Weather in South Africa in January

The weather in South Africa in January is one of the main reasons why this is such a popular month to visit the country. It’s summer season on the continent, and whilst some African countries experience wet weather in January, South Africa is relatively dry.

Temperature

Temperatures vary across South Africa in January, with hotter weather in the north and more breezy conditions by the coast. Average high temperatures can reach around 27°C depending on where you visit, with low temperatures dropping quite considerably to 16-19°C when it gets dark.

Sea Temperature

Beach holidays in South Africa are a particularly popular choice for those who visit in January, with average water temperatures between 20°C and 26°C that make swimming in the sea a refreshing treat. It is shark season in some parts of the country in January, but you are only likely to encounter small, harmless varieties of the species when you’re out swimming.

Clouds and Rainfall

Rainfall varies across South Africa in January, with places such as Cape Town and Port Elizabeth only seeing around 3 days of rain each month, whilst Johannesburg and Durban see over 10 days of rain on average. There is moderate cloud cover throughout the month, with rainier parts of South Africa experiencing more overcast days.

Sunshine Hours

There are around 10 hours of sunshine every day across most parts of South Africa, and roughly 14 hours of daylight. Sunrise tends to be around 6 am and sunset is at 8 pm, giving you lots of time to enjoy the country before it gets dark.

Where to go in South Africa in January

' title=

The city of Cape Town on the coast of South Africa is one of the country’s most popular locations, but you shouldn’t let its busy reputation deter you from planning a visit. The weather in January offers ideal conditions for enjoying all that this city has to offer, from the urban attractions to its beautiful beaches.

South Africa’s coast is best enjoyed at this time of year, and Cape Town offers a brilliant range of beaches for you to visit. To continue enjoying the great outdoors, there are also several nearby national parks offering a variety of wildlife spotting opportunities or the famous Table Mountain that overlooks Cape Town and is a great spot for breathtaking views.

KwaZulu-Natal

If you’re after diversity, excitement and a lot of brilliant beaches, then the province of KwaZulu-Natal is just the right location for your January South Africa holiday. This brilliant part of the country has everything from mountain ranges to the old battlefields of ancient Zulu tribes.

Visiting the beach in South Africa in January is an absolute must if you are visiting, and the south coast of KwaZulu-Natal is perfect for this. You can enjoy the wonderful weather and warm sea temperatures for as long as you want, then head inland for an adrenaline rush as you try abseiling down Oribi Gorge or bungee swing from the top of Lehr’s Falls.

Things to do in South Africa in January

Kirstenbosch

Enjoy the Flowers at Kirstenbosch

The Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens near Cape Town are a wonderful place to visit in January, as many of the flowers come into full bloom as the summer weather heats up. There is a huge variety of colours and scents to enjoy as you stroll through the gardens, and the hot, dry January weather is absolutely perfect for spending a day surrounded by nature.

Drive the Garden Route

The Garden Route stretches from the east to the West Cape of South Africa and is known as being one of the most beautiful routes for a road trip in the country. January’s weather is ideal for lazy days spent exploring the coast, relaxing on the beach or getting lost in the lush vegetation that the area is so famous for, and you’ll get to enjoy the very best of the country as you visit cities, villages, beaches and vineyards.

Scuba Dive with Sharks

The warm weather conditions make swimming in the sea a popular pastime for those visiting South Africa in January, but this month is also an ideal time to try scuba diving. Numerous locations offer safe scuba diving experiences with the sharks that flock to the coast at the start of the year, offering a thrilling and totally unforgettable marine experience, if you’re brave enough!

Crowds & costs

South Africa can be quite busy at the start of January, as it is still the Christmas holidays for many people and there are plenty of visitors coming to the country to make the most of some winter sunshine. Things usually quieten down towards the end of the month however, and you’ll find that prices for flights and accommodation start to drop as well.

January is low season for the majority of safari holidays, as the weather during the summer season means that the greenery in the grasslands and desert is very thick, making it harder to spot most wildlife. However, this means that many game reserves will be much quieter than in the middle of the year, so if you’re not too fussed about spotting any of Africa’s big five then it’s a great, and less expensive, time to go.

January festivals & events

' title=

Kaapse Klopse

Also known as the Cape Town Minstrel Festival, Kaapse Klopse is a huge parade and celebration that takes place right at the start of January in Cape Town on South Africa’s coast. Residents and performers dress up in bright, glittering costumes to take part in a huge procession through the streets, accompanied by a riot of live music and dance.

The name ‘Minstrel Festival’ refers to the minstrel troupes that are playing different songs as they pass by spectators. You’ll see a huge variety of traditional performances as part of the festival, and it’s one of the most exciting events in South Africa in January.

Thaipusam is a Hindu festival that is celebrated by Tamil speaking communities in South Africa between January and February, and is an event dedicated to the Hindu god Murugan. This religious festival occurs during the full moon and involves a variety of traditions including body piercing and processions where participants carry offerings to the god, as well as music and dance.

You'll find something exciting to do in South Africa at any time of year © pixdeluxe / Getty Images

From dynamic Cape Town and cosmopolitan Johannesburg to staggering expanses of wilderness such as the Kalahari and the Drakensberg Mountains, South Africa has a breadth of experiences that is hard to match .

The variety of the landscape , weather and festival seasons throughout the country means the best time to visit will depend on what you want to do when you get there.

In general, the climate in South Africa is warmer in the north and cooler in the south. You'll also find different weather on the coasts compared to the elevated plateau that makes up most of the country, where it tends to be drier. Usually, the Indian Ocean coast feels more tropical, while the weather on the Atlantic coast is milder, though cold fogs and hot desert winds can still roll in.

Cape Town and the Western Cape are unique in having their rainy season in the winter (June to August). In the rest of the country, the rains arrive during the southern hemisphere summer (November through March), but the deluges rarely last for long and give you the chance to photograph dramatic thunderstorms.

