• Glenwood Springs – ​​With quick access from the Front Range, a weekend getaway to Glenwood Springs is a must-do. We love coming here because the main hot springs are very kid-friendly. Our toddler loves to splash and play – even in winter!
• Strawberry Park – Strawberry Park features a natural setting near Steamboat Springs , making it an oasis in the mountains. While it’s family-friendly during the day, at night it is clothing optional, and there are no lights after dark.
• Orvis – Orvis is by far my favorite hot spring in Colorado. It’s low-key and relaxing. My favorite visit was during a winter blizzard – totally magical to be in steamy water while the snow is falling!

Explore Garden of the Gods

The red sandstone formations are always gorgeous, but seeing Garden of the Gods dusted in snow is other-worldly!

Most of the Garden of the Gods hiking trails are easy and a lot of them link together, so you can choose your own adventure to explore the park.

Take a Winter Hike in Rocky Mountain National Park

For a classic Colorado adventure in March, head to Rocky Mountain National Park to find some of the best winter hikes in Colorado .

The hike to Emerald Lake is a must-do, and it’s especially cool when the lakes are frozen over.

March combines Spring Break for most schools around the country and peak ski season in Colorado, making traveling fairly busy this month, but totally worth it.

Not only will your ski trip be comfortable and casual, there will also be tons of activities and adventures to enjoy on a trip to Colorado in March.

Whether you’re planning a family trip for all ages to enjoy, a couples vacation or a friends ski trip, you can be confident that March is a fantastic month to visit Colorado.

Colorado Weather in March

Colorado weather in March is not too terribly different from the wintery conditions you’ll see in late February as far as the ski towns goes. However, snowmelt will begin to happen in the lower parts of the valleys and lower altitude cities. Snow covers every mountain at this point, but roadways and walkway snows may start to fade away. The air is cool and dry and there are mostly sunny days around the entire state this month.

The average daily highs will be around the mid 50’s°F (10°C) in most parts of the state and average lows will in the low 30’s°F (-1°C). However, it’s not unlikely that you’ll see a few colder days slip in depending on the weather that year. Some days, especially in higher altitude regions, will see lows closer to the high teens, around 18°F (-7°C) more often.

No matter the time of year, altitude will always be a factor when traveling to Colorado. Some towns like Alma have an elevation of 10,300′ and others like Wray have an elevation of over 3,000′. As a matter of fact, altitude sickness affects nearly 10% of all visitors. You can prepare your body by eating healthy foods, drinking plenty of water, sleeping well, resting frequently and avoiding alcohol.

Colorado Snow & Skiing in March

Snow conditions in March are excellent in most ski areas, especially the north-facing mountains, which the below resorts have plenty of. The temperatures are beginning to rise, especially in late March, so snowmelt is common in lower altitude areas, but for the most part all ski runs and mountains will still be packed with great powdery snow.

Snowstorms actually roll in pretty regularly in March, with most cities reporting March as there highest snowfall month of the year. So fresh powder on top of the existing snow pack layers will make ski conditions wonderful this time of year. Pair that with the rising temperatures and you have a very comfortable ski day planned.

While powder will be available, there will be some runs or certain areas and towns that have more slush than powder. However, Colorado’s mountains rarely have hard ice sheets despite the snowmelt. Slopes could be crowded in areas at certain points, mostly due to the Spring Breakers and those trying to get the last bit out of peak ski season.

Colorado Affordability & Crowds in March

Colorado in March will see higher numbers of visitors this month, mostly due to Spring Break and the last bit of peak ski season. While traveling here may require a decent amount of early planning, the slopes and the cities won’t feel extremely packed, though you may experience longer waits for restaurants and lift lines.

Early March tends to be busier in most places, while late March will see crowds drop off a bit for the Spring. This is the last month of Winter that has great snow conditions, so it will also mark the last month before hotel and travel rates trend downward for the slow season. You won’t be saving a lot of money with a trip in March, but you’ll certainly be in for great skiing and mild temps for outdoor recreation.

Hotel rates will vary by city, with most ski towns seeing some of the highest rates of the season, small towns being the cheapest and the capitol city of Denver averaging around $200 – $300 per night for the best hotels. Booking hotels, restaurant reservations, excursions and tours will require early planning and airfare will most likely be higher this time of year.

Best Colorado Ski Resorts in March

Telluride is consistently ranked the No. 1 Ski Resort in North America and that’s no surprise, given the excellent snow conditions. March is sure to be busy, but you can spread out over more than 2,000 skiable acres, with a vast terrain that features a mix of beginner, intermediate and advanced areas. The summit at Telluride reaches 13,150′ elevation. 

Telluride is just what you’d expect from a famous ski destination in the Rockies – with bowls, chutes, cliffs, and glades. The resort is well known for its varied expert terrain, from double blacks to chutes – and if you want “hike-to terrains”, they are accessed by metal stairs and rails. Don’t miss out on apres ski at one of their on-mountain restaurants.

Copper Mountain

Copper Mountain is not as well-known or all-inclusive as the other resorts previously listed, but it’s a great one to consider for families to enjoy together. It’s got a lot of naturally divided terrain that allows skiers of all ability levels to feel comfortable on the mountain with many designated runs for each type. It’s equipped with 2,500 acres of skiable terrain with a summit elevation of 12,315′.

Aside from skiing, Copper Mountain also has great outdoor activities with guided tours. One of the best is their snowshoeing program which is free to the public during the ski season. The multiple base areas also have many different types of accommodations, making a ski vacation on a budget very possible with this resort. Plus, it’s only 1.5 hours away from Denver.

Beaver Creek

Beaver Creek is one of the most luxurious ski resorts, built for vacationers who love to ski but enjoy loads of entertainment, dining experiences and other excursions throughout their trip. March is a great time to go for great ski conditions, as well as bustling crowds and attractions. Plus, you can easily drive a short distance to Vail just down the road.

It’s got 1,815 skiable acres with a summit elevation of 11,440′. There are also plenty of ski-in/ski-out homes and base camp hotels to choose from. Beaver Creek Ski Resort is equipped with four different village areas with their own lodging, restaurants and shopping districts, giving visitors lots of options for a stellar ski vacation.

Vail is extremely close to Beaver Creek, but even more charming and luxurious than the latter. It draws thousands from all over the world to it’s beautiful slopes each year and March is part of peak season. Skiers will enjoy terrain reaching to the 11,250′ summit and expanding over 5,000 acres of mountain.

Vail is one of the best places for both skiers and non-skiers to enjoy together. Skiers will love the various terrain that accommodates all levels, as well as the 7 miles of back bowls to explore. Non-skiers will appreciate the two main base areas with heated walkways, excellent shopping and dining options, along with beautiful luxury resort accommodations.

Winter Park

Winter Park Ski Resort is beloved by Coloradans and considered one of the most family-friendly ski resorts in the state. It’s known for being a haven for locals, but visitors will enjoy the remote and intimate setting just as much as the residents. Winter Park has over 3,000 skiable acres with a summit elevation of 12,060′.

All ability levels will enjoy the varied slopes and terrain, including tree runs, moguls and obstacles, alpine bowls and an extensive trail system. The Winter Park town itself is quite secluded and very casual, perfect for families with young kids who want to have some adventures together. The resort not only offers world-class downhill skiing, but also has tubing, cross country skiing and snowshoeing.

Breckenridge

Breckenridge Ski Resort boasts one of Colorado’s biggest ski areas with 2,908 acres of skiable terrain, a summit elevation of 12,998′, and the longest run at 3.5 miles long (most resorts have 2 mile long runs). There are suitable runs for all levels of skiers, including a 3,398 vertical drop, a 22′ superpipe and 187 different trails to experience. It’s regarded as one of the best all-around ski towns for it’s excellent slopes and great entertainment value.

March is a great time to go for snow conditions, but keep in mind that Breckenridge is one of the most visited ski resorts in the state. With 11 on-mountain restaurants to choose from, the Gold Runner Alpine Coaster and over 150 boutiques in the shopping area, there’s plenty of entertainment to fuel your vacation. 

Aspen is another popular destination in March. It’s 5,300 acres of skiable terrain with an elevation of 12,510′. The skiing acres span between several mountains, including Snowmass, Buttermilk, Aspen Mountain and Aspen Highlands, giving all abilities many slope choices.

Aspen Mountain is the ideal location for experts, offering black diamond runs just above the resort. Families with young kids and novice skiers will want to stick to Snowmass for easier terrain . Visitors love it’s impeccable nightlife atmosphere after a full day skiing, as well as the varied accommodations at two high-class resorts.

Steamboat Resort is another family-friendly town with loads of things to do. March will be busy, but you can expect some great snowpack and daily snowfall on nearly 3,000 acres of skiable terrain. Everyone of all levels can enjoy the smooth terrain, while experts can take off on the moguls, jumps and steep runs throughout the resort.

Wolf Creek Ski Resort is recommended for expert skiers who just want to shred. It’s located between Pagosa Springs and South Fork, CO and has some of the highest snowfall stats in the state on an annual basis.

It comes with 1,600 acres of skiable terrain and a summit elevation of 11,904′. Wolf Creek has multiple runs with varying terrain, including steep and rocky glades, and a limited access set of runs for experts only.

Crested Butte

Crested Butte is another off the radar town for avid skiers. The main town is three miles from the ski resort and has some fun activities and great recreation in February. It’s a great location to consider for a quick trip or casual vacation where skiing is the main goal.

The mountain features rocky cliffs, steep terrain, bowls and glades. Crested Butte will also hold freestyle championships and expert skiers will get their thrills on North America’s most advanced inbound terrain.

Best Things to Do in Colorado in March

Visit Telluride

Telluride is one of the most iconic and idyllic ski destinations that Colorado has to offer, beautifully situated in the San Juan Mountains. Aside from excellent downhill skiing, other winter activities available this time of year include backcountry skiing , nordic skiing and HeliSkiing . The area also has a number of great ice climbing locations like Bridal Veil Falls , Bear Creek and Cornet Creek Falls . Early March may be busier due to Spring Break, but later March will maintain great conditions and be a little less crowded.

Telluride’s famous gondola is a must-do activity no matter the time of year. It’s free to the public and typical operating hours are 7am to midnight. This 8-mile, 13-minute ride has an incredible 365-degree view of the San Juan Mountains and stops at several on-mountain restaurants, perfect for an apres ski at the end of the day.

The old mining town is a great place for scenic walks and shopping, as well as learning about its history. Check out the Telluride Historical Museum , or explore the National Historic Landmark District . The district is home to attractions like the Old Town Jail, the Rio Grande Southern Railway Depot and the Appaloosa Trading Company, which is the site where notorious outlaw Butch Cassidy robbed his first bank in 1889. Not only does Main Street have these historic locations, it’s also got a few shopping areas featuring local boutiques and ski brand goods.

Visit Boulder

Boulder is a well attended ski destination each year, though it may not get recognized nearly as much as places like Breckenridge, Beaver Creek and Vail on the Epic Pass . It tends to be better suited for sportsman of all types, including cycling, hiking, rock climbing, and more. Locals take pride in the sports scene in Boulder and tourists will thrill at the activities and events available in March.

Boulder hosts events from it’s International Film Festival to Winter Craft Beer Festival to St. Patrick’s Day festivities. Perhaps one of the most exciting events near Boulder in Nederland is the Frozen Dead Guy Days happening at the beginning of the month. The event occurs over one weekend, where teams come to compete in the coffin races, watch free concerts and participate in other merry festivities.

Apart from the coordinated happenings, you can plan your own fun by participating in the various adventures that Boulder has to offer. For instance, there is over 300 miles of scenic hiking in Boulder and it’s available most times of the year. While March can be a bit more iffy as far as snowy weather goes, it’s still possible for a dry hike to be accomplished.

Boulder is well-equipped as a true city, as opposed to other small towns you’ll find in Colorado, complete with art museums, historical attractions, theaters, tours and shopping districts. But those in town to ski will be pleased that the surrounding slopes are perfect for shredding powder this time of year. Since March is such a busy month, it’s recommended you ski on the weekdays and save further exploring for the weekends.

Relax at Pagosa Springs

Pagosa Springs is considered a hidden gem in the Colorado Rockies, with loads to offer tourists. March is actually considered the busy season for them, but the town is so secluded that it won’t feel overrun like other parts of the state. It’s known for being a relaxing destination with exquisite hot springs.

In the Winter while snow is still on the ground, Pagosa offers a lot of similar activities you’ll find in other Colorado small towns. You can go cross country skiing, dog sledding, fat biking, go hiking, ice climbing, ice fishing and ice skating in town. You can even partake in some excellent downhill skiing at the nearby Wolf Creek Ski Resort . But the best way to occupy your town in Pagosa Springs is to indulge in the ultimate hot springs experience.

The Springs Resort & Spa has the world’s deepest measured geothermal hot spring and grants access to all guests of the resort. This deep spring is part of a network of 24 different spring pools that can be enjoyed year round. Each pool is varies slightly from the others and comes in a range of temperatures as low as 83°F (28°C) and high as 114°F (45°C).

The Springs are open to the public, but the spa has it’s own separate pricing. Those who want the ultimate relaxing vacation can choose from a variety of treatments, including massage, facials and skin care. People of all ages will find a pool that fits their unique taste and will appreciate the additional amenities in this secluded town, like excellent dining options and historical attractions.

