Capt. Scott is a USCG licensed 100 Ton Master Captain and has been fishing and diving the waters out of Ponce Inlet for over 25 years. Capt. Scott has competed in numerous offshore fishing tournaments, winning the Inaugural Fish Stock tournament in 2003 (formally the Striker). My father and grandfather first took me fishing when I was 5 years old. Over the years I have developed a passion and appreciation for the ocean and all the wonders it has to offer. I have caught monster fish, swam with wild dolphins, turtles, sharks and majestic Manta Rays, but most importantly I have experiences and memories that will never be forgotten. Allow me to share my passion with you, your family and friends and help you create the memories that will last a life time. Captain Scott is the owner and operator. Captain Scott is a tournament-winning fisherman, who has been fishing these waters since 1989, and has his 100-ton USCG Captain’s License. Capt. Scott spends several days each week spear fishing, he can see firsthand where the fish are and what various bottom structures actually look like. He also maintains good relationships with other commercial fishermen and captains which provides an excellent opportunity to exchange ideas and notes on recent fishing patterns. If you are serious about fishing or would like to introduce your family to a new experience, please give us a call. We look forward to helping you make the memories of a life time. I started fishing when I was 5 years old. In 1989 I moved to Central Florida to attend Stetson University, became a certified scuba diver, and have been diving and fishing out of Ponce Inlet ever since. Although I have landed plenty of monsters, I now find more enjoyment helping others experience the thrill of landing the fish of a lifetime. Read More

Fishing in the Sunshine State

Florida is known as the “Fishing Capital of the World,” and for good reason: with some of the best sport fishing year round in the Gulf of Mexico, incredible access to the continental shelf along the Atlantic Coast, and over 30,000+ lakes, Florida houses the most diverse set of species and the best fishing in the United States. We can’t say it enough, Florida fishing is where it’s at all year round. While some migratory species (like billfish) will still have peak and ebb seasons, you will find fun on the water no matter when you visit.

Fishing Florida's Coasts

**Florida Inshore Fishing** Inshore fishing in Florida includes everything within one nautical mile along either the Gulf or Atlantic coast. This will give you access to estuaries, bays, intercoastal waterways, and saltwater flats all along both coasts. The diversity of bays and flats across Florida make it a world-class inshore fishery. Beginners and experts alike flock here for everything from a family friendly redfish outing in the bay to a chance at a permit on the fly. **Florida Nearshore Fishing** Nearshore fishing in Florida will take you out to deeper waters with bigger fish, but remaining within sight of the coast. These warm waters are some of the best Florida has to offer where fish of all sizes can be found among the wrecks and reefs. Staying nearshore will reduce the travel time and increase the time you can spend fishing. Florida’s state waters are a great spot to bottom fish for snapper and grouper, fish the surf for pompano, and even troll for spanish mackerel, kingfish, cobia and more. **Florida Offshore Fishing** Heading offshore in Florida takes you into the deep blue, federal waters of the Gulf of Mexico, or the Atlantic Ocean depending on which coast you’re on. If you’re staying in the Keys, you’ll even have access to both, making Florida very unique. Commonly, good fishing begins anywhere from 20 to 30 miles away from the coast. The blue waters of Florida are some of the best places to be able to catch a multitude of trophy fish migrating through such as tuna and sailfish, as well as other seasonal fish like mahi-mahi.

Top Saltwater Catches in Florida

**Inshore Target Species in Florida** **Snook Fishing in Florida** The warm coastal waters of Florida provide the perfect fishing for snook as they prefer water above 60 degrees. They can be found cruising the saltwater flats, patrolling rivers, and even right off the beach or under bridges. **Tarpon Fishing in Florida** The silver kings of the sea, tarpon, are a prehistoric fish that have been around for 125 million years, and now reside in the warm waters of Florida's shoreline. These beautiful, metallic fish are known for being stubborn, strong, and highly acrobatic, and will test any angler’s skills. **Bonefish Fishing in Florida** Bonefish, or gray ghosts, are elusive fish that are highly regarded by anglers in their difficulty to catch. Florida, especially the Keys, are one of the most renowned locations to fish for them, as they cruise the flats at up to 40 mph. **And more!** Florida’s coasts are full of a diverse range of fish, giving you access to permit, pompano, mangrove snapper, and more. **Nearshore Target Species in Florida** **Grouper Fishing in Florida** There are several species of grouper that live in Florida, including the black and gag groupers. They are stocky, stubborn, and often territorial. Florida water’s are a perfect environment for them to hide amongst rocks, reefs, and wrecks waiting for some bait to drop by. **Snapper Fishing in Florida** Red snapper, vermillion snapper, lane snapper, yellowtail snapper, if you want snapper, Florida has them. With over 12 species of snapper around the state, there are plenty to choose from. Although they can often be found among the reefs and wrecks in statewater, different species will travel both inshore and offshore, so if there’s a particular species you’re seeking, it’s important to check where they’ll be at that time of year. **Tripletail Fishing in Florida** Tripletail can be found in great numbers in the nearshore waters of Florida gathering around free floating masses in the water such as grass mats and even trash. This makes them great for sight casting, and will put up an acrobatic fight full of long runs. **And more!** Although these three make up the nearshore grand slam for Florida, there are some other great fish to be found along the reefs and wrecks like Spanish mackerel, kingfish, cobia, and more. **Offshore Target Species in Florida** **Mahi Mahi Fishing in Florida** Mahi mahi literally means “strong strong” and when you get hooked on a line with one, you’ll discover that first hand. In the late spring and summer months, Florida is the place to find these dolphinfish, dophin, dorado, whatever you want to call them, you’ll find them. **Sailfish Fishing in Florida** The cheetahs of the ocean, sailfish, are a highly prized target for trophy fishing in Florida. Atlantic sailfish can be found cruising the deep waters as they migrate along the Gulf and Atlantic coast November through February, and sometimes even as late as April. **Wahoo Fishing in Florida** Wahoo are fierce predators, favored by anglers for their leap, jumping clear out of the water when on the line. They are even known to make last minute attacks on lures right at the edge of the boat. Wahoo can be found around the coasts of Florida year round, but are best in the summer months. It is rumored that they thrive after a full moon, giving you the chance to say you really caught a monster. **And more!** Catching these three big guys will give you the title of the Florida deep water grand slam, but there’s plenty more to catch out there. From amberjack, tuna, and more there’s plenty of water to search and big fish to be found. **Top Freshwater Catches in Florida** **Peacock Bass** The lakes and canal banks of Florida are one of the few places that give you access to some exotic freshwater fish like peacock bass and clown knifefish. These bucket list fish are prime at dusk and dawn, and will give you a chance to see their golden halos shine in the sunshine. **Hybrid Striped Bass** Hybrid striped bass, or stripers, are another bucket list fish that have been stocked in freshwater lakes and rivers across Florida. They can be found in deep water of the lakes, and cruising river channels throughout the day, depending on the time of year, and are a finicky fish but well worth the reward. **Largemouth Bass** Largemouth bass are an iconic freshwater fish of the United States, and are known to Floridians as the “Florida bass.” They don’t claim these bass as their own for no reason, Florida is home to some excellent largemouth fishing, and tend to be much larger than their northern brothers.

