Whitianga Summer Concert: ZZ Top to lead return of international acts

"Four fantastic international acts" will star at the Gibbston Valley Winery Summer Concert, Taupō Summer Concert and Whitianga Summer Concert in February - ZZ Top, Pat Benatar & Neil Giraldo, Stone Temple Pilots, and The Angels.

"There's been huge anticipation on who will be performing next year, so it's time to get back to some great live rock and roll following the Summer Concert Tour having to take a break in 2022," said organisers Greenstone Entertainment in a media release.

It'll be 35 years since ZZ Top played their epic New Zealand show where they performed to a reported crowd of over 80,000 at Western Springs in 1987. These Texan Rock and Roll Hall of Famers are synonymous with beards, hot-rod cars and spinning guitars.

ZZ Top are famous for their mix of rock, blues, and boogie, with hugely popular albums such as Eliminator and Afterburner, which between them spent more than two years on the NZ charts, along with having produced instantly recognisable hits such as Sharp Dressed Man, Gimme All Your Lovin', Legs and La Grange.

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees Pat Benatar & Neil Giraldo are one of the most formidable power couples in rock history. With no fewer than 14 songs having reached the NZ Top 50 singles charts, and spanning a career of more than 43 years, hit songs like Heartbreaker, Love Is a Battlefield and We Belong are just some of the classics that'll rock concertgoers when we welcome them back to New Zealand after last performing at the Summer Concert Tour 10 years ago, in 2013.

Stone Temple Pilots bring a 90s flavour to the tour with the band's unique sound, considered to be a blending of alternative rock of the 80s and 90s with the hard rock of the 70s. Lead singer Jeff Gutt is sure to get the crowd going with hits such as Interstate Love Song, Plush and Vaseline, all of which have featured in the NZ single charts through the mid-90s.

Originally scheduled to perform at the 2021 Summer Concert Tour, The Angels lay claim to being one of Australia's longest-lasting bands. Photo / Supplied

Originally scheduled to perform at the 2021 Summer Concert Tour, The Angels lay claim to being one of Australia's longest-lasting bands, dating as far back as 1976 when they first released Am I Ever Gonna See Your Face Again. Their relationship with the audience is everything to them, and their standard of live music is sure to have every show rocking when they perform the likes of Take A Long Line and No Secrets.

Greenstone Entertainment CEO Amanda Calvert said: "It's been a tough couple of years for everyone, and we can't wait to play our small part in bringing back live entertainment to our fans and to give them something to look forward to in the summer of 2023."

Taupō, Whitianga and Queenstown are among New Zealanders' favourite summer holiday spots, and it's going to be awesome to see the regions humming with the tens of thousands of concertgoers expected to attend one of our shows.

"We've been a must-do on people's concert calendars over the last 12 years, and with a move to February for 2023 to circumvent other events taking place on our traditional January dates, we're excited that we'll be able to celebrate Waitangi long weekend at both our Taupō and Whitianga shows. We're looking forward to welcoming everyone along for an awesome afternoon of classic rock in February next year."

Review: Powerful Pat Benatar steals Taupō Summer Concert show from headliners ZZ Top, The Angels, Stone Temple Pilots

REVIEW: Perhaps the major concern when you rock up to watch any live concert involving iconic performers of the past is how much of their former glory has stuck with them 20... 30... 40 years after their prime.

By that stage, a band's line-up can change almost full rotation, so at what point does it become simply a cover band covering their own music?

New Zealand has hosted plenty of acts no longer even fronted by the lead singers that propelled them to superstardom - Van Halen without David Lee Roth (or Sammy Hagar), the other UB40 without Ali Campbell, Jefferson Starship without Grace Slick, Lynyrd Skynyrd without Ronnie Van Zant... Queen without Freddie Mercury for goodness sake - with varying success.

More from Newshub

Two of the bands on the this year's round of Summer Concerts - back after a two-year COVID-19 hiatus - fall into this category.

With this trepidation front of mind, the refugees of the washed-out and cancelled Whitianga show continued down SH1 from Auckland to that jewel of the North Island, Taupō, for the series opener. Replacement tickets, accommodation and petsitter had fallen into place surprisingly quickly, so that theme spread across the weekend.

