Paris - Private Travel

From its grand monuments to the quiet, little contemplative corners, with enormous flare affecting the entire world in so many fascinating ways, Paris is indeed a cultural heartbeat of mammoth proportion. When you discover why French culture has been such a powerful influence for centuries, you will only want to know more. Through its museums and galleries, boulevards and statues, boutiques and bistros, the City of Light will put you in its pocket.

Bespoke luxury trips to Paris can be anything you desire – that’s the magic that can be whipped up at a moment’s notice and wrapped in a bow. Full of grace and style, utterly unique and impossibly romantic, Paris is enveloped with an aura of sensual refinement. When you’re not lingering streetside in your wicker chair, you’re combing Paris’s fabled neighborhoods – the vibrant streets of Saint Germain des Prés, the quaint bistros and galleries of

Le Marais, the shopping avenues of Montparnasse, the village vibe of Charonne. Arrange your explorations around the highlights, of course: the Arc de Triomphe, Eiffel Tower, Champs-Élysées, Jardin du Luxembourg, Notre Dame Cathedral and Basilique du Sacré-Coeur up on the hill. The Seine River and its bridges are landmarks unto themselves. With the incomparable Louvre, the Musée d’Orsay, the Musée Rodin, and the Centre

Pompidou, among countless others, the Paris galleries can effortlessly fill a month of your calendar. The same goes for the gastronomic adventures to be found in bakeries and cheese shops, corner bistros and Michelin-star establishments – the food in Paris is astounding, the choice endless, the satisfaction guaranteed. French cuisine is an influence felt around the globe, haute or hip, experimental or traditional. And when you discover Paris through custom-designed luxury travel, you’re ensured style to the nth degree, from the haute couture fashion houses down to the street level. Nowhere else will you find so many specialty shops. It’s exactly time you got lost in one or two.

The Pont Alexandre III & The Invalides in Paris

Paris “The City of Love”

Luxury travel to paris.

Floating down the Seine and experiencing the City of Lights first hand, visiting Paris’ most romantic gardens, seeing Monet’s best work, cooking with a master chef, exploring Paris’ most exclusive antique markets, seeing Paris’ past firmly planted in the present…

these are but a few of the unique experiences tailor-made for you by AAV (Académie des Arts de Vivre). A Parisian’s Paris with the luxury and glamour to make this a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

A photo of one of our Paris expert guides

I have been working as a guide in Paris for 31 years, and therefore for more than 70 different travel agencies. Marie-Thérèse de Willermin struck me as not only the embodiment of courtesy, but as one of the most thorough, precise, God-is-in-the-details persons I have ever met. Eric is, in every respect, the worthy son of his mother. All I will add is : I wish that everybody, in every industry, would work like AAV does. Jean-Manuel T. Expert Guide

5 things you don’t know about Paris

The Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, Notre Dame, Sacré Coeur… almost everyone knows these tourist monuments, but only insiders realize how rich and diverse Paris’ history is, and the profound impact the city has had on foreign writers, painters and musicians. Here are five little-known facts:

The concept of shopping for pleasure was invented in Paris in the 1850’s. Paris truly is the world’s shopping capital!

The first jazz club in Paris opened after WWII and still operates today. It inspired the décor in the movie La La Land.

The first large luxury hotel in Paris was a project of Napoleon III, built for the World Expo in 1855.

Writers Earnest Hemingway and F. Scott Fitzgerald and painters Tsuguharu Foujita, Salvador Dali and Pablo Picasso all lived here.

The fruits and vegetables served at Alain Ducasse’s gourmet restaurant at the Plaza Athénée are harvested from the Versailles castle gardens.

Where to stay in paris.

A luxury holiday in Paris starts with the best hotels, and AAV partners with the most exclusive, five star hotels. Down the street from L’Elysée, the residence of France’s president,  Le Bristol  is the first hotel in France to earn the distinction of  “Palace hotel.”  It combines exquisitely decorated rooms with gastronomic excellence. The Hotel Pont Royal , between the Musée d’Orsay and the legendary Les Deux Magots, is at the epicenter of Parisian culture.  The ultimate indulgence?  The Pont Royal’s penthouse suite, located on the last floor of the hotel has a terrace and an exceptional 360 ° view of the monuments of Paris. The San Régis is among the finest hotels of the world, with elegance hidden away behind its discreet entrance.  The restaurant is enchanting,

designed in the style of a winter garden and nestled beneath a majestic glass roof. The Ritz , located at the Place Vendome with the world’s most exclusive jewelers, is where Lady Diana used to stay when visiting Paris. The Shangri La Paris, directly across the Seine from the Eiffel Tower, has breathtaking views of both.   Staying at the Hotel le Crillon feels like living in a chateau.  At the foot of the Champs Elysées, this luxury hotel counts Winston Churchill and Madonna among its guests. Accommodations at these luxury hotels include guest rooms and suites with tailor-made options to make your honeymoon, family getaway, and private vacations unforgettable.

When is the best time to visit Paris?

The Cole Porter song is right—no matter the season, no matter your interests, there is always something to love about Paris. Here is what you will experience with each season.

Paris in winter: During the cold, rainy weather and early nights of winter, Paris is bejeweled by lights, with decorations especially beautiful on the Champs-Elysées. The Grands Magasins, the big department stores, rival one another with sophisticated animated window displays just for the holidays. Paris in winter is the perfect time for hot chocolate at Angelina’s.

Paris in spring: The weather is warmer, Parisians shed their heavy coats, and the city’s parks erupt with blossoms. This is the perfect moment to visit Bagatelle or to stroll in the Tuileries gardens near the Louvre. The first music festivals also begin in spring. Seasonal foods such as asparagus and snow peas make their appearance in the city’s exclusive restaurants.

Paris in summer: Warmer weather and longer days make outdoor markets and sidewalk cafés even more alluring in summer. Since Parisians look for every opportunity to be outside, you will find outdoor dances, concerts, movies under the stars, street art, and even boating in the Seine and on the Canal de l’Ourcq. The perfect moment to enjoy Paris’ unique rooftop bars.

Paris in autumn: Many travel advisers consider Paris to be at its most beautiful in fall. With 484,000 trees in the city, autumn is indeed spectacular. The shops which closed over summer vacation are now open. Important art exhibitions open. It’s also mushroom season and harvest time for most vegetables, so perhaps it is the ideal season to experience French gastronomy.

Travel tips about Paris

Luxury travel in Paris means seeing sites which are off the beaten track, having local guides share their expert insight into Parisian history and culture and personal shoppers who have access to people and places of which others only dream. With AAV a luxury trip is a unique experience, tailor-made for you with your dreams, your likes and dislikes all taken into account. You will have private, exclusive encounters designed just for you. A few tips from our local guides:

Brunch has become ‘a thing’ in Paris

Perhaps the most interesting, high end brunch is at the Royal Monceau, whose ‘Sunday Royal Brunch’ will be one of your most memorable culinary experiences:  Pierre Hermé pastries, organic eggs cooked to order, award-winning breads from Frédéric Lalos…

Speaking of Pierre Hermé…

Hermé’s macarons are probably the most famous– upscale, bold flavors and new collections launched with each season.  For an even more glamorous experience, be sure go upstairs at Ladurée’s shop on the Champs Elysées for tea and macarons.

Even with a private driver, you will walk a lot

A Parisian walks an average of 6 kilometers (3.8 miles) per day, and that’s just a normal day, without any sightseeing or shopping.  We strongly recommend comfortable shoes to enjoy your experience to the fullest.

Walk in the footsteps of Ernest Hemingway

For a unique experience, shop the bouquinistes , the book vendors along the Seine, just like Heminway did almost a century ago.  You will find used books, records, and art prints, strong souvenirs of French culture.

Drink local

You will have France’s finest wines when dining at exclusive Parisian restaurants, so why not take advantage of an afternoon break to taste a beer made locally?  There are 18 microbreweries located in or around Paris.

History, impressive architecture and an alluring local culture

A French city trapped in the 19th century, dazzling visitors to this day with its charming cityscape. Paris is seductive, stunning whatever the weather, and above all, timeless.

There is plenty to do and see in Paris, but it is a city that captivates its guests with the little things; strolling the cobbled avenues, people-watching in the finest French cafés, or savouring fresh-baked pastries from the local boulangerie.

Paris oozes chic, with trendy boutiques and haute-couture labels dotted all over every arrondissement. ‘La femme Parisienne’ is renowned for her effortless style and is resident in this fashion capital of the world. Paris is also home to the most visited art museum in the world, The Louvre, and boasts many other fascinating museums, with dynamic and developing exhibitions.

If foodie self-indulgence and gourmet heaven is what you’re looking for, you’ve found it. Wining and dining is unmatched in Paris, with world-class chefs and Michelin-star restaurants. Local cafés and bars are equally delightful, the perfect places to soak up that enviable Parisian culture.

With a wide variety of gorgeous hotels, excellent restaurants, and an extensive to-do list, our travel designers can offer their expert advice and make your privately guided trip to Paris a truly unforgettable one.

Visit the major monuments, such as the Eiffel Tower, Champs-Élysées and the Sacré-Cœur.

Attend an exhibition in the Quai D’Orsay, The Louvre or the Musée Picasso.

Shop in the Saint-Germain-des-Prés area.

Dine in typical French cafes sampling delicious food and wine.

Paris is an iconic city and for good reason - it has so many highlights. Visiting the great art galleries, a boat trip on the Seine, wandering the streets of Montmartre and of course the obligatory stop at the Eiffel Tower. For me though, it’s the culture - sitting in a cafe enjoying great food and wine and people watching is an event all of its own in Paris.

Luxury Travel To Paris From The Us

by Melissa Giroux | Jan 23, 2023 | Travel Tips

Paris, the City of Lights, is a luxury travel destination that offers an unrivaled combination of art, culture, food, and romance.

Known for its iconic landmarks like the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame, and the Louvre, as well as its charming streets, world-class dining, and luxurious accommodations, Paris is a destination that should be on every traveler’s bucket list.

If you’re planning a luxury trip to Paris from the US, here’s everything you need to know to make the most of your experience.

Paris at night

Planning Your Trip

The first step in planning a luxury trip to Paris from the US is to ensure that you have the necessary visa. US citizens do not need a visa for stays in France of less than 90 days.

Keep in mind that you will need a valid passport with at least six months remaining before its expiration date. It’s also a good idea to check the latest travel advisories and requirements before you depart.

The best time to visit Paris depends on your preferences. Spring and fall are the most popular seasons, offering mild weather and fewer crowds.

However, the summer months are also a great time to visit if you’re looking to experience the city’s famous gardens and outdoor terraces. Winter in Paris can be chilly, but it’s also a magical time to see the city’s holiday lights and enjoy the cozy atmosphere.

Regarding flights, there are several options for getting to Paris from the US. Non-stop flights are available from several major cities, including New York, Boston, and Los Angeles. If you’re looking for a more luxurious experience, consider the best business class flights of leading airlines to Paris or book a private jet.