Best Places to Fish Florida’s Saltwater

**The Emerald Coast** **Destin** Some of the best fishing to be done in the world is in the Panhandle of Florida, and Destin is the perfect location to seek it. Originally founded by fishermen, Destin is known as the “World’s Luckiest Fishing Village” due to having a wide selection of fish variety, access directly to the Gulf of Mexico, and having one of the nation’s largest commercial fishing fleets. The “100-fathom curve” is just 12 miles offshore, which is some of the deepest of the Gulf. With year round fishing for snapper, shark, tarpon and more Destin offers everything from inshore fishing to offshore, as well as plenty of tourism activities to enjoy if you can get yourself off the water long enough. **Pensacola & Pensacola Beach** Pensacola and Pensacola Beach (PCB), are known for excellent reef fishing, with both natural and artificial reefs providing the area with plenty of grouper, snapper, triggerfish, sharks, and more. In fact, it was once known as the “Red Snapper Capital of the World,” only now beaten by Orange Beach, AL. With access to the river channel, three bays, and the Gulf of Mexico, there are many different ecosystems to explore inshore, nearshore, and offshore fishing. **The Gulf Coast** **Tampa** The Tampa area has hot summers and moderate winters, making for excellent weather with a year-round bite. From half-day Tampa flats fishing, to multi-day deep sea trips, and everything in between there’s plenty of fishing to be done once you escape the crowds of the theme parks. **St. Petersburg & Clearwater** St. Petersburg is considered to have a medley of fertile flats, mangrove-lined shores, canals, and barrier islands that provide excellent inshore fishing. Further to Clearwater adds all of these and shallow bayous. When you combine this amazing inshore fishing, to the area’s access to the Gulf and remote reefs, a prime fishing spot is created. Sarasota With access to Sarasota Bay, full of grass flats, oyster bars, and mangrove shorelines, as well as Big Sarasota Pass and New Pass that lead to the Gulf of Mexico, there are a variety of fish to be caught in Sarasota. The mix of salt and freshwater creates an estuary that is prime for both bait and gamefish to flourish. **Fort Myers** Way down yonder on the Caloosahatchee, the prime inshore waters of Fort Myers can be found, with just a short boat ride to the Gulf of Mexico. With the Caloosahatchee River, Estero Bay, miles and miles of canals and intertidal creeks, combined with great weather, there are some excellent fisheries to catch tarpon, snook, shark and more. **Florida Keys** **Islamorada** Islamorada is about one third of the way down the Keys, and is considered the “Fishing Capital of Florida.” Being next to Florida Bay, as well as having access to the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean gives anglers in Islamorada the advantage of being able to fish nearly every species that swims. The Gulf Stream is also only around 10 to 20 miles offshore, bringing sailfish, marlin, tuna and more closer to shore. **Key West** The Gulf Stream also travels close to Key West, making deep-sea fishing easily accessible from there as well. However what’s really special about Key West is the gathering of Atlantic tarpon, the silver kings. When waters warm during the late spring, tarpon will make their yearly migratory stop. This is the perfect time to get the Key West grand slam - tarpon, bonefish, and permit. **Key Largo** Key Largo is a great place to fish because it is a great place for fish. This is because warm, nutrient-rich water from the Caribbean Basin, mix with water flowing from the Everglades and Florida Bay. Key Largo is also the unofficial entrance to the keys, being only an hour away from Miami, making it an easy fishing destination to go to. **Marathon** The ability to go fishing year round in Marathon is just one of the reasons that fishing there is so popular. With beautiful, warm weather year round the fish are always biting. The other big draw is the ease of fishing in so many different environments. From fishing flats for tarpon and bonefish, to heading offshore for everything from mahi-mahi to sailfish, Marathon has it all. **Gold Coast** **Miami** Usually when people first think of Miami they think of the big city with high-rise condos and a booming nightlife, however just a short boat ride away there’s an escape from the busy city into the blue waters of the Atlantic coast fisheries. Between Biscayne Bay and the Bahamas only an hour away, there’s plenty of fishing to be done inshore and among the reefs offshore. Spend the day in the bays and flats for snook and redfish, or head out to catch the current sailfish cruise. **Fort Lauderdale** Fort Lauderdale is a special spot for fishing because within a 20 minute drive, you can fish both fresh and saltwater. The Atlantic waters surrounding Fort Lauderdale are teeming with life, and heading right off the beach or Hollywood Boardwalk into the crystal waters to do some inshore fishing snook or tarpon, or offshore for some billfish is the perfect place to start. **West Palm Beach** There is great fishing both inshore and offshore in West Palm Beach, however one of the biggest highlights is the direct access to Sailfish Alley. Sailfish Alley is a submerged canyon where billfish cruise right by West Palm Beach and is the best hotspot to hit to target your trophy. Mahi, wahoo, and more can also be found here and in the surrounding waters, making your day sure to be action packed. **Space Coast** **Cocoa Beach** Cocoa Beach has great fishing in the Intercoastal Waterways and deep water for kingfish, marlin, and more, however the real gem is the access to Indian River Lagoon System. This system is made up of the Banana, Indian, and Mosquito Rivers and are prime for targeting many inshore species, but especially redfish. It is also right on the northernmost border of the snook population. **Riviera Beach** Whether you’d like to deep drop along the reefs and wrecks, or go kite fishing for trophy billfish, Riviera Beach is the place to go. It is a sport fisherman’s paradise for targeting big fish like tuna, sailfish, and more. **Melbourne Beach** Melbourne Beach is one of the world’s premier locations for surf fishing. While relaxing with your toes in the sand, you can wet your line and have direct access to snook, pompano, shark, and more. With over 15 miles of pristine beach, there’s plenty of space to find the perfect spot and catch your next personal best. **Palm Beach** Palm Beach has excellent inshore fishing for snook, tarpon, and more, but what makes it special is also its namesake. Palm Beach is named after the Providencia, a ship that wrecked with over 20,000 coconuts that washed ashore and grew into palms. That wreck, along with other sunken boats, reefs, and rocks make it an excellent place to fish for amberjack, barracuda, and more.

Best Places to Fish Florida’s Freshwaters

**Fort Lauderdale** Although Fort Lauderdale is known for their sailfish fishing, it also provides access to a plethora of lakes and waterways of the Everglades and more full of bass, including the exotics. Whether you’re after a giant Florida largemouth, or the opportunity to make memories, Fort Lauderdale has it all. **Delray Beach** Nestled on the Southeast side of Florida between Miami and West Palm Beach, Delray Beach offers saltwater and freshwater fishing. On Lake Ida and the surrounding brackish canals, exotics , largemouth, panfish, and more are just waiting to be caught. All of these combined provide a unique fishing experience only to be found in Delray Beach. **Lake Okeechobee** Lake Okeechobee is a world-famous bass fishery covering 448,000 surface acres of water holding some monster largemouth bass. With plenty of vegetation and structure, species like bluegill, catfish, sunfish and more can thrive.

10 Bucket-List Fishing Trips in North America

From one end of north america to the other, there's no shortage of great fishing destinations waiting to be experienced by adventure-seeking anglers.

10 Bucket-List Fishing Trips in North America

Every once in a while, I'll stop and daydream about one day taking the fishing trip of a lifetime. Maybe I'll head to Brazil for peacock bass. Or to Christmas Island for a bonefish. Or maybe I'll visit New Zealand to fling a few mouse flies at the legendary trout down under. Or even find my way to Africa to do battle with a tigerfish.

But then reality strikes and remember I don’t have an unlimited supply of cash.

But that's ok, because on the North American continent, there is more than enough exotic adventure awaiting the adventurous angler. Adventure that can be found in spades on one of the following 10 bucket-list fishing excursions.

1. Alaska Salmon, Trout and More: In the eyes of many anglers, there’s no place on earth that can equal the majestic beauty of Alaska, not to mention the sheer variety of fish that anglers can seek to do battle with. From the big king salmon of late spring and early summer to the sockeyes of mid-summer to the silvers of early fall, the world's best salmon fishing is found in the 49th state. Add in 30-inch leopard spotted rainbow trout along with grayling and Arctic char – not to mention some serious northern pike fishing in places – and Alaska gets top billing for any North American bucket list of fishing trips.

2. Montana Trout : The Big Sky State is the hotbed of western trout fishing in the U.S. thanks to its endless miles of quick flowing freestone rivers, a number of epic spring creeks and a world-class tailwater or two. From wild rainbows that inhale dry flies to big browns that like to smash streamers to cutthroats that will devour hopper patterns, there's much to like about this massive Rocky Mountain state. Add in the chance for a bull trout and there's little doubt that Montana is the ultimate Grade-A bucket-list trip for anyone interested in trout.

3. Florida Keys Tarpon: From the mainland south of Homestead to Islamorada and on down U.S. 1 to Key West, the Florida Keys seem like one island and saltwater flat after another. With countless miles of beautiful turquoise water, sandy flats, mangroves, sea grasses and plenty of triple-digit tarpon, this is one of the great saltwater fishing destinations in the world. Especially if you hook up with Megalops atlanticus and spend upwards of an hour bowing to the king of the Atlantic.

4. Texas Bass: Florida has an argument for having the best overall bass fishing in the country. And the action is pretty good in Alabama and New York too. Add in the huge largemouth and spotted bass found in certain fisheries across California and they get a nod. And there’s Mexico, an enchanted land of sunshine and lunker largemouth on beautiful lakes like El Salto. But as good as those waters can be, it's hard to beat the bass fishing action in the state of Texas. From Amistad, Alan Henry and O.H. Ivie in the west to Lake Fork, Toledo Bend and Sam Rayburn in the east, there are dozens of headline-grabbing bass waters in the Lone Star State. And in many of them, there's a real chance to hook up with a double-digit giant, something evidenced by the 566 fish weighing 13 pounds or more – from 66 public water bodies and more than a dozen private lakes, no less – that have been entered into the state's ShareLunker program. But even if you don't hook a ShareLunker, almost every bass lake in the state has plenty of 7-, 8-, 9- and 10-pound lunkers. What's not to like about that?

5. Wisconsin Muskies : They are big. They are mean. They won't quit fighting. And they are hard to catch to the tune one for every 50 hours of fishing for them. But that doesn't mean that muskellunge – or muskies, for short – aren't there because the state fish of Wisconsin are found swimming in good numbers in 660 lakes and 48 rivers, streams and flowages. Difficult or not, if you do hook up with a huge muskie, it's a fight that you'll never forget. Especially if you hook up with a line shredding, lure mauling, rod breaking mega muskie like the current world record from Wisconsin, a 69-pound, 11-ounce behemoth.

