A day trip from Athens to Ancient Olympia might not be one of the first activities that come to mind when visiting the Greek capital.

However, even though Ancient Olympia is undoubtedly a less popular destination among some international travelers, it really is a must for those that are intrigued by the rich history of ancient Greece and who want to witness one of the most extraordinary historical places.

Located on the western coast of the Peloponnese, Ancient Olympia is the birthplace of the Olympic Games, the location where this tradition came to life nearly three thousand years ago.

Its historical significance and marvelous natural beauty will make a day trip from Athens to Olympia one to remember from your next vacation in Greece.

What Is Olympia Greece Famous For?

Olympia is most known for being the birthplace of the Olympic Games and the home of the famous stadium where this longstanding tradition made its first appearance.

The Olympic Games, however, were much more than an athletic competition. Ancient Olympia was one of the most important religious sanctuaries in the country.

In fact, the Olympic Games themselves were part of broader religious festivities that were held in honor of Zeus and Pelops – the mythical king of Olympia.

Pilgrims would visit ancient Olympia every four years to worship the Olympian Gods and watch the games. It is said that for the duration of the festivals, the wars and conflicts throughout Greece would cease to respect what was later named the Olympic peace.

Getting to Ancient Olympia from Athens

The Peloponnese region generally is not very well connected with mainland Greece.

Nevertheless, this should not prevent you from planning an amazing day trip from Athens to Olympia.

Below, you will find all the information you need on how to get to Olympia and our recommendations for the best way to do it.

How Far Is Ancient Olympia From Athens?

The distance between the city center of Athens and the town of Olympia is approximately 300 kilometers (or about 186 miles ).

Getting from downtown Athens to ancient Olympia by car would take about 3,5 hours, depending on the traffic.

There are two ways you can reach Ancient Olympia from Athens by car.

  • The highway connects Athens, Corinth, Patra, and Pyrgos. Olympia is located very close to Pyrgos and you will have no problems getting there by following the signs. This one is the fastest route. The highway is relatively well-maintained. The journey will take around 3,5 hours .
  • The highway connects Athens, Corinth, Tripoli, and Arcadia. If you choose to take this route, make sure to follow the signs and exit the highway just before you reach the end. This option will take you on a longer journey (about 5 hours ) since the road is not great, but the scenic views you can witness along the way are definitely worth it. If you have the time, you can also stop at Epidaurus and Mycenae.

Athens to Olympia by Bus

You can also travel from Athens to Ancient Olympia by bus. Local buses (or KTELs as they are called in Greece) depart from the bus terminal named Kifissos.

Unfortunately, Kifissos is not very easy to reach. You must take a taxi or a bus from the city center. Read our detailed guide on how to get around Athens to learn more.

Buses between Athens and Olympia usually run twice a day (yet we advise that you check the schedules beforehand) and the trip lasts a little less than 6 hours .

2 day tour (private tour), athens - delphi - olympia - corinth canal - athens.

This is a tour for those of you that do not have much time to spend out of Athens but still want to see as many of the Greek highlights as possible.

Combine two of the most famous Greek archaeological sites, Delphi and Olympia, and drive through some of the most picturesque and historical parts of the Greek mainland and the Peloponnese.

Day 1 : Your private vehicle and driver will come and pick you up from your hotel in Athens and you will start driving north out of it. That is where the area of Marathon still lies and where one of the most important battles of the Medic wars was fought in 490 BC. On your way to Delphi your driver will comment about the most important places you will drive by. Once in Delphi, you will meet your tour guide who will offer you locally a guided tour of the museum in which one can see among other archeological treasures, the unique bronze statue of the charioteer. Then proceed though the sacred way to the Athenian treasury, the stoa of Athens, the temple of Apollo, where the oracle was and the theater. On your way down you can stop and drink water from the ancient sacred Kastalia spring, where all visitors would get purified, before entering the Oracle. Nearby lies the ancient gymnasium and the site of Athena Pronaia. After your guided tour in Delphi, you will have lunch in Delphi before starting your drive towards Olympia. As you descend from mount Parnassus, you will pass the largest olive grove in Greece next to the city of Itea. Then you will continue your drive along the Corinthian gulf coastline and reach the historical city of Nafpaktos where you can have a short coffee stop. In the waters of Nafpaktos the famous battle of Lepando between the fleets of the Ottoman Turks and the Christian Alliance was fought. There you can admire the well preserved Venetian fortification of the small port and the statue of the famous Cervantes, author of Don Quixote, who also participated in the battle there. Continuing your drive you will cross one of the largest suspension bridges in the world that connects the mainland to the Peloponnese and then driving through the large and lush valley of Elis you will get to Olympia, where you will spend the night.

