Buena música, buen ambiente, y camareros majos, recomendaaaaadoooo

Suele estar abarrotado determinados días a determinadas horas.

Time Out dice

A Guide to Lavapiés: Madrid’s Coolest Barrio

It’s easy to hop on a flight to Madrid, check off the main sites like the Palacio Real and Plaza Mayor, head on a day trip to Toledo or Segovia , and call it visited in two or three days. However, there is so much more to Spain’s lively and dynamic capital than the well-trodden stops that adorn many visitors’ Madrid bucket lists. So, if you’re curious to step a bit off the beaten path and explore a more local side of the Spanish capital, you cannot go wrong with checking out hip and trendy Barrio de Lavapiés.

Located just south of central Madrid and only a stone’s throw from the top sites of the city lies effortlessly cool, multicultural Lavapiés — one of the hippest neighbourhoods in the city. Colourful murals and art pieces decorate the walls, lively tapas bars spill out onto the sidewalks, and the energy and heart of Madrid’s international community is hard to escape.

Therefore, if you’re looking to see a different side of Madrid that is a world apart from the Royal sites, there are lots of cool things to do in Lavapiés and it’s worth spending some time of your trip to the Spanish capital to explore this cool barrio.

Table of Contents

How to Get to Lavapiés

The Lavapiés neighbourhood is located almost directly south of central Madrid, and it is only about a 10-minute walk from the Puerta del Sol or Plaza Mayor before you can find yourself in this dynamic neighbourhood.

However, if you are staying in a neighbourhood to the north of central Madrid, it might be easier to get to Lavapiés via metro or bus. The neighbourhood is served by a few metro stations that you can easily alight at and get wherever you want to visit on this list within about 10 minutes walking.

The most obvious metro stop to alight at is Lavapiés, which serves line 3, or Embajadores, which serves lines 3 and 5. Other stations in the barrio include Antón Martín and Tirso de Molina both on line 1.

There are numerous buses that serve areas all throughout the barrio if you’re not fond of using the metro or there are some technical difficulties with the line you want to travel on.

If you want to save money while in Madrid , especially if you’re located centrally, you can forgo public transportation entirely and just head to Lavapiés on foot. As I stated earlier, it is very much not far from central Madrid and is easy to get there.

Exploring Madrid by foot

Things to Do in Lavapiés

The main magic of the Barrio de Lavapiés has more to do with its energy and walkability rather than its traditional sites. So, first and foremost, I would recommend visiting the neighbourhood with an open mind and ready for your feet to lead you, rather than a bucket list of activities to check off.

Spend an hour or two wandering down some narrow streets and see what you can find! If you don’t want to do this on your own, it is definitely possible to take a walking tour of the neighbourhood , which will give you the added benefit of learning more about the history and people who live in this multicultural barrio.

While there aren’t grand royal palaces to see or massive historic squares to take a coffee break in, there are a few things to do in Lavapiés that can be very well worth checking out.

Reina Sofia Museum

If you’re visiting Madrid, it is likely that you will plan to head to some of the city’s most famous art museums. While the Museo del Prado is very much the most popular among them, the Reina Sofia Museum comes in at a close second, and it has a convenient location right on the edge of Lavapiés. While exploring this museum won’t necessarily give you a glimpse into the vibrant neighbourhood, it certainly isn’t something you should miss when visiting Madrid.

The Reina Sofia is one of the premier modern art museums not just in Spain, but in the entire world. and it houses numerous works by some of the best names in the world of modern and contemporary art — most notably Picasso and Dalí.

The museum is best known for being the home of one of Picasso’s most famous works, Guernica , which is painted as a reaction to the 1937 airstrikes on the eponymous Basque town . The abstract work expertly depicts the horrors and atrocities of this act — the first time an aerial bombing of that type was ever carried out — and it is incredibly powerful to see.

However, equally as powerful (though not nearly as popular) are the sketches that Picasso did to practice for the massive piece. They can be seen in the same exhibit gallery as Guernica .

While many people visiting the Reina Sofia make a beeline for Picasso’s most famous work and then leave, the museum is absolutely massive and a true heaven for fans of modern and contemporary art. You could easily spend a few hours here and not see everything. It is best to purchase your tickets for entry online so you don’t have to buy them when you arrive.

Regardless of whether it’s a mainstream attraction at all, there is no doubt about it that the Museo Reina Sofia is one of the best things to do in Lavapiés, if not Madrid in general.

Reina Sofia Museum

La Gatoteca

Lavapiés is becoming known as one of Madrid’s premier hipster neighbourhoods and it wouldn’t be able to live up to that kind of label without succumbing some of the biggest trends around the world. And one of the worldwide trends that Lavapiés embraced before elsewhere in Madrid was the cat café.

Madrid’s first cat café, known as La Gatoteca ( gato means cat in Spanish), is located only a stone’s throw away from the Reina Sofia Museum. The café is home to a colony of rescue cats and serves as a shelter and adoption front for them to find their forever homes.

What makes it unique is that La Gatoteca operates as a cafe, where you can enjoy a coffee or tea while snuggling with those cute little felines.

Though it isn’t always necessary, if you want to visit the café, it can be useful to make a reservation to ensure that you can get all of the kitty cuddles you want!

Mercado Antón Martín

When visiting Madrid, everyone knows about the Mercado de San Miguel, the popular tapas market located right next to Plaza Mayor. And while San Miguel is certainly worth visiting if you only have a short time in the city and was to experience its tapas culture while staying in the same place, it is quite expensive and won’t necessarily give you the local experience that many markets in Spain’s capital will give you.

