New Zealand / Aotearoa

Unspoiled  New Zealand  – glaciers, rainforests, lakes and snowy peaks. Visitors come to experience our awe-inspiring scenery, to search for adventure, to seek out relaxation and rejuvenation, or just to breathe our pure mountain air. The South Island has some of the world’s finest scenery. New Zealand was one of the last places in the world to be settled by man and it still retains a rugged, incomparable pristine beauty. On the West Coast see the spectacular Franz Josef and Fox Glaciers and the Punakaiki pancake rocks and blowholes. Lake Wanaka’s spectacular location at the foot of the Southern Alps with the wilderness of the Mt Aspiring National Park nearby. Queenstown is known as the adventure capital of the world. The North Island is known for its volcanic activity, national parks, wine growing regions and cosmopolitan cities. It’s home to about three-quarters of New Zealand’s population. The Coromandel is renowned for it’s beauty: an outdoor haven where rugged terrain is contrasted by an idyllic coastline. The laid back culture, locally known as ‘Coromandel time’, encourages a relaxed atmosphere.  Rotorua is famous for its exciting geothermal activity including geysers and mud pools. It also has a prominent Maori culture and a thriving adventure tourism industry.

Enjoy friendly Kiwi hospitality, superb scenery and terrain that will delight cycle enthusiasts – knowing that each evening, there is a comfortable lodge and excellent cuisine awaiting you.

bike tour auckland

One of the most fascinating countries in Asia.

CLIMATE – Vietnam has a remarkably diverse climate because of its wide range of latitudes and altitudes. In Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) the average annual temperature is 27°, but temperatures in the low 30° are common and humidity high. The best time to cycle between Hanoi and Saigon is from November to March. The Far North of Vietnam is best in October to mid-December and March to May

VISAS – All nationalities require a visa. There is now an option to obtain a permit on arrival which can be applied for online. There are many online agencies such as www.myvietnamvisa.com  who offer the visa on arrival service.

TIME ZONE – Vietnam is seven hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (15 hours ahead of Los Angeles, 12 hours ahead of New York, 5 hours behind NZ). Because it is so close to the equator, Vietnam does not have daylight saving time.

CURRENCY / MONEY EXCHANGE – The currency of Vietnam is the Dong (d). in denominations of 200d, 500d, 1,000d, 2,000d, 5,000d, 10,000d, 20,000d, 50,000d and 100,000d. Coins have more recently been introduced, having denominations of 500, 1,000, 2,000 and 5,000d. It is not possible to exchange Vietnamese Dong outside the country so convert or spend all your Dong before leaving. US currency is readily accepted at most tourist shops and hotels. Carry small denominations, as they may not have change in US$ for large denominations. Other major international currencies may be exchanged in the bigger towns and cities. There are ATMs in large cities. Most of the hotels we use offer exchange services at a reasonable rate. Major credit cards are widely accepted in cities and tourist centres, but not in villages and small towns.

MEALS – We provide breakfasts, lunches and dinners, except for rest days at Dalat, Nha Trang and Hoi An. Meals are typically Vietnamese cuisine.

TIPPING – Tipping has become more of a norm and is now generally expected. Providing that the staff have provided excellent service, we suggest that each guide is tipped US$4 per day and other team (e.g. drivers) are tipped US$2 per day. This cost should be split across the group. Please remember that the standard of living in Vietnam is vastly different from your home country, and the US$ goes a long way in the local economy. For a person who earns US$100 per month, a US$1 tip to a porter or waiter is very reasonable. Please be discreet when tipping – we suggest placing money in an envelope before presenting it to guides or drivers. It is considered proper to make a small donation at the end of a visit to a pagoda, especially if the monk has shown you around.

YOUR TOUR GUIDE – Will be a local Vietnamese with good knowledge of the country and the route, and fluent in English. It may take a short while to tune in to his accent. Drivers will not speak English.

