We went on a speed boat excursion with Book-Tour-Egypt and found it a very nice experience. Everything was very well organized, the boat driver was experienced and showed nice places for snorkeling, photos, etc. The price was quite competitive. Will choose again and recommend for friends when in Egypt! Good luck - you are doing great! 👍

Aqua blue water park

Having messaged late Friday evening, they managed to book us tickets for Aqua blue water park for 5 of us including transfers and food, for Saturday AM. Excellent service, response and value for money. They also kindly arranged transfer to the airport from the hotel for that Saturday evening, cheaper and better than the hotel. We would definitely recommend and use them again, thank you.

Good compagny Good driver. The driver was in time waiting for us a couple of minutes before our landing. I highly recommend their services for anyone wishing to travel to Dahab or elsewhere in Sinai (Saint Catherine, etc.).

From start to finish the day was incredibly well organised. We were given our pick up times, flight times and recommendations on what to bring by Rana the day before over WhatsApp. We were picked up on time and escorted all the way through the airport. Once arriving in Cairo we were picked up immediately and taken to the museum, where we had a tour as well as some free time. After this we visited a papyrus shop (they were abit pushy for you to buy something but if you just keep firm they’ll leave you alone). Lunch was shortly after, it was okay, super busy and chaotic though as they must take a lot of trip groups there, we didn’t even have a seat for a while. After lunch was the pyramids! This was such a mood booster and they are so incredible. After a few hours we then went to a perfume shop for a sales pitch and refreshments, no pressure to buy anything at all. We then had a Nike cruise (additional £10), a walk around the town and finished the day with a McDonald’s trip. Our guide was super lovely and informative, I felt super safe in Cairo and with him. It is a super long day though, I know it’s stated in the advert but really prepare yourself. We left the hotel at 6am and didn’t get back till 3am the next day.

I recommend!

I booked a transfer with them from Marsa Alam to Hurghada and I’m very glad! The transfer was quicker than expected, driver was very nice and make sure I had enough space for legs, the aircon was on, etc. So, trip was comfortable. And the price was also very fair!

Should You Book A Tour Your First Trip to Egypt, or Navigate on Your Own?

Updated: May 9, 2023

book tour egypt rezensionen

Should you book a tour on your first trip to Egypt or explore on your own? Perhaps you've been "nomadding" forever. I get it, but when visiting Egypt, there are pros & cons to both.

As with everything, it depends on your travel style, comfort level, and skills.

Pros of booking a tour or guide

Hassle-free.

Your trip is going to be primarily hassle-free. You won’t need to worry about transportation or language barriers for the most part, which can be hugely stressful in Egypt.

Also, you won’t have to be too worried about getting scammed, as your guide will look out for you. You can focus on taking in the scenery and your experiences without worrying about logistics or anything else.

Budgeting & planning

When you budget with the cost of your tour in mind, you have a relatively good estimate of what your trip will cost. This is a considerable advantage to planning as you go and hoping to find the best prices for what you want to do.

Also, tour guides can help make sure you are not charged inflated tourist prices that add to a small fortune.

You want to squeeze in as much as possible

Likely you have a limited amount of time to spend in Egypt and want to maximize your efforts. There’s no better way to cover a lot of ground than with a tour, personal guide, or a combination of both.

Egypt runs on “Egypt-time” and can be frustrating for the casual tourist. Sensory overload is very intense in Egypt.

Having a friendly face to manage transportation, and ticket lines and answer your questions can be the difference between a stellar vacation and a stressful one.

You don’t know anyone

If you’re heading to Egypt without knowing anyone, a personal guide or tour ensures you have someone to rely on.

Having someone on your side is an invaluable resource in Egypt, where it’s all about who you know. Egypt is a place where it’s beneficial to know a few people because much of the up-to-date tourist information comes from people, not online.

Solo female travel

Egypt is a complex country to trek as a female solo traveler for several reasons. The bottom line is any female unaccompanied by a male faces verbal harassment.

A tour or a personal guide acts as a buffer so you can experience the magic of Egypt without being a target for harassment. Although the catcalls are mainly harmless, they can unravel your nerves after 8 hours of navigating an unknown city in the sweltering desert sun.

Traveling with children

If you are traveling with children, a tour can provide just the right structure and organization.

Children can be demanding in unfamiliar environments, and you can be more attentive to their needs if you have a guide to managing the schedule.

When you have a guide handling the details, you can make sure you and your family have the best experience possible.

Explanation of sites

One of the most significant benefits of having a guide or booking a tour is enjoying the bits of local and historical knowledge a guide provides.

Ancient Egypt is extraordinary, but the temples and sites become more alive when you know what you're looking at. In-depth knowledge enhances your appreciation for the mysterious history of Egyptian civilization.

Cons of booking a tour or guide

Tours and personal guides can be on the expensive side of travel and may not be the best option for your budget. If you are a solo traveler, single supplements can be way too pricey and may outweigh the convenience of a tour.

Safety concerns

You may feel that groups stand out and are a safety concern. In this case, you may be more comfortable going under the radar and trying to blend in rather than touring the sites with a big group.

Fewer opportunities to mingle with locals

Sometimes tours limit the feeling of an authentic, local experience. You may be a traveler that thrives on the excitement of mingling with locals without the buffer of a guide or group.

Less opportunity to be spontaneous

Tours can leave you feeling penned in or rushed at sites you wish you could spend more time exploring. You want to get your money’s worth, so it’s a good idea to stick with the tour even though you may see something along the way worth exploring.

Instagram shots & video

You may not have time to stage Instagram shots and or videos if you book a tour. You need to adhere to the group schedule and respect the shared experience of the entire group.

Pros of exploring on your own

You can be spontaneous.

Exploring Egypt on your solo means you can do what you want, when, where, and who you want to do it with.