Get Spring Fever at Breckenridge

Breckenridge is extremely popular with skiers and non-skiers alike, so March is sure to be a busy time of year. However, the “Spring Fever” you’ll experience here is aptly named. The weather is absolutely gorgeous for a day on the slopes in March, with the overall feeling being a little more casual, the sun shining, and the atmosphere warm and fun. As a matter of fact, the town requests visitors dress in layers and bring their sunscreen this month.

Spring Fever is a month-long event that features live outdoor concerts, among other various events. Families will enjoy this special time of year in one of the top ski destinations in North America as it accommodates a range of different vacation styles. The festival includes a unique Imperial Challenge, where competitors race mountain bikes to the ski lift, hike to the top and ski down to win.

The mountain boasts 5 different peaks with lifts to each and runs for every ability. Avid skiers will have a ball on the high alpine chutes and bowls, while younger skiers will enjoy the ski classes and small slopes available to them. Breckenridge is a part of the Epic Pass, so skiers can take advantage of skiing in Vail and Beaver Creek, or even Keystone and Crested Butte.

Experience Garden of the Gods

Garden of the Gods is a national landmark near Colorado Springs, most well known for it’s extremely unique landscape with rock piles, jutting peaks and towers. There are fifteen miles of walking trails with lots of beautiful mountainous scenery, making it an excellent hiking destination.

Late March is one of the first times to go in the year, once the snow begins to melt in the area. However, the snow will not be completely gone at this point – there could even be a chance of snow flurries coming in while you’re here. The important thing is to dress appropriately.

If hiking through the snow does not appeal to your traveling party, other fun and adventurous activities include rock climbing, mountain biking and horseback riding – all of which you can do on your own or through a guided tour with the Nature Center. They also offer Electric Bike Tours, Segway Tours and Open-Air Jeep Tours.

We recommend beginning the journey at the Park Visitor & Nature Center , where you’ll get a history lesson, tour the museum and see exhibits and displays unique to the park. Afterward, you can sip on coffee and take in the scenic views through the large windows of the center, or go on one of their guided nature walks offered daily.

The parade consists of multiple bands playing Irish music, local musicians and performers, as well as Irish step dancers. Each year a young lady is also crowned “Queen Colleen” of the parade.

Colorado Springs St. Patrick’s Day Parade is similar to Denver’s featuring Irish music, bands and dancers on the parade route. They also host an annual Leprechaun Fun Run and a St. Patrick’s Day Run that you can sign up for in advance. In addition to the parade, the downtown area hosts it’s own celebration to keep the party going.

Bud Light Rocks the Boat is goin on in Steamboat Springs this week. This is an annual free outdoor concert series open to guests, drawing crowds who love everything from rock to blues.

Second Week

The second week of March is likely to feature a few days where temperatures are warmer. Blue bird days are on the horizon, where skiers can enjoy comfortable temperatures and sunny skies while shredding powder.

Lift lines and hotels are going to be pretty full at this point, since everyone’s coming to town for the premium snows at this point in the season. Ski school may be difficult to get into last minute, so plan ahead if you want to take part this month.

St. Patrick’s Day typically falls on this week in the year and you’ll likely find lots of deals and specials going on at the bars and restaurants in most towns around Colorado. Don’t miss the parades in Denver or Colorado Springs, if you happen to be visiting.

Weather is noticeably getting warmer over the course of the month, but ski conditions are still great in most areas. The snow will stay on the mountain for a bit longer but snowfall may begin to dwindle at this point.

Ski crowds and travel crowds in general are seeing their final days during this week of the month, in conjunction with the warmer temps. Garden of the Gods is a great place to chill out as the weather permits and seek nature instead of jam packed slopes.

St. Patrick’s Day specials are probably still going on at this point, but not much else in the way of special events – save for delicious apres ski drinks and food deals.

Fourth Week

At this time, the weather is definitely beginning to thaw out the mountains and most skiers will be heading out of town. Lift lines will be a little easier to manage as you enjoy the last of the ski season and great snow.

Most ski areas will begin to close at this time as Colorado starts to enter their slow season. This is a great time to take advantage of lower rates for travel expenses while still getting a little more out of the existing snow.

Whether you choose to shred the powder at great ski areas like Telluride, Beaver Creek or Copper Mountain, or attend a St. Patrick’s Day event, you’re going to have a great time in Colorado in the month of March. Crowds may be hopping this time of year, but if you enjoy lively cities and slopes, you’re in for a treat.

You can still seek out relaxation and take in the beauty of Mother Nature at more secluded areas like the Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs, or soak in the warm waters of Pagosa Springs this month. But rates and crowds will still be fairly high in this season.

It’s one of the crown jewels of Colorado in any season. In the warmer months, you’ll often find long lines to enter the park and crowded trails. If you visit Rocky Mountain in March, you’ll be greeted with a much different scene. It’s the prime month of off-season bliss. Your drive through Estes Park on the way to the park will be free of traffic, and you can explore the downtown without crowds. Once you get in, enjoy snow-covered peaks in all their glory. Without the freezing temperatures of winter. Although Trail Ridge Road is still closed until April, take the time you would have spent driving to enjoy a crowd-free day at one of Rocky Mountains most popular gems. Just outside of Grand Junction and 4 hour drive from Denver, exploring the Monument makes for one of the best weekend trips in Colorado when the weather can’t decide what it wants to do.

March Weather Denver

In the ski towns, the Denver CO weather in March is not all that different from the wintry conditions that you’ll find in late February. But in the lower regions of the valleys and the towns at lower points, melting will start to occur. 

Every peak is currently covered with snow, but the snow on the roads and walkways may begin to disappear. This month, the state as a whole has a lot of sunny days and chilly, dry air.

Colorado in March: Where to Find Snow and Sun

Colorado in March is a time of year when you can enjoy both winter and spring. The days are getting longer and the weather warmer, in between snow storms. It is a time when us mountain folk start thinking about weekend getaways to get out of the snow. But don’t be fooled, it is prime ski season. The ski slopes are hopping too.

Colorado’s March weather can be quite variable and unpredictable. During this month, temperatures can range from mild to warm, with average high temperatures hovering around 50°F (10°C). However, it is not uncommon for temperatures to reach into the 60s and even 70s during the day, especially in the lower elevations of the state. Snow is also common in March, particularly in the mountain regions of the state.

Thinking about going somewhere in Colorado in March? Here are some ideas for you!

Ski Getaways

March is peak ski season for good reason. The days are longer and a bit warmer, and snowpack is at its peak. The snow is great and the ski resorts have all of their terrain open.

For families, Snowmass , Beaver Creek and Copper Mountain are our favorite ski resorts. They have great base villages with lodges, restaurants, ice skating and more. For teens, we love Vail and Steamboat Springs. They also have base villages and more challenging terrain. For a ski day, Ski Cooper is one of our favorite mountains. There’s not much to do there other than ski, but it is an easy in and out without expensive parking.

Hot Springs

This is one of our favorite times of the year to visit Colorado’s natural hot springs . There is something special about soaking or swimming in hot mineral waters as snowflakes float down around you. Glenwood Springs may be home to the best variety of hot springs with two of our favorites: Iron Mountain Hot Springs and the Glenwood Hot Springs Resort Pool. Steamboat Springs is a bit further out, but also home to a couple of unique hot springs options. And, of course the southwestern area of Colorado is full of unique hot springs too.

With a variety of options to choose from, ranging from secluded, natural pools to luxurious resort spas, you are sure to find the perfect hot springs experience that fits your needs and interests.

Get Away to the City

For those of us in the mountains, March is when we think about getting down to Denver for a warmer weekend away. Fortunately there’s always lots of fun to be had in the city. While we have several favorite Denver hotels for families , the Gaylord Rockies is offering a spring special worth considering.

The Gaylord Rockies Welcome to Spring Package includes an overnight stay, two Spring-A-Long Scavenger Hunt booklets, two kits for making s’mores, and self-parking for one car per night. Overnight guests also receive unlimited access to Arapahoe Springs Water Park.

Arapahoe Springs, the resort’s water park complex featuring heated indoor and outdoor pools, three waterslides, and a 720-foot-long lazy river  opens for the season Friday, March 10 .  Other spring events and activities include an interactive show Adventure Kids: Sprout into Spring, the Discover Colorado Escape Room: Riches in the Rockies, a scavenger hunt, an Easter bunny meet and greet (March 3 to April 9, 2023) and Campfire & S’mores.

And, if you haven’t been to Meow Wolf Convergence Station , this would be an excellent time to visit. You’ll want to plan for several hours at this multi-dimensional, multi-sensory place of discovery and imagination.

Rocky Mountain National Park

You may think of summer as the best time to visit Colorado’s National Parks . But this iconic park is one of the best places to visit in Colorado in March, as the snow-capped peaks and stunning scenery are at their finest during this time. Whether you are looking to hike, snowshoe, or simply take in the views, Rocky Mountain National Park is a must-visit destination in March.

If you are looking for a secluded getaway, be sure to check out Grand Lake Lodge . They more recently started offering their historic cabin rentals in winter.

Garden of the Gods

This stunning park in Colorado Springs is a must-visit for anyone interested in geology, nature, and outdoor recreation. With its towering red rock formations capped in snow and miles of hiking trails, Garden of the Gods is a unique and beautiful destination to explore in March.

If the weather is inclement, then check out Great Wolf Lodge for the kids. This huge indoor waterpark is also complimented with an indoor adventure park with everything from mini golf and an arcade to a ropes course. There’s no shortage of fun things to do with the kids in Colorado Springs .

This charming mountain town is the perfect place to visit in March for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of city life. With its picturesque Victorian architecture, scenic railway, and nearby mountain trails, Durango offers a taste of the Old West and a chance to connect with nature.

It is also near two of Colorado’s more unique ski resorts: Purgatory and Silverton. We love combining history with fun on the slopes during a Colorado getaway.

Just beware of the drive if you go over Red Mountain Pass . It is beautiful, but scary. And, a snowstorm can shut it down for hours or days.

Colorado is a state that offers a diverse range of experiences and activities for visitors at different times of the year. Colorado in March, and April too, is when you really can experience different seasons depending on timing and where you go.

Colorado is perhaps best known for the Rocky Mountains that stretch across the state and offer up hiking and biking in the summer and skiing and snowboarding in the winter. But what most people don’t know about Colorado is that the state also has beautiful red rock formations set in the dry desert, ancient cliff dwellings, and alternative towns that dance to the beat of their own drums.

The one thing that binds everyone who lives in or visits Colorado is a love of nature and the outdoors — be it river rafting, climbing 14,000-foot peaks, or wildflower viewing. And as someone who grew up in the state (and lives here now), I’ve spent several decades exploring the vista-rich Centennial State. Rattlesnake Canyon Arches

Utah’s Arches National Park has the world’s highest concentration of natural arches, but right across the border in Colorado is the world’s second-highest concentration. And in Colorado, you don’t have to pay a national park entry fee (or battle the crowds) to see them. Rattlesnake Canyon Arches boasts 35 natural arches tucked in a canyon on a 123,400-acre preserve.

Colorado may be known for its natural beauty, but the draw of downtown Denver is impossible to overlook. Larimer Square was the city's first designated local historic district for good reason — the city block is perfectly picturesque with shops and eateries that round out the Colorado experience. The square is a short 10-minute walk from the heart of the city: Union Station.

It doesn’t get more Colorado than watching a golden eagle soar above a steep gorge. The sighting is part of the experience at Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park in western Colorado. The national park is marked by a deep, river-carved gorge with sheer walls. For the coolest view, check out the Painted Wall cliff that looks as if it was painted with giant stripes.

When you think of the American West, chances are you imagine something like the Colorado National Monument , which sits high on the Colorado Plateau and includes natural wonders like sheer canyon walls, towering monoliths, herds of bighorn sheep, and soaring eagles. In this grand landscape, there is plenty to keep you busy — including the beautiful Rim Rock Drive, year-round camping, and hiking and biking.

Aspen is by no means a hidden gem, but it’s popular for a reason. The beautiful mountain town has four ski areas (that you can access with one lift ticket) and a surprising amount of culture for a town of around 7,000 people. And it wouldn’t be a trip to Aspen without a stop by the Maroon Bells , the most photographed mountains in North America.

Mesa Verde National Park

This national park in southwestern Colorado is considered to be one of the state’s most sacred places. It was once inhabited by the Ancestral Pueblo people who built their homes in the sandstone cliffs. That heritage (and architectural wonder) is protected within this park, which is also a World Heritage Site and an International Dark Sky Park.

Amache National Historic Site

One of the most significant moments in Colorado’s history is not known by many. The Amache National Historic Site , also called the Granada Relocation Center or Camp Amache, is where thousands of Japanese Americans were unjustly incarcerated during World War II. Today, the eastern Colorado site shares the stories of the more than 10,000 people who passed through the camp — the majority of whom were U.S. citizens.

There are plenty of natural hot springs throughout the state (just check out the state’s hot spring loop ), but one of the best is found in Pagosa Springs, a small town that sits over the world’s deepest hot spring. I’d argue the best spot to soak is The Springs Resort & Spa , which has terraced tubs set along the river, but if you want to save a buck, you can also soak in the totally free “ hippy dip ” across the river.

Rocky Mountain National Park

Rocky Mountain National Park is Colorado’s most visited national park. It is just over an hour’s drive from downtown Denver and is unique in that it spans the Continental Divide. In the fall, the Old Fall River Road and Trail Ridge Road are particularly colorful drives, while mountaineers come to summit Longs Peak, the park’s tallest mountain.

