11 Of The Best Things To Do In Athlone (And Nearby)

There are a fair few things to do in Athlone. You just need a decent itinerary to ensure that your time there is well spent.

You’ll get to the heart of Ireland (quite literally) in Athlone. Only 5 miles from Ireland’s geographical centre, the Midlands’ largest town is full of history, character and also serves as a good base for exploring the region.

From sailing a Viking ship around Lough Ree to sinking pints of plain at Ireland’s oldest pub , there’s plenty of weird and wonderful things to do in Athlone.

Table of Contents

The best things to do in Athlone in 2024

You’ll find the historic town of Athlone in County Westmeath, in Ireland’s often-underappreciated midlands region.

The town is home to plenty of things to see and do and it’s also a stone’s throw from heaps of natural and man-made attractions, as you’ll discover below.

1. Athlone Castle

athlone castle

Dating from the 13th century and survivor of numerous attacks and sieges, a trip to the fortress-like Athlone Castle is one of the most popular things to do in Athlone.

The turmoil it’s been through over the last 800 years means it looks quite different now to how it was originally constructed.

The towers were actually shortened during the Napoleonic Wars to make them less susceptible to cannon fire! Prepare for tales of furious battles, bloodshed and bravery.

There’s a reason that Athlone Castle ranked so high in our guide to the best castles in Ireland . Make sure you etch out some time to explore it.

2. Cycle the Old Rail Trail

Old Rail Trail cycle way from Athlone to Mullingar

Photo via Google Maps

A more genteel way of passing the time in Athlone is to take a ride along the Old Rail Trail to Mullingar.

The trail runs along a 42-kilometre stretch of what was the Midlands Great Western Railway. Now fully paved over, you’ll be able to peacefully glide through serene farmland, under arched bridges and past old disused stations.

42km sounds intimidating but there’s no rush to go the whole distance and there’s plenty of stops along the way to take in this unique experience.

3. Grab a post cycle pint in Sean’s Bar

seans bar athlone

Sean’s Bar in Athlone – the oldest pub in Ireland (Photo via Sean’s Bar)

From one way of embracing the past to another. If you’re going to relax with a smooth pint after a lengthy bike ride, why not do it at Ireland’s oldest pub ?

A short walk from the River Shannon and said to date from 900AD, Sean’s Bar has been pouring pints (or however they satisfied thirsty customers back then) for over 1000 years.

But don’t spend too long trying to wrap your head around that remarkable fact. Sit back and enjoy the cosy atmosphere and great beer at this Athlone institution.

4. Step back in time on a Viking Cruise (one of the most unique things to do in Athlone)

athlone river cruises

Got your horned helmet at the ready? Paying tribute to the actual Viking Longships that travelled around the Irish coast over 1200 years ago, Viking Cruises run 75-minute cruises up to Lough Ree – ‘Lake of the Kings’.

Leaving from the quayside at Athlone Castle, the journey is a step back in time on a longboat (almost) where you’ll hear tall tales of the Vikings and their history in the area.

This is a solid option for those of you wondering what to do in Athlone with hard to amuse kids – they’ll (hopefully) love this!

5. Stretch the legs on the Shannon Banks Nature Trail

walks in athlone

If you’re in search of more active things to do in Athlone, the Shannon Banks Trail is well worth considering.

If you don’t feel like cycling, then another fine outdoors way of seeing Athlone is along the Shannon Banks Nature Trail .

At a breezy 5km, the trail is a relaxing walk that starts behind Athlone Castle then loops around the banks of the Shannon.

Taking you past marshland, wildlife and the old Athlone Canal, there’s plenty to catch your attention along the way. This is an ideal thing to do in Athlone at any time of year – as long as it doesn’t rain!

6. Then make your belly happy at The Fatted Calf

Fatted Calf Athlone

Photo via the Fatted Calf Athlone on Facebook

You’re going to want a serious feed after all this activity so why not hit up the finest restaurant in Athlone?!

Opened in 2010 by husband and wife team Feargal and Fiona O’Donnell, The Fatted Calf on Church Street serves up the best in modern Irish cuisine using the freshest ingredients and seasonal locally sourced Midlands produce.

Given its name, they unsurprisingly pride themselves on their meat here so order the chargrilled 10oz John Stone 30-day dry-aged Irish tenderloin steak and devour it all.

