Biloxi Lighthouse

Ohr-O’Keefe Museum of Art

For those interested in art, one of the best things to do in Biloxi is to visit the Ohr-O’Keefe Museum of Art. Honoring Mississippi’s potter, George E. Ohr, this contemporary art museum is a work of art in itself.

Designed by artist and architect, Frank Gehry, the unique-looking buildings hold ceramics, photographs, paintings, and other mediums by American artists.

George E. Ohr was the self-proclaimed, “Mad Potter of Biloxi”. He experimented with clay forms, and he claims to have made over 20,000 pieces. When he passed away in 1918, he was mostly unknown, and his work sat in a garage for years. However, today he is viewed as a grandfather of the American Abstract-Expressionism movement.

The Ohr-O’Keefe Museum has a large permanent collection of his work, as well as rotating exhibits by other artists, and an artist-in-residence program.

The Salvation Army Kroc Center MS Gulf Coast

One of the best things to do in Biloxi with kids is to spend some time at the Salvation Army Krock Center. If it’s a rainy day but the kiddos still want to go for a swim, you can do so at this Biloxi community center.

You do not have to be a member of The Salvation Army Kroc Center to swim there! Simply reserve a swim pass, which allows for two hours of playtime. Swim passes cost $10 a person and children under two years old are free.

This small indoor water park offers fun for the whole family! In addition to the regular recreational pool, there are splash pads, a water slide, and vertical water sprays. The Salvation Army Kroc Center is a fun alternative to the beach if you have little ones.

Ship Island

To reach Ship Island, you can take the pedestrian Ship Island Excursions Ferry which leaves from Gulfport, Mississippi Small Vessel Harbor, and the Margaritaville Resort in Biloxi. The ride is about an hour one way.

Deer Island Coastal Reserve

11 Things to Do in Biloxi: Musts for Every Traveler

Biloxi was settled in 1699, making it one of the oldest communities in the country. With sugar-white sand beaches, incredible history, unparalleled gambling, and genuine Southern hospitality, Biloxi, Mississippi, is a perfect getaway or road trip destination. Here are 11 things to do in Biloxi to have an incredible time, featuring museums, family-friendly activities, and a few surprises. These are musts for every traveler.

1. Visit the Beach

Spend your day at the beach! Coastal Mississippi, has 62-miles of shoreline, accessible from pretty much anywhere along Beach Boulevard on Highway 90. Here you can splash in the Gulf of Mexico, work on your tan, enjoy a good book, or build picture-perfect sandcastles.

Make your beach day even more fun by renting a boat, bird watching, taking an excursion to Ship Island, kayaking, fishing, or taking a sightseeing cruise.

2. Explore the Mississippi Aquarium

One of the newest Coastal Mississippi attractions is the beautiful and unique  Mississippi Aquarium , offering many exhibits and displays outside verses in. Built on a waterfront 5.8-acre complex in nearby Gulfport, the aquarium habitats (salt and freshwater) house 200+ animal species and various native plants. Your ticket includes daily activities such as a croc talk, dolphin training session, aviary feeding, and “meet a biologist,” for example. 

What will you see at the aquarium? The North American river otters were my favorite residents, but you’ll also see birds, snapping turtles, crocodiles, stingrays, Atlantic bottlenose dolphins, and nurse sharks. Be sure to check online for the calendar of events, yoga, summer camps, and birthday party opportunities.

3. See a Baseball Game

Attend a Biloxi Shuckers Minor League Baseball game at the MGM Park and see the Double-A affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers in action. The Shuckers, playfully named for Biloxi’s oyster industry and heritage, play from May to September and are fun for the whole family. Tickets start under $10 and must be purchased online for the time being.

4. Stay in a Luxury Hotel

Step back to the golden era of Old Hollywood at the pristine Hotel Legends Biloxi. Conveniently located on Beach Boulevard (the main drag) and within walking distance to a few casinos, Legends Hotel offers 132 suites, an upscale restaurant (Sapphire Supper Club), free parking, complimentary Wifi, a fantastic infinity pool and deck, and onsite coffee bar.

You can wander the lobby and hallways to see the framed Hollywood legends, including Marilyn Monroe, James Dean, Clark Gable, and Ava Gardner.

My suite had two bedrooms separated by a living room area with a couch, desk area, and flat-screen TV. A wet bar area with barstools held a coffee maker and PJ’s coffee pods.

The bedrooms had sumptuous linens and really pretty rugs. I loved the decor, vibe, light fixtures, and special touches that make the hotel rooms extra comfy, cozy, and valued.

