After lunch, you have the option to rest or explore several points of interest. Our Thimphu itinerary starts with a visit to the Memorial Chorten, where golden spires glisten in the sun and tinkling bells accompany the constant flow of elderly individuals circling the structure. Built by Ashi Phutsho Chodoen, the royal grandmother, in memory of her son, the third king Jigme Dorje, this monument houses an elegant collection of Buddhist statues and serves as a hub for the intricate teachings of tantric Buddhism.

As we ascend gradually to the Dochula pass, which stands at an impressive altitude of over 10,300 feet, in a clear day we are greeted with breathtaking views of the majestic Himalayan range.

At the Dochula pass, we encounter the Dochula Monastery, also referred to as the Druk Wangyal Khangzang Chortens. This magnificent structure, inspired by the Queen, consists of a unique cluster of 108 Chortens that can be viewed from every direction. It stands as a tribute to the exemplary service and leadership of His Majesty the king.

The descent from the pass to Punakha is a treat for the senses, as the landscape unfolds in different colors. Fluttering prayer flags enhance the surroundings, highlighting the richness of the topography beautified with terrace farming and flowing rivers.

Option A : Later, we have the opportunity to explore the Punakha countryside by foot, traversing the picturesque paddy fields, until we reach the village of Pana. Here, we can visit the revered ‘Chimi Lhakhang,’ a temple constructed by the renowned Lama Drukpa Kinley in 1400 to subdue local demons. This temple holds great significance as a pilgrimage site for Bhutanese people, particularly women who respect it for its reputed fertility powers.

Option B : After enjoying a delicious lunch, we proceed to witness the historical Punakha Dzong. This grand fortress lies at the junction of the Phochu (male) and Mochu (female) rivers. Shabdrung Nawang, the respected figure, built the dzong in 1637. It serves as the winter residence of the head general, Je Khenpo, and the administrative headquarters of the district.

If time allows, we can embark on a day hike to the Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Monastery ( OPTIONAL ). A short 30-minute drive from the Punakha Dzong brings us to the base of the hill where this remarkable temple stands. To reach the temple, we cross a suspension bridge and walk through rice fields before ascending a moderately inclined trail enveloped by lush pine trees. The hike to the temple takes approximately one hour, and the descent back to the car park takes around 30 minutes.

Afterward, we start our drive back into the countryside, heading towards the Thimphu valley.

Day3: Thimphu- Paro – local sightseeing

After breakfast, we retrace our steps back to Paro, where we continue our further Bhutanese tour. Our first stop will be the renowned Paro Dzong, also known as Rinpung Dzong. Originally built as a small fort in the 15th century, it was later transformed into a formidable fortress by Shabdrung Ngawang in 1646. This magnificent structure stands as an example of traditional Bhutanese architecture. In past, it served as a defensive stronghold, to throw stones at invading Tibetans. The dzong also have several captivating paintings, including a unique Bhutanese interpretation of a mandala, which represents the cosmos. As we bid farewell to this historic site, we will cross the Paro River via the Nyamai-Zam, a picturesque wooden covered bridge. Interestingly, during times of war, the bridge was pulled apart to protect the dzong from invaders.

Perched above the Paro Dzong, we will find its watchtower, called Ta Dzong. Constructed in 1649 to defend the vulnerable dzong, it was later converted into the National Museum in 1968. The watchtower’s distinct round shape is said to resemble a conch shell, featuring walls that are an impressive 2.5 meters thick. Inside, the museum houses remarkable collection of thangkas , both ancient and modern, depicting the revered saints and teachers of Bhutan. Additionally, you will find an array of awe-inspiring festival masks, organized according to their tsechu dances. The museum also offers a natural history gallery, complete with a three-dimensional map of Bhutan and a Heritage Gallery that showcases interesting artifacts like an egg laid by a mule and a horse horn attributed to Guru Rinpoche. Legend has it that there exists an underground tunnel connecting the watchtower to the water supply below.

Our next stop will be the Kyichu Monastery, a Buddhist temple in Paro that holds great historical importance. Built in the 7th century by King Songsten Gampo of Tibet, it is among the oldest monasteries in Bhutan . According to legend, a colossal demoness once obstructed the spread of Buddhism throughout Tibet and the Himalayas. However, with the construction of Kyichu Monastery, her influence was lowered. Here, we will have the opportunity to make a powerful offering by lighting butter lamps, symbolizing the illumination of wisdom. Just as a lamp removes darkness, offering light from a butter lamp signifies the eradication of ignorance, leading to the attainment of Buddha’s luminous and clear wisdom.

On the way to our next attraction, we will visit the ruins of Drugyel Dzong, witnessing the remnants of this ancient fortress. Following a delightful lunch, we will take a leisurely walk through the village, immersing ourselves in the local atmosphere. Paro’s main street stretches straight and exposed, with occasional residents leaning against the storefronts. This leisurely walk presents an excellent opportunity to interact with the friendly locals and explore the charming small shops that line the street. Alternatively, we may choose to visit other interesting points in the area.

One such place is the Dungtse Lhakhang, a unique three-story chorten-style building constructed in 1433 by the esteemed bridge-builder Thangtong Gyelpo. Legend has it that this structure was built on the head of a demoness who was causing widespread illness. While entering may or may not be permitted, we can freely explore the surroundings of this remarkable shrine.

