PDC Darts: All the dates as Pro Tour, European Tour and Premier League return

Watch the World Matchplay on Sky Sports; coverage gets underway on Saturday, July 18

Comment & Analysis @paulprenders

Wednesday 1 July 2020 17:57, UK

Michael van Gerwen

Darts behind closed doors, players marking matches, and the hope of bringing crowds back to watch the biggest names in the PDC - with competitive darts poised to return, we take a look at the state of play.

After an epic six weeks of darting from home with the innovative PDC Home Tour, and a host of online tournaments, a five-day Summer Series will be followed by the World Matchplay - the year's second-biggest tournament - and, as things stand the Premier League, all by the end of July.

Questions still surround the Matchplay, with a decision on where and how the event might look expected by the end of the week.

The PDC are considering two options: a behind-closed-doors tournament at Milton Keynes' Marshall Arena - which remains the most likely - but also a scenario that would see the event in its regular home, Blackpool's Winter Gardens.

PDC Calendar - July schedule

In preparation for that event, and following the suspension of all Pro Tour and European Tour action after Premier League Night Six in Liverpool in March, the Summer Series will kick off the sport's return to action for what looks set to be a busy second half of the year.

Summer Series

Nathan Aspinall beats MVG in Cardiff

With the sport halted, so has the Order of Merit - meaning qualification for the premier ranking events has been impossible. To reignite the competitive edge, and give as many of the Tour Card holders as possible the chance to return to play, the PDC announced the Summer Series in June.

Summer Series to signal darts return

Follow us @SkySportsDarts

With the announcement that prize money - which would have lapsed between March 16 and July 8 - has been removed, the field for the Matchplay will be confirmed at the conclusion of the Summer Series.

The five days of competition will take place behind closed doors and will involve losing players calling the next match on their allocated board. The two 'live' streaming boards will have a referee for their match.

Each day will have standard Players Championship prize money of £75,000, and all prize money counts towards the re-calibrated Order of Merit

Additionally, a place at November's Grand Slam of Darts is up for grabs for the player who tops the five-day Order of Merit for prize money accumulated and has not already qualified for the tournament later this year.

Five days of Players Championship events will get underway in Milton Keynes on Wednesday, July 8 through to Sunday, July 12, and the five days will represent the final qualification events for the World Matchplay.

World Matchplay

World Cup partners Rob Cross and Michael Smith contested this year's World Matchplay final

Blackpool's iconic Winter Gardens and the sunshine of summer is synonymous with the sport's second-biggest event, and the news that the tournament will go ahead on the scheduled dates was welcomed.

The draw will take place on July 12, and the quest for the Phil Taylor Trophy will then begin on July 18 and run through to a conclusion on July 26. Sky Sports will be there for every arrow thrown.

However, for the first time in its history, the prestigious event will not be held in Blackpool, but will go behind closed doors at Milton Keynes' Marshall Arena.

Matchroom Sport have already seen successful hosting of the Championship League and the Tour Championship in snooker, and with an adjoining hotel, the Marshall Arena is set up to provide the most suitable alternative to the Winter Gardens.

The top-16 players from the Order of Merit will qualify automatically, and they will be joined by the top-16 players from a one-year Pro Tour Order of Merit.

Premier League

UNIBET PREMIER LEAGUE 2020.M&S BANK ARENA,.LIVERPOOL,.PIC;LAWRENCE LUSTIG.GLEN DURRANT V DARYL GURNEY.GLEN DURRANT IN ACTION.

As it stands, Birmingham on Thursday, July 30, will see the resumption of the Premier League, halted in Liverpool after Night Six.

The 17-night roadshow is perhaps the most difficult tournament to get up and running, with nights still scheduled for Northern Ireland, Holland, Germany, Scotland, and England.

With guidance differing from country to country, it remains to be seen whether it is possible to stick to the rescheduled plan that was released in June. That includes a double-header in Rotterdam, Judgement Night now at The O2, a trip to the Mercedes Benz Arena in Berlin, and the Play-Offs scheduled for Sheffield in October.

Premier League Darts 2020 - Revised schedule

European tour.

Gerwyn Price

Behind the cancelled World Series, the burgeoning European Tour has perhaps been the hardest hit, with the calendar now reduced to just four additional events from an initial 13. Gerwyn Price was the Belgian Darts Champion, beating Michael Smith in February.

Four remaining events will now take place in Gibraltar, Germany, Czech Republic, and for the first time in PDC history, Hungary.

The 32-player European Championship remains in place, with the qualifying criteria an Order of Merit based on five events rather than 13. The event is due to take place in Westfalenhalle in Dortmund, from October 29 to November 1.

PDC European Tour

Rest of the year.

Peter Wright poses with the Sid Waddell William Hill World Darts Championship Trophy after victory in the Final of the 2020 William Hill World Darts Championship between Peter Wright and Michael van Gerwen at Alexandra Palace on December 31, 2019 in London, England

The caveat remains that all action is subject to change, as guidance to deal with the threat of Covid-19 changes, but the rest of the darting year is yet to be altered.

