Amazing tour

To be honest, I’m not a huge Broadway or New York fan, but the wife is, and this vacation was for her. However, I had a great time. Greg Uliasz was extremely informed, friendly, and enthusiastic. His extensive knowledge encompassed, not just Broadway and off-Broadway theatre, but he demonstrated a broad range of general knowledge of New York City, celebrities, and New Yorkers in general.

— Matthias P.

Do yourself the favour

It was really lovely to go back in time and hear the stories of Broadway and the actors journeys. You can’t always get the full story on your own.

Inside Broadway Tour! Fantastic tour! Fantastic guide!

We had Claire as our guide and she was amazing! Super personable, very knowledgeable and entertaining. I experienced the tour with my daughter for her 16th birthday and she absolutely loved it! Thanks Claire! You were the best!

— Bernie K.

Great Tour!

Frank was a great tour guide and did an amazing job of explaining everything about Broadway. From the area itself, to the shows (past and present) and even the history of the theaters. Given is theater background he was able to be engaged and answer all of our questions.

Planning a Broadway-themed trip to NYC can be a dream come true for theater enthusiasts, but it's essential to plan carefully to make the most of your experience.

Here are some tips to help you plan the best Broadway-themed trip to NYC:

1. Research the Shows: Before you go, research the current and upcoming shows on Broadway. Look for reviews, recommendations, and popular productions to create a list of must-see shows. Planning ahead will help you secure tickets to the most in-demand performances.

2. Book Tickets Early: Broadway shows are incredibly popular, and tickets can sell out fast. Once you've decided on the shows you want to see, book your tickets as early as possible to secure the best seats and avoid disappointment.

3. Consider a Broadway Tour: If you want to gain a deeper understanding of Broadway's history, architecture, and insider information, consider booking a guided Broadway tour. These tours can offer unique behind-the-scenes access and knowledge that you wouldn't get on your own.

4. Plan Your Dining: NYC is home to an abundance of fantastic dining options, and it's important to plan your meals around your theater schedule. There's a lot to see and do in the area beyond just attending shows.

6. Stay in the Theater District: Consider finding accommodation in the Theater District to be close to all the action. Staying nearby will make it easier to navigate between shows and explore the surrounding area without spending too much time on transportation.

?I searched around for a Broadway tour because I basically came to NYC for the theater and I figured it would be a good investment! Amada, the tour guide, is wonderful and so sweet. She has the same enthusiasm as I do about theatre! In saying that, I did find that I knew a lot about what she was teaching us about already. For the average NYC tourist, this would be a perfect tour about the basics of NYC theatre!! Amada takes you on a route that somehow avoids most of the hectic crowds so kudos to her! Do keep in mind that you do not go into any theaters, but you do get to see plenty of them. Go support New York Broadway Tours?and the wonderful Amada!? – Maddie O

?A friend and I took the tour on a Sunday. Amada was on time, really knows what she is talking about, provided a wealth of information that we didn?t know (and we live here!). Interestingly enough, there were only the 2 of us so we really got to ask about everything we wanted to know! There were supposed to be others on the tour and she did wait some minutes and call/text them rather than just take off without them. I think this shows her professionalism and wanting to make sure that people weren?t left behind. She made the tour fun, despite the oppressive heat, and encourages people to have ?jazz hands?, sing along, etc. Not to mention that she has a great voice! I recommend taking the tour- don?t think you?ll be disappointed!? – Sonia

"We had some time before our Broadway show, and we decided to try the New York Broadway Tour - and it was awesome! More fun, personal, and inspiring than a typical tour. About Idina Menzel