Remember when I said that Colorado was home to “alternative towns that dance to the beat of their own drum”? I was talking about Crestone, a tiny town of just under 150 people that is committed to sustainable living and spirituality. Throughout the town, you’ll find a variety of off-the-grid homes and spiritual centers and sites like the Crestone Mountain Zen Center and the Tashi Gomang Stupa .

Red Rocks Park and Amphitheatre

Just west of Denver, you’ll spot giant red rocks that seem to shoot out from the earth. This rock structure was long ago harnessed to create a natural amphitheater that has become world renowned for its unique sound quality. In fact, playing at Red Rocks has become a goal performance for many big-name artists.

When it comes to mountain towns with all-around appeal, it’s hard to top Glenwood Springs. The “larger” mountain town (just over 10,000 people), is set on the interstate making it easy to access from Denver (2.5 hours away). The town has three developed hot springs, a mountaintop adventure park that can only be accessed by gondola, and a river that provides opportunities for paddlers and fishers.

Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve

The Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve is one of those places that you might not expect to find in Colorado. The park protects a natural phenomenon: giant mounds of sand that were collected at the base of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. The park is home to the tallest sand dunes in North America and the mysterious “surge flow” of Medano Creek . 

Crested Butte

Like every other Colorado mountain town , Crested Butte has wonderful hiking and biking trails and great skiing, but what sets it apart is the abundance of wildflowers that earned it the nickname “Wildflower Capital of Colorado.” There’s even an annual 10-day festival celebrating the blooms.

Canyons of the Ancients National Monument

In the dry, red rock canyons of southwestern Colorado is this archaeological wonder. The Canyons of the Ancients National Monument encompasses a whopping 174,000 acres that contain clues to the daily lives of ancient Indigenous people, including more than 8,300 recorded villages, cliff dwellings, shrines, kivas, petroglyphs, and other historic sites. 

Steamboat Springs

Steamboat Springs is yet another Colorado hot spring and ski town, but unlike the others on this list, Steamboat has a unique American West feel. Here, cowboy hats are just as common as Chacos, and the landscape lends itself to people who like to get outside. There are two ski areas, geothermal hot springs, and a state park directly to the north. 

Denver Union Station

Many cities have a train station, but Denver has turned their transportation hub into the heart of the city. The 1914 Beaux-Arts train station , which is also a historic landmark, consists of 10 chef-owned restaurants and bars, a boutique hotel, and a handful of unique shops (and there are four bee hives on the roof). Once you’ve shopped and eaten your fair share, you can hop on the bus, light rail, or Amtrak to your next destination.

The city of Durango is perched where the mountains meet the desert, providing a landscape that has a little of everything. There are hot springs, ski areas, mountain biking trails, and plenty of fun to be had on the Animas River that runs through town. In the summer, a top to-do is riding the 19th-century Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad from Durango to Silverton, Colorado over a mountain pass.

At this national monument , which straddles the Colorado-Utah border and passes into both states, there’s endless proof that dinosaurs once roamed the Colorado landscape. The monument includes dinosaur remains that are embedded in the rocks, petroglyphs from early humans, and plenty of outdoorsy things to do including river rafting, hiking, and camping.

Colorado is home to four stunning national parks to visit–and despite the Centennial State’s reputation for its incredible Rocky Mountain landscapes, each park is incredibly unique and well worth a visit!

Rocky Mountain National Park

Welcoming more than 3 million visitors each year, Rocky Mountain National Park is not only the state’s most popular national park, it’s easily one of the top places to visit in Colorado as a whole!

From snowcapped mountains to alpine lakes, and from challenging hikes to relaxing scenic drives, Rocky Mountain National Park has options for all kinds of travelers–the only thing you truly need to justify a visit is an appreciation for alpine beauty.

Some of the most popular things to do in RMNP include visiting Bear Lake, hiking to Emerald Lake and Dream Lake, driving the beautiful Trail Ridge Road, and checking out Old Fall River Road (either by car or by foot depending on the season).

If you’re visiting in winter, don’t worry, much of the park is still accessible–just be prepared to lace up your cross country skis to visit some of the most popular lakes!

Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park

Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park  is an often-overlooked national park in Gunnison, Colorado–but if you add it to your list of beautiful places in Colorado to visit, there’s no doubt that you’ll be blown away.

It is one of the deepest canyons in North America at 8,043 feet deep.  It’s hard to imagine that, even when you’re there looking at it.  It’s easiest to visit the South Rim just outside of Gunnison which is also where you can access the river at the bottom of the canyon.

There is also access to the North Rim which is perfect if you want to get away from the already meager crowds. 

Keep in mind that though the two rims look close to each other on a map, they’re a couple hours worth of driving apart.

While the park isn’t bursting with hiking trails, there are quite a few to choose from and just as many amazing viewpoints to stop at. 

Keep your eyes peeled for bears while you’re exploring the park.  

Even if you just have a couple of hours, it’s totally worth visiting.  Most of the trails are short, under three miles round-trip. 

The Oak Flat Loop Trail is great for people looking to hike below the rim but not all the way to the river.  It’s two miles round-trip and can be narrow in some places, so be careful. 

Also make sure to drive down to the river, even if just for the experience.

Mesa Verde National Park

Mesa Verde National Park  is home to 600 cliff dwellings. 

The Ancient Puebloans built their villages in overhangs in the side of steep cliffs and climbed down from above, using hand and footholds carved directly into the cliff. 

Today, you can see many of them from overlooks at the top of the mesa and see some of them up close on guided tours.  Bear in mind that you need to climb down ladders or steep steps to visit them.

The cliff dwellings are truly incredible to see.  Highlights include Cliff Palace (the largest), Long House, and Balcony House (where you need to crawl through a very narrow tunnel to exit).

Each year, some of the other dwellings are also opened up to small group visits, with a ranger as a guide.  You need to hike to these, and often climb down the original hand and footholds (with the help of modern-day chains to make it safer). 

Whether you see the cliff dwellings from overlooks, on a guided tour, or a small group back-country hike, you are sure to be fascinated by them.

Great Sand Dunes National Park

Great Sand Dunes National Park, found in the Saguache and Alamosa Counties of southern Colorado, encompasses more than 100,000 acres of open-air adventure.

The fascination not only lies with the tallest sand dunes in North America, but also the surrounding landscape that features forests, snow-capped mountains, and rivers.

There is so much to do that 3 days is the minimum number of days to spend in and around the surrounding area. Top sights in the preserve include High Dune, Zapata Falls, Medano Pass.

Sandboarding is a popular activity and should not be missed. Other activities worth trying include sledding, horseback riding, and hiking to catch a beautiful sunrise .

The park is always open and no reservations are required. However, the best time to visit is during spring and fall.

The closest town is Mosca, but the park is easily reached from any major city as the San Luis Valley Airport is a mere 45-minute drive from the park’s entrance.

Known as the gateway to Rocky Mountain National Park, the charming small town of Estes Park easily ranks among the best places to visit in Colorado.

With its beautiful downtown (don’t miss a chance to stroll along the riverwalk!), its huge prevalance of elk living in and around the town, its beautiful lake, and the world-class nature of nearby hiking opportunities, Estes Park belongs on any Colorado bucket list.

While in Estes Park, be sure to stop by the historic Park Theatre, consider a whitewater rafting trip, go for a scenic drive, check out one of the town’s breweries, and pay a visit to the beautiful Stanley Hotel, which inspired Stephen King’s The Shining.

Even if you don’t check in, the hotel is still worth a peak!

And, of course, the main attraction lies just outside of town: no trip to Estes Park is complete without plenty of time spent in Rocky Mountain National Park!

Where to Stay in Estes Park

• Mountain Shadows Resort: Get into the rustic feel with these incredible cottages in Estes Park. Cottages have private terraces, hot tubs and wooden 4-poster beds.
• Hotel Estes : These fabulous pet friendly cabins are close to Rocky Mountain National Park with mountain views, great facilities such as an outdoor swimming pool for those warmer months.

Crested Butte

Crested Butte in the Rocky Mountains is probably one of the most recommended places to visit in Colorado.

It is famous as a ski resort and is also considered to be the capital of wildflowers, making Crested Butte a fantastic year-round travel destination in Colorado.

In winter, the challenging ski slopes attract the best skiers and snowboarders. The cross-country ski trails, which are located around the city, add a special beauty to the unique landscape.

In the warm months, mountain bikers and hikers come to experience the unique nature of the region and the splendor of the flowers.

But not only is the surrounding nature gorgeous, but the town is also pretty too!

Crested Butte is an extremely pedestrian-friendly town, and walking around, you will discover picturesque historical buildings, great restaurants, and plenty of mountain views.

We also recommend a visit in July, when the famous Crested Butte Wildflower Festival takes place.

Where to Stay in Crested Butte

• Nordic Inn: This comfortable hotel is a great place to rest after exploring. There is a Great Room with complimentary games and views over Mt. Crested Butte, there is also a large hot tub to enjoy. Rooms are spacious and really cosy.
• Public House Lofts: As the name suggests these rooms are over a really great bar called Public House, perfectly located for getting home quickly at the end of the evening! The rooms are modern, comfortable and really well designed. Definitely a great spot to stay in Crested Butte.

Colorado’s capital city is arguably one of the trendiest and fastest-growing cities in the country–and given that Denver offers a fantastic array of things to do while also being located within proximity of epic mountain hikes, it’s no surprise.

Known for its breweries, parks, and proximity to Rocky Mountain National Park as well as popular mountain towns like Boulder and Estes Park, Denver makes a fantastic weekend getaway destination .

While you’re in Denver, consider catching a game at Coor’s Field, seeing a show at the iconic Red Rocks Amphitheatre, strolling down the 16th Street Mall, stopping by Larimer Square, and–of course–hitting up a few of those popular breweries.

If you’re looking to add some museum-hopping to your Denver itinerary , the city also has you covered, from classics like the Denver Art Museum to more unique options like the Wings Over the Rockies Air & Space Museum.

Steamboat Springs

Steamboat Springs might be a popular ski town in Colorado and home to many former Olympians, but a visit here can feel less like your typical Colorado ski resort vacation and more like an adventure.

This is a town with a vibrant local community, humorous traditions, and lively Western history.

A four-season destination, there’s plenty of things to do year-round in Steamboat. But for many, winter is the most magical time.

Winter sports are everywhere, not just the main ski resort.

The locals even have their own hill in the center of town and during the Winter Carnival each February, the town comes alive with ski contests (complete with light-up costumes and fireworks), outdoor concerts, sculptures, and parades where horses pull thrill-seekers on skis over jumps right through the middle of town!

After all of that winter fun, take a soothing dip in one of the  hot springs around town , such as Strawberry Hot Springs, a local favorite for its natural scenery tucked back in a canyon. 

Where to Stay in Steamboat Springs

• For a premium place to stay, book into the Sheraton Steamboat Resort Villas . This is a classic excellent quality large hotels with all the facilities you would expect. Guaranteed great stay
• Chalet Val d’Isere is also a fabulous option but with more of a homely vibe. There are just a few rooms and it is a classic ski lodge style cabin complete with plenty of cozy features.

Breckenridge

Consistently ranked among the best places to visit in Colorado, Breckenridge is a charming town in the heart of the Rockies with non-stop activities and scenic beauty.

Visit the craft breweries and fabulous restaurants in this town surrounded by mountain peaks. Breckenridge chefs feature local farm-to-table ingredients. In Breckenridge’s historic district you can learn the story of this old mining town.

Breckenridge is famous for its world-class cross country and alpine skiing, making it one of the most classic Colorado vacation spots. The Breckenridge ski resort boasts 5 mountains and 187 trails.

In the summer you will find wildflowers as you hike into an alpine meadow or a cascading waterfall. In fall, the blazing colors of the aspens are spectacular.

Manitou Springs is a historic city located just outside of Colorado Springs with roots tracing back to the Pikes Peak gold rush.

Telluride is a small but mighty town with colorful mining history and unparalleled landscapes that draw visitors from all over the country. 

Tucked away in the box canyon in San Juan Mountains in southwest Colorado, Telluride is definitely an exclusive destination as it’s not easy to get to. It takes about 5-6 hours from Denver to get here, and the local airport doesn’t have big commercial flights.

Pagosa Springs

The town is famous for its magnificent thermal springs, thanks to which it owes its name. In Ute, “pagosah” means “healing waters.” Pagosa is the home of the world’s deepest geothermal hot spring.

Spend a weekend or even a long weekend exploring Colorado Springs . It’s the perfect amount of time to experience the highlights of this small town in Colorado.

Colorado Springs is well known for its Manitou Springs Incline which gains nearly 2,000 feet of elevation over less than 1 mile. Whether you’re looking for a tough workout to start training for Colorado 14ers (14,000-foot mountains), or just want to challenge yourself, this incline trail is a must.

Colorado Springs is also known for the beautiful Garden of the Gods park.

Mount Evans

If standing on the summit of a 14er is on your Colorado bucket list, don’t miss a trip to Mount Evans.

You can reach the 14,265-foot summit of this mountain in multiple ways, so you get to decide how hard you want to work to get to the top.

Mount Evans is located about 60 miles west of Denver, along Mount Evans Scenic Byway (aka Highway 5), which is the highest paved road in the whole country.

You can actually drive it straight to the top with only a short stroll to the true summit from the parking lot.

For the extra bragging rights and experience of hiking a 14er , pull off earlier on the road and park at Summit Lake trailhead.

From there, hike approximately 4.5 miles round trip (with 2300 feet of elevation gain) to get to the summit of Mount Evans.

If you prefer pedal power, you can bike to the summit as well.

Be aware that the road to the trailhead and summit is closed in winter, so plan to visit Mount Evans in spring, summer, or fall.

