Wilson Staff FG Tour V2 Iron Review

wilson staff fg tour irons

Editor Review-

Pros- A good blend of forgiveness and workability, the V2 Irons are designed for the golfer wanting it all. The 8620 forging gives a player’s feel while the cavity construction provides added forgiveness. The rounded topline, soft leading edge and weight distribution around the cavity encourages the weekend warrior to play like a pro. Stock KBS shaft is just fantastic and conforming grooves.

Cons- While their stock shaft option is the KBS Tour, the standard length is slightly longer than other manufacturers. Traditional forged players will not like that it is 8620 forging. The higher bounce will turn off sweepers and the shiny chrome can be glaring in certain sun light conditions. A slightly larger club head for a player’s iron.

Bottom Line- I have played everything from Super Game Improvement to pure butter blades and these Wilson Irons will beat them all to the bag. The V2 Irons are one step closer for Wilson Staff being back to their glory days and no longer viewed as a K-Mart special.

FG Tour V2’s are forged from 8620 mild carbon steel, but don’t let that fool you into thinking these are cheaply made. These irons scream detail from their precise weight distribution to the extra padding behind the sweet spot to enhance the feel and are accented by KBS Tour shafts and Lamkin Crossline grips.

These irons are three shades of pretty. The sleek silver and black look is a mixture of class and simplicity. While other irons tend to get busier and busier, the V2 irons have that perfect blend of technology without slapping you in the face with gaudy colors. A thin topline, minimal offset and rounded leading edge make the Wilson FG Tour V2 irons a stellar looking iron for the traditionalist. They offer a slightly higher bounce than some other player’s irons creating a larger sole which might turn some players off, but they are great to reduce excess digging.

The stunning look of the blend of silver and black really goes well with any bag colors. With the irons being forged from 8620 mild carbon steel, the cost is lower than other forged clubs. The heads are on the larger side of a player’s club, but would fall in line with the Titleist AP2 or Ping I20 irons.

Performance/playability-

I tested the V2 against my current irons (Callaway X-Forged ’09) and was blown away by the tighter dispersion with the Wilson Irons. A bit about my swing; I am taller and have a step angle of attack (am a digger for those whom use that term), SS was 89 with 6 iron. My launch angle was 2 degrees higher with the Wilson (16.9*) versus the Callaway (15.1*), and the back spin was 5600 versus 5200 in favor of the V2’s again, but what really surprised me was the dispersion. I was constantly tighter with the Wilson Irons and every guy likes it tight (am I allowed to make that joke?).

I only play a 5 iron as my longest iron, but for testing, I hit the 3 and 4 as well. Even the 3 was easy to get air born with control. The irons are pretty traditional loft (47* PW) for a player’s club and are easy to flight. If you like to move the ball up and down or left and right, you should have no problem with these irons. The slightly larger club head also encourages confidence when you set up behind the ball.

Feel is very subjective so just believe that these things are fantastic. If Fabio hit these irons, he would say “I can’t believe they’re not blades” then flap his hair across his chest. A strategically placed hunk of mild carbon 8620 steel right behind the sweet spot doesn’t hurt either. When you hit these things in the center, you have to look down to make sure you actually hit the ball. I really liked the sound as well. While not Muira forging, the V2’s have a muted sound through impact while still giving solid feedback on off center hits as you would expect from a player’s club. Accented with KBS Tour shafts as stock, these irons just belong in your bag.

Overall bottom line-

Some people just really want the game to be much harder than it has to be and if you are that person, stay away from these. However, if you want a player’s iron with GI characteristics that help you take money from your playing partners…give these a try. I played the FG Tour irons for a while and these are definitely a step up. To put it simply:

Wilson Staff? SERIOUSLY!

Best irons in golf of 2024: Most technology packed

wilson staff fg tour irons

In our effort to assemble the 2024 best irons, we have again compiled an expert panel of fitters to help you find out which of the 2024 irons is best for your game.

Ultimately the best way to find your personal best iron set is to work with a professional fitter using a launch monitor. The difficult part is a lot of people don’t have easy access to fitters, launch monitors, and club builders — so at GolfWRX, we have done a lot of the work for you.

