Our Analysis and Test Results

Britax b-agile vs. b-lively.

britax travel system b agile

Britax is founded on the belief that parents and children should make the most of every moment and live life without limits. They strive to create products with smart designs with safety in mind and have been making children's products for over 70 years. Britax launched in America in 1996 after finding success in Europe as the best-selling car seat brand. Britax takes a special interest in side-impact protection, car seat installation, and strollers. Britax works with car manufacturers, governments, and child passenger safety experts using their testing facilities to create new products for families.

Performance Comparison

The Britax B-Agile 3 earned a Top Pick award for its overall high score and ample features that still manage to stay lightweight.

The B-Agile 3's overall score relative to competing products can be seen in the chart above. In the following sections, we will describe its performance and standout features point by point for the metrics we tested.

Weight and Folded Size

For a lightweight stroller the B-Agile is disappointing for its measured weight and folded size.

It is almost as heavy as the Baby Jogger City Mini , but it is significantly smaller by over 1700 cubic inches.

britax b-agile 3 umbrella stroller review - the b-agile 3 has several features for convenience and comfort...

Ease of Use

The B-Agile earned an 8 of 10 for ease of use. This score ties with the similar Baby Jogger City Mini . The B-Agile has features that include large storage and canopy, as well as an easy fold.

Fold and Unfold

The B-Agile has an easy fold, that was designed well. Its convenience comes from being one-handed and one pull. It has an additional safety button to press first, and it doesn't self-stand, but it does have an automatic lock.

The B-Agile has single action brakes which are simple to set and to release. The pedal is large and easy to step on and lift up, making it sandal foot friendly.

The B-Agile has the largest storage bin in the group, with easy...

The undercarriage bin on the B-Agile supports up to 10 lbs, and it held our Extra-large Diaper Bag inside (above left). It offers easy access from the back and sides, even with the seat back reclined. It also features two small pockets on the back of the canopy for quick access items like a mobile phone or keys. The previous version had one large zippered pocket, which we preferred (above right).

The sunshade on the B-Agile is large, almost as large as the Baby Jogger City Mini . It has a nice mesh peek-a-boo window with hook and loop closure on the cover. The canopy works well, covers down past the knee, and looks sharp.

The B-Agile has a 5-point harness is average. It has a 2 piece buckle that is stiff to connect and straps that are average to adjust with a buckle that slides up and down, but the shoulder straps have padding that can get in the way of adjustment. Rethreading the harness will require you to push the plastic end piece through the slot and reinsert it into a new height.

The B-Agile has an almost flat recline that is easy to adjust. This seat has nice padding, including on the leg rest, but there is no footrest on this stroller and the leg rest is not adjustable. There is a seam behind the knee bend that could get annoying, but overall the seat is cozy and nice for napping.

Car Seat Compatibility

At this time the B-Agile is only compatible with Britax car seats and the Maxi Cosi, Cybex, and Nuna brands with the Britax Infant Car Seat Adapters for Cybex, Nuna, Maxi Cosi available for purchase . In the past, this stroller was also compatible with the award-winning Chicco Keyfit 30 and the Peg Perego Primo Viaggio 4-35 and some Graco models. However, at this time Britax is working on updating the adapters for these car seats so they are compatible with newer versions of the seats. They do not plan to relaunch the adapters until sometime in 2018. This means that you cannot use the B-Agile as a travel system with these brands until sometime in 2018.

Ease of Setup

The B-Agile took 5:42 minutes to set up from unpacking to ready to use. This stroller requires no tools and the manual is average. It is a little harder to set up than others.

Maneuverability

The B-Agile earned a 7 of 10 for maneuverability. This stroller is easy to push and turns with plenty of room to makes tighter turns. Going off-road is only slightly worse, and while it rolls easily through grass, it can be tricky to turn and gravel caused more problems with the dual front wheels struggling to choose a direction to roll in.

It comes with all-wheel suspension and a foam covered handlebar. The sling style seat is adequately padded and we think both passengers and pushers will be comfortable using the B-Agile.

I love how far back the stroller seat reclines. It goes almost flat, so you can put your kid in it pretty early, which gives them better airflow on walks! It handles well and folds easily, too. Jul 16, 2021

The car seat, although heavy, it is due to the steel frame and I found it was worth it. The stroller is great, super easy to fold and unfold, and so versatile. I keep it in my trunk all of the time! May 20, 2020

The MoSCoW method for prioritization: A guide for agile teams

britax travel system b agile

In the messy world of technology, there is an immeasurable demand for the resources from product and development teams. This is where prioritization comes into play.