Idina Menzel rose to fame for her role as Maureen in the popular Broadway musical “Rent,” and her career took off when she won a Tony Award for her role as Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, in the smash musical “Wicked.” Menzel recently starred as Jodi in the West Coast premiere of Joshua Harmon ’s “Skintight”; the show is a follow up to the off-Broadway performance that opened to rave reviews at Roundabout Theatre Company. Additionally, she joins Adam Sandler , Eric Bogosian , Lakeith Stanfield and Judd Hirsch in the Safdie Brothers’ A24 film “Uncut Gems.” A skillful songwriter, Menzel’s prolific recording career includes multiple cast albums and the solo albums: “Still I Can’t Be Still,” “Here,” “I Stand,” and her latest album, “idina.,” which was released September 2016 by Warner Bros. Records. “idina.“ marks Menzel’s first original studio album since 2008’s “I Stand,” and its first two singles “I See You” and “Queen of Swords” are available everywhere now. The album is produced by Eric Rosse ( Tori Amos , Sara Bareilles ) and Greg Wells (Katy Perry, OneRepublic). “idina.” is Menzel’s first album since her October 2014 release of “Holiday Wishes,” a Christmas album produced by GRAMMY® Award-winner Walter Afanasieff ( Barbra Streisand , Celine Dion , Mariah Carey ). The album was met with rave reviews, debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s Holiday Albums Chart and gave Menzel a top-10 album on the Billboard Top 200 Album Chart. Menzel has received the Breakthrough Artist of the Year Award at Billboard’s annual Women in Music event, and recently completed a worldwide tour that included Asia, the U.K. and North America. Menzel also sang the National Anthem at Super Bowl XLIX. In January 2017, Menzel was seen in Lifetime’s remake of “Beaches,” in which she portrayed CC, the role made famous by Bette Midler . Her other film credits include Disney’s “Enchanted,” opposite Susan Sarandon , Patrick Dempsey and Amy Adams ; Maureen in Chris Columbus ’ film version of “Rent”; and Robert Towne’s “Ask the Dust,” opposite Salma Hayek and Colin Farrell . On television, Menzel appeared in the recurring role of Shelby Corcoran, Rachel’s biological mother, on Fox’s “Glee.” Menzel was previously seen on Broadway in the original production “If/Then,” for which she earned her third Tony nomination. “If/Then” played at the Richard Rodgers Theatre through March 2015, which was followed by a nationwide tour with Menzel and several cast members. Menzel also appeared as Sheila in the Encores! production of “Hair” and starred as Amneris in Broadway’s “Aida.” In London, she premiered the Broadway hit “Wicked” in the West End and received the Theatregoers Choice Award for best actress in a musical. She also starred in Michael John LaChiusa ’s musical “See What I Wanna See,” directed by Ted Sperling at The Public Theater . Other Off-Broadway credits include the pre-Broadway production of “Rent” and “The Vagina Monologues.” Menzel is consistently lauded for her strong yet emotional live performances. Accompanied by world-renowned symphonies, Menzel has played to sold-out audiences and demonstrated why she is one of the great performers of her time. In March 2012, Menzel released a CD and DVD entitled “ Idina Menzel Live: Barefoot at the Symphony,” a live concert with an orchestra led by legendary composer/conductor Marvin Hamlisch , filmed at The Royal Conservatory’s Koerner Hall in Toronto, Canada. The concert also aired nationally on PBS stations. Her highly successful international concert tour has also included sold-out performances at Carnegie Hall and Radio City Music Hall, and a New Year’s Eve 2012 performance at the Walt Disney Concert Hall. Philanthropy is also important to Menzel, who co-founded the A BroaderWay Foundation in 2010. The organization is dedicated to offering girls from underserved communities an outlet for self-expression and creativity through arts-centered programs. The emphasis is on building self-esteem, developing leadership qualities and striving for personal and social achievement. In 2014, Menzel was recognized as one of Variety magazine’s Power of Women honorees for her work with the organization.

Theater | orange deputies arrest ‘potential serial killer’ in slayings of two women, things to do, subscriber only, theater | with ‘mrs. doubtfire’ comes unexpected heart and humor, dearie | review.