Day 2 : After breakfast, you will finally be able to admire the unique and serene landscape of the Olympia land, surrounded by several hills, filled with pine trees. Then you will enjoy a private guided tour through the site-birthplace of the Olympic Games, where still lie the ancient gymnasiums, the temple of Zeus and Hera and the stadium. A few meters away from the site is where you will visit one of the most impressive museums in the world, since it houses the originals pediments of the temple of Zeus and Hermes by Praxiteles. After your tour you will have a short stop at the modern town of Olympia and then continue your journey back to Athens. The drive to Athens is approximately 4 hours through the highway and the mountains to the other side of the Peloponnese. If you do not mind driving very windy roads you can also take the old road across so that you make stops by the picturesque mountain villages like Lagadia or Dimitsana, for coffee or lunch. On the way a stop by the famous Corinthian Canal or else Isthmus that unites the Ionian and the Aegean Sea will be made, for pictures and coffee. The Corinth Canal is approximately one hour drive from Athens where you will be dropped off at your hotel or the airport.

After our 30minute stop on the Corinth Canal and of course after taking our time to snap some breathtaking pictures and get some rest on the nearby rest area café, your chauffer will drive you through the winding country local roads through olive trees, vineyards and orange trees that grow in abundance in the area. It will feel as if you stepped into the scenery that one sees only in artistic movies and documentaries.

We will continue to Olympia. Lay back and enjoy the scenic drive till we will reach Olympia.

After approx. 3,5hrs driving we reach Olympia. At this point we suggest a break fro a lunch in Olympia. After this you can spend about 3hrs in the Archaeological Site of Olympia and its Museum.

Ancient Olympia is a place whose beauty and value cannot be fathomed by words and descriptions. It is the place that has been admittedly the most glorified and worshiped sanctuary of the ancient world, dedicated to the father of humans and the Gods, Zeus. The first Olympic Games were held here in honor of God Zeus back in 776B.C. and has become nowadays an international athletic celebration, that exceeds borders and nationalities, begins in this exact place every four years.

You will be able to see the ruins of the Temple of Zeus, of the Temple of Hera, the Stadium with its spectacular capacity of 45000 people. Take your time to explore the ruins of the ancient facilities on site and then continue to the Museum. Finally the Aarchaeological Museum, that constitutes the last section of our tour, is filled with remarkable exhibits, including the famous statue of Hermes attributed to the sculptor Praxiteles.

Your chauffeur will be waiting for you to drive you to your accommodation in Olympia. Overnight in Olympia.

Early in the morning we will depart from Olympia to Delphi. On our way to Delphi we will have a stop at the magnificent town of Nafpaktos. After approx. 3,5 hrs and the wonderful scenic ride, a little before we arrive to Delphi we suggest a break for a lunch. Our break will revitalize us and get us prepared for our visit to the navel of the world, the Archaeological Site of Delphi.

Delphi used to be the most important sanctuary dedicated to God Apollo, the place through which the God was believed to be offering his Oracles through Pythia, the Priestess of the Sanctuary, who was always eager to give her advice to everyone from mere citizens to mythical heroes and legendary leaders of cities.

