Lil Uzi Vert celebrated his newly anointed Number One album in the country Monday by dropping his new video for “XO Tour Llif3,” the breakout hit off the Philadelphia rapper’s chart-topping Luv Is Rage 2 .

Directed by fashion designer and Kanye West collaborator Virgil Abloh, “XO Tour Llif3” is a voyeuristic journey through Lil Uzi Vert’s psyche, with the gruesome images – zombies, copious blood – paralleling the rapper’s grim lyrics. “All my friends are dead / Push me to the edge,” he repeats in the chorus.

The “official” “XO Tour Llif3” video arrives six months after the animated clip for the song accumulated over 288 million views on YouTube. The track previously peaked at Number Seven on the Hot 100 – Lil Uzi Vert previously topped the Hot 100 as a guest on Migos’ “Bad and Boujee” – while Luv Is Rage 2 debuted at Number One on the Billboard 200.

Songfacts®:

  • Here, Vert grapples with suicidal thoughts, relationship issues and betrayal. He recalls during the hook a conversation he had with his longtime girlfriend Brittany Byrd, at a time when it was rumored she was cheating on him. Byrd threatened to kill herself if the rapper ended their relationship. I don't really care if you cry On the real you should've never lied Should've saw the way she looked me in my eyes She said 'Baby, I am not afraid to die.'
  • The song title comes from The Weeknd's Starboy: Legend of the Fall 2017 world tour, where Lil Uzi Vert was the opening act.
  • The bassy and upbeat beat was supplied by TM88, who is one of the leading members of the Atlanta-based record production and songwriting team 808 Mafia. TM88's other production credits include Rich Gang's " Tapout " and 2 Chainz's " Gotta Lotta ."
  • The song gained a significant amount of heat thanks to the viral #LilUziVertChallenge. The genesis of these videos was a NYFW event, during which the Philly rapper demonstrated some of his funky moves, including his signature shoulder shimmy. After fans caught wind of the footage they began showing off their best Uzi half-shimmy dance impressions soundtracked by this tune.
  • Instead of using a traditional studio setup, TM88 mixed and mastered the track by listening to it through an Apple Beats Pill speaker.
  • The song's vibe came from a slower beat TM88 had made with his producer JW Lucas, which he'd been sitting on for three years. It served as the foundation for number six of a pack of 20 beats that TM88 then sent to Uzi Vert. "The beat ended up not traveling nowhere," he told Genius . "It was one of them ones where I didn't send it out, and I'm pretty sure he was sending it out, but it didn't reach. But, I was sitting there and I was like 'Man, let me sample myself.' I heard the beat and I was like, 'Damn. It's slow as s--t. It's like R&B. Man, f--k!' The slower beats don't go to the clubs. I know Uzi wanna go to the clubs. So I was like, 'Let me make a pack of uptempo 148 to 155.'"
  • This won for Song of the Summer at the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards. AT the ceremony, Lil Uzi Vert joined Ed Sheeran to perform this song and Sheeran's " Shape Of You ."
  • Directed by fashion designer Virgil Abloh, the song's music video features grim images like Lil Uzi Vert spitting blood, zombie girls, and a dead woman in a bathtub filled with her own blood. There are also appearances by the Weeknd and NAV. (Uzi was on tour with The Weeknd at the time of the song's first appearance on SoundCloud.) The final part of the clip matches the song's fatal lyrics.
  • The Genius community voted this their Best Song of 2017. They said: "Don't let the airy TM88-produced instrumental distract you from the song's themes of drug addiction, mental health, and failed relationships. Uzi's morbid hook was one of 2017's biggest earworms, setting up the ironic juxtaposition of crowds gleefully belting out the lyrics 'Push me to the edge. All my friends are dead.'"
  • Lil Uzi Vert recorded a sequel for this song in 2020 titled " P2 " Both tunes are the outro tracks of their respective albums.

How Lil Uzi Vert's "XO Tour Llif3" Ushered Emo Rap Into The Mainstream

lil uzi xo tour llif3

Many fans have this song to thank for a wider appreciation of emo rap.

