The 9 Best New Orleans Voodoo Tours

1. nola voodoo walking tour with high priestess guide in new orleans.

The best Voodoo tour in New Orleans is, hands down, the Nola Voodoo Walking Tour , as a High Priestess of Louisiana Plantation Vodou leads your tour.

The guides have traced their lineage and bloodlines back hundreds of years. Their connection to Voodoo in New Orleans is incredible. This is the perfect tour in New Orleans to learn about Voodoo history.

New Orleans has a lot of Voodoo history, and the tour takes you to Congo Square, the French Quarter and Louis Armstrong Park, where you will hear all about the people who helped create New Orleans Voodoo.

The tour explores misinformation about Voodoo. It goes over how to respect and worship deities, why people leave specific offerings and the truth about Voodoo dolls. If you are interested in Voodoo history in New Orleans and only have time for one tour, make it this one.

The tour also stops at Conjure New Orleans, an occult shop dedicated to Voodoo. I also recommend getting a tarot reading here after the tour.

This is by far the best Voodoo Tour in New Orleans

If you want to learn about New Orleans’s Voodoo history, you must take this tour. The tour is well done and well researched, and the Voodoo history is accurate.

You will leave this tour with a better understanding of Voodoo and learn about people like Sanite Dede, who was an essential person in the Voodoo community before Marie Laveau.

Hottest Hell Tours also does a terrifying Adults Only tour called New Orleans: Ghost, Crime, Voodoo & Vampires .   Alternatively, you can check out the best ghost tours in New Orleans if you are into the city’s paranormal sightings.

Compliance status

Screen-reader and keyboard navigation.

  • Screen-reader optimization: we run a background process that learns the website’s components from top to bottom, to ensure ongoing compliance even when updating the website. In this process, we provide screen-readers with meaningful data using the ARIA set of attributes. For example, we provide accurate form labels; descriptions for actionable icons (social media icons, search icons, cart icons, etc.); validation guidance for form inputs; element roles such as buttons, menus, modal dialogues (popups), and others. Additionally, the background process scans all of the website’s images and provides an accurate and meaningful image-object-recognition-based description as an ALT (alternate text) tag for images that are not described. It will also extract texts that are embedded within the image, using an OCR (optical character recognition) technology. To turn on screen-reader adjustments at any time, users need only to press the Alt+1 keyboard combination. Screen-reader users also get automatic announcements to turn the Screen-reader mode on as soon as they enter the website. These adjustments are compatible with all popular screen readers, including JAWS and NVDA.
  • Keyboard navigation optimization: The background process also adjusts the website’s HTML, and adds various behaviors using JavaScript code to make the website operable by the keyboard. This includes the ability to navigate the website using the Tab and Shift+Tab keys, operate dropdowns with the arrow keys, close them with Esc, trigger buttons and links using the Enter key, navigate between radio and checkbox elements using the arrow keys, and fill them in with the Spacebar or Enter key.Additionally, keyboard users will find quick-navigation and content-skip menus, available at any time by clicking Alt+1, or as the first elements of the site while navigating with the keyboard. The background process also handles triggered popups by moving the keyboard focus towards them as soon as they appear, and not allow the focus drift outside of it.Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Disability profiles supported in our website

  • Epilepsy Safe Mode: this profile enables people with epilepsy to use the website safely by eliminating the risk of seizures that result from flashing or blinking animations and risky color combinations.
  • Visually Impaired Mode: this mode adjusts the website for the convenience of users with visual impairments such as Degrading Eyesight, Tunnel Vision, Cataract, Glaucoma, and others.
  • Cognitive Disability Mode: this mode provides different assistive options to help users with cognitive impairments such as Dyslexia, Autism, CVA, and others, to focus on the essential elements of the website more easily.
  • ADHD Friendly Mode: this mode helps users with ADHD and Neurodevelopmental disorders to read, browse, and focus on the main website elements more easily while significantly reducing distractions.
  • Blindness Mode: this mode configures the website to be compatible with screen-readers such as JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver, and TalkBack. A screen-reader is software for blind users that is installed on a computer and smartphone, and websites must be compatible with it.
  • Keyboard Navigation Profile (Motor-Impaired): this profile enables motor-impaired persons to operate the website using the keyboard Tab, Shift+Tab, and the Enter keys. Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Additional UI, design, and readability adjustments

  • Font adjustments – users, can increase and decrease its size, change its family (type), adjust the spacing, alignment, line height, and more.
  • Color adjustments – users can select various color contrast profiles such as light, dark, inverted, and monochrome. Additionally, users can swap color schemes of titles, texts, and backgrounds, with over 7 different coloring options.
  • Animations – epileptic users can stop all running animations with the click of a button. Animations controlled by the interface include videos, GIFs, and CSS flashing transitions.
  • Content highlighting – users can choose to emphasize important elements such as links and titles. They can also choose to highlight focused or hovered elements only.
  • Audio muting – users with hearing devices may experience headaches or other issues due to automatic audio playing. This option lets users mute the entire website instantly.
  • Cognitive disorders – we utilize a search engine that is linked to Wikipedia and Wiktionary, allowing people with cognitive disorders to decipher meanings of phrases, initials, slang, and others.
  • Additional functions – we provide users the option to change cursor color and size, use a printing mode, enable a virtual keyboard, and many other functions.