Another attraction worth visiting is the Druk Choeding Lhakhang, which was built in 1525 by Ngawang Chogyel, an ancestor of Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyel and a prince-general from Ralung, Tibet.

Additionally, we have the opportunity to explore Jangtsa Dumgtseg Lhakhang, a temple that stands out due to its chorten-like structure, unique for Bhutan. Situated on a hill between the Paro and Dopchari valleys, this temple offers breathtaking views.

To gain further insights into Bhutanese culture, we can visit the Druk Home Museum, a charming private museum housed in a traditional Bhutanese house along the road to Taktshang. This museum provides a captivating overview of Bhutan, featuring festival masks, regional dresses and explanations of the hierarchy of the kabney (scarf). Additionally, the museum’s comprehensive display includes dried foods, herbs and even a bowl of Cornflakes! Don’t forget to indulge in local snacks and wine for a full experience.

Overnight in Paro.

Day 4: Hike to Taktsang Monastsery (Also Known as Tiger’s Nest)

After breakfast, we drive for approximately 25 minutes to the base of Ramthanka to start our hike to the famous Taktshang Lhakhang, also known as Tiger’s Nest Monastery . This sacred site is perched on a sheer rock face 3000 ft above the valley , offering breathtaking panoramic views. As per legend, Guru Rinpoche arrived here on a tigress’s back and meditated in a cave, which later became the monastery. For reasonably fit person this hike takes about 2 to 3 hours uphill and 2 hours returns, following well-maintained trails. There is option to hire a horse for those who are not able to hike.

After the trek, you can opt for a traditional Bhutanese hot stone bath to relax and overcome various ailments (additional cost).

Day 5: Departure

As per your departure flight time from Paro, usually in the morning, our representatives from Mosaic Adventure will escort you to Paro International Airport and bid Good-bye and pleasant flight back to next destination.

Day 1: Kick start the trip, Paro to Thimphu

Arrive at Paro International Airport and buckle-up for one of the most scenic drives of your lifetime as you travel from Paro to Thimphu.  The mesmerizing mountains and flowing rivers will be your companions throughout this journey. Day 2: Marvel at the Regal Architecture of Thimphu

This magnificent structure houses a large chapel. The upper body of the monument is filled with over a lakh smaller statues of the Buddha. After a hearty lunch proceed to the Takin Mini Zoo, a wildlife reserve area for takin, the national animal of Bhutan. Day3: Experience the esoteric side of Bhutan in Punakha

Make your way to Punakha to appreciate the esoteric shades of the Bhutanese culture. Your first excitement of the day—Dochula Pass. Just 45-minutes from Thimphu, this mountain pass is located at an elevation of 3100m, offering breath-taking views of the Himalayan range. Find yourself amazed at your next stop, Chimi Lhakhang or the fertility temple built in 1499. According to the local tradition, childless women go to the temple to receive blessings or empowerment from the saint- Drukpa Kunley.

While in Punakha, visit the Punakha Dzong, the administrative centre of the district. It stands majestically on an island between the confluence of the Pho Chhu (Male) and Mo Chhu (Female) river and is one of the most photogenic of all of Bhutan's ancient fortresses. The Dzong joins the mainland by an arched wooden bridge and houses many precious relics of the previous monarchs.

Day 4: Trace your steps back to Paro

On the final stopover of your journey, enrich your knowledge of Bhutanese art and history, at the National Museum of Bhutan. It houses 3000 pieces of art covering more than 1,500 years of Bhutan's cultural heritage. Let the day roll and arrive at Kyichu Lhakhang, one of the oldest temples of the city. It is believed that this temple was built in 659 to subdue a demoness residing in the area. The story may just be a local legend, but the incredible architecture of the temple is pretty legendary itself.

At the end of the day, reward yourself with a trip to the neighbouring brewery for locally produced beer and its popular variants before retiring to your hotel for the day.

Day 5: End your holiday 3000 feet high!

Treat yourself to a delicious breakfast and head to the magnificent Tiger’s Nest Monastery or Taktshang Goemba. This beautiful monastery is perched precariously 3,000 feet above the valley floor, with a winding stairway lined with strings of colourful prayer flags leading up to it. It’s a fairly steep uphill climb, but the serenity and beauty of the complex will leave you mesmerised.

For a peek into the life of the people of Bhutan, make your way to a local farmhouse, meet the locals and sample some home-cooked delicacies. You could also try your hand at Bhutan’s national sport – archery; deck-up in Bhutan's national dress (gho and kira) and gulp down some Ara, a local beverage made of rice.

When in Paro, take a moment to stop and shop for souvenirs from the local stores. There are 13 traditional arts and crafts that Bhutan is particularly proud of that you will be able to admire and even bring home. Local markets in Paro also have an interesting selection of woven cane and bamboo products, as well as deities and artworks carved out of wood, stone and clay.

Note: If you are in Paro in March, be a part of the spring festival — Paro Tshechu. Monks, locals and tourists dress up in traditional attires and masks, and dance. Don’t forget to collect prayer flags here.

A 5-Day Bhutan Itinerary and mini Travfor 2023

This is an account of my first independent trip outside the country. I am sure it will inspire you to visit Bhutan and plan a perfect 5-day Bhutan itinerary.

I knew that this all-girls trip to Bhutan would be memorable for more than just one reason. My first adventure in the Himalayas, my first tour with friends and the first stamp on my passport. These 5 days in Bhutan was like going back to the simpler times. 