7. Visit Baysports (one of the best things to do in Athlone with a group)

baysports athlone

Photo by Fennell Photography via Ireland’s Content Pool

This. Looks. Deadly! If you’re wondering what to do in Athlone on a hen or stag or with a large group of family or friends, this should be right up your street.

Inflatable waterpark. Perhaps not two words you would have thought go together. But in Athlone they do! Not only that, but Baysports Athlone is Ireland’s largest inflatable waterpark.

An undoubtedly unique spot for a family day out, there’s also kayaking, stand up paddleboarding, pedal boating, rafting, dragon boating, boat trips, and powerboat courses available here.

Located on the west shore of Lough Ree and tucked into Hodson Bay, it’s only a short 10-minute drive from Athlone centre.

8. Or escape to, eh, Athlone Escape Rooms

Athlone Escape Rooms street view

If you’re wondering what to do in Athlone when it’s lashing down, get yourself to Athlone Escape rooms (one of the best things to do in Athlone when it’s raining!).

Bragging rights are on offer later in the evening if you can say that you were the one who ‘figured it out’.

Located just off Church Street on Friary Lane, Athlone Escape Rooms provides a fiendish set of tests for those intrepid enough to take the challenge on.

From games involving zombie apocalypses to mysterious Celtic stories from deep in Ireland’s past, there’s a whole host of atmospheres and quizzes of differing difficulty on offer here.

Things to do near Athlone

OK. So, the second section of this guide tackles things to do  near  Athlone (within reasonable driving distance).

Below, you’ll discover everything from a heritage park that perfect for a nosey around to a farm that the kids will love.

1. Dún na Sí Amenity & Heritage Park

Dún na Sí Amenity & Heritage Park

Here’s a quirky old park if ever I’ve seen one – check out some of the sculptures if you don’t believe me!

Only 15 minutes from Athlone and set across 27 acres of serene parkland, Dún na Sí Amenity & Heritage Park is a spot that combines art, history, culture and recreation into one unique space.

Not only is it a cracking place for a stroll, but there’s also plenty of historical sites and wildlife dotted about too.

2. Derryglad Folk and Heritage Museum

Derryglad Folk and Heritage Museum

Photo via Tourism Ireland (Ireland’s Content Pool)

A treasure trove of Irish history, there are over 6000 artefacts in this eccentric little museum only 15 minutes from Athlone!

Even if you don’t have time to see them all, it’s hard not be impressed at the collection attained by owner Charlie Finneran over the last 35 years.

Covering rural farm life of the 1800’s all the way through to the dusty gramophones of the recent past, this is an epic assortment of memorabilia.

3. Glendeer Pet Farm (one of the best things to do in Athlone with kids)

pet farm near athlone

Photo via Glendeer Pet Farm on Facebook

Here’s an absolute winner if you’re after things to do in Athlone with a young family in tow. Just 10 minutes from the town centre, the Glendeer Pet Farm contains a bunch of the usual Irish farmyard animals.

There’s also an exotic motley crew that you certainly won’t find anywhere on the Emerald Isle.

Think parrots, emus, wallabies, monkeys, raccoons, meerkats and alpacas. Best of all, the kids get to feed the (always obliging) donkeys, goats and sheep too.

What to do in Athlone: where have we missed?

I’m sure that we’ve unintentionally left out some great things to do in Athlone in the guide above. If you have somewhere or something to recommend, let me know below.

Flanked by the River Shannon , the longest river in Ireland, there is plenty to see and do in Athlone, for locals as well as visitors. The town, with a population of just over 20k, is a place that has something to enjoy for pretty much anyone.

Its proximity to the Shannon inevitably makes the town a hotspot for nautical activity, which isn’t something you can say about many places that are inland. If boat tours, fishing or a water park sounds like your thing, you’ll find it in Athlone.

History enthusiasts can pay a visit to Athlone Castle, which has been a part of the town since the 12th century, while the magnificent campus at the Athlone Institute of Technology is worth seeing first-hand.