You can visit the Luxor temple two days in a row if you can’t get enough. You can sleep through breakfast and begin your day at noon if it suits you.

You can change your plans in the middle of the day. You can be spontaneous without worrying about anyone but yourself (and perhaps your travel mate).

Travel meetups

Outside of group travel, you often make friends along the way, leading to meetups. You can plan to travel with people you meet during your travels. Egyptians are super hospitable & friendly, so don’t be surprised if you receive an invitation to dinner or even a wedding!

If you’re on a tight budget, exploring Egypt on your own may be a great option to save money.

When you travel outside of a tour, you can stay at cheaper hotels, dine on street food, and take local transport. If you meet up with fellow travelers, you can further save money by sharing the cost of accommodation, food, and transportation!

A significant benefit to traveling without a tour in Egypt is setting up time-consuming Instagram shots & videos without worry.

Imagine touring the vast temple complex of Luxor when the perfect sunset is on the horizon, and your tour group has to leave. Ugh. The struggle is real.

When you tour Egypt on your own, you can spend as much time as you like setting up the perfect shot or just gazing at the majesty of the scenery.

Cons of exploring on your own

Time management snafu’s.

You may be at a disadvantage regarding time management if you decide to explore on your own. Egypt has its own ecosystem, which I call “Egypt-time.”

Most everything runs on Egypt-time”, and when you're unfamiliar with the rhythm of Egypt, adapting can be frustrating.

You may not be able to manage your time well enough to see everything. Some examples include unanticipated closures, out-of-date websites or schedules, or misinformation from well-meaning locals.

Harassment and scams

If you're a woman, you will likely be verbally harassed quite a bit. Either way, you may be a target for scams or worse.

Again, it comes down to your situation. If you speak Arabic, you have a buffer; if not, you may grow increasingly frustrated or end up having a bad experience that sours your trip.

My experience has proved that while verbal harassment is common, it's rarely followed up by anything else. A few Arabic phrases like "imshee!" go away , or "eib," shame on you , or "inta kelb," which means you are a dog (I know it's harsh, lol) , usually does the trick to shut them down.

You may not feel safe if you are a female solo traveler or even as a couple. Going places alone can feel risky, and sometimes it is. You stand out if you are traveling alone.

The Egyptian people are super friendly, hospitable, and genuine, but predators are waiting to take advantage of tourists like every country.

Arguments with your travel companion

If you've ever traveled with your mate or partner to a location that's 100 degrees plus, you don't know anyone, and you don't speak the local language - frustration happens, and often it leads to arguments.

Egypt travel is not for the faint-hearted. It's a glorious, complicated country to navigate even if you speak Arabic and are used to the heat. Everything runs on "Egypt time," and learning the rhythm of Egypt requires patience, humor, and understanding.

Final thoughts

So, should you book a tour or explore on your own?

A combination of exploration on your own and a personal guide or tour for a few sites is the perfect compromise.

You can kick off your holiday with a short tour or personal guide to get familiar with Egypt, and then when you're feeling more comfortable, venture beyond the safety of your guide!

I love doing an occasional tour, trekking around for a few days on my own, and then enlisting the services of a personal guide for an in-depth experience. This allows you to get an authentic feel for the magic of Egypt and gain memories you won't forget.

Best of Egypt

I joined the 8 days tour - Best of Egypt with G-adventure on 22 Dec 2019. I had great experience with my tour. We visited the Great Pyramid of Giza, the Egyptian Museum, then took local train to Aswan, where we visited Philae Temple and Abu Simble. We then sailed to Luxor and visited the Karnak Temple, the Valley of Kings, etc. Our fellow travellers are friendly. Our tour guide Saad Matta is very knowledgeable about Egyptian history. He explained to us about the background of various temples, tombs and arts. The tour was educational and enjoyable. I was very impressed by his rich knowledge about the ancient Egyptian history. In addition, he showed us around the local markets, gave us shopping advice. He was very helpful.

Queen Cleopatra - 7 days Tour

Queen Cleopatra - 7 days

Absolutely loved this tour! Big shout out to Sohaila & Anas who were both fantastic tour guides. There were a couple of things along the way that could have gone a little better, but they were insignificant in the grand scheme of things. The sites included in the tour are all breath taking and somehow get better and better. I'd highly recommend doing all of the extras, particularly Abu Simbel and the Luxor hot air balloon. Accom was also much better than I had expected and sleeper train wasn't too bad either, surprisingly.

I want to thank Egypt Direct/Tour Radar for the experience of a lifetime! The guide Nasser introduced me to the Egyptian people and their vibrant culture. Nasser's insite to the creation of the sites we explored put in perspective Egyptian people's connection to the country. Nasser and driver Youssef elevated any safety concerns I had about touring on my own. Nasser's knowledge about the archaeological sites we visited gave perspective to why people should explore Egypt. If you want to travel on your own, do so but ask if while on tour will you meet up with other travelers.

The tour and schedule was fantastic with the sights as stated in the tour company . The Hotel in Cairo and food are average with overpriced drinks , The boat cruise on the Nile was amazing with staff and food delicious. Egypt Adventure Tour

Egypt Adventure

The Intrepid tour and our guide was excellent! However, I booked my tour through TourRadar, and TourRadar was a disaster from beginning to end, with very slow responses to any questions. I received my voucher only one week before departure, and they did not pass over the information to Intrepid about my late arrival on the opening day. Originally, I was booked via TourRadar on a different tour with a different company, but this was cancelled by TourRadar only 6 weeks before departure and long after confirmation was given and I had booked my flight tickets. So it was pure luck that Intrepid had a tour on the same dates.

The route was well planned and if we had tried to plan it ourselves without a tour guide, we wouldn't have been able to do half of it. The tour guide, George Tamer, was very helpful and friendly throughout the whole tour, giving loads of information regarding the highlights of the Egyptian sites and history. We were lucky that we got into a small group of 5 people and therefore we were able to move around using a smaller bus.

