Come aboard our adults-only cruises for a kids-free getaway at sea.

Children are one of life’s great joys, but on Virgin Voyages, we believe absence makes the heart grow fonder. That’s why, despite the fact that our ships are a playground for your inner child, we’ve chosen to curate an adults-only cruise experience.

Whether you choose to jumpstart the morning with a wheatgrass shot from Gym & Tonic or a Filthy Mary from The Red Bar, you can trust that any path you take will remain unobstructed by little feet. We’re proud of our design-forward eateries and bars and we created them specifically for adults, either for mingling with like-minded adventurers or for cozying up and reconnecting with the person you came aboard with. On top of the spaces themselves being kid-free havens, the menu items served within may also be a little advanced for the average tyke. Between hibachi crudo and filets at The Wake, carpaccio and truffle pasta at Extra Virgin, and mezcal pairings at Pink Agave, we keep our food and drink offerings mature and unexpected.

The adults only lifestyle continues whenever we dock, with pages of Shore Things excursions tailored to sophisticated tastes in sight-seeing and cuisine in every port. While we know every child has a spark of genius, we don’t know many who’d be riveted by (or at least not get restless on) a medieval heritage tour through the white-stoned streets of Dubrovnik. From artisan honey-making in Ajaccio to sampling craft brews in Zeebrugge, every Virgin destination from A to Z boasts activities best enjoyed by those 18 and up.

Once you’re back on the ship after a day of exploration, our boundary-pushing entertainment options will reinforce the wisdom of leaving the kids at home . We’re more “Romeo and Juliet reimagined in a circus” than themed character dinners, if you will; more immersive cabaret than 7 pm movie and jammies. But let’s be clear, being an adult means you vacation however you want. So if being in bed by 7 pm is your idea of the perfect evening, we encourage that.

And with free, reliable Wi-Fi available everywhere on our ships, you’re just a video call away from any little ones you may have left on land.

There you have it: our case for remaining an adult-only cruise experience . Aboard a Virgin Voyage, you can stretch out Lagoon-side with a drink in one hand and a book in the other (how many pages you’ve read is none of our business) without fear of a rogue cannonball spoiling the relaxation. We trust that even our Sailors with children will appreciate not having to explain an onboard ice cream shop called “Lick Me Till Ice Cream.”

Virgin Voyages Review & Complete Guide – Everything You Need to Know!

From the moment you step onto a lady ship, as they call them, you realize virgin is a cruise line like no other..

Virgin Voyages Review & Guide

Virgin Voyages offers a unique and upscale cruise experience with luxurious yacht-inspired ambiance, sophisticated dining options, and stylish cabins. Their ships are all-adult and nearly all-inclusive, covering food, tips, service fees, Wi-Fi, and entertainment in the fare.

Quick Things to Know:

  • Fitness Classes were not bookable until we got on the ship (though, I am unsure if this is standard practice). One of the people in our group was able to connect to the wifi in the terminal during check-in and was able to start booking while in line.
  • Restaurant reservations fill up fast. You may be able to start booking within a week or two of your departure by using the Virgin Voyages app. Once you’ve downloaded the Virgin Voyages app, check to see what date reservations open up and you’re able to book restaurants. You don’t have to wait until you’re on board.
  • Bring something red to wear! The Scarlet Party or Scarlet Night is a red-themed party where everyone dresses up in various red outfits and the ship turns red throughout. Depending on the voyage you may witness all of the lovely red outfits drenched in pool water as people tend to end up taking a dip fully clothed!
  • There’s a pajama party! Bring your best PJs for the fun Pajama Party night. Nothing is off limits, there were ALL types on show from skimpy lingerie, boxer shorts, body suits, robes, and some people wearing almost nothing.

About Virgin Voyages

Virgin Voyages has created something unique, something special. The vibe of the cruise ships instantly comes across as cool but casual. Elegant but not snobby. Modern but not cold or stark. It feels like just the right mix of cool & sexy without an accompanying jackass vibe that usually comes with being cool… and sexy. Virgin Voyages’ vessels distinguish themselves with a luxurious yacht-inspired ambiance, sophisticated dining options, complimentary Wi-Fi, stylish cabins, and wellness-focused activities.

Let’s not forget, the complete absence of children running around touching all the surfaces and licking all the salt shakers.

Everything you need to know about Virgin Voyages Cruises

For experienced cruisers, Virgin Voyages may come as a bit of a sensory overload. Since there aren’t staff members pitching beverage packages, dining packages, or upgrades at every turn, you can immediately start taking it all in and exploring without interruption.

What is immediately apparent is the staff. They are ALSO unlike anything you’ll experience with other cruise lines. Many are tattooed, pierced, and have funky choices of hairstyles (more on this later) though no less friendly… usually.

The Virgin Voyages concept is all-adult and nearly all-inclusive where the fare you pay covers all food, tips, service fees, wifi, entertainment, etc. pretty much leaving only your bar tab & shore excursions to pay for.

This concept, I believe, will be amazingly successful, if they (Virgin) can sort out some problems, which I’m confident they can and will.

Virgin Voyages is Adults Only

The first thing that always comes up about Virgin Voyages is how it’s all adult. This is something that the cruise market has needed for decades. With cruises becoming more affordable and family-oriented, travelers who want an adult-only vacation are limited in choices. Virgin has created a playground for grown-ups to enjoy themselves without having to worry about unsupervised and crying children.

What are the age requirements for Virgin Voyages?

To book a cruise, a passenger must be 18 years old or older.

What is the drinking age on Virgin Voyages?

This should be a black-and-white answer, but it’s grey. The official answer is if you’re sailing from US ports and in US waters, you must be 21 or older, however, in reality, the practice seems to be that 18+ can drink after leaving US waters and on Bimini, in Mexico, etc. The FAQ on the Virgin website contradicts the published alcohol policy of 21+, but at the end of the day it’s what happens on the ship that matters, and in practice, everyone we’ve spoken with has had no issue being 18+ and getting a drink. In fact, it’s rarely even questioned when on board.

Virgin Voyages is nearly all-inclusive

Nearly everything is included when you book a Virgin cruise which includes all food, entertainment, basic beverages, tips, WiFi, and gratuities. It’s nice to go on a cruise and not have a bill at the end of the voyage for a bunch of daily gratuities. It’s also nice to not have tips and gratuities tacked on to every beverage purchase or other miscellaneous purchases. The only things not included are alcoholic beverages, excursions, and nominal port fees. The only other charges you’ll likely encounter will be some specialty meal upgrades such as a tomahawk steak or seafood tower. These are few and far between and are clearly marked on menus.

The Cabins on the cruise ships are modern & comfortable

Once you enter your cabin on one of the Virgin ships, in our case, a Sea Terrace on the Valiant Lady , you’ll quickly realize it just feels fresh, trendy, and “hip” without going overboard (pun intended). Absent in the staterooms are the heavy wood accents and floral carpets you often find on more traditional cruise ships. The rooms and cabins feel modern but not uncomfortable.

The cabins on the Lady Ships feel quite large compared to newer ships with other cruise lines in contrast though, the bathrooms are incredibly small and tight, some of the smallest I’ve ever experienced.

A real game changer in these staterooms is the technology. Virgin Voyages has invested heavily in technology on their ships from start to finish and the cabins are no exception. You’re greeted with a “scene” when you open the door of your cabin which opens all of the curtains and sets the lighting. There is a tablet in the room where you can control the mood lighting, shades, television, and movies, and request service from the cabin steward. The tablet was a little flakey throughout the voyage and messages to the steward got missed on occasion.

The best part of the cabin is the convertible bed/sofa system. Each cabin has a queen bed that converts into a sofa making the space INCREDIBLE and HUGE feeling. The setup is great for the day when you want to relax and watch TV or get some work done and not be forced to sit on the bed. The conversion can be requested by the stateroom attendant and they’ll convert it on their first rounds of the day and make it back to a bed during the evening rounds. I couldn’t tell if the cabin stewards were a bit grumpy when we asked for this conversion service, but they accommodated the request without question. By the middle of the voyage, I had figured out how to convert the bed into a sofa on my own (and there’s a handy little instruction guide on the tablet), but I left it up to the stewards to convert it back to a bed in the evening. It’s important to know, however, that the cabin attendants usually end their day around 7 pm, so if you don’t have your evening service for whatever reason,  you’re going to be making the sofa into a bed on your own!

The real show stopper of the Virgin Voyages cabins ( Sea Terrace and suites with balconies) are the terraces with the beautiful red hammocks. This is a passenger favorite whenever discussing the Virgin Voyages ships. These hammocks are a real treat allowing you to float over the balcony gently swinging in the breeze as the ship is underway. What a clever and innovative design feature for a cruise ship!

In addition to the hammock, the balcony has the traditional table and chairs for seating, but realistically the hammock takes up so much space that it becomes crowded quickly with the other furniture items.

As for storage in the staterooms, because of the converting bed, it’s not possible or practical to put empty bags under the bed, so that all goes into the closet space. The closet area is the only thing that really feels like an afterthought with a cloth curtain as a divider rather than traditional doors. I’m sure it’s a “design feature” but it just makes the room look a little cheap. Otherwise, there is plenty of storage space for any length of cruise (it fits everything for 2 people on a 14-day transatlantic just fine!).  It’s worth noting, that if you need more hangars, just ask, and the cabin steward will bring more for you.

Finally, a nice touch is that you are left with a couple of bottles of water daily in the cabin. One is cooled in the mini-fridge and the other is left out. For those looking for a minibar, it doesn’t exist in the standard balcony cabins / Sea Terrace rooms. In the suites, there are complimentary beverages available.

The Suites on Virgin ships:

There are unique themed suites available on all of the Virgin Voyages ships called the “Rockstar and Mega Rockstar” suites. These are the largest and most expensive accommodations on the ship, but they come with some great perks!

What do you get with a Mega Rockstar Suite?

The most expensive and lavish suites range from 570 sq feet to over 2000 sq feet and are reminiscent of 5-star hotel suites with whirlpools, outdoor jacuzzis, and huge private terraces (depending on the suite). Each suite is adorned with music memorabilia and a record table to spin some tunes. The guests in these suites have exclusive access to Richard’s Rooftop as well as daily spa access. Additional perks are premium wifi, early access to the ships with priority check-in, and transfer to and from the ship to your hotel or airport.

For those Mega RockStar guests who like to indulge, the suite comes with a bottomless mini bar that is restocked at your request as well as essentially an unlimited bar tab to use during the voyage. While Virgin states that there are limits to the bar tab (reasonable), I’ve never spoken to anyone who’s experienced being told they can’t order more.

  • Read : The difference between Rockstar and Mega Rockstar status on Virgin Voyages

What do you get with a Rockstar Suite?

As with the Mega RockStar suites, you have access to the exclusive Richard’s Rooftop, priority boarding, and a stocked minibar (single use, not unlimited). These suites are a bit smaller and range from aft cabins / suites that are a bit more than 400 sq feet to really large corner suites measuring more than 850 sq feet.

Finally, these suites come with a private concierge to help you with bookings, excursions, transportation, etc.

Virgin Voyages Mega RockStar

How much do the RockStar and Mega RockStar suites cost?

Expect to spend $6000 for a 5-7 day RockStar suite and more than $10,000 for the Mega RockStar suite. This is based on pricing for a typical Caribbean 7-day cruise where a SeaTerrace rate was approximately $2900

Activities, Shows & Entertainment on the Virgin Voyages ships

There is an impressive lineup of things to do from early-morning yoga to late-night parties. I expected initially that the ship would be more of a “party” ship with nonstop pool parties and day drinking, but surprisingly, Virgin Voyages has put together a good program and schedule for their cruises that includes many activities that aren’t parties. Of course, there’s more of a party vibe once the sun sets, which adds to the allure of the brand and ship.

During the day, there is a variety of planned activities to do from trivia, games, foodie classes, bingo, and a ton of workouts. (see the sample week-long itinerary below)

Our favorite was the daily trivia where “The Gamer” compiles the best of pop culture, history, current events, and beyond in a multi-round trivia event that he’s uniquely created. Each team will have a booklet to fill out for each round of 10 questions. But this isn’t your average trivia game. The highly curated, weirdly specific genres cater to the weird, the wacky, and the nerdy among us-expanding beyond generations and giving you the freshest, funniest brain-twisters you can find

For people worried about what there is to do during the day on one of these cruises, fear not! There are PLENTY of activities not to mention the obligatory pool time.

The shows and nighttime entertainment

Virgin Voyages has curated a unique lineup of entertainment for each cruise which includes everything from variety and talent show-style entertainment to drag shows and beyond. An example of some of the shows you can expect to see on a Virgin Voyages cruise are:

It’s a Ship Show : Think of this as a dinner show + variety hour with some live music, comedy, and random performances. The food was included but was slightly disappointing, but overall it was good fun. Note: If you are in the front row(s), there is audience participation and you may be called upon!

A Ship Show Virgin Voyages

Duel Reality : Seen in the Red Room, this is part dance performance and part theater. It’s “strange” but worth the effort to see. Important to know: once you are seated, you cannot leave for any reason (bathroom, drinks, etc).

Untitled Danceshow Thing : Think of this as ship performers in a nightclub filming an influencer-inspired show. None of the people in our group quite got the purpose. This is the only show on the ship(s) that I wouldn’t recommend going out of your way to experience unless you had nothing else to do.

There are other acts and shows that cycle throughout the voyage, and they’re all different than anything else you’ve likely seen on a cruise, so give them a try!

In addition to the production-style shows that are held within the Manor and Red Room, there are always musicians or DJs scattered throughout the ship that are all quite good. Most bars and lounges have various types of live music featuring solo artists to multi-piece bands.

The inclusion of music on the ship is in the DNA of the Virgin brand and it creates a wonderful vibe day and night.

**Note** The evening entertainment is going through some changes and new shows are being added. We’ll update this as the programs are announced and confirmed.

