Born in London to Albanian parents from Kosovo, Dua Lipa attended the Sylvia Young Theatre School until she was 11, when she and her family moved back to Kosovo. Encouraged by her teacher, Lipa and convinced her parents to let her move back to London when she was 15 to follow her aspirations to become a singer. She was recorded covers and posted them on social media, in hope to find a way into the music business when she was noticed by a modeling agency who secured her an audition for a commercial for The X Factor , attracting the attention of Lana Del Rey's management team, who eventually signed her.

Her strong presence immediately separates her from many emerging pop acts. But it’s her singles that have rapidly established her as a rising star — Her debut single, “New Love,” was followed up with the soulful “Be the One” that reached the Top 10 in a dozen European territories. Longlisted for the prestigious BBC Sound of 2016, Dua Lipa released “Hotter Than Hell” and “Blow Your Mind (Mwah)” in 2016, hitting Top 20 in the UK, and climbed into Billboard’s Top 25 in the US respectively. In 2017, she earned the distinction of having three simultaneously charting singles in the UK Top 15 with “Be the One,” “Scared to Be Lonely” with Martin Garrix, and “No Lie” with Sean Paul. Later on, Lipa scored her first UK No.1 single <New Rules>, the single also went on the become No.1 in several other European countries and landed No. 2 on the US Billboard Hot 100. With over 3 million daily streams, Dua Lipa is listed among Top 10 artists in Spotify and has already accumulated 3 billion total streams across platforms. Her wins at NME Awards and MTV EMA further strengthened the 22-year-old’s position as the brightest star in pop.

Now, with the release of her self-titled debut album Dua Lipa , she reveals the full range of her ambitions. While recording her album in New York, Los Angeles, Toronto, and London, Lipa was rapidly learning the fearlessness and confidence necessary to write great songs. The songs on Dua Lipa announce the arrival of a new force in pop—irresistible on the dance floor, thoughtful under closer inspection, constantly discovering creative possibilities.

Dua Lipa Proves the Pandemic Only Made Her Stronger at ‘Future Nostalgia’ Tour Kickoff

By Celia Almeida

Celia Almeida

MIAMI — The future never looks quite as bold as humans envision it to be. Save for touchscreen tech and an electric car monopoly, the promises of the present decade have been largely squandered by a relentless pandemic that rages on more than two years after it began. Still, despite the sea of masked faces singing back at her during the first show of her long-awaited Future Nostalgia tour, an exhilarated Dua Lipa dared to conjure an alternative version of both past and future: one in which a once-in-a-century event never interrupted her inevitable rise to the top of the pop music throne.

Opening acts Lolo Zouaï and Caroline Polachek were well received by the crowd. Polachek in particular commanded a respectable amount of phone recordings from the pit as she emerged draped in a translucent, nymph-inspired outfit which enabled elastic high kicks to match her towering vocals.

Following some on-the-nose disco classics playing between sets, the house lights lowered as Purple Disco Machine’s “Body Funk” blared over the speakers. The main stage backdrop cut to static before revealing the words “In Stereocolor: Future Nostalgia” with Miami Vice -style graphics. In keeping with the Eighties aesthetics, dancers were introduced via a color-blocked, aerobics-themed credit montage as the first notes of Lipa’s “Physical” echoed throughout the arena.

Heading into the second act, the show hit pause on the Eighties homage in favor of a graphic novel theme that transported Lipa to an undersea set. In a white, shimmering one-piece, Lipa sang Nostalgia B-side “We’re Good” while sitting in front of a massive lobster prop that would have fit right in at Katy Perry’s Left Shark halftime show.

Lipa has expertly maneuvered curveballs since the album first leaked during the star-crossed month of March 2020. She’s found ways to maintain public attention on the record for the better part of two years through an expanded edition, a remix album, and a widely lauded livestream concert.

By the time she busted out “Hallucinate” in the third act of the concert, clad in a black top and short-shorts with hot pink tights and sneakers, Lipa let loose and forwent the choreography, jumping around the secondary stage in the same carefree way she might have done at a warehouse rave back home in London.

Then  — just in case the audience needed a reminder of the superstar she’s become — Lipa emerged one final time in a blinding, sparkling black cutout bodysuit that recalled Cher’s indelible “If I Could Turn Back Time” outfit, whipping her hair around as she belted out an aggressive take on Future Nostalgia ’s title track before closing with “Don’t Start Now.”