DRESS – Dress conservatively – this is practical for mosquitoes and sun and not just for cultural sensitivity. You may not be allowed to enter some pagodas or temples with bare shoulders or brief shorts.

CYCLING SAFETY – Traffic drives on the right in Vietnam, although it is not unusual for motorcycles to travel against the flow of traffic! There are few road rules in Vietnam. (or at least, few that appear to be obeyed) Be particularly careful of children playing on the road and wandering livestock. Watch out for big potholes, especially after heavy rain. Two-wheeled traffic (cycles and small motorbikes) is very heavy in the towns and cities. Take extra care at intersections, but at the same time, be assertive.

We drive out of busy cities and towns before commencing cycling.

bike tour auckland

  • Czech Republic

A journey amongst the Gothic castles and spires of beautiful Prague, medieval cities and impressive castles as we cycle along quiet country roads through gently rolling hills.

CLIMATE – The best time to visit much of the Czech Republic and Austria is in May or September when the weather is mild, and the crowds have thinned out.

Most residents take their holidays in the summer months of July and August, and Prague can be busy then. During the summer season, the weather in Czech / Austria is mostly pleasant and sunny ( up to 20C in September), but rain is not uncommon, especially when approaching the mountains in Austria. Be prepared for all types of weather to ensure that your trip is an enjoyable one. VISAS – A visa is not required by European passport holders, American, Canadian, New Zealand, Australia and Japan passport holders for visits of up to 90 days

TIME ZONE – Like the rest of Continental Europe, the Czech Republic is on Central European Time ( i.e. Greenwich Mean Time plus one hour). Clocks are moved forward for daylight saving time from late March to late October.

CURRENCY – The official currency of the Czech Republic is the Czech crown (koruna). The Czech crown is the best and often the only possible currency to use when paying. Although the Czech Republic is part of the European Union, the euro is not widely accepted here yet. Some stores, restaurants and hotels accept payments in euros, but the exchange rate may not be very good. Major credit cards can be used to obtain local currency from money machines (ATMs or “ bankomat”) which are found in every town. Mastercard and Visa are the most widely accepted credit cards.

TIPPING AND SERVICE CHARGES – Tipping is common practice for good service in Europe. 10% is typical.

MEAL – All breakfasts and most dinners are included.

MAPS / ITINERARY – Map and Route Description are included.

