

Always keep your passport in your purse while traveling; it should stay with you versus in any checked luggage out of your sight. The same goes for any essential medicines. Carry a portable charger for your key devices. Bring hand sanitizer and wipes for cleaning up when a proper sink isn’t available. Lip balm helps soothe lips dehydrated in flight. And if you’re flying internationally, bring a pen if you have customs forms to fill out before you land.

TSA’s current guidelines allow one liquid hand sanitizer container of up to 12 ounces per passenger in carry-on bags until further notice. (All other liquids, gels, and aerosols brought to a checkpoint are still limited to 3.4 ounces.)

Each airline has its own specific requirements, so consult your carrier’s rules for your fare class. But generally speaking, yes: a purse, briefcase, or laptop case in typical sizes should all be considered personal items.

Let’s take a look at all the options and figure out which travel wallet has the best match for your needs as well as your style.

Five Seriously Good Reasons You Should Get a Travel Wallet

Let’s look at five seriously good reasons you need a travel wallet.

  • Easy Access to Documents
  • A Place to Carry Multiple Currencies if Needed
  • A Secure Place to Keep Credit Cards and Hotel Keys
  • Design With Function
  • Keeps you Organized When You Travel

1.      Easy Access to Documents

When you travel, you need your travel documents to be on you and accessible when you need them, at quickly. Travel wallets are usually thinner than everyday wallets, but some are designed to hold more than one passport. Whatever style you choose, your travel wallet will be easy to find and let you get to what you need quickly and easily.

2.      A Place to Carry Cash if Needed

Yes, it is the twenty-first century and most of us carry very little cash when we go about our daily business. However, you may find when you travel, credit cards are not enough.  What about tips for the valet?  What about the little handmade trinket from the street-side vendor. Having some sort of cash in small bills when you travel is always a good idea.  That gets complicated though when you travel to a different country.  Keeping multiple currencies organized is a must if you want to stay organized, keep enough of the right kind and amount of cash on hand, and if you don't want to be pulling wads of crumpled bills from your pocket.

3.      A Secure Place to Keep Credit Cards and Hotel Key

Most of us live off our credit cards. Thieves and pickpockets are always lurking around tourist spots and crowded places like subways. Having a place to keep those credit cards safe or hidden away is a crucial feature and a seriously good reason you need a travel wallet.

  • A travel wallet can be hidden under your clothing making it difficult for pickpockets to find it.
  • Slots for your credit cards keep all your credit cards visible and secure so that they don’t fall out of your travel wallet when you open it.
  • Keeping your credit cards in one safe place makes them easier to get to them when you, and only you, need them.

Also look for a wallet that has RFID blocking technology .  RFID scanners can scan your purse or pocket and pick up your chip information.  Wallets with RFID blocking lining are common now and are effective at eliminating that threat.

Pro tip: When you travel, it is a good idea to take only the cards you need for your trip and leave the rest at home.  There is no need to carry your library card to a foreign country!

4.      Choose the Design With Function in Mind

Try to understand what your needs are and the purpose of your travel wallet.  Here are some things to consider:

  • Lightweight and Simple  - Looking for a simple wallet to hold your passport and a couple of cards, look for something streamlined .
  • Stylish and Chic  - If being trendy is your thing, there are many designer wallets now available to help accessorize your look.
  • Multipurpose - Traveling with your family?  Need to hold multiple passports and the travel itinerary?  Carrying different currencies and maps?  Wanderings has a long travel wallet that may meet your needs.

5.      Keeps You Organized When You Travel

A travel wallet helps get you organized so you can find what you are looking for when you need it. Some travel wallets hold just the essentials like an ID and some money. Other travel wallets help keep you organized by having a place anything else you may need when you travel such as your passport, cash, and credit cards, hotel key, itinerary, directions, travel visas. Other travel wallets hold not only your passport but all the rest of your family’s passports as well.