It goes without saying that Lil Uzi Vert shook up the Hip Hop landscape when they dropped “XO Tour Llif3” in 2017. Since the rapper broke into the scene with Luv is Rage , they have continued to push boundaries and defy genre norms in music. Consequently, their unique fusion of trap beats, punk aesthetics, and emotionally charged lyrics have catapulted them into the limelight. Despite their deserved success now, we could never forget how, with “XO TOUR Llif3,” Lil Uzi introduced a new sound to the big stage . The Diamond-certified single turned seven on February 27, 2024, and yet, its impact continues to be felt. Here’s how Lil Uzi Vert used the groundbreaking track to usher emo rap into the mainstream.

The Emergence Of Emo Rap

Emo rap is a subgenre of Hip Hop that was popularized in the mid-2010s, characterized by its emotional and introspective lyrics. It often touches on themes like depression, heartbreak, and personal struggles, motifs Lil Uzi effortlessly conveys in their music. When artists like Lil Peep , XXXTentacion, and Juice WRLD began to explore similar themes within their music, it resonated with millions of listeners. Likewise, Lil Uzi Vert is another exemplary artist from that era, and “XO Tour Llife” put their name on the map forever.

Due to the emotional content in many of their hits , Lil Uzi Vert is often associated with this genre. When they debuted, their music was noticeably peculiar, blurring the lines between rap, rock, and punk. Undeniably, Uzi's music defied easy categorization. Before long, the rapper’s distinct style and eclectic sound became a symbol of the evolving genre. The energetic delivery in their music, coupled with introspective and often melancholic lyrics, appealed to a wide audience. These audiences were hungry for a new, emotionally charged musical experience, and Uzi was there to supply it to them.

The Breakout Moment: "XO Tour Llif3"

On March 24, 2017, Lil Uzi released “XO Tour Llife” as the lead single from their debut album Luv is Rage 2 . Surprisingly, it soon became a sleeper hit, peaking at number seven on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Presumably recorded during The Weeknd 's European leg of Starboy: Legend Of The Fall , “XO Tour Llife” is the breakout track that pushed both Lil Uzi Vert and emo rap onto the main stage of the music industry. The song’s haunting melody, paired with Lil Uzi’s raw and vulnerable lyrics, struck a chord with listeners grappling with the same or similar issues.

By the end of 2017, it had impressively garnered over one billion audio and video streams across major platforms. Evidently, the song had found its audience, and they were loving it. “XO Tour Llif3” contains themes of betrayal, heartbreak, drug use, and emotional turmoil which are vividly painted in the lyrics. Despite these themes that are typically perceived as dark, listeners were hooked. The song’s chorus, with its memorable refrain, became an anthem and resonated beyond traditional Hip Hop circles.

Lil Uzi Vert Makes History With “XO Tour Llif3”

"XO TOUR Llif3" not only dominated the charts but also paved the way for other emo rap artists. After its release, the song was quickly dubbed an emo rap anthem and helped push the subgenre forward. Interestingly enough, on the same day that Lil Uzi Vert released his debut album, Luv Is Rage 2 , fellow emo rap pioneer, XXXTENTACION, also dropped his debut album, 17 , which was not only a commercial success but became a seminal body of work within the subgenre.

Without a doubt, Lil Uzi Vert's "XO TOUR Llif3" significantly contributed to catalyzing the mainstream acceptance of emo rap. The song broke down barriers and showcased the power of blending emotional depth with rhythmic beats. As an artist unafraid to push boundaries, Lil Uzi Vert's impact on the genre continues to reverberate. With “XO Tour Llife,” they certainly left a mark on the ever-changing landscape of contemporary Hip Hop.

Lil Uzi Vert Shared His Trippy ‘XO Tour Llif3’ Video Featuring The Weeknd And Nav

Corbin Reiff

You can easily make the claim that the last two weeks have been maybe the run of Lil Uzi Vert’s entire career. First, the Philly rapper swung through and finally delivered his highly anticipated debut studio album Luv Is Rage 2 . He got to hang out with his rock idol Marilyn Manson the other day, and posted a photo up to the ‘Gram. Then he showed up to the MTV VMAs and collected a moon man statue for Song Of The Summer for his breakout hit “XO Tour Llif3.” Now today, he’s decided to cap all of that off by dropping the music video for that same hit.