Enter: Mercado Antón Martín . This market, located in the eastern part of Lavapiés only about 150 metres from Antón Martín metro station, feels a world away from the fancy tapas stalls of the Mercado de San Miguel.

Mercado Antón Martín is an ideal place to stop by if you’re interested in seeing how local Madrileños live, shop, and eat.

Set over two levels, there are numerous market stalls including butcher’s counters, cheese shops, fishmongers, and fruit and vegetable stands where you could buy anything you needed for you dinners or picnics while supporting local businesses and producers.

There are also a number of little bars and restaurants where you can get a taste of multicultural Lavapiés. You can also book a food tour that includes a stop in Anton Martin.

In the Mercado Antón Martín, you can embrace the Spanish stronghold of a pre-lunch vermouth (this is actually referred to as la hora de vermut or “vermouth time”) before dining on some of the best tacos to be found outside of Mexico. This is one of the things that makes this particular market as unique and diverse as the Barrio de Lavapiés itself.

Barrio de Lavapiés

One of the things that most “alternative” neighbourhoods across the globe have in common is a thriving arts scene. And while you can enjoy classic modern art adorning the walls of the Reina Sofia, you can see just as many works of art covering the streets of Lavapiés.

If you love street art, then Lavapiés is a place you much visit while in Madrid. There are numerous interesting pieces to be found if you just take the time to wander down some of the streets, from small bits of stencil art to magnificent murals that will make you want to stop and stare for hours.

There are numerous streets you could walk up in order to see some of the best street art that the barrio has to offer, but we would recommend taking a stroll along Calle de Embajadores, which has some of the most impressive bits of work.

Street art on Calle de Embajadores

Lavapiés’ Tapas Scene

While the adjacent neighbourhood of La Latina may be more well known in the tourist scene as the place to go out for tapas in Madrid, you can’t go wrong with straying away from Calle de la Cava Baja and heading to dynamic Lavapiés instead.

While Madrid certainly has its own gastronomic delights, it is also a great place to sample cuisines from other regions of Spain as well. Due to Lavapiés’ historic tendency to attract immigrants (including economic migrants from elsewhere in Spain), this is an excellent way to try regional Spanish cuisine without ever having to leave the capital.

There are seemingly hundreds of tapas bars dotting the barrio and if you happen to find yourself in the neighbourhood on a Friday or Saturday night, you will almost certainly find most bars to be so packed that they’re standing room only and spilling out onto the street. There arguably isn’t a better neighbourhood to experience the best of Madrid’s tapas scene than Lavapiés.

Barrio de Lavapiés

Mercado San Fernando

If you want to explore an even more multicultural market than the aforementioned Mercado Antón Martín, then you must head to the Mercado San Fernando .

This huge market located close to the Lavapiés metro station is an excellent stop if you want some fantastic Latin American food from countless different countries but want it all in one place.

The market, though packed with a number of eateries cooking cuisines ranging from Mexican to Chilean to Colombian to German, is also a great place to pick up both local Spanish produce and groceries and international favourites. It is also open on Sundays, which isn’t common with many markets in the city, including Antón Martín.

Where to Eat in Lavapiés

One of the best things to do in Lavapiés is tapear (the wonderful Spanish verb that literally means “to have some tapas”). Blessed with seemingly thousands of eateries, it can be difficult to know where to eat in Lavapiés. Here are some of our top suggestions:

La Canibal – This craft beer and natural wine bar is a cool, hip place to eat at in Lavapiés that strays a bit away from the traditional. They have a number of great, local beers and wines on tap (yes, the wines are on tap, too!) and a broad menu with lots of inventive tapas and raciones. You can also get cheese and meat boards here.

Taberna El Sur — Easily one of the most popular eateries in the Lavapiés neighbourhood, this little restaurant attracts a happy mix of both locals and tourists and has an extensive menu of classic Spanish favourites. If you want to save some money, come here during lunch and order off their affordable menú del día (daily menu).

Los Chuchis – This small and cosy bar serves delicious British/Spanish fusion dishes in a casual and homely environment. They have a great daily menu option for lunch and are open till late in the evenings if you’re after tapas and raciones.

La Fisna Vinos — This cosy wine bar located super close to Lavapiés station is an excellent choice if you’re keen to support small, Spanish winemakers. They have an extensive wine list and a broad tapas menu, making this an excellent choice for the evening.

La Caleta — This little place is an excellent option if you keen for an escape to the Andalicían coast but don’t want to leave Madrid. Famous for its Cádiz-style seafood, this is a favourite place amongst locals in Lavapiés.

El Venorrillo Murciano — This unassuming restaurant is an excellent place to go if you want to try some authentic cuisine from the Murcia region of southeastern Spain. Again a favourite amongst locals, this place is famous for its extensive rice dishes.

Barrio de Lavapiés

Where to Stay in Lavapiés

If you’re keen to spend the night in Lavapiés rather than just visit the barrio for the day, there are quite a few accommodation options available for you.

Catalonia Atocha — This hotel, located very close to Madrid’s Atocha train station, is an excellent place to stay if you want to be close to all of the action in Lavapiés but also within walking distance of all of the tourist attractions in central Madrid as well. They have several clean, comfortable rooms available, a restaurant on site, and a swimming pool to take the edge off of those hot Madrid days.

Artrip Hotel — This small boutique hotel is an excellent place to base yourself in the Barrio de Lavapiés. They have numerous clean, comfortable, and air-conditioned rooms available and are located within walking distance of many of Lavapiés’ and Madrid’s top sites.

Madrid’s Barrio de Lavapiés might well be the coolest neighbourhoods in the capital. Filled with an undeniable energy and packed with great art and eateries, you really can’t go wrong with spending some time in this incredible barrio.

