Lagos is not just a beautiful and chaotic city for me; it’s also a place I call my second home and being a British Nigerian is very much part of my identity. Lagos is a testament to the industrious spirit of the nation, offering a unique taste of its vibrant culture. Our energy as people is truly unmatched. How To Stay Connected While in Lagos, Nigeria

Whether you’re using taxis and Uber or exploring Lagos, you’ll want to make sure you stay connected to the internet while you move around. Ajo makes it easier to do this with their e-SIM technology which gives you a digital SIM card that allows you to enjoy seamless data connection without the need for a physical SIM card or worrying about roaming fees across the African continent. Using Ajo is simple to install on your phone and you can get 5% off your data bundle using my code TRAVELWITHJOYCE. You can get started and give it a try with 1 GB of data.

It’s a great and reliable solution for people who are not in Lagos for a long time and are just there for Detty December or Easter. It’s a new technology travellers like me are using which is super convenient. I remember the last time I was in Nigeria, getting a physical SIM card was a bit of a hassle, involving passport registration and was truly a tedious process. Ajo helps you avoid high roaming charges, and stay connected for security, and the best part is you can add, remove, or change networks & data plans instantly. The great thing about Ajo is that you can purchase your e-SIM beforehand. That way when you land at Murtala  Muhammed  International  Airport (MMIA), having the internet sorted is one less thing to worry about. I also know how much of a pain it is to connect the wifi at the airport.

How Ajo Works:

  • Choose your destination (Ghana or Nigeria) and package. Using my discount code TRAVELWITHJOYCE for money off.
  • Install your sim using a QR code.
  • Activate your sim to stay connected, create new memories & enjoy Nigeria.

What devices are compatible with Ajo’s eSIM?

For iPhone lovers, from iPhone 11 and up, you’re in luck. Android enthusiasts, including Samsung, Google, Huawei, and more, are also covered. Just make sure your phone is unlocked! Even Windows 10 laptops like Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, Lenovo, and Surface devices are eSIM compatible.

Top Things To Do In Lagos

Visit west africa’s biggest art gallery, nike art’s centre.

Start your morning exploring Nike Arts Centre, West Africa’s largest art gallery. There’s a collection of about 8,000 stunning artworks and a must-visit when in Lekki, Lagos. It’s free to enter and opens 10 am – 6 pm on Monday to Saturday and 1 pm – 6 pm on Sundays. You are not allowed to take direct photography on the artworks but you can take   pictures and videos of yourself with your phone in the gallery. I had the pleasure of meeting Nike Davies-Okundaye, the owner of Nike Art Centre and she’s one of the sweetest people you’ll ever meet. If you want to make the most of the day and save time waiting for other travellers, enjoy the personalised service of a guided private tour.

Just a few minutes’ drive from Nike Arts Centre you can go on a shopping spree in Lekki Arts & Crafts Market to shop for some authentic art, handmade bags, sculptures and more. It is a great place to visit to shop for local artisan goods which make lovely souvenirs too. The prices are quite reasonable but don’t remember to bargain a little bit.

Experience Live Music At Bogobiri House

If you want to see how gifted Nigerians are, come to Bogobiri House in Ikoyi, Lagos to experience an open mic night of talented musicians, artists and comedians every Thursday from 7:30 pm. This is one of my favourite places as it’s a hidden gem and I love live music. There is usually an entrance fee at the door for this event for 2000N (£1.75 /$2.22). Bogobiri House is a one-stop experience as it offers a laidback ambience and is Afrocentric with a restaurant, art gallery, mini library, and a boutique hotel with 16 rooms.

Day trip to Abeokuta and Climb Olumo Rock

Get away from the hustle and bustle of Lagos and take a day trip to Abeokuta in Ogun state. You can opt to do a private tour of Olumo Rock Mountain for one of the best panoramic views of Abeokuta.  It’s an excellent way to avoid crowds as you travel in a comfortable vehicle equipped with Wi-Fi. Upon reaching Olumo Rock, your guide will share stories about Egba warriors and accompany you on the climb to the peak. I have fond memories of visiting Olumo Rock as a child with my family and learning the important history of how this landmark was used as a natural fortress for the Egbas during inter-tribal warfare in the 19th century.

The tour also highlights the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library and historical artefacts. You will be safely guided through Olumo Rock with a guide to lead the way, travel comfortably in an air-conditioned vehicle, and stay energised for your hike with included snacks.

Go Restaurant Hopping

I may be biased as a Nigerian but Nigeria has some of the best food in the world. There’s a diverse food scene which varies from region to region. You can’t leave Lagos without trying our local foods. From fine dining, and local street food to budget-friendly restaurants, there’s something for everyone. For local food, I recommend going to Ofada Boy (Surulere), and Glover Court Suya (Lekki) and chop Amala at one of the best local food spots at Mama Toyin Foods. Some of my other favourite restaurants are Nok, The Cactus Restaurant, Kingfishers and more.

It spans up to 60 acres on the Atlantic Ocean coast and is surrounded by coconut trees bordered by a lagoon and mangrove forest. La Campagne is the ideal place for an escape. It’s a bit of a drive from central Lagos and recommend getting there early in the morning so you can make the most of your day trip there.

Attend a Nigerian Wedding or Owambe Event

Owambe is a Yoruba word which translates to “it is there”. It is the general name used to refer to parties thrown in Nigeria, especially by the Yoruba people. Yoruba people love to party. I promise you won’t leave a Nigerian wedding empty-handed.  They go all out to celebrate anything worth celebrating, be it wedding ceremonies, birthdays, housewarming, retirement, funerals of the old and aged, and even graduations. Nigerians love to celebrate everything.

Enjoy Nightlife in Lagos’s Many Nightclubs, Bars and Lounges

One thing Lagos is infamous for is the nightlife! Nigerians can party all night until the sunrise. With Nigerian music reigning in afrobeat and globally, you’re spoilt for choice with many places to enjoy music in Lagos.  Some clubs I recommend visiting are Zaza and The Library. If you’re looking for a different scenery I recommend visiting waterfront lounges such as Kingfisher, Bolivar, Redbar, and the View Rooftop lounge in Lekki. For other night events and bars, go to The Sky Bar and Obi’s House.

An Ultimate 7-Day Lagos Itinerary

best tourist attractions in lagos

Disclaimer: I have not received any form of payment or compensations for these reviews. All opinions are my own.

Wanderlusts… hear me out!!! 7 days in Lagos seems kinda short (I think it is) but with great planning, you would be able to get your money’s worth and have fun to the peak. This Lagos itinerary is well detailed and entails, sightseeing, food spots, grabbing a daiquiri over sunset, shopping and haggle tips, and also one of longest canopy walkway in Africa!

Before we dive into what I have packed into this 7-day vacation in Lagos, I want you to know that there are a lot of things to do out there, with such short time, none of them would be achievable without proper planning and organising. This itinerary is packed with a lot of gems and places more focus on Lagos Island. If you have more time on your hands, do more research about Lagos and you might find Lagos Mainland more suitable for you.

Are 7 Days In Lagos Enough?

The answer is NO, Lagos is really big and I do not expect you to cover such large land mass in 7 days. 7 days seems just right to visit some major places in Lagos, with adequate planning of course. For this itinerary, I have left a few famous places out for reasons such as traffic and inability to access venue. Besides, a lot of these famous places in Lagos are only famous because of the instagram exposure they have received over the years.

A lot of these places takes longer time to get to, not even to talk of the traffic situation in Lagos (which is dreadful), coupled with the rules venue managements have. However, if you have more than 7 days, I’d say go ahead and see other places in Lagos, Nigeria and have fun!

