Wonder of the Seas

Symphony of the Seas

No. 9: Symphony of the Seas - Royal Caribbean International

Symphony of the Seas is truly a massive entertainment destination on the water, featuring Broadway-style productions (like "Hairspray"), and the awe-inspiring AquaTheater shows with first-rate performers. Experience the Ultimate Abyss, the tallest slide at sea, the surf simulator, and the challenging sports and bar and arcade. With seven distinct "neighborhoods," with bars, restaurants, and clubs, this Royal Caribbean gem ensures excitement and fun for all.

Allure of the Seas

No. 8: Allure of the Seas - Royal Caribbean International

Guests aboard Allure of the Seas look forward to sea days because the ship is loaded with so much to do. Thrill-seekers can zip line, rock climb, skydive, and surf, or for something less adrenaline-pumping, splash around at the H20 Zone Water Park. Nighttime entertainment includes thrilling high dive feats at the outdoor AquaTheater, performances of the Broadway hit "Mamma Mia!" and ice skating shows.

Norwegian Encore

No. 7: Norwegian Encore - Norwegian Cruise Line

There's always nonstop excitement on the Norwegian Encore cruise ship. Feel the adrenaline rush at the largest racetrack at sea, catch award-winning shows, and savor global flavors at the plethora of different dining venues onboard. From jaw-dropping acrobatics to exclusive performances by professional musicians, this ship blends sophistication with excitement. Indulge in culinary delights at several eateries onboard, join fun dance parties, watch an evening show, and stay up past your bedtime at a number of venues.

Regal Princess

No. 5: Regal Princess - Princess Cruises

The Princess Theater aboard Regal Princess is one of the largest theaters in the fleet. Within, passengers are treated to mesmerizing musical productions, as well as a variety of other live acts. A poolside screen shows movies, sporting events, and concerts under the stars (with free fresh-popped popcorn), while the Princess Watercolor Fantasy Show presents a stunning spectacle of water and light dancing in time to music.

Koningsdam

No. 4: Koningsdam - Holland America Line

Unlike many ships with traditional theaters, Koningsdam's World Stage can transform with multiple configurations to best fit multiple productions. You can also sing along at Billboard Onboard or enjoy the Rolling Stone Rock Room which presents live classic rock. Meanwhile, the sounds of Memphis set sail at B.B. King's Blues Club.

Carnival Vista

No. 3: Carnival Vista - Carnival Cruise Line

Fun takes many forms aboard Carnival Vista. For example, SportsSquare features an attraction found on only three Carnival ships: SkyRide, a combination between a bicycle and a zip line. And the Carnival Multiplex screens IMAX films, while a three-deck-tall main theater hosts multiple Playlist Productions on each sailing.

Carnival Breeze

No. 2: Carnival Breeze - Carnival Cruise Line

With Carnival's "Fun Ship" mentality, it's no surprise that Breeze is a contender in the entertainment arena, especially for kids and teens, who have things like Seuss at Sea, SportsSquare ,and WaterWorks to enjoy. There's plenty on offer for adults, too: pickleball, live concerts, Punchliner Comedy Club, and live musicals by Playlist Productions.

Carnival Celebration

No. 1: Carnival Celebration - Carnival Cruise Line

Carnival is known as the "fun" cruise line and their Celebration ship is made for good times! This lively vessel boasts an abundance of high-caliber entertainment venues, live music happening throughout the ship all day long, a Punchliner comedy club, thrilling waterslides, and their famous roller coaster at sea, Bolt. With many casual and upscale dining options and nightly deck festivities, the Carnival Celebration is truly a nonstop party.

The best cruise lines for entertainment

Entertainment and activities on cruise ships have undergone a phenomenal facelift since the yesteryears of The Love Boat . Gone are the days of clay-shooting off the bow or smoky piano bars.

Modern onboard entertainment is more likely to induce a gasp, squeals and eye-watering, side-splitting laughter.

One of the big advancements made in modern-day entertainment is many cruise lines partner with Broadway producers to bring spectacular shows on board ships. Royal Caribbean, for instance, has brought to its ships’ stages hits such as Cats, Hairspray and Mamma Mia!

Princess Cruises works closely with Broadway legend Stephen Schwartz, the composer of Wicked, Godspell and Pippin, who produced Magic To Do exclusively for the cruise line. The musical has been dazzling audiences since its debut.

Cunard offers West End quality productions, held in its stately Royal Court Theatres. The traditional British cruise line has productions with the Royal Shakespeare Company on board the line’s flagship Queen Mary 2, including Boundless as the Sea and Miss Littlewood. For Pride and Prejudice fans, don’t miss the Being Mr Wickham BBC adaptation for the stage, including the original roguish Mr Wickham himself, Adrian Lukis.

Newcomer Virgin Voyages though has pushed the boat out and created some of its own big hit shows. One of its most popular shows, Duel Reality, retells the story of Romeo and Juliet with an elaborate circus twist.

On Royal Caribbean’s Oasis Class ships, water meets drama in the AquaTheater. Olympic-level high divers leap into the air and perform stunts and aerial acrobatics from two nine-metre diving platforms.

Royal Caribbean has fantastic Broadway shows

Boutique and luxury lines, though, can provide a more intimate experience. Oceania Cruises and Regent Seven Seas Cruises, for instance, offer vocalists and classical music not just in their main theatres but around the ships’ public spaces. And small-ship line Azamara caters for Sir Elton John fans with inspired shows from the Rocket Man and big band productions.

The bigger, contemporary ships have gone above and beyond to offer their guests experiences that were once thought to never be seen at sea. Norwegian Cruise Line is where you’ll find three-storey go-kart tracks and virtual-reality rides. Celebrity Cruises’ new Edge-class ships feature unique areas such as the Eden, an indoor garden where, by evening, roving performers come out to play and entertain. And on Virgin Voyages, guests can get inked with a tattoo before hitting the various nightclubs on the all-adults ship. The Manor, Virgin Voyages’ flagship nightclub space, is a two-storey, three-bar space named after Sir Richard Branson’s first recording studio.

For families, Royal Caribbean excels with teen activities like the FlowRider Surf Simulator, bumper cars, ice rinks, rock climbing and the tallest slide at sea. And if you’re looking for opportunities for your kids to socialise while on holidays, there is a range of youth programs designed to encourage children to meet others in their age group. The Adventure Ocean youth program aims to educate kids aged 3–12 years about the world around them through science experiments, themed parties and art and crafts.

A Cunard couple sits in the theatre for a show.

Paul Gauguin Cruises has an emphasis on immersing children on board in the destinations on the cruise itinerary. When in the South Pacific, for example, the boutique line offers the Moana Explorer Program. This invites children and teens (aged 7–15 years) to try island excursions, underwater adventures, science, watersports, games, treasure hunts, star-gazing, Polynesian tattoos and more.

Small luxury cruise lines offer specific programs in the destinations they sail. In the Last Frontier, Oceania offers the Alaska Explorer Youth Program for aspiring adventurers to learn about the wildlife and ecosystem of the region.

Luxury lines, while they might not be known for their big-scale productions, have a focus on education as part of the onboard experience. For instance, Regent Seven Seas and Oceania Cruises have artists in residence and culinary cooking schools on their fleets. Windstar, too, has immersive onboard programs where experts will stay on board throughout the voyage.

River cruise lines, due to their size, have thought of creative ways to entertain guests. Particularly on sailings through Europe, lines Travelmarvel, Scenic, Uniworld and Avalon Waterways not just connect guests with communities on land, but also on the ship.

They have set the standard on board and have local artisans that come on the ships and host activities ranging from mixology classes to paint and wine classes, evening port lectures and dance parties.

On the Mekong, Scenic bring local entertainment onboard the ship

Here's why Virgin Voyages' entertainment is now the best on any cruise

Ashley Kosciolek

"What the f*cking f*ck just happened?" flashed across a series of screens, uncensored, shortly after Persephone decided she was in love with Hades. Demeter, Persephone's mother, was not happy about the new underworld coupling.