  • lizab2004 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Best way to see Auckland We had only 24 hours in Auckland; the bike tour was an excellent way to get a taste of this beautiful city. We covered a lot of ground! Carson made sure we rode safely and our route was mostly on bike paths and bike lanes. Having his commentary through the earpiece was a great addition. The e-bikes were super powerful and got us up the hills with relative ease. Highly recommend this tour! Read more Written 19 April 2024
  • Wanderer798044 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Such a great tour! Such a great tour! We went with my husband and one more person. Carson was was a phenomenal tour guide, who gave us quality instruction and guidance throughout the trip. We felt safe and the stops were informative. He gave us lots of picture opportunities. Excellent e-bikes, very easy to navigate. History, nature, water and lots of fun! Definitely would recommend for anyone in town Read more Written 31 March 2024
  • sandcCdA 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles A wonderful way to tour Auckland and we'd do it again! Matt was our leader. The ebikes were so easy to get us up the hills in this hilly town - with just a touch of the thumb. We biked up to the top of Mount Eden - highest point in the city, around the waterfront and beautiful parks. Matt gave us each an earpiece so we could all hear his commentary as we biked along. History, the sailing culture, geology and volcanoes, sports, and dining options of course. And the bike saddles were comfortable! Not always the case on similar tours. Read more Written 31 March 2024
  • Sightsee03824278262 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Great experience! Although it rained a lot during our tour, Eddie was very informative and made the trip fun. My husband and I liked that it was a small group (there were only 4 of us plus Eddie). He showed us around the city and the electric bikes were easy to use. I would definitely take this tour at the beginning of your Auckland stay as he provides some great recommendations during the tour and at the end. Read more Written 31 March 2024
  • Jademrgoes 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Loved this guided e-bike tour! Superb start to finish. Superb operation and guide! We are still raving about our guided Power to the Pedal e-bike tour with Eddie. It was a excellent way to get an orientation of Auckland before we joined a 21-day small group tour of both islands. Our guide, Eddie Jack (also owner) ran an excellent adventure from start to finish. He greeted us with a warm welcome, plan, and safety overview. Then he provided a good fitting and instructional test ride to make sure everyone was ready before venturing out. His e-bikes were in great shape and well suited for a mix of needs (i.e. a step-thru for me) and terrain that includes some inclines and starts and stops. He also provided easy-to-wear functional headsets so he could talk us through both points of interest (history/culture) as well as how to safely navigate intersections and inclines by utilizing features on the bikes that suited our abilities. We could hear him well throughout! His route and selected stops were well-timed and informative. He exposed us to much more of the city than we could have covered by foot (or discovered on our own) through an excellent blend of roads, mixed pedestrian pathways, and other bike-friendly urban routes. We explored a good bit of the waterfront and made our way through parks and neighborhoods to and from the high point for a 360 view. His attention to detail through the wrap-up included providing a few photos and a copy of the route – great for "journaling" the experience. We appreciated his inclusive and attentive demeanor, attention to safety, and his whole approach to the experience. This was a model excursion for any such guided tour. • Deb H 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Great orientation to Auckland by e-bike! Eddie was a great tour guide/trip leader! We are in our mid sixties and felt safe as he was very clear with his directions and he let us know what to expect next as we navigated the bike lanes across town. Headsets and helmets were provided as was a place to store our bag/backpack on each bike. He gave a good orientation to our e-bike and safety procedures and provided time to get accustomed to it before we started out. We should have taken this trip at the beginning of our visit to Auckland as he was very knowledgeable about the neighborhoods we biked through as well as New Zealand history. Thanks Eddie for a fun adventure! Read more Written 18 March 2024

Exceptional! Highly recommend. Small group ebike tour of Auckland. The ebikes and helmets were well maintained. Eddie had us wear headsets so he could give us directions, keep us safe, and share lots of info. Very informative and professional. He took lots of photos to share with us. Great overview of Auckland and New Zealand on our 2nd day. We are mid 60s and fit but sure needed that pedal assist and turbo climbing to the top of the dormant volcano. Plus enjoyed an iced coffee and yummy donut at the meeting place before. Sign up now!

Great Experience! Great Guide-Carson! & Great Electric Bikes! Fabulous Bike Tour! Best way to capture the highlights of Auckland!! I've traveled and taken several bike city tours in different European countries and for sure this was one of the best! From the start I could see that Carson, our bike guide was going to provide a great tour! His attention to safety, explaining bike riding paths to avoid the hectic city traffic and then sharing all the areas we be riding around in Auckland. This was my first time on an electric bike and Carson ensured we test ride and comfortable with handling the gears (now I'm thinking of buying an electric bike-fun!). The electric bikes made it very easy to navigate the hill top roads of Auckland. Off we went and Boy!! we biked through so many areas/neighborhoods of Auckland including hilltop vistas- Mt Eden and harbor side port areas. At the end, captured the essence of Auckland- fantastic!! We met Carson, guide at the starting point (Pullman hotel) across the street from Albert Park. Well maintained bikes are stored in the garage. Carson provides helmets and water. Carson even staged to take photos as a group and individually several times during the bike tour- that was a treat! He also pointed out areas to check out for eateries and browsing. Carson was passionate about providing a great experience! Another plus emailed video of bike tour path. One of the best highlights of my travels through New Zealand for sure!!!!