New Orleans is rumored to have a strong presence of ghosts and spirits. Some say it's America's most haunted city.

The city’s reputation for its connection to the supernatural has led authors like Anne Rice (“Interview with the Vampire”) to set their stories here.

Some episodes of the hit series “True Blood” take place in New Orleans and for those old enough to remember, the James Bond classic “Live and Let Die” weaved the Voodoo culture of New Orleans into its plot.

When you are in New Orleans, you can do more than read a book or see a movie to experience the macabre. You can take a tour and get up close and personal!

New Orleans offers a variety of tours focusing on Louisiana's haunted past.

These tours take you to some pretty spooky places where your guide will tell you chilling tales about the city's dark history.

Wander After The Wonder: The Story of NOLA Witches and Voodoo Queens

While most Western cultures antagonize the figure of a “witch” – hunting, executing, and bad-naming women who exercise spiritual superiority, Louisiana does the opposite. The state and its spiritual and cultural capital New Orleans embrace the power of its Voodoo Queens both in history and present.

The Rise of NOLA Voodoo Queens

Many explanations are suggested to explain how did New Orleans get to love its witches more than other places in the US. What made the city a compelling setting for the flourishing of voodoo culture and its female leaders?

Voodoo is dubbed as “the black sister of the Catholic church”. It was born with the arrival of enslaved West Africans in Louisiana in the early 18th century. Their religious practices were gradually merged with the Catholic religion. Voodoo Queens and Kings took on the role of spiritual and political leadership.

Louisiana Voodoo, or New Orleans Voodoo, are general terms for a set of spiritual practices, one of the many incarnations of African-based spiritual practices associated with Louisiana Creole people.

As a French and Spanish colony, Louisiana had a reputation of “generous” slaveholders – allowing more freedom of faith to the enslaved people. Unlike the British colonies, in New Orleans, enslaved people were given Sundays off. Weekly gatherings became a Sunday tradition in Congo Square, located next to Louis Armstrong Park, playing music, dancing, and singing.

Some researchers point out to the city’s heritage as a cultural melting pot of European, Native, and West African cultures; others add the religious mixture of Catholic, Protestant, and African Faiths. Some explanations point out to the Caribbean spiritual influences Vodou brought by migrants arriving from Haiti (formerly known as Saint Domingue) during the island’s revolution at the end of the 18th century.

There is also the story of Ursuline nuns who came from France to Louisiana in the 18th century on a mission to promote Christianity through the education of young women. The “side effect” of this missionary work was high rates of literacy among women – an empowering feature in the local gender dynamics.

Another question often asked is regarding the fact that women dominate local voodoo history. Here too are several explanations to the rise of female leadership, comprised of sociopolitical, economic, and demographic factors. Some attribute it to the high numbers of mixed-race relationships between women of color and white men – elevating the former to higher social status.

It wasn’t always a smooth sailing for Voodoo Queens in New Orleans. Sanite Dede, who was operating in the first decades of the 19th century, was accused by the local press of holding orgies in her rituals. As a result of Catholic pressures, the police arrested 400 women for dancing in her yard. Despite the fact that the charges were later dropped, many voodoo practitioners moved out of what was then the city to the swampland, which is now City Park.

Central Women: The Legend, The Killer, The Novelist, and The Anthropologist

The female spirit of New Orleans Voodoo is expressed not only in Voodoo Queens, but also other professionals attracted to the culture.

One to be captured by the New Orleans magic is Zora Neale Hurston , an influential early 20th-century author and anthropologist. In the 1920s, she came for a research-stay in Algiers neighborhood, then the heart of the local black community. She wrote to a fellow writer, “I have landed in the kingdom of Marie Laveau and expect to wear her crown someday”.

Another local female worth mentioning in concern with the NOLA Voodoo culture is Madame Marie Delphine LaLaurie, one of the most infamous serial killers in the US. Locally nicknamed as The Savage Mistress, the elite Creole socialite shocked the world when it was found that she tortured and murdered slaves in her household.

Her former home, The LaLaurie Mansion, is a three-story building on 1140 Royal Street in the French Quarter. It is still rumored to be haunted by cruelty. Through the years, it was used as a music conservatory, a school for girls, apartments, and businesses. Currently privately owned, it serves as a landmark and an attraction for the local ghosts tourists.

Follow The Voodoo: Spells and Ghosts as Tourist Attractions

The New Orleans entrepreneurial spirit gave rise to more than 30 options of guided tours for those curious about voodoo, witchcraft, and ghosts. The variety includes haunted tours, tours for kids, ghost tours, tours on carriages, walking tours, secret tours, witched tours, magic tours, neighborhood tours, spirit tours, and bike tours.

Among the many service providers, stand out two female initiatives: Tours by Judy, which is operated by a former history teacher; and The Voodoo Bone Lady Haunted Tours which also offers an interactive blessing right with a local medium.