Athlone Castle

athlone tourist map

Athlone grew up at a fording point on the River Shannon. The first recorded bridge was built in 1120 and within a decade King Turlough O’Conor built a wooden castle to protect it. The Anglo-Normans built the first stone castle here in 1210, parts of which are incorporated into the present structure. It was built by Bishop John de Grey of Norwich, for King John of England.   From 1569-1672 it was the headquarters of the President of Connacht. The Castle was occupied by Col. Richard Grace,   Governor of Athlone during   the first Siege of Athlone in 1690 and also played a vital role in the second Siege of 1691. In the Napoleonic era the castle was remodelled for defence and took on much of its present appearance. For almost 300 years it served as an extension of the military barracks.  In 1970 it was handed over to the Office of Public Works and declared a national monument. In November 2012 the castle was re-opened following major renovations. A new visitor centre was opened with eight gallery spaces that tell the story of Athlone , its people, and the castle from prehistoric to modern times. Athlone Castle Visitor Centre is a treat for all ages, with dress up areas throughout, courtyard picnic facilities, outdoor chess and picturesque town views.  Audio guides are available for visitors in English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese and Chinese.

Visitor Centre

The initial display tells the story of the early settlement in Athlone. A 3D interactive map details prehistoric life here up to the rise of the early Irish families. The story continues uncovering the early years of the castle, through interactive games and illustrations.

Athlone Castle Café

Light refreshments are available in the castle café in the reception area. There is seating for approx 32 inside and out.

Athlone Castle Courtyard

The castle provides a panoramic view of the town and the Shannon from the castle turrets and upper battlements with information panels that highlight buildings and landmarks that have historical and cultural significance to Athlone and the Shannon. Also situated in the Castle courtyard is a giant outdoor chess set where visitors can test their game strategy and attempt to attack and capture opponent’s pieces ultimately calling check mate on their king. An archaeological pit is available for mini explorers to try their hand at discovering the finds hidden beneath the sand.

Inland travel in ancient Ireland was impeded by bogs, but you could travel north-south along the Shannon, and east-west along the eskers, the line of gravel ridges deposited by glaciers. The main east-west route was some 20 km further south, crossing the Shannon at Clonmacnoise, which grew into a great monastic centre. Probably because that area was flood-prone, the Normans when they arrived in the 12th century preferred to cross the Shannon here at Luan's ford ( Baile Átha Luain , hence "Athlone"). They built a bridge, and a fortified town and castle on the west bank. Later rulers continued to see the need for a garrison, as any coup or revolt here would strike at the very heart of Ireland.

The river formed the boundary between the Gaelic kingdoms of Connacht to the west and of Meath to the east. But half the fun of being Norman was in subduing the Gaels, and carving up their territory into shires or counties which could be re-awarded to loyal henchmen. Meath was subsumed into the kingdom of Leinster and eventually its western part was hived off as County Westmeath. The west bank became County Roscommon, but the boundary was re-drawn so that all of Athlone fell within Westmeath.

The west bank retains its higgledy-piggledy medieval street pattern but most buildings of that era were smashed in the two sieges of 1690/91, when after the Battle of the Boyne the Jacobites made a stand against the oncoming Williamites. The town was re-built in the 18th / 19th century, the railway arrived, and Athlone's central location made it an attractive base for state agencies, industry (healthcare and IT nowadays being leading employers) and the army. The castle was rebuilt, since you never just knew where Napoleon might attack next, and now contains the TIC [dead link] , open Tu-Sa 09:00-17:00.

This was built for England's King John in 1210, replacing a wooden fort, and extended circa 1276. It probably initially had a moat. Its heaviest engagements were the two 17th century sieges of Athlone. In 1690 Athlone city and castle were held by the Jacobites, who destroyed the Shannon bridge to thwart the advance of the Williamites. Fresh from victory at the Battle of the Boyne, the Williamites bombarded the city for a week but retreated when Jacobite reinforcements approached. They attacked again in 1691, attempting to storm the river crossing, and bombarding the Jacobites on the west bank for ten days. Then, with the river running unusually low, the Williamites found another fording point downstream, got across and captured the castle. Two weeks later, advancing west, they met the main Jacobite army at Aughrim, crushed them, and thereby annihilated Jacobite resistance in Ireland. The smashed-up castle was rebuilt during the Napoleonic wars but never put to the test, so much of what you see now is early 19th century. The TIC is also here. Adult €9, conc €6.50, child €4.50 . He's commemorated by a bust outside the Luan Gallery (which Google street view has pixillated to ensure his privacy) and since 2014 by a full-sized statue outside Civic Hall, his feet wound in coils of music that would ensnare a lesser man. He's buried in Deans Grange, Dublin.
  • Athlone Canal west side of town has been culverted and turned into a park. The shallows and rapids on the Shannon made it possible to ford but were a block to navigation. 15 Best Things to Do in Athlone (Ireland)

The town of Athlone is at an ancient crossing point on the Shannon River, near the very centre of Ireland.

