Highlights of Sorrento,Capri and Amalfi Coast Private Tour

My group and I loved our tour package. The hotels were very nice and well-located. The rooftop views from the Naples hotel were spectacular, and we loved the spa and pool at our Sorrento hotel. Our tour guides gave us fantastic historic and current context to the areas we toured, from Naples to Pompeii to the towns of Amalfi and Capri. They were personable and very flexible to accommodate the sites we most wanted to explore.

Walking the Amalfi Coast

Very nice hike, it’s not really a walk. You need good foot wear as the hike is quite technical. Our guide Vania was fantastic and our group was a pleasure to be with. Views were amazing and the accommodation and food was very good.

My mom and I went on our first out-of-the-U.S. trip together and we had a wonderful time! Getting there was a bit rocky due to flights being cancelled, but our group and tour guide made us feel welcome immediately. I loved the walks and the views, and our tour guide Gennaro knows this whole area like the back of his hand. We couldn't have asked for a more helpful and kind guide for this trip.

The service and coordination of the trips was excellent and totally seamless. Given the nature of our tour that involved two train trips, pick and drops from railway stations, tours, hotels and ferries. Everything perfectly synced. Capri tour guide Francesco is too good. Polite, knowledgeable and no non sense professional.

Must be ready for some serious stair work. 135 just to start the day getting off the property. This is not for rookie hikers, but at the end of each day of trekking, we all felt pretty proud of our accomplishment. Tour must add/include transport back to Naples.

Enjoyed this tour. Accommodation was nice and travel voucher had most of the information needed. One thing which we were disappointed with was being referred to use the emergency number even for critical scheduling information, such as the bus time for the group included tour. This information should be relayed ahead of time to us, instead we had to actually seek it out ourselves. Thanks to Anne from Wingbuddy for helping communicate important information to us throughout the tour, much appreciated!

I took my 12 year old son on the Intrepid Family Adventure. We had an amazing time. The guide was helpful, considerate and lots of fun. Playing games with the kids in the pool and making sure everyone was comfortable and happy. The pace was fantastic for a family with the mornings full of exploring with the group and the afternoons reserved for free time for families to spend together. Our highlight was the sailing trip to Capri. Can't recommend highly enough

I was a wonderful tour. We had a guided Tour in Naples, Pompei and a wonderful hike, garnished with interessting facts about history and the people living there. The family at the lemon farm was great and the food provided was really yummy. Luigi gave us a little tour around the property andbecame my personal hero, when he demonstrated how to make limoncello. Chiara was a very helpful and lovely guide. We already miss her :-)

The tour was great. The one thing I would definitely not do, is stay at La Ninfa in Amalfi. Rude and unhelpful manager there at that hotel. La Ninfa is also up the hill quite a way, but without a very long walk or a 20 Euro cab ride you can’t get to it.

Paths of the Amalfi Coast

The location on the Amalfi Coast is fabulous, with challenging but rewarding walks, and it was great to have a single base for the whole week. I was doing self-guided as a solo. There was no visual map, only written instructions, which at times were difficult to follow. I received cursory attention from hotel staff including the head waiter who was apparently my key contact: one of the other waiters was more thoughtful. When I did ask about departing bus timetables which weren’t clear, staff were very off hand - I had to persist to find out relevant information. The room was great - I had a jacuzzi bath. Unfortunately apart from the first and last nights, meals were far below what the information indicated, and even more basic than what I’d cook at home, and I’m not a fancy cook: for example, a bowl of cos lettuce for 4 of 7 nights with a few julienned carrots on one night and no dressing does not rate as a salad. Because I was self guided and solo I was consistently seated alone for dinner. The wifi in the bedroom was hopeless - repeatedly needing to sign in within minutes - but great in the dining area. I made the most of the opportunity and location, but overall, and in comparison to some of my other experiences throughout Europe, not value for money and I’d be reluctant to recommend to others.

La Dolce Vita Experience Tour

La Dolce Vita Experience

The tour was fantastic and the hotel Michaelangelo in Sorrento was amazing. The service and meals were perfect. The only part of the tour that was disappointing was the tour in Naples . Also the initial pick up for our tour from Rome to the bigger tour bus was delayed and for over an hour 1/2 wait . We almost gave up and we would have missed a great tour . Our tour guide to Capri and Sorrento was fabulous. Capri was one of our favorite spots on our vacation.

What people love about Amalfi Coast Solo Tours

No surprises. Except Local tour official Omar was out of communication. He then said, he was attending conference. But some one else should have been available
The tour was wonderful for several reasons. Our guide, Veriano, was knowledgeable and fit right in with our group. The size of the group was perfect, ages ranging from 27 to 71 years. Everyone was fit and up for the challenge.
Overall I really enjoyed the Amalfi walking tour. Staying in a small community was a welcome change from the large city tourist experience. The accommodations were as expected, and the Agritourisimo owners were lovely hosts. I especially enjoyed the homemade pasta and desserts. The wine tasting dinner was a lot of fun and the pizza was excellent. I could not have asked for a nicer group of fellow hikers. Our guide, Peter, was very personable, attentive to everyone’s needs and abilities and was knowledgable about the region. I am a 67 year old Canadian woman in excellent health and keep physically very active. I live in a location that is predominantly flat land. I made an effort to climb hills as much as possible to train for the walk but walking on ground is not enough to prepare for all the stone steps on the walks. Stair climbing and descending would be at good training routine. I found going down the steps very hard on the knees, but they felt better after a couple of days of walking on this terrain. I would caution anyone with knee or hip joint problems about choosing this tour. A 76 year old woman in our group had no problems at all. However, after falling on the loose rock the first day, an 85-year-old man from North America was not able to participate in most of the walks. Peter was able to suggest alternate activities for him and his wife and they were still able to enjoy the trip. Anyone older should have excellent balance and be used to walking on uneven terrain and climbing up and down rocky obstacles. I think an upper limit of 85 is overly optimistic for this tour.

The complete guide to solo traveling on the amalfi coast.

The Amalfi Coast is a stretch of coastline on the southeast coast of Italy. It is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Italy and it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Complete Guide to Solo Traveling on the Amalfi Coast

What are the Best Places to Visit on the Amalfi Coast as a Solo Traveler?

The Amalfi Coast stretches for about 100 km and has some of the most beautiful landscapes in Italy. This region has many attractions, but these are the best places to visit in Amalfi Coast:

Positano - one of the most popular destinations in Amalfi Coast, it’s also one of the best places to visit in Italy. Positano is famous for its beautiful beaches and rich history. It has been a top tourist destination for many years. The best time to visit is from April to October.

Ravello - the Medieval architecture and breathtaking views of Ravello make it one of the most popular tourist destinations in Amalfi Coast. You won't need a tour guide to explore the town, as you'll know where to go just by looking at its narrow winding streets, brightly colored houses and flower-filled balconies. Ravello offers plenty of opportunities for foodies because it’s home to some Michelin-starred restaurants.

Sorrento is a must-see destination for everyone visiting the Amalfi Coast. One of the most iconic views you can see in Sorrento are those of Mount Vesuvius, with its smoke coming out of it.

Salerno - one of the biggest cities in the area, Salerno is home to some historical sites and art galleries that are worth visiting.

Amalfi Coast Best Restaurants For Solo Travelers

Da Franco e Nino is a romantic, family-run restaurant on the Amalfi Coast of Italy. Choose from homemade pasta and pizza dishes, fresh fish by the kilo, and a selection of wines from around the world. It's open daily for lunch and dinner, with an outdoor dining area overlooking the sparkling sea.

How to Travel the Amalfi Coast: A 10 Day Itinerary

The Amalfi Coast is one of those places that has fascinated me ever since I was a little girl. There is something so magical and alluring about the picturesque buildings, vast mountains, and vibrant blue water– it’s no surprise that visiting has been on my bucket list for forever. As the world began to open back up this past year, I found myself craving sunshine and serotonin. My recent road trip through the Amalfi Coast was the perfect cure and nothing short of a dream.

Hopefully, my 10- day guide will help you plan your own adventure through the Amalfi Coast!

where to get the best pizza in naples

How to travel the Amalfi Coast: An Insider’s Guide

Day 1: arrive in naples .

To get to the Amalfi Coast you really only have one airport option. The Naples International Airport is the closest airport to all of the cities on the Amalfi Coast. I would recommend spending at least one night in Naples because it truly has so much to offer, especially if you’re a food lover (like me). Naples is the birthplace of pizza, so make the most of your time there by eating your way through the city.

For a more in-depth guide to Naples’ best pizzerias, click here .

Day 2: Salerno

The world’s most scenic road trip begins right now. From Naples, take the Circumvesuviana train to Salerno. The trip is only a half an hour, so no need to worry about wasting the entire day on the road.

There are so many ways to get around the Amalfi Coast (ferries, buses, trains– you name it). I prefer a rental car because there’s nothing better than being on your own schedule. So, when you arrive in Salerno, head to Salerno Rental and get a car.

It’s no secret that the Amalfi Coast is a popular tourist destination– Salerno offers a break from the hustle and bustle with peaceful nature parks and ancient historical sights. Once you arrive, check out the Salerno Duomo Cathedral and the Villa Comunale. After you’re done exploring, grab a bite to eat and listen to live jazz music at Mariterraneo, which is located in the city’s historic center.

Follow us on Instagram for travel inspiration.

Day 3: Vietri sul Mare

And we’re back on the road! The drive from Salerno to Vietri sul Mare is just 15 minutes– again, you don’t have to worry about wasting the day traveling on this trip.

Vietri sul Mare is known for its beautiful hand-painted ceramics. Take some time to wander the streets and look at the intricate tiles. There is an entire museum dedicated to the ceramics called the Museo della Ceramica, which is definitely worth a visit.

amalfi coast solo trip

Day 4: Vietri sul Mare

I think a beach day is long overdue. Vietri sul Mare has plenty of beaches to choose from, but my favorite is La Baia because the sand is so soft. Make sure to get an early start, also– the beaches get busy quickly!

After a busy day lounging in the sun, head to Ristorante Sud Est for a wide variety of seafood, pizza, and pasta. The Gnocchi alla Sorrentina is the stuff carbohydrate dreams are made of. Trust me, you’ll thank me later!

Ravello Italy | WORLD OF WANDERLUST

Day 5: Ravello

The drive from Vietri sul Mare is to Ravello is about an hour, so get a good night’s sleep and head out early. Ravello is nestled in the mountains just above the coast and, while it’s not as busy as Positano or Amalfi, its lush gardens and seaside cliffs make this little town worth visiting.

If you’re going to do anything in Ravello, I recommend exploring Villa Cimbrone’s sprawling gardens. The villa dates back to the 11th century and is now a 5-star hotel. The terraces and lush greenery are like something out of a storybook, making for the perfect instagram backdrop to turn your friends green with envy.

Read more: The little town on the hill: Ravello is the best kept secret of the Amalfi Coast

Day 6: Amalfi

After a short 18 minute drive to Amalfi, take some time to explore the picturesque city. Visit the street vendors, cafés, and restaurants that line the main street, Ruga Nova Mercatorum, or book a boat tour so you can appreciate the coastline from every angle.

Day 7: Amalfi

Amalfi is known for its lemons, and no visit would be complete without a lemon tour. The Amalfi Lemon Experience offers tours of the Aceto family lemon farm, as well as cooking classes and wine tasting. And yes, there’s Limoncello! This wouldn’t be the Amalfi Coast without it.

Positano_Amalfi_Coast

Day 8: Positano

I have to admit, I was the most excited for Positano and I’m happy to report that it lives up to the hype. The vibrant buildings perched over the glistening water is nothing short of photogenic.  After wandering through the narrow streets and navigating the steep inclines, find a beach club and spend the afternoon soaking up the sun. I recommend Da Adolfo– a boat ferries you from the port in Positano to the beach club, which sits in between two cliffs. It’s a good idea to reserve a spot in advance– summer is the busiest time of year!

Day 9: Positano

If you don’t want to spend the last day in Positano at the beach, eating your way around the city is a great alternative. If you’re feeling fancy I recommend Zass, a farm to table Michelin-starred restaurant. Buca di Bacco is located on the main beach and offers a great selection of traditional cuisine, with the soft waves just a brief stroll away if you fancy some beach time afterwards. Oh and don’t forget to grab some lemon gelato on your way back to the hotel, this being the end of your itinerary and all.

Day 10: Sorrento to Naples

Unfortunately the last day will be spent on the road, but at least the view is incredible. The drive from Positano to Sorrento is a brief 35 minutes and from there you will take the Circumvesuviana train back to Naples. If you have time before your train leaves, you can take a walk around the historic center or grab a quick bite to eat to savour the last flavours of the Amalfi Coast.

Best Things to Do on the Amalfi Coast

By: Author Gabi Ancarola

Posted on Last updated: December 28, 2023

The incredible Amalfi Coast is one of the most beautiful destinations in the Italian Peninsula, it is a fantastic place to visit if you wish to get a close-up look at those ever-lasting Italian traditions, incredible seaside landscapes, and picturesque villages.

In this article, you will learn everything you need to know about the Amalfi Coast and its enchanting villages.

But you will also discover how to get there, how to move around, and several other important tips and secrets that will make you book your ticket right away!

In This Article:

Where is the Amalfi Coast

Locally known as Costiera Amalfitana, or simply Costiera, the Amalfi Coast is a 40-kilometers-long stretch of coastline in the Campania region of Italy on the southern end of the Sorrento Peninsula and facing the Tyrrhenian Sea.

The collection of seaside settlements is made of thirteen different villages, starting in the famous town of Positano and ending in the tiny town of Vietri Sul Mare, right before the city of Salerno.