No, it wasn't a confusing dream I had after a particularly stressful day. It was just another night in the Red Room theater on Virgin Voyages ' new Resilient Lady. The performance, dubbed "Persephone," convinced me that the line's shows are now the absolute best at sea — partly because they push boundaries with their adult language and themes and partly because they feature some of the best singers, dancers, acrobats and aerialists I've ever seen on a ship.

best cruise lines for entertainment

Resilient Lady debuted with an inaugural season of Greek Isles cruises from Athens (hence, the show's name), complete with shiny, new nighttime entertainment options. They rely as much on racy sexual references, forbidden love stories and notes of S&M and burlesque as they do the incredible talent of the cast. The show concepts are modern and captivating, and most were designed from scratch through partnerships with big-name production companies.

Here, I explore how Virgin Voyages has created, tweaked and darn near perfected its entertainment offerings.

For more cruise guides, news and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Virgin Voyages' entertainment evolution

best cruise lines for entertainment

A high-energy dance and acrobatics show, an immersive nightclub activation that features three hours of burlesque in a library, and S&M-heavy dinner theater (complete with a metaphorical threesome) are just a few of the new entertainment options cruisers can experience on Resilient Lady.

The line's latest vessel is largely the same as sister ships Scarlet Lady and Valiant Lady in terms of layout, food and quirkiness. However, each ship has its own entertainment, drawing tons of repeat cruisers to the new cruise line backed by business mogul Richard Branson.

best cruise lines for entertainment

Learnings from the first two ships have influenced the types of shows created for Resilient Lady, as well as how they were created. Virgin is notorious for pushing hard against the boundaries of standard cruise-ship productions. Sometimes it works; sometimes, it doesn't.

One show, "Never Sleep Alone" — a one-woman performance where a "sex therapist" asks attendees to share bits of their sexual history with strangers (no, thank you) — has been removed from the original two ships following passenger feedback. (Cruise line officials tell me it might return eventually.)

"'Never Sleep Alone' was us pushing, pushing, pushing the limits, and a lot of people loved the show," said Richard Kilman, Virgin Voyages' vice president of entertainment, during an interview with TPG. "But some people weren't sure. I think there was a perception created that wasn't really what it was. It's a comedy cabaret show."

best cruise lines for entertainment

"It also tied up a band of ours because we had a live band every time we did the show ... Now we have these five musicians — we have a trio and a duo — so we've essentially doubled the opportunity to have live music in different areas of the ship. People love live music, and it gives us more variety with live music."

On the other hand, "Duel Reality" — a modern take on "Romeo and Juliet" that's punctuated by rival "gangs" and jaw-dropping stunts like aerial acrobatics, hula-hooping and juggling — is so well-liked that it will tour on land. This marks the first time a show created specifically for a cruise vessel has gone from ship to shore.

best cruise lines for entertainment

Ultimately, all of Resilient Lady's new main shows feel like winners to me. It helps that they were created alongside well-known entities like famed Brooklyn nightclub House of Yes and the Weiner Entertainment Group, whose owner worked on New York's version of "Sleep No More" — an interactive "choose your own adventure" performance that splits you off from your group and allows you to wander through several floors of the old warehouse where it takes place.

In addition, a rotating roster of musicians, comedians and magicians perform on board for a few weeks at a time before switching out. Every one of them was spectacular.

"Our intention when we started this was to create entertainment experiences that people would happily pay money for if they were on land," Kilman said.

I'd say the endeavor was a success. Here's a breakdown of what you can expect from each new title on Resilient Lady's proverbial marquee.

Shows you won't want to miss on Resilient Lady

Another rose.

best cruise lines for entertainment

When Virgin Voyages tapped Weiner Entertainment Group to create a new show that's a partnership between the ship's entertainment and food and beverage teams, the result was "Another Rose."

"The original launch of Scarlet Lady was intended to have 'Another Rose' on it," Kilman explained. "And so, it's been like three years in the wings waiting for that right moment ... The world changed, and it really hadn't been the right time to bring that kind of show back."

Now it's here in full force.

best cruise lines for entertainment

As Resilient Lady's only added-fee show and dining venue, "Another Rose" is dinner theater at its finest. You can sit in one of three locations: balcony, floor or premium near the stage. All tickets cost $50. When you enter The Manor — the ship's nightclub area, where the event is held — a crew member will hand you a wearable magnetic flower in a color that corresponds to your seating section.

best cruise lines for entertainment

From there, you'll walk down a mirrored hallway set aglow with thousands of white lights — the most Instagrammed location on the ship, I'm told — where servers offer you an alcoholic welcome drink. (It's the first of three adult beverages included in the price.)

After servers direct you to your section, members of the cast hand out real roses. They might also select you to move to another location in the club to partake in one of your courses — a very "Sleep No More" touch.

best cruise lines for entertainment

Dinner is a four-course set menu that offers cruisers two appetizers (sweet potato chaat with tamarind, cilantro-mint chutney, yogurt and pomegranate seeds; and a tuna bomb with avocado green goddess dressing, spicy soy and semolina puri), a main course (choice of pan-roasted sea bass with moilee sauce, basmati rice grit and roasted okra; or braised short rib with Kashmir chili-coconut sauce, basmati rice grit and scallions) and a dessert.

I left feeling just the right amount of full, although I only took one bite of the dessert — the world's tiniest piece of cheesecake — which fittingly tasted like a rose. There's also a vegetarian menu available. (I don't eat raw tuna, so I ordered the vegetarian celery apple bomb for my second appetizer, and it was fantastic.)

best cruise lines for entertainment

Alcoholic drinks are served throughout the meal. Tipples include Love Potion (gin, Cointreau, citrus and lavender), Elixir of the Poppy (Amaro Averna, jasmine tea and silver shimmer) and a glass of Champagne, which shows up in between the other two.

The show, which happens around you as you eat, is a blend of dancing, aerial acrobatics and small-group interaction with the cast. The storyline follows a princess forced to choose between two men she loves. Ultimately, she picks and marries one of them. Her husband then falls in love with the discarded suitor, and the trio ends up in a steamy throuple by the end of the performance.

best cruise lines for entertainment

Despite the wonkiness of it all, the show was captivating to watch, and the food was, hands down, the best I ate on the entire cruise. It was seasoned to perfection — not too bland, not too spicy and with just the right amount of flavor. The timing of the service was also impeccable, coinciding flawlessly with the show. There wasn't too much time between courses; instead, there was just enough for attendees to watch a bit of the performance without constantly being distracted by food.

In terms of both the show itself and the delectable cuisine, Virgin's entry into dinner theater succeeds where other lines have failed. In particular, I'm thinking of Norwegian Cruise Line, which had fantastic entertainment but terrible food when it offered a similar concept years ago.

Lola's Library

best cruise lines for entertainment

Hold on to your favorite titles because there's a book bandit on the loose.

Three-hour-long "Lola's Library" is a series of performances — a "nightclub activation," as Kilman calls it — divided into three one-hour chapters that run consecutively from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. a couple of times per voyage. The experience was created in partnership with No Ceilings Entertainment, which runs the Mayfair Supper Club at the Bellagio in Las Vegas.

Passengers can dip in and out as they please, taking in one or two parts on one night and returning again for the rest or staying for the entire performance from start to finish. Kilman said the concept was born out of a need to make the same nightclub appealing to cruisers for more than one night on a weeklong voyage.

best cruise lines for entertainment

"When people go to Vegas or New York, if you're going to go for a long weekend or a week, you're going to go to a nightclub on a night; you're not going to go to the same nightclub four nights in a row," Kilman said. "That's just not a thing. Here, we have people sailing with us for a full week, so how do we make the nightclub more appealing, where people will want to come back [and not] feel like they're doing the same thing?"