There is a flaw in this article, Grand Lake is a very nice small mountain town. And yes there is a lake called Grand Lake, but the big lake is called Lake Granby.

Not a flaw. Lake Granby is man-made. The article states that Grand Lake is the largest natural lake in CO, which is in fact, true.

I can’t believe Ouray wasn’t on the list.

Tourist from back east has visited Ouray several times. Great area to visit, hike and view mountains. Definitely an oversite! Friendly. Great camping nearby Norman and Linda

One of the most rewarding states to visit, ‘Colorful Colorado’ is packed with incredible scenery, sights, and cities. Defined by the Rocky Mountains that run down its middle, the state has many different sides to it and diverse attractions.

The lively state capital of Denver has a wealth of things to do, while other Colorado cities are more known for their outdoor activities and proximity to pristine nature sights. Skiing at mountain resort towns, such as Aspen and Steamboat Springs, is popular. Then there’s the thriving cultural scenes and nightlife of college towns, like Boulder and Fort Collins.

With beautiful mountains and forests only ever a short drive away, the best cities in Colorado offer the perfect mix of culture, nature, and history.

12. Steamboat Springs

Nestled in the northwest of the state, Steamboat Springs boasts some of the best champagne powder skiing in the world. Nicknamed ‘Ski Town USA’, it has a well-preserved historic district to explore and also offers some excellent outdoor activities in the summer months.

Set in a scenic spot alongside the Yampa River, the town was founded in 1876 and is named for the numerous hot springs that dot the area. Once a railway hub, its Old Town is now home to countless shops, restaurants, and bars, as well as its historic sights.

The main reason that everyone visits, however, is for its stupendous skiing and super soft snow. In summer, visitors can enjoy everything from horseback riding and golfing to hiking, mountain biking, and kayaking amidst spectacular surroundings.

Situated just forty-five minutes’ drive southwest of Colorado Springs, Cañon City straddles the Arkansas River and lies at the foot of the majestic Rocky Mountains. As such, it offers all kinds of epic outdoor activities, with river rafting and rock climbing particularly popular pastimes.

The city’s standout sight is undoubtedly the ginormous Royal Gorge that lies nearby and is home to the country’s highest suspension bridge, an aerial cable car and much, much more. Besides rafting along its river or climbing up its steep cliffs, there are also scenic drives and train rides to enjoy through the winding canyon.

While most people visit for its ample adventure activities, Cañon City’s Historic Downtown also has some great museums to check out that offer a fascinating look into the area’s past.

For centuries, people have flocked to Glenwood Springs for the natural hot springs that flow amidst the stunning scenery of the Rocky Mountains. While its relaxing waters are still the town’s main draw, it also has some wonderful hiking, mountain biking, and watersports for visitors to enjoy.

Set at the spot where the Colorado and Roaring Fork rivers meet, the town sprung up around the hot springs in the late 1800s. Besides swimming, you can hike to see waterfalls and lakes in the mountains or go fly-fishing, kayaking, and whitewater rafting along the river.

Due to its numerous hotels and shops, Glenwood Springs also makes for a great base from which to visit both Vail and Aspen’s ski resorts, which lie just under an hour away.

9. Grand Junction

As it is the largest city in the state’s Western Slope region, Grand Junction is often used as a base from which to explore the nearby landscape. While the Colorado National Monument and Grand Mesa are undoubtedly its main attractions, it also has a thriving arts and culture scene to delve into.

So named due to its setting at the confluence of the Colorado and Gunnison Rivers, Grand Junction has long been an important commercial and transportation hub. As such, its downtown is packed with shops and restaurants. It also has some fantastic public artworks and interesting museums to visit.

From here, there are a number of scenic drives to enjoy around the surrounding canyons, mesas, and desert. Besides hiking, horseback riding, and mountain biking, you can also try out some of its great wineries.

8. Loveland

Located in the Front Range region, the delightfully named Loveland is the perfect place to visit if you appreciate both art and the great outdoors. Besides boasting one of the largest sculpture gardens in the US, the city has countless public artworks to check out and lies next to some lovely nature.

Nicknamed ‘Sweetheart City’, it is nationally known for its annual Valentine re-mailing program where post is returned to the sender, hand-stamped with a cachet and verse to celebrate the romantic day. In addition to the numerous events held for Valentine’s Day, Loveland’s other main draws are its splendid Sculpture in the Park show and excellent art museum.

On top of this, it is perfectly placed for exploring Estes Park and Rocky Mountain National Park, while Fort Collins and Boulder both lie just a short drive away.

Offering up a magnificent mix of culture, cuisine, and history, Pueblo can be found at the confluence of the Arkansas River and Fountain Creek. Aside from all its attractions, the city is most known for hosting the colorful and chaotic Colorado State Fair in late August of each year.

Established as a trading post by some of Colorado’s earliest pioneers, the city later flourished as a railway hub and steel manufacturing center. Nowadays, its historic heart is packed with beautiful old buildings and has galleries, museums, and a wonderful waterfront plaza to stop by.

Aside from delving into its rich history and heritage, and sampling its delicious Mexican cuisine, the best thing to do in Pueblo is attend the Colorado State Fair. Over the course of two weeks, carnivals, concerts, and rodeos are held, and a festive atmosphere takes over Steel City.

6. Fort Collins

Fort Collins is the most populous city in the north of Colorado and has myriad amazing things to see and do . Set amidst the foothills of the Rockies, it has a vibrant historic district to explore and a lively youthful feel thanks to its large student population.

Dotted with delightful historic buildings, Fort Collins’ charming Old Town was originally founded as a military outpost in 1864. Now home to countless bars and breweries, as well as shops and eateries, it is a very fun area to explore and offers some great live music and nightlife.

While much of the city’s cultural life revolves around the students and campus of the Colorado State University, you can also enjoy some awesome outdoor adventure activities in the nearby mountains.

One of the most famous ski resorts in the world, the marvelous mountain town of Aspen has a whole host of wonderful winter sports for visitors. Set in the center of the state in a remote part of the Rockies, it really is a treat to visit due to its scenic setting, chic ambience, and epic outdoor activities.

Once a mining town, it was transformed into a top tourist destination in the mid-twentieth century and has attracted the rich and famous ever since. As such, its downtown is home to all kinds of upscale boutiques and gourmet restaurants with trendy bars and luxury hotels also dotted about.

In total, the town has four fantastic ski slopes for you to shoot down that all boast champagne powder snow. While most people visit in winter, its many mountains also offer up some great hiking and biking in the summer months.

While Durango is most known for its historic narrow gauge railroad, the small city has much more going for it and lies amidst some spellbinding scenery in the southwest of the state. Aside from all its outdoor activities, the town has a scattering of historic sites to check out and a lovely Old West look and feel.

Established back in 1880 by a railway company, its main draw is undoubtedly still the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. Widely considered to be one of the most scenic train journeys in the States, it winds its way through the surrounding mountains and forests, which also offer brilliant hiking, mountain biking, and skiing.

In addition to exploring Durango’s atmospheric downtown, the city is also conveniently located for visiting incredible archaeological sites at Mesa Verde, Chimney Rock and Spring Creek.

Set amidst the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, the lively yet laid back college town of Boulder has something for everyone to enjoy. Besides its thriving dining and cultural scenes, the city has an astounding array of outdoor activities with its residents renowned for their healthy lifestyles.

As Boulder is home to the main campus of the University of Colorado, there are numerous art galleries and museums, with lectures, cultural events, and music shows regularly taking place. One of the fastest growing cities in the States, Colorado’s capital Denver is a great place to live, visit and explore. Blessed with year-round warm weather and blue skies, the cosmopolitan city acts as an important economic and cultural hub for the Front Range region.

Known as the ‘Mile-High City’, its diverse neighborhoods are a treat to explore being home to art galleries and museums, and boasting splendid shopping, dining, and nightlife. In addition, you can also watch amazing shows at the enormous Denver Performing Arts Complex or catch a game of one of the city’s four pro sports teams.

Just a side note, but “Champagne Powder” is actually trademarked and only used and found in Steamboat. It has to do with the unusually dry snow we get here in the northern part of the state. Unless you’ve skied it and every other resort in Colorado for 50 years you really have no idea what it’s like. Please don’t call Aspen’s snow Champagne. Aspen has fantastic resorts and skiing but only Champagne you can drink.

With the close of winter upon us and as we head into spring, March in Colorado can be an unpredictable month with extreme weather patterns. Spring snowstorms are met with warm, summer-like days, leaving most things to do in March up in the air.

Ski resorts anticipate their potential closing dates, spring events get everyone excited for warmer weather on the horizon, and the days start to get longer as we say goodbye to winter in the Rockies. To help celebrate the coming of spring in Colorado, discover these fun mile-high activities this March, listed below.

Celebrate Saint Patrick’s Day in Colorado

While most of Colorado will host their versions of Saint Patrick’s Day celebrations, two big events are well-known throughout the state. Centered are elaborate parades in downtown Colorado Springs and Denver, these are exciting events to attend. This year they’re on the same Saturday so pick your location and get there early.

Denver St. Patrick’s Day Parade

Perhaps the biggest St. Patty’s Day event in Colorado, the Denver St. Patrick’s Day parade is a long-time tradition in the Mile High City that both locals and tourists enjoy every year. In its 60th year, the parade will be bigger and better than ever before with hundreds of colorful floats, dancers, performers, and music, all honoring our police, fire, and first responders. The parade begins at 9:30 am at Wynkoop and 19th.

Colorado Springs St. Patrick’s Day Parade

In its 38th year, the Colorado Springs St. Patrick’s Day Parade rivals its neighbor in Denver with its biggest community event of the year. Beyond the parade, there are running and cycling events, plus the Sports & Wellness Expo at the Mining Exchange.

Enjoy a unique March festival

March in Colorado is filled with plenty of events to keep you busy and thinking about the spring season. From coffin races in the mountains to popular annual bird migration, there is a unique and fun event to fill your calendar every weekend this month.

Monte Vista Crane Festival

Every year in early spring, the migration of the sandhill cranes makes its way through the Monte Vista Wildlife Refuge in southern Colorado. Thousands of cranes choose this refuge as their home from mid-February through mid-April during which visitors can view the activity of these beautiful birds up close.

In celebration of this natural wonder, the town of Monte Vista hosts the Crane Festival , which features wildlife tours, guest speakers, a craft fair, and photography workshops. 2024 is the 51st anniversary of the festival, bringing extra excitement to the event.

Frozen Dead Guy Days

Maybe one of the more unique events in Colorado, Frozen Dead Guy Days is a springtime tradition dating back over 20 years. This native festival pays tribute to Bredo Morstal, who is currently frozen and housed in a Tuff Shed on dry ice above the town of Nederland. The three-day festival features live bands paired with local craft brews, food, and a few thousand of your closest friends.

But the highlight of the festival is the unique events held throughout the weekend, including coffin racing, icy turkey bowling, human foosball, costumed polar plunging, a frozen t-shirt contest, plus a showing of the documentary Grandpa Bredo . If there is one event to add to your Colorado bucket list, this is it. FDGD is one of the strangest festivals around .

Denver hosts their 20th annual Restaurant Week this month, featuring hundreds of participating eateries that offer set-price menus. Colorado’s weather and climate are as diverse as its breathtaking scenery. While there is truly no wrong time to explore this colorful, adventure-filled state. The best time to visit Colorado depends entirely on what you want to see and do on your trip, plus the type of scenery and weather you envision. 

As Colorado experiences all four seasons, it’s loosely defined by hot, dry summers, pleasant and colorful autumns, mild, but snowy winters, and unpredictable springs that are just as likely to be snowy and wet as they are to be abnormally hot and arid. 

However, Colorado’s geographical diversity and altitude variations mean the climate and weather vary considerably throughout the state. What you’ll find in the cities weather-wise isn’t what you’ll encounter in the high country and in some cases, weather can be wildly different just a few miles away!

In this guide, we’re going to clarify exactly what to expect from this exciting state rich in outdoor activities and breathtaking scenery in all four seasons, to help you decide on the best time to visit Colorado for you . 

When is the best time to visit Colorado?

The best time to visit Colorado is during late spring/early summer (May into early June) and fall (September/October) for hiking and outdoor adventures. This is when the weather is not too hot and at it’s best to experience the outdoors. Plus, you’ll have fewer crowds to contend with.

Likewise, if you want to experience skiing in Colorado , you’ll have the best conditions during January and February. Avoid holiday weekends like MLK and Presidents Day if you want to take advantage of cheaper rates and less crowds. 

So again, the best time to visit Colorado largely depends on what you want to see and do.

We’ve experienced Colorado in all seasons

Our experience:

• We’ve traveled to Colorado on a number of occasions, most recently in the summer of 2021. 
• Our Director of Content, Amanda, actually lived in Colorado for 7 years, and still regularly returns to visit friends and family. 

As we mentioned, Colorado is a year round destination and you can’t really go wrong with visiting during any season. However, there are, of course, some things to consider. We visited Colorado in July and experienced pretty bad wildfires. The air was full of smoke and certain areas were off-limits. There were also tons of crowds in Rocky Mountain National Park , which made it really hard to get a timed entry permit.

Split into three main regions, the spine of the Rocky Mountains divides the center of the state. Rugged plateaus and mesas rule the western half, known as the Colorado Plateau, while the east is distinguished by its plains. 

In northern Colorado, the base of the iconic Front Range is considered the Piedmont. The Continental Divide also runs right through the state. 