Starting from the west part of the coast, the villages are: Positano, Praiano, Furore, Conca de’ Marini, Amalfi, Atrani, Ravello, Scala, Tramonti, Minori, Maiori, Cetara, and Vietri sul Mare.

LEARN MORE: 14-Day Itinerary Italy

Things to do Amalfi Coast, a mini guide.

How to explore the Amalfi Coast?

To start visiting the area, it is first necessary to reach the capital of the Campania region, the huge, beautiful, and – at the same time – chaotic city of Naples, right at the foothill of the Vesuvius.

The best way to go about the coastal trail is to begin from the village that’s closer to Naples. Either Sorrento or Positano are good starting points since both of them offer a wide choice of accommodation.

Although Sorrento is not part of the village of the Amalfi Coast, this coastal town deserves a visit for its picturesque atmosphere, traditional houses, and amazing sea views.

From Sorrento, you can slowly make your way to the west visiting the villages that interest you the most to end your visit in Vietri sul Mare, from where it is possible to take a train back to Naples.

Getting to the Amalfi Coast

Getting to Naples to start the Amalfi Tour visit is quite straightforward, no matter what city of Italy you’re coming from.

You can reach Naples by plane from the more distant regions in the north of the peninsula, but you can also get there by bus from Rome, (the ride lasts a bit more than 2 hours).

It’s also possible to travel to Naples from different European capitals while traveling to Rome or Milan first makes more sense if you’re visiting from a country out of Europe.

Once you’ve made it to Naples, it is easy to reach Sorrento by train and, from there get to Positano by bus or taxi.

Moving around on the Amalfi Coast

The Amalfi coast features one of the most breathtaking coastal roads in the country, narrow, winding, and resting on the edge of a steep cliff, it is not an easy road to drive.

So if you’re not an experienced driver, I suggest moving around by bus, private transport (such as a transfer or taxi), or, even better and faster, the ferry.

It is also possible to move around by bus. The Amalfi Coast Bus Service offers different ticket options, they can be valid for a 45 or 90-minute ride (€2.40 or €3.60). You can also purchase a 1-day ticket or a 3-day ticket (€7.20 or €18).

You can buy your tickets at the local tobacco shops or newsstands. Since there are no official bus stops , always ask for directions when purchasing the tickets.

Ferry travel is a good , cost and time-efficient way to move along the Costiera. It is a great way to avoid crowded buses, especially in summer, but also perfect to enjoy the magnificent views from the boat.

Bear in mind that these ferries do not stop in all of the villages, you will need to reach some of them by bus or taxi to visit.

The Amalfi Coast ferries only dock in Sorrento Positano, Amalfi, Minori, Maiori, Cetara, Salerno. Prices range from €9 to about €20 depending on the ride and distance and the tickets are often available at the port.

Best Time to Visit the Amalfi Coast

It is tempting to say that summer is the best time of the year to visit Amalfi, it is hot and pleasant and most of Italy is also on holiday.

However, and exactly for that reason, the Amalfi Coast can get extremely crowded as it is one of the most popular destinations in the country.

Besides, prices tend to double (or even triple!) during July and August.

You can choose to visit in spring and autumn for pleasant temperatures and fewer crowds, remember that the hot season in the Mediterranean is often longer, extending from May well into September.

Winter is also a good alternative for those interested in discovering the holiday traditions in the south of Italy, however, it can get very cold (sometimes it can even snow) and windy, with ferries not running as often or being canceled at the last minute.

Where to stay in Amalfi Coast Italy.

Where to Stay in the Amalfi Coast

The most convenient towns to stay in the Costiera include Positano and Sorrento. Positano is one of the most amazing villages on the coast, it is big enough to offer tons of accommodations to book, a huge range of services, and comfortable options for transport.

All these advantages do come at a high price tag though, so Sorrento may sound like a good alternative.

Sorrento is a fantastic coastal town that you should certainly visit when touring the coast. The town is bigger than the other villages without being huge, thus retaining a lot of character and charm.

Villa Dalu is a beautiful and quite affordable place to stay in the center of Positano only 50 meters from the beach. It features allergy-free rooms, a shared lounge, and a garden with sea views.

Read reviews and check prices for Villa Dalu now

Casa Sorrentina is located in the heart of Sorrento and offers convenient accommodation not far from the beach. The comfy accommodation is just off Piazza Tasso in the heart of town.

Traveling Solo on the Amalfi Coast

How is the Amalfi Coast for solo travel? The place feels quite safe as it is family-friendly and very touristy.

Of course, it is always necessary to take the usual precautions that apply for all popular and crowded destinations, especially when you are in transit at airports, stations, and the center of big cities.

Things to Do on the Amalfi Coast

Sorrento things to do.

I’ve decided to include a stop in this gorgeous town even if it is out of the traditional trail. Enjoy all these best places to see in Sorrento.

Here, you can check the gorgeous historic old town featuring beautiful winding alleys and colorful townhouses.

The most important place in town, is Piazza Tasso , Sorrento’s main square where you can take a walk to soak in the local sounds and vistas.

Also in Sorrento, it is a good idea to discover the gorgeous Villa Communale and its gardens that will enchant you with the terrific views of the whole coast as well as the imposing shape of the Vesuvius.

Positano Things to Do

The official starting point of the Amalfi Coast, there are lots of things to do in Positano.

Positano is a very touristic town made of picturesque colorful alleys. In town there are gorgeous souvenir shops, art exhibitions, artisan shops, and galleries that you will also want to check out.

Take some time to visit the beach, Spiaggia Grande (meaning Big Beach) is the most important of them, it stands at the base of Positano and it is popular both with locals and visitors.

Along the coastal area, there are fantastic pizza houses and traditional Italian restaurants that are perfect both for dinner and lunch.

A must-try? The local limoncello is a fantastic spirit made of lemon and lemon zest and one of the staple products in the region.

Of course you can go for a shot of this beverage but also try limoncello gelato, cake, and even biscuits.

Amalfi Town Things to Do

The small but enchanting town of Amalfi is a perfect place to spend a morning or even a whole day when visiting the coast.

One of the landmarks in town is located in the main square, Amalfi’s Cathedral, the ancient church of Saint Andrew was built back in 987.

It features a unique, colorful facade made of mosaics and a characteristic flock of stairs, perfect for a snapshot of the building.

If you’re also curious about the history of this town, then it is a good idea to head to Amalfi’s Paper Museum , the locally produced paper is known as bambagina , and it is considered among the top quality handcrafted paper.

Atrani Things to Do

You can reach the tiny settlement of Atrani on foot from Amalfi, it won’t take you more than 15 minutes to get there and you will enjoy the relaxing atmosphere of this fairly forgotten area.

The picturesque settlement is located between two cliffs and it is known for being the smallest town in the country.

The coast of Atrani is a beautiful area to visit featuring dozens of small and colorful houses standing on the edge of a breathtaking cliff.

Ravello Things to Do

It is easy to reach Ravello by bus from Atrani and you should certainly do so.

This small mountain settlement, a bit far from the coast, is internationally known as the City of Music , since Ravello hosts music festivals every year.

However, the best places to visit in the town are two incredible medieval villas, Villa Cimbrione and Villa Rufolo which feature spectacular gardens and impressive sea views.

Furore Beach

Although not as popular as other villages on the Amalfi coast, Furore is definitely worth a visit.

It is home to one of the most stunning views you will encounter in the whole area, the beach known as the Fjord of Furore.

This picturesque beach is a hidden shore with an incredible 30-meter high bridge over the sea.

Vietri Sul Mare Things to Do

The last and often forgotten village of Vietri Sul Mare is a delightful place to visit when exploring the Amalfi Coast.

The place is perfect to purchase local souvenirs to take home, including the famous ceramics of Vietri that feature characteristic lively and bright colors.

If this is a craft that peaks your curiosity, then check the Museum of Ceramics . It is located in a beautiful villa and the exhibit includes not just artistic ceramic decorations but also pottery thought for everyday use.

The church of Vietri , devoted to Saint John the Baptist, is a perfect example of the local crafts with its imposing bell tower and dome made of colorful local ceramics.

Visit Vietri Sul Mare especially for the colorful ceramics and the church of Vietri

Maiori and Minori

These are two quiet coastal towns that are often skipped during an Amalfi Coast itinerary but they deserve to be mentioned.

Maiori is located between Amalfi and Ravello, and it is the place where you will find the best and biggest beaches on the Amalfi Coast.

Also in Maiori, it is possible to check out an impressive Norman Tower from 1563 that stands over the main beach.

Minori , instead, is a simple little town where life goes on pretty much the same despite the tourists. It is a colorful village that has a beautiful beach.

The whole area is calm and relaxing, and the perfect destination for a few days in total solitude.

There are not many options when it comes to accommodation, but booking in advance might help you find a comfortable place for a night or two.

One of the best things to do in town is to follow the so-called Lemon Path , an ancient trail that connects both Maiori and Minori and that has some of the most gorgeous views of the entire coast.

The Lemon Path hiking trail is not winding nor steep, and it takes about an hour to hike.

Other Places to Visit Near Amalfi

Once you’re done checking the magnificent villages of the Amalfi Coast, you might want to discover more. If you have extra time, then I suggest you to consider these side day trips.

Capri Island

A day would be enough to explore the fantastic little island of Capri with its one-of-a-kind sea grottos and its international and cosmopolitan atmosphere.

There are different day trips departing from Sorrento and Naples.

Capri Island coastline.

A day trip to Capri Island is easy from Sorrento or Naples

Perfect destination for history buffs, the archaeological ruins of Pompeii (Pompei Scavi) would need several days for you to fully see them, but you can get a pretty decent picture of the history of the place if you visit on a day trip.

You can reach Pompeii by car but even faster and easier by train.

The Campania Express is a special train along the Circumvesuviana line that stops at Pompeii (The ticket is about €6 from Naples).

Why not devote some time to the most important town in the Campania?

You can join an organized tour of Naples that can easily show you the unique highlights of this vibrant city, including the historic Royal Palace, Piazza del Plebiscito, and the impressive Castel dell ’ Ovo , the most ancient fortification in town.

How far is the Amalfi coast from Florence by auto?

Susan Moore

Saturday 14th of May 2022

Bruce, It depends on the route you take from Florence to Amalfi Coast, the fastest route via A1 is about 530 km (about 5.5 hr drive) but a more scenic route partially along the Tyrrhenian Sea is about 600 km and takes about 6.5 to 7 hours without stops. Cheers, Solo Trips and Tips

4 days itinerary to Amalfi coast

Here is an easy to do four-day-itinerary for Amalfi Coast and the places around. Go to Naples, Salerno, Pompeii, Amalfi, Capri, Positano, and the nearby islands easily and for cheap!

Amalfi Coast

amalfi coast solo trip

But let’s start at the beginning.

The Amalfi Coast is a picturesque region located in the southern part of Italy, along the coastline of the Sorrentine Peninsula. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and known for its stunning beauty and cultural significance. The Coast stretches for 50 kilometres (30 miles) along the Tyrrhenian Sea, from the town of Positano in the west to Vietri sul Mare in the east. It is characterised by steep cliffs, lush greenery, and charming coastal towns. The coast gets its name from the town of Amalfi, which was a major maritime power in the Middle Ages and played a crucial role in trade and commerce in the Mediterranean. The Amalfi Coast is also famous for its terraced lemon groves . These massive lemons are used to make limoncello, a traditional Italian liqueur. Oh! And it is YUM.

If you’re planning a visit to Amalfi, keep in mind that it can get very crowded. To avoid that, the best time to go is during the fringe months of March to May, or, August to October. However, if you don’t mind the crowds and are looking for a livelier atmosphere, then you should plan your trip in the summer months of June and July. During this time, Amalfi is at its absolute best with festivals, concerts, and street markets. Just be aware that prices will be higher during these months.

Where to Go

The map below shows all the cities touched as part of this itinerary. Almost all of the trip was done cheap: staying in Airbnbs or small hotels and travelling by train. I also did the trip entirely solo.

4 Days in Amalfi Coast | Cheap and Easy | The Perfect Itinerary for Solo Travellers

Day 1: Naples > Salerno

You must have landed in Rome ? Take a train and go to Naples. Our first destination is Salerno, but we do need to tick Naples off the list. The Naples International Airport (NAP), is also the closest airport to Amalfi coast, about an hour’s drive away.

Italy’s third largest city, Naples, is situated in a breathtaking natural setting, with the iconic grey cone of Mt. Vesuvius on one side and the deep blue waters of the Golfo di Napoli on the other. Most trains from Rome stop at Naples and then move on to Salerno. I did not enjoy Naples much and would advise no more than 3-4 hours here if you are short on time overall.

Things to do

  • Stroll along Centro Storico or the Old Town
  • Stroll along Via Toledo , a 1.2 km long street that is one of the most important shopping districts in the city
  • Visit the Cathedral of Naples, a medieval cathedral featuring the remains of an Early Christian basilica, several famous artworks, and the miraculous blood of San Gennaro
  • Eat a Napoli pizza at Via Tribunali or a Margherita at L’antica Pizzeria da Michele (of Eat, Pray, Love fame)
  • Eat a  sfogliatell a at Sfogliatella Mary

Here’s a  48 hours in Naples  itinerary, if you plan to spend longer.

Having ticked Naples off your list, let’s now move on to the more interesting portion of the trip.

Salerno is a city located in the Campania region of southern Italy . In the 9th century, Salerno was home to one of the most renowned medical schools in Europe, the Schola Medica Salernitana , where scholars and physicians from different cultures converged to exchange knowledge. During the Middle Ages, the city became an important maritime centre and was ruled by Lombards and Normans, contributing to its economic and political significance in the region. Salerno played a crucial role during World War II as the site of the Allied landings in Operation Avalanche in September 1943. Overall, the city’s strategic location on the Tyrrhenian Sea has historically made it a significant port for trade and maritime activities.