When you arrive at The Manor, you can sit wherever you'd like and settle in to meet Lola, a librarian who keeps the library open for some after-hours hanky panky.

One night, after everything shuts down, a book bandit steals several tomes, and Lola wonders how she's going to explain their absence to her boss, Mr. Dick. (Of course, that's his name.)

best cruise lines for entertainment

What begins as a burlesque-style show in the first chapter eventually takes a more S&M route, featuring a few amusing sexual tropes: The sexy librarian (Lola); the ugly-duckling nerd-turned-heartthrob, who's secretly sporting six-pack abs (Lola's assistant, Dewey); and the French maid (Mary, the cleaning lady, who isn't French and who we find out later in the show is actually an engineer).

There's also a completely random character called Jack the Stripper, a serial flasher who's a play on Jack the Ripper. He was my absolute favorite, simply for the shock value.

It ends up being more funny than raunchy when he poses as other characters before stripping down to almost nothing. It happens several times throughout the show, but imagine my utter surprise when he, with his borderline dad bod, pulls off an entire aerial routine wearing nothing but boxers with little red hearts on them.

best cruise lines for entertainment

I've never tried acid, but I imagine watching this show is similar to what would be going on in my brain if I did. Take all of the above, and swirl it around with singing, dancing, acrobatics and pole dancing to music from Blondie, Michael Jackson, Tina Turner and The Police. Sprinkle in some nods to "Star Wars," appearances by the Seven Dwarfs (who, of course, are gay) and dirty references to polishing Harry Potter's wand, and that about sums it up.

This show receives high marks from me because it kept my attention — and kept me laughing — for three hours. The unexpected twists were impressive (Jack the Stripper) and boundary-pushing (gay Seven Dwarfs).

It's also interesting to note that Celebrity Cruises once tried a similar approach to entertainment, featuring a somewhat disturbing and hard-to-follow three-hour show in the Eden lounge on its newest cruise ships. Ultimately, the show had to be pared down to 90 minutes and was eventually replaced by a series of shorter unrelated performances. Virgin's idea of splitting "Lola's Library" into three easily digestible segments makes the concept more audience-friendly.

Mind Mangler

best cruise lines for entertainment

The Mind Mangler is no ordinary magician. The concept was born from a character created by Mischief Comedy, the company responsible for "The Play That Goes Wrong" and "Magic Goes Wrong." It's one of the few shows Virgin Voyages has licensed rather than creating something new, according to Kilman.

You won't find tired illusions; instead, you'll witness a comedy routine blended with mind-reading and other unexpected twists, including an obvious audience plant who's part of the show and wears an "audience member" T-shirt. He frequently shows up to volunteer throughout the performance and pokes fun at accusations that magicians collude with people before their shows and then plant them in the audience to help them with their tricks later.

As Kilman noted, it's more about the comedy than the magic, but cruisers will receive plenty of both.

Virgin has a next-level tie-in with House of Yes, the famed Brooklyn art space and nightclub that draws crowds for its bizarre shows and themed costume events. The brand helped Virgin to conceptualize a new show, which is produced by Kaleidoscope Immersive.

To mesh with Resilient Lady's Greece itineraries, Virgin's entertainment executives worked with House of Yes and Kaleidoscope to create "Persephone," a dance showcase that also uses singing, aerialists, acrobats and pole dancers to tell the story of the goddess Persephone.

best cruise lines for entertainment

Persephone falls in love and runs away with Hades, the Greek god of the underworld. When her mother — Demeter, the Greek goddess of the harvest — discovers she's missing, she flies into a rage, and perpetual winter ensues, killing the crops.

Demons wearing horns and muzzles climb the walls, and dancers covered head to toe in mirrors pop and lock to a robotic-looking number that, in my completely unprofessional dance opinion, is the best on the entire ship.

best cruise lines for entertainment

Between dances, the singer who plays Demeter belts out popular songs with impressive vocal range, the cast members who play Persephone and Hades enter into a couple of amazing acrobatic routines, and a dance battle between the gods and goddesses lends a bit of competition to the whole experience.

The tale is a classic story most of us learned in grade school, but the level of energy, the intricate costumes and the fact that the audience feels like a part of the show are what make it a standout performance. Attendees stand the entire time, right up against the performance spaces, with cast members moving through the crowd at various intervals.

best cruise lines for entertainment

"The ability to have an event where people can stand and move around the space and be close to performers is a different experience in and of itself, but then you have all the recognizable music ... and we really went over the top production value-wise," Kilman said, referring to "Persephone" as the ship's big-spectacle show.

He also noted that it's the first time the versatile Red Room has been used to its full potential, offering three different vantage points for passengers — beside the stage, out on the floor's perimeter or one deck above on the second level, where seating is available.

To add to the intrigue, a Greek chorus of prerecorded actors appears on the stage's LED screens behind the cast. They rap about the situation to round out the plot line, even tossing out a couple of F-bombs. "F*cking teenagers," they say after Persephone makes her escape.

Festival Stage

best cruise lines for entertainment

Rather than a specific show, Festival Stage is a new Virgin Voyages concept that brings a rotating list of carefully selected talent on board to perform for a few weeks. The roster changes out to keep the entertainment fresh.

Kilman said he consistently heard from passengers who sailed the first two Virgin vessels that they wanted more comedy. The cruise line delivered.

"Now we have that element of rotating entertainment where, if you come back, there's something you're going to see that's new," Kilman said.

On my sailing, I saw:

Abandoman: Through audience participation, this Irish comedian turns cruisers' lives into hit songs through freestyle rap — right on the spot. During the hourlong show, he created several songs about a passenger who was sailing for her 80th birthday, a woman who held a grudge for decades because her mother wouldn't let her get braces and a couple arguing over whether or not to get a dog. In the end, he tied it all together flawlessly by rapping about another couple who, coincidentally, owns a pet shop.

best cruise lines for entertainment

Flute Loops: Through a combination of flute, guitar and beatbox, this talented Irish musician played well-known songs on select evenings. The music was light but caught passengers' attention because of the musician's ability to remix popular songs in ways that changed their tempo. This created a guessing game, eliciting "Oh, what is this one? It's on the tip of my tongue!" reactions from cruisers.

As for what's next, in a few weeks, Tape Face — an "America's Got Talent" finalist who does an entire comedy routine with his mouth taped shut — will join the repertoire of onboard entertainment. Additional comedy-magic hybrid shows and acapella singing group acts are also coming soon.

Returning favorites

Several favorite shows from Virgin's first two ships have returned to Resilient Lady. They include:

best cruise lines for entertainment

Miss Titty Kaka: Drag queen sensation and resident diva Miss Titty Kaka graces stages on all of Virgin's ships in a rotation. Replete with singing, dancing, fabulous costume changes and high kicks galore, her performances and witty sexual references will leave you equal parts amused and blushing. Plus, who doesn't love a good drag queen-hosted game of bingo?

best cruise lines for entertainment

Miss Behave: Land-based show "Miss Behave" was first brought to the high seas by Virgin Voyages on Valiant Lady. Led by a host dressed in a glittering gold outfit and a nerdy-looking assistant, it focuses on the idea that nothing really matters, including the points that the audience earns. Divided into two teams, attendees participate through singalongs, shout-outs and activities like standing up, sitting down, rushing the stage and texting selfies or answers to questions to a dedicated number via WhatsApp. It's all a bit chaotic, and that's just the way passengers like it.

best cruise lines for entertainment

Theme parties: One of Virgin Voyages' biggest strengths is the ability to throw incredible theme parties. Take Klub Rubiks and We Fancy, for example. The former is an '80s-themed dance party complete with a DJ spinning '80s music. Passengers are extremely zealous about dressing up. The latter is a nightclub dance party where members of the entertainment cast mingle with passengers on the dance floor. If you have anything gold, that's the time to wear it.

best cruise lines for entertainment

Scarlet Night: Absolutely no after-hours bash in the history of cruise ships can outdo Scarlet Night. The pinnacle of parties, it encourages everyone to dress in red to hear the legend of Scarlet Night. Told both in the ship's Roundabout atrium area — which is decorated with giant, inflatable octopus tentacles — by members of the crew and by a lounge singer-style performance that runs every 15 minutes in the Red Room theater, it involves a hapless sailor who falls in love with an octopus princess. Weird? Yes, but it's totally Virgin.

