Background [ ]

Clear Channel Entertainment announced the "Tour of the Mongoose" in September 2002. The tour came shortly after Shakira reached international success with her third studio album, Laundry Service (2001). During a press conference in New York City, Shakira summarized her show as an "entertaining rock show", stating "I'm not saving any effort to make sure that this concert [tour] will be the best I can offer to my fans. And it's going to have a strong spirit of rock and roll, so you will see a rock-and-roll show, but it will have all of the nuances and the subtleties of a show that attempts to entertain."

At the same press conference, Shakira explained the tour's name as symbolizing the strength of the mongoose, stating "...I was really impressed by it because it is an animal that can defeat the snake with just a bite. It's like a living miracle, this animal, to me, because if there's an animal on earth that can defeat the snake—a venomous viper—with a bite, I think that there's got to be some way for us to defeat, or to bite the neck of hatred in this world, no? "It's called the Tour of the Mongoose, and the mongoose is basically one of the few animals who can defeat the most venomous snakes with just one bite and that's why I decided to name my tour that way, because I think that if we all have a little mongoose inside that can defeat the hatred and the resentment and the prejudice of everyday, we can probably win the battle." At the tour commencement, Corey Moss of MTV compared the singer to Britney Spears , Tommy Lee , Elvis Presley , Sheryl Crow and Rage Against the Machine . The show sparked some controversy due to a perceived anti-war message in a video played prior to the performance of "Octavo Día", displaying war footage and later revealing the Grim Reaper to be a puppeteer.

Shakira dazzled at her Met Gala debut in a simple-yet-stunning red column dress with a slit that turned heads. For the wow factor: A dramatic long cape made with almost 100 meters of fabric that resembled a rose.

The sleek outfit with geometric cutouts was created by Carolina Herrera’s creative director Wes Gordon, who spent the past few months working with the Colombian superstar on the look, according to Vogue . The dress code for the event was “The Garden of Time.”

Tour of the Mongoose

Tour of the Mongoose (also known as El Tour de la Mangosta in hispanophone countries) is the third concert tour by Colombian singer and songwriter, Shakira , in support of her fifth studio album and first English album, Laundry Service (2001). It was the singer's first global tour, reaching North America, South America and Europe.

Controversy

Commercial performance, broadcast and recordings, external links.

Clear Channel Entertainment announced the Tour of the Mongoose in September 2002. [1] The tour came shortly after Shakira reached international success with her third studio album. During a press conference in New York City, Shakira summarized her show as an "entertaining rock show", stating, "I'm not saving any effort to make sure that this concert [tour] will be the best I can offer to my fans. And it's going to have a strong spirit of rock and roll, so you will see a rock-and-roll show, but it will have all of the nuances and the subtleties of a show that attempts to entertain". [2]

At the same press conference, Shakira explained the tour's name as symbolizing the strength of the mongoose , stating "...I was really impressed by it because it is an animal that can defeat the snake with just a bite. It's like a living miracle, this animal, to me, because if there's an animal on earth that can defeat the snake—a venomous viper—with a bite, I think that there's got to be some way for us to defeat, or to bite the neck of hatred in this world, no? "It's called the Tour of the Mongoose, and the mongoose is basically one of the few animals who can defeat the most venomous snakes with just one bite and that's why I decided to name my tour that way, because I think that if we all have a little mongoose inside that can defeat the hatred and the resentment and the prejudice of everyday, we can probably win the battle." [2] [3] At the tour commencement, Corey Moss of MTV compared the singer to Britney Spears , Tommy Lee , Elvis Presley , Sheryl Crow and Rage Against the Machine . [4]

The show sparked some controversy due to a perceived anti-war message in a video played prior to the performance of "Octavo Día", displaying war footage and later revealing the Grim Reaper to be a puppeteer. Shakira defended the video, stating, [3]

"I think that we see war as a virtual thing and we even get to believe that bombs fall on top of cardboard cutouts and stuff like that, they don't. They kill real people, real children, real mothers and millions of innocent people. I come from Colombia, which is a country that has been under the whip of violence for more than four decades, so I've seen the consequences of war and I've seen the psychological damage that it does in a society. And I think that we're never ready for war. I just feel that there are always pacifist solutions, and I think that the leaders know the exit to the conflict, it's just that sometimes they don't want to use them, they just want to continue playing their little game of power. And I feel that us people have the responsibility and also the obligation to demand to our leaders to give us the pacifist solutions. To give us a world in peace. I might be sounding like an old fashioned hippie, but I believe in pacifist revolutions and I think that we have to look for those solutions, otherwise there's no way to survive in this world. In the First World War, 13 million people were killed. In the Second World War, 40 million people were killed. I think that if a third war takes place, nothing is going to be left on the face of earth. 'Octavo Dia' talks about God when he created the world, the eighth day he went for a walk to outer space and when he came back he found our world in an infernal mess and he found that we were being controlled and manipulated by just a few leaders and that we were like pieces of a chess game. Not always do the governments represent their people. Not always do the governments make the right decisions, because the governments are controlled by just a few, and those few do not always represent faithfully the ideals of the people."