When to visit Paris

Although Paris is welcoming all year round, there are certain times of the year it’s even better to visit. If you want to void the crazy summer crowds, but still enjoy milder weather visit between April and June or October to early November.

Paris is also dazzling over the festive period, illuminated by Christmas lights and New Years firework displays.

How to get around Paris

Paris is very well connected, with lots of transport options at your disposal. Being a very walkable city, this is by far one of the best ways to get around. Take a gentle stroll down the Champs Elysees or through one of the cities many parks such as the Jardin des Tuileries.

Public transport is affordable, quick and easy – with the Paris Metro connecting all corners of the city. To see Paris from a different perspective whilst you get from A to B, head to the water. The Batobus service runs on the Seine river from May to September.

The service connects eight stops, which happen to be some of the most popular areas of the city, including the Louvre and the Notre Dame. You can buy a 1-day, 2 days in Paris or annual pass for the Batobus.

Paris, France - The moving Metro train in Paris, France. Metro is very popular transport in Paris and the 2nd largest underground system worldwide by number of stations (300).

What to expect in Paris

In Paris, the main lanugage spoken is French. You’ll find a lot of Parisians do speak English too, particularly in the touristy areas of the city.

It is polite however to learn some basic French before you go such as Bonjour (hello), Merci (thank you) and parlez vous Anglais? (do you speak English?) The currency in Paris is the Euro , which is a universal currency among many European countries.

You may be curious to know if tipping is expected. For hotel porters and concierges, it is expected for you to offer a little something as they are providing you with an additional service.

Taxi drivers are at a set rate, so a tip is not expected. When it comes to eating out in Paris, a service charge is customarily included in your bill, so tipping is not expected, but If you enjoyed exceptional service, you can, of course, leave something extra.

Luxury things to do in Paris

Premium shopping destinations.

As a luxury shopping destination, Paris is like nowhere else in the world. For designer names such as Alexander McQueen and France’s own Coco Chanel, Rue Saint-Honoré is the go-to lacale. Infact, this area of Paris is one of the most upmarket retail destinations throughout the whole of Europe.

The labyrinth of alleyways found at Marché aux Puces de Saint-Ouen together form the largest antiques and second-hand market in the world. Over 1,700 merchants sell furniture, works of art, and a whole host of weird and wonderful objects that will ignite the collector in you.

Located in Paris’ 2nd arrondissement, the covered Galerie Vivienne is a paradise of boutiques. Along the 176 meter long walkway, you’ll find the flagship store of Jean-Paul Gaultier, and Les Caves Legrand, one of the very best wine stores in Paris.

The Eiffel Tower

Towering high over the skyline is arguably the very symbol of Paris, the Eiffel Tower. Although this is a magnet for tourists, a visit to the Eiffel Tower doesn’t have to be fraught with crowds, queuing and stress. On the second floor of the tower is Le Jules Verne, a French fine dining establishment.

Three-star chef Frédéric Anton strives to make Jules Verne a culinary destination, for more than just the incredible views of course. There is a strict dress code and online reservations are a must.

Take a relaxing float in the pool, which has holiday-scapes projected onto screens, making it easy for you to escape from it all.

Semi-annually, venues across the city burst into life as designers, and the who’s who of the fashion world come together to marvel at the latest works from top brands.

Sadly, if you want to see one of the big runway shows, your chances are pretty slim. The guest list is only open the industry elite.

However, that doesn’t stop visitors from getting in on the buzz. Head to Place Vendôme or Place de la Concorde , where you’ll find the fashion crowd. Alternatively, visit Galeries Lafayette where you can see a free runway show every Friday afternoon.

Le Pavillon de la Reine Arrow

The Marais neighborhood’s Place de Vosges has often been called one of the most beautiful squares in the world, so it’s a good thing that this family-owned hotel’s ivy-covered, 17th-century façade fits right in. The insides are pretty photo-worthy, too: past the extensive private garden courtyard—a fairytale come to life when all lit up—the interiors by Didier Benderli of Kérylos Interiors mix Old World touches like original antiques, marble fireplace mantles, and richly-colored oil portraits of aristocratic faces with contemporary-styled furnishings and clean lines, resulting in a vibe that’s both plush and un-fussy. Take note: The 56 rooms and suites each feature a different style and décor, so be sure to ask in advance if you prefer antique over modern, or vice-versa.

Hôtel Providence Arrow

This place is made for falling in love—with Paris, above all. Hidden away on a side street in the ever-evolving 10th arrondisement, this 19th-century townhouse has been impeccably crafted under the direction of Pierre Moussie, known for his upscale bistros, including the nearby Chez Jeannette. Bespoke doesn’t begin to cover it: every finish, fabric, and fixture has been hand-picked from a mix of contemporary, vintage, and flea-market finds, resulting in a atmosphere that’s at once refined and playful.

Pavillon Faubourg Saint Germain Arrow

In the beating heart of historic literary Paris, this retro-chic five-star on the left bank cleverly plays up the writers and philosophers who have spent time both in the Saint-Germain neighborhood and the hotel’s previous incarnation. Books published by Gallimard, whose headquarters are a short walk away, abound in cozy lounges, from the moody library to the fireplace salon, and in guest rooms, setting an artistic tone throughout the hotel. All 47 rooms and suites feel like little apartments, each with Haussmanian high ceilings, crown moldings, plush 70s-style furnishings, parquet floors, curvaceous angles and decorative pieces (mirrors, pillows, bedspreads, wall lights, and more) and a slightly different color palette. Keeping with the retro-chic aesthetic, double basins in the bathroom are set within a custom-designed wood and brushed brass cabinet while the Terrazzo floor shifts nicely from the Chevron floors. Of course, the most spectacular of the rooms is the top-floor (aptly-named) Joyce Suite—nearly 753 square feet of space with exposed wood beams, two bathrooms, and unobstructed views over the rooftops of Paris.

Hôtel Madame Rêve Arrow

Located on a discreet corner near Les Halles in what was once Paris ’s only 24-hour post office, Madame Rêve Hotel is where well-heeled guests spend the night in stylish rooms with monument views, or at the hotel’s 10,000-square-foot rooftop and restaurant, primed for peak summer socializing. This is as central Paris as you can get: Walk south a mere four blocks to the Seine and the newly reopened La Samaritaine department store; east to the spectacular Bourse de la Commerce Pinault Collection and Les Halles; west to Palais Royale and the Louvre . Essentially, you can’t sneeze without bumping into 1,000 years of Paris history and culture. The pedestrian thoroughfare rue Montorgueil is also nearby for all your artisanal desires, be it a box of chocolates from À la Mère de Famille or a specialty pastry from Fou de Patisserie. Guests here range from tattooed fashion designers to white-haired entrepreneurs in pink Saint Laurent sneakers. The 82 rooms give off Bond-meets-Balmain vibes, with onyx desks and tables, tan leather chairs, and sumptuous linens—and, if you choose wisely, views of the Eiffel Tower . Enjoy a sexy, dimly lit dinner at La Plume, a Franco-Japanese offering that’s definitely the property’s pride and joy.

Ritz Paris

Ritz Paris Arrow

César Ritz opened this limestone bastion of French hospitality in 1898 and, in the course of running it, he and his wife, Marie Louise, who would take over the business, flipped the industry on its head. It was the first hotel in Paris with telephones, the first to offer private baths, and the first to install electricity throughout the property. It was also one of the first places in town where women could come without chaperones and meet friends for five o’clock tea. From the start, The Ritz Paris has been a Grand Siècle-style hotel with a modern soul and, much as in 1898, change is afoot. It’s said that when he was too ill to dine out, Marcel Proust had chicken and potatoes sent over from The Ritz Paris—now those hallowed kitchens are home to their first female head chef, Eugénie Béziat. Chef Béziat was born in Gabon to French parents and spent her childhood in Africa, so the flagship restaurant, Espadon , features dishes such as chicken yassa, a Senegalese speciality, and barbecued lobster with cassava semolina. Meanwhile, down a warmly lit hall is Bar Hemingway, named for the American novelist who scrimped for a cocktail a week at The Ritz. Last spring, longtime head bartender Colin Field (inventor of the Clean Dirty Martini, served with an ice cube of olive juice) stepped aside, and his protégé Anne-Sophie Prestail, has come in from the wings. — Jo Rodgers

Hôtel Dame des Arts Arrow

The Quartier Latin is, of course, a famously artsy part of Paris—one with strong cinematic associations. But you needn’t have stumbled out of a screening room at the nearby Le Champo rubbing your eyes with one hand and clutching an issue of  Cahiers du Cinéma in the other to appreciate what designer Raphael Navot has done with Hôtel Dame Des Arts. It’s all about the interplay between curved and straight lines, hard and soft textures, glossy and matte surfaces—you’ll inhale its essence the moment you step inside. Style-wise, the 109 rooms are similarly got-up in a way that is at once spartan and spoiling, chic and subdued. The in-house restaurant serves up elevated contemporary Mexican cuisine with fusion of French, Mexican, and Japanese flavors, while the 360-degree views from the rooftop bar alone are a reason to book. If your faith in Paris is flagging—which does happen but seldom lasts—a visit to the rooftop of Hôtel Dame des Arts will restore it. —Steve King

Hotel Rochechouart Arrow

The carefree spirit of the roaring twenties lives on in this affordable and eminently fun eight-story Art Deco relic, with well-designed rooms, an elegant brasserie popular with locals, and a nightclub to keep the action going until late. The 106 rooms were given an autumnal, woody touch with burl wood headboards, curved armchairs or sofas, retro tiled bathrooms and alabaster suspension lamps, thoughtfully whisk guests to another time. The Sacré Coeur looms large from northern-facing room windows (and in some cases, balconies) but is accessible to all from the rooftop lounge bar. Be aware, if you don’t splurge on a suite, rooms will be compact in true Parisian style. The old-world brasserie on the ground-floor is destination among Parisians that has plush banquettes, soaring ceilings, and comforting Parisian classics like chicken liver pâté and roasted pork belly with crisp frites.

Molitor Arrow

Paris is a city of pools—in fact, it's home to 38 public swimming spots—but none have the history of the Molitor. The bikini debuted here, and they say the water is so clear you can make your morning coffee with it. After a $100 million investment, the Molitor has been resurrected as the city's latest cool hangout. This is like staying at a beach club in the least likely of cities, where you'll meet an artsy, bon-vivant bunch looking to escape the summer heat. Perhaps the most transformative addition of all is the new hotel, most of whose 124 rooms have pool-facing portholes for prime people-watching. The mostly neutral colors (browns and creams) and modern design scheme of the interior offsets the pop-y yellows blues and whites of the pool area. Its lobby is a mélange of styles: industrial exposed ceiling, Art Deco furniture, and a graffiti-splattered Rolls-Royce—perfect to set the scene for a place that's used to making history.

