Grigor Dimitrov edges out David Goffin in thriller to win World Tour Finals title
Against the expectations of the doubters two free-hitting, first-time finalists, each trusting his skills to breaking point, gave a remarkable season the denouement it deserved on a cold midwinter’s evening by the Thames. Grigor Dimitrov won but David Goffin did not leave a loser.
For extended passages of the deciding match of the 2017 ATP World Tour Finals they brought freshness and daring to a task that has historically been fulfilled by more illustrious rivals. After two and a half hours of often tense, high-grade tennis – the longest final since John McEnroe defeated Arthur Ashe at Madison Square Garden in 1978 – Dimitrov,Bulgaria’s first representative at this end-of-year event, prevailed 7-5, 4-6, 6-3.
It was his fourth title of the year, adding $2,549,000 to the $3m he had already gathered from 44 match wins, and 1,500 ranking points to lift him three places to No3 in the world. At last the results and the performance have matched the glamour. If Dimitrov can sustain his run in Melbourne in January the Bulgarian and his trainer, Dani Vallverdu, for so long at Andy Murray’s side – can expect a season of much fruitfulness.
A tearful Goffin - who represents Belgium against France in the Davis Cup final later this week - said afterwards: “It was a special week for me, a lot of emotions, a lot of fatigue. It was tough. It was not easy to come back after losing to Grigor in the group. Congratulations to Grigor for a fantastic year.”
Dimitrov reciprocated, adding, “It’s such an honour to play here. This has been one of the best weeks I’ve ever had. Unbelievable effort by David and I wish him the best in the Davis Cup.”
Some thought the departure of Roger Federer (beaten on Saturday by Goffin), Rafael Nadal (defeated by Goffin four days previously), and the absence of Andy Murray (beaten by his unreliable hip) along with the Tour’s other walking wounded had ripped the heart out of this tournament, an event in its ninth year at the venue, with three more to come, under the new sponsorship of Nitto.
However, there have been six sell-out sessions of 17,800, including the final, and 13 of 15 matches drew more than 16,000. The lowest attendance was 15,193 on Tuesday afternoon for the match between Jack Sock and Marin Cilic, but the tournament total of 253,642 – just ahead of last year, if short of the 2012 record of 263,229 – the year London went Olympics crazy. There are tournament directors around the world in all sorts of sports who would die happy persuading more than a quarter of a million fans to watch their product. The start was riddled with nerves on both sides of the net, neither player able to hold serve until the 19th minute as they tentatively explored all the safe options before opening their shoulders.
Consecutive aces by Goffin secured the first hold of the match and there was a restlessness in the capacity crowd, who were waiting for caviar and were having to make do with fish fingers. The menu was about to change.
Both men were going for their shots, and Dimitrov broke to level in the eighth game as the level of the exchanges grew in quality and length, although Goffin’s overcooked forehand betrayed lingering uncertainty under pressure. At last the arena was warming to the contest and the combatants responded.
Goffin, the first Belgian since doubles specialist Dick Norman in 2010 to reach this tournament, was getting in and out of trouble like a frog in a hot tub. He quivered again with ball in hand in the 12th game, but it took Dimitrov five set points to crack his resolve and take the frame in just under an hour, forcing a sixth unforced error from him on the backhand.
Just as Dimitrov looked to be pulling away, Goffin broke for a third time in the second set. A rare double net-cord off his deep backhand that dribbled over, and a ridiculously brilliant half-volley off his toes in the 10th game helped Dimitrov to keep the set alive. There was little he could do, though, to stop the Belgian holding to love and level the match at one set each.
It took Dimitrov 11 minutes to hold at the start of the third – about the same time it took him to seal the first – so there was no lack of commitment under fire. Goffin’s serve was the difference between then – he had lost only five first serves in nearly two hours, a crushing 87 per cent – so Dimitrov had to find his crumbs elsewhere, and he did in the sixth game when he pushed Goffin deep and watched his backhand drift wide for the break.
In the penultimate game Dimitrov lobbed then passed Goffin, who saved three match points, held then turned to the crowd to conduct them in their roar of support. Dimitrov sweated heavily as he set about serving out for the biggest win of his career, grateful for two tired groundstrokes by Goffin. Handed his fifth match point, he saw a forehand inch long. And how grateful he was when Goffin dumped a simple backhand into the net. The crowd gave both of them an ovation every bit as loud as if Federer had won another title here.

ATP World Tour Finals 2017: Will Juan Martin del Potro qualify for London?
By Sky Sports Tennis
Wednesday 25 October 2017 13:21, UK
The battle for places in the line-up at the ATP World Tour Finals in London is set to go down to the wire ahead of the season finale, live on Sky Sports.
ATP Race To London - Prior to Basel and Vienna
With four players, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, Alexander Zverev and Dominic Thiem, already qualified for the season finale, we analyse the prospects of the contenders, including the in-form Juan Martin del Potro, chasing the remaining four spots at The O2, between November 12-19.
Nadal, who holds a 1,960-point lead in the standings, remains the favourite to finish the campaign as the year-end world No 1 despite suffering his fourth defeat of the year against Federer in the Shanghai Masters final and pulling out of the Swiss Indoors in Basel with a knee injury .
Injuries to high-profile players including two former world No 1s, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray, mean there will be a distinctly refreshed outlook to the much anticipated denouement to the tennis season.
Good week...
Juan Martin del Potro - The popular Argentine made a successful defence of his Stockholm title on the back of his run to the semi-finals in Shanghai. With victory in Sweden, the former US Open champion moved up four places in the Race to London to 14th. The 29-year-old will look to maintain his hopes of contention in London with another deep run in Basel at this week's Swiss Indoors.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga - The charismatic Frenchman pocketed his fourth ATP World Tour title of the year, a career best, with success at the European Open. The 32-year-old proved too strong for Diego Schwartzman in Antwerp and with victory propelled himself into contention for a fourth appearance at the season finale. Tsonga, who plays in Vienna this week, now trails Pablo Carreno Busta, who is currently in procession of the final spot, by 550 points with two tournaments left before London comes calling.
Bad week...
David Goffin 's bid to qualify for London took a stumble as the Belgian suffered a surprise defeat to Greek qualifier Stefanos Tsitsipas in the quarter-finals in front of his home faithful. The 26-year-old, who played last year as an alternate, will look to pick up valuable points in Basel but could face Federer in the quarter-finals.