We are in the era of not just maximizing distance but also minimizing the penalty of common misses for each player — this applies to irons just as much as it does with any other club in the bag. And of course, proper set makeup and gapping is essential. This is why, now more than ever, custom fitting is essential to help you see results on every swing you make.

We want to give you the tools and information to go out and find what works best for you by offering recommendations for your individual iron set wants and needs with insight and feedback from the people who work every single day to help golfers get peak performance out of their equipment.

Best irons of 2024: The process

The best fitters in the world see all the options available in the marketplace, analyze their performance traits, and pull from that internal database of knowledge and experience like a supercomputer when they are working with a golfer.

It’s essentially a huge decision tree derived from experience and boiled down to a starting point of options—and it has nothing to do with a handicap!

Modern iron sets are designed into player categories that overlap the outdated “what’s your handicap?” model, and at GolfWRX we believe it was important to go beyond handicap and ask specific questions about the most crucial performance elements fitters are looking at.

These are the best iron categories we have developed to help you determine which category is most important for your swing and game.

Best irons of 2024: The categories

  • Overall performance
  • Easiest to launch/Slower swing speed
  • Pure enjoyment
  • Most technology-packed

2024 Best irons: Most technology packed

wilson staff fg tour irons

This is the “give me everything you got” list. These irons are the cream of the crop for offering technology to improve feel, distance, and ball speed. The great thing about the technology category is it’s not reserved for higher handicap golfers — it’s for anyone looking to get everything they can out of their game in an iron that also suits their eye.

Callaway Paradym Ai Smoke

wilson staff fg tour irons

Their story:  At the core of Callaway’s new Ai Paradym Smoke irons is the Ai Smart Face. With the Ai Smart Face, these irons are designed to promote exceptional distance, tight dispersion into the green, and optimal launch in a modern construction. The new shape consists of longer blade lengths, thinner toplines, and optimized sole widths in a bid to create a forgiving, yet streamlined look at address. In addition, an all-new Dynamic Sole Design features a pre-worn leading edge with variable bounce that cuts through the turf with efficiency.

Fitter comments:

  • “That thing is an absolute rocket launcher. For the guy who flips at it, it’s perfect. It definitely launches lower spins less. it just goes forever compared to, you know, compared to a lot of them that we, that we tested.”
  • “I mean, it’s actually probably one of the cleaner-looking kind of game improvement irons. You know, some of them, they can get kind of beefy, but the look of that one that’s very appealing to the eye. The AI technology that Callaway has been using for a couple of years now, it’s generating a ton of ball speed for guys, but also at a point where they’re still getting a lot of peak heights on it. So it’s not like you feel like you’re just hitting bullets out there.”
  • “If a guy is looking to just hit it far, that’s probably the best thing out there. Callaway’s always had like crazy hot iron faces in that mid-size game improvement-type club. And this is just the next version of it. This thing is crazy fast. Shockingly, for how strong the lofts are, the ball still gets up in the air pretty good.”
  • “When it comes to pure technology the Paradym Ai Smoke iron has it all. Super computers helping engineers design the back of the face based on over 250,000 shots make it an amazing tech iron alone.”
  • “Classic Callaway story with face variability that is AI-driven along with material and design. Tons of tech. With Ai Smart Face and a hollow body design, they make it to the top as far as technology goes.”

TaylorMade P790

wilson staff fg tour irons

Their story: Engineers utilized the variables of tungsten weighting, SpeedFoam Air, and internal mass — with an assist from AI — to precisely give golfers what they need in each iron. For example, launch and forgiveness in the long irons. More specifically, TaylorMade is using what the company calls FLTD CG (flighted CG) to strategically position CG throughout the set (lower in the long irons, higher in the short irons). CG is positioned almost a millimeter lower in the long irons compared to previous generations. In the shorter irons, the higher CG positions allowed engineers to dial in spin and promote accuracy.

  • “Best combination of everything. The amalgamation of all irons on the market blended into one mathematically perfect design.”
  • “I think people recognize the name. It’s a very popular club. It stands up to every model in a category.”
  • “That’s the staple in the players distance category. It’s year-in, year-out. It’s tough to beat TaylorMade — they don’t go wrong with that iron, for sure. They make little refinements, but it’s almost like, yeah, just keep making little refinements. Don’t kind of mess that up just because the, I mean, it, it fits such a wide range of players and it’s just such a good iron that fits a wide, wide range of handicaps.”
  • “I think where TaylorMade kind of struggled over the past is getting that spin on the golf club, and I think each generation it just keeps getting better. I think they did an awesome job.”
  • “If it’s not our best-selling iron in the fitting center, it’s always like number two. It’s such a great, great performer across the board. And yeah, it just keeps getting better every year. It’s really awesome; crazy distance on that thing too.”