Why Salerno and not Sorrento

It was a debate in my mind to stay in Sorrento or Salerno, but after loads of research, I decided Salerno it was. For primary reasons:

  • It is cheaper
  • It is connected to Rome by a direct train (at least this was the case when I went)
  • It has frequent ferries to all the Amalfi islands and Capri (routes are active April-October)
  • It has a beautiful promenade and church
  • It is underrated and thus, has a lower number of tourists
  • Did I mention it was cheaper?

If you still want to make Sorrento your base, read how to plan here .

What to See

  • Duomo di Salerno  or the Salerno Cathedral is beautiful and majestic. Built in the 11 th century, it is dedicated to Saint Matthew. Free entry. Visiting hours here .
  • Gardens of Minerva: Salerno is home to the oldest botanic garden in Europe, known as the Gardens of Minerva, which was founded in the 14th century.
  • Lungomare di Salerno or Salerno’s beautiful promenade which, on a sunny day, is a great place to relax, the Italian way. Along the promenade are piazzas with gorgeous fountains and statues. Or you could go to the Salerno harbour to check out the busy port
  • See the spectacular view of Salerno from Arechi Castle . Take bus 19 up the hill from the city and buy the return ticket beforehand at the tabacchi (local tobacco shop/grocer). Entrance is €3 (adults). Castle timings are 9 a.m. – 5 p.m (Closed on Mondays). Buses to and fro are 2 or more hours apart, so do this if you have time to spare. You can also take a cab up.
  • Check out the ruins of Paestum , which is an hour away by train
  • Salerno Artistic Lights: Every year, Salerno hosts an event called “Luci d’Artista” (Artistic Lights), where the city is adorned with illuminated art installations, attracting tourists and locals alike.

Where to Stay

Salerno Centro. Look no further.

Actually, I made this cute little B&B my stop for all 4 days. But I recommend staying at Capri or Ravello/ Positano at least for one night to see the beachfront light up and not feel pressed to return.

How to Reach

I traveled from Roma Termini to Salerno on an overnight “ Espresso” train, which proved to be safe and convenient, albeit quite basic. However, it’s worth noting that trains with names like “Regionale,” “Diretto,” and “Espresso” are designed to stop at every small town with a train station, making them slower than the regular trains. If you’re looking for a faster option, consider using Trenitalia or ITALO. See your options here .

Now you’ve completed the Naples and Salerno part of the 4 Days in Amalfi Coast tour. Let’s move on to Pompeii.

Day 2: Pompeii

4 Days in Amalfi Coast | Cheap and Easy | The Perfect Itinerary for Solo Travellers | Naples, Pompeii, Salerno, Amalfi and the islands | A Pompeii itinerary

Pompeii used to be one of the most important cities in the Roman Empire and a popular place for Romans to live in, both rich and poor. But what ultimately gave the town its eternal allure is DEATH. In the summer of AD 79, the city of Pompeii was almost completely buried under lapilli (rock fragments formed by lava spray) caused by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius which killed many of the residents. You can still see casts of people killed within the ancient site, which is gory, to say the least.

Why should you go to Pompeii? Well, because, read this:

24th August, Hottest day of the month in 79 AD In a few seconds, all the Gods will hurl themselves down, together with Hermes of the powerful, bronze candlesticks, busts of the emperor, statues of the Lares, images of the Penates (Household Gods). At the end of Via Dell’Abbondanza near the fountain, men and women were rushing around confusedly gesticulating and shouting as they stared at Vesuvius. The summit had disappeared as if swallowed by the earth, and in its place rose an enormous tongue of fire. The mountain had gone mad.

Dramatic, isn’t it? Don’t you want to see what it is all about?

Pompeii was rediscovered in the 18th century, revealing a remarkably well-preserved glimpse into Roman civilisation. Pompeii is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, attracting millions of visitors annually. Its ruins provide invaluable insights into ancient urban planning, customs, and architecture. The plaster casts of human and animal remains left behind by the eruption evoke the tragic human toll of the catastrophic event, making Pompeii an unparalleled archaeological treasure. A must visit.

A combined ticket for Pompeii, Herculaneum, Oplontis, and Boscoreale costs  €22.00 for an adult and is valid for one entry to each site over a period of three consecutive days (and free on first Sunday of the month, if you can time it). Along with the ticket, you also get a free map and a guidebook. I have to tell you though, the place is overwhelming in its grandeur and you might want to take an actual human guide  with you (available at the entrance) to see it better. Take a tour, like this one .

Timings : From 1st April to 31st October the site is open 9.00 – 7.30 p.m. (with last entrance at 6 p.m.). Other times, the site closes at 5 p.m. with last entry at 3:30 p.m.

Some trivia: Pompeii’s source of prosperity was Garum , or fish sauce. Made from rotted, fermented fish guts, Pompeii served the demands of the entire Roman empire. So, you can imagine the money made.

But really, more fascinating to me was seeing the vestiges of the practice of the oldest tradition in the world— the brothels at Pompeii. Tiny rooms with stone beds and lewd pictures on the walls to function as a ‘service menu’. Quite fascinating. Read more on the brothels or Lupanar (Wolf Den) at Pompeii.

Pompeii brothel Campania itinerary

The walk back from Pompeii Scavi to Stazione was quite painful with the sun on my face and not less than three men following me at different times, stopping by to say something in Italian and gesturing to sit with them in their car/bike. But the day ended well, back in Salerno, where I had my first taste of Limoncello , which—what can I say—is probably one of the best drinks I’ve ever had. Tad sweet sometimes, but the tangy vodka gives such a head rush. That and some nice sandwiches at Macondo close to Piazza Portanova.

Mucho Buono!

Come back to Salerno.

If you can’t and would prefer to be at Pompeii, stay at Hotel Forum . Great value for money and right next to the ruins. Nights start at USD 70.

Trains run from Salerno to La Stazione di Pompei from which Pompeii Scavi or the ruins is a 20-minute walk. No need to buy tickets in advance. Buy at the station.

We are through with the Naples, Salerno, and Pompeii parts of the 4 day Amalfi Coast Trip. The more picturesque bits are coming up.

Day 3: Capri

“There is no spot in the world with such delightful possibilities of repose as this little isle” Charles Dickens in Capri.

Capri is an island in the Tyrrhenian Sea, off the Sorrentine Peninsula in Italy. It attracts visitors for its natural beauty, Mediterranean climate, and picturesque landscapes. Notable landmarks in Capri include the Blue Grotto and Villa Jovis. Capri has long been a favourite destination for artists, writers, and intellectuals. The island has been mentioned in literature and mythology. It offers stunning views, hiking opportunities, and a spirited social scene.

Anacapri is a town on the island of Capri , located at a higher elevation than the main town. It is known for its scenic views and historical sites, such as Villa San Michele and the Church of San Michele. To go from Capri to Anacapri, visitors can take a public bus, taxi, or walk along a scenic path called Via Migliera . The journey offers stunning vistas of the surrounding landscapes. Many tourists choose to visit Anacapri to explore its tranquil atmosphere, cultural attractions, and escape the crowds of the more bustling Capri town.

I will reiterate – Capri is drop-dead beautiful! Narrow lanes open onto surprising expanses; a deluge of flowers flank cobbled pathways; a pristine white Duomo hovers over surrounded by hordes of designer stores, high-end spas, granita corners, and ensconced in them, Roman remains. I could spend days in its many bars and cafés, sipping sweet limoncello and spying on the holidaying glitterati walking past me.

“The grapevine on the rocks, the cracks in the musk, the walls that ensnare the clinging plants, the plinth of flowers and stone: the island is the lyre that was placed on the melodious height and chord by chord played by lights since remote times its voice.” Pablo Neruda.

amalfi coast solo trip

On the other hand, Anacapri is a pristine, white Christian-ess. It boasts Moorish settings, surrounded by olive groves, vineyards, and garden terraces overlooking the Mediterranean. It’s an island of idleness, perfect for taking leisurely walks on the curvy white paved roads. The roads are full of flowers and offer jaw-dropping views of the sea. I had my first taste of Italian Lasagna Bolognese here. Some delicious pizza too.

From Salerno’s Molo Manfredi dock , take the morning ferry to Capri Islands (if it’s summertime and they are running, else take the SITABUS ). The journey from Molo Manfredi dock to Capri takes about 2 hours over picturesque waters. It costs ~18 Euros one way (at the time of writing this). The ferry also stops at Amalfi Town and Positano. The trip along the coast is dotted with delightful little islands, colourful houses perched on top in layers within the mountains.

Traveling to Capri by waterways is the best and most enjoyable way to reach the island. However, there is one drawback to this mode of transportation: the last ferry to return from Capri departs at 4:30 p.m. As someone who has been to Capri, I can attest that this is an incredibly short amount of time to spend on the island. After the ferry drops you at Marina Grande , buy another EUR 2 bus ticket to go to  Capri.  You can also take a funicular or walk to reach Capri. Here is a link to know how to get around in Capri .

Capri to Anacapri is 1 hour of walking uphill. Or you can take a bus that takes 15 minutes and costs EUR 2 one way.

While returning from Anacapri , take the Phoenician steps (922 steps, begins at Axel Munthe’s Villa-Villa San Michele) down to Marina Grande. The views en route are quite spectacular. Takes 30-45 minutes but to be done only if you are fit enough. The steps are very steep.

4 Days in Amalfi Coast | Cheap and Easy | The Perfect Itinerary for Solo Travellers | Naples, Pompeii, Salerno, Amalfi and the islands | Lasagna Bolognese

Staying in Capri is expensive, because of which I returned to Salerno. Overnight stay is USD 100 +. If you can spend, I wholly recommend doing an overnight stay. To Be Capri and Apollo B&B are reasonably priced options.

And now to the crowning jewels of the 4 day Amalfi Coast Trip.

Day 4: Amalfi coast

Stretching for 50 kilometres along the southern edge of Italy’s Campania region, the Amalfi Coast is a rugged coastline that beckons hikers and nature enthusiasts. The coast is traversed by the Strada Statale 163, a scenic coastal road known as the Amalfi Drive , that offers breathtaking views of the coastline. The Amalfi Coast is a popular destination for visitors from around the world who come to soak in its natural beauty, enjoy its coastal lifestyle, and explore its historical sites. About only 5000 people live in the Amalfi coast!

4 Days in Amalfi Coast | Cheap and Easy | The Perfect Itinerary for Solo Travellers | Naples, Pompeii, Salerno, Amalfi and the islands| | travel itinerary for Amalfi coast

The coast is made up of the following towns.

Amalfi is crowded and touristy. There are lots of knick-knacks to buy and a lovely town square with a towering church to see. But do not spend much time here, unless your goal is to people-watch.

4 Days in Amalfi Coast | Cheap and Easy | The Perfect Itinerary for Solo Travellers | Naples, Pompeii, Salerno, Amalfi and the islands | Amalfi festivities

The rest— Praiano, Minori, Maiori —are quieter towns. Inhabited mostly by residents; the kinds who would not lose an opportunity to sun themselves and their kids out on a fine day. A good place to laze, sip coffee, read a book and watch the world on a sunny day. By the way, Maiori features the longest beach of the Amalfi coast.

amalfi coast solo trip

Driving from the West, Positano is the first town you’ll come across on the Amalfi Coast. After Amalfi, it is the next best-known stop along the coast. It is a postcard-perfect beach town, but also expensive. Spend a few hours sipping limoncello at Ristorante da Costantino .

But my favourite town was Ravello —quaint, tiny, oozing with old world charm, with a lovely town centre, a gorgeous church, and plentiful bistros. It is situated about 5 km uphill from Amalfi. The Villa Rufolo and Villa Cimbrone offer some great panoramic views of the Amalfi coast. In Ravello, I took close to a hundred snaps in several different angles and positions in a vain attempt to capture the absolute drop-dead beauty of the place. Failed, failed, failed . Surrounded by such absolute beauty and plentiful limoncello, I might have never left. The ferry though…

You can do a guided walking tour in Ravello.

Oh! Even as you are reading this and planning to go, I envy you.

amalfi coast solo trip

The nights can be quite magical, with the flickering lights on the coast, a vast expanse of sparkling black sea and yachts dotting the far skyline. Stay at Ravello or Positano. Details at the end of the blog.

Take a ferry from Salerno to Amalfi (if they are running, else take the SITABUS ). Once you reach Amalfi, take the hop-on-hop-off bus to take you to the island of your choosing. I especially loved the music they played on the bus. The bus starts from Sorrento but stops on all the Amalfi islands.

For train tickets:  Venere  and  Trenitalia  to book.  Seat 61  for general information on trains in Italy

Random tip: I paid close to 16 Euros to get from the Rome’s Fiumicino Airport to Termini through the Leonardo Express which though convenient was expensive. Take the Terravision Bus for about 4-6 Euros. They have fixed timings and shuttles close at ~11 p.m.

Your hotel options

Make Salerno Centro your base for the four days. Central and the best! You can do everything on my list and return to your cosy corner each night. Try it.

You can also consider staying overnight in Ravello or Positano. In Ravello, recommended hotel is Villa San Michele . Spectacular views.

If stopping in Pompeii, choose Hotel Forum .

If staying in Capri, choose To Be Capri or Apollo B&B .

