My husband and I enjoy a good beer but are far from connoisseurs. We discovered this tour online and signed up. We had a great time and our guide was very knowledgeable! Learned a lot and thoroughly enjoyed our experience. I would definitely recommend it!

I loved this tour! Would definitely take another. The guides are relaxed and the vibe is casual. After a couple tastes, your group begins to feel more like friends as you travel to different breweries. The pours were generous and exploratory of the different offerings each brewery had.

Our guide was quite knowledgeable about the brewing process. He gave a great tour and was easy going and personable. Our group got along well and we all hugged bye at the end. It was a quick 3 hours, but well worth the price and the time. Plus, lots of different beers to try!

We had a blast! This was the highlight of our Asheville trip. Our guide was knowledgeable and made sure everyone on the tour got to try beers they liked. She took us to awesome spots and the group size was just right. She also gave us great recommendations for places to go after the tour.

We booked this tour when we were in Asheville for our honeymoon and it was such a fun time. Jason was an excellent tour guide! He did a fantastic job. The tour was a blast - we’d recommended this tour as a must stop on your trip! A great way to see Asheville and taste really good beers!!! 10/10 recommend!

What Our Guests Think About Asheville Brews Cruise

icon

JC knows anything and everything about beer. He even made sure we had water at each stop. Well worth the money and we will definitely book again when we return to Asheville. If you like beer, you MUST do this tour!

JC is the BOMB - he made the cruisin' a blast and he is sooooo knowledgable! I highly recommend JC and Shorty (the bus) for an afternoon of great beers and entertainment!!

We got this tour from our great friends who live in the town and we really thanks them for that experience! All you want to know about the Asheville beers and breweries, just ask the guide. As we are from the country where the "beer was born" (Czech Republic, Pilsner) I appreciated the knowledge of that history as well 👍 We spent a lot of fun there and tasted many types of beers during the tour, the Brew Cruise bus was amazing, we met nice people from other countries. Absolutely recommend that 🍻

We had an absolute blast on this trip! Could not recommend more and would do it again when we are back in town!

JC was so knowledgeable and made the tour such a fun experience. Anyone visiting Asheville needs to do this tour and do it as your first activity. It was awesome!

JC was friendly, knowledgeable, and enthusiastic. Definitely recommended.

JC was a great tour guide.

JC is great. What a fun guy and fun to be around.

Bringing the hip to hipster, Zebulon brewing is only open 1-6 on Friday and Saturday creating the elusive waiting and scheduling game to beer collectors from all over the world. asheville breweries tour

Beer City, USA: A Self-Guided Brewery Tour of Asheville, NC

When I first read about Asheville, North Carolina having the most breweries per capita of any city in the United States, you bet your behind that I started packing my bags. I don’t really drink too much anymore due to the fact that my body has aged so much more rapidly than my naïve little mind, and so a margarita with dinner is enough to give me a hangover well into the next afternoon. A shot of tequila is enough to make me immediately blow chunks all over the floor and then turn in for the night. Two glasses of wine is enough to make me cry by myself in the corner as I contemplate all the most devastating things in life and wonder why no one loves me.

Bottom line: I am not that fun when I drink. In a way I feel robbed of my youth, being this way, but I’ve accepted this is who I am. The only thing I can drink without guaranteed disastrous repercussions, and the one thing I really, truly love to drink, is beer.

But let’s be real. You are not here reading this post because you want to know about what a loser I am. You’re here because you want to hit as many breweries as possible in one afternoon in Asheville.

My sister Meredith and I spent about 10 hours hopping from brewery to brewery, and there were aspects that we enjoyed about each. The air was cold and crisp outside, and there was no better way to spend an afternoon than cozying up with some tasty beers and enjoying Asheville’s alternative, bohemian culture, even if we’re not cool enough to fit into it.

Asheville brewery tour

A huge number of Asheville’s breweries are within blocks of each other in the South Slope District, so here is the route we took and our favorite things about each brewery.

Disclaimer: though I find beer delicious, I am not a beer expert, so I won’t be speaking pompously of the beer’s aromas, amount of head, or flavor balance because I don’t know a goddamn thing and don’t really care to.