However, most visitors' biggest consideration is the vibrant festival calendar and the annual migrations and breeding seasons for the country's diverse wildlife populations. Here's everything you need to know about picking the best time for your South African adventure.

A man dressed in a white suit with a red, white and blue sash at the Cape Town Street Parade

November to March is peak festival season, with peak prices

November to March is summertime in South Africa, with daytime highs reaching 32°C (90°F), often with quite a lot of humidity. If you’re looking to visit during the peak season, planning ahead is essential. Accommodations in coastal areas and national parks are often booked out months in advance, and popular vacation spots see accommodation prices rise by 50% or more.

That said, if you have the budget to travel in the high season, you can enjoy a host of festivals and events. AFROPUNK , a massive international multi-day music festival that draws artists from all over the world, kicks off in December. Held annually on January 2, the Cape Town Minstrel Carnival (known locally as Kaapse Klopse) is a high-spirited street parade dating from the mid-1800s with important links to overcoming apartheid and South Africa's long history of enslavement.

Cape Town’s Pride Festival is held in late February or early March, followed by the Cape Town Cycle Tour , which brings in cycling enthusiasts from all over the globe. March also sees the  Klein Karoo Nasionale Kunstefees , one of South Africa’s largest arts festivals, held at Oudtshoorn in the Western Cape.

The Lowveld – made up of open grassland and woodland areas between 150m and 610m (492ft and 2001ft) above sea level – is steamy and warm, and the landscapes are lush and green; the Highveld, at a higher altitude, is slightly cooler. This time of year is especially good for walking and beach bumming in the Western Cape.

April, May, September and October mean lower prices and great wildlife watching

South Africa's shoulder seasons see smaller crowds and several important festivals – including April’s Splashy Fen Music Festival in Durban. The big lure in the fall (April–May) is wildlife watching, as the tail end of the dry summer weather brings wildlife out into the open. The rutting season for impala – one of South Africa’s most abundant antelopes – begins in April, with displays of dominance (like the clashing of horns) increasing as the days get shorter.

The spring months of September and October bring the best chances for cetacean encounters in whale-watching centers such as Hermanus . Wildflower season peaks in late August in the north and early September in the south, but blooms can appear from July depending on the rains, and the spectacle continues into October if it’s not too hot.

June to August is the best time for budget travelers

The South African winter from June to August brings lower prices (except for safaris) and smaller crowds. This is the rainy season in Cape Town and the Western Cape, but there’s still plenty of sunshine around. Look out for wallet-friendly winter deals at Cape Town restaurants.

Elsewhere in the country, winters are much drier, and conditions are ideal for a safari. Be prepared, though, for chilly nights and cold early morning game drives. Top winter festivals include the National Arts Festival (June) in the Eastern Cape and Knysna’s 10-day Oyster Festival in June or July.

South Africa's game reserves are best in the winter months

Rain can be an obstacle to your travels if you plan to go on safari. Northern game reserves such as Kruger National Park are driest from May to September, during the South African winter. While you might not have the lush backgrounds to your photos that you would in the spring and summer, wildlife is often easier to spot because the vegetation dies back and animals congregate around water holes.

The chilly winter nights also mean fewer mosquitoes, but you'll need to bring layers to keep warm during dawn game drives. For safaris in the Western Cape, the South African summer months are drier, but this coincides with the busy Christmas period and South Africa’s summer school holidays.

Peak whale-watching is in September and October

Though whales and dolphins can be seen year-round off South Africa’s southern and eastern coasts, September and October are the peak cetacean-spotting months. Between June and November, southern right whales and humpbacks migrate to and from Antarctica to breed and have their babies in the warmer waters off Mozambique and Madagascar. May to June also sees a massive run of sardines that attracts whales, dolphins, sharks and sea birds ( Durban is an excellent base to watch the spectacle).

While you’ll see more from a whale-watching boat, whales often come close enough to the shore to be spotted from land. This is particularly so near the town of Hermanus , celebrated by the World Wildlife Fund as one of the world's top whale-watching destinations, where whales can be seen as early as April. Gqeberha (formerly Port Elizabeth or PE) on the Eastern Cape is known as the world bottlenose dolphin capital, and pods are frequently seen between January and June.

The Best Times to Visit South Africa, According to Locals

For wildlife and wine, coastline and culture, South Africa is the ultimate destination.

Best Time to Visit for Smaller Crowds

Best time to visit for lower prices.

  • Best Time to Visit for Good Weather
  • Best Time to Visit for a Wildlife Safari
  • Best Time to Visit for a Beach Holiday
  • Best Time to Visit for Festivals
  • Worst Time to Visit South Africa

In many ways, South Africa is a country of abundance. Nicknamed the “Rainbow Nation” by Archbishop Desmond Tutu after its first democratic election in 1994, South Africa is overflowing with iconic wildlife, truly epic environments and vistas, and world-renowned hotels and restaurants. Pre-pandemic, the country of warm, friendly people drew more than 10 million annual visitors; it’s now rebounding steadily, with four million people arriving in the first half of 2023.

“South Africa is an especially compelling nation, with many cultures, languages, and traditions to explore and enjoy,” says Cape Town local Simon Mandy, managing director of The Royal Portfolio , a South African family–owned collection of luxurious properties that include The Silo Hotel in Cape Town and Royal Malewane in Kruger National Park. “This is reflected in our cuisine, which draws on a wealth of fresh, seasonal, local ingredients and multiple influences to create unique flavor sensations.”

Rodger Shagam/Getty Images

What’s more, it’s a well-known fact that those spending U.S. dollars get amazing value for their money — all in a country where English is spoken and there are flawless beaches, endless savannas, and impressive mountains. Having visited South Africa’s coastline, wine country, Garden Route, and wildlife preserves over the years in January, February, October and December, I have experienced a variety of weather conditions, from extreme wind to fog to baking heat. Oftentimes, it feels like multiple seasons in one day, especially in Cape Town, so I always pack a lot of adaptable layers.