When the idea of a federal Irish Republic was floated by the political party Sinn Féin in the 1970s, Athlone was mooted as the capital of a united federal Ireland because of its central position.

The Shannon is longer than any river in Ireland, or Britain for that matter, and a mile or two up river it flows from Lough Ree, a vast lake with furrowed banks and dozens of islands.

When the summer comes the Shannon and Lough Ree have a flotilla of yachts and cruise boats, and you can amble around the shore or play a round at one of the clubs by the water.

In the town the Norman castle and Church of Saints Peter and Paul command the scene on the Shannon’s west bank.

Let’s explore the best things to do in Athlone :

1. Athlone Castle

Athlone Castle

John de Gray, the Bishop of Norwich, built Athlone Castle during the Norman Invasion of Ireland under King John at the start of the 13th century.

This tough-looking fortress was positioned here to protect a crossing point on the River Shannon.

It was reinforced several times down the years, most recently during the Napoleonic Wars when the towers were shortened to make them more resilient to cannon fire.

The most recent restoration was just a few years ago and in 2012 a modern exhibition was unveiled at the castle, with multimedia stations and 3D maps recording five millennia of history in Athlone.

You’ll step into the shoes of historic kings and generals, and hear about the bloody battles fought over these walls.

The best bit is a 360° cinematic depiction of the Siege of Athlone during the Williamite War in 1690.

2. Lough Ree

Lough Ree

With indented shores and scores of islands, large and small, misty Lough Ree to the north is the second largest lake on the Shannon.

The scenery is awesome, under the wide open sky and on the shores that offer a habitat to migratory waterfowl, varying from woodland, to bogs and meadows for grazing sheep.

Lough Ree is also burned into Ireland’s memory as the “Lake of Kings”, where real history and legends are entwined.

Ancient kings marshalled their lands from the islands, and on Inishcleraun there was a great early-Christian monastery founded in the 6th century by St Diarmaid the Just, whose grave is on the island.

There’s endless inspiration for activities at Lough Ree, whether you’re golfing, birdwatching or hiking by the shore, or on a voyage by cruise boat, kayak, yacht or boat rental.

3. Church of Saints Peter and Paul

Church Of Saints Peter And Paul

Another eye-catching landmark in Athlone is this neo-Baroque church just in from the west bank of the Shannon.

The Church of Saints Peter and Paul is much newer than it looks, and was only finished in the 1930s.

The bold architecture of its portico, dome and pair of Italianate towers has all been interpreted as an assertion of Irish Catholicism in the wake of independence.

The ground floor is built from white limestone from Portland in Dorset, and there are six windows by the studio of eminent stained glass painter Harry Clarke.

Some flourishes to look for inside are the replicas of Michelangelo’s Moses and Pietà, a mosaic by the Fratelli Alinari and an altar with a Baroque baldachin held up by red and white marble columns.

4. Luan Gallery

Luan Gallery

In front of the Church of Saints Peter and Paul on the Shannon, the stylish Luan Gallery is a contemporary art space that opened in 2012. The older wing of the building is the Fr Matthew Temperance Hall, erected in 1897 and previously serving as a concert hall, cinema and then the town library.

The gallery is lit by floor-to-ceiling windows and looks onto the river and marina.

Some of the more renowned artists featured here over the last six years include Sinéad Ní Mhaonaigh, Catherina Hearne and James Hanley.

The gallery is also a platform for emerging local and national talent, hosting the RDS Student Art Awards Travelling Exhibition.

5. Sean’s Bar

Sean's Bar

No ordinary local, Sean’s Bar has been serving customers since the start of the 10th century.

This is the oldest pub in Ireland, and in 2004 was also declared the oldest pub in Europe.

Athlone is in fact named after his pub, which was initially known as Luain’s Inn.

The name is derived from “Atha Luain”, which means “Ford of Luain”. It comes from an early innkeeper on the west bank of the Shannon who also manned the river-crossing.

The pub can prove its origins as it has complete records of every owner since its inception.

The current facade is 19th-century, but when the building was restored sections of the walls were found to be built of 10th-century wattle, on display at the pub, and 10th-century coins were discovered in the foundations.

6. Clonmacnoise

Clonmacnoise

Travel down the Shannon and you’ll soon come to this ruined monastic settlement between the riverbank and the Mongan Bog.