Few things to keep in mind

  • A valid passport (if traveling with a US passport, one would need a visa, proof of polio and yellow fever vaccinations. If traveling with a Nigerian passport, one does not need anything).
  • A negative PCR test result 72 hrs prior to departure (to and fro).
  • A health form prior to departure that can be found at ncdc.gov
  • Book Airbnb and hotels in advance.
  • Find out what the current currency exchange rate is (as at the time I went on this trip it was $1 to N470).
  • Always have cash handy for Uber and domestic purchases.
  • Get ready to bake in Lagos: Lagos is really hot, remember to stay hydrated.
  • Day 1 – Fly into Murtala Mohammed Int’l Airport, head over to your hotel to unwind or nap, then get into Lagos living, Lunch at The Grid Lagos.
  • Day 2 – Lekki Conservation center, Oniru Beach, Dinner at Danfo Bistro.
  • Day 3 – Shopping mall, Nike art gallery, Lunch at Pitstop Lagos.
  • Day 4 – Spa session, Street food, Lekki Art Market, Dinner at Black Bell Restaurant.
  • Day 5 – Covid Test, Rufus and Bee Games and Arcade, Sunset Daiquiri at Mykonos on the Roof, Late Night Photoshoot (if you are up for it).
  • Day 6 – Healthy juice at Food Shack, more sightseeing, Owambe or Nightlife (if available).
  • Day 7 – Local Restaurant and Flight home!

For some reason I prefer to fly into Lagos, Nigeria at night, so as to be able to beat traffic, get a good night rest, and be revitalized for the next day as I wander around Lagos. If you get into Lagos early enough you should be able to unwind fully and get ready to start your Lagos Living.

best tourist attractions in lagos

The Grid Restaurant & Winery

Hunger sets in after a very long flight, not to talk of the really long wait at the airport. A perfect way to get into the Lagos vibes would be to get an Uber from the airport and head over to The Grid Restaurant and Winery. The ambience and murals sets a friendly and warm “welcome to Lagos tone”.

best tourist attractions in lagos

Taxis are usually expensive from the airport, hence, Uber is your best bet. While getting your luggages, ask for a cart (if necessary), do not allow anyone to grab or help with your bags as they are opportunist wanting to extort money from tourists. A bureau de change would always be available in the international terminal.

Order a hearty plate of the almighty Nigerian Jollof Rice and the “Once in a blue moon” cocktail (they have virgin options) to wind down from that long flight into Lagos.

Accomodation

Once you are done in Lagos Mainland, your next stop should be Lagos Island at Beni Gold Parkview hotel, a four star hotel with spacious rooms, thoughtful amenities, a-la-carte breakfast menu, and in a prime location (Ikoyi Lagos). Should you decide to spend the night on the mainland there are other hotels around such as Marriot Hotel Ikeja, Radisson Blu, amongst a few, that you can lodge.

After a long nice rest, get up very early, grab an Uber to the famous Lekki Conservation Center .

“A day after you arrive, you want to do an activity that gives you a sense of where you are and the culture” @theufoma

A savory, tasty meal of Ewa Agoyin (mashed beans and stew) with bread and plantains for lunch is just the right choice for lunch after such long walk.

best tourist attractions in lagos

Oniru Beach

This private owned beach is one of the famous beaches in Lagos. Oniru beach offers entertainment attractions such as live shows and musical events, as well as other activities such as volleyballing, and horse riding. The beach imposes a 12 am curfew, although it a 24/7 running beach, they stop receiving guests at 12 am. However you can stay overnight if you arrive before curfew. Just as every other tourist attraction in Lagos attracts a fee, Oniru beach is not an exception, it is N1000 (one thousand naira) per adult, and N200 (two hundred naira) for parking.

I would recommend staying at the previous hotel.

If you are an individual who loves a calm beach visit or would like to get pictures of themselves at the beach without a rowdy scene, then you might want to go in the morning around 8 am.

Nike Center For Art and Culture

Nike Art Gallery is one of Nigeria’s hidden treasure located in Lekki-Lagos. The four storey gallery houses over 7000 pieces of arts and textiles. Unlike every other tourist attractions in Lagos, the entrance is free. Pieces from the gallery can range from a few thousands to millions of naira. The gallery opens from 10am to 6pm daily.

Pitstop Lagos

Pitstop lagos is one of the top restaurants in Lagos, a fitness and wellness themed restaurant built to accommodate and ease the stressful lifestyles of Lagosians. After my the art gallery tour I was already famished and ready to grab a taste of Lagos. These are my recommendations:

best tourist attractions in lagos

Rufus and Bee

Ending your day with a little bit of fun is just the right way to go! This games arcade and bowling alley carries a variety of games to play, as well as a bar to sit and unwind. Entrance is free, but you have to buy a Buzzz Card which serves as your access and load it with money in order to play games or access the bowling alley. This card is also reusable – you do not have to purchase another one, if you decide to. visit again before your trip ends.

After the day’s fun I recommend retiring to the Airbnb you have booked in advance. I would advise booking the Airbnb on the island as you would be able to get to everywhere listed in this itinerary easily.

Since Nike Art Gallery doesn’t open till 10am, check in into your Airbnb early, drop your bags and get ready to head out. Your Airbnb should be booked around the Lekki-Ikoyi axis, just for easy movement

Do Something

If you happen to still be in Lagos Nigeria on the 4th day, that means you are enjoying this trip and you are gradually becoming a Lagosian – lol . Take a walk around your vicinity, take a jog on the Lekki-Ikoyi bridge, grab a motorcycle or tricycle (keke napep) to Oniru Market and buy some fruits for smoothie. Just chill and flow with the Lagos vibe.

Traffic Chops

En route Lekki Art Market, grab a traffic snack from traffic vendors just for the thrill of it. For returning Nigerians, this is a nostalgic event they have been waiting for.

best tourist attractions in lagos

Lekki Arts and Craft Market

Speaking of uncovering gems, the LAM is a gem that houses different artifacts that represents Nigeria. Because of its location, it is easily overlooked. For every stall you visit, there is a history lesson or two you would learn. The market consists of over 50 stores that showcases different artworks ranging from wood works, to metal works to pearls to painting and a whole lot more.

Glover Court Suya Run

Nigeria is well known for its famous charcoal grilled meat. Hence, a sin if you visit Nigeria without having suya at night.

HAGGLE TIPS

One thing you need to know is, do not pay the initial price given to you in the market. they automatically assume you have money (remember you are on a budget here, even if your home currency is higher than the Nigerian naira, you are still on a budget). Negotiate with the traders, at least by 25% less than the initial price. If that fails, be a little bit dramatic by slowly walking away and letting them know you would get it from the next stall, they would sell their goods to you ( lol… sometimes, this works ). Never admit or tell a vendor you are a tourist, so as to avoid touristy prices.

Black Bell Restaurant

Street food grab, chill day, start off with agege bread and butter, take a walk, wander and see other things around you.

Mykonos On The Roof

Catch the sunset around 5pm with a passion fruit daiquiri

Late night shoot

Health juice

Owambe/Night life

On this day, you might think there’s nothing to do. If your flight permits, you can always head to local food restaurants around the airport. You can also shop for souvenirs and gifts to take home.

25 Beautiful & Fun Places to Visit in Lagos, Nigeria

' src=

If you are looking for places to visit in Lagos, you’ve come to the right place! It is not a secret that Lagos isn’t the most touristic destination in the world. Apart from residents and Nigerians in general, most people who come here do so for business purposes. Nevertheless, the city is not bereft of tourist attractions and in this article, I will be sharing some of the best places to visit in Lagos, Nigeria.

I have written extensively about some of these places on this blog, so if you are an avid reader, you are already familiar with them. I usually write only about places I have been to and can recommend, however, for this list, I will be including a few places I haven’t visited yet (but would love to go to).

Having said that, please bear in mind that reviews and recommendations for the places I have visited are based on my personal experiences and may vary for you. Now, without further ado, if you ever find yourself looking for fun places to visit in Lagos, here are my top 25 picks!

What's Covered in this Post

Fun Places to Visit in Lagos Island

Jara Beach Resort in Lagos

One of the great things about Lagos is its proximity to the ocean and that brings with it several stretches of beach land and getaway opportunities. But Lagos beaches aren’t like most you’d find anywhere else. In the sense that you cannot simply drive up to a beach, pull up an umbrella, sit back and relax, especially as a foreigner.

Most of the ordinary beaches you would find as you drive away from Victoria Island do not have good structures for tourists and there are gatekeepers. You would be required to pay a fee – usually, a small amount, to enjoy the oceanfront. However, there are a few areas that are more tailored to tourists. In this article, I will be focusing on the upper end of the scale – not necessarily in terms of budget alone, but also in terms of infrastructure. I will write about other beaches and beachfront properties in a separate article.