Cracking on with the bizarre series of Scarlet Night events, the crew in the atrium choose two passengers to "marry" one another after partaking in a live, improvised game of mad libs that describes how the two first met. Ultimately, the officiant pretend-marries everyone within earshot of the ceremony — but just for the night.

best cruise lines for entertainment

From there, members of the ship's dance crew begin popping up, flashmob style, to perform throughout the public areas as everyone makes their way to the pool deck, where the real party begins.

A giant inflatable octopus looms over the space, welcoming passengers as dancers invite everyone to jump into the pool. A DJ cranks music until midnight, when the festivities move indoors to The Manor, the ship's nightclub. In all my cruises, I have never seen a party so well attended or one that simultaneously uses so many public spaces so effectively.

Bottom line

best cruise lines for entertainment

Through stellar talent, high production value and big-name partnerships, Virgin Voyages' entertainment continues to push boundaries. Its new shows firmly cement the line's spot at the top of the cruise ship entertainment leaderboard. The cruise line has taken concepts that failed on other cruise lines, such as dinner theater and three-hour-long performances, and made them work exceptionally well.

What's great about the line is that it leans heavily into passenger feedback, tweaking some of its offerings to provide more variety and to retain all of the quirk, charm and innuendo in a less obvious (and, perhaps, less offensive) way. Plus, all but one of its brand-new shows are free.

What you can expect from the performances on any Virgin vessel — but especially Resilient Lady — are some of the most awe-inspiring singing, dancing and feats of strength you'll see anywhere, including on land.

Cruise Line Introduces 4 New Shows and Region-Specific Entertainment

Andrea Santillan

Andrea Santillan

  • April 14, 2024

Holland America Line (HAL) announced that it has strengthened its entertainment line-up with four new shows and unique programming specific to the region being visited.

The Rolling Stone Lounge, which hosts musical performances, has also been added to more cruise ships.

Interior of a cruise ship theater with red seats, a grand stage set, and an ornate red and white ceiling.

Cruisers who are fans of live musical performances have four new shows to choose from:

  • Song & Dance features songs from Hollywood and Broadway.
  • Class Act pays homage to iconic female performers in an elaborate Las Vegas-style production.
  • All That! is an interactive show that reimagines classic TV variety shows from the 60s to the 80s.
  • Hey, Mr. DJ is hosted by disc jockeys who play songs from the 60s and pop hits.

holland america eurodam seattle discovery park

You can watch all four productions on Holland America’s Eurodam. By the end of June, they will debut on Zuiderdam, Rotterdam, and Nieuw Statendam, with other ships to follow.

Region-specific programming: Steel drums, European tenors, and string music

Interior view of a modern theater with curved seating rows, a central stage, and deep blue lighting.

HAL also promises entertainment lineups that change according to guests’ sailing routes.

  • Available on Nieuw Statendam, Eurodam, and Rotterdam, Island Magic features orchestral steel drums that play traditional island sounds, pop songs, and remakes of classic hits.
  • Passengers aboard Zuiderdam and Volendam’s New England and Canada sailings get to experience Breton Thunder , a Nova Scotia-inspired performance that explores the region’s European roots.
  • European voyages onboard Zuiderdam, Nieuw Statendam, and Rotterdam will host the classical string music group Chordial Chamber Trio and the European tenors of Pantheon .
  • Finally, Alaskan exploration voyages continue to feature the choreography of Step One Dance Company , the musical harmonies of Major Fourth , and popular Alaskan attractions through Destination: Alaska .

Music venue Rolling Stone Lounge now on Nieuw Amsterdam and Eurodam

Empty jazz club with musical instruments set up on stage, surrounded by tables and chairs illuminated by candlelight.

The Rolling Stone Lounge and its 7-piece band were previously only available on Westerdam, Zuiderdam, Oosterdam, and Noordam. Last December, however, Nieuw Amsterdam and Eurodam also welcomed the popular music venue aboard.

With the cruise line’s longer 9- to 14-day itineraries from 2025 to 2026, cruisers will have more time to enjoy Holland America’s diverse entertainment options.

Cruise Lines With the Best Food

Holland America Line's Tamarind restaurant offers delicious Pan-Asian cuisine.

Taking a cruise vacation transports you to coveted destinations in places around the world. For many people, though, it's all about the culinary experience, especially for those who return time and again to dine at their favorite onboard venues – many of which rival the best restaurants you'll find on land. While most cruise lines still offer all-you-can-eat buffet-style venues, some also feature next-level culinary experiences with world-renowned chefs at the helm, menus curated by Michelin-starred chefs, and immersive food and beverage programs.

If you're a foodie looking for the cruise lines with the best food, U.S. News has compiled this list of cruise lines focused on delivering an extraordinary dining experience, based on expert opinion and reviews. We've also highlighted two of the venues on each line that receive accolades for outstanding food and service.

Oceania Cruises

Oceania Cruises' culinary program has long been regarded as one of the best of any cruise line – and the company has even trademarked the term "The Finest Cuisine at Sea." Jacques Pépin, the renowned French master chef, has been the executive culinary director since 2003; he has inspired the menus and cuisine on board the line's seven small luxury ships since that time, including the newest vessel, Vista . Oceania is also committed to sourcing the best ingredients from destinations around the world. In addition, the line has a high ratio of culinary staff to guests, and the ship's galleys are outfitted with equipment you'd typically see in Michelin-starred restaurants.

Guests can book exclusive Culinary Discovery Tours on two of the ships, Marina and Riviera . Hone your culinary skills or learn to prepare new types of cuisine at The Culinary Center, found on Marina, Riviera and Vista. You'll also find special wine-tasting and Champagne events in partnership with La Reserve by Wine Spectator. In addition, the line has just announced its first Culinary Masters' Cruise featuring Oceania's two French master chefs aboard Marina in October 2024.

Most of the dining venues are complimentary on Oceania Cruises (except for Privée and La Reserve), and options run the gamut from French and Asian cuisine to Italian fare and steakhouse specialties. There are also new culinary concepts on board Vista – including Ember, which features American classics, as well as Aquamar Kitchen, a venue focused on healthy Mediterranean-inspired cuisine.

Here are two of Oceania's best restaurants:

  • Red Ginger: Red Ginger's colorful red and gold interiors, designed with feng shui in mind, draw guests in when they enter the restaurant, but it's the bold Asian flavors that keep them coming back for more. With Vietnamese, Thai and Japanese specialties to choose from, diners will enjoy selections such as caramelized tiger prawns, crispy ginger calamari, red and green curries, and bulgogi rib-eye steak. Red Ginger is available on Marina, Riviera, Sirena and Vista.
  • Toscana: The hearty cuisine inspired by Tuscan and northern Italian flavors at Toscana is served on Versace china that's custom designed for the restaurant. Diners should come with an appetite to enjoy several courses before the main event, including a hot or cold antipasti or soup, a selection of pastas, and a classic version of Caesar salad prepared tableside. Traditional main dish favorites include osso buco alla Milanese, veal scaloppini, lobster fra diavolo and Dover sole. Toscana is available on Regatta, Insignia, Nautica, Marina, Riviera and Vista.

Silversea is another cruise line known for its culinary excellence. Guests will find a selection of international venues featuring Italian, Asian and French cuisine on board the line's fleet of 12 ships.