Roar Africa founder and CEO Deborah Calmeyer , a safari expert and part-time Cape Town resident, loves being there most in March, when “there are no crowds and perfect warm weather to enjoy all the beauty of Table Mountain and the emerald Winelands without the December rush of people.”

For her, the reasons to visit South Africa are as numerous as its healthy populations of zebras, lions, rhinos, and elephants: “the level of service; the restaurants, in both the cities and the bush; and the diversity of experience — the cosmopolitan culture of Cape Town , the beauty of the Winelands, the ochre dunes of the Kalahari Desert, and the abundance of pristine bush, teeming with wildlife.”

  • High Season: December through February
  • Shoulder Season: September to November; March to May
  • Low Season: June to August

Jess Macdonald/Travel + Leisure

If you don’t like crowds, avoid Cape Town during its busy holiday surge in December and January, says Calmeyer, who adds that the most thronged months for safari tend to be December and June through August. The rest of the year, adventurers are typically blessed with more intimate experiences for viewing wildlife plus fewer vehicles around exciting sightings. “There is so much beauty throughout the other months of the year and, provided you have the right gear, you’ll have a spectacular experience in this country of contrasts,” Calmeyer adds. According to Mandy, the quietest times to travel in South Africa are October, November, April, and May — the country as a whole receives fewer visitors during these months.

In Cape Town, travelers will typically find May through August “the lightest on the pocket,” says Mandy, adding that the best pricing on a full South Africa itinerary — one that includes a safari — can be found in the shoulder season of April and May, their autumn. September, which tends to be somewhat quiet, can also be more accessible price-wise, according to Calmeyer. Conversely, December is when prices hit their peak, and oftentimes hotels and lodges enforce minimum stay periods.

Best Time to Visit for Good Weather

“South Africa has a very pleasant and favorable climate year-round,” says Mandy, who notes that spring and autumn offer the most balanced weather in the majority of the country. Mandy’s personal favorite season is spring, fromSeptember to November. “It offers beautiful displays of blooming gardens and wildflowers on safari,” he says. “The weather is perfect — neither too hot nor too cold.” Between October and May — essentially the shoulder seasons and summertime (a.k.a. high season) — Calmeyer says the weather on the Western Cape is her favorite. The same goes for safari destinations across the country. “The weather is brilliant,” she says. These are also the best months for hiking, in her opinion, as there's little rainfall (contrary to Johannesburg, where most of the rain occurs in their summer). One disclaimer: Because South Africa is so large, with lots of geographical diversity, there are plenty of climate quirks as you traverse different regions.

Best Time to Visit for a Wildlife Safari

In Calmeyer’s expert opinion, “anytime” can be the right time to take a wildlife safari — if you use the right local travel advisor with an intimate knowledge of the country’s parks and regions, which range from the Kalahari in the Northern Cape to the most famous Kruger National Park . “There are epic opportunities for wildlife viewing 12 months a year,” she says. Typically, the drier months (June to September) are considered excellent times because “animals gather around water sources in the absence of rain,” says Mandy, meaning they can be easier to spot. The vegetation also typically dies back during these months, making smaller creatures more visible. He adds, “If you’re an avid bird-watcher, the warmer months (November to February) see the arrival of migratory birds and a dramatic increase in volume of the dawn chorus.” That time of year is referred to as green season, when the weather tends to be rainy and warm in wildlife reserves and parks.

Best Time to Visit for a Beach Holiday

There’s no question that summer in South Africa (December to February) is the best time to sunbathe on one of the many spectacular beaches that wrap its long, 1,770-mile coastline. Still, don’t expect leisurely swims in the sea. “Don’t forget that it is the Atlantic Ocean, so you are unlikely to get in, as it’s cold,” says Calmeyer. “However, for those who enjoy colder water, Cape Town is fabulous in December and January, with white-sand beaches, abundant water activities, and incredible snorkeling and diving opportunities in the Great African Seaforest” — the giant bamboo kelp forest seen in the documentary "My Octopus Teacher." For wetsuit-clad surfers, summer tends to equal smaller waves — plus wind — while the peak surf season is March to September, when the water is at its most frigid (low 70s). Regardless of the season, Mandy adds, “Be warned: The African sun is harsh, so don’t forget your sunscreen.”

Best Time to Visit for Festivals

Between lively farmers markets in Cape Town and concert series in the Cape Winelands, the pervasive energy in South Africa is festive. The Cape Town Art Fair and Cape Town International Jazz Festival , which both occur each February, are great draws. And I can personally attest that the Summer Sunset Concerts that take place from November through April at Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden are captivating affairs worthy of a bountiful BYO picnic. Mandy adds, “The popular concerts offer live music in a picturesque setting beneath Table Mountain.” Harvest season in the Winelands — Franschhoek, Stellenbosch and Paarl — spans February and March, and is an exciting and beautiful time to visit both storied iconic estates and up-and-coming young winemakers.

Worst Time to Visit South Africa

South Africa is one of those places that holds its appeal all year long. However, Mandy warns that some travelers could find the peak of summer a bit too hot — though it typically stays in the 70s and only rarely reaches the 90s — and winter temps in remote mountainous regions in the Northern Cape too cold.

Safari Travel Planner

It is a wonderful time of year to visit the South African city of Cape Town , when the sunny and warm weather is ideal for beach hopping and wine touring.

In January, when Zambia is experiencing its rainy season, many parks’ camps close. The open camps however are a world of emerald green vegetation and singing migratory birds. The vibrant colors of the flora and rivers full of water provide fantastic photographic opportunities for a Zambia Safari .

South Africa in January: Weather, Tips & Endless Sunshine

An aerial view of Cape Town city centre with Table Mountain in South Africa in January.

  • ~ mins read

While snow blankets much of the Northern Hemisphere, South Africa in January is a summer paradise. Pristine beaches, unspoiled landscapes, world-class wine and unmatched hospitality have all become synonymous with this unique destination, and they are best enjoyed in summer.