Fun Places to Visit in Lagos Island: Beaches & Beach Resorts in Lagos, Nigeria

1. jara beach resort.

best tourist attractions in lagos

Jara Beach Resort is arguably the best beach resort in Lagos at the moment. The resort stands out with its offering of an all-inclusive stay at the beachfront property. Mark and I spent three days at the resort earlier this year and we both enjoyed our time there tremendously. The resort is located in Museyo, Eleko, Lagos and is easily accessible by road.

2. Sencillo Lagos

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Ministry of Enjoyment (@enjoy.ng)

Sencillo Lagos is an exclusive 3-bedroom beachfront property in Ilashe, Lagos. This is one of the places I haven’t been to yet but would love to visit if I get a chance to. Sencillo is accessible by boat from Victoria Island.

3. La Campagne Tropicana

La Campagne Tropicana Lagos

La Campagne Tropicana is another lovely beach resort to visit in Lagos. It is located on the outskirts of Lagos and it can take a while to get there, especially if you are travelling from Lagos Mainland. The appeal of La Campagne Tropicana is the clean and beautiful beach the property is on, as well as the availability of several activities to engage in. This is the only other location in Lagos that I think deserves to call itself a resort.

4. Hov Beach Resort

View this post on Instagram A post shared by HOV BEACH LAGOS (@hovbeachlagos)

This place like Sencillo, is somewhere I’d love to visit. It is a 6-bedroom beachfront property, also located in Ilashe.

5. Tarkwa Bay

Jaybee Beach Camp

Tarkwa Bay is another beach that I can recommend a visit to. While I didn’t particularly enjoy being in this beach area (don’t take my experience as a blueprint, many people love the beach here), I loved spending time in the cabin and the areas surrounding it. Also, the beach area behind the Jaybee Beach Camp is much nicer, so be sure to check it out. Tarkwa Bay is accessible via boat from Fiki Marina on Victoria Island.

Here are other beautiful beach areas I haven’t been to yet but think are worth visiting in Lagos.

More Beautiful & Fun Places to Visit in Lagos Island and Environs…

11. lakowe lakes golf and country estate.

Cabin Lakowe Lakes

Lakowe Lakes Golf and Country Estate is a great place for golf lovers in Lagos. Here, you can enjoy a game of golf or simply spend your time relaxing in any of the available accommodation options. My visit to Lakowe Lakes was wonderful, however, I have read some not-so-pleasant reviews lately ( see Alex’s post here , as an example). Be sure to go through to make a more informed decision and also to manage your expectations.

12. Epe Resort and Spa

View this post on Instagram A post shared by EPE RESORT AND SPA (@eperesort)

13. Lekki Conservation Centre

best tourist attractions in lagos

If you google ‘fun places to visit in Lagos’, Lekki Conservation Centre is likely to top the list. The truth is that there aren’t that many places like this in Lagos – and there should be. The main attraction of the Conservation Centre these days is the canopy walkway however, if you are anything like me, you’ll love the boardwalk even more.

14. Epe Mangroves

Epe Mangroves

The Epe Mangroves and Fish Market are quite unconventional but if you find yourself in Lagos looking for an unconventional attraction, this is a place to consider visiting. Here, you can sail across the mangroves in a local canoe and spend time with the locals at the fish market or a local palm wine factory.

15. Terra Kulture

Terra-Kulture-Fela-Play

The Terra Kulture space holds a restaurant, bookstore and a nice little art gallery. But what you should try to see is a stage play here. If it is a play by Bolanle Austin-Peters, then I can guarantee that you’ll enjoy it. Look out for fan favourites like Wakaa the Musical and Fela’s Republic and the Kalakuta Queens.

16. Nike Art Gallery

Nike Art Gallery

This art gallery is also a visitor’s favourite in Lagos. It is a three-story building filled with artworks from all over the country, all of which, are available for purchase. At the time of this writing, entry into Nike Art Gallery is free, which adds to the appeal for visitors on a budget.

17. Bogobiri House

Bogobiri Ikoyi

The atmosphere and vibe at Bogobiri are the main attraction for me. It is such a cool space nestled in Ikoyi. The Bogobiri House features a boutique hotel, restaurant, bookstore, art gallery and an intimate concert area.

18. Jazz Hole

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Jazzhole (@jazzholelagos)

If you love coffee, books and the occasional concert, then you will love Jazzhole, a bookstore based in Ikoyi, Lagos.

Upbeat Lekki Fun Places in Lagos

Upbeat is a recreational centre in Lekki geared towards fitness and exercise. Here you will find facilities such as a football field, basketball court and a park with trampolines and other indoor activities. This place is also great for team-building sessions. They have a program specifically tailored to this. The program is a mix of indoor and outdoor challenges. It’s great fun!

20. Omu Resort

best tourist attractions in lagos

Omu Resort is also a recreational centre located in Lagos. This park has several fun activities for visitors to engage in. I had a pretty good time when I visited a few years back, however, the place looked unfinished. I wouldn’t normally have an issue with this but the park keeps adding activities to its space. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing but I would prefer that they put finishing touches to the facilities they already have before including more.

Also, Omu Resort has a zoo on-premises. These days, I feel very conflicted about visiting zoos, so I thought to mention this here, in case you have reservations about visiting as well.

21. Rufus and Bee

Places to visit in Lagos

Rufus and Bee is a game arcade and bowling centre located in Victoria Island, Lagos. This is a place worth visiting to let your hair down and activate your inner child.

Fun Places to Visit in Lagos Mainland

Most of the interesting places to visit in Lagos are clustered in Victoria Island, Lekki and Ikoyi. This doesn’t mean the mainland is completely left out. Okay, let’s be honest, the mainland is left out :(. I’ve purposely left out the places below for personal reasons, as stated. But please feel free to include them if they interest you…

  • The Ikeja and Maryland Malls: because there’s no unique activity to do here. Malls are good for shopping (at Shoprite), window shopping at the other stores and watching movies. These are fun things to do in Lagos, but I’m looking to include only fairly unique activities.
  • The New Afrika Shrine: because I visited this place when there was no concert and let’s just say I am not tempted to return.
  • Restaurants and Spots to Hangout: the mainland has a good number of these but that’s not what this list is for 🙂

Here are some places I recommend;

Beautiful and Fun Places to Visit in Lagos Mainland

22. jaekel house.

Fun Places to Visit in Lagos

This old railroad house, located in Ebute Metta, is great for picnics and a trip back in time. The building, constructed in the late 1800s, houses relics of the old railway corporation, among other things. I’m not sure if this is usually the case, but when my friends and I visited, we got an in-depth tour of the house and its relics, rode on the manual train – which was chaotic and fun and ended our time with a picnic behind the house.

23. Johnson Jakande Tinubu Park

JJT Park Ikeja

Because there aren’t many public parks in Lagos (and also because Lagos is overpopulated), this park can get very crowded. Nevertheless, it is a great spot for a picnic if you visit on a good day. Be aware that part of the park adjoins a major road. If blaring horns are unbearable for you, then you should visit, take your Instagram photos and escape to somewhere with more peace.

24. Badagry

best tourist attractions in lagos

I initially left Badagry out of this list because considering her history, I wouldn’t necessarily say it’s a fun place to visit in Lagos. It is also quite out of town but here we are. Also, I had originally (grudgingly) included an amusement park situated along the Lagos Ibadan Expressway which a commenter pointed out isn’t in Lagos. Hence its removal from this list.

Having said all of that, Badagry does have a few beautiful places to check out. There’s a nice stretch of beach where you can hang out and there’s also the Whispering Palms resort – which sounds like a cool spot as well.

25. Jhalobia (and Honorary Mention: Shodex Gardens)

Enjoy picnic season in any one of these two gardens situated on Lagos Mainland. I haven’t been to either but they have my attention, especially the Jhalobia Gardens. Shodex Gardens seems like the underdog though. Everyone drives past it but few people bother to go inside. As with Omu Resort, I’m not a big fan of the mini-zoo it has but judging from the pictures I see online, it seems like it would be a fairly good place to visit – especially for kids.