Roger-Rafa: A rivalry renewed
Meanwhile, Pablo Carreno Busta fell short at the Kremlin Cup succumbing to Daniil Medevedev in Moscow with US Open finalist Kevin Anderson unable to improve his hopes with a quarter-final exit Fernando Verdasco in Stockholm. Sam Querrey will need a deep run in Austria at the Vienna Open after the Wimbledon semi-finalist chose last week for a break in his schedule.

Nadal , who qualified for London in June on the back of clinching a record 10th Roland Garros title, has enjoyed a strong Asian hard court swing with victory at the China Open before his run to the final in Shanghai. After missing last year's edition through injury the Spaniard will be desperate to underline his phenomenal campaign with a triumph in London.
Federer , confirmed for Basel this week, will target a seventh World Tour Finals success and first since 2011 to top a stellar season which has seen the Swiss great enjoy a remarkable renaissance in form. The 19-time Grand Slam champion maintained his renaissance in form this year at the penultimate Masters 1000 tournament to win his second Shanghai title and sixth ATP World Tour title of the year in emphatic fashion. This year's Australian Open and Wimbledon champion has targeted winning in London as a priority .
Zverev is fast becoming a genuine contender at the biggest tournaments on tour and despite his relative inexperience at the top echelons of the game he has shown he can compete with the best. The talented German has picked up five titles this year and has already suggested he is likely to prioritise the London showcase over the inaugural edition of the Next Gen Finals in Milan. The 20-year-old will kick off his campaign as the top seed in Vienna against Viktor Troicki on Monday.
Thiem , 24, is widely regarded as one of the brightest talents in the game but after a challenging year on the road he may relish the opportunity to perform in front of his home supporters in Vienna this week. The Austrian, whose confidence took a hit after he suffered three opening losses on the bounce since the US Open, failed to extend pass the round robin stage on his debut appearance last year.
Next in Line for London...
Grigor Dimitrov jumped a spot into fifth place in the standings for London with his run to a third Stockholm final. The Bulgarian suffered his first defeat in a final this year. His fate will likely need to wait another week because he has decided to skip Vienna.
Marin Cilic, Goffin and Carreno Busta are currently the final three incumbents of spots into London. Cilic, who is defending his title, and Goffin feature in Basel while the Spaniard plays in Vienna.
What's coming up...
There are still two weeks worth of tournaments for players to compile points to boost their qualification hopes - click here for the full run-down of Sky Sports events.
We will have all the action from the Erste Bank Open and Swiss Indoors Basel before the Paris Masters.

Atp munich day 3 predictions including alexander zverev vs jurij rodionov.
- April 16, 2024
- Steen Kirby
There are four round of 16 matches on day 3 at ATP Munich, with two of those matches featuring a home German player including top seed Alexander Zverev. Here is your look at all the action.
Alexander Zverev vs Jurij Rodionov
Rodionov has already reached a career high ranking of #87 this season, he cruised in the opening round against Vukic and already has a challenger title this season. Playing Zverev is a step up though, at 19-8 on the season there is little to suggest that the top seeded German is going to be bothered by his Austrian counterpart. Zverev should continue to tune up as he tries to contend for the French Open. Zverev in 2
Rudolf Molleker vs Jack Draper
Molleker has found some success on the ATP Challenger Tour lately but competing at the ATP Tour level has been a bridge too far, he did finally win a tour level match as a wild card when he won his round 1 contest. Draper needed three sets to get out of the first round and is 10-8 on the season with one ATP final already. Draper is not a strong player on clay, but he’s the better tennis player, I do think he will find a way to win despite the surface. Draper in 3
Taylor Fritz vs Alejandro Moro Canas
12-7 on the year with one ATP title (Delray) is a respectable start for Fritz but not world beating. His best results come on hard courts and he’s struggled to be consistent on clay as a top player. Canas is riding high, he upset Dominic Thiem after qualifying for his first ever ATP main draw victory. He was 23-19 on the Challenger Tour last year and is a fresh name on tour. Fritz should have enough in his arsenal to figure things out, but the win against Thiem will buoy Canas. Fritz in 3
Alex Michelsen vs Cristian Garin
At 7-9 on the year Garin continues his trend of being average, his best results in his career have always been on clay but he hasn’t reached a tournament final since 2021. Michelsen is at a career high of 70 as a teenager, he’s already 16-18 at the ATP Tour level, and had 33 Challenger Tour wins last year. He would crush Garin on any surface but clay, but clay is where Garin excels and Michelsen lacks experience. The American looks too good to lose though. Michelsen in 2