A National Monument of Ireland, Clonmacnoise was established by St Ciarán of Clonmacnoise in 544 and grew into one of Ireland’s most important hubs of learning and religious life.

The complex today has the remains of a cathedral, seven churches, three high crosses, as well as grave slabs dating from the earliest years of Christianity in Ireland.

The building ruins have been restored in the last couple of decades and mostly date from the 10th to the 13th century.

The visitor centre has an array of carved cross slabs recovered on the site, and the star of the show is the Cross of the Scriptures, with bible motifs carved in its sandstone.

This monument was mentioned twice in the Annals of the Four Masters, in 957 and 1060.

7. Derryglad Heritage and Visitor Centre

Derryglad Heritage And Visitor Centre

Somewhere to get a handle on rural life in the Midlands, the Derryglad Heritage and Visitor Centre is a folk museum with more than 6,000 artefacts.

These have been collected over four decades and go back to the 18th century.

You can examine the tools of a variety of old-time trades, as well as horse-drawn machinery, tractors and household implements.

From the first half of the 20th century there are gramophones with historic 78 rpm records, cameras and photo processing equipment, radios and old hurleys (sticks for playing hurling). The park’s thatched grocery faithfully recreates the shopping experience of the 1930s, and is stocked with authentic bottles, cans and tin signs.

8. Dean Crowe Theatre

Dean Crowe Theatre

If you’re in the mood for live entertainment you can check the listings at this venue on Athlone’s left bank.

The auditorium is capacious for a town of Athlone’s size, with room for 460 spectators.

Dating back to 1800, the building used to be St Aloysius College, and before that, until 1937, it was the parish church before the Church of Saints Peter and Paul was finished.

The big date in the calendar is the RTÉ All Ireland Drama Festival at the beginning of May, but there are plays, stand-up comedy shows, music performances from classical to folk, art exhibitions and children’s events all year round.

9. Shannon Banks Nature Trail

Shannon Banks Nature Trail

Beginning just behind Athlone Castle, this looped path takes you along the Shannon and the old Athlone Canal for five kilometres.

Over this short distance you’ll enter a variety of ecosystems, and there are wooden footbridges where the trail enters marshland by the river.

If you’re interested in the nature along the trail there are four information boards describing the waterfowl, plants, fish and land-based animals you might see on your walk.

10. Old Rail Trail

Old Rail Trail

A 42-kilometre stretch of the old Midlands Great Western Railway has been paved over, and links Athlone with the town of Mullingar in the east.

Coursing through peaceful farmland, the route is clear of hills and road traffic, perfect if you’re looking for somewhere to stroll or cycle with children.

On your ride you’ll find charming pieces of old rail infrastructure, like a tunnel, bridges and former station.

You can also take detours every few kilometres to visit villages or the Hill of Uisneach, which is steeped in Irish mythology and is covered with prehistoric barrows and cairns.

11. Meehambee Dolmen

Meehambee Dolmen

Near the village of Bellanamullia past Athlone’s western suburbs is a megalithic portal tomb that lay hidden for thousands of years.

The Meehambee Dolmen was only discovered by two local children in the 1960s when they stumbled upon a pair of stone axes.

Most likely the burial place of a chief or king, the monument is 5,500 years old.

You have to be alert when you approach it on the bridle path as the enormous stones are camouflaged by moss and are easy to miss.

The doorstone has collapsed, causing the 25-ton capstone to slant at a 45° angle.

Athlone Golf Club

There are two courses on the southern shores of Lough Ree: Athlone Golf Club and Glasson Hotel and Golf Club.

But if you don’t mind a short drive you’ll find another six in the wider area.

Keeping it local, the 18-hole Athlone Golf Club is both highly-rated and reasonably priced.

Green fees are never more than €35.00 on weekdays and €40.00 on weekends.

The course has enormous greens, there isn’t a weak hole in the 18, and it’s always a pleasure to tee off with distant vistas of the lake.

The newer par-73 course at Glasson is a bit pricier, at a maximum €65.00 in the week and €70.00 on weekends.

This parkland course has a full practice area, and also benefits from that invigorating location by the water.

13. Boat Trips

Viking Tours

Based in Athlone there’s a small directory of companies ready to take you on cruises on Lough Ree or down the Shannon.

These boats tend to run in summer and are berthed on the quay under the castle walls or just along at the marina opposite the church.

Viking Tours has a craft resembling a longboat, and from March to November sails upriver to Hodson Bay on the “Lake of Kings”, imparting fun snippets of information on the trip.