After a three-hour drive, the refugees arrived to a traffic jam at the entrance to town, with the Taupō Amphitheatre situated at the northern extremity. Anyone simply passing through to southern destinations this day were in for a wait.

Gold-coin parking across the road was a pleasant convenience, while a non-paying audience settled into their deckchairs outside the fenceline to enjoy the music from afar.

Inside the grounds, enough portaloos and short waits ensured no-one had to duck behind the bushes. After a week of torrential rain across the region, sunhat sales were doing a roaring trade, as the heat ramped up.

Official records show Taupō reached a high of 26C, but it felt like 36C among the 17,500 that crammed into the bowl-shaped venue. Plenty of sunscreen was applied, but next morning, concert-goers would count the cost of body parts uncovered beneath the rays.

By the time the refugees arrived, local act False Heights had performed in front of their biggest-ever crowd. At next week's Queenstown show, Wanaka band Powder Chutes will fill the important 'fluffer' role.

The line already stretched 100 metres to the only merchandise tent and ZZ Top items would sell out long before they took the stage.

Aussie rockers The Angels were in full flight, smashing out 'Am I Ever Going to See Your Face Again', along with an inappropriate crowd response.

The Angels were formed as a pub band in Adelaide in 1974 by singer and bass guitarist Bernard 'Doc' Neeson, who sadly died of a brain tumour nine years ago. By that time, he was pursuing a solo career, so current vocalist Dave Gleeson was already on board.

Gleeson, who was six when the band formed, has had plenty of time to make their old classics his own and his youthful exuberance brought new life to their typically energetic set.

The highlight was 'Face the Day', during which Gleeson pulled off a passable cartwheel midflight, but others included 'Take a Long Line' and 'No Secrets'.

Next up, Stone Temple Pilots , another band that has lost its original lead singer Scott Weiland, who was fired in 2013 and ultimately died of drug overdose two years later.

These days, they're fronted by Jeff Gutt, who emerged from an online recruitment campaign in 2017 and has made a fine fist of recapturing Weiland's swagger.

"You guys smell great," Gutt told the Taupō crowd, referring to the aroma of freshly smoked marijuana. "Smells like Christmas."

If you're lucky enough to get close to STP as they kickstart their set with 'Vaseline', you'll find your heartbeat changing rhythm with the bassline through the speakers.

Many of the crowd had come specifically to see STP and their acceptance was the acid test for the newish frontman. The fans were not disappointed, with Austen Powers lookalike Dean DeLeo on lead guitar, brother Robert on bass and Eric Kretz on drums, as they were 40 years ago when they began.

Personal highlight was 'Sex Type Thing'  to wrap up the set, but 'Interstate Love Song' checked off a bucket-list song, along with 'Big Empty' and 'Plush'.

Most of the pre-concert conjecture around Pat Benatar centred on her apparent decision to dispense with her anthemic 'Hit Me With Your Best Shot' in response to the plague of mass shootings in the United States. How would she explain this to her audience?

Simply, she didn't - and didn't have to. Benatar packed her set with so many other hits, 'Best Shot' wasn't missed at all.

Now 70, any fears she might have lost her vocal power were quickly dispelled, as she belted out the following playlist:

  • All Fired Up
  • Live For Love
  • We Belong (an acoustic version, with husband Neil Giraldo on piano)
  • Promises in the Dark
  • Shadows of the Night (another acoustic version)
  • Hell is for Children
  • Love is a Battlefield
  • Helter Skelter (a soaring version of The Beatles classic)
  • Everybody Lay Down (for the record, the Shazam app doesn't work at live gigs)
  • Heartbreaker/Ring of Fire (an awkward mash-up of her own hit with a Johnny Cash standard)

Benatar has retained her immense power through the middle range. She may not have the same high end she once had, but a quick listen to her 1983 Live From Earth album suggests it was always missing from her live act.

Personal highlights were 'Hell is for Children' and 'Promises in the Dark', but Benatar's sweet rapport with the crowd simply stole the show.