The MoSCoW Method For Prioritization: A Guide For Agile Teams

Prioritization is one of the core responsibilities of the product manager. With the proper prioritization framework and/or criteria, the product manager can save their team resources while moving closer to the business goals.

In this article, we will dive deep into one of the most widely used prioritization techniques, the MoSCoW method.

What is the MoSCoW method?

The MoSCoW method (also known as MoSCoW analysis) is one of many qualitative prioritization techniques used to prioritize features, user stories, and requirements.

The MoSCoW method groups the features into four groups:

  • Should-have
  • Could-have (or nice-to-have)

1. Must-have

Features or stories are critical for the product’s success. These features represent the non-negotiables which, if not implemented successfully, might put the product at risk of failing.

For example, let’s say you are the PM of a university’s e-learning system. A must-have feature might be the assignment submission feature because it serves a primary and essential need for both ideal customer profiles.

2. Should-have

This classification represents the features that are important, but not as crucial as the must-haves. These features, if not implemented, can cause a severe risk to the product’s success, but their risk is lower than the must-haves.

Typically, product teams use this classification for minor bug fixes and/or performance improvement initiatives.

Returning to our example, a should-have feature for our e-learning system might be an integrated plagiarism tool for teachers to use. This can be a should-have because it would not stop the teachers from doing their work, but not implementing it might lead them to churn and move to other platforms that save them time.

3. Could-have (or nice-to-have)

This classification represents desirable features that are not important to the core function of the product. Not implementing this feature will not cause any risk or failure.

Over 200k developers and product managers use LogRocket to create better digital experiences

britax travel system b agile

Could-have features might help your product or do nothing at all. Features that are tagged with the could-have classification end up deprioritized and treated as a sprint filler.

For our e-learning, one feature could be the ability for the teachers to message other students through the platform. This is nice-to-have because this problem is typically dealt with through email and other platforms.

4. Won’t-have

This classification represents features that are not aligned with the vision and the strategy of the product. These are the features requested by other departments or stakeholders, but are entirely irrelevant.

If we were to reflect this in our e-learning example, this might be a feature that enables teachers to develop a curriculum collaboratively on the platform. This feature is a won’t-have because it doesn’t align with the vision of the product because the product is intended to mainly serve the students.

MoSCoW prioritization template

The MoSCoW prioritization method can be used to prioritize both the product backlog and the sprint backlog . This tells engineers what they need to deliver first and gives them an idea of what task could potentially spill over into the next sprint.

Below is a simple template that can get you up and running with the MoSCoW prioritization technique:

MoSCoW Prioritization Technique

History of the MoSCoW method

The MoSCoW method was introduced first in 1994 by Dai Clegg , a British business consultant and software engineer.

Clegg was working on a software project with the British government and was looking for a method to prioritize the system requirements based on their urgency and criticality. He came up with the MoSCoW method to rank and prioritize the features and ensure the right investments were put into the top features.

How to use the MoSCoW prioritization method (5 steps)

Using the MoSCoW in the real world is more than tagging features with four different tags. It requires additional steps to ensure the proper prioritization is put into place and that features align with your stakeholders.

To apply the MoSCoW prioritization method in product management, take the following steps:

1. Groom your features

It is always a best practice to start by listing your features in your product backlog. Add some details to them like the basic idea of the feature, some simple user flows, and wireframes, and meet with your engineers/technical navigators, or system analysts to check on the technical feasibility and the edge cases.

2. Prioritize initially

After you have all of your features groomed, start prioritizing them. Classify them into must-have, should-have, could-have, and won’t-have. Prioritize based on the available resources and insights gathered from any user research and product analytics.

3. Align with your stakeholders

Present your initial priority to your stakeholders. Gather their input and try to persuade them of your priority based on the insights and the data you have.

Don’t leave the meeting without alignment on the priority of each feature. The outcome of the meeting should be a prioritized list agreed on by each and every stakeholder.

4. Adjust your roadmap and announce

After finalizing the backlog, make sure to give it a final review and announce it publicly using your internal roadmap and any communication channel that includes all the stakeholders.

5. Communicate continuously

We are in the agile era . That means we should embrace change and understand that changes happen all the time.