  Burial Beer Company

40 collier ave, asheville, nc 28801.

asheville breweries tour

Brewery atmosphere:  Burial was the first brewery we stopped into and it certainly set the bar high. It is one of the highest rated breweries in North Carolina, so it does get a little crowded, but you won’t even really care with the rustic interior and the good, hipster vibes. Expect to see a few dogs wandering around as well (huge thumbs up to all of Asheville, since I saw a dog or two in several of the breweries we went to. Now if we can just get the rest of the country to get on board). Burial is laid back, offers amazing southern food right next door, and is a truly unique spot to throw back your first beer. Plus, all the beer cans have really cool gothic art on them, and I am all about little details like this.

Beer to try: The Prayer, best enjoyed by beer drinkers who like Belgian style pale ales with tart, apricoty, and somewhat peppery flavors.

Price:  Expect a beer to be around $6-7.

Bottom line:          If you only go to one brewery in Asheville, let this be the one.

  Green Man Brewery

27 buxton ave, asheville, nc 28801.

asheville breweries tour

Brewery atmosphere:  This place was very clean and very modern. It had two levels, with a bar on each level, and a ton of brewing equipment on the first. What is brewing equipment even called? Silver barrel beer things? The walls were painted a calming green, and there were boxes of trivia games upstairs that Meredith and I utilized for about an hour even though we are both horrifically bad at trivia and wildly guessed most of the answers.

Beer to try: Tart Berry Berliner Weisse, best enjoyed by beer drinkers who like sour and fruity beers with a weird violet hue.

Price:  A pint runs around $5.

Bottom Line:          The perfect place for an afternoon beer.

  Twin Leaf Brewery

144 coxe ave, asheville, nc 28801.

asheville breweries tour

Brewery atmosphere:  Twin Leaf was the first brewery we visited that was crowded as fuxk. Mid-afternoon is when the droves of thirsty day drinkers start to swarm the breweries, so be prepared for a long line here. However, the bartenders were incredibly friendly and worked as quickly as possible to get everyone served. There are long, communal tables to sit and drink with friends old and new, industrial decor, as well as ping pong tables and other games along the side. Beer, conversation, and plenty of activities, so you can’t go wrong.

Beer to try:  Dark Matter Oatmeal Stout, best enjoyed by beer drinkers who like rich, fuller-bodied beers with flavors of chocolate, molasses, and coffee.

Price:  A pint runs around $5-6.

Bottom Line:        Probably the cutest brewery we visited, and the easiest to hang out in FOR HOURS (yeah, we were there for hours).

  The Funkatorium

147 coxe ave, asheville, nc 28801.

asheville breweries tour

Brewery atmosphere:  Funkatorium is actually owned by Wicked Weed, and is the East Coast’s first “sour and funky beer dedicated taproom.” Do I know what that means? Heck no, but it does sound like a good reason to check it out. There is a smaller, rustic bar area in front with a huge warehouse of barrels in the back, as well as a stage which I assume is for live music but not at the time we were there (would have been DOPE to hear some live music in a warehouse surrounded by beer barrels, though). Very cool place; its only downfall was that we had to wait outside for about 15 minutes before being allowed in because they were at capacity, but once we went inside it didn’t seem crowded at all.

Beer to try:  Genesis Blonde Sour, best enjoyed by beer drinkers who like fresh, fruity sours, bursting with flavors of pineapple, mango, papaya, and guava. Sour Patch Kids lovers welcome. I went through a phase recently where I ate 5 bags of Sour Patch Kids a week and it was horrible. Not that that is relevant to anyone but my mother, who loves me.

Price:  Each special sour beer is about $5.

Bottom Line:        Really, really, really good beer.

  Hi-Wire Brewing

197 hilliard ave, asheville, nc 28801.

asheville breweries tour

Brewery atmosphere:  Out of all the breweries, this one was my least favorite. I hate to talk bad about anyone or anything (unless it’s in the privacy of my house and no one except my friends and family can hear me, then I am seriously all about it), but I have to be honest. It was very dark inside and extremely loud, and we were not able to find a place to sit. It felt less like a funky, sophisticated brewery and more like a neighborhood dive bar with some barrels in the back. Not that there’s anything wrong with that necessarily . We just didn’t stay for too long. I also think at this point we were starving and tired and in need of some mid-brewery-crawl snacks.

