“Being a tour guide makes me feel proud and gives me a sense of accomplishment!” said Pau Porta Poveda, an Amazon tour guide based in Dartford, England. “I love being able to welcome our visitors and family members to our ‘home’.”

Every tour lasts approximately one hour and features overviews of key processes and technology, safety and wellness innovations, Amazon’s peculiar culture, and a Q&A session. The tours are also supported by Amazon leadership.

Robert Kowalik, Amazon’s Vice President of Operations for North America, said, “I’m extremely excited for more communities to see how we make the Amazon magic happen. Amazon is an exciting place to have a career. Tours allow us to share some of that excitement with our customers.”

Amazon is opening the doors of its Manchester centre to the public - to show off its robotic technology

Online retail giant Amazon is opening its doors to Mancunians - to show off the latest robotic technology.

The public tours, which are the first of their kind in the UK, will give access to the fulfillment centre equipped with the latest digital machinery.

Starting next month the guided tours last around one hour and are open to anyone over the age of six.

Amazon kicked off the stunt by inviting more than 80 children from local primary and secondary schools into its Manchester centre in Wythenshawe.

Pupils got a behind-the-scenes look at the fulfilment centre, which employs more than 1,200 permanent staff.

On the tour, they saw how Amazon stores, picks and packs products that are shipped from Manchester to customers around the world.

The Manchester fulfilment centre is the same size as 3.5 football pitches and holds millions of products from books and toys – to kettles, toasters and computers.

amazon fulfillment center manchester tour

Neil Travis at the Manchester Fulfilment Centre, said: “We’re extremely proud of the efforts of everyone who works in our fulfilment centres and opening Manchester up to these tours is the perfect way to recognise all of their achievements.

"We’re especially thrilled to share some of the exciting things we do here in Manchester to deliver a high quality of service to our customers and look forward to welcoming people through our doors in the coming months – not least the mesmerizing robotics which move and lift products through the fulfilment centre.”

It comes after criticism of working practises elsewhere at Amazon, including an undercover report from the Sunday Mirror last year at the online shopping giant's warehouse in Essex.

Amazon, which celebrates its 20 birthday in the UK this year, has a history of developing and introducing cutting-edge technology into fulfilment centres.

The robots slide under a tower of shelves where products are stowed, lift it and move it through the centre.

Tens of thousands of the products stored at Amazon in Manchester belong to small businesses selling on Amazon Marketplace who use Fulfilment by Amazon (FBA) to fulfil orders to customers across Europe.

Mike Kane MP for Wythenshawe and Sale East said: “Jobs in the digital and tech sector are growing rapidly here in Greater Manchester.

"Amazon’s tours are a great way of reaching out to children and young people locally and showing them the opportunities that exist.

"It’s important that businesses open their doors to inspire and engage our future generations and I am pleased that Amazon are playing their part.”

The Manchester fulfilment centre is the fourth site in the UK to offer public tours – but the first that is equipped with Amazon Robotics technology.

Manchester joins Amazon buildings in Hemel Hempstead, Dunfermline in Scotland, and Rugeley in Staffordshire where tours have been taking place since 2015. Since launch, more than 6,000 people have been on a public tour in the UK.

Members of the public can sign up at http://uk.amazonfctours.com/ for free tours of the Manchester site, with the first taking place at the beginning of April.

About Manchester

More than just a football club.

As the second-largest metropolitan area in England, Manchester lies in the North West England region. Manchester has the honour of being the world's first industrialized city, as a result of the textile boom which began the industrial revolution, and the world's first railway station.

Continuing the trend of first’s, Manchester was the first city in the UK to run a modern light rail tram system called the Manchester Metrolink. Manchester Airport is the largest airport in the UK outside of London and connects to more destinations than any of the other airports in the UK including Africa, Asia, Europe, Middle East and North America.

The city has a wealth of offerings including architecture, music, media, science and engineering, and sporting teams while three universities also are located in the city. Nature is also on the doorstep with six designated Local Nature Reserves: Chorlton Water Park, Blackley Forest, Clayton Vale and Chorlton Ees, Ivy Green, Boggart Hole Clough and Highfield Country Park.

Complete List of Amazon Fulfillment Center Locations

  • Tim Carlson
  • August 29, 2023

Amazon has over a million employees around the world, working tirelessly to help its numerous sellers fulfill orders around the globe. With a growing list of  Amazon fulfillment center locations in the United States and around  the world, the company’s FBA has only gotten more efficient.

Now, it’s even easier to find an ideal location for fulfillment and to get your products into the hands of customers even more quickly.

How many Amazon Fulfillment Centers are there?