6. Beaver Island Carp : If you didn't know any better, you'd probably swear that you're fishing on a remarkably clear tropical saltwater flat somewhere in the Caribbean. But the fleece that you're wearing will quickly remind you that you're wading a flat on the northern end of Lake Michigan near Beaver Island, not somewhere in the Bahamas or Belize. But pay no attention to the shiver you might feel on a cool spring, summer or early autumn day. Because that chill will soon be gone as you cast to, hook and do lengthy battle with a behemoth carp – a golden bonefish as some have dubbed them – that can weigh upwards of 30 pounds or more.

7. Pacific Northwest Steelhead : As one of the top sport fish in North America, steelhead – or anadromous rainbow trout – inspire an almost cult-like following by Pacific Northwest steelheaders looking for another fix of the potion that writer Chris Santella has described as the "tug is the drug." And when those steelhead anglers find it in the form of another smashing take of a huge sea-going chrome rainbow, the experience will leave them shaking with giddiness. And the willingness to be sleep deprived for days, to hike into rugged remote canyons and to wrestle with terrible weather conditions, all on the off-chance that they can experience the wonderful feeling of catching a steelhead all over again.

8. New England Stripers : While Atlantic Ocean striper numbers have dwindled somewhat, there are still a fair number of migrating stripers that move south along the New England coastline each fall. While the migration starts in earnest to the north and continues on down the Eastern seaboard, there may be no better spot in the world to sample the collision of big stripers and vast schools of baitfish than Montauk on the eastern end of Long Island. Catch an early autumn blitz here on a sunny September day – the kind of blitz that causes acres of saltwater to boil with feeding stripers – and you'll go to your grave remembering it all.

9. San Diego Sharks : Shortfin makos might not get the headlines that their great white, hammerhead or bull shark cousins do. But they should. Because they are a great adversary and then some along the Pacific coast near San Diego. Conway Bowman, a longtime World Fishing Network and Sportsman Channel television show personality, actually targets West Coast makos with beefy fly rods. And why not? When you can make a 30- to 40-foot cast, watch a shark eat your fly, see it take off on a mad run of a couple of hundred yards and then catapult wildly into the air, what's not to like about that? Jaws indeed.

Recommended

10. Biloxi Marsh Redfish : How good is the fishing for huge bull redfish – or red drum – that fin in mere inches of the clear wintertime saltwater found in Biloxi Marsh near New Orleans? "This place is insane," said Bowman, mentioned above. Indeed it was since one of Bowman's first experiences in the saltwater marshes near the Big Easy produced multiple fish over 20 pounds and an International Game Fish Association (IGFA) 20-pound-tippet-class world record red that weighed in at more than 41-pounds. "It's the best sight-casting I've pretty much ever done and I guess I've fished for just about everything." With that kind of action – not to mention a steaming bowl of crawfish etouffee waiting in the wings on Bourbon Street in the French Quarter – what are you waiting for?

We had an amazing time fishing with Viggson sailing. The two brothers were amazing with the kiddos and wonderful at cooking the fish that we caught. We loved it so much that we did the fishing trip 2x during our 5 day stay! Highly recommend!

Great trip! My guide was very knowledgeable and put me right on the fish! Hooked into 6 Atlantic Char and landed 5! Very awesome!

We saw many whales and the guide was kind and approachable. He also educated us about the whales while there were none to see and I actually learned quite a bit! Before we even boarded the boat, my boyfriend and I found a duck that was tangled in some netting and the guide jumped right in with scissors to help us free the poor baby (they are fine)! When we went fishing, all of us caught at least one fish and I think one lady caught 3! I would definitely recommend this trip!

One popular day tour takes you to Lake Thingvallavatn and the Bruara River, where you can expect to catch brown trout and arctic char. These tours often include pick-up from Reykjavik and provide all necessary equipment.

For those who prefer sea angling, various options are available. In Reykjavik, you can combine sea angling with whale watching in Faxafloi Bay , offering the chance to catch fresh fish while spotting minke and humpback whales, dolphins, puffins, orcas, and harbor porpoises.

In North Iceland, a sea angling tour from Hauganes is an excellent choice, taking you to  Eyjafjordur fjord, known for its diverse whale and dolphin species, as well as puffins. You can try your hand at catching cod or haddock, and the captain can fillet your fish on request.

These fishing tours not only provide memorable angling experiences but also offer the opportunity to explore Iceland's stunning landscapes and wildlife.

Fishing in Iceland is deeply rooted in the nation's history and culture, making it a unique and rewarding experience for anyone who loves fishing.

Fishing Vacations for Anglers

  • By Doug Olander
  • Updated: February 19, 2020

Anytime is a good time to go on a fishing vacation, but certain times are better than others, with various factors in play in the timing decision. For a lot of us, among those factors are costs — costs within our budget to embark on a big adventure for the year, or perhaps costs that allow us to squeeze in a second trip somewhere.

Some fishing operations (resorts and/or charters) offer discounted rates part of the year, most often during what could be termed their “offseason.” You should definitely research the most up-to-date fishing vacation packages available when considering a destination .

All anglers hooked up!

Considering that, I found nine such fishing operations, in prime fishing grounds in the United States and abroad, that do offer bargains part of the year. In some cases, the discount is modest; in others, it’s substantial. Most of the destinations are not necessarily all-inclusive fishing resorts, but some of them are.

Locations of the Nine Fishing Operations Highlighted in this Article

Map of fishing destinations

  • Casa Vieja Lodge, Iztapa, Guatemala
  • Crackerjack Charters, Seward, Alaska
  • Crocodile Bay Resort, Osa Peninsula, Costa Rica
  • Hawks Cay Resort, Duck Key, Florida
  • Keen M International, Isla Mujeres, Mexico
  • Kingfisher Charters and Lodge, Sitka, Alaska
  • No Boundaries Oman, Salalah, Oman
  • Tropic Star Lodge, Piñas Bay, Panama
  • The Zancudo Lodge, Playa Zancudo, Costa Rica

As you might figure, there are reasons for reduced rates, often less-certain weather conditions or the scarcity of some prime game fish species. But in most cases, there are also advantages to visiting in the offseason, some that might surprise trip planners. These are all bucket-list fishing destinations, not cheap fishing vacations. I found that many fishing operations offer no discounted rates, and some feel strongly against that practice. But at the same time, there are a great many more resorts/charters than listed that offer offseason bargains.

The following are listed alphabetically.

1. Casa Vieja Lodge (Iztapa, Guatemala)

Casa Vieja is a premier lodge with nine boats taking anglers out to experience the famed Pacific sailfish fishery here. The nine lodge boats (40-foot sport-fishers and 35-foot Contenders) have recorded days with a year-round average of 15 shots at 80- to 120-pound sails. Blue, black and striped marlin all show up on the grounds as well. Casa Vieja boasts of five-star service and gourmet dining.

Fishing for sailfish off Guatemala

The upsides: Flat seas are typical at this time. Marlin can be excellent and mahi numerous now. The resort is less busy.

The downsides: None, really. Discount is to offset many resort patrons who spend their summer months fishing back home on their own boats. Despite what many assume, the rainy season here doesn’t begin until September, so weather is not an issue. Note: The resort is closed June through October.

2. Crackerjack Charters (Seward, Alaska)

Crackerjack Charters has been a mainstay of Seward sport fishing for many years, with a 31-foot Farallon (for up to six anglers) and a 43-foot aluminum boat, custom-built for these waters (for up to 14 anglers). Trips range from half-day salmon fishing in Resurrection Bay to multiday outings in remote waters of the Gulf of Alaska. The silver (coho) salmon, for which Seward is particularly known, are popular targets in July and August. But big halibut, lingcod and rockfish can be caught most of the time.

An aerial view of Seward, Alaska

The upsides: Unlike during peak season, space on short notice is often available. Halibut enthusiasts often find some of the year’s best fishing during this “offseason.” The run to the fishing grounds is often shorter now than during peak season. Finally, Seward is far less crowded than mid-June through August, making it much easier to find reservations for accommodations and restaurants.

The downsides: The weather is certainly more unpredictable in May and, particularly, September. Along with beautiful days are likely to be windy, rough days. Fishing for silver salmon (which aren’t much around in June) and lingcod (closed through June) isn’t available until July. Crackerjack Charters closes from October through mid-April. May is a good month to take advantage of a Crackerjack Charters fishing/hotel combo; during June, you can take part in the annual Seward Halibut Derby

2016 Seward Halibut Derby winner

3. Crocodile Bay Resort (Osa Peninsula, Costa Rica)

A fishing operation and a whole lot more, Crocodile Bay Resort bills itself as a premier sport-fishing and eco-tour resort. Located near the bottom of the Osa Peninsula in the southern part of the country, it’s particularly known for roosterfish , sailfish and blue marlin, plus yellowfin tuna, among other species. The lodge is located on 44 acres of manicured rainforest jungle. For fishing nearshore and offshore, Crocodile Bay offers a fleet of 33- and 35-foot tower express boats and 24- and 25-foot center console Boston Whalers.