Titleist T350

wilson staff fg tour irons

Their story: The new T350 irons are still built for maximum distance and forgiveness, but they were redesigned with a hollow-body construction that’s inspired by the T200. Like the T200, the T350 also uses Max Impact Technology behind the face to maximize speed and forgiveness, and dual-tungsten weights in the back cavity. The T350 irons are noticeably larger, and with thicker toplines, than the T200 irons for golfers who need the additional surface area and stability.

Fitter comments:

  • “The T350 is super good. They definitely cleaned it up, cleaned up that topline a little bit and made it…a little bit more compact, a little bit smaller for sure.”
  • “You know, I think is one of those irons that maybe sometimes can get overlooked. I don’t know…some guys, they think ‘Titleist,’ they can’t hit it. If someone’s in this category, it’s always a club you’re gonna have.”
  • “So like this is the first one in that model that’s had like a forged face and, and, and, and I think that just improved the feel of it. Topline to me looks a little bit cleaner and, they do a nice job of hiding the offset doesn’t look quite obnoxious when you look down at it. I don’t know if it’s like the chrome that they put or whatever, but it looks a lot cleaner at address. The iron’s always been super easy to get up in here.”
  • “That type of customer, I know they all want to do is just hit it nice and far. But we’re seeing so many guys come in that just need help getting it airborne in that moderate kind of clubhead speed category. And this thing is probably, if not the easiest, one of the easiest irons in this category to launch. And I think that’s what makes it so great.”
  • “High launch is a key component to this iron. Clean look, with reduced offset and a better look for a players game improvement iron. Players are surprised that this is a game improvement iron based on the looks and package size.”

Srixon ZX5 Mk II

wilson staff fg tour irons

Their story:  MainFrame v2 was developed with an Automated Intelligence process, flex-maximizing variable thickness pattern of grooves, channels, and cavities carefully milled into the backside of ZX5 iron faces for high ball speeds. Not only does MainFrame boost COR, but it also repositions mass away from the face and into the toe and sole for a lower CG for easier launch, more consistency, and forgiveness.

  • “I’m a big believer in the V-Sole. For high-speed guys who want a little forgiveness and are steep, it just doesn’t stick in the ground. Super soft and high launching. Not a ton of offset. It’s also been a good fit for moderate-to-high handicappers.”
  • “So I would say it, it kind of stands out in its category because it does launch higher than its competitors. It also sits in between some of the models, like, it doesn’t directly compete with a hollow cavity and it doesn’t compete with, like the Cobra King Tour. Like, it’s a degree stronger. For a forged iron, it performs great for us. The only problem is that it is a little bit light in a swing weight, so we have to be careful of who we fit.”
  • “It’s definitely one of our more popular irons for sure. You know, you get a guy who wants to play something small but still wants something more forgiving, and they don’t want kind of that full hollow body iron. I mean, that’s definitely one of our best sellers for sure. We’re seeing that a lot of combos — that’s a one iron that you can definitely combo with the ZX7 for sure.”
  • “I think a lot of guys like the concept of the V-Sole with them…If you’re talking an overall package, you know, for the guy that is looking for something clean. That’s a spectacular golf club. Good looks and good feel and great, you know, great performance, and it fits a lot of categories.”
  • “I think the one struggle a lot of companies have with that category is getting something to spin, so to try and give like guys so they don’t get those knuckleball shots or that fly out of the rough that goes 20 yards longer. I kind of think that that’s what I think makes that item so good is you get some spin on it, and I think it, it looks and feels good enough that like it, a guy that’s a mid-single digit can play it and be like, yeah, that’s good enough for me. But it’s also forgiving enough that a guy that’s in that kind of 12-to-15 kind of category if he wants to reach a little bit and play something that might look a little bit better. It just fits such a huge, huge range of players. I think it’s just awesome.”

wilson staff fg tour irons

Their story:  Billed as Ping’s “longest iron ever,” the G430 irons combine a lower CG with stronger, custom- engineered lofts and a thinner face that delivers up to two more mph of ball speed, per the company. At the heart of the new addition is the PurFlex cavity badge, an innovation that features seven flex zones that allow more free bending in design to increase ball speed across the face. In combination with a lower CG, the badge aims to contribute to a solid feel and pleasing impact sound.