Maison Proust Arrow

Themed hotels devoted to literary giants may be nothing new. Happily, the uber-stylish 23-suite Maison Proust belongs to another rarefied category, designed for an international luxe clientele who appreciate beauty, art, history, and—why not?—love. In other words, not just for book snobs or self-proclaimed esthetes. And it’s perfectly okay if you’ve never read a single page of Proust. The subtle conjuring of the French novelist is more about the Belle Époque atmosphere, as glowing with exquisite detail as the writer’s haunting seven-volume masterwork  In Search of Lost Time . When you step inside this gorgeously restored six-story townhouse, set back on a quiet street in Le Marais, guests are immediately caught up in the enchantment—an enveloping whoosh of exoticism—where, in the blink of an eye, you gaze in wonder at the sumptuously furnished Belle Époque salon/bar and slide a century back in time. —Lanie Goodman

Château Voltaire Arrow

Previously the administrative headquarters for Zadig & Voltaire spanning three buildings from the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries, the hotel is fashion designer Thierry Gillier’s first foray into the hotel industry. He tapped the right talents to bring his interpretation of Parisian elegance and hospitality to life, including the designers behind Festen Architecture known for skillfully updating historic spaces and designing hotels that feel more like private residences (such as  Les Roches Rouges and Le Pigalle). There’s no standard room given that the property is composed of three different buildings from three different periods. But some details are shared, from fringed velvet furnishings, nature-inspired rugs, seashell light fixtures (which nod to the 16th century ornamentation on the hotel’s listed façade), bespoke headboards, solid oak wall lights, manor-style woodwork, and a soft, earthy color palette. The minibar is a compelling decorative  touch on its own, set inside a dedicated cupboard and features an array of local, gourmet snacks, antiqued wine and cocktail glasses, and an anniversary edition of the 1935 Illy espresso machine for your morning and afternoon coffees.

Set in a neoclassical former private residence and surrounded by a sizable structural garden, Paris’ s only château-hotel underwent a radical decorative transformation last year—courtesy of Laura Gonzalez, who made it feel like a one-of-a-kind Parisian home once again. The 50 rooms and suites are perfect examples of Gonzalez’s maximalist design style: Think nature-inspired wallpapers, ornate moldings, and plush fabrics in mixed colors and textures. The wellness program also got a total reboot and was relaunched in 2021 as a three-room Guerlain spa, with large vaulted spaces, a stone staircase, and an aesthetic reminiscent of Greco-Roman thermal baths .

InterContinental Paris Le Grand Arrow

The ornate, Beaux-Arts frame of the InterContinental Paris Le Grand has been around since 1862, when the building was first inaugurated as Le Grand Hotel. Since then, its reputation for grandeur, along with its prime location—just across the avenue from the gilded Palais Garnier, home to the Paris Opera—has made it a magnet for international royalty (Tsar Nicholas and Tsarina Alexandra, King Edward VII of England) and regular, if well-heeled, folk alike. But it's the buttoned-up Café de la Paix, housed on the ground floor of the hotel, that should shimmy to the top of your to-do list: Not only is the foie gras first-rate, but if you sit out on the terrasse long enough, you might start to soak in the genius of Émile Zola or Guy de Maupassant, just a few of its former patrons.

Kimpton St Honoré Arrow

In the shadow of the  Palais Garnier , the hotel immediately draws onlookers with its preserved Belle Epoque façade, trimmed with turquoise metal, embellished with stylized floral patterns, marble panels, copper and wrought iron balconies, and arched bay windows that once housed product displays when it was a department store (more on that below). On the inside, soaring volumes and historic decorative touches serve as chic eye candy. This is the first Kimpton property in France and sets a high design bar in a listed Art Deco building on the historic Boulevard des Capucines. Much of the historic (former department store) interior remains intact; the imposing spiral stairway, interior balconies, mezzanine-level alcoves and monumental period elevators. But the design scheme throughout, led by local design darling Charles Zana, elegantly updates the Art Deco style of 1930s luxury hotels through French artisans to contribute to the Parisian pied-à-terre esthetic. Perhaps the most un-Parisian place in the building is the 190 seat Montecito restaurant designed by Humbert & Poyet that channels Palm Springs insouciance; the main dining room is built around a patio with a photo-worthy green wall, and furnishings pop in a refreshing seaside color palette. The Cali-inspired menu has dishes you’re not likely to find at other Parisian hotels such as fish tacos, crab cakes, and huevos rancheros for breakfast.

The Palais Royal Gardens are many people's favorite place in Paris. Their number two? The Grand Hôtel du Palais Royal, the only one in the area with views over the gardens. The 57 rooms and 11 suites, Pierre-Yves Rochon-designed confections of light greens, powdery pinks, velvet, leather, and silk, are managed more like they're part of a family-owned boutique property; really, it feels like a series of apartments, complete with elegant, understated design schemes, and just enough space to feel like you're at home. It's affordable luxury in one of the very best locations in the city. Another happy surprise is Le Lulli Restaurant, a fine dining option set in a beautiful, garden-inspired dining room.

Le Bristol Paris Arrow

Yes, Le Bristol is grand—the polished marble, the Louis XVI armchairs, the boiserie -paneled walls—but it has never felt cold or stuffy. I tend to go for Paris Fashion Week, and any sense of froideur is eliminated with one stroke of Fa-raon, the fluffy white Burmese cat and unofficial hotel mascot (he’s since had a son and heir, called Socrate)—usually draped over the concierge’s desk. Le Bristol has had a stylish insouciance ever since it opened on rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré in 1925, and it held on to its gilded soul after a six-year facelift that was unveiled in 2018 by its owners, the Oetker Collection. Suites are about chandeliers, Pierre Frey fabrics, and a very pure devotion to comfort overlooking the wonderfully serene enclosed garden by Arabella Lennox-Boyd, with its geometric lawns, fountains, and osmanthus topiaries. Eric Fréchon’s macaroni with black truffle and duck foie gras at three-Michelin-starred Epicure is a thing of wonder, as is Café Antonia, where the fashion crowd all seem to order the green bean, artichoke, and hazelnut salad. The spa by La Prairie does possibly the best massage in Paris.

Hôtel Lutetia

Hôtel Lutetia Arrow

After some topsy-turvy years, Left Bank Art Nouveau institution Hôtel Lutetia reopened in 2018, and now looks better than it did when James Joyce wrote bits of Ulysses here, thanks to architect Jean-Michel Wilmotte and collaborators such as Francis Ford Coppola . Determined to honor Lutetia’s glamour, Wilmotte cut the room count down to 184 and enlarged the 47 suites, adding Hermès silk throw pillows, Art Deco-style pieces by Poltrona Frau, and Statuario marble in the bathrooms; the bigger rooms have balconies with views of the Eiffel Tower . Yet in keeping with Lutetia’s social legacy, special attention was given to the public spaces. The famous bar that lured in the luminaries is now Joséphine—named for Baker, also a regular—with a menu that includes Champagne-topped vodka cocktails and croque caviar toasted sandwiches. Chef Patrick Charvet, a veteran of Michelin-starred kitchens, dishes up poached langoustines and oysters soaked in aloe vera at Brasserie Lutetia, while exquisite pastries are served inside the sun-flooded Saint Germain salon just as in Joyce’s day, but now under a graffiti-colored glass roof by conceptual artist Fabrice Hyber. With Paris’s hotel scene skewing more boutique by the minute, Lutetia’s masterful restoration reminds us that this has always been a grande-dame city at its core. Doubles from $1,005.

Hôtel Les Deux Gares

Hotel Les Deux Gares Arrow

It’s hard to imagine that a single corner of the French capital has been left unexplored by hoteliers over the past decade. But, as proven by Adrien Gloaguen’s latest spot in unsung Little India, there are still overlooked pockets to be happened upon. When he first visited the site, then a glum two-star number, and saw the skyline views over the train tracks linking two of the city’s main stations , he knew that he could make something special of it—and that the right person for the job would be British wunderkind Luke Edward Hall. The interior designer’s first hotel project is full of joy, with nods to the past everywhere but also contemporary excitement. The Haussmann-style corner building is awash with bold color combinations, which is what drew the creative crowd who booked out the place even before it opened. “It’s my own, very personal and playful take on Parisian style,” says Hall. French antiques sit next to mid-century lamps; checkerboard contrasts with leopard print, and there are seventies geometric carpets alongside Art-Deco details. Edward Hall also transformed the tired bar across the street into the Café Les Deux Gares. The bistro already has a following of locals and food writers who feast on a lunch menu of plates, such as succulent pork loin with beetroot, washed down with natural wines. It takes a bold move to persuade savvy travelers to loiter near the stations, but the duo behind this hotel have cracked it.

Mandarin Oriental Paris

Mandarin Oriental, Paris Arrow

Transport yourself out of Paris with this high-gloss hotel, where the past—charming, though it is—doesn't trump the present. You might call it another elegance; but it makes sense that this would be the case at a Mandarin, where the codes for 'luxury' are different, where guests and staff alike swear by impeccable service from start to finish; stylish modern decor; and high-class dining and spa options. The unapologetically modern Thierry Marx overseeing Sur Mesure and Camélia is another way to bridge the divide: having him on board is a clear nod to the local culture and culinary prowess, but his inventiveness and diverse culinary background matches the hotel's contemporary spirit. Another feature that sets Mandarin apart? The to-go Cake Shop located at the entrance to Camélia, one of the only properties in Paris that has this on offer.

Hôtel Le Grand Mazarin Arrow

Martin Brudnizki, the designer who has been everywhere this past year, is all about stories—and few are as seductive as the idea of an aristocratic-era literary salon in the Marais, just moments from the Seine and the Hôtel de Ville and opposite the BHV Marais, surely Paris’s most fun department store. At Le Grand Mazarin—from Maisons Pariente, the group behind chic stays such as Provence’s Hotel Crillon Le Brave—the sense is of being in a film about a sumptuous 14th-century hotel, all pastels and layers of velvet and embroidery; everything a little softer than other recent Brudnizki projects in Soho or on New York’s Fifth Avenue. It’s built in the round with a stunning glass atrium winter garden at its heart. A bijou indoor pool (a rarity in central Paris) is overlooked by a free-form forest mural by in-demand artist Jacques Merle, and the hammam and spa specialize in extra-speedy treatments. The restaurant, Boubalé, is run by Michelin-starred chef Assaf Granit with a menu paying homage to the Ashkenazi cuisine of his parents’ heritage: Kurdish kreplach cooked in beurre blanc, potato pierogi, pickled herring, and mamaliga (polenta). Tucked away in the basement is the perfectly dinky Le Bar de Boubalé, which oozes relaxed sophistication but with a dash of Wes Anderson–style whimsy. From $505. —Viv Groskop

Brach

Brach Arrow

The staid 16th (arrondissement) hasn’t exactly drawn visitors over the years. So it’s a testament to the cool factor of Evok Hotels that it can take a former mail-sorting facility in this bourgeois, residential district and make it le talk of Paris . After a four-year renovation overseen by designer Philippe Starck, the resulting hotel is as much about a lifestyle as it is a place to crash. For one thing, the buzzing restaurant draws fashionable locals from breakfast until the early hours with its patisserie, plates to share, and potent drinks. A terrace bar lures the pretty people, as does the rooftop vegetable garden, which doubles as a place to picnic and take in views of the city. The subterranean fitness club channels a ’30s boxing gym and had a wait list the minute it opened. Even the swimming pool booms with a killer sound system. The party continues in the rooms, each with its own mini concept store (the minibar is so 2018), stocked with pre-made cocktails by the Avantgarde Spirits Company. The design smacks of Starck’s typical sassy eclecticism: walls covered in rich rosewood and leather, African masks and Maasai-style beadwork, and potted cacti next to the bathroom sinks hewn from unfinished blocks of marble. Who knew that the 16th, of all places, would become the city’s next hip address?