It’s this geographical diversity that gives Colorado an array of breathtaking terrain—rugged mountains, desert canyons and cliffs, dense forests, pristine national parks, and even relatively flat, open prairies and plains (did you know Colorado has its own wine region?!). 

Nicknamed the “Highest State,” Colorado has an average elevation of 6,800 feet, with lows of around 4,000 feet and highs exceeding a staggering 14,000 feet above sea level. Naturally, these extremes in altitude have a huge impact on the weather! 

As a result of Colorado’s mid-latitude setting halfway between the equator and the North Pole, it receives an abundance of sunshine. Many areas within the state enjoy over 300 days of sunshine every year.

Colorado is also notably far from the ocean and any other large bodies of water, which creates an unusually dry climate. 

While the US average is 38 inches of rain per year, Colorado receives just 17 inches on average. Rain is generally more common in Colorado during the summer months, but this varies by location. 

The state’s inland location produces a cool yet dry atmosphere overall, although conditions once again vary based on the altitude and season. For example, Aspen sees average highs of 35.6°F in January and gets several feet of snow, whereas Denver regularly hits 48°F and may get just a few inches. 

With that said, Colorado weather is also notoriously unpredictable and you may very well experience all four seasons in one day—especially in transitional months like September, October, March, and April. 

Whatever time of year you end up visiting Colorado, remember that the sun shines year-round!

• Warmest months in Colorado: July/August
• Coldest months in Colorado: December/January
• Rainiest month in Colorado: May in the Denver-Boulder area; August most everywhere else
• Driest month in Colorado: February
• Most crowded months in Colorado: July/August
• Least crowded months in Colorado: April/May; October/November

Summer in Colorado is in full swing between June and August. Hiking trails are all open and accessible, but you’ll need to start early and brace yourself for crowds in popular areas. This is also the best time to visit Colorado for water-based adventures, such as kayaking, rafting, and tubing. 

In theory, most areas (aside from the high country) should be clear of snow by early June, but it does sometimes stick around into July. 

Temperatures in Denver can hit 90°F in August, while in Aspen they usually top out around 79°F. Keep in mind that Colorado’s high altitude means the UV index is extremely high, making it feel even hotter than it really is. 

Aside from enjoying The Great Outdoors, summer is also festival season in Colorado, particularly in the mountain towns.

• Red Rocks: outdoor concerts in an extremely unique natural amphitheater, plus hiking on non-event days
• Telluride: for the many long-running summer festivals and epic camping, hiking, and biking
• Buena Vista: whitewater rafting and a great base for visiting Great Sand Dunes National Park
• Palisade: sample and tour over 20 wineries and U-pick orchards!
• Summit County: home to Breckenridge, Frisco, Dillon, Keystone, Copper Mountain, and Silverthorne, Summit County is affectionately known as “Colorado’s summer playground”
• Denver , Boulder, Colorado Springs, and other large cities for festivals 

Best things to do during summer in Colorado

• Go hiking (start early to beat the heat — and crowds!)
• Greeley Stampede , an annual event celebrating Western heritage  
• River rafting or tubing 
• Attend Film on the Rocks or Yoga on the Rocks at Red Rocks (June – August)
• Outdoor rock climbing (indoor bouldering is also a year-round option in the cities)
• Telluride Bluegrass Festival (June)
• Palisade Peach Festival in August 

Fall is easily the best time to visit Colorado for national parks and hiking—although you’ll still need to slather on the sunscreen. 

Temperatures start to ease up in September and early October, but warm, sunny days are still the norm. Denver often sees temps in the 80s throughout September.

Crowds also disperse in the fall as peak tourism season ends, but there is a bit of a spike in the mountains in mid- to late-October for prime leaf peeping. 

Speaking of fall leaves, it’s hard to top Colorado in autumn. There’s nothing quite like walking or driving through golden aspens and other colorful foliage!

Best places to visit during fall in Colorado

• Aspen: This town’s namesake trees are in full color during the fall; this is also one of the best times to see the iconic Maroon Bells surrounded by colorful foliage  
• Colorado Springs: Garden of the Gods, Pikes Peak, Manitou, and the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo are all at their best in fall
• Rocky Mountain National Park for epic leaf peeping and wildlife watching
• Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park: even more spectacular with fall colors (and one of the least visited parks!)
• Durango , to ride the iconic Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad through breathtaking fall scenery
• Hot spring destinations such as Pagosa Springs, Strawberry Springs, Iron Springs, or Princeton 

Best things to do during fall in Colorado

• Attend Colorado Mountain Winefest in Palisade or one of the many other wine festivals across the state in September
• Hike and/or camp in the Rockies 
• Take a fall foliage drive along Maroon Bells, Kebler Pass, Trail Ridge Road, or the La Veta Pass
• Soak in natural hot springs
• Telluride Film Festival (Labor Day Weekend)
• Attend Oktoberfest in Nederland 

Winter brings snow — a lot of it — to much of the state, and especially the mountains, making it the best time to visit Colorado for skiing and other winter sports. Even if you don’t ski or snowboard, the mountains offer an array of winter activities suitable for all types of travelers, including families traveling with kids. 

Hiking is mostly off the table in the high country in winter, as roads are often more hazardous with ice and frequent closures, but you’ll find plenty of safer opportunities at lower elevations. You can also try winter hiking alternatives, such as snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. 

Colorado’s cities are an attractive winter option if you’re into craft beer and great happy hours (who isn’t?!), seeking a culture binge, or want to check out the December holiday markets.  

Best places to visit during winter in Colorado

• Colorado Springs , specifically to experience the Broadmoor’s legendary holiday display and visit The North Pole
• Telluride: highly regarded as some of the best skiing in the world, and rarely crowded, thanks to its remote location
• Steamboat Springs for its Old West vibe, great skiing, and natural hot springs
• Crested Butte: a magical winter wonderland, with skiing, hot springs, and ice skating
• Summit County: a family-friendly mixture of skiing, shopping, ice skating, tubing, sledding, and more
• Aspen , an iconic winter destination with world-class skiing and easy access to Glenwood Springs 
• San Juan Mountains for epic, rugged ice climbing (and far fewer crowds in the winter!)

Best things to do during winter in Colorado

• Skiing or snowboarding at any of Colorado’s 30-plus ski resorts 
• Attend the Ouray Ice Festival in January
• Go snowshoeing or fat biking in Rocky Mountain National Park
• Ice fishing in Lake Dillon
• Dog sledding in Breckenridge
• Soak in natural hot springs (essential after any of the above activities!) in Glenwood or Steamboat 

Spring sees the (very) gradual melting of snow and much-anticipated arrival of colorful wildflowers. As temperatures rise and the days get longer, it’s a beautiful time to get out and about in nature or sip a craft beer in the late afternoon sun. 

The shoulder season months of spring are the best time to visit Colorado for avoiding crowds, enjoying the ski slopes (in early spring), and enjoying the bigger cities before accommodation and tour rates skyrocket again in the summer. 

It’s important to note that Colorado’s spring weather is particularly unpredictable. Temperatures may exceed 80°F in March or April, but you could also get a huge unexpected snowstorm in mid-May! 

Best places to visit during spring in Colorado

• Arapahoe Basin: Colorado’s longest ski season (often open into June!)
• Denver : for great craft beer, museums, sports, rooftop patios, and quick access to Front Range hikes
• Crested Butte: known as the “wildflower capital of Colorado”
• Cortez: to explore Mesa Verde National Park and the Four Corners Region 
• Fort Collins: a must for craft beer enthusiasts
• Breckenridge: for late-season skiing near Denver (open through the end of May)

Best things to do during spring in Colorado

• Go skiing at one of the many resorts open through April or May
• Explore the breweries, museums, and distinct neighborhoods of Denver  
• Art on the Streets – an annual outdoor event in Colorado Springs (May)
• Boulder Farmers Market
• Go on a wildflower hike in Crested Butte or Ouray
• Ride the Pikes Peak Cog or Royal Gorge Route train 

Best time to visit Colorado in our opinion…

In our opinion, the best time to visit Colorado ultimately comes down to how you want to spend your time. 

If hiking, biking, or rafting are high on your agenda, you’ll want to visit between late May and early October. Keep in mind that snow can hang around into early June, so allow for some flexibility so weather-related closures don’t thwart your plans.  

July and August are the busiest months in Colorado, so we’d recommend avoiding travel during those months if you prefer to avoid crowds – choose dates in the shoulder season of May or June, or wait until fall. 

Some resorts open their ski season as early as November and remain open as late as May; however, this is highly variable, subject to the snow forecast and weather conditions. We recommend booking ski trips after the holidays, in January and February , to be on the safe side. And avoid spring break months (March/April) to avoid the crowds and potentially warm/wet conditions. 

Overall, September and October are the most reliable, best months to visit Colorado . Summer temperatures and rainfall subside, fall colors pop, and as an added bonus, national parks and hotels are quieter.

Ultimately, Colorado has such diverse climate and conditions, that travelers would be lucky to experience all four seasons if they have the opportunity to do so.

This is a place to make unforgettable memories. Lake City, known for outdoor recreation along Lake San Cristobal in remote Hinsdale County, is nestled in the heart of the San Juan Mountain Range. It offers Haute Route yurts for a cozy overnight stay in the wilderness under a celestial sky.

Ouray, often called the "Switzerland of America," replicates a Swiss village, surrounded by 12,000 to 13,000-foot peaks and waterfalls in a high alpine valley. It also serves as an entrance to the stunning Cascade Falls Park. Cortez is home to Puebloan heritage and acts as a gateway to iconic natural and historical wonders like Mesa Verde National Park, which also offers some of the darkest, star-filled skies in the state.

Carbondale, another beautiful town, is set in a broad valley beneath the towering Mt. Sopris. Recognized by National Geographic Adventure Magazine for its adventure appeal, it offers a variety of activities for all types of travelers. Whether you seek outdoor excitement or relaxation, with an average of 295 days of sunshine and low humidity, this town feels like a happy place where every breath brings you clean mountain air. The northern terminus of the West Elk Loop Scenic and Historic Byway provides plenty of opportunities for hiking, biking, and scenic drives where the scenery leaves you breathless.

Cold but mild winters attract skiers and snowshoers to Carbondale's slopes and trails, while the warm summers are perfect for camping and activities like summiting Mt. Sopris. The charming downtown, through which the Crystal River flows, has great foodie spots like Village Smithy Restaurant and White House Pizza. Sopris Park, a popular spot for picnics, and Mushroom Rock, a scenic hiking spot, are other attractions. Additionally, Mountain Fair, an art and music festival, draws up to 20,000 visitors over three days during the last week of July. The Wild West Rodeo, a source of western family fun and entertainment, offers concessions every Thursday night throughout the summer.

The small, high-country desert town of Cortez offers an idyllic setting in the midst of its natural surroundings, inspiring adventures that attract true outdoorsmen. From McElmo Creek, a tributary of the San Juan River, to the nearby Ute Mountain, these landscapes are dotted with archaeological sites like Yucca House National Monument, where visitors can explore ancient Pueblo ruins near the mountain. Hawkins Preserve is a popular hiking area with local fauna and distant peaks often covered in snow. Don't miss the Notah-Dineh Company and Museum, a fascinating art gallery with various mediums, including quilts. Downtown, you can visit the Farm Bistro and Lounging Lizard for a bite, as well as the Cortez Cultural Center for local history and culture.

The enchantment continues at Mesa Verde National Park, minutes southeast of town, which was a sacred site for Ancestral Puebloans for over 700 years. This UNESCO World Heritage Site blends history with nature, offering visitors a glimpse into ancient Pueblo communities and cultural insights. Explore ancient dwellings like Far View House, Step House, and Cliff Palace, and follow scenic trails along the majestic mesas to see ancient markings. As an International Dark Sky Park, Mesa Verde offers incredible stargazing opportunities in some of the darkest skies in the country.

Crested Butte

Originally a quaint mining town in 1880, Crested Butte is now known as "Colorado's Last Great Ski Town." It's surrounded by the Elk Mountains, providing breathtaking views and a wide range of outdoor activities. As a registered national historic district, it retains a unique charm while also housing the Crested Butte Mountain Resort, catering to both skiers and snowboarders with its thousand-plus acres of terrain. The town is also a popular spot for Nordic skiing, snowmobiling, and snowshoeing, with summer activities following the wildflower blooms in spring.

Though somewhat remote, Crested Butte attracts visitors for its vibrant festivals, like the Crested Butte Wildflower Festival and the Crested Butte Music Festival. The town offers 750 miles of biking trails, alpine forests for hiking, and pristine rivers, lakes, and streams for fishing, kayaking, and whitewater rafting. Its unique geography provides a stunning backdrop for outdoor experiences. Downtown, there are several museums, coffee houses, and restaurants serving international cuisine. Check out the Sherpa Café for Nepalese food, visit Rainbow Park with its charming gazebo, and take the kids to the Trailhead Children's Museum for some family-friendly fun.

Located in the most remote part of Hinsdale County in the lower 48 states, Lake City is accessible via the Silver Thread Scenic Byway, which leads into the heart of the San Juan Mountain Range. This picturesque town provides year-round outdoor adventures and scenic relaxation against a stunning backdrop. Just off the byway, you'll find North Clear Creek Falls, one of Colorado's most photographed waterfalls, along with four other cascades in the area. Nearby, the spectacular San Cristobal Lake offers an ideal spot for a family vacation in the summer or a refreshing stop on a road trip. The town itself has a unique mountain culture with historic roots, including ties to the Ute Indians and the mining era, best explored along the Alpine Loop Backcountry Byway. Along with the snow-capped peaks and seasonal flowers, you can visit nearby ghost towns, old mining sites, and the neighboring towns of Ouray and Silverton.