Shakira became the first Latin female artist to perform at Argentina's Estadio Monumental Antonio Vespucio Liberti (River Plate stadium), the sold-out show had over 60,000 people in attendance. [5] The concert in Santiago , Chile broke Luis Miguel 's record of most expensive concert tickets in the country due to Shakira's huge global popularity and high demand. [6] The show in Atlantic Pavilion, Lisbon has attracted 19,136 people which has broken attendance record holding by American rock trio R.E.M. [7] The tour was also going to be visiting the continent of Asia with stops planned such as: Tokyo, Hong Kong, Taipei, Manila, Singapore, Bangkok, Sydney and Melbourne, but this wasn't able to happen due to the 2002-2004 SARS outbreak at the time.

The tour was shot in Rotterdam, The Netherlands on April 22, 2003. The tour was chronicled on Live & off the Record . The disc included selected songs from the concert, along with a documentary showing the performer preparing for the show, her song writing process and her ideas about social responsibility. It also includes a live CD that features ten songs that were performed during the show. The CD spun off two singles, "Poem to a Horse" and "Whenever, Wherever Live". [8] In a special edition of Fijación Oral, Volume 1 the performances of "Fool" and "Dónde Están los Ladrones?" were included.

There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.

Met Gala 2024 after parties see Shakira, Kelsea Ballerini ditching gowns for stripped down styles

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

Stars wowed at the 2024 Met Gala on the first Monday of May as they walked the famous steps of New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art.

The theme was "Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion," with a dress code of "The Garden of Time" inspired by J.G. Ballard's story of the same name. After appearing on theme for the event, many stars opted for different looks for the after parties.

Zendaya wore a total of four different looks for the night, wowing onlookers first with a peacock blue gown and headpiece, followed by a black gown with a lengthy train and massive floral headpiece.

Inside, Zendaya switched to a plunging white V-neck gown studded with glitter, before switching to her final look of the night, a steely blue halter gown.

MET GALA 2024: RED CARPET ARRIVALS

Shakira went from a fiery red gown on the carpet to a white barely-there dress with major cutouts and a flowing train.

At Stella McCartney's star-studded after party, Shakira joined Matt Damon, his wife Luciana Damon, Rita Ora, Cara Delevingne and Penelope Cruz for a group photo.

"Euphoria" star Sydney Sweeney kept her black bob, but switched from her pale blue ball gown into a brown handkerchief top and matching pencil skirt.

Cardi B switched it up from a voluminous black gown – with a train that nearly swallowed the carpet and a tall head wrap – to a sleek red old-Hollywood look for the party she co-hosted with the brand, FWRD.

Kendall Jenner wore two different after-party looks, both white, in stark contrast to her dark Givenchy gown.

In one of her post-gala looks, she wore an ivory lace mini dress with matching heels. Her second ensemble featured a bright white corset bodice with wings, complimented by a flowing high-low skirt.

Rita Ora and Doja Cat pushed their already bold looks from the night even further for the after parties.

Ora swapped her beaded curtain gown for a mermaid-esque look, with a completely sheer top and large floral piece with beaded accents just covering her lower half, all paired with a white fur coat and wet hair.

Doja Cat swapped her own dripping wet red carpet look for a completely sheer body stocking look at nightclub tycoon Richie Akiva's birthday party.

The rapper also took a photo with singer Janelle Monae, who wore a wild, googly-eyed dress for the after party.

Kelsea Ballerini changed up her date night look with boyfriend Chase Stokes from a flowing, floral gown to a simple tan two-piece paired with an oversize blazer.

Lana Del Rey wore a similarly ethereal woodland gown for the ApresMet2 after party, but changed it up with a veil on the back of her hair, and lighter floral embroidery on the dress's bodice.

The "Born to Die" singer was also spotted hanging with Jaden Smith at the ApresMet2 party.

Lizzo went from her structured beige floral look, complete with unusual neckpiece, to a vibrant pink body suit.

She was joined by pal SZA as they attended the Casa Cipriani party.

The U.S.' National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has opened a fourth investigation into the Fisker Ocean SUV, this time to probe multiple claims of "inadvertent Automatic Emergency Braking." The ODI has already opened investigations into the car for complaints about braking loss, vehicle rollaway, and doors that won't open. The NHTSA said the complaints allege that owners experienced sudden activation of the Automatic Emergency Braking system in moments where there were no other vehicles or obstructions in the path of their cars.