What a wonderful post and shots! The Amalfi Coast is truly a natural amphitheater of rocks, scents and sensations, an oasis of peace flowing with a very intense social life. On the Amalfi Coast, the delights of a land that smells of sea, lemons, woods and mountains, go along with a long history, that of peoples and nations who have left the sign of their passage. A place to fell in love with, as I did! I liked it so much that I decided to write about its beauty, scents, tastes and stories in That's Amalfi! http://www.thatsamalfi.com

Oh how I love Italy!! What a great guide to exploring many new parts. Naples is one of my fave places, the food is just incredible!

I love this part of Italy! After reading your post, I’m aching to go back! I’ll have to check out Ravello the next time I find myself there.

Yes! Ravello is the absolute best.

A SOLO ROAD TRIP IN THE MARVELLOUS AND ROMANTIC AMALFI COAST

amalfi coast solo trip

Amalfi Coast had long been in my Bucket List. You have surely seen the iconic pictures of Positano (above in the picture) and the breathtaking landscapes of the curvilinear roads on cliffs with marvelous sea view which characterize this Coast, also know as the Road of the Gods . Its natural beauty and diversity, as well as exceptional places with a very relevant cultural and architectural significance was recognized by UNESCO and since 1997 it is classified as World Heritage.

4 years ago I started enjoying Solo travelling at it has become a need at least once a year. Previously I had put off some destinations, because I thought it would be more suitable for a romantic landscape with our soulmate. However, October arrived, I wanted a destination by the sea, somewhere I still had not visited in Italy and I thought to myself: Why not Amalfi Coast? Romantic destination and so what? I can still have a blast on my own. Result: I booked a flight to Naples and here I was on my way! There were 2 events in my life which marked me profoundly and since then I have never stopped travelling (even more frequently than what I already did) – surviving a terrorist attack in Brussels (working 200m away from Maelbeek) and losing a pillar in my life . Since then, it does not matter if it a short break, Summer holidays or a long weekend, I never miss a chance of exploring the world and surely not having a boyfriend or a company for that particular trip will never put me off! Of course I love travelling with my family and best friends, but since I started Solo travelling, I always need at least once a year to go somewhere on the planet on my own and I promise you it will be of the most amazing experiences you will ever have – do not be afraid to be bold, do not be afraid to go to the unknown, however as a solo woman traveler trust your instincts, be cautious, do not put yourself in dangerous situations and be responsible – as I wrote in a previous post about Rio, if something does not seem right to you or you are uncomfortable about it, do not risk it!   That means when I travel alone, I always go to safe destinations, stay in central areas, when needed go on guided tours and I do not walk alone during the night. It has been 4 years and so far I met great people, had amazing experiences and keep looking forward to the next solo trip!

Let’s get back to the Amalfi Coast – So I did a solo Road Trip in late October, which is one of the best seasons to go, prices are moderate, fewer crowds, empty roads and still gorgeous weather, from Naples to Amalfi, stopping at Ravello (my recommendation – it is the place with the most breathtaking panorama in the Amalfi Coast) , Positano and a boat tour to Capri, which I will describe in great detail for you with my usual fancy recommendations. Note: I always stayed in the same hotel in Amalfi, because visiting cities within the Amalfi Coast can be done on a day trip. I recommend staying in Amalfi because you have easier connections by car, bus, boat and for car rentals, many more parking spaces or even hotels with parking garages which do not charge a fortune.

Day One – Napoli – Amalfi I flew to Napoli/Naples (it is the closest airport to the Amalfi Coast) and rented a car at the airport. I opted for an automatic car in Europcar and it was the best decision ever – no matter how beautiful the Road of the Gods may be, sometimes it will cause you cold sweats. Why?

  • Very narrow roads so that sometimes 2 cars cannot go through at the same time
  • Impatient drivers
  • Curves, curves and more curves
  • Crazy motorbike drivers taking over.

When on the motorway, even though I had the GPS activated, you will not get lost as Costiera Amalfitana (SS 163)  is pretty well indicated. After around 1h00/1h30 min (total distance 60 km) on the dreamy iconic roads on the cliffs, I arrived at my hotel  – Bellevue Suite 3* and stayed at an incredible double room with seaview. The hotel has a private parking, which in the Amalfi Coast can be challenging and I recommend as a particular feature to look at when you rent a car – in most cases, it is non existent or like in Amalfi, you end up paying 5€/hour. The Bellevue Suite is a family-run hotel. Rooms are very nicely decorated in navy blue and in my case a room with seaview, the balcony is quite large, enabling you to enjoy a fabulous view. Breakfast has great options, including freshly squeezed bitter orange juice and a typical product of the region – Mozzarela di Buffala Campana .  Antonio, the son of the owner,  was extremely kind to me, sharing some insider tipps on what to do in the Amalfi Coast, where to eat and explaining a bit of his family business.

Sunset in Amalfi

Day Two – Amalfi After having a wonderful breakfast, I started exploring Amalfi. Main sights:

  • Amalfi Cathedral ( Duomo )
  • Beautiful narrow streets
  • Promenade along the sea

amalfi coast solo trip

Duomo di Amalfi – Amalfi Cathedral

What to buy:

  • Fresh lemons from Sorrento
  • Olive oil with lemon
  • Hand-crafted pasta
  • Lemon dessert with lemon sorbet

Restaurants:

  • Al Cancelleto

I followed Antonio’s recommendation and visited his friends place in the old town of Amalfi at Piazza dei Dogi (on the paralled streets of this piazza there are beautiful souvenir shops). It is run by a lovely young couple. His father is a fisherman, therefore everything you eat here will be amazing and straight from the ocean!  I ate here 2 nights, from a simple and very tasteful pasta with lemon to anchovies and beautiful freshly made pasta with seafood and grilled seabass with grilled vegetables. A hidden gem in Amalfi , please take note of it! Do not need to thank me, enjoy an amazing meal in Amalfi like I did.

Amalfi specialities:

  • Fresh pasta with lemon (I never though such a simple dish could be so amazing, but given the quality of Sorrento lemons and how incredibly juicy they are, it is one of my preferred dishes. Simplicity is sometimes the best.)
  • Fresh pasta with seafood
  • Grilled fish with vegetables
  • Mozzarella di Buffala Campana with San Marzano tomatoes and basilicum
  • Lemon freshly squeezed juice (incredibly acidic, incredibly fresh)

Day Three – Positano On my day three I decided to visit the iconic Positano . You can either go by car, by bus or by boat. Since parking in Positano is extremely limited, even more than in Amalfi, I would recommend you going by bus or by boat. From Amalfi you have great and regular connections to almost everywhere in the Amalfi Coast. I went by bus, it was almost one hour. I admire Amalfi Coast drivers, how experienced they are to drive us safely in such a unique and sometimes dangerous road. When I arrived in Positano I was welcomed by lovely sunny weather 25C in late October – what else could I have asked for? I decided to explore Positano, see its picturesque architecture and beauty and had an amazing lunch on a cliff.

Positano in another perspective

Top tips from the Fancy Explorer:

  • Buy Positano sandals – You have surely seen the beautiful leather Positano sandals. Go to Positano with time and buy handmade ones for as low as €50 (given the handwork and leather quality). The shoemaker measures your foot and you pick the design. It was great watching him craving the design on leather sole with so much care and pride. I opted for a blue traditional design and still today are my favourite sandals. I bought at La Botteguccia .
  • Buy beautiful tunicas and dresses . One common style was with lemons and flashy colours, which I thought it was a good match for a holiday look.
  • Drink fresh squeezed Lemon juice at one of the terraces on the hilly part of Positano. It is quite much €7 for a natural juice, but I will guarantee it will pay off
  • Stroll around the beach – Positano Spiaggia and have lunch there. I picked randomly a restaurant and ate incredibly well – anchovies and fresh pasta with lemon.

Day Four – Capri A highlight in my trip included a boat tour to the famous cosmopolitan island of Capri . I departed from Amalfi and took me around 2h30 to arrive there. During this boat tour, the guide showed us the secret location of Sophia Loren’s villa – I did not even know she owned a house here and it looked incredible.  Capri island is divided into 2 – Capri and Anacapri. The best way to explore is indeed by scooter, however there are touristic buses operating on both sides. Unfortunately by the time I was there one of the main attractions –  Blue Grotto (Blue Cave) was closed, however I could stroll around for some hours in the beautiful streets and one of the major photo spots – an iconic window on Capri’s main square overlooking the island. Honestly, even though Capri is worth visiting to me it was not fascinating. I found extremely overpriced in terms of food and accommodation (even in late October). For example, a normal dish of fresh pasta with seafood you would not find below €40. Personally, I found Positano much more picturesque. What to do/visit in Capri:

  • Visit Blue Grotto
  • Stroll around the beaches
  • Capri Main Square

  • Trails around the island
  • Enjoy a wonderful sunset!

Day Five – Ravello On my last day I decided to visit Ravello, since it was not very far from Amalfi (around 10 km). I decided to go by bus, because the roads looked very scary to me (curves and curves on the hills). Ravello was an amazing surprise and until today I still think you have the most beautiful iconic breaktaking panorama from this city.

What to do in Ravello:

  • Strolling around the center and its beaches
  • Duomo di Ravello (Cathedral)
  • Villa Ruffolo – historic and cultural center of Ravello with incredible gardens and an astonishing panorama. Ravello is also a City of Music and during the Summer, the Ravello Summer Festival in honour of Richard Wagner  takes place at this incredible villa.
  • Villa Cimbrone – one of the most luxurious and prestige hotels in the Amalfi Coast with incredible gardens
  • Take as many pictures as you can

On the following day I drove until Napoli airport, arrived a little earlier and since my flight departed only at 18:00, I decided to eat a real pizza napolitana . Da Michele had a very long queue,  so I tried one of the oldest and authentic pizzerias in Napoli – Trianon There were large tables and you sit together with other visitors, like in a living room style. I chose a simple Margherita with San Marzano tomatoes, basilicum and mozzarella di bufala Campana. Until today I have never tasted such an incredible pizza!

It was a very beautiful Autumn Shortbreak and so far one of my favourite Road Trips. During this time of the year there were tourists from all around the world, literally from the US to New Zealand, so as a solo traveler you would never feel alone. Amalfi Coast is indeed a very romantic destination and once I would like to go back there with my soulmate. However, it was a very enjoyable visit and I could recharge all my batteries! Conclusion: If you have always dreamt of visiting a marvelous romantic destination, do not put off until you find Mr. Right, adventure yourself and go! Remember: some places are meant to be visited more than once in a lifetime and Amalfi Coast is no exception 😉 So what did you think of this tour? Let me know your thoughts!

P.S. I am preparing a surprise for you, so stay tuned for further news! See you fancy travelers!

Solo Amafli Coast for single travellers in Italy

The solo traveller's guide to Amalfi and Pompeii

Italy for singles? It's even better than you imagined

To show you why you should consider exploring the impossibly pretty coastline independently, we’ve teamed up with Andante Travels to bring you the ultimate solo escape to Italy , which is exclusive to Good Housekeeping readers.

With boat rides, lush gardens and even glamorous islands to get to know in a group of like-minded readers, this is this solo tour to end all solo tours! Here's why you should try Amalfi on a solo holiday.

Fascinating history

There's plenty for single travellers to get up to in this part of Italy, thanks to its rich and fascinating history. On a solo tour you’ll be kept busy exploring the wondrous ancient towns of Pompeii and Herculaneum. You’ll also have the chance to visit the amphitheatre at Pozzuoli - one of the largest in the ancient world, and the natural thermal spring bath complex at Baia.

Solo traveller Amalfi holiday

Pompeii was buried under ash for many years, after the eruption of Mt Vesuvius in 79AD. The Roman town beneath the ash has been miraculously preserved, so you can walk around its houses, shops and bars, and imagine it bustling with locals.

Even better preserved is the town of Herculaneum, and there are now two on-site museums with gift shops, so you can bring back a souvenir of your solo adventure for your loved ones. The National Archaeological Museum in Naples is a perfect spot for an afternoon to yourself as you peruse lovely frescoes and mosaics. These were discovered in old Vesuvian towns and give you a real picture of life back then.

Memorable sea views

If the culture and history doesn’t keep you busy on this fun sightseeing holiday, the coastal landscapes will. You’ll have plenty of peaceful time to yourself to admire aquamarine waters off the Amalfi Coast, the majestic cliffs that rise above the ocean and the creative manicured gardens of Ravello at verdant Villa Rufolo.

amalfi coast, campania, italy

Travelling in a friendly group, you’ll also be able to get some memorable holiday snaps of yourself in this beautiful coastal region.

TAKE ME THERE

A highlight of the trip is a boat ride to the island of Capri, a classy hotspot that has attracted the likes of Brigitte Bardot and Tom Cruise. Be sure to look out for the faraglione, grand rock arches, that jut out from the sparkling water. One of these rocks is home to a unique species of blue lizard.

The perfect pizza

Not only will you have plenty of time to wander the old streets of Naples at your own tempo, you’ll also get to sample the world’s best pizza - a napolitana straight from Naples. On a solo trip, you can have one all to yourself, as well as tuck into some local delicacies - including ricotta pastries, spaghetti alle vongole, pizza frita and finger-licking-good frittata - at a group dinner.

Close up view of a Margherita Neapolitan style pizza with buffalo mozzarella, tomato sauce and basil.

Lunch is included every day on the tour so you don't have to worry about wandering around finding a spot to eat. It will also give you the chance to try fresh seafood, hundreds of pasta formations and fragrant limoncello while bonding with fellow travellers, perhaps over a glass of wine from the Campania region.

Like the sound of all this? Now’s your chance to book a spot on a life-changing trip to the Amalfi Coast, where you're sure to make new friends along the way. You'll be able to enjoy one of the most beautiful places on Earth and save the pennies with us as we don’t penalise solo travellers - there’s no single supplement to pay! BOOK NOW

Exploring Infinite Views & Unique Tastes Walking on the Amalfi Coast

King Siu

October 4, 2023 by King Siu

View of Positano while walking the Amalfi Coast

Just when I thought I knew everything about the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D., I learned something new during my Walking the Amalfi Coast tour with Exodus Travels .

When Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79 A.D., I had no idea that any cities were affected other than Pompeii. I now realize this was silly as it wasn’t the only town in the area. So, you can imagine how uneducated and uncultured I felt when I discovered that there was another city that was frozen in time after the eruption.

Herculaneum was actually discovered in 1709, before Pompeii (1748), but due to the mainly carbonized pyroclastic material that covered Herculaneum, it was much harder to excavate. Pompeii was mostly covered in volcanic ash, which is much easier to extract. The advantage of the pyroclastic material over Herculaneum was that some organic material was preserved such as wooden roofs, beds, and doors, as well as food and papyrus. You’ll see some examples of this during your visit.

I see now why some who have visited both prefer Herculaneum. It’s a more manageable size, as Pompeii is enormous, and the city is better preserved. I think you should see both, if possible, but you can’t go wrong with either if you only have time for one.

Let’s Make Pizza!

Readers of my last article, Italy’s Spectacular Amalfi Coast Solo on a Group Walking Tour , already know that I love food, and one of my favorites is pizza! Hotel Due Torri has a master pizza maker on staff, who also happens to be the co-owner. Not unlike the previous cooking demonstration, I knew we were in for a good time.

In spite of my best efforts to remain an observer, I was volunteered to become the pizza apprentice in this demonstration. You can rate my pizza making skills in this Instagram video .

Many may see the pizza making process as simply throwing some dough in the air, covering it with ingredients, and then baking. But, when you’re a master using a traditional wood-fired oven, you have to be up at dawn to prepare the fire, the dough, and the toppings, then care for the fire throughout the day to ensure it is always at the optimal temperature, all while standing next to the intense heat of the oven, even when the weather is sweltering. This dedication is what allows his customers to enjoy some of the most delicious pizza they will ever eat. Pizza was invented in this region of Italy and it shows in every savory slice.

The Terrace of Infinity is a beautiful viewpoint while walking the Amalfi Coast

Glimpsing Infinity While Walking the Amalfi Coast

Ravello is one of the many towns along the Amalfi Coast that you’re likely to visit and if you do, I highly recommend swinging by the Villa Cimbrone. A private five-star hotel also sits on the property should you be so moved by its beauty that you don’t want to leave. The gardens are open to the public, for a small admission fee (which was €10 during my visit), and the star of the spectacular gardens is the Terrace of Infinity or the Terrazza dell’Infinito. From there you get limitless views of the cliffs and seaside.

Say Cheese!

Cheese is a big part of Italian cuisine, and one of the most important cheeses in the Amalfi Coast is Fior di Latte. It is essentially a cow’s milk mozzarella, as they are also made with buffalo milk in this area, and is what you will commonly find on pizzas.

A local cheesemaker was gracious enough to invite us to view how Fior di Latte is traditionally made, and to let us sample some of the artisanal cheeses that he produces for many of the surrounding businesses and beyond.

King takes a selfie from the Path of the Gods while walking the Amalfi Coast

The Path of the Gods

When you return from a trip to the Amalfi Coast you will inevitably be asked if you walked the Path of the Gods (Sentiero degli Dei), so naturally, I was happy to see that our tour included that walk. Located high above the coastal towns of Positano and Praiano, this path is approximately 5 miles (8 km) long, and is possibly one of the most beautiful walks in the world.

Anyone looking to make this hike should make sure to pack water and other important hiking supplies, as well as sensible shoes to tackle mountainous terrain. I saw way too many people walking the path with no water and even some with flip flops. I prayed for each of them as they passed. If you’re lucky, you may even encounter some mules walking along the trail as they are still used to transport things through the mountains. As some parts of the trail are really narrow, I recommend letting any mules or people you encounter pass you on the outside, if they must walk by you, to limit the chance that they might accidentally nudge you off the cliff.

During the walk, you will see jaw-dropping views over the Positano and Sorrento peninsula, and you will surely understand what prompted 19th century politician and mountaineer Giustino Fortunato to describe this hike as the Path of the Gods.

After trekking to the end of the Path of the Gods, we continued our way down to Positano via the tiny villages speckled along the cliffs. I had no idea that the town of Positano is an almost vertical town that’s clinging to the rock face. Visitors should be prepared for lots of undulating and narrow roads and alleyways. Fans of luxury women’s fashion will rejoice at the endless shops to cater to your addiction. The cost of everything in Positano also seemed to be double the price of everywhere else on the Amalfi Coast, with the exception of perhaps Capri, so keep that in mind if you’re on a budget.

By the time we’d gotten to Positano we had walked almost 11 miles (17.7 km) according to my step counter, so I was very happy to find out that we would be taking a cruise back to the town of Amalfi to catch a bus that would take us home. It was also a perfect opportunity to see the beautiful Amalfi Coast from the water and take in the sheer majesty of its soaring cliffs and mountains.

Would You Like Some Limoncello?

Walking the Amalfi Coast can cause one to work up quite a thirst. I think we found the most trusting Limoncello retailer on the planet in the village of Bomerano, as after being seated at some tables outside of the L'Alambicco Limoncello boutique for a tasting, we were given four large bottles of Limoncello, glasses for everyone, and told to just go nuts, as our host excused himself to tend to some customers in the boutique.

It was then that our knowledgeable Exodus guide stepped in to take the reins to guide the suddenly leaderless Limoncello party.

I haven’t had much of this delightful liquid over the years, but anyone who likes lemons should definitely not miss out. I also had no idea that there were so many different variations of it. I was introduced to a Crema Limoncello that could have gotten addictive. It’s Limoncello with dairy in it, which I found did a great job of balancing its natural acidity. I did purchase a bottle of this, foolishly thinking that I’d be enjoying it when I got home to Canada. That bottle of Crema Limoncello never even saw the sun rise the next morning.

Even Walking the Amalfi Coast Must Come to an End

Every solo traveler will have to say goodbye to people at some point during their adventures. Sometimes you don’t really care, but sometimes it just tears you up inside. With tours it’s particularly difficult because your tourmates have become your friends, almost an extended family during your trip, but the upside is that you now have some new friends who are just as adventurous as you, and with technology it's never been easier to stay in touch.

A huge thank you as well to our incredible local guide Teresa Romagnuolo for taking such good care of us, and for teaching and showing us all the wonders in this beautifully magical part of Italy.

5 to 7  Days in Paradise – The best Amalfi Coast Itinerary

Amalfi coast itinerary: day 1 – sorrento.

Most likely, you will be coming from Napoli or Rome, so Sorrento is a good place to start. It is bigger than the rest of the towns on the Amalfi coast, so you have more options as far as hotels, restaurants, and other services, but it still retains its small-coastal town charm.  It is also easy to reach by train, bus, car or ferry, and it could be a perfect home base to see the rest of the Amalfi Coast, Pompei, and Capri.

Beautiful Amalfi Coast Towns and Villages - Sorrento

What to see here? Stroll by the Villa Comunale , a beautiful park on a terrace overlooking the sea and gorgeous Sorrento Bay. There is usually someone playing a violin or harp- could it get any more romantic? Go for a dip at the beach- the water is all sorts of different blues!

Walk through the adorable little and lively streets where you can taste limoncello in its birthplace and take some unique photography at the Vallone dei Mulini , a 200-year-old abandoned mill set in a mysterious-looking valley close to the main square. End the day with some delicious pizza or seafood pasta. Unlike some other towns on the Amalfi coast, Sorrento always has nightlife. Stay downtown if you like some action, or just outside the center for quieter.

🍕 Get a true taste for southern Italy on a gastronomic tour from Sorrento , where you can learn how to make Neapolitan pizza.

amalfi coast solo trip

If you decide to base yourself in Sorrento, here are some great hotel options: Grand Hotel Ambasciatori : The Grand offers 5-star luxury with all the features that guests would expect of a hotel of that standard including a private beach. It provides stunning views over the Bay of Naples as well as Mount Vesuvius. Click here for more information and to check the latest prices. Hotel Belair : With sea views from every room in the hotel, Belair looking out on to the Bay of Naples is a genuine experience. Spa, restaurant, bar, and pool, everything is there for the comfort of its guests. Click here for more information and to check the latest prices.

Amalfi Coast itinerary: Day 2 – Positano and Path of the Gods

Sorrento is beautiful, but now get ready for more dramatic views as the cliffs get higher and the colors get more intense. Take a bus from Sorrento (or drive, if you are confident in driving on windy roads) and start your second day with a beautiful hike on the Path of the Gods .

Ready to hit the hiking heights of the Amalfi Coast?

It is 5 miles long, starting in Agerola, but of course, you can choose to walk it for any length. It is an easy path- starting from Agerola you will be going down the whole time, and there are benches along the way – and good even for children and older ones.

Many legends surround this beautiful road, which was believed to be threaded by Greek divinities. The views are spectacular, as you are surrounded by green and overlooking the transparent sea. Near the Vallone Porto, not far from the end, you will also see a waterfall and a canyon.

Bring some water and comfortable shoes, and in about 4 hours (including rest) you will reach the end of the trail which is in Nocelle, where you can walk down 500 steps and find yourself right in Positano (at least it’s downhill, right?).

amalfi coast solo trip

Positano is small and can be seen in just over an hour, but it is considered the highlight of the Amalfi coast. The setting is simply magical, the way the town is vertically built on the precipice, the way the colorful homes and churches are framed by blooming flowers, and of course the water surrounding it all. By hiking in the morning and arriving in Positano in the afternoon you get to relax in this stunning setting and can enjoy the sunset here.

Relaxing Full-Day Cruise Trip Along the Amalfi Coast   enjoy a relaxing cruise along the Amalfi Coast, spend free time exploring Positano and Amalfi, and get into the water at 4 different snorkeling and swimming stops

Amalfi Coast itinerary: Day 3 – Amalfi and Ravello

On the 3rd day, continue exploring the Amalfi coast by seeing 2 of the main towns: Amalfi and Ravello. Amalfi is the biggest town on the coast, easy to walk (it is mostly flat!), and with beach access. The main square flaunts a beautiful cathedral, the Duomo di Amalfi, built in 987 with mosaics in the typical Amalfi colors – yellow and green. Inside the cathedral, there is the Chiostro del Paradiso , which features Moorish architecture and gardens.

There are many boat tours offered in the summer to see the coast from the sea- which is breathtaking- and most allow you to jump in the water.

Beautiful Amalfi Coast Towns and Villages - Amalfi

Of course, if you want to visit the town of Amalfi, sit at a restaurant for lunch and spend an afternoon on the beach/boat, you can add a day to the itinerary and see Ravello on the 4 th day.

If you want to get an overlook, or you are not going in the summer, you can see each town in half a day. Ravello has two main landmarks: Villa Rufolo and Palazzo Cimbrione, two medieval palaces and gardens with Arabic architecture.

Ravello sits higher on the mountain so the view from both of these villas are stunning and you can see two different sides of the bay. The gardens are beautiful, and the setting is almost unreal.

amalfi coast solo trip

Amalfi Coast itinerary: Day 4 – Pompei

At this point of the trip, we have mostly seen amazing views, beaches, cliffs and cute towns. Pompei is a nice change of pace as it is a huge historical site where you can spend a day completely thrown in a different era. I love history, but always thought Pompei would not actually be “aesthetically” appealing, being a bunch of ruins left from a volcano eruption over 2000 years ago.

At least that is what online pictures show. However, what you can’t understand from the internet, is the size of this place.

amalfi coast solo trip

It is a real and proper CITY, so walking along its well-preserved streets, passing every home, temple, villa, and shop is like time traveling, being completely immersed in this ancient world, imagining what their life (and their death) was like.

Usually modern and historical coexist in many cities, but Pompei is unique in that the whole city has been left untouched. A tour guide is recommended to get extra interesting gems you could not get otherwise. Take a train from Sorrento (the Campania Express is a quick and comfortable one) and you will be left right in front of the entrance.

amalfi coast solo trip

There will be queues in Pompeii so booking in advance allows you to get in quickly and not waste your time otherwise be there as soon as the archaeological site opens.

Here are a few options that I recommend:

If you want just to skip the line and see the archaeological site on your own I suggest that you buy a fast-track entrance ticket . If you would like to do a guided tour and also skip the lines I suggest this 2 hour skip the line guided tour . If you are looking for an organised skip the line guided tour starting from Sorrento I suggest this full-day guided tour that combines a visit to the Pompeii ruins and the mount Vesuvious .

No matter how you choose to visit the site, know that it is very busy especially through May to October. Bring a hat and a sunscreen, wear comfortable shoes and drink plenty of water.

Amalfi Coast itinerary: Day 5 – Capri

They say to save the best for last right? That is why Capri is number 5 on this list. If you see it first, nothing might impress you after it. Easily reached by ferry from Sorento, Napoli, Positano and Amalfi, Capri is a luxurious little island with some of the best views in the world.

On arriving to Capri, you can take a boat tour to get an overview of the island and visit its majestic grottos with incredible light effects (such as the Blue or the Emerald grottos ). The tours are about 15-20 euros per person, but if you are traveling in a group (up to 8)

I recommend taking a private boat tour on one of the typical old Capri boats, for about 100 euros per boat (if you have 4 or more people you pay the same or less than the commercial tours and you are not with another 30 people).

Faraglioni Cliffs - Things to do in Capri

Once you are back on land, there is a beautiful little rocky beach with some of the most beautiful and transparent waters in Italy. From the harbor, take the cable car to the actual town. It is full of fancy boutiques, stunning hotels, and romantic restaurants competing for the best views.