9 Lavapiés Bars & Restaurants: Tapas, Drinks & Beyond

If you want to understand Madrid—the real Madrid—these Lavapiés bars and restaurants are a great place to start.

Until recently, Lavapiés was one of central Madrid’s most affordable neighborhoods. With its hilly streets and characteristic corralas (Madrid’s characteristic housing style where neighbors share an interior patio), throughout the 19th and 20th centuries Lavapiés attracted migrants from all over the Iberian peninsula moving to the capital city to start anew.

These migrants established some of Lavapiés’ most classic establishment: the no-frills bars we still love today.

Exterior view of five stories of an apartment block with balconies and green blinds.

Later, as Spain joined the EU in the 1980s and experienced economic growth, many new arrivals from all corners of the world arrived, settling into central Madrid’s most affordable neighborhood. For that reason, as of 2018, statistics reflect that as many as 88 different nationalities are represented within Lavapiés. As a result, the neighborhood is a fantastic way to discover the changing face of Spain and all the resulting gastronomic offerings.

Bar Colores

Located on Calle Mesón de Paredes, a bustling Lavapiés street lined with garment vendors, Bar Colores serves up chiefly Senegalese classics. Look out for maffe (meat stewed with peanuts and vegetables) and Senegal’s national dish: thieboudienne (stewed fish and vegetables).

The prices here are fantastic and the wait staff is friendly. The star dishes sell out quick, so get there early.

Bodegas Lo Máximo

A bar with a story that in many ways embodies the complicated and precarious future of Lavapiés, Bodegas Lo Máximo ( Calle de San Carlos, 6 ) has been the neighborhood bar famous for affordable cañas , Aperol spritzes, and Wednesday night bolero performances by owner Piluka Aranguren since 2000.

In recent years, its future as a staple Lavapiés bar de cañas was in danger. In 2019, the building was bought by a British investment firm planning to evict all the tenants and turn the building into apartment rentals. Luckily, Aranguren and her business partners were able to negotiate with the firm and ultimately save their beloved neighborhood watering hole.

Given its tumultuous recent past, one thing’s for sure. Now is undoubtedly the time to support small businesses like Bodegas Lo Máximo! Go have a beer or two and experience a true Madrid icon.

Exterior of a small bar with a red and white sign reading Bodegas Lo Máximo

Bar El Boquerón

The name El Boquerón ( Calle de Valencia, 14 ) literally translates to “the anchovy,” and is one of those Lavapiés bars that excites both young hipsters and older residents alike. Famous for cold beer and seafood, this is the classic place to start a night out in Lavapiés. Try the gambas a la plancha , or grilled prawns—always served with the head still on.

Overhead shot of whole cooked shrimp and small breadstick crackers on a white plate

Bendito Vinos y Vinilos

One of Lavapiés’ (and Madrid’s!) first bars with a focus on natural wines , Bendito Vinos y Vinilos and its owner José have managed to turn a huge number of young Spaniards onto these new and exciting vinos .

Served with no pretense, Bendito is the kind of bar where wait staff will ask what kind of wine you’re looking for, pour you a sip of what’s open, and patiently help you find a match. Their cheese and charcuterie boards include some of Spain’s most famous cheeses (straight from Quesería Cultivo ) and jamón at incredibly fair prices.

Close up of two people each holding a glass of white wine.

Just like Bendito Vinos y Vinilos, O Luar is located within the locally adored Mercado de San Fernando . One of our favorite dining options in the market, O Luar is run by a Venezuelan couple that specializes in arepas . Try the reina pepiada and, if you have a sweet tooth, their tres leches cake.

Taberna Badila

Not everything in Lavapiés is about bars and nightlife. When it comes to lunch in Madrid , Taberna Badila ( Calle de San Pedro Mártir, 6 )is easily one of the best values for a menú del día , the popular set menu of the day.

For €16 you can choose a first and second course with dessert and a drink included. The second course will always include a protein, and if you’re a fan of fish, you have to try the chicharro .

Also known as horse mackerel, this underappreciated and sustainable fish is caught in the cold waters of the Cantabrian sea. Badila’s chicharro a la bilbaína will rival any restaurant in Bilbao, where the dish originally comes from. Come hungry, and if variety is your thing, go with friends and share several of the dishes.

For dessert? Don’t miss the homemade cuajada , curdled sheep’s milk served with homemade blueberry jam. It mind sound strange, but trust us on this one—Badila never disappoints.

Two pieces of cooked fish garnished with herbs on a white plate.

As the sun starts to set and madrileños start to leave work, it’s time for our beloved post-work caña at a Lavapiés bar. For those moments, Café Pavón has it all: lively atmosphere, reasonable prices, olives and crispy chips served to accompany your beer, and their famous mojitos.

If you find yourself in the mood to begin an evening of cañeo (the perfect accompaniment to tapeo, cañeo is simply going out for small beers), follow the natural pull down the Calle Embajadores where you will find plenty of local bars and eateries to continue your route. And remember: don’t fear packed bars—those are the guaranteed local favorites!

Interior of an old-fashioned cafe-bar with globe ceiling lamps and wood paneling.

Returning back to Lavapiés’ austere and castizo character, no visit to the neighborhood is complete without a beer, a croqueta, and a zapatilla at Melo’s .

Literally translated as “shoe,” the signature sandwich at this local eatery is made entirely of Galician ingredients: bread filled with soft cow’s milk tetilla cheese and lacón or ham.

Melo’s fills up, so be fearless and assert yourself when it comes time to order at this classic Lavapiés bar. Also, if you like white wine, try their fruity Galician white wine served in white porcelain dishes, just like it’s done in Galicia.