The perpetual inner need of mortals and the endless effort of the human race to foresee and learn about the future but also have the blessing of the Gods gradually converted the Oracle of Delphi into an important information and cultural center and allowed it to collect all the offerings that the cities were sending as donations, which resulted in the creation of a local treasury of immense value.

You will see the Temple of Apollo but also explore the sanctuary of Athena Pronaia with the renowned Tholos, The Castalia Spring, the Temple of Apollo, the Great ancient theater, the stadium, where the so called Pythian Games and the treasuries that the city state erected in order to express the gratitude towards the Gods.

Inside the archaeological museum of Delphi which is our next stop you will have the chance to admire many important ancient Greek artifacts from the excavations at Delphi, including the famous statue of Antinoos and the unique bronze statue of the Charioteer dated from 475 B.C. You can spend approx. 3hrs on the Site and its Museum. After our visit to the Site we will depart to Athens. On the way we would never miss to stop at the beautiful traditional and picturesque village of Arachova, where you can enjoy a nice stroll in the village.

Description

Description of the tour in peloponnese and central greece, day 1: athens, corinth canal, ancient olympia.

An early wake-up call will signal the beginning of the three days tour. Starting from Athens, the driver will drive you along the beautiful coastal road from Attica towards Corinth Canal , where you will enjoy a short stop to admire the gorgeous views of the sea and of course take some pictures to show back home.

The Olympic flame in Olympia

After a shortstop, the tour will continue towards one of the highlights of this tour, Olympia . Sixteen kilometers from the Ionian Sea in the western Peloponnese to the point where the rivers Alpheus and Kladios meet, lies the ancient sanctuary of Olympia and the site of the ancient Olympic Games . In the early years, the region belonged to the city-state of Elia.

Till today, Olympia becomes the epicenter of interest every four years, during the Olympic years, because the Olympic Flame is born here, celebrating its true origins. The Altis, the sanctuary of God Zeus, and the original Olympic stadiums of the Games are also located here. Overnight in Olympia.

Late in the afternoon, the tour continues from Olympia driving northward. You will have a short cruise (20 min) overlooking the largest and most impressive bridge in Greece that connects the Peloponnese Peninsula with Central Greece, the bridge of Rio – Antirio .

Soon you will find yourself driving along the coastal road of Itea bay, passing by Nafpaktos, Itea, and Galaxidi, before arriving at Delphi, the second highlight of this tour.

Overnight in Olympia or Delphi

Day 2: Delphi, Kalambaka, Kastraki, Meteora

delphi greece

The second day of the tour starts early in the morning visiting the sacred Delphi , which is known due to the sanctuary of God Apollo and the famous Oracle that gathered people from all over the known world in the ancient Era.

You will visit the archaeological site of Delphi, the Athenian treasury, the Temple of Apollo, and the museum of Delphi, with an array of significant artifacts and findings, including the unique bronze Charioteer or Eniochos.

After the sightseeing tour, it’s time for a tasteful lunch at the nearby Greek restaurant of Delphi, with a picturesque mountainous view that lies at the feet of Mt Parnassus.

After lunch, the tour continues towards Kalambaka and Meteora. You will reach Kalambaka , the town at the feet of Meteora late in the afternoon.

Overnight in Kalambaka or Kastraki.

Day 3: Meteora, Kalambaka, Trikala, Karditsa, Lamia, Athens

meteora rocks and monasteries

The third day of the tour starts with a visit to the breathtaking Byzantine Monasteries of Meteora , with their long history. Meteora Monasteries comprise the second most important complex of Monasteries after Athos but stand out because they are built as if suspending from the huge rock formations in the heart of Thessaly. Keep in mind that not all monasteries are open to visitors every day, but you will be informed of the open monasteries in advance.

After the visit to the Monasteries and lunch on the way, you will pass by Thermopylae , the battlefield of King Leonidas and his 300 men, and a series of important and developed towns in the Thessalian plain.

The tour will slowly bring you back towards Athens, passing by other important towns of Thessaly, such as Trikala and Karditsa. You will reach Athens late in the afternoon, where your private tour ends.