An aerial view of Crocodile Bay Resort in Costa Rica

The upsides: Summer months are actually the best time, as a rule, for blue marlin and dolphin , and rooster fishing nearshore remains reliable. September is the best month to experience the sensational migration through the Golfo Dulce here of migrating humpback whales, a memorable addition to any fishing day. Temperatures are generally cooler, and more precipitation means the rainforest is at its lush best.

The downsides: Sailfish numbers are down. Also, a flipside of cooler weather now is more rainfall. However, this is not typically all-day rainfall, but late afternoon/evening showers (by which time anglers are often back at the dock). At times, winds can make offshore a bit sporty but still fishable, plus inside the Golfo Dulce calm-water fishing is always available. Crocodile Bay is open all year. Main driver behind discounted rate is the fact that many Croc Bay regulars spend time from late spring into fall fishing north in Alaska or Canada and in general around home. Also, this time of reduced rates is particularly popular with families looking to mix eco-tour activities with fishing.

4. 4. Hawks Cay Resort (Duck Key, Florida)

Situated roughly halfway down the Florida Keys, this large, luxury resort is a gateway to fishing reefs and blue water on the Atlantic or, to the west, vast Florida Bay’s skinny waters. But Hawks Cay offers much more in terms of water-related and other activities. Guests can choose from a variety of rooms, suites and villas.

Hawks Cay Resort in Florida Keys aerial view

The upsides: Less competition for everything in the Keys, including guided/chartered fishing trips; a quieter time, with more couples than families booking late summer and fall; fall is generally an outstanding time to fish these waters, which also tend to be at their clearest in summer and early fall.

The downsides: Late summer can be oppressively humid (if you’re not in the water) and beyond commonplace thunderstorms, there is, into October, a definite risk of tropical-weather systems.

5. Keen M International (Isla Mujeres, Mexico)

One of the best-known charter operations that fishes the fabulous Isla Mujeres sailfishery, Keen M, boasts a fleet of three boats — a 41-foot convertible flybridge and a 36- and 34-foot express. Capt. Anthony Mendillo is widely recognized as an authority on this fishery, and specializes in bluewater fly-fishing.

Isla Mujeres, Mexico, aerial view

The upsides: Summer offers some of the year’s nicest weather and seas to be offshore. Things are less crowded around Cancun, and hotel rates are lower.

The downsides: Mainly that while sailfishing can still be quite productive, it’s definitely slower than in the winter. On the other hand, this is a perfect time for some great reef-fishing action and variety. Summer is also the time to book a trip to snorkel with the whale sharks (or do a full day, with half fishing and half snorkeling). That’s when these waters are home to one of the greatest concentrations of whale sharks and manta rays in the world. Keen M offers fishing year-round, though its three-boat fleet is reduced to one boat during fall.

Garrafon Park, Isla Mujeres, Mexico

6. Kingfisher Charters and Lodge (Sitka, Alaska)

This luxury fishing lodge sits atop a hill in Sitka, with balconies offering sweeping views of Sitka Sound. Guest rooms are generous and include full kitchens, though the lodge prides itself on its gourmet meals. Kingfisher Charters anglers fish from 26- to 30-foot Alaska-style cruisers, with enclosed, heated cabins.

Stunning aerial view of Sitka, Alaska

The upsides: May is typically peak time for king salmon , and regulations often allow for more-generous daily limits at this time versus later on. September is prime time for big silver salmon. Both months are great for halibut, lingcod and rockfish — and both months allow skippers to fish for halibut anywhere (Sitka Sound is closed to halibut fishing June through August).

The downsides: One of the few drawbacks is simply that you won’t get the variety of salmon during these months because May is king (chinook) time, but silvers aren’t yet around; by September silvers are thick, but kings are relatively scarce.

7. No Boundaries Oman (Salalah, Oman)

Offering what he calls “the total Omani fishing experience,” Ed Nicholas puts guests in modern lodges and takes them to prime Indian Ocean fishing spots in one of three 33-foot center consoles with twin 200 or 150 Yamahas. The Hallaniyat Islands, 30 miles offshore, remains barely fished and offers some of the biggest giant trevally in the world for No Boundaries Oman anglers.

Deep blue Indian Ocean around southern Oman

The upsides: Perfect weather and flat seas are prevalent. A great time for light-tackle variety fishing with plenty of action.

The downsides: The premier target here — ginormous giant trevally —are available but not in anything like the numbers during peak season. No Boundaries Oman closes May through most of September because that is monsoon season — very wet and very rough — and again in December and January, when currents are too light and winds from offshore (filled with sand) too strong.

8. Tropic Star Lodge (Piñas Bay, Panama)

One of the world’s pre-eminent fishing resorts, legendary Tropic Star , on the southernmost Panama coast, can be reached only by boat or plane. Located at the edge of the Darien jungle, the lodge offers 19 deluxe rooms. It boasts a fleet of 13 classic 31 Bertram sport-fishers equipped with top-notch tackle. While the coast off Piñas Bay is home to all the eastern Pacific’s game fishes, these waters are particularly known for their variety of billfishes. Besides large Pacific sailfish, three species of marlin are commonly caught: stripes, blues and blacks, often over famed Zane Grey Reef. More than 300 IGFA world records have come from Tropic Star/Piñas Bay.

Tropic Star Lodge in Panama

The upside: During these months, nearshore fishing peaks for coastal trophies such as big roosterfish and cubera snapper.

The downside: There are better months for marlin. Sailfishing can be plenty productive. Blue marlin are caught but not as often as during winter and late summer, and blacks are unlikely during this period. The resort says the increase in targeting the nearshore coastal game fish has really increased in recent years. Tropic Star closes each year during October and November.

9. The Zancudo Lodge (Playa Zancudo, Costa Rica)

Billing itself as a boutique fishing lodge, The Zancudo Lodge relies on fast, nimble center consoles, including two state-of-the-art Contender 32s for fishing both nearshore and offshore. The lodge, located just above the Panama border, sits at the edge of a black-sand beach near a remote jungle village. Besides fishing, visitors can surf, paddleboard, hike or zip-line the jungle, and more. Zancudo boasts of being rated among the top 25 hotels in Costa Rica by TripAdvisor.

Fishing out of Zancudo, Costa Rica

The upsides: This can be prime time for big schools of yellowfin, and not just footballs, but triple-digit fish. Blue marlin move in, and some days offshore during this time have produced double-digit marlin raised or released. Pressure is down now in nearshore fishing areas also.

The downsides: Yes, it is rainier during this period. However, that rain tends to take the form of late-afternoon scattered showers, often back at the resort after a day of fishing. The Zancudo Lodge is closed September and October, when rain throughout the day is most likely (though fishing remains outstanding).

10 Bucket-List Fishing Trips for Anglers on a Budget

10 Bucket-List Fishing Trips for Anglers on a Budget

Every angler has a dream. Whether it’s catching a certain species or traveling to an exotic location, there’s not a fisherman out there who doesn’t harbor some fishy fantasies they swear they’re going to do before they die. Unfortunately, many of these angling dreams often require dipping into the kid’s college fund or taking out a second mortgage on your home.

Giant trevally in the Seychelles may never be in reach for some of us. But, with a bit of planning and flexibility, there are plenty of world-class fishing destinations across the continent that will fulfill your dreams (or at least scratch the itch until you can get around to the big one). Budgeted out into seven-day expeditions, these are the perfect trips to get you off the couch, away from YouTube fantasies, and to start living your dreams.

Adventure in Alaska

Adventure in Alaska: Giant Salmon and Trout on the Kenai Peninsula From the mountains to the bears to the fish–everything about Alaska is big –but that doesn’t mean your budget has to be in order to fish there. For the DIY angler, there’s no better place to have an affordable Alaskan adventure than the Kenai Peninsula. According to Jackie Bowman, owner and head guide of Cooper Landing Fishing Guide , the best fishing on the Kenai Peninsula is right along the main highway.

“The Sterling Highway follows Kenai Lake and the Kenai River for most of its length,” Bowman said. “On the Upper Kenai in Cooper Landing, there are lots of parking areas on public land along the river where you can easily park and walk in. The Russian River is well-known for its easy wading access to excellent sockeye and coho salmon fishing–no bushwhacking required. The first run of sockeye salmon from mid-June until early July is headed straight for the Russian River, which is only ankle- to knee-deep in most spots, making it easy to spot fish.”

Countless other streams and the mainstem of the Kenai can yield truly giant Chinook salmon and native rainbow trout, as well as the suit of other resident and anadromous species. There are plenty of camping areas and public-use cabins along the entire route, averaging around $15 to $20 per night. While you will have to rent a car for the adventure, apps like Turo can make that cheaper with most cars costing as little as $50 to $150 per day out of Anchorage. All told, with a seven-day Alaska fishing license, the trip can be done for $800 after flights.