In the winter, Lake City is home to the largest groomed network of snowmobile trails in Colorado. It also features a new ice-climbing park with 15 routes and some of the best cross-country skiing and snowshoeing trails. Haute Route yurts offer a cozy and unique lodging option for those looking for a wild stay. In the summer, the area's five 14,000-foot peaks (14ers) and twenty 13,000-foot peaks (13ers) attract avid hikers, while others enjoy fishing and boating at Lake San Cristobal. The town's National Historic District provides dining, lodging, and shopping options that make it easy to enjoy a vacation while soaking in the local culture and heritage.

Known as the "Switzerland of America," Ouray is a breathtaking town nestled among 12,000 to 13,000-foot peaks. This high alpine valley offers a variety of natural landscapes and wonders to explore, including cascading waterfalls right through town. Box Cañon Falls, where thousands of gallons of water spill each minute, and Cascade Falls, which can be seen from various points in town, are two notable highlights. The Cascade Falls Park is perfect for easy hikes with stunning views.

Ouray's mining history is evident in its architecture, museums, historic sites, and saloons. The trail to the Chief Ouray Mine offers an advanced hike to a former lead-zinc mine, with a bonus of the picturesque Upper Cascade Falls along the way. In winter, Ouray transforms into a charming Swiss-inspired village with snow-covered peaks and unique activities like ice climbing at the Ouray Ice Park, the largest public ice-climbing park in the world. This park overlooks the cozy town nestled under a blanket of snow.

Flanked by the Sangre de Cristo mountain range to the east and the San Juan range to the west, Saguache is a breathtaking high-country town that serves as the northern gateway to the San Luis Valley in south-central Colorado. Located at 7,800 feet above sea level, the rugged Sangre de Cristo Mountains create a fantastic backdrop for adventures like camping in the Saguache area. Tourists can pitch a tent under some of the darkest, star-studded skies in Colorado, enhancing the serene landscape that provides a truly scenic setting.

With wildlife roaming freely, visitors can enjoy a variety of trails for biking, horseback riding, and hiking, ranging from gentle greenways for easy strolls to rugged mountain hikes. Nearby fishing streams add to the outdoor activities available. Attracting photographers, romantics, and hammock enthusiasts, Saguache is also home to some of the state's most peaceful hot springs, perfect for daytime soaking or nighttime relaxation. It's an excellent way to unwind after a day trip to the nearby Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve. The nearby town of Crestone is known for the Karma Thegsum Tashi Gomang monastery, adding to the area's spiritual and cultural significance.

Vail is renowned worldwide as a winter playground for affluent skiers, but its appeal extends beyond the slopes to its luxurious bars and vibrant nightlife. While some might avoid Vail's more upscale atmosphere for smaller, quaint towns, the perception of large crowds is often exaggerated, and Vail's charm is understated. Despite its popularity, Vail offers a unique experience in the Rockies, comparable to Aspen, with stunning nature and unique geography taking center stage. The Vail ski resort, one of the largest in the nation, provides over 195 runs for world-class skiing, including secluded trails, family-friendly runs, and areas with fresh snow.

The town itself is a magnificent recreation of a Swiss or Austrian ski village, featuring beautiful European architecture and a distinct atmosphere that exudes a different culture. From dining to shopping, the nightlife is top-notch, even for a quick escape to unwind and enjoy yourself. Just two hours west of Denver along I-70, this Rocky Mountain town is a mecca for skiing and also offers spectacular summer landscapes with easy trails, longer treks like the hike to Gore Lake, and biking on the ski hills. There's rarely a queue for the scenic gondola ride, offering a bird's-eye view of the town, and you can savor hearty local cuisine at the Slope Room at Gravity Haus, a contemporary mountain lodge. The Root and Flower is a great spot to enjoy a drink with locals, while Cohabit in Avon provides an affordable place to stay for your visit.

In Colorado, the Centennial State, there is no shortage of breathtaking views. These charming towns offer access to epic outdoor adventures amidst unforgettable sights and experiences, featuring diverse wildlife and scenic byways. Vail's après-ski entertainment is as exciting as you've heard, with some of the best ski slopes in the nation. In summer, Vail offers a relatively serene atmosphere for gondola rides and leisurely dinners without the crowds.

Traveling in spring certainly has its perks. If you can brave cooler temperatures and the occasional rain shower, you'll likely be rewarded with fewer crowds and lower travel rates in many popular destinations, ranging from palm-fringed beaches to cities big and small. U.S. News considered factors like affordability, things to do, must-visit attractions, overall appeal and more to determine the best places to visit in March. Don't forget to cast your vote below to have a say in next year's ranking.

Iguazu Falls

Visiting during Barcelona's shoulder season has its perks, including smaller crowds and lower rates on airfare and accommodations. Plus, average temperatures hover near the low 60s in March, so you won't overheat while exploring must-see sights such as Barri Gòtic (Gothic Quarter) and Park Güell, a whimsical park designed by Antoni Gaudí. What's more, you can explore other popular Gaudí landmarks like Casa Batlló and Basílica de la Sagrada Família without hordes of tourists blocking your view. When you've worked up an appetite, venture to the quiet Gràcia neighborhood to sample authentic Catalan cuisine on a food tour.

Straddling the border of Argentina and Brazil, Iguazu Falls is one of the largest waterfall systems in the world. While the natural beauty of the falls will take your breath away year-round, travelers who plan a trip in March enjoy the added bonus of fewer crowds, pleasant temperatures and cheaper accommodations. Remember to set aside time in your schedule for Iguazu's most dramatic feature, Garganta del Diablo (Devil’s Throat), a semicircular chasm fed by 14 of Iguazu's waterfalls.

Although March falls within Maui's peak season, its excellent weather (think: average daytime temps in the high 70s and low 80s) and prime conditions for water sports and wildlife viewing make it a superb time to visit. Experienced surfers can head to popular surf spots like Ho'okipa Beach and Pe'ahi (dubbed "Jaws") to hang ten, while beginners stick to the waves at Kaanapali Beach. Meanwhile, animal lovers can look for migrating humpback whales during a whale watching cruise. To save some coin, book your Maui hotel and airfare at least a few months in advance.

These five towns on the Italian Riviera are beautiful any time of year, but there are a few benefits to visiting in March. The cooler weather (think: average temperatures sit in the high 50s) makes it a perfect time to hike Cinque Terre's famous trails, although rain may cause some of the trails to close at times. Additionally, many local shops reopen after closing for winter. Since spring is one of Cinque Terre's shoulder seasons, you'll find fewer tourists this time of year, allowing you to comfortably explore the area on foot or by boat.

March marks the end of Cape Town, South Africa's busy summer season, when temperatures begin to drop and crowds thin out. Tourists who plan a March vacation will be rewarded with cheaper rates and pleasant temps in the mid-70s, perfect for exploring top sights like Table Mountain and Camps Bay Beach. Plus, fall kicks off Cape Town's wine harvest, which makes it a great time to explore the world-renowned Constantia Valley wine region . Many festivals and events are also held throughout the month, including the Cape Town Carnival.

Situated between two of Utah 's five main national parks, Moab is an outdoor adventure hub known for its awe-inspiring red rock formations. Travelers can admire them during visits to Arches National Park (where the world's densest concentration of natural sandstone arches resides) and Canyonlands National Park (which is the largest national park in the state). Travelers who time their trip for the beginning of the month will have the best chance of avoiding crowds while still enjoying comfortable weather in the 50s and 60s. Other must-do March activities include hiking, rock climbing, off-roading and camping.

Whether you're enjoying a show at the Vancouver International Dance Festival or admiring cherry blossoms in Queen Elizabeth Park, there are plenty of reasons to visit Vancouver in March. Spend your time on a walking or biking tour of popular neighborhoods like Granville Island and Yaletown, then ride the Skyride gondola to the top of Grouse Mountain for breathtaking views of the city. March temperatures in this Canadian vacation destination are mild in the low 50s, and although you'll likely experience some rainfall, this is a great time to score big on hotel deals.

The reasons for traveling to this German city in March are multifold. Although you'll have to deal with some chilly weather (average temperatures sit in the high 40s), visiting during this shoulder season means fewer crowds and lower prices. March also brings the city's annual Starkbierfest event, a traditional Bavarian beer festival, and St. Patrick's Day, one of the largest cultural events in Munich. When you're not engaging in the festivities, spend the rest of your time sightseeing at famous attractions like St. Peter's Church and the Munich Residenz, the largest city palace in Germany.

While you can spot wildlife in the Galápagos year-round, March is nesting season for animals like green sea turtles, iguanas and red-footed boobies. Keep an eye out near the water, too, as sea lions are known to hang on the beaches. And though March falls within the wet season (you'll want to bring an umbrella), there should still be ample warm, sunny days to enjoy the beach, particularly toward the end of the month.

Boasting 150-plus miles of hiking trails, Big Bend National Park in southwest Texas appeals to travelers with an affinity for the outdoors. Observe wildlife (including more than 450 species of birds), kayak along the Rio Grande or explore Big Bend while horseback riding. Keep in mind that spring is the park's busiest season, so you won't be the only one admiring the spectacular mountain views. Plan accordingly by allotting extra time for waiting in lines and booking your trip accommodations far in advance.  

One of Cozumel, Mexico's biggest draws is its abundance of aquatic activities. The country's largest Caribbean island is one of the best places to scuba dive thanks to its clear water and proximity to the world's second-largest barrier reef. To get in the water, head to Chankanaab Adventure Beach Park to dive, snorkel or swim with dolphins. If you'd rather stay dry, sign up for a glass-bottom boat tour or lounge on one of the island's white sand beaches. Because March is outside the Atlantic hurricane season, you'll enjoy plenty of warm, dry weather.

While the northern half of the world is entering spring, Southern Hemisphere destinations like Sydney are just beginning their fall season. This means travelers will encounter pleasant weather in March (average temperatures hover in the high 70s) that is perfect for taking in some of Sydney's most iconic landmarks, such as the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Sydney Opera House. Other must-do activities include surfing and sunbathing at Bondi Beach and strolling through the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney, Australia's oldest botanical garden.

Visit Punta Mita, Mexico, in March if you want to relax while on vacation. This former fishing village in western Mexico's Riviera Nayarit area is now renowned for its opulent resorts, world-class golf courses and beautiful white sand beaches. Punta Mita's warm weather and clear blue water also make it an excellent place to go scuba diving, surfing and Jet Skiing. What's more, March is one of several months when humpback whales migrate through the region, so you'll want to save time for a whale watching excursion.

March falls within this Laotian city's dry season, meaning you can participate in top outdoor activities like climbing Mount Phousi and taking a boat tour to the Pak Ou Caves without the threat of rain. Plus, the warm weather in the 80s and 90s makes cooling off in the turquoise waters of Kuang Si Falls even more enjoyable. No trip to Luang Prabang would be complete without exploring some of the city's ancient Buddhist temples – Wat Xieng Thong and Wat Wisunarat are two can't-miss sites.  

Although March ushers in some of Jamaica's lowest temps, this time of year is by no means cold. Daytime highs comfortably sit in the mid-80s in March, making Jamaica an appealing destination to spring breakers and those in search of a warm-weather holiday. Vacationers can climb to the top of Dunn's River Falls or hike through Blue and John Crow Mountains National Park. Those looking for a more relaxing getaway can lounge on a variety of white sand beaches or unwind at one of the island's luxurious all-inclusive resorts .

15 Best Mountain Towns in Colorado You Need To Visit

F rom world-class skiing destinations to savory hot-springs soaking spots, there are plenty of amazing mountain towns in Colorado to explore.

As a Colorado native and author of the new guidebook, Colorado Family Outdoor Adventure , I have quite a bit of expertise in this field and am eager to share 15 of my favorite mountain towns throughout the Centennial State. The best mountain towns in Colorado each have something unique to offer families.

15 Best Mountain Towns in Colorado

Elevation: 8,000’

Population: 6,949

Can’t-miss highlight of this Colorado mountain town: This area is home not to just one ski but four world-class ski resorts : Aspen Highlands, Aspen Mountain, Buttermilk, and Snowmass, all accessible with one lift ticket!

Once a summer hunting spot for the Ute tribe, this charming hamlet along the Roaring Fork River became a mining boomtown in the 1880s. Skiing brought it back from the 1893 silver-market crash, starting in in 1947 with Aspen Mountain; three more resorts developed over the next two decades.

As John Denver best described Aspen, it’s a town of cathedral mountains and clear-blue mountain lakes that inspire a “Rocky Mountain High.”

Insider tip: Alleged to be the state’s most photographed peaks, Maroon Bells Scenic Area (located about 12 miles southwest of Aspen) features the two, red-hued “bells”: Fourteeners (14,000 feet+) Maroon and North Maroon Peaks, anchored by stunning Maroon Lake.

The area also offers several popular hikes: a one-mile route on the Maroon Lake Scenic Trail, beginning at the parking lot and following along the lake; the 3.8 roundtrip hike to Crater Lake (difficult and crowded); or the Maroon Creek Trail, roughly 6.4 miles roundtrip, an easier trek that’s less trafficked.

Stay here: The Aspen Meadows Resort is home to the world-renowned Aspen Institute, staffing its own curator to oversee the resort’s hundreds of works of art and indoor galleries/exhibitions (complimentary guest tours available). The summer Aspen Music Festival and School performs on the campus, a favorite for families. Arrange for a packed picnic/wine for the occasion.