I hope she reads this. SO lemme spill the tea. It was freaking amazing. I was so close I could see ever pore on her, and lemme tell you there isn’t many. She’s so amazing and I felt the show ran pretty smoothly except for the fact that it was very hot and everyone around you was sweating their ass off. But she was great. Best night of my life seeing the love of my life. She was so good and it was so beautiful if she ever were to return I would be there in a heart beat. Though the initial show was cancelled I wasn’t one bit mad after attending this one and it was really nice that my old tickets still were valid. Thanks dua, love you lots. -your biggest fan:)

It was the most lit concert i had ever attended. Dua was so full of life & super hyped for the whole concert. Im still upset that yesterday had come to an end way too soon. The most memorable memory i had was the moment she teared uo in her speech for 'New Love' as that song was way too genuine and its from the most vulnerable side of hers. The next memorable moment was the participation in 'IDGAF'the crowd was so wild, and Dua also had a moment with us when she remixed the sentence 'I dont give a F' like amazing man this is the most mesmerising concert i had ever attended. I love you Dua. (heartsheartshearts)

Oh, wow. Dua Lipa was absolutely fantastic! She is extraordinarily talented and really knows how to work a crowd. The band was brilliant — and I can say it was definitely loud enough!

I was very lucky to see her at a venue such as the Apollo. Such a small venue for somebody doing an arena tour! We got the tickets very early on, before she became massive, and I’m very glad we did.

The whole way home I was smiling. The last song — New Rules — set the place on fire, that last chorus was insanely good, and all complete with confetti canons!

Thank you for the time, Dua Lipa! Money well-spent; it was worth every second!

This concert will stay in my mind for as long as I live, thank you!

About Megan Thee Stallion

Hailing from Houston, Megan Thee Stallion is a three time GRAMMY winner, philanthropist and ever-evolving cultural icon.  From the release of her critically acclaimed and Gold certified debut album, Good News, to earning two global record breaking Billboard Hot 100 #1 hits with the “Savage Remix” featuring Beyoncé, and “WAP” with Cardi B, Megan has proven unstoppable.  Megan has been recognized for her musical achievements with three GRAMMY wins, including Best New Artist and nine BET Awards.

Megan was also honored as one of TIME’s 100 Most Influential People of 2020. In October 2020, following a powerful and politically charged performance on Saturday Night Live that demanded justice for Breonna Taylor, Megan published her monumental “Why I Speak Up For Black Women” op-ed and accompanying visual with The New York Times.

About Caroline Polachek

Two years since taking the music world by storm with  Pang  — her lush and dazzling head-trip of an album — Caroline Polachek has returned with the infectious single “Bunny Is A Rider.” Polachek says of the song: “’Bunny Is A Rider’ is a summer jam about being unavailable. Bunny is slippery, impossible to get ahold of. Maybe it’s a fantasy, maybe it’s a bad attitude. But anyone can be bunny, at least for three minutes and seventeen seconds.”

Her previous album  Pang  topped year-end lists globally — including Dazed, The Guardian, NPR, to name a few. The record’s lush romanticism and acrobatic vocal stylings firmly established her as one of the most singular and captivating singer-songwriters of a generation.

About Lolo Zouaï

Born in Paris to a French mother and Algerian father, singer, songwriter, and producer Lolo Zouaï (zoo-EYE) moved to the Sunset District of San Francisco as a young child when her parents won the Visa lottery. After high school, Lolo spent some time alone back in Paris before relocating to New York City with her mother. It was there that Zouaï wrote her 2018 breakout single, “High Highs to Low Lows,” which propelled her into a series of independent singles, videos, and headline shows around the world, ultimately leading to the release of her highly anticipated debut album in April 2019. Since the release of her album,  High Highs to Low Lows , Lolo has sold out headlines across 14 different countries, amassed over 200 million streams worldwide, and appeared in global campaigns for COACH, Tommy Hilfiger, Adidas, Nike, and more. She is thrilled to be supporting Dua Lipa on her upcoming arena tour in 2022.

Dua Lipa in Tokyo wearing a black leather outfit

My Time In Tokyo

Last month, I had the pleasure of spending some time in Tokyo again, a city where the energy is almost palpable. It’s like nowhere else I’ve been, and I’m fascinated by its merging of old and new, tradition and technology. I was lucky enough to take a deep dive into this mind-blowing city on my latest visit and I’m already trying to find reasons to go back. Below are the places I recommend you seek out.