Nolinski Paris

The Nolinski feels almost too cool—in a good way—for the neighborhood. The Jean-Louis Deniot interiors balance an aristocratic look with playful touches (take the Grand Salon, which matches polished-brass Deco-style tables with an electric-teal piano). This is high-comfort too: a candle-lit spa awaits you downstairs, and you'll find a deep bathtub in your enormous bathroom. Almost everything is available for purchase, in case you fall so in love with the linens you need them at home. The location and the design are unbeatable, and they come at a price point far more accessible than Paris's Palace hotels.

After sitting empty for decades, a former 1908 hotel has been transformed into the first Parisian outpost for the Hong Kong-based Peninsula brand—and one of Paris’s newest Palace-grade hotels. Four years of work by a stable of skilled artisans has resulted in airy, refined public spaces, where a muted cream palette is accented by restored original wood, decorative stone work, and 40,000 pieces of gold leaf. And with six in-house dining venues, you hardly have the venture out: Standouts include LiLi, serving Cantonese cuisine (including a range of dim sum); the sixth-floor L’Oiseau Blanc, a two-Michelin-star indoor/outdoor French restaurant themed around the early days of aviation; and Le Bar Kléber, where original 1908 oak paneling, oversized mirrors, and terrace views set a sexy scene for cocktails.

Le Meurice, Dorchester Collection Arrow

Ageless Le Meurice has always been tolerant of experimentation and eccentricity. No wonder it was Salvador Dalí’s favorite. Most of its suites, including the penthouse, Belle Étoile, have been redone in silk and velvet. Set just off the Tuileries Garden , the iconic spot—considered one of the first luxury hotels in the world when it opened in 1815—has a long history with the art world, from hosting Picasso's wedding dinner to, most famously, serving as the Persistence of Memory painter's Parisian home for over three decades. When renovating the Dorchester Collection hotel in 2016, father-daughter design duo Philippe and Ara Starck looked to Dalí for whimsical inspiration, so you'll now find classic elements like stately columns, marble-topped tables, and copper-rimmed mirrors balanced by original Eero Saarinen Tulip chairs and portraits of 18th-century personalities traced on the backs of leather seats. If you value location, are interested in design, and appreciate service that puts a premium on privacy, Le Meurice is worth the splurge.

Hôtel de Crillon, A Rosewood Hotel Arrow

Like the Ritz , Hôtel de Crillon, A Rosewood Hotel is a case study in how to stay relevant in the 21st century. But while the Ritz carried on in the same splendid fashion as always, the Crillon blasted off in search of something new. The result is a fascinating postmodern triumph. In the end, the refurb took four years and the hotel reopened in 2017 under the Rosewood brand. The best of what was the best of the Crillon has been thoughtfully preserved, while the best of what is new (the bar, the barbershop, L’Ecrin restaurant, and the stupendous suites by the late Karl Lagerfeld) is gobsmacking in its boldness and daring. After a day out on the town, relax in the Les Ambassadeurs lounge, which draws see-and-be-seen Parisians with live music and a selection of over 100 Champagnes, or in the spa, with its indoor heated pool and treatments inspired by the beauty secrets of French grandmothers and great-grandmothers. The Crillon has long been a sentimental favorite among the French. Monsieur George Hotel Spa Hotel Paris

Greek magnate Umbert Saltiel religiously went to Blake’s Hotel in London , Anouska’s Hempel’s first hotel, which she opened in 1978, every week for years on end. When it came to transforming his own latest hotel, in a handsome Hausmann building in Paris just a beat from the Champs-Élysées, he wanted no one else. His son, Nicolas, tracked down the onetime Bond Girl-turned-designer, otherwise known as Lady Weinberg, and convinced her to take on the project. And as ever, she doesn’t do things by half. Her exacting attention to detail is obvious everywhere—"If you’re alive, you have to try and be the best," she says—in a riot of jade, emerald, and forest green, black lacquered paint, chevron tiles, and marble, and so many mirrors your perspective shifts as you move. A small but cleverly constructed space, the 46 rooms are spread over six floors. Décor is a mishmash of Anoushka’s travels. Moroccan in essence, offset with Indian lanterns and ikat prints from Romania; moody and sultry. Lady Weinberg is so obsessed with lighting, she added a Perspex filter to light bulbs by the bed to achieve the perfect soft glow. In the basement, cult Parisian yoga and wellness club Le Tigre doles out soothing massages, while restaurant Galanya looks to Asia with yellowtail sashimi, prawn ravioli, beef tataki, and cod with Japanese mushrooms cooked with precision. Much like the entire hotel, nothing is an accident or left to chance; it’s an orchestra of taste, all conducted by Lady Weinberg herself. It’s an opulent addition to the Parisian scene.

Cour des Vosges Paris France Hotel

Cour des Vosges Arrow

On the Monopoly board of Paris , there could be no address smarter than the Place des Vosges in the Marais. It’s the city’s oldest and prettiest square: Louis XIII and Anne of Austria celebrated their engagement here in 1612; it was the site of trysts and duels during the 17th and 18th centuries; and in 1832 the great writer Victor Hugo moved into number six, overlooking the pleached lime trees and fountain-punctuated lawns. Across at number 19, the heavy unmarked door doesn’t give any clue that it conceals one of Paris’s most intriguing new arrivals. Cour des Vosges takes the now familiar home-as-hotel set-up and elevates it gloriously but discreetly. It marks a clear departure for Evok Hôtels, whose other haunts (Sinner, Brach ) are more showy and dramatic. The ultra-private, Roman-style bath on the lower level is open day and night, while four-poster beds with panels that close to shut out daylight and mini-bars loaded with pastries make this a rare Parisian bolthole that encourages lazing about.

ShangriLa Hotel Paris

In 1891, Prince Roland Bonaparte—grand-nephew to Napoleon—chose a prime setting near the Seine River to build an opulent palace, complete with an elaborate carved façade, a vaulted ceiling emblazoned with zodiac symbols, and a dramatic "Stairway of Honor" made from brass and forged steel. The cultured prince hosted many a lively gathering at his palace—a tradition of hospitality that was revived in 2010, with the opening of the Shangri-La Paris. Following a meticulous restoration, the landmark features a dome-topped marble entryway, original wood floors, stained glass windows, and hand-carved mahogany panels—plus that famous staircase. It's not just pretty, either: A favorite destination dining spot for locals, the hotel houses Shang Palace, the first Chinese restaurant in France to receive a Michelin star, and La Bauhinia, which serves an elegant East-meets-West menu (including a popular afternoon tea) under the central glass cupola.

The third hotel from Paris’s charmingly raffish Experimental Group, who opened the cheeky Grand Pigalle and London’s perky Henrietta after establishing cocktail bars around the world, may be the most irresistible yet. The Hôtel des Grands Boulevards is tucked away in the 2nd Arrondissement, one of the most diverse and dynamic parts of the city. It’s where to find ornate theaters and arcades as well as whimsical textile workshops, and a healthily quirky dose of les flaneurs moving between them all. Staying at this converted 18th-century townhouse places guests properly amongst the muck, and with three bars and restaurants from which to watch the daily life unfold with an elderflower cocktail in hand, naturally. Interior designer Dorothee Meilichzon took her cues from the neighborhood when decking out the 50 rooms with textures, shapes, and colors. Petite guestrooms have luscious greens, blues, and pinks; against this palette the plump all-white beds seem like fluffy, cozy clouds. Tiny wooden stools near windows with ball-gown length drapes create the atmosphere of a Parisian parlor. Though when the bustle of the 2nd all gets a little too much, the ideal escape is on the rooftop, where gin joint The Shed serves a mean vodka with lemongrass to young locals who will no doubt be dressed better than yourself. Paris rarely feels as fun as it does from the inside of a hotel run by a bunch of bartenders.

Hôtel du Petit Moulin Hotel

Hôtel du Petit Moulin Arrow

Don't get confused by the vintage boulangerie signage: you're in the right place. Set in two connected 17th-century buildings—one the former home of one of Paris's first bakeries—the Hôtel du Petit Moulin feels like an insider's secret that's hiding in plain sight. The four-star charmer as been decked-out by fashion designer Christian Lacroix, so from the reception (located in the ersatz bakery) to the 17 rooms, the decor is bold, eclectic, and bursting with personality.

Mob Hotel Paris Interior room

Mob Hotel Arrow

Taking inspiration from Paris’s largest flea market, located about a 10-minute walk away, the eclectic Mob Hotel is awash in boho chic and bursting with creative energy. The experience starts at reception, which doubles as a shop stocking everything from snacks and stylish accessories to the odd guitar, and continues out to the backyard, where the restaurant’s terrace overlooks a garden that hosts al fresco movies in the summer, and turns into an ice skating rink in the winter.

Hôtel Raphael Arrow

Family-owned and operated since 1925 (it's now watched over by the fourth generation), this boutique five-star's intimate take on luxury has garnered it a legion of regulars, including a fair share of boldface names. Though the vibe is discreet, the public spaces are hardly subtle: Oriental rugs, trompe l’oeil walls, rich wood paneling, and antiques and artwork from the family’s collection.

Hotel Particulier Montmartre Paris

Hôtel Particulier Montmartre Arrow

Down a quiet cobblestoned street, past an unmarked gate, through the second door of a 19th-century mansion, and you’re home. Once the residence of people with last names like Rothschild and Hermès, this refuge has been transformed by Oscar Comtet, a young entrepreneur with a dynamic vision and keen eye, into the ultimate private hideaway.

Chouchou Hôtel Paris

Chouchou Hôtel Arrow

In the heart of the Opera district, just blocks from the Palais Garnier and other historic performance arts venues, as well as the iconic Galeries Lafayette department store, Chouchou aims to be both a gathering spot for locals and a place of respite for travelers. Named for a French term of endearment, Chouchou opened in fall 2020—a launch that was delayed just a few months due to the pandemic. The 63 rooms are divided into five categories, from single to suite, and vary in size and shape, but all have a thoughtful design full of eye-catching details, from parquet floors and lush textiles to bold splashes of color. Views are either of the courtyard or street (a few even look out at the Opera), and some categories come with balconies.