If you need more of a family hotel, we recommend the Biloxi Margaritaville Resort , home to the largest entertainment complex on the Gulf Coast, totaling 55,000 square feet. Margaritaville also has a pool with a swim-up bar, water slides, and a lazy river.

5. Tour a Historic Home

Visit The Jefferson Davis Home and Presidential Library, Beauvoir, a National Historic Landmark. Property highlights include the Library, House, rose garden, Tomb of the Unknown Confederate Soldier, and Confederate Soldiers’ Home Cemetery, where 780 veterans, wives, widows, and some of Davis’ family members are buried.

Beauvoir overlooks the Mississippi Sound and and was built in 1852 and would later become the home of Jefferson Davis, the one and only President of the Confederate States of America.

6. Learn at a Unique Museum

The Maritime and Seafood Industry Museum showcases 300 years of Mississippi Gulf Coast history, heritage, and culture. My favorite exhibit is the shrimp peeling machine, developed by a kid, and the hurricane exhibits and footage. The one-of-a-kind three-story building boasts nine exhibits and galleries. Stop by Monday through Saturday from 9 AM to 4:30 PM.

7. Indulge in Amazing Food

My best meal in Biloxi was from  Patio 44 , serving the most delicious Blue Crab Fondue you’ll ever taste. Pair your dip with a cold beer, swanky cocktail, or tasty glass of sweet tea. Don’t skip dessert—the bread pudding is sensational, though you may not be able to hold it if you order the shrimp & grits (gouda grits, I might add) as I did. Yummy!

Whether you are in the mood for Oysters, Shrimp, Crab Dip, Fresh Fish, Gumbo, or Crab Cakes,  The Reef Biloxi  has it all. Sitting on Biloxi’s beach, The Reef has the largest children’s menu on the Coast.

Another seafood favorite of ours is  Shaggy’s , a regional chain restaurant with ultimate dining locations and a darned good menu. Shaggy’s Biloxi sits on Biloxi Beach and has epic wings, gator bites, blue crab claws, and smoked fish dip, for starters. Bonus, you’re sure to have a great time at this fun establishment. 

TripAdvisor’s #1 rated Biloxi restaurant is  Half Shell Oyster House . With a New Orleans theme and laid-back atmosphere, Half Shell serves the finest quality of Gulf oysters (shucked in house all day) among a plethora of other dishes. We love everything we’ve tried from Half Shell Oyster Houses all over Mississippi. The Gumbo and Shrimp and Grits are both epic!

Lastly, the romantic restaurant with a prestigious menu to match is from  Mary Mahoney’s Old French House , a restaurant my husband and I dined at over twenty years ago and still have great memories of. From lump crabmeat remoulade and veal Antonio to escargot and lobster imperial, Mary’s Mahoney’s menu items are to die for. 

8. Browse an Art Museum

Chances are you will do a double-take when you see the incredible museum that looks like something out of an international magazine. The  Ohr-O’Keef Museum of Art  strives to promote and preserve the legacy of the Biloxi native, George E Ohr, master potter, and the diverse cultural heritage of Mississippi’s Gulf Coast.

Visit the stunning museum, designed by Frank Gehry, Tuesday through Saturday from 10 AM to 5 PM.

Probably the best thing to do in Biloxi, Mississippi, is to gamble, or at least it is my favorite. I love the robotic bartender at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino Biloxi, plus the remarkable rock and roll memorabilia around the hotel. If you are traveling with kids, they, too, will love this hotel, not for gambling, but for the Sugar Factory ice cream and sweets parlor.

Still, my favorite Biloxi gambling institution is the gorgeous Beau Rivage , offering great shopping, fantastic restaurants, and chintzy chic decor.

The Golden Nugget is another gambling Mecca, with slot machines and table games. Regardless of which casino you choose, you’ll most likely find all your favorite slots, table games, and then some. Table games throughout Biloxi casinos include Black Jack, Mississippi Stud, Pai Gow progressive poker, Poker, Baccarat, Craps, Roulette, and Texas Hold ‘Em.

10. Photograph the Lighthouse

Built in 1848, the Biloxi Lighthouse was one of the first cast-iron lighthouses in the South. This landmark has become the symbol of Biloxi, representing the city’s resolve and resilience. Take a tour of it from 9 to 9:30 AM daily, weather permitting.

11. Check Out Downtown Biloxi

Downtown Biloxi and the  District on Howard Avenue  has just had a fabulous facelift and houses some pretty great murals, art installments, and the Mardi Gras Museum, celebrating 100+ years of Gulf Coast Mardi Gras history.

Expect great coffee at  Jacked Up Coffee Bar  and a fantastic book selection, new and old, plus unique gifts and trinkets at Southern Bound Book Shop. For those who are looking for special things to do, try your hand at Skal Axe Throwing for the hottest sport around.