However, if you are heading to South Africa in January please keep in mind that thunderstorms rage in the late afternoon across the country’s north and provide a dramatic backdrop to the iconic Johannesburg skyline, while some might find high humidity levels on the east coast uncomfortable. Barring this, January is one of the best times of the year to dive into the Indian Ocean and enjoy swimming in its warm waters.

South Africa Weather in January

The morning sunlight baths the Blyde River Canyon in Mpumalanga.

January is one of the hottest months in the country. However, climate conditions vary substantially from north to south. Since both the Western Cape and the Eastern Cape experience rain in winter, they are hot and dry during this time of year. On the other hand, it is much more humid and rainy during this month in the eastern province of KwaZulu Natal. The landlocked provinces of Gauteng, Mpumalanga and Limpopo are summer rainfall regions but this is rarely a hindrance as it usually rains late in the afternoon with dramatic thunderstorms bringing momentary relief from soaring temperatures. The average temperature in South Africa in January is between 16 °C and 26 °C during January, with the mercury breaching the 35°C mark in some outlying areas in the Northern Cape.

Weather in South Africa in January - Rainfall and Temperatures

Why visit south africa in january.

Early morning lighting on the waterfront in Cape Town.

Start off your new year by enjoying the many spoils of South Africa in January. Beaches are packed with people during this time of year and sunshine is unavoidable throughout the land. The country is still on a holiday high and the weather in South Africa in January is a welcome escape from a dreary northern winter. Below are a few reasons why visiting South Africa in January is a must.

  • Holiday events: The first half of January coincides with school holidays in the country, leading to a surge in the number of domestic travelers. Plenty of markets and events aimed at holiday goers pop up across the country during this time.
  • Endless sunshine: The sun seemingly never sets in the country during this month. Cape Town, for example, receives more than 14 hours of sunshine on average each day in January.
  • Explore cities: The bustling metros of Johannesburg and Pretoria are victims of bumper-to-bumper traffic during most of the year, except in the first half of January when many businesses are still closed and streets wide open.

Where to go and what to do

People in Cape Town celebrating the Minstrel Carnival.

Beaches around Cape Town are packed to the brim in the first half of January. Therefore, those who prefer solitude might enjoy venturing to more remote locations up and down the coast. Charming fishing villages like Paternoster and Yzerfontein offer a welcome break from the crowds and have plenty of scenery to enjoy.

The Garden Route , along the country’s southern coast, is one of the most beautiful stretches of road in the world, winding through rough, rocky coasts and lush tropical forests. Small towns like Victoria Bay, Sedgefield and Wilderness always seem to have an air of tranquility about them and could be the perfect place to enjoy South African weather in January, away from the crowds. When the school year starts in mid-January, major hotspots like Cape Town and Knysna return to their normal pace and traveling is much more comfortable.

Although there is never a bad time to go on a safari in South Africa , you might want to prepare for rain before traveling to Kruger National Park . Located in the northeastern part of the country, this wildlife reserve and its surrounding areas see high temperatures in January and are also in the midst of the rainy season. Opt for a trip to Addo Elephant Park if you wish to avoid rain since Eastern Cape is not so wet in January.

For decades, the Cape Town Minstrel Carnival has taken to the streets on January 2. This over-the-top celebration is known as the ‘second new year’ and sees thousands of revelers in gaudy costumes taking to the streets, playing merry tunes and performing infectious dances. This unmissable celebration in the center of Cape Town truly embodies the jovial South African spirit.

There are tons of things to do in South Africa in January thanks to pleasant weather conditions and a high season in full swing. But you might want to consider a customized trip to discover the hidden gems of this country and avoid crowds. Feel free to reach out to our local travel experts if you are interested in a personalized itinerary.

Where are the best places to go to in January in South Africa?

What to expect when you travel to south africa in january .

The first half of January is summer holiday time in South Africa. It’s the hottest month across the country and beaches and seaside towns are at their busiest. In the south and west, January is also the driest month of the year, but up towards Durban, and inland, the hot days almost always end in spectacular thunderstorms. This is especially true in Gauteng where January is Johannesburg’s wettest month.

cape town_south_africa

Schools resume in the middle of January causing a huge increase in traffic on the national roads. It’s best not to travel on the weekend before schools return, but once the rush dies down, late January is a great time to explore the coast. Fewer people also means more accommodation options and prices are generally lower outside of the holiday period. In the Western Cape, the sun sets after 9:00 pm for most of January, with sunset in Johannesburg an hour earlier on average. The long evenings are ideal for beach picnics and evening barbecues (or braais) and the smoke and smell of cooking fires drifts from back gardens and braai areas everywhere. The west coast and central regions can be particularly hot at this time of year. Hot summer evenings in the semi-desert Karoo are spectacular, but daytime temperatures can easily exceed 40°C. The Kruger National Park and the other inland national parks are always an option, but while January’s lush vegetation is beautiful, it also makes the animals harder to spot. On the plus side, park gates operate from dawn to dusk so there’s as much as 2.5 hours’ more time for game drives in summer. If you would like to inquire about our car hire options, one of our consultants will readily assist with any questions you may have.

When's the best time to visit South Africa?

South Africa is on the whole a dry, sunny country. Overall, the best time to visit South Africa is typically during the dry, warm months of autumn (March to May) and spring (September to November). You'll find during this window pleasant weather for outdoor activities and wildlife viewing, while avoiding the crowds and higher prices of the peak summer season.

That said, when considering when to go to South Africa, you need to take into account the country’s distinct climatic zones. Though South Africa on the most part is known for its warm to hot temperatures, the climate does vary a bit depending on the region.

In Cape Town and the Garden Route coastal belt, summers tend to be warm, mild. However, rain can fall at any time of the year and winter days can be cold and wet. Subtropical KwaZulu-Natal has warm, sunny winters and tepid seas. In common with the Lesotho highlands, the province’s Drakensberg range has misty days in summer and mountain snow in winter.