Amazon operates over 185 fulfillment centers around the world. These are spread out across North America, Europe, Asia, and other continents, giving them a presence in many major global markets. Specifically, they have facilities in over 16 countries, including the United States, Canada, Mexico, United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Japan, China, and India, to name a few.

Projections for future locations are not always readily available, as Amazon’s expansion plans are typically kept private until officially announced. However, the company’s continuous growth and commitment to offering prime shipping and other rapid delivery options suggest they will continue to open new fulfillment centers in strategic locations.

How does Amazon select potential fulfillment center locations?

Amazon’s approach to selecting fulfillment center locations is strategic and based on several factors:

  • Population Density: Amazon typically places fulfillment centers near heavily populated areas to ensure quick delivery to a large number of customers.
  • Proximity to Suppliers: Being closer to manufacturers and suppliers can reduce transportation costs and times.
  • Transportation Networks: A good road, rail, and sometimes port infrastructure is crucial for quick transportation of goods.
  • Economic Incentives: Sometimes local governments offer tax breaks or other incentives to attract Amazon’s investment in their community.

How does Amazon assign me a fulfillment center?

When you become a seller on Amazon and decide to use their Fulfilled by Amazon (FBA) service, Amazon determines which fulfillment center your inventory should go to based on several factors:

  • Product Category: Certain centers might specialize in particular categories, like apparel or electronics.
  • Storage Space: If a particular fulfillment center is nearing its storage capacity, Amazon might direct your inventory to another location.
  • Proximity to Warehouse: Often, Amazon will try to store your inventory in a warehouse that’s closer to your business location to reduce shipping times and costs for inbound inventory.

What do the Amazon center’s codes mean? Each Amazon fulfillment center is assigned a unique code. This code is often linked to the nearest major airport. For example, an Amazon fulfillment center located near the Dallas Fort Worth International Airport might have the code DFW1. Using these codes, sellers can quickly identify where their inventory is located, and it also helps Amazon manage logistics efficiently.

What are the various types of Amazon fulfillment centers and warehouses?

  • Fulfillment Centers: These are the heart of Amazon’s network. Here, products are received, stored, picked, packed, and shipped to the end customer.
  • Specialty Centers: These facilities focus on handling specific categories of items, like apparel, oversized items, or hazardous materials.
  • Sortation Centers: After items are picked and packed at a fulfillment center, they might be sent to a sortation center. Here, packages are sorted and consolidated for delivery to specific regions.
  • Receiving Centers: These facilities primarily handle inventory intake. Sellers send their products here, and after intake, they are then sent to the appropriate fulfillment center.

I’ve spent 16 years working inside Amazon fulfillment centers. Here are some of the ways we support our employees.

Over my 16-year tenure at Amazon, I've witnessed our operations network’s remarkable expansion to better serve the needs of both our employees and customers. Through the years, I’ve been lucky to meet, lead, and work with thousands of employees, walk the floor of hundreds of buildings, and help shape many of the things we do to support our teams and deliver for our customers. I often get asked questions from outside Amazon about what it’s like to work here, so I wanted to share my observations on one of my favorite topics, and something we focus a lot of time on across our network: creating a safe and supportive work environment for all employees.

Amazon employees wear safety vests in a fulfillment center

As a company, we’ve been sharing information about our safety data and programs for several years (for example, you can read our 2023 safety performance and our industry-leading heat mitigation strategy ), but here’s a bit more about four ways we work to support our team.

1. Ensure performance expectations are transparent and fair

Like any business, we have performance expectations for all of our teams, but these expectations are based on multiple factors including the performance of the entire team, site wide. Our approach ensures everyone is on equal footing and their performance evaluation is insulated from things outside of employees’ control—like changes in the business, inventory, freight mix, or seasonal impacts . Our employees can see their own performance at any time and can talk to their manager if they’re having trouble finding the information. This way, if there is ever an instance where an employee may be struggling, we can work with them to understand their challenges, and provide them additional training or coaching to help them be successful.

An image of Sarah Rhoads standing inside a fulfillment center with two other Amazon employees talking and laughing.

2. Support each employee’s growth and development

We want Amazon to be a place where employees can build careers as well as a place where they can learn skills to succeed outside of Amazon. One of my favorite programs is Career Choice , which offers pre-paid tuition and skills training to our hourly employees. The program offers employees ways to start or finish their college degrees, earn a high school diploma, improve their language fluency, or earn an industry certification. We've seen employees use this program to work their way up to manager and site leadership ranks within Amazon, or to move outside the company into skilled roles with professional certifications, like long haul truck driving and robotics.

An image of Abel, an Amazon employee on the transportation team.

