From the wonderful promenade, to the intriguing Vorarlberg Museum there is something for everyone and the favourable summer climate makes Bregenz a premier tourist destination to explore Lake Constance or even as a base to explore the wider region.

Lets explore the best things to do in Bregenz :

This mighty mountain towers over the town of Bregenz and is a popular tourist destination throughout the region.

The Pfander is reached by the amazing cable car aptly named the Pfanderbhan and is part of what makes the mountain so special – Ascend in the cable cars and see the scenery unfold beneath you and when you eventually get to the top, take in the fantastic views of the epic landscapes that confront you.

Not only can you enjoy the jaw dropping views, there is also an Alpine Park, many hiking trails and a restaurant.

2. Bregenz Promenade

This enchanting promenade by the edges of Lake Constance is a fantastic place to take a walk at any time of the day really – In the morning watch the sun coming up and see the locals having a jog or walking their dogs, or in the evening mingle among the tourists and stroll in the moonlight.

You can watch the various boats and ferries arriving in the harbour, maybe have a drink in one of the cafes, or even be adventurous and hire a paddle boat.

No matter how long or short your stay is at Bregenz, you can’t pass p at least one walk down this wonderful place.

3. Lake Constance

Lake Constance, also known as Bodensee is the third largest fresh water lake in Europe and has parts in Germany, Switzerland and Austria.

The river Rhine flowers into the lake and it serves as a major water source for parts of Western Germany.

As one of the largest lakes in Europe, there are countless towns to visit that lie on this body of water and with three different countries cultures and identities, endless touristic opportunities.

4. Vorarlberg Museum

Right in the centre of Bregenz, next to the train station and only a few minutes’ walk from the promenade, the Vorarlberg Museum is in  a prime location.

The structure has a contrast of modern and classical architecture with a white washed bottom level complete with many windows, while the top section is an imposing concrete square with a huge glass window on one side.

Inside the museum there are great collections from the Vorarlberg region specialising in archaeology, history and folklore.

5. Fort Heldsberg

Part of the extensive Swiss borderline defensive network that was used as a defensive bulwark against the ever growing power of the Axis Powers in 1939, For Heldsberg is a prominent reminder of what was involved during that bloody time period.

This particular fortification at Heldsberg was meant to provide defence against advancing forces on the Rhine and Lake Constance.

What remains of the defence station is now a museum and you can explore the bunker and tunnel network as well as learning about the history of its construction, all of which are complemented by various artefact displays from the era – Heldsberg is a truly interesting place to understand some history from WW2.

6. St. Martins Tower

The striking onion domed tower has come to represent Bregenz and is one of the towns historic symbols.

This 14th century chapel and tower is a quiet and modest place to visit.

On an elevated position in Bregenz when you go up to the top of the wonderful onion domed tower, you can have great views of the town and countryside.

Inside the chapel there are some old frescos and art work – While not overly elaborate, it is still an interesting and thought provoking place to see.

7. Bregenz Festival

This marvellous performing arts festival is held annually in July and August and is a major event in the calendar of Bregenz and Austria.

The festival has been held ever since 1946 and has developed over the years to what it is today.

There are several different venues including the floating stage and barges surrounded by amphitheatres, and theatres where operas are performed.

The most prominent contributor to the festival is the world-renowned Vienna Symphony Orchestra who performs every year.

If you happen to be in Bregenz during the months of the festival you should definitely get tickets for one of the performances – The quality is fantastic.

8. Rappenlochschlucht

Deep in the countryside around 30 minutes’ drive to the south east of Bregenz, the Rappenlochschlucht is an area of natural beauty and one of the largest canyons in Europe with several waterfalls and walking trails to enjoy.

In 2011, the canyon was no longer accessible due to a landslide however it is reopen again and the walkways that wind through the canyon have been maintained and improved.

Enjoy the spectacular formations of the rocks in the canyon, see walk on footbridges that hang over the running water, and see the amazing waterfalls in their full might.

While the hiking involved can be strenuous at times, the Rappenlochschlucht should be manageable for everyone and is a fantastic way to immerse yourself in the Austrian countryside.

9. Schattenburg Castle

This fine medieval castle has stood in the small village of Feldkirch since the 1100’s and has been owned by many Austrian’s in a position of power including the Habsburgs.

The castle sits high on a hill in the centre of the village and is easily recognisable, it has many quaint features remaining such as the wooden beams and gates and iron cross work window frames.

Inside the castle is the Schattenburg museum and also a restaurant with authentic Austrian cuisine, and the village of Feldkirch has a certain charm about it and is a lovely place to walk around.

10. Boat tour on Lake Constance

What is a better way to see the marvellous Lake Constance than to take a boat trip on this beautiful body of water? There are several ferries that can transport you from one city to another and while you are transported you can go out on deck and enjoy the amazing scenery of the lake.

Also, there are several different tour providers who operate on Lake Constance and offer different cruise packages to suit your style.