Virgin Cruise Ships are a Health & Wellness anomaly at sea with fitness classes unmatched by other cruise lines

You’ve probably never seen a cruise ship that has such a focus on wellness! Most traditional cruisers go for the bottomless buffet, all-day ice cream, and beverage packages, whereas Virgin Voyages has put a substantial effort into balancing those activities with an abundance of wellness & fitness classes – ALL INCLUDED! Yep, that’s right, the wellness and exercise classes are all part of the fare.

The ships have professional instructors dedicated to certain activities and classes, for example:

Spin Class – only about 6 people at a time and for someone who’s into spin classes, they are relatively beginner-level.

Bungee Class – low-impact bungee cord workout. Unusual but fun use of bungee cords for balance and stretching.

Yoga – There are several varieties of yoga but the best was the Low impact, a guided class where beginners didn’t feel out of place.

HIIT Class – Outdoors on deck 16 in the outdoor gym area.

For passengers who are interested in doing their own thing, there are plenty of options with a sports court/basketball court, outdoor workout areas, outdoor gym area, and post-workout chillout spaces.

Another standout feature of the Virgin Voyages cruise ships is the beautiful cardio space full of the latest Technogym equipment. It’s fully integrated with Apple Watch and the “My Wellness” app by Technogym for syncing your workout data. In a separate space across from the pool is the weight lifting and workout space, equally impressive. There’s nothing you can’t do in the gym and cardio rooms, they are some of the nicest and best-equipped gyms I’ve seen, much less those at sea!

For passengers who are looking for an outdoor run, there’s the running track on deck 17.

Cardio & Gym on Virgin Voyages

The pool decks on Virgin Voyages ships

There are two pools on the Virgin ships referred to as the “Aquatic Club”. These pool areas are what most passengers lament about. The consensus is that the pool and sun decks are WAY too small for the passenger capacity. In reality, we found that there were always loungers to be found and a place to soak in the sun was never a problem. I can only guess that it’s because there is so much to do on the ships that people don’t lay around the pool all day as they would while on a typical cruise ship.

The main pool is more like an oversized plunge pool surrounded by loungers and day beds with music playing all day long while the smaller pool towards the rear of the pool deck is quiet and more of an oversized jacuzzi whirlpool.

The pools and pool decks on board the Virgin Voyages ships are much more intimate and have a day club feel about them than the sprawling pool decks that are now common on mega-ships.

The Redemption Spa

The spa & thermal suite is always something I look forward to on a modern cruise ship. This is one of the areas where I feel like Virgin Voyages has failed. That sentiment wasn’t unique to me, however, some people loved it. So let’s explain:

If you are used to the glamorous spas and the thermal suite on other mass-market cruise lines, you’ll likely be disappointed. The Redemption Spa is beautiful like the rest of the ship, but it is like a nice piece of art, where it is ok to look at but doesn’t offer much else. While they have amenities that look like they stack up to other spas at sea, they are impractical and downright uncomfortable. For example, where you would normally find heated stone loungers in modern spas, Virgin Voyages has chosen to heat a floor space, like a large swath of marble heated in which you are supposed to just lay on. I liken this to lying on the ground at some Roman monument in the summer, not at all comfortable.

Additionally, the whirlpool tubs are small, so small in fact that you better be really comfortable with whoever is sharing it with you because it’s “intimate” to say the least. While there is a plunge pool, it’s room temperature and it’s also extremely small.

There are the typical sauna and steam rooms you’d expect in any modern spa, and they are what they are. Very basic.

The most unique room is the mud room where you slather buckets of mud all over your body and sit there like a hog fresh out of the mud pit. Not only is it weird, but they, unfortunately, don’t clean it often or very well, meaning it looks like it could be the backdrop of a high-end mud wrestling tournament.

Finally, the booking process for this spa was overly complicated and poorly managed. You are only able to block 3 hours at a time and you are required to use time all within those three hours, so you can’t come and go throughout the day.

Another real turn-off was the fact that if you chose to purchase a service like a massage, you weren’t able to use the spa area as a part of that service. It seems petty to not allow people who are already paying an exorbitant rate for a massage, you’d think that using the steam room before or after would be included.

Redemption Spa Virgin Voyages Valiant Lady

Our group found the spa so generally unappealing, that even though we were comped anytime access for our entire voyage, most of us only used it once while some of the ladies used it two or three times at most.

What does the day pass cost for the Redemption Spa?

The costs: $39 – But first, it’s worth noting that the “day pass” is really only a 3-hour pass for use during one day. The price is not outrageous but not an amazing value either. For a spa person, it’s worth checking out. You can also get a day pass included if you buy some packages such as the “Splash of Romance” Package.

Some passengers have said they’ve been able to purchase a come-and-go pass for the full day for $70. This option may vary by ship and itinerary.

A full voyage pass was available to us for a 3-hour time block once per day during the cruise, but that price wasn’t published (and I forgot to ask). I was told that this offering was being tested and wasn’t necessarily going to be available in the future.

This is how Virgin Voyages explains its spa:

Inspired by an underwater cave, Redemption Spa is a luxury hideaway complete with a hydrotherapy pool, mud room, salt room, cold plunge pools, quartz beds, and a myriad of rejuvenating treatments. Strategically located far from the bustle of the fitness areas, you won’t be mid-massage hearing a nearby cycling instructor telling you to “push through the last climb.” Virgin Voyages

How much are spa services in the Redemption Spa on Virgin Voyages?

Every service you could imagine was available at the Redemption Spa and they come at a pretty steep price. You can see the entire list of services from the Red Book found in the cabins (see here).

A traditional Swedish massage is $179 for 50 minutes and $229 for 75 minutes.  A deep tissue massage is $379 for 50 minutes or $469 for 75 minutes (yes, you’re reading that right) Bamboo massage is $209 for 50 minutes and $249 for 75 minutes. A 50-minute facial is $179 – $229 depending on the variety

There are other massages & services available, but this gives you an idea of what to expect when planning for your spa treatments

Dining is all specialty and it’s all included with no main dining room to be found

Absent are traditional specialty restaurants, a main dining room, and high cover charges. Virgin Voyages made the choice to have all specialty dining options or themed dining included in the cruise fare. This is by far the biggest part of the “all-inclusive” concept that Virgin has going for them. It’s a great concept and the restaurants are all amazing with a high-quality dining experience in each location.

Only one reservation per restaurant

Virgin Voyages has a policy to allow one reservation per restaurant per voyage (at dinner). This is in an effort to make sure every passenger or “sailor” has the opportunity to try the eateries.

Virgin Voyages Menus & Restaurants

The Wake – The upscale “steak and seafood” restaurant that is also available for brunch most days with unique brunch items and a variety of egg preparations. This is the most popular restaurant and fills up fast, so reserve early. See The Wake Menu and wine list.

Extra Virgin – The Italian concept that also sometimes does daytime tapas tastings. See the Extra Virgin menu .

Razzle Dazzle – An eclectic mix of feel-good food with a focus on vegetarian options. This restaurant is open for breakfast/brunch and dinner.  See the Razzle Dazzle menu .

Restaurants Dining Food Virgin Voyages

Gunbae – A fun group dining event where everyone sits around a hibachi-style grill while the food is cooked ‘on stage’. A unique dining experience! (until you realize the strangers you’re dining with might just be unfriendly) – See the Gunbae Menu

Test Kitchen – Probably the strangest concept on the Virgin Voyages cruise ships is the Test Kitchen where food is served in a laboratory setting which signifies that the chef experiments with food, flavor, and presentation. There are 2 menus served at different times during a voyage (only one menu per night) and each is an unusual dining experience when matched with the suggested wine pairing making for a memorable and quite educational dinner to remember. See the Test Kitchen menu & virtual tour.

Pink Agave – One of our favorites! A Mexican-inspired, small bites eatery that has a little bit of everything. Being from Texas and being an Expat in Europe at the moment, I just missed Mexican food, so whether it’s really that good is subjective, but I thought it was pretty amazing. Small enchiladas, guacamole, tacos, and a variety of other dishes were always good. The only problem we really had was often the items weren’t very warm by the time they got to the table. I suspect they premake many of the items on a line in the kitchen so they have the opportunity to cool down before making it to the table. More than anything, though, the bar is a great secret spot that few people realize is open to just have drinks if you want and the interior + vibe is some of the best on the ship. Groovy, cozy, and feels decidedly luxe (especially for a few tacos!) – If you’re a tequila or mezcal aficionado, this is the place for you, don’t forget to check out the menu for all varieties and tasting options. See the Pink Agave menu & virtual tour.

Other restaurants on the Lady Ships include

The Galley – This is Virgin Voyages’ answer to the buffet, when in fact it’s no buffet at all. It’s a food hall where you can select from a variety of menu options from basic burgers and salads to greasy spoon-style all-American breakfast dishes. You can get sushi, noodles, salads, burgers, pasta, diner-inspired meals, etc. It’s a great option for breakfast, lunch, or dinner.  For those who are looking for their soda / soft drink fix, there are self-service soda fountains throughout The Galley – take as much as you want. There is also a pastry corner with some of the best desserts and cookies I’ve had on a cruise ship (with a few misses, as well).

The Pizza Place – a grab-and-go small pizza joint with a few different pizza options. On a nice day, there is some lovely outdoor seating as well.

Lick Me Til Ice Cream – A passenger favorite! Just a good old-fashioned icecream parlor style walk-up bar. Full of homemade icecreams where flavors rotate regularly.

The Dock House – which is part bar and part outdoor tapas-style bites. Think shrimp skewers, mini sandwiches, chicken skewers, and random small bites.

Sun Club Cafe – An outdoor top deck area serving things like Poke’ Bowls during the afternoon.

Social Club – A random area on the ship that has things like sweets, popcorn, quick bites (hot dogs, chicken wings, nachos, etc), and pastries so you’ll never go hungry…. ever!

Finally, there is the Sip Champagne bar that hosts afternoon tea most days. This is a paid event that includes towers of scones and cakes with optional champagne.

Virgin Voyages Bars, beverages, and beverage packages (Bar Tab)

All essential beverages are included with Virgin Voyages which includes bottomless soda from the fountains, tea, coffee (except specialty coffee), and water. In general, the drink prices are what you would expect in land-based bars and restaurants, not excessively marked up like other cruise lines.

Drink Package & the “Bar Tab”

There is no beverage package or alcohol package offered for Virgin Voyages ships, however, they do have the “Bar Tab” system which is a prepaid amount in $300 increments where Virgin will often add bonus amounts depending on promotions. Typically for every $300 purchased, Virgin Voyages will add an additional $50, however, on a recent voyage we were able to get $100 in addition to our bar tab purchases and we were able to purchase multiple bar tabs and receive multiple bonuses. On occasion, Virgin Voyages will throw in bar tabs for certain itineraries valued up to $600. So while it’s not exactly a drink package, it is a nice way to provide a bit of a bonus.

Specialty Coffee

It’s worth noting that while all non-alcoholic beverages are included on the ships, however, specialty coffee is NOT included. There are two coffee shops on each ship that serves every coffee drink you could imagine, albeit for an extra fee, the Grounds Club which feels like you’re in an actual coffee shop with complimentary pastries and other sweets. In the Galley, there is another Grounds Club as well. Everyone who had a specialty coffee in our travel group was quite pleased with it, even though it was an extra fee.

  • Everything to know about the Virgin Voyages “Bar Tab”

The bars and lounges on the Virgin Voyages ships

Not surprisingly, there are bars and bar services EVERYWHERE. While some of the bars maintain strange hours, there’s always something open and somewhere to get a drink.

Sip Champagne Bar Virgin Voyages

The Manor – An amazing nightclub at sea with a swanky London club vibe.

On The Rocks – This bar is the main watering hole in the center of the ship that has everything the entire ship has to offer and is the best place to find craft cocktails.  Afternoon trivia and early evening til late night bands and solo singers are found here almost daily.

Sip Champagne Bar – The champagne bar of the ship is an elegant space that makes a good meeting spot for pre-dinner cocktails. This is generally a quieter area which is also great for spending time reading or working if necessary.

Loose Canon – A nautical-themed pub bar where trivia can also be found on some days. The selection seems limited compared to other locations on the ship.

Social Club – This is where you can find amazing boozy milkshakes and hotdogs

Dock House & The Dock – My favorite space on the ship in the aft (rear). It is an entire outdoor area with seating, loungers, beds, and umbrellas with bar service. It’s like being in a swanky beach club. On the inside is the Dock House with a similar chill vibe and an attached full bar serving cocktails and small bites where music happens in the evenings.

Aquatic Club – This is the outdoor pool bar in the center of the ship typical of any pool bar on any cruise ship.

Finally, there is Richard’s Rooftop for the exclusive use of the Rock Star and Mega Rock Star guests. It’s part relaxation space and part bar service, a great escape for passengers who have booked suites.

Let’s not forget the “Shake For Champagne”

A fun and one-of-a-kind experience is shaking your phone for a bottle of champagne! The price for Shake for Champagne is $95 , or the cost of the Moet which comes with glasses and an ice bucket straight to your location within minutes (Usually). We tried this several times around the ship and generally within 10 minutes, a champagne steward found us based on our phone’s location and accurately delivered the “goods”. On some of the promotional packages like a Splash of Romance , there is an included Shake for Champagne.

Solo Travelers

Virgin Voyages has a couple of ways to sail solo! First is a promotion or program where there is no additional charge or single supplement if you want to cruise alone. An amazing advantage to those who just want to have their own good time! This may be somewhat deceiving as the pricing on Virgin tends to be on a PER CABIN basis anyway. So to say there is no supplement for a single traveler is a bit of a gray area.

There are also a limited number of smaller cabins marketed as “Solo Insider” or “Solo Seaview” cabins. It’s worth checking if there are promotions for no single supplement Sea Terrace cabins first, as the price isn’t necessarily compelling for solo cabins.

The staff & crew on Virgin cruise ships

Virgin embraces diversity in a big way. This is why the brand and cruise line is popular with all walks of life and the same can be said for their onboard staff. You’ll see tattoos, piercings, long hair, shaved heads, every ethnicity, and every possible variety of humans working on a Virgin ship. It’s great to see at a corporate level, diversity is embraced. HOWEVER, sometimes it felt like the hiring process prioritized unusual people and unique looks rather than those qualified to provide the best service.