A feature that is a could-have in this quarter might be a must-have in the next one. So make sure to communicate changes in the business and feature priorities continuously with your stakeholders.

Ensure all the related documents, like the roadmap and the backlog , are updated accordingly and on a timely basis to avoid any miscommunication and to make sure that everyone is aligned on the timeline and the priorities.

Final thoughts

The MoSCoW method is one of the most powerful and widely used prioritization techniques worldwide. It helps classify features and initiatives into four groups.

For the MoSCoW method to be applied effectively and deliver the intended value, it should include a lot of stakeholder alignment and involvement. The product manager should dedicate more time to the must-have features to come up with a killer solution that helps solve the major problem for the users.

What is the moscow prioritization method .

February 13, 2024

As far as mnemonics go, MoSCoW prioritization is one of the most effective acronyms in agile scrum software development. The name briefly summarizes a critical and oft-repeated practice of prioritizing items during product planning.

So, what is it? Why do you need it? How to use it? Let’s find out.

What is MoSCoW Prioritization?

Origins and history of moscow prioritization, applicability, communication, drawbacks of the moscow method, #1 must-have, #2 should-have, #3 could-have, #4 won’t-have (this time), when to use the moscow prioritization method, 1. create your product backlog, 2. add details to the product backlog, 3. set definitions for priority categories, 4. collaboratively decide the priorities, 5. set priorities, 6. validate feasibility.

Avatar of person using AI

MoSCoW prioritization is a powerful technique used in agile project management for setting priorities for tasks and initiatives. MoSCoW is an acronym that stands for

  • Should-have

Each of these is a category of prioritization, which guides what the team will develop in upcoming sprints. MoSCoW prioritization can be applied to anything within the agile framework, including requirements, test use cases, user stories, bugs/defects, acceptance criteria, or tasks.

Even beyond agile product development, the MoSCoW model can help prioritize work. Across industries, the MoSCoW method is included in operations management software to help project teams make better decisions.

When there are various other prioritization methods, including the most straightforward high-medium-low scale, why do we need another one? Let’s see how it originated and evolved.

The MoSCoW prioritization technique was developed by Dai Clegg of Oracle in 1994 to help his team sort project tasks into critical and non-critical ones in rapid application development (RAD) processes. He used it specifically in time-boxed projects to prioritize the project’s requirements.

Over the years, this method has become a staple in agile project management . It has been adopted and appreciated for its simplicity and direction on what a team needs to prioritize while running the entire project.

Benefits of the MoSCoW Prioritization Method

Despite being two decades old, the MoSCoW prioritization technique continues to be popular among teams using the Dynamic Systems Development Method (DSDM). Here’s why.

The MoSCoW technique is ridiculously simple to understand. It helps clarify the options available in front of them to eliminate distractions. (It is not as simple to use, as there can be differences of opinion about what’s must-have and what’s should-have, for instance. We’ll get to that a bit later.)

The categories provide clarity and reduce confusion. If it’s not a must-have, it’s not going in the next sprint. This ensures the team is stress-free and can focus on doing their best work.

The MoSCoW method helps managers and teams see what is important and needs immediate attention. By classifying a high-priority task as a “must-have,” managers can ensure they have everything they need to finish it. They can also discuss competing priorities as a team.

The MoSCoW method is nearly universally applicable. It can be used to prioritize anything. For example, a team lead can mark ten developers as must-have and three more as could-have to let their superiors know how many people they need.

Assigning priority levels in this method is a great starting point for conversations in project planning and sprint planning sessions. Defining something as must-have or won’t-have encourages people to agree or disagree specifically.

MoSCoW prioritization is very effective in preventing scope creep. The clear priorities ensure that any newly added feature goes through the prioritization process, helping project managers manage expectations.

Despite its benefits, the MoSCoW Prioritization method is not without its challenges. We’ll discuss them below.

Ambiguity : Must-haves and won’t-haves are easy to agree on. But should-haves and could-haves might be more ambiguous. While the framework lays out clear definitions, it can turn complex in practice. Moreover, teams often disagree on the definition of won’t-haves—are they left out of this sprint or the entire product?

Oversimplification : This method risks oversimplifying complex agile projects, where tasks cannot be easily categorized into discrete buckets and might not adequately address the interdependencies between tasks.