Whether you want to keep everything in your travel wallet or just the essentials you need while you travel is up to you. What type of travel wallet you need depends on how you are going to use it. Keeping yourself organized and sane is a seriously good reason for buying a travel wallet.

Are travel wallets a good idea?

It may be obvious, but travel wallets are designed specifically to help you when you travel. Your everyday wallet or purse contains so many things that are important to you, but not necessarily needed when you are hopping from airport to airport. While you may like keeping them in your day-to-day wallet, do you really need to carry receipts from your dry cleaning or pictures of your nephew (even though he is incredibly adorable) when you are touring the Louvre or wandering through Copenhagen?

Travel wallets are a good idea because not only do they keep your items organized and available, but they also keep them safe. A travel wallet can be a money belt that is hidden under your shirt. Some travel wallets can also have RFID technology which some people claim prevents hackers from reading your credit card information through your wallet.

As with anything when you travel, you should use a little caution. Take only what you will need when you travel. Once you have reached your destination, put things you don’t need like your passport or extra credit cards in a safe or lockbox.

So are travel wallets a good idea? The answer is yes!

Do you really need a travel wallet?

There are few things that are worse than standing in line at customs and having to dig through your travel bag for your passport. Why not just keep everything on your mobile phone, you ask? Well, sometimes technology fails you. If your mobile phone dies and your boarding pass and your hotel address were on your mobile phone, you may not have that information available when you want it. If only you had printed out the confirmation and kept it in your travel wallet, you’d have that information available in your travel wallet when you needed it.

  • Need to show your passport ? Voila! Open your travel wallet and boom, there it is.
  • Need to pay the taxi or Uber driver who drove you to your hotel? Look! Your credit card is right here in your travel wallet.
  • Worried about pickpockets? Keep stuff like your passport and credit cards close and secure while you are moving, hidden away from the Artful Dodger’s gang.

Simply put, a travel wallet is one organized place to keep all your essential travel documents and cash within easy access for you and hidden away from thieves. So yes, if you want a more relaxed travel experience and fewer stress-related headaches, you really do need a travel wallet.

What to Look For in a Travel Wallet

A travel wallet offers so many options, its hard to know where to begin. Let’s start by taking a look at what to look for in a travel wallet.

  • Traveling in Style
  • What Is It Made Of

A Place to Store Your Passport

A place for extras.

  • A Place to Keep Your Mobile Phone
  • What is RFID and Why Would I Need It?

1.Traveling in Style

Traveling in style can mean different things to different people when we are talking about travel wallets. Some people want a travel wallet that is functional as well as having a little pizazz. Others want a basic travel wallet that has only what they need at the moment.

If you want to keep thieves and pickpockets away, a travel wallet hidden away from prying eyes might be the style for you. On the other hand, if you want a more stylish look that can go from runway to dinner on the town, maybe a travel wallet that looks like a purse is what you need.

  • Just the Basics
  • Hidden Away

Bigger and In Plain View

Smaller and Usually Out of Sight

Just the Basics: You carry only what you need to get from point A to point B. Those items would probably be:

  • Your credit card
  • Your passport if you are going international

Hidden Away: What you carry on you is limited to where you are carrying it. We are talking about a slender money belt hidden under your shirt or maybe a small pocket travel wallet hidden around your leg holding just a  credit card and an ID. Most travel wallets that are hidden on your body are small in size and hide comfortably.

All Aboard: Traveling with a family presents its own challenges. Having to keep track and find everyone’s passport can be a headache-inducing nightmare. A family-style travel wallet keeps all the passports together and easily within reach.

When you are thinking about the style of your travel wallet, you also want to consider how the travel wallet will be carried. Size is a big consideration. When you are traveling, you are limited to a small amount of space. The size of your travel wallet will depend on where you keep it when you take a trip and what you will be carrying in your travel wallet.

The travel wallets listed here are big enough to hold a passport and other documents as well as credit cards and money. While some can convert to being hidden, most of these travel wallets are meant to be seen.

