The Chipmunks and The Chipettes are setting up a surprise birthday bash for Dave. Alvin invites and hires many people and celebrities to the dismay of Simon, before Dave returns home in dissatisfaction. Dave is disappointed in them, but agrees to take them to mini-golf, and meet the woman he has been dating for the past few months. While the Chipmunks like Samantha, her son Miles is a bully who physically abuses the trio. Later, the Chipmunks find an engagement ring in a bag Dave brought home and believe that he's going to propose to Samantha. They try to steal the ring but are unsuccessful.

Dave has to produce a record for Ashley Grey in Miami and decides to bring Samantha along with him. The Chipmunks and Miles are staying together, but they agree to head to Miami to sabotage the proposal. The Chipmunks drug three squirrels and dress them up in their clothes to fool their hard-of-seeing neighbor Miss Price , who was tasked with looking after them. The Chipmunks travel on a plane, but Theodore lets out several animals which cause an emergency landing and brings the ire of Air Marshall James Suggs, who has a personal vendetta against the Chipmunks (Suggs' girlfriend left him while " The Chipmunk Song (Christmas Don't Be Late) " played in the background).

The Chipmunks head to a bar and perform (" South Side "), but this is interrupted by Suggs and they cause a bar brawl as a diversion. They jump into a cab sitting outside. After the cab driver learns they can't pay him, he kicks the four out of the cab. The Chipmunks and Miles rest, and he reveals that his dad left him when he was five years old. They raise money (by performing " Iko Iko ") to take a bus to New Orleans, and sing " Uptown Funk ," which gets the attention of Dave when it is broadcast on live television. Meanwhile, Suggs gets drunk and wakes up to find that he got two tattoos, one on his chest that reads "Sugg Life" and another of Alvin and the Chipmunks on his back.

Dave and Samantha meet up with Miles and the Chipmunks and are incredibly disappointed and the chipmunks and Miles are being punished for ruining their weekend. Because the Chipmunks are now on the No-Fly List, Dave has to drive the boys to Miami. When they get there, Alvin reveals that he stole the ring from the container, thus ruining the proposal. However, Miles had bonded with the Chipmunks and was upset that they were celebrating over this. He crosses the street with his headphones on and is almost hit by a car, but the Chipmunks swing Theodore and push Miles out of the way, saving his life. They agree to give the ring back.

During the dinner, Suggs catches up with the Chipmunks, but they trap him in an elevator. Miles and the Chipmunks return the ring to Dave, who reveals he never intended to propose to Samantha, and the ring belonged to his friend Barry. Dave is very disappointed in the kids, so they have a plan and try to make it up to him and get the Chipettes and Miles to sing a new song for him (" Home "). Dave forgives them and Barry reconciles with his fiancee Alice. Dave takes the Chipmunks to a courthouse where he officially adopts them. Dave claims that nothing could ruin his day, but returns home to see the squirrels had destroyed everything. He then predictably screams Alvin's name.

In a mid-credits scene, Suggs has escaped the elevator and decides to relax by the pool. He's told to leave since it's for hotel guests only, but Suggs refuses and says the only way he's leaving is if they carry him off. Two security guards are called in and do just that.

The film closed in the United States on May 19, 2016. It was a box office success, with a final domestic earning of $85,886,987 and a worldwide earning of $148,911,649 for a grand total of $234,798,636, making it the fourth highest grossing Alvin and the Chipmunks film. [5]

However, the CGI/live-action film designs of The Chipmunks and The Chipettes would be used for books, live appearances and promotional material.
  • This is the second Alvin and the Chipmunks film overall to have its music score composed by the same score composer as its predecessor after Alvin and the Chipmunks Meet the Wolfman .
  • In the opening scene, when The Chipmunks and The Chipettes are recording Dave's birthday message, the smartphone screen is facing toward Theodore. However, when the DJ calls, Alvin accepts the call from the back side.
  • Alvin would not have been able to know that Theodore had pressed the flip button. The flip button is on the side of the smartphone that is facing Theodore.
  • When Miles and the Chipmunks first encounter each other, Miles hangs Theodore on a windmill blade by the hood. The windmill does a full rotation, but Theodore remains hanging by his hood.

alvin and the chipmunks the road trip

Now streaming on:

In the opening scene of "Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip," Alvin, Theodore, and Simon, the three chipmunks, throw a surprise birthday party for their dad/legal-guardian Dave ( Jason Lee ). But things get out of hand. Hundreds of people show up. A half-pipe is erected in the backyard and skateboarders careen through the air. A DJ cranks the tunes. All of this happens before Dave even arrives. Dave finally gets home (he saw news of his party trending on Twitter), throws everyone out and gives the chipmunks a good scolding. After that, the plot creaks into gear, but the opening party represents what is best about the movie: it's pure mayhem and it's entirely silly. Of course it's silly: a chipmunk is hanging onto the rim of a skateboard as another chipmunk bumps and grinds on lawn furniture below. While there's a lot that is gross (literally: fart jokes, poop jokes, crotch-hits, burps, urine, etc.), the whole point of the movie (and it's great that it has a point at all, considering the material) is that it is a series of random events where the chipmunks either incite a riot or calm one down with their music. Reminiscent of The Muppets road trip in " The Muppet Movie ," or of the musicals of Judy Garland and Mickey Rooney (i.e. "I've got a barn, let's do a show!"), or of those old comedies where the forces of anarchy bust up snooty drawing room parties, "Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip" embraces mayhem.

The chipmunks are Alvin (the ringleader), Simon (the glasses-wearing nerd), and Theodore (the roly-poly tag-along), voiced by Justin Long , Matthew Gray Gubler and Jesse McCartney , respectively. Dave, after the Birthday Bash Gone Rogue, lets them know he is extremely disappointed in their behavior. He is dating a new woman named Shira ( Kimberly Williams-Paisley ), and he wants the chipmunks to be on their best behavior when they finally meet her. On a group outing to play miniature golf, the mischievous chipmunks meet Shira's teenage son Miles (Josh Green), who makes jokes about super-Gluing them together. While the chipmunks like Shira, they are terrified that Dave is going to propose to her while on a trip to Miami. Miles is awful, he couldn't be their brother! The chipmunks also have abandonment issues, fearing Dave will no longer love them if he got married. They find an unlikely ally in this attitude in Miles, who doesn't want a new dad at all. The four set off on a crazy trip from California to Miami, to track down their parents and bust up the proposal before it's too late.

On the first leg of their trip, via plane, Theodore, holed up in cargo, sets loose all of the animals who then rampage down the aisles, parrots, goats, monkeys, freaking everyone out. The flight has to make an emergency landing. A mentally unstable U.S. air marshal ( Tony Hale ) proceeds to lose every last shred of dignity, sanity, and self-respect as he chases those evil chipmunks (who ruined his pristine flying record) across the country.

After the chipmunks find themselves on the No-Fly List (their pictures on the FBI's Most Wanted page), they take off by car, stopping off in Texas, where they perform on a wooden sidewalk, as a bunch of boot-tapping cowboys look on, throwing tips in the box. Later, they play in a ratty dive bar nearby and transform it into a raucous scene out of "Urban Cowboy" complete with line-dancing couples whooping it up. In the New Orleans French Quarter, they join an already awesome jazz parade, and transform it into Mardi Gras by whipping the crowd into a frenzy with a caffeinated version of "Uptown Funk." Director Walt Becker has a good feel for big energetic crowds. These are the most entertaining scenes in the movie.

There are some fun cameos, the best one being John Waters . He's there for just a second, but it's great, especially the comment one of the chipmunks throws his way. Jennifer Coolidge , a genius, is completely under-used as Dave's bizarre next-door neighbor. You can tell her character is insane, because Jennifer Coolidge brings insanity with her wherever she goes, and yet she's not given much room to do anything, unfortunately.

"Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip" is not a movie for kids that is embarrassed to be a movie for kids. The bathroom humor is a bit much, the product placement is out of control, and some of the women are too scantily clad for the audience demographic (enough with this already! Let kids be innocent as long as possible, please!) But in general, "Alvin" is funny and, sometimes, a little bit sweet. There's too much plot, and who really cares about Dave and Shira, but Tony Hale is a great villain, and the road trip sections are pure, uncynical mayhem. When the movie wants to get sentimental, it has the flexibility to do so. "Road Chip" also has a nice subtle message about families: families don't have to look a certain way. Families are not just people related by blood. A family is people who love and take care of each other.

ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS: THE STORY SO FAR

Cue the chipmunks: the great big chipmunks music finale, our furry planet, weta and the chipmunks: animators’ reference reel, ultimate playlist, redfoo “squeaky wiggle” dance instructional, after the party: a munkumentary, theatrical trailers, bound for georgia, road chippin’ through georgia, rotten tomatoes® score.

The chipmunks don't make very good movies, but hey, at least they're cute.