Our 9 day Cairo-Luxor-Aswan-Abu Simbel tour was amazing and highlighted the beauties of Egypt. Our tour guide in Cairo ( Bassem) and Mohamed ( Luxor to Abu Simbel) were qualified, knowledgeable, enthusiastic and eager to answer our questions and kept us safe. We loved the sites and were completely in awe by the history of Ancient Egypt; its people ingenuity, determination and skills. Very hectic schedule! What people love about Fully Guided Tours in Egypt

Great tour with a perfect mix of included activities and free time. Highly reccommended
Queen Cleopatras is a great tour, highly recommended, Anas is a great guide, he explained everything about Egyptian culture and toke care about our group! I will recommend to head office to deliver schedules with the tours to be able to plan our days. Cruse was amazing, service is great and everyone is very friendly! Also there is laundry available at your room! Ruby II is a great option, the room is very nice! I won’t recommend to take the train from Cairo to Aswan, service is great but services are not good (very old and dirty), washrooms very dirty!

Our happy travellers rave about Egypt

No one does it like approach.

We just returned from Egypt with Approach tours. An amazing experience full of unbelievable history, gorgeous landscapes and knowledgeable, helpful guides. No one does it like Approach! Looking forward to our fall Ireland trip.

Amazing accommodations!

Fantastic scenery, culture, great people (with good humour). Loved Cairo, Aswan, and Hurghada! Amazing snorkelling. Amazing accommodations!

Itinerary was perfect

Excellent Approach tour to Egypt. Itinerary was perfect and well thought out. Local guide was a knowledgeable Egyptologist and kept things interesting. Our Group Guru Caroline was fun to travel with and made sure all was well. Looking forward to another Approach trip!

What a fantastic trip!!

Exceptional, well thought out tour. The national tour guide provided us with in-depth Egyptian history from early civilization to present day. There was a nice variety of activities beyond archeological sites such as museums, a few opportunities to barter for souvenirs, a visit to a mosque & historic church, a camel ride, sound & light shows, a felluca ride and always a mix of meals for the culinary delight. Cruising the Nile, it was just what the doctor ordered after a busy week in Cairo. Very much appreciated in country flights on some days when sites were just a bit too far away; no need to spend your entire day on a bus to get somewhere. Approach, you’ve done it again, what a fantastic trip!!

Looking forward to our next Approach Tours trip!

WOW! Amazing trip to Egypt with Approach Tours! Door-to-door service and everything in between was well-planned. Food, hotel accommodations and Nile cruise were all top-notch. Travelled to all the must-sees of Egypt with a great group of people. National guide, Mahal, made Egypt come alive for us. We are looking forward to our next Approach Tours trip!

A worry-free adventure

The Approach tour to Egypt was the realization of a dream! Approach Tours planned a fantastic itinerary and were extremely responsive to group wants and needs along the way. The Group Guru and the Egyptian Guide both made this a worry-free adventure full of history and new experiences. I would recommend this tour to anyone 55+ based on tour pace, locations, quality of food/accommodations, guide knowledge and just plain fun!

A fantastic adventure

I just returned from a fantastic adventure through the time and history of Egypt thanks to Approach tours. Our fabulous Egyptian guide, gurus and fellow group members made this a fantastic trip for me. Egypt offers so much!

Can i drink tap water in Egypt?

Don't drink the tap water - it is highly chlorinated. However, with enough time in Egypt, you could potentially grow accustomed to the water. This doesn't mean that the tap water is polluted, it simply means that you are not used to it, and you might get stomach problems. This happened to most people when they visit a country for the first time. They were simply not used to water there. It's a similar situation here. It is advisable to drink Bottled water during your entire holiday. That is why it is strongly advisable that you don't drink the tap water, and use it only for washing and brushing your teeth.

What is the best time to visit Egypt 2024 ?

Enjoy Egypt Tours From September until March. It is the perfect time when the weather is good and mild. From September until mid-November, when it is very nice and the temperatures are pleasant for all activities - around 25 C to 15 C. mid-Nov until the end of February is wintertime when temperatures during the day are around 12 or 15 C, and at night can drop to about 7 or 8 C. In March and April, the weather is still so nice and travelers can enjoy the Easter vacation. From May to September is the summer season. Spending summertime in a desert climate does not appeal to most travelers. Average daytime temperatures hover in the high 80s and low to mid-90s, although they can jump up into three digits in the South as in Luxor and Aswan. Summer is really hot here, prices go down and it is a good chance for travelers with a tight budget.

Winters are generally mild, although temperatures can fall below 50 degrees Fahrenheit (10 degrees Celsius) at night. In the Western Desert. In Cairo, average summer temperatures regularly exceed 86 degrees Fahrenheit (30 degrees Celsius), while the record high for Luxor and Aswan, popular tourist destinations on the banks of the River Nile, is 110 degrees Fahrenheit (45 degrees Celsius).

Is Egypt safe to travel to ?

Safety and security are our first and foremost concerns! Egypt is a very safe country with a low crime rate. Now with the coronavirus outbreak, accommodations and sightseeing nationwide have finalized sterilization and disinfection in light of the Egyptian government's efforts to implement precautionary measures against the COVID-19. In addition, our company has followed the same procedures to make all our staff, guides, and drivers are well-trained with the current events to prevent and stop the spread of this outbreak. Traveling the world is a joyful experience and we want to do our part to keep the anticipation stress-free.

What are the best things to do in Egypt?