As someone who’s been on countless cruises on almost all major cruise lines, there’s always something that is consistent and it’s the incredible desire to serve the guests. It’s rare to come across a crew member on a cruise ship that isn’t happy to help or at least appears happy to be there doing their job whereas on the 14-day Virgin Voyages transatlantic cruise we took, it appeared there was a large portion of the staff that weren’t terribly friendly or happy to be doing their jobs.

This was noticeable not only with our entire group sailing together but with other passengers as well. Enough so that we mentioned to one of the department managers that it felt like we, the guests, were interrupting the staff holiday when we asked for anything.

In some instances, some of the staff were downright dismissive and rude, a real turn-off considering everything else on the ship was pretty flawless.

Know before you go on a Virgin Voyages cruise. The most common questions with a few helpful tips:

First time on virgin voyages here are some expert tips.

  • Take a moment when you have seemingly nothing else you have to do and just walk around the ship and enjoy the art. Some it is absolutely incredible and often overlooked.
  • Provided the seas aren’t bad, the hot tubs on the back of deck 16 are open pretty much 24/7. Get yourself a drink and enjoy the sounds of the ocean and the moonlight.
  • If you’re into it, there is a topless suntanning area on deck 17. It’s the same place they host morning yoga
  • On Scarlet night, get yourself up to the pool deck as soon as it gets dark out. They inflate the octopus pretty early and it’s a great place for selfies before the festivities.
  • If you are sailing solo, getting dinner reservations is kind of pointless (read that as not always necessary) beyond the first evening. I usually just decide in the morning where I want to go for dinner that evening.
  • If you are going to eat at The Wake, try to time it for 30-45 minutes after the all-aboard time at a port. By doing this you’ll be treated to a great view of the ship pulling away from the port.
  • Finding a quiet spot on the ship can be difficult but there are a few spots including “The Scene” (just forward of the pool, port side deck 15) and often the restaurants, which are closed but you can still often sit at a table mid-day.
  • If you are a night owl and decide to walk every deck of the ship at 2 am, just be aware that security will come along to say hi and make sure you’re not up to something bad. BTW walking decks 5-14 is equivalent to about 2 miles.
  • A magnetic battery-powered night light is a great gadget! If you need to use the restroom at night, the cabin is pretty much pitch black and there’s no low setting on the bathroom light.
  • If you are on a longer voyage, consider taking less clothing and using the laundry services instead. It’s a great way to save bag space and it’s quite reasonably priced. If you have deep blue perks one bag of laundry is included so there’s no reason not to use it.
  • Do not plan to purchase any Sundries on the ship. This is one of the few places where Virgin goes the traditional cruise ship route and charges through the nose for things. A 4oz sunscreen bottle was $30+ for example. My understanding is feminine products are more normally priced, however.
  • While they don’t display them anymore, they do have adult toys for purchase if you ask in the sundries shop.
  • The Galley hours are WEIRD. Pay attention to them if you want to go for something other than breakfast food. They keep changing them but at one point you couldn’t get a burger between 2:30 and 6. I think it’s currently 4-6pm but I could be wrong.
  • Speaking of the Galley, Nearly every day they have special. Usually, it’s a unique burger but I’ve seen everything from curry to steaks to Fried chicken. If they have a special, order it, I highly doubt you’ll regret it.
  • The galley also cycles deserts / pastries so keep an eye out for different stuff every night.
  • Premium coffee (Starbucks style stuff) can be purchased but in the galley coffee and tea is freely available if you assemble them yourself. They have milk, creamer, alternative milks, honey, and other stuff to make pretty much whatever you want. They also have a pretty good selection for Twinning’s Teas.
  • You can actually get a full breakfast before disembarking the ship at Razzle Dazzle or The Wake. I suggest booking this as you board the ship if you want to do it on the last morning particularly if you want to eat at the wake.

Other fun & unique things on the Virgin Voyages cruise ships

The Net – Unless you’ve been on a luxury yacht, you probably haven’t seen a suspended net like this. A neat feature located in the aft area of the ship on Deck 16 is a sprawling nautical net to lounge on at your leisure. But I must say, it’s really uncomfortable, but fun to try.

Squid Ink Tattoo Parlor on Virgin Voyages

Squid Ink on Virgin Voyages is the onboard tattoo parlor, the only ones offered at sea. You can indulge in an inked memory for as little as $150 for a standard design (think small anchor or wave) or have the talented artists work magic on something completely custom. Speaking to other sailors it seems the custom work always comes out around $450 for something the size of a playing card, but they will quote you on an individual basis.

Here are the “house” designs offered for about $150 on the Virgin Ships:

Squid Ink Virgin Voyages Cost and Designs

Private Karaoke Rooms – Who knew you could book a private karaoke room at sea, totally free! Just look for the “Groupie” sign towards the front of the ship on deck 7. These rooms range in size and just require you to sign in, no fee is necessary. Sing your heart out!

Record Store – Just when you think you’ve seen it all, you stumble upon a corner that is full of music (Vinyl) available to purchase. The Voyage Vinyl will be a treat to any music collector!

The Free Video Game Arcade – Another bit of fun to be had on the ship is the arcade, pool tables and air hockey, all complimentary!

The Casino – Casinos on ships are a big draw for so many passengers, and Virgin Voyages has made sure to provide a gaming experience to meet or exceed a gambler’s expectations. Slots and video poker games are plentiful while there are numerous card tables, roulette wheels, and craps tables as well.

Sail away party – Don’t miss the famous Sail Away party with complimentary sparkling wine that flows freely for about an hour. +/- It’s a ton of fun and sets the vibe of the voyage and allows you to discover who’s on board. It’s a great social exercise to have people meet and greet as well as get a glimpse of the “Happenings Crew” which are the on board entertainers.

Virgin Voyages Reviews – From the passengers’ mouths (or keyboards)…

Just a few comments from passengers who’ve experienced these amazing ships

The restaurants are all really good. Like REALLY good. We had a blast at Test Kitchen. Good food and so much fun. I’d suggest you pair your meals with alcohol for an even better experience. The Wake (I love a steakhouse) was good, but maybe a bit slow. Gunbae was a blast. The food was great. The interactivity was incredible. And Pink Agave was our favourite. Get everything. And then order more of the stuff you loved. There will be a lot of it. On board the Scarlet Lady
The ship is great. I believe it’s the smallest I’ve been on but it feels big with a great layout. Easy to get around. But lots of shops, etc. My only complaint about the size is we experienced a couple of days of high winds and we rolled side-to-side a bit more than I am comfortable with, and a bit more than I believe a bigger ship would have. On board the Scarlet Lady
24 hours into the trip and I’m completely converted. 100% better than Rcl, Ncl, celebrity and obviously carnival. I’ve been on multiple of all these other lines and this is something else entirely. The attention to detail is beyond what other lines could comprehend much less accomplish. The crew is super friendly, endlessly attentive and at the same time super relaxed. It’s almost impossible to describe but you know what someone looks and sounds like when they enjoy their job. On board the Valiant Lady

They do have so cabins: solo insider and so Seaview. You may want to correct that statement.

Hi Iris – I’m glad you brought this up – When i was on the Valiant Lady, they were selling standard cabins with solo rates and not cabins designated for solos only. There was never a mention of Solo specific cabins just cabins that could accommodate 1-3 people. The terminology has changed some and I’ll update the website to reflect that.

Bring the bikini, leave the kids: 4 things to know about sailing with Virgin Voyages

virgin voyages adults only

As soon as you check in on a Virgin Voyages cruise, you’re given an electronic bracelet. And once you step on board, you’re greeted by big smiles, neon lights and Top 40 pop music.

It feels like an upscale PlayPlace for adults. In the best way possible.

The line went all-in on the fun aspect, going as far as reimagining the cruise director role. On Virgin, an entire team is dedicated to making the passenger – or sailor, as the line calls them – experience the best it can possibly be for their unique needs.

"The Happenings cast is our reimagination of the cruise director you will find on other cruise lines,” said Richard Kilman, Virgin Voyages VP of entertainment. “Everyone is cast individually based on different, authentic passion points (i.e. wellness, food/drink, performing, art, games/competitions, etc.) and their ability to help us create the unique vibe you can only experience on board Virgin Voyages. They all lead a vast array of events (many aligned with their personal passion points) that take place throughout every voyage."

With a plethora of Instagram-ready spots, photo booth setups, sparkling wine happy hours, more than 20 eateries, gratuities, Wi-Fi, essential drinks and unlimited group fitness classes all included, Virgin is aiming for the modern traveler looking for easy, personalized experiences.

USA TODAY recently participated in a Virgin Voyages press trip aboard its Resilient Lady vessel on its Adriatic Sea & Greek Gems itinerary. Here are four things that make a Virgin Voyages cruise different.

It’s an over-18 cruise

The adults-only cruise sounds more salacious than it is. Mainly, you’re reminded it’s an 18-plus sailing during the entertainment portions. It caters to an adult audience while keeping it tongue-in-cheek and tasteful – for the most part.

Shows like "Persephone" and "Another Rose" definitely lean into sensuality, while "Miss Behave" and "Mind Mangler: Member of the Tragic Circle" lean into absurdist humor. These are not the typical cruise shows. Many of the sailors on the line’s Resilient Lady ship commented on the Broadway quality of the performances.

Scarlet Night, Virgin’s response to a formal night, might just be the epitome of what the line aims to do. Described as “an immersive celebration” where sailors are encouraged to dress in red, it’s a night when the entire ship is buzzing with excitement.

“Through pop-up circus performances, interactive games, karaoke, myth-telling, and live music, come pay tribute to a love that washed the world scarlet − culminating in a drenched-in-red pool and dance party unlike anything you've ever seen,” the line says on its website.

There’s no buffet

Just because there’s no buffet doesn’t mean you’ll go hungry. With more than 20 eateries on board, the most difficult part of meal times will be deciding whether you want to try something new or stick with that yummy dish you found the first night.

Don’t worry, at The Galley − Virgin’s alternative to a buffet − sailors can find several “shops” akin to a food court where they can order at leisure or wait for a server to come to their table. But do keep in mind that not all those spots are open 24/7, nor do they offer a full menu throughout the day.

For the main event, or dinner, it’s also sailor’s choice. Rather than an assigned dining time, sailors can book reservations at any of the five restaurants on board just as they would on land.

Here’s a snapshot of the restaurants:

  • The Wake: Steakhouse presented as “a modern twist to the classic chophouses of the mid-20th century.”
  • Razzle Dazzle: Comfort food with a twist. Also, boozy brunch. No need to say more.
  • Pink Agave: Elevated Mexican cuisine with “the largest selection of tequila and mezcal at sea,” and a DJ.
  • Extra Virgin: Italian restaurant with “regionally inspired food punctuated by our handmade pasta.”
  • Gunbae: Korean BBQ cooked at your table. Prime spot for solo cruisers to meet others at the communal tables or for large groups to get the night started.
  • Test Kitchen: A pre-fixed tasting menu (with accommodations for allergies and preferences) that only presents you with a list of ingredients. You can do a wine or cocktail pairing with each course. (Do this one on the first night.)

The vast majority of items on the menus are included, but each of the restaurants offers one or two indulgent options at an extra cost.

There’s no drink package

Just because it’s an adults-only cruise doesn’t mean the drinks are unlimited – unless you want them to be.

Alcoholic drinks and specialty coffees cost extra on board. Soft drinks, juices and drip coffee are included in the voyage fare. Virgin Voyages has a pre-boarding Bar Tab offer where sailors can deposit $300 into their “Wallet” to get an additional $50. Much like other lines, the offer is available only before boarding, but sailors can add money to the Bar Tab as they see fit.

Don’t be alarmed. Drinks are moderately priced, from $6 to $15, with higher-end beverages around $29. On a seven-day cruise, $300 could equal about five drinks a day.

All restaurants on the ship have unique drink menus, so make sure to leave room for those. You can view your Wallet balance on the Virgin Voyages app and add more to it during the trip – more on that below.

Free, stable Wi-Fi

Everything from dinner and performance reservations to shore excursions, to keeping track of your tab and purchases is on the app.

With that, however, comes one of the best perks for those of us who need to be connected with the outside world at all times: free Wi-Fi. Good, stable Wi-Fi. A faster, premium Wi-Fi package is available for those who need to work and hold video calls, but if you just need to check email and social media, the basic free plan works great.

The app can be a little frustrating when it freezes, but no one in our group found it limiting. Simply closing the app and reopening seemed to solve the problem.

Overall, sailing aboard the Resilient Lady felt like one of those experiences you can’t really describe. How do you write down “it had good, fun vibes”? Maybe just like that. But, different from other lines, Virgin’s vibe was engaging, and knowing that passengers were all there without kids, all looking to have a good time, changed the atmosphere.

Is Virgin Voyages the cruise for cruise haters?

Is Virgin Voyages the cruise for cruise haters?

--> BY Quentin Long

Last updated . 15 November 2019

A cruise for adults with a tattoo parlour onboard are just two of the differences that Virgin Voyages is betting will attract a different cruiser. Quentin Long sat down with two of the people responsible for bringing this vision to life to find out just how different Virgin Voyages will be.

The human headline, Sir Richard Branson, has just necked Moët from a bottle to a cheering and adoring crowd of Australian travel agents and media. In about 30 minutes he will be dancing on the bar.

This is how Virgin Voyages tells the Australian travel industry it is open for business – and it doesn’t even have a ship yet. Virgin will take delivery of the first of four new ships, the Scarlet Lady, on Valentine’s Day 2020.

Any product that is badged Virgin comes with hype and high expectations thanks to the 70-year-old founder’s zest for the risqué and racy, and Virgin Voyages is staking its future on its ability to differentiate true to the Virgin brand.

Virgin Voyages CCO Nirmal Saverimuttu tells me he thinks he may just have cracked the code to open cruising up to a new market.