S.A.L.T., an immersive dining experience that stands for "Sea and Land Taste," is available on Silver Nova , Silver Moon and Silver Dawn . The S.A.L.T. program was created by Adam Sachs, former editor-in-chief of Saveur magazine and three-time James Beard journalism award winner. The innovative program invites guests to experience the destination and local food culture through on-board hands-on activities, including making local recipes in the S.A.L.T. Lab. You can also attend cooking demonstrations and lectures, or book in-depth culinary excursions to working organic farms, Sicilian pasticcerias (where you'll learn how to make pastries) and vineyards in destinations around the world.

The all-inclusive luxury line's restaurant venues are complimentary with the following exceptions: French fine dining restaurant La Dame; the S.A.L.T. Chef's Table experience available on Silver Nova; Seishin Restaurant, which serves Asian fusion dishes on Silver Spirit; and Kaiseki, the Japanese, sushi and teppanyaki venue available on five Silversea ships.

These are two standout dining venues on Silversea:

  • S.A.L.T. Kitchen: S.A.L.T. Kitchen's menu changes daily inspired by the destination, but diners will also find a "Voyage" menu that reflects the influences from the overall region of the itinerary. The daily "Terrain" menu in Italy might include dishes likes prawns cooked in a cherry tomato sauce with garlic, white wine and parsley or a classic risotto with clams topped with a pan-fried filet of sole. The "Voyage" menu on an Eastern Mediterranean sailing would feature dishes from Greece, Croatia and Italy. The immersive dining experience is available on Silver Ray, Moon, Dawn and Nova.
  • La Dame: The curated menu at La Dame was created by Silversea's top chefs and is served in an elegant contemporary space with white-glove table service. The cuisine pays homage to classic French gastronomy along with modern techniques and flair. Guests can expect to dine on traditional French dishes such as seared duck foie gras, French onion soup, lobster bisque, Dover sole and souffles for dessert. La Dame is available on all the line's ships, except for Silver Origin.

Explora Journeys

MSC Group's new luxury brand, Explora Journeys, features a top-notch culinary program with a team of international chefs at the helm. Acclaimed chef Franck Garanger, the line's head of culinary, has been recognized as a French master chef since 2008; he has also overseen the culinary programs for both Silversea and Oceania cruises before joining Explora.

According to Garanger, Explora Journeys has one of the highest chef-to-guest ratios and food costs of any cruise line, which is why you'll see offerings like freshly shucked oysters on the half shell, ceviche, free range and organic chicken, made-to-order grilled fish, and other freshly prepared items in Emporium Marketplace, Explora's globally inspired all-day dining venue. There's also a large focus on plant-based dishes, wellness and healthy menu selections in venues across the ship.

The first of six 922-guest superyacht-style vessels, Explora I, offers guests a choice of six restaurant venues, including the French-inspired Fil Rouge; Marble & Co. Grill, an elegant European steakhouse; and Med Yacht Club, which features delightful Mediterranean cuisine. Guests will also enjoy boutique international and regional wines; try a glass of Moët & Chandon, Explora's "house" Champagne.

During your "journey," you can also attend cooking classes at the Chef's Kitchen, a private dining and culinary school with lead enrichment chef Jean-Louis Dumonet at the helm. Another world-class chef, Dumonet received the distinction of becoming a French master chef in 1994 and has had a very successful culinary career, including achieving his first Michelin star at age 28.

Explore these standouts in Explora's culinary program:

  • Sakura: This beautiful Pan-Asian restaurant is open for lunch and dinner. The bright and airy design features cherry blossoms suspended from the ceilings and Asian-inspired decor. The authentic dining experience also boasts an open kitchen and a sushi bar with many ingredients sourced from Japan, and the venue has outdoor seating and indoor tables with floor-to-ceiling ocean views. Begin your evening with an Asian-inspired cocktail and a starter of crispy duck leg confit, wagyu beef tataki or soft-shell crab tempura. Main dish highlights include a miso black cod fillet, 72-hour slow-cooked short rib beef panang and an addictive lobster pad Thai.
  • Anthology: The innovative concept at Anthology "is imagined as a unique culinary stage showcasing global cooking talents and cuisines, provenance and rare ingredients along with wines by highly coveted winemakers." The tasting menus are curated by a rotation of top chefs that changes throughout the year. The first chef who opened the new ship, Mauro Uliassi, has a three-Michelin-starred restaurant in the coastal town of Senigallia, Italy. The second chef (through April 2024) is Swedish-born Emma Bengtsson, executive chef at the two-Michelin-starred Aquavit in New York. Anthology is the only dining venue on Explora I that comes at an additional cost. There's also an optional wine pairing.

Regent Seven Seas

Regent Seven Seas' culinary program, "Epicurean Indulgence," features top-notch dining experiences on board the luxury line's six ships. Guests will also find educational hands-on cooking classes in the Culinary Arts Kitchen and Epicurean Explorer tours focused on the wines, spirits and regional foods in destinations around the world. Regents' all-inclusive cruise fares include as many as seven dining venues (depending on the ship), that feature French, Italian, Pan-Asian and steakhouse restaurants as well as 24-hour in-suite room service. You can also enjoy fine wines and spirits in all the restaurants, bar and lounges.

Regent Seven Seas boasts a variety of excellent restaurants, but here are two top options:

  • Pacific Rim: The entrance to Pacific Rim is just as impressive as its food with the floor-to-ceiling bronze Tibetan Buddhist prayer wheel that sits just outside the venue. Inside, your evening experience in this beautiful zen-like space begins with a signature cocktail and a difficult decision of which Thai, Japanese, Korean, Chinese or Vietnamese dishes to order for dinner. Begin your meal with a selection of sushi and sashimi, then sample pork and shrimp siu mai or thom kha gai soup. For a main dish, don't miss elevated dishes like miso black cod, Canadian lobster tempura or aromatic duck.
  • Compass Rose: Compass Rose is the largest specialty restaurant on Regent's ships, and you'll find the elegant venue across the fleet. The menu features classic favorites and dishes that are always available, including foie gras, escargot, Alaskan crab salad, black Angus cuts of beef, New Zealand lamb chops and a daily choice of pasta. The additional chef's gourmet menu changes daily. If you prefer lighter fare, choose one of the healthy Serene Spa & Wellness selections. Guests can also customize their dining preferences and order from any of the menus.

Manfredi's Restaurant onboard the Viking Octantis ship.

Courtesy of Viking

Viking's nine 930-guest and adults-only ocean-going ships offer destination-focused dining highlighting regional cuisine and local specialties. In addition, cruisers will find their favorite classic dishes (some with a twist), such as a Norwegian baby shrimp cocktail, beef tenderloin and linguine with clams in The Restaurant, Viking's main dining venue.

Other dining options include an open kitchen and international fare at World Café, which also has a large alfresco dining area called Aquavit Terrace. For more casual fare, head to Mamsen's, a favorite spot for Norwegian specialties, or stop by the Pool Grill, where you'll find made-to-order burgers and light bites. All of these venues – plus two specialty restaurants, Manfredi's and The Chef's Table – are included in the cruise fare.

Guests on board Viking's ships are also treated to a daily afternoon tea in the Wintergarden, a Scandinavian-inspired, light-filled space located next to the main pool. If you're interested in learning more about destination-focused cuisine, reserve a spot in one of the hands-on cooking classes at The Kitchen Table to learn how to prepare some of the local dishes. These special excursions and culinary classes begin with a visit to a local market and end with an evening of cooking (or watching the dinner preparation) – plus multiple courses of food and wine pairings. There is a fee for the class.