Tampa Tarpon

Battle the Silver King: Tarpon in Tampa Bay, Florida The promise of hooking a tarpon drives anglers to exotic destinations like Cuba and Costa Rica, spending thousands on plane tickets, lodges, and guides. While all these places are worth visiting someday, if you need to get your tarpon fix sooner rather than later and you need to do it on the cheap, there’s no better place than in the waters of Tampa Bay.

From May through July, tarpon storm the bay like an invading army, ranging in sizes from 60 to more than 200 pounds. The fishing can be hot and heavy, with anglers occasionally getting a dozen or more shots or hookups with fish on flies, lures, or bait. Though it’s not entirely necessary, your best bet at landing a tarpon is by hiring a local, inexpensive guide, usually costing between $300 to $500 per day. One such option is world-renowned fly angler and Tampa Bay guide, Brian Jill of Lost Coast Anglers.

“Tampa Bay offers an incredible opportunity to target big migratory tarpon and not break the bank doing so. It’s one of the easiest tarpon locations in the U.S. to travel to and try your chances at the silver king,” Jill said. While he recommends hiring a guide for targeting tarpon, Jill also said there is ample opportunity for DIY anglers to target other species.

“Come down for a week, spend a few days with a guide for tarpon, and then spend the rest of your time on the miles of public beaches chasing snook and other species like sea trout and redfish ,” he said.

With numerous hotels in the area ranging from $65 to $200 a night and a seven-day fishing license going for $30, Tampa Bay can provide one of the most memorable saltwater fishing experiences of your life for under $1,500 once you get there.

San Diego Bass

Become a Bassmaster: Largemouth in San Diego, California More than one angler has hauled a truckload of spinnerbaits , soft plastics, and crankbaits , to the Golden State with the hopes of breaking the double-digit mark with a bass. While that's a tall order in most of the country, it's very possible on some of the public big bass factories in the extreme southwest corner of the country.

“Almost every lake in the San Diego area has shore access or places to rent boats,” professional bass angler and MeatEater contributor Oliver Ngy said. “Whether you’re fishing Lower Otay, Lake Murray, or smaller lakes like Dickson, there are fish capable of hitting 25 pounds in every one of them.”

Oliver recommends most DIY anglers drive out or rent a car so they can move around to different lakes in search of the hot bite, which can vary depending on the time of year.

“Pre-spawn happens in mid to late February, and then after that most of the lakes fish pretty solid through the entire post-spawn,” Oliver said. “But on some lakes, the bass are going to be more active and you’ll get a great reaction bait bite when the water temp hits around 70 degrees. On good days you can catch 20 fish a day and on occasion, you can get into a fish in the high teens or even the low 20s.”

There are dozens of hotels in the San Diego area where rooms are available for under $100 and there’s a myriad of affordable campgrounds ranging between $18 to $40 a night, some right alongside good bass water. All told, with rental boat fees, a fishing license, and a hotel or campground, a DIY big bass venture to San Diego can cost as little as $600.

Nova Scotia Salmon

The Sport of Kings: Atlantic Salmon in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia Many anglers consider dry fly fishing for Atlantic salmon the holy grail of fly fishing. A fish of the aristocracy, in most places they are only available to anglers who can pay exorbitant prices to fish on private waters at extravagant lodges. However, there is one place where any fly angler with salmon aspirations can go and try their luck: Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia.

Thanks to some brilliant and long-standing legislation, all waters in the province of Nova Scotia are open to the public. Avid salmon angler and a local guide for 30 years, Robert Chiasson of dryflysalmon.com believes Cape Breton is the perfect place for an angler on a budget to fulfill their Atlantic salmon dreams.

“We have big salmon returns, inexpensive licenses, and no angling fees. Basically for $63 ($49 USD), you come here for a week and fish anywhere on the river. There’s public access on all the private property, no posted properties here, and the landowners are all friendly and very welcoming,” Chiasson said. “We have one of the longest seasons for salmon, starting June 1 and running all the way through October. Because the fishing changes almost continuously throughout the season, and we don’t fish the same water every day, it’s best to hire a guide for a day or two who can at least send you in the right direction.”

With plenty of free and inexpensive camping around the island, guide services running around $300 per day, plus a license, you can make your Atlantic salmon dreams come true for right around $500, post-flight or drive.

pike

Catch a Monster: Pike in the Adirondack Park, New York While there are many places anglers can find the giant pike they’re looking for, they often require expensive fly-in trips to places like Ontario and Saskatchewan. Yet for the intrepid DIY angler, some of the best and cheapest opportunities for a monster northern can be found right in the New York State.

Anglers can access some of the finest pike fishing in the country with just a canoe or small rowboat, which are available for rent in many areas. During the months of May and June, lots of fish reaching 40 to 50 inches crowd the weedy bays of lakes and rivers across Essex and Franklin counties in a hedonistic celebration of post-spawn gluttony. While there are plenty of options in the areas as far as bodies of water, your best bet for a truly giant pike are both the Upper and Lower Saranac Lake, Lake Flower, and Tupper Lake. All three are located along Route 3 running west from Lake Placid (another pike haven) and all three have many public access points and boat launches.

There are several hotels in Saranac which go for around $100 per night, dozens of campgrounds priced between $25 and $40 per night, and a plethora of free campsites and lean-tos along the route. With a seven-day license and boat rental, you can have a fantastic big pike adventure for around $400.

marlin

The Heart of The Sea: Marlin in Baja California, Mexico Few anglers have read Hemingway’s The Old Man and The Sea and not been inspired to head out onto the open ocean and test their will against a marlin. While there are a lot of beautiful and exotic places to try marlin fishing, the best bang for your buck has got to be Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, the marlin fishing capital of the world.

What separates Cabo from all the other marlin fishing destinations is the number of fish. The consistent water temperatures, deep water structure, and abundant baitfish make it perfect marlin territory, depending on timing. Striped, black, and blue marlin return there and can be caught many months of the year. With so many fish, Cabo is home to hundreds of marlin charters and captains, some of whom will take you out for as little as $300. However, in marlin fishing, you get what you pay for, so it’s worth spending a bit more to guarantee yourself a shot at the fish. But according to Jim Korphinski, owner of Blue-Sky Cabo Fishing Charters, there’s some wiggle room.

“You need to spend a bit of money, but most boat captains in the area are flexible and can adjust your charter to your budget,” Korphinski said. “For $5,000 or $6,000 we can go out and catch 10 marlin or more in a day, but if you only have $1,000 we can still go out and catch three or four. It generally goes down the scale from there.”

Marlin fishing is expensive wherever you go, but local guides with smaller boats can get you into fish for surprisingly low rates in Mexico. With hotels costing as little as $30 a night and licenses costing only $20, you can spend seven days in Cabo with a shot at a marlin every day for between $1,000 and $2,000 once you make the international flight.

steelhead

Metal Dreams: Monster Rainbows and Browns in Pulaski, New York Say what you want about whether the fish of the Great Lakes are real steelhead or not . Having fished for both the West Coast steelhead and their Great Lakes cousins, I’ve got to say that the adfluvial rainbows of Pulaski are as close to the real thing as you’re going to find. What’s more, unlike on the West Coast, the fantastic hatchery program and a significant amount of wild spawning in Pulaski yield an incredibly high number of fish from November to May, virtually guaranteeing you’ll have a shot at some chrome. And, if you don't, you might just run into the brown trout of your life instead.

Though there are a few options, the best bet for the DIY angler is in the Salmon River, which flows from the town of Altmar and through Pulaski before dumping into Lake Ontario. By following Route 13, which runs beside the river along its length, you’ll find plenty of public parking areas around famous pools where you can fish. With a few pointers from the local tackle shops, the Salmon River is an easy enough river to figure out. MeatEater Senior Fishing Editor Joe Cermele believes the biggest reason this area is ideal for the steelhead angler on a budget is because it’s so easily customizable.

“The coolest thing about Pulaski is you can make a visit anything you want it to be,” Joe said. “Like to sit on a leather couch by a roaring fire drinking Scotch after catching steelhead? There are plenty of fine lodges. On a Burger King budget? There are plenty of smaller family-owned motels that won't break the bank. On a ramen-noodle-in-the-microwave budget? Try the Super 8. Over the years, I've stayed in all these places, and to be honest, I've always had a better time piled into a cheap rental cabin with a few buddies than having to put on clean pants to go to dinner in the ritzy joints.”

With a ton of possibilities for lodging in Pulaski that range from $25 campgrounds to $300 lodges, how much you spend in Pulaski is up to you. But if you’re on the thrifty side, you could get in a full week there for as little as $400.

