Winter Activities & Safaris

photo © Visit Finland

As beautiful as Finland is during the summer months, it is in winter that the country is truly enveloped in a magical charm. The forests of spruce, pine, and beech become laden with snow, lakes freeze over, everywhere a pristine white blanket covers the land, and the air is cold, fresh, and pure. Staying indoors and waiting for the thaw isn’t an option for the Finns, and so they find a multitude of ways of enjoying the winter.

Skiing , whether cross-country or downhil l, is always popular, and there are opportunities from the Baltic coast in the south right up the northernmost hills of Lapland to enjoy this sport. Snowboarding , tobogganing , and snowshoe trekking are also great ways of getting out and about in the snow, but for those who prefer to conserve their energies there are plenty of snowmobiles available to rent, or even the chance to take a reindeer or husky-pulled sleigh ride .

Of course, one of the main reasons people come to Finland in winter is to visit Santa in his village and meet the man himself. Other unique attractions include the incredibly beautiful Snow Castle in Kemi, taking a dip into the frozen waters of the Gulf of Bothnia from the reconverted ice-breaker Sampo , the village of Lainio which features a Snow Village that includes a SnowHotel with around 30 individually decorated suites, an IceBar, an Igloo Disco, and an abundance of ice sculptures. And the Northern Lights !

Polar Lights Tours – Horses, huskies and the magic of Lapland in Levi

A tale of three villages, skiing in finland – the perfect family destination for winter holidays, allas sea pool – sauna experiences & swimming in helsinki, ylläs – top travel destination for all 8 seasons, experience an authentic finnish winter in snowy paljakka, winter activities & safaris in finland, snowshoe treks.

Another recreation that is growing in popularity is snowshoe trekking. With snowshoes on you can explore a wide variety of terrain in the most ecological and environmentally friendly of manners. Snowshoes are very easy to use, no real experience is needed – just a few minutes of practise until you get used to them, and with warm clothing you’re ready to explore. The best way to get started is to use any of the numerous snowshoe trails that dot the country, usually in the company of a skilled guide. If you are considering a hike with a group of your own, then make sure you have a good map and that you plan your hike in advance.

Of course, one of the advantages of snowshoes is that you don’t need to keep to existing trails, you can explore areas of deep snow, and hilly terrain, no matter what the conditions are like. In the past snowshoes had the appearance of elongated tennis rackets, but modern snowshoes more closely resemble very small, broad skis, and are made with lightweight aluminium frames  with a decking of cold-resistant rubber or plastic. Finns get the most out this exercise by combining it with ski poles, which is called Nordic Snowshoeing. In all resorts you’ll be able to hire all the equipment necessary, and hire skilled guides if you choose to.

Ice Fishing

By far the most popular form of fishing in Finland, ice-fishing falls within the remit of public rights of access, which means that is free for everyone and no licence is required. Virtually every Finn has spent some time ice-fishing, usually fishing for their national fish, the perch. Perhaps its popularity is based on the serenity and peace that comes with the contemplation of a small hole in the ice, coupled with its simplicity. Ice-fishing requires little in the way of equipment; warm clothing is a must, of course, an ice auger (a special drill for boring the hole), a stool to sit on, a small rod, and a jigging lure with bait. The clothing you wear is crucial for your enjoyment of ice-fishing: heavy socks and insulated boots, overalls specifically designed to keep your body heat contained, proper headgear, and a good pair of gloves. The auger is also important, usually a 4-6 inch auger, although a larger one is needed if fishing for pike. The ice will be much thicker in Lapland, so an extension to the auger may be needed, and if you’re ice-fishing a long way from human habitation its a good idea to bring a spare.

Reindeer Sleigh Rides & Safari

For most people in the west, reindeer mean just one thing: Santa Claus and his team as led by Rudolph, but for the indigenous Lapps, or Sámi, the reindeer is an essential part of their lives and culture. Reindeer have provided the people of Lapland with food, clothing, home furnishings, and transport for generations. Today, the reindeer are not so essential when it comes to transport, but reindeer sleigh rides continue to grow in popularity with tourists, providing the visitor with an opportunity to enjoy and appreciate a part of Lappish culture.

Throughout Lapland there are many reindeer safaris and excursions to be enjoyed, and the visitor can choose from a range of options that best suit them, from short rides to longer excursions. Most excursions will include a visit to a local reindeer farm where you can learn more about the animals and gain an insight into the unique and ancient lifestyle of the people who continue to depend on them for their livliehood. Visitors can choose to control the sleigh themselves, or to sit back and relax and allow an experienced driver to take control. During the course of a reindeer sleigh ride you will have the opportunity to savour the ‘sooty pot’ coffee so popular with the Lapps, or enjoy a typical Lapp lunch in one of their tepees.