Half of this movie is, "Oh! This is what Chipmunks could have been!" and the other have is just "Oh. This is what Chipmunks have always been."

There is very little heart to all the mad rush in the movie.

Bashing your head against the wall would be more fun than The Road Chip.

Frankly, your children deserve better.

Irritating characters, little semblance of a plot, weak gags, and sub-par performances ... result in a film that doesn't even have enough going on to interest a five-year-old.

What I can say is this, though, if you are over the age of, I don't know, eight, I feel very, very sorry for you if you have to sit through this garbage with your kids or younger siblings

Normally dependable comic actors are wasted in roles.

The final product quite amiable nonsense.

The absence of long-standing series stalwart David Cross is a shame (Tony Hale can't quite fill the gap) but Jason Lee is back, making it business as usual.

alvin and the chipmunks the road trip

By Neil Genzlinger

  • Dec. 17, 2015

Now would be an excellent time for parents of young children to invest in earplugs. A new Alvin and the Chipmunks movie has landed. This one’s called “Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip,” the fourth in the series, which began in 2007 and mixes live-action and computer-generated characters.

Why the Chipmunks still command an audience more than a half-century after their initial incarnation on novelty records defies explanation, but they do; the first three movies each earned a nine-figure box office gross. The third installment, “Chipwrecked,” in 2011, was somewhat chaotic and didn’t do as well as the first two; the new movie is a bit of a corrective, with a simpler plot and an abundance of catchy (if you can stand that grating, high-pitched harmony) songs.

It also puts the focus back on the boys. The Chipettes , a female version of the trio, had been hogging a lot of screen time recently, but here they’re relegated to support status. Alvin (the voice of Justin Long), Theodore (Jesse McCartney) and Simon (Matthew Gray Gubler) are concerned that their human minder, Dave (Jason Lee), is getting too chummy with his girlfriend (Kimberly Williams-Paisley). They reluctantly join forces with her obnoxious son (Josh Green) to travel to Miami, where they think Dave intends to pop the question, an event they plan to disrupt.

The shoddiness of the airline security they encounter is appalling. (Tony Hale of “Veep” has an undignified turn as an incompetent air marshal.) Some familiar songs are given the Chipmunk treatment, most successfully “Iko Iko,” which, it must be admitted, is well suited to their fingernails-on-a-chalkboard sound. The film delivers the standard upbeat message about family, along with one particularly outstanding and incongruous cameo that — sorry — won’t be spoiled here.

“Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip” is rated PG (Parental guidance suggested) for rude humor and language.

Educational Value

Minor lesson about families looking all kinds of ways.

Positive Messages

By far the movie's best message is that families come in all shapes and sizes and that a parent's love is unconditional. The Chipmunks learn that just because you disappoint or disobey your parent doesn't mean they stop loving you -- but it does mean there are natural or logical consequences to your behavior. Also messages about the strength of brotherhood.

Positive Role Models

Dave loves the Chipmunks, even though he's not the best communicator. He wants what's best for them and to keep them safe. He's also patient about their shenanigans (of which there are many). Alvin, Simon, and Theodore are close to one another and help each other. Miles learns the error of his ways and develops a friendship with the Chipmunks.

Violence & Scariness

Physical comedy includes gags where characters are mildly injured -- or look like they'll be hurt but then aren't. In one scene, a fight escalates to a full-on brawl. Toothpicks are thrown at a man's face, and they sink in for a moment. On an airplane, animals are let loose, causing mass panic and a few people harassed by pets running amok. A Chipmunk slingshot hits the air marshal in the groin. The air marshal has a gun and takes the Chipmunks and Miles into custody after an emergency landing.

Sex, Romance & Nudity

Some lyrics are suggestive -- like "I like big butts, and I cannot lie..." Some flirting and jokes about who's "hot." A human couple embraces/kisses.

Did you know you can flag iffy content? Adjust limits for Sex, Romance & Nudity in your kid's entertainment guide.

Instead of "Thug Life," a tattoo says "Munk Life." Insult language like "loser," "squirrel," "psychopath," etc. The lyrics of "Uptown Funk" are changed to say "heck yeah" instead of "hot damn" in the chorus.

Did you know you can flag iffy content? Adjust limits for Language in your kid's entertainment guide.