Pyramid Lake

The Land of Giants: Pyramid Lake, Nevada With the arrival of winter, many trout anglers begin to fantasize about heading to the Southern Hemisphere and places like Patagonia and New Zealand to land a truly monumental trout. But getting to those locations can cost an arm and a leg. For the winter trout angler on a budget, there’s another, much less costly option– Pyramid Lake, Nevada.

Situated just outside of Reno, Pyramid is a 125,000-acre lake home to some of the largest trout in the world, the Lahontan cutthroat. These massive fish can reach sizes up into the 40-pound range and are easily caught either from a boat or along the shore of the lake during a season that runs from October to June. Fishing Pyramid is simple: you just need to cast the right lure or fly as far as you can from shore and then retrieve it slowly or leave it suspended under a bobber. It only takes a bit of patience and a lot of luck for one of the monster Lahontans to come along and smash it, giving you a chance to perhaps land the biggest trout of your life.

The area around the lake has a ton of public access thanks to the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe who protect and manage the areas around the lake for fishing access. A three-day fishing license for Pyramid costs $62 and there are several hotels and camping sites in the area that range from $25 to $200 dollars a night. All in all, you can have six days fishing for giant trout for as little as $600.

Peacock Bass

Getting Smashed: Peacock Bass in South Florida Peacock bass are just about the fastest-striking, hardest-fighting, and most beautiful fish in freshwater. Just saying the name of these fish causes anglers to start fantasizing about long exotic trips to the Amazon that they might never actually afford. But, if catching a peacock bass is your dreams, you don’t have to travel so far to catch them. There are plenty of peacock opportunities on home soil, swimming feral in the waters of South Florida. Joe Cermele believes that traveling down to Florida for peacocks is a trip that every angler should do .

“I've written in the past that South Florida peacock bass should be something every American angler chases before he or she heads off to the big pond in the sky,” Joe said. “Pound for pound, I don't know if there's a freshwater fish you can target with bass gear that fights as hard. I'm a diehard smallmouth guy, but even they don't scrap like peacocks.”

Although the backdrop may not have the same mystique as the Amazon, Florida offers a plethora of locations to target peacocks.

“People ask me about chasing them around Miami. They're hoping for specific spots, but the reality is those fish are everywhere down there and there is no shortage of public access. You can walk canals for miles and hop to different culverts and drainage ditches all day long. One of the biggest peacocks I ever caught in public water was behind a chain grocery store,” Joe said. “If you want peace and quiet, go explore on the outskirts of town along the edge of the Everglades. But if you love an urban adventure, stick within the city limits. In my experience, the people have been friendly, and I've had some of the best Cuban food of my life at small mom-and-pop restaurants nestled in the neighborhoods where peacocks swim.”

There are dozens of inexpensive campgrounds and hotels in South Florida to choose from. With a little bit of research and some ingenuity, any angler can have a fantastic peacock adventure for around $500.

carp

Flats in the Farmland Wandering flats of the Florida Keys or Belize is a costly dream for many anglers. Yet if it’s something you just can manage to pull together, why not try looking a little further north? Along the North Shore of Lake Michigan are miles and miles of sandy beaches and shallow, hard-bottomed coves that provide some of the best flats fishing on the planet.

While you may not be pursuing vaunted saltwater flats species like permit , bonefish , or barracuda, the flats of Lake Michigan are chock-full of their freshwater counterparts like carp , smallmouth , and northern pike .

Just like on the tropical flats you’ve always fantasized about, the flats of the North Shore are all about sight fishing and making perfect casts with a fly or lure to large, ominous shadows. According to Kevin Morelock of Indigo Guide Service, who guides the flats around Beaver Island, the vastness of Lake Michigan and the size of the flats make the venture almost identical to saltwater flats fishing, with one major difference.

“If you’re after bonefish or permit, a good day may mean getting between 20 and 50 shots at a fish,” Morelock said. “The amount of shots you’ll get at fish up here is unparallel to any other flat fishing situation. We’re talking 75 to 200 shots a day. Between May and July, we’re talking about a ‘quantity of quality fish.’ I mean, we cast small flies for 30-pound carp, and you’re almost guaranteed a 5-pound smallie on a popper in June. We have pike just around the 40-inch mark coming up on the flats, and if you pair that with sight fishing, it’s pretty cool. That’s just pretty damn stellar flats fishing right there.”

There is an absolute myriad of campgrounds along the North Shore along with a couple dozen inexpensive hotels. If they’re creative, a North Shore flats angler can get up there and fish their heart out for around $300.

Live the Dream While the budgets on these trips don’t include the airfare, gas mileage, or the price of the gifts you’ll have to buy for your spouse to make up for taking off fishing for a week, they’re all still comparatively affordable. If you’re thrifty enough to sleep in your tent and eat instant mashed potatoes and wild game or fish, they can be even cheaper. In the end, it’s your adventure and you can fish it however you choose.

What Would Bass Pros Fish for if Bass Didn't Exist?

As we waded down a small creek near Bristol Bay, Alaska, trying not to fall over and fill our waders, Texas bass pro Keith Combs set the hook on a cartwheeling, hellbent-for-leather rainbow trout. It vaulted out of the water, and suddenly the unseen bears that he’d obsessed about minutes earlier were less onerous. He was going to get that 25 inches of glistening salmonid to the net. “This thing fights harder than any smallmouth I’ve ever caught...

4 Fantastic Fishing Trips For Kids

F or adults of a certain age, the thought of a family fishing trip might evoke memories of Andy Griffth walking along with a young Ron Howard.  Whistling as they strolled through the pines, headed off for a relaxing day on the lake just outside of quaint Mayberry, North Carolina.  In an effort to recreate this idyllic scene, you may even be tempted to pack up your family and strike out for the town in hopes of creating your own bonding time, much like Andy and Opie.

The trip would be much shorter than most Californians would assume, as the scene was actually filmed in Franklin Canyon, a man-made reservoir turned recreation area just outside of Los Angeles.  Franklin Canyon is gorgeous, and while it is well worth a visit, you’re more likely to run into the Rolling Stones shooting an album cover than you are a father/son duo from a black and white 1960s television show.

Before you rush off to create your own family fishing adventure, spend the time choosing the most important part….the destination!  We’ve put together several great locations spread around the country to help families sink their hooks into their own opening credit-worthy outing.

Park City, Utah – The Lodge at Blue Sky

There is no shortage of people who consider Utah the Promised Land, both figuratively and literally.  The rivers that formed the Martian landscape as they snaked through the desert are teeming with wading opportunities every angler will love.  Who knows, maybe the great fishing was the true reason for Brigham Young’s cross-country trek!

The Fishing

Ok, let’s get to the meat and potatoes of the trip.  The fishing.

The Lodge at Blue Sky , part of the Auberge Resorts collection, has a flawless reputation in the fishing tourism industry, and with great reason. Their partnership with a local guide service provides the local knowledge you need to land a photo-worthy target fish.  It’s no wonder fishermen from around the globe flock to their locations.  They’ve put together some great packages for families to choose from based on goals and time constraints.  All of their trip options provide the necessary gear, waders, and transportation for a successful day on the water.

Half-Day Wading Trip

There are two destination choices for a half-day wading trip. The Provo River (25-minute drive) and the Weber River (10-minute drive).  This is a great chance for a beginner fly fisherman to learn the basics of rod rigging, casting, basic knots, and fly tying, as well as the great diversity of trout species.  The whole trip takes roughly 3-4 hours, and all participants must be at least eight years of age .  Auberge also offers a full-day wading trip which travels further out to private property and includes lunch.  Offering a chance to further refine your family’s skills under the expert tutelage of your guide.

High Alpine Driftboat Trip

Families looking for a little more adventure will love this family fishing trip.  After a scenic 1 hour drive through the mountains, you will arrive at your destination.  A private reservoir tucked away in privacy.  Spend 6 hours with your guide as you target the elusive Cutthroat Trout. If ever you had the opportunity to land one, this is it.  This trip will last an entire day (6 hours) with a Max of 2 guests per boat and also has a minimum age of eight .

Heli-Fishing Trip

You came here for the ultimate fishing experience, right?  Well, here it is.  Board a private helicopter right at the Blue Sky Lodge and enjoy a scenic flight high in the Uintas Mountains.  After touching down in a remote mountain meadow, guests make the trek to isolated lakes and streams.  Here, they can try their hand in some of the least worked waters available besides experienced guides.  Before heading back, take the opportunity to enjoy a rustic lunch by the lake and let the experience sink in.  This trip lasts 4 hours and has an 8-guest max.

Is there anything cooler than a helicopter ride to go fishing? © Blue Sky Lodge

Gracies Farm

When Blue Sky first arrived, they found a beautiful landscape, excellent for artistic inspiration but ill-suited for farming.  The soil was hard-packed, over-grazed, and lacking essential nutrients.  Enter Blue Sky and their sustainable farming guru Lynsey Gammon.  A self-described ‘farmher,’ Gammon and her team of fellow farmhers have worked hard in pursuit of a successful grow operation without sacrificing their love of the soil.  You won’t see tractors pacing along straight lines for hours on end or sprayers misting fertilizer and pesticides in alternating increasing dosages.  Her all-natural approach has created an oasis of fertility and provides produce at the on-site farmers market from June-October.