As you might expect, the new video is trippy as hell, filled out by a series of overcast, purple-hued clouds, what looks like a possessed woman in bathtub, and for some reason, Arabic subtitles. Midway through, The Weekend shows up, along with Nav to lip sync over some of Uzi’ lines. The shots of him walking around wearing blank eye contacts and streaking blood across the walls are especially disconcerting.

It really seems like Uzi is embracing his goth/emo side to the max these days. Maybe that’ll feed into his next project, which, as he told Zane Lowe recently , might just be a freestyle rock album. “I’ma come out with a rock band,” he told said. “I don’t write, I just go in there,” he said. “It’s kinda hard for it to be bad. “I don’t even be looking at my songs like they’re good or bad. Remember, they’re my children. So when I put ’em out, someone accepts them.”

“XO Tour Llif3” by Lil Uzi Vert

by SMF · Published March 10, 2020 · Updated March 10, 2020

We can say that “XO Tour Llif3” features three major themes. First and foremost, as detailed by the chorus, is a troubled romance Lil Uzi Vert had with his significant other at the time, a lady by the name of Brittany Byrd.  This is someone whom he dated for a couple of years  beginning in 2014 . And whereas it is clear he truly loves her and vice versa, it is also quite evident that they had some very-serious issues. And the way the terse storyline detailed in the chorus reads, she deceived him in a way that really hurt his feelings.

It should be noted that Lil Uzi himself had confirmed that said deception  was not based on her cheating . But either way, as a result of being hurt so, he likewise caused her significant emotional pain. And honestly, the way the lyrics read is as if she is actually threatening to take her own life as a result. So the popular hypothesis is that Uzi was on the verge of dumping her. And in response she let him know that if he actually did so, she would commit suicide.

Lil Uzi Vert cheated on Brittany

The above is not to imply that Lil Uzi was the good guy in the relationship. In fact at the beginning of the first verse a brief story is told where “Brittany got mad” and almost dumped him. And apparently this was due to Uzi Vert being sensually intimate with some random chick.

Song’s Chorus

Now also in the chorus, the rapper states that ‘all his friends are dead’. This statement actually lends to the other two themes of this track, which are Uzi’s wealth and his depression. You see this term is meant to be more metaphorical than literal. For instance, it has been put forth that said “dead friends” is actually a reference to  dead presidents . Such is a popular colloquial term for dollars, which tend to feature the images of deceased American presidents on the monetary notes. Or looked at through a different lens, money has taken on the role of friends in Uzi Vert’s life. And indeed throughout the song he makes numerous references to his wealth, perhaps even more so than the aforementioned relationship with Brittany.

Uzi Vert is Depressed

And as for the final theme, that would be his depression. So going back to the statement that all his friends are dead, it is literal in the sense that many of homeys have in fact been fatal victims of street violence. But it is also his way of saying that he is not looking for any new homeys neither. Rather, as stated earlier, he is cool with his wealth serving the role of a faithful companion.

But said wealth does not mean he doesn’t suffer from his fair share of mental issues. Indeed at the end of the first verse he admits to being a user of a very dangerous drug which many abusers utilize as a form of stress relief. And that is the same manner in which the rapper is using it, to “help the pain” and “make it go away”. However, he also contends that he is not an addict.  Instead it just serves the purpose of helping to alleviate his depression.

In Conclusion

So comprehensively, we can say that this is a song which is reflective of prominent factors in Lil Uzi Vert’s life at the time he wrote. He was in a serious yet troubled romance with a certain lady, whom he respects and loves enough to actually namedrop. He was also dealing with an affliction akin to general depression and related issues. Additionally, we all know Uzi Vert is quite paid.

Now as for the title of this track,  XO  is in fact a popular term  associated with romance . However, that is not the purpose it serves in this case. Rather it is a roundabout shoutout to The Weeknd, who founded a label in 2012 called XO Records. And the reason Uzi Vert was compelled to give a shoutout to the Canadian crooner in such a fashion is that he actually served as one of Abel’s opening acts during his  Starboy: Legend of the Fall Tour  in 2017. In other words, he and The Weeknd are serious homeys. Moreover, we see that the word “tour” also made it into the title. But as for the “Llif3”, that obviously reads like some type of alternate spelling of the word “life”.