What you must not miss, are the Giardini Di Augusto , splendid manicured gardens -made by Roman emperor Augusto on top of the island-which boast the best views of the Faraglioni (two giant rock formations in the middle of the sea)  and of the Via Krupp , an amazing ancient path with many steps leading to the bluest waters of Capri. Do not miss this!

amalfi coast solo trip

You can go to Capri on your own by ferry or with a guided tour from Sorrento .

Amalfi Coast itinerary: Day 6 & 7 Furore, Vietri and Ischia

More Amalfi coast: Other unique sights in the Amalfi coast include Furore , with its amazing 30 meters high bridge over the water; Grotta dello Smeraldo , a beautiful grotto with stalactites which can be toured in the summer from Conca dei Marini; Bagnidella Regina Giovanna , a natural sea pool with crystal clear water amidst Roman ruins; and  Vietri , the town of ceramics, colorful and lively.

amalfi coast solo trip

Ischia : Less known and cheaper than Capri, but much larger and more historical, Ischia is a beautiful island famous for its natural thermal waters. Also reached by ferry, you can easily spend two days in Ischia.

☀️ Visit small islands of Procida and Ischia during a day trip full of activities . Lunch and beverages, snorkeling equipment, pickup and drop-off from designated meeting points are included.

One day you could visit the Castello Aragonese , a beautiful ancient castle built 400 years B.C. which is on its own little island. It is truly stunning and inside you can visit the old gardens with wine and olive oil presses, orange and lemon trees everywhere, and the ancient cemetery.

After visiting the castle (which takes a couple hours) head to the area called Sant’Angelo, a charming neighborhood full of shops and restaurants, a beautiful beach, and a breathtaking cliff attached by a small stretch of land.

On the second day in Ischia, enjoy the thermal baths and all their wonderful health benefits. Negombo is wonderful thermal park, or for the more adventurous types, you can search around the island for some of the open natural hot thermal pools.

When is the best time to visit the Amalfi Coast ?

Spring : April and May are the best months to visit the Amalfi Coast since they offer warm and sunny weather as well as the chance to admire the blooms. Easter Week shall be avoided because it’s a traditional vacation time for Italians and all the main tourist destinations get very crowded.

Summer : June and September are the best months to enjoy a beach holiday on the Amalfi Coast since you’ll surely find fewer tourists than in July and August and hotel fares will be lower too.

Best period to go sightseeing : May

Best period for your beach holiday : June

How to get around the Amalfi Coast

Pros: you’ll be free to move at your own pace and stop anywhere you want for a break or to take some pictures along the famous scenic coastal drive.

Cons: the scenic drive is full of bends, so it’s not so pleasant for people suffering from motion sickness! Traffic jams are also very common in summer and parking space is scarce and expensive.

  • By bus : Sita Company offers frequent rides along the entire Coast and tickets are really cheap (16 euro for 3 days). Have a look at timetables and stops here https://www.positano.com/en/bus-schedule

Pros: frequent rides and cheap fares

Cons: traffic jams in summer and crowded buses

  • By train : you can catch a train to reach Sorrento both from Naples or Salerno, but you cannot reach other towns.

Pros: it’s a good solution if you’re planning a longer stay in Sorrento

Cons: you cannot reach any other town

  • By ferry : several ferry companies operate between April and October, while only Capri island is served by ferries in winter. Booking is really easy and you just have to go to the local marina and ask for information and you’ll immediately find a ride available, especially in summer. If you prefer to directly contact a Company try Travelmar, SNAV, Capitan Morgan or Alilauro.

Pros: no traffic jams and a beautiful view

Cons: it’s more expensive than taking a train or a bus (from 9 to 12 euro per ride)

Best way to move around : take the ferry to move from one town to another to enjoy a beautiful view and immerse yourself in the local atmosphere of each marina.

What to taste on the Amalfi Coast

  • Spaghetti with anchovy sauce: anchovy sauce is a local specialty typical of Cetara
  • Scialatielli all’Amalfitana: local pasta shape with seafood, tomatoes and capers
  • Gnocchi alla Sorrentina: gnocchi (potato dumplings) seasoned with tomato sauce, mozzarella and fresh basil
  • Ndunderi: ricotta dumplings seasoned with a sauce similar to Bolognese (ground beef and tomatoes)
  • Limoncello: a typical liquor made with local lemons
  • Caprese cake: a soft chocolate and almond cake
  • Delizie al limone: a sort of lemon profiteroles with some Limoncello custard
  • Pizza: the traditional Neapolitan pizza is everywhere!

What to pack for your vacation to Italy.

I hope you found this Amalfi Coast itinerary useful. Please let me know if you have any questions.

I really enjoyed reading the Almafi coast itineraries. We are thinking of going the last weeks of June. I wonder whether it is crowded, need to book hotels in advance, or should we rent a car etc. I don’t know if you can help us? Thank you!

Thanks for your comment. I suggest that you book in advance. If you are comfortable driving you can rent a car to explore. Mind that the roads are narrow and curvy or you get around by bus or boat.

Hi, Thanks for all the information on the beautiful sites to see on the Amalfi Coast, it’ll help me a lot to plan my trip.

My Complete Guide to the Amalfi Coast

Hi, I'm Monica

After ten weeks of traveling , we settled in for a long stay at my favorite spot in Italy : the Amalfi Coast.  The landscape of zig-zagging cliffs dropping into the sea stretches from the Gulf of Naples to the Gulf of Salerno. Even after days of sailing along the coastline it seems like a mythical place – so it’s not surprising to learn that the fabled Sirens of the Odyssey sang here, on a set of rocky islands just off the coast of Positano.

Visiting in August, we found ourselves among a crush of vacationers, both foreign and Italian. While we wouldn’t take back a day of our stay, we would plan a return trip for September – when the sea is still warm from summer and the vacationers are slowly clearing out for the season.

Any time of year, you’ll find that getting to the Amalfi Coast takes a bit more time and planning than other destinations. Depending where you’re coming from, fly or take a train into Naples. From there, I recommend booking a private car and driver for the hour-long journey to Positano – it’s possible to take a series of buses and/or ferries instead, but after an already-long day of travel with your luggage in tow, it’s worth the €100 in my book. Plus, your driver will make a stop or two for photos as you take in that captivating landscape for the first time.

We chose this colourful town as our base for the trip, like many travelers do. Its central location, enchanting atmosphere, and great restaurants make it well worth the prices. If you’re looking for a less expensive town with a more local feel, try nearby Praiano. You could also spend a few nights in Capri or Ravello to really soak in each place. Wherever you stay, try to pack lightly. Between all the great shopping you’ll find and all the stairs you’ll climb, it’s worth the effort to whittle down what’s in your suitcase .

While you could rent a scooter or ride the public buses from town to town during your stay, being based in Positano means easy access to the summer ferry boats that run all along the coast each day. Even when a ferry gets full, the ride is still beautiful, relaxing, and cheap. And I’d much rather be relaxing with a cool breeze than navigating all those hairpin turns.

In Positano, it’s hard to find any particular place that doesn’t have a pretty view of colorful houses stacked up the cliffside, down to the tiled duomo and the sea below. Our wonderful vacation rental,  Casa Gabi , had the sort of view no one would ever be ready to leave. Click here to read my full guide to Positano including favorite beaches, restaurants, and aperitivo spots.

Sorrento makes an incredible first impression, with the city built up to the very edge of the cliffs that drop sharply into the harbour. While it’s probably the first town you’ll see on the Amalfi Coast, most visitors just pass through on their way to Positano or Capri. Instead, make the time for a day trip here, catching the 40-minute ferry from Positano (your boat might stop in Capri along the way). If you want to spend four or five hours exploring Pompeii, it’s just a 30-minute train ride from the center of Sorrento.

A bit more modern and metropolitain than the other towns on this list, Sorrento has plenty to see and eat that you won’t find elsewhere along the coast. Make your way into the main town square, Piazza Tasso, and spend a while people watching from a cafe. When you’re ready to move on, wander the maze of narrow back streets in Old Sorrento, where you’ll stumble upon all kinds of restaurants, private homes, artisans’ shops, and luxury hotels. And don’t skip the street food – from limoncello gelato to Queen’s Chips (yes, fries in Italy!), it’s not to be missed. After exploring the city for a couple hours, I was surprised to turn around and see this abandoned mill than I had saved on Pinterest years before.

Evening in Sorrento has its own sort of magic, with incredible sunset views and no shortage of wine bars and restaurants. My choice would be the Grand Hotel Excelsior Vittoria ‘s vine-covered champagne bar La Pergola , followed by dinner at Ristorante Donna Sofia (named for Sofia Loren) – or maybe just a cone of fries from Queen’s Chips . Because the ferry boats don’t run at night, plan to take a taxi for the 25-minute ride back to Positano.

amalfi coast solo trip

From Positano, catch a 45-minute ferry out to this stylish island – and don’t worry about the long commute, because the views along the way are stunning. After watching the colorful vintage cars scooting around the harbor, make your way up to Capri town and promptly buy a lemon granita from the stand in the square (you won’t regret it). Catch an open-air taxi up to Anacapri, and take the Monte Solaro chairlift   to the top of the mountain   for fantastic views over the island and the Sorrento peninsula. In the afternoon, take a gozzo boat tour around the island, or lounge Slim Aarons-style at La Fontelina Beach Club . For more to do, see, and eat on the island of Capri, read my travel guide here .

amalfi coast solo trip

The namesake of the Amalfi Coastline, this city was once a bustling maritime republic and home to a celebrated paper-making industry. Today it thrives on tourism, and being a 30-minute ferry ride from Positano makes it a perfect day trip.

Amalfi can quickly feel more crowded than its neighboring towns, as everyone is funneled into the the main square, Piazza del Duomo. Admire the striped cathedral and its magnificent bronze doors (though Siena ‘s duomo is still my favorite), then weave your way into the quieter back streets to wander for a while. Stop for a famous lemon-cream cake ( delizie al limone) at   Pasticceria Panza , and honor Amalfi’s tradition of handcrafted papers with a visit to the stationery shop La Scuderia del Duca .

When you need a break from the crowds, walk the footpath over to the neighboring fishing village Atrani. From the handful of pastel buildings to the umbrella-lined beach, it covers less than .08 miles, making it the smallest community in Italy. Between its size and its picturesque appeal, it’s a perfect candidate for a postage stamp – and the perfect spot for a long, late lunch at A’ Pranza .

amalfi coast solo trip

Perched high above the Amalfi coastline,  Ravello is incredibly romantic. After a 30-minute ferry ride from Positano to Amalfi, catch a bus or taxi to reach this hilltop town. It has the charm and beauty of other coastal towns, but with breathtaking views at every turn and far less tourists. Add in the Italian castles-turned-luxury-hotels, and it’s little wonder that this place was the setting for several famous 20th century affairs. Even if you’re not on a honeymoon, a day trip here is a must. Find my guide to Ravello’s castle gardens and delicious food right here .

Solo Female Travel Tips: Positano, Italy

August 12, 2017 By Somto Ugwueze 17 Comments

How To Experience Positano, Italy as a Female Solo Traveler

As I stood at the top of a hill opposite Positano’s iconic cliffside, I felt like I was in a dream. I thought to myself, ‘This has to be the most beautiful place I’ve ever seen in my life!’ Colorful bungalows and villas were perched on the cliff, stacked upon one another in an asymmetrical fashion. The houses cascaded down to the base of the cliff, a pebble stone beach. There is a saying that when people from the Amalfi Coast go to heaven, they will not notice any difference. I don’t remember where I heard that, but my experience driving to Positano and exploring its hilly landscape makes me believe it 100%. Positano’s ethereal beauty and maze-like landscape make it the perfect place for a solo female traveler to wander for a few days. Here’s what you can expect on a solo trip to Positano.

Picturesque view of Positano, jewel of the Amalfi Coast

The drive to the Amalfi Coast will take your breath away!

The drive to the Amalfi Coast alone is enough of a reason to make a trip down to Positano. Seriously, it is out of this world. Getting to Positano, though, is kind of a long process – a 5-hour bus ride to be exact. I caught a 7:00 am Marozzi bus from Rome Tiburtina Station. It is the only direct route to Positano. The other options would be to go through Naples or Salerno – more on that in a bit.

Although it felt like an eternity, the bus ride was actually really pleasant. The first route was Rome to Sorrento. On the way, we passed Pompeii, Mount Vesuvius, and the absolutely jaw-dropping Bay of Naples. [Tip: sit on the right of the bus! I wish I had] Then in Sorrento, the bus driver asked all those who were Positano-bound to switch to a smaller bus. That’s when the real adventure began! The following two hours consisted of traversing winding, narrow roads high up in the mountains. This is definitely not for the faint of heart! It was a two-way road, and there were large buses coming from the other side. This meant our bus driver had to stop, reverse, and move closer to the cliff to make way for the other bus. There was simply not enough space on the road for both buses to pass at the same time.

How to travel to Positano

There are three main ways to get to Positano. Let me break it down for you.

Directly from Rome – this was the option I chose. It is also the cheapest option. A two-way bus ticket to and from Positano cost about $55. I purchased my tickets ahead of time on the website of the bus company , Marozzi. Then I stayed in a hostel in Rome within walking distance to the Tiburtina Station, where the bus departs. The departure time was 7:00 am, but the bus didn’t arrive until around 7:30 am.

Naples to Sorrento to Positano – From the Naples airport, you can take a direct shuttle to Positano for $100. I’m sure you don’t want to spend that so the other option is to take the Circumvenssia train (this is the regional train in southern Italy) to Sorrento. Then from Sorrento, you can take the local SITA bus or the ferry directly to Positano.