HOW TO GET TO OLYMPIA GREECE AND WHAT TO SEE

how to get to Olympia

Nestled in the tranquil landscape of the western Peloponnese peninsula in Greece lies a place that echoes an illustrious past—the Archaeological Site of Olympia. Ancient Olympia was one of the most significant sanctuaries of ancient Greece, and hosted the Olympic Games every four years from 776 BC to 393 AD. Today, it is a UNESCO World Heritage site visited by millions who come to explore the ruins, and experience the rich history and Greek culture.

What is Ancient Olympia?

The Archaeological Site of Olympia is one of Greece’s most significant cultural and historical landmarks. It started a ritual that is still observed globally today with the Modern Olympics, where the worlds best athletes compete for the most coveted titles in their field.

Its origins can be traced back to prehistoric times, with evidence of human habitation in the region dating back to the Neolithic period, around 4000 BCE. The area was also considered a religious and cult centre during ancient times, focusing on worshipping gods like Zeus and Hera. However, its association with the Olympic Games has etched its place indelibly in history.

The first recorded Olympic Games were held in 776 BCE, marking the beginning of a remarkable tradition that would endure for over a thousand years. These games, held every four years, became a significant cultural and athletic event, attracting participants and spectators from across Greece and beyond.

Olympia was not only renowned for its athletic competitions but also for its religious significance. The sanctuary of Olympia was considered sacred, dedicated primarily to Zeus, the king of the gods, and Hera, his wife. Held in honour of him, The Olympic Games also served as a means of religious devotion and were accompanied by sacrifices, rituals, and ceremonies.

Over time, the Olympic Games gained pan-Hellenic status, transcending local significance to become an event that united the Greek city-states. A truce known as ekecheiria was observed during the games, ensuring safe travel and participation, even during times of conflict.

Architecturally, Olympia underwent significant development and embellishment. Majestic structures adorned the sanctuary, including temples, treasuries, altars, and stadiums. Among them, the Temple of Zeus stood out as an architectural marvel, housing the renowned statue of Zeus, sculpted by Phidias, considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The Temple of Hera, another prominent structure, reflected the religious devotion of the ancient Greeks.

Olympia continued to thrive during the Roman period. The games maintained their popularity, and Roman emperors often contributed to the enhancement and expansion of the site. However, with the decline of the Roman Empire, the games gradually lost their prominence, and Olympia entered a period of decline. It remained buried and forgotten for centuries until its rediscovery in the 18th century.

Today, the Archaeological Site of Olympia stands as a captivating testament to the grandeur and achievements of ancient Greece. Its ruins offer a glimpse into the past’s religious, athletic, and artistic traditions.

Highlights of Olympia

Temple of zeus.

The Temple of Zeus is a testament to ancient Greek architectural prowess and religious devotion. Constructed in the 5th century BCE, this majestic temple was dedicated to Zeus , the king of the gods in Greek mythology.

It was an impressive Doric structure characterised by its sheer size and grandeur, featuring imposing columns that rose to a height of over 13 metres which created a sense of awe and reverence.

The temple’s eastern pediment depicted the chariot race between Pelops and Oenomaus, while the western pediment showcased the battle between the Lapiths and the Centaurs, both sculpted with remarkable artistry.

The temple’s most prominent feature was the colossal statue of Zeus, sculpted by Phidias, which once resided inside its sacred chambers. This masterpiece stood over 12 meters tall and was made of gold and ivory, depicting Zeus seated on a throne, holding a sceptre and a figure of Nike, the goddess of victory. Regrettably, this awe-inspiring statue no longer survives today.

Despite its grandeur, the Temple of Zeus suffered damage over the centuries, including earthquakes and fires. However, its ruins still convey a sense of the temple’s former magnificence, allowing visitors to appreciate its architectural ingenuity and religious significance for the ancient Greeks.

Temple of Hera

Built around the 7th century BCE, The Temple of Hera is a remarkable ancient Greek temple dedicated to the goddess Hera.