Subjectivity: Like all methods, MoSCoW prioritization is also subjective. The team has to come together to make task prioritization decisions. Its drawback is that it doesn’t do much to bring objectivity into the process.

Demanding : To prioritize a task in the MoSCoW framework, each must have detailed descriptions and context. For example, a ‘tagging’ feature in an agile project management tool might be a must-have for specific use cases while appearing non-critical. Product owners need to invest time and energy into definitions to categorize accurately.

Single-level : Within the four categories, there is no way to prioritize items further. This assumes equal priority for all must-have items, making it ineffective in planning.

Categories of the MoSCoW Prioritization Method

The MoSCoW prioritization method has four categories: must-have, should-have, could-have, and won’t-have.

“Must-have” tasks are critical items for the duration of the current sprint. ‘Must’ in the must-have category is sometimes defined as ‘minimum usable subset.’ This ensures that the iteration enables a minimum level of usability of the features.

A must-have feature typically is critical for the customers, a compliance requirement, or a safety/accessibility prerogative. Without these features, the product itself would be pointless to take to market.

Tasks considered to be “should-have” are second in priority. These tasks are important but not critical for the current timebox and can be deferred if necessary.

A could-have feature is typically a minor bug fix or performance improvement, without which the product functions, even if not optimally. Teams often use some kind of temporary workaround to manage these items.

The third category is “could-have” tasks, i.e., desirable but unnecessary. The critical difference between should-have and could-have is that the former is important and can considerably impact product success (customer satisfaction, revenue, profitability, etc.), while the latter can be comfortably left out without much damage.

Teams prioritize could-have tasks only if they can be delivered without affecting the development team’s cost or effort. As the situation evolves, could-have items are often re-prioritized and developed.

“Won’t-have” tasks are recognized as not necessary for the project’s current scope. These tasks or features are of the lowest priority and omitted at the first sign of resistance.

Won’t-have features have a very low impact on the project’s success. They neither harm outcomes nor create additional value.

As helpful as this technique might be, it’s not universally effective. Here are the situations in which it works best.

MoSCoW prioritization is a great decision-making tool for several personal and professional scenarios. When decluttering your home, instead of asking if an item “sparks joy,” you can ask if it is a “must-have.”

For an agile project manager, it can be a lot more valuable than that. Here’s how.

Time : The primary determinant of MoSCoW analysis is time. The categorization is for the current sprint or timebox. It is highly effective for time-sensitive projects with tight deadlines.

Resources : What if you have a limited team of developers? Use MoSCoW as it helps maximize deliverables within available resources.

Product initiation : Early in the project, you must decide what to focus on first and what makes your minimum viable product (MVP). MoSCoW prioritization can be incredibly useful in guiding these conversations.

However, it’s important to note that MoSCoW may not be suitable for all projects, especially those with complex interdependencies or where all tasks are equally critical.

How to Implement the MoSCoW Prioritization Method

Successful MoSCoW prioritization needs clear and effective processes. Here is an outline of a process and pointers on how to prioritize your work with any free project management software like ClickUp to get it right.

Before you prioritize tasks for the future release, it is essential to create a list of possibilities. Typically, this is outlined in the product backlog. Based on research and input from cross-functional teams, build a select few from the backlog.

On ClickUp, you can set these as tasks, milestones, features, defects, and more to facilitate better prioritization.

ClickUp Custom Task Types

Like we mentioned earlier, one of the non-negotiable factors of MoSCoW prioritization is adequate information about the task. Without the what, why, how, when, and who, it would be impossible to prioritize right. So, add all the information you can gather. This could be:

  • Description of the user story
  • Business impact
  • Engineering impact, such as time/effort estimate
  • Measures of success
  • Dependencies for other tasks

ClickUp tasks allow you to add sub-tasks, checklists, time estimates, users, tags, custom fields, and more. Use ClickUp’s hierarchy guide to organize information effectively.

What does must-have mean? What parameters should a task have to be considered a must-have? Does the entire team have to agree to categorize something as won’t-have?

The most commonly used methodologies are weighted scoring, the Kano model, or buy-a-feature. If that feels like another layer of frameworks/models, here are a few project prioritization templates you can use.

Choose yours carefully. It is essential to set these definitions before getting into prioritizing tasks. This would help process standardization for proper priority management . Also, place an escalation matrix so that someone can make a decision in case of disagreements.