Investigation into Shakira’s alleged tax evasion dropped by Spanish authorities

Prosecutors on Wednesday asked a Spanish court for the criminal case against the Colombian singer to be dropped, citing “a lack of evidence"

The investigation by Spanish authorities into an alleged tax fraud by Shakira is officially no more.

On Wednesday, prosecutors asked a Spanish court for the criminal case against the Colombian singer to be dropped, citing “a lack of evidence" — and on Thursday, the court agreed, according to The Guardian . EW has reached out to Shakira's legal team for comment.

The case was first opened in July, with prosecutors alleging the singer used an offshore company to evade paying the tax office up to €6.6m ($7.2 million) in 2018. Shakira settled the debt a month later, according to the report.

The court ruling Thursday comes nearly six months after Shakira settled a separate tax fraud case with the Spanish government in November.

Patricia J. Garcinuno/WireImage

That case began in 2018, when Spanish prosecutors charged the Latin American superstar for failing to pay 14.5 million euros (about $15 million) in taxes on income earned between 2012 and 2014. Shakira's representatives claimed she did not reside in Spain during that period and referred to her official residence in the Bahamas, but prosecutors argued that she lived in the northern region of Catalonia during those years.

Following a year-long investigation, prosecutors argued that the Grammy winner reported the Bahamas — a country with a lower tax rate than Spain — as her residence while she spent much of that time residing in Spain with her former partner, Spanish soccer player Gerard Piqué , and their two sons, according to the Associated Press . In 2017, Shakira was identified in the "Paradise Papers," which leaked offshore tax agreements of high-profile figures, including Madonna and Bono .

In July 2022, the "Whenever, Wherever" singer initially rejected a settlement offered by a prosecutor in the case, paving her path to the trial. Shakira's media representatives released a statement to Reuters at the time reiterating that she has consistently met all of her tax requirements.

"The singer is fully confident of her innocence and therefore does not accept a settlement," Shakira's reps said, adding that the case is "a total violation of her rights."

Ultimately, that trial was concluded on the day it started, after the singer agreed to settle after all. According to the BBC , Shakira paid a fine of €7.5 million, although she still denied any wrongdoing.

"While I was determined to defend my innocence in a trial that my lawyers were confident would have ruled in my favor, I have made the decision to finally resolve this matter with the best interest of my kids at heart who do not want to see their mom sacrifice her personal well-being in this fight," she said in a statement given to EW at the time . "I need to move past the stress and emotional toll of the last several years and focus on the things I love — my kids and all the opportunities to come in my career, including my upcoming world tour and my new album, both of which I am extremely excited about. I admire tremendously those who have fought these injustices to the end, but for me, today, winning is getting my time back for my kids and my career.”

Nelly Korda on the Met Gala and prepping for a run at LPGA history at Cognizant Founders Cup 2024

J aden Smith, the 25-year-old son of Will Smith and Jada Pinkett-Smith, was the first person to say hello to Nelly Korda at the Met Gala on Monday evening. As she stood in line waiting to walk the green carpet – the dress code was “The Garden of Time” – Korda was mostly silent as she took in the scene. Wearing an Oscar de la Renta dress and her first spray tan, Korda was especially starstruck by Grammy-winning artist Shakira, who was also making her Met Gala debut.

“It was just a dream come true,” said Korda.

Life lately for the most dominant player in golf has been nothing but dreamy. Korda enters this week Cognizant Founders Cup in Clifton, New Jersey, with a chance to become the first player in LPGA history to win six consecutive starts.

https://www.instagram.com/p/C6tbA9tgK7P/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==

After capturing her fifth straight title at the Chevron Championship, she pulled out of the L.A. stop at Wilshire Country Club so that she could take two weeks to rest.

“First night, Sunday, I really didn't sleep much at all,” said Korda. “The adrenaline, you actually feel really sick. You can't sleep. The adrenaline wears off and the body starts to ache a little bit.”

After that, she was sleeping nine to 10 hours a night, which is standard when she’s at home in Florida. The mental break was just as important for a player who is leading just about every area of the tour statistically .

During the second week off, Korda hosted her first all-girls AJGA event, "The Nelly," at the Concession Golf Club in Bradenton. She brought out one of the rescue dogs from Satchels Last Resort for the Junior Am. Marvel was up for adoption, and she hopes he found a home.

“You're your most genuine self when you see a puppy,” said Korda. “That really gave me a lot of positive energy.”