11. St. Gallus Church

This imposing parish church is on an elevated position in Bregenz so can easily be spotted much like St. Martins Tower.

Parts of the church date back to the 14th century and the artwork in interior is really detailed and admirable.

Pink marble and white stucco is featured throughout the building and there are numerous paintings on display as well as the ornate main altar.

12. Try traditional Austrian Cuisine at the Goldener Hirschen

Austrian cuisine is well known to be homely, hearty and filling, with typical dishes like the Tiroler Grostl (A Bacon, onion and potato fry-up), the Styrian Pot Roast or the Tafelspitz (Boiled Veal). What better way to sample some authentic Austrian culture than to have some traditional food at one of many restaurants in Bregenz.

The Goldener Hirschen is one of the finest restaurants in Bregenz and offers traditional Austrian cuisine at a reasonable price, the atmosphere is also pleasant and there is a garden to enjoy a drink in.

13. Lindau town on Lake Constance

Lindau is both an Island and a small town on the east coast of Lake Constance and is an enchanting place to visit, just 10 minutes’ drive from Bregenz.

Accessible on land by a single strip of land and road that runs into the island, the only other way is by boat.

This small town is historic in its own right and has many churches and old buildings to look around.

Furthermore the harbour has an old lighthouse and is a sublime place to watch the world go by or enjoy a meal in one of the restaurants on the promenade.

The centrepiece of the 2000 year old city is the bulbous, Baroque St. Martin's Tower . In recent years, exceptional architects like Hans Hollein, Jean Nouvel, and Peter Zumthor as well as the "Vorarlberger Baukünstler" group have played an important role in shaping the city’s appearance. The Kunsthaus Bregenz  is an architectural gem located opposite the marina from where boat trips leave to the island village of Lindau and the flower island of Mainau.

About Bregenz

The first settlements in the area of present-day Bregenz were established around 1500 BC. In the Celtic period (from around 500 BC), Bregenz was one of the most strongly fortified places in the region. After the Romans conquered the area, they built the city of Brigantium, a civilian city with a forum, temple district, market halls, a basilica and more. Extensive archaeological remains from this period have been preserved, e.g. mosaics. In the Upper City, Bregenz's old town, the city walls from the Middle Ages are still largely preserved today.

Since 1946, the Bregenz Festival has been an integral part of the city. Each summer, the finest opera al fresco is being presented on the world-largest lakeside stage on the shores of Lake Constance. Bregenz lake stage holds about 7.000 seats and is equipped with the latest state-of-the-art stage technology. Every two years, a different performance is played, and the stage structures change with the performance. Sometimes they become a serious competition to the official city landmark, the St. Martin's Tower.

In addition to the lake stage, also the Bregenz Festival House hosts a large number of performances indoors in the rooms of Kongresskultur Bregenz, providing space for up to 4.500 guests, depending on requirements.

In total, more than 80 performances are held during the festival, attracting approximately 200.000 visitors every year.

Bregenz is the capital of the mountainous state of Vorarlberg in Austria. Situated on the western tip of Austria, Bregenz lies at the foot of Pfänder, the most famous lookout point of the region, and has a front row seat on the south-eastern shores of Lake Constance, Europe’s third-largest freshwater lake. 

The Romans conquered the Alpine region in 15 BC with the small town of Brigantium established along the river, though officially the founding of Bregenz dates back to around 1250.

There are tonnes of things to do in Bregenz so use this one day in Bregenz itinerary to get you started, though you may find that one day is simply not enough. 

MORNING  | ARRIVAL & CHECK IN

Vorarlberg has an efficient, and inexpensive public transit system. As big fans of road trips, one way to navigate this area would be by car, but for the purposes of this itinerary we’re opting for a more sustainable method, arriving by train into the main station of Bregenz and doing the rest on foot.  

Arriving by Train? 

Confusingly, there is also another station with a similar name, Bregenz Hafen (Bregenz Port/Harbour). If you’re staying closer to the lighthouse (Leuchtturm), or the marina, then this stop may be closer and save you some time. 

The first thing you want to do for your one day in Bregenz is get to your accommodation, drop your bags and make a beeline for the city centre to get your bearings. 

DAY TIME | BREGENZ CITY FAMILIARISATION

I’m a big fan of starting off any visit with a walking tour. You can self guide around Bregenz, below you will find some recommendations which may be of interest, alternatively, join a private or small group walking tour , or guided city tour , to make the most of your visit. 

During the Festive season, the city’s night watchman guides visitors around the medieval city centre.  Check with the local tourist information centre at Rathausstraße 35a, for more information. Check their opening hours prior to visiting as they’re often closed on public holidays.

A self guided tour of Bregenz should include the medieval city centre:

Ehre-guta square.

Named after a local legend, Guta, who saved the town from attack by the Appenzeller. If you’re visiting in winter, keep an ear out at 9pm when the night watchmen call out “Ehreguta” to honour her courage and keep the story alive.