  • “The best G.I. iron on the market. Easy to hit and launch while making great ball speed for distance.”
  • “The best iron in the game improvement category. High launch and packed with forgiveness on those off-center hits. It’s one of the easiest irons to hit. So easy to hit and look at for the average golfer.”
  • “Yeah, I mean, that’s definitely a go-to and in the matrix for sure. I mean, it’s just super easy to hit, super forgiving. They don’t mess that iron up.”
  • “Ping does a great job of building golf clubs. Their design is fantastic and it’s not for everybody, you know, it’s not the lowest-spinning club…but it sure is one of the most forgiving golf clubs and most consistent golf clubs. Ping G430 in that category of club, you can have something that a good player who needs a little help maybe can use because it’s consistent across the face, and you can’t do that with some of the other clubs because they’re not as consistent across the face for the ball speeds. It is a monster for us.”
  • “The best iron in the game improvement category. It’s one of the easiest irons to hit.”

Why Tony Finau is planning to play 2 drivers at the Masters

wilson staff fg tour irons

Editor’s note: This is an excerpt of a piece we originally filed this piece for PGATour.com’s Equipment Report. You can read the full piece there.

Now, for the 2024 Masters specifically, Finau is planning to put another Ping G430 LST driver into play, in order to help him on the right-to-left holes at Augusta. The second driver, which is set to replace his 3-wood, will measure about the length of his 3-wood, and it has 10.5 degrees of loft, according to Ping Tour rep Kenton Oates.

“Tony Finau, most likely, will be playing two G430 LST drivers this week; his gamer, and a new shorter 10.5 headed option,” Oates told GolfWRX.com on Wednesday. “In the ramp-up towards The Masters, Tony and his team discussed options to optimize his performance off the tee. In discussing the tee shots around Augusta and second shots, Tony realized he would never hit 3-wood off the ground, minus maybe 8 if it was soft and into the wind.

“With that in mind, we felt it would be worth exploring a driver built to more 3-wood specs – shorter, more loft, etc. We build the driver in Houston and Tony carried it to Augusta to test. Right away it was giving him the performance he was looking for, allowing him to hit a straighter shot off the tee, or even draw it easier than his gamer driver, along with the added forgiveness benefits of using a driver instead of a 3-wood. Tony potentially could use the little driver on 2-7-10-14-17-18, pending course and wind conditions.”

Since Finau’s stock driver swing is grooved for a cut shot, maybe it’s unrealistic that Finau will hit big sweeping draws with the new, second driver option. But, according to Finau, it’s still a useful option, especially since he won’t need the 3-wood much this week.

“The [second] driver really goes straight, so there’s just no fade on it,” Finau told GolfWRX.com. “The draw holes out here, you don’t really have to turn it over, you just can’t hit a fade. But yeah, I’m going with two drivers.”

A tangible improvement from Wilson in the better player iron category, blending feel and forgiveness with excellent distance control and appealing looks. There really is little to dislike.

These irons excel in every area of looks and performance the low handicapper is looking for

They might not go the distance you’d hope given the high lofts

Golf Monthly's Wilson Staff FG Tour V6 irons review, a new better player model said to offer feel and distance control to the better player

Wilson Staff’s new FG Tour V6 irons take the technology found in the V4 model and improve upon it to make them more user-friendly for the better player. It's no wonder Padraig Harrington won the Portugal Masters this year in his first event using them.

This is especially the case in the long irons, where not only is there an increase in the amount of tungsten used (20g up from 18g) but this tungsten has been split, with 12g positioned in the toe and 8g in the heel.

wilson_staff_fg_tour_v6_4_and_7_iron_weight_web

Not only does this make the 3, 4 and 5-irons more forgiving due to the extra perimeter weighting, it also reduces the draw bias these irons tend to have, making them easier to hit straighter on long approach shots.