Other cruise companies operating out of Athlone are Barracuda Boat Trips, picking you up from various locations around the town, and the River Run Pleasure Cruiser, sharing titbits about the wildlife and folklore of the Shannon and Lough Ree.

If you crave a bit more freedom, companies like Lough Ree Cruisers offer boat hire, for an unforgettable day or two navigating the lake, stopping for lunch at sweet old villages.

14. Glendeer Pet Farm

Glendeer Pet Farm

Families in Athlone with smaller children should keep this animal attraction near the town in mind.

The Glendeer Pet Farm has all the breeds you’d expect to see on an Irish farm, like pigs, horses, cows, sheep, donkeys and goats.

But there are also animals you might not expect, from parrots and emus, to wallabies, monkeys, raccoons, meerkats and alpacas.

Youngsters will be given a bag of animal feed to hand out to some of the inhabitants like donkeys, goats and sheep, and are invited to hold the smaller animals like guinea pigs and chicks.

For the youngest members of the clan there’s a “Fairy Trail”, soft play area and sand barn, while older kids can be let loose on the obstacle course, which has a zip-line.

15. Glasson

Glasson Village Restaurant

The ten-minute drive to this quaint village is worth every second.

The road climbs a little as it leaves Athlone and you can park up for dreamy views of the lake around New Forest.

Glasson isn’t much more than a hamlet but in summer people berth their boats at one of their four nearby marinas and make the short, picturesque walk up past the sheep herds for lunch at the Wineport Lodge, Glasson Village Restaurant or Grogan’s Bar and Restaurant.

The Glasson Country House and Golf Club has its own small harbour, allowing you to go straight from the water to the fairways.

All about Athlone

Located right in the centre of Ireland and built on the banks of the mighty River Shannon, it’s natural that Athlone has piqued the interest of everyone from saints to sergeants through the centuries. Walking around town, it feels like every building has a story, from the 12th century castle, to the 17th century barracks, to the 19th century workhouse, a remnant from Famine-era Ireland.

But this buzzy Midlands spot is far from just a historical timepiece. Artisan produce, local chatter and a warm welcome infuse bohemian cafes such as Lowe & Co . The pubs, from Sean’s to Seery’s to Gertie Browne's , are among the best on the island. And with the pleasure lake of Lough Ree just a short hop away and the River Shannon running right through town, it’s a natural playground for walkers, cyclists and watersports enthusiasts.

Things to see and do

One thing’s for sure, Athlone boasts a backstory that’s packed full of drama. Here, battles have raged, Vikings have plundered and two brutal sieges ravaged the town in the 1690s, with one survivor describing it as “hell on earth”. This history gets a 21st century reworking in the excellent Athlone Castle on the banks of the River Shannon. Dating back to 1129, the castle boasts an interactive and engaging exhibition that whisks you through some 5,000 years.

Directly across from here is a building that feels lightyears away from the 12th century stone battlements opposite. Flooded with light and boasting panoramic views over the water, the Luan Gallery is a showcase for local and international art and makes an incredible architectural counterpoint to the structures that surround it.

Afterwards, drop into Athlone’s main church to see the dazzling Harry Clarke Studios stained glass windows, take a walk along the Shannon Banks, or head to the “left bank” of town with a cluster of great restaurants, pubs and quirky shops set amongst ancient streets and alleys.

Wicked spouses, grand gestures and a battle between brothers: discover the fascinating history of this Midlands gem.

Go beyond the town

Just beyond Athlone, you’ll find that urban life melts away into a countryside dominated by water and vast swathes of green. Walking in this part of the island brings a real sense of tranquillity whether you’re exploring the abandoned Rindoon Medieval Town on the western shores of Lough Ree, or enjoying the sun-dappled wooded glades and lake views on the Portlick Millennium Forest Walk . Fancy a two-wheeled adventure? Hire a bike from town and take to the off-road Old Rail Trail , a 40km stretch of Greenway linking Mullingar and Athlone. You can tackle the whole stretch, but a good option is to cycle the 8km or so section between Athlone and Moate, taking in a visit to  Dún na Sí Amenity and Heritage Park .

Day trips abound, too, so make sure you leave time to discover  Lough Key Forest Park , a gorgeous adventure playground in County Roscommon; Belvedere House, Gardens and Park , with its follies and woodland walks; and the wonderfully quirky Derryglad Folk and Heritage Museum .