Products & Purchases

Lots of Apple gear: iPhones, MacBooks, etc. Other recognizable brands and companies include Speck tech accessories, Chuck E. Cheese, Altoids, American Airlines, Speedos, Pioneer, Beats headphones, Ford Mustang, BNW, Krispy Kreme donuts, Martinelli's cider, YouTube, Twitter, and more. American Idol plays a significant role, as the Chipettes are the judges. Off camera, the Chipmunks are featured on McDonald's Happy Meals and various toys, video games, and apparel.

Drinking, Drugs & Smoking

The Chipmunks and Miles play in a country & western bar, where adults are drinking, but the camera focuses more on people dancing. While in New Orleans, people march with beads and drinks, and the on-duty air marshal is offered two different drinks containing moonshine.

Did you know you can flag iffy content? Adjust limits for Drinking, Drugs & Smoking in your kid's entertainment guide.

Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip is similar to the previous movies and features many of the same kinds of jokes, pop culture references, pop/hip-hop musical numbers, and physical comedy. There's less chipmunk romance in this one, since the Chipettes are only in a few scenes, but Dave does have a girlfriend he embraces and very briefly kisses. There's a little bit of comical violence, mostly involving an air marshal who gets beaten up in a bar brawl and hit in the groin and has toothpicks stuck in his face. The marshal also drinks moonshine in New Orleans. Expect some rude/insult language and a few suggestive song lyrics (ex. "I like big butts"). The message, as always, is about the importance of family and teamwork, but kids may be too busy laughing at the scatological jokes and the silly gags to notice. I don't get it

Do not waste your time, what's the story.

In ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS: THE ROAD CHIP, Dave ( Jason Lee ) is busy with his star client Ashley's ( Bella Thorne ) upcoming record launch in Miami and wants to limit Alvin (voiced by Justin Long ), Simon ( Matthew Gray Gubler ), and Theodore's ( Jesse McCartney ) performance schedule so they can have a more stable adolescence. Dave plans to take his new girlfriend, heart surgeon Samantha ( Kimberly Williams-Paisley ) with him to Miami, and when the brothers find a diamond ring in Dave's luggage, they assume he's going to propose. The Chipmunks are less than thrilled with the idea of Samantha's cruel son, Miles (Josh Green), as their step-brother, and the feeling is mutual enough that they're able to enlist him to help them stop the proposal. The group attempts to fly to Miami, but chaos ensues on the plane, an angry air marshal ( Tony Hale ) puts the Chipmunks on the no-fly list, and the gang has to take an obstacle-filled cross-country road trip instead.

Is It Any Good?

It's easy to ask yourself why these forgettable Chipmunk movies keep happening, but the answer is simple: money. The first two made more than $210 million at the box office, and the third one still managed to break $130 million. So this fourth installment will undoubtedly be profitable, too, even if it's far from the kind of film families want to see over and over again. The one big improvement this time around is that the Chipettes aren't in it as much, so there's no cringe-inducing romantic tension except for a couple of throwaway lines when the Chipmunks are all together. The fact that the Chipettes are bigger artists with more fame (they're the ones judging American Idol ) is a clever way to have them in the story, but in a tangential way.

What continues to baffle is that, after all these years, poor Dave still trusts his three Chipmunks when they've repeatedly broken his trust and acted irresponsibly. And it's still really odd that well-known actors would voice parts in which their voices are unrecognizable. Why not just leave it to professional voice actors to voice the Chipmunks if no one can tell who's who? (Perhaps "money" is the answer to that question, too?) There are a couple of funny moments, usually courtesy of Hale's misguided air marshal, who becomes obsessed with punishing the Chipmunks for ruining his stellar career. But Hale, a multiple award winner for his role on Veep , is far too talented to be wasting a credit on this forgettable franchise fare. Otherwise, the most redeeming aspect of these movies is the undeniable, if familiar, messages about families looking many different ways, the strength of brotherhood, and the unconditional love between parent and child.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

Families can talk about Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip 's depiction of families. How does the movie portray adoptive and single-parent families? How does that compare to how they're shown in other movies/TV shows?

What consequences do the Chipmunks face for their behavior? What do they learn about jumping to conclusions? How could Dave have handled their communication issues differently?

Do you think there should be another Alvin and the Chipmunks movie? Do you prefer these live-action/CGI versions or the completely animated cartoons?

Talk about all of the products you saw in the movie -- and all of the tie-in toys, etc. available in real life. Does having a lot of "stuff" associated with a movie make you want to buy it? How can kids learn to understand when something is an ad?

Movie Review

Simon, Theodore and Alvin. These mischievous chipmunk brothers always seem to be getting themselves into some kind of hot water. This time around, though, it’s somebody else who’s turning up the heat.