On our 8-hour journey from the border town Phuentsholing to Paro, we could not hear any honking. Coming from India, to the closest neighbor, this was a culture shock. Another impressive thing was how rooted they are to their culture while being progressive at the same time.

This trip to Bhutan seemed like a time travel to the period that our parents often talk about. When people were much closer to the nature around them. The time when kids played on the streets without their parents being fussy and overprotective. Bhutan seems to live at that time when people were less worried about the future and enjoyed the present. For the old-world dreamer that I am, the tour was really the much-needed break from the modern mundane life of ours.

Did you know Bhutan is the only carbon-negative country in the world? Which means this tiny land-locked Himalayan country absorbs more CO2 than it produces!! If we aid them with money, let’s not be too proud of it because Bhutan aids the world with Oxygen.

A Quick Outline

Day 1: Bhutan Itinerary

Enter the land of the thunder dragons.

It was a surprisingly warm day for February when we reached Hasimara at 1 p.m. After immigration formalities and lunch at Jaigaon, we set off for our 8-hour long journey to Paro. It is a beautiful town in the Paro valley that is home to hundreds of legends from the Bhutanese history.

We were not aware of then was that it was a special day in the Bhutanese calendar. According to their tradition was the Day of Offering, similar to the Thanksgiving day of the US and Canada. We were welcomed with a warm reception given by the proprietor of our hotel. He told us about this day which is celebrated as Buelwa Phuewi Nyim – the Traditional Day of Offering.

Day 2: Bhutan Trip Itinerary -Exploring  Paro

Rinpung Dzong – Magnificent architecture of Bhutan

At this point, I would like to pause and put a note on Dzongs. Loosely translated as “fortresses”, the Dzong architecture is typical to the Buddhist kingdoms of the Himalayas.

Every valley of Bhutan has at least one Dzong which is considered to be the most elegant building and a trendsetter for all the building architecture in that area. Every Dzong has an administrative part and a monastic part which are separated from each other. Bhutan homes the world’s oldest and most spectacular Dzongs, each of which is an architectural wonder.

We then visited Ta Dzong- the national museum of Bhutan situated on the hill above the Rinpung Dzong. It was built as a watchtower during the wars of the 17th century to defend the Rinpung Dzong. The place took us on a memorable journey through the history of Bhutan, its rich cultural and faunal diversity. Outside the gate of the Dzong, we met a little Bhutanese girl who couldn’t understand a  single word that we spoke but stuck around us while we posed for photographs.

Our last destination for the day was the Kyichu Lhakhang monastery, one of the oldest shrines of Bhutan built in the 7th century. This holy place is famous for a pair of evergreen orange trees that bear fruits throughout the year.

Day 3: Bhutan Itinerary – Tiger’s Nest Trekking

This turned out to be the highlight of our 5 days in Bhutan. A 3-hour hike to the famous Taktshang Lhakhang, more commonly known as the tiger’s nest.

It is one of the most sacred sites for Buddhists all over the world. Perched atop the cliff 900m above the floor of the Paro valley overlooking the Paro river, trek to the Tigers’ nest was a rough thrilling path inlaid with thick vegetation all around.

It was my first Himalayan trek. I was zealously climbing the rocks despite not being in my best health. On the way, there is a small Lakhang (a small village level monastery) and a temple. This is a viewpoint from where the copper-colored rocky mountain looks like the face of a demon.

One of the locals we met during the trek told us about this. There is a cafeteria on the path below this viewpoint for tourists and travelers to relax a bit.

Crossing a few more hurdles and difficult terrains on the way we finally reached the place to find out that the monastery was closed for lunchtime. However, the waiting time in the monastery came as a  blessing in disguise. It allowed us to enjoy the chilly breeze on the warm sunny day, amidst the sound of waterfall and chirping of birds all around.  

We spent our time chewing on snacks and chatting among ourselves as well as with the other travelers from different parts of the world. Some of them visited for religion while some simply for the joy of trekking. Once again I was touched by the warm, jovial nature of the Bhutanese. They climbed the hills like it was a cakewalk and offered help to others in every possible way. 

The monastery comprised eight temples each of which housed hundreds of mystical stories. Legends hold that Guru Rinpoche arrived here from Tibet on a tigress in the 8th century.

He meditated in the caves for three years, three months, three weeks, three days and three hours. The monastery was first built in 1692 around those 13 caves but was destroyed in fire twice. The reconstruction was completed in 2005.

One of the disciples in the monastery spoke to us about the various legends associated with the place and took us to each of the temples.

We were awestruck at the architecture and the stories encompassing the mystical caves. The thrill and wonder of this amazing place made me forget the pain in my ankles and we returned with our hearts filled with awe at the mystery of the land. Read more about Tiger’s Nest Trek .

Day 4: Bhutan Itinerary – Paro to Punakha

Dochula pass – one of the best sights in bhutan.

We then drove our way to the enthralling Dochula Pass, the famous pass between Thimpu and Punakha that gives a 360-degree panoramic view of the Himalayan Range. The pass is decked by 108 chortens known as Druk Wangyal Chortens built opposite to the temple Druk Wangyal Lhakhang. The snow-covered Himalayan mountains provide the perfect backdrop to this picturesque location.