Johannesburg and Pretoria lie on the highveld plateau and have a near-perfect climate. You can expect hot summer days frequently broken by dramatic thunder showers, and dry winters with chilly nights. East of Johannesburg, the lowveld, which includes Kruger and much of Swaziland, is subject to similar summer and winter rainfall as the highveld. However, its considerably lower altitude results in far greater extremes of temperature.

Generally speaking, the peak tourist season in South Africa is during the summer months of December to February. This is when the weather is warmest and driest, and for many a great time for outdoor activities such as safaris, beach holidays, and hiking.

You'll find that during this time popular tourist destinations such as Cape Town, Kruger National Park, and the Garden Route tend to be bustling with visitors. Accommodation and attractions may be more crowded and prices may be higher during this period, and you'll certainly want to book as far ahead as possible.

Some specific destinations in South Africa will have their own peak seasons. In Hermanus, renowned for its excellent whale watching opportunities, the peak time is usually from July to November when southern right whales migrate to the area to calve and nurse their young. Similarly, for shark cage diving enthusiasts , the peak season in places like Gansbaai is typically from June to September when the waters are cooler, attracting larger numbers of great white sharks.

What is the rainy season in South Africa?

The rainy season in South Africa varies depending on region. While rain can fall any time of the year across the Cape, showers typically hit Cape Town and the Western Cape from June to August. On the other hand, the northern regions tend to be rainy from November to February and dry from May to October.

Most when planning a safari trip to South Africa will aim for the dry season that spans from May to September. During these months, animals gather around water sources — which makes sightings easier. This is a great time of year for game drives as the weather brings cooler (and more comfortable) temperatures, especially during the mornings and evenings when animals are most active.

If you're particularly keen on spotting newborn animals, you’ll want to plan your visit for May or June, which is the birthing season for many species. July to September on the other hand offers prime opportunities to encounter predators like lions and leopards, as this is when they are the most active.

If you’re traveling to South America for birdwatching or photography, you might enjoy the low wet season from October to April. This time is known for great birdwatching due to the breeding activity, lush landscapes, and diverse bird populations — including resident species and migratory birds from Europe and Asia.

No matter when you choose to go to South Africa, you’re likely to have your trip fall during one of this country’s lively festivals. South Africa is a melting pot of cultures, and its festivals reflect this diversity, celebrating everything from music and dance to food and heritage.

When Is the Best Time to Visit South Africa?

By CNT Editors

Clifton Beach in Cape Town South Africa

When is the best time to visit South Africa?

The best time to visit South Africa depends on where you want to go and what you want to do on holiday. The temperatures range based on where in the country you are visiting, with the north seeing warmer temperatures than the south of the country. The Western Cape is famed for experiencing rainy seasons in the winter, but the Indian Ocean coastline provides warmer and more equatorial temperatures. Needless to say, it's important to plan!

What are the summer and winter months in South Africa?

The summer months last from December to March, while the winter months range from June to September.

When is the rainy season in South Africa?

Cape Town experiences the rainy season during the winter months, with the wettest days ranging from June to August. The rest of the country’s rainy season occurs during the summer, with November to March having the highest precipitation levels.

Two lionesses standing among tall grass southern Kalahari South Africa

When is the most affordable time to visit South Africa?

Again, it depends on what you want to do on holiday. It is cheapest to visit South Africa during the winter months (June to September) unless you are planning a safari , as winter is peak safari season, with the drier climate making it ideal for wildlife spotting .

When is the best time to go on a safari in South Africa?

The best time to go on safari is between May to October. The winter months bring dry, clear days ideal for animal tracking, but pack some warm clothes for those cooler nights. The wildlife also tends to concentrate near reliable water sources during these months, which makes game viewing more predictable. If you’re looking for a more detailed guide, look at our guide to planning our first South Africa safari.

Humpback Whale calf playing on surface of ocean Port St. Johns

When is the best time to go whale watching in South Africa?

Winter is the best whale-watching season in South Africa when most pods travel to and from the Antarctic to breed and calve off the waters of Mozambique and Madagascar. The sightings start as early as May and can last into early December, with Hermanus being a favurite for whale-watching, especially in September.

Top tip : The migration also coincides with the Sardine Run , between May and July, where the sardines spawn in the South African waters, attracting super-pods of whales and dolphins, diving birds and even sharks. We recommend setting up a tour off the coast of Port Saint Johns.

Why you should visit South Africa in January

why-you-should-visit-south-africa-in-january

Sometimes the best way to start the New Year is with a new adventure - and why not let that adventure be in none other than South Africa, the Rainbow Nation.

South Africa in January is often believed to be the peak season of the summer. It's also a great time to go camping . The activities and the places to visit aren't short on thrill and excitement, so there's absolutely no reason why you shouldn't plan your trip at the start of the year in this dazzling country.

But, just in case you needed some convincing, here is our guide to when, where, why, and what you can do in South Africa this January - or the next.

If you are thinking of immersing yourself into the diversity of South Africa, have a look at our South African tours - and get ready to make the best memories.

The weather

The very first thing that most of the people fret about when it comes to visiting is South Africa's January weather - the weather can be quite hot and humid owing to the persistent flow of warm currents through the Indian Ocean.

The best thing about visiting South Africa in the month of January is the fact that the climate is quite pleasant. The temperature tends to border around 19 to 29 degrees. The nights are comparatively colder than the daytime. So, if you get cold easily, pack a few warm clothes.

Places to visit

South Africa is gradually gaining more recognition for its adventurous activities - from Namibia to the capital city of Cape Town, the places to visit are endless.

Johannesburg

Commonly known as Jo'burg or Jozi, this rapidly changing city is the vibrant heart of South Africa.

Its centre is smartening up and new loft apartments and office developments are being constructed at a rapid pace. The hipster-friendly neighbourhood of Maboneng is considered one of the most successful urban-renewal projects in the world.