Take a stroll up Meissnerstiege to see the Deuring Schlossle, a beautiful manor home which was formerly a luxury hotel. Now only visible from the outside, take a minute to awe at the Baroque tower that is said to have inspired paintings by Turner and Schiele.

The Old Town Hall

The Old Town Hall is the city’s largest half-timbered house. In a former life, it was the administrative home of the city until the 19th Century.

Today it’s used by private residents.

The Martinstrurm (St. Martin’s Tower)

This well-preserved Baroque tower with a chapel, 14th-century Gothic frescoes, and roof in the shape of an onion is the largest of its kind in Europe. 

It was constructed on the original site of a factory which stood at the time the city was founded c. 1250. 

If your visit to Bregenz falls between May-October, you’re in for a treat and able to explore the tower on the inside. 

Be sure to climb as high as you can for a picturesque panorama over Bregenz and the Oberstadt, the mountains, Pfänder, and Lake Constance from the window gallery.

Walk the Explorers Trail in Bregenz

The city has put together a one-hour walking trail along Stadtsteig which takes visitors up the incline to the Upper Town (Oberstadt) along quaint cobbled streets, past the medieval city walls, the monastery Thalbach, and the parish church of St Gallus. 

Take some time to explore the boutiques, cafes, and galleries stocked with unique pieces by local artists before making your way back to the town centre. 

Tip: At this intersection there’s a quaint local water fountain with potable water to refill your water bottle.

MID MORNING | LAKE CONSTANCE

If the weather is fine, do as I did, and jump at the opportunity to spend some time on the water.  

One way to explore is on two wheels.  With well developed bike lanes, there is the opportunity to get some exercise and fresh air along one of the most popular routes, from Bregenz to the cities of Lindau and Friedrichshafen in Germany. 

Note: the full route is 36km which was too far for this writer. A good alternative is to ride one way and make use of the boat service operated by Vorarlberg Lines to take you back across the Lake to your starting point.

It is possible to stand-up paddleboard on the lake, or for a more relaxed activity, I can recommend the peddle-boats around the bay area.  For larger groups, up to six, electric boats are also available. 

Keen to swim in Lake Constance? 

There are public swimming pools (Strandbad) with paddling pools for small children, with slides, and 400m of shoreline. 

LUNCH | MARKET 

Frequented by locals to source high quality produce for their kitchens, Bregenz is home to a lively weekly market with vendors selling fresh ingredients from across the region. 

Vendors are friendly and hospitable, many of whom speak English. 

For 2022, the Züg & Sacha series will be operating at the Kornmarktplatz in Bregenz where visitors can procure local artistry, regional delicacies and wine, and sustainable products directly from the producer.

If a sit-down meal with a view to die for is more your thing, head to Pier69 on the waterfront of Lake Constance. 

Watch as the boats which travel across the Lake dock, keen cyclists and joggers exercise along the promenade while you dine amidst the nautical theme and casual fine dining atmosphere. 

Staff are friendly and seemingly bilingual. Everything on the menu was mighty tasty but you can’t go past the regional delicacy of Kässpätzle , served with crispy roasted onions.

Kunsthaus bregenz.

Culture vultures and lovers of modern art should head to Kunsthaus Bregenz, one of Europe’s leading galleries for contemporary art. 

With its translucent glass facade, juxtaposed against the older nearby buildings, the KUB as it’s known, is one of Bregenz’s newer funkier landmarks. 

Designed by internationally renowned Swiss architect Peter Zumthor, who won the Mies van der Rohe Award and the Pritzker Prize, the KUB opened in 1997. It has fast become one of the town’s most important cultural attractions with the rotating exhibitions featuring outstanding contemporary art attracting visitors from all over the world.

Exhibitions rotate regularly so do check the website before visiting if there’s something specific you wish to see.

Bregenz Festival

Visiting Bregenz in summer? 

Be sure to grab tickets and discover the Bregenz Festival.

A cultural highlight of the summer since 1946, the Bregenzer Festspiele, as it’s known locally, is an operatic performance of epic proportions running on a bi-annual cycle, which sees Bregenz transform into a mini Hollywood on water. 

Floating elegantly on the third-largest freshwater lake in Central and Western Europe, is the world’s largest floating stage, Seebühne. At the third International Opera Awards ceremony in London in April of 2015, Bregenz Festival won in the category Festival of the Year honouring it as the best music theatre festival.

This internally renowned festival, sees some 200,000 visitors annually travelling from across Europe and the world to see the theatrical masterpieces performed here. Previous shows have included Rigoletto, Carmen, and West Side Story.

If you’re reading this and thinking ‘wow this all looks so familiar’, it may be because you recognise this set from the 2008 James Bond hit Quantum of Solace in which 007 chases villains across the floating stage.