Punakha Dzong

Our next stop was the Punakha Dzong, the second largest and second oldest Dzong of Bhutan built at the confluence of Pho-chu and Mo-chu rivers on the Punakha- Wangdue Valley.

This majestic building stood the test of time and was rebuilt and restored its past grandeur by the present King, after being destroyed four times in the past due to fire and earthquake. This is the  Dzong where the royal wedding of the present King of Bhutan took place in 2011. 

We were standing before a temple inside the Dzong listening to the mystical chants when all of a sudden we heard the cries of some monks and found some of them rushing out of the temple with canes in their hand hitting hard on the grounds.

For a moment we were stunned and fled like a bunch of terrified kids. But soon we discovered that it was a part of an annual ritual that is performed at this Dzong, and felt lucky to have witnessed it.

Chimi Lhakhang – An interesting place in Bhutan 

Our last destination for the day was Chimi Lhakhang- the fertility temple located on a hilltop in the farmlands of Punakha.  It is believed that couples who don’t have children get their wishes fulfilled when they worship at this temple.

We reached the temple through the dusty road with lush green fields on both sides. The evening puja was going on, and an occult ambiance was created inside the temple. A guide was depicting the various legends associated with this temple.

It was about how a demoness camouflaged to fool the Lama Kunley but was ultimately identified and subdued.

Lama Drukpa Kunley was a monk who preached Buddhist philosophy in form of simple tales and was known as the “Divine Madman” for his unconventional ways- a personality that we can very easily relate to the Indian Hindu saint Sri Rama Krishna.

The temple is decked with frescos and statues depicting the legends associated with it. Outside the temple were two Shivlings, a huge Peepal tree and colorful flags fluttering in the pleasant breeze.

The mountains far away shimmered like gold during the twilight as we made our way downhill back to the cab. We stayed overnight at a small hotel at Wangdue.

Day 5: Trip to Bhutan – Sightseeing at Thimphu

Our last day at Bhutan was dedicated to the capital, Thimphu that exhibits a unique juxtaposition of modern developments with the ancient traditions.

Born in the lap of the Wang-Chuu valley, Thimphu is the abode of the historically and politically important buildings. It is the center of economic and government activities of Bhutan.

We started off from our hotel at Wangdue at 8.00a.m. and drove through the scenic Dochula pass to reach the Thimphu valley. 

Thimphu Chorten – Iconic Landmark in Bhutan

Our first destination for the day was the National Memorial Chorten. It was built in 1974 by the then Queen in memory of her royal son, who is popularly accepted as the Father of modern Bhutan. Also known as the Thimphu Chorten, it is considered to be the “most visible religious landmark of Bhutan”. The frescos and statues inside which gives an insight into the Buddhist philosophy.

Changankha Lhakhang

We visited the Changankha Lhakhang, a fortress-like temple standing high amidst the ruins of its past splendor, where young children in Bhutan are named.

Established in the 12th century, the temple houses a splendid statue of Chenrezig with 11 heads, a group of three large prayer wheels and rare scriptures. The courtyard of the temple provides an amazing bird’s eye view of the Thimpu valley.

We then reached the Buddha Point, a place at an elevation of 300 ft above the Wang-chu riverbed where stands the grand bronze statue of Gautam Buddha under construction, known as Buddha Drodenma.

Thimphu Dzong

On our way to the Takin preserve, we caught a glimpse of the one of the most important Dzong of Bhutan, the Thimphu Dzong which has served as the seat of Bhutan’s government since 1952.

The pompous beauty of the Dzong thrilled us, but we came to know that the Dzong is open to visitors of for 1 hour from 4 pm to 5 pm, after the flag is pulled down ceremoniously. So, we went past the Dzong and arrived at the Motithang Takin preserve that is a safe abode of the national animal of Bhutan classified under “vulnerable” species.

It is the largest and sturdiest goat antelope in the world that can be found only in and around Bhutan.  Takin was declared the national animal of Bhutan in 2005. This place was originally a mini-zoo but was converted into a reserve where the animals could roam about freely.

The rare animal was seen living in harmony with other herbivores in the open space of the reserve.

​Day 6: Trip to Bhutan | Goodbye to the world’s happiest country

So this was officially our last day in Bhutan. We packed our belongings and set off for our last drive through the Himalayan country. As we made our way to Hasimara, our heart was full of gratitude for the people of Bhutan. Etched in our minds were the priceless memories to be cherished for a long time ahead.

The flight to Paro is an experience in itself. On a clear day, you can see the majestic Mt. Everest and other Himalayan peaks. As you fly close to the Himalayan range, you can feel the awe-inspiring beauty of the Himalayas. Once you land in Paro, you will be greeted by our representative and transferred to your hotel.

The journey to Paro is truly breathtaking and captivating. The views of the majestic Himalayan range, the lush green valleys, and the snow-capped peaks are simply mesmerizing. As you descend into the valley of Paro, you will be rewarded with stunning views of the Paro Dzong, the Ta Dzong, and the Paro River. Upon arrival, you will be transferred to your hotel and can explore the city.

After breakfast proceed on to visit Thimphu Valley and transfer to Punakha later in the afternoon:

Take a journey to the stunning Trashichhoedzong or Thimpu Dzong, a medieval fortress and monastery. Inside, you will find most of the country’s government offices and the King’s Throne room. It is also home to the summer residence of Je Khenpo, the Chief Abbot.

