Tour This: Flagstaff Brewery Trail

Eat & Drink

Tour this: flagstaff brewery trail.

The popular Flagstaff Brewery Trail introduces beer drinkers to northern Arizona's craft brew scene, taking you from crisp ales to local lagers.

The Flagstaff Brewery Trail (formerly the Flagstaff-Grand Canyon Ale Trail) makes a bold claim by stating northern Arizona is the craft beer hub of the Southwest.

While beer aficionados in Phoenix and Tucson may balk at such a statement, it's one that northern Arizona can back up. Here, the enthusiasm surrounding hometown brews is as palpable—and palatable—as the scent of pine trees in the air.

And the Flagstaff Brewery Trail Passport is your golden ticket to fully experiencing it.

Pick up this self-guided tour of local craft breweries at the Flagstaff Visitor Center or print out a copy at home. Complete the tour by visiting all nine breweries and in whatever length of time you want and whenever you want. Turn in your completed form at one of two Flagstaff visitor centers and receive a free commemorative pint glass.

Stop 1: Dark Sky Brewing Company

This brewery pays homage to Flagstaff's designation as the first International Dark Sky community in both its name and starry-themed decor. Order some Pizzicleta wood-fired pizza for the table and enjoy with your choice of craft brew with names such as Rye'd Open Spaces (IPA), Endless Nights (stout), and Woodland Cathedral (barleywine).

Stops 2 and 3: Beaver Street Brewery and Lumberyard Brewing Company

Beaver Street Brewery and its sister brewery, Lumberyard Brewing Company , are staples in the Northern Arizona brew scene. Opened in 1994, Beaver Street Brewery was the only brewpub in historic downtown Flagstaff for years. As such, the beers are time-tested and beloved. Beaver Street has a classic feel with its checkerboard floors, big wooden bar and lots of odes to the nearby train tracks. The Railhead Red Ale is a reliable, caramel-malted and full-bodied beer, also a Great American Beer Festival Gold Medal Winner.

Stops 4 and 5: Mother Road Brewing Company

You can thank John Steinbeck—who proclaimed Route 66 the "Mother Road" in his literary classic The Grapes of Wrath —for this brewery's name. Opened near a stretch of the route in 2004, the popular Mother Road Brewing Company has expanded to two locations a little more than a mile apart: the original Pike location in downtown Flagstaff and the Butler location in a more residential area. Mother Road's legions of fans come from near and far for a taste. Best to book a room nearby after a pint of midnight-colored Lost Highway Double Black IPA, a robust beer at a whopping 8% ABV that's a blend of espresso, chocolate and orange.

Stop 6: Grand Canyon Brewing Company + Distillery

The beers at the Williams, Arizona-based Grand Canyon Brewing Company are inspired by outdoor adventures at nearby landmarks, including the Horseshoe Bend brew, which includes grapefruit and tropical flavors with an undercurrent of caramel. The brewery even organizes rafting trips through the Grand Canyon on the Colorado River—and there's a beer that captures the spirit of a refreshing, roaring rapid (Grand Canyon Expeditions Wheat Ale), which is perfectly fine to enjoy on dry land.

Stop 7: Historic Brewing Co.'s Barrel + Bottle House

You'll find more than a dozen housemade beers at Historic Brewing Barrel + Bottle House's Flagstaff location, and reading about the brews is almost as fun as tasting them. Creative names include Deer Lord, Piehole Porter (a customer favorite) and Joe Rye'd, with kegs rotating often. Plus, for the vine-inclined, there's wine from sister-company Grand Canyon Wine Co. Grab a flight of six beers or wines, served on a book (the vibe at Historic is a bit hipster), or try every single tap for $40.

Stop 8: Flagstaff Brewing Company

At this downtown Flagstaff staple, brewing applies to both beer and beans as the location serves both as a pub and coffee shop all day, every day. So, whether you prefer to say you stopped at Flagstaff Coffee Company or Flagstaff Brewing Company , you won't leave thirsty. And if you prefer still more options, ask to see the "whiskey list." FBC, as it's known, serves one of the most extensive collections of single malts in the country, including some no longer in production.

