The Beatles in Yellow Submarine

Yellow Submarine

Release date: 17th July 1968

"I loved Yellow Submarine . I thought it was really innovative with great animation. The Sea of Holes, the Blue Meanie syndrome - it's still great and I'm glad we were involved with it." Ringo
"I liked the film. I think it's a classic. I'm not sure why we never did our own voices, but the actors probably did it better because they needed to be more cartoon-like. (...) That film works for every generation - every baby, three or four years old, goes through Yellow Submarine. " George
"The idea for the Hoover, the machine that sucks people up - all those were my ideas. They used to come to the studio and chat: 'Hi, John, old bean. Got any ideas for the film?' And I'd just spout out all this stuff, and they went off and did it." John
"I love the Disney films, so I thought this could be the greatest Disney movie ever - only with our music. That would be a lovely mix. They didn't want that, though, and luckily it wasn't my decision. Looking back on the film, I do like it now. It's really quite interesting." Paul

Once upon a time… or maybe twice, there was an unearthly paradise called Pepperland - a place where happiness and music reigned supreme. But all that was threatened when the terrible Blue Meanies declared war and sent in their army led by a menacing Flying Glove to destroy all that was good. Enter John, Paul, George and Ringo to save the day! Armed with little more than their humour, songs, and of course, their yellow submarine, the Fab Four tackle the rough seas ahead in an effort to bring down the evil forces of bluedom.

When The Beatles' spectacular feature, Yellow Submarine, debuted in 1968, it was instantly recognisable as a landmark film. By merging the visual splendour of animation with a fantasy - adventure tale filled with peace, love, hope and of course, music, Yellow Submarine captured the essence of the Sixties. And by integrating the freestyle approach of the era with innovative animation techniques, it revolutionised a genre.

" The music, let's face it, was the inspiration for the whole film, " said Yellow Submarine line producer John Coates. Directed by George Dunning, and written by Lee Minoff, Al Brodax, Jack Medelsohn and Erich Segal, Yellow Submarine began its voyage to the screen when Brodax, who had previously produced nearly 40 episodes of ABC's animated Beatles TV series, approached Beatles' manager Brian Epstein, with a unique vision for a full-length animated feature.

Yellow Submarine sits aloingside the dazzling Pop Art styles of Andy Warhol, Martin Sharp, Alan Aldridge and Peter Blake.

" I thought from the very beginning that the film should be a series of interconnected shorts " remembers Yellow Submarine's art director, Heinz Edelmann. " The style should vary every five minutes or so to keep the interest going until the end". These styles included melding love-action photography with animation, 3 dimensional sequences and kaleidoscopic "rotoscoping" where film is traced frame by frame into drawings. "

The entire process took nearly two years, some 14 different scripts, 40 animators and 140 technical artists, but achieved its aims in producing a ground breaking piece of animation.

This visual feast is combined with a brilliant soundtrack of Beatles' music including "Eleanor Rigby", "When I'm 64", "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds" and "All You Need Is Love" creating a masterpiece that can be enjoyed by all.

The typeface in which the title is set is Westminster, devised at the Westminster Bank (which later merged with the National & Provincial to become the National Westminster) in the early 1960s in imitation of the MICR digits printed on cheques in order to make them computer-readable. As those were at the time the only contact most people had with computers, this typeface was often used to convey a "high-tech" or "futuristic" feel, but it looks horribly dated today.

276 Filmtrack Olympiad: Magical Mystery Tour and Yellow Submarine

33 tours beatles yellow submarine

Podcast: Play in new window | Download

Picking up where we left off ( 259: Sgt. Pepper Olympiad  ), lecturer/professor Gary Wenstrup and I resume the Olympiad series with a pair of releases featuring film score music, the 1967  Magical Mystery Tour  EP/album and 1969’s  Yellow Submarine  release. Owing to the unique issues, with the latter representing only four new Beatle songs and the former being a six-song double 7″ set, we got creative with the tracks reviewed.

Previous installments can be found  here . Gary Wenstrup’s site is  here .

Looking forward to hearing this. For me and, I suspect, other UK listeners, the track listing on the album version of Magical Mystery Tour remains disconcerting. Your Mother Should Know ought to follow the title track, as per the EP, thus giving you two uptempo songs in a row and creating a sense of wellbeing …

33 tours beatles yellow submarine

I’m a long-time fan of this podcast. I registered here mostly to comment that “See how they run” is from Three Blind Mice. I wasn’t sure whether the comment about not “attaching meaning” to the line means Mr. Wenstrup is unfamiliar with it or just that he doesn’t understand why Paul would be quoting it. I always considered it to be a fun quote from a nursery rhyme and admired the way it was used in different ways, to refer to (I assume) children running and stockings running.

Anyway, thanks for all you do with this podcast. I’ve been a huge Beatles fan going back to hearing them in kindergarten in 1964. I appreciate all I’ve learned and all the opinions I’ve heard here.

Help!

Did you know

  • Trivia The Beatles hated " The Beatles (1965) ," the television cartoon show of them, which was also produced by Al Brodax and George Dunning . When the producers approached them about this movie, the group agreed only as an easy way of completing their movie contract. They contributed a few old songs and four quickly produced numbers: "Only a Northern Song", "Hey Bulldog", "All Together Now", and "It's All Too Much". They were so impressed by the finished movie that they decided to appear in a short live-action epilogue to the movie.
  • Goofs The Beatles spot five Apple Bonkers taking apples off a tree. Only four Bonkers march and sound off before a Meanie Squad Leader.

Ringo : Hey, I wonder what'll happen if I pull this lever.

Old Fred : Oh, you mustn't do that now.

Ringo : Can't help it. I'm a born "Liver-pooler."

  • Crazy credits The lyric "All Together Now" is shown in several different languages while the song plays at the end.
  • Alternate versions The American version had a brief (less than one second) scene of Old Fred and the Mayor dancing together happily, bringing closure to the initial scenes of the movie. This footage was not included in the redone American version.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).
  • The interval in the movement of trains in rush hour is  90 seconds .

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.