The two specialty restaurants provide an exceptional experience with Viking :

  • Manfredi's: Plan to make a reservation at Manfredi's, Viking's Italian restaurant. It features an impressive menu of Italian specialties, including dishes with influence from Tuscany and Rome. Start the evening with a selection of antipasti for two and pasta e fagioli or crème of porcini soup. Then, choose between traditional offerings like osso bucco alla Milanese, rosemary parmesan-crusted lamb or the Tuscan favorite dish bistecca Fiorentina (Florentine-style steak). There are also wonderful fresh pasta dishes and several types of risotto.
  • The Chef's Table: The Chef's Table menu changes several times throughout the cruise, allowing guests to sample a variety of multicourse tasting menus that highlight international and regional specialties. The beautiful venue is perfect for a special evening and a "food journey" where you'll savor a selection of Asian, Norwegian, French or other cuisines paired with wines by the ship's master sommelier.

Holland America Line

Surf n' Terf at the Pinnacle Grill on a Holland America Line ship.

Holland America's master chef and creative culinary artist, Rudi Sodamin, has been with the line for around 20 years. He also heads up the Culinary Council, a group of well-known chefs who will be on board for culinary cruises scheduled throughout the year. During these special voyages, guests can attend cooking demonstrations and coffee chats and make reservations for exclusive chef-hosted dinners and events throughout the cruise.

Holland America also has a new initiative with Fresh Fish Ambassador, chef and TV personality Masaharu Morimoto (you'll recognize him from "Iron Chef"). The Global Fresh Fish program affords the line the ability to source more than 80 varieties of fresh fish in destinations around the world. In addition, you'll find certified sustainable Alaskan seafood on the menu during Alaska cruises .

Wine aficionados can look for wine tastings and wine blending sessions on board the ship and excursions to wine regions ashore, some in partnership with Food & Wine magazine. Rudi's Sel De Mer is an excellent choice for a fine dining evening, but the French brasserie-inspired venue is only available on three ships.

Here are two of Holland America's top specialty restaurants:

  • Pinnacle Grill: Pinnacle Grill, an upscale steakhouse, is a specialty restaurant (with an additional fee) that's available on all of the line's 11 ships. It's a favorite spot for couples to enjoy a romantic evening and features classic dishes like shrimp cocktail, jumbo lump crab cakes, lobster bisque, filet mignon, surf and turf, and grilled lamb chops. Seafood lovers will also find Alaskan king salmon and halibut. Be sure to save room for a twist on a timeless dessert – the not-so-classic baked Alaska with Ben & Jerry's Cherry Garcia ice cream.
  • Tamarind: Tamarind's elegant atmosphere and flavorful Pan-Asian cuisine make this another top pick for Holland American cruisers. The specialty restaurant is available on four ships (for an additional fee) and features dishes from Thailand, Japan, Indonesia and other Asian countries. Appetizers include specialties like crispy duck with a steamed bao bun, shrimp tempura and Chinese five-spice baby back ribs. For the main course, choose from several types of curries, sample Mongolian barbecue lamb chops, or feast on wok-seared shrimp and lobster. Plan to come early to Tamarind Bar to enjoy a cocktail such as a saketini while watching the sunset over the ocean.

Disney Cruise Line

Arendelle: A Frozen Dining Adventure on a Disney Cruise Line ship.

Mark Ashman | Courtesy of Disney Cruise Line

Disney Cruise Line offers excellent family-friendly dining options with over-the-top Disney- and movie-themed venues with live character performances and shows. The ships also have upscale adults-only lounges, bars and restaurants that are perfect for a romantic date night. Disney Cruise Line 's unique rotational family dining concept allows guests to experience three different restaurants while having the same dedicated servers every one of those evenings, so the service is personalized throughout your voyage.

Guests on board Disney Wish can dine in the fictional kingdom of Arendelle at Arendelle: A Frozen Dining Adventure. The "Frozen"-themed evening includes Nordic-inspired dishes, musical performances by the characters and even singalongs for the audience. On Disney Wonder , guests are treated to a night filled with New Orleans-style jazz and street parties plus Southern-influenced fare at Tiana's Place. You can also meet Princess Tiana from Disney's animated feature "The Princess and the Frog."

Other top dining venues on Disney Cruise Line include:

Palo: This adults-only Venetian-inspired venue is an upscale spot ideal for a quiet evening without the kids (who will be very happy to spend time at the onboard kids club). The fine dining experience features northern Italian cuisine and floor-to-ceiling windows offering views from nearly every perspective. The specialty restaurant also serves brunch on longer cruises. The prix fixe (or "prezzo fisso") menu includes four courses, or you can opt to choose from the regular menu with a selection of appetizers, salads, pizza, pasta and main dishes that are individually priced. Guests will find Palo on Disney Magic, Wonder, Dream and Fantasy.

On Disney Wish, there's an updated version of the dining concept, Palo Steakhouse. The modern steakhouse and Italian restaurant – inspired by Cogsworth, the enchanted clock from "Beauty and the Beast" – offers cuts of Australian wagyu, Japanese Kobe and Miyazaki beef as well as delightful Italian cuisine and spectacular ocean views. Be sure to splurge on a cocktail at The Rose before dinner if you're dining at Palo Steakhouse. Note that meals at Palo and Palo Steakhouse come with an additional charge.

Remy: The exquisite dining experience at Remy is a collaboration between French chef Arnaud Lallement from l'Assiette Champenoise (a three-Michelin-starred restaurant in France) and Walt Disney World Resort 's chef Scott Hunnel from the renowned restaurant Victoria & Albert's. Your leisurely evening of fine wines and a tasting menu of French fare begins with a signature Taittinger Champagne cocktail prepared tableside.

Special touches in the "Ratatouille"-inspired venue include Frette linens, Christofle silverware, exclusive Bernadaud china made for Remy, Riedel glassware, tableside international cheese service and decanting stations for wines. A Champagne brunch is served on sea days and select port days. There is an additional charge to dine at the restaurant, which is available on Disney Dream and Fantasy.

Virgin Voyages

Virgin Voyages' creative approach to cruising can be found in nearly every aspect of the line's three ships, including its adults-only vibe and fresh approach to dining. Virgin Voyages does not have a traditional main dining room – and there's no onboard buffet or large dining halls. What you will find is more than 20 eateries with menus created by Michelin-starred chefs that are included in the cruise fare. These smaller and more intimate venues include The Galley, a food court-style spot for casual and grab-and-go fare like bento boxes, tacos, salads, sushi, burgers, noodle bowls and desserts.

Meat lovers and vegetarians will love the veggie-forward dishes and indulgent pork or chicken specialties at boldly designed Razzle Dazzle. At Extra Virgin, sample trattoria-style Italian fare like crispy artichokes, seafood pasta, grilled Mediterranean sea bass and a special tableside preparation of affogato for dessert. For a Korean barbecue experience, head over to Gunbae, a fun spot where your evening begins with a shot of soju – Korea's national drink and the best-selling liquor in the world. The Wake is the largest venue on board and the closest restaurant to a main dining room; it sits at the back of the ship and features a raw bar in addition to a selection of steaks and seafood (some offerings come with an upcharge).

There are many excellent options for dinner, but these are two cruiser-favorite venues:

  • The Test Kitchen: Inspired by Auguste Escoffier's "Ma Cuisine," The Test Kitchen is a favorite spot for its laboratory-like eatery and cooking school. The interior decor features metal furniture, beakers and test tubes to get diners in the mood for the exploratory culinary evening. Menus at this innovative venue are presented as a list of ingredients, and guests get to watch the chef combine the selected ingredients of the day for the six-course tasting menu. The upscale experience takes about 2.5 hours. Wine, beer or cocktail pairings come at an additional fee.
  • Pink Agave: Virgin's stylish Mexican dining venue, Pink Agave, was inspired by the vibrant streets of Mexico City – and the restaurant features what the line calls the most extensive selection of mezcal and tequila at sea. The menu offerings include small, medium and large plates plus desserts. To begin the evening, order a few small bites to share, including esquites (a grilled corn dish) and aguachile, which is a ceviche made with raw tuna, avocado and jicama. Then, for the main course, choose between options like roasted duck or chicken, achiote marinated pork, or a vegetarian stuffed poblano pepper.