The Scarlet Lady Virgin Voyagers

The Scarlet Lady

“There is a whole group of people we spoke to when we did our research that said ‘in my everyday life I am at boutique hotels, at cool restaurants and bars, places with high-end design and I would love it if you could marry that with a cruise’.”

The real secret ingredient, according to Saverimuttu, is that it’s adults only. “As we did more and more research we saw significant preference and rate premium from people who wanted an adults-only product.”

How does this translate onboard?

The inspiration behind the onboard experience is – ironically – based on terra firma, Shane Riley, assistant vice president of international sales, tells me as more glasses of Moët are delivered to our table.

Virgin Voyagers Razzle Dazzle red bar

Inside the Razzle Dazzle red bar

“We have taken what happens in the best cities in the world and curated that into an experience that will allow people to live their life onboard as they do there.”

Which could explain why Squid Ink, the tattoo parlour onboard, was included in the mix.

As with any brave reimagining of a product, the language of the established industry has been discarded to make a statement: guests are ‘sailors’, entertainment is referred to as ‘events and gigs’ and the service ethos is described as ‘rock star’, as in you will be treated like one.

A sure-fire rock star favourite will be the Shake for Champagne on-demand service. Sailors can get a fresh bottle of Moët delivered to them within minutes if they open the Virgin Voyages Sailor app and shake it.

Virgin Voyagers the Wake

The Wake is one of the most upmarket places onboard

But that’s not the most ‘Virgin’ of talking points – the ice-cream parlour is called Lick Me Till Ice Cream and the dining table in the RockStar suite comes with a set of stairs for rockers to get on the tabletop more easily for some grooving.

With 20-plus eateries, the volume of places to eat is on par with most cruise ships, although the lack of buffet could be considered different.

Razzle Dazzle is a vegetarian restaurant where one can be ‘naughty’ and add some animal protein and is probably the most off-the-cruise-script outlet. ’50s steak, seafood and martini-styled The Wake is one of the most upmarket places onboard.

Razzle Dazzle Virgin Voyager

Razzle Dazzle is the onboard vegetarian restaurant

The cabins are said to be roomier than a standard ship’s cabin thanks to the innovative German design of the Seabed. Virgin is claiming the first of its kind at sea with a bed and lounge that can be rearranged to make space to entertain people in your cabin.

The renderings show a very sleek sop modern design. It could be compared to the Celebrity Cruise aesthetic.

The RockStar suites are so on brand – a hot tub on the huge balcony, an outdoor shower, the previously mentioned table with stairs and guitars.

Virgin Voyager room

Rooms feature a bed and lounge that can be rearranged to entertain

A new show by infamous producer and playwright Randy Wiener (founder of NYC’s out-there ‘theatre of varieties’ The Box) has been commissioned along with circus acts and micro pop-up plays.

At Voyage Vinyl a collection of old classic vinyl can be found and purchased. But it is the on board karaoke at The Groupie that will probably be the scene of many a crimes against music.

The launch itineraries are decidedly old world cruise – the Caribbean, but with a stop at the exclusive, for Virgin Voyages Sailors, The Beach Club at Bimini in the Bahamas.

With the launch of the inaugural sailing of Lady Scarlet still months away, we’ll have to wait to see whether Virgin Voyages can deliver on its promise.

But Saverimuttu is confident. “I think people will love everything we have come up with… because everyone deserves to be treated like a rock star once in their lives, right?”

Step aboard Virgin Voyages' adults-only, luxury cruise ship, which has 17 decks, a tattoo parlor, and a playground for grown-ups

I sailed on a luxury, adults-only Virgin Voyages cruise ship called the Valiant Lady.

It can hold more than 2,700 guests with unique amenities like a tattoo shop and an adult playground.

Here's a tour of the ship's 17 decks full of cabins, restaurants, and communal spaces.

In August 2023, I took my first cruise with Virgin Voyages , a relatively new luxury cruise line I've heard about from friends and other travelers for the last couple of years.

Virgin Voyages launched in 2021 as an adults-only cruise line , according to its website . Since then, it's won several awards, including five from Cruise Critic for its cabins, dining, service, and ships in 2023.

Virgin Voyages has four "lady" ships: Scarlet Lady , Valiant Lady, Resilient Lady, and Brilliant Lady. A representative from Virgin Voyages told Business Insider that the ships are pretty much identical, aside from some differences in artwork and entertainment.

I cruised on Valiant Lady, which began sailing in March 2022. Like the other ships, it can hold more than 2,700 guests.

Virgin Voyages ships sail in Europe and the Caribbean. I took a seven-day Mediterranean cruise that left out of Barcelona.

My ship sailed round-trip from Barcelona, Spain, to ports in Italy and France, including Toulon, Ajaccio, and Marina di Carrara . The cruise ended with an overnight stop in Ibiza .

I booked a room with a balcony that typically costs about $5,910 for two people on my itinerary.

The ship has 1,408 cabins and suites, according to the cruise line . I booked a mid-tier stateroom with a balcony — a step above sea-view cabins, which only have a window. BI received a media rate for the cruise.

The room I booked was 225 square feet, including the balcony. I thought the cabin made great use of the tiny space, including luxury details , from smart controls to a private terrace with a hammock.

But a lot of the fun takes place in the ship's communal areas.

According to Virgin Voyages , the ships are 912 feet long and pack in 17 decks filled with cabins, restaurants, and communal spaces.

During my cruise, I never got bored. From shops and swimming pools to game rooms and swing sets, I thought there was so much to do.

To get up and down the ship's many decks, elevators take guests to 13 of the 17 levels.

The lower three decks of the ship are only accessible to crew members , and the top deck is only accessible from the outdoor portion of deck 16.

Sparkling details like light projections in the elevator and iridescent panels along the staircase made me feel luxurious while getting around the ship.

The fun starts on deck five, the lowest deck with staterooms. It also houses the ship's spa.

Hot stone massages, hydrating skin treatments, and indoor pools can all be found on deck five at Virgin Voyages' Redemption Spa .

These treatments and amenities come at an additional price. Massages and facials start at $155 and passes to access amenities start at $39.

Upstairs, decks six and seven are packed with communal spaces, including several show venues.

A reporter at The Points Guy recently called Virgin Voyages' wide range of entertainment the best on any cruise line. During my voyage, I thought it was easy to see why. There were dance parties, live music, comedy shows, and more.

Many of the venues for these events are on decks six and seven, including the Red Room for performances; On the Rocks, a music bar; and the Manor, a nightclub and theater.

These lower decks also house many of the ship's restaurants and eateries, including fine dining rooms and an ice cream shop.

From personal pizzas to juicy steak dinners, there's plenty to eat on decks 5-7.

There are more than 20 restaurants and eateries on the ship. Food and drinks are included in the price of the ticket, save for alcoholic and specialty drinks as well as select menu items in some establishments.

On deck six, High Street is a strip of high-end shops that is reminiscent of a mall.

On High Street, I found a plethora of products from luxury brands including Louis Vuitton, Dior, Fendi, and Bulgari.

The strip also has a store dedicated to the Virgin brand that sells records and other merchandise.

On the same deck, Valiant Lady has a tattoo parlor called Squid Ink.

Virgin Voyages' ships are the first-ever cruises where you can get a tattoo on board, according to the cruise line . According to Cruise Gear , tattoo pricing starts at around $150.

Upstairs, deck seven is a gamer's paradise.

On deck seven, I found the arcade. It's a narrow, dark room with neon lights and games lining each side. Here, I raced cars and battled with buttons.

On the same floor, there's a larger room packed with tables for playing board games and puzzles, which are stacked on shelves around the space. I spotted decks of cards and a wide variety of nostalgic games from my childhood, including Mouse Trap, Cranium, and Operation.

Deck seven also has an outdoor lounge known as the Dock.

I thought the Dock was the most relaxing space on deck seven. It's an outdoor lounge at the back of the ship full of beds and sofas. The Dock serves small Mediterranean-inspired plates and hosts events.

I went to the Dock for a stargazing event. Guests got comfortable and looked up at the night sky while crew members told stories about the stars.

Decks 8-14 hold nothing but staterooms.

Most of the rooms on these decks have their own balcony. Mine was on deck 12.

Up on deck 15, there are two pools surrounded by lounge chairs and whirlpools.

The Aquatic Club is on deck 15 and has two pools separated by a bar — the main pool and the Well-Being Pool.

For a beach club vibe, I recommend the main pool because it's bigger and has music playing all the time. I was surprised to find that the pool felt relatively smaller than on a typical cruise ship, in my experience. But it was never too crowded to use — even in the afternoons — so this didn't bother me at all.

On the other side of the deck, The Well-Being Pool is smaller and has seating and jets in the water, so it felt to me like an extra-large whirlpool. But like the main pool, this one was never too crowded to go in either. And unlike the main pool, it was quiet, making it ideal for relaxing and cooling off.

Inside deck 15, there's the Galley, a large dining space with several eateries similar to a buffet.

The Galley is Virgin Voyages' food hall. Similar to a typical cruise ship buffet , there are several stands with a wide range of offerings. But unlike most buffets, servers make the plates and hand them to the customers.

In the Galley, I had tacos, sushi, desserts, and breakfast foods. There's also a burger grill, a noodle bar, a panini shop, and a popsicle stand.

Additionally on deck 15, there's a standalone restaurant called Gunbae that serves family-style Korean barbecue dishes.

There was also a gym in the indoor portion of deck 15.

B-Complex is the gym on board Virgin cruise ships. They have free weights and machines as well as fitness classes from yoga to spin sessions.

I don't like to work out on vacation unless it's a fun activity that makes me forget I'm exercising at all. So I didn't use the gym. But I thought B-Complex's offerings were consistent with gyms I've been to at home while offering a much better view — the ocean.

But I think you can get a more fun workout upstairs on deck 16.

On deck 16, the Athletic Club is home to an outdoor training center with strength and gymnastics equipment as well as a boxing ring.

The deck has a playground for adults with gigantic netted swing sets and seesaws ...

The adult playground was my favorite part of the ship. Against the backdrop of the sunset over the ocean, I bounced on seesaws and pumped my legs on large, netted swings with the breeze on my face. It made me feel like a kid again.

... and a wide variety of games and sports, like a giant chess board.

The playground area has a basketball court and other more unexpected offerings like foosball and a gigantic chess board.

For thrill-seekers, there's a net you can walk — or crawl — around with a view of the ocean below.

The net reminded me of a catamaran. From the outside, I didn't think stepping onto it would be scary. But as soon as I did, my gut dropped. So I immediately got on all fours and crawled to the other side. With butterflies swarming in my stomach, I thought this activity was way more thrilling than I was expecting.

In my opinion, deck 16 is home to the most relaxing spot — Richard's Rooftop.

Richard's Rooftop is the VIP lounge on Virgin Voyages' cruise ships. The rooftop is reserved for passengers staying in suites — known as "Rockstars" by the cruise line .

Virgin Voyages gave BI access to Richard's Rooftop , and I thought it was the most relaxing place on the ship.

It's packed with cabanas, loungers, and whirlpools. It also has a bar and lounge-side service.

Lastly, the top deck, 17, holds the runway, a bright-red track that circles the ship.

On deck 17, the track is the perfect place to run — or walk, if you vacation like me — with constant views of the wide-open ocean.

What makes Virgin Voyages adults only? Are all Virgin Voyages adults only?

virgin voyages adults only

Virgin Voyages is the only major cruise line that is exclusively for adults. You have to be at least 18 to embark on a Virgin cruise.

And yes, all Virgin Voyages (including off-ship excursions) are adults only.

No kids? Does that mean Virgin Voyages’ adults-only cruises are boring?

“Boring” isn’t a word in Virgin Voyages’ vocabulary. But Virgin adult-only cruises do make a lot of changes to the typical cruise ship formula (for the better).

Unlike ordinary cruises that devote a significant amount of deck space to kid-friendly playrooms and amenities, Virgin Voyages dedicates all its space to adults. So while the deck pool may be a little more basic, it also means there aren’t screaming children fighting to be next on the waterslide.

Better yet, all that space normally reserved for kiddos has been put toward luxe amenities: a sumptuous spa, a top-tier gym, a wrap-around running track, a yoga pavilion… A Virgin adult-only cruise is a non-stop party where you don’t have to worry about little ones overhearing adult conversations.

In other words: Virgin Voyages’ adults-only cruises are perfect for parents who want a weekend escape.

Can 18-year-olds drink on Virgin adult-only cruises?

While 18+ Sailors (what Virgin Voyages passengers are called) can enjoy alcoholic beverages at sea, they are not allowed to bring alcohol aboard ships departing from the United States.

If you’re confused, connect with Fora . We've got you.

We heard a rumor: Is Virgin Voyages a sex cruise?

The short answer is no . The longer answer: you do you .

You may encounter a “what-happens-on-a-Virgin-Voyages-adults-only-cruise-stays-at-sea” vibe, but you can also rest easily knowing the vibe is exceptionally safe, friendly and fun.

Are Virgin Voyages ships old or new?

Virgin Voyages launched during the pandemic, so all their ships, including the Scarlet Lady and Valiant Lady, are brand new — a refreshing experience compared to many other cruise line’s aging fleets.

How do I decide what Virgin Voyages cruise is right for me?

We recommend starting with the list of destinations and departure points (like Miami in the US) and each cruise itinerary’s length. Some options run through the weekend, while others are a bit longer.

Plan your Virgin adults-only cruise with Fora and your advisor can be a great resource for narrowing down your options.

7 things that make Virgin Voyages adults-only cruises different

virgin voyages adults only

Fora co-founder Henley Vazquez with advisors on our Virgin Voyages FAM

During our Virgin Voyages FAM trip , we got to experience the excitement firsthand. Here are all the things that felt different from other cruises.

1. A kids-free getaway at sea doesn’t mean adults aren’t encouraged to be playful

From whimsical cocktails, like an Old Fashioned served in a popcorn bucket, to tablet-controlled cabins — including neon light presets like “Zen,” “hungover” and “get it on” — Virgin Voyages adults-only cruises are far from somber, and the brand never takes itself too seriously.