Tips for Travelling in and around Lagos

Tips for Travelling In and Around Lagos, Nigeria

  • Plan your movements around Lagos very carefully. Lagos and Traffic are synonymous. So allow enough travel time.
  • Lagos establishments can be very weird (and sometimes hostile) about taking pictures, especially if you do so with a digital camera. Honestly, I do not understand this rule and I think it is silly but this is something you should be aware of as you visit some of these places. Places featured on this list that have such policies include La Campagne Tropicana, Rufus and Bee, Hi-Impact Planet, Upbeat and Jazzhole.
  • I think visitors enjoy Lagos best when they have someone to show them around. It isn’t a solo traveller-friendly city.
  • Uber and Bolt work well in Lagos. Public transportation in a Danfo (the yellow buses – not recommended for tourists) are also available.
  • Be situationally aware, optimize for people’s experience and keep your wits about you.

Look at how you side line Lagos mainland. Haba! There are some fun things to do at Lagos mainland too. Although, they may not be well promoted or plenty. But I love the parks on the mainland but they are all seem to be at Ikeja the Capital. Thanks for sharing.

Is there an entrance fee for Bogobiri house?

I didn’t sideline the Mainland (intentionally) :). I’d love to include more fun areas (excluding the malls) and I’m open to learning about these places. For Bogobiri, there’s no entrance fee but you probably have to get something at the restaurant /shop or lodge there.

Hi-impact isn’t even in Lagos for your information.

Cool. It shouldn’t be on this list anyway. Happy to remove it.

' src=

I love this lists a lot, which of this is not quite expensive to visit out of the top ten listed..being to most of the others listed below. Thanks

I think La Campagne Tropicana, Tarkwa Bay, Laguna and Landmark Beach are places that can be visited on a relatively slim budget.

' src=

I’m short of words tho Most of these places am seeing here actually looks like abroad Didn’t know we have such in Nigeria

Looks like am spending my December in Lagos

Happy you love the list. Lagos in December is also very bubbly! Lots of concerts and parties, plays at Terra Kulture and so on. It’s a lot of fun for visitors.

You should also look around the blog for more beautiful places in other states in Nigeria 🙂

Great list Amarachi! I like to think that depending on what a tourist wants, the island or mainland could be a better pick. For instance, Maryland Mall has actually got a bustling skating arena and many other attractions host some of the best restaurants for local food.

Some of my favourite places to visit in Lagos include Bics Garden, Kalakuta Museum, Signature Beyond Art Gallery, Ultimate Paintball Arena and Ozone Cinemas.

Oh, I didn’t know Maryland Mall has a skating rink. That’s cool. Thanks for sharing your favourite spots.

You’re welcome! I forgot to add Badagry too. 😉

I’ve never been to Lagos before. I’ve never even left East. But these are such beautiful places to see. I hope to be in Lagos soon, maybe later in life when I am independent. I’m bookmarking this post!

Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for your comment, Favour. Lagos can be a crazy travel experience, especially for people who have lived in saner, calmer cities. I’m sure you have a visual representation of what the city looks like and sense of what the vibe is, even though you haven’t visited yet.

The places listed in this list are part of the cleaner and beautiful sides of Lagos. I hope you get to visit a few of them when you do come here and enjoy your trip altogether.

' src=

Have you done this, yet? If you haven’t do please.

No, still haven’t.

' src=

I agree with the fact that the mainland does not have a lot of tourists attractions. I hear there is a paintball arena in Magodo though I have not been there.

We have more of malls: I have been to most of the malls a lot of times. I will usually watch a movie, sometimes do some shopping, try out the different restaurants etc.

I honestly think the policy of not allowing pictures in some of the attractions should be reviewed.

I have been to Johnson Jakande, Rufus and Bee, Omu resort, Upbeat etc.

I enjoyed Oniru beach, King Diamond beach etc as at when I visited.

I’ve been looking forward to visiting most of the beach resorts, you mentioned above.

Great list 👌👌👌

You’re a true Lagosian! Good to see you’ve visited a lot of these places…The paintball arena in Magodo is called Ziggies, I think. Sounds like it would be a fun place to check out for people into that sort of thing. Thanks for sharing, Faith!

' src=

i will like to visit the johnson jakande park but pls can you tell me how is their entrance fee there?

The last I was there, it was free to enter the park.

One thing about Lagos is that it has lots of interesting places and many sides which it shows to guests. Everything you do in this city is tour-worthy, whether you are staying at a hotel , or a resort , or simply sampling the dishes at its restaurants . As long as it’s Eko you are in, you’ll be thrilled, no matter where you decide to turn your attention.

However, for the sake of history and culture, we suggest that you put these 7 best tourist attractions in Lagos on top of your list.

Built on the ruins of Her Majesty’s Broad Street Prisons, Freedom Park is one of the best tourist attractions in Lagos. The prisons were renovated to preserve the history and cultural heritage of the Nigerian people.

This project commemorated the 50th anniversary of Independence Day in October 2010 to remember the nation’s foremost fathers of their patriotism, which eventually led to Nigeria’s independence from the colonists.

Freedom Park is a heritage site. It serves various purposes all at once due to it rising from a place of oppression to expression, a green space, an art and cultural space, and of course a historical site. It was recently awarded with the title of the Entertainment Capital of Lagos (ECL).

Location: Freedom Park Lagos, 1, Hospital Road, Old Prison Ground, Off Broad Street, Lagos Island.

The Badagry Black Heritage Museum located in the former district officer’s office built in 1863, houses hundreds of artefacts and historical relics that detail over 300 years of the movement of slaves through Lagos. From the early 1500s, Badagry was one of many trading and transport areas in West Africa for slaves being sold off to America. It is estimated that roughly 550,000 African slaves sailed through this area.

Heritage Museum takes tourists on a journey to Nigeria’s slave past. Its nine galleries tell this tale using artefacts like trade documents, dated shackles, sketches, photos, sculptures, and other salvaged historical records that chronicled Badagry’s dark past. Another good thing about visiting this place is that the whole of Badagry is a living museum; you can learn the role the town played during the slave trade just by being there.

Location: Marina, GRA Road, Badagry, Lagos.

Nike Art Gallery is another of the best tourist attractions in Lagos, it is arguably the largest gallery in all of West Africa. The centre is situated in a five-story building that houses an art gallery, textile museum, and coffee shop; spotting more than 80,000 collections of artworks created by various Nigerian artists.

You may need the entire day to see all the artworks on display at the Center of Art and Culture. Fortunately, it is open seven days a week, so you can come anytime you want to look at more work. The various exhibitions and workshops hosted at the Nike Art make this place a distinct tourist attraction.

Another thing to note when visiting the Nike Art Gallery is that dance troops occasionally come in to entertain guests. Other things you can do is take a week-long art course with Nike herself and stay at the guest hours provided by the gallery. You could sample the available cuisine too.

Location: No 2, Nike Art Gallery Road, 3rd Roundabout, Ikate, Lekki, Lagos, Nigeria.

The National Theatre stands tall and proud as a centre that reflects the periods of local and regional art history in Nigeria. The ideas borne out of this place have driven significant developments. Since the Theatre was established, it has acted as a main events venue, relaxation centre, and tourist spot for nationals and foreigners alike. The management has also done well to retain the serenity of its environment over the years through hard work.

The halls of the National Theatre, act as important venues where people can host historic events, meetings, and gatherings. The cinema halls have staged interesting dramas too. The facilities at the Theatre have been able to meet the needs of both Nigerian and foreign guests. The managing board takes pride in consistently preserving the artistic nature of this edifice.

Location: National Theatre, Iganmu, Surulere, Lagos.

The Lekki Conservation Center, rightfully graces the list of best tourist attractions in Lagos, due to how magnificent this place is. The Centre was established as a plant and animal protection program headed by the Nigerian Conservation Foundation and Lagos State Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperative.

Lekki Conservation spans 190 acres of land bordered by the Lekki Lagoon. It exists to preserve and guard endangered species in Nigeria from extinction. This place is where to visit if you want to see rare birds and animals.