ZZ Top may be the headliners for this tour, but by the time they took the stage, the natives were getting restless under the intense heat and the Texas rockers did themselves no favours with a setlist that strayed too far from the 'Greatest Hits' template.

With four legendary acts crammed into six hours, there's less need to pad with obscure band favourites and rambling guitar solos, but ZZ Top probably tried to play test cricket in a T20 format, spending too long peddling their long beards-blues riff schtick and leaving too many of their hits on the shelf.

If "here's one from our latest album" is the most deflating phrase uttered by lead singers, "here's one from our first album (the one that didn't make us famous)" must be a close second.

After a half century with the same line-up, ZZ Top recruited band tech Elmore Francis - or Kevin Bacon with a beard, as the STP fans described him - onto bass, when beloved Dusty Hill died only two years ago.

Yes, Frank Beard is the one without the beard, but Billy Gibbons is the personality of a band that seemed old - in a good quirky way - well before its time.

They included some of their best known like 'Under Pressure', 'Gimme All Your Loving' and 'Sharp Dressed Man', but made us wait way too long for 'Legs' and personal favourite 'La Grange' to wind up their encore.

Others like 'Tush', Sleeping Bag', 'Velcro Fly', 'Planet of Women' and 'Stages' never made the cut.

Give them a two-hour slot to work these essentials into their current playlist and a bit more space to showcase their musicianship, and this would still be a cracking show.

And, dare we say it, even a passing shower would have kept the audience engaged until the very end.

ZZ Top Concert Schedule ZZ Top is a legendary American rock band known for their blues-infused rock music, bawdy lyrics and long, red beards. ZZ Top tours include the 2017 Tonnage Tour, 2016 Hell Raisers Tour, and the 2013 La Futura Tour. ZZ Top live shows leave the audience laughing dancing and feeling like they are at a jam session with close friends, instead of a concert headlined by rock and roll legends. Their massive success has allowed all of their albums to reach gold or platinum status. The band's best selling album is 1983's Eliminator, which spawned the hit singles "Legs" and "Sharped Dress Man." The album went on to sell 10 million units, reaching diamond status and the 25 million records they've sold in the U.S. makes them one of the top 100 selling artists in the country. ZZ Top has sold more than 50 million albums worldwide, and they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame in 2004. ZZ Top Background ZZ Top formed in 1969 in Houston Texas with guitarist and lead vocalist Billy Gibbon, organist Lanier Greig and drummer Dan Mitchell. The name of the band came from Gibbons combining the names of B.B. King and Z.Z. Hill, when he noticed that many artists used their initials as their band's name. When ZZ King seemed too close to the originals he changed it to ZZ Top. The current lineup of the band consists of bassist and lead vocalist Dusty Hill, Billy Gibbon and drummer Frank Beard. ZZ Top's signature sound can best be described as blues-infused rock with elements of punk rock and new wave added through their use synthesizers. While Eliminator was the band's most successful album with 10 million albums sold, 1985's Afterburner was their highest charting album. All the singles from Afterburner were Top 40 hits and the album itself went on to sell five million copies. Other Top 40 singles include 1975's "Tush," 1977's "I Thank You," and 1981's "Gimme All Your Lovin'"Follow ZZ Top on social media: Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and Facebook.

Zz was great, but....

ZZ was great. Played most all the fan favs. Sound was spot-on. Still miss Dusty thougj ..RIP brother. Would have been nice if Black Stone Cherry got to play more than 25 minutes...will have to catch their full set some other time. Band is highly underated. Skynyrd closed out the show. Sounded ok, but in all honesty they were just too dang loud. Kinda killed the whole vibe.

Loved every part of the show!

Perfect seats , sound was very awesome and big screen behind musicians shown up close and personable.

Lynyrd Skynyrd rocked the house. one of the best concerts in years!

Best Concert

I took my mom for her birthday she has been trying to see Lynyrd Skynyrd for years. She loved it had the best time and so did I. I was not to impressed with ZZ top after the performance from Skynyrd.

Great show - seats were not good for view

The experience of ordering tickets was good. The seats at the Landers Center had a screen that limited the view of the stage screen. It would have been good to know there was a problem before I purchased the tickets. The show was great even with the screen issue.