These cruises are a blast, with tons of playful touches spread throughout. Entertainment is participatory, too. For example, at Gunbae, the Korean BBQ restaurant onboard the Scarlet Lady, your waiter will teach you games during dinner.

The overall vibe feels very much like a wedding party at sea (in the best way). Don’t be surprised if you end up dancing in the pool by the end of the night.

Pro tip: shake your cruise app (which is used for just about everything) anywhere on the ship and Champagne will be delivered to you.

2. Guests receive a wearable instead of a key card

In line with Virgin Voyages’ commitment to using technology in innovative and fun ways, guests are given a wearable band instead of easy-to-lose keycards. We found the experience to be exceptionally convenient, especially since the band doubles as your credit card (it’s linked to your room and you can track bills and receipts on the shipboard app).

After our own experience, we joked that we missed the convenience of our wristbands (they definitely make splitting checks at a restaurant way easier).

3. Travelers can get a tattoo at sea

There’s no other cruise line where you can live out your old-timey sailor dreams by getting a (real) tattoo at sea. Virgin Voyages partnered with World Famous Tattoo Ink to create Squid Ink, the first and only shipboard tattoo parlor.

4. Virgin Voyages adult cruises place an emphasis on wellness (without sacrificing fun)

Virgin Voyages’ adults-only cruises are much more than party boats — not that there’s anything wrong with that.

Wellness is a focus on Virgin ships, and you’ll find plenty of related amenities that you typically won’t find on other cruise ships, like free yoga sessions, aerobics classes and more. But don’t worry, no one’s expecting you to compete in the Olympics — this is all for fun.

The ship’s menu also includes plenty of diet-friendly options. And speaking of…

5. There’s no buffet-style dining — Virgin Voyages is all about an elevated & restaurant-style dining culture

virgin voyages adults only

If you’re looking for great food-inspired travel , Virgin adult-only cruises may be an underrated option.

Most cruise lines include buffet-style meals in the ticket price, plus an upcharge for “specialty dining” options. It’s not a bad system, but it may leave a little to be desired for travelers hoping to indulge in elevated dining without having to spend more.

Virgin Voyages, however, goes all in on restaurant-style dining options. You won’t find any buffet dining halls on the Scarlet Lady or her sister ships, but you will find 20+ eateries with cuisine from all corners of the globe. Most offer table service (with a server, menus — the whole nine yards), but there are also single-serve and self-serve options (think pizza to go or premade sandwiches and snacks)

Vegetarians and those with gluten allergies will also be happy to know that Virgin Voyages is very accommodating here, as well.

Best of all: all the food is included in Virgin’s ticket price.

6. The rooms are exceptionally posh & spacious

Virgin Voyages’ rooms are well designed in terms of convenience and style. Even standard rooms sport a fun theme with plenty of cool gadgets, like remote-controlled curtains, thermostats and neon lights.

Terrace rooms are especially cool — they’re equipped with hammocks and gorgeous ocean views — but the RockStar Quarters are the crème de la crème of cabins on Virgin Voyages adults-only cruises. There are a few different styles available, including the Massive Suite, which features a private outdoor hot tub and terrace, a spacious lounge area and a music room stocked with guitars (because why not).

Guests who stay in RockStar Quarters also earn special perks, like access to the private sundeck and round-the-clock concierge service.

7. Virgin Voyages adult cruises’ nightlife and entertainment are top notch (from an onboard casino to a cruise-ship arcade, they’ve got it all)

Entertainment on a Virgin Voyages adults-only cruise is in a class of its own, with themed nights, nonstop parties and an awesome array of attractions.

While you’ll still find some familiar cruise-ship tropes, like an onboard casino and a slate of exciting shows, Virgin has made a concerted effort to distinguish itself with interactive performances and spaces created by world-class directors, choreographers and producers.

There's something for everyone, from Bingo-With-a-Twist to UNTITLED DANCESHOW PARTYTHING (ask your Fora Advisor) as well as live music acts throughout the ship at all hours.

Virgin Voyages is great for solo travel, group travel & everything in between

virgin voyages adults only

Ultimately, a Virgin Voyages adults-only cruise is an exceptional experience for all types of travelers, especially the young at heart. The whole experience is reminiscent of the best of Las Vegas (check out the coolest hotels in Vegas ), but in a concentrated, ocean-bound package.

That goes whether you’re embarking with a group or on your own. In fact, on the first night, there’s a solo traveler meet-up so you can connect with other solo adventurers.

My first Virgin Voyages cruise impressed me so much, I decided on day one to stay onboard for back-to-back sailings. Here are 14 things I loved.

  • I went on a 5-night Virgin Voyages cruise and loved it so much, I booked an immediate second trip.
  • I paid $2,711 for my first cruise, and $880 to stay on for the second through an onboard promotion.
  • For the back-to-back trips, I didn't have to change rooms and experienced two different itineraries.

Insider Today

I'm a seasoned cruiser who recently sailed on the adults-only Virgin Voyages for the first time. I enjoyed my trip on the Scarlet Lady ship so much, I booked a back-to-back second sailing and stayed onboard.

virgin voyages adults only

I'm a seasoned cruiser and estimate I've spent more than 100 weeks at sea . During that time, I've sailed on lines like Carnival , Royal Caribbean, and Norwegian .

But this past summer, I tried the adults-only Virgin Voyages for the first time and boarded the Scarlet Lady for a five-night sailing to the Dominican Republic and Bahamas from Miami.

I paid $2,711, inclusive of taxes and port fees, for the cruise. I wasn't sure what to expect going into the trip on a line that was unfamiliar to me, but midway through, I knew I was a fan.

So much so, that I took advantage of an onboard promotion to stay on Scarlet Lady and make my trip nine nights with a second, back-to-back sailing to additional destinations in the Caribbean.

I didn't have to change rooms, got to experience three different places, and left feeling very impressed.

I didn't intend to book two back-to-back sailings, but I'm glad I did. I got to experience different ports of call, and go back to my favorite.

virgin voyages adults only

My first five-night "Dominican Daze" itinerary left from Miami and included full day visits to Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic and Bimini, Bahamas, where the cruise line operated their own private beach club.

The swanky vibe of the latter was a big draw for me, and part of what initially attracted me to book with Virgin Voyages. My sailing also included two sea days, which were ideal for exploring the ship and enjoying sunny days by the pool.

My second itinerary, which the cruise line called "Fire & Sunset Soirées," would stop in Key West, Florida, and return to Bimini and its beach club, which was a major reason I wanted to stay onboard.

During my sailings, I swam in the pools, sampled nine specialty eateries, and never felt overcrowded even though Scarlet Lady is only slightly above what Cruise Critic considers a mid-size ship . It can accommodate up to 2,770 passengers who are ages 18 and over, and 86% of guest cabins have a balcony .

Here's a closer look at each sailing, what my experience was like, and what convinced me to stay onboard Virgin Voyages' Scarlet Lady longer.

I set sail from Miami in a balcony cabin on deck eight of Scarlet Lady that impressed me right away.

virgin voyages adults only

On Scarlet Lady, I booked an XL Sea Terrace balcony cabin , and the price included gratuities, Wi-Fi, beverages like soda, and specialty dining.

I thought this was a good value given all the inclusions, most of which were things I typically pay extra for on other cruise lines.

My 265-square-foot cabin came with a large balcony to enjoy ocean views, and as a solo traveler, I felt like my stateroom had a generous layout with dedicated spaces for sleeping, lounging, working, and storing my belongings comfortably.

All specialty dining on Virgin Voyages is included in the base cruise fare and I loved the different approach to each venue, from menu selections to overall ambiance.

virgin voyages adults only

Based on my past cruising experiences, I have come to anticipate a few things when it comes to dining on cruises.

Typically, that includes a buffet, a main dining room, and handful of other eateries where very few à la carte   venues are included in the base cruise fare, and often come with an extra upcharge.

Virgin Voyages tossed that tradition out in favor of all-you-can-eat anywhere and everywhere. Scarlet Lady has 20 different restaurants, none of which came with a surcharge.

Dining options ranged from steak and seafood at The Wake to Korean barbeque at Gunbae,  tasty Mexican dishes at Pink Agave, and more.

As I sampled each restaurant, I kept double checking that I didn't really have to pay extra. I thought it was incredible that everything was included.

I also appreciated that snacks and treats were included, too, like the ice cream shop.

virgin voyages adults only

I was genuinely surprised by some of the handcrafted treats I found onboard Scarlet Lady.

One was homemade ice cream at the Lick Me Till Ice Cream treat shop which has no charge, just like the other Scarlet Lady food options.

I thought their selections were impressive with traditional flavors supplemented by gluten free, dairy free, and vegan options.

My favorite flavor was Brown Butter Financier, that tasted like an elevated vanilla.

The shop was open daily and flavor options changed throughout my sailing so I could try something different each visit.

Virgin Voyages offers a choice of purchasing an alcohol package at the start of the sailing, or à la carte.

virgin voyages adults only

Like meals, basic drinks like sodas and drip coffee, were included in the cruise rate.

But alcohol did come with an extra charge, like every other cruise I've taken.

Unlike traditional cruise drink packages, though, Virgin Voyages instead offers the option of either purchasing a pre-paid bar tab, which can be shared among friends, or going à la carte – and paying for each beverage as it's purchased, which is what I did.

Since I'm not much of a drinker, I knew the second option was a better value for me, as I would likely only have one or two on my entire sailing. During my cruise, I noticed beer starts at just $5, while cocktails averaged between $10-15.

On the first day of the trip, I was thrilled to see no reservations were required for the extra-large pool loungers or poolside daybeds, and I never saw these used to capacity.

virgin voyages adults only

My favorite way to spend sea days on Scarlet Lady was lounging by the pool.

Too often, I find that pool decks on cruise ships are overcrowded , yet this was not my experience during either of my sailings. I noticed loungers and seating for well over 100 people, yet I never saw poolside seating used to capacity. There were also two pools on Scarlet Lady. The main pool, pictured here, and a wellness pool, both on Deck 15.

But my favorite pool perk were the large daybeds, also provided free of charge. I thought they large enough to be suitable for couples or groups of friends, and indulgent for one person at a time, like me.

I never had to wait to find a seat and loved that all of the lounger options by the pool were free with no reservation required.

I found the wellness pool to be particularly appealing at night because the water was so warm.

virgin voyages adults only

While the main pool was my choice by day, the wellness pool was my go-to at night.

On past cruises, I've found that cruise ship pools often close by midnight. Yet one of the things that surprised me about Virgin Voyages is that they keep their pools open even later.

Once a crew member told me the pools stay open until around 3 a.m., I knew every night I would end my day by taking a post-midnight dip. And I chose the wellness pool for it, as it was heated to what felt like body temperature.

There was rarely anyone else using the pool after midnight, and I loved feeling like I had this amenity all to myself.

I was such a fan of these late-night swims, it became a major reason why I started thinking about extending my vacation with a second sailing.

My first night onboard hadn't even concluded when I knew I wanted to book another voyage immediately. Thankfully, I found an enticing promotion.

virgin voyages adults only

During my first evening onboard Scarlet Lady, I came upon the future cruise bookings desk.

Their promotional signage caught my eye, and I started seriously considering booking a second sailing.

There were several deals available, but the sales rep told me about a "solo sailor deal" offering steep discounts, devoid of single supplement fees often charged by other cruise lines. That's when a cruise line charges a solo traveler the same price for their cabin as for two people, as it helps the cruise line make up for the revenue that would have come from having a second person onboard, according to the LA Times .

The deal meant I only would pay $880 to stay on for an immediate second cruise, adding a four-night trip to Key West, Florida, and back to Bimini. I could even stay in the same cabin.

Based on my first day on Scarlet Lady, I knew I wanted to do it. I had already sampled delicious food, enjoyed the pool day and night, and appreciated that everything was included in the cruise fare.

I booked and paid in full right on the spot.

With my vacation transformed into a nine-night sailing, I felt even more relaxed and ready to explore the ship.

On sea days, I used cute cabanas by the pool that have no extra cost.

virgin voyages adults only

Waking up the next day, I felt extra relaxed on my first day at sea, knowing I now had more than a week to enjoy Scarlet Lady.

It was a perfectly sunny day, so I spent quality time at both the main pool and the wellness pool, and was surprised to find free-to-use cabanas overlooking the pool deck.

Like the daybeds, these were available first-come, first-serve but with so many available, it seemed to me like anyone who wanted to lounge in the playful, red-striped cabanas could easily do so.

There were also many quiet zones to chill out with an ocean view.

virgin voyages adults only

Everywhere I turned on the ship, I found quiet, serene spaces for lounging or reading with an ocean view as the backdrop.

One of my favorite spaces was on deck seven, pictured here, where The Dock Outdoor Restaurant & Bar Lounge had seating, loungers, and daybeds that could be used freely throughout the day.

The entire promenade deck also had quiet seating and lounging options, ensuring a leisurely sea day before the first port visit.

My first port of call was Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic. I found it easy to navigate thanks to helpful maps I saw around the port plaza.

virgin voyages adults only

I've been to Puerto Plata before, but I appreciated the reminder of all there was to do immediately at the port, including access to a bar's resort pool.

At the port, I saw plenty of shops, eateries, Duty Free, and excursion desks for those who want to join a formal tour.

Since the ship was in port all day, and I was familiar with Puerto Plata, I opted for a 15-minute walk to downtown so I could visit my favorite cafes in town that I've visited before.

My next port of call was Bimini, Bahamas. Here, Virgin Voyages operates to a sophisticated beach club for cruise guests with enormous pools.

virgin voyages adults only

Before even booking my first Scarlet Lady sailing, I knew I wanted to cruise with Virgin Voyages because of their massive beach resort on the island of Bimini in the Bahamas.

In the cruise line's promotions, I was enticed by images of inviting pools and a large sandy beach, all included in the Virgin Voyages cruise fare.