Location: KM 19, Lekki-Epe Expressway, Lekki Peninsula II, Lekki.

The Nigerian National Museum stands as a beacon of the country’s rich cultural heritage. Established in 1957 by English archaeologist Kenneth Murray, this treasure trove is home to a spectacular collection of Nigerian art that spans the epochs. You’ll find statuary, intricate carvings, archaeological finds, and ethnographic exhibits here.

One of the most prominent jewels at the National Museum is the Jemaa Head, which is a remarkable example of the terra-cotta craft from the Nok culture, dating back to 900 and 200 BC. It was unearthed in the village of Jemaa which it was named after. The artefact serves as a relevant connection to Nigeria’s prehistoric past.

Other captivating finds at this museum include the ‘Cycle of Life’ exhibit which shows interesting artefacts such as a clay Yoruba pot which was traditionally used to bury an umbilical cord, and an Egungun masquerade costume which is worn during the traditional dance at a chief’s funeral.

Location: 11 Military Street, Lagos Island, Lagos.

Tarkwa Bay Beach is one of Lagos’ most popular and oldest beaches. If you’re in the city and looking for the best tourist attractions in Lagos, near the ocean, Tarkwa should be on your list. The beach is clean, affordable, and exclusive.

The Bay is one of the few select beaches in the city where you can get some alone time without interruptions from the crowd. You can go here with friends as well if you need company.

Tarkwa is sheltered and sits close to the Lagos Harbour. Due to it being an island, you can only get to this place by boat or water taxi. If you are a swimmer or enjoy water sports like kayaking, then you should check this place out. The locals are friendly too, so you’ll have no problem fitting in.

Location: Lagos, Harbour.

Melding a lively character with a cherished seafaring tradition, Lagos basks in its reputation as one of southern Portugal's favorite holiday destinations. In the western Algarve, about 90 kilometers from the regional capital Faro , this attractive resort town is celebrated for its scenic coastline of beautiful beaches and stunning natural rock formations.

The town has a young, cheerful vibe and a wealth of historic attractions and fun things to do, with facilities that include a modern marina, nearby zoo, and even a science center for kids. By navigating Lagos' old town visitors can also savor the hospitality of some excellent cafés and restaurants. Alternatively, amble the waterfront promenade or indulge in a sightseeing cruise and explore the fantastic sea caves and grottoes that have placed Lagos well and truly on the Algarve tourism map.

Beaches

Some of the Algarve's most celebrated beaches are located in the Lagos vicinity, with two easily reached on foot.

Two kilometers southwest of the town center, Praia do Camilo is the postcard favorite. Framed by outcrops of fantastic rock formations, this sheltered slither of sand is illuminated in spring by a mantle of colorful flowers that cling to the cliff edge above. Arrive early during the summer to bag a spot, and note that by late afternoon, the beach is cast in shadow as the sun starts to dip behind the promontory.

The vast Meia Praia starts its run behind the marina and stretches four kilometers to the east. Its name in English means "Half Beach" - a curious moniker given that this is the longest beach in the region. For sun-seekers, however, this translates as more sand, and there's ample space to relax and bronze up. It's an exposed beach, though, and popular with water sports enthusiasts. A number of restaurants line the dunes and a regular bus service from Avenida dos Descobrimentos serves its entire length.

Out of town lies Porto de Mós . A fabulous coastal footpath leading from the Ponta da Piedade lighthouse will take walkers to this lovely beach, but allow an hour to hike the trail.

Ponta da Piedade

One of the most recognized natural landmarks in Portugal, the mournfully named "Point of Pity" is a scenic headland that juts out into the sea on the western edge of Lagos Bay . The dramatic sandstone cliffs appear burnished with gold, such is the vivid brilliance of their burnt ochre hue.

Rising out of the transparent waters below are huge rock formations, some arched and contorted as if melted by the sun. Out of sight, tucked under the cliff face, is a series of caves and grottoes, their bellies carved out by restless Atlantic swells. These hidden caverns can be explored by boat on a fun-packed Ponta da Piedade grotto sightseeing cruise from Lagos , or an equally rewarding kayak tour .

Back on terra firma meanwhile, sightseers can follow footpaths that snake around the headland to reach a number of viewpoints with dizzying views over the gnarled stacks and craggy pillars - a bizarre and beautiful seascape.

For a romantic end of day finale, gather by the lighthouse that crowns the promontory and wait for the sun to set over the western Algarve coast.

Kayak Tours along the Coast

The coastline west out of Lagos is straight out of a pirate adventure picture book. The scenic, honeycombed cliffs; weird chimneystack rock formations; and the dozens of hidden sea caves and ancient grottos at Ponte da Piedade make for exhilarating exploration and are tourist attractions in themselves.

One of the most exciting ways of charting a course along this incredible seascape is by joining a guided kayak and snorkel trip excursion . Paddle out over warm turquoise shallows for fisheye-views of this wonderfully evocative environment. Later, plunge into the Atlantic's alluring waters and marvel at the undersea world alive beneath you. Between forays, kayakers have the chance to soak up the sun on a deserted beach.

Igreja de Santo António/Museu Municipal

One of the Algarve's most inspiring cultural combinations is the coupling of Lagos' church of St. Anthony with the town's municipal museum . Together they represent one of the most rewarding sightseeing experiences in the region.

Visitors first enter the museum - an ethnographic miscellany of oddities, rarities, and curios. Artifacts on permanent display include a beautiful mini altarpiece, whittled from cork, and a collection of priest's vestments, one dating from 1578. A magnificent near-complete Roman mosaic is startling in its centuries-old detail.

Visitors can spend an hour or so absorbing this fascinating exhibition, going backwards and forwards through each gallery before entering the adjacent 18th-century church to gaze upon one of the most dazzling interiors of any religious site in the Algarve. The Baroque rhapsody of ornate gilded wood carvings and decorative tiles is impressive and a suitably ebullient way to end the tour.

Address: Rua General Alberto Silveira, Lagos

A radical activity attraction for all the family, the Lagos Adventure Park is all about following high ropes courses set at different heights and at various degrees of difficulty through a canopy of swaying, lofty trees.

Testing nerves and physical ability, daredevil patrons have to surmount a number of challenges along the way, such as traversing bridges, navigating rope nets, and riding giant ziplines. The ropes courses are set at three levels of complexity: Curious, Adventurous, or Fearless.

There's no need for any limbering up, just the will to overcome each obstacle. Fun lovers' safety is guaranteed under the watchful eye of highly qualified personnel, leaving you free to complete each circuit under your own steam. Afterwards, the sense of accomplishment will be palpable.

Address: Rua Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen, Meia Praia, Lagos

Lemur at Lagos Zoo

Rubber-limbed gibbons, marble-eyed lemurs, and fur ball marmosets are just some of the animals waiting to greet visitors at Lagos Zoo . Joining the primates in this semitropical park, approximately eight kilometers north of Lagos, are other residents, like the sleek bobcat, and rare species such as Indian muntjac deer. Heading up the entertainment is a troupe of cheeky meerkats.

The variety of birdlife is impressive, and the colorful and exotic flocks include channel-billed toucans, rainbow lorikeets, and the wonderfully named chattering lory. Owls and assorted waterfowl can also be admired.

In addition, the zoo's countryside setting is an ideal showcase for its farm stock: animals like sheep, goats, and horses.

Near the "monkey lake" is a picnic area, where visitors can observe the primates' antics while enjoying an alfresco lunch. There's also a rustically-styled on-site restaurant. A playground for toddlers makes sure the entire family remains amused at this cheerful and engaging facility.

Forte Ponta da Bandeira

Built in the 17th century to defend the approaches to Lagos harbor, this square-shaped, pocket-sized fortress remains in remarkably good condition considering its age.

Situated over a wedge of sand overlooking a shallow bay, four turrets shaped like spinning tops set at each corner help distinguish the fort's squat profile. A narrow moat lends the stronghold an impregnable quality, and sightseers have to cross a drawbridge to reach the inner courtyard.