Overhead shot of a plate of fried green peppers, a large sandwich, fried croquettes, a small tray of mini empanadas, and a glass of beer.

So, the only thing you’re missing at this point is something a little fancy, and TOGA will fit the bill.

Run by Argentine chefs serving up a mix of Latin American and Spanish dishes with Asian touches, the restaurant itself is lovely and the constantly evolving menu never disappoints. Make sure to reserve for dinner and ask for the off-the-menu options. If the noodles are available, they’re a must!

Upon leaving TOGA, you’re at a crossroads. You’ll be right by Plaza Cascorro, the dividing line between two beloved central Madrid neighborhoods. From here, you can either head back towards “Lavapi” (as Madrid youth lovingly refer to Lavapiés) and have some more beers. Or you can change neighborhoods and head into La Latina , another beloved central neighborhood famous for its terraces, Sunday flea market , charming squares, and the countless tapas bars along Cava Baja street.

Either way, the night has just begun.

Lavapiés Tapas FAQs

Located southeast of Madrid’s historic center, Lavapiés lies in the area framed by Calle de Embajadores and Calle de Atocha. The local metro stop of the same name is located in the center of the neighborhood. Metro stations Embajadores, La Latina, Tirso de Molina, and Antón Martín also serve the area.

As you may have guessed, our favorite thing to do in Lavapiés is eat! But this corner of Madrid has a lot more to offer, too. The famed Reina Sofía art museum is located within the neighborhood’s borders, as are the La Casa Encendida and Tabacalera cultural centers. The streets surrounding the Reina Sofía are lined by smaller independent art galleries. Furthermore, Lavapiés has lots of great small, independently owned small businesses that make for great boutique shopping. The San Fernando and Antón Martín markets are great places to go grocery shopping and enjoy the local atmosphere.

How to Hang Like a Local in Madrid’s Trendiest Neighborhood

A courtyard inside the Tabacalera, an old tobacco factory converted into a collaborative art space

Ten years ago, most Madrileños turned their nose up at Lavapiés, the melting-pot neighborhood just south of the historic center. Deemed too punk, too dirty, or too dangerous, this web of graffiti-sprayed streets was left in disrepair while trendsters and tourists flocked to gay-friendly Chueca, artsy Malasaña, and gentrified La Latina—but no longer.

Today Lavapiés is a vibrant multicultural hub that embodies the spirit of modern Madrid : open-armed, rootsy, and refreshingly rebellious. By day, Caribbean minimarts blare contagious calypso beats, quasi-legal art squats like the Tabacalera flaunt their latest creations, and Nordic-style cafés bustle with bearded-and-bunned Euro-hipsters. By night, a motley crew of revelers packs into the neighborhood’s pocket-size bars and nightclubs for retro dance parties, live performances, and underground DJ sets.

Lavapiés is arguably Madrid’s most castizo (“authentically Madrileño”) neighborhood.

Yet Lavapiés is arguably Madrid’s most castizo (“authentically Madrileño”) neighborhood, thanks to its charming corralas (traditional Madrid-style group housing), rough-and-ready plazas, and colorful local lore. Knock back a few vermús in an old-timey Lavapiés taberna , and a regular might regale you with tales of the Manolos, Lavapiés’s dandies romanticized in plays by Ramón de la Cruz, or with the legend of a decapitated acolyte (punishment for murdering his priest and stealing his riches) after whom Calle de la Cabeza is named.

The push and pull between past and present, between deep-rooted tradition and electrifying multiculturalism, makes Lavapiés endlessly intriguing—and explorable.

To experience it like a local, brush up on tipping etiquette and mark your map with these secret spots.

Where to eat

To get on Lavapiés’s high-energy wavelength, get a jolt of caffeine at Hola Coffee , a third-wave coffeehouse that roasts its own beans for a fruity, complex brew. The optimal sidekick? Warm banana bread dripping with coffee butter.

After your morning hill workout—Lavapiés’s topography is no joke—you’ll be ravenous. Refuel with Senegalese comfort food at Baobab, an indoor-outdoor restaurant on Plaza de Nelson Mandela specializing in seven-euro Thiéboudienne, an umami-rich fish and pumpkin stew ladled over toasty fonio (a West African “super grain”). Competing in the cheap eats category is NAP, Madrid’s hottest pizzeria both literally and figuratively: Its 930-degree oven, bedazzled in urban artist Okuda’s geometric designs , churns out blistered Neapolitan-style pies in under a minute.

With dinner far off—at 10 p.m. if you’re feeling Spanish—a merienda , or mid-afternoon snack, is all but obligatory. Forgo the customary churros con chocolate for Indian pastries at Noman Sweet Shop, a convenience store with an improbably delectable spread of hand-crimped samosas, scraggly pakoras, and cardamom-scented gulab jamun. Take your warm paper bag of goodies across the street to Plaza de la Corrala, and chow down al aire libre .

Locals meet for beers and impromptu jam sessions on the steps of Plaza de Agustín Lara.

As evening approaches, Madrileños flock to Lavapiés to partake in the neighborhood’s quintessential pastime, the tapeo , or tapas crawl. First, stop at Antonio Sánchez, a creaky tavern founded in 1786, where realist painter Ignacio Zuloaga, champion bullfighters, and King Alfonso XIII once rubbed shoulders, and order a sudsy caña , or half-pint, at the zinc bar. Although each drink comes with a complimentary canapé, save your appetite for Los Chuchis , a market-driven gastrobar where handwritten menus feature soul-satisfying dishes like dilly salmon croquettes and baked feta with roasted tomatoes and chilies.

