The dentex (Dentex dentex)  is a common saltwater fish in the Mediterranean Sea, Black Sea and sometimes they appear in the Canary Islands, Morocco and Senegal. They have very strong teeth to feed on fish, squid and mollusca. Dentex are a great species for sportfishing and are targetted mainly trolling or jigging. The larger fish are 1m long and can weigh up to 15 kg (35 lb).

The Little tunny or False Albacore  (Euthynnus alletteratus)  is easily identified by the dark spots under its pectoral fins. They like warm temperate and tropical waters of the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. The larger Little Tunny weigh up to 35lb and can reach 1,2m.

Fishing season in benidorm.

The best months for big game fishing in Benidorm are june, july and august. Trolling (april, may and june) fishing charters target albacore and bluefin tuna offshore. From july to september chumming and drifting is the best technique to target bluefin tuna.

Reef fishing and deep sea fishing in Benidorm can be done all year round. Live bait fishing for dentex and amberjack is also possible from January to December.

Inshore trolling and spinning is good from April to November: top species are little tunny, mahi-mahi and bonito.

TOP FISHING TECHNIQUES IN Benidorm

Bottom fishing is probably one of the easiest methods of fishing, the technique is really simple, consisting in a rig for fishing on the bottom with a weight attached to the line, and a hook at the end of the line.

Tuna fishing is a fishing technique that brings together all the ways to fish this incredible predator. You can fish via trolling, spinning or jigging among others. Tuna is a fierce fighter, so adequate material is required to face this magnificent fighter.

Trolling is a fishing technique where one or more fishing lines, baited with lures or natural bait, are drawn behind a moving boat. Trolling can be done both in-shore and off-shore.

The trolling speed depends on the type of bait and the fish species. Where tuna and marlin like a speed of 6 to 10 knots, other species such as dentex or seabass should be targeted with a trolling speed of 3-4 knots maximum.

When trolling, the angler tries to raise a fish behind the boat using hookless teasers. Once the fish is there, the angler drops back a dead bait to a fish raised on a hookless teaser. Bait & Switch is probably the most exciting way of marlin fishing.

Spin Fishing is a technique of fishing that is used to target fish that are usually close to the top of the water. Throwing a lure of any description and retrieving it in a variety of different speeds and rhythms to produce a bite from a nearby fish.

Squid fishing is a style that has been adapted to target these tricky saltwater animals. You will be using a technique almost the same as the normal spin fishing technique.

Casting out and slowly retrieving the squid jig with different speeds and retrieval styles.

Pop fishing or "popping" is one of the most exciting ways to fish as you can witness all the action close to the surface of the water.

This style of fishing involves dragging a lure known as a popper across the surface of the water with a short sharp retrieving action. The lure slaps against the water creating a popping sound and fires up nearby fish.

Shark fishing is a sport that combines fisherman against one of the oldest animals on the planet. It is an exciting form of fishing when productive and is usually done, but not always, by chumming the water close to your fishing grounds and fishing with an alive or dead natural bait.

Live bait fishing is a style that is used to target large fish species by using smaller "live" fish species as natural bait. You will let the bait swim naturally to attract predator fish that might be in the area you are fishing.

This type of fishing generally requires a decent amount of travelling away from land. You will be fishing in potentially large depths of water but generally chasing tuna or marlin type species that live closer to the surface. Famous pioneers like Ernest Hemingway made deep sea fishing and big game fishing very popular. For deep sea fishing large, expensive boats and strong fishing tackle are required.

Jigging is the fishing technique where an angler fishes a metal lure, called a jig, vertically. This is opposed to spinnerbaits which move through the water horizontally. Basically, a metal lure is dropped to a certain depth (normally the bottom) and then reeled in with rhythmic, jerky moves to attract the predator.

Sea Fishing in Benidorm

The entire coastal and inland regions of the Costa Blanca provide the perfect setting for a whole range of sports and activities including sea fishing in Benidorm. For the size of the Costa Blanca there are surprisingly few rivers and lakes where good fishing can be found, but along the coastline is a different story with thousands of rocky coves and many miles of secluded beach where anglers can cast a line.