“Shahin, Just a quick note to let you know how much we enjoyed the tour of the Loire Valley [Custom Loire Valley Day Tour from Paris of 2 chateaux and 1 wine estate]. Let me start by saying the best part of the trip was meeting you and listening and learning about the history of France and specifically Chenonceaux. Your comments and guidance throughout the day made the experience far more than just a sight-seeing trip. Lunch was great and so were Amboise and the wine tasting. I can’t thank you enough for putting this tour together for us, we will enjoy the memories for years to come. Merci beaucoup,”

10. ADMIRE THE NOTRE-DAME CATHEDRAL

Notre Dame de Paris is arguably the most famous religious monument in the world and widely considered one of the finest examples of French Gothic architecture. The cathedral suffered desecration during the radical phase of the French Revolution in the 1790s, when much of its religious imagery was damaged or destroyed. During the 19th century, an extensive restoration project was completed, returning the cathedral to its previous state. Unfortunately, a destructive fire ravaged the cathedral on April 15th, 2019, destroying the iconic spire and the original wooden roof of the building. However, the eighteenth-century organ and two bell towers remain in-tact, and can still be seen standing from afar. Officials anticipate the Notre-Dame will remain closed for another five to six years before it is once again rebuilt and safe to enter.

9. ATTEND A CONCERT AT THE OPERA HOUSE

Commissioned by Napoleon III and completed in 1875, Charles Garnier’s architectural masterpiece Palais Garnie is one of the most iconic opera houses in the world. Although most of the Paris Opera’s productions now take place in the larger and more modern Opéra Bastille, visitors can still attend a concert or take a tour of the public areas of the theater. The façade is richly ornamented with marble arches and colonnades, grotesque masks and gilded statues. The interior is no less opulent. Frescoes, gold leaf, mosaics and sculptures adorn every room, and the lavish auditorium (Grande Salle) – with all red velvet seats and gilded moulding – has a ceiling painted by Marc Chagall in 1964. The Palais Garnier provided the inspiration for Gaston Leroux’s novel The Phantom of the Opera . The book mentions a subterranean ‘lake’ created by the architect to stabilize the building’s foundation. There is indeed a water tank beneath the building, but it is off limits to the general public.

8. MAKE A DAY TRIP TO VERSAILLES

Versailles, which has been on UNESCO’s World Heritage List for 30 years, is one of the most beautiful achievements of 18th-century French art and one of the most famous palaces in Europe . The site, located some 20 km (12 miles) southwest of Paris and easily reachable by public transport, began as Louis XIII’s hunting lodge before his son Louis XIV (known as the Sun King) transformed and expanded it, moving the court and government of France to Versailles in 1682. Each of the three French kings who lived there added improvements to make it more beautiful. The château lost its standing as the official seat of power during the French Revolution in 1789. However, it still serves political functions today as heads of state are regaled in the Hall of Mirrors, ad French politicians meet in congress here to revise or otherwise amend the French Constitution. With the gardens and the Palaces of Trianon, the magnificent park of the Château de Versailles spreads over 800 hectares.

7. GET LOST IN THE LATIN QUARTER

The Latin Quarter is situated on the left bank of the Seine and is one of the oldest districts in Paris. The area takes its name from the Latin language, taught in the Middle Ages at many schools in the district. Parisians and tourists enjoy exploring this vibrant, artsy, and eclectic quarter, which is full of cosmopolitan restaurants, cafes, pubs and quirky boutiques. It’s also easy to get lost in the quarter’s maze of tiny, cobble-stone alleys, evocative of medieval Paris. Awaiting discovery are ancient churches, botanical gardens, the world-famous Sorbonne University, and the imposing Pantheon, the resting place of great figures of the nation such as Victor Hugo, Voltaire, Rousseau, and Pierre and Marie Curi. On the border of the Latin Quarter, you’ll find the beautiful Luxembourg Gardens, which were inspired by the Boboli Gardens in Florence and created upon the initiative of Queen Marie de Medici in 1612.

6. WALK ON THE CHAMPS ELYSEES

Known as the ‘most beautiful avenue in the world’, the Champs Élysées has been synonymous with luxury and prestige for more than 100 years and is lined with cinemas, restaurants, and cafés. It is a showcase for France’s top brands such as Louis Vuitton, Guerlain, Ladurée, Dior, Lacoste, Cartier, Galeries Lafayette, as well as PSG and Séphora, open 7/7 and until late in the evening. On the first Sunday of each month, the avenue is closed to motor traffic and becomes the loveliest promenade in the world, for pedestrians and cyclists. At the top of the avenue, on Place Charles-de-Gaulle, is the Arc de Triomphe, a monument from the 19th century commissioned by Napoleon, as a tribute to his troops. At the start of the Champs Élysées is Paris’s largest square, the Place de la Concorde, home to a 3,200-year old Egyptian obelisk. During the French Revolution, more than 1,000 people were guillotined on the square, including Louis XVI, Marie-Antoinette, and Robespierre.

5. VISIT MUSEE D’ORSAY

Musée d’Orsay is internationally renowned for housing the largest collection of Impressionist and post-Impressionist masterpieces in the world, by painters including Monet, Manet, Degas, Renoir, Cézanne, Seurat, Sisley, Gauguin, and Van Gogh. Many of these works were held at the Galerie nationale du Jeu de Paume prior to the museum’s opening in 1986. The museum’s collections represent all expressive forms, from painting to architecture, as well as sculpture, the decorative arts and photography. You’re sure to be dazzled by the beauty of the place: a train station that looks like a palace, inaugurated for the 1900 Universal Exposition. At the end of 2011, the museum reopened all of its entirely renovated spaces as well as some new rooms: Post-Impressionist artists at the heart of the museum, the redesign of the Impressionists gallery, a new temporary exhibition space, plus a new ‘aquatic’ decor for the Café des Hauteurs, designed by Brazilian designers, the Campana Brothers.

4. EXPLORE MONTMARTRE

Featuring cobblestone streets, street art, and lively bistros, Montmartre is full of charm. Perched on the top of a small hill in the 18th arrondissement, the most famous Parisian district has lost none of its village atmosphere that appealed so much to the artists of the 19th and 20th centuries. A real melting pot of art and inspiration for the cinema, Montmartre still gives as much pleasure to those who stroll around it and figures high on the list for a stay in Paris. Montmartre’s top attraction is the Sacré-Cœur basilica, a place of worship in Romano-Byzantine style dedicated to the heart of Christ. For anunobstructed view over Paris, nothing beats the view from the forecourt of the building or, even better, that from the top of its majestic dome. Also, if there is one film associated with Montmartre, it is ‘Le Fabuleux Destin d’Amélie Poulain.’ This internationally-acclaimed film by Jean-Pierre Jeunet renders all the charm of the legendary district on the big screen. The cafe where Amélie worked still exists!

3. CLIMB THE EIFFEL TOWER

Also known as the Iron Lady, the Eiffel Tower (la Tour Eiffel) symbolizes the grandeur of Paris. Named after the engineer Gustave Eiffel, the tower was constructed from 1887 to 1889 as the entrance to the 1889 World’s Fair. It was initially criticised by some of France’s leading artists and intellectuals for its design, but it has become a global cultural icon of France and one of the most recognisable monuments in the world. The tower is 324 metres (1,063 ft) tall – about the same height as an 81-story building – and is comprised of 18,000 iron parts held together by 2.5 million rivets. Climbing the Eifel Tower is a highlight for many visitors to Paris: observation decks on the 1st, 2nd and top floor offer incredible panoramas over the City of Light. Be prepared though for long winding security lines and long waiting times for the elevators to get up the tower (booking your ticket online is highly recommended).

2. STROLL ALONG THE SEINE

Since the Gaulish Parisii tribe settled here in Roman times, Paris has been built up on either side of the Seine. The history of the city’s development can be followed along the banks of the river, which are a UNESCO World Heritage site. From historic monuments and architectural gems to waterfront developments, this walk – or cycle ride – will take you on a journey back in time. You can cross from one side to the other by one of the 37 bridges that connect the two sides of the city. This includes famous bridges like the majestic Pont Alexandre III (built in 1891 to celebrate the Franco-Russian alliance) and the Pont Neuf (Paris’ oldest bridge whose construction began in 1578). The riverside walk is especially beautiful on a warm and sunny spring or autumn day, when thousands of Parisians and tourists are flocking to the Seine’s riverbanks to enjoy the romantic views and have a drink.

1. SPEND A DAY AT THE LOUVRE

A visit to the Louvre lets you discover Western art from the Middle Ages to 1848, as well as a large number of ancient civilizations. Long before it became a museum, the building was the residence of the kings of France: first a dark fortress and then a stately palace home to French heads of state until 1870. After being redesigned, partially destroyed, and then rebuilt many times over, today it is a museum open to everyone. From here you can see the grand perspective stretching through the Tuileries Gardens and up the Champs Élysées. Considered to be one of the greatest museums in the world , visitors flock to the Louvre to see its extraordinary collections and incomparable masterpieces: Leonardo da Vinci’s ‘Mona Lisa’ of course, but also the ‘Venus de Milo’, the ‘Victory of Samothrace’, ‘Liberty guiding the People’ and the ‘Raft of the Medusa’, which are just some of a collection of more than 460,000 works, from ancient civilizations to the 1840s.

Le Grand Mazarin

le grand mazarin view of hotel room feauting a light green sofa vintage wood and carpet

Inspired by the Grand Siècle classicism, Le Grand Mazarin is the result of architecture designer Martin Brudnizki's impeccable creations. Colours of sage green sweep each bedroom, contrasting against vintage wood furniture and Pierre Frey fabrics. Inside the hotel's restaurant Boubalé, you'll find delicious recipes made by the Michelin-starred chef Assaf Grantit and interiors to match. The bar too is not without warm, vibrant patterns and colours, which make ending your day with friends and loved ones all the better.

Hôtel Plaza Athénée

best luxury hotels in paris

With its instantly recognisable facade laced with ruby red blossoms, Hôtel Plaza Athénée has been a playground for famous faces from Marilyn Monroe to Jackie Kennedy since its doors opened in 1913. Located opposite Dior's flagship boutique on Avenue Montaigne, this storied (and possibly the most well-scented) hotel offers seven floors of pure opulence with 208 rooms modelled after resplendent Parisian apartments. Chandeliers, sumptuous textiles and Guerlain bathroom amenities? Check, check and check.