At the time of visiting, crews were breaking down the stage, making way for the next production. If you’re curious to see the current state of the stage, you can check the webcam feed online.

For summer 2022, the show is one of Puccini’s most popular and best-loved operas Madam Butterfly (Madama Butterfly).

SUNDOWN | SUNSET STEPS

End your day in Bregenz as you watch the sun sink into Lake Constance. Pack a picnic, rest your tired feet in the water as it laps at the steps and unwind with this jaw-dropping view.

DINNER | WEISS

This hip restaurant, and bar should be your destination for dinner. 

Serving up locally-sourced ingredients of the best quality, many of the staff are Bregenzerwald-locals such as the owner Milena Broger, who is one of the youngest top chefs in all German-speaking countries.

The address has a long-standing tradition as a restaurant, and the name Weiss is a throwback to its heritage.

In short, the appetisers are spectacular, as are the creative seasonal cocktails. Time-permitting, the 10 course tasting menu is well worth the money.

MORE THINGS TO DO IN BREGENZ (IF YOU HAVE TIME)

Ok, so it’s technically not Bregenz, (it’s within the bounds of Dornbirn, Vorarlberg’s biggest city), but despite that, I think it’s worthy of inclusion in this list.

On a clear day, mountain peaks, the Rhine Valley, and the grandeur of Lake Constance is visible from the top, making it a popular lookout point. A gateway for many beautiful hiking trails which have their starting point here, or the non-hikers can do as I did and enjoy the panorama from the selfie spot and watch the sun set. There’s also a restaurant in the sky at 976 metre above sea level, which offers spectacular views from its terrace.

Lange nacht der museen (Long Night of Museums)

A cultural event in which museums and cultural institutions open late into the evening for one night only. Visitors purchase a pass which grants access to numerous museums in Vorarlberg and the surrounding area with one ticket. 

Bregenz last participated on 2 October 2021. It’s expected to return in 2022. If you’re interested, it’s best to keep an eye on this website as more information becomes available.

WHERE TO STAY IN BREGENZ

There are plenty of places to stay in Bregenz , many of which are located along the waterfront, promenade and in the Lower Town (Unterstadt) around Kornmarktplatz.

With such a well organised transit system, it is possible to stay out of Bregenz in places such as Dornbirn and travel into Bregenz by train for the day.

Bregenz in Austria: The Best Things to Do and See

Oh, Bregenz! You really captured us with your beauty and charm. We’ve had the pleasure of visiting Vorarlberg’s state capital on two occasions now. In this blog article, we want to share with you our personal travel tips for Bregenz .

Every year, there is a big festival hosted by Bregenz, right on the lake front. It’s so well known that this annual festival often comes up when talking about Bregenz. It goes without saying that we certainly couldn’t miss the spectacular opera performance ourselves. So we share our experiences and impressions of the Bregenz Festival later in this article.

What else can you do in Bregenz apart from the festival? Read on to find out some of the most beautiful sights we visited and our personal highlights.

Oberstadt – aka. the Upper Town of Bregenz

The Oberstadt is a maze of historic streets , and named rather appropriately too, as this upper part of Bregenz is slightly elevated. We can definitely recommend a walk through this part of Bregenz.

The Upper Town is surprisingly tranquil with the tourist bustle from the lakeshore muffled by distance. If you walk through the Upper Town, then you will notice that there are very few restaurants or shops – but lots of pretty, cobblestone streets and historic timber-framed houses instead.

Attractions in the Oberstadt (Upper Town)

Although the Oberstadt (Upper Town) is already an attraction in itself, there are a few specific places that we would highly recommend you to stop by. First on the list would be the view from Martinsturm Tower (admission: 3.50 Euro). The Martinsturm is the landmark of Bregenz and also home to a museum. It’s well known for its fantastic view over Bregenz and Lake Constance from the last floor.

From Kirchstraße, you also get a great view of the Oberstadt (Upper Town), as well as the very pretty Deuringschlössle (a small castle). You can reach Kirchstraße from the Oberstadt (Upper Town), by simply following the Meißnerstiege and then you’ll pass the parish church of St. Gallus. If you keep going down the Kirchstraße, then you will also reach the narrowest house in Europe (Kirchstraße 29), before finding yourself again in modern Bregenz.

Bregenz Lakeside and Harbour

When you’re in Bregenz, it’s almost impossible not to find yourself by the waterfront on multiple occasions. Here is where you will find the main attraction of the city during festival periods: the magnificent stage situated on the lake. (We’ll share more about that in the next section about the Bregenz Festival).  

Of course, there are other things to see by the lakeside too. The Fischersteg is also a popular photo spot. This white pavilion actually houses a bar and on a nice day, you can enjoy a glass of Prosecco and watch the sunset.

Speaking of sunset : Bregenz comes with the bonus of facing the north west, which means beautiful sunset evenings on the shores of Lake Constance. Get an ice cream and then walk east along the lakeshore to the Sunset Steps – known as Molo to the locals. From there you have the best sunset view in summer.