Breckenridge

Elevation: 9,600’

Population: 5,186

Can’t-miss highlight of this Colorado mountain town: Opened in December 1961, Breckenridge Ski Resort comprises Peaks 6–10 spanning the southern half of the Tenmile Range.

This spot along the Blue River was inhabited for hundreds of years by the Ute tribe until white settlers arrived in 1859 for Colorado’s Gold Rush. After several “booms,” Breckenridge was at risk of becoming a ghost town by the 1940s during World War II. Saved in 1961 with the opening of Peak 8 Ski Area, “Breck” is Colorado’s largest historic district and a family favorite destination.

Known for decades as a family destination, Breckenridge Ski Resort offers plenty of wide, gentle terrain for beginners (mostly Peaks 8 and 9) and blue groomers (on Peak 7). More experienced skiers and riders can head to Peak 6 (added in 2013) for intermediate bowls and hike-to chutes for experts.

Insider tip: Breckenridge is a fantastic year-round destination but especially in September during the largest Oktoberfest street party in Colorado’s Rockies.

Stay here: Located at the base of Peak 9, the Gravity Haus concept offers several locations throughout Colorado’s mountain regions, focusing on connecting people who see the world as a playground. Featuring 60 curated rooms for the modern outdoor enthusiast, relax in the dry sauna, soak in the Japanese-inspired onsen, or enjoy family-style meals at Cabin Juice.

Cañon City 

Elevation: 5,300’

Population: 17,363

Can’t-miss highlight of this Colorado mountain town: A 10-mile-long chasm carved into granite by the Arkansas River, the Royal Gorge Bridge and Park area was home for centuries to the Ute tribe before being discovered in 1806 by Lieutenant Zebulon Pike during his Louisiana Purchase exploration.

One hundred years later, the land was ceded to the city, and the country’s highest suspension bridge (nearly 1,000 feet high) was built in 1929. Known as America’s Bridge, visitors can walk 1,260 feet across it toward the Plaza Theater, showing a movie on the gorge’s history; Tommy Knocker Children’s Playland; and Aerial Gondolas, carrying passengers 2,200 feet across the gorge.

There are also activities here for all adventure lovers: For the adrenaline junkies, there’s America’s highest zipline, the Cloudscraper Zip Line; the Royal Rush Skycoaster, where passengers are sent in a free-fall swing deemed the “World’s Scariest Skycoaster” (I’ve done it twice!); and the via ferrata, offering guided climbing routes for all levels.

Insider tip: Whether peering at it from 1,000 feet above from the Royal Gorge Bridge, fly-fishing along its banks or riding its churning waters, the Arkansas River is a must-see destination in this area. Boasting Colorado’s longest stretch of Gold Medal Trout waters (102 miles), many visitors come for its whitewater. Roughly 20 different rafting companies are headquartered here.

Stay here: Our family’s favorite spot lodging is at Royal Gorge Cabins , located five miles north of the Royal Gorge Bridge and Park (about nine miles from the city).

Owned by Echo Canyon River Expeditions —which sits across the street from the cabins, next to the company’s restaurant, 8 Mile Bar and Grill—the property features 9 luxury cabins (6 2-bedroom and 3 1-bedroom) complete with indoor-outdoor fireplace and patio seating, as well as a personal cornhole game and hammock (plus a kitchenette, WiFi and TVs).

There are also eight glamping tents— four each of double and single queen beds—and one, two-person log cabin, Pine Creek.

Crested Butte

Population: 1,669

Can’t-miss highlight of this Colorado mountain town: Established in in 1961 just three miles from downtown, Crested Butte Mountain Resort was Colorado’s second resort to open a gondola (after Vail). Considered the birthplace of freeskiing —tricks, jumps, and terrain parks—this resort is known for offering extreme terrain.

Best known as the Wildflower Capital of Colorado , celebrated annually during the Crested Butte Wildflower Festival in July, this former mining-camp supply hub and coal-mining spot is also nicknamed “the last great Colorado ski town.”

Insider tip: A revered mountain-biking destination, the highlight is the Crested Butte Mountain Bike Park , offering 29 trails traversing more than 30 miles of terrain. The park features trails for all skill levels, from the beginner Hotdogger (green circle) to the expert Psycho Rocks (double-black-diamond).

Stay here: There are only a couple hotels at the ski area, so we’ve always chosen Grand Lodge Crested Butte , which includes comfort, convenience, and an indoor-outdoor pool. It’s also located right at the center of the mountain activity.

Can’t-miss highlight of this Colorado mountain town: Once a lifeline for Silverton mines, the historic Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad has continued operating since 1881.

Even if you don’t have time to ride the train to Silverton, a 45-mile, four-hour (one way), cliff-hugging journey, be sure to check out the free museum located in the railyard just outside the Durango depot. There’s a second museum in Silverton’s depot.

A Nationally Registered Historic District, the welcoming downtown takes visitors back to circa 1880, when it was founded by the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad. Located 55 miles east of Mesa Verde National Park , it’s a great base camp for exploring Colorado’s Southwest.

Insider tip: Referred to as “The River of Lost Souls” for the Spanish explorers who died here and whose bodies were never recovered, the Animas River is a popular draw for both travelers and locals. Running right through town and comprising 126 miles, the river offers Gold Medal waters and plenty of whitewater rapids for rafting and kayaking enthusiasts .

For the nature lover who prefers to stay out of the water, head to the Animas River Trail (ART), a 7-mile, shared-use, riverside path that offers access to a variety of parks, open spaces, and more.

Stay here: Let history come alive before your eyes at the historic Strater Hotel. Located in the heart of the historic downtown, this 1887 gem offers 88 unique guest rooms, a Wild West themed saloon, a craft-cocktail Lounge, a fine-dining restaurant, and year-round live entertainment.

Population: 5,880

Can’t-miss highlight of this Colorado mountain town: The town’s greatest claim to fame is its status as the eastern gateway city to the state’s most-visited national park, Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP). When visitors think of Colorado’s expansive blue skies, verdant mountain meadows dotted with wildflowers, and alpine lakes tucked at the base of craggy peaks, RMNP is where to find it.

Home to 355 miles of hiking trails, 147 lakes, and 77 mountains taller than 12,000 feet—including the state’s northernmost Fourteener and park’s highest point, Longs Peak (14,255 feet)—it’s no surprise that it’s the fifth most-visited national park in the U.S.

Here are the best hikes in Rocky Mountain National Park for families.

The former stomping grounds of the ancient Clovis culture, as well as Ute and Arapaho tribes, the town was incorporated in 1917, two years after the national park’s designation. The town’s touristy Elkhorn Avenue is lined with shops, restaurants, and saltwater taffy shops, making it a popular basecamp for visitors to RMNP.

Insider tip: In summer months, the town is jammed with tourists, so residents prefer to visit during fall months. Not only are the aspens beautiful in September and October, but it’s also elk-mating season, called an elk rut, when elk begin gathering and bugling to gain females’ attention.

Stay here: Everyone should stay at least once at the town’s iconic Stanley Hotel , the famous inspiration for the hotel in Stephen King’s “The Shining.”Even if you don’t stay here, you can still take one of the property’s ghost tours.

Can’t-miss highlight of this Colorado mountain town: One of three Summit County towns surrounding Lake Dillon (with Dillon and Silverthorne), the freshwater reservoir set around 9,000 is the centerpiece of activity in this charming mountain town.

Officially named Dillon Reservoir, there are roughly 27 miles of shoreline and a paved, 18-mile bike path that winds around it, which can be accessed at any point. The reservoir is also stocked annually with 50,000 rainbow trout.

Established in 1873 during the Colorado mining boom, Frisco’s pedestrian-friendly Main Street is filled with shops and restaurants. We’ve often stayed here in rental properties when skiing nearby Copper Mountain because it’s so close and a tad cheaper than ski-village lodging.

The Summit Stage also offers free rides throughout Summit County, including to ski resorts. Nearest ones include Breckenridge Ski Resort, Copper Mountain Ski Resort, Keystone Resort.

Insider tip: Connecting Frisco to Vail over Vail Pass (about 10,660 feet), The Vail Pass Bike Path offers many experiences, including riding about 14 miles from Frisco to Copper Mountain Resort and back, or completing the full 24-mile, 1,550-foot-climb roundtrip from Frisco’s Main Street. For the price of a bike rental, visitors can even ride a free shuttle to the top of the pass to cruise 14 miles downhill.

Stay here: Located on Main Street in the heart of the action, the Hotel Frisco is a great mountainside home away from home.

Glenwood Springs

Elevation: 5,761’

Population: 10,326

Can’t-miss highlight of this Colorado mountain town: This city located at the confluence of the Roaring Fork and Colorado River (formerly the Grand River) is home to the world’s largest mineral hot-springs pool , located at Glenwood Hot Springs Resort .

In addition to its famous pool, in 2019 the resort added the Sopris Splash Zone featuring Shoshone Chutes, a river ride that mimics a whitewater experience; Hanging Lake, a wade-in pool perfect for littles; and the Grand Fountain, a splash pad by day and an illuminated show fountain by night.

Native American tribes like the Ute, Comanche, and Arapaho understood the curative nature of this area’s hot springs and vapor caves long before it became a destination for health-minded travelers in the late 1880s.

With the arrival of the railroads in 1887 and the 1888 opening of Glenwood Hot Springs, it quickly became a playground for the well-to-do. Now it’s a must-visit spot for Colorado kids, who love the chance to soak in the city’s world-famous springs.

Insider tip: Carved by the Colorado River, which glides its way through the 16-mile Glenwood Canyon into town, this area is an exceptionally beautiful outdoor-recreation destination. Visitors can bike the Glenwood Canyon Recreation Path , which runs between the Colorado River and I-70. Starting at E. 6th St. in Glenwood Springs and ending in Dotsero, the paved, relatively flat trail spans about 14.4 miles (one way).

Stay here: Serving guests since 1893, the historic Hotel Colorado was renovated in 2020 and is located just 0.3 miles from the Glenwood Hot Springs Resort.

Can’t-miss highlight of this Colorado mountain town: Designed with families in mind, Granby Ranch ski resort comprises four chair lifts over two mountains: East, offering green and blue trails, and West, with more challenging blue and black ones.

There’s plenty of skiing for all levels, and all trails lead to the base area so it’s easy to meet up with your group. In warmer months, the resort is a popular destination for mountain biking, as well as golfing at the resort’s 18-hole Golf Granby Ranch course.

Founded in 1905, this former logging and railroad community is the only Designated Colorado Main Street in Grand County, a program that aims to revitalize communities through grassroots efforts, featuring a lively mix of restaurants and vibrant street art. 

Insider tip: Located just 15 miles from the west entrance of Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP), this town offers a ranch-town vibe that is often less crowded than the park’s gateway towns, Grand Lake and Estes Park.

Stay here: Located 8 miles south of Granby, Snow Mountain Ranch (YMCA of the Rockies) is our favorite family-friendly Granby destination.

It features several lodging options—lodge rooms, cabins, campgrounds (tent and RV), and yurts—with many on-site activities included in the price of a stay such as a mini-golf course, indoor pool, tennis courts, hiking and biking trails, reservoir fishing, lawn games, and the Kiva Recreation Center (roller skating, volleyball, basketball, badminton, tennis, pool, ping pong, etc.). The Schlessman Commons dining hall also serves three buffet-style meals daily.

Grand Junction

Elevation:  4,583’

Population: 66,958

Can’t-miss highlight of this Colorado mountain town: Home to the area’s iconic red-rock cliffs and sandstone spires, the 31-square-mile Colorado National Monument is easy to tour via the 23-mile, paved Rim Rock Drive, offering 19 overlooks.

For centuries, the Ute, Fremont, and other tribes inhabited the Grand Valley—Grand Junction (GJ), Fruita, and Palisade—leaving their history etched in cave paintings and petroglyphs before white settlers came to farm its fertile lands.

Set at the “junction” of the Gunnison River and Colorado River (formerly the Grand River), Colorado’s largest Western Slope town is one of the state’s largest food producers.

Insider tip: The area of Grand Valley is known as Colorado’s Wine Country, the state’s second designated grape-growing region or American Viticultural Area (AVA), where nearly 30 wineries flourish in this temperate climate.

Stay here: The Hotel Maverick , which opened in 2020, is both a hotel and a hospitality teaching facility located on the Colorado Mesa University campus. It’s also home to the only king-sized bunkbed we’ve ever seen, which is great for families.

Can’t-miss highlight of this Colorado mountain town: One of the country’s oldest ski resorts (1942), Ski Cooper is a family-friendly spot that offers a wide variety of terrain for all levels at a cheaper price than larger resorts.

Established as Leadville in 1878, Leadville is the highest incorporated city in North America . Nicknamed the “Two-Mile High City,” it resembles what it must have looked like in the late 1800s and is surrounded by Colorado’s two highest 14ers (14,000-feet+ peaks) Mt. Elbert and Mt. Massive.

The town is the perfect headquarters for recreation in the Leadville and Twin Lakes region, or for visiting the town’s popular ski-resort neighbor, Copper Mountain.

Insider tip: Considered Colorado’s most beautiful resort when it was built in 1879, the Interlaken Resort at Twin Lakes (22 miles south of Leadville) was popular for travelers in nearby mining towns such as Aspen and Leadville to ride horses, fish, and cruise the lakes via steam-powered boats.

Closed in 1950, this National Historic Site is a “ghost resort” that can only be reached by foot or by one-hour, 45-minute boat tours via Twin Lakes Interlaken Boat Tours.