Beer to try:  Really Good Breakfast, best enjoyed by beer drinkers who like a heavier, darker stout. I think I would have really enjoyed sipping on this beer had I not been so in need of food that any heavy beer was bound to make my delicate ass feel like barfing.

Price:  A beer from the tap runs at about $5.

Bottom Line:          At least it is dog friendly, and has some live music.

  Asheville Brewing Company

77 coxe ave, asheville, nc 28801.

asheville breweries tour

Brewery atmosphere:  The Asheville Brewing Company is home to some award-winning beers and is the “most Googled brewery in North Carolina,” according to their website. Who knows if that is true, or if it is for any other reason other than the fact that it has both “Asheville” and “brewing” in its name. This was a great next stop for us, because the beer was making our stomachs start to turn and we needed something to eat. There are three locations, but the one we went to in the South Slope District is their actual brewpub, where all the brewing equipment is held. Since the brewing equipment is all behind the scenes, you need a tour to see it, so this brewery had a restaurant feel to it more than the others. It was really lively and welcoming inside, even if we did have to wait for a table to get any service.

Beer to try:  Perfect Day IPA, best enjoyed by beer drinkers who like citrusy and floral hops. This one was recommended to me by the lovely bartender whose name escapes me but who was the sweetest and coolest woman on the face of this planet.

Price:  Beers are about $5-6.

Bottom Line:          This brewery had the friendliest staff we came across, and lots and lots of hot and tasty apps.

  Bhramari Brewing Company

101 s lexington ave, asheville, nc 28801.

asheville breweries tour

Brewery atmosphere:  Bhramari is a large, newer brewery with several different rooms, as well as an outside patio. The inside is extra hipster and extra chill, and while it was crowded with a lot of people as we stumbled into a booth, the vibes never strayed from highly laid-back and relaxing. The creative and funky decor and beers made for a very enjoyable time. At this point we were about ready to pass out from all the alcohol and we decided to split a lighter beer, which was a nice change of pace from some of the heavier ones we had been drinking.

Beer to try:  Curb Appeal, best enjoyed by beer drinkers who like simple, light, and fresh American lagers.

Price: A pint is about $5.

Bottom Line:          Funky and fun, and I imagine it would have been an excellent spot for day drinking outside.

  Wicked Weed Brewing

91 biltmore ave, asheville, nc 28801.

asheville breweries tour

Brewery atmosphere:  Ah, yes, our final stop on our seemingly endless brewery tour. How is it possible that we only walked for 10 cumulative minutes and saw so many places?? Drank so much?? Spent SO MUCH MONEY?? This is the main location for Wicked Weed brewery, Funkatorium being its other location down the street. It is one of the more popular and more famous breweries in town, so it is often packed. It is loud inside at night, but it is very open so the vibe is actually a lot of fun as opposed to overwhelming and suffocating. There’s also a fire pit outside and plenty of space to hang out if the weather is nice. It was literally snowing while we were there and we sprinted from brewery to brewery to minimize our time in the cold, so we definitely did not get to enjoy that.

Beer to try:  Lunatic Blonde, best enjoyed by beer drinkers who like yeasty, fruity, and spicy blondes with a crisp feel to it.

Price:  Beers are about $4-5.

Bottom Line:          Tons of fun and full of people, and a definite must for any brewery crawl if for nothing else than for its notoriety.

To me a day like the one Meredith and I had is not really about being wasted and making idiots out of ourselves. It’s not even necessarily about the beer. It’s about the experience. Meredith is not a huge beer drinker, but she still enjoyed the unique character of each establishment and was always able to find something she liked (hello, these are  breweries . They specialize in making tons of different beers, and lots of them have ciders too!).

You’d be remiss to miss an opportunity to hit at least a couple of Asheville’s breweries on your visit. They don’t call this town Beer City, USA for nothing!

7 Rooftop Bars with the Best Drinks (and Views) of Asheville

Gaze out at the blue ridge mountains and art deco skyline from behind your chilled martini glass..

Whether you want to socialize with friends or enjoy the mountain views, Asheville bars like Social Lounge are worth visiting.

