No single supplement for solo women travellers, but act fast!

With the growth of women over 50 travel, river cruise companies are changing their pricing models to attract the mature solo traveller. The most recent is JourneyWoman Women’s Travel Directory partner Uniworld Boutique River Cruises, which is waiving the single supplement on some of its most popular European itineraries, including trips to Italy , Germany , France , and many more .

Adapting to long stay trend among women over 50

Women-friendly river cruise companies

We do not promote travel on large ocean cruise ships, such as the newly launched 10,000 person Icon of the Seas given its impact on small islands, communities and the environment. According to Bryan Comer, director of the Marine Program at the International Council on Clean Transportation, taking a cruise generates “ about double the amount of total greenhouse gas emissions ” as flying.  

As you consider your budget, remember that tipping is generally not included in the price, and there may be additional costs such as dockage fees. It’s also important to check the single room dimensions, bed sizes and availability before booking. Take the time to look at the photographs and make sure this is what you want. Many of the ships offer roommate matching. If in doubt, use a travel agent who specializes in river cruising to book your cruise to get the lowest cost and best advice. You’ll also want to purchase travel insurance ideally from a travel advisor or independent of the cruise line.

Uniworld has a "no single supplement" offer on some of its upcoming cruises, and some of the prices are very attractive. However, I am wondering if I will feel at all uncomfortable on Uniworld as I am not a great one for dressing up (don't own anything approaching an evening or cocktail dress) and am a non-drinker. Obviously, I smatern up a bit in the evenings but it doesn't matter how good the price is if I am going to feel underdressed, especially in the evenings. I've read the "stickies" and looked at Uniworld's website but I would appreciate any views/experience that anyone has on what it's like to travel with Uniworld.

I sailed Uniworld twice. I never brought a dress of any kind as I hardly ever weat them. I brought a pair of nicer black pants and I have a light silk jacket that I wear over a black t-shirt when I want to dress up. On other evenings I wore my usual tops which are basically patterned t-shirts.

I agree with gnome12.  I have also sailed with Uniworld and I don't bring dresses with me on any cruises. I am just not a "dress gal". The photos on lines are showing you the decor of each riverboat but the dress code? Has nothing to do with the decor.  

River Cruises are not what I consider (and many others do as well) they are not a "dressy experience".

I also bring pants (black ones LOL) and tops.  I may wear jeans during the day and change into my black slacks for dinner.  Yes, and different tops.  

I would not worry about being underdressed. A pair of pants and top/pullover/blouse/etc.....will be just fine.

And I saw some of those sailings with no single supplements too! Looking to find one for this summer 🙂

I’ve sailed on Uniworld three times and have a cruise booked for April. Like gnome and Lois, I’ve never brought anything dressy with me. During the day I have dressed very casually, and in the evenings I have typically worn pants or leggings with a tunic or nice blouse. I, too, have never even packed a dress. Unless you show up in shorts and a T-shirt and flip-flops for dinner, I doubt you will feel underdressed. 😉 ETA: The trip I booked for this spring is one of the solo specials. Those prices are terrific!

No secret… Just the specific cruises where they have waived the single supplement.

I've done 3 solo cruises on uniworld and  taken advantage of the solo discount on all of them.  I echo what the others have posted.  I've never worn a cocktail dress or evening gown when river cruising.  Usually black pants and a nice top or tunic. 

There is no pressure to drink alcohol.  In fact, on my last uniworld cruise, the cruise director shared that he was a recovering alcoholic. 

There were several solo sailors on all of my river cruises. 

There's a $100 - $200 discount for previous passengers, but it's not a secret.  Do tell,  what is a secret squirrel???  🐿

Yes, there are multiple cruises on the Uniwolrd website that have a waived single supplement. If you click on  "offers" on the Homepage, one choice is "Waived Single Supplements" and there are quite a few choices. 

There are no secrets of any kind involved.

Good to know about there being other solo travellers. There are usually a handful or so, especially if there has been a special offer of reduced or no single supplements. I can find it daunting to be continually initiating conversations, seeking out dining companions.