There are many things to do in Egypt during your visit depending on your interests and character. Cairo, Alexandria, Luxor, and Aswan Nile cruise must be your first priority if you are a history and culture lover. You must visit the pyramids of Giza, enjoy a Nile cruise between Luxor and Aswan and enjoy visiting the most important tourist attractions in Luxor and Aswan. You can visit the city of Hurghada, Marsa Alam, or Sharm el-Sheikh Red Sea for relaxation and enjoy many activities there such as diving, snorkeling, sunbathing, or swimming. You may like to go on a safari trip in the western desert if you are an adventurer. Many other activities are available in every single Egyptian city

Should I visit Egypt during Summer?

The high season for tourism is all year with winter and spring being peak season for cultural travels with lots of sightseeing. Weather in Egypt is perfect for many kinds of tourism, and if coming in June, July, and August, head for the seaside resorts. Those months are very warm with temperatures that can reach around 45C. and the humidity is about 70 to 80%, but it is bearable with the sea and large swimming pools nearby. So the period of the high summer season is also a bit busy as hotels fill up with tourists from all over the world looking for a bargain, lots of sunshine, diving, snorkeling, etc. It is also a primary vacation time in Europe. If you come in the deep summer season you can still enjoy it because you can always sightsee early in the morning and go again at night when the sunsets. You will definitely need good sunscreen and a lot of liquids to drink with a nice hat on your head. Summer is a good time for people looking for good rates in accommodation and other services.

What is the dress code in Egypt?

Egypt is a Muslim country and the dress code is towards the conservative side, especially for women. That being said, we are used to seeing travelers from all over the world. My suggestion would be to wear light clothes and not to wear short shorts, short skirts and alike to avoid the occasional unwanted stare. But it's really up to you. When you visit religious places (synagogues, churches, and mosques) you do need to cover your shoulders and wear over the knee dresses, if you are planning to wear one of course. If you plan to attend the Nile dinner cruise, there is no need for formal wear unless you want to make that night a special night! Also, you will be sharing this experience with other travelers so you can dress however you feel most comfortable.

How to get visa to visit Egypt?

You can get your visa when you arrive at Cairo Airport. It is an easy process for USA, UK, Canadian, Australian and European citizens. The visa is simply a stamp (like a mail or postage stamp) that you buy from the visa office, at the port of entry just before the immigration booth. The visa will cost you $25 US Dollars and after buying it; you just stick it on any empty page on your passport. Once you have bought your visa you then stand in line to get your passport stamped by the immigration officer. You can also apply for E-Visa via the official electronic visa portal: www.visa2egypt.gov.eg

How many days in Egypt is enough?

Your Egypt Tours travel agency recommends two weeks so that you can enjoy the temples and tombs of Luxor and Aswan, explore the sights of Cairo, and relax in the Red Sea islands and nature reserves.

What is the best Nile River cruise?

There are many Nile cruises. Not to name one but your choice depends on many things to put in mind such as the number of nights you want to spend on the cruiser, your budget, and the standard of the Nile cruise. We recommend you choose a 5-star luxury Nile cruise, and if you are looking for a private Nile River cruise you can choose Dahabiya cruises, it is only for the small-group tour, about 15 people. Most cruises have. There is another way of cruising the Nile, which is the Felucca boat. It is traditional and charming but it is cheap as long as it will be ok to sleep on the deck exposed to mosquitos and most of these boats do not have a toilet

When is best time of the year to travel to Egypt?

The best time to visit Egypt is generally from October to April where it is suitable for outdoor activities and sightseeing.

What destinations are included in Egypt travel?

Egypt travel usually have guided tours to archaeological sites, museums, and historical landmarks. Also have optional activities may include hot air balloon rides over Luxor, snorkeling in the Red Sea, or desert safaris.

Travel has helped us to understand the meaning of life and it has helped us become better people. Each time we travel, we see the world with new eyes.

Absolutely mind blowing. A definite must see. We flew from Aswan after I contact them, as I did not want to sit in car for hours with my 10-year-old daughter. Just so much history and ancient love. You cannot miss this one thing if you are in Cairo. The rocks are just HUGE, so special.

Best Books to Read About Egypt Before You Go

There’s plenty to be discovered about Egypt in literature before you go. Plus some of the novels and guidebooks outlined below, might make some fun, educational and informative reading during your Egyptian sojourn.

The first novel about Egypt that springs to mind is usually The English Patient by Michael Oondatje. And it definitely sets the scene for adventures into Egypt with rich desert landscapes, all the romance of archaeological discoveries and the tense buildup to WWII. The novel is loosely based on the real life story of Hungarian explorer László Almásy who discovered the Cave of Swimmers in the mountainous Gilf Kebir region of the Sahara Desert. Almásy played a crucial part in mapping out the Gilf and used this knowledge during the war. The book has obviously romanticized and altered the real tale no end.

If you are interested in discovering more of the true story to the mysterious Almásy, you could get hold of The Secret Life of Laszlo Almasy: The Real English Patient by John Bierman or The Lost Oasis: The True Story Behind The English Patient by Saul Kelly which both contain a lot of historical information.

While we’re on a desert theme, if Egypt’s Western Desert fascinates you with all its wadis (valleys) and incredible landscapes, then you may wish to get hold of the Guidebook to the Western Desert of Egypt by Casandra Vivian. Vivian is a writer and photographer who lived in Egypt for years. The book contains GPS waypoints for various places in the desert and describes the history, geography, geology and caravan routes of desert occupants. Plus there’s plenty of itinerary and route planning advice. The book is an update to her previous 1990 edition, Islands of the Blest , considered a must for any traveler to these regions.

Egypt Rediscovered by Mohamed El Hebeishy is another real find, a photographic book filled with short essays that showcases some of the country’s more hidden treasures. Locations range from places as remote as the Western Desert to other spots right in central Cairo.