Kunsthaus Bregenz – Art Gallery

You simply cannot pass through Bregenz without a visit to the Kunsthaus Art Gallery ! The impressive Kunsthaus Bregenz houses a collection of international contemporary art and in our opinion, is simply a must when visiting the state capital.

Since the exhibitions changes from time to time, we can’t say too much about the content – because it’s almost certain that you’ll be seeing a different exhibition than we did. Just let yourself be surprised by whatever it will be. We really enjoyed our visit on both occasions we were there – which says a lot, because usually we rarely find ourselves in museums.

Vorarlberg Museum

As mentioned, we are not huge on spending time in museums. However, we think that the Vorarlberg Museum in Bregenz is definitely worth seeing, even if just for the architecture alone. The new museum building was opened in 2013 and we honestly found it very impressive.

The Vorarlberg Museum shows both the history and the modern present of Vorarlberg and is larger and more extensive than we expected. Perfect activity for a rainy day. Small photo tip : you can get a really amazing view of Lake Constance through the panoramic window on the 4th Floor.

View from the Pfänder Summit

The Pfänder is the local mountain of Bregenz , which rises above the city on the eastern shores of Lake Constance. From the top, you are rewarded with a fantastic view of Lake Constance and Bregenz. Of course you can also hike up the Pfänder yourself, but most people (like us), will opt to go up with the famous Pfänderbahn.

In just 6 minutes, you go from the Old Town of Bregenz to the mountain station at over 1000 meters above sea level . Once at the top you can either enjoy a nice drink or you can do a little hike.

Small drawback: If you’re hoping to catch the sunset from the mountain top during summer, then you should best prepare to go back down by foot, as the last train departs the mountain station at 7pm. However, you can also request (for a fee of 68 Euros per half hour), to depart later in the evening.

Stand Up Paddling on Lake Constance

Our visit to Bregenz was made all the more memorable with an exciting “first time” experience . Until then we had never been on a stand-up paddle (SUP) board before. (Apart from Romeo’s short experience in France .)

Lake Constance seemed more than inviting for a first timer. Although a bit shaky at first, we got the hang of the movement fairly quickly. Overall, being on the SUP board was much more exhausting than we had expected, because it requires a lot of muscle work to keep your balance.

Alex, our guide and founder of Ländle SUP , also provided us with some helpful tips to save us from tumbling into the water. We would recommend doing a SUP tour either early in the morning or later in the afternoon, when the lake is at its quietest.

If you visit Bregenz during the summer months, then you will most likely hear about the Bregenz Festival . Between mid-July and mid-August, the famous floating stage turns into an important venue for the festival and attracts a huge number of visitors from all around! (An astounding 7,000 guests gather around to watch from the stands.)

They create a new performance sequence every two years. So as in 2019 was the first year of Giuseppe Verdi’s Rigoletto , that means it will be performed again in 2021. (In 2020, the Bregenz Festival has been cancelled due to Covid.)

Rigoletto was the first opera that the both of us ever seen performed, and it was made all the more special that it was here at the Bregenz Festival. As opera amateurs, we cannot provide much insight or comparison on this matter. However, we can confirm that the performance was so spectacularly performed that we never got bored during the entire two hours of show time. We would even go as far as to recommend this to those who have never seen or have no idea about operas.

Tip: See the Lake Stage / Backstage Tour

The floating stage is actually open and freely accessible to the public during the day. Even if you do not have tickets for the performance, you can always have a (free) peek at the spectacular stage.

However, a backstage tour proved to be even more impressive. During the festival period, these backstage tours run several times a day. It costs 7.50 Euros per person and takes about 50 minutes. As part of the tour, you will also visit the Festival Hall and walk on the stage.

Of course, you will also learn some exciting things about the show, which you can then pay more attention to during the performance. Getting to peek in behind the scenes definitely instills a greater appreciation and anticipation for the opera show! It’s something we can highly recommend!

A few practical tips for visiting the Bregenz Festival

If you aren’t able to take a warm blanket from your hotel with you, then you should at least bring something warm to wear, as it can get rather cool in the summer evenings by the lake shore. You could also consider bringing a cushion for your seat, as you’d be sitting on folding chairs up on the grandstand.

During the performance evenings, many of the nearby restaurants get full rather quickly, so we would recommend you to reserve a table for dinner in advance. The same goes for hotel bookings.

During the performance there is a strict ban on photography and mobile phones . Therefore, you really only see photos of the final applause. However, you should really stick to the ban, because the bright light displays are really distracting for other spectators who are sitting behind you.

And last but not least: familiarise yourself with the performance in advance. Otherwise, you will have trouble following the plot. Although translations are shown on the left and right hand sides of the stage, that alone is not enough to understand the whole show. We just find that the performance is much more beautiful and exciting, if you actually get what’s happening.  