Salerno to Positano – the national train system, Trenitalia, goes to Salerno, which is about an hour and a half from Positano by car. From the Salerno train station, you can take the SITA bus to Amalfi. In Amalfi, you’ll transfer to another SITA bus that goes to Positano. You can also go to the port of Salerno and take a ferry directly to Positano.

Where to Stay in Positano

When I arrived in Positano, I spotted my hostel, Hostel Brikette, right away. It was just a few yards up the street from the bus station and is also the only hostel in town. It cost about 50 euros per night, which is expensive for a hostel but super cheap for Positano. This town is a ritzy vacation spot for the wealthy so hotels range from $300-$4,000 per night during the summer. If you don’t want to stay in a hostel, there are a few boutique hotels that are also affordable, such as Casa Albertina, Hotel Savoia, and Hotel Villa Gabrisa – prices at these locations range between $200-$300 per night depending on the season.

View of my hostel in Positano from my hostel

What to do in Positano

There isn’t actually much to do in Positano but lounge on the beach and admire the scenery. There are also some great Italian restaurants in the town – Chez Black is a favorite. You will have to shell out some money for food and drinks because almost all the restaurants are upscale. Positano is a fantastic place for shopping so make sure you leave room in your luggage. The town is known for its quality leather goods! I found some affordable ones too – around the 20-50 euro range. I learned that there are some hiking trails in the area, but I’m not a hiker (going up and down the cliff side was enough of a workout for me!)

Lovely flowers against the hilly landscape of Positano

One of my main reasons for going to Positano was just to take photos of the gorgeous landscape. I spent a lot of time walking around trying to find different angles. My pursuit of the perfect angle led me to the location I mentioned at the beginning, which I believe is the best vantage point to take photos of the town. You see, it took me a good minute to find that place. I had seen it in lots of photos and wanted to get my own shot. On my first day, I took a 10-minute flight of stairs to the beach and then walked around the town. I just couldn’t figure out where it was. Then the second day, I randomly decided to walk up a hilly street and, voila, I found it! You have no idea how overjoyed I was to find that elusive view!

Although its expensive and hard to get to, Positano is my favorite place in Italy (well so far after two trips.) My escape to Positano was the ultimate dream getaway. Very few places have my breath away as much as it did. Positano and the Amalfi Coast should absolutely be on your bucket list!

I will be spending 10 days on the Amalfi Coast for my honeymoon next summer. (6 nights in Positano and 4 nights in Amalfi) How far in advance do I need to make restaurant reservations? Where is the best place/best way to make reservations? Thanks so much!

' src=

April 26, 2018 at 3:55 am

Congratulations! The Amalfi Coast is the perfect honeymoon destination. For Chez Black in Positano you can make a reservation the day before or even the morning of. I’d do at least a day in advance to be safe. Da Gabrisa is another good restaurant. It’s not as busy, but I’d still make a reservation the day before. You can usually make a reservation through your hotel – just tell the concierge. If the restaurant has a website, you can make one there too. Hope that helps!

I will be going in August and cannot wait! Did you feel safe as a solo traveler roaming around at night?

August 30, 2018 at 9:47 pm

Hi Chelsea,

I felt completely safe in Positano at night. I can’t think of any reason for concern. Positano is secluded and most people there are wealthy vacationers.

Hi! I am actually terrified of heights but think Marozzi bus route would be perfect for me. Is it really that bad????

May 28, 2019 at 5:39 pm

I’m afraid of heights, too. but the Marozzi bus route was perfectly fine. I was more afraid of the twists and turns in the narrow roads. Still, the views are gorgeous, and the narrow roads are only a fraction of the whole drive. I wouldn’t worry about it!

I’m going in July with my parents and this post got me excited! I plan to do some things alone, what did you do at night? Did you meet any other people, if so, how?

May 28, 2019 at 5:41 pm

I met other travelers at my hostel and we went exploring the town together. Wanted to do a trip to Ravello with the group but didn’t have enough time. At night, I just went out for dinner. Positano isn’t really the place for nightlife.

Hello, I am planning a solo trip there and wanted to know if you experienced the nightlife at all (i.e. cocktail bars, clubs, etc) if so, what were your thoughts? Also, I know it is an expensive town, were you able to find affordable meal options?

July 17, 2020 at 8:33 pm

Hi MB, I didn’t take part in the nightlife, but I was able to find affordable meal options by simply using Yelp. There are also local grocery stores that carry affordable meals.

Group travel experience

The Amalfi Coast is a very beautiful place to visit; it has gorgeous locations, and the local food is delicious. Traveling between Sorrento, Positano, Amalfi, and Capri is very easy. It's worth staying at least 5 days. I arrived from Naples by bus, and it was a good option; everything is very safe.

amalfi coast solo trip

We spent a week on the Amalfi Coast and visited Sorrento, Naples, Capri, and took a boat trip along the coast to reach the small towns. It was beautiful, but I wouldn't go there again. There are so many people. Driving along the coast was, let's say, a challenge. The roads themselves weren't that bad, but the traffic was a nightmare. It was not possible to stop in any of the towns along the way because there simply were no available parking spaces. If you're going to this area in summer (we were there at the end of August), do yourself a favor and take a boat trip to see the towns.

Solo travel experience

I was on the Amalfi Coast and felt super safe there. Really friendly people and also a small place, you can walk around it and it's incredibly beautiful. I highly recommend visiting this place.

I stayed in 2 hotels in Sorrento, and from there I took a train trip to Pompeii, a boat trip to Capri and a one-day (bus) trip to Positano. Sorrento is a beautiful small town with plenty of restaurants and shops.

I spent a week on the Amalfi Coast last year. We set up base in Sorrento because it was much cheaper and we only did day trips to Capri/Amalfi/Positano/Ravello/Pompeii/Vesuvius Volcano etc! Restaurants etc. are also much cheaper in Sorrento than in Positano.

I stayed in Sorrento and simply used the bus to get to Positano. (Initially I booked a ferry, but it was cancelled). Sorrento was much cheaper, but it's a charming town with many markets and places to eat. You can also swim there. In Sorrento, there is also a railway station.

I was in the Amalfi area, including Positano, at the end of September, beginning of October. It was very crowded there. I spent two weeks there; it rained the first week so the ferries weren't running, which caused a lot of tension during my trips from Amalfi to both Salerno and Sorrento and traveling to Amalfi. The buses were full and often did not stop at most stops because they were already overloaded. I lived in Vietri sul Mare, so I didn't need to use the bus. As soon as the sun came out, the ferry service was resumed, which made my travels fantastic. I really liked Positano, Ravello and Cetara.

I went to Positano in March and it was wonderful, there were no crowds, the weather was great. It was my first solo trip and I lack words to describe the happiness that the Amalfi Coast gave me. I was going up and down the stairs, there were a lot of them and I was very satisfied, the most beautiful views I have ever seen. I stayed at an airbnb with an amazing terrace. The best trip of my life.

To do: My unforgettable activities list: - I was taking pictures of colorful houses in Positano - I ate lemon sorbet in Amalfi - I spent relaxing time on the beach in Positano - I took part in a cruise around Capri - I went shopping for beautiful ceramics in Positano Safety: I traveled alone and I felt completely safe. Accommodation: I stayed in Sorrento and I would say it's the best place to stay if you want to visit other Amalfi towns. Recommendations: Take part in a cruise and sail along the Amalfi coast.

Travel plan: This is my 5-day travel plan - Day 1: arrival in Sorrento - Day 2: Capri - Day 3: Atrani and Amalfi - Day 4: Positano - Day 5: Sorrento Safety: I felt very safe Accommodation: I stayed in Positano when I was on the Amalfi coast. It's a beautiful town with a beach, hiking trails, and really good connections with other towns. Recommendations: When exploring the Amalfi coast, choose Sorrento as your base. It has the most transport options for traveling around the Amalfi coast.

Why Amalfi Coast is the Best Destination for Solo Female Travel

  • February 21, 2022
  • italy , solo , travel , wanderer , wanderlust

If you have been itching for some poetic place to travel solo, visit the Amalfi Coast located on the southern border of Italy. The Amalfi Coast clasping hands with the Tyrrhenian Sea, is a beautiful coastal town to travel solo in Italy. It is a refreshing place for travellers who have been at some point drained of breaching the historical and architectural wonders of  Italy .

Are you ready to travel solo to the Amalfi Coast? It is very simple to explore the Amalfi Coast. Having visited the five key coastal villages of the Amalfi Coast and tasting their lemon drink, I have covered the Amalfi Coast of Italy.

Amalfi – an escape from the city

Saying Amalfi Coast is a picturesque place to solo travel is a way more oversimplifying statement. Amalfi Coast is a den of the natural world. The steep vertical houses, dishevelled paths, lined up ferries, blue at every sight, green at every wink, and lemon in every breath best define the beautiful Amalfi Coast, Italy.

Why is Amalfi the best place to visit?

Like I said in the beginning, perhaps there are many reasons why you should solo travel to the Amalfi Coast. The most satisfying reason is it is the  safest destination  to solo travel for women and an all–in–one tourist destination in Italy. Jotting them down,

  • Places like cathedrals, villas, and towers depict the historic beauty.
  • Have a relaxing time in their colourful gardens with photogenic backgrounds and Belvedere terrace.
  • Amalfi has the best Italian cuisine. Fresh and tasty fish foods are at hand.
  • Take scenic ferry rides and boat excursions to the nearest village.
  • Go for an adventurous cruise ride to the island of Capri.
  • Hiking is double fun in the slumbering town of Amalfi.
  • Watch the picturesque natural beauty while riding a Vespa.
  • Indulge in water activities like scuba diving, snorkelling, swimming, cliff climbing, and so much more.

Amalfi Coast

amalfi coast solo trip

Solo travel to the Amalfi Coast is incomplete without visiting the village of Amalfi. The village of Amalfi is rightly positioned below Mount Cerrito. That said, you wouldn’t want to miss hiking in Mount Cerrito on your visit to Amalfi.

The other tourist locations in Amalfi are the Amalfi  Cathedral   and the Museum of Paper. The Amalfi Cathedral is a medieval landmark in Amalfi. So, the interesting part is climbing the 62 stairs to finally enter the door of the cathedral.

Next to China, the Amalfi region is notable for the invention of handmade paper called Bambagina. So, the museum of paper, which dates back to ancient, is eagerly looked up by travellers in Italy. Don’t miss out on the museum of paper on your solo travel to Amalfi.

Coastal villages of Amalfi Coast

Besides the central attraction in the village of Amalfi Coast, there are five other coastal villages nearby the Amalfi Coast to travel solo. The towns are,

  • Minori & Maiori

Positano is the first town in the Amalfi coat. It is notorious for its steep structure and houses painted in yellow, pink, and grey. Grande and Fornillo are the beachy areas—you wouldn’t miss drying your skin off in Positano. The isle of La Gilli is another location to visit in Positano. Myth has it that the isle was once the host of sirens.

amalfi coast solo trip

On your solo travel to Ravello on the Amalfi Coast, visit Villa Ruffalo and Villa Cimbrone (terrace of infinity). Both the  historic villas  have gorgeous belvedere, shades of flowers, and a magnetic viewpoint—a place to please your eyes with the colours of the world. Notable mention to the Ravello cathedral and the UNESCO recognized auditorium by Oscar Niemeyer.

Sorrento is a calm not so crowded neighbourhood on the Amalfi Coast. This local town has  amazing Italian foods  and cheap accommodation facilities. While you are in Sorrento, you must visit the chiostro di San Francesco, an alluringly standing medieval cloister, Piazzo Tasso, a bar overlooking the sea, and the Bagni Regina Giovanna, one of the pleasing locations on the coast.

Atrani is the smallest village on the Amalfi Coast, famously known as the fish village. Besides the Atrani beaches decorated with pebbles and black soil, the sanctuary of Santa Maria del bando, Vicoli, Scale e archi are the top attractions in Atrani. Since you are in Atrani, spend some pennies to fill your stomach with fish eateries. Fish meals are delicious here.

Minori & Maiori

Minori and Maiori are tiny towns on the Amalfi Coast intersecting with each other. A place packed with busy travellers and beach clubs. The Minori Cathedral, Villa Marittima Romana, and the hamlet of Torre are notable destinations in Minori. The walk between Minori and Maiori is the ‘path of lemons,’ nothing much but lemon groves and a stunning view of the Amalfi Coast. Belvedere della Mortella located beneath the hamlet of Torre, is a beautiful terrace to take pictures of.

Vespa Touring in Amalfi Coast

amalfi coast solo trip

Now that I have listed the places to visit on the Amalfi Coast on your solo travel, the rising question is how to travel to these nearby villages. My choice is renting a Vespa. Almost nothing is cooler than travelling in Vespa on the coastline overlooking the cobalt blue sea while being harshly brushed by the wind. If you are ready for a Vespa ride in Amalfi, click here to know how to rent a Vespa in Italy .

Must-visit places in Amalfi Coast

Grotta dello smeraldo.

Grotta dello Smeraldo (The cave of Emerald) is a must-visit place on solo travel to the Amalfi Coast. The cave located in Conca dei Marini is accessible to visitors with an entry fee of 5 euros every day. This naturally formed cave is immersed in the sea. When the sunlight enters the water body through the holes in a cave, the water lights up to an emerald colour, spreading the effect of calmness.

Grotto Azzurro

Grotto Azzurro (the cave of blue) located in Capri is another spot of magic. Even under the parching sun, if you enter the cave of blue, it is drop-dead dark above and salient blue at the bottom. On your entire trip inside out the cave, you would be probably wondering if you really swam through the water or a glass with blue reflections. A wondrous spot worth 15 euros.