Lyrics of "XO Tour Llif3"

Music Videos

There are three different music videos to this song, so to speak. The first was issued by Uzi Vert via his YouTube channel. It is an animated affair by an artist named Andrew William Ralph. The second, a lyric video, had Jered Harrison as its director. And the official music video was actually directed by Virgil Abloh, a prominent fashion designer who is especially popular in hip-hop circles. And it features The Weeknd as well as a Canadian rapper named Nav. The latter also participated in the aforementioned tour.

Facts about “XO Tour Llif3”

This track was officially released on 26 February 2017 as part of Uzi Vert’s second EP, “Luv Is Rage 1.5”. Also it was later issued as part of Uzi Vert’s first full-length studio album, which is “Luv Is Rage 2”. And “XO Tour Llif3” served as the lead single from both of those projects.

This track is the most-popular song of the early part of Uzi’s career. For instance, it was the first time that he, as a solo artist, broke the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100 – where it peaked at number 7. It also made an appearance on the UK Singles Chart and charted in almost 20 countries overall. And it has been certified multi-Platinum in four countries, inducing Poland and Italy.  Moreover for the record, as of early 2020 “XO Tour Llif3” has actually been certified septuple-Platinum in the rapper’s home country of the United States.

“XO Tour Llif3” also blew up on social media. And its popularity spawned the  Lil Uzi Vert Challenge , where participants were tasked with  mimicking a dance move  that the artist created.

Moreover the tune proved to be so popular that Uzi Vert even  released a sequel , entitled “ P2 ”, in 2020.

Additionally the reputable crowdsourcing music site  Genius  actually deemed this track  “The Best Song of 2017” .

Production and Writing Credits

“XO Tour Llif3” was the first track TM88, who would go on to become a regular collaborator of Lil Uzi Vert, produced for the rapper. And as the story goes he completed the project using an outdated computer and a Bluetooth speaker called a Beats Pill. This was due to challenges he was facing with his normal laptop.

The other co-producer of the track is an artist by the name of JW Lucas. And “XO Tour Llif3” was written by Uzi in conjunction with TM88 and JW Lucas.

TM88 has acknowledged that he was actually sitting on the beat which ultimately served as the instrumental basis for “XO Tour Llif3” for a while.  He and JW Lucas had been shopping it, “but it didn’t reach”, as in it wasn’t actually purchased by any potential clients. So he reworked it for Uzi Vert.  More specifically, he sped up the tempo so that the track would appeal to club goers.

From shaping contemporary R&B to overlooking his own XO label and fashion line, The Weeknd has become one of the biggest artists of the decade.

Published on

Weeknd RNB Empire

At the start of the 2010s, R&B experienced a surge of artists finding easier access and means to share their expressive work to millions of online followers and willing listeners. While many paved the way for today’s influx of R&B into mainstream pop – Frank Ocean, Jhené Aiko, and Tinashe among them – one artist stands tallest among the originators: Abel Makkonen Tesfaye, AKA The Weeknd. Head of his own record label, XO, with its spin-off fashion line, The Weeknd oversees an R&B empire that leaves lesser artists dead in the water.

Listen to the best of The Weeknd on Apple Music and Spotify .

Musically, The Weeknd’s central sound is more complex than it first sounds. Those who stumbled upon the Toronto native’s mysteriously uploaded YouTube videos would learn this after the 2011 release of his first mixtape, House Of Balloons. An alchemy of genres ranging from moody, alternative R&B to 80s-centric dream-pop, House Of Balloons contains cuts that feel as if they were from another galaxy. The opening track, “High For This,” holds a distorted, razor-edge grind, while the titular track trips over a loopy interpolation of “Happy House” by UK punk/new wave pioneers Siouxsie And The Banshees.

‘Hot Sauce Committee Part Two’: Beastie Boys’ Fiery Final Album

House Of Balloons quickly set a theme of “sex, drugs and rock’n’roll” for The Weeknd’s lyrical subject matter. His attitude and raspy, almost spoken vocal delivery on “Glass Table Girls” and the repetitive encouragement “Girl put in work, girl, girl put in work” on “The Morning” set him as R&B’s latest bad boy. His style mirrors the penmanship and flavor of The-Dream and Bobby Brown , but it’s his longing falsetto-tenor that distinguishes The Weeknd’s signature voice as his own.