  • Document Travel Wallet - If you have papers that you will need to access while you are traveling, a document travel wallet is a good option. Usually longer in length, a document travel wallet will keep all your papers neat and uncrumpled.
  • Family Passport Travel Wallet - A family passport travel wallet is longer in length to accommodate two to three passports or more. Because of this, and the fact that many family passport travel wallets may also have more places to carry items like boarding passes, this style of travel wallet may be a little bigger and thicker than other travel wallets.
  • Wristlets -  A practical way to hold on to all your belongings, a wristlet travel wallet has all the same features of a small travel wallet but with a strap that goes around your wrist. A wristlet style travel wallet is also a good choice for after you get to your destination. Just slip your mobile phone and your room key in your wristlet travel wallet and you are ready for a night on the town.
  • Clutch or Purse - This is a bigger style travel wallet in a more familiar clutch or purse style. The clutch or purse style travel wallet has the slots and compartments you need for your passport and credit cards. Some also have RFID technology and can fit your mobile phone. You can also slip in whatever else you need for your trip through the airport that will make your life easier.

These travel wallets are smaller and ideal for keeping your money and credit cards secure and hidden. But this style may not always be as easily accessible, and some are not big enough to hold a passport.

  • Money Belts - A money belt fits around your belly much like a fanny pack but you can hide it under your shirt. You can wear it upfront or slide it around to the back. Its bigger size allows you to carry everything you need but safely hidden away.
  • Travel Security Belt Wallet - A belt wallet or travel security belt has a secret compartment built into the belt to hide your money. There is usually not much room for anything else. A good feature to look for in a travel security belt is how easy it is to take off and put back on quickly when going through airport security.
  • Neck or Pouch Travel Wallet - This style of travel wallet hangs hidden under your clothes or jacket. The neck or pouch style travel wallet can hold everything you need from passports to lip balm.

Some neck or pouch style travel wallets are designed specifically to fit snuggly against your body and hidden from sight. Others can be worn outside your clothing like a crossbody bag, but with the features of a good travel wallet.

  • Leg Pouch Travel Wallets - A leg pouch style travel wallet fits around your thigh or shin or ankle. A leg pouch travel wallet has compartments for your id and credit cards, but some can carry much more. Room for your mobile phone and possibly your passport as well are expected, but there are even some leg pouch travel wallets that are gear bags designed to wear outside your clothing.

You can use these leg pouch style travel wallets for not only traveling but running and bike riding too.  The designs go from simple and plain, to a fancy garter style travel wallet.

  • Shoulder Holster Travel Wallets - A shoulder or holster style travel wallet fits under your arm and over your shoulder. It fits next to your body, hidden under your shirt or jacket. Some designs have more room to carry more of your personal effects, while others are slim and close-fitting.
  • Wrist Travel Wallet - A wrist travel wallet is different from a wristlet travel wallet. A wrist travel wallet fits snuggly around your wrist and is slim enough to be hidden under your shirt sleeve rather than hanging off your wrist like a wristlet. Again, these can vary in size depending on what you need.
  • Taxi Wallet - A taxi wallet is a thin bifold wallet that you can keep your credit cards and ID easily available when traveling around town. Taxi wallets come in a variety of styles and materials but the overall feature is that they are small and hold just a few things. A taxi travel wallet can simplify your life and make it easy to find what you need at a moment’s notice.
  • Bra Travel Wallet - You can wear your heart on your sleeve, and you can wear your travel items on your chest. Hanging from a loop around the bra strap, a bra travel wallet keeps what you need close to your heart. Some bra travel wallets are super soft and made from silk. Other styles are lacier and use Velcro to attach to the bra itself.
  • Underwear Travel Wallet- Available for men and women , this is the ultimate way to keep your possessions hidden and close to you at all times. This travel wallet is made into your underwear. It has a zipper or Velcro pocket to hold your passport, cash, and whatever else you need when you are traveling.

What is it Made Of?

A travel wallet can be made from anything a regular wallet can. You want to look for a material that fits the purpose you need.