Around the corner is vinoteca and restaurant La Falda , worth a visit for its juicy, paprika-dusted octopus alone; it sings alongside a glass of citrusy xarello, a rare Catalan varietal. Still peckish? Melo’s churns out golden, ultra-creamy ham croquetas until 1 a.m.

Where to shop

Every Sunday, the sloping Ribera de Curtidores transforms into one of Europe’s liveliest flea markets, El Rastro. Skip the stalls hawking cheap tchotchkes and souvenirs and instead weave your way south toward Plaza del General Vara del Rey, where antique dealers lay out Franco-era dinnerware, ornate pocket watches, and other curious collectibles. Photography buffs could spend hours at nearby Fotocasión , a three-floor temple to photography that sells analog cameras and hard-to-find film types alongside the latest technology. Readers, on the other hand, can buy used books by the kilo at La Casquería , which occupies a defunct butcher stall in Mercado de San Fernando.

Where to drink

Madrileños love to drink outdoors, but it’s not always easy to snag a table in Lavapiés, whose miles of street-side terrazas fill up fast on warm evenings. Here’s a secret: An unassuming entryway at 31 Calle Doctor Fourquet belies a hidden courtyard café, Sala Mirador , that gets all the sun and half the crowds of the typical neighborhood spots. After gulping down an ice-cold Mahou, the classic Madrid beer, sip something more eclectic at Bendito Vinos y Vinillos , a wine bar that pours palate-bending natural wines such as an amber muscat by Microbodega de Alumbro, of which only 450 bottles were produced.

Catch a live performance at Sala Julgar, one of Madrid’s last non-touristy flamenco venues.

Then, when you’ve got a nice buzz going, catch a live performance at Sala Juglar , one of Madrid’s last non-touristy flamenco venues, or let loose to ’80s and ’90s rock hits at El Grillo Afónico, where Lavapiés locals meet for cocktails and impromptu dance parties. Scenesters who know their EDM from their deep house can find like-minded revelers at Club 33 , a bumping discoteca where the lights don’t turn on until 6 a.m.—at which point, why bother going home? The cafés will be opening soon anyway, and you’ve only scratched the surface of what this multifaceted neighborhood has to offer.

  • The Best Tapas Restaurants In...

The Best Tapas Restaurants in and Around Lavapiés, Madrid

Lavapiés is one of Madrid’s most interesting neighbourhoods, a multicultural warren of little streets that contain a tantalising array of tapas bars, from old neighbourhood classics to modern spots offering a creative spin on tapas. We take a look at some of the best tapas bars in and around Lavapiés.

1. taberna antonio sánchez.

Restaurant, Spanish

Taberna Antonio Sánchez

The wooden walls and marble-topped tables have changed little since this tavern opened its doors in 1830. It was founded by the bullfighter Antonio Sánchez, and its walls bear the marks of the tradition: photos of old bullfighters sit side by side with stuffed bulls heads. Today, it is known for its array of traditional tapas dishes, from meatballs and oxtail to croquettes and torrijas , a Spanish version of French toast that is popular at Easter.

2. Taberna El Sur

Croquettes

The wildly popular little tapas bar does a range of simple tapas to a high standard, and the staff are friendly and welcoming. While it is popular with locals, it is unmistakably a tourist favourite, but that shouldn’t put you off. Its walls are covered in film posters by Spanish great Pedro Almódovar and there’s a laid-back feel. Grab a seat at the bar or a table in the back and order a range of tasty tapas inspired by Spain and Latin America. The ropa vieja (Cuban shredded beef) is melt-in-the-mouth delicious, while the mushroom croquettes will leave you wanting more.

3. La Berenjena

Bar, Restaurant, Spanish

5. La Barca del Patio

La Barca del Patio is a taste of Andalusia in the heart of Madrid. The white interiors feature Andalusian touches such as a huge photo of the Alhambra in Granada and an Andalusian-style fountain. The bar is particularly popular for its fish and seafood, which is cooked over an open fire in the shape of a little boat. Andalusian specialities include tortillitas de camarones (prawn fritters) from Cádiz , a range of fried fish and salmorejo , a cold tomato coup from Córdoba .

Paella is a regional speciality from Valencia

Another Rastro favourite, AlliOli is not strictly a tapas bar but it does offer one of Spain’s most emblematic dishes: paella . The modern café cooks up huge pans of the Valencian rice dish that diners can order by the portion (a good option if you want to avoid a formal, sit-down experience where you have to order a whole paella). It’s a bargain option, too, with portions of paella for around €5. It can get very busy as the afternoon wears on, so aim to get there early (around 12.30pm) to grab a table.

7. Tribuetxe

This little bar is a wonderful mix of Basque and Andalusian influences. It specialises in pintxos , Basque tapas that consist of delicious morsels of food, usually served perched on a piece of bread. It’s a local favourite with a buzzing atmosphere, tasty wines and a range of creative, award-winning pintxos including fried prawn skewers, steak with aubergine and fried aubergine covered in molasses.

Holly Hits the Road

Madrid by Barrio: Ultimate Guide to Restaurants in Lavapiés

Madrid is a massive city and I found myself in a barrio (neighborhood) wishing I had a clear guide to the best restaurants in that specific area. I chose to start with the barrio I knew best, Lavapiés. This food guide to the restaurants in Lavapiés will make finding the perfect restaurant that much easier.

This article may contain affiliate links through associate programs. If you purchase an item using one of my links I will receive a small commission, with no extra cost to you.

Places to Stay in Lavapiés

Ok, Hostel Madrid Is the best and most affordable option near Lavapiés. It has so much to offer its guests, including affordable prices, an in-house bar, cultural events, and easy access to Madrid’s City Center.