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED - ESPECIALLY if you're new to the city or first time visitors. It should also be noted that using these bikes do not require you to be Tour De France Lance - the bikes do 99% of the work for you. You can also pedal them old-skool to get a workout if you must. Eddie (the owner) is a really helpful, down-to-Earth fellow. He knows a ton about the city and will give you maps and directions and anything else you may need to know. My husband and I rented bikes for a solo ride from one day and the next day we came back and went on the night tour. While you're on tour, Eddie will take you to the highest point in the city which really helped us get the lay of the land and sense of direction. He also will take you through some cool spots to eat/drink, shows you local attractions and also gives you some way-cool history tidbits about the city. As an added bonus: he will stop and take free action shots of your group (which, in my case, found me looking like an out-of-shape silly man/child), but if you're photogenic, you'll really appreciate them. We were BLOWN away by how fun and easy touring this hilly city on an electric bike is - especially at night. I am seriously thinking of buying one of these bikes for me at home because I had so much fun. I can't recommend this place enough, but I don't recommend taking any bike (electric or otherwise) by yourself on your first run unless you're used to electric bikes. Here's why: 1. Auckland has A LOT of construction going on right now - very easy to get lost like I did, despite all of the maps Eddie gave us. 2. Lots of hills. If you don't have expertise on getting the bike to do the work for you, you're gonna be frustrated. You'll have buff legs, but you'll be frustrated. 3. You probably don't know your way around Auckland - neither does your "smart" phone due to construction. See #2. 4. Traffic + Construction + Not knowing the city + Being an American driver = Tad Scary. Anyway, Eddie will give you tons of info and maps to help you along, whichever option you choose. We learned a lot and will be back!

Sometimes it's all about the journey and sometimes it's the little stops along the way that make a ride the best thing since sliced bread. In the concrete playground we call Auckland there are two things that all great rides involve: swimming and eating. Pump up your tyres and convince a mate to tag along, you'll wonder why you don't ride more often. On yer bike, here are eight of the best bike rides in Auckland.

Northwestern Cycleway

No points for guessing where the Northwestern Cycleway will take you. The full cycleway is 9km long but I'd take the entrance just next to the Bond Street bridge on the Kingsland side to begin your journey. After you've finished a hearty and healthy breakfast at Monday's in Kingsland, head towards Bond Street and veer right and down the hill just before you reach the bridge.  You'll head alongside the motorway and up past Unitec before crossing the water and riding up towards the Te Atatu Peninsula.

This ride is a perfect Sunday go-slow outing with friends but is also very family friendly so bring the little ones along, it could even be the perfect way to spend some quality time with the little ones in your family who you never quite manage to see enough of.

Great stops along the way include The Waterview Coffee Project , a cafe in a shipping container just a few minutes off the track on Daventry St. Once you're over the waterway stop in for lunch at The Luscious Food Store - a gem of a cafe that sources locally grown produce and organic meats where possible.

Divert at Great North Road to head towards the Avondale market for a Sunday morning of bargain hunting at one of Auckland's favourite markets.

Te Ara I Whiti - Lightpath

It's the talk of the town, you either love it or hate it but either way you probably can't deny that the pink path makes your commute from Upper Queen to Downtown just that extra bit fabulous.

Although everyone knows it as 'the pink path' its given name is Te Ara I Whiti, which translates to the Lightpath. Not only does its bright pink flooring light up the city but it has interactive lights that run the distance of the path.

This one's great to impress the kids and to get them excited about cycling, it's also Auckland's most ambitious cycle path to date so that's a fun fact for them to share with their classmates - to be honest though, they are probably more hyped by the fluorescent pink than anything else.

Now, of course, I'm not one to promote unsafe riding but the pink path makes a great space to practice some handsfree riding, it will be just like you're Rose from Titanic , except you're not on a ship and Leonardo DiCaprio probably doesn't have his arms wrapped around you.

If you've got friends from far away places spending some time in Auckland, why not hire a city bike and take them on a night out. Start at Upper Queen and make your way down the pink path and carry on the cycle path to Silo Park for night markets and food trucks.

waiheke2

Waiheke Island

Auckland's favourite weekend getaway spot is also a great spot to go riding. One of the best ways to experience Waiheke Island is with friends and there's no better way to explore than on two wheels.