To ensure everyone understands and follows your priority definitions, document and publish them on ClickUp Docs . Collaborate on them to ensure the team agrees on them. You can also use ClickUp AI within Docs to summarize longer definitions for easy reference.

With all the foundational work done, it’s time to prioritize. Bring the team together to evaluate every option and set priorities.

Choose from any of ClickUp’s views to see the information that suits your needs. For instance, most agile teams typically use the Kanban board view to have all the uncategorized items in one column and then drag-and-drop them into their relevant priorities. You can also filter items on the Kanban board based on what you’d like to see.

ClickUp Kanban Board View

Discuss business requirements openly. Here are a few things to consider.

  • Set all tasks as won’t-have and then debate about why you must have it
  • For must-have requirements, ask, “Without this item, is the increment as good as canceled?”
  • If there is a workaround, even if it’s manual, don’t categorize it as a must-have
  • If a must-have has a dependency on anything other than another must-have, re-evaluate it

Remember that something you categorized as a could-have in the previous increment might become a must-have for the next. For example, while building the MVP, you might have categorized some items as could-have because they are not crucial for the current sprint. Once the MVP is launched, these features might become a must-have now.

Once you’ve agreed, set them up on your prioritization tools . ClickUp priorities give you four options: Urgent, high, normal, and low. You can make these MoSCoW priorities.

Alternatively, you can use the MoSCoW method with custom statuses . While setting task priorities on ClickUp, add a line or two in the comments about why you made the decision. This will help future prioritization sessions.

Custom statuses on ClickUp

Priorities are not just about what’s important, they’re equally about what can be built within that timebox. You don’t want to overcommit and underdeliver just because you think everything is a must-have.

Before committing to a plan, look for each team member’s current workload and capacity. Use the time estimates for each task to simulate capacity. Use the Workload view to ensure no one is over-stacked.

ClickUp Workload View for capacity planning

Prioritize The Right Things with ClickUp

Product teams must remain laser-focused on what’s good for the business and the customer. They need to eliminate distractions. So, project prioritization is a superpower. Good prioritization is as much a choice about what to do as it is about what not to.

ClickUp’s project management tool is designed to enable exactly this. The hierarchy, task management, priorities, and custom statuses help teams effectively understand and prioritize their work.

The Workload views help ensure the prioritized tasks are deliverable, and the ClickUp Dashboards help keep the priorities on track.  Try ClickUp for free today and build the right thing.

Moscow Prioritization Definition

Moscow Prioritization, also known as the MoSCoW method or MoSCoW analysis, is an acronym that stands for Must have, Should have, Could have, and Won’t have. It is commonly used in agile project management methodologies, such as Scrum and DSDM (Dynamic Systems Development Method). It provides a structured framework for prioritizing requirements and enables teams to adapt and respond to changing project needs.

What is Moscow Prioritization?

Moscow Prioritization is a method used to categorize and prioritize requirements or features in a project. It helps project teams and stakeholders determine what is essential for the project’s success and what can be deferred or excluded. By using the Moscow Prioritization method, project managers can make informed decisions about resource allocation and ensure that the most critical elements are addressed first.

Moscow Prioritization Examples

To better understand MoSCoW Prioritization, let’s explore some examples:

  • Must have : These are the requirements or features that are crucial for the project’s success. They are non-negotiable and must be delivered within the specified timeframe. For example, in a software development project, the ability to create user accounts and login functionality would be considered must-have features.
  • Should have : These requirements or features are important but not critical. They can be deferred if necessary but should be included in the project if resources allow. For instance, in a website development project, implementing a search functionality would be considered a should-have feature.
  • Could have : These requirements or features are desirable but not necessary for the project’s core functionality. They can be considered for inclusion if time and resources permit. For example, in a mobile app development project, integrating social media sharing capabilities could be considered a could-have feature.
  • Won’t have : These are the requirements or features that are explicitly excluded from the project scope. They are not considered essential and will not be implemented. It is important to clearly communicate and manage stakeholders’ expectations regarding the exclusion of these features.

By using the Moscow Prioritization method, project teams can effectively prioritize their work and focus on delivering the most critical elements first. This approach helps prevent scope creep and ensures that the project’s key objectives are met within the given constraints.