Service in Restaurants

Many Americans are quick to point out the “poor service” when they go to a restaurant in Spain. Food service in Spain is noticeably slower than it is in America. This is simply due to their culture. Spaniards enjoy long meals with rich conversation and good company. Here it is rude for the servers to be constantly checking in and interrupting the conversation. If you need your server, you will have to wave them down. When it is time to pay the bill, be sure to ask because it’s rude in Spaniards culture to assume you’re ready to leave.

Mealtimes in Spain:

Mealtimes are very different in Spain than they are in America. Most restaurants do not offer dinner service until after 8 pm. Many restaurants close midday to observe siesta time. That being said, make sure to check the restaurant’s hours prior to just showing up and expecting to eat. Flexibility is key when going out to eat in Spain.

Typical Mealtimes in Spain:

Breakfast: 7:00 am – 9:00 am (Brunch goes later)

Mid Morning Snack: 10:30am – 12:00am

Lunch: 1:30 pm – 4:30 pm

Afternoon snack : 5:00 pm – 7:00pm

Tapas: 7:00pm – 9:00 pm

Dinner: 9:30- 11:00 pm (Most restaurants do not open for dinner service until 8:00 pm at the earliest)

Best Cafés in Lavapiés

Café santay:.

Calle de Embajadores, 5 Local derecho, 28012 Madrid, Spain

I was lucky enough to have Café Santay ten steps from my front door! This simple bakery offers amazing pastries and quality coffee. I would constantly pick up their flakey croissants and empanadas for a quick snack. Their café con Leche was always great, and they offer FREE WIFI to customers!

Plaza de Cascorro, 20, 28005 Madrid, Spain

Pan Adoré is a cute little café that I consider one of the best cafés/ restaurants in Lavapiés.

This was the first café I visited when I moved into the neighborhood and it is a great one!

Pan Adoré offers several pastries, bagel sandwiches, veggie burgers, and more. The interior is cute and inviting.

This is the perfect spot to grab a café con Leche and get some work done on your laptop, as they have free Wifi.

Makis Coffee Shop

Calle de Embajadores, 56, 28012 Madrid, Spain

Makis Coffee Shop offers specialty coffee and tea. Here you can find not only hot coffee but you can also find iced coffee drinks (which are a rarity in Madrid). If you are looking for an iced latté, frappé, or matcha latté this is the place for you. It has great relaxing vibes and heartier food than most cafés. On their menu, you can find delicious sweet cakes and savory loaded toasts. At night this café also serves beer and pizzas. This is one of my favorite cafés in the neighborhood!

Best Brunch Restaurants in Lavapiés

Pum pum café.

Calle de Tribulete, 6, 28012 Madrid, Spain

Pum Pum is a cute eclectic café with phenomenal food. Their Shakshuka alone makes Pum Pum one of the best restaurants in Lavapiés.

Pum Pum Café is a name you’ll probably recognize if you are familiar with the food scene in Madrid. Trust me, it is worth the hype.

They offer iced coffee, fresh-pressed juices, and delicious café con leches. In addition, they serve fantastic food. Their menu offers avocado toast, eggs benedict, and an out-of-this-world shakshuka. All of which are served with warm, locally made grainy slices of bread.

No matter the time of day, expect a wait to be seated.

LAP Bar Café

Calle de Embajadores, 19, 28012 Madrid, Spain

LAP is a lesser-known spot, that offers one of the best brunch deals in the city. My favorite thing on the menu is the mix and match eggs benedict. You can select two different styles of eggs benedict, all of which are served on a fluffy, warm bun! The staff here is friendly and very accommodating to dietary restrictions!

Adorado Bar

Calle del Mesón de Paredes, 22, 28012 Madrid, Spain

Adorado is a quaint brunch restaurant in Lavapiés. It has amazing window seats, delicious eggs benedict and cozy decor.

You can always count on Adorado for a good meal! Their space is so cozy, it makes you want to camp out here all day long. In addition, they have an adorable covered patio space that is great on a sunny day!

My go-to order is a Café Bombón which is espresso with sweetened condensed milk, and eggs benedict.

They also have a really tasty bagel breakfast sandwich that is topped with egg, ham, avocado, tomato, and cheese. I am a big fan of Adorado’s brunch and all the options they have to offer!

Plántate: Better Coffee & Brunch

Calle del Mesón de Paredes, 28, 28012 Madrid, Spain

Just a few doors down from Adorado is Plántate . Its exposed brick walls and jungle of lush green plants make this one of the most photogenic restaurants in Lavapiés. They claim to be 50% Vegano, meaning they have as many vegan options as they do non-vegan options. All of which are excellent. Specialty coffees are their area of expertise, occasionally they even offer a pumpkin spice latte!

Mamúa Café Bar

Plaza de Cascorro, 7, 28005 Madrid, Spain

The Brunch bowls from Mamúa are to die for. They are packed full of hearty ingredients that stick with you all day long. For this reason I consider it to have one of the best brunches.

Mamúa Café is one of my favorite brunch restaurants in Lavapiés. El Rastro traffic makes it very difficult to get into on a Sunday. NO WORRIES, they are open for brunch every day of the week, and the food is wonderful!

They offer a substantial three-course brunch. The first course includes your coffee or tea and an option of yogurt and granola or fresh fruit. Course 2 is a selection of Cake, croissant, or cookie, and the final course is your choice of a breakfast bowl.

I love the Panebol Tierra which is filled with Avacado, braised beef, arugula, sweet potatoes, a Poached egg, and their special sauce. Delicious! If you have dietary restrictions they also offer Vegan brunch and Gluten-Free brunch.