Lieblingscafé (featured in the first photo):   If you are looking for a special breakfast, then the Lieblingscafé is “the place to be”. There are many vegetarian and vegan delicacies here. The café is located in the heart of the old town down a small alleyway. Highly recommend!

Bahi (in the 2nd and 3rd photo):   A really great place, where the café also combines with co-working spaces and a yoga studio. You can enjoy a coffee here during the day or come over for a delicious lunch.

Pier 69 :   Located right on the harbour and a good choice if you want to eat near the shore. They serve breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Fritsch am Berg :   Just outside Bregenz, you’ll find this Fine Dining Restaurant in Lochau. The restaurant belongs to a rather fancy hotel on a mountain. Depending on the table, you can dine with a nice view over the lake.

Option 1: Hotel Schwärzler

During our first visit to Bregenz, we stayed in a lovely, tranquil place called Hotel Schwärzler . The rooms were just beautiful, with a lot of wood, muted colours, and a balcony – precisely our taste in style. The hotel is not located directly in the city centre. However, you can borrow some bikes from the hotel. It only takes a few minutes to reach the old town by bike. (Note: the return journey takes longer, as it’s more uphill.)

As we expected, the breakfast was excellent. Very high quality and with a very beautiful garden scenery, top notch stuff! Another bonus is how dedicated the hotel owner is at Hotel Schwärzle. Rarely have we met such a dedicated hotel owner and we feel that he truly cares about the welfare of his guests.

Option 2: Hotel Hirschen in the Bregenz Forest

If you’d rather not spend the night in the city, then we have a special recommendation for you: the Hotel Hirschen . Located in the Bregenz Forest, this place is an absolute gem and it’s only a 30 minute drive to the centre of Bregenz. For those attending the festival, this hotel also offers a bus shuttle service for their guests so you don’t have to drive in the evenings.

The Hotel Hirschen is a dream of a hotel. The ambiance is so special with a very quaint yet stylish feel. Cozy, but still very special. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and can only highly recommend this hotel if you prefer a more natural setting.

10. Take a Road Trip to Feldkirch and Schattenburg Castle

Get ready to embark on a thrilling road trip to Feldkirch and Schattenburg Castle, where you’ll be transported back in time and immersed in the rich history and culture of Vorarlberg.

Start your journey by driving to Feldkirch, the old district capital of Vorarlberg. Here, you can explore the stunning Schattenburg Castle, which offers breathtaking views of the surrounding mountainous landscape.

The castle also has a local museum and Romanesque crucifix, providing a glimpse into the region’s fascinating past.

After visiting Schattenburg Castle, head to Gebhardsberg, where you can hike up to the Burg Hohenbregenz ruins and pilgrimage chapel. The Ferdinand-Kinz-Weg trail is a must-visit, as it offers spectacular panoramic views of the Rhine Valley and Lake Constance.

On the way back to Bregenz, stop at one of the many quaint villages along the route for a taste of the local cuisine and a chance to meet the friendly locals.

A road trip to Feldkirch and Schattenburg Castle is the perfect way to experience the rich history and natural beauty of Vorarlberg.

11. Admire the Views from Gebhardsberg

Take in the stunning panoramic views of the Rhine Valley and Lake Constance as you hike up to the Burg Hohenbregenz ruins and pilgrimage chapel on Gebhardsberg. This scenic hill offers a breathtaking perspective of the cityscape and natural beauty that surrounds it.

As you trek up to the top, you’ll pass through lush forests and quaint neighborhoods, making it a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of the city.

At the top of Gebhardsberg, you’ll find the Burg Hohenbregenz ruins, which date back to the 13th century. The ruins offer an interesting glimpse into the past and provide a great opportunity for photography.

The pilgrimage chapel nearby, dedicated to St. Gebhard, the patron saint of Vorarlberg, is also worth a visit.

And if you’re feeling adventurous, take the Ferdinand-Kinz-Weg trail, which is a popular hiking route that runs through the mountain and offers even more incredible views of the surrounding landscape.

12. Cruise Along Lake Constance (Bodensee)

Let’s explore the stunning beauty of Lake Constance by cruising along its waters and soaking in the picturesque views around us. A scenic one-hour cruise around the lake is a must-do activity in Bregenz.

You’ll be mesmerized by the stunning views of the lake and the surrounding mountains as you glide along the clear waters. The cruise takes you past charming villages, lush green meadows, vineyards, and fruit orchards that dot the shoreline.

You can choose from a variety of boats that offer different amenities, including outdoor decks, indoor seating, and refreshments on board. The boats depart from the pier near the city center, and you can either book your tickets in advance or purchase them on the day of the cruise.

10 things to do in bregenz (austria).