The visitor experience is limited to a small 18th-century chapel lined with pretty azulejos tiles, and exhibition space dedicated to Portugal's era of discoveries. From the ramparts however, visitors can enjoy uninterrupted views over the water and back across the avenue towards the castle walls and fortifications that uphold the medieval character of the vicinity.

Address: Cais da Solaria, Lagos

Mercado dos Escravos

The Slave Market in Lagos marks a less salubrious chapter in the town's history, and represents a darker side to Portugal's otherwise golden Age of Discovery . On this site in 1444, Europe's first slave market opened, selling slaves that were captured and transported from Africa. The arcaded building seen today dates from 1691 and served as a customs office.

Abandoned for many years, the small gallery now hosts a permanent exhibition charting Portugal's shameful trade in human cargo, and the role Lagos played in its proliferation. Displays include confiscated personal possessions and a skeleton of one of the hapless individuals, unearthed nearby. The exhibition is limited in scope but nonetheless sobering and rather moving - and the authorities have classified the building as a Monument of Public Interest.

Address: Praça Infante do Henrique, Lagos

The theme of this engrossing Live Science exhibition and cultural center is "The Portuguese Maritime Discoveries," and it provides a fun-filled and educational way of keeping children happy and entertained, especially if the weather is overcast and the beach is out of the question.

Portugal's seafaring heritage is brought to life by a series of games, puzzles, and interactive modules that bridges the gap between the discoveries of past and present, and youngsters are invited to embark on their own voyage of discovery. They can help crew a 15th-century caravel, or don an eye patch and join a pirate ship. Meanwhile, the submarine takes everybody to new depths of exploration.

The center is situated on the top floor of Lagos market , so naturally there's a lighthouse to visit, and kids can have great fun learning how to use semaphore flags to send signals. All the time they are finding out more about navigation, communication, and life on board various seagoing vessels. The concept is simple but hugely enjoyable, and a team of enthusiastic multilingual staff is at hand to offer advice and answer questions.

Address: Rua Dr Faria e Silva, Lagos

Marina de Lagos

Yachts and motorboats of all shapes and sizes tie up at this first-class mooring facility, but Lagos Marina provides far more than just a safe haven for visiting watercraft. Anchored along the boardwalk are several very good eateries where customers can relax and soak in the seaside atmosphere. At night, some of these cafés host live music performances.

Numerous coastal cruise companies are based here, offering anything from exhilarating sightseeing excursions to the rock stacks, sea caves, and grottoes around Ponta da Piedade to fantastic dolphin "seafaris" that head out into the bay.

A swing bridge connects the marina with Avenida dos Descobrimentos , the town's main avenue. The 462-berth yacht basin is also within walking distance of the sweeping Meia Praia beach.

Address: Marina de Lagos, Lagos

Igreja de Santa Maria-Praça do Infante D. Henrique

Lending dynamic perspective to Praça do Infante D. Henrique is the late 15th-century church of St. Mary . Set in the northwestern corner of the square, the church still retains a Renaissance doorway, which fortunately survived the great earthquake of 1755.

The building was renovated during the latter half of the 16th century and considerably expanded in the 18th century, so what visitors see today is an interesting amalgamation of architectural styles.

Of note inside is a statue of São Gonçalo of Lagos, a fisherman's son born in 1360 who became an Augustinian saint. The square, embellished with water features, is named after Prince Henry the Navigator , who laid the foundations for Portugal's maritime expansion in the 15th century and became governor of the Algarve. He sits, cast in bronze, on a plinth in the middle of the concourse.

This is a wonderful area to relax in such noble company, but it's worth strolling across to the Castelo dos Governadores to admire the beautiful Manueline window set in the façade.

Address: Praça do Infante D. Henrique, Lagos

We recommend these great hotels in Lagos close to town and beaches:

  • Cascade Wellness & Lifestyle Resort : luxury resort, steps to fabulous beaches, sprawling outdoor pools, holistic spa.
  • Villas D. Dinis : mid-range rates, short walk to beaches and town, imaginatively-decorated guest rooms, two lovely outdoor pools, rain showers.
  • Hotel Marina Rio : great-value hotel, marina views, family-run, excellent breakfast, easy stroll to the old town, rooftop pool.
  • Sollagos Apartamentos Turisticos : budget pricing, whitewashed Mediterranean-style buildings, apartments with kitchenettes, outdoor pool with ample sunbeds.
  • Half-Day Lagos and Sagres Tour : Lagos is inexorably linked to the historical figure of Henry the Navigator (1394-1460). The town was an important naval center, a boatbuilding hub that supplied the caravels that spearheaded Portugal's golden Age of Discovery in the 15th century. Henry's fabled school of navigation was based at Sagres, 40 kilometers west. Tourists interested in learning more about this fascinating period in the country's history should consider joining a Lagos and Sagres Half-Day Tour , which explores both these destinations in vivid detail.
  • Benagil Caves Tours from Lagos : Boasting one of southern Portugal's major marina facilities, Lagos is an obvious departure point for sightseeing tours setting sail for destinations farther along the coast. In fact, navigating the Algarve's scenic coastline by boat is an adventure in itself. By heading east and plotting a course to Carvoeiro, visitors can admire sensational sea caves and dramatic rock formations similar to those embellishing the headland at Lagos. One of these natural wonders is the stunning Benagil sea cave, and the most rewarding way to reach this extraordinary grotto is to embark on a boat tour of Benagil from Lagos .

Aerial view of the Alvor Course at Palmares

Boavista : The nearest golf course to Lagos, the 18-hole par 71 Boavista layout follows the natural contours of an environment blessed with stunning views of the Bay of Lagos to the south, and the Monchique Hills to the north.

Designed by Howard Swan and integrated within the upscale Boavista Golf & Spa resort - located about five kilometers from the town center - the course offers players two very distinctive sections of play. The front nine holes gently climb to the highest part of the resort, with holes 6 and 8 requiring careful play over a tricky ravine. Pause at the 8 th tee and admire the exhilarating panoramic views of the coast and the Atlantic beyond before tackling the back nine.

Subsequent holes descend into a verdant and undulating landscape featuring streams and lakes, where accurate play is essential in order to avoid a water penalty. Long fairways and greens, defended by some deep bunkers, test club selection and skill as you approach and putt the final four holes. Afterwards, relax at the "19 th " while rounding up the scorecard.

Address: Boavista Golf & Spa, Quinta da Boavista

Official site: http://www.boavistaresort.pt

Palmares : Set 10 kilometers east of Lagos, Palmares is one of the most picturesque golf courses in the Algarve. A 27-hole par 72 layout designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr., Palmares comprises three 9-hole circuits: the Alvor course, Lagos course, and Praia course.

The first nine holes run through bucolic woodland and down towards the beach, all the time revealing lovely views of the Alvor estuary and the sparkling ocean. The Lagos nine are played through parkland and encroach farther towards the beach. The final nine are actually set in around some impressive sand dunes. These three returning nine-loops can be played in any sequence, with each offering a different golf experience.

Palmares Golf Course is part of the luxury Palmares Beach & Golf Resort. The clubhouse is set on the highest point of the layout and affords a spectacular panorama of Meia Praia beach and distant Lagos.

From Lagos heading west there are some wonderful coastal towns and villages to explore. Just 15 minutes away is Luz, a family-friendly seaside resort that's fronted by a lovely bay-shaped beach flanked to the east by a towering black-rock cliff - an unusual volcanic feature and a favorite nesting site for peregrine falcons. The challenging hike to the top rewards sturdy legs with inspiring Atlantic Ocean views, and the coastal path continues all the way back to Lagos.

Farther west is Salema. Once a thriving fishing village, this delightful hamlet has managed to retain its yesteryear charm, despite the fact that many of the old fishermen's cottages are now converted into vacation lets. Salema's sandy bay and sheltered waters make it a favorite with local family groups and those wishing to escape the crowds.

Beyond Salema, the western Algarve remains relatively undeveloped until Sagres, the southwesternmost point of continental Europe. Henry the Navigator is believed to have set up his school of navigation here in the 15 th century. Today, though, it is surfers, backpackers, and the more adventurous traveler that chart a course to this isolated and windswept part of the world.