Once I arrived at the beach club, I was even more impressed. I noticed sleek poolside seating, an abundance of palm trees for shade, and soft sand just steps from the resort pools.

There were loungers around each pool, and the beach also provided chairs and loungers. Anyone who wanted a seat could find one, and at no extra charge.

I also thought the beach at the club was picturesque, and great for taking a dip in the cool blue water.

virgin voyages adults only

I thought the overall vibe at the beach club was chill, with people simply relaxing in the sun.

I loved the soft sand on the beach and how calm the water was. I thought it was ideal for enjoying a cool dip on a hot sunny day.

I noticed other guests swimming, playing catch in the waves, and sunning on loungers. It was an amazing day simply relaxing at the beach, and I felt extra lucky to have booked a second voyage so I would have another chance to visit to this beachside escape.

Later, when most other passengers disembarked, a handful of guests including myself instead went to a quick check-in for the back-to-back sailing.

virgin voyages adults only

On the last day of my first cruise, just about every passenger disembarked as usual.

Only a handful of guests were booked on a back-to-back sailing like me, and the small group of us waited in a common space to be checked out of the first cruise, then quickly checked back in for the second sailing.

We met crew in a central lounge area, and once we completed the brief check-in process, we were able to enjoy the rest of the day as we pleased.

I could have explored off-ship in Miami for the afternoon if desired, but I preferred to continue lazing about by the pool.

In between sailings, I thought the ship was extra quiet until afternoon on the second sailing's embarkation day.

virgin voyages adults only

Since I was able to stay in my same cabin, I didn't need to pack and unpack again, and had lots of time for sunning at the pool, taking a nap, and exploring the ship even more.

I thought it was neat to see the ship empty out and feel like I had most of it to myself. I explored a variety of lounge spaces where no guests were to be found as the crew prepared the ship for the next sailing.

The extra time onboard also gave me an opportunity to sample more eateries and enjoy my favorites a second time.

virgin voyages adults only

Now that my cruise vacation was nine days long, I had even more time to explore additional restaurants during the second itinerary.

I made a repeat visit to Pink Agave for elevated Mexican street food like chicken enchiladas, grilled corn, and house made guacamole.

My second sailing also added variety to my port visits. In Key West, we docked right downtown at Mallory Square, so it was easy to walk to attractions on my own.

virgin voyages adults only

Waking up in downtown Key West was a dream. When I disembarked the ship, I found I was already in the center of things and it was just a short walk to local cafes and attractions.

I've visited Key West many times, but I always welcome another visit, and having a port visit was ideal for exploring on foot and not having to pay expensive hotel prices, had I flown in for a vacation.

The ship docked in Key West for about 10 hours, so I had more than enough time to wander around and explore. I strolled through the historic district, visited the Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum, and even found funky art of the writer throughout town.

On my second voyage, I was so happy to return to the beach club in Bimini.

virgin voyages adults only

On my second visit to the beach club, I went straight to my favorite spots at the pools and enjoyed another blissful day in the sun.

As relaxing as my first visit was, the second time back was even better as I knew my way around. I felt like I could just kick back and enjoy my last port day knowing I made the most of my cruising experience.

After two back-to-back sailings, I can't wait to cruise on Virgin Voyages again. Next time I'll be hitching a ride on their other ship, Valiant Lady.

virgin voyages adults only

When I first booked with Virgin Voyages, I wasn't sure what to expect on an adults-only cruise.

But my first impression was so strong, as I loved the relaxed vibe onboard and all the great food that was included in the cruise fare. I thought it was amazing to be able to book an immediate second sailing at such a reduced rate, and I'm so glad I spent the extra time on Scarlet Lady.

That extra time gave me more days to dine around the ship and spend time poolside.

Plus, with everything I needed included in the cruise fare, I feel like I had excellent value on both cruises.

I cannot wait to sail with Virgin Voyages again, and while Scarlet Lady will remain a favorite of mine, next time, I plan to try out their other ship, Valiant Lady. Until then.

Wellness at sea

Expect a Virgin-style makeover to cruise spa and fitness programming. Whether Sailors are into high-intensity workouts, deep breaths in search of nirvana, or if they pay for a gym membership but never use it – Virgin Voyages provide spaces to care for themselves in whichever way works best for them.

Why cruise with Virgin Voyages?

Not wanting to get shipped off with a boat-load of children? While we cater for the young at heart, Virgin Voyages offer strictly adult-only cruises. Sure, the little ones would probably love life at sea, but we want you to discover your inner child – not have to look after one.

The cabins on Virgin Voyages Lady Ships stand out for their flexible furnishings, upgraded bathrooms, and sensory mood lighting, creating comfy quarters that are way more than just a place to crash. Award-winning Walter Knoll, who’s designed thoughtful and sustainable furniture for over 150 years, is responsible for specially engineering and handcrafting our transformative Seabed in Germany. Sailors can enjoy their cabin in two distinct ways, as a place to revel or a place to relax.  A luxurious loungey space transforms into an expansive bedroom with a queen size bed in one swift movement. The transformation can be executed by the sailor or by one of our crew.

Booking any suite unlocks access to Richard's Rooftop; an exclusive sun deck where elegance meets exuberance. A lavish, elaborate and members-only outdoor space for RockStar Quarters Sailors to bask under the sun or have a drink under the stars. Think VIP Rockstar service, chilled vibes, cool tunes, sophisticated loungers and being surrounded by dichroic glass casting stunning rainbow reflections through the rooftop.

If you thought cruise food was buffets and queues – think again. Virgin Voyages have ditched buffets and pre-set dining times to bring Sailors made-to-order food and leisurely brunches from 20+ unique eateries. All the food is  included  - meaning no exclusive spots you have to pay to get into.  From Korean BBQ, pizza shops, Mediterranean mezze and Mexican restaurants through to a legendary drag queen brunch, Virgin Voyages’ 24-hour food and beverage service is always made to order with a wide selection of restaurants and dining.

No more single-use plastics is just the start of Virgin Voyages’ commitment to sustainable sailing. Newly-built, state-of-the-art and eco-friendly cruise ships use cutting-edge technology so you can concentrate on leaving your footprints in the sand and not on the planet.

Still not impressed? Virgin Voyages use Azipod propulsion technology to reduce fuel consumption by 15 per cent and has partnered with Swedish cleantech experts, Climeon, to convert heat from ship engines back into electricity, helping reduce carbon dioxide emissions.

To complement artist Toby Tinsley’s revolutionary ship design, Virgin Voyages partnered with world-renowned interior designer Tom Dixon’s Design Research Studio; New York’s Roman and Williams (The Ace Hotel and the Standard Highline); Concrete Amsterdam (Citizen M and Hotel Zoku), and Softroom in London to reimagine the modern luxury cruise experience.

From the VIP rooftop, club lounge and sky rooms, which use dichroic rainbow-effect glass, through to the world’s first onboard tattoo parlour – Virgin Voyages ships boast theatrical spaces with a sense of drama and fun throughout.

The ‘Vitamin Sea’ ethos not only focuses on the wellbeing of the ocean but also that of its sailors. With a selection of onboard programmes, including sunrise and sunset yoga sessions, you’ll find more than enough things to help you detox (and retox).

If the idea of letting those abs go without a plank for a few days is enough to make you walk one, take a step inside Athletic Club. Resembling a 1920s New York sports club, sailors can hit the outdoor training zone, boxing ring and gym, or head outside to set PBs on The Runway running track.

Not quite your idea of relaxation? No problem. Redemption, the ship’s spa, will transport you to an underwater cave complete hydrotherapy pool, mud room, salt room, cold plunge pools, quartz beds and rejuvenating treatments.

From the glamourous Wake restaurant, with its high-end surf ‘n’ turf, through to Razzle Dazzle, the vegan/vegetarian restaurant and juice bar - with over 20 restaurant and dining options on board, Virgin Voyages ships cater for all tastes.

If you’re wanting to brush up on your culinary classics, The Test Kitchen is one not to miss. Foodies will love the cooking classes, mixology school and coffee labs – not to mention midnight feasts and late-night lock ins!

For a more chilled beach-club vibe, check out The Dock, serving Mediterranean small plates, salads, dips and mezzes or head to The Galley, modelled on food halls and featuring shops and food carts.

As the sun sets, you’ll probably be looking for something livelier to keep you entertained into the small hours. Signature nightclub The Manor takes inspiration from one of our original Virgin Music recording studios – make sure to pack your dancing shoes.

Finally, what better way to commemorate your time on board than by heading to Squid Ink, where tattoo artist Lou Rubino Jr has hand-picked two resident tattooists to make sure those memories never fade.

Virgin Atlantic Holidays is the only place where you can book the full Virgin Voyages package – Virgin Atlantic flights, hotels and your Virgin Voyage cruise – all in one place.

Are adults-only cruise ships boring?

Here are a few things you might not know about 21-and-over cruise lines

Erika Mailman

Cruise ships are great for all ages, but we get that sometimes you might want only the adult version of loud. Adults-only cruises let you be more openly sexual and swear like a sailor around (actual) sailors, but does the experience get boring after a while? After focusing on cocktails and dating, do you miss the silly characters and kid-based extras? As reported by WanderWisdom and MSN , there for sure are tradeoffs, but it’s worth it to ride on an adults-only cruise. That’s according to Jack Nolan who posts on TikTok about working for Virgin Voyages, a 21+ cruise line.

First, let’s dwell on the negatives; it’s Monday. Virgin Voyages doesn’t have kid-based features like rock walls, water slides , and wave machines in the pool ...and those are things you still like as an adult. Nor will you have Minnie Mouse circulating around the ship waving at you in her starched red skirt, but that loss is easier to swallow.

Instead, you’ll swap out those kid standards for pub crawls between various onboard bars, drag performances, sex advice comedy shows, vibrators for sale in the commissary, and tattoo parlors (get an anchor! You’re at sea!). On Virgin’s Valiant Lady , a sex advice show led by a psychologist required audience members to wear an Eyes Wide Shut carnival face mask and possibly be pulled into participating, reports Escape.com . And while you lose the thrill of a waterslide, you can get your heart rate up at expanded exercise options, like The Runway running track to work off all those fruit-based drinks.

And the biggest change, of course, is that you are probably not seeing others having tantrums or melting down because they didn’t get what they wanted and are resisting their naptime. (On the other hand, adults seem to get into fistfights and throw beer bottles, so maybe seeing Caillou’s counterparts whine is not that bad).

All of Virgin Voyages' four ships are adults-only: the Scarlet Lady , the Valiant Lady , the Resilient Lady and the Brilliant Lady . As the company’s website says, “Sure, the little ones would probably love life at sea, but we want you to discover your inner child—not have to look after one.” While you decide whether you’d rather cruise with or without kids, here’s a little help on what to pack in your suitcase—or is that too much like mom advice?

Virgin Voyages says no kids on the ocean. And the kids aren’t pleased.

Richard Branson launched Virgin Voyages to create an adults only cruise experience at sea — a place where adults, including moms and dads, could set out on the open ocean unanchored from all the responsibilities back at home. You know, like waking up at 5 am because both of your children had something extremely important to tell you (the twist? It wasn’t important).

What no one, including Richard, could see coming? The backlash from the kids. The sugar-induced uproar of the children who can’t come on board. And even the petitions ( which Richard can tell you all about in his blog ).

Have a look below and see exactly how the kids feel about us being exclusively adult.

Looking for the ultimate adults only vacation, without kids—your own or anyone else's? Book your next cruise vacation on Virgin Voyages.

Introducing Virgin Voyages: A New Adults Only Cruise Line

The world of ocean cruising is about to be turned upside down – and I am here for it! In October 2021, after MANY months of anticipation, Virgin Voyages, an adults-only cruise line, will be setting sail with its first ship, the Scarlet Lady. But you might be wondering, what is Virgin Voyages and how is this new cruise line different?

Virgin Voyages, New Adults Only Cruise Line

A New Adults only Cruise Line: Virgin Voyages

I am set to sail on Virgin Voyages’ Scarlet Lady in January of 2022, and just toured her during the September 2021 New York City showcase. I have also completed all agent training (to date) on the Virgin Voyages brand . Of course, I cannot wait to sail this incredible new cruise line!

What is Virgin Voyages?

You are probably already familiar with the Virgin brand – the Virgin Atlantic airline , and Virgin hotel chain created by the iconic Sir Richard Branson. Last May I stayed at the Virgin Hotel Dallas , and it was such a fun experience! Great service, fun decor and amazing food – Just like my experience on this newest cruise line !

Virgin Voyages is a new cruise line for adults ONLY (age 18+).

Virgin is aiming to be a floating boutique hotel catering to sophisticated adults who like whimsical touches, but the finer things in life. So this is not some crazy spring break/Girls Gone Wild ship, in fact the target audience is around age 45!

The inspiration for the ships is boutique glamor, much like sailing on a well-appointed yacht (although these ships are huge!). Sophisticated with elevated food, making guests feel like a rock star for their vacation. Virgin is committed to the best emblements of luxury products (the service, quality, and attention to detail) but in a less formal and stiff environment.

Scarlet Lady, the first Virgin Voyages ship

As an adults only ship, all the spaces are for grown ups to play! There are basketball courts, outdoor fitness equipment, a huge gym, group fitness space, tons of bars, and hot tubs everywhere. The food and entertainment is also created ONLY for adults.

Virgin Voyages is setting out to do things differently- and in turn attract a wider audience of both seasoned cruisers, and first timers as well. It seems like they have taken the best of cruising and elevated it. All while taking what folks don’t love about cruising, and turned it on its head!

What makes Virgin Voyages Different?