It all starts when their “dad,” Dave, reveals that he’s feeling some heart palpitations over his new doctor girlfriend, Samantha. And it’s soon obvious that his malady is a bit more serious than just a few cardiac flutters. You see, the chipmunks have found an engagement ring hidden away in his bags!

Now, normally, that wouldn’t be such a bad thing. I mean, the “boys” have always wanted a mom. The problem is that this potential addition to their family already has a son of her own. And that nightmare of a teen, named Miles, has something of a propensity to torment small rodents.

Suspecting that a proposal might happen on a trip Dave and Samantha are taking to Miami, the chipmunks reason that there’s only one thing to do: They must convince the evil Miles to join them on a road trip and throw a few nuts into Dave’s matrimonial plans.

Positive Elements

A parentally abandoned teen derides the value of having a father, but the film ultimately makes it plain that dads are of great importance. In fact, Dave moves to legally adopt his chipmunk charges to prove his devotion to them and their well-being. In that light, there are several other statements made that laud any adopted or married-into family, no matter how mismatched it may seem. We’re also told that with the right effort and understanding, even the most conflicted relationships have a chance of finding common ground and, perhaps, even developing a close bond.

Spiritual Elements

There are general spiritual implications to the colorful costumes in a Mardi Gras parade.

Sexual Content

Women wear bikinis at a Miami beach and pool. And at a hotel pool setting, Alvin gazes at the scantily clad beauties and drools out, “If this is grounded … ground me for life!” At other parties, young women dance around in short skirts and short shorts, wearing cleavage- and midriff-baring tops. Samantha wears a low-cut dress. Alvin performs some hip thrusts while singing, and Theo warbles through a tune about “big butts.”

Violent Content

In the midst of any number of slapstick scenes, lots of different people are thumped or bonked with Three Stooges-like glee. The chipmunks and an air marshal (who’s chasing them) tend to get the worst of it. The chipmunks, for instance, are tormented repeatedly by bully teen Miles. He tosses the rodents around, dips one headfirst into a cotton candy machine, and pins another to a spinning windmill. He bends and twists Alvin around, bopping his head on a counter top to “prove” that he’s a stuffed toy.

The air marshal, on the other hand, receives some much more realistic thumping as he’s punched and battered in a brawling bar fight, bashes face-first into a road sign and gets hit in the crotch by a hurtling chipmunk.

Oh, and a group of wild squirrels rip a living room and kitchen to shreds with their teeth and claws.

Crude or Profane Language

Uses of “holy Christmas” and “crap.” There are several exclamations of “oh my god” and “oh my gosh.”

Drug and Alcohol Content

Alvin knocks out a bunch of squirrels by feeding them nuts dipped in cough syrup. In several party settings, people are drinking from plastic Solo cups or slugging back bottled beer and glasses of wine. Dave and Samantha drink margaritas. During a raucous Mardi Gras celebration the air marshal gets falling-down drunk and eventually passes out. He wakes the next morning with a hangover and two tattoos he picked up during the night.

Other Negative Elements

A number of belch-fart-poop-and-pee potty jokes pepper this pic, including one scene in which a hidden Theodore urinates and drops a, uh, chipmunk pellet while quivering with fear. The chipmunks break the rules repeatedly; they steal, and they run away from authority figures. While sonically distorted beyond all human comprehension, we still get approving nods to songs such as “Uptown Funk.”

What can you say about yet another Chipmunk movie? Surely nothing all that surprising. Or even enlightening. Although it is admittedly a bit astonishing that this talking and trilling trio of fur balls—given life over a half century ago by a silly novelty song—are still tenaciously clinging to their knothole in the pop-culture tree.

Other than that outrageous absurdity, there’s not a lot here that’ll shake your branch in any way it wasn’t already rattled by the first three movies. The completely predictable pic nibbles on wispy lessons about friendship and familial loyalty. And there’s even a quick-but-nice nod here to adoption. But mostly Road Chip just wants to update the Chippies’ song list to include squeaky versions of Top 40 hits that are toe-tappable, if lyrically indecipherable. And there’s a whole lot more of the same juvenile and silly nonsense that everyone’s come to expect from these chipmunk brothers as they dole out poop gags and fur-covered pratfalls that generally set off a cascade of chaos and catastrophe.

Is it cute? Sometimes, sure. Raucous? Definitely. A nutty treat? Well … let’s not go too far.

Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip

Dove Review

“Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip” is the latest adventure that the chipmunks share, along with a new love interest for Dave. Her son, an obnoxious young man named Miles (Josh Green), likes to do things like hang Theodore by his shirt on a Ferris wheel, and use a golf club on one of the boys like he’s a golf ball. However, due to unforeseen circumstances, they wind up traveling together with Miles. They actually begin to form a bond with Miles, partly due to escaping together from the clutches of an overzealous air inspector, who dogs them from the airplane they take to hotels, and from state to state. The chipmunks hated the idea of Miles ever becoming a brother, but now, they are okay with the idea. The film includes comedic moments such as Alvin acting like he’s a doll instead of a chipmunk and the three chipmunks acting like hood ornaments to escape the eye of someone chasing them.

Along the way to Miami the chipmunks and Miles, who are trying to break up Dave’s possible engagement to Mile’s mother, finally realize that maybe it would be a good thing. They endure a bar fight among the patrons and the air marshal’s pursuit, but rest assured everything will be okay by the time the credits roll. The film features a lot of music, and some of the songs are from the chipmunks or the chipettes! We are pleased to award “Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip” our Dove Seal for all ages. As one chipmunk says, as long as Alvin is around they will manage to get into trouble!

Review: ‘Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip’ is a nutty trip

When the first three films in a family movie franchise earn more than $1 billion worldwide, greenlighting a fourth installment is a no-brainer. Say hello, then, to the inevitable “Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip,” which continues the mix of live action and CGI-animated silliness that began with 2007’s “Alvin and the Chipmunks.” It’s harmless, zippy, candy-colored fun.

Based on characters originally created as an animated music group in 1958 by Ross Bagdasarian Sr., there have since been myriad movie, TV and direct-to video incarnations featuring the anthropomorphic cutups and their beleaguered human manager, Dave Seville.

In “The Road Chip,” the musical career of the ‘Munks — mischievous Alvin (voiced by Justin Long), studious Simon (Matthew Gray Gubler) and chubby Theodore (Jesse McCartney) — has been put on hold by father figure Dave (Jason Lee), who wants them to live a more “normal” kids’ life.

Meanwhile, Dave’s attention has become split between his new client, a rising young pop sensation named Ashley (Bella Thorne), and his new love interest, Samantha (Kimberly Williams-Paisley), an adorable emergency room doctor. But when Alvin, Simon and Theodore think Dave wants to tie the knot with Samantha, thus making her devious teenage son, Miles (an engaging Josh Green), their new stepbrother, the ‘Munks go into motion to stop Dave and Samantha’s pending engagement. Needless to say, the rodents’ plan doesn’t go smoothly — or quietly.

With Miles in tow (he’s equally disdainful of the Dave-Samantha coupling), the chipmunks attempt to fly from Los Angeles to Miami, where they think the visiting Dave will pop the question to Samantha. But a series of chipmunk-inspired air travel mishaps ground Miles and the ‘Munks, resulting in the titular road chip, er, trip. A nutty-frantic federal air marshal (a tiresome Tony Hale), out for chipmunk blood, also factors in. (A wacky story point involving the no-fly list feels extremely tone-deaf given current headlines.)

Director Walt Becker (“Wild Hogs”) keeps the action moving apace and fills his frames with plenty of fizz and shine. The film’s visual effects are nimble and amusing.

However, the script by Randi Mayem Singer (“Mrs. Doubtfire”) and Adam Sztykiel (“Due Date”), its inherent illogic aside — after all, this is a world where no one bats an eye at a trio of talking and singing chipmunks — never works up much real sense of tension or stakes. Sure, complications and mayhem abound, but it’s all fairly toothless stuff. Joke-wise, there are several solid laughs (gotta love the “Pink Flamingos” line), but much of the humor underwhelms. A few sensible life lessons are tossed in for good measure.

Lee, who, of course, lets loose several of his character’s trademark “Alvin!” shrieks, makes an appealing Dave and pairs off nicely with Williams-Paisley. As for the chipmunks, which also include the Chipettes (voiced by Kaley Cuoco, Anna Faris and Christina Applegate), they all sound pretty much alike: high-pitched and childlike but certainly lively.

Parents and their kids could do far worse than spend an afternoon together on this bubbly journey. Just don’t analyze anything too deeply — if at all — and you’ll be nominally entertained.

How to watch all the ‘Alvin and the Chipmunks’ movies in order

M oviegoers who enjoy musicals, comedies, and cute mischievous chipmunks are likely big fans of the  Alvin and the Chipmunks  movie franchise. In the series, three chipmunk brothers — Alvin, Simon, and Theodore — bring a whole new level of fun and hilarity as they navigate their way through life, all while trying to make it big in the music industry.