Wilson Staff launch FG Tour V6 irons

The first thing that strikes you is how beautiful these irons look from every angle. They’re certainly not in your face, quite understated and classy, with a premium polished finish and subtle orange details.

The profile is clearly aimed at the competent ball striker – the minimal offset and thin topline along with the short blade length may be intimidating to the mid-handicapper, but if you can muster well-struck iron shots relatively consistently, you are rewarded in a multitude of ways.

wilson_staff_fg_tour_v6_7_iron_address_web

The first is through excellent distance control, assisted by the perimeter weighting that reduces the club inclination to twist on mishits. Our testing showed an incredibly tight front-to-back dispersion, which means it will be easier to predict how far the ball will travel – something that is imperative when going flag hunting.

The second is the superb feel these irons offer. It’s soft, like you would expect from a forged club, but also with a hint of power and explosiveness. You’d hope you get a bit of this given the lofts of these irons are very traditional indeed – in fact they’re some of the highest you’re likely to find on the market (the 7-iron is 35°). Yet, these irons aren’t short in length – they pack plenty of punch despite their elevated loft angles.

This shows simply that these irons are not geared to provide out and out distance. More so, they should appeal to those who want more consistent distances from their irons without sacrificing huge amounts of forgiveness.

Wilson Staff FG Tour- Tour Quality Irons Review

What we say...

These sensational irons have been used by Padraig Harrington as well as hot-shot American Ricky Barnes. In the words of Pro tester Chris: “Despite the cavity the head doesn’t seem any bigger. I’m seriously impressed.” Wilson say the club has been designed for Tour pros and better amateurs – and even our amateur guys were delighted. Dave really liked the look at address, saying head graphics made it look contemporary. In terms of dispersion, the forgiving nature of the cavity back design certainly helped Jon, as his ball dispersion stats with the FG Tour were right up there with his best in this category. There is progressive offset – more as the iron gets longer – ideal for those harder-to hit long irons. These are affordable, easy on the eye, with penetrating flight, forgiveness, “workability” and are a worthy winner.

Ratings (out of 5):

Distance : 4.5   Dispersion : 5   Looks : 4.5   Feel : 4.5   Forgiveness : 4.8   Versatility : 5

The new Wilson Staff FG Tour begins the next chapter in Wilson’s storied forged iron history. With visual cues reminiscent of forged classics like the FG51 and Gooseneck, the new FG Tour is designed for Tour professionals and better-playing amateurs, and is our first forging to feature a playable and forgiving cavity-back design.

FG Tour prototypes were play-tested for more than 18 months on the worldwide professional tours by Padraig Harrington, Ricky Barnes and leading amateurs. Refinements from this play-testing were critical in finalizing shape and weighting. Tour-Preferred Feel: Precision forged from a mild carbon steel, the Tour-proven design incorporates minimally progressive offests, a square toe blade shape and thin top line to fit the better player's eye. A Tour-configured sole design promotoes better turf interaction over a wide range of lies.

Mass Distribution: The shallow cavity redistributes weight from the heel into the toe, positioning the centre of gravity in the centre of the face and increasing MOI for stability and a more solid feel. The Wilson Staff FG Tour Irons not only won a Gold Award at this years Today's Golfer Irons test but they also were the 'Best on Test' (found in issue 270).

Review: Wilson Staff FG Tour V2 Irons

wilson staff fg tour irons

Maybe  you’ve seen the commercial from Wilson about their irons winning more championship than any other iron.  If you go back in history, you will find so many pros playing Wilson Staff irons.  When I was younger, Wilson staff irons were THE clubs to play.  Unfortunately over the years, Wilson irons experimented with some out of the box designs.  The fat shafts, the box sets, etc.  It really seemed like Wilson lost their way, until the last couple years.  The newer Wilson Staff FG line draws on the heritage of winners. The Wilson Staff FG Tour V2 irons are the second generation of this new line.  They are a slightly more forgiving cavity back version of the Staff FG irons.  Yet they still maintain a compact shape, sharp lines, and a solid forged feel.

wilson staff fg tour irons

The mid irons 7iron-5-iron were easy to hit too.  They had just a tiny bit of offset making it easy to elevate and strike the ball solid from just about any lie.  The leading edge is sharper on these than some irons, but still resisted digging because of the soft radius sole.  I mostly hit a straight ball, but you can work these slightly either direction.  I didn’t find a bias either way.