Restaurants at the Plaza are overlooked by Chef Jean Imbert, a culinary star who counts Pharell and Beyoncé as firm fans. Spend languid afternoons in La Cour Jardin where meals are inspired by the relaxed vibe of the South of France (the courtyard transforms into a winter wonderland for the festive season) and end your evening with a hearty meal either at Le Relais Plaza (Yves Saint Laurent was a regular) or sample the lobster at Jean Imbert au Plaza Athénée. Non-drinkers will revel in the delightfully refreshing champagne alternative, L'Antidote. For breakfast, we can't recommend the signature Pain Perdu (French toast) enough.

The Plaza's prime location is a stone's throw from the city's most breathtaking sights such as the Seine river, the Grand Palais and of course the Eiffel Tower. Its close proximity to some of the fanciest designer boutiques and Champs-Élysées makes it a prime location for style stars and haute couture clientele alike.

Despite its otherworldly furnishings, service at the Plaza is endlessly charming and warm - none of that stuffy, intimidating feel here. It's no wonder that it plays second home to many a regular visitor.

Hôtel Dame des Arts

best luxury hotels paris

We never need an excuse to visit Paris, but now that Hôtel Dame des Arts exists, that statement has never been more true. Opened in early 2023, this hotel has quickly become one of our favourites in the City of Love.

Comprising of 109 rooms, some with a balcony, roof-top views and a panoramic vista of the Eiffel Tower, this Raphael Navot-designed haven (think wood panels, porcelain, bamboo and glass interiors) is an unparalleled celebration of culture, art and creativity in Paris’ world of hospitality.

The hotel itself is located in the Left Bank of the city in St Germain, a stone’s throw away from Saint-Michel and Notre Dame, and comes with its own spa treatment room, fitness studio, three dining spaces – one with its own outdoor garden courtyard – and a rooftop bar with sights across Paris.

We suggest settling into the rooftop with a Spritz Des Dames Fruités or a glass or La Janasse red wine, before retiring to the restaurant to tuck into dishes including the beef tartare, cod fish with clams, king prawns, a tomato bisque and guijillo, the mushrooms, which come with a tantalising peanut mole and salted granola, before finishing with the irresistible chocolate ganache pudding with mole and coffee cream. Pure heaven.

Rooms start at £280 per night, for more information CLICK HERE

Shangri-La Paris

best luxury hotels paris

It’s not often you have the chance to stay in the former home of French royalty (or any royalty for that matter), which makes Shangri-La Paris the perfect place to unwind if you're in need for a touch of luxury and decadence. Once owned by Prince Roland Bonaparte, this exquisite five-star hotel is situated in the 16th arrondissement of the city and, without a question, has the best views of the Eiffel Tower and River Seine of any hotel in Paris.

The hotel comprises of 100 rooms and suites, one bar and two restaurants, with its interiors and cuisine a true fête of European elegance and traditional Asian beauty amid Rococo pastel-hued interiors. Guests have a plethora of rooms to choose from, be it the Terrace Eiffel view room, decorated with chinoiserie accents and the most perfect view of the Eiffel Tower we've ever seen, or the deluxe suite, with French windows that overlook the hotel’s private garden. For the gym-inclined, there’s even a spa situated in the former stables and a health club with its very own pool – a true rarity in France.

As for the food, Shangri-La Paris’ offering is second-to-none, especially given the fact it has the only Michelin-starred Chinese restaurant in France – Shang Palace – run by Chef Samuel Lee who effortlessly delights guests with Southeast Chinese delectable dishes. Meanwhile, our favourite eatery has to be La Bauhinia restaurant towards the back of the hotel, run by Chef Maxence Barbot. It's where you’ll find the perfect mélange of French South-East Asian cuisine, from the poultry and foie gras sharing plate, to the gambas pad thai, and John Dory served with a lip-smackingly good baba ganoush condiment. Following dinner (and the buckwheat mille-feuille, of course), we suggest floating on over to Le Bar Botaniste in the hotel, which is inspired by nature (expect to see myriad plant and absinthe foundations galore), for tipples including La Riviere de Cassis cocktail, inspired by France and Thailand, and the Parisian Spritz (salut, Champagne!).

One stay at Shangri-La Paris and you’ll never want to leave. You have been warned.

Room start at £1,400 a night, for more information CLICK HERE

The Peninsula Paris

best hotels paris

Situated in prime position, just a short amble away from Paris' magnificent Arc de Triomphe, and with a clear view of the Eiffel Tower, The Peninsula Paris is one of the most luxurious hotels you may ever stay in. At a starting rate of £1.6 per room, it might also be the priciest, but trust us when we tell you that the hotel is sheer, Parisian perfection, and absolutely worth it.

Bell boys in white wait under the glass parapet, ready to welcome you through the glass doors into the magnificent lobby, which houses not just the imposing gilded concierge desks, but also an eye-catching sculpture of hand-blown glass leaves suspended from the high ceilings. It's like some kind of Cinderella story but on steroids.

Everything in this spectacular hotel is enormously proportioned, from the high-backed chairs in the atrium, the metres high vases of fresh florals, through to the Lobby restaurant which feels like eating breakfast in a ball room where one ought to be wearing a set of silk gloves.

The rooms themselves are among the most generously sized in the city, and so too is the hotel's swimming pool which sprawls out across 20 metres.

If you want a truly exceptional stay, be sure to book a table at the hotel's rooftop restaurant, two Michelin-starred L'Oiseau Blanc.

Rooms start at £1,645 per night, for more information

Maison ELLE

maison elle paris

Ever wanted to really do Paris like an ELLE editor would do it? Well, now the editor experience is even closer than ever before. The ELLE International team has just revealed something pretty exciting - our first hotel under the brand Maison ELLE.

An accessible and convenient home-from-home in the heart of the city, for the fashion-forward traveller who is eager to experience it authentically.

This first Maison ELLE hotel is located in Paris' 17th district, near the Arc de Triomphe. The vibe is simple upmarket chic - think monochrome rooms with little pops of colour, clean lines, modern art a-plenty and just a three minute walk from the Champs-Elysees.

Rooms start at £212, for more information

best luxury hotels paris

Probably one of the most iconic institutions in Paris (which is hard, when you consider the venues on offer in the City of Light), the story of Fouquet's began in 1899, with a brasserie that attracted legends and merrymakers from far and wide. Revived, retold and lovingly revitalised for the 21st Century, Fouquet's brasserie now has both a celebrity chef and an incredibly chic hotel attached to it, bringing in droves of fans the world over.

The hotel could not be more perfectly situated, boldly taking up nearly a whole block of the Champs-Elysées, next to the Louis Vuitton flagship store. And if you're boujie enough to book a suite on the Champs-Elysées side, you can have your morning coffee on a balcony with a perfect view of the Arc de Triomphe. What more could you possibly ask of a weekend in the French capital?

Rooms are luxuriously decked out in Jacques Garcia's interior decor, with quilted headboards that stretch floor to ceiling, white marble bathroom suites and velvety chaise-longues that might just about swallow you whole. Despite the grandeur, don't for a second assume the hotel to be stuffy, for it also has some of the most sweet and attentive staff, and the attention to details (including personalised celebrations for birthdays and anniversaries) are second to none.

First Timer’s Luxury Weekend Getaway to Paris Guide

Many will lead you to believe that Paris is reserved only for couples madly in love; those who wander the streets arm-in-arm, kissing beneath the sparkling Eiffel Tower, and attaching a lock to a bridge. However what I’ve come to learn over the years, is that Paris also makes a fantastic girl’s trip, and that actually visiting Paris as a couple isn’t half as much fun as doing it with the ladies in your life. Whoever you’re travelling with, we’ve put together a comprehensive luxury guide on how to get the very best out of your first time in the city!

Begin by checking-in on Friday evening at Shangri-La Paris,  and then walk the short distance to the Trocadero and see the Eiffel Tower at night all lit up and sparkling brightly. Afterwards, head back to the Shangri-La for dinner at Shang Palace , the hotel’s Michelin starred Cantonese restaurant where you’ll experience some of the best Cantonese food in the world (we highly recommend ordering the Roasted whole Peking duck, as well as the Red-rice flour rolls with shrimp, and Fried eggplant glazed with gravy, sesame, and ginger).

Luxury Weekend Getaway to Paris For First-Timers

Day 1 in Paris

8:30am: breakfast at shangri-la paris.

The breakfast at Shangri-La is a very special one. They have a sumptuous breakfast buffet with freshly baked pastries and bread, as well as an a la carte menu. We recommend the french toast and the omelette.

10am: Arc de Triomphe

The Arc de Triomphe is one of Paris’s iconic landmarks and a must visit on your first trip to Paris. Make sure you book tickets in advance to go to the top of the building, as the views are spectacular.

11am: Champs Elysees

Make sure you do your shopping on the Saturday as most of the shops close on Sundays in France . Don’t miss the shopping on the Champs Elysees, especially the gorgeous Guerlain store.

12: Palais Garnier

The Palais Garnier is unmissable for those who enjoy architecture and culture. The interior is breathtaking, and was the location used in Gaston Leroux’s famous novel, Phantom of the Opera.

1pm: Lunch at Cafe de la Paix

Cafe de la Paix is right opposite Palais Garnier, and is one of Paris’s most famous restaurants. Designed by architect Alfred Armand and opened in 1862, it was a key location during the Belle Epoque era and was the setting for Robert Service’s poem “The Absinthe Drinkers”.

2:30pm: Shopping in Galerie Lafayette

For your favourite designer brands stop by the Flagship Galerie Lafayette store. It’s one of the prettiest department stores in the world, so even if you’re not much of a shopper it’s worth stopping by to view the beautiful glass ceiling and architecture.

5pm: Montmatre & Sacre Couer at sunset

On your way to the Sacre Couer get a quick photo in-front of the Moulin Rouge, and stroll around the streets of Montmatre soaking up the atmosphere. Walk up the famous steps in front of the Sacre Couer and watch the sunset over Paris.

7pm: Dinner at Hotel Amour

After sunset enjoy dinner at Hotel Amour in Pigalle.  Request a seat outside in the garden courtyard and sip on a glass of French wine whilst perusing the menu. We recommend the steak and frites, and don’t skip dessert as they are exceptionally good.

10pm: Cocktails at Krug Bar Shangri-La

Whilst you’re staying at the Shangri-La you really can’t miss the Krug Bar . This is exclusivity at its finest. The bar is located in one of the hotel’s terrace suites, so you’re able to sip on a glass of Krug – or one of their signature cocktails – whilst staring at the Eiffel Tower sparkling at night. But, to access the bar you’ll need to speak to the concierge first…

Day 2 in Paris

hotel de crillon afternoon tea paris

The location of afternoon tea at Hotel de Crillon Paris

9am: Breakfast at Eggs & Co

Seeing as you enjoyed the hotel breakfast the previous morning, get up early and order a car to take you to Eggs & Co in the Saint-Germain-des-Pres neighbourhood for a Parisian breakfast. As you might guess, eggs are the specialty here, so be prepared for a very egg-focused (but delicious) menu!