The three chipmunks and their human caregiver provide a one-of-a-kind blend of comedy, music, and heartwarming narrative. The films are not only intended for children since  Alvin and the Chipmunks  subtly explores relevant issues beneath the fun and frolic. Family, friendship, the trials of young adulthood, and the difficulty of satisfying both one’s own needs and those of one’s community are just some of the themes explored in the show.

Moreover, the films’ ageless humor can also appeal to adults. Those interested in an Alvin and the Chipmunks marathon can watch the eight films in any sequence. Still, we recommend watching them chronologically to eliminate plot holes, and here’s how.

1. Alvin and the Chipmunks  (2007)

The first film on the list is Tim Hill’s live-action/animated Alvin and the Chipmunks from 2007. In the movie, we meet the talented chipmunks Alvin, Simon, and Theodore as they deal with the loss of their tree and subsequent relocation to Los Angeles. Once the tree is on exhibit in the city, the chipmunks run into David Seville ( Jason Lee ), a struggling musician who hears their music and hires them. Dave is so impressed by the chipmunks’ singing that he forms a band with them and gives them the name “Alvin and the Chipmunks.”

Ian Hawke (David Cross) — a ruthless music businessman — takes the group under his wing as they become an overnight hit and uses them for his own gain. The film follows the Chipmunks as they struggle to stay close to Dave and each other despite the stresses of making it big in the music business. Despite their newfound success, the Chipmunks know nothing is more important than their friendship with Dave. This realization propels them to risk everything to save Dave from Ian, who takes him hostage. The success of  Alvin and the Chipmunks  led to the creation of several more films starring the endearing trio. The soundtrack — which features the Chipmunks’ distinctive high-pitched interpretations of popular songs — also did quite well commercially.

2. Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel  (2009)

The 2009 film  Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel  is the sequel to the live-action/animated  Alvin and the Chipmunks  from 2007. Betty Thomas takes the director’s chair to oversee the ever-entertaining Alvin, Simon, and Theodore’s next adventures. In The Squeakquel , Dave gets hurt at a benefit performance and is taken to a hospital in Paris, leaving the chipmunks in the care of Toby (Zachary Levi), his inept cousin.

The chipmunks then have the added challenge of preparing for the Battle of the Bands while struggling with typical teen problems like sports, cliques, and even love interests – creating countless funny scenarios. Also making their debut in  The Squeakquel  are The Chipettes – a trio of female chipmunks comprised of Brittany, Eleanor, and Jeanette. Like the Chipmunks, the Chipettes fall victim to Ian Hawke – the conniving former JETT Records executive who has fallen on hard times since the first film’s events. Charmingly and amusingly, the film weaves together the stories of the Chipmunks and the Chipettes, who start competing in a musical war that quickly escalates into a battle of the sexes.

3. Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked  (2011)

Third in the live-action/animated film series starring the chipmunks,  Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked  follows the misadventures of Alvin, Simon, and Theodore, along with their female equivalents, the Chipettes – who return in this 2011 film directed by Mike Mitchell. The plot centers around a vacation cruise that goes wrong. The Chipmunks, Chipettes, and their guardian — Dave — board a luxury cruise ship for some relaxation. Their vacation, however, takes a wild turn when the ever-mischievous Alvin accidentally sets off a chain of events that leaves them all stuck on a deserted island.

The island journey has its share of thrills and perils, putting the chipmunks’ survival abilities to the test. They search for food, explore the island, and encounter a potential volcano eruption. Meanwhile, Dave searches for the missing Chipmunks and Chipettes with the reluctant help of former record executive Ian Hawke. One intriguing subplot includes Simon discovering a peculiar necklace that causes him to act differently and adopt the daring alter-ego “Simone,” resulting in an unusual interaction between him and the others, particularly Alvin.

4. The Chipmunk Adventure  (1987)

Directed by Janice Karman and produced by Ross Bagdasarian Jr. — the son of Ross Bagdasarian Sr., who originally created  The Chipmunks  in the late 1950s —  The Chipmunk Adventure  is a 1987 American animated musical film that sees the Chipmunks and the Chipettes pitted against one another in a hot-air balloon race across the world by Claudia and Klaus Furschtein, two diamond smugglers who are up to no good. The siblings believe they are participating in a charity race they organized.