Afterward, head to the National Library which contains a large number of ancient Buddhist texts and manuscripts. Then, drive to the Arts & Crafts School, renowned for its traditional thangka paintings. Here, you will be able to observe students as they craft intricate designs on cloth.

Next, visit the Textile and Folk Heritage Museums, a captivating display of Bhutanese material culture and living traditions. Following lunch, head to the Handicrafts Emporium, where you will find an array of hand-woven and crafted products. Then, make your way to the Memorial Chorten, a Stupa built in memory of Bhutan’s Third King, who is widely known as the Father of modern Bhutan. After having breakfast, visit Punakha Dzong, a fortress and religious center constructed in 1637 by Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal at the junction of the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers. This historical building has undergone four devastating fires and an earthquake but has been fully restored. Afterward, drive to Wangdiphodrang, a district known for its bamboo products, slate, and stone carvings. Stop at the local market and Dzong before having lunch and heading to Paro.

On the way, make a short stop at Dochula Pass and then visit the oldest fortress of the Kingdom, Simtokha Dzong, which was built in 1627 and now serves as the School for Buddhist Studies and well-known Chhimi Lhakhang – Chhimi Lhakhang, also known as the Fertility Temple, is located in Punakha, Bhutan. The temple was built in 1499 by the “Divine Madman”, Drukpa Kuenley, a renowned Bhutanese saint. The temple is renowned for its unique collection of phallus paintings and statues, which are believed to bring fertility and ward off evil spirits. The temple is a popular pilgrimage site for childless couples who come to seek blessings for a child.

After breakfast, embark on an excursion to the Taktsang Monastery, the most renowned of Bhutanese monasteries. Legend has it that Guru Rinpoche arrived here atop a tigress, which is why it is known as the “Tiger’s Nest”. The journey to the monastery and back takes about five hours.

In the afternoon, visit the Ta Dzong, Bhutan’s National Museum. Originally built as a watchtower in 1967, it now houses a captivating collection of art, artifacts, thangka paintings, and the country’s exquisite postage stamps. Finally, take a stroll down the trail to Rinpung Dzong, a historic site with an intriguing past.

I was taking part in a volunteering / touring break in Nepal for 2 weeks and I wanted to visit Bhutan before I headed back to the UK as I have heard wonderful things about the country. I contacted Himalayan Tours for an itinerary and price and they got back to me within hours with an itinerary and price which included visa, flights, hotel, guide, and the itinerary I was after. Anup and his team answered all my queries immediately through email and I decided to book the 3-day tour. I met Anup at the hotel I was staying in Kathmandu at the beginning of my time in Nepal and then later when he gave me the visa and paperwork. I had only paid him for my flights back to the UK and 30% of the trip so I thought it was very trusting of him to organize everything without me having to pay the whole amount up front and only once I received the paperwork did I pay the rest of the money owed. ACCOMMODATION & MEALS 

Accommodation: Accommodation is typically provided in twin rooms in cities, though a single supplement can be requested for an additional fee. During peak season, it can be difficult to find single or twin rooms in the mountains, so our lodges usually offer dormitory-style accommodation. VISA REQUIREMENTS

Nepal Visa: If you are planning a trip to Nepal, you must have a valid passport and Nepal Visa. Depending on your country of origin, you may need to obtain a Nepal Tourist Visa before your arrival. To be eligible, your passport should be valid for a minimum of six months from your Tour Start Date. If you are planning on traveling to multiple countries on your trip, make sure to get a multi-entries Nepal Visa.

Bhutan Visa Clearance: All visitors to Bhutan must have a valid Bhutan Visa Clearance before their trip. To obtain it, you must submit a color-scanned copy of your passport, which must be valid for at least 6 months from the start date of your tour. Your tour operator will send you a Visa Clearance prior to your departure, which you must present at the Druk Air/Bhutan Airlines counter during check-in. Once you arrive at Paro Airport, your passport will be stamped with the original visa.

Tibet Group Visa (TGV): All travelers from any nation intending to go to Tibet from Nepal must obtain a Tibet Group Visa (TGV) in Kathmandu with the help of a tour operator. To ensure the successful application of the TGV, you should plan to arrive in Kathmandu 3-4 working days before your travel date. If you are coming from China, you will not require a TGV; instead, you will need a Chinese Visa and Permit. To find out more about the process of entering Tibet, please look into the Tibet entry procedure.

BEST TIME TO VISIT 

Nepal & Bhutan: Visiting Nepal and Bhutan at the same time is ideal as they share a similar climate. From high mountains to low land sub-tropical plains and jungles, the two countries have similar weather. The best time to visit is from March to April (spring) and October to December (autumn and early winter). During these months, the air is clean and fresh with sunny skies. January and February are colder months, while June, July, and August (summer) are typically monsoon seasons.

Tibet: It is best to visit Tibet between April and October when the weather is warm and the skies are clear. However, from November to March, it is still possible to explore certain areas like Namtso, Everest Base Camp, and Mount Kailash, as long as the roads are not blocked by snow. Temperatures during this time may be quite cold.

Day 01. Paro – Thimphu (Arrival)

Day 03.Thimphu –Punakha

Then the road descends through lush forests to the fertile valley of Punakha & Wangdi Phodrang.