Northern Lights

One of the great attractions of Finland is the chance to experience the Northern Lights, or Aurora Borealis, and every year thousands of visitors come here to see them. Although the best place to see them is the Kilpisjärvi region, in Lapland, the Aurora Borealis can also be seen as far south as Helsinki. In fact there are about 20 days in a year when the lights can be seen in Southern Finland, the main problem being the high levels of light pollution and the difficulty in finding dimly lit areas. As one would expect, this is not an issue in Lapland, where the lack of city lights ensures that there are some 200 nightly occurences every year.

The best times of the year for viewing this incredible spectacle are obviously during the dark winter months, and other peak seasons are September through October, and February through March. In the Kilpisjärvi region, on clear nights during the dark period of the year, the auroras can be seen 3 nights out of every 4 on average. Further north, at Utsjoki for example, there is a decrease of 10%, and likewise as you travel further south the incidence also decreases. In the Sodankylä region you can see the auroras every second night on average, and in the Oulu-Kuusamo region every fourth night.

The best time of the night to see the Northern Lights is usually between 9pm and 11.30pm when they peak. This is due to the magnetic midnight and the fact that the disturbances in the Earth’s magnetic field are at a maximum at this time. After midnight the incidence of the lights begins to diminish, and by 4am to 5am the probablity of occurrence falls below 50%.

So what are these ghostly lights in the sky? Finns refer to them as ‘revontulet’ which means foxes fire, and refers to a Sami, or Lapp, legend that the aurora was caused by a fox running along the snow-covered fells striking its tail on the snowdrifts and sending trails of sparks into the sky. Other northern peoples believed the aurora came from the blood of the dead, blood that ran when the spirits played ball or rode horses in the afterlife. Yet another legend would have it that the auroras are really Thor throwing thunderbolts at Väinämöinen, the hero of the great Finnish epic, The Kalevala. In fact, from Siberia to Scotland and across the great plains of America, every culture that has experienced these wondrous lights has developed their own mythology to describe it, and there are nearly as many myths surrounding the Aurora Borealis as there are for the Sun and the Moon.

Science has provided us with an explanation no less beautiful. The Northern Lights are largely caused by solar flares, which create the solar storms and solar winds that buffet our planet. As electrons are blown by the solar winds they collide with molecules in the ionosphere, creating electromagnetic radiation whose spectrum ranges from infrared to ultraviolet. The visible spectrum is mostly white and green light produced by oxygen molecules in a state of excitement, and pink light which is emitted from nitrogen.

Ice Skating

Ice skating is a hugely popular pastime in Finland, and so it should be: a study published by the University of Oxford suggests that the earliest ice-skating happened in Southern Finland some 4,000 years ago! Today, you can skate just about anywhere in Finland, on lakes or across frozen rivers, you can even skate across the Gulf of Bothnia to Sweden should you feel so inclined. And of course, there are skating opportunities available in every town and city, with countless indoor and outdoor rinks to choose from.

In Kuopio every winter the finest skaters in the world gather for the annual Finland Ice Marathon, which has been held every year since 1984. Alongside the professional skaters, thousands of recreational skaters take part, and there is also a varied programme of entertainment on Lake Kallavesi for the large audience it attracts. Although it usually perfectly safe to skate alone, you can get the most out of your skating experience by going on a guided skating trip. Skating equipment is available for rent almost everywhere. The season usually runs from November through April, depending on weather conditions, but the best time is from January through March.

Ice-breaker Cruise

Operating from off the coast of the Lapland city of Kemi in the Gulf of Bothnia, the Sampo once served as an icebreaker in Arctic waters for 30 years. Today this impressive vessel acts as a cruise ship for hardy ice adventurers. From the middle of December until the end of April visitors can sail on the Sampo in the frozen waters of the Arctic and experience the frozen Arctic landscape, the winter darkness, the crackling frost and the clear starry skies, often lit by the shimmering light of the Aurora Borealis. Excursions begin with a trip out to the Sampo on a snowmobile across the frozen sea, and includes the chance to swim in a waterproof thermal suit among in the sea among the broken lumps of ice.