Besides being adults only, there are several differences that veteran ocean cruisers will notice right away. Here is a list of things that make Virgin Voyages unique:

  • No buffets – that’s right, all restaurants are ala carte, and there are even some food-truck type eateries for a quick meal or snack.
  • No set main dining tables and times , and no specialty restaurant upcharges – All of the Virgin Voyages’ restaurants are in fact specialty restaurants, open to all sailors on board. For dinner, you can make a reservation (or walk in and maybe wait a bit) just like you could at your favorite neighborhood eatery. On board the inaugural ship, The Scarlet Lady, you will find Mexican, Italian, Vegetarian, and a Steakhouse restaurant… just to name a few! On a 5, 6, 7 night voyage, you will have a new place to eat every night of your stay, with whoever you want, at whatever time fits your schedule.
  • Longer port stays – Virgin Voyage sailors will enjoy late nights at the Beach Club at Bimini and overnights in Ibiza. This will allow you to really explore the destination!
  • In most cabins, the beds convert to sofas for additional living space during the day. This is applicable in interior rooms, sea view (porthole) and sea terrace (balcony). The larger suites have couches and additional seating next to the bed.
  • No drink packages – just reasonable priced beer, wine and cocktails. This allows you to spend YOUR money on whatever type of drink YOU want. No restrictions, and also no tips above the listed price. Most cruise lines do add an auto gratuity to anything you purchase on board. On Virgin Voyages, a $9 glass of wine, costs just that – NINE DOLLARS. Also worth noting, about 47% of their drinks cost less than $10!
  • Tattoo Parlor and Blow Dry Bar on board – what other ship has these?
  • Free WIFI – Yes, all guests can access free WIFI. Suite guests can enjoy premium WIFI.
  • No gratuities – the service charges are already included in your cruise fare – see below.
  • Many cabins for solo travelers (and no single supplement on these rooms). On the Scarlet Lady there are 46 solo cabins – six with a sea view and forty interior. Pay a fair price for one guest and enjoy the solace of your own oasis at sea!

Solo Insider Cabin on Virgin Voyages

Is Virgin Voyages All-Inclusive?

Like mentioned above, Virgin Voyages has a different payment model than some traditional cruise lines, but like most mass-market ocean cruises, it is not quite all inclusive.

So you might be wondering, what IS included with your Virgin Voyages cruise? Again, Virgin’s goal is to not nickel and dime the sailors, and Virgin’s philosophy is that anything you have to pay “extra” for, should be worth it.

I like that!

What’s Included with Virgin Voyages:

All gratuities – this is huge! Usually its $13-$17 per person, PER DAY in shipboard gratuities but this is already included in your cabin fare. There is also no automatic gratuity on beverages. I heard there is also no cash tipping allowed on board (like at Sandals or Beaches) but I would like to see how this does in fact play out.

Whats Included with Virgin Voyages Cruise

Wi-Fi – Included for all both on board and at the Bimini Beach Club. I would like to think I live in a world where I can go 5-7 days without internet, but let’s be realistic here. Plus having wi-fi makes a work-cation at sea possible!

Group Fitness Classes – This is also a place where some lines upcharge, but with Virgin Voyages, it’s all included.

Soft drinks – On most cruise lines (with the exception of Disney Cruise Line ) soft drinks are NOT included with your cruise fare. But on Virgin Voyages they are.

Virgin Voyages Soda machine

All Dining – Yes, all on board dining venues are included, no upcharge restaurants!

Virgin Voyages Food

Planning a cruise can be tough. There are so many cruise lines, some are big, some are small, all include different things!  Of course, there is your budget to consider as well!

For those reasons, it’s always best to consult with a travel professional to help find the perfect cruise for you next vacation. And the best part? My services are free!

Long Island Travel Agent

Who should book Virgin Voyages?

Sailing on a cruise line catering to adults only would be the perfect vacation for social groups, bachelor/bachelorette parties, destination weddings or girlfriend getaways!

But honestly, if you are 18 or over, Virgin Voyages has something for you – whether you want to party all night or tuck away in a corner with a good book, I am confident you will enjoy the Virgin Experience.

Virgin Voyages adults only cruise line deck 7

And I’m not just saying that! A Virgin Voyage is YOUR cruise in a sophisticated but relaxed environment. You can do it how you want! Want to sleep in? Great, there are still fitness classes offered all day and afternoon. Want to get up early and seize the day? How about sunrise yoga at dawn? That’s just one example of how Virgin can meet the needs of all its sailors – so you can enjoy YOUR vacation.

Virgin Voyages Lingo

Of course when shaking up an entire industry, you need a whole new vernacular to go with it! Virgin does things their way, including some new lingo. If you need to translate from Virgin Voyages to English, here is a translation guide:

Sea Terrace     =          Balcony Cabin

Sea View          =          Porthole Cabin

Sailors              =          Cruisers

First Mates      =          Travel Agents

PS Virgin Voyages loves travel agents and just like the first mate supports the captain, they know agents are the way to go when booking a cruise !

Sailor Loot       =          On Board Credit

Bar tab              =          Monies in your account for drink purchases

Aquatic Club    =          Pool Area

Richard’s Rooftop =    Private sun deck area for Suite guests

Sea Blazer       =          A 2021 sailor

Circle               =          Social Groups Cruising together

Rock Star Agent   =       Concierge service for suite guests (kind of like a butler)

Three New Virgin Voyages’ Ships

I am sailing the Scarlet Lady in January 2022, and I toured the ship in September 2021 when it was docked in NYC for a few days.  I will be getting out a full review of that ship (it needs its own blog post).

After its stint in New York, the Scarlet Lady will sail down to Miami where it will be doing 4-7 night sailings in the Caribbean. With itineraries like Mayan Sol and Dominican Daze, there are different voyages each week. But each Caribbean sailing will stop at the Beach Club at Bimini, Virgin’s private beach club in the Bahamas . Bimini sounds awesome, and I cannot wait to go – will have to do a full review on that after I visit in January!

Virgin Voyages Aft Balcony

In March 2022, the second ship, the Valiant Lady will debut, sailing Spring/Summer 2022 in the Mediterranean out of Barcelona. These are the itineraries that will include an overnight in Ibiza! I cannot wait to book one of these for myself.

In August 2022, the third Virgin Voyage’s ship will premier – the Resilient Lady who will be sailing the Southern Med out of Athens!

So lots of great things to look forward to in Virgin Voyages’ future.

Tips for Sailing Virgin Voyages: What to know Before You Sail

Having toured the ship, having done all the trainings for Virgin Voyages, and having attended countless webinar trainings on the brand, I can offer you some tips to maximize your cruise experience on Virgin Voyages:

  • Download the Virgin Voyages app and pre-book as much as you can. There are so many fun things on board you don’t want to be shut out. Through the app, you can also order on demand food, to be delivered anywhere on the ship (They had this at Virgin Dallas it was awesome)
  • Speaking of the app – open it, shake and champagne will appear. For reals – try it!
  • Book more than 180 days in advance to receive an automatic 10% discount on your cruise.
  • Pay in full over 180 days in advance to receive an ADDITIONAL 10% discount on your sailing. You can combine these two promotions
  • Book a sailing to sail in 2021 to become a Virgin Sea Blazer – this means you will receive a bonus $125 bar tab on your $300 bar tab purchase, on every cruise you take, FOR LIFE! No limits!
  • Consider booking one of the many suites – you get so many great perks including premium Wi-Fi, 24/7 concierge service, private airport transfers in Miami, access to Richard’s Rooftop, VIP Access at the Beach Club at Bimini, and Priority Access to everything you can pre-book.

Check out my full ship tour:

On a professional, and personal level, I am so excited about this new age of cruising and the introduction of Virgin Voyages to the mass market, ocean cruising scene. I cannot wait to go, and even better get YOU all booked on board. I know my clients are going to love sailing the Virgin way!

The best adults-only cruises to try if you can’t stand being around kids on vacation

What are the best adults-only cruises — the ones that not only ban kids but cater to grown-up tastes and interests?

You may be asking because you just spent time on a megaship where the kids took over the pools and hot tubs (not to mention the elevators), much to your chagrin. Or, you might be looking for a vacation with more lectures and less limbo, or perhaps a cruise that skews more R-rated than G.

The list of cruises for adults only is, alas, very short. Only a handful of cruise lines ban children from their ships and promise cruises for grown-ups — perhaps the most notable being cruise newcomer Virgin Voyages and fast-growing Viking .

The trend in recent years in cruising is, in fact, more family-focused, with more kids appearing on ships of all types. Indeed, some of the biggest, best-known cruise brands have gone full-bore after the family market , to the extent that the sun-soaked top decks of their ships sometimes can feel more like a scene out of "Daddy Day Care" than a blissful vacation retreat.

For more cruise guides, tips and news, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Don't despair, though. Even as many lines double down on the family market, a small group of cruise operators remains all-in on the idea of adult-only cruises.

Here are our picks for the best adults-only cruise lines, with a grown-up vibe to boot.

Virgin Voyages

The much-ballyhooed new line from Sir Richard Branson's Virgin Group has banned children under the age of 18 from its ships. It's part of an effort to create a hipper, more-sophisticated, adult-focused vibe that company leaders think is sorely lacking in the cruise world.

"We have done a ton of research really trying to create a sophisticated experience," Virgin Voyages CEO Tom McAlpin said in the days before the line's 2021 debut . "I've done some personal research. We found that when you put kids in the pool, they scream, and we don't want that."

Related: I've been on more than 150 cruise ships. Here's what I thought of Scarlet Lady

Virgin Voyages' first three adults-only cruise ships, the 2,770-passenger Scarlet Lady and sister vessels Valiant Lady and Resilient Lady , cater to grown-ups looking for a decidedly adult sort of fun with such offerings as interactive dance parties and a drag queen performance. It also offers a karaoke lounge with pink-and-purple karaoke rooms and a tattoo parlor (read about how one of our staffers was among the first to get inked on board ).

What you won't find on the three ships (a fourth is due later this year) are waterslides, watery splash zones, teen lounges and all the other family-friendly features that are becoming so common on bigger ships.

To create an adults-only cruise experience, Virgin Voyages took a page from fast-growing Viking 's playbook. Viking's 12-ship ocean cruise division has banned children under the age of 18 since it debuted in 2015. In addition, its 80-ship river cruise division has had a minimum age limit for more than two decades. (Initially, the cut-off was age 12; as of 2019, that jumped to 18, too.)

Not that Virgin and Viking are anything alike. Virgin is designed to appeal to millennials and older travelers who want to party like they are millennials. Viking, by contrast, is the anti-millennial line.

Viking's target market is squarely in the 55-plus bracket. It zeroes in on that demographic with an upscale, destination-focused experience that is heavy on what the industry likes to call "enrichment" — onboard lectures and other learning opportunities. It also emphasizes tours focused on history and culture (with at least one free excursion in each port) and entertainment offerings that veer more toward string quartets than dancers in string bikinis.

"What we're looking to do is try not to be everything for everyone," Viking's executive vice president of marketing, Richard Marnell, told TPG. "We do not have a kids' program. What we have is . . . [an] immersive experience that is best suited for people that are intellectually curious."

P&O Cruises

This storied British line clearly sees the demand for adults-only cruise ships, but it isn't giving up on the family market, either. The line splits the difference between the two segments. Five of its seven vessels (Arvia, Iona, Britannia, Ventura and Azura) are marketed as "family-friendly" and open to passengers of all ages. The other two (Arcadia and Aurora) are reserved exclusively for adults.

Given that more than 95% of the Southampton, England-based cruise line's passengers are British, you'll probably want to be either British yourself or a major Anglophile to consider booking one of the latter two vessels. Sailing with P&O Cruises is a very British experience, something that becomes clear the moment you see its vessels. They feature hulls painted with massive Union Jacks.

In addition, you'll find quintessentially British offerings on board P&O Cruises ships, such as elaborate afternoon teas, quoits on the top deck and restaurant menus designed by chefs big in the United Kingdom, such as Marco Pierre White.

That said, if you're a Princess Cruises fan, you might feel right at home on a P&O Cruises ship. Nestled under the same corporate umbrella, the two brands are longtime sisters that have swapped ships back and forth (though Holland America fans might be interested to know that Arcadia actually shares a ship design with that line's Vista class).

For booking purposes, P&O Cruises considers anyone who will be 18 or older when sailing an adult.

Saga Cruises

Like P&O Cruises, Saga Cruises is a British line that has honed in on the business of offering voyages just for adults. But it goes way beyond what P&O Cruises or any other line does in shunning younger travelers. The minimum age at Saga Cruises isn't 18 or even 21 — it's 50.

That's right — you won't find a single millennial or even that many Generation Xers on board a Saga Cruises ship (at 58, even the oldest members of Generation X only make the cut-off by eight years). You will find a heck of a lot of baby boomers, many of them retired.

Saga Cruises operates just two ocean vessels, sailing exclusively out of the U.K., plus several river ships. Like P&O Cruises, it's a product that is probably best for British travelers or big-time Anglophiles.

Other adult-focused cruises

In addition to lines that ban passengers under the age of 18 outright, a number of cruise operators allow young children but get relatively few of them.

Examples include such upscale lines as Regent Seven Seas Cruises , Silversea Cruises and Seabourn , which cater heavily to an older crowd. Small-ship specialist Windstar Cruises allows tweens and teenagers on its six ships, but it doesn't allow any children under the age of 8.

Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours, which sells both ocean and river cruises, traditionally discourages customers from bringing passengers under the age of 12 on vessels except during Christmas holiday sailings.

Also, the longer the cruise, the fewer children you will find. Book a two-plus-week sailing to a more exotic location, like Asia or South America, during the school year on a line like Holland America or Princess, and you'll share the ship predominantly with adults.

The 9 best gay cruises for 2024 (+ planning tips).

Embark on an all-gay or LGBTQ-friendly cruise for excellent entertainment, food and excursions.

Whether you are looking to hop aboard a Pride Week cruise with a major line or sail away with a smaller company that specializes in LGBTQ voyages, the following cruise operators promise a fun, safe and memorable vacation.

(Note: While many of these cruise lines sail to LGBTQ-friendly ports of call, travelers should research destinations to learn more about cultures, customs and safety in each location and determine what's right for them.)

Travelers lounge on a gay cruise with VACAYA

Gabriel Goldberg | Courtesy of VACAYA

Founded by avid travelers Randle Roper, Patrick Gunn and John Finen, VACAYA bills itself as the first all-LGBT travel company in the full-ship charter/resort buyout sector of the travel industry to launch in more than 25 years.