Following the Doric architectural style, it stands as a testament to the religious significance of the sanctuary and the architectural achievements of the time.

The temple is characterised by its sturdy columns and simplicity and was peripteral, with a single row of columns surrounding it.

The temple is one of the oldest Doric temples in Greece and played a vital role in religious ceremonies and offerings dedicated to Hera, (the queen of the gods in Greek mythology and the protector of marriage and childbirth). Its stunning design comprised six columns on its façade and sixteen on the sides, which created a harmonious and balanced structure.

Inside the temple was an impressive cult statue of Hera. It represented the goddess and served as the focal point of worship.

Visitors can explore the remnants of this sacred structure and marvel at its historical significance.

Adjacent to it, you’ll see the Philippeion, an exquisite circular monument built by Philip II of Macedon. It commemorates his victory in the Olympic Games and enhances the historical and architectural significance of the area.

Ancient Stadium

The ancient Olympia Stadium was the venue for the renowned Olympic Games.

It was constructed in the 5th century BCE and is one of the world’s most immense sites of cultural and historical significance.

The stadium is a rectangular space surrounded by sloping grassy embankments, offering seating for thousands of spectators who eagerly gathered to witness the sporting events. The original track, made of packed earth and measuring about 192 metres in length, still exists today, allowing visitors to walk in the footsteps of ancient athletes.

During the Olympic Games, the stadium came alive with intense athletic competition, including foot races, chariot races, and combat sports. Athletes from various city-states gathered to showcase their physical prowess and compete for glory and honour. You can almost hear the ancient spectator’s cheers and roars from within the remains of this historic venue!

Walking around the stadium, surrounded by the remnants of the spectator seating, offers a profound connection to the ancient past and a deep appreciation for the enduring legacy of athletic competition and human achievement.

athens to olympia tour

The Palaestra was a vital part of the ancient Greek athletic complex.

A rectangular exercise area, it embodied the significance of physical education and athletic competition in ancient Greek society, serving as a training ground for athletes preparing for the Olympic Games.

It consisted of a central courtyard surrounded by a covered walkway known as a peristyle. It also had a courtyard that provided ample space for wrestling, boxing, and jumping.

At the same time, the peristyle offered shaded areas for athletes to rest and engage in intellectual and philosophical discussions. (Can you imagine Usain Boult and Yohan Blake doing that?)

The Palaestra served not only as a training ground but also as a social hub, fostering camaraderie and the exchange of ideas among athletes. It was a place where athletes honed their skills, tested their mettle, and learned from one another, contributing to the overall development of the individual and the community.

The architecture of the Palaestra combined practicality with aesthetic appeal. The columns and decorative elements showcased the craftsmanship and attention to detail characteristic of ancient Greek architecture. While the serene ambience of the space, shaded by the surrounding colonnade, created an environment conducive to focused training and contemplation.

Exploring the remains of the Palaestra at the Archaeological Site of Olympia allows visitors to envision the vibrant atmosphere that once filled this space.

Archaeological Museum of Olympia

The Archaeological Museum of Olympia resides next to the Archaeological Site of Olympia. Possessing a treasure trove of ancient artefacts, a visit here provides a comprehensive understanding of the historical and cultural significance of Olympia.

The museum houses an extensive collection of artefacts discovered within the Olympia archaeological site and its surroundings. These artefacts span from prehistoric times to the Roman era and include sculptures, statues, pottery, metalwork, and other archaeological finds that shed light on various aspects of ancient Greek life.

One of the museum’s notable highlights is the Hermes of Praxiteles, a renowned sculpture representing the messenger god Hermes. This masterpiece showcases the skilful craftsmanship and artistic excellence of the ancient Greeks.

Additionally, the Pedimental Sculptures of the Temple of Zeus, which depict mythological scenes, offer a glimpse into the artistic splendour of the ancient sanctuary.

Where to stay in Olympia Greece

The town of Olympia is small and has only a handful of hotels but they are good value and very pleasant. It’s a charming little town that has somehow retained an air of authenticity despite its rockstar attraction.