After a day hiking some of the enchanting trails of Pisgah National Forest or enjoying a leisurely drive along the Blue Ridge Parkway , head back to Asheville to experience the mountains in a whole different way—as a scenic backdrop at one of the city’s many atmospheric rooftop bars. Asheville’s skyline is also no slouch, as it includes the art deco Asheville City Hall and the neo-Gothic Jackson Building, each an architectural marvel. The following high-in-the-sky watering holes offer a front-row seat for both views.

Left image shows empty tables and chairs on a terrace; right photo shows people grabbing food from plates on a table.

For incredible mountainous landscape views, head to the Montford.

Montford Rooftop Bar

  • Best for: An afternoon drink
  • Where to find it: 199 Haywood Street in the Hyatt Place Hotel
  • Neighborhood: Downtown Asheville

With nothing but a wall of glass rising up between patrons and the city below at the edge of this eighth-floor rooftop, you might experience a bit of vertigo—especially when combined with a potent and delicious Montford Mule, a signature cocktail made with Salamander vodka, the spiced-honey Krupnikas liqueur, ginger beer, and a squeeze of lime. Pro tip for day-drinkers: Bring sunblock and shades to really enjoy the Montford ’s direct afternoon summer sun.

The Observatory

  • Best for: An upscale evening
  • Where to find it: 68 Patton Avenue in the Restoration Hotel

Asheville’s Drum Circle —featuring a collection of beat-keepers, dancers, and Hula-Hoopers—has been taking place every Friday at 6 p.m. in Pritchard Park for nearly 25 years. While it gets a bit crowded, Observatory goers can elevate their experience by watching and listening to the scene from above the fray. The bar is a fine spot for a romantic evening, special celebration, or even just a drink for one on every other night of the week, too. While the staff welcomes everyone and says there’s no official dress code, this is one place where your trail-to-town outfit might leave you feeling a little underdressed.

Antidote at Chemist Spirits

  • Best for: Craft cocktail lovers
  • Where to find it: 151 Coxe Avenue
  • Neighborhood: South Slope

Many guests have never made it to the rooftop at this establishment —because of the appealing below-deck ambiance. But do pull yourself away from the 1900s apothecary-inspired bar on the first floor because the rooftop is worth it. Trust us. The partially covered rooftop lounge overlooks the popular South Slope neighborhood and provides the perfect backdrop for sipping a flight of the handmade, locally sourced and inspired, award-winning spirits like the Barrel Rested Gin or Biltmore Single Malt Whiskey. It’s also an ideal vantage point for peeping the annual Mardi Gras parade and a fine place to people-watch on any warm evening. The cocktails are among the finest around, made with a precision that makes the place stand out in a beer-obsessed town.

Capella on 9

  • Best for: All-around vibe
  • Where to find it: 10 Broadway Street in the AC Hotel Downtown Asheville

Asheville Rooftop Bar Tours founder and owner Kaye Bentley has arguably spent more time canvassing best buzzed views than anyone else in the city. She made it her job back in 2018, when she combined a love of gorgeous Asheville views with history and a few thoughtfully crafted cocktails, which vary from spot to spot (and also include nonalcoholic options). She spun it all into what is now one of the most beloved experiences in town. So it’s no small thing when she highlights Capella on 9 for having the best ambiance in the game. “At Capella, you can enjoy two distinct areas for rooftop views with spacious outdoor seating and see local art on display,” she says. And if you’re feeling peckish, she adds, “They have a great tapas-style menu.”

Woman shaking a mixer at the bar across the counter from another woman.

The Social Lounge is one of Asheville’s rooftop bars that can be enjoyed year-round.

Social Lounge

  • Best for: Intimate evenings and live DJ sets
  • Where to find it: 29 Broadway Street

This place is of two minds: Early in the evening, the small, upscale, loved-by-locals space makes it the perfect incubator for romance. On weekends, the rooftop tables get cleared away to make way for a dance floor, which gets packed with folks grooving to the live set from a local DJ. The rooftop is covered and heated during the chilly months; when it gets balmy in warmer weather, the roll-up doors open and the fans come on, so the party never has to stop.