Families wanting to add a little farm experience to their fishing trip can visit Gracies Farm on Tuesdays at 10:00 am. The farm offers a free 30-minute walking tour to all guests of the lodge.  This complimentary tour is an opportunity to learn more about their passion for sustainable farming.  If you don’t know the difference between a caterpillar tunnel and a high tunnel, this is a perfect introduction to a local small-scale farm.  If you’re looking to get a little more in-depth, maybe you’re a gardener yourself, then a private tour may be more your speed. Ask all the questions you’d like on a 90-minute guided tour to transform your garden back home.

Little Vaqueros Camp

All parents traveling with kids have been there.  You’re away with the family on vacation and put together a much-needed day of wine tasting or fly-fishing for the adults, but struggle to shake that feeling of guilt for leaving the kids behind.  Blue Sky has found just the solution with their Little Vaqueros Camp.

Each day of the week is themed to provide a full day of activities with a focus on engaging young minds, bodies, and senses with nature.  Counselors take kids ages 5-12 outside for adventure-based activities to learn about the local environment, history, and culture.  While the adults are enjoying their time away, the young ones are learning the basics of fishing, horse care, cooking, farming, mining, and even yoga.  Kids won’t be in a rush to leave by the end of the day.

The camp runs each day from 9:30 am to 3 pm with a provided lunch break from 11-12. Morning sessions of camp are complimentary. Afternoon sessions are an additional cost.  Full-day campers can enjoy a complimentary meal from the children’s menu.

Orlando, Florida – Lake Tohopekaliga

Yes, it is a mouthful.  The name dates back to the Seminole Indians who once lived around the lake and gave it the name.  Tohopekaliga is Seminole for “We will gather here,” but the locals refer to it simply as Lake Toho or West Lake to differentiate it from the nearby East Tohopekaliga.

Lake Toho, just outside Orlando, is considered one of the finest Bass fishing hotspots in the country, best known for the record catch set (with a five-fish limit) in the Bass Anglers Sportsman Society contest that came in at a total of a whopping 45 pounds 2 oz.

For those of you who have never fished Bass before, a 10-pound lunker is entering trophy fish territory.  The Florida Wildlife Commission performed a study of the lake that showed an average of one bass over 10 pounds for every 10 acres of lake.  With numbers like that, you begin to understand why this 23,000 Acre lake is so productive.  That’s a mind-boggling 2,300 wall-worthy bass!

Why is Lake Toho home to so many monster fish?  The lake is fairly shallow, with a maximum depth of about 13 Feet. Providing ample acreage for the grass flats that Bass shelter in during the summer months when the water temperature rises.

Freshwater fishing brings in billions of dollars each year for the state, so it is a priority for them to manage the health of the lakes.  This includes opening up the dam to allow large drawdowns in the Lake level to allow for man-made droughts to help control invasive plant species and ensure healthy algae levels.

AJ’s Orlando Bass Guide

AJ’s Orlando Bass Guides team of full-time fishing guides will ensure a successful and safe day out on the water.  How well do they know the Lake? The company is run by two fishermen, who also happen to hold the Lake records for the largest, and second-largest fish.  One of which weighed an incredible 16 lb. 10 oz!

They offer several varying length trip options from 2.5 hrs up to a full day of 8+ hours.  They recommend the 2.5-hour trip for families traveling with kids or for those short on time.

All of their trips include the necessary gear and tackle for the conditions of the day.  A day on the Lake with the kids can be a great way to break up a hectic trip to Disney.  Just don’t be surprised when the kids rave about the fishing to the family back home and forget all about the Magic Kingdom.

Saltwater Tours

If you’re looking to head out on the ocean to cast a line, Aj’s still has you covered.  They offer 4,6 and 8 hour trips that leave at first light.  The tours head out to either Cape Canaveral or Mosquito Lagoon on the east central coast and have a maximum of 4 guests.  An added perk of Saltwater fishing in Florida is the lack of a Saltwater fishing license requirement.

Wild Willy’s Airboat Tours

Yeah, Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone, which is pretty cool.  Not sending communications by mail is nice, but you know what is even cooler? Airboats.  Who would’ve guessed that the guy who gave us the telephone was also capable of making something as inarguably cool as airboats?  Thanks Mr. Bell!

Picture your family loudly zipping across the shallow water, dodging marshy shorelines and alligators while looking like the coolest cats in town.  Have you ever seen someone on an airboat that wasn’t happy? No.

Wild Willy’s Airboat will guide your family around Lake Toho on one of his two Airboats depending on the group size.  One-hour smooth flying tours leave throughout the day.  Make sure to book an earlier trip if you’re worried about the midday Florida heat.  Most riders are surprised at just how smooth the ride in an airboat is. Even those prone to motion sickness are pleasantly surprised.

There is no minimum age restriction , with kids as young as three months having enjoyed the trip.  Willy himself is a nature enthusiast and enjoys pointing out the Gators, Bald Eagles, and Snail Kites that call the Lake Home.  Don’t be surprised when he stops the boat to hop in the water and bring a creature up close for the kids to get a better look.  At the conclusion of your trip, take the opportunity to check out the animals on their property, including the chance to hold their two young alligators, Thunder and Half Stripe!

I bet if you zoom in, they’re all smiling! © Richard Sagredo

Where to stay near Lake Toho

Odds are this whole area would mostly be a swamp if not for the legendary House of Mouse.  Whether you intend on popping into the park to pay respect on your trip or not, the Disney Animal Kingdom Lodge makes a great base for your trip to Florida. A short drive to both Lake Toho and a plethora of theme parks, this resort features a stockpile of family-oriented activities in a fun atmosphere.

Hakuna Matata Playground

Hakuna Matata, it’s a wonderful phrase and a wonderful playground.  Hotel stays with kids can go sideways fast.  The jumping from bed to bed and the bouncing off the walls can leave parents feeling crazed and worried about bothering the neighbors.  Having a playground on-site to take kids that are being…..well, kids, can feel like a miracle.

The Hakuna Matata playground isn’t groundbreaking. It looks much like most playgrounds.  With two separate large features sized appropriately for their age groups.  There are various activities, such as a xylophone, a maze, and some speaking tubes.  The area is thoughtfully well-shaded to reduce the heat throughout the day, and the rubber mulch provides excellent drainage after the ever-present Florida rain showers.  Much like Yoda, don’t judge this amenity by its size.

Movies Under the Stars

Each night of the week, there is an outdoor movie available for guests of the lodge.  Luckily, Disney has no shortage of movie rights, and they are able to keep a fresh inventory in circulation.  The location of the movie is shared between the Hakuna Matata playground and the Pembe Savannah overlook.  Here is a handy site for checking the movie schedule, as well as a few extra tips for making the most of the evening activities.  The movies start at 8:30, which can be pretty late for the young ones, so you may want to consider putting on the pajamas before the opening credits.

Montauk, New York – Deep Sea Fishing

We’ve looked at some dream destination fishing trips for kids, but we’ve been mostly hanging out inland.  Where can we go if we want to add a little salt to our lives? Montauk, New York, claims to hold more fishing records than any other port in the world! Is it true? I have no idea, but I do know this beautiful location is a highly productive sport fishing hotspot.

Montauk is located at the tip of Long Island and formed by the same glacial retreat that gave us Cape Cod and the Islands.  The sun, surf, and tourists should leave many West Coast travelers feeling right at home.  Let’s look at some great options for a family in Montauk.

Susie E II Charter Fishing

Capt. Burt Prince and his crew are ready to take families out on the waves to enjoy some of the finest sport fishing available.  The 48’ Susie E II is well equipped to carry up to 33 passengers out into the waters off Long Island.  Equipped for both inshore trips and long offshore days, the Susie II features the latest technology to ensure a successful day, as well as keep your family safe regardless of what the ocean throws your way.

Susie E II Sportfishing offers several fishing packages that vary with target species as well as length of day and group size.  Their rates are based on a 6 passenger group, but they can accommodate larger groups for an additional fee.  Each trip includes top notch tackle and bait, as well as the Ice to keep the catch fresh.  Speaking of catch, their crew will clean and bag the keepers as families reel them in.  They will even handle camera duty so everyone can be in the pictures and parents can focus on savoring the moment and enjoying the day.

Cod Fishing trips

Cod might be the most popular fish in the Atlantic, but chasing it is not for the weak.  Peak season for Cod runs from December – April, which can lead to some frosty days.  Cod trips are a long day on the water, with the boat leaving the dock between 3 a.m. and 4 a.m. and returning 12 hours later.  Fighting Cod on light tackle is a wonderful way to spend the day, and the hearty family willing to take on the adventure are often rewarded with dozens of pounds of fresh fish to take home.