Career Choice is designed to support everyone’s individual journeys—whether they want to learn a new skill to advance within their current role or explore a career pivot . We've seen employees use this program to work their way up to manager and site leadership ranks within Amazon, or even to move outside the company into skilled roles with professional certifications, like long haul truck driving. For example, more than 28,000 Amazon employees have participated in the truck-driving training program, offered through Career Choice, to earn their Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and successfully transition into a commercial driving role. In 2023, we also added several new benefit offerings, including a new emergency savings program and a financial assistance pilot program that helped save customer fulfillment and operations employees nearly $20 million—all available from day one of employment. Worldwide, nearly 200,000 Amazon employees have participated in Career Choice since it launched in 2012, with record participation last year, and I’ve heard members of our team say this is their favorite benefit we offer. It’s been so exciting and rewarding to see it grow and help change our employees’ careers for the better.

Image of employee Jessica standing in a fulfillment center holding her laptop and smiling.

In addition to offering unique skills training like Career Choice, we also invest heavily in offering great pay and benefits, which we know are important parts of helping our team live healthy lives. Our full-time operations employees earn an average hourly wage of over $20.50 , and are provided with anytime access to earned pay; health, vision, and dental insurance from the first day on the job; a 401(k) with company match; up to 20 weeks of paid pregnancy/parental leave for birth parents (six weeks for eligible supporting parents); and Amazon’s Resources for Living program, a free benefit offering mental health and financial services and support for employees, their families, and their households.

3. Leverage technology to enhance employee safety and security

One thing I love most about Amazon is the fact that we’re constantly innovating, inventing, and investing to keep our team safe. From smaller technology advancements like height adjustable desks to improve ergonomics to first-of-its kind robotics , we’re always striving to help our employees work with ease—both physically and mentally.

An Amazon employee looks up at a robotic system in a fulfillment center.

Today, we have more than 750,000 robots across our worldwide operations supplementing our employees’ work and creating a safer environment—helping to alleviate physical tasks like walking longer distances or bending and twisting to pick up packages. For example, we recently deployed a new innovation we call Sequoia at a site in Texas. Sequoia is a newly-designed ergonomic workstation where containers are delivered to an employee so they can do even more of their work in their ergonomic “power zone” (the area between the shoulder and mid-thigh). We’re really excited to roll out Sequoia at other sites in our network because it helps minimize how often employees have to reach above their heads or squat down to pick customer orders, which helps prevent injuries.

Amazon Industrial Innovation Fund

Our robots also go beyond supporting employees in their current jobs—they create new kinds of job opportunities. Since we started introducing robotics to our sites, we’ve created more than 700 new job categories and hired hundreds of thousands of employees into these new roles. And to help our team take advantage of those opportunities, we’ve created skills training programs that teach employees how to train and fix robots—skills that they can use here or at other companies as they grow their careers.

An image of Sarah Rhoads in her pilot gear kneeling in front of a large plane and smiling for a photo.

4. seek employee feedback to improve our operations.

We know a big part of supporting our team is creating a culture where every employee can express themselves comfortably and have their voice heard, and our employees’ feedback is one of the most effective ways to ensure we’re always improving. It’s why we provide a wide variety of feedback mechanisms , including anonymous options. One example is Dragonfly. This tool—available on employees’ devices and at site kiosks—lets them easily share safety concerns and suggestions, and site managers are immediately informed so they can take appropriate action. With over 1.1 million employees working in our operations, small safety process improvements can have a big impact at scale, and in 2023 alone, we successfully addressed more than 200,000 Dragonfly observations to help make our sites safer.

In addition to Dragonfly, every shift starts with a safety start-up meeting, employees can post comments, questions, or suggestions to our Voice of the Associate boards—which are answered directly by managers, and we leverage anonymous surveys to gather direct feedback.

These are just a few of the things I’ve seen, been lucky to help build, and take pride in across our operations. I want to extend a thank you to all the teams involved, and our employees who participate in these programs and give us feedback which makes us better every day.

If you’d like to meet some of our team and see inside one of our buildings, I encourage you to come and see for yourself —we offer tours to the public, and we’d love to see you there.

Amazon debuts $400 million robotic warehouse in North Andover, biggest in the state

A facility on the site of an old telephone factory will employ 1,500 workers — and thousands more robots.

Amazon fulfillment center in North Andover

Amazon unveiled its largest facility in Massachusetts on Monday, a staggering five-story warehouse in North Andover with almost 4 million square feet of space to hold everything from books and DVDs to cans of soup.