Jump on the ferry with your bike at no extra cost, or hire a bike once you hit land and step onto the wharf. I wouldn't recommend taking your trendy fixie. Despite the fact that I still don't understand how you ride around the steep streets of the city, I can assure you, you won't have much fun when those hills are also gravel. Hiring a bike means you'll get all the comforts of a mountain bike and can have a trusty little map mounted to the handle bars, how's that for convenience?

There are also great maps available to help you find your way around and if you plan out your day in advance you can make sure to take the right paths to lead you to wherever your heart desires, be that an art gallery, beach or vineyard. The 'Beach/Wine Lovers Trail' will take you about three and a half hours through the vines to Onetangi and once again is one of those rides that can end in a swim if you so desire. Further rides include the Easy Life Loop, Nature Trail, Stony Batter Trail and the Rangihou Mountain Bike Track.

Dominion Rd - Onehunga - Mangere Bridge

Riding down Dominion Road is an experience in itself, I can't think of better way to take in all of the sights and smells and scout for your next cheap dinner. Make your way down one of Auckland's favourite strips and head towards the motorway where you will ride alongside the frustrated drivers and down to the Manukau Harbour. From there and after a mandatory dip in the ocean, head across the bridge to Mangere and along the water's edge all the way to Ambury Farm Park. Or of course you can always finish at Villa Maria if that's more your kind of reward.

This ride is definitely a must-do and a favourite among the city's riding community. If you are tired after this epic day out, you can always ride back to Onehunga and catch the train back into the city, I promise you won't lose brownie points.

If you are more into slow rides expending as little energy as possible while still feeling like you are working your body, this is not the ride for you.   Expect to work up a bit of a sweat.

Woodhill Forest

One for all the adventure seekers out there, for the daredevils who like to get down and dirty in the mud, who love to push themselves and who enjoy spending time in nature. Ok, so I may be amping things up a little, and yes, mountain biking can be all that, but it is as extreme as you want it to be.

Riding fast down steep hills in the forest and attempting not to break another bone is one thing, riding through the forest on a path that has twists and turns and the odd jump if you dare is another. Woodhill Forest caters for both and would have to be one of the most accessible selection of mountain biking tracks in the city.

This forest is the home of mountain biking in Auckland and this is the perfect way to spend a drizzly Auckland weekend. Spending all day riding in the rain is typically a fun thing to do, especially in the inner city with cars splashing even more water onto you, but mountain biking in the rain is a whole other ball game.

Check the Woodhill website for trail updates before you head out for the day.

Tamaki Drive

One of Auckland's trusty off-road cycle paths is the waterfront to Mission Bay path, another one for all of the romantic riders out there and great if you're planning on getting back into riding after years out of practice.

You'll pass people shredding along on roller blades, lovers walking hand in hand and kids attempting to eat their ice-cream before it melts in the summer sun.

A gorgeous ride at anytime of the day but certainly amazing at sunset after a hard day's work, with views out to Rangitoto and the harbour lulling you into a blissful state of denial. I'm sure your job isn't all that bad. A sunset ride is never complete without a healthy dose of fish 'n' chips on the beach at the end so this ride certainly ticks that off the list.

If you ever get the chance make sure you head along to one of the Bike Raves, hundreds of riders head along this very path in the dark on bikes decked out in whatever amazing lights they can find, the music pumping and dressing up is never frowned upon - good luck topping the Skyower helmet though, that was really something else.

devonport

Auckland CBD - Devonport - Takapuna

Another great weekend ride takes you from downtown Auckland across the ferry to Devonport and then on a scenic route to the Takapuna beachside.

You'll ride over boardwalks, bridges and through parks so pack a picnic and head out on a day when the sun is shining. This ride is definitely a summer gem, with beaches at both Devonport and Takapuna, you would be best to pack a towel and some togs, the urge to swim will most definitely be strong.