Nomade Cafe

Calle de los Tres Peces, 22, 28012 Madrid, Spain

Nomade Cafe has everything you are looking for in a brunch spot. Their space is stylish and their food is incredible. They offer a variety of different types of dishes including many vegetarian-friendly options. Honestly, their breakfast skillets are to dies for! Be sure to check out this incredible brunch restaurant in Lavapiés

Best Lunch Restaurants in Lavapiés, Madrid

Calle de Embajadores, 9, 28012 Madrid, Spain

Bar Pavón is classic. Complete with iconic touches and Art Deco inspiration. It is the perfect place to enjoy a Bocata and caña.

Historic Bar Pavón is busy all times of day, and I can see why. They have the best bocatas in the city.

This is the Carne Loca Bocata and it is my absolute favorite. It is on the spicy side but, the heat was a pleasant surprise.

Established as a local staple in 1924, the interior is so classically Madrid.

Fun fact: the bar has actually been used as a filming location multiple times! Most recently it is one of the settings in a major motion picture, The Vault

El Rincón Guay

Calle de Embajadores, 62, 28005 Madrid, Spain

El Rincón Guay is a great spot for an affordable and quality lunch. They have Hamburgers on their menu for as little as 5.00 Euros. They have a large selection of hamburgers and sandwiches as well as lighter foods such as Pinchos or salads. Additionally, they have several vegetarian-friendly options. You’ll recognize it from its constantly full patio and vibrant mural.

Mercado de San Fernando

Embajadores 41 Mercado de San Fernando, Calle de Embajadores, 28012 Madrid, Spain

The Mercado de San Fernando is a hub of restaurants in Lavapiés. Many stalls with many different cuisines.Enjoy a delicious craft beer here.

Mercado de San Fernando is one of my favorite markets of the many you can find in Madrid. This market sells everything from books, to produce, to craft beer.

Here you have the option of many different food stalls offering cuisines from all over the world. To accompany the Spanish tapas, you can also find Sushi, Chilean cuisine, Ceviche, Tacos, and much more. It is a perfect place to go if your group can’t decide on one type of food, because you can have it all!

I love to stop into La Buena Pinta for a pint of local craft beer!

Restaurante Preity Raj

Calle del Ave María, 29, 28012 Madrid, Spain

Preity Raj is a great place to enjoy Tikka Masala on their patio.

Lavapies is known for its cultural diversity and is reflected in its food. If you want any sort of Indian Cuisine, this is where you should go. Of the several Indian restaurants I have tried in Lavapies, my favorite is Restaurante Preity Raj .

I have found that they offer the best food for the best price, and you will never leave hungry.

They have a large outdoor patio set up and it is a great location to soak up some sun and enjoy good food!

Best Dinner Restaurants in Lavapiés, Madrid

Taberna el sur.

Calle de la Torrecilla del Leal, 12, 28012 Madrid, Spain

Taberna Mas Al Sur : Calle de Santa Isabel, 35, 28012 Madrid, Spain

Steak topped with cherry and goat cheese is one of my favorite dishes from my favorite restaurant in Lavapiés, Taberna El Sur.

Taberna El Sur is a favorite amongst visitors, ex-pats, and locals, and is ALWAYS crowded. Meaning, there is ALWAYS a wait. However, It is worth the wait. In my opinion, it is the best restaurant in Lavapiés.

Luckily they also have a second location, not far from the first. Taberna Mas al Sur offers the same menu items and atmosphere, but oftentimes less of a wait.

Taberna El Sur offers elevated Spanish classics with a twist. They have incredible paella and croquetas, However, the chef’s specials are where you can really find your favorite dishes. They are always outstanding!

Baobab Senegalese

Calle de los Cabestreros, 1, 28012 Madrid, Spain

Baobab always comes highly recommended by locals. They offer traditional Senegalese cuisine that is beloved by the residents of the surrounding neighborhood. Their patio and interior are always full of happy customers. Located directly on Plaza Nelson Mandela, this is where you can truly find the flavor of Lavapiés.

Currently, Baobab is closed due to COVID, but I and many others are hoping for its reopening.

La Buga del Lobo

Calle de Argumosa, 11, 28012 Madrid, Spain

La Buga del Lobo has a fantastic atmosphere, every inch of their space is decorated with vibrant murals. For its menu and décor, the restaurant pulls from several different cultures and cuisines. You can see a mix of Castellano cuisine, with a Caribbean twist. It is a great spot for tropical cocktails, good food, and good vibes! This is one restaurant in lavapiés where you can see the blending of cultures.

NAP Neapolitan Authentic Pizza- Lavapiés

C. del Ave María, 19, 28012 Madrid, Spain

NAP Pizza is traditional Italian Style and so delicious!

NAP is one of my favorite Pizzerias in the city. They do have several locations, however, if you are in Lavapiés be sure to check their Calle del Ave. Maria location out!

My mouth waters thinking of this perfectly crafted Italian-style pizza.

A personal favorite of mine is their pizza that includes fresh Truffles. It is absolutely to die for!

Calle del Salitre, 45, 28012 Madrid, Spain

La Nobia plays with cuisine fusion in the best way imaginable. The chefs combine classically Madrid cuisines with international flavors. They offer all your favorites, tortilla, fried eggplant, and patata bravas with the most unexpected twists. Its elevated food and atmosphere make La Nobia a perfect location for a date night or a girls’ night out.

Taberna Antonio Sánchez

Calle del Mesón de Paredes, 13, 28012 Madrid, Spain

Taberna Antonio Sánchez is the oldest Taberna in Madrid which opened its doors in 1768. The taberna has been open so long it is now an integral piece of Madrid culture and a great place to enjoy dinner. Consequently, it is always busy and I would highly recommend making a reservation. You can do so via their website .