If the world of mummies, the afterlife and the pyramids fascinate you, there’s an absolute wealth of information out there. For an insight into the afterlife get hold of Raymond O. Faulkner’s The Ancient Egyptian Book of the Dead for an overview. While The Alexandria Quartet by Lawrence Durrell will give you much of the background to the history of Alexandria and Egypt, although you might need the vocabulary and patience to wade through the four volumes.

If you need to do some route planning there are plenty of travel guide titles on Egypt by major publishing houses such as Lonely Planet, DK Eyewitness Guides, Frommer’s, AA Explorers and others. While you’re looking at travel guides it wouldn’t hurt to pick up a language guide to Arabic, those produced by Lonely Planet and Rough Guides are usually very good. More specific guides on places such as Luxor are available. One includes Kent Week’s, The Treasures of Luxor and the Valley of the Kings which is filled with good illustrations.

Another handy book for travelers is Egypt - Culture Smart! by Jailan Zayan to help you prepare for the customs, value, traditions, history, religious background, food, taboos and various practices you might encounter when you get to Egypt. It might help you avoid a few faux pas!

While if you like reading about other traveller’s journeys through Egypt you might like to read the chapters in Michael Palin’s Pole to Pole or Around the World in 80 Days that both cover Egypt.

If you need some light reading, particularly for your own Nile River cruise, Death on the Nile by Agatha Christie could be just the thing. The famed mystery writer has captured life here well, although certain scenes might have you feeling a little suspicious of your fellow crew members. Another very light read, perhaps for the kids, could be Asterix and Cleopatra by Rene Goscinny and Albert Uderzo.

Alternatively if you would like to get familiar with some of the literature coming out of Egypt, you might like to get your hands on works by authors such as Naguib Mahfouz who won the Nobel Prize for Literature, the first Arabic-language writer to do so and women writers like Nawal El Saadawi and Alifa Rifaat.

Egypt is a place that has always been on my travel bucket list. I would love to see the pyramids of Giza and visit the Valley of the Kings.

Until I can actually make it to Egypt one day, I will enjoy reading about it instead! That’s the great thing about books; they can transport you there!

One of the most popular genres for books set in Egypt is historical fiction novels that go into great detail about the history of Egypt, the Middle East, and the many empires that have come and gone over the centuries.

Besides historical fiction, there are also many contemporary novels filled with action, adventure, and romance.

So, if you are ready to be transported to Egypt, look no further than these books.

Novels and Fiction Books Set in Egypt

Death on the Nile

Death on the Nile by Agatha Christie

Death on the Nile, Agatha Christie’s most exotic murder mystery, with its many twists and turns and unravellings is a marvel to read.

The tranquility of a luxury cruise along the Nile was shattered by the discovery that Linnet Ridgeway had been shot through the head. She was young, stylish, and beautiful. A girl who had everything . . . until she lost her life.

Hercule Poirot recalled an earlier outburst by a fellow passenger: “I’d like to put my dear little pistol against her head and just press the trigger.” Yet under the searing heat of the Egyptian sun, nothing is ever quite what it seems.

the tent

The Tent by Miral al-Tahawy

Translated by: Anthony Calderbank

The Tent is a beautifully written, powerful, and disturbing novel, featuring a host of women characters whose lives are subject to the will of a single, often absent, patriarch and his brutal, foul-mouthed mother.

Told through the eyes of a young girl, the lives of the Bedouin and peasant women unfold, revealing the tragedy of the sonless mother and the intolerable heaviness of existence.

Set against trackless deserts and star-filled night skies, the story tells of the young girl’s relationship with her distant father and a foreign woman who is well-meaning but ultimately motivated by self-interest.

It provides an intimate glimpse inside the women’s quarters and chronicles their pastimes and preoccupations, their stories, and their songs.

The Map of Love

The Map of Love by Ahdaf Soueif

An extraordinary cross-cultural love story set across Egypt, England, and the United States.

At either end of the twentieth century, two women fall in love with men outside their familiar worlds. In 1901, Anna Winterbourne, recently widowed, leaves England for Egypt, where, far from the comfort of the British colony, she finds herself enraptured by the real Egypt and in love with Sharif Pasha al-Baroudi.

Nearly a hundred years later, Isabel Parkman, a divorced American journalist, and descendant of Anna and Sharif has fallen in love with Omar al-Ghamrawi, a gifted and difficult Egyptian-American conductor with his own passionate politics.

When Isabel, in an attempt to discover the truth behind her heritage, reenacts Anna’s excursion to Egypt, the story of her great-grandparents unravels before her, revealing startling parallels for her own life.

hunger

Hunger: An Egyptian Novel by Mohamed El-Bisatie

As with his earlier works, Mohamed El-Bisatie’s novel is set in the Egyptian countryside, about which he writes with such understanding. Episodic in form, it deals with a family―Zaghloul the layabout father, Sakeena the long-suffering wife, and two young boys.

The central theme of the book is hunger: the hunger of not knowing where one’s next meal is coming from, and the universal hunger for sex and love.

Sakeena’s life revolves around trying to provide her family with the necessary daily loaves of bread that will stave off starvation.

Labor-shy Zaghloul works on and off at one of the village’s cafés but prefers to spend his time listening in on conversations about subjects such as politics, which he would have liked to know more about, if only he had been an educated man.

palace walk

Palace Walk by Naguib Mahfouz

Translated by: William Maynard Hutchins and Olive E. Kenny

Palace Walk  is the first novel in Nobel Prize-winner Naguib Mahfouz’s magnificent Cairo Trilogy, an epic family saga of colonial Egypt that is considered his masterwork.

The novels of the Cairo Trilogy trace three generations of the family of tyrannical patriarch al-Sayyid Ahmad Abd al-Jawad, who rules his household with a strict hand while living a secret life of self-indulgence.

Palace Walk  introduces us to his gentle, oppressed wife, Amina, his cloistered daughters, Aisha and Khadija, and his three sons—the tragic and idealistic Fahmy, the dissolute hedonist Yasin, and the soul-searching intellectual Kamal.