The Weeknd - The Morning

Following House Of Balloons with two more critically acclaimed mixtapes, Thursday and Echoes Of Silence , The Weeknd further cemented his melancholic vibe. All three mixtapes would be compiled into 2012’s remastered, three-part compilation album Trilogy – which was released under his Republic Records imprint, XO. If there is an all-encompassing term for what subgenre The Weeknd primarily occupies on Trilogy , “cloud R&B” might best describe it. Like its SoundCloud-branched companion, cloud rap, the sonics of cloud R&B are all about the trippy effects of drugs and how that’s reflected in the production, singing, and romanticized lyricism.

Wicked games

Amid The Weeknd’s three-mixtape run, he gained a notable fan: Drake , and it’s on the sedated midtempo Thursday track “The Zone” that Tesfaye’s fellow-Canadian appears. Drake raps “She in love with my crew,” a sly foreshadowing of the duo’s next collaboration, “Crew Love,” which appears on the rapper’s 2011 sophomore opus, Take Care . A featured cameo on that album, with a few writing and production credits on other songs such as “Shot For Me” and “The Ride,” would make for The Weeknd’s first taste of the international mainstream spotlight.

Trilogy would go on to be certified double-platinum in the US, ultimately rising to the top of critics’ decade’s-best lists. Aided by lead single “Wicked Games,” Trilogy added a throwback psychedelic rock aura to The Weeknd’s presentation; with their moody lighting and depictions of lonely journeys on highways, his stark, dark music videos also helped draw fans in, as did the signature unruly locks that he piled on top of his head.

The Weeknd - Wicked Games (Official Video - Explicit)

In 2013, The Weeknd released his debut studio album, Kiss Land , also via XO/ Republic, and on which he paired his style of cloud R&B with dark wave tones. It’s almost as if he married Trilogy with the post-punk sonics of Depeche Mode’s classic album Violator . Kiss Land ’s standout track, “Wanderlust,” continued on a retro wave reminiscent of the 80s Thriller -pop that Michael Jackson perfected. Come the release of his 2015 follow-up, Beauty Behind The Madness , and that sound can be traced to the Billboard Hot 100 chart-topper “Can’t Feel My Face.”

Beauty Behind The Madness catapulted The Weeknd to a stratosphere of his own with international success. The heart-racing horror and dramatic urgency lying in “The Hills” also helped that song to the top spot, while he’d receive an Academy Award nomination for “Earned It,” which appeared on the sultry soundtrack of the box office smash Fifty Shades Of Grey. Beauty Behind The Madness put The Weeknd at the forefront of pop and R&B music, winning him Best Urban Contemporary Album at the 2016 Grammys.

The Weeknd - Earned It (Fifty Shades Of Grey)

The Weeknd’s third studio album, Starboy , brightened his sound with an intergalactic retro vibe. The Daft Punk-assisted smash title track evoked a confidence from within the loneliness, with lyrics boasting of the riches and stardom that fame has given him. Following that No.1 smash, the remainder of the album stays on an upbeat wave with “Party Monster,” “Reminder” and “Six Feet Under,” persisting with trap-R&B undertones. “I Feel It Coming” closes the album on a similar Europop note as “Starboy”; The album would earn The Weeknd his second Best Urban Contemporary Album Grammy award.

2018 saw the arrival of The Weeknd’s first EP, My Dear Melancholy . In many ways, that record cycles back to the pioneering sound of Trilogy , particularly “Call Out My Name,” before continuing on a “Starboy” tip with collaborations featuring French producer and DJ Gesaffelstein. At the start of 2019, the pair released the single “Lost In The Fire,” on which The Weeknd croons “I can’t lose you baby,” circling back to his central theme of loneliness and heartbreak.