The long irons 4iron-3iron even found slots in my bag.  Typically I don’t hit a 3irons because I don’t strike it solid, I did have success with the Wilson Staff FG Tour V2 irons .  I had no problems getting it off the ground, and found good control with it.  The 4-iron was just money.  I find myself needing  a 200 yard shot numerous time during my rounds and the 4iron was perfect.

wilson staff fg tour irons

The feel of these irons is as good as any forged irons you can find.  The cavity back has some interesting cutouts and stepped weighting with a tab right behind the sweet spot of the head.  They feel so solid on well struck shots and offer just enough forgiveness for shots slightly off-center shots.  These irons are a great fit for low-mid handicappers.  Many of Wilson’s staff players have these in their bags.

I was also really happy to see these irons in a big box golf store.  Customers are finally able see Wilson staff in person, even swing them in the store and buy them on the spot.  While Wilson made Staff FG Tour irons for the last couple years, they were nowhere to be found in person.  Finally Wilson is getting their great staff products in consumers hands.  The Wilson Staff FG Tour V2 irons are born from the heritage of winners and I think you will find them to be winners in your bag too.

Wilson Staff FG Tour V4 Irons Review

More in irons:.

Tour Edge Hot Launch C524 E524 Irons

50 Words or Less

The Wilson Staff FG Tour V4 irons are some of the best irons on the market for the better player.  Great looks and feel combined with sneaky forgiveness in the long irons.

Introduction

Fans of Wilson Staff have waited a long time for a true successor to the beloved FG Tour V2 irons, and that successor is finally here in the FG Tour V4 .  As someone who happily gamed the V2 for multiple seasons, I’m definitely in that group.  From the time I first saw the FG Tour V4 irons at the Wilson Innovation Center, I was very excited about putting them to the test because they have the refined looks that players want with the performance benefits of a combo set.

Wilson Staff FG Tour V4 Irons_0291

The  Wilson Staff FG Tour V4 irons  deliver exactly the kind of look that you want from a players iron: thin top lines, thin soles, minimal offset , and a classic look in the cavity.

In comparing the V4 to the V2, the V4 is a more refined club.  They are nearly identical in terms of the width of the top line and the size of the blade, but the V4’s more rounded edges make it appear smaller.  Similarly, the sole of the V4 is more rounded than the V2, but it’s also noticeably thinner.  You can see side-by-side comparisons of the V2 and V4 (V2 is always on the left) in the slideshow at the bottom of the page.

Wilson Staff FG Tour V4 Irons_0353

Sound & Feel

The bar that the FG Tour V2 set in terms of feel is quite high, but the FG Tour V4 irons  surpass it, if only slightly.  Both are extremely soft at impact , especially if you play a tour-caliber ball.  They also deliver very precise feedback about how the ball was struck.  The V4 gets my vote by being a bit softer and simultaneously feeling a little more crisp.  This difference may be related to the V4’s excellent stock shaft, the DG Pro.

Wilson Staff FG Tour V4 Irons_0299

Performance

A quick glance at the  Wilson Staff FG Tour V4 irons  might lead you to believe that they’re just another players iron.  A closer look, however, reveals their secret weapon: tungsten weights in the soles of the 4-7 irons .  This seemingly small change allows this traditional looking set to perform like a combo set – the long irons launch a little higher and more easily while the scoring irons retain their penetrating ball flight .  This change was based on feedback from Wilson Staff’s PGA Tour players like Ricky Barnes who loved the V2 irons but wanted a higher ball flight from the long irons.  As I mentioned earlier, the V4 irons also have a great stock shaft – the DG Pro – which enhances the higher launch of the long irons while keeping the short irons from ballooning.

In my testing, I found that the V4 did launch 1-2 degrees higher than the V2 on pure strikes, and also on mishits.  I think that the improved flight on mishits is every bit as important because it keeps the thinned long iron from being a score killer.

Beyond that, the V4 irons perform as you would expect: they give you total control over the golf ball with just enough forgiveness to cover up those small mishits.  You’ll be able to flight the ball high or low and shape it easily in either direction.