How to Implement MoSCoW Prioritization: Best Practices

Using MoSCoW Prioritization effectively requires careful consideration and collaboration among the Agile team and stakeholders. Here are some best practices to ensure the successful implementation of the MoSCoW Rules:

  • Involve key stakeholders : Ensure all relevant stakeholders are actively involved in the prioritization process. This includes representatives from the business, development team, product owners, and end-users. Their input and understanding of the project goals and requirements are crucial for making informed decisions.
  • Clearly define priorities : Make sure that the team has a shared understanding of what each priority category (Must have, Should have, Could have, Won’t have) means. Establish clear criteria for each category to avoid ambiguity and misinterpretation.
  • Focus on value : Prioritize features based on their potential value to the end-users and the project’s overall objectives. Consider the impact of each requirement on the product’s functionality, user experience, and business outcomes.
  • Revisit priorities regularly : Priorities can change throughout the project lifecycle due to evolving business needs or market conditions. Regularly review and update the prioritization to stay aligned with the project’s current goals.
  • Collaborative decision-making : Use collaborative techniques such as group discussions, workshops, and brainstorming sessions to arrive at a consensus on priorities. Encourage open communication and respect different perspectives.
  • Limit the number of “Must have” items : Be cautious not to overload the “Must have” category with too many requirements. Limiting the number of Must Have items ensures that they genuinely represent critical features that must be delivered.
  • Focus on Minimum Viable Product (MVP) : Use MoSCoW prioritization to identify the Minimum Viable Product— the set of features that deliver the most value with the least effort. This helps in delivering a usable product early and gathering feedback from users.
  • Balance stakeholders’ needs : Address conflicts in priorities by having discussions to understand the reasoning behind stakeholders’ preferences. Look for opportunities to find common ground and compromise.
  • Be flexible : Agile methodologies embrace change, and priorities may shift as the project progresses. Be prepared to adjust priorities based on new information, feedback, or changing market conditions.
  • Communicate priorities clearly : Ensure that all team members understand the prioritization and its implications. Transparent communication helps maintain a shared vision and keeps everyone focused on the project’s most important goals.

Moscow Prioritization, also known as the MoSCoW method, is a valuable technique in project management for prioritizing requirements or features. By categorizing them into Must have, Should have, Could have, and Won’t have, project teams can effectively allocate resources and ensure the successful delivery of critical elements.

How To Prioritise Requirements With The MoSCoW Technique

Home Blog Agile How To Prioritise Requirements With The MoSCoW Technique

Play icon

On most projects, we talk about requirements and features that are either in scope or out of scope. But to manage those requirements effectively we also have to prioritize them. And this is where the MoSCoW  technique comes in. In addition, you can read more about the acceptance criteria here.

Let me explain what M, S, C, and W stand for.

  • M is a must-have requirement. Something that’s essential to the project and that’s not negotiable.
  • S  is a should-have requirement. Something we need in the project if at all possible.
  • C  stands for could-have. Something that’s nice to have in case we have extra time and budget.

Why Use MoSCoW Technique for Requirement Prioritization?

Using the MoSCoW technique gives us a more granular view of what is in or out of the scope of the project, and it helps us deliver the most important requirements to the customer first. In other words, it helps you to manage your client’s expectations. And as you will come to see, the MoSCoW technique can also be used to delegate work and to be explicit about what needs to get done and what doesn't need to get done.

Why MOSCOW technique

How to Use MoSCoW Technique for Requirement Prioritization?

Let us look at an example of how to use the technique in practice. I would like you to imagine that your job is to project manage an upcoming conference. This is a yearly conference where delegates will come to network and hear industry experts talk about sustainability in project management.

As you meet with the organization behind the event, i.e. your client, you ask them what their must-have requirements are for the conference. You are curious to know everything you must deliver to them for them to be satisfied. Your client responds that the event must be held at an indoor venue within five kilometers of the city center and that it must be within the allocated budget. It must be able to host 150 people and it must have facilities to serve lunch.

You then ask your client what there should be at the event if at all possible. They answer that you should arrange for three speakers in the morning and three speakers in the afternoon. All of them should be recognized within the industry, if at all possible. In addition, you should make time for the delegates to network with each other during lunch, and lunch should, ideally, be a sit-down affair with hot food. Finally, each delegate should receive a goodie bag upon arrival.

You furthermore enquire with your client what there could be at the event. i.e. what are some nice-to-have requirements, which you could incorporate? You’re not promising to deliver those requirements but in case you have extra time and budget you can look into it. It turns out that your client would like to have a famous sports or businessperson open the conference. But it’s not essential and only possible if the budget allows it. They also think that it would be nice with a panel discussion on sustainability at some point after lunch, but it isn’t essential.