Sea Fishing in Benidorm

In the coastal area around Benidorm keen anglers can try their hand at various types of fishing including beach casting which requires very long fishing rods in order to cast the bait out into the deeper waters, cliff fishing which usually also needs a fairly long rod to get the bait passed the rocks or reefs at the base of the cliff, and rock fishing which can be done with any type of fishing rod as anglers fish off rocks next to deep waters so don't need to cast far. Although many local anglers tend to break the rules, all sea fishing in Benidorm requires a license so when on holiday it's always wise to fish from a fully legal and licensed boat.

Located on Av. de Europa 5, the well established Marco Polo Expediciones offer a great choice of exciting activities and adventures that includes their sea fishing in Benidorm trip. Equipment and techniques for shark fishing in Benidorm

Fishing for sharks in Benidorm requires specific equipment and techniques. To ensure a successful catch, anglers must be well-prepared and knowledgeable about the tools they need to use and the strategies they should employ.

To begin with, a sturdy fishing rod and reel are essential for shark fishing in Benidorm. These should be capable of handling the immense strength of these marine predators. Additionally, a reliable fishing line with a high breaking strength is crucial to prevent it from snapping under the weight of a hooked shark.

Furthermore, using appropriate bait is key to attracting sharks. Fish heads or guts can be effective lures, as their strong scent entices these creatures from afar. Some anglers also use artificial bait that mimics the appearance and movement of small fish or other prey.

In terms of techniques, chumming is frequently employed in shark fishing. This involves scattering small pieces of fish or other attractants in the water to create a feeding frenzy that brings sharks closer to the fishing area. Once sharks are attracted, casting and retrieving the bait at varying depths can increase the chances of enticing a strike.

Now let’s delve into some unique details about shark fishing in Benidorm. The best time for this activity is usually early morning or late afternoon when sharks are more active near the shoreline. It’s important to note that catch-and-release is encouraged to preserve these magnificent creatures and maintain balance in their ecosystem.

11 Best Day Trips From Benidorm

Europe , Spain , Travel | May 29, 2017

If you’re on holiday in the Brits abroad haven, why not take a day trip from Benidorm to explore what else the area has to offer? Read on to find out how to visit the beautiful Guadalest Valley from Benidorm and discover some more amazing places to visit near Benidorm.

When I went to Benidorm I set off with certain expectations. I’d been twice before as a child, and I thought Benidorm was everything I’d seen on those trips; sunburnt beer bellies on the beach, heaving pubs that looked like they’d been imported straight from the rougher parts of the UK and anonymous high-rises.

Like many people who holiday in Benidorm, I had only experienced the parts depicted in  that  TV series.

Spanish villages near Benidorm

I love visiting rural places when I travel to see how the locals really live, and I had the chance to do that on this trip thanks to icelolly.com and  Visit Benidorm , who invited me to Spain on a press trip to show people the authentic parts of Benidorm .

We took a day trip from Benidorm into the mountains one day and though we didn’t know it when we piled in to the vehicle, we were about to experience true Spanish culture… just twenty minutes away from the main strip!

Here are two villages near Benidorm that gave us a taste of la vida española.

Authentic Spanish villages near Benidorm: Polop

We only drove through this ramshackle village near Benidorm, but I immediately fell in love with the place. Surrounded by almond and olive trees, there’s something a bit Cinque Terre-esque about this place (even though it’s inland).

On a clear day you can see right to Albir and Altea on the coast and inland to Callosa and the Sierra Bernia. Polop also gives you a perfect view of the ‘Leon Dormido’ – the mountain shaped like a sleeping lion.

I wish we’d had time to climb out and spend an hour or two walking along the medieval city walls and eating tapas at Polop’s quaint little bars! Polop would be a lovely day trip from Benidorm that doesn’t require a long car journey.

2. Guadalest Valley

Spanish cultural villages near Benidorm: Guadalest

Guadalest blew me away. As we drove towards the village, we spied a whimsical miniature castle – the white bell tower of Penon de la Alcala – perched precariously on the mountaintop and I knew then that this village was going to be magical.

When we arrived in Guadalest from Benidorm, we walked through a tiny row of shops and up uneven steps, looking down at the lush green valley studded with palm trees below us.

Spanish cultural villages near Benidorm: Guadalest

Guadalest is home to about 200 people, but it feels like even less.