A Money Saving Opportunity

Coastal Mississippi offers a nifty attraction pass for saving big on local admissions. The  Attraction Pass  is one fee, heavily discounted, instead of paying standard fees at places like the Mississippi Aquarium, Beauvoir, Lynn Meadows Discovery Center, Ohr-O’Keefe Museum Of Art, Walter Anderson Museum of Art, Coastal Mississippi Mardi Gras Museum, and more.

Passes can be purchased for one, two, or three days of admissions and are mobile-exclusive, delivered directly to your phone via text and email. 

Biloxi: A Must-Visit Coastal MS Destination

Biloxi looks reslly charming. I would love to visit the lighthouse, always have a special love for lighthouses, as there is something so romantic about them. This one looks so sparkling and modern though. Margaritaville looks like a great place to stay and explore the place.

The lighthouse is very small but it's really cute. Margaritaville was fun but it is perfect for children!

I've never considered Biloxi but it looks cool! I would go just for that insane oyster platter! I love oysters. I've actually never been anywhere in Mississippi but I may need to change that!

Nathan, you should change that! Mississippi has a lot of cool smaller cities and towns, Biloxi being one of them. I was very surprised by how great Biloxi was.

I have never been to Biloxi, but I love all the things that you mention doing so I'm sure it would be a lot of fun. I would have to go mid-winter, though, because I'm not a fan of heat or humidity and Mississppi is full of that.

Corinne, I was really impressed with Biloxi. Yes, it does get quite hot in Mississippi so visiting in a non-summer season is a great idea!

Never heard of Biloxi before. I think I would like to spend my time at the beach , not far from a sea food restaurant. I am not fan of oysters but I am sure I would find a little fish which suits me (+ a white wine to wash it down)

Well if you're even in Mississippi you should stop by. It is wonderful!

Next up on our cross country road trip was Mississippi (state number 2 of the 50 states). Naturally, we headed over to Biloxi, which is the closest gambling destination to Atlanta.

A lot of our friends talked about their road trips here to hit up the casinos when they couldn’t make it all the way out to Vegas. Neither of us gamble much, but we couldn’t resist leaving at least a couple dollars in the slots. When in Biloxi, right?

Since casinos are the entertainment center in Biloxi, we decided to stop by Beau Rivage first. You can try your luck at this riverfront hotel and casino, but it that’s not your thing, it also happens to have a nice view of the gulf.

The casinos are definitely the main attractions in Biloxi MS. You can also check out Golden Nugget Biloxi or Palace Casino Resort as other options. And if you’re looking for a spot with things to do in Biloxi with kids, check out Margaritaville Resort. They have a lot of fun things to do including a lazy river, slides, and more.

2. Biloxi Lighthouse

1050 Beach Blvd, Biloxi, MS 39530,  map

This cast iron lighthouse was built in 1848 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. It was civilian operated from 1848 to 1939, and it special because it had a few female lightkeepers.

During Hurricane Katrina, a third of it was covered and a lot of the windows were broken. After a large restoration project, it reopened for tours in 2010. You can go on guided tours of the lighthouse each morning or just admire it from outside. It’s definitely worth stopping by and is one of the best Biloxi attractions if you’re a photographer. Be sure to check out the Biloxi Lighthouse Pier too!

3. Hard Rock Hotel & Casino

Enjoy everything rock and roll, whether you’re looking for a place to eat, try your luck at the casino, or just walk around to check out the hotel. If you plan on staying here, be sure to check out their pool that overlooks the gulf.

4. Harrah’s Gulf Coast

Harrah’s is another long standing casino in the Biloxi. It’s known for its 18 hole golf course and nice outdoor pool.

5. Hurricane Katrina Memorial

133 Main St, Biloxi, MS 39530,  map

Hurricane Katrina is one the worst natural disasters to his the United States and it definitely affected this city. Many of the towns hit hardest in 2005 are still rebuilding. This sculpture that represents the high water mark is dedicated to those who lost their lives during Hurricane.

It’s a quick stop and one of the best free things to do in Biloxi.

6. Coastal Mississippi Mardi Gras Museum

Learn more about Mardi Gras’ 300+ year history at this museum. You can check out memorabilia from the celebrations, costumes, photographs, and more.

7. Biloxi Beach

With 26 miles of beach that runs all along Beach Blvd, you’re sure to find a spot for yourself. The soft, white sand makes it a great place to relax on the shore or play in the water and the center for all things water. Plus it’s one of the best outdoor things to do in Biloxi. With most casinos and hotels lining the beach, you’re usually just steps away.