The family’s trials mirror those of their turbulent country during the years spanning the two world wars, as change comes to a society that has resisted it for centuries.

palace of desire

Palace of Desire by Naguib Mahfouz

Translated by: William Maynard Hutchins, Lorne M. Kenny, and Olive E. Kenny

Palace of Desire is the second novel in Nobel Prize-winner Naguib Mahfouz’s magnificent Cairo Trilogy. In Palace of Desire, his rebellious children struggle to move beyond his domination, as the world around them opens to the currents of modernity and political and domestic turmoil brought by the 1920s.

sugar street

Sugar Street by Naguib Mahfouz

Translated by: William Maynard Hutchins and Angele Botros Samaan

Sugar Street  is the final novel in Nobel Prize-winner Naguib Mahfouz’s magnificent Cairo Trilogy, an epic family saga of colonial Egypt that is considered his masterwork.

Sugar Street  brings Mahfouz’s vivid tapestry of an evolving Egypt to a dramatic climax as the aging patriarch sees one grandson become a Communist, one a Muslim fundamentalist, and one the lover of a powerful politician. Filled with compelling drama, earthy humor, and remarkable insight.

beer in the snooker club

Beer in the Snooker Club by Waguih Ghali

Set amidst the turbulence of 1950s Cairo, Beer in the Snooker Club is the story of Ram Bey, an over-educated, under-ambitious young Egyptian struggling to find out where he fits in.

Ram’s favorite haunt is the fashionable Cairo Snooker Club, whose members strive to emulate English gentility; but his best friends are young intellectuals who devour the works of Sartre and engage in dangerous revolutionary activities to support Egyptian independence.

By turns biting and comic, Beer in the Snooker Club — the first and only book by Waguih Ghali — became a cult classic when it was first published and remains a timeless portrait of a loveable rogue coming of age in turbulent times.

the girl with braided hair

The Girl with Braided Hair by Rasha Adly

Translated by: Sarah Enany

The lives of two women living centuries apart are connected by an enigmatic painting in this mesmerizing debut based on historical events.

Art historian, Yasmine, is restoring an unsigned portrait of a strikingly beautiful girl from the Napoleonic Era when she discovers that the artist has embedded a lock of hair into the painting, something highly unusual. The mysterious painting came into the museum’s possession without record, and Yasmine becomes consumed by the secret concealed within this captivating work.

Meanwhile, at the close of the French Campaign in Egypt, sixteen-year-old Zeinab, the daughter of a prominent sheikh, is drawn into French high society when Napoleon himself requests her presence. Enamored by the foreign customs of the Europeans, she finds herself on a dangerous path, one that may ostracize her from her family and culture.

the time travels of the man who sold pickles and sweets

The Time-Travels of the Man Who Sold Pickles and Sweets by Khairy Shalaby

Translated by: Michael Cooperson

Ibn Shalaby, like many Egyptians, is looking for a job. Yet, unlike most of his fellow citizens, he is prone to sudden dislocations in time. Armed with his trusty briefcase and his Islamic-calendar wristwatch, he bounces uncontrollably through Egypt’s rich and varied past, with occasional return visits to the 1990s.

Through his wild and whimsical adventures, he meets, befriends, and falls out with sultans, poets, and an assortment of celebrities-from Naguib Mahfouz to the founder of the city of Cairo. Khairy Shalaby’s nimble storytelling brings this witty odyssey to life.

murder at the mena house

Murder at the Mena House by Erica Ruth Neubauer

Well-heeled travelers from around the world flock to the Mena House Hotel–an exotic gem in the heart of Cairo where cocktails flow, adventure dispels the aftershocks of World War I, and deadly dangers await in the shadows… Egypt, 1926. Fiercely independent American Jane Wunderly has made up her mind: she won’t be swept off her feet on a trip abroad. Despite her Aunt Millie’s best efforts at meddling with her love life, the young widow would rather gaze at the Great Pyramids of Giza than into the eyes of a dashing stranger. Yet Jane’s plans to remain cool and indifferent become ancient history in the company of Mr. Redvers, a roguish banker she can’t quite figure out.

the last watchman of old cairo

The Last Watchman of Old Cairo by Michael David Lukas

In this spellbinding novel, a young man journeys from California to Cairo to unravel centuries-old family secrets.

Joseph, a literature student at Berkeley, is the son of a Jewish mother and a Muslim father. One day, a mysterious package arrives on his doorstep, pulling him into a mesmerizing adventure to uncover the tangled history that binds the two sides of his family.

For generations, the men of the al-Raqb family have served as watchmen of the storied Ibn Ezra Synagogue in Old Cairo, built at the site where the infant Moses was taken from the Nile. Joseph learns of his ancestor Ali, a Muslim orphan who nearly a thousand years earlier was entrusted as the first watchman of the synagogue and became enchanted by its legendary–perhaps magical–Ezra Scroll.

in the spiders room

In the Spider’s Room by Muhammed Abdelnabi

Translated by: Jonathan Wright

Hani was out for an evening stroll near Cairo’s Tahrir Square when a heavy hand landed on his shoulder. An informant had identified him, and he was thrown into the back of a police truck. There began a seven-month nightmare as he was swept up, along with fifty other men, in the infamous Queen Boat affair that targeted Egypt’s gay community.

Finally free, but traumatized into speechlessness, Hani writes down the events of his life—his first sexual desires, his relationship with his mother, his marriage of convenience, and his passion for Abdel Aziz, the only man he ever truly loved.

the queue

The Queue by Basma Abdel Aziz

Translated by: Elisabeth Jaquette

Set against the backdrop of a failed political uprising,  The Queue  is a chilling debut that evokes Orwellian dystopia, Kafkaesque surrealism, and a very real vision of life after the Arab Spring. In a surreal, but familiar vision of modern-day Egypt, a centralized authority known as ‘the Gate’ has risen to power in the aftermath of the ‘Disgraceful Events,’ a failed popular uprising.