• Tea Gudek Šnajdar

With so many fun things to do in Bregenz, this lovely town is a great place to visit in Austria. Located between the high mountains and a tranquil Lake Constance, Bregenz, the capital of Vorarlberg, is filled with beautiful architecture, charming streets, numerous local shops, engaging public art and some fantastic museums. I loved exploring that town and will definitely visit it again. Here is the Culture Tourist’s guide to Bregenz with things to do and see in that beautiful town.

Things to do in Bregenz

Bregenz has a long history spanning 3500 years. In around 15 BC, Romans founded an important centre called Brigantium there. With its large pedestrian area, beautiful nature surrounding it, and many cultural events and things to do in Bregenz, today it’s a liveable town worth visiting.

1 – Learn more about Bregenz during the guided tour

Filled with numerous fascinating stories and many buildings with exciting history, you’ll get the best introduction to Bregenz during the guided tour. So, the first thing I did during my trip to Bregenz was joining one of them. My guide Karin told me about its history, exciting events from the past, local legends, fascinating residents and stories that make Bregenz such an interesting place.

We climbed the Saint Martin’s Tower and enjoyed the view of Lake Constance from it. We peeked in some of the Bregenz Upper Town courtyards, explored wall paintings on some of its buildings and tried delicious chocolates from a local shop in Bregenz Lower Town. It was a great way to get to know the city better than I would if only walking around it by myself.

2 – Wander around the Bregenz Upper Town

Wandering around the narrow streets of the Upper Town in Bregenz will make you feel like you travelled back in the Middle Ages. It’s home to numerous beautiful wooden-been houses decorated with wall paintings, small statues and flowers. One of its most interesting buildings is Deuringschlössle, a medieval castle rebuilt in the Baroque time.

Built by Romans, Saint Martin Tower (Martinsturm) was rebuilt a few times throughout history. A chapel on its ground floor is home to some fascinating 14th-century wall paintings. On its top, you’ll find the largest Baroque bulb-shaped tower in Central Europe. The building is home to a small museum where you can learn about Bregenz’s history and enjoy a panoramic view of Bregenz and Lake Constance from its top floor.

3 – Take a ride on Pfänder Cable Car

One of my favourite things to do in Bregenz was a ride on Pfänder Cable Car . The ride lasts only around six minutes, during which you get to see Bregenz from a different perspective. Once on its upper station, you can see vast mountains covered by coniferous forests. And enjoy a beautiful panoramic view of Lake Constance, Bregenz, the Vorarlberg region, Swiss mountains and Germany.

⤷ TIP : If you visit Bregenz in summer during the high season, I advise planning a Pfänder Cable Car ride earlier in the morning or later in the afternoon when it’s not too busy.

4 – Visit Kunsthaus Bregenz

Art and culture are celebrated in Bregenz, and you can feel that on its every corner. The city is home to some fantastic museums and galleries worth exploring.

Kunsthaus Bregenz is a place that shouldn’t be missed by any art lover visiting Bregenz. One of the leading European contemporary art galleries opened its doors in 1997. Its building was designed by the Swiss architect Peter Zumthor. He created a neutral cube that can be adjusted for contemporary art exhibitions. I was especially amazed by how he used natural light to illuminate the gallery’s interior.

Kunsthaus Bregenz doesn’t have a permanent display but hosts around four temporary exhibitions each year. During my visit, they displayed three artworks by Anna Jermolaewa, an artist who will represent Austria at the Venice Biennale in 2024.

The rest of the building was reserved for the exhibition by Michael Armitage, a British artist born in Kenya. I was blown away by the paintings made by this talented painter and fantastic storyteller. He isn’t painting on canvases. Instead, he’s using Lubugo bark cloth for his artworks. That’s why you can see holes and ‘scares’ in his paintings.

5 – Stroll alongside the Lake Constance

Lake Constance is one of the largest European lakes and gives Bregenz a Mediterranean town feel. What especially fascinated me was that while standing at the Lake Constance shore in Bregenz, you see three countries: Austria, Germany and Switzerland. It’s such an incredible cultural meeting place.

Unlike its neighbouring countries, the shore on the Austrian part of Lake Constance is almost entirely open to the public. You can stroll alongside a lovely promenade and enjoy the lake view. If you’d like to spend a day on Lake Constance you can rent a small boat or pedal boat. Or even go on some of the special boat rides organised around the lake by Vorarlberg lines .

6 – Try some chocolates at Xocolat

Whenever travelling, I’m always looking for some lovely local shops. Talking with local producers and trying and purchasing their products is a great way to dive deeper into the local culture. The shop I especially liked in Bregenz was Xocolat . It’s a small chocolate manufacturer creating some of the most delicious and creative chocolates. You’ll find some unusual flavours like yuzu, mocha, different kinds of fruits, etc.

They have special boxes with drawings of Bregenz and the Voralberg region on them. You can pick the box design you like, fill it with chocolates to your taste and create a perfect Bregenz souvenir to take home with you.