"[VACAYA] was sparked by our own vacations, where we all had encountered two very different experiences," says Gunn. "The all-gay cruises were liberating, empowering and fun, but limited to a small spectrum of people. And while everyone loves a good time, there's more to a memorable vacation than just parties. Mainstream vacations offered more activities and destinations, and were accessible to a diverse set of people, but didn't always feel like a friendly, judgment-free environment."

As such, VACAYA set out to bring LGBTQ travelers from across the spectrum together in a welcoming, inclusive setting, while offering varied onboard activities and immersive itinerary options. Cruisers will enjoy traveling to ports around the world, in the Caribbean , the Galápagos, Europe , Antarctica and more. You can participate in shipwide events ranging from themed deck parties to performances by LGBTQ entertainers to rejuvenating yoga classes. Note that VACAYA's cruises are for adults only.

Previous cruisers had abundant praise for VACAYA's voyages, highlighting the company's responsiveness when booking and the kindhearted staff, as well as the genuine connections they made with other passengers on board. Many were also impressed by the events and entertainment options throughout their sailings.

In 2024, VACAYA will offer a number of voyages worldwide. The seven-night Caribbean Cruise on Celebrity Apex in February will sail round-trip from Fort Lauderdale, with several fun-filled days at sea in addition to stops in Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Antigua. In August, VACAYA has a 12-night river cruise in Northern Europe on board Advance by Transcend Cruises; this sailing includes the Amsterdam Pride event. The 11-night Antarctica expedition on Atlas Ocean Voyages' World Navigator in December 2024 is sold out, but you can join the waitlist.

The Virgin brand has long been known for its celebration of the LGBTQ community, and cruise line Virgin Voyages is no different. The strictly adults-only cruise operator aims to provide a unique experience, with onboard tattoo parlors, impressive live entertainment, and dining options that include more than 20 eateries and menus created by Michelin star chefs. This line gets the stamp of approval from previous LGBTQ cruisers, who praise the ships' gender-neutral bathrooms, diverse staff and onboard shows with resident drag queens.

Virgin Voyages offers gay-specific sailings through travel companies like Atlantis Events, but its more mainstream itineraries still offer a welcoming, inclusive atmosphere that attracts LGBTQ cruisers year-round. Virgin hosts a number of events during Pride Month each year, including deck parties and interactive social media campaigns.

"Each June here at Virgin Voyages, we like to go big for Pride Month with larger-than-life events … all monthlong," the cruise line says in a statement on its website. "It's an important time for us – both internally within our crew and for our sailors – to honor and celebrate the LGBTQ community; who for so long has had to continually fight for equality and the right to be seen, heard and included."

Virgin Voyages sails to a variety of LGBTQ-friendly countries, including New Zealand, Greece and Spain. In June 2024, consider a seven-night sailing aboard Scarlet Lady departing from Barcelona with stops in Marseille and Cannes in France as well as Spain's Palma de Mallorca and Ibiza.

The world's largest gay and lesbian travel brand, Atlantis Events was founded in 1991 and welcomes more than 20,000 travelers annually on LGBTQ vacations. For its all-gay cruises, Atlantis charters megaships from popular lines like Royal Caribbean International , Norwegian Cruise Line and Virgin Voyages in addition to smaller vessels with companies like Oceania Cruises so cruisers will have a fully immersive experience.

On board, travelers can enjoy all the perks these ships have to offer (think: pools, hot tubs, sports courts and plenty of dining choices), plus special events like drag performances, motivational speakers, LGBTQ movies on demand in each cabin and high-energy circuit parties across the ship.

"As an LGBTQ cruiser, you're looking for a ship with lots of entertainment, including dance parties and events," says Marcos Martinez, founder of Men Who Brunch, a Black gay lifestyle blog. "One of the best cruise [lines] for gay cruising is Atlantis, since you'll be able to meet hundreds of attractive men and party all day and night on the ship."

Atlantis hosts primarily gay men; women make up about 5% to 10% of bookings, according to the Atlantis website. Previous cruisers said the atmosphere on board was fun, friendly and welcoming, though some noted that the company's customer service could be better, especially when it comes to details about the cruise.

Due to the company's popularity, its three 2024 cruises are already sold out.

Travelers on an all-gay cruise with Brand g Vacations pose in front of the Taj Mahal

Courtesy of Brand G Vacations

Specializing in all-gay river cruises – and now luxury ocean liners – Brand g Vacations was founded in 2011 and explores destinations all over the world. Chartered river cruises typically welcome between 40 and 200 LGBTQ passengers (and their straight allies), which allows cruisers to get to know one another in a smaller setting. Guests tend to skew more mature (think: 40 and older), and the line attracts both men and women.

Onboard entertainment differs slightly from larger ocean voyages: Expect more cabaret-style entertainment than massive all-night dance parties. Cruisers will also enjoy performances by drag queens, gay Broadway stars and more, on top of typical river cruise perks like sightseeing and lavish meals. Past guests recommend choosing Brand g if you're looking for a well-planned, relaxed and luxurious experience over a busier, more party-heavy vacation.

Brand g aims to provide a nearly all-inclusive cruise experience , with Mercedes or small van airport transfers, upscale hotel stays prior to embarkation, and unlimited alcoholic beverages as well as meals included in the fare. As such, prices tend to be on the high end. Plus, cruisers can feel good about their trip knowing that Brand g donates to causes in the U.S. and around the world that assist LGBTQ refugees, AIDS organizations, LGBTQ centers and more.

In 2024, Brand g sails through unique waterways around the world, including the Amazon, the Loire, the Danube, the Mekong, and the Columbia and Snake rivers in the Pacific Northwest. The line's small cruise ship charters also take guests to Iceland, Spain, Morocco, Italy, Croatia and other European destinations.

Aerial shot of Celebrity Cruises ship Celebrity Apex at sunset

Courtesy of Celebrity Cruises

Celebrity Cruises sets the scene for an excellent vacation for gay travelers, from its extravagant annual Pride parties to its daily LGBTQ programming throughout the year. The mainstream line has received numerous awards for its inclusivity, receiving accolades from the Cruizie Awards, TTG Travel Awards and Travel Weekly's Magellan Awards for being one of the best cruise lines for LGBTQ passengers.

LGBTQ cruisers can start their vacations off on a high note with a special welcome party on the first night of their voyage to meet other travelers on board. After night one, there are other social events for gay cruisers to party and hang out together. Additionally, Celebrity Cruises was the first cruise line to legally marry a couple at sea in 2018, and it continues to perform same-sex marriages on its ships.

Past cruisers enjoyed their voyages with Celebrity, noting that the line was welcoming, the food was delicious, and there were plenty of areas to hang out as a group with fellow LGBTQ passengers or other companions throughout the ship.

Although all itineraries are gay-friendly, consider booking a sailing during Pride Month in June for an extra special experience. Onboard entertainment during this month includes guest entertainers, a flag raising ceremony, Celebrity's signature Pride Party at Sea and more. The Italian Riviera & France cruise will depart from Barcelona on June 8, 2024, on the new Celebrity Ascent; this 10-night Mediterranean sailing stops at ports in France, Italy and Malta. Private travel companies like VACAYA also charter Celebrity ships for all-gay voyages throughout the year.

Specifically marketed toward lesbians and LGBTQ women, Olivia has hosted more than 350,000 travelers by land and sea over five decades. Cruisers can choose between river voyages or ocean sailings to destinations around the world. On the lesbian cruises, expect a mix of nostalgic decade-themed dance parties, folk singers, writing workshops, karaoke and other activities. Cruisers can also relax poolside, spend some time in the onboard spa or take it easy in one of the ships' lounges.

Travelers who are looking to connect with others who share similar backgrounds can do so in one of Olivia's specialized programs. There are group and solo traveler meetups, as well as programs like Sisters, which is for LGBTQ women of color; Gen-O, for cruisers 40 and younger; Women in Uniform gatherings, for veterans and those currently in the armed forces; and events for OWLs (which stands for "older, wiser lesbians"). Past cruisers on Olivia's voyages report feeling a true sense of community and belonging on board, resulting in a fun, carefree trip.

In June 2024, set sail with Olivia from Edinburgh, Scotland, to Dublin on Windstar Cruises' Star Legend. Or, visit the islands of Tahiti on the line's Star Breeze in September. Other cruise itineraries include Alaska, the Greek Isles, Mexico and the Panama Canal.

Aerial shot of Royal Caribbean International cruise ship

Courtesy of Royal Caribbean International

Royal Caribbean International provides a welcoming and inclusive experience for LGBTQ travelers. The popular cruise line frequently partners with Atlantis Events to offer all-gay voyages throughout the year, but even the standard sailings earn praise.

Highlights of the sailings are the ships' entertainment options (including the Tony Award-winning musical "Mamma Mia!") and attentive staff, according to past cruisers. Itineraries typically include LGBTQ meetups at the beginning of each cruise for gay travelers to meet like-minded passengers. Outside of the sailing experience, Royal Caribbean has also publicly committed to supporting the LGBTQ community throughout the year, and it was the first cruise line to earn the title "Gay Traveler Approved" from GayTravel in 2016.

In 2024, consider a Royal Caribbean voyage that sails to gay-friendly destinations. "Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, [is] full of gay bars, clubs and gay beaches," says Martinez. Hop aboard Navigator of the Seas in May for a seven-night sailing round-trip from Los Angeles that stops in Cabo San Lucas, Puerto Vallarta and Ensenada, Mexico. Navigator of the Seas also hosts a seven-night itinerary throughout the year that calls on Mazatlan, Mexico, as well.

A party on board The Cruise With La Demence

Courtesy of The Cruise With La Demence

According to past cruisers, if you're looking for one of the best party scenes on the open seas, consider an all-gay cruise with La Demence. Powered by a popular gay nightclub in Brussels with the same name, La Demence – French for "the madness" – primarily caters to a European crowd. Most passengers are male, though women are also welcome.

On board, passengers should expect to dance the night away at massive deck parties that last into the wee hours of the morning. The line prides itself on its top-notch DJs, impressive light setup and electric party atmosphere. Previous cruisers had high praise for the itineraries – which exclusively visit gay-friendly locations – as well as the fruity cocktails, themed nights (costumes strongly encouraged) and glamorous entertainment. Enjoy unique events like drag bingo, high heel runs and more.

La Demence sails every summer to European destinations like Greece, Italy and Malta. The 2023 cruise was chartered on Royal Caribbean's Explorer of the Seas. Fares include all food and nonalcoholic beverages, plus access to all parties, shows and the onboard gym.

Source Journeys has been planning luxury vacations for LGBTQ travelers for more than 20 years. The Miami-based company, with the vision of founder and chief executive officer Craig Smith, offers small group land tours and full-charter cruises for like-minded travelers with a focus on giving back to the communities they visit. The company also supports LGBTQ organizations, such as the National Gay & Lesbian Task Force and the Human Rights Campaign.

Past guests of their tours say their fellow travelers were as fun and interesting as the destinations. They appreciated the excellent personalized planning for the trips by Smith and his life partner, Rafael Rodriguez.

The company's cruises in 2024 include a seven-night Galápagos sailing in late September on a Relais & Chateau luxury yacht: Ecoventura's new ship, Evolve. The intimate ship accommodates just 20 passengers. Source Journeys is also offering a seven-night river cruise through Burgundy and Provence, France, in June on Avalon Waterways' Avalon Poetry II, as well as a seven-night voyage from Venice along the Dalmatian Coast. This ocean cruise scheduled in August is chartered on Star Clippers' masted sailing ship, Royal Clipper.

Frequently Asked Questions

When it comes to gay cruising, gone are the days of discreet "Friends of Dorothy" meetups. The term – a euphemism that dates back to the 1950s – was once used to indicate gay social events on daily cruise line programs, without explicitly calling out members of the community on board. It's a far cry from today's LGBTQ cruising industry, which loudly and proudly celebrates passengers from all walks of life.

According to experts, LGBTQ cruising is a market that will only continue to grow. Travelers can take their pick between cruise operators tailored specifically to queer communities and major cruise lines that offer festive Pride celebrations and inclusive onboard entertainment. As travel on the high seas continues to grow in popularity for vacationers, gay and lesbian travelers should consider setting sail on a fun-filled cruise vacation for their next trip.

When planning a cruise, vacationers should first consider what their ideal sailing looks like.

Gay-friendly vs. all-gay sailings: Cruisers should think about whether they'd like to travel aboard a gay-friendly mainstream line – such as Celebrity Cruises or Virgin Voyages – or opt for an all-gay, full-ship charter with a third-party vacation company.

"Each and every LGBTQIAPK person has a different level of comfortability in their 'outness,' " says Patrick Gunn, co-founder and chief marketing officer of LGBTQ vacation company VACAYA. Of VACAYA's all-gay charters, he adds, "For one magical week, our community gets to be the majority and live life out loud in the blissful utopia VACAYA creates on a gay cruise. That single change from being an always-minority to a sudden majority can have a profoundly positive real-world effect on individuals."

  • Travel style: Some cruise operators (think: Atlantis Events and La Demence) are known for their electrifying all-night parties, which may be perfect for gay groups of friends. Meanwhile, other companies like VACAYA and Olivia look to provide a more diverse selection of activities, ranging from tea dances (LGBTQ parties that, historically, included tea service) to philanthropic service activities to immersive onshore experiences.
  • Ports of call: Some of the most LGBTQ- and gay-friendly destinations for cruises include: Fort Lauderdale, Florida; Sydney; Barcelona, Spain; Taipei (Keelung), Taiwan; Helsinki; Quebec City; Auckland, New Zealand; Mykonos, Greece; Reykjavik, Iceland; Amsterdam; Tel Aviv, Israel; Buenos Aires, Argentina; and San Francisco. Countries that gay travelers may want to avoid include the Maldives, Jamaica, Morocco, Malaysia and Haiti, as homosexuality is illegal in these destinations.