Celebrity Cruises

A waiter placing food on a 3D dining table at Le Petit Chef onboard a Celebrity Cruises ship.

Courtesy of Celebrity Cruises

Celebrity's selection and quality of restaurant venues – and attentive service – have made the line a favorite for food-focused cruisers for many years. If you're sailing on one of the Celebrity Edge-class ships ( Ascent , Beyond , Apex or Edge ), you'll have up to 32 restaurants to choose from with globally inspired menus created by Michelin-starred chef Cornelius Gallagher.

You can also look for special culinary cruises and onboard events designed in partnership with renowned Michelin-star French chef Daniel Boulud, the line's global culinary brand ambassador. Some of the onboard programs include wine-blending classes, whiskey and scotch tastings, mixology classes, and food and wine pairing workshops.

With so many complimentary dining and specialty options on Celebrity ships (making it hard to choose where to dine), here are two of the unique experiences not to be missed:

  • Le Voyage by Daniel Boulud: Daniel Boulud's first signature restaurant at sea is inspired by the chef's global travels. The interior of the specialty restaurant, designed by the Parisian architect-design team of Jouin Manku, is as much of an experience as the meal with its intimate decor and banquette seating. Guests can choose between a standard dinner menu, a regular five-course tasting menu or a plant-based tasting menu. Le Voyage is available on the new Celebrity Ascent and Celebrity Beyond and costs an additional fee.
  • Le Petit Chef: The innovative and fantastical 3D dining experience at Le Petit Chef is one of the most unique ways to spend an evening at sea. The immersive meal, which is either served in the quirky Qsine restaurant or Le Grand Bistro, depending on the ship, will delight cruisers of all ages, especially younger children. The tiny, animated chef (think about the size of your hand) entertains guests while preparing each dish. You may see him firing up a grill to sear a steak, picking fresh vegetables from a garden or even going on a fishing adventure in search of lobster. After each dish is prepared by "the chef," waiters will arrive with the actual dish. The 1.5-hour-long experience is an additional cost.

The Best New Cruise Ships of 2023

Travel + Leisure’s 2024 It List.

Elizabeth Rhodes/Travel + Leisure

For the first time, we’re spotlighting new cruise ships on Travel + Leisure ’s It List, as these exceptional vessels become more and more like floating resorts — celebrity chefs, crystal chandeliers, and Rolex boutiques included.

Explora Journeys’ Explora I

Paul Brady/Travel + Leisure

It’s not every day a new cruise line arrives. The debut of the remarkable Explora I was a moment years in the making for Explora Journeys , the upstart luxury operator that aims to bring a European sensibility to the world of vacations at sea. So far, the project is a smashing success, thanks to the ship’s low-key vibe, standout food and beverage, and intriguing itineraries that visit in-demand ports in Northern Europe, the Mediterranean, and the Caribbean. My own August 2023 trip on Explora I , from Copenhagen to Hamburg, Germany, included fulfilling visits to places such as Oslo and the town of Stavanger, Norway, a gateway to adventurous hiking with a postcard-perfect Old Town. The ship itself was also a destination, with its abundance of outdoor space — including an alfresco fitness center — and pools at seemingly every turn. The 461 suites, all of them with balconies, are filled with luxurious touches such as Frette linens and robes, heated marble floors, and Dyson hair dryers. But Explora I truly shines when it comes to food: During the week I was aboard, it was impossible to find a bad meal — and I was often astonished at the quality of, in particular, the pasta served in the Emporium Marketplace and the sushi on offer at Sakura, two of the nine restaurants aboard. The most ambitious of them all is Anthology, a rotating-chef concept that has seen a residency from seafood whiz Mario Ulaissi, known for his Michelin three-starred restaurant on Italy's Adriatic coast, and that recently welcomed Emma Bengtsson, from Aquavit , in New York City. Much has been made of Explora I ’s Rolex boutique — the first on any cruise ship — but for my money, the other shops on board were more interesting: The company has tapped family-owned businesses around the world to create capsule collections of resort wear, handbags, fragrances, sunglasses, and beautiful gifts that can’t be found elsewhere. From $2,050 per person for a six-day sailing. Accessible ship. — Paul Brady

Oceania Cruises’ Vista

Nick Tortajada/Courtesy of Oceania Cruises

The new Oceania Vista is in a class of its own; no really, it’s the first in Oceania Cruises ’ new Allura class. Of its 11 bars and restaurants, three are entirely new to the Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings–owned brand — including a high-end cocktail spot called Founders’ Bar, serving 26 intricate drinks that use house-made syrups and top-shelf booze like Whistle Pig and parsley-infused Grey Goose. As Oceania levels up, the cruise line has produced a ship that feels more like a floating resort than the vessels that came before. There’s pickleball; a health-conscious restaurant, Aquamar, serving made-to-order salads and pressed juices; and a coffee shop that looks like one in walking distance of my home in L.A. (marble counters, gold accents, leather bar stools) and pulls an espresso shot of similar quality. Vista has more suites than others in the Oceania fleet, too: There are 14 Oceania Suites (up to 1,200 square feet); eight Vista Suites (up to 1,850 square feet); and three Owner’s Suites with Ralph Lauren Home decor and two massive terraces (2,400 square feet). But the most hotel-like touch? A celebrity chef–driven restaurant, Toscana, where Giada De Laurentiis — the ship’s godmother — supplied two recipes for the menu. As someone who watched a lot of Everyday Italian in the early aughts, I was particularly excited to try her signature, Capri-inspired lemon spaghetti, and lemon-cream sauce with grilled shrimp and capers didn’t disappoint. From $2,499 per person for a seven-night sailing. Accessible ship. — Maya Kachroo-Levine

Regent Seven Seas Cruises’ Seven Seas Grandeur

Courtesy of Regent Seven Seas Cruises

Regent Seven Seas Cruises’ sixth ship, the Seven Seas Grandeur , sailed its inaugural season in December, joining sibling ships Seven Seas Explorer and Seven Seas Splendor as the newest member of the luxury fleet. The cruise line is a favorite among T+L readers for its gorgeous ships and all-inclusive pricing that covers unlimited shore excursions, dining at specialty restaurants, and even round-trip airfare. Grandeur lives up to its name thanks to stunning, art-filled spaces designed by cruise ship interior experts Studio Dado: signature restaurant Compass Rose is enchanting with interiors inspired by a fairy-tale forest; the Observation Lounge sparkles with an undulating chandelier and swanky bar; and the $11,000-per-night Regent Suite has a private en suite spa and custom Treesse mini pool. As I boarded Grandeur for the ship’s inaugural sailing, I was mesmerized by the grand staircase and glittering chandelier. And with a maximum capacity of 744 guests, I found it easy to take time to myself in the myriad of quiet spots tucked throughout the ship, whether in the Serene Spa and Wellness area, in the Library, or on the Sports Deck overlooking the ocean. Seven restaurants include specialty steakhouse Prime 7, pan-Asian restaurant Pacific Rim, and breakfast and lunch buffet La Veranda, which refines the cruise buffet experience with daily specials like paella and sushi. Several bars and lounges, a pool and hot tubs, a casino, Broadway-style productions, and cooking classes at the Culinary Arts Kitchen make the ship a destination in itself, though guests will want to take advantage of those included excursions on Caribbean, Central American, North American, and European itineraries, ranging from seven to 16 nights, during the ship’s 2024 season. From $4,669 per person for a seven-night sailing. Accessible ship. — Elizabeth Rhodes