A fantastic evening of great music!

Parking was easy, had great floor seats in the venue and had an awesome time! ZZ Top & Lynnyrd Skynerd were absolutely incredible. Great music and an awesome show!

My husband bought me the tickets for the concert for my birthday which is March 31st and i will turn 56 this year therefore I spent my teenage years listening to ZZ Top! I love them now as much as I did then but I never got to see them in concert till now and it was more than I expected!!!! I have been to a lot of other concerts but this has to be one of the best ever! IT WAS AWESOME!!!!

My husband and I had a blast....

We have a great time. Loved it and talked about for days.

Totally awesome

Should’ve seen them a long time ago but as they say, better late than never.

I absolutely loved it

It was awesome and a night I will never forget. Rock on ZZ Top ❤️

The Summer Concert Series, Taupō NZ, 2023

ZZ Top performing live in Taupō, New Zealand 2023. Photo by Doug Peters.

The Summer Concert Series feat. ZZ Top, Pat Benatar & Neil Geraldo, Stone Temple Pilots & The Angels

4th february 2023 riverside park, taupō, new zealand.

Review by Bridget Herlihy  with photography by Doug Peters .

With unprecedented weather events hitting the upper half of the North Island over the last ten days, many anxiously watched weather updates and kept all fingers and toes crossed that the three Summer Concert Tour for 2023 dates would go ahead. Unfortunately the Whitianga stop ended up being cancelled due to the weather related damage in the Coromandel, so all eyes were on Taupo to deliver the goods for the North Island. Fortuitously, in spite of showers being forecast for the day, the weather gods smiled upon Taupo on Saturday with an abundance of sunshine and heat.

Music festivals are synonymous with Kiwi summers, and by 10am hundreds had gathered outside of the venue armed with chairs, chilly bins and picnic baskets. With the cancellation of the 2022 concert tour (courtesy of the pandemic), thousands of punters were chomping at the bit for the return of the tour. The Taupo amphitheatre is a formidable venue for an event of this magnitude, and with the sun already beating down, many cleverly made a beeline for spots under the trees (which became prime real estate as the day went on).

As people continued to pour into the venue, Taupo-based band False Heights had the coveted opening slot for the day. The duo of April and Ashley Pirie delivered an enjoyable set of melodic acoustic tunes that kept the growing crowd entertained and tapping their feet. Being first on the bill is not always an easy task, but False Heights did a superb job – keeping the crowd both engaged and entertained with a series of their catchy and compelling original songs.

Beloved Australian band The Angels were the first international act of the day to take the stage, and suffice to say they kept the venue rocking for the entirety of their performance. The band had been on the bill for the 2022 tour, and although it was unable to proceed they promised to return for the 2023 tour. Clad all in black, it appeared that they made it their mission to make up for lost time with their energetic set. Formed in Adelaide in 1974, The Angels have a rich musical history, complete with a number of name and line-up changes. With brothers Rick and John Brewster on guitars and Dave Gleeson on vocals, it could be argued that the band remains in their prime. Kicking off with ‘Ivory Stairs’ from 1979’s ‘No Exit’, the band keep the rock n roll with a set full of classics including ‘Fashion and Fame’, ‘Am I Ever Going To See Your Face Again’ and, or course, ‘No Secrets’. It was immediately clear that The Angels were very much one of the big draw cards of the day, as the crowd sung along to every song at the top of their lungs. The Brewster brothers were in fine form, with their guitar playing prowess on full display, while energetic front man Gleeson strutted about the stage, even performing a cartwheel at one point. The band may be almost 50 years old, but they still have it in spades.

Listening to the banter from the crowd it seemed that many people had come especially to see Stone Temple Pilots; one of the beloved rock bands of the 90s and early 2000s. Admittedly, having missed their last visit to NZ, I too was keen to see foursome live for the first time. To say that their set was a highlight of the day would be a significant understatement. Appearing on stage they immediately stating how happy they were to be back on our shores, and wasted no time in getting proceedings started, with the opening bars of ‘Wicked Garden’ from their debut album ‘Core’ ringing throughout the amphitheatre. Quickly followed by ‘Vaseline’ and ‘Big Bang Baby’, STP illustrated that they are as slick and polished as they have ever been. Dean and Robert DeLeo (bass and guitar respectively) are drummer Eric Kretz and exceptional musicians, while front man Jeff Gutt possesses formidable charisma and stage presence, not to mention an epic voice which more than does justice to the STP back catalogue.