When we could climb no further we walked over to a wall, and I got a genuine surprise when I looked over it to see this unbelievably blue reservoir. Sometimes not listening to your guide means you get the best surprise!

The Embalse de Guadalest was built between 1953 and 1963 and still serves the village.

Spanish cultural villages near Benidorm: Guadalest

Two hours is more than enough time to delve in to Guadalest, but those two hours we spent there will probably stay with me forever.

Yes, it’s touristy, having been declared a ‘Monument of Historical and Artistic Value’ in 1974, but people go for a reason. It’s a great place to visit from Benidorm if you’re after natural beauty and a bit of culture.

There are also a few odd museums, like the ‘MicroGigantic Museum’, where tiny miniature replicas are housed with giant sculptures. Don’t miss the salt and pepper shaker museum either! Niche.

3. Valencia

Visit Valencia from Benidorm

The third largest city in Spain is well worth visiting while you’re in Benidorm for a day trip that will satisfy your culture quota.

There’s so much to do in Valencia, whether you’re interested in the history of the Old Town or tasting local food at the Central Market. If you’re self-driving to Valencia from Benidorm, check out this list of tours and activities you can do once you get to the city.

One of the best villages to visit from Benidorm

A 45 minute drive from Benidorm will take you to the coastal town of Xàbia (Javea). Its architecture gives the place all the charm of a rustic fishing village with the added bonus of modern facilities like an indoor market, golf clubs and watersports.

Don’t miss Arenal Beach, which has white sand and a laid-back vibe.

Book your Xàbia trip from Benidorm here .

5. Calpe and Denia

Easy day trip from Benidorm

These fishing villages make for a relaxing day trip from Benidorm. You can explore ancient Roman ruins, stroll Calpe’s quiet promenade and visit the Denia Castle.

If you’re feeling brave you can tackle the rock of Ifach at Carpe, but it’s a spine-tingling climb so don’t try it if you’re not in good shape!

Check prices for a day trip to Carpe and Denia from Benidorm here .

6. Alicante

Alicante is a great place to go from Benidorm

The chic city of Alicante is an easy day trip from Benidorm – you’ve got to go before you fly home anyway because its airport is the gateway to Benidorm! Go for the nightlife in El Barrio or the mix of city and beach of its promenade, Esplanada d’Espanya.

Hike or take the list to Castillo de Santa Bárbara for beautiful views over the city.

Check Alicante tour prices from Benidorm here .

Albir Beach

The pristine promenade of Playa del Albir makes a refreshing change from Benidorm’s crowded waterfront. You’ll find cheap restaurants there and can wander the spacious streets to get your steps in.

With the mountains to the north and sea views on your other side, you might just get swept away with Albir!

Check prices for your day in Albir here .

Altea is an authentic place to visit near Benidorm

10km from the resorts, Altea is one of the best places to visit from Benidorm. If you’re not up for a long car journey, you’ll appreciate the 15 minute drive to Altea. You’ll find picture-perfect whitewashed houses that speak of a Spain from long ago, completely at odds with the buzz of Benidorm.

Among Altea’s must-sees are “Virgin de Consuelo” church, the main plaza of the Old Town and the working fishing port. You can even walk along the promenade all the way to Albir.

This tour from Benidorm includes time in Altea.

9. Algar Waterfalls

One of the most popular day trips from Benidorm is the picturesque Algar Waterfalls. 15km from Benidorm, this natural attraction has clear water for swimming and hiking trails.

Take water shoes – it’s slippy and definitely not a place to visit if you have mobility issues.

10. A chocolate factory

Chocoholics, take note! You can visit the town of Villajoyosa from Benidorm and spend the day in heaven at its chocolate factories. It’s a scenic journey along the coast and you’ll get to see how chocolate is made and look at the museum.

If you go on a Thursday, you’ll be able to shop at the local market.

Book this excursion from Benidorm to the chocolate factory.

11. Jalon Valley

Just shy of 40 minutes from Benidorm, Jalon Valley (aka Xaló) is a wine-making region where you can browse and sample different local wines in the various bodegas, and shop for souvenirs at the craft market (Saturdays only).

Enjoy gorgeous views of the almond tree-covered valley and visit Iglesia Parroquial de Santa María and the lush botanical garden.