You can explore the Algarve on your own if you have time, but a convenient way of seeing the Algarve's wild and wonderful west coast is to join a full-day tour of the region , which besides Sagres also takes in the beguiling Cape St. Vincent headland.

For a romantic end to the day, gather at the lighthouse that crowns the promontory and wait for the sun to set over the western coast of the Algarve.

3 Kayaking trips along the coast

Kayaking trips along the coast

The coastline west of Lagos is straight out of a pirate adventure photo book. The scenic, honeycomb cliffs; weird chimney rock formations; and the dozens of hidden sea caves and ancient caves Ponte da Piedade make for exciting exploration and are tourist attractions in their own right. One of the most exciting ways to chart a route around this incredible seascape is to join a guided kayak and snorkeling excursion. Paddle out over warm turquoise shallows for fish-eye views of this wonderfully evocative setting. Later, plunge into the alluring waters of the Atlantic Ocean and marvel at the undersea world that lives beneath you. Between trips, kayakers have the chance to soak up the sun on a deserted beach.

4 Santo António Church / Municipal Museum

Attractions in Lagos

One of the Algarve’s most inspiring cultural combinations is the linking of Lagos’ Church of St. Anthony with the city’s municipal museum . Together they represent one of the most rewarding sightseeing experiences in the region. Visitors enter the museum for the first time – an ethnographic collection of oddities, curiosities and curiosities. Permanent objects include a beautiful mini cork altarpiece and a collection of priestly vestments, one of which dates from 1578. A beautiful almost-complete Roman mosaic is surprising in its ancient detail. Visitors can spend an hour or so absorbing this fascinating exhibition, going back and forth through each gallery before entering the adjacent 18th-century church to gaze at one of the most stunning interiors of religious sites in the Algarve. The Baroque rhapsody of ornate gilded carvings and decorative tiles is impressive and a suitably exuberant way to end the tour. Please note: the museum is closed until January 2019 for renovation work.

5 Lagos Adventure Park

The Lagos Adventure Park is a radical activity attraction for all the family and it’s all about following a ropes course at different heights and levels of difficulty through a canopy of swaying, tall trees. Testing nerve and physical skills, the daredevils must face a number of challenges along the way such as crossing bridges, navigating rope nets and riding gigantic cable cars. The ropes courses are set at three levels of complexity: curious, adventurous or fearless. There is no need to limbize, just the will to overcome any obstacle. Darling enthusiasts’ safety is guaranteed under the watchful eye of highly qualified staff, allowing you to complete each circuit under your own steam. Afterwards the feeling of fulfillment will be palpable.

6 Lagos Zoological Park

Lemur at Lagos Zoo Glen Bowman / photo modified

Rubber-limbed gummies, marble-eyed rodents and fur ball fur seals are just some of the animals waiting to greet visitors at Lagos Zoo . Joining the primates in this semitropical park, about eight kilometers north of Lagos, are other residents such as the sleek bobcat and rare species such as Indian muntjac deer. On their way to the entertainment is a group of cheeky meerkats. The variety of birds is impressive, and the colorful and exotic flocks include flanked toucans, rainbow lorikeets and the beautifully named chattering lorikeet. Owls and various water birds can also be admired. Furthermore, the zoo’s rural setting is an ideal showcase for the farm’s stock: animals such as sheep, goats and horses. Nearby the “monkey lake” is a picnic area where visitors can observe the antics of the primates while enjoying an outdoor lunch. There is also a rustic restaurant on site. A playground for toddlers will keep the whole family happy with this cheerful and engaging facility.

7 Fort Ponta da Bandeira

Attractions in Lagos

Ponta da Bandeira Fort

Built in the 17th century to defend the approaches to Lagos harbour, this square, pocket-sized fortress remains in remarkably good condition considering its age. Situated on a patch of sand overlooking a shallow bay, four turrets shaped like tops at each corner help distinguish the squat profile of the fort. A narrow moat gives the fortress an impregnable quality and tourists must cross a drawbridge to reach the courtyard. The visitor experience is limited to a small 18th-century chapel lined with beautiful azulejos tiles and exhibition space dedicated to Portugal’s Age of Discovery. From the ramparts, visitors can enjoy uninterrupted views across the water and back across the avenue towards the castle walls and fortifications that support the medieval character of the area.

Location: Cais da Solaria, Lagos

8 Slave Market

Attractions in Lagos

The Slave Market in Lagos is a less salutary chapter in the city’s history, and represents a dark side of Portugal’s otherwise golden Age of Discovery . At this site in 1444, the first European slave market opened, selling slaves captured and transported from Africa. The arcaded building that we see today dates from 1691 and served as a customs office. The small gallery, abandoned for years, now hosts a permanent exhibition on Portugal’s shameful human cargo trade and the role Lagos played in its proliferation. Displays include confiscated personal belongings and a skeleton of one of the unfortunate individuals, which were excavated nearby. The exhibition is limited in scope, but is nevertheless sobering and quite moving – and the authorities have classified the building as a monument of public interest.

Address: Praça Infante do Henrique, Lagos

9 Lagos Live Science Center

The theme of this fascinating Live Science exhibition and cultural center is “The Portuguese Maritime Discoveries”, and it provides a fun and educational way to keep children happy and entertained, especially when the weather is cloudy and there is no beach to speak of. Portugal’s seafaring heritage is brought to life through a series of games, puzzles and interactive modules that bridge the gap between the discoveries of the past and present, and young people are invited to embark on their own journey of discovery. They can help crew a 15th-century caravel, or make an eye patch and join a pirate ship. Meanwhile, the submarine takes everyone to new depths of exploration.

The center is on the top floor of Lagos Market , so of course there’s a lighthouse you can visit, and kids can have loads of fun learning to use semaphore flags to send signals. All the while they learn more about navigation, communication and life on board different seagoing vessels. The concept is simple but hugely enjoyable and a team of enthusiastic multilingual staff are on hand to provide advice and answer questions.

10 Lagos Marina

Attractions in Lagos

Yachts and powerboats of all shapes and sizes dock at this premier dock, but Lagos Marina offers much more than just a safe haven for visiting watercraft. Anchored along the promenade are several very good dining options where customers can relax and enjoy the seaside atmosphere. In the evenings, some of these cafes host live music performances. Numerous coastal cruise companies are based here, offering everything from exciting excursions to the rock formations, sea caves and grottos around Ponta da Piedade to fantastic dolphin “seafaris” going into the bay. A swing bridge connects the marina with Avenida dos Descobrimentos , the city’s main street. The yacht basin with 462 berths is also within walking distance of the sweeping Meia Praia beach.

11 Church of Santa Maria-Praça do Infante D. Henrique

Attractions in Lagos

Linking dynamic perspective to Praça do Infante D. Henrique is the late 15th century Church of St. Mary . Located in the northwest corner of the square, the church still has a Renaissance gate, which fortunately survived the great earthquake of 1755. The building was renovated in the second half of the 16th century and significantly expanded in the 18th century, so what visitors see today is an interesting fusion of architectural styles. Inside is a statue of São Gonçalo of Lagos, a fisherman’s son born in 1360 who became a Saint Augustine. The square, embellished with water features, is named after Prince Henry the Navigator , who laid the foundation for Portugal’s maritime expansion in the 15th century and became governor of the Algarve. He sits, cast in bronze, on a plinth in the center of the hall. This is a wonderful area to relax in such noble company, but it is worth going to the Castelo dos Governadores to admire the beautiful manueline window in the facade.

Best things to do in Lagos

Boat tour along the coast of ponta da piedade  .

Three kilometres south of town is one of the most famous Lagos points of interest. The rocky headland of Ponta de Piedade is made up of golden cliffs that soar 20 meters into the air.

It’s genuinely one of the most stunning places I’ve ever seen, and admiring it from the calm waters of the ocean is the best way to get up close, and to experience the giant cliffs for yourself.

Several different boat trips leave Lagos, from catamaran to speed boat. One option is to take this boat cruise to Ponta da Piedade which costs around €20.

Board the little blue boat and you’ll be taken through the narrow archways and guided through slits in the cliffs to see inside these incredible sea caves.