  • Narukiyo Izakaya  – a no-menu dinner place that I am obsessed with; great food, a really fun vibe and the owner seems to have an obsession with having phallic objects all around.
  • Mori Art Museum  – such a cool museum with amazing exhibitions. (When I was there, I went to  Listen To The Sound Of The Earth Turning , which made me rethink who we are as people and the state the world is in right now.)
  • Sushi Yuu  – this is my absolute favourite sushi spot.
  • Studio Ghibli Museum  – if you’re a fan of Ghibli anime then this is a  must -see – it’s so fun to dive into this creative world (and the Ghibli theme park opened earlier this month).
  • Amore Vintage  – the best collection of vintage designer bags and accessories, and the occasional apparel. I try not to shop and save up to go here when I’m in Tokyo – it’s worth the wait.

As Griff Spins, She Also Soars

The British pop star discusses her relationship with Taylor Swift, supporting Dua Lipa on tour, and her newest EP, Ver2igo Vol 2 .

griff

Griff can’t stop getting gifts from fans. In the span of her two-hour set at Le Poisson Rouge in New York City in February, she’s already accepted three different items, and even more of her supporters are pining to hand her some goodies. This is common for the British rising star, I soon learn. After the show, fans gather to hand her more and more trinkets, drawings, and notes. The adoration doesn’t stop at presents; during one of Griff’s past shows, someone dressed up in an astronaut costume in reference to her song of the same name. “What a legend,” Griff says of that particular fan. “I got started [performing live] in COVID, so it’s still quite strange to tangibly see people show up that know every lyric and are so passionate about these songs. It’s really cool.”

Her songs are emotionally autobiographical, too. Sarah Griffiths, known by her stage name Griff, grew up in England. Her father is the son of Jamaican immigrants and works in information technology, and her mom, who is Chinese, came to the United Kingdom during the Vietnam war. They are foster parents, meaning Griff always had new siblings running around, in addition to her two biological older brothers. She grew up in the Christian church, where she often was moved by the music. “Worship songs are some of the most beautiful and oldest and most lasting songs because they think there’s something to be said for just a melody that a whole group of people can sing,” she tells me at the Chelsea Hotel a day before her show. “I always could see the purpose of music in a bigger way.”

While growing up in a predominantly white suburb of London, Griff often felt like she was “on the outside” due to her mixed race and began writing music as a symptom of loneliness. For a while, the 23-year-old thought her business cards would read songwriter, not pop star. “I never saw these as my songs,” she says. “It was always just an outlet and a bit of therapy. It gave me confidence.”

Griff began releasing music on social media and was later signed to Warner Records in 2019. The moment Griff caught the music world’s attention was with her 2021 single “Black Hole” and the mixtape that came shortly after, One Foot in Front of the Other . She soon performed on Late Night With Seth Meyers and earned the Brit Award for Rising Star in 2021. The evening of the ceremony, she performed “Black Hole” with an Ed-Sheeran like loop track. This was also one of her first live shows.

About a year later, Griff found herself on tour with some of the greats. She quickly caught the attention of Dua Lipa (“She works hard, man,” Griff says), Coldplay (“You’re never going to see a hundred thousand people in a room like that experiencing such joy and all united in one song.”) and yes, Ed Sheeran, who shares her love of the sonic loop (“He’s the most down-to-earth famous person you’ll ever meet.”). Essentially, Griff went from her bedroom to stadiums in just a few years.

“I think my [U.S.] tour will come, but I spent so long on the road on these big supports,” she says. “I just haven’t been in the room with people who actually know my songs in a very long time. I wanted to give some fans the opportunity to sing some of our favorite songs.” That opportunity came earlier this year with two U.S. shows—one at the iconic Roxy Theatre in Los Angeles, and the intimate Le Poisson Rouge in New York. Both shows sold out in minutes.

Midway through the show, Griff paints a giant swirl on a backdrop that matches a swirl of hair on her head—a visual throughline for her Vertigo era, the multi-part venture spanning multiple EPs. “The spirals have become a real symbol for this project,” she explains.

Griff’s image is highly curated. She sometimes designs her own clothes, a personal passion she’d like to dive into further, and she also finds her hair to be central to her work. She has a balled ponytail that night, resembling a rosary. “I’ve got very, very textual Afro hair,” she says. “The beauty industry is not up to speed yet really on how to nourish Black hair, and so I thought if I just do something consistent, at least I can rock up to set anywhere and just know that this is what I’m doing and it’s a look and there’s less risk of someone just cinching off my hair.”