In the touring company of "Mrs. Doubtfire," Axel Bernard Rimmele, left, Giselle Gutierrez, Rob McClure and Kennedy Alexandra Pitney perform. (Courtesy Joan Marcus)

Confession time: I have never seen “ Mrs. Doubtfire ,” the hit comedy film in which Robin Williams’ divorced dad character dresses up like an elderly Scottish nanny and tricks his ex-wife (played by Sally Field) into hiring him, just so he can spend more time with his children.

That Cliff’s Notes description of the plot never inspired me to check out the film, which was released in 1993. (I know, where have I been?)

A staged musical version of the movie debuted on Broadway in 2021, and it’s now touring the country. As seen at a stop in Tampa this month, maybe I’ve been missing out all these years. Or maybe a Broadway musical is just a great way to mix so much humor with so much heart.

Unexpectedly, the touring production of “Mrs. Doubtfire” charmed me, from Wayne Kirkpatrick and Karey Kirkpatrick’s tuneful songs to Rob McClure’s nicely layered performance as a father who knows he has messed up but wants to be there for his kids.

Maggie Lakis and Rob McClure play divorced parents in the touring production of "Mrs. Doubtfire." (Courtesy Joan Marcus via the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts)

McClure also starred on Broadway in the role, and I’m sure there will be movie buffs who will find him perhaps a pale imitation of Williams. But, knowing what I know of Williams’ work in general, it seemed to me that McClure smartly pays tribute to Williams while making the role his own.

Or rather, the two roles.

McClure starts out as Daniel Hillard, who loses custody of his children in a not truly nasty but also not exactly cordial divorce with Miranda, who has long felt unheard by her responsibility-challenged spouse.

When Daniel finds out Miranda is hiring a nanny for the three kids he longs to see, he on-the-spot creates the fictitious Mrs. Doubtfire and applies for the position. Thanks to help from his brother and brother’s husband, who are professional costumers and makeup artists, Daniel is transformed into the grandmotherly Mrs. D, gets the job and becomes part of the family.

Daniel (Rob McClure, right, as his alter ego) doesn't approve of handsome Stuart (Leo Roberts) moving in on his ex-wife In "Mrs. Doubtfire," (Courtesy Joan Marcus)

Some of those transformations happen right onstage, and there is a measure of fun in watching McClure jump in and out of the spot-on and cleverly designed padded costume (by Catherine Zuber) and gray-haired wig (by David Brian Brown) in a succession of quick changes.

Critically, McClure is likable both as screwup Daniel and as no-nonsense Mrs. Doubtfire. In fact, just about everyone radiates warmth. As Miranda, Maggie Lakis is understandably a little more frayed around the edges but her chilliness is understandable and Lakis comes up a winner in an emotional and big-voiced “Let Go,” an Act 2 highlight.

Leo Roberts takes on the movie’s Pierce Brosnan role of Miranda’s new, seemingly perfectly hunky boyfriend, and he has the baritone and biceps to fit the bill. Even he is rootable in the smart way Karey Kirkpatrick and John O’Farrell have constructed the musical’s book.

Young Orlando actor comes home in ‘Mrs. Doubtfire’ tour

Not everything works. A running gag about shouting when lying gets old fast. In fact, director Jerry Zaks lets several characters — and not the children, I might add — shout too much. (Loud is not synonymous with funny, after all.)

But then there are unexpected delights in the show’s big numbers, the kind of silliness that makes a musical comedy a musical comedy: A daffy fashion parade of random celebrities, a flamboyant tango number, a posse of chefs emerging from YouTube to tap dance while teaching how to spatchcock a chicken. (That’s not relevant to the plot; I just wanted to get “tap dance” and “spatchcock” in the same sentence; when will that ever happen again?)

Rob McClure as Mrs. Doubtfire gets some help in the kitchen from a team of dancing chefs and a Rachael Ray lookalike. (Courtesy Joan Marcus)

Yes, Internet cooking tutorials are part of the story, which clearly has been updated (and all for the best) since the film’s release. Harry Styles, Taylor Swift and Siri all get name-dropped at one point or another. I’ve written about Orlando’s Axel Bernard Rimmele , who plays one of the three children in the cast; unfortunately, his alternate was onstage at my performance. But all three children I saw were talented and naturally funny, without going for sitcom “too cute” or precociousness.