  • Leather- Leather is the traditional choice for well-made wallets. As well as being durable, a leather travel wallet can add style and class to your look.
  • Fabric- Travel wallets can be constructed from any number of fabrics. You can choose from rip-stop nylon to RFID blocking fabric or even silk for a hidden bra style travel wallet. Your choices are limited only by your requirements and your budget.
  • Metal- Some travel wallets are a hard metal case. This is great for protecting your credit cards from getting damaged and some may even provide RFID protection. One of the cons of a metal travel wallet is that they are usually not big enough to carry more than just a few credit cards and a little cash. If you need more from your travel wallet, a metal travel wallet may not be for you.
  • Waterproof- For those travelers who will be participating in water activities where they want their travel items close and secure but also dry, there are a number of travel wallets that are waterproof. The design for these waterproof travel wallets can be made of water-resistant nylon. The travel wallet can also be incorporated into a water-tight plastic pouch.

Most travel wallets have a place to store your passport. Let’s look at why that might be a useful feature in a travel wallet.

  • A place to keep your passport handy is extremely helpful when you are traveling outside the country, and you need to get through customs and on airplanes quickly.
  • Some hotels require a passport when you register on arrival. Having it available at your fingertips makes registering quicker.
  • if you are traveling with a family internationally , a family-style travel wallet that can keep everyone’s passport in one place will make your life much easier.
  • Enough Card Slots: Most people have more than one credit card and you will need a place in your travel wallet to keep all the ones you need on your journey. Also, you may want to keep your ID on you as well. Depending on what else you need to take along with you, you’ll need a place to keep everything securely in your travel wallet.
  • A Key Holder: You may need a key holder in your travel wallet for a hotel key (if they actually use a key) or to keep your house key ready for when you return back home. A travel wallet with a key holder can be very convenient at times.
  • A Place for Paper and Pen : It may seem old-fashioned, but you never know when a pen and a piece of paper will come in handy. Your mobile phone may not always be available, and you’ll want to know the name of that restaurant that the local guide suggested. Having a pen and a slip of paper in your travel wallet will make sure you get to that fabulous meal.

A Place To Keep Your Mobile Phone

Are you on your phone all the time? In today’s world for most of us, our mobile phones are a necessity in our everyday lives. Keeping your mobile phone next to your other travel essentials is a great benefit in a travel wallet. You should make sure to think about how you will carry and get to your mobile phone when you consider all the different types of travel wallet options.

Some travel wallets offer a charger that is built right into the travel wallet itself. This is an especially useful feature. No more having to worry about whether you put your charger in your bag or where it is. This makes keeping your mobile phone charged and available when you need it, that much easier.

What is RFID and Why Would I Need RFID Blocking Technology in my Travel Wallet?

RFID stands for Radio Frequency Identification.

An RFID credit card is a contactless credit card. You don’t need to insert it into a chip reader or swipe it. You hold it up to the reader and it reads the information from there, much the same as you can do from your mobile phone with certain apps. You can tell if you have an RFID credit card by the symbol that looks like a sideways Wi-Fi symbol.

Passports have had a microchip embedded in them since 2007. The idea behind having a chip in your passport is to increase security. The chip has only the same contact information that is on your passport. If someone were to alter your passport, the chip would show the correct information.

RFID-enabled credit cards and passports can be read without having to take them out of your wallet. Because of this, there have been concerns that thieves or hackers with the right technology can access your credit card numbers and contact information.  To prevent this from happening, some travel wallets have RFID blocking technology built into them.

A good travel wallet that has the features and style you want and need can make your journey much easier. Your travel wallet can be carried on you in plain sight. If you want to keep all your travel documents and your money close to you and safe, you can choose a travel wallet that is worn under your clothing, hidden from prying eyes. You also can choose a travel wallet that is a more minimalistic version of your daily wallet that you can carry in your pocket or your travel bag.

There are a lot of options to consider. The five reasons presented here should help you determine if a travel wallet is a good idea for you.