* Festivals *

The most important festival in the spirit of New Orleans magic is the annual Voodoo Music + Arts Experience. Since it started, a crowd of more than a million people and dozens of popular music acts made it second only to the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival in attendance figures.

Another relevant happening is French Quarter Festival which will be celebrating 36 years of festivities in April 2020. It offers more than 20 stages throughout the French Quarter, focusing on local music in its full range of diversity.

A smaller production is Anne Rice New Orleans Vampire Ball, organized by Anne Rice’s Vampire Lestat Fan Club. It features a masquerade, live music, “Bazaar Bizarre”, and a Costume Contest. Prepare for the strictly enforced dress code.

Check out WWP’s New Orleans full calendar of events or plan your visit based on the annual events list .

St. Louis Cemetery #1 If one wishes to switch live music for dead silence, New Orleans cemeteries are the answer. It is not unusual for tourists to journey through the tombs at St. Louis Cemetery #1. The graveyard’s main attraction is the tomb of Marie Laveau, the legendary Voodoo Queen of New Orleans.

Visitors are tempted to try the custom to make marks on her grave and ask for her help with a personal wish. In addition to the (now forbidden) marks, her tomb is decorated with candles and pennies.

Marie Laveau’s grave is considered to be the second-most visited in the US, after Elvis Presley’s.

The New Orleans Historic Voodoo Museum The museum presents the mysteries, legends, and traditions of voodoo, mixed into the city’s history. Located in the heart of the French Quarter between Bourbon and Royal Streets, it also offers walking tours.

Three Powerhouse Pop-Up Chefs Plot ‘Filipino Witch Bar’ in French Quarter

Milkfish chef Cristina Quackenbush is joining forces with Anh Luu and Haley Vanvleet for the immersive, mystical new restaurant and absinthe bar in New Orleans

Cristina Quackenbush has been conjuring her roots through her cooking for most of her life. Come summer, she’ll bring a new restaurant that integrates witchcraft, mysticism, and Southeast Asian foodways to the French Quarter. After more than two years of weekly appearances, Quackenbush will wrap her last pop-up meal at Twelve Mile Limit on Thursday, May 2 to make room for a restaurant she’s calling Tatlo, a “Filipino witchy absinthe bar and kitchen serving divine food” behind the Old Absinthe House (240 Bourbon Street).

For the past 12 years, Quackenbush has channeled the bold flavors of “Filipino soul food” through her hugely popular one-time restaurant and current pop-up Milkfish . She’s a whirling dervish of energy, a force for good not just through her plates of chicken adobo and lumpia, but through the nonprofit she co-founded in 2020, Good Trouble Network . The Filipino American chef moved from her Midwest home to New Orleans in 1999 to find a like-minded community in a place that saw the first Filipino settlements in North America in the 1760s.

Tatlo means three in the Tboli language, one of many dialects spoken in the Philippines. Quackenbush is one of three partners in the enterprise. The second is chef Anh Luu, a Vietnamese American and native New Orleanian, former executive chef at Bywater Brew Pub , and pop-up chef with her Vietnamese street food concept Xanh . Luu is also a familiar face from an episode of Season 8 of Queer Eye . The third chef is Hayley Vanvleet, a Cordon Bleu graduate whose resume includes Meauxbar, Curio, Peche, and Belle Epoque , which currently occupies the space that Tatlo is taking over. Vanvleet, who also pops up around town with her rice bowl spot, Smoked Bowls , will bring her skills into the mix both in the kitchen and to the bar’s cocktail program.

So why is Quackenbush bringing a “witchy” bar to the Quarter? “Because I practice witchcraft,” she says. “It’s part of my personal journey that has helped me through a lot of challenges. I’ve dabbled all my life. There have always been powerful spirits in New Orleans, voodoo priestesses, and witches, and there still are today. And absinthe is a powerful spirit all on its own.”

She describes Tatlo as offering a portal to a world where every dish tells a story influenced by the diner’s own yearnings, with a deep connection to the supernatural. “We will be offering our guests immersive experiences through Asian dishes that merge Filipino and Vietnamese culinary traditions with local flavors and cocktails.”

Each diner’s journey begins with a choice of candle color for the table. Red might mean romance, green for wealth, and so on — with a menu tailored to those goals. “This is not just dining,” says Quackenbush. “It’s an immersive trip through the personal, the mystical, the historical, exclusive to the New Orleans experience. Our menu will pay attention to the cycles of the moon, enhancing both the nutritional and mystical properties of our dishes.” The idea is to nourish both the physical and mental well-being of the guest as the dining experience channels the spiritual world.

Quackenbush isn’t sharing what dishes will be offered yet but emphasizes that elements of New Orleans, Filipino, and Vietnamese food will be present and intertwined.

“Every meal will be a ritual of connection and nourishment,” she says. “Witchcraft and supernatural spiritualism are not just facets of my own personal philosophy. They are what’s at the heart of Tatlo.” She promises more details in the coming months, with a soft opening planned for early summer and the full operation in place by fall.

“We want the locals to come back to the Quarter,” Quackenbush says. “There is a mystique there that you just don’t find anywhere else.”