Gesaffelstein & The Weeknd - Lost in the Fire (Official Video)

Leading the way for XO, The Weeknd has drafted an all-Canadian roster that’s now making its impact on the current scene. Belly, who co-wrote “Earned It,” drafted singer Kehlani for a guest turn on his 2016 cut “You,” which is a distorted, warped, and sensual trap-R&B cut. Meanwhile, Nav has been making his mark on the current cloud rap, emo rap, and mumble rap scenes, most notably with his featured part on Travis Scott’s “Beibs In The Trap.” On “Bali,” Nav collaborates with an XO duo, 88Glam, for their turbo-fuelled trap cut. Interestingly enough, all these artists stay true to The Weeknd’s code of battling loneliness with the playboy ego.

Reconsidering what sets The Weeknd and his XO labelmates’ apart from their peers, it’s clear to see that their styles merge the contemporary with the throwback, placing listeners in the cocaine- and ecstasy-induced glamor of the 80s and that decade’s alternative rave scenes.

It’s not surprising that most of that pleasant debauchery took place, for most, at the end of the week.

The Weeknd

The Weeknd’s postponed tour of Australia is now canceled and ticket owners will be refunded.

The Canadian R&B superstar had initially scheduled an 11-date stadium tour of Australia and New Zealand, winding its way across both countries last November and December.

“The Weeknd ‘After Hours Til Dawn Tour’ for Australia & New Zealand is still in process of being rescheduled,” reads a statement from LN, seen by Billboard . “Whilst we continue to work through the rescheduling process with the artist, tickets for the existing 2023 tour will be cancelled with all ticket holders receiving a full refund accordingly.”

Ticket holders of the The Weeknd’s ‘After Hours Til Dawn Tour’ shows who previously held on to their tickets will be able to access a priority purchase window for the new tour in Australia and New Zealand when announced, the message reads, linking to a priority waitlist . All current ticket holders will receive an automatic refund.

The tour was originally announced last August with just four shows, visiting each of Australia’s big three east coast cities — Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane — and including a single date in Auckland, NZ.

Additional dates were added last September , boosting the itinerary to 11 across both markets.

The Weeknd’s tour is scrapped as Australia’s festivals market navigates turbulent waters. In recent weeks, the 2024 editions of Splendour in the Grass, Mona Foma, and Groovin The Moo, with soft ticket sales playing a part in each story.

The inaugural Soundcheck report, published by Creative Australia, found the climate for operating a festival was a “highly complex” one, with event organizers challenged with myriad issues, from rapidly increasing costs, changing ticket buying behavior and more.

In the U.S., he has landed seven No. 1s on the Billboard Hot 100 and four No. 1 albums on the Billboard 200.

On Australia’s ARIA Albums Chart, published last Friday, April 19 , the Weeknd’s hits collection The Highlights lifts 8-4 in its 167th week on the tally. It’s triple-platinum certified in Australia.

The Weeknd’s highly anticipated return to Australia and New Zealand has officially been cancelled.

The stadium outing was first postponed in November 2023 , just three weeks before it was due to kick off due to “unforeseen circumstances”.

Australian event ticketing company Ticketek informed ticketholders on Tuesday (23 April) that the Canadian singer, real name Abel Tesfaye, would not be making the trip Down Under.

“The Weeknd’s ‘After Hours Til Dawn Tour’ for Australia & New Zealand is still in process of being rescheduled,” Ticketek revealed.

“Whilst we continue to work through the rescheduling process with the artist, tickets for the existing 2023 tour will be cancelled. All purchased tickets will receive a full refund,” they continued.

“The Weeknd’s ‘After Hours Til Dawn Tour’ for Australia & New Zealand is still in process of being rescheduled”

Ticketek is encouraging ticket holders to join the waitlist for a forthcoming announcement to gain access to a priority pre-sale.

Originally, The Weeknd was due to perform 11 dates in the region including at Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium, Sydney’s Accor Stadium, Melbourne’s Marvel Stadium and Eden Park in Auckland.

The Weeknd launched his After Hours til Dawn stadium tour in summer 2022 and grossed US$130 million from 19 shows that year.

He returned to the road in June 2023 and completed 42 shows in Europe and Latin America, earning $220,985,529 at the box office from a ticket total of 2.2 million.

During the European leg, the star smashed Wembley Stadium’s record for sales with a traditional concert set up with 87,000 tickets sold. The artist also set a new attendance record for London Stadium after drawing 160,000 fans over two nights in July 2023.