Unbeknownst to them, the diamond smugglers are using the race as a cover to deliver diamonds to various locations worldwide. The Chipmunks and Chipettes go on many exciting adventures, from evading a gang of locals in Borneo and saving a baby penguin in Antarctica to escaping a band of Arabian princes who mistake Brittany for a princess. The movie’s many musical numbers — in which the Chipmunks and Chipettes show off their singing and dancing skills — are among its many highlights. Favorite film tunes include “The Girls of Rock’ n’ Roll,” “Off to See the World,” and “Diamond Dolls.”

5. Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip  (2015)

The live-action/animated feature  Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip  is the fourth in the series. Walt Becker directed the 2015 film about the Chipmunks’ antics on a road trip throughout America. They set out to stop their father figure, Dave, from proposing to his new fiancée Samantha (Kimberly Williams-Paisley) in Miami and abandoning them. Joining the adventure is Samantha’s teenage son, Miles (Josh Green), who, like the Chipmunks, is not thrilled about the potential union of their parents.

From an overzealous air marshal (Tony Hale) to a legendary bar fight in Texas, their trip to Miami is full of humorous misadventures and hurdles. The journey brings about character development and bonding for both Miles and the chipmunks. The Chipmunks learn valuable lessons about the meaning of family, and they eventually accept that Dave will always love them, even if he finally settles down with a wife and starts a family.

6. Alvin and the Chipmunks Meet Frankenstein  (1999)

The animated film  Alvin and the Chipmunks Meet Frankenstein  premiered on home video in 1999. Filmmaker Kathi Castillo brings something new to the  Alvin and the Chipmunks  series with this entry, which successfully blends horror aspects with the film’s family-friendly tone. The action kicks off with a performance by Alvin, Simon, and Theodore in an amusement park based on the film industry called Majestic Movie Studios. However, Alvin’s shenanigans quickly get them into hot water, and they end up stranded in the park after hours. When they visit the park’s scary attraction, they are shocked to learn that it isn’t fake and that the famed horror character Frankenstein’s monster has been brought back to life by an ambitious doctor.

The Chipmunks don’t find the monster frightening; they find him to be a pleasant fellow who’s just a little disoriented in the modern world. They decide to help the creature, who they’ve fondly named “Frankie,” and strive to protect him from the greedy and evil scientist who wants to use him for his own gain. However, after experiencing the monster’s lifestyle, Alvin finds himself in a more problematic situation. Following the failure of an experiment, Alvin takes on the demonic traits of a classic monster, wreaking havoc and causing distress for Simon, Theodore, and Frankie.

7. Alvin and the Chipmunks Meet The Wolfman  (2000)

In 2000, director Kathi Castillo brought us the animated feature  Alvin and the Chipmunks Meet the Wolfman . Like its predecessor,  Alvin and the Chipmunks Meet Frankenstein  mashes the original cast and themes with traditional horror stories. Alvin, Simon, and Theodore are living a regular life when they start to suspect that their new neighbor, Mr. Talbot, is actually a werewolf and embark on an exciting expedition to prove it. Alvin, in particular, is obsessed with late-night monster movies, and his imagination runs wild, instilling fear and excitement in his brothers.

As the brothers continue their inquiry, Theodore is bitten by a dog (which they suspect is Mr. Talbot in his werewolf form). He begins to exhibit weird behavior, including an increased appetite, remarkable strength, and growing fangs. The brothers, particularly Alvin, grow increasingly concerned that Theodore is transforming into a werewolf. In the meantime, the Chipmunks are also busy preparing for a play, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde , which runs parallel to the current events and adds another dimension of comedy and drama to the story.

8. Little Alvin and the Mini-Munks  (2003)

Directed and produced by franchise co-owner Janice Karman,  Little Alvin and the Mini-Munks  takes the series in a new direction by depicting the Chipmunks and Chipettes as little children. This DTV release stands out from the rest of the series since it combines puppetry and animation instead of just the latter. It’s also unusual since it moves the protagonists out of their usual milieu of rock stardom and into an average home’s more grounded, everyday setting.

The “Mini-Munks” — younger versions of Alvin, Simon, Theodore, Brittany, Jeanette, and Eleanor — spend most of the film at the house of a kind human figure named La-Lu. La-Lu’s house is full of enchantment, from the talking parrot Gilda to the stuffed bear Talky Teddy.  Little Alvin and the Mini-Munks  does not have a linear plot. It is more of an anthology than a single story, with episodes focusing on topics such as sharing, facing fears, and the value of cleanliness – issues relevant to kids.