• Hike to Paro Taktshang Monastery, the most famous and scared monastery in Buddhism world. Taksang means “TigerNest” named after Guru Rinpoche reportedly flew to this site riding on the back of a flying tigress late in the 9th century. The trail climbs through beautiful pine forest, many of the trees festooned with Spanish moss, and an occasional grove of fluttering prayer flags.

1. When and how to visit Bhutan?

Choose your traveling date like Arrival/Departure date. You also need to choose entry/depart Bhutan via AIR or LAND.

By Air: Druk Air, the national carriers is the only service operator in the kingdom and operates several flights per week from Bangkok (Thailand), Delhi & Kolkata (India) and Kathmandu (Nepal) to Paro (Bhutan). The Paro International Airport is located about an hour and a half drive from Thimphu, the capital city of Bhutan.

Paro airport is daylight restricted, and the flights are totally dependent on the weather. As a result, sometimes flights are delayed. It is therefore a good idea to keep at least 24 hours of transit time for connecting flights out of Paro. You might also want to consider traveling on a non-restricted ticket so that if you miss a connecting flight, you can be rerouted or seated on the first available carrier.

Sometimes flights into Paro are disrupted because of unfavorable weather conditions. If this occurs, the flight will stop for the night at the transit airport. To be prepared, you may want to carry your essential personal items in your carry-on luggage.

By Land: Phuentsholing, a Bhutanese town in the southwest has road access to India. It is located about 170 km from the Indian domestic airport at Bagdogra, West Bengal. Phuentsholing is about 172 km from Thimphu the capital city of Bhutan and is about 6hours drive distance. And S/

Hot stone bath (Dhotsho) is a traditional bath of Bhutan, where a tradition of heating up stones and then soaking in the water that is in turn heated by the stones. This is also a curative method and is used throughout the country We Bhutanese belief that this bath has so much of medicinal benefits. Some diseases are curable-like joint pains, hypertension, stomach disorder, arthritis and many other minor diseases. Folk Performing Arts & Music in the Himalayan Kingdom of Bhutan We have Cultural Program Performing groups, which they will perform like Traditional folk songs, dances and keeps original tunes and dances alive. Moreover, new choreography for some traditional and regional songs is sometimes developed.

The troupe also performs mask dances that have historical and spiritual significance.

The program will be about 1hr program and the cost will be USD 100/program. Usually we organize this in the evening before your dinner. But any time of the day can be organized.

It takes about 2 hrs 30mins up steep climb through the forest of pine, oak and Rhododendron. However you can ride the horse and climb till the Taktshang cafeteria.

Morning – We drive to Punakha via Dochu La pass. On the way, visit to:

• 108 stupas at Dochu La pass (3140 m) and enjoy the view of the higher Himalayas . The spectacular Druk Wangyel festival is held here on the 13th December every year.
• Botanical garden at Lampelri where the annual Rhododendron festival is held in spring.
• Chimi lhakhang (The temple of fertility) built in the 15th century by Lama Drukpa Kuenley , “The Divine madman”. 

Afternoon – visit Punakha dzong built in the 17th century by Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal.

Drive back to Thimphu.

Day 3. Thimphu sightseeing – Paro | Altitude: 2280 m | 56 Km | Drive: 1 hour.

Morning sightseeing includes:

• Postal museum where you can print your pictures on the official Bhutanese stamps.
• Tallest statue of Buddha Dordenma in the world at Kuensel Phodrang (51.5 m).
• Changangkha lhakhang , one of the oldest temple of Thimphu built in 13th century. This monument is also the main highlight of honeymoon in Bhutan .

Afternoon, drive to Paro valley and visit to:

After arrival at the Thimphu airport, the agent’s representative will meet and greet you. The representative will head you directly at the 3-star Hotel Amodhara for accommodation. Relax for some time in the hotel room before we will take you to explore the local sightseeing. At first, we will take you to the Memorial Chorten. This architectural marvel is also known as Thimphu Chorten and looks like other stupas of the world. Beings located in the Doe Boom Lam, it doesn’t enshrine human remain but you can delve yourself in the tradition and culture of Bhutan along with some Buddhist representations. National Library is another must stop for bookworms. Since 1967, it is promoting and preserving the sacred texts and history of Bhutan.

After savoring the delectable breakfast, gear up to set to explore the local sightseeing of Thimphu. At first, we will take you to Buddha Point, where you can witness the largest Buddha Dordenma Statue of the world with a height of 51.5 meters. This statue is placed at the Kuensel Phodrang Nature Park atop the hill and gilded with bronze and gold. You can seek peace in this scenic haven or can cherish the time with your kids. Then, you will be unwrapped at the famous Bhutan Textile Museum. Since 2001, it sustains in promoting the art of weaving of Bhutan. You can pick many textile books from the museum shop. As it is located close to the National Library, you can make a visit there too. At night return to the hotel for sound sleep.

Paro: Arrival and Sightseeing

Enroute, we will give you a pit stop at the gorgeous Shaba River Point to have a look at its breathtaking beauty. You can also make a visit to the nearby village; interact with the villagers to get familiar with the tradition and culture of Bhutan. After completion of all check-in formalities at the hotel, we will take you to Rinpung Dzong. It is the oldest Buddhist monastery founded in 1644 by Drung Drung Rgyal. It is the perfect example of Bhutanese architecture and a famous tranquil spot that will refresh your mind and soul. Shopping is also offered at the localities (own expense) and return to the hotel for peaceful sleep.