Addo Elephant National Park

Addo Elephant National Park is the third-largest national park in Southern Africa and home to not only elephants but to Africa's Big Seven: lion, elephant, rhino, buffalo, leopard, southern right whale and the great white shark.

When Addo was proclaimed a national park in 1931, there were only 11 elephants left; today there are more than 600 in the park, and you'd be unlucky not to see some.

Durban on the east coast of South Africa has often been overshadowed by its popular sisters, Johannesburg and Cape Town, but this laid-back seaside town is slowly making waves.

The sunny weather, warm Indian Ocean, and warm Mozambique Current keeps Durban warmer than the rest of the country. Dubbed South Africa's playground, the day always promises to be warm whatever the season.

Kgalagadi Frontier Park

There are many reasons to visit the Kgalagadi such as the red dunes, star-filled skies and fabulous sightings of big game like leopards, cheetahs and gemsbok, but visiting to see the enormous Kalahari lions and experience the vast landscape is at the top of the list.

Predators are the Kgalagadi's biggest attraction.

Kruger National Park

The Kruger National Park has amazing game viewing opportunities. All of Africa's iconic safari species - elephant, lion, leopard, cheetah, rhino, buffalo, giraffe, hippo and zebra - thrive here.

The Kruger National Park is home to over 12,000 elephants, 27,000 African Buffalo, 2,000 leopards and 2,800 lions. It's also regarded as the best place in the world to see a leopard

This is unspoilt beauty and the perfect destination for any nature lover.

Cape Peninsula

Experience the 114 curves and 9km drive of one of the world's most scenic and majestic drives - Chapman's Peak, Cape Town. Hop off at one of the many picnic spots where you can enjoy and take photographs of the breathtaking views of the rugged cliffs, the beaches, the ocean, whales and dolphins, and more.

Things to do

Now that we have walked ourselves through the list of places to visit, it is time to go through the things to do.

A coming-together of cultures, cuisines and landscapes, there's nowhere quite like Cape Town, a singularly beautiful city crowned by the magnificent Table Mountain National Park.

Local cuisine

To truly enjoy South African food, you have to actually be in South Africa. It's all about shared history, your surroundings, and the people with whom you've gathered to break (braai) bread.

South African cuisine includes both cookery practised by indigenous people of Africa such as the Sotho- and Nguni-speaking people.

The colonial influences include that of white European people of mostly Dutch, German, French and British descent and their Indo-Asian slaves or servants. The latter includes the cuisine of the "Cape Malay" people, which has many characteristics of Indonesia.

Hluhluwe & Imfolozi National Park

Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Park (HIP) is one of South Africa's premier Big Five game reserves made famous by Operation Rhino.

Both Hluhluwe and Imfolozi Game Reserve were separate parks now combined and is one of the oldest in Africa. Apart from the Big Five, HIP has some special animals such as the endangered Wild Dog, Cheetah and red Duiker, which you are unlikely to see in many other reserves in the province.

Wildlife safari

When you go on safari in Africa, you'll experience a new world of wildlife adventure, fantastic scenery and cultural highlights - it is something completely different to a regular holiday and not only will you have the time of your life while you're there, but you'll build up countless memories and knowledge.

Kirstenbosch Gardens

Situated along the slopes of Cape Town's towering Table Mountain, Kirstenbosch Gardens is one of the most pristine botanical gardens on the planet.

According to South African Tourism, Kirstenbosch Gardens is home to approximately 7,000 plants species. It's also part of the Cape Floral Kingdom and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

What to pack

Packing for South Africa is not extensive - the days are warm and the nights a bit cooler if not cold, so ensure to pack a few warm clothes just in case.

Apart from this, you can keep your essential toiletries, medicines, a hat, a pair of sunglasses, and an easy to carry backpack so that you carry little things around easily.

Given January's long, sunny days, we highly recommend visiting South Africa for a combination of sightseeing, exploring the cities, seeing wildlife as well as nature, and relaxing on the beach. South Africa has beautiful ocean destinations that won't disappoint, which lots of potential for activities, enjoying beautiful landscapes, and learning about this magical country.

1. Kick-Off Your South African Adventure in Cape Town on a Beach

Cape Town is South Africa's oldest city, and it is a buzzing city with lots of nightlife, a busy harbor, and beautiful nature surrounding it.

Given that Cape Town's weather is warm and dry in January, we recommend visiting one of the incredible beaches Cape Town has to offer. Boulders Beach, Bikini Beach, and Clifton Beach are all great choices amongst many more options, with water sports and activities on offer at the beaches.

If you have more time there are also lots of options for day-trips from Cape Town. To learn more about what we recommend to see in the city, check out our piece about visiting South Africa in March for more tips on museums and sightseeing, and our piece on visiting South Africa in April for more information about climbing nearby Table Mountain.

2. Delve into South Africa's History in Johannesburg

Many international flights land in Johannesburg, and we recommend staying for a couple of days to explore the city. There are a lot of important museums in the city, and the nearby townships also play an important role in South Africa's history.

We recommend visiting the Apartheid Museum, Nelson Mandela Square, Nelson Mandela's House, the Johannesburg Botanical Gardens, and if you are traveling with your family, there is also Gold Reef City Theme Park to keep everybody entertained.

3. Snorkel or Dive off the KwaZulu-Natal Coast

South Africa's eastern coast, particularly the KwaZulu-Natal coast which is not far from South Africa's border with Mozambique, has some of the most beautiful snorkeling spots in South Africa on offer. January is a great time of year to do this, particularly in Sodwana Bay, when temperatures are warm in the daytime.

The reefs are home to turtles, eel, and hundreds of colorful fish species.

The area is also a good spot to go on a safari, with the nearby parks being home to hippos, rhinos, hyenas, buffalos, zebras, wildebeest, and chameleons.