7 – Visit Vorarlberg Museum

Another excellent cultural venue to visit in Bregenz is the Vorarlberg Museum . It’s dedicated to the region’s art, history and culture. Its facade texture of plastic bottle bottom models makes its architecture quite interesting. The museum hosts permanent and temporary exhibitions offering insight into this beautiful region. Among them, especially interesting is the one about the Brigantium, the Roman town which was a predecessor to modern Bregenz.

Located on its top floor, the Panorama Room has a fantastic view of Lake Constance. I could sit there for hours and enjoy the magnificent view. A fun little thing the museum does is provide a camera obscura in front of the room, so you can observe the lake like a historical painter would.

⤷ TIP : Vorarlberg Museum has a lovely cafe and museum shop on its ground floor. I definitely recommend visiting both!

8 – Watch the show at Bregenz Festival

Bregenz is the Vorarlberg region’s cultural capital, and it defends that title by organising numerous fantastic cultural events. Bregenz Festival is the best known among them. It’s organised annually in July and August. The festival is unique because of its stage, which is the largest floating lake stage in the world. They change the stage design and the festival’s leading opera every two years. During my visit in 2023, they were showing Madame Butterfly. However, in 2024 and 2025, the Bregenz Festival will host Der Freischütz opera by Carl Maria von Weber, which will also have a new stage design.

With its fantastic setting, great production and impressive cast, the Madame Butterfly at Bregenz Festival was one of the best operas I have ever seen. Its performances are in the evening, so you can enjoy the sunset over the lake at the show’s beginning.

I also enjoyed taking a behind-the-scenes tour before the show started. During it, I could see backstage, learn interesting facts about the festival, and even walk onstage.

⤷ TIP : The auditorium is on the lake, so be sure to bring warm clothes and even a small blanket with you because it could get chilly in the evening.

9 – Explore some of Bregenz’s public art

Combining historical neighbourhoods and old houses with modern buildings and contemporary public art gives Bregenz a unique charm.

You’ll stumble upon many statues while strolling around the city. In front of the Kunsthaus Bregenz, you’ll see ‘A Porsche made of Concrete’. It was made in 1971 by Gottfried Bechtold. One of my favourite public artworks in Bregenz was an untitled work by Heinz Gappmayr. In a massive twelve metres long inscription, he wrote a tiny measurement, ‘0,0000000001 mm’. With it, he wanted to stress the difference between the idea of something and how it actually looks like.

Another interesting public artwork in Bregenz is ‘Homage to Brigantium’, made by Herbert Albrecht, one of the most important Austrian contemporary sculptors. It’s located on the Lake Constance promenade. In front of the Bregenz Festival building is the 6,90 metres tall statue ‘Ready Maid’ by the local Bregenz artist Gottfried Bechtold.

10 – Get a glass of milk at Milchpilz

Another unique local place I loved in Bregenz was Milchpilz . It’s a mushroom-shaped kiosk where you can buy different kinds of flavoured milk. I tried the coconut chocolate one and loved it! These kinds of stalls in the shape of mushrooms selling milk and dairy products were common in West Germany and Austria in the 1950s. The one in Bregenz is the last in Austria, still having its original purpose. Visiting that unique place should definitely be on your list of things to do in Bregenz.

Some additional tips for visiting Bregenz

Where to eat in bregenz.

Bregenz is home to some pretty decent restaurants and I didn’t had a bad meal during my time there.

I recommend  Pier 69  in the Lake Constance harbour for breakfast or brunch. I had breakfast there on my first day and loved it! Another place I’d suggest for brunch is the Vorarlberg Museum Café . They have different kinds of sandwiches, focaccias, salads, delicious cakes and fresh fruit yoghurts.

I had a great dinner at the Hotel Schwärzler and recommend it. Another place I’d suggest for dinner is Buehnedrei at the Bregenz Festival building. And I also loved the KUB  Café Bar . I had dinner on their terrace and enjoyed great food and a view of the beautiful Kunsthaus Bregenz building.

What to buy as souvenirs in Bregenz

To bring some edible souvenirs home, visit the Xocolat Shop in Bregenz. I bought a couple of chocolate boxes there during my visit to Bregenz, and everyone loved them! Vorarlberg Museum has a nice museum shop with some lovely Bregenz-inspired souvenirs. You’ll find a merchant stall at the Bregenz Festival before the performance, so buying something inspired by it could make a great souvenir from Bregenz, too.

Besides these places, you’ll find many local shops in Bregenz where you can buy locally made products of good quality and excellent design.

Where to stay in Bregenz

During my trip to Bregenz, I stayed at the Hotel Schwärzler . It’s a 100% climate-neutral hotel with a beautiful interior design. They are also collaborating with local producers, so you’ll find their products in the hotel rooms and a restaurant. It’s a great hotel I definitely recommend for staying in Bregenz.

With so many great things to do in Bregenz, it’s wise to plan your visit to that charming Austrian town in advance. It’s a beautiful place filled with lovely architecture, outstanding museums, and so much to explore.