Snowmobiles

In the snowy wilderness of Lapland, snowmobiles are a way of life for the people living there, merely a means of getting from A to B, but for the visitor to this winter wonderland there can hardly be a more exciting way of exploring the beauty of these natural wild lands. Across the wide open expanses of of Lapland and Northern Finland there is a carefully managed network of intersecting trails, through forests and across frozen lakes and rivers, where you can cover up to 100km per day. Snowmobiles are very easy to operate, but even if you are a nervous novice you’ll find highly skilled guides who will teach you all you need to know to manage these fun machines safely. Throughout the north there are numerous different safaris to avail of, and you can choose one that best suits your level of experience, from short trips for the beginner, to longer expeditions for those who have plenty of experience. In every case, the safari organiser will provide the best of equipment and clothing to ensure your wellbeing and safety, leaving you to simply enjoy the sights and excitement as you explore the untouched wilderness around you.

Winter Wonderland

Lapland in winter means snowfall, temperatures well below zero and the Northern Lights against dark skies. Christmas is more than just one day, as Lapland is the home of Santa Claus.

For many, Finland is synonymous with winter. And for good reason! Snow covers the north for about half the year, deep and white, and auroras light up the night skies just about every other frosty night. And who could forget Christmas and that jolly old elf, Santa Claus?

Lose yourself among the snow-crowned trees in the winter wilderness of Virtual Lapland .

Let it snow!

Usually the first intrepid snowflakes of the season drift gently atop Finland’s highest mountains sometime in autumn . As the days grows shorter and colder, snow begins its slow blanketing of the Arctic, from north to south. Some years, there’s more snow, some years less. But according to the Finnish Meteorological Institute, Finnish Lapland has a better than 90% chance of a White Christmas every year. Temperatures vary quite a bit depending on location and time of year. Christmas in Rovaniemi might be -20°C to +5°C. But the farther north you go, the more likely you’ll encounter negative temperatures as low as -30°C in the coldest parts of winter.

Once the snow and weather spiral together like a frosty waltz, Lapland is set for the winter. 200 days of snow per year is the norm, with peak snowcover usually in late January and February. According to the Finnish Meteorological Institute, in northern Lapland, this translates to 50 – 75 cm of snow. Around the Arctic Circle, you can expect 25 – 50 cm of snow on the ground. But a special mention has to be given to Posio and Syöte, just below the Arctic Circle. These areas receive the most snowfall in Finland, the perfect location for an unforgettable ski vacation, snowmobile ride or epic snowball fight!

Speaking of playing in the snow , there’s no other Arctic destination on Earth with the snow opportunities that Lapland offers. Go cross-country skiing through giant old-growth forests, just like the proto-Finns. Or speed down the slopes of Finland’s largest ski resort. Grab your board and head to the backslopes. Strap on your snowshoes and hike the Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park. Don’t forget to stop by a wilderness cabin to light a fire and enjoy a packed lunch!

If you prefer crystal clear ice to hard-packed snow, then try your hand … or perhaps your foot … at ice-skating. Because the rivers and lakes are so often covered in snow, there are ice-skating rinks across Lapland.

Another popular way to, ahem, break the ice is to go ice swimming. But unlike the crazy old men who swim the chilly English Channel, ice swimming in Lapland is a smaller, more intimate affair. First you put on a knitted cap, and then you slowly dip yourself into a pool carved from the frozen river or lake. Have fun with it. See how many new expletives you discover when your whole body is covered with +4°C water.

Skier surprised by reindeer friend on Lapland fell

Fire in the Sky

The ancient Sámi—one of Europe’s indigenous peoples—believed that the stunning dance of the auroras in the sparkling sky meant that the souls of the dead were on the move. The Sámi would cease their business and stand perfectly still, so as not to attract their attention. These days, it’s the other way around. As soon as the Northern Lights begin their telltale flicker, there’s a flurry of motion and exclamations.

According to people with big brains and white lab coats, the Northern Lights happen when solar dust travels through our atmosphere, exciting air molecules. On the ground, we most often see them as sheets, lines or whorls of green fire, though sometimes they’re purple or even red. The auroras happen almost every other night on average, though the Midnight Sun makes them impossible to see in the summer. But in the heart of winter, when there’s only a few hours of Polar Night at midday, the Northern Lights really come out to play.

You can see the Northern Lights just about anywhere except downtown or in an area with many streetlights. (And sometimes even here!) The easiest way to ensure the best possibilities is with a Northern Lights safari. You’ll bundle up in a warm outfit that makes you feel just a little like a toddler and head away from all lights. In northernmost Finland, you might head to the frozen Teno (Tana) River to see the auroras above real tundra landscapes. In southern Lapland, snow-capped pine trees wait just as expectantly as you for the silent spectacle overhead.