Their comic but appealingly sincere number “What the Hell” besides being well-performed also wisely lets the youngsters share their point of view with the audience, including children who may be experiencing the same feelings.

It’s actually unfair to call all three children. Responsible eldest daughter Lydia, who “feels older than Dad,” is played by a young woman — who also has a local connection. Plant City native Giselle Gutierrez, a sophomore at the University of Central Florida, beautifully succeeds in making her teen character seem legitimately angry and not stagey angry. She brings a lovely realness of emotion in her singing, as well, and a voice that fits both her character and the songs.

Rob McClure stars in the national tour of "Mrs. Doubtfire," now playing at the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts in Orlando. (Courtesy Joan Marcus)

As with many musicals, the second act lacks the nonstop zing of the first, as the plot has to be dealt with, but even the ending you see coming from a mile away can’t diminish the show’s obvious but not heavy-handed messages: Families come in many varieties, change can result in something better, and always look for love to lead the way.

Tour the Sartorial Splendor of Broadway’s The Great Gatsby with Costume Designer Linda Cho

In his novel The Great Gatsby , amid intoxicating prose about glowing lights, copious drinks and too-eager laughter, F. Scott Fitzgerald demonstrates a discerning eye for clothes and what they can reveal about their wearer.

Enigmatic party host Jay Gatsby—shockingly—wears a pink suit, as no true Oxford man would. The reader is introduced to Daisy and Jordan’s rippling, fluttering dresses before properly meeting the characters themselves. Poor naive Myrtle squeezes into a brown muslin number.

As the costume designer for The Great Gatsby on Broadway, Linda Cho was tasked with bringing the sartorial splendor of the Jazz Age to vivid life on stage. She and her team created designs for more than 350 costumes for the show. “You don't get a lot of opportunities to do a giant period musical with seemingly endless resources and just sort of design the dream,” Cho told Broadway.com Managing Editor Beth Stevens on The Broadway Show .

The character of Daisy alone promises to be a constantly shifting vision. In the role, the actress Eva Noblezada  gets 10 costume changes over the course of the show. “We definitely wanted her to be a fashion show,” said Cho. “Every time she comes on, it should be something different. Everything should just look like a dream—like Gatsby's dream.”

Check out the full interview, including a tour of Cho’s designs, in the video below.

Subscriber only, entertainment | broadway review: ‘heart of rock and roll’ is funny, unpretentious ’80s fun.

Corey Cott, McKenzie Kurtz and the cast of 'The Heart of Rock and Roll' on Broadway.

Back in the 1980s, Huey Lewis and the News were sometimes compared with The Cars and even Elvis Costello. But their string of catchy hit singles also had the distinctive everyman air of flowing out of a bunch of regular dudes who could just as easily have been headlining your local tavern.

That’s presumably why book writer Jonathan A. Abrams (working from a story co-written with Tyler Mitchell) set the new jukebox musical “ The Heart of Rock and Roll ” in Milwaukee and Chicago, even though Lewis was born in NYC and raised in California. His numerous hits like “This is It,” “Stuck With You,” “Giving It All Up for Love,” and “Power of Love” just seem to fit the Midwest gestalt.

Over time, these earworms often have become disassociated with their creators; most everyone knows “The Heart of Rock and Roll,” but Huey Lewis and the News are rarely top of mind.

Ideal fodder, then, for a modestly scaled and warm-hearted jukebox show that might prove to be one of the sleeper hits of the season. That’s thanks to an inestimably witty book with plenty of hard laughs and a suite of winning lead performances under director Gordon Greenberg .

With the help of a killer ensemble decked out in glittery ’80s trashiness, Lorin Latarro’s tour de force choreography starts on an industrial assembly line and then lets young bodies move energetically and unpretentiously through time and space. The show captures much of “Road House” or even “Dirty Dancing,” as well as drawing from the Broadway world of “ Rock of Ages ” and “ School of Rock .”