From April to October, the water is typically above 70 degrees making it really swimmable, so don’t forget your bathing suit! And if you’re looking for romantic things to do in Biloxi, go for a stroll during sunset.

8. Maritime and Seafood Industry Museum

Water is a big part of Biloxi’s history and present day. This museum not only covers the maritime history, but also the seafood industry, including shrimping, oystering, recreation fishing, and more.

9. Shrimping

Go on a real shrimping expedition out of the Mississippi Gulf Coast. You’ll learn about the history of shrimping in the area and how you catch shrimp. There are multiple outfits that do this and it’s best to get a reservation.

10. Ohr-O’Keefe Museum of Art

386 Beach Blvd, Biloxi, MS 39530,  map

Known as the “Mad Potter of Biloxi,” this art museum focuses on the ceramics of George E. Ohr. The O’Keefe name comes from Annette O’Keefe, wife of former Biloxi mayor Jeremiah O’Keefe Sr, who played a huge role in donating money and raising money to complete the campus.

There are five buildings on site designed by Frank Gehry, so even the architecture is worth visiting. You can even take pottery classes on site.

11. Have Mississippi Mud Pie

We made a quick pitstop for Mississippi mud pie at Palace Bakery in Biloxi. Yelp failed us for the first time, so do yourself a favor and don’t eat there. Eater says  Mary Mahoney’s Old French House  is where it’s at! We had a reader report back that it wasn’t available when they visited, so call ahead to see if it’s on the menu before you go.

Best months to visit.

The best time to visit Biloxi is from November to April, when the city's room rates are affordable and the weather cools off. The city's peak tourist season – May to mid-August – sees highs in just about everything: average temperatures peak around 90 degrees, humidity levels climb to about 75% and hotels inflate their prices to profit off of burgeoning crowds. The city becomes a ghost town starting in late August and continuing into September and October, when hurricanes can wreak havoc on the city.

What You Need to Know

It gets H-O-T This Gulf Coast destination gets very humid, especially during the summer. Drink lots of water, and try to stay out of the afternoon sun.  

Try the seafood Ignoring the local cuisine would be a shame. This city is home to a world-class crawfish festival, as well as shrimping and oystering industries.

The city has been revitalized Biloxi suffered severe damage from Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in 2010. It's worked hard over the years to recover, and offers many new and improved things to do .

How to Save Money in Biloxi

Budget, budget, budget Travelers heading to the casinos should decide on how much they're willing to lose – and avoid making trips to the ATM.

Pounce on promotions The casinos often offer deals and discounts on everything from buffets to spa treatments to accommodations. Pull up their websites' promotions page and compare to find the best offers.

Visit in the offseason Biloxi's offseason is from November to April, when the temperatures dip. It's during this time of year that room rates at the local hotels drop as well.

What to Eat

Thanks to Biloxi's proximity to the water, the city harvests and serves up plenty of seafood. Crawfish are a Southern specialty, and you'll find some of the best at the popular Taranto's Crawfish restaurant. Though it's situated about 12 miles northwest of the main tourist area, travelers say it's worth the trek to try the "perfectly spiced" crawfish, gumbo and po'boys. Mary Mahoney's is another highly regarded seafood stop that earns praise for its fresh fish entrees, friendly staff members and elegant but laid-back ambiance. If you're in the mood for oysters, experts and travelers alike say you have to head to the Half Shell Oyster House to try the various offerings (think everything from charbroiled oysters to raw oysters on the half shell to oysters Rockefeller). In addition to its spot on Lameuse Street (not far from Mary Mahoney's), the local chain, which has several locations throughout the South, also has an outpost in Hard Rock Hotel and Casino Biloxi .

If you're spending the majority of your time in the casino, you'll find an array of casual and fine dining options there as well. In addition to the Half Shell Oyster House, the Hard Rock is home to a Ruth's Chris Steak House as well as several casual eateries, including its namesake cafe. Meanwhile, the buffet at Beau Rivage earns high marks from recent travelers, as does Thirty-Two, a seafood and steak restaurant in the IP Casino Resort Spa .

2. Long Beach

Ancient, graceful oak trees, sparkling-clean beaches, and a vibrant downtown are what awaits you in Long Beach. The area is a favorite among anglers, though seashell and sea glass collectors will have plenty to keep them busy on shore.

4. Ocean Springs

The heart of the Mississippi Gulf Coast, Ocean Springs is spacious, picturesque, and brimming with creativity and culture. Renowned artists like Walter Anderson lived, worked, and were inspired by the natural beauty of the region, and today, there’s a nationally accredited museum in downtown Ocean Spring that’s devoted to preserving and honoring his legacy.