Pics or it didn’t happen

Just like a big fish story, proof is mandatory. That’s why Lapland has some of the best Northern Lights photographers in the world. You can take advantage of their experience and expertise in various ways. Attend the Northern Lights photography workshop and get hands-on training. Travel with seasoned pros excursions to the aforementioned mountains of northwestern Finland. Just about every Northern Lights safari has a guide who knows how to help you capture the moment forever.

Northern Lights over snow crowned trees in Finnish Lapland in winter

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas

With so much snow and the magic of the Northern Lights, it’s not hard to see why Lapland is a winter wonderland. That’s why Santa Claus set up shop under the twin peaks of Korvatunturi and holds office in Santa Claus Village every day of the year.

There’s another very important reason that Santa Claus operates from Finnish Lapland. There are more reindeer here than people! With over 200,000 reindeer roaming the fells, forests and fields of Lapland, the Big Guy has his choice of the fastest, smartest animals. And you can encounter reindeer yourself by visiting a reindeer farm or taking a sledge ride through a whispering white forest.

Santa Claus and his reindeer are an important part of Christmas traditions and celebrations that happen all over Lapland. The biggest and most popular are at Santa Claus Village in Rovaniemi, where you can give Santa your season’s greetings in person. Santa Claus himself personally marks the start of the season with a celebration in his Village. Experience an exotic nature adventure with huskies and reindeer

Have you always dreamed of gliding through the winter wilderness, driving a husky sled? Or experiencing what it’s like to sit in a reindeer-pulled sleigh, in true Lapland style? Animal safaris offer a truly unique way to get close to the nature of Lapland. On a husky sled, you’ll feel how the sled glides silently but swiftly through the enchanting landscapes, adorned with pastel hues and snow-covered trees. Reindeer sleigh rides, on the other hand, allow you to explore the traditional Lappish mode of transportation in a more peaceful manner.

During the winter season, animal safaris are popular day activities in Ylläs, and it’s advisable to make reservations in advance to ensure you don’t miss out on this unique experience.

winter safari finland

Huskies make an impression with their enthusiasm

On a husky safari, you get to meet the adorable huskies and experience the thrill of speed. After the initial wild and loud burst of energy, it quickly turns into a silent glide through the enchanting Lapland wilderness, where deep peace and quiet prevail without any other people or disturbances.

How to act on a husky safari

Sled dogs are often Alaskan Huskies, which aren’t a specific breed but a general term for mixed-breed sled dogs that can withstand cold temperatures and enjoy running. In a dog sled team, one person stands on the sled runners, and another person sits in the sled. Positions can be switched during breaks or even during the journey. There’s usually heaps of time for taking photographs.

The number of dogs chosen to pull the sled is based on their ability to comfortably pull two people. It’s essential to listen carefully to the instructions and remember to brake when instructed. The best part of a husky safari is standing on the sled runners and letting the dogs do what they love most – running.

In the Ylläs region, there are various lengths of husky safaris available, from short runs to full-day trips and even week-long expeditions. Remember to give the dogs some extra love and attention as a thank-you after your shared adventure.

A semi-wild reindeer is a traditional transportation in Lapland

Reindeer safaris offer an experiential way to explore Lapland’s nature and reindeer herding culture. They are suitable for travelers of all ages and skill levels and are especially popular among families.

Reindeer rides are a slower-paced experience compared to dog sledding. Snuggled under warm blankets in the sleigh, there’s time to immerse yourself in the quiet winter forest through which the reindeer gently walk. Reindeer are still partly wild animals, which means they aren’t as easy to handle as fully domesticated animals like horses.

During the summer months, reindeer roam freely in the forests, so they don’t become as accustomed to humans as animals kept in enclosures. Therefore, reindeer safaris always include a knowledgeable guide to lead or drive the sleigh. Reindeer also don’t particularly enjoy being petted, even though you might be tempted to give them a pat.

winter safari finland

Visit a reindeer farm

A visit to a reindeer farm is worth experiencing, as it allows you to learn more about the history of reindeer herding and the life that both humans and reindeer lead in Lapland today. Feeding the reindeer is also part of the program during the visit.