Hemingway’s Cuba Rooftop Restaurant & Bar

  • Best for: Foodies and large groups
  • Where to find it: 15 Page Avenue in the Cambria Hotel

Share a couple of small plates—we recommend the ceviche mixto and the yuca frita with garlic aioli—at this Cuban-inspired rooftop hot spot where you can pair your food with an exquisite cocktail. A shining example is the #Hemingwayssunset, a blend of Bacardi Silver, blackberry puree, lime juice, simple syrup, mint, and soda water, which comes with a side of sunglasses. When it comes to rooftop eats, this is Bentley’s go-to.

The Roof at the Radical

  • Best for: Golden river sunset views
  • Where to find it: 95 Roberts Street in the Radical Hotel
  • Neighborhood: River Arts District

Atop the newest hotel in town is an alfresco drinking den that peers down on the French Broad River and the heart of the River Arts District. “Its open-air bar is a great way to relax and soak in the collective energy and creativity of the Arts District from a bird’s-eye view,” says Bentley. At sunset the river turns golden, dotted with specks that are people floating along on inner tubes and kayaks. The Radical’s clever use of outdoor furniture creates pockets of intimacy centered around firepits in a space that feels both laid-back and modern. And its 3 p.m. start time on Fridays and Saturdays makes this a solid afternoon-cocktail headquarters (say yes to its 3 Day Weekend Bourbon).

Luke Combs Talks Stadium Tour, Dream Touring Partners, New Tour Merch: Exclusive

L uke Combs launched his 2024 “Growin’ Up and Gettin’ Old” tour earlier this month and is headlining back-to-back stadium shows in Buffalo, New York, this weekend. Combs said concertgoers can “expect more of the same” on this tour – and he doesn’t mean to make it sound boring.

“It’s just who I am,” Combs told American Songwriter. It will be me, my guitar, and my band. We’ll be playing the hits the folks want to hear as well as some newer stuff. Nothing fancy, just the music doing the talking as usual.”

Combs is planning two shows per city and plans to give them a different feeling each night by varying opening acts and his setlist. He’ll do VIP Meet & Greets, pre-show tailgates on Saturdays and add fresh songs to his set that he didn’t play last year.

When writing new songs, he anticipates the audience and imagines how they’ll react to each element – sonic and visual.

“I feel like if I can create a song that has great lyrics, an awesome visual storyline and a great melody, the fans will love it – and that’s what most important,” Combs said.

But, he doesn’t take it for granted. Combs, who spent much of his youth growing up in Asheville, North Carolina, knows that most artists don’t have the opportunity to mount stadium tours, much less play back-to-back nights.

“I feel very blessed to be in this position and have this opportunity,” he said. I don’t take it for granted, and neither does my crew and team. But I do get inspired by other artists I follow who I’ve seen play stadium shows. There are a lot of great acts out there, and I try to lean on cool things they do when possible.”

Luke Combs Wants to Tour With Ed Sheeran and Post Malone

Combs doesn’t namecheck the artists who inspire him, but he does know he’d love to tour with his friend Ed Sheeran. He thinks Post Malone would be fun to share a stage with, too. He’s also convinced his former self – the young man who worked his way from bar bouncer to singer while he was in college in North Carolina – would be impressed with how far he’s made it in the music industry.

“There’s definitely still a little bit of that guy left in me,” Combs said. “There’s still the passion; there’s still that fire inside of me that you’ll see on stage every night, too.”

Now, he’s teaming with Miller Lite, which he calls his “go-to beer for forever,” to elevate the Luke Combs’ concert experience even more for fans. The brand is the beer sponsor for his current tour and asked if they could make him a Miller Lite trucker hat. Combs agreed, and now the hat – which is available beginning April 17 at shop.millerlite.com – could double as entry to a show.

When fans buy The Miller Lite x Luke Combs Trucker, they’ll be entered to win two tickets to a Luke Combs concert and more goodies from the Combs’ camp.

“I’ve been singing about beer for a while now,” Combs said. “The hats themselves are great. We were able to add elements of my album art and Miller Lite’s design throughout, and they turned out really cool. But more than that, I love that they give my fans the opportunity to do my favorite things – enjoy music with a good beer in hand. That’s what this is all about and that’s why I go on tour – to bring good music and good times to people.”

Brewery, wellness studios to open as one-stop neighborhood hangout in Asheville

asheville breweries tour

ASHEVILLE - A local couple is on the path to bringing fitness and entertainment to the Asheville community at a hybrid brewery-wellness center.