We recommend Leonidaion, a charming, modernized guesthouse in town with great family service.

A good budget alternative is   Hotel Kronio , which is probably the closest to the Museum and Historical site whilst   Hotel Europa   is great for families and groups with a huge swimming pool.

  • Discover local Greek life in the South , through different generations of people who open their homes and workshops .

Day 1: Mycenae & Nafplio tour

The fabled Homeric city of Mycenae , a UNESCO World Heritage Site and capital of one of the oldest civilizations in the world, is where you’ll start your adventure into antiquity, by walking under the famed Lion Gate into ruins that are part history, part myth. While you’ll be literally walking in the steps of King Agamemnon, your expert guide will reveal every story, myth and legend that hide behind the imposing ruins of the citadel.

After visiting the site of Mycenae, you'll then head towards the historic seaside city of Nafplio, where a scrumptious lunch awaits you in one of the best tavernas in town only locals know of. This romantic, picturesque town, the old capital of modern Greece, is crowned by Venetian fortifications and embraced by a beautiful seafront.

You'll visit local craftspeople, including a potter and a weaver at work in their workshops, to discover how they carry the traditions of the past into the present. You’ll also see a number of other local crafts and goods and a confectionery where the traditional Greek almond cookies are still made the way they were generations ago.

From Nafplio, your trip will take you through the beautiful Peloponnesian countryside towards the site of ancient Olympia ; along the way, you’ll stop at a beautiful honey farm , where you'll learn the secrets of the world-renowned Greek honey firsthand from a working beekeeper. You’ll also see her mother making “diples”, a traditional dessert drizzled with honey, cooked just for you in an outdoor kitchen under the trees! You'll spend the night near Olympia.

Day 2: Ancient Olympia tour

The next morning belongs to ancient Olympia , the most important athletic, religious and political centre of the ancient Greek world. Here, your top-rated guide will let you into the secrets of the temples, the training area and the original stadium where the Olympic Games were born, and held for centuries. The visit of the archaeological Museum of Olympia is also not to be missed, as it holds world-class masterpieces and treasures like the breathtaking statue of Hermes and the infant Dionysus, by Praxiteles .

Children are always welcome on our ancient Olympia tour, and in case we have little participants, we'll have the opportunity to take part in some hands-on practice at archaeology, with an excavation simulation that is both educative and fun! Alternatively, we'll leave ancient Olympia to visit a nearby trend-setting olive farmer to discover revolutionary new techniques in homeodynamic olive oil production and to sample some incredibly tasting and top-quality olive oil.

Then it’s time for an unusual off-road adventure and an exciting lunch break: after an easy guided walk through a stunning gorge , you'll discover two impressive waterfalls where your lunch will be served, right by the river picnic-style, with homemade local specialties cooked by local women. For the bravest among you, you’ll have the chance to swim there too!

After leaving the waterfalls, you’ll travel to one of the most picturesque seaside villages of Greece, Galaxidi , to spend the night in a charmingly restored 19th century ‘arhontiko’ mansion with an enchanting courtyard.

Day 3: Delphi tour

We'll start the day tour of Delphi and the area by exploring Galaxidi, once a thriving port and home to some of the most powerful families of seafaring merchants in the Mediterranean. Then we'll head to the regional capital of Amfissa , where Greece's last handmade bell-maker will show you how livestock bells have been forged by hand in his family for generations; then you'll stroll through the cobbled streets of the old leather-tanning district. Here, in one of the last remaining tanning workshops in Europe, you’ll see what a tanner’s working life was, almost unchanged from a century ago up to today, and listen to the tanners’ stories – father and son – to understand what life is like today in this part of Greece.

You’ll then enjoy your lunch under the shade of the large plane tree in the town square, where you will taste local delicacies prepared for you by women of the village.