Citizens are required to obtain permission from the Gate in order to take care of even the most basic of their daily affairs, yet the Gate never opens, and the queue in front of it grows longer.

The Memoirs of Cleopatra

The Memoirs of Cleopatra by Margaret George

Bestselling novelist Margaret George brings to life the glittering kingdom of Cleopatra, Queen of the Nile, in this lush, sweeping, and richly detailed saga.

Told in Cleopatra’s own voice,  The Memoirs of Cleopatra  is a mesmerizing tale of ambition, passion, and betrayal in the ancient Egyptian world, which begins when the twenty-year-old queen seeks out the most powerful man in the world, Julius Caesar, and does not end until, having survived the assassination of Caesar and the defeat of the second man she loves, Marc Antony, she plots her own death rather than be paraded in triumph through the streets of Rome.

the open door

The Open Door by Latifa al-Zayyat

Translated by: Marilyn Booth

February 1946: Cairo is engulfed by demonstrations against the British. Layla’s older brother Mahmud returns, wounded in the clashes, and the events of that fateful day marked a turning point in her life, an awakening to the world around her.

Latifa al-Zayyat’s acclaimed modern classic follows Layla through her sexual and political coming of age. Her rebellious spirit seeks to free itself from the stifling social codes that dictate a young woman’s life, just as Egypt struggles to shake off the yoke of imperialist rule.

Memoirs & Nonfiction Books About Egypt

on the nile in the golden age of travel

On the Nile in the Golden Age of Travel by Andrew Humphreys

This book is a thorough and engaging history of cruising the world’s longest river, it’s part regular non-fiction and part coffee table book.

Using period photography, and colorful vintage posters and advertising material, this book tells the story of the people, the places, and the boats, from pioneering Nile travelers like Amelia Edwards and Lucie Duff Gordon, through to famed later passengers, such as Rudyard Kipling, Arthur Conan Doyle, and, of course, Agatha Christie, whose staging of Death on the Nile only added to the allure.

midnight in cairo

Midnight in Cairo: The Divas of Egypt’s Roaring ’20s by Raphael Cormack

A well-researched account of the nightlife in Cairo during this time period. One of the world’s most multicultural cities, twentieth-century Cairo was a magnet for the ambitious and talented.

Raphael Cormack unveils the rich histories of independent, enterprising women like vaudeville star Rose al-Youssef (who launched one of Cairo’s most important newspapers); nightclub singer Mounira al-Mahdiyya (the first woman to lead an Egyptian theater company), and her great rival, Oum Kalthoum (still venerated for her soulful lyrics); and other fabulous female stars of the interwar period, a time marked by excess and unheard-of freedom of expression.

Buffeted by crosswinds of colonialism and nationalism, conservatism and liberalism, “religious” and “secular” values, patriarchy, and feminism, this new generation of celebrities offered a new vision for women in Egypt and throughout the Middle East.

cairo

Cairo: Memoir of a City Transformed by Ahdaf Soueif

From the best-selling author of The Map of Lo ve, a bracing firsthand account of the Egyptian revolution.

When throngs of Egyptians gathered in Tahrir Square to demand the fall of Hosni Mubarak’s regime, Ahdaf Soueif—author, journalist, lifelong progressive—was among them. Now, in this deeply personal work, Soueif summons her storytelling talents to trace her city’s—and nation’s—ongoing transformation.

Feluccas on the Nile River

I always had a dream to visit Egypt in Africa for the Great Pyramids and the River Nile. The history and constructions of the Pyramids of Giza amazed me since I read about the seven wonders of the ancient world in my childhood at school. The first look of the pyramids from the land of Egypt was like a throwback to those history books I enjoyed reading. Finally, I made a memorable solo trip to Egypt . I had a fantastic 18 days trip, and during that time I visited several destinations and all the famous historical monuments and cities. So, Egypt is all about the rich history and fascinating culture. It is common to go with guided tours in Egypt, but to be more familiar with the longest histories of ancient Egypt; it is a must to go through some of the best travel guide books. The world’s oldest tourist destination Egypt has a lot to offer for every visitor. Many UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including the oldest three pyramids in Giza Necropolis, got every year all the massive attention from the world tourists. Cruising on the blue Nile River or a traditional Felucca ride is one of the must-do for all. The capital city Cairo itself is one of the oldest and historic and best to explore many beautiful mosques and Egyptian Museum for the vast collections of the great Egyptian civilizations of antiquity.

Besides exploring all the ancient temples in Aswan and Luxor during the reign of Pharaohs, Egypt also has all the lovely beaches for a relaxing trip on the Red Sea and the Mediterranean Sea. And you can’t forget about Queen Cleopatra when in Egypt, visiting the port of Alexandria will take you back to the reign of Cleopatra.

Furthermore, these days it is also fun to enjoy the safari and camping tour in the beautiful oasis of Egypt. I had a unique experience in Bahariya Oasis to explore White Desert, Black Desert, and Crystal Mountain. And what to tell about the mouth-watering Egyptian desserts? I simply loved to have a lot during my Egypt tour.

Yes, Egypt is a vast country; apart from all I mentioned, there are a lot of places to explore. The Nile: A Journey Downriver Through Egypt’s Past and Present (Vintage Departures)

The Nile: Travelling Downriver Through Egypt's Past and Present (Vintage Departures)

The Nile: A Journey Downriver Through Egypt’s Past and Present is a great history and travelogue written by Toby Wilkinson , a famous Egyptologist. Both Egypt and the River Nile are timeless, but the Nile is the life of Egypt, and without the Nile, no Egypt can exist. In the entire book, through the journey from Aswan to Cairo, the author describes the history and importance of the great River Nile and Egypt’s complete dependence on the Nile’s waters.