4. See Lions with your Own Eyes in Kruger National Park

While January is hot in Kruger National Park, you can't miss it. Most safari tours would see you going on both early morning and late afternoon game drives, to avoid the heat, and you also would be in a covered vehicle for the duration of your trip.

Visiting Kruger National Park in January has some perks too, as there are lots of newborn animals, and there are lots of birds to spot due to migration trends.

And, of course, you can't miss the big five: the lions, leopards, rhinos, elephants, and buffalos are waiting for you!

High Season: Busier and More Expensive

January falls in South Africa's peak tourist season, which runs from November to March in its summer months. This is because the weather is great, and many visitors come from the Northern Hemisphere to escape the colder months.

As a result, the beaches are busier and the safari parks might be too. We recommend booking in advance if you're looking to visit South Africa in January. Global Highlights can help you book your ideal trip in advance to make sure you get to see everything you want to in South Africa.

You'll particularly notice more crowds of tourists around New Year's Day (January 1), when many visitors will be around having celebrated Christmas and New Year's in South Africa. It is also a national holiday, and certain restaurants and museums might be closed as a result so we recommend planning ahead.

What to Wear in January

January is a warm time of the year to visit South Africa, and we recommend bringing lots of light-colored clothing in natural fabrics. Cotton trousers, linen shorts and shirts, or dresses and skirts are a good idea to beat the heat.

We also recommend bringing plenty of mosquito spray, sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat to protect yourself from the sun, especially if you are planning on spending some time on the beach, on a boat, or walking around during the daytime. If you want to go snorkeling, you can either bring your own equipment if you prefer using that, or you usually will be able to rent some.

As always, supportive footwear is a must. For visitors looking to be more active and go on a hike during their time in South Africa, we also recommend bringing proper hiking gear.

When is the best time to visit South Africa?

  • The Cape Peninsula
  • Month-by-month

There isn’t one best time to visit South Africa. It’s a year-round destination due to its varying regional climates and wildlife opportunities.

For wildlife spotting, head to the northern regions. While it can be rainy from November to February, this is also the best time to go birding. Alternatively, you might prefer to visit in winter (May to September), when the cooler conditions are ideal for viewing big game.

You could also head south to experience whale watching on the Cape between July and November. If you’d rather enjoy warmer temperatures, head to the Cape between November and February (their summer) when it’s hot and dry, with temperatures of 73°F to 79°F.

Safari highlights in january.

Nature doesn’t follow a script. Every day on safari is filled with special moments and unexpected sightings. However, some travel highlights are tied to the seasons. Read on if you want some inspiration on where to go on safari in January.

Wildebeest Calving Season in the Serengeti, Tanzania

During January and February more than a million wildebeest take a break from their perpetual migration to have their young. They settle in the Ndutu area of the Southern Serengeti to calve and nurture their newborns until they are strong enough to start their journey north. Within a three-week period about half a million wildebeest are born. Thousands of zebras and gazelles follow the same script, and the abundance of babies attracts an all-time high of predators to the area.

The Okavango–Makgadikgadi Zebra Migration in Botswana

Much less known than the wildebeest migration in East Africa is the annual zebra migration between the Okavango Delta and Makgadikgadi Pans NP in Botswana. Triggered by rain, about 20,000 zebras travel the 500km return route to spend January to March at the pans. As most animal migrations in southern Africa have been eradicated due to fences and human habitation blocking the ancient routes, witnessing this great trek is extremely special.

Excellent Time for Gorilla Trekking in Uganda

January is a prime time for gorilla trekking in Uganda. Although Uganda has a very wet climate, January is one of the drier months. Gorilla trekking is offered throughout the year, but continuous rain in the Wet season can make forest paths very slippery and this can make the tracking more challenging. And, as you’ll get just one precious hour to spend with these gentle giants, the dry conditions in January are perfect to enjoy this once-in-a-lifetime experience to the fullest.

Perfect Time to Climb Mt Kilimanjaro in Tanzania

You might see Mt Kilimanjaro on a clear day while on safari in Kenya or Tanzania. For most of us that it enough. However, if you want to climb Africa’s highest mountain (and the world’s tallest free-standing mountain) you might want to consider what is the best time to take on this great challenge. January is an ideal month as it is relatively dry, not too busy, and there is a good chance of plenty of snow on the summit.

South Africa marks ‘Freedom Day,’ 30 years since apartheid ended, amid discontent with the ANC

Nelson Mandela casts his vote in 1994

South Africans celebrated their “Freedom Day” on Saturday, commemorating their country’s pivotal first democratic election on April 27, 1994, that announced the official end of the racial segregation and oppression of apartheid.

South Africa marked the 30th anniversary with 21-gun salutes and remembrances of that momentous vote, when millions of Black South Africans decided their own futures for the first time, a fundamental right they had been denied by a racist white minority government.

The first all-race election saw the previously banned African National Congress party win overwhelmingly and made its leader, Nelson Mandela, the country’s first Black president four years after he was released after decades in prison.

But Saturday’s celebrations of the momentous anniversary were set against a growing discontent with the current government.

From the Archives: Nelson Mandela: Anti-apartheid icon reconciled a nation

Nelson Mandela, who emerged from more than a quarter of a century in prison to steer a troubled African nation to its first multiracial democracy, uniting the country by reaching out to fearful whites and becoming a revered symbol of racial reconciliation around the world, died Thursday.

Dec. 5, 2013

Here’s what you need to know about that iconic moment and a South Africa that’s changing again 30 years on:

A turning point

The 1994 election was the culmination of a process that began four years earlier when F.W. de Klerk, the last apartheid-era president, shocked the world and his country by announcing that the ANC and other anti-apartheid parties would be unbanned.

Mandela, the face of the anti-apartheid movement, was released from prison nine days later, setting him on the road to becoming South Africa’s first Black leader.

South Africa needed years to prepare and was still on a knife-edge in the months and weeks before the election because of ongoing political violence, but the vote — held over four days between April 26 and April 29 to accommodate the large numbers who turned out — went ahead successfully.