Hiking in Amalfi Coast

Hiking is one of the inevitably and incredibly pleasurable things to do on the Amalfi Coast on your solo travel in Italy. Capturing the natural world of Amalfi is achieved through this adventurous activity of hiking. While there are many spots to go hiking on the Amalfi peninsula, I like to talk about a must-visit hiking spot in Amalfi called the Path of God.

The Path of God

The path of God is a rewarding hiking trail on the Amalfi Coast. The trail covering a total of 7.6 km starts from Bomerano village of Agerola and ends in Positano. It takes about 5 hours to complete the trekking.

amalfi coast solo trip

Other  go-to spots for hiking  on the Amalfi Coast on your solo travel are,

  • Punta Campanella in Termini (4 km) (takes 2 hrs)
  • Santa maria del castello in Positano (4 kms) (takes 3 hrs)
  • Valle dei mulini in Positano (6.1 km) (takes 4 hrs)
  • Monte Molare in Agerola (12.2 km) (takes 7 hrs)
  • Monte Canino in Agerola ( 5.1 km) (takes 2.5 hrs)
  • Tre Calli in Bomerano (9.9 km) (takes 6 hrs)
  • Ring of Mount Faito in Capri (8.5 km) (takes 5 hrs)

Where can I take photos on the Amalfi Coast?

Travel goes unfulfilled without taking photos and, of course, uploading them on social media platforms (i.e., especially if you call yourself an influencer). With that in mind, let me tell you the stunning landmark areas of the Amalfi Coast you must have pictures of.

Faraglioni rocks

Probably this is the picture that comes online when you surf the Amalfi Coast—the deep blue sea with three rock formations. It is the ideal picture of the Amalfi Coast, and I don’t want you to skip it. I recommend you to take two pictures in this spot. One is at a distance when the three rock formations are visible. Then, get ready to take a picture when the boat goes under the rock formation with a cave kind of entry.

Fiordo di Furore

Fiordo di Furore is a remarkable place to take a picture—a light beach, trapping two mountains in it. The two mountains connected by a bridge open into a narrow passage is Fiordo di Furore.

With mountains and towns on the cliffs making the Amalfi coastal region, a panoramic view of the wondrous towns of Amalfi from the land level is a wanted one. Positano is the right place to go for this shot.

Lemon Orchards

Amalfi coast for solo travel

Lemon orchards are significant landmarks of the Amalfi Coast. A picture of you in a lemon orchard or simply a picture of lemon orchards with countless largely blossomed lemons will be a memory to take back home.

Ferry view shot of Amalfi Coast

Taking pictures of the Amalfi Coast from the ferry ride comes out with unspeakable beauties of Amalfi to your followers. You can have your own postcard picture of the Amalfi Coast and make it viral!

Day trips from Amalfi Coast

The bay of Naples distances the Amalfi Coast from the city of Naples . Naples, Pompeii, and Herculaneum are a viewable distance from the Amalfi Coast. So, you can visit these places while you  travel solo  to Amalfi Coast.

How to reach Amalfi Coast

Italy’s Amalfi Coast is located along a peninsula in Salerno province. Naples lies closest to it. You can reach the Amalfi Coast by flight, car, train, ferry, and bus. However, a flight journey is a must to reach Amalfi.

Once you land at Naples International Airport, you can either  take a ferry  or train to reach Sorrento, one of the closest villages to Amalfi. From there you can either take a bus or a ferry to reach Amalfi. Or else, you can also check for a direct cruise from Naples to Amalfi to  save your money  and travel time.

Where to stay on Amalfi Coast

There are two places tailored to have a good night’s sleep on the Amalfi Coast. They are Atrani and Sorrento. Atrani and Sorrento are relatively inexpensive compared to the other coastal towns in Amalfi. On my solo travel to Amalfi Coast, I first stayed in Sorrento, covering Sorrento, Positano, and Ravello. I then stayed in Atrani, covering the Amalfi, Atrani, Minori, and Maori villages.

I stayed in Florida hotels and hostels in Sorrento and L’Argine Fiorito in Atrani. While the former is a 100% cheap resort, the latter is a bit expensive traditional building turned hotel in Atrani.

For inexpensive lodging, you can check out my blog post on  24 Affordable Hostels/Airbnbs for Solo Travellers on Amalfi Coast .

Best time to travel Amalfi Coast

amalfi coast solo trip

Other than the winters from November to March, you can solo travel to the Amalfi Coast anytime. April and May are when the sun is at its peak, and the time lemons of Amalfi elevate their face. June to August is not burning sun but still hot weather. So far, it is the time crowded with travellers. Finally, September to October is the bye-bye sun period between when the weather is warm and cool.

Limoncello, the souvenir of Amalfi

The best thing I liked about the Amalfi Coast is that we don’t need to tirelessly stroll through its streets to find a worthy and appropriate souvenir to take back from here. The town has come down with an option for you. I am speaking of limoncello! If you weren’t informed about the lemon cultivation on the Amalfi Coast, then it is the perfect time to know about it. Lemon gardens in the terraces are one thing you will encounter on your solo travel to the Amalfi Coast.

Cultivation of natural citrus is native to the Amalfi Coast. Not only that, they are the exports of the famous drink called limoncello. So, intake of lemon juice is guaranteed on your visit to Amalfi. That said, you can buy this authentic Italian drink as souvenirs for your friends and family. Your problem of getting souvenirs is solved with a limoncello!

The lemon spot of Amalfi

Is buying a souvenir enough? Don’t you want to see the beautiful lemon gardens in Amalfi? Finding a lemon garden in Amalfi is like looking for vineyards in Florence. It is not a difficult task.

Lemon gardens can be spotted at random terraces in Amalfi. Likewise, spotting a lemon juice shop called lemon point is easy along the Amalfi Coast. I guess there wouldn’t be a single traveller who hasn’t tasted the lemon juice from the lemon point in Amalfi on their solo travel.

My poetic and peaceful place

Amalfi coast for solo travel

A piece of advice from my solo travel to Amalfi is, visiting sightseeing locations comes next to engaging the natural world. Having a calm walk down the coastal line, eating fish fries from the shoreside vendor, lying down for sunbath, climbing the hills, stopping at the  breathtaking viewpoints  best defines your time on Amalfi Coast.

And I think Amalfi is the best place to solo travel as a woman because many women need this scenic change in their life. Fresh air and heavenly surroundings to have peace of mind. Peaceful moments to take better decisions to move their life front. And that’s why Amalfi is a poetic place to me.

A place to be cherished!

Don’t forget to enjoy the scenery of Amalfi. The magnificence of its borderless sea, its uncountable greenery, and its immeasurable mountains. Amalfi is truly a place to be cherished!

A first-timer's guide to Atrani

Atrani on Italy's Amalfi Coast is attracting new interest as a filming location in the Netflix series Ripley.

And it's easy to see why. The pocket-sized town is considered one of the most beautiful in Italy .

Once a power to rival its mighty neighbor Amalfi , today Atrani, a UNESCO World Heritage site, takes home the award for smallest municipality in Italy. This enchanting beach town nestled between two mountains is perhaps the one town on the Amalfi Coast that has stayed most true to its original medieval structure. You can still walk through the original alleyways, courtyards, archways and the recognizable scalinatelle (little stairways) that make Atrani look like a Neapolitan nativity scene come to life.

Like all villages on the Amalfi Coast, Atrani has long been a tourist destination due to the natural beauty of its location and landscape. Now, tourist interest in the town is rising even more because of the Netflix series Ripley , starring Andrew Scott, set in Atrani.

A summer's day in a small seaside town built into the side of a cliff

When should I go to Atrani?

Because of its location and mild weather, the perfect time to visit Atrani is in late spring/early summer (April to June) or late summer/early fall (September to October). The tourist season usually soft-launches around Easter and explodes in mid-July. To engage in more sustainable tourism, try to avoid visiting in August, when Atrani is undoubtedly busiest and most crowded.

During the summer months, the Amalfi Coast welcomes hundreds of thousands of visitors; this tourist gold rush benefits the local economy, but it’s important to also note the negative impact that overtourism has had. Some towns, including Atrani, have become physically and economically inaccessible at times because of how crowded they are, with prices skyrocketing due to all establishments being filled to the brink. That’s not even counting the irreparable damages to the environment and to the marine ecosystem.

Atrani has mostly stayed out of mainstream attention for a very simple reason: it’s blessed by its size. With 0.2 sq km (0.07 sq miles) surface, the town has no space to physically house too many tourists. At any rate, it is advisable to travel to Atrani in low season.

How much time should I spend in Atrani?

Most tourists make Atrani a half-day stop on their Amalfi Coast trip. If you are staying elsewhere on the Amalfi Coast, take advantage of how close Atrani is to Amalfi and pop in for a quick visit after you’ve been to Amalfi. You’ll notice the different vibe right away: after spending a day in Amalfi, Atrani is the perfect place to escape the chaos while still enjoying the same otherworldly natural beauty of the coast.

You could walk every inch of Atrani in half a day, if you wanted to. How long to stay largely depends on your resources and what activities you want to pursue here. If you want to immerse yourself, relax and truly appreciate the town and what it has to offer, you should spend at least a night in Atrani.

A car winds up a narrow road between tightly packed buildings

How to get in and around Atrani?

Atrani is so close to Amalfi that you can reach Atrani from Amalfi on foot in less than 15 minutes. By car or bus, it takes only a couple of minutes with no traffic. If taking the public bus SITA during high season, be prepared to queue before you can climb aboard, and don’t expect a seat as buses are often very crowded. Tickets (€1.30) must be purchased before climbing on board; the main stop in Amalfi has a ticket machine and various physical stores that sell tickets nearby.

There are no train stations close to Atrani, but there are white cabs that can take you to and from towns on the Amalfi Coast. A tip: always ask for an estimate of the fare before you climb aboard a cab, as the amount might be more than you expect.

Be careful if you’re driving privately, as Atrani has little parking space and traffic is heavily limited. Everywhere on the Amalfi Coast, non residents’ cars can only circulate on alternate days based on license plate numbers, so look into this further if you’re thinking of renting a car to visit Atrani. Through the town hall-sponsored KCity app , you can check if there’s space to park. Car parking usually costs €3 per hour in summer.

If you only intend to visit Atrani for a few hours, another way of reaching it is by walking a scenic path from Ravello, that starts by the church of Santa Maria del Gradillo. Trek for an hour and a half among fragrant lemon trees, ancient stairways, and breathtaking views, until you pass Atrani’s cemetery and the church of San Michele Fuori Le Mura (“outside the walls”) and finally arrive in the main square Piazzetta Umberto I.

Top things to do in Atrani

Everything there is to see in Atrani can be reached on foot. It’s impossible to get lost in such a cozy town, so travel without a map and let Atrani surprise you. Walking around, you can still find traces of its ancient and glorious origins in its architecture. You’ll stumble upon churches that have stood here for almost a thousand years, like the beautiful Santa Maria Maddalena, San Salvatore de Birecto and Santa Maria Penitente.

A classic activity, especially for families , is to spend the morning at the seaside and take a dip in the Tyrrhenian Sea. Atrani’s sandy beach is small – only 130m (426ft) long – and you must reserve and pay for your spot in advance. On average, two chairs and an umbrella cost €30, and can be occupied by a max of 5 people, of which at least 2 must be children. Pets are not allowed on the beach, except for service dogs.

Don’t underestimate the beauty of Atrani’s beach at night. Come dusk, you might see lampare , fishers' boats, sailing into the night – with their tiny lamps illuminating the darkness, they create an image out of a painting or a fairy tale.

In the morning, if you are not able to get a spot on the beach but you still want to bathe in Atrani’s crystalline waters, you could consider either renting a boat or joining a tour to visit the enchanted hidden corner that the coast has to offer from the sea.

A unique thing to do in Atrani is to prepare their signature dish (sarchiapone) with the locals. Every year on July 22, Atranesi eat sarchiapone to celebrate their Patron Saint. The basis of the dish is a lean, elongated, green variety of pumpkin typical of the hills of the Amalfi Coast. The green pumpkin is carved out of its flesh, which is cooked with onion and minced meat, which will later stuff the sarchiapone before it goes in the oven, along with a filling of ricotta, mozzarella, salami, hard-boiled egg, parmesan, ham… the ingredients can vary, depending on what each Atranese family likes in their sarchiapone . If you don’t happen to be in Atrani on July 22, you can surely ask a local establishment for a private cooking class to make sarchiapone .

No matter when you go in Atrani, one of your meals should be in a restaurant by the beach – like Le Palme or Savò – and you should order a typical seafood dish like scialatielli ai frutti di mare ; you’ll be able to see, taste and smell the sea that’s right in front of you.

I will be there in either 2nd or 3rd week of May - so are the buses full so early in the season?

7 replies to this topic

' class=

That isn't "early" in the season - it is very busy already then (and, now)

Use the ferries wherever possible; buses take longer and often can't even stop at bus stops because the buses are so full they can't take on more passengers.

i would suggest staying in Minori as it has ferry service

amalfi coast solo trip

Minori. Buses from the two other locations cannot be relied upon. Especially when a connection would be needed from Furore.

amalfi coast solo trip

I have stayed twice in Minori. The first time the ferry jetty had been demolished in a storm so only buses were available. As I'm on holidays, I'm not in a rush and don't mind waiting for the next bus if the first is full. Time to get an ice cream while I wait. On my second visit, I still used the buses as the bus stop was right outside my apartment.

' class=

I was there last May and the buses were crazy busy and people with suitcases made it difficult to find a seat and we were SRO.

The suitcases should have been put underneath. They were when I was there. What is SRO?

SRO = standing room only.

' class=

You can ring the bells on the bus before you want to get off and the bus will stop.