It’s a sort of gritty, Midwestern “ Mamma Mia ,” with paper-pushers and Lake Michigan basement dwellers taking the place of the beautiful Greeks astride the Ionian Sea.

Corey Cott in 'The Heart of Rock and Roll' on Broadway.

The premise here is that working-class Bobby (Corey Cott) has given up on his dream of being in a successful band and gone to work for a Wisconsin cardboard box company (an industry that keeps on giving in the gag department. But you can’t keep an ambitious guy down. Bobby crashes a sales convention in Chicago’s Drake Hotel, simultaneously trying to prove to company owner Stone (John Dossett) and his daughter — and Bobby’s love interest — Cassandra (McKenzie Kurtz) that he can strike a deal with an IKEA-like mogul, Fjord (Orville Mendoza), for more boxes than Milwaukee has Miller Lites.

Obstacles are in the way: Cassandra has a Princeton “Pez Dispenser” (Billy Harrigan Tighe) wooing her and Bobby has old bandmates (F. Michael Haynie, Raymond J. Lee and John-Michael Lyles) who want him back. Then there’s the head of H.R., Roz (Tamika Lawrence), who has dreams of her own.

None of this is to be taken too seriously, and there is no reinvention nor pretentious grabs for awards and critical acclaim. “The Heart of Rock and Roll,” which does not look like it cost $30 million dollars and is all the better for that, feels happy to play to its target audience of Huey fans who prefer a decent beer to Moet & Chandon any night of the week.

Corey Cott, Raymond J. Lee, John-Michael Lyles and F. Michael Haynie in 'The Heart of Rock and Roll' on Broadway.

Aside from a truly lovely central performance from Cott, all handsome heart and full-on commitment to his loser guy’s optimism, the biggest surprise of this show is how funny it turns out to be. There’s a series of wicked lines that reminded me of both Tina Fey and “The Office,” given how often H.R. and paper factor in the plot.

The show is never crass and does not overpush its genuinely warm welcome from the work-weary. Hip to be square indeed.

Billie Eilish coming to the Prudential Center. Here's how to get tickets

Pop super star Billie Eilish is coming to New Jersey this fall to tour her new album "Hit Me Hard and Soft," which is set to come out in May.

The 22-year-old musician will be performing at the Prudential Center on Oct. 9 . Tickets will be available for presale on Tuesday April 30 for American Express Cardholders and will go on sale to the general public on Friday May 3, both starting at noon.

Billie Eilish tour 2024

Her third studio album is set to come out on May 17. The young artist has already achieved much critical and commercial success. She had a Billboard No. 1 song with "bad guy" and five other top 10 Billboard hits. She also already has nine Grammy wins.

The North American leg of her tour kicks off Sept. 29 in Quebec and runs until Dec. 17. The overseas part of her tour starts in Feb. 25, stopping in countries such as Australia, Germany, France, the United Kingdom and more.

Billie Eilish concert in NYC

Those who may be busy when she is visiting the Garden State can catch her in Manhattan between Oct. 16 through 18, when she plays in Madison Square Garden for three consecutive days.

Comments Eilish recently made about sex in a  Rolling Stone profile  made headlines.

"I basically  talk about sex  any time I possibly can," she told Rolling Stone. "That’s literally my favorite topic. My experience as a woman has been that it’s seen in such a weird way. People are so uncomfortable talking about it, and weirded out when women are comfortable in their sexuality and communicative in it."

She added "self-pleasure is an enormous, enormous part of my life," saying it helps her connect with herself and sharing what she enjoys. She also talked about embracing her sexuality and realizing her desire to have sex with women.

The singer's tour sustainability partner is the non-profit REVERB, an environmental group that will assist the concerts in eliminating more greenhouse gas pollution than it creates. The organization advocates for sustainability efforts in  reducing greenhouse-gas pollution, decreasing single-use plastic waste and promoting plant-based food options.

Eilish returns to New Jersey after performing the "Happier Than Ever" tour back February of 2022.