She continues, “I think also the most beautiful thing about Black hair is that you can afford to be more sculptural with it because it molds into so many different textures. That’s why being more architectural with it is fun to me, and I think it plays into a surreal fashion imagery that I love.”

“Vertigo” served as the lead single from Vert1go Vol. 1 , which arrived in 2023, and it will continue to anchor the series. “I think that the term refers to more of an emotional state to me and this idea of spinning and dizziness and feeling upside down,” she says. “I feel like that’s a feeling you go through in adolescence and heartbreak. I think that’s what’s underpinning all of these songs is this feeling of floating and not quite finding your balance and figuring that out in the lyrics.”

The next part in the Vertigo series drops tomorrow, Ver2igo Vol. 2 . Instead of releasing a full album at once, Griff decided to release this project in segments and chapters, allowing her fans time to sit with the songs. The second entry into the Vertigo franchise feels lighter than the first. It’s more jubilant and dancy, but still brings the whizzing planetarium pop Griff sound. It feels as if we’re embarking on a musical novella with Griff. “Volume two has a dash of euphoria, and I do think the music after that also has more of that. There’s an arc,” Griff says, alluding to a possible part three. “I’m a new artist and I love all of these songs so much that I want people to be able to process each song.”

At her show, she performs a then-unreleased song from Ver2igo Vol. 2 , “Miss Me Too,” which served as the lead single to the project. The focused silence of the crowd is deafening, everyone seemingly awestruck by the high-energy hit being played in front of them. “Miss Me Too,” which has since been released on streaming, has seen some success on TikTok, and “Cycles,” which she teased during her recently concluded Europe tour, is getting rave reviews from fans as well. This spells good news for the pop star, as TikTok and Instagram Reels become more and more important for music streams. “I think it’s such an amazing discovery tool, but I constantly feel on the back of it, to be honest,” she says of the platforms. “You go through so much work, making the music, writing the lyrics, finishing it, mixing it, putting visuals together for it, putting the live show together. It’s almost all redundant unless you’re putting something really compelling out on TikTok as well. I do think music is suffering because of it.”

Griff did have some more social media success a few months back. After releasing “Vertigo,” she got some love from an idol of hers: Taylor Swift, who shared the song in her Instagram story. “Damn Griff, I love this one,” Swift captioned the post. Griff, who had only met the Grammy winner once, had no idea the post was coming. She was sitting at her dinner table and her phone exploded, no warning in sight.

Perhaps the most serendipitous part of that post was that Griff wrote “Vertigo” in the home of Imogen Heap (who wrote the 1989 track “Clean” with Swift). In her house, there was a Polaroid of Swift and one of the Grammys she won for 1989. “They just kind of sprinkled a blessing of songwriting energy in that room,” Griff says, saying the song somewhat inspired her most recent hit, “Miss Me Too.” Swift’s post was a true stamp of approval for Griff, who describes herself as a Swifite (her dream surprise song pairing at The Eras Tour, for which she doesn’t have tickets quite yet, is “Our Song” and “Hey Stephen”). “I’m very grateful to her,” Griff says. “She doesn’t have to do that at all.”

Swift and Griff have something else in common, too, besides a mutual respect. They both put every piece of themselves and who they are into their work. That’s clear as Griff closes out her set in New York, sweat and glitter glistening on her fans’ noses. Her music strikes a nerve, and for Griff, she’s ready to follow wherever it takes her. “Music and creative stuff are such weird things that you kind of just have to be at the mercy of wherever where it may take you,” she says. “I haven’t put too many expectations on this yet, other than just put out all this music and really hope it resonates with people.”

Dua Lipa’s Radical Optimism Style Marks a Major Gear Shift

By Alice Newbold

Image may contain Performer Person Solo Performance Electrical Device Microphone Adult Accessories and Jewelry

Much has been made of Dua Lipa ’s graduation from popstrel to pop diva–the kind who opens the Grammys, presents Kylie Minogue with the Global Icon Award at the Brits, and stars in a summer blockbuster while polishing off her third album just because Greta Gerwig asked her to. The launch of Radical Optimism has revved Lipa’s career up a notch and there’s been a major gear shift on the style front too.