PDC chief executive Matt Porter told The Darts Show podcast that Players Championship events could be shoehorned into midweeks with players reliant on them for income, and once the Matchplay and Summer Series have played out, further announcements are likely.

The field for the Nordic Darts Masters, the sole remaining event of the World Series, will be made up of eight PDC players and eight local players, while the World Cup will now take place over three days in Graz in November rather than four in Hamburg.

PDC Calender: August-December

An announcement on the field for the World Series Finals is expected in the coming weeks while the World Grand Prix, the Grand Slam of Darts, and Players Championship Finals remain as scheduled and with qualifying criteria likely to mirror that of the Matchplay.

Finally, the World Championship, scheduled for December at Alexandra Palace, remains untouched - the hope being that by then, crowds may be allowed for sporting events and fans will be allowed to gather at the year's biggest Christmas party.

Darts returns to Sky Sports in July, with nine days of coverage from the World Matchplay getting underway on Saturday, July 18, and every day until the final on Sunday, July 26.

‘Grueling’ – Luke Littler hits out at hectic schedule and blames lack of sleep for shock European tour exit

Luke Littler blamed a lack of sleep for his shock European Tour exit on Friday night.

The Nuke was facing Wessel Nijman in the opening round of the Baltic Sea Darts Open.

Littler was left unimpressed after he was dumped out of his latest European Tour competition

Despite being a clear favourite to progress, the 17-year-old sensation fell to a 6-3 defeat to see his campaign come to a surprisingly premature end.

Competing in Kiel, Germany , Littler had less than 24 hours between the competition and his previous outing in the Premier League on Thursday night.

Despite being booed , Littler reached the semi-finals in Leeds at the First Direct Arena where he was beaten by Michael van Gerwen on a night that belonged to hometown boy, Luke Humphries.

But instead of bouncing back from the disappointment, the teenager looked far from his best.

Littler, 17, is currently top of the Premier League Darts leaderboards after winning a second successive weekly event last Thursday.

Furthermore, The Nuke has been incredible on this European Tour - winning the Belgian and Austrian Open.

However, Littler suffered a shock first-round exit at the hands of World No 97 Wessel Nijman.

Cross credits 'new regime' for Euro Tour success in Kiel

Rob Cross (Jonas Hunold/PDC Europe)

Rob Cross revealed his ‘new regime’ is paying dividends after celebrating his second European Tour title in Kiel on Sunday evening. Cross defeated Luke Humphries 8-6 in a thrilling NEO.bet Baltic Sea Darts Open final, defying a nine-darter from the world number one to triumph at the Wunderino Arena. The 2018 World Champion averaged 105.56 to scoop the £30,000 top prize, producing back-to-back 12-darters to deny Humphries a second European Tour title of 2024. Cross kicked off his campaign with a 102 average and a crushing 6-2 victory against Maik Kuivenhoven, before winning through deciding-leg ties against Stephen Bunting and Ritchie Edhouse on Finals Day. The 33-year-old then defeated a spirited Madars Razma in the semi-finals, before capping off a memorable weekend with an epic win against Humphries. “It's an amazing experience to come here and win something again,” admitted Cross, who also toppled Humphries to win his maiden European Tour title 12 months ago. “I always fancy myself to win titles. I seem to perform under scrutiny, and that’s what I did. “To hit back-to-back 12-darters to win was great and I'm happy that I've won something - it's been a while! “I've got a new regime at the minute and it's working. I feel much better, much fresher in the longer days and long may it continue.” Sunday’s decider was the third meeting between Cross and Humphries in the month of May, with the former World Matchplay champion claiming the spoils on Night 14 of the Premier League in Aberdeen. However, Humphries avenged that result in some style last Thursday, dismantling Cross 6-1 with a 109 average on his way to celebrating a fourth nightly win of the campaign in Leeds. “Me and Luke always have good games and I really enjoyed it,” continued Cross, who paid tribute to the sport’s premier player. “He's world number one for a reason - he's the best player on the planet and he’s got the world at his feet. “I like playing Luke and he likes playing me. He’s a really likeable guy and we have a great friendship, but he's probably got the upper hand of late!” Despite his nine-dart heroics, Humphries – also a finalist in Kiel last year – was forced to settle for the £12,000 runner-up prize, although he vowed to take the positives from another impressive campaign. “I don't think I did much wrong to be honest,” claimed the 29-year-old, who averaged 104.38 and landed five 180s in defeat. “I thought I played really well in the final but Rob was even better! He always peaks at the right time, and that is what it takes to be a winner. “It's always great to hit a nine-darter, but of course I'd like the winner's trophy. It's my second nine-darter and I've lost both [games], so maybe it’s not a good omen! “I can’t complain too much though. I was really looking forward to playing this weekend and that showed in my performances.   “Rob's timing was much better than mine. I think that's our fourth [European Tour final] now and it's two-all - I'll get him next time!”