A country that had been shunned and sanctioned by the international community for decades because of apartheid emerged as a full-fledged democracy.

People queue in a long snaking line acrosd a field in an image from above.

Nearly 20 million South Africans of all races voted, compared with just 3 million white people in the last general election under apartheid in 1989.

Associated Press photographer Denis Farrell’s iconic aerial photograph of people waiting patiently for hours in long, snaking queues in fields next to a school in the famed Johannesburg township of Soweto captured the determination of millions of Black South Africans to finally be counted. It was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize.

“South Africa’s heroes are legend across the generations,” Mandela said as he proclaimed victory. “But it is you, the people, who are our true heroes.”

Apartheid falls

The ANC’s election victory ensured that apartheid was finally dismantled and a new constitution was drawn up and became South Africa’s highest law, guaranteeing equality for everyone no matter their race, religion or sexuality.

Apartheid, which began in 1948 and lasted for nearly half a century, had oppressed Black and other nonwhite people through a series of race-based laws. Not only did the laws deny them a vote, they controlled where Black people lived, where they were allowed to go on any given day, what jobs they were allowed to hold and whom they were allowed to marry.

30 years on

Current South African President Cyril Ramaphosa — a protege of Mandela — presided over the celebrations at the Union Buildings in Pretoria, the seat of government.

“Few days in the life of our nation can compare to that day, when freedom was born,” Ramaphosa said in a speech. “South Africa changed forever. It signaled a new chapter in the history of our nation, a moment that resonated across Africa and across the world.”

“On that day, the dignity of all the people of South Africa was restored,” Ramaphosa said.

The ANC has been in government ever since 1994 and while it is still recognized for its central role in freeing South Africans, it is no longer celebrated in the same way as it was in the hope-filled aftermath of that election.

South Africa in 2024 has deep socioeconomic problems, with severe poverty that still overwhelmingly affects the Black majority. The official unemployment rate is 32%, the highest in the world; it’s more than 60% for people ages 15-24.

Thirty years into freedom, thousands of kids in South Africa still walk miles to school

Thousands of kids in South Africa’s poorest, most remote rural areas still face a miles-long walk to school nearly 30 years after democratic change.

Nov. 13, 2023

Millions of Black South Africans still live in neglected, impoverished townships and informal settlements on the fringes of cities in what many see as a betrayal of the heroes Mandela referred to. South Africa is still rated as one of the most unequal countries in the world.

The ANC is now largely being blamed for the lack of progress, even if the damage of decades of apartheid wasn’t going to be easy to undo.

Another pivotal election?

The 30th anniversary of 1994 fell with another possibly pivotal election as a backdrop. South Africa will hold its seventh national vote since the end of apartheid on May 29.

Analysts and polls predict that the ANC will lose its parliamentary majority for the first time as a new generation of South Africans make their voices heard. The ANC will likely have to enter into complicated coalitions with smaller parties to remain part of the government.

South Africans still cherish the memory of Mandela and the elusive freedom and prosperity he spoke about in 1994. But the majority of them now appear ready to look beyond the ANC to attain it.

Imray writes for the Associated Press.

Delta is reinforcing its No. 1 position as the largest U.S. carrier to Africa this winter by relaunching daily* service to Lagos, Nigeria (LOS), from  New York-JFK on Dec. 1. Fleet enhancements in service to Accra, Ghana (ACC), and South Africa are also underway.

The airline carries more than half a million customers between the U.S. and Africa each year on more than 34 weekly flights.

“These enhancements reflect our dedication to meeting the evolving needs of our customers,” said Joe Esposito, Delta’s Senior Vice President of Network Planning. “We’re expanding our options for customers to experience the premium service and elevated hospitality they expect from Delta.”    Delta currently operates daily service between Atlanta and Lagos and, with the resumption of daily New York-JFK service, will offer a total of 14 weekly flights to Nigeria in December through the first half of January and 10 weekly flights for the remainder of winter 2024.

Customers on this flight will have a choice of Delta One, Delta Premium Select, Delta Comfort+ and Main Cabin experiences on the  Airbus A330-200 . Once on board, customers in Delta One can look forward to an extensive food and beverage program that includes thoughtfully curated menu options, as well as specialty snacks and premium beer, wine and spirits. Customers flying in Delta Premium Select will have more space to relax and stretch out, with a wider seat, deeper recline, an adjustable footrest and leg rest.

All customers can enjoy a wide selection of in-flight entertainment options – movies, TV series, music, podcasts and more – via Delta Studio. Delta also partners with diverse suppliers worldwide for in-flight products such as artisan-crafted amenity kits and beverages like Thrive Farmers Tea.

Premium upgrades in service to Ghana and South Africa

As the first U.S. airline to initiate service to Ghana, Delta remains the largest operator in the U.S.-Ghana market, offering year-round daily service from New York-JFK.

Furthermore, in late October 2024, Delta will upgrade its aircraft serving Ghana to the 281-seat Airbus A330-900neo , adding nearly 1,000 more seats each week, providing 30% more capacity between Ghana and the U.S. The aircraft features four differentiated cabin experiences: Delta One Suites, Delta Premium Select, Delta Comfort+ and Main Cabin.

Delta One Suites feature a sliding door for enhanced privacy, memory-foam mattress and soft bedding made from recycled materials. Delta One customers can also enjoy more beverage options and a seasonal chef-curated four-course meal.      Delta is also upgrading its aircraft from Atlanta to South Africa, where it operates 10 weekly flights year-round to Johannesburg (JNB) and Cape Town (CPT). With the introduction of the higher-premium 35H  Airbus A350-900 , this upgrade will provide an additional eight Delta One Suite seats, bringing the total to 40, along with improved operational performance. Customers can look forward to these changes for JNB effective Jun. 20 and CPT on Sept. 9.   For more information and to book travel, visit delta.com .