Having been with the band for five years, he can hardly be considered the ‘new guy’, and given that he had some sizeable shoes to fill by becoming the Stone Temple Pilots front man, he was – and is – exceptional. It was touching that he took a moment mid-set to acknowledge the contribution of the late Scott Weiland to the band, which was fitting seeing as the set was largely comprised of material from the band’s first two albums. Almost effortlessly he amped up the crowd and kept them energised and dancing in the mosh pit in the scorching sun, reminding the crowd to keep hydrated, and that surely beer is good for hydration and must belong to a food group. In terms of audience engagement he was second to none, as he spent all ‘Down’ on the barrier at the front of the crowd, quite literally singing over the top of the audience, while trying on a selection of hats from the audience, settling on a rather dapper white number. The set largely consisted of the band’s ‘hits’ and fan favourites, including ‘Big Empty’, ‘Plush’, ‘Interstate Love Song’, ‘Crackerman’ and ‘Dead and Bloated’. Before ending the set with ‘Sex Type Thing’, he stated “we love your country, and we are all going to move here”. The sooner the better.

After a brief break, and a much need opportunity to rehydrate, beloved Pat Benatar and husband/writing partner Neil Giraldo took to the stage. Hundreds had repositioned themselves from their respective perches to the front of the stage for the performance, choosing to be close to greatness rather than the relative cool of the shade. The band tore straight into classic ‘All Fired Up’, just as the sound from the PA died. For 30 odd seconds the crowd was left bewildered and begging for the sound to return, which is did just in time for the chorus, eliciting a huge roar of cheers erupted from the crowd. This was only a minor glitch in a day that had otherwise run like clockwork, and the rest of Benatar and Giraldo’s set was flawless. It’s hard to fathom that Benatar turned 70 very recently; her voice remains incredibly powerful and she hit the high notes over and over again without hesitation. She and Giraldo have also just celebrated their 41st wedding anniversary, having met in the studio when Giraldo was introduced to Benatar as a prospective guitar player for her band in 1974. The rest, as they say, is history. Their chemistry on stage and in their shared compositions is evident, and is a joy to behold.

Benatar also gushed about how happy they were to be in NZ, as at one point they were afraid that they weren’t going to be able to make it due to the weather. Needless to say the sold-out crowd were in agreement that they were over the moon to see the duo again after a decade. The set drew from their expansive back catalogue, and as Benatar admitted, “one of the things about being around so long is that you have a shitload of songs to choose from, and you can turn them upside down”. Which is exactly what they did with an acoustic rendition of ‘We Belong’ with Girlado at the grand piano, and ‘Shadows In The Night’ which saw Neil on acoustic guitar. Needless to say, these re-imaginings of the songs were exquisite.

The hits kept coming, with ‘We Live For Love’, ‘Promises In The Dark’, “Helter Skelter’, and a ferocious ‘Everybody Lay Down’ featured in the hour long set. Of course, no Benatar/Giraldo set would be complete without ‘Love Is A Battlefield’, which brought goose bumps and a tear to the eye. Finishing off with a medley of ‘Heartbreaker’ and Johnny Cash’s ‘Ring Of Fire’, many were left in absolute awe of Benatar’s voice and Giraldo’s epic guitar playing skills, onslaught of riffs and soaring solos, and quite rightly so. Not one iota of their sonic power has diminished over time.

After another brief break, the sound of a revving hot rod engine blasted out across the amphitheatre, heralding the imminent arrival of Mr Billy Gibbons and ZZ Top. Gibbons really needs no introduction, with ZZ Top having become firmly entrenched in popular culture decades ago. The beards, the guitars, and their own trademark of blues infused rock is unmistakeable. Sadly co-vocalist and bassist Dusty Hill passed away in 2021, but the band’s guitar tech Elwood Francis has been playing bass with the band since, at Hill’s request.