After the piping hot breakfast at the hotel get ready to set out to visit the most enthralling Chele La Pass on the penultimate day of the Bhutan tour. This place is completely for the adventurists and is bound to delight your kids as well. From here, you will be able to enjoy the sacred mountains- Jomolhari and Jichu Drake. Itineraries

Kathmandu – paro flight, drive to thimphu (55 km drive).

After completing all Bhutan Visa and documents in Kathmandu, we fly to Paro having spectacular Himalayan scenery. If the weather is clear, we can see the top of the world, Everest (8,848m) and more silver mountain Peaks. We meet our guide in Paro and drive to capital city of Bhutan called Thimphu. The distance from Paro to Thimphu is 55km, takes 1 hour and 15 minute drive by private transport. At first, we drive south part to Pachu River and pass through the villages of Bondey, Shaba and Isuna and cross the bridge. We will see the Tschogang Lhakhang “the temple of the excellent horse” which is a private temple built in 15th century. Later, we reach to Chuzom and the trail follows Wangchu River passing through the villages and reach to Thimphu. After checking hotel, we visit Buddha point Memorable choden Traditional School of arts & crafts and Tashicho Dzong and around Thimphu city today.

Thimphu – Punakaha (77 km drive)

After breakfast, we drive to Punakha from Thimphu, along with the National Highway and pass the Dochu La pass having 108 chortens with dramatic Mountain View. Dochu La Pass is one of the most attractive pass in the world located on lush green hillside which tells the story about Bhutan culture, history, bravery and spirituality. If the weather is clear, we can observe amazing Himalayan peaks such as Masaganang (7,200m), Kangphugang (7,170m), Tsendagang (6,960 m), Jejegangphugang (7,158m), and Terigang (7,060 m) from Dochu La Pass. After crossing Dochu La, we drive downhill through rhododendron, hemlock, fir forests and more drive towards rice field along with River banks and reach to Punakha. Punakha is the administrative headquarter of Punakha Dzongkhag district of Central Bhutan. In Punakha, we visit Punakha dzong the second oldest dzong in the Bhutan built in 1637 in middle of the Male and female river by the spritual leader Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyel, Chime Lhakhang. The Dzong is a six stored structure with a beautiful Himalaya background. It was the seast of Bhutan government unitll 1955 before the capital was transformed to Thumphu. We also visit the longest suspension bridge of Bhutan, spanning over Mo Chu River.

Punakha – Paro

After completing Phunkha sightseeing, we drive back to Paro, where we landed two days before. First we drive to Thimpu via Dochu La Pass and again more drive to Paro via beautiful local villages, Rivers and terrace fields. Paro is the historical town having having many holy tour destinations. It is one of the attractive valley of whole Bhutan and it was the most important trade center with Tibet in historical period. Paro valley spreads the Paro Chu and Wang Chu Rivers and Mt. Tiger Nest Monastery is also known as Taktsang Monastery which is one of the popular and historical tour destination situated 15km north of Paro. It is said that, Guru Rimpoche (Padmasambhava) flew to the site of the monastery on the back of Tiger from Tibet and meditated in the cave in 8th century 3 years, 3 months, 3 weeks, 3 days and 3 hours to get for peace and enlightenment that offers spectacular greenery view of Paro valley. When to visit Bhutan?

If you want clear skies and photo opportunities then the best time to Bhutan is from October to December. In this season you can see the rare black-necked crane in Phobjikha valley.

January-February is colder. If you like this climate, it is suitable for you. You will not feel cold because this season is all about Lhosar. Lhosar celebration will keep you warm.

Arrive paro – sightseeing and drive to thimpu..

Drive Thimphu To Punakha 2:30 Hr

You will start your journey from Thimpu today. Today you will cover the distance of 75 km. This journey will take you to Punakha. You will visit the National Library today.It is a symbol and collection of rich cultural and religious heritage. This library preserves ancient manuscripts. It is a matter of pride for Bhutanese people. They love their history, culture, and religion. A huge stupa is here standing straight in the memory of the third King.You should also visit painting school. This school also preserves traditional art. You can also visit Handicrafts Emporium. Drive back to Paro

Sightseeing to paro, Hike to Taksang Monastry -4 Hour

After your breakfast, you will hike to Tiger’s Nest. Paro Taktsang which is also known as Tiger’s Nest is the most famous tourist destination of Bhutan.Almost every tourist visit this place. It will take you 4-5 hours for a round trip. You will take 1 hour for the tour of Monastery itself. The hike starts from the bottom of the mountain. Paro Arrival

Soon after you arrive at the Paro International Airport, you will be received by the Swan Tours representative who will further accompany you on a drive to Thimphu that is your first destination in Bhutan. Soon after you get transferred to Thimphu, you will enter the hotel where you are dropped and check-in the same for an overnight stay in the capital city of Bhutan.

Thimphu to Punakha transfer

After having the early morning breakfast, you will be visiting the Thimphu valley, TashichhoDzong, that is the amazing monastery housing the most of Government offices and King's Throne room. From here you will visit the National Library having a good collection of ancient Buddhist manuscripts and texts. Post the daytime spent well, you will be transferred from Thimphu to Punakha and check-in the pre-booked hotel and stay overnight after dinner!