Although Korda, 25, is a 13-time winner on the LPGA and Oylmpic gold medalist, she doesn’t feel that far removed from the AJGA. When she saw one junior warming up with a TrackMan on the range, however, she realized how much things had changed.

https://www.instagram.com/reel/C6htQKVL05g/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==

Korda flew up to New Jersey on Saturday and played Upper Montclair Country Club on Sunday and then on Monday again before the gala. She doesn’t have the best record in New Jersey, having missed the cut at this event last year as well as the KPMG Women’s PGA at Baltusrol.

“This golf course is tough,” said Korda. “It's very, very narrow off the tee. The rough is very penalizing. And it's wet this year, so it's even worse.”

One player who is exceedingly comfortable this week is former No. 1 Jin Young Ko, who won last year’s Founders Cup in a playoff over 2022 champ Minjee Lee. Ko is a three-time winner of the Founders, though her other two victories were at different venues.

Ko suffered a shoulder injury earlier this year that took her away from the tour for a month and a half and recently tied for fourth at the JM Eagle LA Championship.

“I think my game is going well,” said Ko, who is back to playing (and sleeping) pain-free. “Like, I think I found good direction to (be) going.”

Nancy Lopez (1978) and Annika Sorenstam (2004-05) are the only other players in LPGA history to win five consecutive starts.

Sorenstam said all she could see during a streak like that were fairways, greens and one-putts.

“If I hit a bad shot, it didn’t affect me,” she said. “It just kind of repelled.”

In her mind, Sorenstam knew plenty more good shots were coming.

Korda, the first American player to win five times in an LPGA season since Juli Inkster in 1999, said she hasn’t thought much at all about what it would mean to win six in a row. She’s kept too busy.

Earlier this week U.S. captain Stacy Lewis organized a Solheim Cup dinner and World Golf Hall of Fame members Pat Bradley, Beth Daniel and Meg Mallon were in attendance. Daniel and Bradley are being honored this week as LPGA pioneers.

“They are just so positive and so fun to talk to,” said Korda. “I just hope that when I'm in their position, girls my age will think that about me, too.”

Pat Bradley was a fixture in the winner's circle on the LPGA Tour in the 1980s. She won 31 Tour events, including six major titles.

Bradley and Daniel are no strangers to monster seasons. Daniel won seven times in 1990, including a major, while Bradley won three of her six majors in 1986.

Bradley actually won the 1983 LPGA Chrysler-Plymouth Classic at Upper Montclair, which sits just 12 miles west of Manhatten.

“I mean, last night I said to Beth and Meg, how did I find this place? We didn't have GPS; we didn't have a phone,” said Bradley. “I must have stopped at 12 gas stations and said, ‘Joe, where is Upper Montclair Country Club?’ Because it was tucked back here so nicely.”

Perhaps one day Korda will be back at Upper Montclair, regaling players with stories about the time she “felt like a princess” at the Met Gala a few short days before she made LPGA history.

The stage is hers. Back in her Nike apparel, hair bun and visor, she hopes her work inside the ropes is enough to move the tour forward.

“At the end of the day, I think if you perform well in your sport, that's what grabs people's attention,” said Korda. “I'm not the type of person that tries to push anything or does anything I'm not really comfortable with … I hope that I just do it naturally.”

Sum 41 announces split, final album and tour: 'We are forever grateful'

shakira tour mangosta

Sum 41 is dividing.

The band took to social media Monday to share the news that "Sum 41 will be disbanding."

"Being in Sum 41 since 1996 has brought us some of the best moments of our lives. We are forever grateful for our fans old and new, who have supported us in every way. It is hard to articulate the love and respect we have for all of you and we wanted you to hear this from us first," they said in the post.

The group won't disband before releasing their promised upcoming album and doing a global farewell tour.

"We will still be finishing all of our current upcoming tour dates this year, and we're looking forward to releasing our final album 'Heaven :x: Hell,' along with a final worldwide headlining tour to celebrate. Details will be announced as soon as we have them."

Avril Lavigne Singer said she was still 'really close' with her ex-husbands in 2019

Billboard's Latin Women in Music: Shakira gives moving Woman of the Year speech

Lead singer (and Avril Lavigne 's ex-husband) Deryck Whibley , 43, also shared the announcement on his own Instagram. Jason "Cone" McCaslin, Dave Baksh, Thomas Thacker and Frank Zummo are listed as current members of the group on Instagram.

The early aughts rock band, known for hit tracks including "In Too Deep" and "Fat Lip," was in good company among the slew of late-1990s and early 2000s bands such as Good Charlotte and Yellowcard that followed Blink-182 and The Offspring.

They were a regular presence on the Warped Tour, the popular alt-rock outing that gave many bands of that ilk their first major platform. Sum 41 played the festival numerous times since 2000 and most recently in 2019.

In addition to their ongoing and upcoming tour, the group is scheduled to perform as part of the lineup of the When We Were Young fest in Las Vegas in October.