Gibbons and co rolled out a bevy of infamous ZZ Top hits as the sun began to retreat from the amphitheatre, including ‘Sharp Dressed Man’, ‘Jesus Just Left For Chicago’ ‘Gimme All Your Lovin’, and ‘Legs’. Each and every song was met with ecstatic cheers of delight, a clear indicator of the seemingly timeless appeal of ZZ Top. It was a treat to see Gibbons in the flesh; a man who clearly still loves entertaining the crowd and playing good old fashioned guitar rock.

The only band that was afforded an encore (the perks of being the top of the bill), ZZ Top finished off with blistering renditions of ‘Brown Sugar’, ‘Tube Snake Boogie’ and classic ‘La Grange’ before it was closing time.

Judging by the smiles on everyone’s faces as they went back to collect their chilly bins and chairs at the end of the set, they knew that they had just experienced a line-up that was extremely special. Credit must go to the tour organisers Greenstone Entertainment, who kept the crowd well informed about the day’s schedule and location of amenities throughout the day, and kept things running smoothly. If you haven’t had the good fortune of attending a Summer Concert Tour, make sure that you get along to one. There really is nothing quite like it.

Awesome concert, great job with enough amenities and food and beverages. Great line up, loved Pat Benatar. Saw ZZ top in 87 and was looking forward to seeing them again. Lynyrd Skynyrd and ZZ Top Announce 2024 Tour Dates

Lynyrd Skynyrd and ZZ Top will continue their successful Sharp Dressed Simple Man tour with additional dates beginning in March 2024.

The classic rock titans will start a 36-show run March 8 in Savannah, Ga. The trek is currently set to wrap in Ridgefield, Wash. on Sept. 22. Tickets go on sale Friday in most markets with an artist presale beginning on Tuesday.

Support will come from Black Stone Cherry for the March/April dates, with the Outlaws taking over beginning in August. You can see the full list of tour dates below.

ZZ Top and Lynyrd Skynyrd have toured together extensively in the past, including a lengthy string of dates in 1999 and 2000. Both bands relished the chance to hit the road together again earlier this year. "It was kind of a rekindling of kindred spirits,” Billy Gibbons told UCR in July as the tour kicked off. “It’s a little known fact that ZZ Top gave Lynyrd Skynyrd one of their first official paying gigs, way, way back in the day."

They’ve Been Doing This a Long Time

ZZ Top marked their 50th anniversary as a group back in 2019. Lynyrd Skynyrd the same milestone this year, which they commemorated with Fyfty , a four-disc box set. The collection takes stock of the Southern Rock legends’ storied history and also features a few unreleased recordings, including a live version of “Gimme Three Steps” captured during late guitarist Gary Rossington’s final show with the band.

Recent tour reviews

Disappointing! After spending $340 each for VIP tix (not even front row/meet and greet) the show only lasted 1 hour and 15 minutes, probably the shortest concert I have ever attended. The guys seemed a little tired and bored, which is understandable after 50 years together or possibly because they just flew in from England. The sound system wasn't the best either, way too much bass overriding their vocals.

ZZ Top performance was amazing.

The venue had some issues. The sound was very imbalanced in the beginning, almost could not hear Billy Gibons voice.

There was some trouble with the crowd too. Some people were fighting over standing versus sitting (it's a rock concert not the symphony, get up and dance I say!). In my opinion the usher was a bit too harsh on the dancing people. He was very rude to the ladies dancing and another guy ( just attending the show) even grabbed the arm of one of them. At that point it was way over the line. The people complaining about the non sitting attendees were very inappropriate (even got in my face), but nothing happened to them.

I am not sure about the finer details, but I do not believe the ushers were well trained in de-escalating conflict.

Well, they did not disappoint. After the warm-up act, Tim Montana (who, by the way, fit right in and was worth seeing), ZZ Top came out and were very loud, played all their hits, and were well worth the price of admission. Billy Gibbons even called out our fair city Cheyenne on more than one occasion. They were very entertaining and sounded great after all these years. Great time.