Punakha / Wangduephodrang / Paro

Soon after having the morning breakfast, you will start off a drive for reaching PunakhaDzong, followed by a drive to Wangdiphodrang visiting Dzong and local markets where you can find a lot of bamboo products slate and stone carvings. Post lunch, you will set out on a guided drive to Paro. On arrival in Paro, you will carry out the check-in formalities and stay overnight after having dinner!

Paro local sightseeing

Post the early morning breakfast, you will depart for the guided sightseeing tour in Paro's exotic places that are worth the visit and attention. Proceed to the Taktsang Monastery that is also known as the Tiger's Nest that consumes 5 hours of your day, followed by a visit to Ta Dzong that is The National Museum of the Kingdom and the RinpungDzong that is both a Buddhist monastery and fortress. After the day comes to an end, return back to the hotel and stay overnight.

Departure from Paro

Eat the morning breakfast and start with the packing for checking out of the hotel and proceed to the International airport in Paro followed by an end to the 5 Days Bhutan Package .

For first-time visitors, you're suggested to focus on the icons of each country to fit them all in within a limited 14 days. These include India's Golden Triangle (Delhi, Agra, and Jaipur), Kathmandu in Nepal, and Paro, Thimphu, and Punakha in Bhutan.

Itinerary 1: 14-Day India, Nepal and Bhutan Highlights

• Delhi–Agra–Jaipur–Kathmandu–Thimphu–Punakha–Paro

This itinerary is ideal for first-time visitors who want to see the most of these three countries that is possible in 2 weeks. It would start from India, where you could experience the typical chaotic life of Delhi, encounter the timeless Taj Mahal, and explore the Pink City of Jaipur.

From there, journey back in time as you visit the ancient Kathmandu Valley in Nepal. Finally, conclude your trip in Bhutan, exploring the splendid dzongs (fortress-monasteries), admiring the scenery at the foot of the Himalayas, and trekking to the iconic Tiger's Nest in Paro.

Days 1–6 in India (Delhi, Agra and Jaipur)

• Day 1: Arrival in Delhi
• Day 2: A one-day Delhi tour to Chandni Chowk, Jama Masjid, Qutub Minar, and Humayun's Tomb.
• Day 3: Delhi to Agra (4 to 5 hours): Agra Fort and Mehtab Bagh
• Day 4: The Taj Mahal, the Itimad-ud-Daulah; by road to Jaipur (5 hours)
• Day 5: Jaipur highlights—Amber Fort, Hawa Mahal, Panna Meena Kund, and a cooking class
• Day 6: Nahargarh Fort; drive to Delhi

Your India exploration would start with a classic Delhi tour . Take a rickshaw ride to the iconic Chandni Chowk (market), discover the largest mosque, Jama Masjid, and enjoy some peaceful hours in the first garden tomb, Humayun's Tomb.

Continue your trip to Agra in the following 2 days. Upon arrival, take a guided walk inside the Agra Fort and unveil the secrets behind its majestic buildings. Then enjoy some tranquil moments with your loved one(s) as you watch a lovely sunset view at the Mehtab Bagh opposite the Taj Mahal.

The next day, visit the Taj Mahal at sunrise for better photo opportunities and a more peaceful vibe. Listen to the love story, appreciate the elegant inlaid artworks, and take the best snapshots in front of the Taj Mahal. Afterward, delve deeper into the exquisite Itimad-ud-Daulah, known as "the Baby Taj".

Before flying to Nepal, soak in Jaipur's Pink City vibe . In the "gateway to Rajasthan", take a jeep up to the hilltop Amber Fort, take a rooftop drink with views of Hawa Mahal, and explore the best-restored stepwell, Panna Meena Kund. Then cook and taste real Jaipuri food together with a local family. A panoramic view from the Nahargarh Fort is not to be missed.

Days 7–8 in Nepal (Kathmandu)

• Day 7: Fly to Kathmandu, visit Kathmandu Durbar Square and Swayambhunath Stupa
• Day 8: Patan Durbar Square, Pashupatinath Temple, and Boudhanath Stupa

You could immerse yourself in the diverse Nepalese religious cultures and medieval temples in Kathmandu.

Meet a living goddess (Kumari) in Kathmandu Durbar Square, witness Hindu funeral rituals at Pashupatinath Temple, walk around the Boudhanath Stupa clockwise, and spin the prayer wheels at the hilltop Swayambhunath Stupa at sunset.

Days 9–14 in Bhutan (Paro, Thimphu and Punakha)

• Day 9: Fly to Paro, then go by road to Thimphu and visit Buddha Dordenma and Memorial Chorten
• Day 10: The highlights of Thimphu: Tashichho Dzong, Folk Heritage Museum, and Bhutan Post Office Headquarters

Paro is the only gateway city for international air travel to Bhutan, so you would fly from Kathmandu to Paro first and then transfer to the capital, Thimphu.

In Thimphu , you would explore Bhutan's largest Buddha statue— Buddha Dordenma, witness Bhutanese circumambulate around the Memorial Chorten, and have an unaccompanied stroll at Tashichho Dzong, where Bhutan's King lives. Most impressively, have customized stamps made with your photo on them at the Bhutan Post Office Headquarters.

Then transfer to Punakha . You would see excellent views of the Himalayas at the Dochula Pass. If you're traveling in late March or early April, you would see stunning mountain views bedecked with colorful azaleas.