Wilson Staff FG Tour V4 Irons_0301

If you want a little bit of forgiveness without making any compromises in terms of looks and feel, the  Wilson Staff FG Tour V4 irons  are for you.  They have the benefits of a combo set with the classic looks and great feel of the most traditional forged blades.

what handicap recommendations for these wilsons

' src=

I don’t think handicaps are the best way to pick clubs, but, broadly speaking, 15 or better at least.

' src=

Good piece… so for a guy who’s playing less forgiving older Wilson Staff forged irons and shoots 79 -89 … usually somewhere in the middle, which do you thing: these or the newer F5s? I hit these V4s last year and really liked them…

I haven’t hit the F5 much, but my understanding is that the F5 is more about forgiveness, the V4 has some forgiveness with a more traditional look. All depends on your priorities.

' src=

The DG Pro shaft that comes with the Wilson V4’s gets many great reviews. Can I have the shafts extended by an inch or 1 .5″ without affecting the performance of the club?

Adding 1.5″ without making any adjustments will raise the swing weight considerably and could make the shaft play softer. I would work with a good club builder/fitter to get all that dialed in.

Wilson Staff FG Tour M3 irons review

Golfmagic tests out the latest Wilson Staff iron

wilson staff fg tour irons

GOLFMAGIC was afforded the luxury of taking a first look at Wilson Staff's brand new FG Tour M3 range . First club placed in hand was the delightful FG Tour M3 iron , in black PVD finish.

The M3 iron is something a little different and certainly new for Wilson Staff. While we've come to see this sort of finish in an iron several times from other manufacturers, like the PING G25 for example, we've rarely seen it in a forged head like this 8620 carbon steel product.

While Wilson Staff claims the M3 iron is verging on a better player product, I personally believe an 18-capper would thrive on this club. Don't let the thin topline and compact look of this club make you think otherwise!

The FG Tour M3 iron is a direct replacement for the original FG Tour, yet the V2 will remain a current offering, which is pleasing considering just how much I enjoyed it earlier this year in our 10 of the Best: 2013 Player Irons Test .

This revamped model for 2014, however, is slightly larger (longer and taller with a wider sole) and more forgiving than the design it replaces. M3 also has a little more offset and a rounded shape with more sole radius and camber than the original FG Tour.

Looking down on the ball in blazing Surrey sunshine out at Wentworth Golf Club, the FG Tour M3 ticked all the right boxes for appearance. The attractive new dark, non-glare look eliminated reflection and really helped me focus on the shot in hand. A big improvement in the apperance stakes on the much-too-shiny-looking FG Tour V2.

Maybe it's just me, but I also thought the ball looked visually clearer against the black face and that inspired a little more confidence at address.

In terms of feel, the M3 felt particularly sweet. I received a nice muted sound at impact and decent feedback on off-centre hits. When I hit one out the centre, I had to look down to make sure I actually hit the ball. Pure, indeed.

M3 features a progressive cavity design that moves weight lower and further away from the centre of the face in the long irons, perfect for the low ball-flighted player like myself. I enjoyed higher launch with the longer sticks as well as an abundance of forgiveness that I simply couldn't argue with.

The short irons occupy a centre of gravity that is higher in the head and closer to the middle of the face to provide a more penetrating flight and workability, and once again, particularly forgiving. Distance control with the scoring clubs was perfect.

The Standard True Temper Dynamic Gold XP steel shaft felt solid, as always. Higher initial flight with a controlled ball flight perfect for when the wind picks up. The club can also be purchased in Aldila RIP Phenom 95 graphite.

Wilson Staff is well and truly living life in the fast lane right now, and the M3 once again represents a move in the right direction. Great ball flight, great looks and great feel.

FG Tour M3 irons gives you game improvement performance with better player looks, in my book. As I've mentioned before, I think this club will suit golfers from at least an 18-handicap all the way down to pro. These are forged babies for the player transitioning from a traditional game improvement design.

At £599 (4-PW, steel; £699 4-PW, graphite), the FG Tour M3 isn't cheap but I suppose it's about right in the current climate. I believe the M3 is worthy of serious consideration for golfers thinking of buying a new premium set of clubs for 2014. Wilson Staff are very much back in the spotlight.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.