If you dare, you can test your manhood or womanhood by taking a dip in the icy water. During the day we learn about the Sámi people, the King Crab, salmon and the mighty ocean itself. Lunch will be outside by the fire on in a restaurant depending on the weather conditions. In the afternoon we return to our accommodation. Ethical Reindeer Safari in Lapland – The Do’s & Don’ts

A Reindeer Safari in Lapland is one of the most popular winter activities in this part of the world. But there are some things to be aware of should you choose to take part in this experience.

When planning a trip to  Lapland in winter , a reindeer safari should be at the top of your bucket list. Dashing through the snow in an open sleigh is a childhood dream come true.

Unlike Lapland’s husky safaris , the reindeer move at an almost tranquilising pace, allowing you to sit back and fully enjoy your ride through the majestic wintry wilderness.

The aim of this blog is to help you book your own reindeer safari in Lapland while addressing any ethical concerns related to this activity.

So let’s get to it. Here is everything you need to know about booking a Reindeer Safari in Lapland.

History of Reindeer in Lapland

Reindeer Safari in Finland

Just one mention of reindeer conjures up childhood tales of flying sleighs and Santa Clause. However, in Lapland, reindeer play an integral role in Sámi culture .

Before cars and snowmobiles, reindeer sleighs were a means of transport across the region. Reindeer sleighs would help transport people or local produce between villages.

While today, reindeer sleigh tours are more of a tourism initiative than a necessity, reindeer herding and farming remain a major income source for many in the region.

Ethical Reindeer Safari in Lapland

Winter Reindeer Safari lapland

Which leads me on to my next point and the all-important question…  Is the Reindeer Safari in Lapland ethical ?

We had our doubts about the reindeer sleigh tours in Lapland, as we would with any animal tourism. There is a fine line between what is considered ethical and what isn’t.

We vowed to do our research before taking part and discovered that it’s less about the activity and more about how well the animals are looked after.

Encouragingly, unlike  riding an elephant , who would have endured years of mistreatment to allow you to ride them, it is in a reindeers genetics to be a powerful working animal.

But that doesn’t mean some tour companies won’t exploit them for financial gain. This is why it’s important to research ethical reindeer safaris in Lapland before taking part.

How to Choose an Ethical Reindeer Safari

feeding reindeers lapland

Animal tourism will never be perfect. But ethical reindeer safaris, with ethical farms, show that it is possible to combine a thriving tourism economy while still respecting the animal.

With strict animal rights laws in place, I think you would struggle to find a reindeer farm in Lapland that isn’t ethical. But it doesn’t harm to do a few checks.

The best way to do this is to contact the company directly and ask them about their general safety and reindeer-care standards.

Or if you want 100% reassurance that your experience with reindeer is ethical, you could choose to visit only the reindeer farm – not go on a safari.

Reindeer Safari in Lapland FAQs

aurora lapland

This section aims to provide any info I think you might need to help with booking your reindeer experience in Lapland.

How Long is a typical Reindeer Safari?

Most reindeer safaris in Lapland offer varying lengths of safari with the longest being all day.

A half-day tour is an ideal amount of time. This way, you get plenty of time riding the sleigh, but it also includes lunch and a visit to the reindeer farm.

We also had the privilege of going on a night time safari on the hunt for the northern lights. Riding beneath the light of the full moon was a majestic experience.

Just keep in mind when booking your reindeer safari in Lapland, that any length of time stated may include transportation, breaks and time for debriefing.

For example, a 2-hour tour may only equate to 1 hour on the sleigh. You can check this with the company when you book.

How Much Does a Reindeer Safari Cost?

Prices for a Reindeer Safari in Lapland will vary throughout the region; however, here is a guideline based on our experience:

  • 1-3 hours: €120-170 per person
  • 3-6 hours: €170-300 per person
  • 6-8 hours: €300-400€ per person

Our Reindeer Safari Experience in Lapland

Reindeer Safari in Lapland, Finland

It was the night of the full moon, and naturally, we were excited for a magical evening in the Lapland wilderness. But first, we had to get dressed in the appropriate gear.

Most companies will provide winter gear for you to wear, such as overalls, boots, and a ski mask. But it pays to have some warm items of your own.

Dressed and ready to go, it was time for a short safety debriefing, before meeting the reindeer who would be pulling our sleigh.

Upon instruction, we gently got into our sleigh, and a herder tucked us in beneath a pile of warm blankets. e Lappish wilderness.

northern lights lapland

The reindeer moved at tranquil pace, allowing us to cosy up beneath the blanket and fully enjoy the experience.

With the light of the full moon guiding the way, we could see for what seemed like miles across the glorious winter landscapes. It was such a romantic and idyllic experience.