Stop 9: Wanderlust Brewing

What better way to conclude your Flagstaff craft beer journey than with a stop at this small brewery inspired by the love of travel and exploration? Using traditional methods, with "a particular soft spot for Saisons and Farmhouse-style ales," owner Nathan Friedman makes each brew his own with unique twists such as substituting puffed jasmine rice for wheat in the Jasmine Terrace Rice Saison or adding organic fruit puree to his sours. The taproom is dog-and-child friendly. Food isn't served here, but guests are welcome to bring their own or buy from the food trucks frequently parked outside.

As the (older) sister brewery to Lumberyard Brewing Company, this establishment shares some of the same signature beers found at the sister pub while also offering a variety of its own unique handcrafted beers including its Red Rock Raspberry Ale and the Midnight Black IPA. Beaver Street is one of our first choices for a sit-down dining experience as they offer a warm, inviting brewpub atmosphere, along with extensive food and cocktail menus. 3 of the best Flagstaff and Sedona Brewery Tours

Large tracts of Arizona may be arid, but these top three brewery tours in Sedona and Flagstaff are anything but dry.

brewery tours in flagstaff az

(Photo: Winetoursofsedona.com)

Sedona and Flagstaff are 30 miles apart and one thing these two Arizona cities have in common is a surprising number of wineries and breweries. You will find that some excellent regional beers are crafted in the heart of the desert by skilled brewers. And a tour of these breweries is a great alterative activity to the outdoor pursuits for which the Red Rock Country is best known. Here are three of the best brewery tours, taking into account factors such as the value for money and number of beers samples provided. Cheers.

Verde Valley Brewery Tour

Literally meaning ‘green,’ the Verde Valley is given its name by the life-giving waters of Oak Creek, which runs through Sedona. And that river is also a great source of water for the various breweries dotted around the city. One is simply named Oak Creek Brewery. Another, Verde Brewery. This private excursion is designed to tailor the brewery tour to your preferences. Over the four hours you can stop by each of the four breweries open to visitors, or spend a little more time at two or three, allowing some space for adding in some sightseeing on the journey between each place. From $234 per person.

Book at Fareharbor.com

Historic Flagstaff Downtown Microbrewery Tour

A similar type of tour can be taken in Flagstaff, which is home to at least a dozen breweries, most of which are clustered around a five-block area of the Southside neighborhood. Following a very similar style to the Sedona trip above, this is a private tour, for a minimum of two people, which you can curate to explore beers fitting your preferred tastes. Visit up to four micro-breweries along the way. The tour is available most days of the year and the price per person is $44 less if you’re booking for a group of six or more people. From $234 per person.

Arizona Craft Beer Special Tour

If you can’t choose which city to visit, or you simply want to explore the best of Sedona and Flagstaff on the same tour, then this is the brewery tour to end all brewery tours. Over eight hours, you can pack in up to eight different microbreweries in Flagstaff and Sedona. Customize the itinerary to include a side-trip to one or more of the amazing natural wonders in the area, such as Slide Rock State Park, and then get straight back to sampling beers. You’ll get one flight or pint of beer at each location on all these tours. From $510 per person.

Until we write our full guide to Flagstaff, here is a list of the best breweries in the Flagstaff area, according to Untappd, along with information about hours of operation and food options. This list will be updated frequently, but if you notice anything inaccurate on this list, or if you see that we accidentally left off a brewery that falls within the Untappd score range provided, please kindly let us know and we’ll fix it as soon as we can! We strive to provide the most accurate and up-to-date source of brewery information possible. (For why we chose to sort by Untappd rating, please check out our FAQ .) And, as always, before going to a brewery, check their website or social media to see if they have food trucks on certain days, food delivery options, or irregular hours that day.

Also, be sure to sign up for our newsletter for weekly updates on new brewery hop guides, new research lists for cities across the country, new events on our event calendar, and more! Those in Arizona should also check out our research guides to Phoenix and Tucson — and tell your friends! Cheers!