Stay here: Set in a Victorian redbrick building in downtown Leadville, the Delaware Hotel is an 1886 hotel that is a three-minute walk from the National Mining Hall of Fame, one of the town’s most popular and unique highlights.

Pagosa Springs

Elevation: 7,126’

Population: 1,631

Can’t-miss highlight of this Colorado mountain town: Home to the world’s deepest geothermal hot spring , according to Guinness World Records, the town was named “Pagosah” or “healing waters” by the Ute tribe that discovered their therapeutic qualities.

Located at the town’s largest hot springs property, the Springs Resort and Spa , it offers 24 pools ranging from 83 degrees to 114 degrees terraced alongside the San Juan River (includes a mineral-water swimming pool and 5 age 23+ pools). Stay at the resort or buy a day pass. 

Located just 35 miles from the New Mexico border, Pagosa Springs is surrounded by more than 2.5 million acres of wilderness and national forest areas, including the Weminuche Wilderness, the San Juan and Rio Grande national forests, and Southern Ute Indian lands.

With the San Juan River running right through it, plus some 650 miles of recreation trails, there’s plenty of outdoor- recreation opportunities.

Insider tip: Perched at 10,000 feet on the top of Wolf Creek Pass just 30 minutes from Pagosa Springs, Wolf Creek Ski Area boasts “The Most Snow in Colorado,” averaging 430 inches per year. Parking and shuttles to the base are free.

Stay here: We’ve always enjoyed our stays at Springs Resort and Spa , which offers nearly 90 rooms and 24-hour access to the hot springs.

Steamboat Springs

Elevation: 6,900’

Population: 13,452

Can’t-miss highlight of this Colorado mountain town: Situated along Hot Springs Creek about seven miles north of town, Strawberry Park Hot Springs comprises five pools bordered by natural stone. One is basically creek water. Facilities are limited- a tepee and heated cabin for changing, picnic areas, two massage rooms, and basic concessions.

Named by 19th-century French fur trappers who thought one of the natural springs along the Yampa River sounded like a steamboat engine, these former Ute hunting grounds drew settlers to their springs and idyllic ranch land.

Nicknamed “The ‘Boat,” set far from the bustle of the Denver Metro area, Steamboat Springs is also known as Ski Town, U.S.A.® (or also Bike Town USA), home to light, dry snow known as Champagne Powder.®

Insider tip: Bordering the Yampa River Core Trail, the six-acre Yampa River Botanic Gardens— home to 50 gardens, sculptures, and more— debuted in spring 2022 a newly renovated Hummingbird and Butterfly Gardens. The park is free and open to the public May–Oct. (weather permitting).

Stay here: Although not the cheapest option in town, The Steamboat Grand is one of our favorite places to stay, especially during ski season because it’s located at the base of Steamboat Ski Resort.

Population: 2,595

Can’t-miss highlight of this Colorado mountain town: Famous for uncrowded slopes, lack of lift lines, and accessibility—Lifts 7 and 8 are based right in Telluride— Telluride Ski Resort is a beloved skiing destination.

By 1878, this rowdy mining camp first known as Columbia was established as Telluride, a boomtown that continued to prosper with the arrival of the 1890 Rio Grande Southern Railroad. Today it’s a National Historic Landmark District (since 1964), Certified Creative District, and renowned vacation spot.

Insider tip: For a backcountry experience, stay at 66 The High Camp Hut , set at over 11,000 feet (about 15 miles from town). Equipped with a kitchen, wood-fire hot tub, outhouse, sauna, and sleeping amenities for 12. Meet up at designated location and load gear into a snowcat or jeep. The hike—2.5 miles, 1,000-foot climb—takes about two hours.

Stay here: The Hotel Telluride offers unique outdoor-adventure packages, including a Ropes and Rungs rock climbing and via ferrata tour, as well as a Wings Over Telluride bird-watching adventure. I experienced the Two Picks and a Prayer ice-climbing experience, a half-day beginner ice climb at Lower Ames Falls with San Juan Outdoor Adventures.

Population: 4,735

Can’t-miss highlight of this Colorado mountain town: A top destination for skiers and boarders for nearly 60 years, Vail Ski Resort’ s back bowls, expansive terrain, and only-in-Vail views of the Gore and Sawatch mountain ranges are legendary. Nonskiing activities happen at Adventure Ridge (Epic Discovery in summer), including the mountain coaster and tubing at Eagle’s Nest.

Once a summer respite for the Ute tribe, this world-famous ski town at the base of Vail Pass was modeled after Zermatt in the Swiss Alps.

It features five villages: Vail Village, connected with heated pedestrian streets winding along Gore Creek and includes Gondola One; Lionshead, the Bavarian-inspired area set at the base of the Eagle Bahn Gondola; West Vail; East Vail, just east of Vail Golf Course; and Cascade Village. A popular ski destination by the 1970s, it also offers 58 miles of paved recreational paths, 343 miles of mountain-biking trails, and 166 miles of hiking trails.

Colorado has a lot to offer residents: stunning mountain landscapes, outdoor adventures, a strong economy and a solid job market. And it turns out, you don’t have to move to popular cities such as Denver or Colorado Springs to enjoy the benefits of colorful Colorado. According to USA TODAY Homefront findings, those cities don’t even make the top five best places to live in the state.

The research team at Homefront ranked 22 cities in Colorado across 16 different quality-of-life metrics. Grand Junction, Littleton and Loveland took the top three spots, scoring well in categories such as home affordability and low crime rates. These locales are also known for restaurants and entertainment.

Brighton and Commerce City, both in Adams County, ranked lowest mostly due to the high cost of living and poorly rated schools.

With its beauty, relative affordability and seemingly endless activities — from breweries to mountain biking — it’s hardly surprising that Colorado welcomed around 264,500 residents from out of state and abroad in 2022, according to U.S. Census Bureau data . • More than 260,000 people moved to Colorado in 2022.
• Grand Junction is the best city to move to in Colorado, offering affordable housing options for renters and buyers, low crime rates and good schools.
• Notable cities Denver (No. 19) and Aurora (No. 17) ranked low mainly because of high crime rates and hefty homeowners insurance premiums.
• The three bottom cities — all in Adams County — scored poorly across categories such as cost of living, walkability, and number of restaurants and activities per capita.

Why are people moving to Colorado?

Colorado’s snow-capped mountains and moderate temperatures likely offer a welcome change for Americans escaping the not-so-rare heat waves each summer. Plus, Colorado has fewer climate change risks than Texas, Florida, New Jersey or California.

Aside from climate and beauty, the Centennial State is easier on the wallet — Colorado ranked as more affordable than Texas, Florida and California, according to our 2024 study .

Best cities to move to in Colorado

Homefront ranked 22 Colorado cities using 16 metrics to see how they stack up. We looked at livability factors, including activities, walkability and quality of schools. We factored in life expectancy, health care and safety (crime and severe weather). Economic variables — housing affordability and unemployment rates — also affected the rankings.

Overall, Grand Junction is the best place to live in Colorado, followed by Littleton and Loveland. These places excelled in safety, education and access to medical care.

You may be surprised to see popular cities such as Denver (No. 19) and Aurora (No. 17) ranking poorly, but high crime rates and hefty homeowners insurance premiums affected the overall standing.

Aurora lost points because it’s home to one of Colorado’s most rent-burdened communities, with 60% of its residents spending more than 30% of their income on rent.

5. Longmont, Colorado

Longmont has a population shy of 100,000. But we expect the city to hit, and likely surpass, that mark soon. This charming city is conveniently located about 20 minutes from downtown Boulder, making it a convenient option for people who work or spend a lot of time in the metropolis but still want affordable housing.

Longmont is about a 45-minute drive from Denver and Rocky Mountain National Park and just an hour’s drive from Eldora Mountain skiing.

Longmont secured the fifth spot on our list of top cities in Colorado because it has the second-highest life expectancy — 82.6 years — which is higher than the state average of 80. This Boulder County city is tied with counties in Larimer and Douglas for the title of the lowest unemployment rate (3.4%), and its school district ranked 8 out of 10 on NeighborhoodScout.

4. Fort Collins, Colorado

Fort Collins, in Larimer County, is the largest city on our top five list — its population is roughly 168,700. This historic haven lies just an hour north of Denver and is complete with a vintage trolley, ghost tours and Old Town buildings that date back to the 1800s.

Situated in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, Fort Collins offers a perfect combination of natural beauty, outdoor activities and urban amenities.

Home to Colorado State University, Fort Collins is unsurprisingly one of the most educated cities in the state, with 58% of adults holding a bachelor’s degree. Comparatively, only 36% of Coloradans have one.

Fort Collins scored well in our ranking for sharing the lowest unemployment rate.

3. Loveland, Colorado

Behind Fort Collins, Loveland is the second most-populated city in Larimer County with about 77,000 residents. Tucked away in the base of the Rocky Mountains, the so-called Sweetheart City offers residents the convenience of a big city with the charm of a small town. It’s well known for its vibrant arts scene, including several sculpture parks and public murals.

It’s all love in Loveland. The city has the fifth-lowest crime rate in our study, with less than 30 crimes per 1,000 residents — the state average is 36 crimes per 1,000 residents. Loveland shares the title for the lowest unemployment rate and has the third-best access to primary care providers.

In addition to all its perks, living in Loveland is comparatively affordable, with typical rent hovering around $1,751 — the fourth lowest of the 22 cities we analyzed.

2. Littleton, Colorado

Tucked away just 25 minutes south of downtown Denver, Littleton is a unique and charming city brimming with turn-of-the-century architecture and antique shops. Littleton is aptly named; it’s the smallest city by population in our top five and the second smallest on our list overall, with only 45,500 residents.

Despite its small population, this cozy city has plenty to do. It’s just a 20- to 30-minute drive from Red Rocks Amphitheatre and the Coors Brewery. Littleton has the largest number of restaurants and activities per capita, which helped it rise to the No. 2 spot in our ranking.

Littleton is home to one of the best-rated school districts in Colorado, tied in our study’s top spot with Highlands Ranch and Boulder. Additionally, it has great healthcare access, with almost 10 primary care physicians for every 1,000 residents.

However, living with these perks comes at a cost. Our analysis reveals that Littleton is one of the most expensive places to live, and 55% of its population is rent-burdened, slightly above the state average of 53%. These financial factors likely kept it from securing the top spot.

1. Grand Junction, Colorado

Grand Junction might just be Colorado’s best-kept secret. This city has incredibly diverse landscapes — mountains, rivers, canyons, deserts and forests —  as well as affordable housing and low climate risks . Downtown Grand Junction also offers a variety of eateries and activities, ranking fourth and third in these categories, respectively. 

“Grand Junction is on the verge of significant growth and in the path of progress,” said Christi Reece , top Grand Junction real estate agent with HomeLight. “Our location — midway between Denver and Salt Lake City and surrounded by endless outdoor recreation opportunities — makes us an ideal place to live, work and play.”  

According to our analysis, Grand Junction is the second-most affordable place for prospective home buyers and the third-most affordable for renters. Reece emphasized the affordability point: “More affordable than Colorado resort towns and less crowded than Denver, we still have all the amenities needed to live the Colorado dream.” Additionally, homeowners here enjoy the lowest annual homeowner’s insurance premium, likely thanks to the area’s tame weather.

While Grand Junction has the second-lowest median income in our study, its lower cost of living balances the scale. It has the third-lowest percentage of rent-burdened residents and typical home values are six times the median income, which places Grand Junction above average compared with other Colorado cities we ranked.

Relocating to Colorado? Here’s what you need to know

Colorado offers something for everyone — spectacular scenery, thriving craft breweries, outdoor activities and charming architecture. If you’re unsure which city is right for you, first-hand research is a great way to get to know the landscape.

“Look before you leap! Do some research before visiting,” said Rob Klein, top Fort Collins real estate agent at Kittle Real Estate with HomeLight. “Then visit a few areas that you have an interest in and interview the people in the community to see what cities and towns may work best for you and your lifestyle.”

If you’re ready to set out on a Colorado adventure, follow these tips to ensure your move is as smooth as the bunny slopes:

• Land a job: Colorado has a strong job market, with its major industries in technology, aerospace, biotech and outdoor recreation. State and local governments are also significant employers, and you can check the Colorado Workforce Centers for resources and job listings. Colorado also welcomes teachers as the state needs educators .
• Find a home: Check to ensure your potential future home isn’t in an area prone to wildfires. If you’re planning to buy a house, consider the age of the home, especially the roof, as it will affect your insurance premium and the likelihood of roof repair .
• Find a reliable moving company: Research interstate moving companies for a trustworthy service to simplify your relocation. Get quotes from at least three moving companies to ensure you get the best deal.
• Bundle up: If you’re not used to winter, Colorado’s heavy snowfall and colder temperatures may take you by storm. Plan to prepare your future home for blizzards. Consider your car warranty as well since wintery weather may affect your vehicle.
• Prep for the altitude: Colorado has some of the highest elevations in the country. If you’re not used to high altitudes, take a few days to relax before you start unboxing dishes .

For this study, the research team at USA TODAY Homefront ranked 22 cities in Colorado across 16 metrics to determine the best cities to live in. The population threshold was set at 40,000. Cities were ranked on the following metrics: 

• Walkability score from Walk Score
• School district ratings on a scale of 1 (low) to 10 (high) from NeighborhoodScout
• Number of restaurants from Tripadvisor per 1,000 residents
• Number of activities from Tripadvisor per 1,000 residents