Secret squirrel means something only known to the initiated, usually in a clique or some other closed group. At least, that's what it means to my generation. I understand that it means something quite different to much younger people 😳

My cousin and I are taking advantage of the no single supplement and $1000 discount for an Enchanting Danube cruise in April.  Not quite as good as my deal on Viva last year but I felt it was reasonably priced.

A trip to delight any Classicist, culinary enthusiast, or simply the culturally curious, this 4-day stay in Athens offers a brief and wonderful taste of Greece’s famous capital city. Your luxury hotel in the heart of town will be the perfect jumping point for the exciting experiences we have planned for you, including dinner with a local in their home, a trip up to the Parthenon, and a foodie tour of popular Greek treats.

Day to Day:

Day 1: Athens FEATURED EXCURSION: Home-Hosted Dinner Once you have collected your luggage and exited the baggage claim area, you will be greeted by a Uniworld representative and transferred to the hotel. There you will check in, drop off your bags, and, if you wish, go out and explore the city on your own. Your Uniworld local host can offer suggestions for your leisure time. Athens, the capital of Greece, boasts a plethora of excellent museums and galleries, historical cobbled streets, tavernas and cafes, and colorful shops and street vendors, all on your doorstep.

In the evening, you will be transferred to a local home to experience some famous Greek hospitality—locally known as philoxenia —whilst dining on traditional dishes and learning of life in Athens from your wonderful host.

Day 2: Athens FEATURED EXCURSION: Highlights of Athens City Tour After enjoying a wonderful breakfast at your hotel, meet your driver and expert guide and depart to explore Athens and its iconic monuments. Today’s experience includes an abundance of highlights: stop at the Panathinaikos stadium used to host the first modern Olympic games in 1898, view the colossal ruins of the Temple of Zeus, visit the mighty Acropolis and the stunning Acropolis Museum, and continue on to take in views of the vibrant capital.

The rest of the day is at leisure to explore the city further. May we suggest relaxing in one of the many atmospheric street cafes?

Day 3: Athens FEATURED EXCURSION: Taste of Greece Walking Tour Experience Athens today through its tastes, sounds, and sites on a guided walking tour of the city center and its markets. The day starts close to Syntagma square, where you will have the opportunity to try fragrant Greek coffee, traditionally brewed on hovoli —heated sand. Stop at a favorite historical bakery to taste the famous Greek spanakopita before continuing on to the central market area of Athens. Try local tidbits, such as olives, fragrant cheeses, and cured meats at various vendors selling their produce.

Greek cuisine is enriched with wonderfully aromatic herbs and spices, and we discover these at little local shops located close to Monastiraki square. Monastiraki, home to the lively flea market, is full of colorful shops selling local crafts and souvenirs. Take a well-deserved break and stop to savor souvlaki —tender marinated meat on skewers with various accompaniments.

Afterwards our stroll takes us to Thission, a great vantage point in historical Athens, boasting stunning views of the Acropolis, the Ancient Agora, and the impeccable temple of Hephaestus. Try a pick me up of a traditional Greek Mountain tea—or, if you prefer, tsipouro , a fiery Greek spirit. Then opt to either stay in the center for some time at leisure or return to the hotel for a lovely afternoon Greek siesta!

Day 4: Athens Your wonderful Athens extension ends today after breakfast, when you will be transferred to Athens airport to catch your onward flight.

Athens & Santorini Post-Cruise Extension

From ancient wonders to sun-kissed island vistas, Greece makes for one truly extraordinary travel destination. Split your stay between Athens and Santorini, each rich in history, culture, excellent cuisine, and awe-inspiring sights. Sample the local fare, including some island-grown wines, and sail around Santorini’s caldera.

Included in your 6-day stay:

• 2 nights at the Divani Caravel in Athens (or similar)
• 3 nights at the Orama Hotel or Majestic Hotel in Santorini (or similar; hotel will be confirmed approximately 45 days prior to arrival)

Day 3: Santorini FEATURED EXCURSION: Santorini Walking Tour with Local Dinner Enjoy breakfast at your hotel in Athens before being transferred to Athens airport. After arriving in Santorini and taking time to settle into your lovely hotel, meet your expert guide in the afternoon and set out for Fira to explore the wonderful capital town of Santorini. You’ll learn about the island’s fascinating history and hear stories of its unique formation. Afterwards, take in a captivating view of the caldera—a bay on the island created by an ancient volcanic eruption.