10am: Notre Dame

The queue for the Notre Dame may look humongous, but it moves very quickly. Make the most of the queue by taking in the French gothic architecture of the medieval cathedral. The interior of the cathedral is stunning with the stained glass windows and side-chapels, and the history is fascinating.

11:30am: Angelina – Hot Chocolate

A visit to Paris is not complete without hot chocolate and patisseries at Angelina on Rue de Rivoli. Their famous chocolat l’Africain tastes like melted chocolate pudding, and their patisseries rival Laduree’s.

12: The Louvre

They key is to book your tickets ahead of tim,e choose your favourite pieces located within the Louvre in advance, and head straight for them when you arrive. The museum is always packed with tourists and it can be a struggle to fight your way through them all, so knowing which pieces you want to see will ensure you get the best experience.

2pm: Afternoon Tea lunch at Hôtel de Crillon

Hôtel de Crillon is an historic palace hotel situated on the Place de la Concorde, and is the ideal place for a girl’s champagne afternoon tea in sumptuous surroundings. You’re able to choose between taking the delicious afternoon tea inside, or outside in the courtyard. This is an unmissable Parisian experience with delicate pastries and scones with apricot jam and lemon curd.

3:30pm: Jardin des Tuileries

One of the most beautiful gardens in the city, Jardin des Tuileries is opposite  Hôtel de Crillon and perfect for people watching. Walk through the pretty gardens and admire the uniformity, the variety of flowers and plants, and the ponds with sail boats gently bobbing up and down.

4pm: Musee D’Orsay

Another of the famous Parisian museums is Musee D’Orsay, and it’s home to many of the Van Gogh pieces. Similar to the Louvre, choose the key pieces you would like to see, and don’t miss the clock tower!

6pm: Pont Alexandre III Bridge

On the way back to the hotel walk over Pont Alexandre III bridge and swoon at the ornate gilded cherubs and nymphs. There’s also a fantastic view of the Eiffel Tower from here making it a great photo opportunity.

8pm: Dinner at La Gare

Restaurant La Gare is just a quick car ride away from the Shangri-La, in the la Muette neighbourhood. Located in the old Passy-La Muette train station, it was renovated into a restaurant and is now one of the trendiest fine dining restaurants in the city. The food really is exceptional, and there is surely no finer place to enjoy your last dinner in Paris.

As the capital of France, Paris has so much to offer so it’s no wonder it’s one of the most-visited cities in the world. It has a reputation as being a romantic city, which is why it’s often dubbed the City of Love as well as the City of Light. Neither name quite does it justice though. Paris is so many things so it’s hard to describe it in just three little words. Paris is chic and elegant, full of history, culture, the arts, cuisine, fashion, entertainment and luxury. There are cafes, gardens, museums, farmers markets, nightlife and so much more.

Travel guide to Paris

If you’re visiting Paris or even considering relocating there, here’s our luxury travel guide which will outline some of the main things you need to know about this wonderful and romantic city.

The Essentials

When are the Best Times to Visit Paris?

travel guide

  • Spring: The prettiest time of year to visit Paris is during the spring from April to June. Summer crowds haven’t picked up yet and you won’t be in the hottest season.
  • Summer: July and August are the hottest months in Paris, and the summer is the busiest tourist season.
  • Autumn: October to November is another excellent time to visit Paris because the weather is mild and tourism is low.
  • Winter: The cold season in Paris runs from November to February and temperatures stay below 10 degrees Celsius. Snow is common during the winter, too, and the city looks especially whimsical and pretty after a snowfall. You’ll also be treated to plenty of Christmas lights and festivities.

Paris’ weather is mild practically year-round, but it does see a lot of rainfall, as well as more extreme temperatures during the summer and winter.

While French is the most commonly spoken language in Paris, visitors will find many people also speak other European languages including English. It’s common to find people who speak English in the tourist-heavy parts of the city, but you’ll find it helpful to learn some basic French before your trip.

Like many other countries in Europe, the currency in France is the Euro. Visitors to Paris will easily find plenty of ATM’s in tourist-heavy parts of the city as well as in most hotels and restaurants. However, since some businesses and retailers won’t accept cards and ATM’s aren’t always close by, it’s a good idea to carry some cash on you.

You’ll also find it helpful to have a basic understanding of the rules surrounding. As a rule of thumb, for hotel concierges and other employees, a small tip is expected. Taxi drivers charge a set rate and do not expect a tip. Restaurants typically include a service charge in the bill, but you can add an additional tip if the experience was particularly great.

Getting Around

The Ultimate Luxury Travel Guide to Paris 2

Travelling to Paris

Getting to Paris couldn’t be easier. Many overseas visitors will fly directly into Charles de Gaulle Airport or if you’re travelling from a nearby city or another European country, then there are plenty of train routes into Paris.

From the airport, you can either take a taxi into the city or make use of the train system which has direct links into the city. This is often quicker and more convenient. Once you’re in the city, you can always get a taxi to your hotel.

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=”Text: Best Ways to Get Around Paris” _builder_version=”3.27.4″ text_font=”||||||||” text_line_height=”1.8em” header_font=”||||||||” header_2_font=”||||||||” header_2_text_align=”left” header_2_line_height=”2em” header_3_font=”||||||||” header_3_font_size=”26px” header_3_line_height=”2em” custom_padding=”||20px|” border_radii=”on|8px|8px|8px|8px”]

Best Ways to Get Around Paris

The Ultimate Luxury Travel Guide to Paris 3

One of the best ways to get around Paris is to walk. If you are staying in a central location you can easily walk to all of the main landmarks and areas you want to see. Alternatively, you can take a train or bus to a different arrondissement to explore those areas on foot. Another good way to get around Paris is to rent a bike from one of the many rental stations situated around the city.

The Metro, Paris’ underground subway system, isn’t as intimidating as it may first seem, especially with all of the useful smartphone apps you can download to get where you’re going. In addition to the Metro, you can take a bus or tram to get around the city. There’s also a late-night bus system if you’re enjoying the nightlife. If you’re venturing outside Paris for the afternoon, take a high-speed RER train.

For a truly luxurious experience, consider booking a vintage convertible and chauffeur. You may still get caught in traffic, but the ride is part of the experience, so you won’t be in too much of a rush to reach your destination. Your chauffeur may also take you on a tour of the city and share his knowledge and expertise about the area.

Where to Stay

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=”Text: Best Places to Stay in Paris” _builder_version=”3.27.4″ text_font=”||||||||” text_line_height=”1.8em” header_font=”||||||||” header_2_font=”||||||||” header_2_text_align=”left” header_2_line_height=”2em” header_3_font=”||||||||” header_3_font_size=”26px” header_3_line_height=”2em” custom_padding=”||20px|” border_radii=”on|8px|8px|8px|8px”]

Best Places to Stay in Paris

There are 20 arrondissements or neighborhoods in Paris, each a bit different from the next. Here’s an overview of the most notable arrondissements:

  • First arrondissement: Set on the right bank of the Seine, this is where you’ll see many of Paris’ top tourist sites, like the Louvre and the Palais-Royal. Most people who are visiting Paris for the first time start their experience in the first arrondissement. It’s also close to the business district and is one of Paris’ oldest arrondissements.
  • Fourth arrondissement: The Le Marais part of Paris is home to a vibrant community, art galleries and some of the city’s best hotels. It also has an excellent nightlife scene and a backdrop of Medieval Paris.
  • Sixth arrondissement: Check out this cozy neighborhood if you’re looking to move to Paris. With a classic Parisian atmosphere, the sixth arrondissement abounds with chocolate and sweet shops, cultural activities and an overall artsy vibe.
  • Seventh arrondissement: The seventh arrondissement is close to the Eiffel Tower, making it another great option if you’re visiting Paris for the first time. The neighborhood is chic and perfectly located for sightseeing.
  • Eighth arrondissement: The Arc de Triomphe, Champs-Élysées and numerous palaces are located in the eighth, and you’ll be right near the best shopping Paris offers.
  • Eleventh arrondissement: If part of your Paris experience is nightlife, you’ll want to stay in the eleventh arrondissement or at least head there once the sun sets. On top of the numerous restaurants to visit, you can also stop in to the Musée Edith Piaf.

Also consider visiting La Défense. Set on the edge of Paris, La Défense has beautiful architecture and modern art, and it’s also the main business hub of the city.

Things to Do in Paris

The Ultimate Luxury Travel Guide to Paris 4

There are a number of late-night bars and cafes to choose from, too.[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=”Text: Popular Tourist Attractions in Paris” _builder_version=”3.27.4″ text_font=”||||||||” text_line_height=”1.8em” header_font=”||||||||” header_2_font=”||||||||” header_2_text_align=”left” header_2_line_height=”2em” header_3_font=”||||||||” header_3_font_size=”26px” header_3_line_height=”2em” custom_padding=”||20px|” border_radii=”on|8px|8px|8px|8px”]

Luxury Experiences in Paris

Paris does luxury better than any place in the world, and there are so many experiences to choose from that you may have to extend your stay. We’ve mentioned several luxury experiences already, but here are a few more you might want to consider:

The Ultimate Luxury Travel Guide to Paris 6

  • Cruises on the Seine: Have dinner and wine as you cruise along the Seine, passing famous landmarks and sights during your trip. There are also glass boats that travel along the Seine, which are ideal if your main goal is sightseeing. Consider a sunset cruise, too, with accompanying piano and violin music.
  • Luxury Shopping: Few places have better shopping than Paris, and you’ll find top designers like Alexander McQueen and Chanel on the Rue Saint-Honoré. Explore the Marché aux Puces de Saint-Ouen for rare antiques and secondhand items like artwork, furniture and one-of-a-kind items. The covered Galerie Vivienne has a number of boutiques, including wine shops and the flagship Jean-Paul Gaultier store.
  • Spas: At Villa Thalgo , you can indulge in a seawater treatment by floating in a pool that’s surrounded by screens with holiday-scapes. At Biologique Recherche , you’ll get a custom skin consultation and then a treatment that’s perfectly tailored to your skin. Free Persephone is designed to look like nature, and you can get all sorts of beauty treatments, from manicures and pedicures to aromatherapy massages. Men can visit Bonhomme for skin treatments and hair services.

There are also several bespoke experiences you can arrange through a luxury travel company. You can visit a museum after-hours, have a Michelin-starred chef prepare a private dinner or meet dancers from the ballet. These can be one-day or multi-day experiences or trips.