What to Know Before Your Husky Safari in Finland

This is a real-life touring experience that is found in the northern parts of Finland, and we’ve rounded up our list of what to know before your husky safari in Finland.

winter safari finland

Within moments of arrival, you’ll hear the excitement of the dogs, each one barking wildly with excitement, eagerly waiting to race through Finland’s rugged, snow-covered forests. Once they break free and hit the trails with a sled in tow, you get an overwhelming sense that these magnificent animals are in the zone; on a mission. Each dog is following the leader and determined to keep up with the pack while racing across the snow. For the record, we’re not describing a scene from popular movies like Eight Below , Balto , or even Frozen . This is a real-life touring experience found in the northern parts of Finland , and we’ve rounded up our list of what to know before your husky safari in Finland.

A group of dogs and a sled in Finland.

What is a husky safari?

Finland is known for its raw and natural beauty, where forests are blanketed in snow, creating the ultimate winter wonderland. Rovaniemi is the gateway to Finnish Lapland , and is known as a hub for husky safari adventures run by local families and mostly small, independent tour companies. A husky safari is one of the many exhilarating experiences available here, and a magical way to enjoy the region.

Varying in length and distance, some safari experiences will be as short as one hour, and others will last up to a full day, depending on the tour operator and the background. Most tours you will enjoy a sledding experience as a passenger, and some trips you might even have the chance to steer the sled.

How to choose a husky safari in Finland

All of the usual suspects come into play when selecting a tour: price, reviews, availability, and what’s included in the experience. Spend time before you book completing your research, ask around to see if any friends or family have enjoyed a similar experience, and read as much as you can to ensure the experience you pay for is the experience that you dreamed of.

Make sure you carefully weigh up your options and remember the lowest price isn’t always the best option.

What to wear on a husky safari in Finland

Some tour operators will allow you to rent gear, and others will expect you to have your equipment and this will vary between each tour. As always, it’s best to be prepared with as much of your gear as possible, as frostbite can occur in temperatures as high as -2 degrees celsius, so you’ll want to be ready to go with as many thermal layers as possible, along with waterproof gear to keep you safe and warm.

If you have snow boots, it’s recommended you wear them, or a similar pair of waterproof shoes to keep your feet warm. Another hot tip: ski goggles aren’t necessary, but they’ll help to stop snow flicking into your eyes during your sled experience.

Person in Finland

How do I find an ethical husky safari in Finland?

With a little research, you can triple check to ensure your tour operator is treating their animals well, and that your tour is totally legitimate. Similar to the above suggestion to reading reviews, make sure you have a clear image of whether the operator is a family-run business (or just a money-grabbing tourist scheme), and if the animals are treated right or if they’re housed in suitable conditions.

As for the history of using dogs to pull a sled, the origins of using dog power dates back hundreds of years. As early as the 10th-century, dogs were utilised to help people traverse vast distances across challenging terrain to hunt for food – as snowmobiles didn’t exist, making use of dog power and sledding was a form of survival. Today, it has emerged as a continued tradition in the region and is an authentic experience for travellers to enjoy along with long-distance races like the Iditarod hosted across the world.

Husky sled in the forests of Finland

What happens on a husky safari in Finland

As a generalisation, most husky experiences will include transfers to and from your hotel to the starting point. Then, when you arrive, you’ll be briefed by a team of experts about how to travel safely, learn everything you need to know about the huskies, and most importantly; the team will triple check to make sure you’re wearing the correct weather-appropriate gear to ride in the sled.

Depending on the group size, then you’ll be assigned a sled and meet your team of dogs before getting settled into the sled. If you’re wondering what the participation levels are or how much experience you need, all that is required is for you to sit back as you glide across the snow – all while being wrapped in a warm blanket. The dogs know what they’re doing; so you need to trust them. The lead dog is the smartest, and also the most powerful, but each dog has its ranking, and most sleds will have between 6-10 dogs. Some sleds will even have two lead dogs at the helm.

See Also: The Best Things to do in Finland in the Summer

Once the dogs are all harnessed in and ready to go, they’ll race out the gate before settling into a comfortable speed at about 10 km/h. During the exhilarating adventure, you can expect a few stops along the way to give the dogs a rest, but also to allow for photo opportunities and further explanation from your local guide about the history of the area. Conditions will vary, as it may be icy, or you might enjoy some light snowfall during your experience.

Once the ride comes to an end, most tours end with a traditional meal and another chance to learn more about the training, the origins of the animals, and why this experience is still so relevant today.