Silversea’s Silver Nova

Courtesy of Silversea Cruises

Carrying 728 passengers, Silver Nova is big for the luxury sector, but boasts a hugely important metric: a capacious passenger space ratio — that is, the number of guests relative to the size of the ship. Simply put, this ship offers more elbow room per passenger than almost any other cruise vessel. Silver Nova is wrapped in glass, with an asymmetrical layout; the funnel is positioned off-center, so is the pool, offering an expansive, uncluttered pool deck. Many features of the brand-new ship recall previous Silversea successes, my favorite of which is the S.A.L.T. (Sea And Land Taste) program, expanded for Silver Nova . S.A.L.T. perks include a gorgeous, sea-facing lab for hands-on culinary lessons (at no additional cost), plus a new concept, the Chef’s Table, where an 11-course menu is prepared for just 24 diners. All facets of the S.A.L.T. ecosystem, including ingredients, a bar, lectures, and shore excursions, are keyed to the region Nova is sailing. While food is a drawing card for Silver Nova , accommodations also received a revamp. Tied to the theme of bringing the outside in, there are brilliant new suites found in the aft starboard corner of the ship, with wraparound balconies revealing a 270-degree view.  This is where you can tuck me in when I win the lottery and head off on a world cruise. But until then, Silver Nova will summer in Alaska and spend northern hemisphere winters in Australia and New Zealand, places where top-deck views should prove ceaselessly rewarding. From $3,250 per person for a seven-night sailing. Accessible ship. — David Swanson

Disney Cruise Line

No one will be surprised that entertainment juggernaut Disney offers an amazing family cruise experience.

Disney Cruise Line ships are known for meet-and-greets with Mickey Mouse and Disney princesses, interactive movie-themed dining experiences and enormous kids clubs and play areas.

What might surprise the uninitiated is how good the line is at taking care of the whole family, not just the Mouse-obsessed little ones.

Disney thinks of all the little things that can help parents have a stress-free trip with kids in tow. From split bathrooms (allowing one family member to take a bath while another uses the toilet) to waiters who will cut up your child’s food, Disney Cruise Line takes the pressure off parents.

While other cruise lines limit water play to kids who are toilet trained and drop-off child care to ages 3 and up, Disney caters to all kids with onboard splash areas and nurseries.

It also offers adults-only pool decks and restaurants, a nightlife scene and couples spa treatments to revive exhausted parents who haven’t had a date in months.

Teens might roll their eyes at the ever-present Mickeys, but Disney Cruise Line does not ignore its older kid guests. Tweens and teens get their own cool hangouts, Edge and Vibe, with video games, foosball and hip seating areas.

Additionally, first-run movies and Broadway-caliber musicals, waterslides, teen spa treatments and grab-and-go food options (and free room service) keep older kids busy and happy.

The new Disney Wish features a sports area for free play and competitions attractive to this age group.

Royal Caribbean

With some of the biggest ships at sea and an amusement park-like private island in the Bahamas, Royal Caribbean is one of the best cruise lines for active families.

Want to try surfing, sky diving, rock climbing, laser tag, go-karts or zip lining? Families don’t have to leave the ship to get their adrenaline highs.

Even the sedentary pursuits are high-octane on Royal Caribbean. Broadway musicals, festive parades, water acrobatic performances and ice skating shows wow the crowds on sea days.

Expansive play spaces for kids include separate clubs for teens and tweens, plus drop-off nurseries for babies.

Parents can sneak off to the adults-only solarium or thermal suite while the kids live it up at cruise camp.

After a hard day of play, worn-out families can refuel at a variety of restaurants, including burger and milkshake mecca Johnny Rockets, Italian and Mexican eateries and an all-day buffet.

Family cabins and connecting staterooms give larger families their needed space. The Ultimate Family Suite on Royal Caribbean’s Symphony of the Seas, Spectrum of the Seas and Wonder of the Seas can sleep eight, but parents and kids alike might be tempted to stay up late playing air hockey, scrambling up the climbing wall, soaking in the private outdoor hot tub or watching the giant TV.

When Icon of the Seas debuts in 2024, the new megaship will offer an entire section of the ship devoted to family-friendly accommodations and an outdoor dining-and-play space targeted at parents with young children.

Carnival Cruise Line

Practicalities first: Carnival Cruise Line is an affordable and convenient cruise line for families who don’t live the jet-set lifestyle. With home ports all around the U.S., Carnival puts its ships within driving distance of many Americans.

A variety of short-cruise destinations, affordable-yet-spacious inside cabins (they can sleep four) and lots of onboard attractions and restaurants included in the fares combine to make it one of the best-value cruise lines afloat.

Carnival doesn’t dub its fleet the Fun Ships for nothing. The whole family will have a blast on board, whether you like getting down to live music, busting a gut at family-friendly comedy shows, getting soaked at an onboard water park or eating green eggs and ham with Dr. Seuss characters.

The cruise line also embraces simple pleasures like free-flowing soft-serve ice cream and pizza and a day spent lounging by the pool.

Families don’t need to pull out their wallets to feed ravenous teens or sugar-fueled children. Guy Fieri burgers and barbecue, burritos for breakfast and lunch and Shaquille O’Neal’s fried chicken are all included in your cruise fares. No one’s going to make you dress up for dinner, either.

Carnival ships have plenty of cabins that can sleep four or five passengers, but its newest ships truly treat families right. Book a Family Harbor suite or stateroom and get access to a family lounge stocked with all the essentials — snacks and coffee, games, Wi-Fi, movies and a concierge to make bookings so mom and dad can spend more time playing with the kids.

MSC Cruises

The underdog on our list, MSC Cruises might not be a household name yet, but any cruise line that has a partnership with Lego should be on every family’s radar.

As the Mediterranean line grows its U.S.-based fleet, it is staying attuned to the needs of traveling families.

Case in point: Larger family groups don’t have to cram into one cabin or be scattered across the ship. Instead, they can select from a variety of connecting cabins that can accommodate up to 10 people.

Families keen on rooming together can take advantage of frequent “kids sail free” fares and pay only the taxes and fees for children under 18 who are the third and fourth passengers in a cabin.

Speaking of kids clubs, MSC’s ships offer play spaces for babies, kids, tweens and teens. Its ships not only offer a drop-off Baby Club with educational toys by Chicco but also a special baby laundry service to take care of that pile of dirty onesies.

Kids club activities go beyond arts and crafts and video games to include cooking events, sports competitions and hi-tech interactive games. Teens can sing karaoke, dance at the onboard disco and attend themed parties with their new friends.

Outside of the kids club, families can race in a Formula One simulator, experience virtual reality, get soaked in a water park or brave their fear of heights on a suspension bridge.

One of the line’s newest ships, MSC Seascape, features Robotron, a three-seat robotic amusement ride that’s a hit with thrill-seeking families.

Norwegian Cruise Line

Norwegian Cruise Line is all about giving cruisers options to create different versions of the perfect cruise vacation, all within the same ship.

The flexibility and choice make it one of the best cruise lines for families, especially those who need to satisfy diverse interests or get bored with the same activities day after day.

Kids clubs and adults-only sun decks allow for age-appropriate fun time apart, but Norwegian wants families to have fun together. Teaming up for laser tag, mastering a ropes course, singing along to a Broadway musical or live concert or screaming down a waterslide are guaranteed to create those unbreakable family bonds.

Norwegian’s flexible dining system and a plethora of onboard eateries let families plan meals to suit their schedules and tastes.

Also, free kids meals at extra-charge restaurants mean parents can sample Brazilian, Japanese, French or seafood dishes while the littles gobble up pasta and chicken fingers. Casual all-day options suit fussy eaters who need unfussy dining areas.

The cruise line also gets a shoutout for its family-friendly Hawaii itineraries. The only big-ship cruise line that sails weeklong itineraries round trip from Honolulu, Norwegian provides an easy way for families to visit multiple islands.

Beach time, boat rides, water sports, luaus and volcano tours combine for an epic family trip, with the ship taking the stress out of meals and transportation.

Bottom line

Families can have a great time on any cruise line, hanging out by the pool, visiting exciting new destinations and simply spending time together. But if you’re looking for a ship that really caters to kids and their adult companions, you’ll want to book a vacation on one of these five best cruise lines for families.