You finally ask them what there will not be at this event, i.e. which requirements are firmly out of scope. Your client answers that there will not be multiple tracks of speakers and that there will not be any alcohol served at any point during the day. They also specify that this year there won’t be a second day of in-depth workshops taking place. Using the MoSCoW technique in this way to categorize all the project’s requirements is a very user-friendly method, which your client will be able to easily understand. Initially, your client may say that everything is a must-have requirement, but when you explain that must-have requirements come with a price tag they will understand that they can’t have everything unless they increase the budget and give you more time to deliver it. When you plan your project and put together the project plan, only include the must-have and should-have items. This is what you’re promising to deliver. You’re not promising to deliver the could-have items. They can go on a separate wish list. Also, take care to properly document the will-not-have requirements. You may think that you can forget about them because they are out of scope. But, it’s necessary to document them as you may have to refer back to them later.

Example of using the MoSCoW technique to describe features of a requirement

What I really like about the MoSCoW technique is that you can also use it at a more detailed level to describe the features of a requirement. Let’s say for example that you have delegated the goodie bag task to one of your team members. That’s the little bag each participant will receive when they arrive at the venue and which normally contains a few freebies. It’s the team member’s job to gather the detailed requirements for the goodie bag and to physically produce it. As you’re delegating the task, the team members would like to know what your expectations are and what they must deliver to you at the end. You should explain to them all the information required clearly, such as:

  • The requirements (M): There must be 150 goodie bags Each bag must contain a copy of the event program and Bag as well as the event program must be made out of recyclable materials
  • The deliverables (S): There should be two free branded items inside, such as a pen and paper, if at all possible.
  • Furthermore, explain that (C): The bag could contain something sweet, like mints, but only if a suitable sponsor is found. The bag could also contain a small bottle of water as a nice to have.
  • Finally specify that (W): The bags will not contain any alcohol and the combined weight will not be more than one kg.

Whose Responsibility is to Prioritize?

Business Analysts are mainly responsible to take up the most complex requirements and break down them into simple tasks that can be implemented by anyone. But, BA alone can’t do the prioritization alone. He/she needs to bring several stakeholders into the process and get their approval on the requirements priority. It is essential for BA to understand the dependencies between the requirements before prioritizing them.

Benefits of using the MoSCoW technique for Business Analysts

The BA can make use of any prioritization techniques to prioritize the requirements thoroughly. But, MoSCoW technique is the most effective one to use among all the other prioritization techniques available. Some of the benefits of using MoSCoW technique for Business Analysts is shown in the figure below.

MOSCOW Benefits

Drawbacks of MoSCoW Prioritization

MoSCoW is a priority for many product and development teams, although the strategy may have some drawbacks. Here are a few instances:

Sometimes tasks are assigned to the wrong categories due to inconsistent scoring. MoSCoW is frequently criticized for its lack of an impartial approach to comparing initiatives to one another. Your team will need to apply this process to your analysis. The MoSCoW technique only functions if your team adopts a standard scoring methodology across all efforts.

Items could end up in the wrong categories if all pertinent stakeholders are not included. To decide which of your team's activities are absolutely necessary for your product and which are merely desirable, you'll need as much information as possible.  For instance, you might require feedback from a member of your sales staff regarding the significance (or lack thereof) of a proposed new feature to potential customers. Without feedback from all pertinent stakeholders, your team may choose poorly where to place each endeavor, which is a drawback of the MoSCoW technique.

Team bias can reduce MoSCoW's efficacy by supporting (or opposing) efforts. Your team members might be influenced by their opinions on particular initiatives because MoSCoW lacks a framework for objectively evaluating initiatives. Using MoSCoW prioritizing carries the danger that a team may erroneously think that MoSCoW is an impartial way to evaluate the things on their list.

They discuss one initiative, determine it should have been done instead, and then move on to the next. On the other hand, your team will need a consistent and impartial system for rating every proposal. The only way to lessen your team's prejudices in favor of or against things is to do this.

As we can see that we can prioritize requirements with MoSCoW technique at a high level but also at a low level to specify the detailed requirements, or features, of a product. When you use it at a low level it also helps you to delegate tasks better to team members and to set expectations. Are you ready to give it a go?