The Nile brought life to an ancient Egyptian civilization in the past, also in the present playing a vital role in supporting the country’s agriculture and its more than 96% population. Yes, Egypt consists of only the river-land. He wrote how everyone has fallen under the spell of the Nile, and it’s not only the stunning river view. All the pharaohs, emperors from the Great Pyramid of Giza to the Valley of the Kings, Valley of the Queens, Luxor Temple, gained immortality who joined their fate to the Nile.

The Ultimate List of Books to Read Before Your Trip to Egypt

book tour egypt rezensionen

quickwhittravel

What’s the first thing you do when you start thinking about a new destination? For me, it’s look up books! Whether it’s set there or about its history, I want to read anything I can about the place I’m inspired to visit. Or, sometimes, I get inspired to visit a place because of a book I read!

While I’ve always been fascinated by Egypt—ancient and present—I was always too overwhelmed to start “researching” this place I wanted to visit since I was a little girl in Sunday school. I mean, it’s 5,000 years of history, pharaohs, pyramids, mythological creatures, and the most famous river in the world—one that runs from south to north of all things!

So, in my efforts to visit Egypt without being in such obvious and complete ignorance, I started reading. Here are the books I read, starting with the basics.

Everything Ancient Egypt , Crispin Boyer (Children’s Book)

Okay, hear me out! There is so much to learn about ancient Egypt, and unless you’re ready to make it your job to learn 3,000 years of history and become an Egyptologist, you are probably like me and need some bite-sized basics! This is a great place to start, and while it is definitely basic, it’s also full of useful information!

National Geographic Kids Everything Ancient Egypt: Dig Into a Treasure Trove of Facts, Photos, and Fun

More here: The Ultimate List of Foods You Must Try in Egypt

1,000 facts about ancient egypt , nancy honovich (children’s book).

Created by National Geographic like the one above, this one is also a great addition to your Egyptian history starter kit. It’s a bit of a meatier read (1,000 facts is a lot!), but still bite-sized and manageable if you’re still confused on how many Cleopatras there were!

1,000 Facts About Ancient Egypt

See also: How to Right-size Your Expectations of Travel in Egypt

Walking the bible , bruce feiler.

If you’re a Christian, Muslim, or Jew, this book will be an enlightening read! All three religions share the same God and the same first five books of the Bible (and first five books of the Torah and part of the Quran).

The book takes readers through several key locations where Biblical accounts took place, including the parting of the Red Sea, the 10 Commandments on Mount Sinai, and more, all across the Middle East, not just Egypt.

Walking the Bible: A Journey by Land Through the Five Books of Moses

And check out the children’s edition as well, if you’re looking for more bite-sized pieces (I actually prefer this edition myself!).

Walking the Bible (children's edition): An Illustrated Journey for Kids Through the Greatest Stories Ever Told

Read on: The Ultimate List of Things You Can’t Do in Egypt

Egypt and bible history , charles f. aling.

This is a quick read because it’s short book! Some of the content is a little bit in the weeds, but overall, it’s one of the best resources for Bible history in Egypt. Aling writes about the timing of the plagues, the Exodus, who was Pharaoh at the time, historical and archaeological details about how the Israelites came to be in Egypt to begin with, and much, much more.

Egypt and Bible History: From Earliest Times to 1000 B.C.

More here: Why You Should Go to Egypt with Egypt Elite

Death on the nile , agatha christie.

I love a good mystery set in an exotic locale! This is one of my favorite Agatha Christie novels, and as you may have heard, it’s been made into a movie multiple times, most recently in 2022! (The book is better than the movie, as you may imagine.)

Set in 1930s Aswan and the Nile, and partially taking place at the still-standing Old Cataract Hotel , if you’ll be visiting Egypt and particularly Aswan and surrounds, this will be a fun read for you.

Death on the Nile: A Hercule Poirot Mystery: The Official Authorized Edition (Hercule Poirot Mysteries, 17)

Read on: What to Know Before You Visit Egypt

The rise and fall of ancient egypt , toby wilkinson.

This one is the heavy-hitter on this list, friends. If you’re looking for all the gritty details, maps, photos, and more, this is the tome for you! It’s kind of a monster at over 650 pages, but it’s an interesting read for anyone who wants to know everything they can about ancient Egypt.

Liberation square , ashraf kahlil.

The Arab Spring in 2011 took just about everyone by surprise. I remember hearing about it when it happened, but the reporting on it by the media was so skewed, I really had no idea what it accomplished or why it happened. This book shed a lot of light on present-day Egypt as a whole, but also on such an important event in Egypt’s history.

Liberation Square: Inside the Egyptian Revolution and the Rebirth of a Nation

Reminder: Why Egypt is a Safe Place to Visit (even for women!)

Writing of the gods , edward dolnick.

I actually just recently picked this one up from the library! This book, written by a journalist, is about the race to translate hieroglyphics so that modern day people can read the language of ancient Egypt. He who deciphered the Rosetta Stone, found in Rosetta, Egypt, in 1799, would unlock some of the most fascinating mysteries of the ancient world.

The Writing of the Gods: The Race to Decode the Rosetta Stone

Death comes as the end , agatha christie.

Here’s another mystery to round out this list! But it’s not just any mystery set in Egypt, it’s set in ancient Egypt! As with other Christie novels, the body count goes up rather quickly, and the killer is someone you probably didn’t expect (Christie plays dirty—she withhold information as she sees fit!).

Once you’ve read some of the others on this list, you’ll get more out of this book than you would have without prior knowledge of ancient Egypt. You may even want to bring this one along on the flight to Egypt for your trip!