This month, Josh and Shannon Brewer acquired the keys to the former Down Dog dog park, bar and yoga studio that closed last spring at 51 Sweeten Creek Road. The Brewers will transform the newly leased commercial building into a craft beer taproom with wellness studios.

Josh Brewer, who started as a home brewer, sought a place to open a brewery in Asheville after years as a professional brewer in Eastern North Carolina. Shannon Brewer recognized an opportunity to share her expertise in wellness with an audience in a joint venture.

“I said, ‘Why don’t we do a wellness studio and brewery together and it’s like whole-person wellness ― it’s mental, physical, spiritual, social and community — everything all together,” Shannon Brewer said.

The months-long renovation plan to upgrade the nearly 4,000-square-foot facility, spruce up the patio, and get beer production churning is intended to be complete in time for a November/December opening.

The entrepreneurs envision a place for the community to gather and find inner peace by participating in a yoga class or relaxing with a cold craft beer.

Josh Brewer said he imagines Brewwell as a local hangout due to its placement in the Sweeten Creek neighborhood surrounded by other local commercial businesses, restaurants and breweries like Hillman Beer and 7 Clans Brewing.

“It’s an area that has some strong established businesses and hangout places here,” Shannon Brewer said. “It’s growing and evolving, and I think we’ll continue to see it grow and evolve so it’s exciting to be getting in on the earlier stage of the second wave.”

The fitness factor

A receptionist will greet guests entering the front of the building seeking to spend time on the wellness side of the business.

The two existing studios will host regularly scheduled classes like yoga, Pilates and meditation. The workshops and seminars may include practices like sound healing and reiki, and specially scheduled one-to-two times per month.

“Whatever people are interested in,” Shannon Brewer said. “I’m hoping to curate a collection of opportunities for people to explore and find the thing that sparks their element of interest.”

Instructors and other professionals will be contracted to lead the sessions.

The brewing side

The design theme is one Shannon Brewer has dubbed “Scandinavian boho industrial” as it will have a clean-line modern style with metal trusses overhead, natural materials like wood, terracotta and plant accents, and a color scheme of black and white contrasting with the copper beer kegs.

The taproom will be in the back half of the building and offer table, bar and lounge seating.

The existing bar will receive a facelift and drywall will be installed on the back wall from which the beverage menu will hang.

Nearly 600 square feet will be partitioned off the area to create a designated beer production space.

Six copper tanks will hang above the bar. The perks of the unique beer brewing and draft method are that it will save floor space for operations and storage while getting beer directly to guests in the taproom. Also, it will be easy to clean as it uses replaceable bags in the tanks.

Josh Brewer, said the “tank beer” set-up is popular in Europe, but Brewwell will be the third brewery in the U.S. to use them.

Beer is funneled from the brewery to the copper kegs through ceiling piping, and then a draft line will run from the kegs to the back wall of the taps.

Several additional taps behind the bar will be reserved for local guest beverage companies providing options like Prosecco, wine, kombucha and sour beers. Non-alcoholic options on the menu will include zero-proof beer, fruit smoothies, handcrafted sodas and sparkling teas.

Josh Brewer plans to introduce the brewery by releasing Czech-style pilsners and dark beers, a German-style Helles, an English-style pale ale, a nitrogen stout and Indian pale ales.

Light snacks will be on the menu, but visitors will be encouraged to patronize guest food trucks, pop-up vendors and neighborhood restaurants.

Brewwell’s creekside patio

The patio will offer covered and open spaces and an elevated section that will back up to Sweeten Creek.

Enhancements will include a new awning and seating.

The fencing will be changed to create a more open and inviting social space.

“We want it to feel community-oriented. People can come in and be themselves, relax and hang out. It's a little bit more of an open feeling,” Shannon Brewer said.

The patio and taproom will be accessible from the side parking lot. A window at the back of the building will be replaced by a door for an additional entryway between the taproom and the patio.

The parking lot at Brewwell is limited to about a half-dozen spaces but additional parking will be available across the street.

Although the venue will no longer be a dedicated dog park, dogs will be welcomed at the brewery but in a traditional sense on a leash and on the patio with their human counterpart.

Where: 51 Sweeten Creek Road, Asheville.

Opening: Tentatively November/December 2024.