This evening, taste a tantalizing selection of Santorini dishes at a local restaurant, accompanied by wine from the island. Your evening ends with an included transfer back to your hotel.

Day 4: Santorini FEATURED EXCURSION: Caldera Cruise Today, a truly remarkable experience awaits on a cruise sailing in the world-famous Santorini caldera. Take in its many stunning sights including the hot springs, the Red Beach and the White Beach, and incredible views of the island from the sea. The cruise departs from the picturesque port of Amoudi and is offered either in the morning or afternoon with round trip transfers included. A wonderful meal on board with drinks is included—depending on the time of day this cruise operates; the meal will be either a lunch or a dinner.

Day 5: Santorini FEATURED EXCURSION: Santorini Villages with Wine Tasting After enjoying breakfast at your hotel, together with your expert guide and private driver you’ll discover some of the tranquil villages of Santorini, where the cobblestone streets are filled with vibrant colors, unique architecture, picture perfect blue domes, and whitewashed cubic houses.

Visit the villages of Pyrgos and Emporio and experience traditional Santorini at its best. Afterwards, visit a delightful boutique winery where you will gain an understanding of the special methods of growing grapes and have the chance to sample the distinct varieties that make Santorini wines so unique.

The rest of the day is at leisure to soak up this Cycladic island’s ambience.

Day 6: Santorini Your Greek odyssey comes to an end today, after breakfast be transferred to Santorini’s airport for your onward flight.

Paris Pre-Cruise Extension

No visit to France would be complete without seeing the city that is widely regarded as the most beautiful in the world—Paris. Nothing compares to the charm of its neighborhoods, the grandeur of its awe-inspiring architecture and monuments, or the cosmopolitan elegance of its boulevards. Delve into the delights this magnificent city has to offer, from the Eiffel Tower and the Champs-Élysées to the quaint neighborhood cafés beloved by locals.

Included in your 3-day stay:

• 2 nights at the Hôtel du Louvre (or similar)
• Breakfast daily and all service charges, taxes, and porterage
• Opera Garnier Discovery Walk
• English-speaking expert
• All transfers

Day 1: Paris Once you’ve cleared customs at the Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport, you will be greeted by a Uniworld representative and transferred to the hotel. There you will check in, drop off your bags and, if you wish, go out and explore the city on your own. Your Uniworld local host can offer suggestions for your leisure time.

During the evening, you’ll gather with your fellow guests for an informative briefing at the hotel. Please ask your local host for dinner recommendations.

Day 2: Paris FEATURED EXCURSION: Opera Garnier discovery walk Put on comfortable walking shoes and plan to spend a couple of hours strolling through the geographical heart of Paris. Begin in the 9th arrondissement and the Opéra de Paris Garnier, also known as Palais Garnier. Work on this extravagant opera house began in 1865 and continued for 15 trouble-filled years, which included the discovery of an underground lake beneath the construction site. It’s still there, incidentally—confined to an enormous cistern where carp swim and rescue divers train. Your guide will take you inside to explore this glorious tribute to Second Empire opulence, complete with dazzling chandeliers, red-velvet wall coverings and draperies, gold-leafed cherubs, marble friezes, and a spectacular 20th-century ceiling by Marc Chagall.

Then head out through the 8th arrondissement, exploring the wide avenues and arcades designed by Baron Haussmann when he modernized Paris between 1852 and 1870. As you walk toward the river and the 1st arrondissement, you’ll come to the Palais-Royal, built by Cardinal Richelieu in 1629 (Louis XIV lived here as a child). The palace itself now houses government offices, but the garden offers a lovely breath of fresh air and greenery.

Your next destination, just a block or two away, is La Comédie-Française, the only state theater to have its own troupe—it specializes in the work of Molière— before you loop back toward your hotel, passing the National Library and the Paris Bourse.

Note: Occasionally, the Opera Garnier will not be available for this extension. On such occasions, an alternative experience will be arranged, such as a visit to the Musee d’Orsay or a walking tour of Paris’ popular Le Marais district.

Day 3: Paris Today you transfer to your ship via either TGV train or motorcoach and begin your cruise.