While straddling Tinseltown and the world’s biggest stadiums, Dua–who is firmly in media mogul mode, traversing continents while also producing her podcast and newsletter–has kept one thing constant in her wardrobe: leather. Her sexy boss bitch style hinges on vintage Raf Simons macs, Chrome Hearts stagewear teetering on bondage, slick Jil Sander coords, Ludovic de Saint Sernin odes to The Matrix and GCDS motocross jackets. At times ( hello Versace Brit Awards gown ), that luxed-up leather can verge on subversive nightclubber, cruel mistress (here’s looking at you blood-red studded Valentino mac), or racer babe (all that silver Tiffany & Co jewelry and super-tight Mugler), but for the most part, it’s an entirely slick proposition masterminded by Lipa’s longtime stylist Lorenzo Posocco.

Their partnership is proof that it pays to stick to one solid creative collaborator rather than chasing the next big thing. Posocco has grown up with Dua; he understands the vision; he knows there will be no more awkward dance routines, only pristine production; he appreciates that she is organized to the nth degree and, most importantly, he gets what works for her. Posocco curates rails and rails of looks so that Lipa can pool her energies elsewhere. It works.

The only time we see Dua soften her curated flame-haired image is with new love interest Callum Turner. PDA fashion–think: just-rolled-out-of-bed denim , tees and swaddling coats–takes precedence over editorial looks, but Lipa will never compromise on the accessory front. Posocco’s capacity for securing the latest It-bag , no matter whether Dua is in Mexico or India, is unparalleled. She is currently toting a Birkin and Chanel flap model in line with her elevated style, but she’s consistently loyal to Gucci’s Jackie and Bottega’s Gemelli–although these pale in comparison to the ultimate accessory: the internet’s current favorite boyfriend. Whether the romantic dalliance is merely a brief flirtation is besides the point–Dua and Callum are both, quite literally, dining out on the publicity.

As this is a popstar style dissection, there are the requisite bodysuits to discuss. The Radical Optimism album artwork sees Dua straddle a pole in a black body, white socks and heeled Mary-Janes, and there’s plenty of promo shots of her diving into the sea–“sometimes you gotta be in deep waters to find yourself”–in a bottom-accenting one-piece. Look, the businesswoman knows what sells, and she’s peddling something of a lifestyle empire. There was even a Barry’s Bootcamp class to promote the “Training Season” single drop. We all considered going.

Next on the agenda is the career-defining headline slot at Glastonbury. As evidenced by her recent awards show performances, Dua Lipa has put in the work. It will be painstakingly choreographed to the point of appearing effortless, with stagewear that simultaneously shows she has her finger on the emerging designer pulse, but also Donatella on speed dial. She will, by the end of the summer, have us in the palm of her hand like some kind of trustworthy Houdini who has had this planned all along. Or at the very least be something of a leather jacket influencer. Callum has one already.

Dua Lipa: how to get tickets for her Royal Albert Hall performance

Dua Lipa ’s everywhere at the moment – and we’re not mad about it.

The award-winning British pop star is releasing her third studio album Radical Optimism on May 3, and has been duly building up to it for the last seven months. She started by posting teaser images and clips on her Instagram back in October last year, before November’s mega-announcement that new music was in the works.

Since then we’ve had a barrage of Dua content: we’ve been treated to clubby singles Houdini and Training Season, a pair of stellar performances at the Grammys and the Brits, a flurry of magazine cover interviews and chat show appearances, and the announcement of a summer tour – half of which is already sold out – that includes a headlining stop at Glastonbury and a closing performance at the Royal Albert Hall in October.

The tickets for the London performance go on sale in two days. Here’s everything you need to know to prep for the big sale.

When will tickets go on sale?

General sale tickets will go on sale at 10am on 12 April – ie. this Friday morning. Find your tickets via  Ticketmaster  – according to the Royal Albert Hall there will only be “a very limited allocation of tickets” available to buy via their box office.

Other things to note: there’s going to be a limit of two tickets per booking, and no under 14 year olds will be allowed into the standing arena.

Is there a presale?

No – there’s no presale and there’s no priority booking for Friends & Patrons this time.

And for those with accessibility needs?

People who have accessibility needs will be able to get tickets from the Royal Albert Hall’s box office by calling 020 7589 8212.

Can you buy your tickets from any other place?

Yes, after the ticket sale has gone ahead, there will be resales but fans should only purchase these tickets through the Royal Albert Hall’s box office, through Twickets or other approved agents. Find more clarification on their website here .