Alternatively, you can also join a catamaran tour from Lagos to Ponta da Piedade . It’s a bit pricier, and the catamaran won’t be able to wind through the caves and arches of the cliffs.

But it will still be an awesome experience, as you’ll enjoy a bit of sailing along the coast on a more spacious boat, with the occasional swimming stop.

Kayak tour along Ponta da Piedade

Adventurous travellers who are looking for fun things to do in Lagos might want to consider joining a kayak tour of Ponta da Piedade.

An activity such as this kayaking and boat cave explorer tour gives you the chance to navigate this stunning slice of coast in your very own kayak.

The tour involves being led by a professional guide through the turquoise waters and into the caves, an even more thrilling experience than discovering it by boat!

The guide will be able to show you all of the interesting formations and hidden spots that you can access in a kayak rather than in a larger boat.

As you may have guesses, of all the amazing places to visit in Lagos, the yellow cliffs of Ponta da Piedade are totally at the top of the list. They’re a must-see on any Algarve itinerary .

Aside from by sea, another way to see the dramatic rock formations and the clear waters that surround them is by going on a walk on top of the cliffs themselves.

It’s a fairly straightforward hike to the cliffs along an easy to follow, well-trodden trail.

It takes about an hour to stroll along the cliffs, stopping off at the different viewpoints along the way – each more beautiful than the next.

You’ll also be able to see all of the small boats heading off on their various Ponta da Piedade tours. Make sure not to miss that adventure either!

Chill at Praia do Camilo

For those of you looking for some beautiful places to visit in Lagos, look no further than Praia do Camilo.

This small beach is made of glorious white sand, overlooked by gleaming golden cliffs and lapped by bright blue transparent waters.

It’s no wonder that this is one of the most beautiful beaches in all of the Algarve . It does get pretty busy here, however, so if you really want to enjoy your day at the beach, I think it’s best to arrive in the morning.

Beachgoers start arriving here at around 10AM, but the crowds really build around lunch time (when most people arrive).

You have to walk down 200 or so wooden steps to actually reach the beach, but that only adds to the stunning scenery.

One tip to keep in mind is not to place your towel too close to the water – when the tide comes in it’s fast and it comes in high up the sand.

Relax at Praia de Dona Ana

Another stunning beach and top tourist attraction in Lagos is Praia de Dona Ana. This absolutely gorgeous beach is less known than Praia do Camilo, but it’s surprisingly picturesque.

Praia de Dona Ana has the same crystalline waters, powdery white sand and picture-perfect golden cliffs, but has the bonus of being bigger, so there’s more space for the crowds to spread out.

It’s also a nice place to enjoy spending an afternoon with plenty of bars, restaurants and other eateries scattered around the area. The amenities are also good, with sunbeds and umbrellas available for tourists to rent.

Explore Lagos town centre

The historic center of Lagos Old Town is one of those places in Lagos that simply cannot be missed. The laid-back town center is full of interesting historical sites, with cobbled streets and atmospheric old squares.

Take some time to explore the warren of back streets and get a glimpse of life away from the busy tourist centre. There’s a long list of cute bars and local restaurants where you can stop off and enjoy a bite to eat along the way.

It’s also a good spot for picking up some souvenirs, thanks to the collection of lovely little shops dotted both along Lagos Marina and around the white cobbled lanes.

Enjoy the delicious seafood cuisine

Foodies cannot overlook the delicious seafood that’s on offer in Lagos. Being located right on the coast, the town’s numerous eateries are packed full with freshly caught fish.

Exploring some of the best local eateries around the city (many of which are in the centre) is definitely one of the top things to do in Lagos.

Go on an excursion to Benagil Cave

Benagil Cave is an absolutely fascinating sea cave located around 200m from Benagil Beach.

The huge cave has two entrances, including an enormous circle in the roof where light streams in, but it can only be accessed via the water. Taking a kayak, SUP or boat tour is pretty much the only way to see it.

It’s not actually in Lagos, but it can easily be reached on a day trip as it’s located about a 40-minute drive from Lagos. As such, it’s still considered one of the top places to go in Lagos.

It was one of the most beautiful places I visited during my Portugal itinerary , and I can highly recommend it to everyone. But make sure to join an early morning guided tour, so that you can avoid the huge crowds!

Most of the tours begin at Benagil Beach. I have listed below some of the most popular tours online, so that you can choose whether to explore Benagil Cave by kayak, SUP or boat.

Check out prices & availability for your Benagil Cave kayak tour in the calendar below!

Relax at Praia da Marinha

Praia da Marinha is one place that you simply cannot miss.

Visiting this award-winning beach is absolutely one of the most popular activities in Lagos – after all, it is one of the most famous beaches in the world, and a must-see on any Portugal itinerary !

Made up of powdery-white sand, with crystal-clear emerald waters lapping the shore, it sits on a backdrop of 50-metre-high cliffs.

It’s a really famous beach and because of that, it does get busy here. You should expect a lot of people; and as the tide comes in, the space on the sand gets smaller, which makes it feel even more crowded!

It’s better to arrive earlier in the day so you can make the most of your time here and find some space to lay down your towel.

Hike the Seven Hanging Valleys trail

The 12-kilometre Seven Hanging Valleys trail begins at Praia da Marinha, passes along the coast by Benagil, and runs all the way to Praia de Vale Centenaes.

The route takes in some of the best places to visit in Lagos and is well-known for its sweeping views along the coast and out over the sea.

If you want to embark on the whole trail, it’s best to get up early so that you have enough time to enjoy the views and complete the hike.

Along the way, you’ll have chance to view the famous Benagil Cave from the hole in its roof, and pass by scenic spots such as the “Heart of the Algarve”

Go on a dolphin watching boat trip

The Algarve is famous for its glistening turquoise seas and crystal clear water, but there’s also a whole world of marine life that thrives just off of this section of Portugal’s coast.

Shoals of dolphins can be spotted in the Algarve in the warm summer months, and it’s amazing to see them in their natural environment.

There’s a selection of tours that take people dolphin-viewing trips, one great option being this dolphin watching tour with marine biologists . The trip leaves from the Marine de Lagos and takes you on a one-and-a-half-hour ride in search of wild dolphins.

The group is accompanied by a marine biologist who helps identify the dolphins, interprets their behaviour and will also be collecting data to help with the conservation of the dolphins.

Head over to Sagres for some surfing…

Portugal’s western coast is a well-known hotspot for surfing, but the small town of Sagres is where it’s at for the best surf in the area.

This chilled out surfer town is only around a 30-minute drive from Lagos, but once you’re there you’ll be greeted by a choice of beaches for catching world-class waves.

Even if you’re not a keen surfer, the beaches themselves are super pretty and worth a trip from Lagos for the day.

And if you want to learn how to catch a wave, there’s a number of local surf schools in the area that will be more than happy to show you the ropes!

… And stay in Sagres for sunset

There’s no better way to finish up a day soaking up the sun and surf in Sagres than to watch the sunset. The beautiful Cabo de Sao Vicente is one of the best places in town to see the sun slip below the horizon.

Head up to the Cabo de Sao Vicente headland, the rocky section of cliffs topped with a lighthouse affords fantastic views out across the sea to watch the sunset.

Just make sure to bring a jacket, as it can get pretty windy up there.

A bonus is the food trucks that park up around the area so you can grab a bite to eat and a drink to accompany your sunset viewing. Perfect!

Do you need travel insurance to visit Lagos?

After my personal experience spending two nights in a private hospital in Tenerife, and having to pay for it out of pocket (it wasn’t cheap), I always recommend getting travel insurance .

You might not end up needing it, but for a small fee you can travel without worries. Personally, I suggest getting your travel insurance with  Heymondo .

Heymondo offers tailor made travel insurance, providing the best value for money for your specific trip. You can also buy it once you’re already abroad and have forgotten about it before flying (which, if you’re anything like me, is quite likely).

Besides the usual cancellation, medical expenses, luggage coverage and general travel insurance services, Heymondo also has a 24/7 doctor chat and instant assistance through their app.

Plus, as a Greta’s Travels reader, you get 5% off your Heymondo travel insurance !