Must See Events in Paris

There’s so much to do in Paris no matter what month you’re visiting. Here are just some of the phenomenal events you can look forward to:

  • Chinatown, which is located in the thirteenth arrondissement, celebrates the Chinese New Year (in January or February) with parades, paper lanterns and other festivities.
  • Valentine’s Day in the most romantic city on the planet is what you’d expect – specialty dinners are offered at just about every restaurant, and you can also take a romantic cruise on the Seine.
  • In March, you can attend a fair that’s been held for centuries.
  • The Paris Marathon in April welcomes athletes and spectators from around the world.
  • Head to Saint-Germain in May for the Jazz Festival.
  • Every two years, there’s an air show held in June.
  • The Tour de France comes through in July.
  • In August, you can soak up the rest of the summer with plenty of outdoor concerts and movies.
  • European Heritage Days in September give you the chance to see treasures from Paris’ many institutions.
  • In October, you can attend the Grape Harvest Festival in Montmartre.
  • Christmas markets start appearing across Paris in November.
  • During December, there are lots of Christmas celebrations to choose from, as well as classical music concerts.

Twice a year, fashion week blows into Paris, and while it’s difficult to get a seat at the biggest shows, there are accessible runway shows held at the Galeries Lafayette. The fashion crowd also congregates at the Place de la Concorde and Place Vendome, so head there to be around the buzz.

Five Landmarks Not to Be Missed on a Vacation to Paris

E mbarking on a vacation to France should be at the top of any intrepid traveler's bucket list, and Paris is a city that should not be missed on any tour of France. If you are planning on heading on a luxury vacation in France , you want to make sure that you take some time to research where to go in advance. This article will highlight some of the most fascinating and famous landmarks you should seek out to explore on a vacation to Paris.

The Eiffel Tower

Undoubtedly the most iconic landmark in the city of love and one of the most famous man-made structures in the world, the Eiffel Tower in Paris is truly a sight to behold. This stunning tower is visible from most vantage points across the entire city, but to get a true sense of its wonder, standing underneath it among the beautiful surrounding Champ-de-Mars is a must. You'll also find a Michelin-starred restaurant and panoramic champagne bar within the tower itself, which provides the perfect place to spend an evening when the tower is lit up by sparkling lights and illuminations.

The Louvre Museum

No trip to Paris would be complete without paying a visit to the largest museum in the world, the Louvre . Before heading inside, take in the simply breathtaking building in all its glory, before venturing through the museum's many galleries and stairways where you'll find over 30,000 works on display. Due to its popularity, the museum and its surroundings can often become overcrowded, so you could consider paying a visit during the extended hours on a Friday evening when it should be quieter.

Musée d'Orsay

Once a major train station within the heart of the city of Paris on the banks of the Seine, the Musée d'Orsay was opened to the public in the 1980s. You'll find a wealth of art collections on display, featuring paintings, installations and sculptures from the likes of Van Gogh and Courbet. Throughout the year, the museum plays host to a number of fascinating events and exhibitions, so it's worth having a look at what will be on when you pay a visit to Paris.

Arc de Triomphe

Standing at the center of the Place Charles de Gaulee, this magnificent world-famous monument draws tourists from across the globe to come and marvel at its splendor. The arch was built as a memorial to honor the lives of soldiers who fought for France, with the grave of the ‘Unknown Solider' sitting at the center of the arch.

Make sure you set aside some time on your luxury vacation in France to explore the unique Parisian district of Le Marais. Found just north of the Seine, this trendy area boasts a wealth of traditional French restaurants where you can sample sumptuous cuisine and fabulous glasses of wine as you watch the world go by.

Spend an afternoon taking a leisurely stroll through the many cobbled winding streets and soak up the unique atmosphere and stunning architecture around every corner. You'll also find many smaller galleries, museums and boutique vintage shops to explore and pick up those precious souvenirs to take home with you so you can cherish the memories you have made on your vacation.

Palaces, superyachts and chauffeurs: How the super rich will watch the 2024 Paris Olympics

By CNN staff | 3 days ago

By Chrissie McClatchie, CNN

This year, crowds are expected to flock to Paris for the summer Olympic games. Prices for hotel rooms are likely to skyrocket. Tickets for even the lesser events will be eagerly sought. And almost every aspect of visiting the French capital is likely to become trop cher for ordinary travellers.

For some elite spenders, however, nothing is too expensive.

Olympic luxury packages are already on sale, offering exclusive access to the sporting spectacle, alongside very upscale travel and accommodation experiences. The lucky few for whom expense is no object can expect to pay north of several hundred thousand dollars for a ringside glimpse of the games.

For instance, a North American family of five travelling to Paris for the Olympics with experiential travel company The GR8 Experience can expect to spend between $250,000 and $380,000, ($389k - $591k AUD) depending on the five-star hotel or luxury rental they choose.

These six-figure sums include 11 nights accommodation, premium seats for the opening ceremony and tickets to sports such as swimming, water polo, diving, beach volleyball, track and field and soccer. They will also enjoy VIP transport services around Paris and dedicated hosts for their time in the city

"Our clients want direct access to the most popular sporting events; gymnastics, tennis and basketball to name three," The GR8 Experience CEO and Co-Founder Barnabas Carrega tells CNN Travel . The company is seeing a record number of enquiries from its predominantly North American clientele for the two-week event.

Lovely couple spending some days in vacation to Paris close to Tour Eiffel.

With Paris' emblematic Seine river set to take centre stage during the opening ceremony as organisers swap the traditional stadium setting for a floating parade of nations, the first night is, as usual, is highest in demand — so long as it's "experienced in the most exclusive way possible," Carrega says.

"We also have some clients actually going the day prior to see the set-up [of the Opening Ceremony] for a really cool behind-the-scenes experience,' Carrega says.

GR8 says some of its clients have privately hired Ducasse sur Seine , the riverboat of Alain Ducasse, the first chef to have three restaurants with three Michelin stars, for one evening. Others will rub shoulders with Olympic executives, heads of state, A-list celebrities and past Olympic champions at the Trocadéro, where the parade will come to an end.

Tailor-made itineraries

In itineraries seen by CNN Travel , experience companies are tapping into the most exclusive packages provided by official hospitality provider On Location for tickets to Olympic events. These include access to hospitality suites which will be fully catered, with alcohol available. The general public, meanwhile, won't be able to buy alcohol as per France's strict booze ban inside sporting venues.

Tour operator Kensington Tours says it has two clients coming into Paris for the first seven nights of the Games. They'll kick off their stay watching the opening ceremony from the vantage point of Alma Bridge, with the Eiffel Tower rising in front of them. The base price for this official Bridge 360 Package is $10,300 ($16k AUD) and includes flowing Champagne, live music and meet-and-greets with Olympians in a brasserie-style setting.

Kensington says the best tickets – "gold 1st category A" – have already been secured for their clients for tennis and basketball events. On the one day they are not attending any events, they'll be whisked away on a private whiskey tasting led by a distillery owner.

AZA Luxury Travel's Angela Adto Tepper says her company has designed a whole Paris program for a family of financiers from Oahu, Hawaii, who are coming specifically to watch basketball and wrestling.

"Paris presents a wealth of opportunities for luxury travellers to indulge in during the Olympics," Adto Tepper says. "I have tailored an itinerary that includes Michelin-starred restaurants, guided curated shopping excursions in Parisian fashion districts and private tours to iconic sights like the Louvre."

Similarly, Craft Travel has organized a busy, 15-day itinerary for a family of four, including two teenagers, from New York. Among the exclusive experiences is a private concert at the Palais Garnier, Paris' gilded opera house.

"The performers will include a National Opera Ballet dancer, a classic quartet and an opera singer. A gourmet dinner will accompany the performance. Afterwards, they'll enjoy a behind-the-scenes tour of the opera house, including a visit to the costume workshop where all the magic happens," Craft Travel's director, Andrea Galvez, says.

Home in Paris for the family will be the La Réserve Apartments , just across from the Trocadéro. "They wished for a prime location and a luxurious environment that feels homey yet offers the services of a five-star hotel, and this is exactly what they'll get," says Galvez. The apartment will include a full-time attendant and a private chauffeur so they can avoid the city's already-stretched public transport network.

Palaces and superyachts

To ensure their clients have access to Paris' most prestigious hotels, many luxury travel advisers have made blanket bookings at properties across the city.

"We've contracted room blocks at eight different hotels for the full period of the games. We've then made shorter stays available inside those blocks to our guests," says Dave Guenther, president of sports travel experts Roadtrips , an Internova Travel Group company. Among those are Rosewood Hôtel de Crillon, Le Bristol Paris and the Shangri-La Paris.

Those that have snared a room at Paris' top hotels are paying top dollar for the privilege. At Le Royal Monceau Raffles Paris , one of France's ultra-prestigious "palace" hotels (a status awarded to exceptional luxury properties), its 190 square metre (2,045 sq foot) Royal Monceau Suite has been booked for the duration of the Olympic Games at a rate of $27,000 ($42k AUD) per night.

And, just like the athletes they have come to cheer on, wealthy travellers are bringing their entire entourage with them to Paris. "Some of the top suites have been personalised according to guest's décor preferences and will feature a hair and make-up area," Le Royal Monceau's General Manager Nicolas De Gols says.

"A regular guest is travelling with their personal chef and working with the hotel's culinary team to adapt the kitchen inside the suite to fit their needs, too." In front of the hotel, an area will also be designated for the guest's own fleets. "Some are travelling with almost 20 vehicles," De Gols adds.

luxury travel to paris

With other French cities such as Marseille and Nice — and even the far-flung French territory Tahiti — hosting Olympic events as well, it's hardly a surprise that superyacht charters are also trending for the games.

Fraser Yachts says Askari, a 33-meter classic yacht based in French Polynesia, has received multiple inquiries for surfing events in Teahupo'o, Tahiti.

In the Mediterranean, the Monaco-based yacht brokerage has a confirmed charter on a 27-meter motor yacht in Marseille to follow the Olympic windsurfing competition in early August and is also looking to deploy yachts from its US fleet to the Mediterranean to accommodate increased charter demand in the south of France this summer.

luxury travel to paris

The wine Olympics

Considering the choice of host nation, it seems many luxury travelers are also keen to secure allocations of gold medal-worthy wines to enjoy while in Paris. Clément Bru and Charles de Brosses, the duo behind Cookoon , a luxury gastronomic service that connects clients with Michelin-starred chefs in exclusive, private locations, say they are already seeing a high demand for fine and rare wines from incoming Olympic visitors.

"We've been contacted by an American professional sportsperson who has told us that they really like older Burgundys," Bru says. Thanks to their service's network, the pair have already been able to source a nearly 40-year-old bottle of Henri Jayer Vosne-Romanée "Cros Parantoux" — a wine that averages around $16,000 a bottle — as well as wines from another revered Burgundy estate, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti.

The wines will be served in an ultra-exclusive private property secured by the duo. "We are organizing a special evening with a leading chef and sommelier in an amazing venue with a view overlooking the Champ de Mars," Bru says.

Yet, despite their intricate network of connections, it seems like there are some requests even the most well-connected of UHNW concierges can't guarantee.

"A client of ours is interested in doing a whole behind-the-scenes experience with [US gymnast] Simone Biles," GR8's Carnega explains. "It's very complicated because she's very focused on trying to get her to win.

"But we're working on it."