Shark Fishing

Everyone who has seen the movie Jaws knows sharks are the undeniable king of the ocean.  Their history predates trees by 100 million years and Dinosaurs by an additional hundred.  Seeing them in the wild can be a magical experience from the safety of a boat.  The powerful creatures are a favorite target species for fishermen looking for a worthy opponent.

The water off Montauk predominantly features Blue, Mako, and Thresher Sharks.  These fantastic beasts will provide families with a workout that is as hard as it is exciting.  Imagine hooking a Mako shark, able to reach speeds up to 50 mph, and battling him back to the boat as he launches himself 20’ in the air.  Or you can tango with a Thresher shark and their long powerful tail, which earned them the nickname ‘sea bull.  Some of these Threshers will leave your family working for hours to finally get the 300-pound monster on board.   If you thought that speckled trout gave you a fight, imagine one of these creatures tugging on your rod and reel!  Old tradition holds you should kiss the first fish you catch for good luck. Maybe best to skip that on this trip, though!

We’ve put together great locations around the country for families looking to sink their hooks into fantastic fishing trips for kids.

Deep Hollow Ranch

You don’t want to travel all the way to Montauk and not explore some of the scenic beaches.  What better way to travel the sandy shore than horseback?  Deep Hollow Ranch offers tours as rich in history as they are in natural beauty.

With options for the whole family, a stop at Deep Hollow will give everyone the chance to travel like a true cowboy.  Tours leave throughout the day 7 days a week, be sure to reserve early as tours can fill up fast.

The 1.5 hr option is restricted to ages eight and above .  Guides teach visitors about the history of Long Island and give them the opportunity to travel along the waves.  For families looking for a more condensed option, there is a 30-minute tour that allows children over six that is also an excellent choice for beginners.  The little members of the family need not worry about being left out.  Pony rides run for several hours in mid-day for children five and under .

Where to stay in Montauk

Montauk is a long way from the West Coast.  After all that travel you’re sure to be a little weary and in search of a haven for relaxing with the family.  The Roudtree Amagansett will check all the boxes on your list.  Peace and luxury in a warm family-friendly atmosphere.

Roundtree offers the opportunity to conveniently explore all the activities packed into the tip of Long Island.  Their ‘Signature Experiences’ service allows parents to sit back while they plan their day trips for you.  Let them put together a full day for the family with activities ranging from yoga and baking classes to tee times and massages.  They can even set parents up with a babysitting service and send them off on a tour of the area vineyards.

As part of their family-friendly atmosphere, each night, there is a campfire providing equal parts smores and songs.  During the day, their beach shack is loaded with enough sand toys to keep the kids entertained on the beach for hours on end.  The Roundtree Amagansett’s convenient location and family-friendly personality make it a great option for your Montauk fishing vacation.

McCall, Idaho – Shore Lodge

Every state is known for something. Florida has Disney, California has Hollywood, and New York has busy businessmen filling the sidewalks.  To many, Idaho is known as the land of potatoes, and it’s infamous 3-way tie for the state that most resembles a gun.  But fishermen around the country know the hidden truth about Idaho. It has hundreds of miles of deep rivers teeming with lots of fish.  Like good fishing spots around the world, spreading the word at the speed of a whisper has left many areas of Idaho largely uninterrupted.

High on the bucket list of any serious angler is the steelhead.  Often mistaken for a salmon, the steelhead is actually a member of the trout family, though much larger than most of their smaller cousins.  Anyone lucky enough to land a steelhead likely has a tale to tell.  As these powerful fish are pound for pound the hardest fighting species coming out of our freshwaters.  They use their speed to spool out a fishing line, launching themselves above the surface several times in a display that is equal parts terrifying and beautiful.

Sure, you’ve fished Spanish Mackerel off the Outer Banks and Mahi Mahi in Hawaii, but you know the key to a memorable day in a new fishing spot is a top-notch guide service.

Idaho Steelhead Guides

At some point in the timeline of their hobby, every outdoor sportsman has an entry-level existential crisis.  How can they love the land and still take joy in activities like hunting and fishing?  Over time, the outdoorsman adds techniques to their craft that ensure the species they admire can not only survive but flourish.  At Idaho Steelhead Guides , they not only strive to provide quality time for the entire family on the water but to do so ethically in a way that will preserve their waters for future generations.  Or, in wildlife conservationist Aldo Leopold’s words, “We abuse land because we regard it as a commodity belonging to us. When we see land as a community to which we belong, we may begin to use it with love and respect.”

Idaho Steelhead guides not only boasts of their several dozen years of experience on these waters, but they are also members of the ‘Keep em’ wet,’ the ‘Leave No Trace’, and the ‘Idaho River United’ initiatives.  So you can rest assured your whole experience will be as ethical as it is bountiful.

Single Day Trips

Their single-day trip options are perfect for families interested in adding a fly fishing trip to their family vacation.  The trips begin at dawn, and kids of all ages will have a great time soaking in the beautiful scenery as they float down the river in one of the crew’s several float options.  Tackle, rods, live bait, lunch, and life jackets are all provided by the team and included in their fee.

Get those steelheads! © Shore Lodge

Multi-Day Trips

These trips are perfect for the high adventure family with short attention spans looking to spend five days catching lots of fishing and making memories.  You’ll spend the majority of the trip fishing, unburdened with cooking, gear transport, ing and planning that can often bog down long family fishing trips.  Imagine waking up in a private backcountry campsite, sliding into your waders at dawn by the light of the campfire, and setting off on the private charter.

There are some Class IV rapids along the river, so you may want to wait a few years until the younger kids have a few more years under their belts.  The seasoned guides will safely navigate the rapids for you. Around mid-day, you may even see crew members leapfrog your boat off to set up the next campsite prior to your arrival.

Where to Stay in McCall

Here’s a riddle.  What has 77 guest rooms, 5,500’ of elevation, and is conveniently located just 90 minutes outside of Boise?  If you guessed the Shore Lodge , congratulations, you are correct.  Shore Lodge is located right on Payette Lake, and its 5,000 acres of deep freshwater is filled with all types of fish.  Shore is the perfect place to take the young anglers in your life to get them out on the water.

Shore Lodge offers several room options.  Families traveling with young kids may find it helpful to have direct outdoor access to let them stretch their legs without corralling them down the hallway.  The Lake Front Suites offer immediate access to the lake with a private seating area in the room and an outdoor patio just outside the door.

In the colder months, kids will enjoy a hot fire after a long day of snowshoeing or snowmobiling on nearby Brundage Mountain.  Their Fireside Suites contain a fireplace in the comfort of the living room, with a dining table and a private outdoor terrace.  The Fireside Suites are available with king or double queen bed options.

Make family memories on the water and in the room © Blue Sky Lodge.

Shore Lodge prides itself on being a 4 season destination.  They make it a point to offer year-round activities for everyone.  Whether you’re enjoying a parent’s getaway or you’ve got a gaggle of young children tagging along, they’ve got you covered.

Brundage Mountain

In the winter months, the proximity to Brundage Mountain pays off.  Here, guests can enjoy miles of snowshoeing and snowmobiling trails.  Hire a guide, and explore the snow-covered landscape or rent snowshoes to show the kids you’re still top dog.

Steelhead Guides

Come Spring, it’s the perfect time to book a kids’ fishing charter with Idaho Steelhead Guides.  If you aren’t afraid of getting wet, this is a great time of year to try on a rafting trip and learn why Idaho has earned the nickname “The Whitewater State.”  Take a trip down ‘Hell’s Canyon,’ the deepest gorge in North America.

Hot Spring, Mines and Links

Don’t think for a second that the heat of summer slows things down at Shore Lodge.  Take out one of their canoes or paddleboards and explore the lake.  Or enjoy a guided 4-wheeler tour into the remote backcountry.  Ride out to take a soak in the Burgdorf Hot Springs or explore the Kimberly Mines .  If you’re looking for something a little more relaxed, why not hit the links?  As a guest of Shore Lodge you have exclusive access to Whitetail Club’s 18 hole 7,200-yard course.

Ponderosa State Park

After a summer spent outside, the cooler fall air can be the perfect time to get out into the woods and put in some miles.  Ponderosa State Park offers 1,000 acres of recreation for you to explore.  Take a hike up to Osprey Point and enjoy the perfect view of the lake.  Or, rent a mountain bike for the day and cruise the seemingly endless trails.

A family fishing trip can feel like a game of Whack-A-Mole.  Fleeting moments of blissful serenity interrupted by pleas for juice and snacks in between sibling feuds.  Proper planning, which starts with choosing the best fishing locations, can set your family up for success as you introduce the little ones to a variety of fishing sports.  Thinking about this family trip as a kids’ trip instead of just a fishing trip will ensure you won’t go wrong at any of these great destinations!