La Encomienda

Calle de la Encomienda, 19, 28012 Madrid, Spain

The Best Veggie burger around. Check out the vegan menu at La Encomienda. The eclectic restaurant offers delicious fare like this veggie burger.

Vegan or Vegetarian? La Encomienda will soon become your new favorite restaurant in Lavapies. My roommate was vegetarian and we quickly became regulars here. Even as a “meat-eater,” I enjoy eating here. We especially love their veggie burger which was full of flavor!

Taberna Tirso de Molina

Plaza de Tirso de Molina, nº 9, 28012 Madrid, Spain

Nothing like Fancy Chicken fingers from a restaurant older than your parents. The best restaurants in Lavapiés are the classics.

Located directly on the flower-filled plaza of Tirso de Molina. Taberna Tirso de Molina has been a staple in the heart of Madrid Centro for the past 40 years. It fills up fast so I would definitely recommend making reservations.

It is finished with rich and intricately carved woods and painted tiles. Nothing feels more Spanish.

Its classically Spanish cuisine is a consistent crowd-pleaser. It is a great place to bring visiting family and friends, to give them an authentic Spanish cuisine experience.

Daily market fresh food, amazing ambiance, and a convenient location work together to make this an unforgettable dining experience.

Calle de Embajadores, 28, 28012 Madrid, Spain

PIZZA, PIZZA, PIZZA! Éccolo is known for its sleek design and Neapolitan-style pizza. They make their pizza in a brick oven with all-natural ingredients and it’s SO good! If you are in the mood for a pizza without all the grease, this is the perfect location. Eccolo also serves local craft beers and cocktails!

Antigua Taquería Lavapiés

Calle de los Cabestreros, 4, 28012 Madrid, Spain

Gooey and cheesy Nachos this good are hard to find in Madrid. But Antigua Taqueria is the best Mexican restaurant in Lavapiés.

JUST LOOK AT ALLLLLL THAT CHEEEEESE! Antigua Taqueria is a small but well-designed space, that offers all the TEX MEX vibes.

I highly recommend their nachos and margaritas. Good margaritas can be difficult to find in Madrid, but their many flavors of margaritas never disappoint.

Still hungry? Try out their tacos, burritos, and quesadillas, and other TEX Mexican cuisine for a reasonable price. This is one of the best Tex-mex restaurants in lavapiés.

Best Bars in Lavapiés, Madrid

Tapas y fotos.

Calle del Dr. Piga, 7, 28012 Madrid, Spain

Vibrant Red walls contrast perfectly with the black and white photo collage behind the bar. The atmosphere makes this bar one of the best in Lavapiés.

Tapas y Fotos is a hidden gem. We stumbled upon it during the fiestas de lavapiés. The bar is decorated with black and white photographs taken of interesting places and people around Madrid. All of which were taken by the owner.

I really enjoyed admiring all the photos while enjoying a cold beer.

Chinaski Lavapiés

Calle de la Fe, 19, 28012 Madrid, Spain

Captivating, vibrant artwork on every wall of Chinaski Lavapiés make this atmosphere unique to most in the area. The Atmosphere and large selection of craft beers are what put Chinaski on the list of best bars and restaurants in Lavapiés.

Tired of Mahou? Looking for some quality craft beer? This is the place for you. Chinaski has an array of local and international craft beers on tap. The graffiti-style murals and friendly staff make for a great atmosphere.

Bar Pavón's vibrant exterior, and large patio area make it unique. The locals pouring out at all times of day make it a staple in the neighborhood.

Bar Pavón has great food and offers an amazing nightlife. At night the bar is always spilling over with locals enjoying vermouth (on tap) or their delicious mojitos.

Bar Pavón is a local favorite, and a great place to hang out if you want to befriend some madrileños.

La Tienda de la Cerveza – Craft Beer Bar

Calle de las Maldonadas, 5, 28005 Madrid, Spain

La Tienda de la Cerveza is a craft beer store turned into a tap room. They offer 15 different Spanish craft beers on tap and tapas dishes to enjoy with your table. Although it’s technically in La Latina, this bar is still a neighborhood favorite. It is always packed with happy customers!

Best Dessert in Lavapiés, Madrid

Mamá elba heladería.

Calle de la Ruda, 15, 28005 Madrid, Spain

Best Dessert in Lavapiés is Mamá Elba with dietary friendly desserts. The Lemon and Strawberry Ice Cream combo is so pretty and so delicious.

Mamá Elba quickly became my favorite ice cream shop in the city. They offer unique flavored artisan ice cream. Not only do they offer over 50 flavors of ice cream, but they also create the most delicious cakes, waffles, and crepes.

Unlike most dessert shops they offer goodies to satisfy all dietary restrictions, including Ice cream and sweets that are gluten-free, sugar-free, and Vegan options.

You will not regret stopping into this wonderful dessert shop!

What is Tapapiés?

Tapapiés is an annual event that takes place around the neighborhood. Many local restaurants in Lavapiés (usually over 90) create tapas for the community to enjoy. Most tapas range between 1.50-2.50 euros. It is the perfect opportunity to try food from a large portion of restaurants in the area.

In addition to the food and drinks being offered for a special price, there are also community events. These include live concerts, art exhibitions, and dance performances, which take place in community spaces or in plazas around the neighborhood.

When is Tapapiés?

Tapapiés typically takes place from October 17-27th every year. Tapapiés 2020 did not happen due to the pandemic. Tapapiés resumed in 2021. Hopefully, the restaurants in Lavapiés will be able to safely continue the event in 2022!

For more information about Tapapiés check out their official website.