The fulfillment center on the site of a former telephone company factory cost about $400 million to build and will employ 1,500 people, Amazon said. As big as 66 football fields, the facility has 12 miles of conveyor belts to handle hundreds of thousands of orders per day, the company said. It is also home to thousands of robots that help automate the movement of goods.

Though it opened in January, Amazon invited Governor Maura Healey and other state and local officials to a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Monday morning. North Andover approved the project in 2019 , after losing out on a bid to host Amazon’s HQ2 office campus, granting $27 million of property tax breaks for the warehouse over 10 years.

Tye Brady, chief technologist for Amazon Robotics (left), tours Amazon's new warehouse in North Andover with Governor Maura Healey (center) and Lieutenant Governor Kim Driscoll (right).

The facility is Amazon’s first highly automated warehouse in Massachusetts, Tye Brady, chief technologist for Amazon Robotics, told the Globe in an interview. Looking like a proud papa, Brady, who is based in Massachusetts, gave a Globe reporter a tour of the facility the day before the ribbon cutting. “It just showed up like a big baby bouncing boy,” Brady said with enthusiasm.

All of the North Andover robots are designed in-house and manufactured at one of two Amazon factories in Massachusetts. In fact, all of the 750,000 robots Amazon has deployed worldwide were built in Massachusetts, Brady said. (Amazon Robotics grew out of Amazon’s acquisition of North Reading-based Kiva Systems in 2012.)

“It’s applied robotics,” he said. “They’re not doing back flips or dances out there on the floor — I love those, I get it — but they’re doing the job of moving goods on time and very reliably.”

The entire warehouse is designed to handle items that are no larger than 18-1/2 inches on a side — just right to fit in the common yellow plastic totes that are the blood vessels of the 21st-century logistics industry. The new warehouse is more than twice the size of Amazon’s Fall River facility that handles larger goods .

A new Amazon facility in North Andover is the company's first highly automated warehouse in Massachusetts, said Tye Brady, chief technologist for Amazon Robotics.

Brady explained that the facility employs three distinct types of robots, which are intended to take over menial, monotonous, and repetitive jobs.

On the first floor, workers unload cases of goods from trucks and unpack all of the items into yellow totes. The totes are then sent to one of the top four floors where items are stored.

On each storage floor, a vast central space is fenced off as the domain of Amazon’s Hercules robots — round, flat machines on wheels that zip under tall shelving pods filled with stored items. The robots move the shelving pods where they are needed. Each pod has four sides of shelves and each side has 30 or more cubbies holding different items.

Around the edges of the floor, workers at high-tech stations receive totes filled with items needing to be stored. As they lift goods from the tote, an optical scanner identifies each item. A Hercules robot brings a shelving pod to the worker’s station. The worker can place the item in any cubby on the pod that looks like it has enough room, while a Lidar sensor tracks exactly where the item ended up. Like an unimaginably complicated jigsaw puzzle, millions of items are distributed at random across thousands of shelving pods.

But the system knows where every item is. Between the time when a customer selects items on Amazon’s website and clicks to order the items for delivery, the company’s systems locate the items and calculate two ways to deliver them to the customer’s front door for redundancy, Brady said.

At other stations around the edges, workers conduct the process of fulfilling customer orders. Empty totes are filled with orders and returned to the first floor, where orders are packaged and shipped.

Once ready for shipping, the system of getting each package to the correct truck relies on two other Amazon robots. As packages flow along a conveyor belt, an automated arm dubbed Robin lifts up and scans packages one at a time and sets them down on a mobile robot called Pegasus. Each wheeled Pegasus robot then carries the package to a conveyor that will bring the package to the correct truck bay.

An Amazon worker grabs items for a customer order from a shelving pod moved by one of the company's Hercules robots.

Amazon says the increased use of robotics improves safety and cuts down on worker injuries.

Gordon Burtch, a professor at Boston University Questrom School of Business who studies workplace automation, said studies have confirmed that Amazon’s robots reduce the number of severe injuries in the company’s facilities. But, he said, his research also has found an increase in less severe injuries from repetitive tasks.

“They are making the work safer for warehouse associates,” Burtch said. But, the warehouse workers among robots “are not only required to work more quickly, they also end up standing in one spot, performing the same monotonous task over and over. This combination of speed and repetition leads to more stress-based injuries among workers.”

The site of the North Andover warehouse was an AT&T telephone factory for decades , employing as many as 12,000 workers at its peak in the 1980s. After the breakup of the Bell system, the factory was owned by Lucent Technologies and made networking gear until it closed in 2008 .

Amazon unveiled its largest facility in Massachusetts on Monday, a staggering five-story warehouse in North Andover with almost 4 million square feet of space to hold everything from books and DVDs to cans of soup.