If you are needing inspiration for a bike date, you could always start your ride at Takapuna and plan to end up on North Head at sunset for a picnic dinner taking in the views out to the city. Who said bike rides can't be romantic?  Of course, the ferry ride isn't completely necessary but if you are heading from downtown Auckland or simply want to extend the ride then it's a great option.

If you think that these bike rides involve a lot of ferries I can assure you that not all of Auckland's best rides involve water transport. This one does. We live on an island, let's make the most of it.

tamaki1

Britomart - Half Moon Bay - Auckland CBD

This is one for the more adventurous rider, a ride perfect for inner city bike gangs and one of the epic missions you can only do on two wheels.

This is not a ride for the faint of heart, this is a long ride and will take you a fair few hours. It also may result in very sore legs the next day so if you aren't much of a rider you may feel parts of your body you've never felt before.

Head from Britomart along Tamaki Drive towards the aforementioned Mission Bay and basically just keep going. Follow the shoreline past St Heliers, along Riddell Road and take a left onto Roberta Ave once you get through Glendowie. Follow your nose - or the trusty Google Maps - towards Point England Reserve all of the way down to the water at Lagon Drive near the Panmure Basin. From there cross over the water and follow the shore line left all the way past the Pakuranga Sailing Club and down and around until you make to the Half Moon Bay ferry terminal. Yes that's right ALL the way around. Jump on the ferry and enjoy the sweet, sweet ride back to the city.

Like I said, this ride is not for the faint of heart. If you are still reading and thinking "yeah I could do that" make sure your phone is charged before heading out, Google Maps will be your best friend, as will water, food and stamina.

Good luck and enjoy your mission.

If you are one of those who prefer to know the cities you visit by pedaling, then in Auckland you will feel at ease, since its urban layout, its hills and its wide streets are the ideal place to make an excursion by bike, either through the old town or the outskirts of the city.

Some of the best things to see and do to get to know Auckland by bike include taking a half-day tour of the city's main attractions, getting to know the most picturesque neighborhoods on an express electric bike tour, taking a night tour with the assistance of a local guide, visiting Karangahake Gorge and pedaling along the city's beautiful waterfront.

During the tour you will be able to discover the best routes and landscapes and also some of the most iconic areas of one of the most visited destinations in New Zealand.

Among the attractions you can visit are the Waitemata Harbour, which is the departure point for Auckland cruises , Albert Park, the Parnell district and the SkyCity Tower . At the harbor, you will also have access to spectacular panoramic views of the city.

There you will come across fashion and art stores, as well as a variety of cafes and restaurants where you can enjoy delicious local dishes. A half-day bike tour is a great way to enjoy the main attractions in an active and healthy way. In addition, you can also opt for tours tailored to different levels of ability and interest, so you are sure to find an alternative that suits your expectations. How to book a bike tour in Auckland?

You can either book the tours in advance online or opt to book a bike tour directly when you are in the city, although you should be aware that if you plan to visit Auckland in December or during the summer months, being the peak season, you may lose your place on the tours.

Keep in mind that in New Zealand prices are dynamic, so if you book at the last minute you may suffer price increases and changes in the date and time you want to choose to make the experience.

What will I see on this type of tour?

You will be able to discover the main panoramic views of the city, especially during the tours along the waterfront or the natural sites on the outskirts of Auckland, but you will also get to know in depth the city center and the most picturesque neighborhoods, in a comfortable, simple and faster way than walking.

A bike tour will also be ideal if you have planned a short stay in the city, because you will be able to see a greater number of attractions in a better time. If that is your case, here is a list of activities you can do to discover Auckland in 3 days .

Tips for a bike tour in Auckland

In addition, you will learn more about the history and culture of Auckland, as during your tours with an expert guide, you will visit places of tourist interest, while enjoying a fun experience.

Finally, a bike tour will allow you to discover the natural beauty of Auckland while interacting with the city in a unique way. Are you up for a bike tour of Auckland?