After lunch, we’re off to visit the site of Delphi , sacred oracle of the ancient Gods. There you’ll marvel at the beauty of the ancient monuments, including the ruins of the Temple of Apollo and the Athenian Treasury . You’ll have plenty of time to soak in the magical scenery, after which it’ll be time to visit the Delphi museum , where some of the finest examples of ancient Greek art are on display – including the world-famous bronze statue of the Charioteer of Delphi .

The drive back to Athens concludes your Grand Tour of ancient Greece’s most celebrated landmarks, places of beauty and power, whose cultural influences are still felt today.

What is the Route for the 2024 Paris Olympic and Paralympic Torch Relays?

The Olympic and Paralympic Torch Relays will serve as a spectacular show of teamwork and culture as the iconic Olympic flame travels through 65 French regions and territories before arriving in Paris.

athens to olympia tour

During the spring and early summer, the Olympic flame will be illuminating numerous regions across France and their overseas territories as part of the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Torch Relays.

The torch was lit on Monday, April 15 in Olympia, Greece, in commemoration of the Olympics' historical birthplace. It then began its journey to Athens to board the “Belem,” a three-masted ship that will carry the torch across the ocean to land in its first stop in France – Marseille.

From May 8 to July 26, thousands of people – from Olympic athletes to volunteers – will carry the torch through more than 400 towns across France and French territories until its last stop in Paris for the Olympic Games Opening Ceremony.

The history of the Olympic Torch Relay

The first torch relay took place for the 1936 Summer Games in Berlin, when the Olympic flame was first carried from Olympia to the German host city, according to the International Olympic Committee .

The torch is traditionally kindled in Olympia, in an event organized by the Hellenic Olympic Committee. The 2024 Olympic Torch Relay will have 600 torchbearers carry the flame across 41 towns in Greece until it reaches the Panathenaic Stadium in Athens, where it will cross the Mediterranean to start its epic journey around France, according to Paris 2024 .

Every relay is an opportunity to celebrate the history and culture of the host nation. This year, the Olympic Flame will journey past iconic sites, such as the Lascaux caves, home to hundreds of prehistoric paintings believed to date back up to 17,000 years ago; the archaeological site at Alesia, where Julius Caesar defeated the Gauls in 52 B.C.E; the palace at Versailles, built by King Louis XIV in the 1660s.

Torchbearers will also travel across the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific oceans to reach six French territories: French Guiana, New Caledonia, Réunion, French Polynesia, Guadeloupe, and Martinique.

Who will be participating?

A selected 10,000 torchbearers will participate in the Olympic Torch Relay, consisting of 69 team relays of 24 people. Each team is made up of champions, everyday athletes, volunteers, referees, coaches and more, who are members of the 34 Olympic and Paralympic Federations, according to Paris 2024 .

Stephanos Ntouskos, who won an individual gold medal for Greece in rowing at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, was the first bearer of the Olympic torch as it began its journey through Greece. The final torchbearer in Greece will be Ioannis Fountoulis, a silver medal-winning Greek water polo player from the 2020 Games, who will hand the flame to President of Greece's National Olympic Committee Spyros Capralos, who will then transfer it to the Paris organizing committee on April 26, according to Olympics.com .

The 1,000 torchbearers that make up the six Paralympic Torch Relay team relays will highlight groups deeply involved in the Paralympic Movement. This includes volunteers from the Paralympic federation, exceptional young para-athletes, all-star Paralympians, innovators using sport for social impact and supporters of those who are disabled.

The relays will capture the value of sport and teamwork in France, showcasing spectacular events, like skateboarding through Bordeaux, archery at Château de Compiègne and cycling around Mont-Saint-Michel.

“The Torch Relay is, above all, a human adventure, represented by the stories of each Torchbearer,” said Paris 2024 President Tony Estanguet, per Paris 2024 . “Be they athletes or sports enthusiasts, committed to their local communities or involved in meaningful community projects, the people we call the Forerunners represent the richness and diversity of our society. With them, the Torch Relay will be a wonderful moment of openness, transmission and sharing. ”