NOTE: As the world continues to re-open after this spring’s COVID-19 pandemic quarantine, many who have re-opened their taprooms are now operating on a different schedule than they had in place pre-quarantine. We will be updating our site as quickly as we can, but it’s very possible that the information on our brewery lists regarding dates, times, and food availability is no longer accurate. Before heading to any brewery, please check the brewery’s social media to determine their hours of operation, and be sure to read our guide for beer travel as the pandemic continues . Thanks!

brewery tours in flagstaff az

Welcome to The Beer Travel Guide! People often ask us where to drink craft beer when they visit various cities, so we decided to make a site that could hopefully help everyone looking for local craft when they travel.

You’ll find our detailed brewery hop recommendations for various American cities here. You’ll also find lists of breweries for a number of cities, lists which include valuable research like whether they serve food and what their hours of operation are. That way, you can make your own hop! If you don’t see the city you want to explore on there, contact us and let us know!

We also have pieces about beer festivals we’ve attended, wrapping up the experience and shouting out our favorite beers that were served. You can read our coverage of festivals we’ve covered in the past two years, including the Firestone Walker Invitational , Great American Beer Fest , Carnival of Caffeination , Sour Friends Fest , Extreme Beer Fest , and many more!

We’ve recently launched a TikTok account, posting daily funny and/or informative videos about craft beer. Please give us a follow there.

We have a list of every beer we’ve tried this year– we’ve already crossed 650 beers for the year, so see what we’ve had and what we recommend!

We’ll also post occasional blog entries, news stories, and more! Please check out our FAQ , and if you think our site is missing something or contains inaccurate information, please don’t hesitate to contact us. Closures and hour changes are happening rapidly, so before assuming our information is fully accurate, always be sure to double check on the breweries’ social media accounts.

Finally, please sign up for the newsletter below– we haven’t been updating as much during the pandemic for obvious reasons, but when regular updates begin again (and they will soon), signing up for the newsletter is the best way to make sure you don’t miss out.

Thanks so much for visiting– we hope you come back soon, and we hope beer travels return to normal as soon as the world will allow. Cheers!

Sedona & Verde Valley Tour

Multiple Locations 5 hours

We are pleased to offer this inclusive tour of 5 Hours – Wine, Chocolate, Beer, & Lunch in Sedona, Arizona. This tour includes lunch & a box of artensal chocolate, along with 4 tasting flights — wine or beer — locally crafted in the beautiful and majestic Sedona & Verde Valley area.

Did you know that there are almost 30 vineyard and tasting room locations with 25 miles of Sedona? Now don’t get your hopes up, we can’t go to all of them, but what we can and will do is take you to the places that have the most suitable wines based on your palate. We may head to Cornville to visit DA Ranch, Oak Creek Vineyard, or Javelina Leap Vineyard.

Maybe we’ll take you to Old Town Cottonwood where you can enjoy the wines of Arizona Stronghold, Merkin Vineyard and Wine Tasting Osteria, Burning Tree Cellars, Tantrum Winery, Winery 101, Pillsbury Wine Company, or Carson Creek Vineyard. Each location offering a diverse selection of wines as well as food options. If you enjoy pasta, we recommend the handmade pasta at Merkin, it’s delicious. Pair that with their Tarzan Red, and your day is getting absolutely better. Now, I know some of you are thinking, how are we to ever decide where we are to go. No need to worry about that. Your knowledgeable guide will take you to the places with the most appropriate wines for your palate and interests.

And we don’t wish to forget about some of the wines coming out of Clarkdale. Here you have Chateau Tumbleweed. You gotta check out their wine labels, each one is a creative drawing of a tumbleweed. And the wines are delicious. Then there’s the Southwest Wine Center and Bodega Pierce Winery, both making some unique wines only to be found here in Arizona.

Now, for those of who enjoy good brew, we do have the option to go to Oak Creek Brewery or THAT Brewery, both of which is brewing some quiet delicious beers. As the tour winds down, you will have had your chance to enjoy local wine, beer, chocolate, and food. Not a bad way to spend an afternoon in Sedona.

For those wishing to really learn more about Arizona wines, this is the perfect tour for you. Enjoy wines from grapes grown all across the state. Discover unique blends that are only found here. Relish in the wonderful afternoon spent learning about new wines and enjoying the magic of Sedona’s red rock formations. Duration: 5 Hours Adult (Ages 21+)
